He was born July 26, 1957 in Russell, Kansas, the son of Carl and Johnita (Zink) Hays. He manufactured trailers.

He was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Stockton. He enjoyed gardening, farming, and riding his Harley motorcycle.

Survivors include: daughter, Tiffany Albee, Minneapolis; brother, Gerald (Sandy) Hays, Augusta; nephew Devin Hays, Wichita; and grandchildren, Imani Cullum, Preston Cullum, and Ava Curry.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Carl Hays and Johnita Zink Haines; step-father, Cecil Haines; and brother, Mark “Sparky” Hays.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2023 at Pleasant Plain Cemetery, Woodston, Kansas.

LARNED – Donald Kazmaier, 75, passed away December 11, 2023 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born March 2, 1948 in Spearville, Kansas, the son of Cecil W. and Donna L Covert Kazmaier. A lifetime area resident, He was a printer for Office Products Incorporated.

&nbsp;He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Golden Belt Wood Carvers, and Kansas Ornithological Society. He was an Oblate at the Benedictine Monastery in Conception, Missouri and enjoyed woodworking, birdwatching, carving, gardening and hunting.

&nbsp;He married Louise Boyer, they later divorced. On July 2, 1992 he married Kathleen T. Rourke, she survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Cary (Cheri) Kazmaier, California, Jay Kazmaier, California, and John (Noel) Schreiber, Salina; brother, Michael (Judy) Kazmaier, St. Peter’s, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Leigha, Lydia, and Adrianna Kazmaier, Camdyn, Colin and Jaren Schreiber, and Breonah and Kristionah Lippard; two great grandchildren Evelynn and Elias Woodring; and aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Merridy Kazmaier; and brother David Kazmaier.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, Kansas, with Father Anselm Eke presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2023 with a rosary and a vigil at 6:30 p.m. Graveside service will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas with military honors provided by American Legion Post #59 and United States Army.

Kenneth Dean Most Jr., 63, of Ludell, died Friday, December 8, 2023. He was born July 24, 1960, in Atwood, KS to Kenneth Sr. and Maxine (Frick) Most. Kenneth graduated from Atwood High School in 1978 and attended Hutchinson Community College. While in Hutchinson he married Cathy Neil and worked at the paper mill. Kenneth then moved to Denver where he managed 7-Eleven stores for over 20 years and later worked at CoorsTek. On October 10, 1992, Kenneth married Yvonne Killion. In 2020 he moved to Ludell, KS. Kenneth had an honorary Doctorate of Musicology. He enjoyed listening to his rock music loud, talking in riddles, golfing, darts, and playing basketball. He loved to play with his grandchildren and watch them in sports and other activities.

He was preceded in death by his wife Yvonne (Killion) Most.

Kenneth is survived by his mother Maxine Wright; father Kenny Sr.; children, Ian (Daycie) Most, Casey (Jeremy) Keathley and Cayla (Kyle) Youngblood; grandchildren, Madyson, Logan and Morgan Most, Everett and Josie Keathley and Jax and Shannon Youngblood; step-daughter Chanda Killion; step-grandchildren, Sydney, Jake, Carson and Savannah Organ; brother Kermit Most; niece Ailx Saechao; and lifelong friend J.R.

Evelyn D. Armbrister, 91, Hays, died Friday, December 8, 2023 at HaysMed.

She was born November 9, 1932 in Hays, the daughter of Jacob “Jake” and Mae Frances (Smith) Henrickson. On October 28, 1950 she was united in marriage to Raymond F. Armbrister in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they were married 60 years before he preceded her in death on June 30, 2010. Evelyn was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church until 1984 when she and Raymond moved to Hays and they became members of Messiah Lutheran Church. At the age of 15, Evelyn ran her grandfather’s dairy farm and she became a hardworking farmwife, feeding cattle, helping with field work, driving the tractor and wheat truck, and pumping oil wells. She loved Christmas and Christmas music, played the saxophone, was a talented artist and seamstress, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her two sons, Rodney Armbrister and wife Robin of Ellis and Clarence Armbrister and wife Sharon of Bel Aire, two daughters, Gwen Herman and husband Jerry of Hays and Yvonne Koehn and husband Steven of Castle Rock, CO, a sister, Joyce Meseke of Kansas City, nine grandchildren, Jeremy Herman and wife Justine, Travis Herman and wife Erin, Karen Christian, Jennifer Miller and husband Ricky, Tamra Lickteig and husband Brad, Kely Hopkins and husband David, Kyle Armbrister, Randy Armbrister and wife Alana, and Dana Ellis and husband Kody, nine great grandchildren, Quinton, Jaxon, Isla, and Cade Herman, Audrey and Emery Christian, Evelyn Miller, Morgan and Nora Lickteig, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cora A. Dortland, 94, Gorham, died Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Via Christi Village in Hays.

She was born March 21, 1929 in Catharine, the daughter of Adolph and Anna (Staab) Schmidt. She was a graduate of Girls Catholic High School, and on October 26, 1968 she was united in marriage to Everett Dortland at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine. They were married 41 years before he preceded her in death on July 1, 2010. Cora was an X-Ray technician for 11 years at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, and she was a homemaker and farmwife, living on the farm south of Gorham for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Gorham and the Gorham Daughters of Isabella Circle #287.

Survivors include two brothers, Adolph Schmidt and wife DeAnn and Gerald Schmidt and wife Elaine, all of Hays, two sisters-in-law, Rosie Schmidt of Hays and Geraldine Wheeler of Denver, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, infant Elmer, Celestine, Herbert, Alfred, Emery, and Elmer Schmidt, and three sisters, Cyrilla Evans, Fidelia Rome, and Irene Dinkel.

Father Basil Torrez, age 94, died on December 5, 2023, at the Gove County Medical Center, Quinter, Kansas. He was born on June 14, 1929, in Kanopolis, Kansas, the son of Jose and Dionisia (Villalobos) Torrez.

Father Torrez attended Kanopolis Grade School and graduated from Kanopolis High School where he played football. &nbsp;After graduating from Conception Seminary, he was pastor and priest in many different Catholic churches until his retirement on July 1, 1999. &nbsp;He served in Sequin/Hoxie, Kanopolis, Hollyrood, Brookville, Lady of Guadalupe, Salina, Hope, Pfeifer, Sharon Springs/Wallace, Grinnell/Angeles, Washington/Morrowville, and Collyer/St. Peter. &nbsp;Father Torrez spent over 60 years serving his Lord and Savior in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus - 4th Degree and he was active in the communities where he lived. &nbsp;He was an assistant Scoutmaster in Hope, Kansas, he coached girls’ softball, built scale replicas of churches, embroidered quilts, and he was a member of the Grinnell Pride Community and the Collyer Community Alliance.

Father Torrez is survived by his sister, Margaret Cowen of San Francisco, California and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;He is preceded in death by parents; brothers, Bill, Timothy, Joseph, and Benedict Torrez and his sisters, Pauline Gonzales, Toni Waltz, Trini Hunt, Helen Benda, Elodia Camarena, and Diann Torrez.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 pm at St. Michael Church, Collyer on Monday, December 11, 2023, followed by the Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. &nbsp;A Rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus following the vigil.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael Church, Collyer on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in the St. Michael Cemetery.

Marylin Nadine Cheney, age 91, passed away at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas on Thursday, December 7, 2023. She was born in Ness County, Kansas on August 26, 1932, to Hays and Luella Petersilie McDonald. She was a member of the community since the 1940s when her family moved from Ness County, then briefly Wallace County before settling in Greeley County to farm and ranch.&nbsp;

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tribune, a Charter member of the Greeley County Historical Society, and was Greeley County’s Historian. She was also a member of the Kansas State Anthropological Society and held her amateur archeology degree. Nadine also held an AS degree in Criminology.

Nadine was a longtime farmer and rancher alongside her husband, Melvin Cheney, whom she married on March 9, 1952. He passed away in Tribune in 2021.

Nadine is survived by her two children, Marylin &amp; Mark Kleymann of Tribune, Kansas, Tad Cheney of Phoenix, Arizona, her grandchildren Jason &amp; Kellee Kleymann of Tribune, Kansas, Erin Kleymann &amp; Justin Griffin of Albuquerque, New Mexico, her great-grandchildren Cyril &amp; Clark Kleymann of Tribune, Kansas, three sisters Elaine McCaslin of Tribune, Kansas, Theoma Ingram of Tribune, Kansas, Thyra Thompson of Wichita, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nadine is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter Mira Jane Cheney.

&nbsp;Rodney G. Rowland of Smith Center, died on December 8, 2023, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital at the age of 77.

Rodney was born to Henry and Nelda (Malone) Rowland on August 27, 1946, in Falls City, NE.&nbsp; He was one of 11 children.

Rodney retired from Peterson Industries after many years of service.&nbsp; He had a quirky sense of humor.&nbsp; Always ready for a good joke.&nbsp; He took great enjoyment in coming to coffee in the rec hall every morning while living at Western Plains Village.

Survivors include a sister Lois Scott of Arizona, a brother Randy Rowland of Smith Center, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, Shirley, Rosie, Becky, Henry, Rick, Rocky, Ardist, and Rita.

Earleen J. Frauen, 94, passed away December 9, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

She was born August 28, 1929 in Red Willow, Nebraska, the daughter of Warren Kirby and Frieda Amen Mackey.

Moving from Long Pine, Nebraska, she was a longtime Jetmore resident. She was a teacher for many years, a member of First United Methodist Church, Ainsworth, NE, enjoyed playing bridge, doing puzzles and word searches. She kept up with politics and was well informed.

On June 4, 1950 She married James Edward Frauen in Fairbury, NE. He passed away April 1, 2014.

Survivors include: son, John Frauen, Dodge City; a daughter Joy Fuqua, Ellensburg, WA; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, James; daughter, Jan Bradfield; and twin brother, Earl Mackey.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2023 at Beckwith Funeral Home with Harmon Bliss presiding. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Robert A. “Bob” Baker, 90, died Saturday, November 25, 2023 in Fort Collins, CO. He was born December 16, 1932 Edward “Tinkham” and Bertha Baker in Bazaar, Kansas. He was one of four children. He spent his early childhood in Kansas, but later moved with his family to Texas. He remained in Texas to attend college at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas on a rodeo scholarship. Upon graduating, Bob joined the army where he served as a veterinary technician. While stationed in Colorado, he met and married Betty Stallard. They had three children together and were married from 1957 to 1972.

On May 18, 1973, he married LuJuana “Lu” Geist in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Deerfield, Kansas with her four children. In 1980, Bob and Lu moved to Garden City before leaving for El Dorado, Kansas in 1983. After a short stay in El Dorado, they moved back to Garden City where they had lived since. Bob was a man of many talents and an excellent businessman. He and Lu opened B&amp;L rentals which they operated for a number of years and later expanded the business to include B&amp;L storage. Bob also served his community as a Finney County Commissioner.Bob loved to spend time with his family and friends and could often be found down at the Garden City senior center playing cards or snooker. He was also not shy in trying to beat anyone at a game of marbles.Bob was a beloved member of First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City and a strong man of faith. He loved his church family, serving in various capacities including a mission trip to Honduras.

Survivors include four children, Bart Baker (Ellen) of Dodge City, Kansas, Becky Moulden (Brad) of Monument, Colorado, Billie Casillas (John) of Phoenix, Arizona, Cindy Shields of Garden City, Kansas, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob’s sisters, Clara Jo Talkington of Strong City, Kansas and Joy Nelson (Ted) of Cassody, Kansas are also survivors. Bob is preceded in death by his loving wife, Lu; his parents, Tinkham and Bertha; two sons, Jim Shields and Terry Shields; daughter Kathy Prentice; and older brother, Carl Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, with Rev. John Harms presiding. Jeffrey Joe Cox, age 70, of Hugoton, Kansas, died Friday, December 8, 2023, at his home. He was born February 9, 1953, in Hugoton, Kansas, the son of Harold Steven and Margaret Ellinor (Parker) Cox.

Jeff was a lifelong resident of Hugoton, graduating from Hugoton High School in 1971. While in high school he enjoyed playing sports, was very active in FFA and had the opportunity to travel to Europe. He then attended Garden City Community College for two years, before returning home to focus on farming and family. Jeff married Jo Dewell on December 30, 1994, in Fowler, Kansas. Jeff’s kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were his greatest joy in life. He was an avid sports fan and loved high school sports especially when it came to cheering on his grandchildren. Jeff was a supporter and member of the Hugoton Eagles Booster Club. He also enjoyed watching KU basketball, OU football, and Kansas City Chiefs games. When he wasn’t farming, Jeff could be found hunting with his buddies, fishing at the cabin in Cuchara, Colorado, or traveling.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Jo; daughters, Ginny Titus and husband, Wayne, of Hugoton; and Julie Cox Hicks and husband, Kevin, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; son, Weston Cox and wife, Michelle, of New Braunfels, Texas; sister, Judy Hamlin and husband, Rick, of Hugoton; brother, Jerry Cox and wife, Sandy, of Hugoton; sister-in-law, Cheryl Cox of Hugoton; grandchildren, Parker Titus and wife, Christa, Vivian Titus, Hudson Titus, Wyatt Akers, Sydney Nashid and husband, Ilyas, Caleb Hicks, Austin Cox, Victoria Cox, Olivia Cox, Rylee Kanz; and three great-grandchildren, Lillian Ruth Titus, Lawson Jeffrey Titus, and Jedidiah Matthew Mills. Alvin Lee Mapes, 90, of Norton, KS passed away December 8, 2023 at the Norton County Hospital. He was born December 14, 1932 in Norton to Elda Hiram and Edna (Short) Mapes.

Alvin grew up on the family farm and attended Norton Community High School through his Junior year and then received his GED. He began working at the Tuberculosis Hospital in Norton. Alvin married Julia Ann Jimenez on May 31, 1950 in Norton. He worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Shelton Tire &amp; Battery for 26 years and then worked for Ideal Truck Line, retiring as the Shop Foreman on December 31, 1994 after almost 28 years. Alvin was committed to serving his community; he started in 1987 as the Assistant Coordinator for Norton County Emergency Preparedness and then in 1995 became the coordinator and he also worked for the Norton Fire Department for 35 years, the last 8 years of service he was the Chief. Alvin was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing on a traveling bowling league, golf, and playing Bingo, he helped run the local game for 66 years.

Alvin is survived by his daughter, Virginia (Larry) Smith of Phillipsburg, KS; grandchildren: Brian (Amy) Carlton of Spring Hill, TN and Brent Carlton of Norton, KS; great grandchildren: Bradon Carlton of Brighton, CO and McKenna Carlton of Spring Hill, TN and many other family members and friends. Phyllis married Frank Black on December 7, 1963, in Leoti, KS. To this union two kids were born, Pamela and Rick. Phyllis enjoyed being a homemaker and raising the kids. She also worked as an Avon representative. In her free time, she loved to do arts and crafts such as leather work and artex painting. She also enjoyed spending time doing outdoor activities, go-carting and shooting prairie dogs.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dale and sister Gerri.

Phyllis Jean Black

David Earl “Dave” Barber, 59, of Hays, Kansas, passed away in Trego County, Kansas on December 8, 2023.

He was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas to Earl and Charlene “Char” (Dewbre) Barber. He graduated from Trego Community High School in 1983 and continued on at Fort Hays State University graduating in 1987 with a degree in agribusiness/economics. There, he met his wife, Annette G. Jarnagin and they were wed on November 23, 1988 at the First Baptist Church in Protection, Kansas. They have been married a beautiful 35 years and were blessed with the arrival of their son Brooks David Barber in 1997.

For much of his life, Dave worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in Rural Development. Throughout his career, he had a profound impact on numerous communities and was instrumental in countless projects following the Greensburg tornado, as well as various hospital and water projects. David was passionate about supporting others and spent many years announcing sports for TMP as well as high schools across Northwest Kansas. Dave enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching football - especially the Kansas City Chiefs - writing poems about family, and spending time with his family. He had a strong faith and was a worship leader at North Oak Community Church and a member of the 4Given Quartet.

He is survived by his wife: Annette of Hays; son Brooks Barber of Denver, CO; father Earl Barber of Hays; mother-in-law Karen Jarnagin of Protection; his brothers’ families: Mark Barber (Bernice) of Lawrence, KS and nephew Ryan; and James Barber of Springfield, MO and nephews Blake and Brady; his wife’s siblings’ families: Tina Brawner of Garden City, KS and niece Candace; Kris and Trish Jarnagin of Lincoln, NE and nephews Cameron and Jameson and nieces Shelby, Maggie, and Olivia; Gwen and Robert Beeley of Lawrence, KS and nieces Sydni and Madison.

He was preceded in death by his mother Char Barber, sister-in-law Trudy Barber, and father-in-law Gary Jarnagin.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at North Oak Community Church in Hays, with Pastor Josh Gelatt officiating, followed by a lunch for the family. Burial will be at 2:30 pm in Protection Cemetery in Protection. In Loving Memory of Mary Ann Legleiter, age 91, of Liebenthal, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas. She was born on June 27, 1932, in her family home in Ellis, Kansas, to Nicholas and Leoba (Geist) Dinkel. Mary Ann was a dedicated and loving wife to Francis C. Legleiter, whom she married on October 9, 1950. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2006.

Mary Ann was a remarkable mother of nine children, nineteen grandchildren, twenty five great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren, all of whom meant the world to her. As a farmwife, she worked alongside her husband, Francis, tending to the land and raising their large family. She also worked outside the home as a cook at various locations, including St. Anthony Hospital, Rush County Memorial Hospital, and the LaCrosse Sale Barn.

In her spare time, Mary Ann found joy in crocheting, sewing, making noodles, and raising chickens. She was a proud member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Liebenthal and the St. Ann’s Altar Society, where she actively participated in various activities, including the creation of rosaries.

Mary Ann Legleiter

On December 9, 2023 our beloved father, Gerald L. “Jerry” Winters of Hays, Kansas, returned home to his Heavenly Father at the age of 92. He was born on January 3, 1931 in Gasport, New York to LeRoy and Dorothy (Moorehouse) Winters. Gerald graduated from Lockport High School and attended Fredonia State College and the University of Buffalo where he received his elementary education degree. Gerald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and he later married Dorothy Long on August 28, 1957. They were married 35 years before she preceded him in death on February 18, 1992.

He taught school for 32 years in Niagara Falls, New York and never stopped teaching the things he loved be it dancing or gardening. He was also a jack of many trades, selling insurance for 25 years, owning and renting apartments for 20 years, and selling vitamins right up until the end of his life. He loved to interact with people about health and fitness and loved to exercise. He was a member of the Western New York Racquetball League, and he enjoyed swimming and especially loved dancing of all kinds. Though, perhaps ballroom dancing was his favorite. He was a faithful churchgoer, first at the Niagara United Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and served as an elder. Later he moved to Hays, Kansas and became a member of Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church. He loved to make the people around him laugh and always desired to see those he loved doing well in life.

He is survived by his two children, Patricia Cooley and husband Dale of Syracuse, UT and Jane Rorstrom and husband Jim of Hays, a brother-in-law, Peter Welge of Jamesville, NY, six grandchildren, Nickolaus Oettinger and wife Chelsey, Heidi Oettinger and fiancé Justin Davidson, Katarina Clinton and husband Mark, Hans Rorstrom and wife Hannah, Eric Rorstrom, and Carl Rorstrom, and two great grandchildren, Svea Rorstrom and Hope Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister; Janet Welge.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church, with Pastor Jason Murray and Pastor Gary Simon officiating. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sharon Harlow Welch; his two children, Sandra K Welch Donnelly (Dennis) Leawood, KS and Phillip W Welch of Kansas City, Mo; four grandchildren, Allyssa Grizzle, Kearney, Mo, Kevin Grizzle, Waverly, Mo, Alex Grizzle, Kearney, Mo and Dalton Welch, Kansas City, Mo. ; three step grandchildren, Erin Donnelly Suleiman (Samir), Belmont, NC, Sean Donnelly (Kelly), Overland Park, KS and Cara Donnelly, Leawood, KS; three great grandchildren, Nora Shanks, Jonathan Massey and Laevin Grizzle; one step great granddaughter, Isla Donnelly.

Kyra Jean Bauer, 22, of Topeka, passed away Friday, December 1, 2023.

She was born the daughter of Mark and Veronica Bauer on November 1, 2001, in Lynchburg, Virginia. &nbsp;

Kyra graduated from Hayden High School in 2020 and was a Junior at Washburn University.

Kyra was a bright light in everyone's world. Her positive energy, loving heart and shining personality brought happiness to anyone that Kyra was around.&nbsp;

She loved most spending time with her family, you could always count on her to be at any family event big or small. She loved spending time with all of her friends. She was one of the best dancers and always bringing a smile and laughter to everyone! &nbsp;Kyra was a fashion icon to her family and friends. She was a talented athlete and loved participating in many different sports whether it was track, volleyball, pickle ball or cheering on her favorite teams. &nbsp;Kyra was a loving and dependable daughter, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend. If you knew Kyra, then you knew happiness and love.

Survivors include her parents, Mark and Veronica Bauer of Topeka; sister, Alyssa Clancy and husband Chase of Topeka; brothers, Camron Bauer of Merriam and Samuel Bauer of Topeka; grandparents, George and Nancy Unrein of Topeka; niece and Goddaughter, Chloe Clancy of Topeka; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins; and her dog, Gus.

Garden City- Laynie Schiffelbein, 64, died on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on August 22, 1959 at Garden City the daughter of Charles Bertraum &amp; Billie Mae (Jacks) Sinclair. She married Tim Schiffelbein on October 15, 1982 in Garden City.

Laynie graduated from Garden City High School in 1977 and Kansas State University in 1981 with her Bachelor Of Arts in Education. She later earned her Masters from Emporia State University. She started her high school English teaching career in Spring Hill before moving to Perryton, Texas where she taught for 18 years. In 2003 she and her husband moved back to Garden City where she taught English and later became the Technology Coordinator for USD # 457. She was part of Community Congregational Church in Garden City and also belonged to the KNEA and NEA teaching associations. She enjoyed her horses, crafts, interior home projects, especially assigning her kids duties, family photos and especially family holiday celebrations.

She is survived by her Husband- Tim Schiffelbein, 3 Sons- Geoff Schiffelbein of Raytown, Missouri, Tyler Schiffelbein of Great Bend and Tucker Schiffelbein of Garden City, Daughter- Emma Jackson of Overland Park, 2 Brothers- C. She was part of Community Congregational Church in Garden City and also belonged to the KNEA and NEA teaching associations. She enjoyed her horses, crafts, interior home projects, especially assigning her kids duties, family photos and especially family holiday celebrations.She is survived by her Husband- Tim Schiffelbein, 3 Sons- Geoff Schiffelbein of Raytown, Missouri, Tyler Schiffelbein of Great Bend and Tucker Schiffelbein of Garden City, Daughter- Emma Jackson of Overland Park, 2 Brothers- C. Mary Gaye Knowles, 69, died peacefully at her home in Kansas City on December 2, 2023.

She was the daughter of Rupert and Marillyn (Crane) Knowles.

Mary grew up in Hays and attended Hays High until her family moved to Wichita before her senior year. 

She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in biology and went on to earn a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas. 

She worked as a grant writer for HydroGeoLogic (HGL), a national environmental remediation company.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents. 

She is survived by her siblings: Larry Knowles(Michelle) of Hays, Ron Knowles (Michelle) of Missoula, MT and Patricia Chase (Clint) of International Falls, MN. 

She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.

Christine Lorraine Hockman, 66, of Hays, passed away on Dec. 3, 2023, in Hays. She was born to Carl and Sharon (Wilson) Alvis and was preceded in death by her husband, Kevin Hockman, in 1989. Christine was a devoted long-time day care provider.

Christine had a kind heart and a big love for life that was evident in her passions and pursuits. She adored children and had an obscene obsession for the color pink.

She also loved coffee, unicorns and popcorn in movies. Christine was especially proud of her ability to successfully quit drinking and smoking.

In addition to her role as a daycare provider, Christine was known for her involvement in the community. She served as the trailer park neighborhood watch person, keeping an eye on the safety of her neighbors. Furthermore, she dedicated herself to helping the Hispanic community by distributing donated food from the church as the local food bank.

She is survived by her son, Jason Johnson of Hays; her daughter, Kendra Trebilcock of Garden City, Mo.; her brother, Bucky Alvis of Cawker City,; two sisters, Beth Thompson of Shawnee, Okla., and Angela Alvis of Victoria; three grandchildren, Talon and Gage Trebilcock, and Jacob Johnson, as well as the father of her children, Jay Johnson, and a multitude of nieces and nephews by birth and by choice.

Christine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kevin, and two brothers, Ben and Kenny Alvis, along with numerous extended family members.

A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A memorial visitation will precede the service, starting at 1 p.m.

The family requests that donations be made to The ARC or animal rescue of choice in Christine's honor.

&nbsp;William (Bill) Henry Bixenman, 92, of Grinnell, passed away peacefully at his home in Grinnell on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023.

He was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Hays, to John and Mary (Ostmeyer) Bixenman. Bill attended Pleasant Ridge Country School north of Grinnell. On Aug. 18, 1956, he married Harriett Beedy. Bill was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grinnell, KS. He was a member of the Angelus 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council #2773.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Harriett; two daughters, Denise and Gerri; sisters, Doris Manhart and Stella Krannawitter; and brothers, Fred and Joe Bixenman.Survivors include his children, Pam Bechard (Richard), Shawnee,; Doug Bixenman (Lisa), Grinnell; Stephanie Ostmeyer (Terry), Grinnell; Roger Bixenman (Karla), Hays; and 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and was stationed in Japan. He was a lifelong farmer/rancher. They lived on the family farm until 1986 when they moved to Grinnell.

He had so much love for his family and relished every opportunity to attend his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. He also loved to watch the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs.

His most enjoyable hobby was playing cards with family and friends.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Parish Center in Grinnell with a Vigil at 6:30 p.m. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grinnell.

Burial with military honors by Grinnell VFW Post 2864 will take place in the church cemetery.

Garden City- Brooke Anne Hamlin-Lopez, 45, died on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 surrounded by her loving family at her home in Garden City after a two year battle with Uveal Melanoma. She was born on December 2, 1978 at Garden City the daughter of Kent &amp; Mary (Walls) Hamlin and was a lifetime resident of Garden City.

Brooke graduated from Garden City High School in 1997 and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Fort Hays State University. She worked for a time at the Finney County Appraisal office and with Finney County Path before becoming a Family Support Specialist for Catholic Charities. She loved her job helping refugees find housing and life necessities. She has been with the housing program at Catholic Charities since it started and she is a big part of where it’s at today. She also facilitated MRT for Seeds Of Hope where she was a board member. 

With her job she was active with the Homeless Coalition and the Disaster Response and Emergency Assistance Charities. Brooke was a board member for Santa Fe Trail Boy Scouts. She was a loving and devoted Mother who loved to travel and enjoy new experiences, especially with her son. Her last act of kindness was being involved in 3 trials for the Uveal Melanoma research which involved numerous trips to Philadelphia with the hope this would help other cancer patients.
