Hattie Ann Clifford, 68, passed away on Feb. 29, 2024, at her home in Russell, surrounded by her loving DSNWK staff. She was born on Feb. 4, 1956, in Kyle, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to Floyd Clifford and Lulu Twiss.

After Hattie’s birth, she and her family moved to Henderson, Nev., in June 1956. Hattie lived with her parents until 1973 when her parents divorced, at which time she moved to Martin, S.D., to live with her grandparents.

Hattie learned many independent living skills from her grandmother: washing dishes, folding laundry, making beds and assisting with some cooking. Hattie then moved back to Henderson, Nev., in 1974 to live with her dad and attended the Helen J Stewart School, graduating in 1975. 

Hattie lived with her dad until 1985 when she went to live with her sister Beverly and family. She lived there until Beverly passed away in 1998. Hattie’s brother Don, and her sister-in-law, Robyn assisted in caring for Hattie, and arranged for Hattie to enter into DSNWK services in Hill City in 1998. Hattie was very close to Robyn and enjoyed spending time with her. She made many friends while in Hill City and enjoyed arts and crafts classes. Hattie lived in Hill City until 2015 when she moved to a DSNWK group home in Russell, and Connie Schinkus became her court-appointed guardian.

Hattie enjoyed when Connie came to visit: enjoying all the goodies and coloring books she provided. She loved the therapy dog Lucy and would always give her hugs, kisses, and had a great big grin while doing it. Hattie enjoyed shuffling her playing cards, coloring books, teapa (coffee), pickles, and cottage cheese. Hattie will be greatly missed by her DSNWK friends and family.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. March 5 at the Pioneer Developmental Center of Russell. Burial will be at Stockton City Cemetery at a later date.

James M Helus

LeRoy Dinkel, 86, of Grainfield, Kansas, died February 27th, 2024, at Wheatlands Healthcare Center in Kingman, Kansas with family at his side. He was born in Grainfield to John and Christina (Kaiser) Dinkel on September 23, 1937.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Christina; siblings, Mary, Francis, Richard, Darlene, and Loretta; his wife of 29 years Inez (Kraft) Dinkel, and second wife Joan (Yoakum) Dinkel of 22 years.LeRoy is survived by his sister Louella (Willie) Zerr of Oakley, Kansas; children; John (Laura) Dinkel of Leander, Texas; Vicki (Joel) Jarnagin of Goddard, Kansas; Jim (Cindy) Dinkel of Las Vegas, Nevada; Brad Dinkel of Round Rock, Texas; and Scott (April) Dinkel of Lincoln, Nebraska.LeRoy enjoyed seven grandchildren; Matthew, Jessica, Jayde, Joshua, Trevin, Trajan, Tatiana; and eight great grandchildren; Jackson, Jase, Cooper, Reagan, Aleyna, Aston, Evelyn, Iylah.

LeRoy was a lifelong resident of Grainfield where he raised his family and worked in the northwest Kansas area until his retirement.

After graduating from Grainfield High School in 1955, he enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged after three years of service.

On December 27, 1961, he married the mother of his five children, Inez Kraft in Park, Kansas. After Inez passed away in 1990, he remarried to Joan Yoakum in Grainfield on October 24, 1992.LeRoy worked at the family service station with his dad after his time in the Navy. He was also employed by Shaw Motors, and Mead Construction before starting his own contracting business in association with Southard Home Improvement. After selling the business, he became the Grainfield city services manager until his retirement. Even after retirement he helped out with projects around the community and anyone who required his many areas of expertise. He was a volunteer fireman, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.

There will be a visitation and viewing from 3:00- 5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. A rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2024, at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. Graveside service will follow at the Grainfield Cemetery. Honorary bearers for the service are Mathew Dinkel, Joshua Jarnagin, Trevin Dinkel, Trajan Dinkel, and Chandler Ray.

Elfriede U. Cooper died February 27, 2024, in Longmont, CO at the age of 84.

On June 18, 1939, Edwin and Magda Genswein welcomed their new daughter into their home in Konstanz, Germany. As a result of her parents’ support, Elfriede developed a quality work ethic and sound education.

At age 21, Elfriede set out to see the world with some savings and good language skills. She spent several years in the San Francisco area working to pay her way and also to change her status from immigrant to U.S. citizen. Later she moved to Denver and continued working and enjoying big city living.

Elfriede met and married Gary E. Cooper, moving to the small Northwest Kansas city of Colby. After several years the couple moved to the country, and it was there that Elfriede described as the best twenty years of her life. Being in the country allowed her to fully explore her respect for all things living: children, family, neighbors, and friends as well as the animal and plant worlds of the area. She had endless knowledge of and admiration for the animals she raised as well as the wild birds, and she cultivated beautiful gardens year after year. Her fantastic cooking and hospitality made her home a welcoming place for guests from around the area and the world.

The small city also gave Elfriede the opportunity to visibly support her church, schools, city projects, political candidates, and most of all her children, their wants and needs.

At an age-appropriate time, Elfriede and Gary began living in Green Valley, Arizona, establishing a second home there along with continued love of new neighbors, friends, and a new exploration of southwest living and growing things. Her love of birds and flowers expanded in the years spent in a warmer climate, and her Arizona home was a burst of color and hospitality.

Elfriede is survived by her husband Gary; son James of Hays, KS; her daughter Anna Lull, son-in-law Andrew, and grandchildren Cooper, Sophia and Lucy, all of Boulder, CO; and son David of Hays, KS.Funeral services will be held from Sacred Heart Church with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Colby, KS at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 2 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ross Herman Rodenbeck

Wayne Otto Meyer was born on Feb. 3, 1935, in Smith County, Kansas, to Otto Meyer and Ida Zabel Meyer. He passed away on Feb. 26, 2024, in the loving presence of family members. He was 89.

He grew up on a farm southeast of Gaylord with his brothers: Irvin, Waldean, Delmer, and Richard, and one sister, Berniel. For the past few years, he has been the last surviving Meyer sibling of his generation.

He graduated from Gaylord High School in 1952, attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and served in the Kansas Army National Guard.

On Feb. 2, 1959, he married Loretta Wilson. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago with all of their descendants present.

Wayne and Loretta’s two sons, Marc and Darren, attended school in Gaylord and Smith Center. Their parents taught them to value faith, family, and hard work.

Wayne’s life’s work was farming and raising cattle. He frequently told stories of driving a tractor in the hayfield at the age of 6. He hauled cattle and leveled ground for irrigation for Harry Dannenberg, and eventually he and Loretta settled on the Wilson family land southwest of Gaylord, where he spent most of his farming years. He always fixed his and repaired his own equipment. He also drove a school bus. All the grandchildren cherish memories of spending time with Grandpa and Grandma on the farm and traveling with them on vacation, and they will never forget his jokes.

Wayne enjoyed attending livestock sales and state fairs in Kansas and Nebraska and vacationing in Estes Park, Colo. He loved to read, and he especially loved talking with everyone he met.

In 2006, Wayne and Loretta retired to Smith Center. The Meyers had been long-time members of the Gaylord Community Church and had more recently attended worship at the Church of the Nazarene and at Sun Porch, both in Smith Center.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Loretta, of Smith Center; sons Marc Meyer (Suzy) of Cortez, Colo., and Darren Meyer (Patricia) of Smith Center; grandchildren Jacob Meyer (Stephanie Campbell) of Fort Collins, Colo., Katie Meyer-Jensen (Tyler) of Denver, Colo., Blake Meyer (Samantha) of Smith Center, Cara Kingsbury (Ross) of Smith Center, and Alese Meyer, currently attending Fort Hays State University; and great-grandchildren Elliot Meyer, Wesley Meyer-Jensen, Karsyn Meyer, and Beckham Meyer.

Travis Glenn Gillihan, age 46, of Goodland, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at his home. &nbsp;He was born on March 22, 1977 to Harold and Karen Gillihan in Cheyenne Wells, CO. After he graduated from Goodland High School in 1996, he went on to receive his Associate’s degree from Colby Community College in 1998.

For many years, Travis worked for the City of Goodland and then Helena Chemical. &nbsp;In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, participating in NAGDA dog trial competitions with his beloved dog, Trigger and serving as a board member of the High Plains Roosters chapter of Pheasants Forever. Travis also dedicated many hours to coaching trap and skeet for both 4-H and the GHS Shooting Sports Teams and he enjoyed watching the athletes grow in the sport and become more confident in themselves.&nbsp;

Travis is survived by his parents, Harold and Karen Gillihan; sister, Amity (Justin) Ihrig; niece, Ella Ihrig; nephew, Rhett Ihrig all of Goodland; Paternal Grandmother, Gladys Gillihan of Springfield, MO; Aunts and Uncles, Mary &amp; Carlyle Kammerer of Parker, CO, Perry &amp; Susan Will of New Castle, CO, and Glenn T. Travis Glenn Gillihan

Dannie Dwight Gordon, Jr., 54, died Monday, February 26, 2024, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born August 2, 1969, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Dannie Dwight &amp; Gloria (Allen) Gordon, Sr.Dannie grew up in Garden City where he attended Garden City schools. He later moved to Wichita Fall, Texas before moving back to Garden City. He then moved to Lakin in 2014 where he has lived since. Dannie enjoyed spending his time fishing and listening to music. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and loved to spend time with his family.

Survivors include his mother Gloria Rhodig of Garden City; a nephew Javier Gordon of Garden City; a niece Victoria &amp; wife Stephani Ortiz-Pelkey of Hutchinson, Kansas; and his great nieces and nephews Xzyrain Ortiz-Pelkey, Javier Gordon, Jr., Jadalynn Gordon, &amp; Jaxtyn Gordon. Lawrence Joseph “Larry” Pander, Jr., 68, died Monday February 26, 2024 at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on March 19, 1955 in San Francisco, California; the son of Lawrence Joseph Pander, Sr. and Clowon Levine (Miller) Pander.

Larry was born and raised in California, he attended and graduated from the schools of Half Moon Bay. Upon his graduation Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force where he began his education in fire science and was honorably discharged in 1975. After his time in the service Larry continued his college education at Skyline College in San Bruno, California; and then San Mateo, California. In 1980 he relocated to the Houston, Texas area where he began his career as a Firefighter; he was a part of the Houston Fire Department for almost 30 years until he relocated to Garden City. Throughout his life he continued to receive education and training to hone his skills and gain knowledge related to fire rescue and various life saving techniques. He taught fire science at Garden City Community College up until his retirement in 2021.

Larry was talented in many areas and enjoyed welding and carpentry projects as well as raising race horses. In addition to being The Fire Science Instructor at GCCC he continued to be an active member of the Volunteer Fire Department throughout his lifetime. He received many awards including Firefighter of the Year in 2001 and the Unsung Hero Award in 2003. He served on many boards, and was an integral part in many advancements for the Fire Science Community.

Survivors include his children- Shane Monroe Pander of West Salem, Oregon and Neisha Marie Pander of Houston, Texas; Grandchildren- Daimon, Kirra, Dakota, Tristan, Trevor, Tayden, and McKenna; Brothers- Mike (Brittney) Pander, and Athen (Ashley) Pander as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his oldest brother- Quin Pander, and one sister- Kim Pander Doukas.

Visitation will take place at Garnand Funeral Home Thursday February 29, 2024 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Friday March 1, 2024 from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm. Richard received his degree from Whittier College, majoring in history with a minor in philosophy. He received his MBA in Ancient Middle Eastern History from California State University Fullerton. Starting law school as a non-traditional student at age 34, he earned his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Kansas in May 1982.

Richard and his wife served as dorm parents and teachers in a private academy in Friendsville, Tennessee for a year before moving to Kansas. He was a professor at Barclay College, Haviland, Kansas for 5 years before going to law school. While in law school he was part of the DefenderProject and served as an intern with a member of the Kansas Judicial Council. He began his law career as the Assistant County Attorney for Pawnee County. He served as an Assistant Attorney General under Robert Stephen for 5 years before coming to Finney County as an Assistant County Attorney. He was then in private practice in Garden City until appointed DistrictMagistrate Judge for Kearny County in 2005. He retired in December of 2022.

Richard enjoyed watching KU Basketball, classic cars and listening to “The Oldies” and folk music. He was funny, kind, and extremely knowledgeable in many areas. He often inflicted his love of music and his deep well of information on his family and close friends. Richard was also an integral part of both the Emmaus House and ABC Pregnancy Center serving on their Board of Directors for decades. His love of laughter and good sense of humor lives on.

Richard is survived by his wife of more than 50 years- Nancy Hodson, children- Rachel Hodson, Jon Hodson, and Martha Hodson, grandchildren- Ethan Hodson and Ember Hodson, sister-Sarah S. Fred Gerald Kirby, age 82, lifelong resident of Goodland passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024 at his home. Fred was born March 24, 1941 to Leonard Ray and Mattie B. (Tatham) Kirby in Goodland.

Fred grew up and went to school in Goodland, graduating from Goodland High School with the class of 1960. On April 29, 1961 he married Patty Colby, to this union Pam was born.&nbsp;In 1968 Fred enlisted in the United States Army and served until 1971. He returned to Goodland attended and graduated from the Northwest Kansas Technical College Carpentry Program. Fred worked many jobs over the years, Harvey Larm Trash Service, Hardman Lumber, drove a dump truck for Dick Stegman and Jack Armstrong, delivered the Rocky Mountain News, jailer for the Sherman County Sheriff Department, maintenance man for Golden West Skills Center and Goodland Regional Medical Center, small engine repair at Alex’s Radiator &amp; Repair, and always helping out anyone that needed it. Fred was a lifetime member of Goodland VFW Post 1133. Fred served as a VFW Color Guard member and Commander. Fred also served as a board member for the Sherman County Speedway in previous years. He enjoyed leather work, playing cards, hanging out at Alex’s shop, going on road trips (adventures) with family, supporting, and cheering on his grandchildren, watching races and demolition derbys, spending time at the VFW, drinking coffee, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, grandparents, wife Patty and brother Leonard Kirby. Jeffrey Lynn Williamson, 66, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 27, 2024 at Stafford County Hospital.

He was born December 4, 1957 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Jerry and Janice Williamson.

In 1975 Jeff graduated from Macksville High School. He furthered his education at Goodland Vo-Tech and graduated with a degree in plumbing. On September 15, 1978 he married Shari Lynn Coen. He then returned to St. John and later began working for the City of St. John in 1980. He worked in various positions for the city and was currently employed as the Supervisor over the electrical department.

Jeff loved doing electrical and plumbing work, tinkering in his shop, and playing golf. He enjoyed spending time with his Belgian horses, pulling various types of wagons and trolleys, watching baseball, attending classic rock concerts, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. In 2013 Jeff received the gift of life and was a liver transplant recipient which allowed him 11 more years with his family and friends. After his transplant he enjoyed planning his doctor appointments around the Kansas City Royals home games that he would attend with his daughter, Betsy. &nbsp;

Jeff is survived by his wife: Shari, daughters: Gabrielle Roach (Aaron) and Betsy Williamson, grandchildren: Paityn, Carter, Cayson Roach, brothers: Bill (Cathy), Brian (Susy), sister; Lori Martin (Marty), several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog: Roxy. Jeff’s grandkids were his pride and joy. He enjoyed taking them to baseball and hockey games as well as watching them participate in wrestling, volleyball, baseball, and various other school activities. &nbsp;

Celebration of Life service will be at 11:00am, Saturday, March 2, 2024 at IOOF Lodge, St. John, with Pastor Tom Harrison and Pastor Wade Russell presiding. Jetmore &nbsp;- Donald E. Rhoades, 92, passed away February 28, 2024 at Fort Dodge.

He was born May 20, 1931 in Macon, Missouri, the son of Harold Wayne and Dora Keister Rhoades. &nbsp;A longtime area resident, he was a Postal Carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 26 years.

Donald was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City. &nbsp;He served in the United States Navy from 1951 - 1956, during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

On March 15, 1957 he married Clema Rabe in Jetmore, Kansas. &nbsp;She survives.

Other survivors include; three children, Vindy L (Bob) Couchman, Livonia, MO, Damon L. (Phyllis) Rhoades, Loveland, CO and Adena L. (Jeff) Jones, Jetmore; three sisters, Deanna Fagen, Spearville, Darla Meuting, Dodge City and Dixie Stengle Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by; his parents and a sister Donna Spreier.

Lila J. Carson, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born on June 29, 1934, in Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of William Joseph and Edna Zella Davison Weiser.&nbsp;&nbsp;A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1951 moving from Garden City, Kansas, she was a farmer’s wife and school bus driver.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On April 30, 1951, she married Billie D. Carson in Raton, New Mexico.&nbsp;&nbsp;He passed away on August 10, 2004, in Scott City, Kansas.

Rulene Marie (Balluch) Rosproy, age 71, of Hays, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society in Ellis, KS. She was born on December 13, 1952, in Quinter, KS to Rudolph Albert and Helen Marie (Stithem) Balluch.

Rulene's formative years were spent in WaKeeney, KS, where she graduated from Trego Community High School and later pursued her passion for cosmetology at Northwest Kansas Technical College. Rulene was twice married: to Richard Brown in 1985 and later to Louis A. Rosproy on December 28, 2007, in Hays, KS.

Having divided her time between WaKeeney and Hays, KS, Rulene was known for her expertise in hair styling, owning several successful salons, including the Mane Attractions in Hays, KS. Her artistic talents extended beyond hairdressing; she enjoyed collecting figurines, knitting, crocheting, and creating beautiful works of art. Rulene had a special affinity for cows and cherished the moments she spent traveling with her beloved sister.

Rulene is survived by her sister, Pamela (Joseph) McNaught of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, Randall (Deb) Balluch and Patrick Balluch of WaKeeney, KS; sister-in-law, Karla Balluch of Wills Point, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis Rosproy, son Clayton Brown, and brother Richard Balluch.

Peggy Jean (Presley) Lee, 95, Hays, died Thursday, February 29, 2024, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born April 23, 1928, in Cox City, Oklahoma, to John and Alma (Swift) Presley. On July 7, 1951, she married Kid Sherwood (K.S. “Tommy”) Lee in Marlow, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on October 3, 1999. Peggy was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell until transitioning to the role of full-time homemaker in 1958. She made homes in Sweetwater, TX, Sterling, CO, Pampa, TX, Oklahoma City, OK, Duncan, OK, and Arvada, CO before settling in Hays in 1977. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sisters of St. Agnes Associates, St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary “Noodle O’s”, and a Thursday swimmer at The HaysMed Center for Health Improvement. Peggy loved working in the yard, reading, her dogs, and her nightly wine.

She is survived by her son Dane Lee, his wife Elizabeth Olmo-Lee, and their children Alexandra and Ian of Fairway, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy, son, Donald Shane Lee, infant son, Mark Lee, two brothers, Johnny and Donald Presley, and her sister, Katherine Busterna.

Upon moving to St. Francis, Kansas she married Walter J. Manteuffel. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her sons, Robert “Bob” and wife Martha of Royse City TX, Craig and wife Paula of Topeka; daughter, Pam Deghand of Prairie Village KS; grandchildren, Jessica Quinlan (Chad), Laura Johnson (Brandon), Michael Manteuffel (Kayla), Matt Manteuffel,&nbsp;Alexa Sanders (Chuck), Bradley Deghand (Kara); seven great-grandchildren; brother, Landon Daniel of Keizer OR; and sister, Dora Daniel of Manhattan KS. &nbsp; Norma Wolf, age 40, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born July 20, 1983, in Ulysses, Kansas, the daughter of John and Helen (Peters) Wolf.

Norma grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School. She earned an Associate Degree in accounting from Seward County Community College and was a semester away from earning a Bachelor’s Degree. She had been an accountant for L&amp;L Floor Covering and for private individuals. As a young girl, Norma enjoyed going to theme and water parks, running, and golfing. She was baptized at the Mennonite Brethren Church. Norma loved spending time with her nieces and nephews, cooking, traveling, trying new foods, and riding her motorcycle. She also had an extensive stuffed monkey collection.

Norma is survived by her mother, Helen of Ulysses; brothers, Frank Wolf and wife, Erin, of Divide, Colorado, and Richard Wolf of Ulysses; nieces and nephews, Carlos, Ryder, Christan, Noah, Emily, and Sarah.

Norma is preceded in death by her father, John; sister, Anna Velasquez; and niece, Alicia Velasquez.

Joan Grace (Dorman) Hull, 87, Hill City, passed away Feb. 27, 2024, at Hays Medical Center. She was born July 28, 1936, to Orval and Grace (Paintin) Dorman in WaKeeney. When Joan was born, her parents were told that she would never be able to walk. Her mother rubbed her legs diligently every day. When the Kansas Crippled Children came to visit the little Dorman girl who couldn’t walk, Joan’s mother proudly stated, “You can find her outside playing!”

Music was always an important part of Joan’s life. She played the trumpet and was in the Trego County High School marching band. In 1950, while attending high school, Joan met her best friend Carolyn Flagler (Riggs). Carolyn and Joan played duets on their accordions at local talent shows. In July 1954, Joan was playing her accordion in Penokee where she met another talent show contestant, Russell Hull from Hill City. A week or two later they began dating. That fall they attended one semester together at Fort Hays State College. Joan and Russell were married on Dec. 18, 1955, at the WaKeeney Presbyterian Church. They had just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Faith in God was very important to her. She was a lifelong member of the Hill City Presbyterian Church. She played the organ every Sunday and served as a member of the Session. She worked at the Farmers and Merchants Bank for over 20 years, also working for Cover Up Products, a family-owned business for 21 years.

Joan was an excellent cook! Her family always requested her fabulous fried chicken, and she was also known for her homemade cinnamon rolls. Every morning, Joan would work on a jigsaw puzzle and play solitaire on the computer. She loved spending quality time with her family and friends. Cross stitching, playing bingo, cards, board games and Pictionary were favorite pastimes. She enjoyed the Game Show Network. Books were never far away; her favorites were Harlequin romance novels, Laura Wilder and Louis L’Amour. Joan loved her flowers, especially the peonies. She was always happy to share roots with others so they, too, could enjoy the beautiful colors.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents: Orval and Grace Dorman; grandparents Guy and Lucy Dorman and James and Rosa Bella Paintin; and first-born daughter Bonnie Jo Hull. Survivors left to cherish her memory are her husband, Russell, Hill City; her children: Natalie Reynolds (husband Mike), Wichita and Linda Hull-Viera (husband Jerry), Topeka; and her grandchildren Samantha and Kathryn Viera, Topeka.

Joan Grace Hull

Ilene Norton, age 93, died at Brookdale Senior Living, Hays, Kansas on February 27, 2024. She was born on May 6, 1930, in rural Beeler, Kansas, to Jacob and Myrtle (Schamaun) Merryfield and was the fourth of five children. Ilene and her family resided 8 miles south of Beeler, KS from birth to young adulthood.&nbsp;

Ilene attended Plum Creek School at Buda, KS for 8 years where she was the only student in her grade for all 8 years. Ilene attended Beeler High School and graduated in 1948. Ilene worked in the café in Dighton, KS before getting married.

On November 21, 1951, she married Leonard Norton in Dighton, KS. Two children were born to this union Vicky and Marlin. Leonard and Ilene built a farm and ranching legacy together for 50 years. Every farming and family decision was made together. &nbsp;Ilene helped with summer and fall harvest, harvest meals, checking cows, riding horses and motorcycles/4-wheelers. &nbsp;Ilene was an integral part of the farm operation and managing the farm finances. Ilene also cared for her mother, Myrtle, for many years at the farm. &nbsp;Leonard and Ilene had 50 years together before his death in 12-28-2001 on Marlin’s 34th birthday. Sadly, Marlin died 7 years after Leonard and both losses were Ilene’s greatest heartache.&nbsp;

&nbsp;After Leonard’s death Ilene moved from the farm to Ness City. She enjoyed spending time and playing cards with friends and family. Ilene attended numerous ball games, concerts and graduations watching her three grandchildren. Ilene loved her three grandchildren: Caleb, Colin and Cailin and enjoyed her six great-grandchildren: Canyon, Craylee, Caydex, Creek, Cru and Dirks. They brought her great joy in being with them. She attended the Utica and Ness City Methodist Churches. Ilene’s extended family of nieces and nephews were like her children as well and they affectionately called her “Auntie”.&nbsp;

Ilene is survived by her daughter, Vicky Francisco and her husband, Andy, of Beeler, Kansas; three grandchildren, Caleb and Jade Foos, Ness City, Colin and Katren Foos, Ness City, Cailin and Dylan Hamilton, Sublette; six great grandchildren, Canyon, Craylee and Creek Foos, Caydex and Cru Foos, and Dirks Hamilton; and her brother, Dean Merryfield, Ness City. Along with numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son; brothers, Delbert and Duane Merryfield; and her sister, Arlene Pearce. &nbsp;

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ness City Methodist Church followed by burial in the Utica Cemetery. Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Memorial Contributions may be given to the Ness County Fair Association, Brookdale Senior Living, or the Utica American Legion.

She was born on May 6, 1930, in rural Beeler, Kansas, to Jacob and Myrtle (Schamaun) Merryfield and was the fourth of five children. Ilene and her family resided 8 miles south of Beeler, KS from birth to young adulthood.&nbsp;Ilene attended Plum Creek School at Buda, KS for 8 years where she was the only student in her grade for all 8 years. Ilene attended Beeler High School and graduated in 1948. Ilene worked in the café in Dighton, KS before getting married.On November 21, 1951, she married Leonard Norton in Dighton, KS. Two children were born to this union Vicky and Marlin. Leonard and Ilene built a farm and ranching legacy together for 50 years. Every farming and family decision was made together. &nbsp;Ilene helped with summer and fall harvest, harvest meals, checking cows, riding horses and motorcycles/4-wheelers. &nbsp;Ilene was an integral part of the farm operation and managing the farm finances. Ilene also cared for her mother, Myrtle, for many years at the farm. &nbsp;Leonard and Ilene had 50 years together before his death in 12-28-2001 on Marlin’s 34th birthday. Ilene Norton

Gerald “Jake” Tomlinson passed away on Feb. 24, 2024, at Hays Medical Center. Jake was born to Darlene (Boese) and Cecil Tomlinson on Jan. 22, 1953, in Hoisington. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Liebenthal. He graduated from McCracken High School in 1971. He joined the Army in 1971, serving at Fort Riley, until his discharge in 1974.

On Aug. 19, 1972, Jake married the love of his life Kathleen Herrman at the St. Joseph Church in Liebenthal. They were blessed with a happy healthy son, Shiloh, on July 23, 1973. They made their home in Ness City where Jake began his career with Cheyenne Oil. They eventually moved to McCracken and later to La Crosse. After retiring from the oilfield, Jake worked as the maintenance man at the Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. He had a great work ethic and always gave his all when working.

Jake never met a person he didn’t like, and his sense of humor was one of his greatest attributes. His passions were working on vehicles and boating at Cedar Bluff with his family and friends.

Jake was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Tomlinson; his mother, Darlene Hunt; his mother and father-in-law, Wilbert and Dolores Herrman; and brothers-in-law, Larry Gates and Doug Seachris.

Jake will be deeply missed by his wife, Kathy; his son, Shiloh; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; the two “daughters” that came and never left, Debra Zogleman and Vicki Gerstner; siblings: Tom (Shirley) Tomlinson, Marcketta Gates, Beverly Seachris, Cindy (Doug Schmidt) Ash, and Mike Riedel; sister-in-law, Janett (Ben) Rogers; brother-in-law, Darryl (Sherri) Herrman; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at St. Joseph Church in Liebenthal. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow in the Saint Joseph Cemetery.

Darletta “Darla” Sue (Lewis) Sealock, age 61 of Hoxie, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Brookdale of College Square in Overland Park, Kansas Darla was born February 21, 1963, in Hoxie, Kansas to Delbert and Dorthoy “Dottie” (Randolph) Lewis. Darla grew up in Hoxie and attended the Hoxie School graduating with the class of 1981. Darla was united in marriage to Lester Phillip Sealock on August 15, 1981, at the Hoxie Christian Church. Darla and Les lived in Hoxie where they raised their family.

Darla attended and graduated from the Hays Academy of Hair Design. She worked with Annette Follis as a cosmetologist. While she enjoyed working as a cosmetologist, she enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She loved her grandbabies and was very possessive of them. The annual Lewis Family Reunion was something Darla never missed. She was an excellent cook, loved to travel, and loved working outside with her flowers. Darla and Les loved to dance, and she was ready to go anytime there was a dance. Another favorite thing Darla enjoyed was going on “sister trips.” She was a part of the Sheridan County Benefit Walk organizational team for many years. She enjoyed helping others whenever she could. Darla was a devout Christian loving and serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Darla was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Lester “Les” Phillip Sealock of Hoxie, Kansas; children, Deadria Lewis (Dustin) of Osawatomie, Kansas, Shaylin Sealock of Hoxie, Kansas, Taunie Sealock of Oakley, Kansas, and Britton Sealock and fiancé’ Jasmine of Hoxie, Kansas; father, Delbert Lewis; mother-in-law, Wanda Sealock; sisters, Deb Smith (Daniel), Daylene Tracy (Jim), and Daresa Denis (Roger); brother Doug Lewis (Bonnie); and grandchildren, Persephanie Sealock, Rogan Lewis, Reid Lewis, Rory Lewis, Zipporah Torres, Mila Martinez, and Harvey Sealock.

Darletta "Darla Sue "Lewis" Sealock

Elizabeth “Betty” Rose (McClelland) Brewster was born Nov. 28, 1928, on the family farm near Studley.

She passed away on Feb. 22, 2024, at the age of 95 while as a resident of the Sheridan County LTCU in Hoxie. Betty was the third youngest child of seven children of Thomas Earl and Martha Marie (Feiler) McClelland. Her siblings were Arthur, Thomas, Clarence, Dora, Ada, Homer (Mac), and infant sister Olivia who died at birth.

Betty started school at Holly Creek Country School, which was around a 3-mile walk one way. They had many frosted fingers and toes walking to school. When the new school was built at Tasco, she finished grade school there. After four years of attending high school in Hoxie, she went to Denver for a year at Central Business College. After completing her courses, she worked at the Singer Sewing Company in Denver but didn’t like the big city life and returned to Hoxie to work as a secretary for the high school.

Growing up, their mother taught the three girls to sew their own dresses and blouses and grow vegetables in a large garden. The family had an old pump organ that she learned to play at a very young age. Their faith in God was a very important foundation of their upbringing as they attended the Presbyterian Church in Tasco. Come rain or shine, their family hardly ever missed church services. Her family loved to sing hymns together, especially on Saturday nights.

Betty's youngest brother, Mac, was a very close friend to her and accompanied her to a friend's wedding dance where she met the love of her life, Gerald Brewster. He had just returned home from being in the WW2 conflict in Germany. On June 6, 1948, they were married. They attended the Lucerne Church of Christ where they were both baptized by immersion together in a stock tank at the country church. To this union, three children were born: Ellen, Teresa and Robert “Bob." Before the kids could hardly talk, they learned to sing as Betty played the piano. They always did their best to get the family to church because they wanted them to have a personal relationship with their Lord and Savior.

After almost 50 years on the farm, Gerald and Betty moved to Hoxie. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Gerald's passing.

Betty was always active in church functions; Bible School, Sunday School teacher, cooking meals, singing in quartets, and playing the piano or organ for church services and the LTCU services on Wednesday night.

Betty is survived by her children and their spouses; Ellen (Jim) Howard, Teresa (Eric) Follis, and Bob (Jana) Brewster; grandchildren; Lance Shipley, Angela (Shipley) Wolgram, Karen (Follis) Lyles, Jon Follis, Victor Follis, Travis Brewster, Amanda (Brewster) Richards, Loren Howard, Chara (Howard) Heese, and Julie (Howard) Taylor, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, brothers and sisters and their spouses, and granddaughter, Robin (Shipley) Pyles.

The family is grateful for the loving care given to their mother by the staff at the Sheridan County LTCU in Hoxie.

A celebration of life service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, south of Studley. She will be laid to rest beside her devoted husband, Gerald in the Lucerne Cemetery, Sheridan County.

There will be a visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 1 at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5 to 6 p.m.

Elizabeth Rose Brewster

Lore (Lori) Marie (Rendigs) Miller was born during World War II on June 26th, 1943 in Twistringen, Germany to Albert and Elfriede (Addicks) Rendigs. She grew up in Leste near the city of Bremen in Northern Germany. Lori’s relatives and friends, who all reside in Germany, have mostly come to visit her in Kansas, including her parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

After receiving her education, on the invitation of her parents’ friends who lived in New York City, Lori arrived in New York Harbor on November 14th, 1961 on the ship “Berlin”. She quickly found work as a Nanny of a wonderful family with three children. &nbsp;She began evening classes to learn conversational English and US History and fell in love with New York. Lori had promised her family she would only stay one year in the US, but she returned to Germany after ten months. Four months after her return to Germany, she decided to come back to the US for another year to see other parts of the country with an adventurous spirit.

During this following trip back at the end of January, 1963, on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on the Ship “Bremen”, she met her future husband. &nbsp;Lore Rendigs and Larry Miller of Agra, KS were married on November 30th, 1963 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, KS. They went for their Honeymoon to Copenhagen, Denmark and to Germany so Larry could meet all of the family.

Lori was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, KS and held various positions as a Sunday and Bible school teacher and church reader. She was also active for a number of years at the Fred Marran American Legion Post #166 Ladies Auxiliary where she was elected to the position of Auxiliary President. &nbsp;That same day, in 1969, she received her United States Citizenship in Oberlin, Kansas and changed her name from Lore to Lori.

Lori entered into the hearing aid profession later and enjoyed a successful 20 year career until retirement. Lori and Larry moved from the farm to Kearney, NE, getting closer to better health care, and were excited to purchase their retirement home and enjoy new friends and experiences. They additionally became members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Lori and Larry celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary together, and they cherished the many family trips around the country and the world.

Lori loved to travel, play Rumikub and bridge, read, and knit.

Lori is survived by her daughter Holly Clark and Glenn Beyer of Holloway, MN;&nbsp;son Carey of Las Vegas, NV; three grandchildren Aric Clark and great grandchild Jaxon of Muscotah, KS, Adam Clark with great grandchild Feurie of Neodesha, KS, and Taylor Miller of Las Vegas, NV; sister Hanna Buddelman; brother Albert; sister-in-law Lisa Rendigs; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins of Germany; brother-in-law Gary Miller and wife Annie Miller of Florida; and nieces and nephews in the United States.

Four months after her return to Germany, she decided to come back to the US for another year to see other parts of the country with an adventurous spirit.During this following trip back at the end of January, 1963, on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on the Ship “Bremen”, she met her future husband. &nbsp;Lore Rendigs and Larry Miller of Agra, KS were married on November 30th, 1963 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, KS. They went for their Honeymoon to Copenhagen, Denmark and to Germany so Larry could meet all of the family.Lori was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, KS and held various positions as a Sunday and Bible school teacher and church reader. She was also active for a number of years at the Fred Marran American Legion Post #166 Ladies Auxiliary where she was elected to the position of Auxiliary President. &nbsp;That same day, in 1969, she received her United States Citizenship in Oberlin, Kansas and changed her name from Lore to Lori.Lori entered into the hearing aid profession later and enjoyed a successful 20 year career until retirement. Lori and Larry moved from the farm to Kearney, NE, getting closer to better health care, and were excited to purchase their retirement home and enjoy new friends and experiences. They additionally became members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Lori and Larry celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary together, and they cherished the many family trips around the country and the world.Lori loved to travel, play Rumikub and bridge, read, and knit.Lori is survived by her daughter Holly Clark and Glenn Beyer of Holloway, MN;&nbsp;son Carey of Las Vegas, NV; three grandchildren Aric Clark and great grandchild Jaxon of Muscotah, KS, Adam Clark with great grandchild Feurie of Neodesha, KS, and Taylor Miller of Las Vegas, NV; sister Hanna Buddelman; brother Albert; sister-in-law Lisa Rendigs; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins of Germany; brother-in-law Gary Miller and wife Annie Miller of Florida; and nieces and nephews in the United States.She is preceded in death by infant sons Douglas Miller and Ryan Miller, husband Larry Miller, her parents Albert and Elfriede Rendigs, and sister Traute Bruenig.Cremation was planned. &nbsp;A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 in the St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, with Pastor Kathy Whitney officiating. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Kensington.Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Lutheran Cemetery or Team Schnak Strong Fund which helps send kids with Type 1 Diabetes to Camp Discovery.
