We had to say goodbye to a precious lady. Kathleen Mae Byerly, age 87, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the McPherson Hospital in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born on October 14, 1936, in Towner, Colorado to Russell and Jania McWilliams Hofmeister. On June 17, 1956, she married William (Bill) Byerly in Towner, Colorado. He survives.

Kathy is survived by her husband; daughters - Kimbra (Clinton) Sides of McPherson, Kansas; Tamara (Kevin) Winn of Wichita, Kansas; and Cindra (John) Lloyd-Mace of McPherson, Kansas. Nine grandchildren - Danielle (Grant) Claassen of McPherson, Kansas; Levi (Kayla) Sides of McPherson, Kansas; Katelyn (Cole) Smith of Prairie Village, Kansas; Garrett Winn of Eugene, Oregon; Eric (Laura) Lloyd of Shawnee, Kansas; Jackson Lloyd of McPherson, Kansas; Nathan (Fiance Stacey Pham) Lloyd of McPherson, Kansas; John Mace, Jr. of McPherson, Kansas; and Michael Mace of Lindsborg, Kansas. Ten great-grandchildren - Ian, Ana, and Caleb Claassen; Kyson, Vivica, Everly, Devlyn, and Genevieve Sides; Kelly Hannah and Dakota Purcell. A sister, Russella Cathcart of Hooker, Oklahoma, and numerous other relatives.

Kathleen is preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Raymond, and sister Ellen Easley.

Kathy had been a member of the Tribune community since 1956 where she spent time working in an abstracting office and in the FSA office. She was a 4-H leader and enjoyed dancing, playing tennis, bowling, and card games. She and Bill enjoyed the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and several foreign countries.&nbsp;

Kathy was a loving and hardworking partner with Bill on the farm. She wasn’t afraid to help with anything that needed to be done. Her greatest joy was her family and she made every effort to be involved in the lives of her children as well as in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Toward the end of her life, Kathy became very weak and frail. Her stubbornness and willpower to fight was fierce. Kathy's passing has left a huge hole in our hearts and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. (Mountain Time), on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Tribune United Methodist Church in Tribune, Kansas with Pastors Jeri Smith and Shannon Schneider presiding. Services will be live-streamed at www.priceandsons.com or https://evt.live/byerly_service.

Public visitation will be on Sunday, April 21, 2024, from 4:00 until 8:00 at the Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, 322 2nd St., Tribune, Kansas.

Dale David Ehrlich, 81, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday April 17, 2024, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas surrounded by his loving family.

Dale was born on July 29, 1942, on the family farm in rural Russell, Kansas, the son of David C. and Amelia (Ehrlich) Ehrlich.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1960.&nbsp; He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Twyla Mae Krug on February 27, 1965, in Russell.&nbsp; From this union Dale and Twyla were blessed with 3 children, Thomas, Tori and Tami.&nbsp; Dale worked as a heavy equipment operator for several companies but most of his working years were spent with Koch Industries.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell and was also a member of the Elks Lodge.&nbsp; Dale was an outdoorsman and had a love for fishing, mowing the lawn, attending sporting events, drag races, car shows, and visiting with others but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and granddaughter.

Surviving family include his wife, of 59 years, Twyla of the home, daughters Tori Hall and husband Roy of Russell, Kansas and Tami Ehrlich of Manhattan, Kansas; granddaughter Halle Anderson and husband Colton of Russell, Kansas; sister Angeline Green of Russell, Kansas; niece Gwenna Green of Russell, Kansas; and nephew Lionel Green of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Thomas D. Ehrlich. A celebration of Dale’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. Allen Spencer Ward, 63, of Norton, KS passed away April 17, 2024 at the Norton County Hospital. He was born October 14, 1960 in Norton, KS to Gwynn and Mary (Mathes) Ward.

Allen grew up on the family farm near Clayton and attended school there and then he graduated from Jennings High School in 1978. After high school, he attended Salina Area Technical School and studied electronics. Allen worked for Walter Motor Co. as a mechanic for many years. He was an all-around handyman; he could fix just about anything. He was also talented at making windchimes and woodworking, he even went as far as milling his own lumber. Allen enjoyed nature from watching birds and trapping animals to hunting bears in New Hampshire and Maine. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Allen is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Joshua) Stalder and her children: Jiah Johnson, Dominic Johnson, Liam Hester, Bjorn Hester, and Jonathan Stalder all of Beaver City, NE; sisters: Kris (Harold) Mizell of Norton and Gail (DeMerle) Eckart of Minneapolis, KS; stepmother, Judy Ward of Loveland, CO, and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gwynn and Mary Ward and son, Michael Ward.

Erik C. Jensen, age 55, of Larned, Kansas passed away on Sunday April 14, 2024 in Larned.

He was born October 10, 1968 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Donald Arthur and Grethe Rostgaard Petersen Jensen.

Erik was a graduate of Larned High School, and attended Vo-Tech school for Auto-Body Repair. Erik was recently employed with the Pawnee County Landfill and Ward Feed Yard. He enjoyed both hunting and spending time at the lake with family and friends.

Survivors Include: his mother, Grethe Jensen, Larned; son, Christian (Alexis) Jensen, Colorado; daughter, Brianne Jensen, Colorado; six grandchildren; three siblings and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Donald Jensen and a nephew, Taylan Donaho.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a celebration of memories from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. A private family inurnment will be in Larned Cemetery.

James E. Wassenberg, 84, of Salina passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024.&nbsp; He was born August 20, 1939, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Chris and Gertie Wassenberg, and was raised in Marysville.

He is survived by his wife, Dee, of the home; daughters, Renee Moritz of Hays, and Julie Wassenberg of Marquette; stepchildren, Tami Stone of Gladstone, Missouri, Matt Hertig of Lawrence, and Tara Hertig of Bennington; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and brothers, Donald Wassenberg of Marysville, Chris Wassenberg of Reno, Nevada, and David Wassenberg of Salina.

Danny K. Barnett, 77 of Oakley, Kansas, formally of Effingham, Kansas, was born on September 3, 1946, in Laramie, Wyoming to Kenneth and Esther Beth Barnett. He died Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.

Danny attended school at the Gem and Monument, Kansas Elementary schools. Danny attended Effingham Grade School and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1964. He attended Highland Junior College and Kansas State University.

On June 10th, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Kay Hinz. Soon after, Danny was drafted into the U.S. Army for two years, and served from 1968-1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Barnett was part of the 1st Cavalry Division; Company D, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry and very proud of his service to the country. Danny earned the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Service Stars, Air Medal and the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device.

Danny and Mary resided in Atchison County after his honorable discharge as the rank of Sergeant in 1969, until 2018 when they moved to Oakley, Kansas to be closer to family.

Danny was a dairy farmer with his father and part owner in the Cedar Maple Guernsey Dairy Farm in Effingham, Kansas. He then served as the Emergency Manager for Atchison County and was EMS director for 19 years. While in this role, he assisted in assigning addresses for the 9-1-1 system and filled the role of Noxious Weed director.

Danny joined the Effingham Presbytery Church in 1960, later serving on the church board. He also served on the Atchison County Dairy Board, Jaycees, Fire Department, American Guernsey Association, Member of the VFW Life Member, and was the leader of the Effingham Community 4-H Club.

Danny is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife Mary Kay of Oakley, his daughter, Dana Kay, resident of Lakeside Terrace, Sabetha, Kansas; Tim and (Sheila) of Goodland, and Kevin of Oakley; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who he loved very much; siblings Steve and (Julie) Barnett of Springfield, MO, Becky O’Brien of Effingham, Kansas and Kris and (David) Shell of Atchison, Kansas, along with numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Services will be held at Oakley Christian Church, at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024. Burial will take place at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas, at 2:15 PM. There will be a memorial in Effingham, Kansas on Sunday, May 5, 2024. He also served on the Atchison County Dairy Board, Jaycees, Fire Department, American Guernsey Association, Member of the VFW Life Member, and was the leader of the Effingham Community 4-H Club.Danny is preceded in death by his parents. Vera Mary (Sander) Hoffman, age 88, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Homestead, in Hays.

She was born June 7, 1935, on the family farm north of Walker to Anton and Rosa (Nemechek) Sander.

On May 30, 1964, she married James (Jim) Hoffman in Hays. She was a wife, homemaker, and babysitter for neighbors, friends, and family. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays. She enjoyed listening to Jim play his piano and playing Bingo at Homestead. Her best years were being with Jim, the love of her life.

She is survived by three sisters; Sister Helen Sander, Fond du Lac, WI; Lillian Nowak, Salina, KS; Rosie Nash, Dallas, TX; and a brother, Lawrence Sander, Salina, KS; sister-in-law, Lillian Pfeifer, Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Evelyn Sander, Mary Schuster Deines, Sophie Zerr, Sister Viola Sander, two brothers, Daniel Sander, and Louis Sander.

Adolfo Espitia Jordan, 56, died April 16, 2024 at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born September 27, 1967 in Delicias, Mexico the son of Leonardo and Blanca Olga (Jordan) Espitia.

Adolfo attended and graduated from schools in Mexico before moving first to El Paso and later Garden City in the 1980’s. He married Consuelo Centano Arana in Garden City July 20, 2018. She survives He was a gifted mechanic and owned his own shop at one point in his life. He was very social and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He had mild temperament and good sense of humor even when circumstances were difficult in his life. 

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18. 

He will be remembered for his giving spirit and willingness to help all who asked.

Colleen's life was one of profound impact and unwavering dedication. Her journey was marked by moments of triumph and resilience, shaping her into the remarkable woman she was known to be. She touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In 1983, Colleen married Donald Clark, in Nebraska. Together, they embarked on a journey that led them to Kansas in 1984. Tragically, Donald passed away in 1985, leaving Colleen to navigate life's challenges with unwavering strength and grace.

Colleen's thirst for knowledge and passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in drug and rehabilitation counseling. She attended school in various places including Grand island, Nebraska, Topeka, Kansas, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Latina Hills, California, Wichita, Kansas, Dodge City, Kansas, and Garden City, Kansas. She was always integrating new information and ideas into her practice, honing her skills and becoming instrumental in the opening of several rehabilitation facilities. Her reputation and impact extended far beyond the borders of Kansas, garnering recognition even on the West Coast. Colleen's dedication to her profession was unrivaled, and she co-founded Unlimited Beginnings in Dodge City and established her own practice, Choices &amp; Beginnings, in Garden City. Her commitment to empowering and assisting those in need was a testament to her compassionate heart.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Colleen found joy in various hobbies and activities. She had a passion for playing the organ, a talent she possessed despite not being able to read music. Francisco grew up in Mexico. He married Rosa Corrales on April 21, 1969, in Mexico. They came to Ulysses in 2018 from Andrews, Texas. He loved farming and driving tractors. He enjoyed family gatherings, and he was always looking out for and worrying about his family’s welfare. Francisco and Rosa enjoyed sitting outside their house and visiting with the neighbors.

Francisco is survived by his children, Josefina Flores of Ojinaga, Mexico, José Guadalupe Corrales of Johnson, Francisco Corrales, Jr. of Johnson, and Mayra Pando of Johnson; sister, Margarita Baeaza of Ulysses; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Francisco is preceded in death by his parents, Rafael Corrales and Ambrocia Vitolas, and nine siblings.

Wilma Marie Carr, age 81, died on April 16, 2024, at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City, Kansas. She was born on April 8, 1943, in Ransom, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Dana (Douglass) Ummel.

On October 13, 1969, while living in Neodesha, Kansas she married George Dale Carr in Miami, Oklahoma. They later moved to Alexander, Kansas and then Bazine, later moving to Ness City. Dale preceded Wilma in death on July 8, 2006.

Wilma was a hard worker throughout her life. She was a Certified Nurse’s Assistant and a Certified Medical Assistant. After she retired from hospital work, she worked at Butterfields Convenience Store past her 80th birthday.

She is survived by her son, Jarrod Carr and his wife, Tiffany, of Ellinwood and daughter, Maria Carr of Great Bend; two brothers, Edward and Lester Ummel; two sisters, Barbara Kisslinger and JoAnn Walker; grandson, Brandon Carr; step-grandchildren, Tiara Lawson (Collan) and Nick Espinosa; and step-great granddaughter, Elliana Lawson, along with her many furry grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, Frank Carr.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

After she retired from hospital work, she worked at Butterfields Convenience Store past her 80th birthday.She is survived by her son, Jarrod Carr and his wife, Tiffany, of Ellinwood and daughter, Maria Carr of Great Bend; two brothers, Edward and Lester Ummel; two sisters, Barbara Kisslinger and JoAnn Walker; grandson, Brandon Carr; step-grandchildren, Tiara Lawson (Collan) and Nick Espinosa; and step-great granddaughter, Elliana Lawson, along with her many furry grandchildren. Betty Lou Rodie was born February 14, 1929, on the family farm to Cleo and Louise (Buchholz) Nowlin. She was raised on the farm until the family moved to town. When she was 22 years old, she married Chester (Chet) Klitzke, of Ransom, KS. Two children resulted from the marriage. Louella Klitzke and Lila Kay Klitzke. The couple divorced in 1954.

In 1955 she married Dale Allen Thomas of Dighton, KS. The couple had 5 children. Mark Allen Thomas, who passed away in infancy at 6 months old; son, Kenneth Thomas; daughter, Linda Thomas; son, Richard Thomas; and daughter, Rita Hansen. The couple moved around a lot and settled in Indianola, NE where Betty lost her husband, Dale Thomas, in 1987.

In 1999, Betty married Robert (Bob) Rodie. No children were brought into this marriage. Bob passed away in 2004.

Betty was preceded in death by her; children who died in infancy, Mark Thomas and Lila Kay Klitzke; parents, Cleo and Louise Nowlin; brother, Robert Nowlin; sister, Vera McQueen; and brother, Charlie Nowlin.

Irene Hazen, 100, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Logan County Senior Living, in Oakley, KS. She was born on July 12, 1923, to Nick and Anna (Albers) Roths in Ransom, KS.

Irene married Bill Hazen on November 12, 1946, in Ransom, KS. He died on March 29, 2009.

Irene was a homemaker and provided childcare for many families in Grinnell. She never missed the opportunity to play Bingo and she enjoyed playing card games and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

Irene was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, of Grinnell, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include her four sons, Jim, of Grinnell, Bob (Marla) of Lampe, MO, Dick (Dee), of Salina, KS and Ron (Deb), of Cheyenne, WY; three daughters, Ginger Seibel, of Salina, KS, Marie Schmidt (Virgil), of Golden, CO, and Karen Boys, of Logan, KS; 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Irene Hazen

&nbsp;John Vergil “J.V.” Morgan, 88, retired school psychologist and former wheat farmer, died Thursday at The Gardens at Columbine Retirement Community in Littleton, Colorado, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

John is survived by his wife Dana, who, until recently, when she required extensive physical therapy, also had been living at the Gardens at Columbine.

The two moved to Colorado from Western Kansas in the early 1970s to work as school psychologists. They were drawn to Denver by the skiing, the views, and all that the city of Denver and the mountains had to offer. They were together in Colorado for 51 years.

John started his career in the schools, he once explained, at a time when schools were only beginning to add psychologists to their staffs. He said that at this early stage, those coming into the profession had a bit more room to shape policy than any would have later. He would continue to work with students in schools across the Denver area for years. Over time, he noted changes in what troubled those students and how schools dealt with them. Early surprises—like walking into schools where some classrooms were carpeted, and students flicked their cigarette ashes onto that carpet—faded and new challenges appeared. He never, however, lost interest in young people’s behavior and why they made the sometimes inexplicable, sometimes sad or hilarious decisions they made.He had grown up, the oldest of four, on a wheat farm near Atwood, Kansas. He remembered a childhood that included a lot of helping on the farm; his mother, reminiscing decades later could sharply recall the dangerous play she would hear about at the end of each day. She remembered asking J.V. to read to his younger brothers for some quiet time one afternoon, only to have him come down the stairs a short time later and shake his head. “They’re just too young,” he told her.

The town had a small lake with a bridge which he once claimed, while driving over it with his children, that his high school peers called “the James Dean bridge,” although, of course, this very likely could have been impromptu invention to keep the Atwood tour lively.

At 21, he enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at Fort Knox and later Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. He took the line that required soldiers to train as paratroopers because the sign above that table promised they would make $50 more a month. But the actual jumping from a plane part that followed? He promised that it never got easier with practice and that in fact, with each jump came more terror. And finally, he suggested it might not have been worth the extra $50. The war ended before he could test his skills from Korea skies.

He returned home. His parents convinced him to study at least one year at the extremely conservative Bob Jones University in Greeneville, SC. (The university even regulated dress codes and dating protocol of its students. Young men were expected to ask women on dates by sending notes rather than phoning them.) For reasons unknown to their parents, John and his cousin Cadette, also attending the school, sawed off the top of a red Chevrolet, leaving them with what they saw as a slick-looking convertible. The cousins never explained to their mothers’ satisfaction doing that, or why they had introduced themselves to classmates as cousins from the King Ranch of Texas. John, or J.V. as he was called growing up, never returned to Bob Jones; instead, he found Fort Hays State College a more comfortable fit.

There he met Priscilla Taylor from Kinsley, KS. He married her and moved to Kinsley and began farming there. The two had two children, Elizabeth and Barry. After finishing at Fort Hays, he farmed wheat in Kinsley; he also worked at schools in Pratt and then in Dodge City, KS, on teams working to get Head Start off the ground. Head Start is a government program that had its beginnings in the mid-60s as a practical intervention during the summers for economically disadvantaged children under six to assure they would arrive at school as prepared as other children. (The program is now going strong, and their website studies show that even as adults, those who participated as children tend to have better health, higher levels of education, and higher incomes.)

He had been an early (from his college days at least), loyal and feisty defender of conservative political theory. Way back when, he was a fan of Barry Goldwater, a reader of Ayn Rand, and a consistent viewer of William F. Buckley on Sunday mornings. He viciously criticized left-wing local and national politicians' shenanigans—and occasionally even those on the right.

So, yes—he remained a true conservative believer, a Republican while helping to build a new government education program to help fight poverty during the Vietnam War.

(In his last years, however, after standing steadfast by conservatives through the Reagan years and Bush years, his previously unshakable faith in the US voters to eventually prove they did not suffer fools or worse, conmen, gladly, wavered.)

He divorced Priscilla and moved to Colorado to complete his MA in psychology at the University of Colorado at Greeley.

He and Dana Snook Pyle, who moved to Colorado from Dodge City, took positions as psychologists in Denver schools. In their off-time, the two loved skiing, and fiercely competing against each other in lightning-speed games of backgammon and tennis; they engaged in always-heated political arguments, weekends in the mountains, and family gatherings (some planned, others that were every bit as crowded might be spontaneous).

The two thrived on dining out and going to the movies. John and Dana almost always chose to have meals out rather than at home, and often with family and friends. He kept up with the ever-changing local scene of small, out-of-the-way places in Denver as well as restaurants joining the city’s top places. Once, they read an article describing the actual number of restaurants serving dinner in Denver and realized, with great disappointment, there would be hundreds of local restaurants they’d never have the time to try.

Over time, golf emerged as the pastime he wanted to perfect and knew he couldn’t.

He was asked to babysit his three-year-old grandson one afternoon and brought along a golf club and plastic ball to teach him how to swing. He watched, knowing the kid was swinging just right but with a plastic toy ball it would never go anywhere. He brought over a real golf ball and had his grandson have a go at it. Sure enough, the first time and then again and again, the ball sailed over the fence. Granddad was apparently too elated to consider what yard the balls were landing in. Later, his son would have to talk nicely to his neighbor, to calm him down, a football coach not impressed at all with John’s pride in his grandson.

Another grandson, eight or nine and knowing he was going to see his granddad at a reunion, practiced his golf game until he felt pretty good about it. (This was a granddad, after all, who had tracked down one of the last X Boxes one Christmas in Denver.) And then that day his swing fell apart. He tried so hard to recover that it only made things worse, as did Granddad trying to explain that this is just what happens in golf. Some days are like that.

Dinner with John, at whatever restaurant, was unlike dinner with most anyone else: someone contributing an opinion to a conversation might assume he wasn’t paying attention but would learn quickly enough. He had a commanding way of reentering a discussion, even when almost muttering his pronouncements, but he might have been surprised to know how often people considered him wise.

Often his telling of a story was hilarious because of the way he was overcome with amusement. Or his overreaction to his own retelling was so obviously a sign of his lack of concern for how uniquely he viewed others. Was he serious? Did he really believe his personal intervention in one person’s business choices or an angle on world affairs was the world’s only hope?

He talked about this once. He claimed to be baffled that some people at a recent party he’d gone to found him funny. Two nuns who he’d met had told him they thought he was so funny. “But” he said, “all they had to go on was that I had laughed at them the whole evening.”He often—at least, maybe usually--came across as a curmudgeon, or as a constant critic—someone quite sure there was a better way to wash the dishes than you just had.

About a decade ago, a five-year-old was having dinner with the family for the first time and sat across from him. It seemed only fair—just in case she had gotten the wrong idea and thought he had a problem with her—an adult told her later not to worry if he had seemed grumpy at dinner.

The two had carried on a conversation between watching the divers sail into the waters at the restaurant. But she did not need some expert adult to comfort her or explain John Morgan to her.

She was not troubled at all by what—as John would have called it, her assessment—of the situation.

She said, “No. I’m a kid, so he liked me.”Likely she was right: Humans are interesting creatures, but children’s unpredictable thinking, funny, illogical or even super-logical, long after he retired, to him was pretty close to priceless.

Other survivors include grandchildren, Clinton of Scottsdale, Sarah of Denver; Caleb Rosencutter of Wichita; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stan of Wichita and Kent of Wichita, and a sister, Janelle Rominger of Oklahoma. She remembered asking J.V. to read to his younger brothers for some quiet time one afternoon, only to have him come down the stairs a short time later and shake his head. “They’re just too young,” he told her.The town had a small lake with a bridge which he once claimed, while driving over it with his children, that his high school peers called “the James Dean bridge,” although, of course, this very likely could have been impromptu invention to keep the Atwood tour lively.At 21, he enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at Fort Knox and later Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. He took the line that required soldiers to train as paratroopers because the sign above that table promised they would make $50 more a month. But the actual jumping from a plane part that followed? He promised that it never got easier with practice and that in fact, with each jump came more terror. And finally, he suggested it might not have been worth the extra $50. The war ended before he could test his skills from Korea skies.He returned home. His parents convinced him to study at least one year at the extremely conservative Bob Jones University in Greeneville, SC. (The university even regulated dress codes and dating protocol of its students. Young men were expected to ask women on dates by sending notes rather than phoning them.) For reasons unknown to their parents, John and his cousin Cadette, also attending the school, sawed off the top of a red Chevrolet, leaving them with what they saw as a slick-looking convertible. The cousins never explained to their mothers’ satisfaction doing that, or why they had introduced themselves to classmates as cousins from the King Ranch of Texas. John, or J.V. as he was called growing up, never returned to Bob Jones; instead, he found Fort Hays State College a more comfortable fit.There he met Priscilla Taylor from Kinsley, KS. He married her and moved to Kinsley and began farming there. The two had two children, Elizabeth and Barry. After finishing at Fort Hays, he farmed wheat in Kinsley; he also worked at schools in Pratt and then in Dodge City, KS, on teams working to get Head Start off the ground. Head Start is a government program that had its beginnings in the mid-60s as a practical intervention during the summers for economically disadvantaged children under six to assure they would arrive at school as prepared as other children. (The program is now going strong, and their website studies show that even as adults, those who participated as children tend to have better health, higher levels of education, and higher incomes.)He had been an early (from his college days at least), loyal and feisty defender of conservative political theory. Way back when, he was a fan of Barry Goldwater, a reader of Ayn Rand, and a consistent viewer of William F. Buckley on Sunday mornings. He viciously criticized left-wing local and national politicians' shenanigans—and occasionally even those on the right.So, yes—he remained a true conservative believer, a Republican while helping to build a new government education program to help fight poverty during the Vietnam War.(In his last years, however, after standing steadfast by conservatives through the Reagan years and Bush years, his previously unshakable faith in the US voters to eventually prove they did not suffer fools or worse, conmen, gladly, wavered.)He divorced Priscilla and moved to Colorado to complete his MA in psychology at the University of Colorado at Greeley.He and Dana Snook Pyle, who moved to Colorado from Dodge City, took positions as psychologists in Denver schools. In their off-time, the two loved skiing, and fiercely competing against each other in lightning-speed games of backgammon and tennis; they engaged in always-heated political arguments, weekends in the mountains, and family gatherings (some planned, others that were every bit as crowded might be spontaneous).The two thrived on dining out and going to the movies. John and Dana almost always chose to have meals out rather than at home, and often with family and friends. He kept up with the ever-changing local scene of small, out-of-the-way places in Denver as well as restaurants joining the city’s top places. Once, they read an article describing the actual number of restaurants serving dinner in Denver and realized, with great disappointment, there would be hundreds of local restaurants they’d never have the time to try.Over time, golf emerged as the pastime he wanted to perfect and knew he couldn’t.He was asked to babysit his three-year-old grandson one afternoon and brought along a golf club and plastic ball to teach him how to swing. He watched, knowing the kid was swinging just right but with a plastic toy ball it would never go anywhere. He brought over a real golf ball and had his grandson have a go at it. Sure enough, the first time and then again and again, the ball sailed over the fence. Granddad was apparently too elated to consider what yard the balls were landing in. Later, his son would have to talk nicely to his neighbor, to calm him down, a football coach not impressed at all with John’s pride in his grandson.Another grandson, eight or nine and knowing he was going to see his granddad at a reunion, practiced his golf game until he felt pretty good about it. (This was a granddad, after all, who had tracked down one of the last X Boxes one Christmas in Denver.) And then that day his swing fell apart. He tried so hard to recover that it only made things worse, as did Granddad trying to explain that this is just what happens in golf. Some days are like that.Dinner with John, at whatever restaurant, was unlike dinner with most anyone else: someone contributing an opinion to a conversation might assume he wasn’t paying attention but would learn quickly enough. He had a commanding way of reentering a discussion, even when almost muttering his pronouncements, but he might have been surprised to know how often people considered him wise.Often his telling of a story was hilarious because of the way he was overcome with amusement. Or his overreaction to his own retelling was so obviously a sign of his lack of concern for how uniquely he viewed others. Was he serious? Did he really believe his personal intervention in one person’s business choices or an angle on world affairs was the world’s only hope?He talked about this once. He claimed to be baffled that some people at a recent party he’d gone to found him funny. Two nuns who he’d met had told him they thought he was so funny. “But” he said, “all they had to go on was that I had laughed at them the whole evening.”He often—at least, maybe usually--came across as a curmudgeon, or as a constant critic—someone quite sure there was a better way to wash the dishes than you just had.About a decade ago, a five-year-old was having dinner with the family for the first time and sat across from him. It seemed only fair—just in case she had gotten the wrong idea and thought he had a problem with her—an adult told her later not to worry if he had seemed grumpy at dinner.The two had carried on a conversation between watching the divers sail into the waters at the restaurant. But she did not need some expert adult to comfort her or explain John Morgan to her.She was not troubled at all by what—as John would have called it, her assessment—of the situation.She said, “No. I’m a kid, so he liked me.”Likely she was right: Humans are interesting creatures, but children’s unpredictable thinking, funny, illogical or even super-logical, long after he retired, to him was pretty close to priceless.Other survivors include grandchildren, Clinton of Scottsdale, Sarah of Denver; Caleb Rosencutter of Wichita; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stan of Wichita and Kent of Wichita, and a sister, Janelle Rominger of Oklahoma. He is also survived by sisters-in-law April Snook, Jana Lewis, Robyn Schoonover, Barbara Snook, Sally Snook, and brothers-in-law Jim Snook, all of Colorado, and Charlie Snook of Newton, KS, and nephews and nieces.A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Chardon Cemetery, Chardon, Kansas. Jeffrey Douglas Pratt&nbsp;was born in Hays, KS to Steve and Claudia (Parker) Pratt on September 24, 1966. He was the second of three children. Jeff attended Hays Public Schools through the 10th&nbsp;grade, and then attended Thomas More Prep, graduating in 1985. After high school graduation, he attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1990 with a degree in accounting. While at the University, he met the love of his life, Patricia Janssen (hometown – Salina). They were married on April 6, 1991, and moved to Bellevue, Washington that summer. Jeff immediately found work in the world of accounting and landed a role at Microsoft where he worked for 26 years. In 2019, Jeff joined Core Scientific based in Austin, TX, which had him traveling all around the world.&nbsp;

In the summer of 2016 Jeff learned that his uncle, Don H. Pratt had decided to sell the real estate and self-storage business in Hays that he had owned for many years. &nbsp;Jeff and his family purchased the business from Don on 1-2-2017. They expanded it by purchasing the Havco location on W. 28th&nbsp;Street in 2018, and just a few weeks ago opened a third self-storage facility on Canterbury Rd. Even though Jeff had lived in the Seattle area for 25 years, he still had Hays in his heart and was very happy to purchase an entity that had been originated by his grandfather, Don E. Pratt, and Pete Felten in 1958, keeping it in the family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jeff and Tricia were blessed with two children, Henry in 1998 and Stella in 2000.&nbsp;During his life,&nbsp;Jeff&nbsp;had many passions including Henry &amp; Stella’s youth sports,&nbsp;Mariners baseball,&nbsp;skiing,&nbsp;collecting baseball cards,&nbsp;and golf. Most of all,&nbsp;Jeff&nbsp;loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;Devotion to his family was Jeff’s highest priority in life.&nbsp;

He&nbsp;is survived by his wife, Tricia,&nbsp;his son, Henry,&nbsp;and daughter, Stella. Both Henry and Stella are graduates of the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, Seattle, with degrees in&nbsp;accounting,&nbsp;following in&nbsp;their father's footsteps.&nbsp;He is also survived by his parents, (Hays, KS), and his brother, Joe Pratt (Renton, WA), and his sister, Larisa Eichacker (Santa Monica, CA), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;funeral Mass is scheduled for April 27, 2024 at 12PM noon&nbsp;at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center, 506 West 6th&nbsp;St., Hays, KS. An inurnment ceremony at the Hays Columbarium, for the family only, will follow the Mass.

&nbsp;A luncheon in memory of Jeff will be held at The Venue at Thirsty’s Restaurant from 2-4PM. Friends and family are all invited.&nbsp;

The family suggests memorial contributions be addressed to the Comeau Catholic Campus Center.&nbsp;
