Pamela Sue Patterson passed away Thursday May 16, 2024, at her home in Sublette, Kansas. She was born November 29, 1960 in Coffeyville, Kansas; the daughter of Arthur Leroy and Georgia Merle (Reed) Wade.

Pam graduated from Sedan High School in 1978 and married Dean Quentin Patterson June 18, 1983 in Peru, Kansas. The two relocated to Western Kansas in 1984 where they planted their roots and raised their two sons. Pam worked as a paraprofessional at Sublette Elementary School for many years until her retirement in 2018. Following her retirement, she dedicated her time to being a full-time Grammy to her four grandchildren.

She enjoyed traveling to Colorado, cooking and baking for her loved ones, gardening, trips to the zoo with her grandchildren, and she never turned down chocolate or a diet coke from Sonic! She was a kind, caring, and loving individual, known for being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

John Francis Brent, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas, passed peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born January 3, 1942, in Alton, Kansas, to Ola LeRoy and Helen Elizabeth (Weethee) Brent.

John married Janice Irene Troxel on December 23, 1962. They settled with their family in Ulysses. Their home provided a setting for many happy memories and family gatherings. John was an accomplished musician. He could hear something and play it with his own flair and style on the organ, piano, or his instrument of choice, the accordion. His passion for music was shared with many and was passed down to his children and grandchildren. John lived his last few years at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City and enjoyed the daily visits from Shelia. He loved flowers and they kept the flowerpots full.

John is survived by his sister, Roma Dorain York of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; three children, Cheryl James and husband, Charles, of Conroe, Texas, Gregg Brent and wife, Sandra, of Nokomis, Florida, and Shelia Eichman and husband, Laverne of Dodge City, Kansas; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one due in August.

Virginia Lee (Armbruster) Loflin, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home on May 18 th, 2024, to be with her lord and savior, reuniting with Billy. She was born on June 22, 1935, in Hays, Kansas to Lou and Edna (Zachman) Armbruster. She graduated in 1952 from Ellis High School and received training at Steward Beauty Academy in Salina, working first at Paul’s Beauty Shop in Hays. She and a friend traveled by train to San Bernardino California where she worked as a nanny for about a year. She then moved to Ellis and worked for Adamine Keller at the Beauty Bungalow and later ran it. She married William David Loflin on July 28, 1955, where she lived and worked alongside Billy on his family farm south of Ogallah until moving to Ellis in 1992. She was a lifelong baptized member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. She was on the church council, a member of Women of Life, the quilting group, and taught Sunday school. She made many quilts throughout her lifetime. She ran a bus for the WaKeeney school district for 30 years, gave tours at the Chrysler Boyhood Home, and worked for Ellis school district as a bus driver, lunchroom aid, and front office help while becoming “grandma” to many children. She was awarded the Teacher Hall of Fame this year by the Ellis High School Alumni Association.

Virginia is survived by. Two daughters, Tonya Keller husband Ernie of rural Trego County, and Geraldine (Jeri) Irwin/Jamison of WaKeeney. Five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Nicholas Keller and wife Carmen of Ellis with their children, Brielyn and Adler. Kassandra (Irwin) Nyirenda and husband Zabu of Overland Park with their daughter Brecklyn. Daniel Irwin and wife Amber of Hays with their children Bryce and Briley. Kevin Keller and wife Kylie of Ogallah with their child Cooper and one expected in June. Brian Keller and Genevieve Lariviere of Loveland, Colorado. One sister Mary Lou Walters and two brothers Ronald Armbruster and Paul Armbruster.

Wanda dedicated many years of her life serving as caregiver and CNA at The Good Samaritan Society. Her commitment to caring for others left a lasting impact on those she had the privilege of helping. Beyond her professional endeavors, Wanda found joy in various hobbies and interests. She was an avid Bingo player, cherished spending time with her loved ones, and excelled in the art of knitting and crocheting.On September 13, 1966, Wanda embarked on a beautiful journey of love and partnership when she married Frederick Dean Rundle in Seoul. Together, they shared a deep bond that lasted a lifetime until Frederick's passing in 2020. Wanda proudly embraced her Korean heritage by sharing her family's traditional recipes with friends and loved ones—a testament to her culinary skills and cultural pride.

Wanda leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will forever be cherished by her surviving family members: her daughters Angel Gray and Sue Ann Rundle of Hays; brothers-in-law Gary Rundle of Ottawa, Kansas, and Larry Rundle of Clay Center, Kansas; grandchildren Christopher Gray and Amanda Gray of Hays, Zachary Rundle of Olathe, Kansas, and Marissa Rundle of Hays; as well as six great-grandchildren with another on the way.

Wilma P. (Kurth) Lancaster, 94, passed away with her family by her side on May 12, 2024 at Country Living Nursing Home in Larned. She was born on February 20, 1930 in Ford County, Kansas the daughter of A.C. and Lena (Weiss) Kurth.&nbsp;

Wilma attended elementary school at the Golden Eagle School, District #14 located on her parents property. She graduated from Offerle High School in 1947 as class Valedictorian. On September 11, 1947 she married R. Duane Lancaster. They were privileged to spend 57 years together.

She was first and foremost a farm wife and helped in all aspects of farming. Wilma also was the lunchroom manager at the Offerle Middle School from 1970 to 1984. She then took the job as rural mail carrier at the Offerle Post Office. Wilma worked there from 1984 until her retirement in January of 1998. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, LWML of Offerle, American Legion Auxiliary, National Association Retired Federal Employees, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and Red Hats of Edwards County.

Wilma is survived by her children, Sidney Hicks of Offerle, Shelley Schmidt and husband Dale Haselhorst of Hays, and Bret Lancaster and wife Debbie of Offerle; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grand daughter, 5 step grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren, and 4 step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Duane; a daughter, Sharolyn; a great grandson, Stanton Lancaster, 4 brothers, Rev. Esther “Mae” Wilkens, of Stockton, KS, passed away on May 13, 2024, in Hays, KS at the age of 86. She was born on July 29, 1937, to Ernst August Martin and Blanche Orene (Stamper) Erdman in Dundy County, NE. She married Arthur “Art” Wilkens on November 28, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Benkelman, NE. They were blessed with seven children: Chuck, Debra, Kent, Steven, Tony, Brenda, and Lisa.

Mae graduated from Haigler High School in 1955. She met Art while working in Benkelman as a nurse’s aide. Once married, Mae devoted herself with great care to the good of her family. Mae went to Northwest Kansas Vocational Technical School in Goodland, KS and completed the office occupations course. Her family is proud that she was named Student of the Year in 1981 at her graduation!

Mae was a homemaker. She loved music, gardening, sewing, canning, cooking, baking, and people. Being quick to care, her nurse’s spirit never waned. She enjoyed traveling as the opportunities came, whether with her husband, friends, or family. She enjoyed making everything beautiful, whether setting a beautiful table or watering flowers. Her house was often filled with music, especially around the holidays. She loved making memories with her children and grandchildren gathered around the piano. Having accumulated wisdom through the years, Mae was known for sage advice. She never proclaimed to be perfect yet did her best in every situation to love others well. Esther “Mae” Wilkens, of Stockton, KS, passed away on May 13, 2024, in Hays, KS at the age of 86. She was born on July 29, 1937, to Ernst August Martin and Blanche Orene (Stamper) Erdman in Dundy County, NE. She married Arthur “Art” Wilkens on November 28, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Benkelman, NE. They were blessed with seven children: Chuck, Debra, Kent, Steven, Tony, Brenda, and Lisa.Mae graduated from Haigler High School in 1955. She met Art while working in Benkelman as a nurse’s aide. Once married, Mae devoted herself with great care to the good of her family. Mae went to Northwest Kansas Vocational Technical School in Goodland, KS and completed the office occupations course. Her family is proud that she was named Student of the Year in 1981 at her graduation!Mae was a homemaker. She loved music, gardening, sewing, canning, cooking, baking, and people. Being quick to care, her nurse’s spirit never waned. She enjoyed traveling as the opportunities came, whether with her husband, friends, or family. She enjoyed making everything beautiful, whether setting a beautiful table or watering flowers. Her house was often filled with music, especially around the holidays. She loved making memories with her children and grandchildren gathered around the piano. Having accumulated wisdom through the years, Mae was known for sage advice. Esther "Mae" Wilkens

&nbsp;Thomas Carrow, 80, of Atwood, died May 8, 2024. He was born on September 20, 1943, in Kane, PA, to George and Eugenia (Suain) Carrow. Two years later, a sister, Sallie, was born. The family lived in Hazel Hurst, PA, until George took a job with Getty Oil and the company asked him to move to Illinois. Tom was 12 years old when they moved to Robinson, Illinois.

Tom had attended Hazel Hurst Elementary and Robinson Middle School before graduating from Robinson High School. He took classes at Eastern Illinois University and worked for Marton Oil and Getty Oil. Tom also taught 6th grade for one year at Muffley Grade School. From 1966-1969, he served in the United States Army. Tom did his basic training at Fort Benning where he made Lieutenant, and was stationed in Germany during his service. Upon his return from the Army, he bought a motorcycle and traveled the Alcan Highway, in Alaska.

In 1971, Tom moved to Castro Valley, CA, where he met Denise “Dee” Torak. They were married in 1972 and to this union three children were born. In 1975, the family moved back to Illinois and Tom worked for Getty Oil. They built a home on five acres near Hardinville, IL, where they lived until 1984, when they moved to Colorado. There Tom worked for Koch Fiberglass and helped grow the company in Canada and California. He sold fiberglass pipe to distributors and then helped install pipe. They lived in Elizabeth, CO for 23 years before buying a farm near Atwood, KS and moving there. In Atwood he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #164 and enjoyed garage sales, auctions and the farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a stillborn sister.

Tom is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dee; daughter Laura (Tony) McDonald; sons, Matt Carrow (Kendall Tinnes) and Mike Carrow; four grandchildren, Sierra Scott, Adrianna Tinnes, Teagan Carrow and Wyatt Carrow; sister Sallie (Dan) Cougill and nephew Rick Oliver

Thomas Carrow

Dennis Ray Hansen was born in Smith Center, Kansas on December 1, 1946, to Maurice and Betty (Hughes) Hansen. He passed from this earth on May 11th, 2024, at the age of 77. Dennis had been diagnosed with ALS in October of 2023 and had struggles with this but kept on doing most of the things he enjoyed.

He attended Smith Center grade school and high school graduating in 1964 with cherished memories of his classmates and school days.

He married Kathy (Ayres) Hansen, a Smith Center native on August 12th, 1972, at the Congregational Church. The day of the wedding was so hot the candle melted over. They have lived their entire married life in Smith Center and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022. Their son Seth Nichols was born on June 21st, 1976, and was Dennis’s pride and joy.

Dennis had different jobs during his youth and after. He worked for Harry Lattin at the Home Oil Company on Main Street. He worked for the State of KS Highway Department a couple years prior to joining the Army in 1965 and was posted in the Dominican Republic and West Point in New York state before being discharged in 1967. He drove a truck for Mini Max Provisions. He went to work for Maynard Frank at the John Deere dealership as a mechanic and when Maynard sold, Dennis worked for Milton Ouderkirk at the new dealership (Smith County Implement) as a parts man and sales representative. When Milton passed, Dennis bought Milton’s half of the dealership and later purchased the other half. He was the owner of Phillips County Implement later until he sold both dealerships in 2000. He stayed busy with various part time jobs including driving for Peterson Industries, delivering for the local drug stores, and driving the bus for City Transportation.

He was a lifetime member of the Kingsbury-Chase VFW #1141, Smith Center, where he has been commander for several years, American Legion Post #220, Smith Center, Rotary before it disbanded, Center Township Clerk and enjoyed being a part of Fairview Cemetery work through the board. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, Old Settler’s Day Committee, and Center Cruzers. He became a member of the Employer’s in Support of the National Guard team (ESGR) for 35 years and helped active Guard members get back their jobs, if necessary, when they returned from duty. He was a member of Kansas STARBASE Program from 2004 through 2010 and was Vice-President for four years. Helping any way he could the Military and Veteran’s was extremely important to him. It gave him immense pride to be a part of the VFW Color Guard for Veteran’s services and to lead parades or wherever a Color Guard was needed.

In 2023, Dennis and Kathy were honored to be selected as King and Queen for Old Settler’s Day.

Dennis was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with his brother Rodney and loved the trip and the time they had together.

Dennis loved sports and his love for the Redmen increased two-fold when Seth became a part of the Junior High and Senior High Redmen teams. He helped with Redcaps and very seldom missed a football game, wrestling or track meet. He attended anything Seth was involved with and helped with Post Prom. He tracked Coconino High School in Arizona where nephew Yancy Ayres was an active athlete.

Dennis’s 1969 Plymouth Sport Satellite was the car he had enjoyed the most as when he purchased it, he said, Plymouth’s were what his dad drove most. Spending time at weekend car shows and in July the Salina Lead Sled was a yearly event with Seth, classmates and friends.

He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and had worked on many church programs and events.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Hansen and Maurice Hansen, his in-laws that he loved like parents, Burl and Margaret Ayres, six siblings, Don, Cathy Howton, Jerry Hughes, Mary Marye, David and Karl, brother-in-law, Tom Ayres and other sister and brothers-in-law.

Dennis is survived by wife, Kathy, son Seth, brothers, Wayne (Jane), Rodney (Mary); sisters-in-law, Karen (Ayres) Keatley, Joann Hansen Storer and brother-in-law, Bruce Marye.

Dennis was willing to help in any situation and had many dear and special friends. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Brenda May Glenn was born May 11, 1952 in Holdrege, NE, the daughter of James &amp; Geraldine (Steinke) Hutchens. &nbsp;She passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024 at the Andbe Home in Norton, KS at the age of 71.

On May 31, 1970, Brenda was united in marriage to Eric Glenn while he was enlisted in the USAF &amp; stationed at Scott AFB in Belleville, IL. &nbsp;Their second duty station was Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan. Upon leaving the service in 1973, the couple returned to Norton. &nbsp;

In 1984, opportunities took them to Shawnee, KS for 2 years, LaMars, IA for 7 years &amp; Bella Vista, AR for 22 years where she worked as an executive assistant for the Walmart Pharmacy warehouse division. &nbsp;They retired to Roswell, NM &amp; after 2 years they returned to Norton to be close to family.

Brenda enjoyed scrapbooking &amp; stamping up.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Geraldine Hutchens, her brother-in-law David Poage &amp; her nephew, Chester Poage.

Survivors include her husband Eric of the home; her father, James Hutchens of Norton; her daughter Heather Bensyl of Kentwood, MI; her son Christopher of Norton; sisters, Rebecca Vansickler of Bella Vista, AR &amp; Dottie Poage of Norton &amp; 2 grandchildren, Sophia Bensyl &amp; Parker Wiese.

Zelda Marie Wallgren, 92, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on January 2, 2024 and she was born July 8, 1931 in Naponee, Nebraska to Blanche (Bradley) Bushnell.

Zelda as a child lived in Kansas, Idaho, and Utah, returning to Speed, Kansas at age 10. She attended schools in Speed and Phillipsburg.

She was married to Leonard Wallgren on June 5, 1948, and they were married for 62 years. They lived, worked, and raised their family in Logan, KS until 1980 when they moved to Colorado Springs, CO. Zelda and Leonard retired in 2000, moving to Sun City, AZ.

She is survived by two children, Marla (Kent) Lang of Scottsdale, AZ and Eric Wallgren of Palm Springs, CA, 2 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Zelda enjoyed reading, playing cards, traveling, and being outside visiting with family and friends. She will be remembered as a truly kind and caring person. She will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.

Zelda Marie Wallgren

James Custer “Jim” Gregory, III, 79, passed away May 14, 2024, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born December 6, 1944, to James, Jr., and Carol Lee (Arney) Gregory in Bethany, Missouri.

During his childhood, Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and loved to be around his dad and his airplane. After graduation from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1962, he attended junior college in Kansas City, Kansas, and worked at the Municipal Airport part time in Kansas City, Missouri.

When the Vietnam War escalated, he enlisted in the United States Air Force a week after he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Barbara Gray, in July 1966. After returning stateside from Vietnam, he was stationed in Sacramento, California, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. After his discharge, Jim and Barbara settled in the Kansas City area, where he worked for his father at American Industrial Tool Company.

Jim moved to the Great Bend area in the early 1990’s, where he was part owner with Chuck Carpenter of RWI. He was a founding Charter Member of the Kansas Sidewinders Motorcycle Club, and served on various executive committees, sharing with his loved ones the activities and rides that he would participate in. Jim loved his Harley Davidsons and going to Sturgis every year with members of the club, plus to meet up with his brother, Terry.

 </figure>James Custer “Jim” Gregory, III, 79, passed away May 14, 2024, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born December 6, 1944, to James, Jr., and Carol Lee (Arney) Gregory in Bethany, Missouri.During his childhood, Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and loved to be around his dad and his airplane. After graduation from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1962, he attended junior college in Kansas City, Kansas, and worked at the Municipal Airport part time in Kansas City, Missouri.When the Vietnam War escalated, he enlisted in the United States Air Force a week after he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Barbara Gray, in July 1966. After returning stateside from Vietnam, he was stationed in Sacramento, California, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. After his discharge, Jim and Barbara settled in the Kansas City area, where he worked for his father at American Industrial Tool Company.Jim moved to the Great Bend area in the early 1990’s, where he was part owner with Chuck Carpenter of RWI. He was a founding Charter Member of the Kansas Sidewinders Motorcycle Club, and served on various executive committees, sharing with his loved ones the activities and rides that he would participate in. Linda Lea Rasek, 84, passed away May 12, 2024, at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born on Aprill 22, 1940, in La Junta, Colorado, to Frank and Thelma “Imogene” (Taylor) Rasek.&nbsp;

Uriel Renteria Murillo

Chip Miller passed away on September 6, 2023 in McAlester, Oklahoma at the age of 76.

Chip was born in Goodland, KS on October 1, 1946 to Alexander and Della Mae (Gotchall) Miller. &nbsp; He graduated from Goodland High School in 1964. &nbsp;He attended Vo-Tech and studied auto mechanics. &nbsp;Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. &nbsp; He was very proud of his corps and his country. &nbsp;During his enlistment, he fought in the Vietnam War and received many honors, but it was the Purple Heart that he treasured the most.

After returning home to Goodland, he married Kathryn Ruth Jones. &nbsp;To this union, two children were born, James (Jimmy) and Jodi. &nbsp;Chip enjoyed fishing and hunting, watching Jimmy at wrestling tournaments, and cheering for his favorite football team, The Kansas City Chiefs!

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Kathy, his son Jimmy, his brothers Richard and Ronnie, sister Lavonna (Shorty), and granddaughter ShiAnne.

He is survived by his sister Darlene (Joe) Bauman of Goodland, KS, daughter Jodi (Kevin) Browne of McAlester, OK, granddaughters Keeley, Nikki, Chloe and Piper, grandsons Mario, AJ, Cole and Gage, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 2:00 PM MT at the Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, KS. &nbsp;

Alex "Chip" Miller

Marilyn Fay [Hickert] Otter passed from this earth at the age of 87 on May 13, 2024 at home in New Almelo, KS.

One of twins, she was born on the farm in Decatur County on April 29, 1937 to Albert and Amanda [Gillece] Hickert. She was a farm kid and grew up on the Hickert family farm about 5 miles from where she would later raise a family with Marion Otter. She attended grade-school in New Almelo where she met Marion. She graduated from Jennings High School.

Marilyn was joined in Holy Matrimony with Marion on November 28, 1957 in New Almelo, KS. To this marriage were born Frank, Greg, Steve, Doug and Emily [Otter] Kessler. She and Marion raised their children on the family farm north of New Almelo. She spent a good amount of time chasing after livestock, repair parts and wayward children. She raised chickens, took meals to the fields, and did all the other things that come along with being a farm wife. She ran messages from the house to Marion’s welding shop and maintained a couple acres of yard at the Otter farm as well as working a large vegetable garden and yard at her father’s. She travelled with Marion to Rural Telephone Co conventions and enjoyed sightseeing while he attended meetings. She rode with him on dozer delivery trips to 15 different states. On each trip she completed a quilt block and later compiled them into a quilt. She was an active member of the St Joseph parish community in New Almelo. For several years, Marilyn and Marion were stewards of the St Joseph Cemetery helping with upkeep, plot assignments and arrangements. She was a member of St Ann’s Altar Society and one of the Parish quilting circles. She continued to learn to quilt and practiced her art right up to the end. Over the years, she worked on and/or completed a multitude of quilts. Some were for family. Many baby quilts were donated. The rest were auctioned in benefit of the New Almelo St Joseph parish.

In 1986, Marilyn and Marion moved from the family farm to New Almelo. She could regularly be seen doing yard work, pulling weeds, and mowing on her Grasshopper. She took great pride in her yard and plots of Iris.

Marilyn is survived by siblings Wilma Farrell, Donna Roth and Don Hickert and children Frank [Levonne], Greg [Tammy], Steve, and Emily [Gary] Kessler, nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Albert &amp; Amanda Hickert, siblings Cecilia [Kotschwar], Hilaria [Huff], Iolene [Levendofsky], Jim, Robert, William, Bertilla [Conroy], and Carolyn as well as her husband Marion Otter and son Douglas Otter.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at the St Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10:00 am. Inurnment following in the St. Joseph Cemetery, New Almelo. Visitation 5:00-7:00 pm in the New Almelo Gymnasium on Friday, June 14 with Rosary of our Lord following at 7:00 pm. Bernadine was born on January 31, 1928, in the Hawkeye township, Osborne County, KS, the daughter of Joseph and Stella (Johnson) Martin. &nbsp;On August 15, 1951, she married Lyle Victor Duntz in Sylvia, KS.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, five brothers, Ormal, Kenneth, Leland, Bernard, and Eldon Martin&nbsp;and three sisters, Fleta Collicot, Letha Barret and Marilyn Nichols.

Bernadine is survived by her many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel,&nbsp;113 S. Bernadine Duntz

Matilda (Tillie) Rose Keith was born January 28, 1932 to Leo and Rose Wolf on a farm near Zurich, KS and departed this life on May 13, 2024 in Wichita, KS with her children by her side.

Growing up during the height of the depression, they moved to several farms in Northwest Kansas to provide for the family. Tillie was only able to attend school through the 8th grade, because she needed to help her dad on the farm. However, she was so intelligent that she picked up on things that school cannot teach. When not helping on the farm, she worked for others to help provide money for her family. Her family finally settled on their own farm 8 miles north of Penokee, KS until she met the love of her life.

Tillie met Everette Keith at the Springhill Dance where he swept her off her feet. He would even fly his plane the 15 or so miles to pick her up for a date. They married on April 17, 1949, and to this union had three children: James, Joseph, and Annette.

She was a farm wife in the true sense of the word. She milked cows, raised chickens, planted gardens, canned food, and everything else it took to raise her family, but she still found time to have fun with family, friends, and neighbors. Tillie was involved in planning many gatherings and community functions, and enjoyed interacting with friends. She was a very social person who enjoyed being around others and some of her favorite activities were dancing and playing cards. Hobbies that she enjoyed were cake decorating, quilting, gardening, and traveling. She was always on hand to help others with catering or just lending a hand.

Tillie is survived by her son, Joseph and wife Karen of Penokee, KS, her daughter, Annette and husband, Larry Nickelson of Wichita, KS and daughter-in-law, Geralda Keith of Hill City, KS; ten grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren (and one on the way), and one great great grandchild. She also has one surviving sister, Donna and her husband Joe Scott of Healy, KS as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Everette, her son, James, her parents, a brother, Robert, sisters, Virginia, Eleanor, and Arlene and their spouses.

Tillie will be greatly missed by those whose life she has touched. Her love of family and joy in life are her lasting legacy. She was a care-giver for the majority of her life and an inspiration to all.

Leonard “Lee” Wells, of Stockton, Kansas passed away on May 13, 2024, at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, Kansas, at the age of 76. He was born on March 17, 1948, to Harry and Rosabell (Bures) Leonard in Odell, Nebraska.

Lee grew up in Odell, Nebraska and graduated from Odell High School in 1967.

He moved from Nebraska in the early 1980’s. He was the owner and operator of Lee Wells Tree Service in Hays, Kansas and L&amp;L Liquor in Damar, Kansas. He enjoyed history, classic country music, Nebraska Football and just loved being an (enjoyable) pain to those that knew him.

Lee is survived by his sons, James Wells of Dewitt of Nebraska, Robert (Kerrie) Wells of Beatrice, Nebraska; sister, Ileen (Dallas) Parde of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Diane Wells of Odell, Nebraska; and grandson, Zander Wells of Beatrice, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Leonard and Rosabell Wells; and brother, Pat Wells.

There will be no service. His ashes will be scattered in Gage County, Nebraska.

Leonard “Lee” Wells

Jerome (Jerry) William Goetz was born November 21, 1932, to William and Irma (Gallagher) Goetz on their family farm ten miles north of Park, Kansas. He lived on the farm and attended a country school north of Park until 1947 when he joined Park High School where he met his future wife, Alice Marqueling. The two enjoyed attending local baseball games--where he was a pitcher--and local dances and movies. The two were married on July 29, 1952. They then moved to their own farm four miles north of Park where they shared 71 years together. They began with milk cows, chickens, pigs, and a garden. At the time of his death Jerry had grown his small cattle operation of around ten dairy cattle into a second-generation enterprise of over 3,000 cattle in a feedlot run by his youngest son, Don.

Jerry was well-known in the region for buying cattle, which was his true passion. He could be found weekly at the sale barns in WaKeeney, LaCrosse, Plainville, Norton, Oakley, and Oberlin. His sons Daryl, Dale, and Don took to the business each in their own way. Daryl became a truck driver and started his own cattle hauling business. Dale took to mechanics and raising cattle, eventually starting his own feedlot and farm. Don excelled at the cattle business and worked with his parents every day to grow the feedlot and farm and continues running it to this day.

Jerry was a beloved father to not only his three sons but also his daughter, Connie. Jerry and Alice enjoyed life together on the farm and also liked traveling. They enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Colorado, New Mexico, and Alaska, and also enjoyed visiting the casinos in Dodge City and Topeka. Their family of six ultimately grew to 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Jerry and Alice loved bringing the large family together for Christmas every year and, later in life as the family extended geographically, they met twice a year in Salina to keep the family ties together.

Jerry is remembered for his business acumen but also for his tender moments teaching children and grandchildren about life on the farm.

He is proceeded in death by parents William and Irma and sister Edna Heier. He is survived by beloved wife, Alice, of Park; four children Connie (Doc) Reynolds of Winfield, Daryl (Cheryl) of Park, Dale (Dena) of Park, Don (Doreen) of Park; fifteen grandchildren Kayla (John) Cartlidge of Winfield, Kara (Corey) Young of Winfield, Kellie (Scotty) Gatewood of Winfield; Monica (Daren) Guy of Hays, Melanie Goetz of Colby, Justin (Kayla) Goetz of Park, Michelle (Steve) Bremenkamp of Colby, Christin (Matt) Merwald of Omaha, Mandy Goetz of Otoe, Nebraska, Alan Goetz of Elwood, Amber (Heath) Hutchison of Park, Dallas (Shawna) Goetz of Grainfield, Brandi (Trevor) Lowe of Hoisington, Nathan (Ellie) Goetz of Hays, Lanae (Karter) Gonzales of Lenexa; and 29 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Church, Park on Monday, May 20, 2024, 10:00 a.m. followed by burial at the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter on Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. followed by the vigil at 7:00.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Sacred Heart Church, Park or for masses.

Patricia Jo Lietz

Lowell Earl Burk, 91, was born on April 19, 1933, to Herman and Margaret Burk in Goodland. He was taken to heaven on May 11, 2024, at 11:55 p.m. 

Lowell graduated from Goodland High School in 1951. He went to St. Paul Bible College from 1952 to 1953. After helping his father on the farm for a year, he met Rosalie Rae House at Bible School, and they were married on Oct. 18, 1957.

During this time, he joined the U.S. Army and was a truck mechanic for two years in Colorado Springs. He then spent the next eight years in the National Guard and became a sergeant with an honorable discharge. 

Lowel and Rosalie spent the next 50 years farming in the Sharon Springs and Oakley area. Together, they adopted two sons, Jonathan Earl in 1970 and James Christian in 1973. 

Lowell and Rosalie moved to Hays in 2005. He was a member of the Celebration Community Church and New Life Center Hays and enjoyed traveling, fixing things in his shop, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Linda Belshe, brothers Paul and Larry Burk. 

Lowell is survived by his wife, Rosalie; his sister Virginia Duell; his brother Whit Cameron of Wallace, Kansas; his son Jonathan Burk and wife, Susan Burk, of Ocala, Florida; stepsons Cleavon Crawford of Ocala and Cedric Crawford of New York; his son James and wife, Lisa Burk, and their children, Clay, Micah and Avrianna Burk of Hays, and many more family and friends.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. MT Friday, May 17, at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 E. 11th St., Goodland. Interment following the service at the Goodland Cemetery, North Main.

Lowell Earl Burk

Linda Kay Graves, 75, passed away peacefully May 14, 2024, at Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth, Kan. She was born on September 11, 1948, in Denver, Colo, to Orie and Lois (Eller) Graves.

Linda, a long-time resident of Great Bend, had been an employee of the Department of Corrections, working in Larned, San Antonio, Wichita and most recently at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility in the greenhouse. With a well-rounded career life, she also enjoyed her time as a truck driver in the oilfield and bartending at the Derrick Inn in Ness City. Linda never passed up the opportunity to travel, especially to Mexico, and share time, memories and good food with family and close friends.

Survivors include her children; Travis Herrman (Kim) of McCook, Neb., Kimberly Becker (Dwayne) of Great Bend, and Aubrey Nuss (Todd) of Sterling, Kan.; sister, Mary Jackson of Great Bend; brother, Bill Graves (Carolyn) of Ellsworth; and 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Linda Graves; and brother-in-law, LW “Butch” Jackson.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Kimberly Becker presiding. Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg, Kan. Linda Graves, age 75

Kathleen M. “Kathy” Bruce, 69, died May 13, 2024, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kansas. She was born July 21, 1954, in Zumbrota, Minnesota, the daughter of Robert R. and Lela V. (Zimmerman) Kennedy.

On November 1, 1974, she married Robert W. Bruce, Sr. in Ness City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 2, 2019.

Kathy was a long-time employee of Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse, Kansas, where she worked as a CNA, and she deeply cared for her residents. On her days off she worked cleaning houses and offices. Her organizational skills were also put to use organizing family events and reunions and she cherished the time spent with family and friends.

She is survived by; a son, Bob Bruce, Jr. (Lori) of Hoisington; three daughters, Tina Sisson of Bemidji, Minnesota; Helen Brown of Hemet, California, and Betty Bergman (Ken) of Peck, Idaho; her mother, Lela Kennedy; three brothers, Karyl Kennedy (Trudi), Richard Kennedy, and Tom Kennedy, all of Pine Island, Minnesota; and a sister, Helen Toutges (Rick) of Byron, Minnesota; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, husband, a son, Christopher Bruce, and a daughter, Linda Walker and four brothers.

Per Kathy’s wishes cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held from 11 a.m. – 2p.m., Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, at the American Legion back room, Hoisington, Kansas. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Robert in Pine Island Cemetery, Pine Island, Minnesota at a later date.
