Stephen Wayne Schrepel, 64, died September 20, 2021, at his home in 
Hoisington. He was born June 22, 1957, in Hays, Kansas, the son of 
Leslie Charles and Carol Louise (Kimball) Schrepel.&nbsp; Stephen graduated 
from Ellinwood High School in 1976 and attended Barton Community 
College.

On March 12, 1978, he married Myrna Gwen Curry at the First United 
Methodist Church in Great Bend.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; He then married 
Lynette Radenberg in Hoisington, Kansas and they later divorced.

A longtime Hoisington resident, coming from Medicine Lodge, Stephen 
worked for the Larned State Hospital.&nbsp; He formerly worked for Essex and 
the Clara Barton Hospital. He was a past Boy Scout Leader and a member 
of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He served on the Hoisington City Council 
and as a Hoisington Volunteer Firefighter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, 
and woodworking, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his three children; Chadd Schrepel and wife Erin of
 Gardner, Todd Schrepel and Angela Schrepel, both of Hoisington; a 
sister, Vickie Bahr and husband Bill of Arkansas; two brothers, Terry 
Schrepel and wife Terri of Buellton, California, and Mark Schrepel and 
wife Meleah of Goddard; and two grandchildren, Wyatt and Callie 
Schrepel.

Visitation will be 1 – 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 27, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Ron Bailey presiding.

Donald Ray “Don” Farmer, 53, of Russell, Kansas and formerly of 
Colorado, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at the Pratt 
Regional Medical Center in Pratt, Kansas.

Don was born July 11, 1968, in Cincinnati, Ohio.&nbsp; He was the son of 
Ron, Sr., and Dianne (Vaughn) Farmer.&nbsp; He grew up in Ohio and graduated 
from Mt. Healthy High School in Mt. Healthy, Ohio.

Don served his country in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; He was injured during active duty and was honorably discharged as a Disabled Veteran.

Don was united in marriage to Deon Cochran on May 15, 2005, in 
Divide, Colorado.&nbsp; They made their home in Florissant, Colorado for 
several years then later moved to Victor, Colorado.&nbsp; Most recently they 
lived in Aurora, Colorado before moving to Russell, Kansas in 2020.

Don mainly worked in the Security business.&nbsp; He worked as a Security 
Officer and Casino Manager in the Casinos of Cripple Creek, Colorado. 
Prior to leaving Colorado, Don worked as an armed guard at the Arapahoe 
County Court House.&nbsp; He attended the Olive Branch Church of Russell.&nbsp; 
Don was an outdoors man who enjoyed guns, target shooting, fishing, 
camping, and hiking.&nbsp; His greatest joy was his family.&nbsp; He was a very 
loving and protective husband, father and grandfather.

Don’s surviving family include his wife of 16 years, Deon of Russell,
 Kansas; five children, Evan McCue (Kristine) of Randolph, Vermont, Sean
 McCue (Rachel) of Eldersburg, Maryland, Donnie Farmer, Jr. of Russell, 
Kansas, Sarah Farmer of Hutchinson, Kansas and Justin Farmer of Canon 
City, Colorado; his mother, Dianne Farmer of Sunman, Indiana; brothers, 
Ron Farmer, Jr. of Divide, Colorado and Herb Farmer of Sunman, Indiana; 
and six grandchildren that called grandpa “Bagu”, Leah, Natalie, Ronin, 
Aurora, Joey and Brogen.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his father.

Don’s family selected cremation and a Memorial Service will be held

Donald E. Billinger, 68, Trinidad, Colorado, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

&nbsp;He was born June 1, 1950, to Edmund J. and Marie (Bode) Billinger and raised in Victoria.&nbsp;

He
 married Kathy (Newland) on July 17, 1971. He was a boy scout and was 
able to travel the U.S. with his troop, even visiting the World’s Fair. 
He was an altar boy at St. Fidelis Basilica. He was a U.S. Army reserves
 veteran where he reached the rank of Sergeant.

He
 enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling and bird watching. He 
could fix almost anything and enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He was a 
rock to his family and enjoyed talking and telling stories.

Survivors
 include his wife of 47 ½ years; two sons, Shawn and wife, Jacquie and 
Brad and wife, Connie; a daughter, Tonya; three sisters, Linda and 
husband, Mike, Joyce and husband, Henry and Jeanette and husband, Ernie;
 seven grandchildren, Cheyenne, Colten, Macey, Meah, Brian, Clara, 
Camron and a great-grandson, Jayden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Marie; a sister, Rosemarie; a brother, Leroy; and a brother-in-law, Pappy.

 M. Hall Akins.&nbsp; She was a resident of Sevierville, Tennessee since 1999
 moving from Garden City, Kansas, and was an Urgent Care Receptionist 
and worked in medical records for over 30 years.

On December 16, 1999, she married Gary Willson in Sevierville, Tennessee.&nbsp; He survives.

Wayne Rogers Blount, 89, passed away September 14, 2021, at Parker, Colorado.

He was born February 28, 1932, in Larned; the son of Causby and 
Mildred Saunders Blount. A longtime area resident; he grew up in Larned 
and graduated from Larned High School and the University of Kansas.

He was a member of the Willow Creek Church in Barrington, IL and the 
1950 Larned State Basketball team; was an avid Jayhawk fan, and loved 
spending time with his great grandkids.

On January 30, 1955, he married Jean Kemp in Winfield, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include; a daughter, Lisa (Scott) Spjuth, Parker, 
Colorado; a sister, Jeannine (Mike) Girton, Great Bend; two 
grandchildren, Justin (Stephanie) Blount, Littleton, Colorado and Shelby
 (Jared) Esquivel, Peyton, Colorado; and three great grandchildren; 
Lincoln Spjuth, JJ Meenach, and AubreyKate Meenach.

Bruce Alan Blount, 65, passed away November 27, 2019, in Elk Grove, Illinois.

He was born March 19, 1956, in Laughlin, Texas; the son of Wayne

over 20 years, retiring in 2004.

Bruce Alan Blount

Denny Dick Smith, 82, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2021, at 
3:05 p.m. with his wife Fran Smith at his side. He had been ill since 
late December of 2020 and had been in four hospitals and in Western 
Prairie Health &amp; Rehab Facility in Ulysses since April 9. 
	Denny was born on September 8, 1939, to Darrell and Lela (Davis) Smith 
at Rexford, Kansas. His was the last home birth in that small town. 
	Denny excelled in music, especially singing. He sang in the church in 
Rexford on many occasions, and he majored in Voice with a minor in 
Instrumental at Bethany Lutheran College in Lindsborg, KS. He continued 
singing in the U.S. Navy at Beeville (TX) Naval Base choir and in every 
church the couple attended. 
	 During college in Lindsborg, he married Kay VanDorn in 1958, and their son Brent was born in 1959. They divorced. 
	Denny joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 and was stationed in Beeville for 
the remainder of his service. He was a Control Tower Operator, helping 
to train pilots for the Vietnam War. In Beeville, he met Frances Smith 
from Pflugerville, TX, and they married in 1966. After his honorable 
discharge from the Navy, Denny and Fran moved to Lindsborg, KS, where he
 continued his education, receiving his Bachelor of Music in 1967. The 
couple then moved to Utica, KS, where their son Christopher was born. 
	 Their second son, Alden, was born in 1970. The Smiths then lived in 
Rexford, Quinter and Goodland, KS, Austin, TX, and Sidney NE, before 
Denny and Fran moved to Ulysses, KS, where they have resided for 21 
years. Both taught in Ulysses before retiring in 2003. 
	Denny taught music in Utica, Quinter, and Montezuma before continuing 
his education at FHSU in Guidance Counseling and Administration, 
receiving a Master’s degree in both over the next several summers. He 
later went back to FHSU for certification to teach Special Education 
with behavior disordered students. He was a guidance counselor in Lenora
 and Goodland, KS, and a Special Education teacher in Sidney, NE. He 
ended his career in education in Ulysses as the guidance counselor for 
Kepley Middle School. 
	 Denny was interested in so many things: music, photography, traveling,
 astronomy, and he also was the author of two volumes of personal short 
stories about growing up in Rexford. He also wrote a book containing 
biographical information about all the members of his Davis family, 
which he distributed to his cousins and their children. He was 
contemplating writing more stories before he passed away. 
	He was a member of Lions Club International, belonging to clubs in 
Utica, Lenora, Goodland, Sidney, and Ulysses. He was the District 
Governor of 17-K’s Lions District 4 in 2006, and he served his clubs as 
president and vice president. He was a very devoted and enthusiastic 
Lion who worked on some excellent projects to serve the people wherever 
he lived. His latest club was Ulysses Lions Club. 
	 He is survived by his loving wife Frances L. (Smith) Smith of Ulysses;
 three sons: Brent and partner Lynn, Christopher and partner Jason 
Blackwell, and Alden and wife Phyllis; grandson Kinton Smith and wife 
Sarah and great-grandson Ronan; many cousins and a host of friends and 
former students. 
	A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church (104 
South Maxwell, Ulysses) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, with a 
lunch to follow. Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 will 
present flag and play taps. Family will greet friends from 6:00 until 
8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24, at Garnand Funeral Home (405 W. Grant
 Avenue, Ulysses).

at Rexford, Kansas. His was the last home birth in that small town. 
	Denny excelled in music, especially singing. He sang in the church in 
Rexford on many occasions, and he majored in Voice with a minor in 
Instrumental at Bethany Lutheran College in Lindsborg, KS. He continued 
singing in the U.S. Navy at Beeville (TX) Naval Base choir and in every 
church the couple attended. 
	 During college in Lindsborg, he married Kay VanDorn in 1958, and their son Brent was born in 1959. They divorced. 
	Denny joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 and was stationed in Beeville for 
the remainder of his service. He was a Control Tower Operator, helping 
to train pilots for the Vietnam War. In Beeville, he met Frances Smith 
from Pflugerville, TX, and they married in 1966. After his honorable 
discharge from the Navy, Denny and Fran moved to Lindsborg, KS, where he
 continued his education, receiving his Bachelor of Music in 1967. The 
couple then moved to Utica, KS, where their son Christopher was born. 
	 Their second son, Alden, was born in 1970. The Smiths then lived in 
Rexford, Quinter and Goodland, KS, Austin, TX, and Sidney NE, before 
Denny and Fran moved to Ulysses, KS, where they have resided for 21 
years. Both taught in Ulysses before retiring in 2003. 
	Denny taught music in Utica, Quinter, and Montezuma before continuing 
his education at FHSU in Guidance Counseling and Administration, 
receiving a Master’s degree in both over the next several summers. He 
later went back to FHSU for certification to teach Special Education 
with behavior disordered students. He was a guidance counselor in Lenora
 and Goodland, KS, and a Special Education teacher in Sidney, NE. He 
ended his career in education in Ulysses as the guidance counselor for 
Kepley Middle School. 
	 Denny was interested in so many things: music, photography, traveling,
 astronomy, and he also was the author of two volumes of personal short 
stories about growing up in Rexford. He also wrote a book containing 
biographical information about all the members of his Davis family, 
which he distributed to his cousins and their children. He was 
contemplating writing more stories before he passed away. 
	He was a member of Lions Club International, belonging to clubs in 
Utica, Lenora, Goodland, Sidney, and Ulysses. He was the District 
Governor of 17-K’s Lions District 4 in 2006, and he served his clubs as 
president and vice president. He was a very devoted and enthusiastic 
Lion who worked on some excellent projects to serve the people wherever 
he lived. His latest club was Ulysses Lions Club. 
	 He is survived by his loving wife Frances L. (Smith) Smith of Ulysses;
 three sons: Brent and partner Lynn, Christopher and partner Jason 
Blackwell, and Alden and wife Phyllis; grandson Kinton Smith and wife 
Sarah and great-grandson Ronan; many cousins and a host of friends and 
former students. 
	A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church (104 
South Maxwell, Ulysses) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, with a 
lunch to follow. Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 will 
present flag and play taps. Family will greet friends from 6:00 until

Margaret
 Ann (May) Ketterer was born December 24, 1932 on the family farm in 
Jewell County, Kansas; the daughter of Floyd May and Mary Sweet May. She
 died at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas on September 19, 2021 at the 
age of 88 years.&nbsp;

Margaret
 grew up on the farm, attended rural schools, and graduated from 
Montrose High School in 1950. She married Alfred Shaffer on October 15, 
1954; he died in February, 1988; to this union one daughter was born, 
Alfreda Marie.&nbsp;

She
 married Daniel “Pat” Ketterer on February 9, 1990; he survives of the 
home. Margaret’s life revolved around family and trucking. She was a 
short-order cook at Chris’ Truck Stop; owned Shaffer Trucking with 
Alfred; and went over-the-road trucking with Daniel until she was forced
 to retire due to health issues.&nbsp;

Margaret
 is also survived by her daughter, Alfreda (Burl) Maley; grandchildren 
Matt (Anita) Collins; Jesica Collins; and Jenifer Doyle; Sisters Alice 
Rice, and Mary Sue (Paul Dean) Elsey; stepchildren, Marietta Fiarkoski, 
Jerry (Judy) Shaffer; Patty (Bill) Bristol; Brian (Katie) Ketterer; and 
Kathy (Joey) Prochniewski; and a host of extended family and friends.&nbsp;

Dr. Donald Edwin Seibel, age 89, died Friday, September 3, 2021, at Banner Ocotillo Medical Center in Chandler, Arizona. He was born on August 10, 1932, the son of Edwin Seibel and Ana Gashler Seibel. 
 Don graduated from Ellis High School in 1950 in Ellis, Kansas. He 
attended Fort Hays State University for 2 years, then transferring to 
Kansas State University before getting drafted. He served in the Army 
from 1953 to 1954. He later returned to K State to complete his 
doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1960. On April 25, 1964, he 
married Karen Hester in Perryton, Texas. He was the father of four sons;
 Eric, Scott, Stan and Matthew. Don worked as veterinarian for Dr. 
Phillips in WaKeeney, Kansas for 2 years and after went on to own and 
operate his own Veterinarian Clinic for 40 years. Don was an active 
member in the community belonging to the Liberal Country Club, Liberal 
Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Kansas State Veterinarian 
Association, Kanas Veterinarian Medical Association (KVMA) and the 
American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA). He is survived by: His wife of 57 years, Karen Seibel of Chandler, Arizona Sons; Eric Seibel of Dallas, Texas Scott Seibel and his wife Jo of Chandler, Arizona Stan Seibel and his wife Kerry of Jelm, Wyoming Matthew Seibel of Phoenix, Arizona Five Grandchildren, Nicholas, Brandi, Kyla, Zaden and Logan. Dr. Donald Edwin Seibel

Harold Louis “Louie” O’Connor, 85, of Coffeyville passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born on October 1, 1935, at Parsons, Kansas, to Thomas Joseph and Elizabeth Ann (Jungles) O’Connor. Louie grew up and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Parsons graduating when he was 15 years old. He then attended Our Lady of the Ozarks Preparatory School graduating when he was 18. Louie attended Parsons Junior College for a year before entering the Chemical Engineering school at Kansas State University.

While attending Parsons Junior College he met the love of his life Peggy Porter. Louie completed his classes at Kansas State and they were married on November 17, 1956. Following their marriage they made their home in Webb City, Missouri while Louie completed a Master’s Degree in Chemistry in 1958. After graduating they moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where Louie worked at Callery Chemical Company, in 1959 they moved to Coffeyville when he accepted a position as Chemist at Cooperative Refining (later Farmland Industries, now Coffeyville Resource) in 1980 he was transferred to Midland, Texas to study Gas Contract Law. In 1981 the family moved to Littleton, Colorado where Louie was head of Gas Processes for Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. In 1983 they returned to Coffeyville when Louie was named Chief Chemist at Farmland Refinery, in 1990 he became an Environmental Engineer at Farmland until retiring in May 1996.

Louie and Peggy where active with their children at their church and in the communities they lived. Louie coached all of his children’s teams whether it was baseball, football, basketball and any other sport they were involved in. They were also actively involved in cheering their grandchildren at whatever sport they were involved in.

After retiring Louie and Peggy enjoyed traveling to 23 foreign countries and all 50 states, and went on 7 cruises.

Louie was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church where he was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #991, was Past Grand Knight, served as President of the Parish Council, was a member of the Finance Committee and was a Lector, Usher, and Extraordinary Minister. Louie and Al Liebert worked together and founded the Holy Name Carnival which continues today to benefit Holy Name Catholic School. He also served on the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Board of Directors for 17 years, and was a Hospital Auxiliary member for many years. Louie was a Red Cross Volunteer and a Blood Donor for many years. 

Left to cherish Louie’s memory are his wife, Peggy of the home; his five children, David O’Connor of Houston, Texas, Doug O’Connor and wife, Becky of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Debra Ann Jacobson and husband, Billy of Wilsall, Montana, Deron O’Connor and wife, Sue of Hays, Kansas, and D.J. O’Connor and wife Julie of Plano, Texas; one brother, Thomas O’Connor of Parsons, Kansas; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and another arriving soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Elizabeth O’Connor and his grandparents.

A Rosary Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 22nd at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. Following the Rosary the Family will greet those in attendance and all friends at reception Celebrating Louie’s life at the Holy Name School Gym.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 23, 2021 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father James Schibi officiating. Private Family inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons, Kansas.

Harold Louis 'Louie' O’Connor

Shannon Rose Winderlin, age 24, passed away on Friday, September 17, 
2021, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas in the presence of 
her family. She was born on June 18, 1997, in Garden City, Kansas, the 
daughter of Chris Winderlin and Letha Parsons Winderlin. Shannon was a 
lifelong resident of Scott City, Kansas, and a graduate of Scott 
Community High School.

Shannon brought endless joy with her contagious laugh and smile. 
Despite Shannon’s disability, she found happiness in the simple things 
in life- the joy of seeing a loved one, her favorite movies and TV 
shows, animals, flowers, and countless others. She showed so much love 
without ever saying a word. Shannon was a blessing to those who had the 
privilege to know her, and she impacted numerous lives with her 
ever-shining personality.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include Parents- Chris &amp; Letha Winderlin of Scott City,
 Kansas, Two Sisters, Paige Winderlin of Scott City, Kansas, Kameron

Darrell J. “D.J.” Moore, 84, passed away September 19, 2021, at his 
farm home near Penalosa, Kan. He was born to Otis R. and Gladys M. 
(Boyd) Moore on November 2, 1936, at Kingman, Kan. He grew to manhood on
 the family farm and that is also where he spent the last 30 years of 
his life. He married Patricia Shrauner on July 8, 1962, at Elkhart, Kan.
 They shared 59 years of happy adventures.

He attended the local one room school, graduated from Cunningham High
 School, Pratt Junior College, Southwestern College at Winfield, Kan., 
and earned his Master’s Degree as an Audio-Visual Specialist at the 
University of Connecticut. He was awarded a summer National Foundation 
grant to Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn. after only a few years
 of teaching.

He taught Junior High School science in Hoisington, Kan., for 17 
years before he became the High School Librarian for 10 years. 
Meanwhile, he continued his life-long farming interests in Kingman and 
Reno counties.

He was an active 59 year member of First United Methodist Church of 
Hoisington, Kan., where he an his wife sponsored the church youth group 
for several years at two different times. He served as Finance Chairman,
 Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Nominations as well as various other
 assignments. He was a regular attendee of Penalosa United Methodist 
Church during the farming season.

Survivors include, his wife Patricia Moore of the home; and one son, 
Brett Moore of rural Kingman, Kan. He was preceded in death by infant 
twins, Phillip J. and Peggy K. Moore; his parents; a brother, Otis 
Junior Moore; and a sister, Marcelene Moore. He had a step mother, 
Mildred Moore a few years after his mother’s death who is also deceased.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
September 22, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with

Darrell J. 'D.J.' Moore

Annette Rose Burton, 59, passed away September 18, 2021, at her home 
in Great Bend surrounded by family. She was born on June 7, 1962, at 
Great Bend to Jesus “Jay” Lopez and Helen (Phillips) Lopez. She married 
Kevin Burton on May 7, 1983, in Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Annette was a bookkeeper for Lumpy’s 
Bar &amp; Grill, Damm Body Shop and Estes Trash Service for many years. 
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic 
Church and the Altar Society. Annette enjoyed traveling with her 
friends, playing pitch and giving others a hard time but she especially 
loved to spend time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Kevin Burton of the home; a son, 
Aaron Burton (Taree); a daughter, Keshia Causey (Jason); her mother, 
Helen Schremmer, all of Great Bend; a brother, Nathan Lopez (Carolyn) of
 Sun City West, AZ; and four grandchildren, Corbyn, Harper and Aftynn 
Causey, and Harley Dougherty. She was preceded in death by her father, 
Jay Lopez; her stepfather, Earl Schremmer; and mother and father in law,
 Irvin and Carolina Burton.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 
22, 2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at 4 PM and

Roberta L. Nelson, 62, passed away September 20, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

She was born May 30, 1959, in Farmington, NM, the daughter of William 
and Doris Laverne Westbrooke.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, she was a 
homemaker.

She loved helping run the Snack Shack, playing bingo and potluck 
dinners at the High Rise Apartments in Great Bend and enjoyed doing 
crafts and reading.

Survivors include: mother, Doris Laverne Westbrooke, Farmington, NM; 
daughter, Michelle (Randy) Bethel, Larned; son, Michael Nelson, Larned; 
two brothers, Marion Dale, Harold Everette; sister, Linda Kay; three 
grandchildren, Rochelle Nelson, Nevada, Sheyanna Bethel and Kiara 
Bethel, both of Larned; six great grandchildren, Addison Barnett, Eliza 
Barnett, Chelsea Barnett, Brianna Bethel, Quilliam Bethel, Raven Bethel 
and one on the way and significant other, Michael Raymer, Great Bend.

Roberta L. Nelson

John Roland Bergren, was born October 13, 1926, at Severy, in 
Greenwood County, Kansas. The second son of Muriel Dorothy Johnson and 
Reuben Emmanuel Bergren, he has been called “Jack” all his life.&nbsp; The 
name on his birth certificate was Roland John Bergren and Jack had it 
legally changed to John Roland Bergren after he was an adult.

The family lived in a number of different communities during his 
childhood, moving to Kiowa the summer of 1939.&nbsp; The move to Kiowa was 
made in a truck, with mother and father riding&nbsp; in front and Jack and 
his brothers LaVern and Dwight riding on top of the truck with the 
family’s personal effects.&nbsp; When they came to a hill west of Anthony and
 looked westward, Muriel exclaimed “my goodness this must be the end of 
the world.” The hot August sun was shining and there were mirages and 
waves of heat rising from the road.

Starting high school in Kiowa was a new experience for Jack and his 
brothers, as previous towns where they had lived, were much smaller and 
Kiowa seemed like a big city.&nbsp; Jack was and still is a very reserved and
 shy person and making friends was a little hard.&nbsp; Sports was the love 
of his life and he went out for all sports, getting acquainted that way.

A very enterprising young man, he mowed yards with a push mower (not 
gas powered) for 25 cents a lawn. Saving his hard earned money, he was 
able to pay for his schooling.&nbsp; He also worked for a local grocery store
 candeling eggs and popped corn for the local theater.&nbsp; He also worked 
at various farms helping with plowing etc.

He graduated from Kiowa High school in May of 1944.&nbsp; Soon after 
graduating he went to work for the local ice company.&nbsp; He spent 2 years 
at El Dorado working for an oil refinery, but was bumped from that job 
when the war ended and veterans were given back their former jobs.

At an early age Jack was baptized in the Methodist faith.&nbsp; After his 
marriage to Eva Lavern Robison on March 23, 1951, he was baptized in the
 First Christian Church at Kiowa. That marriage ended in divorce in 
1975.

On May 23, 1981, he was united in marriage to Wilma Darlene Huffman 
Ricke, at the Baptist parsonage in Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; After a 
honeymoon in the Black Hills of South Dakota, they were at home at 211 E
 7th, Hoisington.

On March 5, 1948, he began working for the Western Power and 
Telephone as a service technician until his retirement in 1987 from 
Contel, who had purchased the telephone division.&nbsp; His expertise in 
telephone repair and installation has enabled his to continue that line 
of work, establishing his own company as Bergren Telephone Company. His 
son Kerry assisted.

Always active in sports he was a member of the Kiowa Jewelers 
basketball team, playing forward.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Kiowa 
Baseball town team, playing short stop for many years.&nbsp; As a young man 
right after graduation he was “tapped” to try out for the St. Louis 
Cardinals farm team, but turned the offer down, saying he just didn’t 
want to leave home.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Darlene Bergren of the home; 
three children, Joni Lynette Sterling and husband Steve of Alva, 
Oklahoma, Lori Annette Campbell and husband Kevin of Arkansas City, and 
Kerry John Bergren of Wichita; four stepdaughters, Crista McMillin, 
Teresa Scott and husband Bruce, Kathy Lynch, and Terri Davis and husband
 Brian; three granddaughters, Darbi Lynn Hinde, Kianne Lee Campbell, and
 Kacee Annette Campbell; one grandson, Brandt Steven Sterling; and two 
great grandchildren, Sawyer Sterling Hinde and Lincoln Calvin Hinde; and
 16 step grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with 
family to receive friends from 6 - 8p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Hoisington

John Roland Bergren

Richard John Schleicher passed away on September 16, 2021, in Echo, 
Oregon from a tragic car accident while traveling to a bull riding 
event. He was born on November 5, 1996, to Harold and Debra (Faber) 
Schleicher in Hays, KS. 
 Richard grew up the youngest of five children in Stockton, KS. At 
the young age of 4, Richard got his first taste of excitement he had for
 bull riding while attending his first rodeo with his parents. By age 6,
 he began competing at Little Britches and Junior High Rodeos. He 
graduated from Stockton High School with the Class of 2015 before moving
 to Nevada, MO to attend Missouri Welding Institute. With bull riding 
still in his blood, he got his PRCA card and competed in as many rodeos 
as he could. 
 An inspiration to many of his fellow bull riders and friends, he was
 known not only for his grit and love for the sport; but also his 
contagious laugh, constant smile and personality that lit up a room, his
 sense of humor and sincerity, his crazy dance moves, and beautiful 
singing voice. He was a young man chasing a dream, but as his chaps 
read, “Faith Over Fear”, he truly lived his dream. He also enjoyed 
fishing, hiking, golf, and snowboarding. He loved his family and 
friends, his rodeo community, and would do anything for anyone.
 Although our hearts are weighing heavy during this difficult time, 
for he was taken so suddenly, we can find comfort in knowing that 
Richard is at peace in Heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ. We all have so
 many memories, stories, and have had wonderful times with him. Those 
are the things that we will cherish forever. He will be remembered with 
love. As he would often say, “Can I get a hoo-yaa”?! 
 Richard is survived by his parents, Harold and Debra Schleicher of 
Stockton; grandmother, Shirley Faber of Clare, MI; brothers: Justin 
Schleicher of Houston, TX and Christopher Schleicher and wife Kayla of

Robert A. "Bob" Redger passed away on August 26, 2021, at KU Med Center at the age of 74.&nbsp; He was born July 3, 1947, the son of Albert A. and Grace (Kumberg) Redger.&nbsp; He attended Ashland Kansas schools graduating in 1965.&nbsp; He attended Southwestern College Winfield before enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in Vietnam from 1966-1968 obtaining the rank of SP5 (T). &nbsp; In 1970, he married Carol Jean Fuller and they adopted a daughter, Crystal. Dorothy Jane Nielsen, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, 
September 14, 2021, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, 
Kansas.&nbsp;

Dorothy was born on February 18, 1941, in Russell, Kansas, the 
daughter of Herman and Ella (Wasemiller) Steinert.&nbsp; She grew up in 
Russell, Kansas and graduated from Russell High School and lived in 
Russell most all her life.&nbsp; She was united in marriage (1958) to Gerald 
Nuss and from this union they had 2 children Debbie (Nuss) Overstake and
 Karl Nuss, and 1 granddaughter Shalane (Overstake) Vavasseur.&nbsp; They 
later divorced and Dorothy married Rod Deines in October,1966, and from 
this union they were blessed with 2 children Bonny and Mike.&nbsp; Later Rod 
and Dorothy were divorced.&nbsp; Dorothy found love a 3rd time and
 was united in married to Bill Nielsen in June 1986.&nbsp; 

She worked as a 
homemaker for many years before working as a desk clerk for the Super 8 
Motel in Russell, Kansas, and the Fairfield Inn in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She 
was a former member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she was
 a member of the choir and Methodist Women’s Group.&nbsp; She enjoyed tulips 
and flowers and scrapbooking.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending quality 
time with her family and close friends.

Surviving family include her daughter Bonny Deines and spouse Tim 
Ball of Lawrence, Kansas; son Mike Deines and wife Wendy of Basehor, 
Kansas; daughter Debbie Overstake and spouse Perry; granddaughter 
ShalaneVavasseur and spouse Brad, and Karl Henson.&nbsp; She was preceded in 
death by her parents and husband Bill Nielsen on March 31, 1992.

A gathering service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held in 
October 2021.&nbsp; Cremation has been selected by the family.&nbsp;

Jen Ellen (Leiker) Nash, 69, died Saturday, September 18, 2021. Jen was 
born on June 19, 1952, in Hays, Kansas, to Walter and Irene (Schukman) 
Leiker. She graduated from Marian High School in 1970 and Fort Hays State
 University in 1973. Jen taught high school science in Lebanon, Kansas,&nbsp; and also at Marian High School in Hays, Kansas, before moving to 
Kennewick, Washington and marring Walter V. Nash. They later divorced 
and she returned to Kansas. 
 Her artistic talent was nurtured in Washington. Upon moving to 
Wichita, she worked in custom framing at Hobby Lobby and later as 
department head of crafts and fabric at Wal-Mart until she moved into 
the office. She stayed with Wal-Mart for 27 years and is still fondly 
remembered by many loyal customers and coworkers. 
 She was an accomplished quilter and has wonderful quilting friends 
called The Material Witnesses. They met regularly and supported her 
though her illness. Jen had made amazing gifts and keepsakes for many 
loved ones.
 Jen is survived by her mother, Irene Leiker of Wichita, KS; sister, 
Michelle Wessling Fisher of Aurora, CO; aunt, Wilma (Leiker) Unrein of 
Wichita, KS; goddaughter, Nicole Edwards of Kennewick, WA; niece, 
Mariana (Hector Morales) Sarur of Oklahoma City, OK; step-niece, 
Jennifer (Sam) (Fisher) Vanourey and their son, Ron Vanourey all of St. 
Joseph, MO; step-nephew Matt Fisher of Kansas City, MO; and many 
cousins.
 She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Leiker; 
grandparents, Nicholas Leiker, Katie (Unrein) Leiker-Richmeier and Fred
 Richmeier, and Jacob and Bertha (Kohn) Schukman.
 Jen requested no funeral service be held. A private burial will be held in Hays where she will be buried near her father.

marriage to Gary Rosenbach on January 6, 1973. Throughout their marriage
 they lived in several cities and states before moving to her favorite 
location, the farm near Dannebrog. This is where all of her 
passions truly thrived. She was able to share her love of animals, 
especially horses, with her daughters. She spent countless hours sitting
 through riding lessons, going to horse show, and just watching them 
ride. Susan always believed in giving back and served as the Chairperson
 for the Nebraska State 4-H Horse Exposition for many years. Susan 
loved gardening and could get any plant to thrive. She is well-known for
 her floral quality sunflowers and extraordinary garlic and shallots. 
She was even dubbed the “garlic queen.” Susan brought much of her 
produce into the kitchen where she could turn anything into a gourmet 
meal. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t make. She was an avid 
quilter and you could often find her at her machine working on a new 
pattern. She was extremely precise and never started a project without 
reading all the directions first. Some of her favorite quilts were the 
two she made with her grandson. For the last twenty years, she 
worked at Stuhr Museum teaching classes for the education department. 
She truly loved interacting with and teaching kids about what it was 
like to live in the 1890’s. She often said she was going to retire, only
 to say, “well maybe I’ll teach one more time.” Those left to 
cherish her memory are her husband Gary of Dannebrog; two daughters, 
Jamee (Jeff) Bockerman of Hastings and Allison Rosenbach of Grand 
Island; grandsons Brodyn, Hadyn and Hudsyn Bockerman; sister Jody Zink 
of Pratt, Kansas; and niece Hayley Zink of Turon, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her in-laws.

Marvin M. Herrman, 89, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, 
September 16, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing 
Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Marvin was born July 19, 1932, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of 
Nicholas J. and Veronica (Legleiter) Herrman.&nbsp; He was a lifelong 
resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a 1950 graduate of La Crosse 
High School, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, 
where he was formerly an usher and on the parish council.&nbsp; He was a 
member of Knights of Columbus Council 2970, La Crosse, Kansas, where he 
was a former District Deputy.&nbsp; He was a 4th degree member of 
the Pope Paul VI Assembly, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, both of

Throughout his life, Marvin farmed, and owned Modern Shoe Repair 
Service, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; With his wife, Florence, he owned and 
operated the Corner Grill, which later became Family Castle, La Crosse, 
Kansas.&nbsp; They owned and operated 4 Corners Liquor Store, Rush Center, 
Kansas, and La Crosse Liquor, La Crosse, Kansas, for a combination of 
approximately 20 years.&nbsp; Marvin also worked for Flame Engineering, La 
Crosse, Kansas, for many years.

Marvin enjoyed visiting family and his grandchildren, playing cards, 
fishing, making rosaries, and especially enjoyed watching the Kansas 
City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals games.

On May 18, 1954, he married Florence Oborny at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Florence Herrman, La Crosse, Kansas; 
one son, Michael Herrman, Topeka, Kansas; one daughter in law, Melodie&nbsp; 
Herrman Pruett, Topeka, Kansas;&nbsp; five grandchildren; eight great 
grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and one sister in law, 
Twila Herrman, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Chris, 
Elmer, Alvin, Albert, Alex, Kenneth, and Raymond; and six sisters, Emma 
Moeder, Agnes Herrman, Bertha Sauber, Edith Bollig, Elenora Moeder, and 
Sister Louise Herrman.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 22, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 
8:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with the 
family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.&nbsp; A vigil service 
and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

Church visitation will be Thursday, September 23, 2021, from 9:00 
A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 10:00&nbsp; A.M. 
at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen
 Dabanka officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery,
 La Crosse, Kansas.

Marjorie J. Ochs, 85, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Saturday, 
September 18, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing 
Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Marjorie was born June 21, 1936, in Rush Center, Kansas, the daughter
 of Richard “Dick” and Elva (Cooley) Cunningham.&nbsp; She was a lifelong 
resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1954 graduate of La Crosse High 
School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

On December 19, 1954, she married M. Lee Ochs at the Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death May 19, 2016.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Mark Ochs (Balinda), Great Bend, Kansas;
 one daughter, Debra Lewis (Dean), Salina, Kansas; one sister, Gloria 
Renz, Albert, Kansas, one sister-in-law Lois Cunningham Thompson, and 
numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, 
Rhonda Gass; a son in law, Ronald Gass; an infant brother, Lowell 
Cunningham; one brother Richard Cunningham; one sister, Audrey Gough; 
and two brothers in law, Arlyn Renz; and Kenneth Gough.

Visitation will be Monday, September 27, 2021, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00
