Richard Eugene Clouse

Harold E. Dennett passed away on March 25, 2022, at the Rooks County 
Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 99. He was born to 
John and Pearl (Dirlam) Dennett on May 12, 1922, in Wichita, Kansas. 
Harold was united in marriage to Juanita (Tennyson) Dennett on August 4,
 1943, in Morganfield, Kentucky. The couple was blessed with four 
daughters: Rita, Linda, Denise, and Carol.
 Harold grew up in Wichita, Kansas and attended Wichita North High 
School. He went on to serve the United States Army from 1942 until 1946 
when he was honorably discharged. He was proud of his service in the 
South Pacific during World War II. Harold moved to Palco in 1950 and 
went to work for Conoco Oil Company as a supervisor and retired in 1984.
 Being raised in a home with the influence of music gave Harold a 
passion and many memories that he carried throughout his life from 
Kansas to Arizona. He was a jam session leader for 14 years; and as a 
talented musician, you could always find him tapping his feet, whistling
 a tune, or playing his guitar. He was a member of the Palco Lions club,
 a lifetime member of the VFW, served on the 
 Palco City Council and the board of the United Methodist Church in Palco.
 Harold was a kind and loving man. He didn’t know a stranger and was 
always looking to have a good conversation with anyone. For Harold, life
 was one grand, sweet song that has never ended. His love, his 
encouragement, and his music has given each of us faith to our souls, 
peace to our lives, and joy for generations to come. He will be greatly 
missed, but his memory will serve as an inspiration to those who knew 
him… always do what you love, and always love what you do.
 He is survived by his children, Rita (Ivan) Clark of Morrison, CO, 
Linda (David) Richards of Lawrence, KS, Denise Dennett (Terry 
Strausborger) of Hays, KS, and Carol (Rick) Himbury of Midland, TX; 
seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
 Harold is preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Dennett; 
and siblings, Maude, Cecil, Bill, Leo, Mildred, Marjorie, Orland, 
Marion, Wanda, and Roscoe.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 10:30 
AM at the Palco United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Monday at
 Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Plainville from 2PM until 8PM with 
Family Receiving Friends from 5PM until 7PM.

Harold E. Dennett

Kathleen D. (Brown) Frusher, 73, passed away March 25, 2022, at Hays 
Medical Center from a stroke after a tough battle with acute 
lymphoblastic leukemia.

She was born February 12, 1949, in Oklahoma City to Thomas W. and Roberta (Hammond) Brown of Hastings, Oklahoma.

Kathy graduated from Temple High School in Temple, Oklahoma and 
earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma State University.&nbsp;
 She moved to Hanston, Kansas to teach school in 1976.&nbsp; There she met 
Larry R. Frusher and they were united in marriage on July 15, 1978 in 
Cashion, Oklahoma.&nbsp; They made their home for 43 years in northern 
Hodgeman County on the Frusher family farm homestead.

After starting their family, Kathy stayed home to be a homemaker and a
 bookkeeper for the farming operation.&nbsp; She was a member of Hodgeman 
Community Church and then Faith Fellowship Church and volunteered her 
time teaching Sunday school, children’s church, and Awana Club year 
after year.&nbsp; Nothing was more important to her than her relationship 
with Christ and teaching local children about Jesus.

She was also a member of a family consumer sciences club, FCE Sunny 
Sunflowers for many decades and enjoyed being a 4-H leader during her 
child rearing years.

Genealogy was one of her greatest passions and she was a member of 
the Kansas Genealogical Society and volunteered at their library weekly 
as well as producing their monthly newsletter.

Survivors include: two sons, Joey (Lacey) Frusher, Jetmore, Ben 
Frusher (Rosa Linda) Honduras: one daughter, Bobbi (T.J.) Orton, 
Lorimor, IA; two brothers, Tom L. (Jo) Brown, Cashion, OK, Bob Brown, 
Temple, OK, and three grandchildren, Isla Jo Frusher, Beau Ballard 
Frusher, and Samantha Grace Orton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry R. Frusher and a granddaughter, Katlyn Marie Orton.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 
Faith Fellowship Church, Hanston with Pastor Doug Ellison presiding. 
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with family present from
 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore.&nbsp; Burial will be in 
the Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

 Great Bend in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on October 8, 2011, in

Known for being funny and energetic, Angel was also kind and loved to
 volunteer. He often shared of time he spent with his family, whom he 
was extremely proud to be a part of.

Survivors include, his father, Fernando Lopez; his mother, Martha 
Ramírez; three sisters, Maribel, Elizabeth, and Iridian Ramírez; one 
brother, Fernando Ramirez; and many other family members.

A Vigil with rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at
 Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., 
Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with

Robert Anthony 'Bob' Huelsman

George
 D. Miles Jr., 83, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on
 March 23, 2022. He was born to George and Mildred Maltby Miles on June 
26, 1938, in Jacksonville, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife Beth, and parents George and Mildred Miles. 
 He is survived by son Scott Miles and wife Sheri of Huntsville, Texas; 
granddaughters Kathryn Altom and husband Marshall, of Huntsville, Texas;
 Emily Eberle and husband Matt, of Hays, Kansas; stepsons Rusty Cosby 
and wife Michelle of Kerrville, Texas; and Randy Cosby of Crockett, 
Texas; great-grandchildren, Walker Altom, of Huntsville, Texas; and 
Londyn, Greyson, and Owen Eberle of Hays, Kansas; sister Louann Miles of
 Houston, Texas; and niece Jordan (J.R.) Carson. In addition, he is 
survived by many other family members and friends who loved him. 
 George graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1961 with a 
Bachelor of Science in Journalism. He then attended Southwestern 
Graduate Banking School at Southern Methodist University. The majority 
of his career was spent in the banking industry, retiring as executive 
vice president for First National Bank of Huntsville after 22 years 
before returning to serve as marketing coordinator on a part-time basis.
 He served as president of the SHSU Alumni Association in 2006 and 
was directly involved in the origination of the Alumni Garden, the 
designation of the "Presidents Tree," the completion of the Bell Tower, 
the restoration of the Old Main pipe organ and its installation in the 
Peabody Library, and the initial establishment of regional alumni clubs 
that led to greater participation in the association. He also initiated 
an alumni committee that organized the successful movement to prevent 
any possible name change for SHSU. George's work within the 
university and Huntsville communities was vast. He received the 
Huntsville Citizen of the Year Award in 2007 and February 21, 2008 was 
proclaimed George Miles Day in the City of Huntsville. He also received 
the SHSU Alumni Association Service Award in 2008, the Edwin G. Sandhop 
Spirit of Huntsville Award in 2013, the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber
 of Commerce Mance Park Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and was named
 a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow in 2014. In 2018, he was 
named to the Wall of Honor in the SHSU College of Humanities and Social 
Sciences. In addition to serving as chair of the board for the 
Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce, Miles also served as 
founding chair of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Advisory
 Board, as a member of SHSU's President's Circle, the Executive 
Leadership Council, Sam Houston Memorial Museum Board and the Mass 
Communication Advisory Board. Miles' love for SHSU knew no 
bounds as he was always seen wearing orange and even named his cocker 
spaniel, Sammy. His favorite hobby was volunteering for the community. 
 His funeral service will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 2 p.m. at 
Huntsville Church of Christ, 3737 Hwy 30 West, Huntsville, Texas. 
Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service at 1 p.m. 
George will be laid to rest at Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville. In 
lieu of flowers, please make donations in George's memory to the Sam 
Houston State University Alumni Association, or the charity of your

Robert “Bob” Edward Beiker passed away on March 23, 2022, at Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 61. He was born on October
 23, 1960, in Plainville, Kansas, to Joseph and Elvera (Holzhauer) 
Beiker. Bob was united in marriage to Stacey (Denney) Beiker on October 
3, 1981, in Plainville, Kansas. The couple was blessed with two sons: 
Josh and BJ.
 Bob was a lifelong resident of Plainville. He graduated from 
Plainville High School with the class of 1979 and attended Salina Area 
Vocational Technical School for two years before working a short stent 
in Russell for Lauries Heating then spent some time at Murfin Drilling 
and Lightening Well Service. He moved back to his hometown in the early 
2000’s and started his own business, Double B Tank Service, which he 
owned and operated until his passing. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, hunting,
 working cattle, and was known for being a little loud and even a little
 ornery. 
 Bob was a hardworking and caring man. While he strived for 
perfection in all that he did, he knew how to have fun and enjoy life 
along the way. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will serve as 
an inspiration to those who knew him… always do what you love, and 
always love what you do.
 He is survived by his mother, Elvera Beiker of Plainville, KS; wife,
 Stacey Beiker of Plainville, KS; sons, Josh (Christa) Beiker of Hays, 
KS and BJ (Megan) Beiker of Hays, KS; siblings, Sue Beiker of Aurora, 
CO, Chris (Bob) Sauber of Salina, KS, Ken (Michelle) Beiker of Wichita, 
KS, Gene (Julia) Beiker of Rossville, KS; and two grandchildren, Taryn 
and Avryn Beiker.
 Bob is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Beiker; and siblings, Tom Beiker, Doug Beiker and Steve Beiker.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022,
 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be 
held on Wednesday at the funeral home from 2PM until 8PM with a Vigil

 23, 1960, in Plainville, Kansas, to Joseph and Elvera (Holzhauer) 
Beiker. Bob was united in marriage to Stacey (Denney) Beiker on October 
3, 1981, in Plainville, Kansas. The couple was blessed with two sons: 
Josh and BJ.
 Bob was a lifelong resident of Plainville. He graduated from 
Plainville High School with the class of 1979 and attended Salina Area 
Vocational Technical School for two years before working a short stent 
in Russell for Lauries Heating then spent some time at Murfin Drilling 
and Lightening Well Service. He moved back to his hometown in the early 
2000’s and started his own business, Double B Tank Service, which he 
owned and operated until his passing. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, hunting,
 working cattle, and was known for being a little loud and even a little
 ornery. 
 Bob was a hardworking and caring man. While he strived for 
perfection in all that he did, he knew how to have fun and enjoy life 
along the way. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will serve as 
an inspiration to those who knew him… always do what you love, and 
always love what you do.
 He is survived by his mother, Elvera Beiker of Plainville, KS; wife,
 Stacey Beiker of Plainville, KS; sons, Josh (Christa) Beiker of Hays, 
KS and BJ (Megan) Beiker of Hays, KS; siblings, Sue Beiker of Aurora, 
CO, Chris (Bob) Sauber of Salina, KS, Ken (Michelle) Beiker of Wichita, 
KS, Gene (Julia) Beiker of Rossville, KS; and two grandchildren, Taryn 
and Avryn Beiker.
 Bob is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Beiker; and siblings, Tom Beiker, Doug Beiker and Steve Beiker.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022,
 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be 
held on Wednesday at the funeral home from 2PM until 8PM with a Vigil 
Service and Rosary starting at 7PM.

Robert 'Bob' Edward Beiker

Virgil A. Bowman passed away on February 20, 2022, 
at the age of 95 years, 9 months and 3 days, at Dignity Care Home in 
Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born May 17, 1926, in Ellis, Kansas, to John and 
Elizabeth Bowman. He spent his early years in Ellis and Salina attending
 school and, according to the stories, having lots of fun. He was 
drafted into the Army during WWII and served from 1944 to 1946 in 
Europe.&nbsp; He was in the 102nd Infantry Division Company A.

After his honorable discharge, he married Dorothy Sprague of Vesper, 
Kansas, on September 27, 1947. They were married almost sixty years. 
They were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Salina. The family
 they started consisted of sons Steve (Cyndi) of Hutchinson, Rodney 
(Peggy) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Joe (Barbara) of Marquette, and 
daughter Glenda (Dave) Rittel of Wichita. There are eleven grandchildren
 and eighteen great-grandchildren (with number nineteen and twenty on 
the way).

Virgil worked for Helbert Distributors, S &amp; H Distributors Coors,
 and Crown Distributors Coors in Salina for twenty-five years. He was a 
delivery driver, office manager, and in charge of advertising and draft 
accounts.

A true family man, Virgil enjoyed taking everyone camping, fishing, 
hunting, and bowling. He loved dancing with Dorothy on Friday nights and
 playing cards with friends.&nbsp; They often took the family on Sunday 
afternoon visits with their extended families.

After retirement, Virgil added an almost-daily visit to McDonald’s 
for coffee with friends and neighbors along with weekly golf games with 
the regular foursome. He continued to be devoted to his wife through her
 illness, until her death in 2007.

Left to remember Virgil are his sister, MaryAnn Norris, his children,
 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and 
friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 2:00 
p.m., at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. Military honors will follow at the 
Sunset Park War Memorial in Salina.

Memorials may be made to Dignity Care Home, Kansas Honor Flight, or Kindred Hospice.

Vivian Lucille Collamore, 92, died March 24, 2022, at Scott County 
Hospital in Scott City. She was born Aug. 17, 1929, to Floyd and Hazel 
McKelvey Woodside in Cozad, Nebraska. Vivian was a resident of Scott 
City, Kansas since 1949 moving from Cozad, Nebraska.

She married Vernon Collamore on Dec. 25, 1947, in Cozad, Nebr. He died on Jan. 6, 1997, in Scott City.

Vivian worked for the USD 466 school district in food services for 16 years.&nbsp; She is a member of the Community Christian Church.

Survivors include her children, Vicky White of Knoxville, Tennessee, 
Vincent &amp; Aleece Collamore of Waxahachie, Texas, Velinda Mills, 
Amarillo, Texas, Vance &amp; Lisa Collamore of Scott City; Nine 
grandchildren; Fifteen great-grandchildren; Six 
great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, 
Virginia, grandson, John William White; son-in-law, Myron Mills and 
great-grandson Matthew White.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 
the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Pastor Scott 
Wagner and Ron Hess presiding.

Interment will be at Scott City Cemetery, Scott City.

Vivian Lucille Collamore

Merle Gene Hawks was born on May 19, 1926, in rural Logan, Phillips 
County, Kansas, the son of John Rollo and Ethel Rhoades Hawks. His 
mother died when he was three and he was later raised by his stepmother,
 Mabel Drommer Hawks, who loved him as her own son, and his father, 
John. He departed this life on March 25, 2022, at the age of 95 years 9
 months 24 days at the Andbe Home, Norton, Norton County, Kansas.
 He attended country schools until graduating eighth grade and then 
Almena High School graduating with the class of 1944. He immediately 
joined the United States Navy upon graduation, serving in the Pacific 
Theatre during World War II. His ship, the U.S.S. Rankin, was deployed 
on the way for the invasion of Japan when the Atomic Bombs dropped on 
Japan and forced the Japanese to surrender saving hundreds of thousands 
of lives. He was trained to drive a landing craft. After serving in 
Occupied Japan for the rest of his service, he returned to Almena to 
begin farming. 
 He married the love of his life, Ivalee Mae Roeder, on her birthday,
 May 16, 1947, in Woodruff, Phillips County, Kansas. The plans for 
their wedding had to be abruptly changed due to the inclement weather 
and therefore took place in the pastor’s home. They made their home on a
 farm west of Almena. To their union, four sons were born, whom they 
cherished with their whole hearts: Jerry Lynn, David Gene, John William
 and Michael Lee. In 1958, they bought a farm north of Almena and lived
 there for 24 years. Sadly, two sons predeceased them in death as 
teenagers, David Gene in a tractor accident and John William of spinal 
meningitis. They moved to into Almena in 1982.
 In addition to farming and raising livestock, Merle was employed in 
construction, working for Purtzer &amp; Dutton to supplement the family 
income. He then was hired as a substitute Rural Mail Carrier, which 
eventually became his full-time job until he retired. He also owned and
 operated the Hawks’ Depot as a 50-year distributor of Archer Oil, among
 other products. He also was employed by the ASCS.
 He enjoyed trying new things, raising chinchillas for a time, as 
well as beefalo when it first hit the market. He owned one of the first
 home video cameras, making films of his boys as well as family events. 
 He liked to play cards, belonging with Ivalee, to pitch, pinochle and 
bridge clubs; then later playing whatever card game was popular. He 
played the family marble game (Aggravation) as long as he could. He 
spent precious time fishing with his sons and others. His favorite 
hobby, by far, however, was bowling, at which he excelled. He bowled in
 three leagues well into his 80s, also serving as bowling secretary, 
until the Rainbow Bowling Alley in Norton closed. He delighted in 
attending the activities of his children, grandchildren and great 
grandchildren even in his 90s. He was a faithful Northern Valley 
supporter.
 Merle attended the Almena Congregational Church, having returned 
there after the closing of the Almena United Methodist Church. He 
served on the Almena Schools School Board during the consolidation 
period; he belonged to many civic organizations and wrote for the 
Prairie Dog Press. He was a longtime member of the American Legion. He
 volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels when it was available in Almena.
 He sold tickets at Northern Valley football games as long as he could. Survivors include: two sons and their wives, Jerry and Kay Hawks, 
Norton, and Michael and Deanna Hawks, Almena; five grandchildren: John 
(Gretchen) Hawks, Verona, WI, Jeremy (Renee) Hawks, Norton, Kansas, 
Hannah (Brian) Sproul, Melissa Hawks, Hays, and Morgan Hawks, Almena; 
nine great-grandchildren: Sophie, Lucy, Sadie and Goodwin Hawks, 
Verona, WI; Christien and Dylan Hawks, Norton, KS, Cambrie, Ivey and 
Kole Sproul, Almena, KS; two sisters, Georgie Rorabaugh, Norton, and 
Dixie Hejny and her husband George, Great Bend; sisters-in-law: Neva 
(Roeder) Lee, Belleville, KS, Jo Roeder, Canby, OR; Joy Roeder, 
Garibaldi, OR, and brother-in-law Robert Lyle Bailey, Pueblo, Colorado.

Daniel Pfannenstiel, 62, Hays, died Monday, March 21, 2022, at his home.

He was born January 18, 1960, in Great 
Bend, the son of Nicholas F. “Nick” and Blanche (Pfannenstiel) 
Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Thomas More Prep High School in the 
class of 1978.&nbsp; In November of 1980, he was united in marriage to Mary 
Feldt in Hays.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; Daniel worked as a custodian and 
at various restaurants throughout Hays.&nbsp; As an avid sports fan, Daniel 
enjoyed watching his grandson’s ball games, attending Hays Larks, Fort 
Hays State University, and TMP-M High School games, and was a KU 
Jayhawks and KC Chiefs fan.

Survivors include his two sons: Adam 
Pfannenstiel and wife Sarah of Eagle, CO and Tyler Pfannenstiel and wife
 Megan of Hays, a daughter: Julie Quakenbush and husband Daniel of 
Gorham, a sister: Marlene Arnhold and husband Rick of Hays, five 
grandchildren: Elizabeth, David, and Catherine Quakenbush, Nicholas and

Kathryn Kay Wulf, 70, of WaKeeney, Kansas passed away on March 20,

After Kathy graduated from Trego Community High School in 1969, she 
attended Kansas State University majoring in Education.&nbsp; She later 
received her master’s degree in library science from Emporia State 
University.&nbsp; Kathy taught at several schools with 30 years at Ell-Saline
 High School in Brookville, KS.&nbsp; She retired from teaching in 2008.&nbsp; 
Kathy returned to WaKeeney and started working at the Western Kansas 
World in 2009 and was still working at the time of her death.

Survivors include her sister, Shirley Mai, of WaKeeney, KS, nephews 
Wesley (Tami) Daubert of Peyton, CO, Kenny (Renee) Neff, WaKeeney, KS, 
niece Shelley (Ted) Berning, Colwich, KS, eight great-nieces and 
nephews, 8 great-great nieces and nephews along with many cousins and 
friends.&nbsp;&nbsp; She is predeceased in death, by her father and mother, 
brothers, Larry Daubert and Wesley Dean Daubert, and niece Deborah 
Spratlen.

Graveside services will be held on April 2, 2022, at 11:00 at the WaKeeney City Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kathryn Kay Wulf

Stanley Willis Jantz, 80, died March 22, 2022, at his home in 
Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born September 1941, in Newton, Kansas, the son of 
Charles and Lila (Hays) Jantz. Stanley graduated from Newton High School
 in 1959. He married Lana Sue Brooks on May 26, 1963 in Scott City, 
Kansas. They later divorced.

A long-time resident of Hoisington, Stan worked as a Hoisington 
Police Department officer, an EMT, and an employee of the sanitation 
department. Stan was passionate about his hobbies of cooking and 
photography. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Stan was a member of the Great Bend Church of the Nazarene, the Lions
 Club, the American Legion Argonne Post #180, the Christian 
Motorcyclists Association, and the Prairie Minutemen Chapter of the Sons
 of the American Revolution where he served as vice-president and helped
 establish the Daughters of the American Revolution in Ellsworth.

Survivors include four children; Carrie (Bruce) Bitter of Hoisington,
 Sheldon (Pam) Jantz of Colorado Springs, CO, Ashton (Jill) Jantz of 
Newton, and Nikki Noah (Shawn Finger) of Hoisington; six grandchildren, 
Danielle (Jeff) Black, Bradon Bitter (fiance,Taylor Nett), Kayleigh 
Bitter, Kyla Jantz, Erik Jantz, Desmond Noah, and Brinttain Noah 
(fiance, Kahlie Miller); one great-grandson; two sisters, Cynthia 
Hoskins and Jerri Mitchell, both of Wellington, Kansas; two brothers, 
Pete Jantz of Wellington, Kansas, and Dan Jantz of Craig, CO; nine 
nieces and nine nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Charlotte Shaffer.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. The 
memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022, at
 Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Josh Foster and Don 
Fisher presiding. The family will greet guests prior to the service at 
10:00 a.m. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Stanley Willis Jantz

Darryl E. Smika passed away March 17, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Darryl was born July 1, 1933, near Hill
 City; the son of Fred and Verna (Tuttle) Smika. Darryl lived in Hays 
for the last 20 years prior to that he made his home in Colorado, 
Nebraska, and North Dakota.

Darryl graduated from Scott City High 
School and attended Kansas State University graduating in 1956 with a 
B.S. degree in general agriculture and his M.S. degree in soil 
fertility. In 1969 he received a Ph. D with a major in soil chemistry 
and a minor in plant physiology from Kansas State University.

Darryl was a Research Leader for the 
U.S. Department of Agriculture, and served at several Agricultural 
Service Stations in North Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado. He retired on 
July 1, 1988, after 32 ½ years of service.

Dr. Smika’s research was conducted on 
soil water-soil nutrient relations for native and introduced grass 
production. He also conducted research on dryland soil and water 
conservation and conservation cropping systems and pioneered research on
 reduced and no-tillage fallow practices for the Central Great Plains.

Dr. Smika published over 200 articles 
reporting on his research results. The articles were published in 
professional journals, experiment station bulletins, government 
bulletins, progress reports, abstracts, newsletters, and book chapters. 
He made presentations at various national and international meetings and
 at regional workshops and local and area action agency sponsored 
meetings through-out the Great Plans.

Darryl married Darlene Faye Wilson on 
August 16, 1956, at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, Ash Valley Kansas. 
They were married for 26 years and raised four children before 
divorcing. On December 19, 1987, Darryl married Jennifer Leaf in Fort 
Collins, Colorado. Jennifer preceded him death in January 2003.

Upon his retirement he became 
self-employed establishing Great Plans Conservation Tillage consultant 
services. He worked alongside his Father before he passed on the family 
farm in Graham County Kansas and spoke at conventions overseas on his 
research.&nbsp; He enjoyed restoring John Deer equipment, and other farm 
implements. He enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and former 
employees and co-workers. He was a member of the United Methodist Church
 of Hays and involved in the Stephen’s Ministry.

Darryl was preceded in death by his 
parents, a sister, Marjorie Fick, and grandson Tony. He is survived by 
his daughter Rejeana and her husband Wendell Greene; daughter Lavona 
Wolfersperger; daughter Tava and her husband Rob Owens, stepson Justin 
Leaf; granddaughter Mandy (Mandeline) and her husband Shawn Pedigo; 
grandsons Nikolas Wolfersperger and his wife Crystal and Michael 
Wolfersperger. Also, two nephews, their families and several cousins and
 friends.&nbsp; Along with 2 nephews and their families and cousins.

Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine in Hays, Kansas.

Bobby Lee&nbsp;“B.L.”&nbsp;Schulz, 97, of Russell, Kansas, passed away&nbsp;Friday,&nbsp;February&nbsp;4, 2022 at the Brookdale Senior Living in Hays, Kansas.

B.L. was born July 29, 1924, in Greensburg, Kansas. &nbsp;The&nbsp;son of Robert Emmet&nbsp;and Fanny Maude(Hunsley)&nbsp;Schulz. &nbsp;He grew up in Greensburg and graduated from Greensburg High School,&nbsp;where he lettered in all sports and music. &nbsp;He then attended&nbsp;the University of&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;to play&nbsp;basketball&nbsp;for one yearbefore joining the&nbsp;U.&nbsp;S. Army. &nbsp;During World War&nbsp;II, he was stationed in Europe with the Grave Registration unit. &nbsp;He&nbsp;graduated from&nbsp;Washington&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;Jefferson&nbsp;College&nbsp;while still in the&nbsp;Army. &nbsp;After&nbsp;beingdischarged,&nbsp;he attended the University of Kansas City Dental School and graduated&nbsp;a&nbsp;Doctor of Dental Surgery.&nbsp;

B.L. was united in marriage to Lorraine&nbsp;“Larri”&nbsp;Lewis on April 8, 1951, at his parent’s home in Greensburg. &nbsp;This union was blessed with four children; Don, Diane, Dean,&nbsp;and Dana. &nbsp;They made their home in Russell, Kansas,&nbsp;where he&nbsp;practiced&nbsp;dentistry for over forty years. &nbsp;He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Russell,&nbsp;a life&nbsp;member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, the Russell American Legion Post #99, 75-year member of the Russell Masonic Lodge&nbsp;#177,&nbsp;Isis Shrine, Russell Elks Lodge,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Russell Kiwanis&nbsp;Club. &nbsp;He&nbsp;also&nbsp;was&nbsp;active in the&nbsp;Arbor Day&nbsp;Foundation. &nbsp;He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, snow skiing, and singing in his leisure time.

B.L.’s&nbsp;surviving family includes&nbsp;his&nbsp;daughter, Diane Schulz of Washington, D.C.; two sons, R.Dean Schulz (Sue) of Hays, Kansas and Dana Schulz (Barbara) of Cody,&nbsp;Wyoming; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

B.L. was preceded in death by his parents,&nbsp;loving&nbsp;wife Lorraine on March 13,&nbsp;2014; son Don Schulz;&nbsp;three brothers, Vern Dean Schulz,&nbsp;Billy Gene Schulz,&nbsp;and an infant brother.

Sandra Smith, age 79, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at the
 Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on March 
23, 1943, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Harold &amp; Evelyn 
Morgan Barker.&nbsp; A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1974 moving from 
Garden City, Kansas, she was a homemaker and house cleaner.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On July 20, 1962, she married James Richard “Dick” Smith in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Survivors include her Husband - Dick Smith of Scott City, Kansas, One
 Daughter - Tish &amp; Bryan Burnett of Scott City, Kansas, One Son - 
Tony &amp; Dominique Gray of Mauriceville, Texas, Three Sisters - Ginger
 Toben of Marquette, Kansas, Dorothy Huff of Branson, Missouri, Brenda 
Barker of Greeley, Colorado, Five Grandchildren - Devyn Jones of Buhler,

Sandra Smith

Louis R. Beil, 81, passed away March 22, 2022 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City, KS.

He was born October 7, 1940 in Redding, CA, the son of Louis A. and 
Imogene Evans Beil.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, he was a supervisor at 
Crustbuster for 42 years and was a lifelong farmer/rancher.

He was a member of Chester Hawkins American Legion Post #290, 
Jetmore, Masonic Lodge, Dodge City and he served in the United States 
Army. He loved all sports, but especially the Wildcats, Chiefs, Dodgers 
and the Lakers.

On August 16, 1966, he married Veldivia June Lauppe in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Brian (Robin) Beil, Jetmore, Dale 
(Shirley) Vincent, Emporia, KS,; daughter, Robin (Erik) Beil Herrera, 
Poulsbo, WA; two sisters, Mary (Carl) Conley and Joan (Horst) Hillman, 
both of Clearwater, KS; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren 
and his precious dog, Sadie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Beil; sister, Vinita Beil and a grandson, Brenton Lynn Beil.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2022 at United 
Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, with Rev. Mark Durham presiding.&nbsp;

 </figure>Louis R. Beil, 81, passed away March 22, 2022 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City, KS.He was born October 7, 1940 in Redding, CA, the son of Louis A. and 
Imogene Evans Beil.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, he was a supervisor at 
Crustbuster for 42 years and was a lifelong farmer/rancher.He was a member of Chester Hawkins American Legion Post #290, 
Jetmore, Masonic Lodge, Dodge City and he served in the United States 
Army. He loved all sports, but especially the Wildcats, Chiefs, Dodgers 
and the Lakers.On August 16, 1966, he married Veldivia June Lauppe in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; She survives.Other survivors include: two sons, Brian (Robin) Beil, Jetmore, Dale 
(Shirley) Vincent, Emporia, KS,; daughter, Robin (Erik) Beil Herrera, 
Poulsbo, WA; two sisters, Mary (Carl) Conley and Joan (Horst) Hillman, 
both of Clearwater, KS; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren

Louis R. Beil

James Robert Nichols, son of Robert (Bob) and Peggy Nichols was born 
April 5, 1951, in Beloit, Kansas, and went to be with the Lord on March 
23, 2022, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, at the age of 
70. 
 Jim graduated from Alton High School with the class of 1969. After 
high school Jim attended Colby Community College, and Fort Hays State 
University, then returned to Alton to farm. He farmed for many years, 
with his father-in-law Harold Carswell, and later in life with his son 
Brock. 
 On June 8, 1975, Jim married Carol Carswell in Alton, Kansas at the 
Alton United Methodist Church. In August 1978, Jim and Carol welcomed a 
son, Ryan James, to their family. In June 1981, their second son, Brock 
Harold, joined the family. Over the years, the family grew to include 
two daughters-in-law, and nine grandchildren. Jim loved his wife, his 
sons, and their families dearly and held his years with his grandkids 
close to his heart. While Jim was a strong and occasionally stern 
father, as a grandpa he softened into a playful and loveable, some may 
even say he was a ‘mainly mild-mannered man’. 
 Jim spent his life as a farmer and rancher, while Carol taught 
school, and together they built a life and a family he was very proud 
of. On the farm, Jim loved crop farming, while Harold and later his 
sons’ passion of raising Hereford cattle rubbed off on him. He was 
active in the agricultural community, volunteering his time to various 
organizations like the Farm Service Agency, Kansas Livestock 
Association, Kansas Hereford Association and American Hereford 
Association. Even in retirement, Jim continued his lifelong commitment 
to agriculture by mentoring younger farmers and helping with harvest 
each fall. 
 In addition to serving the agricultural community, Jim also served 
the community of Alton and his church community. Jim was a familiar 
staple in the Bull City Opry at the Alton Jubilee, where he always 
played the role of comic relief. He was a member and trustee of the 
Alton United Method Church. 
 Jim truly enjoyed life in so many ways. In his free time, he loved 
to travel and had been to 47 states. He had a kind heart and often could
 be found making new acquaintances and turning them into friends on his 
travels. He loved watching NASCAR races, fishing, and tailgating at 
K-State games. 
 The greatest pride of Jim’s life were his sons, and his grandkids. 
He spent as much time as possible following their lives, activities, 
sports, and livestock showing and even just playing with the littler 
kids. In his final days, he spoke of his pride in his sons and all they 
have accomplished, which he said he could never have done himself, but 
he truly enabled through his commitment as a father and grandfather. In 
the end, he shared the advice that we should all work less and enjoy our
 families more. 
 Jim’s family will miss his voice while fixing fence, nursing a 
newborn calf, putting up hay, and having a drink in the shop after the 
work is done. May we all remember Jim as ‘a mainly mild-mannered man’. 
 Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nancy; and brother, Randy.
 He is survived by his wife Carol (Carswell) Nichols, Alton; son,

James Robert Nichols

Erma J. Gerritzen, 68, died March 23, 2022, at Clara Barton Hospital 
ER, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born April 28, 1953, in LaCrosse, 
Kansas, the daughter of Leonard G. and Grace A. (Sell) Heine.&nbsp; Erma 
graduated from Hoisington High School in 1971.&nbsp; She later received her 
Associate Degree of Applied Science in Administration Technology and a 
certificate in Business Administration Technology from Barton County 
Community College.

On May 12, 1973, she married Robert L. Gerritzen in Hoisington, Kansas, together they had two sons, William and Matthew.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Erma was primarily a homemaker, she 
raised her two sons and kept the family running making sure everything 
was taken care of.&nbsp; Erma was a good cook and had worked as a cook for a 
local nursing home earlier in life.&nbsp; She loved animals and was a dog mom
 to three dogs, the latest love, Aida. Erma was a member of St. John the
 Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Robert L. Gerritzen of 
the home; and son Matthew of Hoisington; a sister, Shirley Batt of 
Hoisington; and two brothers, Ronnie (Wanda) Heine of Great Bend, and 
Wayne (Mary) Heine of Cushing, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Gerritzen, and her parents.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home, 
with family to greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will begin at 6 
p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2022,
 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm

Clifford William Jones

Vida M. (Hadley) Nyp passed away on March 21, 2022, at the Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, KS. at the age of 90. 
 She was born at her family home near Zurich, KS. on March 21, 1932, 
to Everett and Beulah (Lee) Hadley. Vida was united in marriage to Wayne
 Nyp on June 17, 1950. They were blessed with four children: Michael, 
Richard, Randy and Lori.
 Vida attended country School #61 through the 6th grade, Palco Grade 
School through the 8th grade, then Palco High School where she graduated
 in 1950. Her favorite classes were English and Typing. She also had 
fond memories of her Senior class trip to Colorado Springs.
 She especially enjoyed working in the Treasures and Clerks offices 
at the Rooks County Courthouse from 1970 until her retirement in 1996. 
Shortly after, she moved to Wamego, KS. to be closer to her family. Even
 though she moved away from Western Kansas she always considered Palco 
as her home because of the many memories of her family and friends. 
 Vida was an exceptional cook. Some of the family’s favorites 
included her fried chicken, homemade bread, dumplings, chocolate pie and
 especially her delicious Angel food cake. 
 Vida enjoyed living independently in her own home. Up until two 
weeks before her passing, she was able to drive and often walked 
downtown.
 She is survived by her children, Richard (Jerry) Nyp of Wamego, KS.,
 Randy (Susie) Nyp of Lawrence, KS. and Lori (Jeff) Morrissey of Wamego,
 KS.; brother-in-law George Lambert of McCook, NE.; daughter in law, 
Ruth Blank of McCook, NE.; eleven grandchildren and twenty- four great- 
grandchildren.
 In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband 
Wayne, her son Mike, and siblings Donald Hadley, Leland Hadley and Helen
 Lambert. 
 A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 
10:30AM, at the funeral home in Plainville, KS. Visitation will be 
Saturday morning from 8:00AM until 10:00 AM.

DeVerne Buchholz, 72, passed away March 19, 2022, at his residence.  He 
was born August 17, 1949, in Hays, Kansas, to LaVerne and Jane (Surprise) 
Buchholz.  He married Sue Cosgrave June 7, 2008, at Aulne. 

 Survivors 
include: wife, Sue Buchholz of rural Hillsboro; daughters, Krystal 
Aucutt of Missoula, Montana, Elisha Buchholz of Missoula, Montana, Bryna
 (Brad) Siemens of Wichita; sister, Jan (Leonard) Frantz of rural 
Hillsboro; 8 grandchildren.  Predeceased by his parents; brother, Kirk 
Buchholz in 1969.
