Betty Diederich

Thomas Kelly Hull passed away on June 26, 2022, in Downs, Kansas, at the 
age of 79. He was born on March 15, 1943, to Downer and Thelma (Kelly) 
Hull in Belleville, Kansas.
 Thomas grew up in Rooks County and graduated from Woodston Rural 
High School with the class of 1961. He was drafted during the Vietnam 
war and joined the Navy until his honorable discharge in 1968. Tom 
returned to Kansas and furthered his education at Fort Hays where he 
earned a bachelor’s degree in Art Education. He returned to Osborne 
County and spent his working life farming, and peddling antiques out of 
his shop in Alton. It was well known by his friends and family that Tom 
was a strong Christian with an ornery streak and a proud American. He 
was a member of the United Methodist Church in Woodston and VFW Post 
7743.
 It has been said, “Kindness is like a seed that when cultivated will
 continue to grow and grow.” Tom was a kind and loving man who lived to
 serve his family, friends, and Country. He will be remembered for his 
beautiful voice, his long-winded conversations and love for his friends 
and family.
 Tom is survived by his sister, Connie Hull (Bob Yattaw) of Victor, 
NY; nieces and nephews, Deanne (Bret) Wilson of Osborne, KS, Shane 
(Caitlyn) McNeal of Claremont, NH, Alexandra (Don) Kassing of 
Summerville, SC, Consuelo Hitchcock of Washington D.C.VA, Hilary 
Hitchcock of St. Louis, MO, Louisa (Rob) Spampinao of New York City, NY;
 great-nieces and nephews, Vanessa Wilson, Wyatt Wilson, Julian Hull, 
Jevelle Hull, Jasmine Hull, Francesca Kassing, Anna Kassing, Emilia 
Kassing, Dominic Kassing, Bruno Spampinao, Pascal Spampinao; 
brother-in-law, James Hitchcock of St. Louis, MO; and many cousins and 
friends.
 He joins in his heavenly home, his parents, Lee and Kelly Hull;

Sims.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the 
United Methodist Church in Stockton at 10 AM. Visitation will be on 
Friday at the funeral home from 2 PM until 8 PM.

Daniel Lee “Danny” Demoret, 70, died June 26, 2022, at Hospice House.
 He was born June 6, 1952, in Hutchinson, to William R. and Lola F. 
(Uncapher) Demoret.

Danny attended Hutchinson schools. He served in the United States 
Navy from 1969-1970 and the Kansas Army National Guard until 1977. Danny
 worked as a roofer and then plumber at Liberty Mobile Homes for 25 
years until they closed. He then worked as a maintenance man for Gisan 
Shaban. Danny loved spending time with his family and singing and 
dancing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was of the 
Christian faith.

On March 25, 1972, Danny married Vickie Lynn Blanton, in Hutchinson. She died December 19, 2005.

He is survived by: his daughters, Melinda Demoret of Hutchinson, 
Stephanie Brewer and her husband Brandon of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, 
Danielle Demoret, James Goldsberry, Harmony Demoret, William Demoret, 
Christian Pruitt, Andrew Pruitt, Levi Blanton, Amreza Blanton, Lakeynn 
Brewer, Arianna Brewer; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Demoret 
and wife Vickie of Hutchinson; sister, Sue Gore of Hutchinson; 
son-in-law, David Goldsberry of Luray; and many extended family members.

Danny was preceded in death by: his parents; grandsons, Brice 
Zizumbo, Parker Goldsberry; brothers, David Demoret, Steve Demoret; and a
 sister, Carolyn Daugherty.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, 
July 7, 2022, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery
 with military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard. 
Following the burial, there will be a “Celebration of Life” reception at
 Grandview Park and attendees are invited to bring a covered to dish to 
share.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru 
Wednesday, with the family present to receive friend from 6-8 p.m. 
Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

John M. Helfrich, 68, passed away June 25, 2022, at his home in Great
 Bend. He was born on November 30, 1953, in Great Bend, to Gerald &amp; 
Patricia (McMullen) Helfrich. He married Connie Deines in Great Bend and
 they later divorced.

John lived in Great Bend for most of his life. He lived in Oregon for
 a short time, then moved back to Kansas to help take care of his 
father.&nbsp; He was a Master Tool and Die Maker for Viega in McPherson prior
 to retiring.&nbsp; Recently he moved back to Great Bend to be closer to his 
family.&nbsp; He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima 
Catholic Church. John especially loved spending time with his family, 
camping, treasure hunting, Cheyenne Bottoms and star gazing.&nbsp;

Survivors include, his daughter, Nicole Helfrich of Great Bend; and 
two sisters, Shannon Smith of St. John and Kimberly Morse of Great Bend.
 He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral 
services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2022, at St. 
Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh 
Parappanattu presiding. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been 
designated to the Planetary Society or the Wetlands, in care of Bryant 
Funeral Home.

Thomas K. Hull

Noelle “Frenchie” Fincham of Hoxie, Kansas, 80, passed away on June 8, 
2022, at the Sheridan County Health Complex. Noelle was born Christmas 
Day, December 25, 1941, in Cannes, France. She grew up in Paris, France 
as an only child. She attended and graduated from high school. After 
high school, she attended nursing school in England. After graduating 
from nursing school, she worked at the American Hospital in Paris. She 
married and later divorced. Noelle was the mother of three children. 
Noelle and her children moved to the United States in 1981 and lived in 
Arizona.
 Noelle owned and operated a French Bakery while she and her family 
lived in Arizona. She was really a jack-of-all trades. She owned a 
restaurant, did catering, and enjoyed preparing food for friends and 
family. Her passion was volunteering and saving all animals lives that 
she possibly could save. She fostered and transported birds, cats, any 
animal, but she had a love for Blue Heelers.
 Noelle is survived by her daughters, Sophie Ozaneaux and Florence 
Ozaneaux of Hoxie; son, Antoine Ozaneaux of Colorado; grandchildren, 
Kelian Cheze, Dimitri Cheze; and great- grandchild, Harper Cheze.
 A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, July 3, 2022, 5:00 P.M.
 at the home of her daughter, 1124 Sheridan Avenue, Hoxie, Kansas. All

Noelle 'Frenchie' Fincham

Velma Mona Garvert passed into her heavenly home on June 25, 2022, at the
 Silverleaf Group Home in Plano, Texas, at the age of 91. She was born on
 November 3, 1930, in Palco, Kansas, to Frank and Elizabeth (Desmarteau) 
Marcotte. Velma was united in marriage to Donald Garvert and the couple 
was blessed with six children: Terrance (Terry), Mark, Randall (Randy), 
Donna, Roger, and Kay.
 Velma grew up in Rooks County where she graduated from Palco High 
School in 1948. Following high school she entered the workforce for a 
short stent at the Stockton Bank. She met and later married Donald 
Garvert on October 12, 1953, in Plainville at the catholic church and the
 couple moved to Fort Riley and Georgia before returning to Rooks County
 after Donald’s honorable military discharge. Velma had a competitive 
side, she enjoyed golf, entering her baked goods in competitions, any 
activity with her kids or grandchildren as well as rooting for the 
K-State sports. She loved to polka dance and later in her life she 
picked up painting and writing poetry and became very accomplished with 
her Christmas Card creations that were worthy of being on a Hallmark 
shelf. It was known by her friends and family, Velma was the life of the
 party. She would show up with a contagious smile and ready for a little
 mischief. Above all she was firm in her beliefs and raised up her 
children in a Godly home. She belonged to the Sacred Heart Church of 
Plainville, belonged to the D of I, and became a member of the St. 
Francis of Assisi when she moved to Texas in 2011. 
 Velma’s beauty and warmth radiated so brightly from her heart to 
everyone she met. She will be remembered for her tender care, her smile
 as bright as sunshine, and always there to help when needed. Her 
beautiful spirit will endure forever. We mourn the years that she will 
not have and we celebrate the time that was hers and the life that she 
lived. 
 She is survived by her children, Terrance (Linda) Garvert of 
Plymouth, MN, Mark (Sharon) Garvert of Olathe, KS, Randall (Janet) 
Garvert of Broomfield, CO, Donna Ruder of Frisco, TX, Roger (Anita)

Velma Mona Garvert

Eugene Adolph Schoenberger, 76, of Natoma, died Monday, June 20, 2022. 
He was born May 20, 1946, in Ransom, KS, to Daniel and Mary (Dechant) 
Schoenberger. Eugene graduated from Oakley High School in 1964 and went 
on to serve in the United States Army Airborne from 1965 to 1967. He 
also attended Barnes School of Business, in Denver, CO. On June 8, 1974,
 Eugene married Doris Jackson, in Colby, KS. He worked at S&amp;T 
Telephone Company for 44 years before retiring. Eugene served 17 years 
on the Brewster City Council and was a member of the Oakley Community 
Church. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Alvin 
Schoenberger; sisters, Delores Schoenberger, Dorothy Savacool, Patricia 
Herin and Darlene Hileman; daughters, Monica “Nicci” Russell and Brandi 
McConnell and grandsons, Tanner and Tobby Racette. 
He is survived by his wife Doris; daughter Martina (Shawn) Richards; 
brothers, Daniel, Edward and Ronald Schoenberger; sisters, Verlene Mader
 and Cindy Everly; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. 
Funeral Service was Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Colby, with burial in the Grinnell Township Cemetery, 
Grinnell.

Eugene Adolph Schoenberger, 76, of Natoma, died Monday, June 20, 2022. 
He was born May 20, 1946, in Ransom, KS, to Daniel and Mary (Dechant) 
Schoenberger. Eugene graduated from Oakley High School in 1964 and went 
on to serve in the United States Army Airborne from 1965 to 1967. He 
also attended Barnes School of Business, in Denver, CO. On June 8, 1974,
 Eugene married Doris Jackson, in Colby, KS. He worked at S&amp;T 
Telephone Company for 44 years before retiring. Eugene served 17 years 
on the Brewster City Council and was a member of the Oakley Community 
Church. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Alvin 
Schoenberger; sisters, Delores Schoenberger, Dorothy Savacool, Patricia 
Herin and Darlene Hileman; daughters, Monica “Nicci” Russell and Brandi 
McConnell and grandsons, Tanner and Tobby Racette. 
He is survived by his wife Doris; daughter Martina (Shawn) Richards; 
brothers, Daniel, Edward and Ronald Schoenberger; sisters, Verlene Mader
 and Cindy Everly; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. 
Funeral Service was Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Baalmann

Phillip Erlin Schweitzer, 74, of Osborne, Kansas, passed away Monday, 
June 20, 2022, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas. He 
was born on March 12, 1948, in Concordia, Kansas, to Erlin and Harriet 
(Leaver) Schweitzer. Phillip was the youngest of three siblings. 
 He grew up on the family farm east of Osborne. Phillip lived in 
Osborne for the majority of his life. As a child, he also lived in 
Roswell, New Mexico, and Claremont, California while his father’s 
construction company was completing jobs. He graduated from Osborne High
 School and went on to attend Fort Hays State University and then Brown 
Mackie College in Salina, Kansas. After college, Phillip worked as a 
bookkeeper at Quenzer Appliance in Osborne, KS, and helped his father on
 the farm. He soon joined the family farm full time where he worked 
until his death. His family was his pride and joy. He would do anything 
for his family. Phillip attended and helped with countless activities 
that his kids and grandkids participated in. In addition to his love for
 farming, he enjoyed being outdoors cutting wood, hunting, tending to 
the family pool, shooting fireworks, and hosting family barbeques &amp; 
holidays. He loved working with his hands and later in life developed a 
knack for carpentry after helping build the home they currently reside 
in. Phillip was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osborne, 
Kansas. 
 On September 13, 1969, Phillip married Carole Hadley from Portis, 
Kansas, and had three children, Joelle, Shawn, and Ashley. In 2019 they 
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. 
 Phillip is survived by wife Carole of the home; three children, 
daughter, Joelle Wolters, and husband Jason of Salina, Kansas; son Shawn
 Schweitzer of Osborne, Kansas, and daughter Ashley Carlson and husband 
Bryce of Perris, California; two sisters, Nancy Lane of Wichita, Kansas

Emma Anna Showalter, age 85, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022,&nbsp; at The Shepherd’s Center in Cimarron, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on March 19,
 1937, in Ness City, Kansas, the daughter of Mathias Nicholas and Thresia
 M. Fehrenback Opat.&nbsp; In 1998, she moved from Springdale, Arkansas to 
Garden City, Kansas and then to Cimarron, Kansas, in 2020.&nbsp; She was a 
department manger for Wal-Mart.

She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp;

On February 28, 1959, she married Clark Marion Showalter Sr. in 
Haysville, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on December 26, 2012, in Apache 
Junction, Arizona.

Survivors include her Two Sons - Mark N. Showalter of Garden City, 
Kansas, Clark M. &amp; Linda Showalter Jr. of Springdale, Arkansas, Two 
Daughters - Theresa L. &amp; Kevin Yott of Apache Junction, Arizona, and
 Cheryl E. Pelton of Gilbert, Arizona, Three Grandchildren and One Great
 Grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, and Two Brothers

Bonnie Jean (Coleman) Kelly, 90, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 20, 2022, at Main Street Manor in Russell.

She was born September 27, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Allen and Irma
 (Callahan) Coleman.&nbsp; Bonnie grew up in Omaha, graduating from Technical
 High School and continuing on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education 
from Omaha University in 1953.&nbsp; While attending the university, she was 
active in the modern dance company.

In August of 1953, Bonnie married Joseph M. Kelly, in Omaha, and 
began teaching art in the Omaha Public School system before they were 
blessed with four children:&nbsp; Kathy, Maureen, Peggy and Joe.&nbsp; In the late
 1960’s, Bonnie re-started her career as an interior designer, taking 
her artistic talents in a new direction, and enjoyed many years of 
success.&nbsp;

Bonnie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell, and, in
 her spare time, loved water color and oil painting, baking, dancing and
 taking care of her family.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Kathy McAdoo (Mike) of Russell, 
Kansas, Maureen Kelly-Miller of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, Peggy Kelly 
of Metairie, Louisiana and Joe Kelly (Maribel) of Dallas, Texas; Her 
grandchildren are Brian Kelly (Kierstin), Erin Manginelli (Joe), Megan 
Kelly Miller, Scott McAdoo (Audra), Giovanni Emestica and 
great-granddaughters, Kailyn, Adley, Lena, Amelia, Sadie and Alessandra.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Tom Coleman, and sister, Janine Kindler.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, 
June 27, 2022, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; The family

LeRoy J&nbsp; “Roy” Steckline, age 91, of 
Ogallah, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, at Trego Lemke&nbsp; 
Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. Roy graduated from Ellis High 
School. On April 25, 1955, he married Jacqueline (Ferland) in Damar, 
Kansas.

Roy was a hardworking man who farmed 
until 1997 and worked as a substitute mail carrier as well as a Trego 
County rural fireman. He was a US Army veteran serving with the 3rd 
infantry in the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic 
Church, Ellis VFW, and Ellis Knights of Columbus. Roy enjoyed decorating
 and landscaping with antiques, flowers, and rock arrangements, 
Refurbishing and repurposing antiques and nick knacks, Spending hours 
metal detecting and letting the kids dig up the treasure, Spending time 
with family, singing, and especially reading poems and stories to all of
 his little ones.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie 
Steckline of Ogallah; his children, Darryl Steckline of Ogallah, Jeanne 
Werth (James) of Pueblo CO, Sandy Bittel (Kevin) of Highlands Ranch CO, 
Brenda Zemanick (Mike) of Inman, SC, Ron Steckline (Cynthia) of 
Claremore OK, Lori Dechant (Ray) of Dodge City, LaVon Wagoner (Tony) of 
Paola KS, Amy Choitz (Justin) of Hays, a brother, Don Steckline&nbsp; of 
Hays; 17 Grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren with 2 on the way.

Wayne Robert 'Bob' Schreiner

Shirley Jean Hargadine, 71, passed away June 25, 2022, at St. Catherine Hospital, Centura Health in Dodge City, Ks.

She was born November 15, 1950, in Greensburg, KS, the daughter of 
Wayne and Elizabeth Knapp Thompson.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, she was a
 retired school teacher, for 30 plus years at the Jetmore Grade School, 
Jetmore, KS.

Shirley loved to scrapbook, bowl, quilt and spend time at the casino,
 where she would always win.&nbsp; She enjoyed hunting with her husband, 
going to gun shows and she was an avid sports fan. Anyone that spent 
time around Shirley knew she had a strong love for diet pepsi and 
chocolate. Shirley and Roy spent many summers living and working in 
Estes Park, CO.

On August 5, 1972, she married her high school sweetheart, Roy Dean Hargadine in Mullinville, KS.&nbsp; He passed away July 11, 2020.

Survivors include: brother, Larry (Tricia) Thompson, Lawrence, KS; 
two sisters, Linda (Paul) Kendall, Mullinville, KS, Karen (Kent) Fravel,
 Ford, KS; three nephews, Kevin (Laura) Fravel, Ford, KS, Lee (Ashton)

Shirley Jean Hargadine

Mark Owen Slattery, 50, passed away June 25, 2022, at his home in 
Larned, KS. He was born February 25, 1972, in Bucklin, KS, the son of 
James O. and Donna L. Vandehey Slattery. Moving from Protection and 
Dodge City, he was a Larned area resident for 14 years.

He was the pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church, Larned, a 
member of the Pawnee County Ministerial Alliance and a lifetime member 
of the VFW. Mark thoroughly loved supporting all his children in all 
they do and singing to his grandson. He enjoyed announcing at all Larned
 Indian sports and was an avid Royals and Chiefs fan.

On May 25, 1996, he married Shannon Winget in Dodge City, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: his father, James (Donnetta) Slattery, Dodge
 City, KS.; one daughter, Ashleigh Slattery, Manhattan, KS.; four sons, 
Jeremiah (Abigail) Slattery, Larned, KS., Ricky Slattery, Larned, KS., 
Christopher Slattery, Larned, KS. and Christian Slattery, Larned, KS.; 
one brother, Tom (Bridget) Slattery, Thomas, OK.; one sister, Lisa 
Statton, Grove, OK. and one grandchild, Nathaniel Slattery.

Larned United Methodist Church with Pastor Ryan Webster and Pastor Greg

Darlene
 Kay (Bell) Kasselman was born June 5, 1945, and joined the Lord on June 
21, 2022.&nbsp; Born to John Elmer and Ruby (Perkins) Bell in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp;
 She is survived by her husband Larry D. Kasselman of Valley Center; 
children Tammy Kasselman (Martin Navarrete), Daron Kasselman (Holly 
Kasselman); brother Ronald Bell (Patricia); sister Diane Cunningham; 
grandchildren Samantha Hill (Jeff Hill), Devan Navarrete, Brittany Young
 (Jake Wright), and Jacob Kasselman; great grandkids: Danielle, Waylen, 
&amp; Charlie Hayes, Jarrod and Jace Hill, Jianna &amp; Josie Wright; 
many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and 
grandson Jesse Navarrete.

As
 a youth she moved from Lyons to Sterling, Hays and finally Great Bend 
where she met Larry. She attended Brown Machie Business College in 
Wichita. It was in Great Bend where Darlene got her first glimpse of 
Larry. She was working in the upstairs office of Montgomery Wards. Larry
 would come over from the tire shop on Thursday night to pick up his pay
 envelope of $49.19 cash. Larry encountered Darlene on a double date and
 later asked his buddy permission to ask her out.&nbsp; Dating less than a 
year, they went to Pastor Talbet. As pastors are prone to do it wasn’t 
long before salvation came up. After presenting the love of God through 
Christ, She readily accepted. She grew in Jesus Christ becoming more and
 more faithful over 56 years.&nbsp; She worked in real estate in Great Bend 
and later opened a clothing store called “Tammy’s" to provide plus-size 
clothing for women. In 1979, Larry was transferred to Wichita and the 
family moved to Valley Center. Darlene got a job at Koch Industries 
which turned out to be more physical than she expected. She got a job 
with the Ark Valley State Bank for many years.&nbsp; Daughter Tammy was 
working in home health and Darlene then began working doing the books. 
They later decided to start their own company which became a family 
story starting in our home’s basement, relocating four times ending up 
in Wichita with a satellite office in Hutchinson. In early 2014 
Darlene’s mind began changing. The doctor gave her a piece of string and
 asked to make a circle with it to resemble a clock. She handed him back
 the string without understanding or trying. The doctor shook his head 
and sadly told us that dementia and Alzheimers is a cruel disease.

Darlene
 will be greatly missed by family and many friends and acquaintances. 
She was a champion of her family and helped many people who needed her 
help. To have her time back would be most selfish on our part. Christ 
has built her a mansion above. The family would like to sincerely wish 
to thank the workers and nurses from All Saints Home Care, Inc., 
Rivercross Hospice and Phoenix Hospice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eunice&nbsp;Agnes&nbsp;Hamel, age 87,&nbsp;former Hays, Kansas, resident&nbsp;died Thursday, June 23, 2022, at her home in Russell, Kansas.

She was born May&nbsp;29, 1935, in Damar, Kansas, to Armond Ernest and Ruby Amanda (Thibault) Newell. &nbsp;She married Robert Wilford Hamel on September 13, 1953, at Damar. &nbsp;He preceded her in death&nbsp;on January 29, 1978.

She worked at K-Mart in Hays for a number of years then worked at Wal-Mart for 28 years. &nbsp;Eunice grew up in Damar, and was a 1953 Graduate of Damar High School then attended the North Central Kansas Technical College&nbsp;in Beloit, Kansas. &nbsp;She moved from Wyoming to Hays in 1984, and attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. &nbsp;She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, computer games, KU sports, the Royals, and was an avid Denver Broncos fan. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Cindy Berland, Damar, KS; Dean Hamel and wife, Cheryl, Thornton, CO; Bruce&nbsp;Hamel and Danny Keosythong, Russell, KS; her son-in-law, Danny Phillips and wife, Vera, Salina, KS; her 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; her brothers, Vincent Newell and wife, Cindy, Hays, KS; and Bernard Newell and wife, Cynthia, Concordia, KS; her four sisters, Martha Hero, Broomfield, CO; Irma Laurin, Almena, KS; Theresa Thomas, Beloit, KS; Kathleen Krier and husband, Gary, Gypsum, KS; her sisters-in-law, Delores Newell, Damar, KS; Lyla Newell, Beloit, KS. John Paul Slaven, 93, died June 23, 2022, at Presbyterian Manor of the 
Plains in Dodge City. He was born on September 2, 1928, in Sitka, Kansas,&nbsp; the son of John W. and Dora I. (McClung) Slaven. Paul graduated 
from Weskan High School. Following graduation, Paul enlisted in the 
United States Army, serving his country from November of 1951 to 
November of 1953. After being honorably discharged, Paul began his 
career as an insurance agent for 25 years before retiring. On May 20, 
1951, Paul was united in marriage to Doris Ida Walker. They lived in 
Weskan, Palco, and Sharon Springs before moving to Cimarron in 1991. He was a member of the Cimarron Nazarene Church and the Rotary Club both of Cimarron. Paul
 is survived by two daughters, Diane Connally and husband Keith of 
Olathe and Shannon Satterfield of Derby; a daughter-in-law, Wrenn Slaven
 of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; two brothers, Charles Duane Slaven of 
Galveston, Texas and James Grant Slaven of Tucson, Arizona; a sister, 
Isabel Smith of West Plains, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Caleb, 
Prairie, Sage, Wyatt, Justin, Jamie, Beau, Britt, and Brayden; and four 
great grandchildren, Maverick, Greyson, Emory, and Lydia. He is preceded
 in death by two sons, Michael Paul Slaven and Greg Slaven; seven 
siblings, Frank, Louis, Winfield, Teddy, Lilly, Melissa, and Ruby. Funeral
 service will be held at the Cimarron Nazarene Church on Tuesday, June

John Paul Slaven

Janice Kay Folkerts, 77, passed away June 22, 2022, at Almost Home in
 Great Bend. She was born on May 20, 1945, at Great Bend, to Edwin &amp;
 Margaret (Halda) Hemken. She married Leon John Folkerts April 29, 1972,
 in Albert.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A lifetime Rush county resident, Janice was a paraprofessional for 
USD #428 and was very active on the farm. She was a member of Peace 
Lutheran Church in Albert and the church ladies quilting society. She 
enjoyed tending to her flower gardens but especially loved spending time
 with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Leon Folkerts of the home; a son, 
Jonathan Leon Folkerts of the home; a daughter, Christina Kay Folkerts 
and husband Randy Zellers of Wichita; two brothers, Edwin Hemkin, Jr. of
 Derby and Robert Hemken of Pawnee Rock; and four sisters, Joyce Hemken 
of Alvin, Tex., Dorothy Hessman of Dodge City, Susan Wozniak of Bella 
Vista, Ark. and Patricia Hemken of Great Bend. She was preceded in death
 by her parents; and an infant daughter, Victoria Rose Folkerts.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2022
 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., 
Monday, June 27, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert, with Rhonda 
Templing, SAM presiding.&nbsp; Interment will be in Peace Lutheran Church 
Cemetery of Albert.

 Margaret (Halda) Hemken. She married Leon John Folkerts April 29, 1972,
 in Albert.&nbsp;&nbsp;A lifetime Rush county resident, Janice was a paraprofessional for 
USD #428 and was very active on the farm. She was a member of Peace 
Lutheran Church in Albert and the church ladies quilting society. She 
enjoyed tending to her flower gardens but especially loved spending time
 with her family.Survivors include, her husband, Leon Folkerts of the home; a son, 
Jonathan Leon Folkerts of the home; a daughter, Christina Kay Folkerts 
and husband Randy Zellers of Wichita; two brothers, Edwin Hemkin, Jr. of
 Derby and Robert Hemken of Pawnee Rock; and four sisters, Joyce Hemken 
of Alvin, Tex., Dorothy Hessman of Dodge City, Susan Wozniak of Bella 
Vista, Ark. and Patricia Hemken of Great Bend. She was preceded in death
 by her parents; and an infant daughter, Victoria Rose Folkerts.Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2022
 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., 
Monday, June 27, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert, with Rhonda

Betty J. Nickols passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at Citizens 
Medical Center in Colby, KS, at the age of 91. She was born October 28, 
1930, in Rexford, KS to Walter Leroy Keefer &amp; Nellie Lois (Wilcox) 
Keefer.
 Betty was born and raised in Rexford, where she attended Rexford 
Consolidated Schools through her freshman year and transferred to 
Decatur Community High School in Oberlin, KS, to graduate there in 1948.
 She took "normal training" in H.S. to prepare her to further her 
education at Fort Hays State University (formerly known as Fort Hays 
Teacher College) earning her teacher certification.
 On March 13, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Joel T. Nickols 
at the home of Betty’s parents on the farm just outside Rexford. A 
daughter, Debbie and son, Tom were born to their union. They later took a
 foster daughter, Renee, who quickly became part of the family. 
 Betty taught school for two years before her children were born and 
went back to that profession periodically through her life when there 
was a need. At the age of 72 she taught her last full-time year in the 
Golden Plains music department.
 She also worked many years with Pioneer Girls Clubs where she 
traveled first as Regional Representative and later, 11½ states as South
 Central Area Director. Her job was to help churches begin the girls’ 
club programs and to conduct ladies training seminars across those 
states as well as supervise camping programs in CO, MO, AZ &amp; TX. She
 directed two of those camps in MO &amp; CO, building many lifetime 
friendships in the process.
 During this time, Betty &amp; husband, Joel, purchased the big red 
barn on Rexford Main Street for her to use as an office and fun place 
for family gatherings. They were soon approached about using the 
building as a Senior Citizen Center, and it became a dual-purpose 
facility. Seniors In Action, Inc. with Betty as Director, became the 
third Center in Thomas County to be partially funded by mill levy. One 
of the first groups to be formed within this organization was the Red 
Barn Gang with Betty at the piano, and this popular kitchen band 
continued to travel and entertain until her health no longer permitted.
 In 1983, Betty became part of the founding board of Shepherd’s 
Staff, with headquarters in her hometown of Rexford. She served with 
them as Executive Director until March of 2004 when she left them to 
form Second Chance @ Life. This is where she served until her death in 
the ministry of Christian counsel &amp; encouragement to a wide circle 
of hurting people.
 Betty was a member of Rexford Community Church and served in many 
capacities there through the years. Her interests centered around her 
family, her church, her music, and her many friends.
 Survivors include a brother Bob Keefer and wife, Opal, of Colorado 
Springs, CO; her children Debbie, of Budd Lake, NJ; Tom &amp; wife, 
Vicki, of Colby, KS; Foster daughter Renee &amp; husband, Peter, of

(Butch) Eversole– and a host of friends whom she loved. Betty was 
preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Joel and infant 
Great-granddaughter Addison Dawn Nickols.
 Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at the 
United Methodist Church of Colby at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be 
Monday, June 27, 2022 at the church from 5:00-7:00 PM. Burial in 
Rexford Cemetery.

Debbie Ann (Sander) Wallace passed away on June 22, 2022, at the young 
age of 52 after her battle with cancer in Hays, Kansas. She was born to 
Delbert and Rita (Baxter) Sander on October 22, 1969, in Plainville, 
Kansas. She was blessed with three children: Deven, Dylan, and Dayton.
 Debbie grew up in Stockton where she graduated with the class of 
1988. She then furthered her education at Manhattan Vo Tech and was a 
member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She went to work for KDOT as an 
engineering recruiter and worked there until her untimely passing. She 
was a proud and involved mother to her three children and was always 
supporting them in whatever venture they wanted to pursue. Debbie 
enjoyed time with her friends, family, her boyfriend Jeff Albert and his
 grandkids. She loved adventures with Jeff and her friends; spending 
time outside, attending K-State football games or looking for new places
 to eat. Debbie spent time at home perfecting her no-bake cookies and 
French toast recipes, while watching movies (particularly Hallmark), and
 loving on her dogs.
 She was a devoted follower of Christ and through the hardest times 
she would lean further into her faith with daily devotionals, bible 
study, and prayer. Her unwavering faith and will to live for her friends
 and family was unmatched. May we take every day as a blessing, learn to
 cherish the ties that bind and the time we have with the people we 
love.
 Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Delbert and Rita Sander

Jason Christopher Parker of Vassar, 
KS, passed away at 43 on Sunday, June 12, 2022, in his home. He was a 
beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Jason is survived 
by his wife of nearly 25 years, Cindy Parker; children, Sydney Parker of
 Emporia and Jaeden Parker; parents John and Lavon Parker; brother Scott
 (Carla) Fisher, sister Robyn Parker, sister Jessica (Isaac) Clark, 
sister Jana (Brandon) Comer, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, 
and uncles.

Jason was born on April 21, 1979, to 
John and Lavon in Hays, KS. When the family moved to Lyndon, KS, in the 
mid-nineties, Jason met his wife Cindy, and they married in 1997. By 
2004, Jason and Cindy had welcomed two children into their family. 
During much of the time they shared, they made a life full of happy 
memories that included attending numerous choir and band concerts; 
football, volleyball, basketball, and baseball games; mental math 
competitions; scholar’s bowl meets; forensics tournaments; and school 
and community plays. When they weren’t doing things to support their 
children, you could find them at concerts of their favorite bands, on 
road trips to visit family, quietly sitting and listening to their 
favorite music or watching their favorite movies, and watching their 
children grow into wonderful adults ready to make the world theirs. With
 their youngest having graduated in May and planning to attend KU in the
 fall, Jason and Cindy had begun planning for their next 25 years 
together.

While Jason’s light was extinguished 
much too soon, he made an impact on everyone he met and lived an 
authentic life full of love and laughter. Everything he did was done 
genuinely, whether that was spontaneous gift-giving or texting friends 
and family just to check in. Jason frequently took on the role of 
comedian in most situations, regardless of the appropriateness. He 
believed laughter eased any pain that life brought, which is why those 
closest to him will remember him for his mischievous laugh, warm 
(sometimes ridiculous) smile, and his terrible “dad” jokes. The best was
 when he would find something so funny (frequently whatever he had just 
said)—tears would fill his eyes, and he would quickly try to wipe them 
away while doing a hiccup kind of laugh. If he wasn’t making people 
laugh, he was doing his best to make everyone feel welcomed. Most would 
say he had never met a stranger. A joke among his wife and kids was how a
 “quick” trip to Casey’s could possibly last 30 minutes depending on who
 he ran into in the store. He truly knew someone everywhere he went, and
 even if he didn’t know them at first, he would by the end of their 
first conversation. Jason was an incredibly easy person to talk to 
because he listened with the intent of making sure people felt heard. 
When he wasn’t working, you could always find Jason supporting his 
family in some way, whether that was going to a performance for his 
daughter, a game to watch his son, working a ticket table for his wife, 
running out west to help his parents at their family business, or 
attending a gathering for another family member. Family was the most 
important thing to Jason, and he made sure all of his family felt that. 
If you were lucky enough to find yourself as a close friend, he 
considered you family as well and would drop everything to help if you 
were in need. He lived a life of bold, honest, and caring action and 
faith.&nbsp;

There will be a Celebration of Life 
to honor Jason on Saturday, June 25, at 2:00 pm at the Lyndon Community 
Building in Lyndon, KS. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that you

Margaret “Susan” Mason Maulin, 78, left to be with her Lord on June 14, 2022.

Susan was the most positive and joyous person as she felt that there was always a reason to celebrate, believing that the next great thing in anyone’s life was just around the corner and that everyone should follow their heart. She was wise, loving, smart, funny, joyful, helpful, and kind and was very optimistic that things work out in the end if one is patient.

Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Susan grew up on a wheat and cattle farm in Ness City, Kansas. Her love of reading began at an early age due to her mother and grandmother being teachers, and she would always sit at the feet of visiting relatives to learn more about life. She was a serious student; she and her first husband, Stan, had earned the distinction being the high school’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian, but since they had previously eloped and were expecting their first child, they were disqualified.  She furthered her education at Fort Hays state University and completed her studies at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas and received her Bachelors of Psychology degree the very same year that her two children graduated college!

One of the greatest days in Susan’s life was when she married Herb Mason. With their family, they moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she became involved at St. James Episcopal, St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral, and the Median Shriners. She was deeply spiritual and volunteered at churches and in their activities; there was seldom a time she wasn’t on a committee or volunteering at church! She also loved to perform and would sing at events occasionally, including the church choir for most of her life.

As a voracious reader, Susan had an amazing library, where she enjoyed religious studies, art, natural health, history, listening to music, and socializing. She collected beautiful things such as sculptures, crystal and china, including a collection of bells; she was very sentimental about her heirlooms. She also enjoyed politics and watching documentaries. She was a waitress at a young age, a veterinarian assistant, a scrub nurse, a homemaker, a student at the University, an employee at Dillard’s Department Store, and volunteered at a homeless shelter. Susan loved children and helped family and friends take care of their children all her life.

Susan never knew a stranger. She had the biggest heart and loved everyone she met. She shared her knowledge with people in her life, always knowing the right thing to say or do. When she no longer had words, she still found ways to share her heart and was the family’s angel on earth!

Both of her late husbands were Marines, but also friends.  Susan was widowed twice, but the love of her life was Herbert Leo Mason. They were together from 1972 until his death in 2003.

Susan is preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Maulin and Herb Mason; her first great-grandson, Rupert Glenn Neil; her parents, Pauline and Jones Neill; her aunt Marybel Stokes; and her beloved Chihuahua, Bella.

Susan leaves behind her son, Michael Cranston of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Renae Dillard and husband, Mac of College Station; her grandchildren, Marta Gulbe and Aaron, of College Station; Alix Neil and Jake of Goodyear, Arizona; and Ashley Bolton and David of College Station; the father of her children, Stan Cranston and Mick of Parker, Colorado; her siblings, Sally Jo Murphy, Sharon Elizabeth Rupp and Steve, and Catherine Louise Hull and Ron; four nieces; one nephew; and many other relatives who will miss her dearly.

The family wishes to acknowledge the special care of her caregivers, Linda Hamilton of five years; Queens Gaines, Rhonda Oldham; and the staff at Enhabit Hospice, including Chaplin, Brent Sims, Dawn, Joyce, Norma, Andrea, and many other caring staff members.

In honor of Susan, the family will celebrate with friends by sharing stories and eating her favorite Marble Cake at 5:00pm on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 1004 Shady Drive, College Station, Texas 77840.

She was a serious student; she and her first husband, Stan, had earned the distinction being the high school’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian, but since they had previously eloped and were expecting their first child, they were disqualified. She furthered her education at Fort Hays state University and completed her studies at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas and received her Bachelors of Psychology degree the very same year that her two children graduated college!One of the greatest days in Susan’s life was when she married Herb Mason. With their family, they moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she became involved at St. James Episcopal, St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral, and the Median Shriners. She was deeply spiritual and volunteered at churches and in their activities; there was seldom a time she wasn’t on a committee or volunteering at church! She also loved to perform and would sing at events occasionally, including the church choir for most of her life.As a voracious reader, Susan had an amazing library, where she enjoyed religious studies, art, natural health, history, listening to music, and socializing. She collected beautiful things such as sculptures, crystal and china, including a collection of bells; she was very sentimental about her heirlooms. She also enjoyed politics and watching documentaries. She was a waitress at a young age, a veterinarian assistant, a scrub nurse, a homemaker, a student at the University, an employee at Dillard’s Department Store, and volunteered at a homeless shelter. Susan loved children and helped family and friends take care of their children all her life.Susan never knew a stranger. She had the biggest heart and loved everyone she met. She shared her knowledge with people in her life, always knowing the right thing to say or do. When she no longer had words, she still found ways to share her heart and was the family’s angel on earth!Both of her late husbands were Marines, but also friends. Susan was widowed twice, but the love of her life was Herbert Leo Mason. They were together from 1972 until his death in 2003.Susan is preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Maulin and Herb Mason; her first great-grandson, Rupert Glenn Neil; her parents, Pauline and Jones Neill; her aunt Marybel Stokes; and her beloved Chihuahua, Bella.Susan leaves behind her son, Michael Cranston of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Renae Dillard and husband, Mac of College Station; her grandchildren, Marta Gulbe and Aaron, of College Station; Alix Neil and Jake of Goodyear, Arizona; and Ashley Bolton and David of College Station; the father of her children, Stan Cranston and Mick of Parker, Colorado; her siblings, Sally Jo Murphy, Sharon Elizabeth Rupp and Steve, and Catherine Louise Hull and Ron; four nieces; one nephew; and many other relatives who will miss her dearly.The family wishes to acknowledge the special care of her caregivers, Linda Hamilton of five years; Queens Gaines, Rhonda Oldham; and the staff at Enhabit Hospice, including Chaplin, Brent Sims, Dawn, Joyce, Norma, Andrea, and many other caring staff members.In honor of Susan, the family will celebrate with friends by sharing stories and eating her favorite Marble Cake at 5:00pm on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 1004 Shady Drive, College Station, Texas 77840.
