Phillipsburg resident Norma M. Johnson passed away July 21, 2022, at
 the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 
94.&nbsp; She was born June 14, 1928, in Phillips County, KS.

Survivors include her sons, Craig of Phillipsburg &amp; Blane of Wray, CO; 4 grandchildren &amp; 11 great grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held Thursday, July
 28, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, 
with Randy Elder officiating. The service will be streamed live on the 
Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. Burial will follow in the 
Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Wednesday at the funeral home.

Philip Alan Barber, 85, passed away on July 20, 2022, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on February 23,&nbsp;1937, to Virgil and Helen (Lloyd) Barber in Los Angeles, California.

Phil graduated from Plainville High School in 1956. After graduation he joined the United States Air Force, after 4 years he was honorably discharged. He was united into&nbsp;marriage&nbsp;to his high school sweetheart Mary Ann&nbsp;Kaba, on May 2,&nbsp;1957, at the Sacred Heart Church in Plainville, Kansas. The couple was blessed with three children Cindy, David, and Kathy.

Phil worked in the oil fields and Sooner Pipe and Supply while living in Kansas, then he moved to Iowa and worked in a packing house until retirement. Phil loved going to auctions and garage sales, always looking for that one special piece of glass. He collected many, many, pieces through the years but his favorite was Fenton glass. Every once in awhile he would enjoy going to the casino and trying his luck at the slots. He loved sports, mostly the Jayhawks. If his TV was on, it had sports playing.

He is survived by his children, Cindy (Mike) McGuire of Carter Lake, IA, David (Carla) Barber of Oakland, IA, Kathy (Roger) Nelson of Hancock, IA; grandchildren, Jeremy (Laurie) Barber, James (Natalie) Barber, Jason Barber, Justin (Janeth) Barber, Sarah&nbsp;(Zach) McGuire, Rachel (Aaron) Michalski, Emily McGuire, Emily Frink, Kirsten Nelson; great-grandchildren, Haley, Alexis, Ellie, Tate, Beau, Arianna, Theo, Ariana and Gwen; sister, Karen (Jay) Wilson; brothers-in-law, Mike (Lisa)&nbsp;Kaba, Mark&nbsp;Kaba; sisters-in-law, Nell&nbsp;Kaba, Jeanne Barber, Patty Foltz; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbor and friend Debbie and many others.

Michael Lee McKinney, age 69, of Hays, 
Kansas, died in his home on June 28, 2022.&nbsp; He was born May 29, 1953, in 
Ellis, Kansas, to Chester Lee and Bonnie Jean (Mickelson) McKinney.

He married Deborah (Gutierrez) Rico on August 13, 1979, in Meade, Kansas.

Michael grew up in Meade.&nbsp; In 1971, he 
graduated from Meade High School and following his graduation he served four&nbsp; years in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1975 and was a Vietnam Veteran.

He is survived by his brother: Dave of 
Hays, Kansas; sisters: Pam Ackerman of Meade, Kansas; and Carol Jones of
 San Antonio, Texas.&nbsp; Step-daughters: Jennifer Moore; Crystal Rico; 
Laurena Rico; a step-brother: Jimmy DeLong, and a step-sister: Pam 
McGee; together with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother: Everett; sister: Connie Ritter; and his step-brother: Joe DeLong.

Gerald D. 'Jerry' Matheson

Christiane Wade Luehrs, 81, passed away quietly in her sleep at her home on July 14, 2022. She was born September 30, 1940, to Reynolds W. Wade, M.D., and Theodora Pomeranz Wade in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up near the shores of the Great Lakes. She graduated from Valparaiso University, earned a Master's Degree in History from Washington University in St. Louis, and received a Master's Degree in English from Fort Hays State University. At Washington University, she met Robert Luehrs, a fellow student. It was his good fortune to marry her in 1965. The couple moved to Hays in 1968 so that Robert could pursue a career as a Professor of History at Fort Hays State University.

Chris had the attributes of a Renaissance woman. She was a perceptive lady of wit, culture, talent, grace, and creativity. She was also devoted to her family and friends. At various times she worked as an assistant for professors and physicians, was office manager for the Campus Ecumenical Center, and ran her own catering business. Primarily, Chris was an educator, as a high school history teacher in St. Louis and, for 15 years, as an Instructor of English at FHSU, retiring in 2006. She published a number of articles on mystery authors who use historical settings for their novels.

She liked shopping for Victorian oddities, reading British detective stories, collecting teddy bears, preparing various ethnic foods, and being hostess at elaborate parties and dinners. She enjoyed mythology and folklore, especially the tales attached to Halloween. With her husband, she designed a Halloween festival at FHSU in the 1970s and 1980s and subsequent Halloween displays in the university's library until last year, quitting not because of a lack of ideas but because of a lack of energy. Chris held offices in Eastern Star and volunteered at the Hays Arts Council. She served as a lay reader and head of the Altar Guild for St. Michael's Episcopal Church. She played the piano and organ for pleasure. As befit a Renaissance woman, she helped organize the university's annual Renaissance Christmas celebration, the Madrigal Dinner, for fifteen years, playing the roles of Lady of the Manor for five years and the Queen of England twice.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; her daughter, Rebecca Johnson of Nowata, Oklahoma; her son-in-law, Patrick Johnson; her granddaughter, Roslin Johnson; her brother, E. Nicholas Wade of Aurora, Illinois; and her cousin, Martha Ellison of Alexandria, Virginia. There will be a service celebrating Chris' life later in the fall, her favorite season. If desired, memorials may be made to Forsyth Library at FHSU, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, or the Humane Society of the High Plains.

(Staley) Jimison. She graduated from Lorraine High School in 1961 and on
 October 17, 1964, she married James Urbanek. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Larry Jimison, James
 Jimison, and Michael Jimison, and sister, Cathy Preston. 
She is survived by her husband, James of Colby; children, Jamie (Paul) 
Heskett, of Oakley, KS; and Mitch Urbanek, of Plainville, KS; brother, 
Kyle (Debbie) Jimison, of Bushton, KS; seven grandchildren; 10 great 
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Cheryl Kay Urbanek (Jimison)

Doris "Dode" Marie (Moore) Gallion was born on 
August 9, 1930, in Hunter, Kansas, to Forrest and Beulah Beryl (Baird) 
Moore of Hunter, Kansas. She was their third child. She departed this 
life peacefully on Saturday, July 16, at Pinnacle Park in Salina, Kansas,&nbsp; at the age of 91 years. Doris attended school in Hunter and graduated 
from Hunter High School in 1948. She began teaching in Ash Grove after 
graduation. She was a baptized in the Hunter United Methodist Church. 
She became a faithful and active member of the church throughout her 
life in Hunter. On March 2, 1952, Doris Moore married her high school 
sweetheart and love of her life, Gale Edward Gallion. To this union, 
three children were born: Brenda Gayle, Kirk Dale, and JD. Sadly, Doris 
lost her beloved Gale on June 12, 1959.

Once her children were in school, Doris worked at the post office in 
Hunter while taking night classes and summer school from Marymount 
College in Salina. With grit and determination, Doris graduated from 
Marymount with a BS in elementary education in 1968. She began teaching 
in Lincoln, Kansas the following school year. In 1978, she continued her
 career by accepting a 2nd grade teaching position at USD 299 at Sylvan 
Unified. She later would teach Language Arts for the school district. 
“Mrs. Gallion” taught hundreds of children throughout her and held a 
warm spot for each one. She thoroughly loved teaching the children. She 
retired from public education in 1993. However, the lessons she taught 
continue to this day. Doris was a member of the Hunter United Methodist 
Church, the Hunter Ladies Auxiliary and the Bluebirds. She was a 4-H 
cooking leader. Dode was a dancer! She spent many nights driving “the 
ladies” to area singles’ dances. She loved movies, especially the ones 
with Elvis Presley. Viva Las Vegas being her favorite! But her pride and
 joys were her children and grandchildren! What a supporter she has been
 through the years!

Dode was well known for a lot of things, many of which have to do 
with food! Her tasty pies and cookies (notably her coconut cream pie 
which became a staple at the Legion Hall for the Hunter pheasant 
dinners), her delectable divinity, the seemingly endless supply of ice 
cream and Schwann’s treats in the freezer and of course… her popcorn 
balls! Kids (and parents alike) would make their way to Dode’s front 
door on Halloween (and sometimes Christmas)!

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Gale, her parents, Frosty
 and Beryl, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Inez Gallion,
 her brothers, Jerry Moore and Don Moore, sisters-in-law Eldora Seehafer
 and Wanda Moore, brother-in-law, Melvin Seehafer and granddaughter, 
Ginny Mae Frederking. She will be forever lovingly remembered by her 
daughter, Brenda (Alex) Andresen, Salina, Kansas; sons Kirk (Pam) 
Gallion, Mahaska, Kansas; and JD Gallion, Winifred, Kansas, 
grandchildren: Gayle (Andy) Williams, Salina, Candace (Jess) Zachgo, 
Tescott, Evan Frederking, Colwich, Kansas, Andrew (Natalia) Andresen, 
Waxahachie, Texas, Lindsay (CJ) Mettlen, Wilson, Kansas, Tahra (Jared) 
Zenger, Haddam, Kansas, Shelby (Colter) Brzon, Haddam, Kansas, Parker 
Gallion, Topeka, Kansas and Kinsley Gallion, Overland Park, Kansas,

 </figure>Doris "Dode" Marie (Moore) Gallion was born on 
August 9, 1930, in Hunter, Kansas, to Forrest and Beulah Beryl (Baird) 
Moore of Hunter, Kansas. She was their third child. She departed this 
life peacefully on Saturday, July 16, at Pinnacle Park in Salina, Kansas,&nbsp; at the age of 91 years. Doris attended school in Hunter and graduated 
from Hunter High School in 1948. She began teaching in Ash Grove after 
graduation. She was a baptized in the Hunter United Methodist Church. 
She became a faithful and active member of the church throughout her 
life in Hunter. On March 2, 1952, Doris Moore married her high school 
sweetheart and love of her life, Gale Edward Gallion. To this union, 
three children were born: Brenda Gayle, Kirk Dale, and JD. Sadly, Doris 
lost her beloved Gale on June 12, 1959.Once her children were in school, Doris worked at the post office in 
Hunter while taking night classes and summer school from Marymount 
College in Salina. With grit and determination, Doris graduated from 
Marymount with a BS in elementary education in 1968. She began teaching 
in Lincoln, Kansas the following school year. In 1978, she continued her
 career by accepting a 2nd grade teaching position at USD 299 at Sylvan 
Unified. She later would teach Language Arts for the school district. 
“Mrs. Gallion” taught hundreds of children throughout her and held a 
warm spot for each one. She thoroughly loved teaching the children. She 
retired from public education in 1993. However, the lessons she taught 
continue to this day. Doris was a member of the Hunter United Methodist 
Church, the Hunter Ladies Auxiliary and the Bluebirds. She was a 4-H 
cooking leader. Dode was a dancer! She spent many nights driving “the 
ladies” to area singles’ dances. She loved movies, especially the ones 
with Elvis Presley. Viva Las Vegas being her favorite! But her pride and
 joys were her children and grandchildren! What a supporter she has been
 through the years!Dode was well known for a lot of things, many of which have to do 
with food! Her tasty pies and cookies (notably her coconut cream pie 
which became a staple at the Legion Hall for the Hunter pheasant 
dinners), her delectable divinity, the seemingly endless supply of ice 
cream and Schwann’s treats in the freezer and of course… her popcorn 
balls! Kids (and parents alike) would make their way to Dode’s front 
door on Halloween (and sometimes Christmas)!Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Gale, her parents, Frosty
 and Beryl, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Inez Gallion,
 her brothers, Jerry Moore and Don Moore, sisters-in-law Eldora Seehafer
 and Wanda Moore, brother-in-law, Melvin Seehafer and granddaughter, 
Ginny Mae Frederking. She will be forever lovingly remembered by her 
daughter, Brenda (Alex) Andresen, Salina, Kansas; sons Kirk (Pam) 
Gallion, Mahaska, Kansas; and JD Gallion, Winifred, Kansas, 
grandchildren: Gayle (Andy) Williams, Salina, Candace (Jess) Zachgo, 
Tescott, Evan Frederking, Colwich, Kansas, Andrew (Natalia) Andresen, 
Waxahachie, Texas, Lindsay (CJ) Mettlen, Wilson, Kansas, Tahra (Jared) 
Zenger, Haddam, Kansas, Shelby (Colter) Brzon, Haddam, Kansas, Parker 
Gallion, Topeka, Kansas and Kinsley Gallion, Overland Park, Kansas, 
Great-grandchildren: Gleason Williams, Harper Williams, and Hampton

Doris 'Dode' Marie (Moore) Gallion

Robert T. Firestone was born November 4, 1928 in Odessa, MO&nbsp;and died July 19, 2022 at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse, KS.&nbsp; In between he had a rich and varied life. Perhaps his greatest interest lay in the study and teaching of German. After graduating from Central Methodist College in MO, he earned a Master's degree at the University of Nebraska, and later a Ph.D. at Indiana University.

He was also a talented pianist and actor and, in retirement, played several roles with the FHSU theatre, most memorably Dr. Chumley in "Harvey."

Before he began work on his Ph.D., he served for two years in the US Army in Berlin, Germany, where his job was to monitor radio activity in the Russian zone. His Berlin experience was life changing.&nbsp; Since barracks were not yet available, he boarded with a German family and became fully fluent in both standard German and Berlin dialect. Because he didn't smoke, he could trade his weekly issue of cigarettes for meals in good restaurants and the exciting theatrical and musical events of the big city. After receiving his Ph.D. he taught at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and then at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he met and married Ruth Hartzell, a graduate student in German, and adopted her children, Andrew Rentz and Susan Rentz, now Susan Krause.&nbsp; Other members of the family are his granddaughter Katharine Abdoo and her twins Will and Brie, his great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 25, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St Joseph Catholic Church, 215&nbsp;West 13th Street, Hays, Kansas 67601, with Father Rich Daise officiating. Robert's family will receive guests from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Military services will follow the mass on the east lawn of the church.

Jason James “Wally” Walters, 47 passed away at his home in Euless, Texas, on July 19, 2022. 
 He was born on May 20, 1975, in Hays, Kansas. At an early age, he became
 involved in music and playing guitar. In 1998, he relocated to Fort 
Worth, TX. to pursue his music career with Ben and Jenny Bunker, Brett 
Straight, Jacy McCann, Shawn Normandin with James Herman soon to follow.
 Playing venues and concerts all over the map, multiple studio recorded 
albums, he made his mark in the music business and countless friends 
along the way. With Kerri and Natalie, his pride and joys, 
they established their forever home together in Euless, TX. Along with 
his music career, he pursued the home building industry building homes 
for countless families in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. With desires to 
seek perfection, he was an avid music and guitar collector, a master in 
the kitchen and BBQ guru. He was preceded in death by his dad,
 Dr. Roy Neil of Hays, KS. He leaves his wife of 13 years, Kerri 
Walters; his daughter Natalie Olivia Walters; his mom Elizabeth Neil of 
Hays KS; his father Jim Walters of Hays, KS., In-laws Neil and Sue 
O’Leary, his sister Jennifer Neil Farmer, her husband Robb Farmer and 
their son Sam. Brother John Neil and his wife Shaheen, children, Jacob,

Jason James 'Wally' Walters

Cynthia Rae Wittman, age 72, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 19, 
2022, at her home. She was born January 28, 1950, in Russell, Kansas, 
the daughter of Albert F. and Helen L. (Frederick) Wittman. 
Cindy was raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. She
 continued her education at Ft. Hays State University and earned a 
Bachelor of Science Degree in Education; a degree which she used for 40 
years. Cindy taught first grade for one year and then devoted her time 
and energy into being a librarian. She began her career in Arlington, 
Nebraska, then Cozad, Nebraska, Hutchinson and Ulysses, Kansas. Cindy 
was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, KNEA and GCTA, and donated her time 
at Loaves and Fishes. She also worked part-time at Pioneer 
Communications and the Grant County Library for many years. Cindy lived
 her life for her faith, family, and friends. She was a longtime member
 of Grace Lutheran Church.

She was very active in the church and helped
 wherever she was needed. Cindy’s family and friends were everything to
 her. Her nephew, nieces, great-nephew and great-nieces were the apple 
of her eye. She doted on them constantly. If you ever met Cindy, you 
were soon her friend. She cherished her friends. They would meet 
regularly for meals, and she kept in touch with them all. She will be 
remembered as a very generous and loving person with a heart of gold. 
Cindy is survived by her sister, Jane Vanek of Hays, Kansas; nephew, 
Justin Vanek and wife Sami of Hays, Kansas; nieces, Jennifer Gronniger 
and husband Glen of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jessica Mobilia and 
husband Adrian of Frankford, Delaware; great-nephews and great-nieces, 
Jacob, Gwenyth and Jayce Gronniger, Maci and Miley Vanek, and Reilly 
Mobilia and a host of friends. 
Cindy is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Helen Wittman; sister, Karen Sue Wittman; and brother-in-law, James Vanek. 
Memorial service will be held at a later date at the Grace Lutheran 
Church in Ulysses. A family inurnment will be held at the Russell City 
Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.

Kevin Edward Schukman, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 18, 2022 at his home.&nbsp; He was born January 25, 1955, in Hays to Edward John Schukman and Sybilla (Giebler) Schukman.&nbsp; He graduated from Hays High School in 1973. On September 19, 2005 he married Kathleen Mae Herrman in Great Bend, Kansas.

Loving, gentle, compassionate, and welcoming to all, no matter the circumstances, Kevin was a fine example of what a real man should be.&nbsp;&nbsp;Active in Kiwanis, especially the flag program, he was also involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Catholic Campus Center at Fort Hays, Hays Chamber of Commerce, charity golf tournaments, and Chiefs! Chiefs! Chiefs! He would willingly drop everything to help anyone — even for a leaky toilet — offering his talents as plumber, carpenter, electrician, or IT guru.&nbsp;He was employed by Eagle Communications for many years.

Kevin showed his love for friends and family by cooking for them, especially&nbsp;taco Tuesdays with his grandchildren. Above all, Kevin loved and prioritized family, especially honing his talents as a doting grandpa.&nbsp;It’s not easy to lose Kevin, but it will always be easy to honor him by sharing our memories, helping others, loving our families, enjoying good food, and cheering on our Chiefs!

He is survived by his daughters, Sarah (Josh) Smith, (Hays, KS); and Suzanne (Eric Cline) Whitaker, (Kansas City, MO); and step daughter Carrie (Jesse) Goetz, (Topeka, KS); one sister and three brothers; Jay and Nancy Schukman (Richmond, VA); John and Linda Schukman (Lansing, KS); Ruth Schukman-Dakotas and Dan Dakotas (De Soto, KS) and Mark and Gloria Schukman (Overland Park, KS); and grandchildren Carter Jones, Laylah Pfannenstiel, Kolyn Pfannenstiel, and Ella Smith, and a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandparents, and other loved ones.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St Joseph Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street, Hays, KS 67601, with Father Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at 4:00 PM in the parish cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be Friday, July 22, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a parish vigil service at 7:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Street Hays, KS 67601.

Agnes Finger, 94, Passed away July 20, 2022, at Country Living Senior Plus, Larned.

Agnes Vondracek was born October 24, 1927, at Timken, Kansas, the 
daughter of Joseph A. and Ludmila Pechanec Vondracek.&nbsp; She attended the 
Timken Grade School, Bison High School, graduating with the class of 
1945.&nbsp; She also attended Fort Hays State College. Agnes taught in the 
Timken Grade School for the years of 1946 and 1947.&nbsp; She worked in the 
Farmers and Merchants State Bank of La Crosse for a short period of time
 before her marriage.

Leonard A. Finger and Agnes Vondracek were married on May 11, 1948, 
in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.&nbsp; This was in a 
double wedding ceremony with Helen Pechanec, Agnes’ cousin, and 
Leonard’s brother, Marvin.&nbsp; Father Emil J. Kapaun, who later was a 
Korean War Chaplain, was Pastor of the Timken Parish and witnessed their
 marriage as well as Father Norbert Staab of Larned, and Father Frank 
Huslig of La Crosse, assisting.

Leonard and Agnes began their married life on the Finger home place 
north of Larned before moving to a farm eleven miles west of Larned in 
1950 that was to be their home for the next 50 years before retiring to 
Larned.&nbsp; Agnes enjoyed gardening, yard work, refinishing furniture, 
researching family history and quilting.&nbsp; Working with young people was 
also her joy and she was the Tiny Toilers 4-H club foods leader for many
 years when her daughters were in 4-H.&nbsp; She taught religious education 
classes for her church and formerly served on the Education Committee as
 well as the Endowment Board.&nbsp; She served on the Pawnee County 4-H 
Foundation and assisted with the 4-H Fair and later with the Pawnee 
County Open Fair.&nbsp; She felt privileged to visit the homebound members of
 her church and was active on the Funeral Dinner Group of the Altar 
Society for many years.

Survivors include three sons: Mark and wife Jonnie, Lawrence, Greg, 
Garfield; Tom and wife, Connie, Augusta; son-in-law, Dave Vickery, 
daughters Margaret and husband Lee Scheufler, Sterling; Susan Latimore, 
Larned; Julie and husband Scott Borchardt, Walpole, Massachusetts.&nbsp; 
Nineteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard, her 
two brothers Frank and Rudy and their wives, her daughter Mary Ellen, 
daughter-in-law Jennifer Otte Finger and a grandson Garrett Finger.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Sacred 
Heart Catholic Church with Father Bernard Felix presiding.&nbsp; Vigil 
service and Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 22nd, at 
Beckwith Mortuary.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday 
with family present from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary.&nbsp;

Holly Lynn Pommerehn, 42, departed this life July 15, 2022, in Wichita, 
Kansas. She was born December 25, 1979, in Hoxie, Kansas. She grew up 
surrounded with love from her parents, James and Kris (Beynon) 
Pommerehn, and her younger siblings: sister, Rebecca and brother, 
Jeffrey. They had a close bond that has lasted through the years. Like 
most, Holly engaged in wrestling with her sister and “fighting like 
siblings," to watching Jeffrey, usually with friends that he irritated 
to no end.  It was this type of bond Holly also had with her parents. 
Dad was constantly saving her from “the biggest spiders." And mom always
 trying to get her to play inside. 

But that was seldom where Holly 
wanted to be. She was an outdoor girl. Holly loved swimming, spending 
time at the lake, and car rides to Watertown, South Dakota to see 
family. On these trips she tested her parent’s patience, not stopping 
until their buttons were pushed. In later years she enjoyed camping any 
time she could get away. Although Holly loved spending time outdoors, 
she was always particular about her beautiful hair. In fact, before her 
flight to Wichita she told Ryan that all she needed to take was her 
shampoo.
 	Holly attended Hill City Grade and Middle School and graduated from
 Hill City High School. While in high school she participated in band, 
volleyball, track, and was the wrestling manager. She enjoyed playing 
softball during the summer. Throughout high school she worked at the 
Graham County Hospital as a nurse’s aide. For most of her life after 
high school she worked as a retail clerk.
 	October 13, 2001, Holly married William Ashbaugh and the couple had
 two daughters: Jacelynn and Braelynn. They later divorced. Holly met 
Joel Lemon, and they were married September 18, 2010. Joel adopted 
Holly’s daughters. In 2020, their marriage ended.
 	Holly’s daughters were her world and the joy of her life. She 
made each Christmas and birthday so very special. Holly was the mother 
all her daughter’s friends wished they had. At Christmas she made 
reindeer food with the girls which included oatmeal and lots of glitter.
 One Christmas the girls were surprised with new bikes. Holly barricaded
 their bedroom door so they would find them when they got up. Random 
texts and notes on their mirror were always a reminder of her love and 
constant support. 
 	Holly was preceded in death by her grandparents: Joyce McIntyre and
 Cleona and Gale “Boomer” Pommerehn.

Left to cherish her memory include 
her parents, Kris and James Pommerehn of Hill City; her significant 
other, Ryan Shaw of Oakley, Kansas; two daughters: Braelynn Lemon (Brent 
Kelley) of Hill City and Jacelynn Lemon of Bogue; a granddaughter Elly 
Kelley; her sister Rebecca Wilkie (Jesse) of Hays; her brother Jeffrey 
Pommerehn (Caci) of Hays; one nephew and three nieces. Although Holly is
 no longer with us, she will live forever in the hearts of those who 
loved her.&nbsp;

Betty Ann (Schwien) Radke was born August 19, 1932, in Russell County, Kansas, the daughter of Sigmund and Lydia (Bender) Schwien.&nbsp; Betty passed away July 18, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 89 years and 11 months. &nbsp; Betty was baptized September 18, 1932, and confirmed April 14, 1946, in the Bender Hill Church. Betty was united in marriage with Hubert S. Radke at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas on June 12, 1949. Betty was a dedicated farmer’s wife and devoted mother of four children.&nbsp; She worked along side her husband in the farming and construction business and the sons later joined with Sammy in the dirt construction business and Jon in the farming and stockman business. Betty along with her husband were youth leaders at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She sang in the church choir and a gospel singing group sharing the Word of God to many around the state.&nbsp; She welcomed anyone to her home and they could expect a great meal or a good visit.&nbsp; She was talented in sewing, cooking and gardening. Betty is survived by two sons, Sammy H. Radke and wife Penny, of Milberger, Kansas; Jon Radke and wife Brenda, of Hays, Kansas; two daughters Kathleen M. Radke and husband Steven, Hays, Kansas, and Elizabeth A. Radke and Gary Jacobs of Russell, Kansas; two granddaughters, Melissa D. Radke and Mandy L. Radke both of Russell, Kansas; two grandsons Tyler R. Angle and Sheldon F. Angle, both of Hays, Kansas; and five great-grandchildren, Natasha and Ashtyn Hare, Camren and Evan Herbel and Wyatt Radke, Russell, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Kansas, passed away on July 10, 2022, at home. He was born February 21, 
1951, in Hays, Kansas, to Carroll Smith and Eva (Claycamp) Smith. Ron had
 been in ill health. 

He was a United States Army Veteran, a 
Vietnam Era soldier who served in the Infantry. Throughout his life he 
held several positions throughout the US, most recently with Countryside
 Homes in Hays, Kansas. 

He is survived by his brother, Stanley 
L. Smith of Topeka, Kansas, and a sister, Kathleen Luttrell of 
Centennial, Colorado. He was preceded in death by both parents and a 
sister, Maxine Cain. 

Interment will be at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas; date and time has not been established.

Hannah Abigail Smith, age 19 months, of Winona, passed away, surrounded 
by family, on July 13, 2022, at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, 
Missouri, after an accidental drowning. &nbsp;Hannah was born on December 6, 
2020, in Winona to Sam and Heather (Martin) Smith. Though her time
 with her family was short, she touched many lives. &nbsp;She stole her 
daddy’s heart. Hannah was loved deeply and brought so much joy to those
 around her. She liked to make silly faces, and wrestle with her 
brothers and dad. She loved bath time and when her mom would read her 
stories. Hannah was a very joyful little girl, though if you did 
something she wasn’t okay with, it was written all over her face, 
particularly in her eyes. &nbsp;She enjoyed listening to music with her 
family, especially when they would sing hymns at home or in church. 
&nbsp;Hannah had fun running around church and playing with her friends 
there. Hannah is survived by her parents, Sam and Heather Smith, 
her brothers:&nbsp; Levi, Eli, Andrew, Isaac, and Matthew Smith, all of

 </figure>Hannah Abigail Smith, age 19 months, of Winona, passed away, surrounded 
by family, on July 13, 2022, at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, 
Missouri, after an accidental drowning. &nbsp;Hannah was born on December 6, 
2020, in Winona to Sam and Heather (Martin) Smith. Though her time
 with her family was short, she touched many lives. &nbsp;She stole her 
daddy’s heart. Hannah was loved deeply and brought so much joy to those
 around her. She liked to make silly faces, and wrestle with her 
brothers and dad. She loved bath time and when her mom would read her 
stories. Hannah was a very joyful little girl, though if you did 
something she wasn’t okay with, it was written all over her face, 
particularly in her eyes. &nbsp;She enjoyed listening to music with her 
family, especially when they would sing hymns at home or in church. 
&nbsp;Hannah had fun running around church and playing with her friends 
there. Hannah is survived by her parents, Sam and Heather Smith, 
her brothers:&nbsp; Levi, Eli, Andrew, Isaac, and Matthew Smith, all of

Hannah Abigail Smith

Ida Marie Crider Luse, 89, passed away July 17, 2022, at the 
University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on 
June 30, 1933, in Phillipsburg to Raymond &amp; Gladys (Runion) Crider.
 She married Bert A. Luse, Jr. on January 13, 1957, at St. John’s 
Episcopal Church in Great Bend.&nbsp; He died September 13, 2006.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Ida was the owner and operator 
alongside her husband Bert of Sir Anthony's Bar, Some Other Place 
outdoor dance pavilion and many rentals. She graduated from Phillipsburg
 High School, received her Master's degree from Kansas Wesleyan 
University in Salina and her Bachelor's degree from Kansas State 
Teacher's College in Emporia. She taught music in Pawnee Rock and Great 
Bend schools, as well as 3rd grade at Riley Elementary. Ida enjoyed collecting antiques, traveling, playing bingo and gambling.

Survivors include, a cousin, Arleen Whittaker of Great Bend and her 
two daughters, Sheryl Butler and Michelle Benoit and their families; and
 her faithful caregiver, Richard Stanley. She was preceded in death by 
her parents; her husband, Bert Luse, Jr.; and daughter, Diana Rae 
Scheuerman.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and 
graveside services will be held at a later date. 

Memorials have been 
designated to Dreams, Inc., in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Ida Marie Crider Luse

Bob passed away on May 31, 2022, after a brief but fiercely fought battle with cancer. He was 83 years old.

Bob was born in Hays, Kansas, on 
Christmas Day 1938. He was the first-born son of Gerard Joseph Schreiner
 and Marjorie Eleanor Schreiner. He is survived by Beth, his beloved 
wife of 56 years: children Robert, Laura, and Julia; daughter-in-law, 
Diane, and son-in-law, Brian; grandchildren Colton, Emily, Katherine, 
Kristen, Andrew, Zachary, and Tyson; sisters Patricia, Barbara, and 
Carol; brother-in-law, Wendy, and sister-in-law Marilyn; and many other 
members of a big, loving, loud, and boisterous family that now misses 
him dearly.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother 
Donald.

By any measure, Bob lived an 
extraordinary life. Growing up in Hays, Bob worked on his parents’ farm 
and later at the motel that they briefly owned. Bob also worked for his 
father’s small construction company, where he learned expert masonry and
 carpentry skills. Always an athlete, Bob played football, basketball, 
and baseball for his high school, St. Joseph’s Military Academy, and 
basketball and baseball in college at Benedictine College. &nbsp;Baseball was
 always his first love. &nbsp;In his youth, he played for the Hays Larks for 
several years and then he signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization 
and briefly played in their minor league farm system. &nbsp;As a teenager, he
 studied for the priesthood for two years at the seminary in Victoria, 
Kansas, but his love of sports caused him to give up that calling.&nbsp; 
After retirement, he enjoyed many years as a member of the Northern 
Virginia Senior Softball league, serving a term as president.

&nbsp;After graduating from Fort Hays State 
University, he applied to work at the Central Intelligence Agency.&nbsp; 
While he waited several months for his background investigation to be 
completed, Bob worked as a bricklayer in Arlington– helping build 
multiple buildings. Because of his aptitude with languages, the Agency 
initially hired Bob as a linguist, teaching him Polish from scratch. 
Soon, however, Bob moved over to the office where he would spend the 
rest of his career – the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS).&nbsp; 
He served overseas in Austria, England, and Thailand. He completed a 
course of study at the National War College in Washington, DC. He 
finished his career serving as Director of FBIS for 5 years.&nbsp; Upon his 
retirement in February 1996, after 33 years of government service, he 
was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the National 
Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal.

Bob and Beth continued to travel 
extensively in their retirement years, visiting dozens of countries in 
North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Africa,
 Asia, and Oceania. Bob’s final official tally of different countries to
 which he had traveled was 105. As Bob often said, “Not bad for a farm 
boy from Kansas.”

Bob wrote and published two books. The 
first book, Portrait of a Kansas Family – The Schreiners of Hays, was a 
meticulously researched history of his own family’s history and 
genealogy. His second book, From Kansas to Kenya – an Uncommon Road for 
Wine Lovers, was a memoir of his international travels, focusing on the 
many wine regions of the world to which he had traveled in his lifetime.
 He also kept detailed, witty journals of his many travels, and those 
journals are now treasured family mementos.

A lifelong sports fan, Bob was an 
ardent supporter of his beloved Boston Red Sox, although he found room 
in his heart to also cheer for local teams, the Washington Nationals and
 Baltimore Orioles. Similarly, a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan, Bob 
also cheered for the Washington Redskins – and whoever happened to be 
playing against the Dallas Cowboys.

Bob was fiercely devoted to his family –
 both immediate and extended. After the passing of his own parents, he 
adeptly took on the role of family patriarch. He kept in contact with 
siblings, in-laws, cousins, second-cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, 
nephews, children, and grandchildren – no matter how far-flung the 
family had become. Clearly, his favorite role was that of grandfather, 
and he took obvious joy in watching his grandchildren grow and mature.

A memorial service will be held at St. 
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays on Friday, July 29, at 10:00 am. In 
lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the 
Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).

Wayne 'Bob' Schreiner

James Andrew Carroll, 65, of Colby, Kansas, died July 
10, 2022, at Colby Health and Rehab, Colby, KS. He was born in Blue 
Earth, Minnesota on August 10, 1956, to Richard and Eulalia (Gaddy) 
Carroll. 
James attended school in Elmore, Minnesota and graduated from Elmore 
High School in 1975. He then joined the Navy for 2 years. He returned 
to Minnesota for a short time, then moved to Kansas where he worked for 
Red River Commodities for 18 years as a dedicated employee. 
James met Sara Rogers and they were married on March 26, 2004. In 2006, 
Michelle and Devin Rogers joined their home. He enjoyed taking his 
family to Trenton lake fishing, also traveling to Colorado to go hiking,
 and visit relatives. 
Preceding James in death were his parents Eulalia and Richard Carroll, sister Carol Ann and her husband Virgil Hatfield. 
James will be missed by his wife, Sara of 18 years; brothers, Richard 
(Mona) Carroll, of Blue Earth, MN, and William (Mary) Carroll, of 
Janesville, MN; sisters, Darlene (Harold) Hatfield and Rose Hatfield, 
all of Levant, KS and Patsy (Tom) Matthews of Winfield, KS and many 
relatives and friends.
