Terry Dean Tennyson, 72, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022, 
with complications from dementia. He was surrounded by music, singing and the love of his family.

Terry was born September 30, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, to Phillip and 
Verla Tennyson. Terry graduated from Plainville High School and attended
 college at Fort Hays State University as well as Brown Mackie College.

Terry was united in marriage to Melanie (Voelzke) on September 3rd, 
1971, in Salina, Kansas. Terry and Melanie were blessed by three 
children; Travis, Tricia, and Tracie.

In 1974, Terry began working for Beechcraft in Salina before 
transferring to the Wichita plant in 1988, at which time the family 
relocated to Augusta. Terry worked there for 40 years before retiring. 
Terry loved playing the bass guitar and did so the majority of his life.
 Terry played in many bands through the years including Justice, Freed, 
and The Matt Engels Band, just to name a few.

Music was Terry’s passion, and his five grandchildren were his pride.
 If you wanted to see Terry’s eyes light up, talking to him about his 
family would do just that.

Terry is survived by his wife Melanie and their children Travis 
Tennyson of Augusta, Tricia and husband Eric Brown of Augusta, and 
Tracie Tennyson and wife Ashlie Krieger of Eau Claire, Michigan. 
Grandchildren include Easton, Ericson, and Emmett Brown (Tricia), and 
Vaughn and Vivian Tennyson (Travis). Terry is also survived by his 
siblings Kathy Brown (Phil Schultz) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Deb Rice 
(Mike) of Wichita, and Randy Tennyson (Pam) of Augusta, as well as 
nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at FlutterBye Ranch 
between Augusta and Leon on Sunday, September 25th, from 2:00pm to 
4:00pm, come and go.

Larry D. Ries, 84, died Sunday, September 11, 2022, at Ness County 
Hospital, Ness City, KS.&nbsp; He was born on July 18, 1938, in Ness City, 
the son of Emil and Rachel (Wittig) Ries.&nbsp; He graduated from Bazine High
 School in 1956.&nbsp; He joined the US Army in 1957 until 1959 and was 
stationed in Seoul, Korea during the Korean War.

He married Josephine Falcon on August 17, 1963, at St. Luke’s 
Lutheran Church in Bazine, KS.&nbsp; They moved to Dodge City where he worked
 for Pepsi Cola. Later they owned Trail Street Tavern and Wyatt Earp 
Hotel in the 1960’s.&nbsp; They moved to Denver where he worked at Montgomery
 Wards, then owned House of TV’s.

He moved his family back to Ness City in 1983 and owned Balloon’s 
West Restaurant.&nbsp; In 1985, they owned the Cozy Tavern and enjoyed making
 people laugh for 24 years. He loved to travel to Estes Park and 
spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Josephine; sons: Wayne 
(Marilyn) Ries of Casa Grande, AZ; Sean (Erin) Ries of Ness City; 
daughter: Jolene (Steven) Morgan of LaCrosse; grandchildren: Nicholas 
Ries, Paige (Todd) Waye, Taylor and Hunter Morgan; step grandchildren: 
Katie (Brandon) and Alden; and step great granddaughter, Olivia; and 
many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; 
in-laws: Pedro and Margaret Falcon; sisters in law: Mary Alvarez and 
Gloria Falcon; and brother in law Frankie Falcon.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, 10:30
 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City followed by burial and 
military rites in the Bazine Cemetery.&nbsp; Viewing will be at the funeral 
home on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present
 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Memorial contribution may be given in lieu of flowers to the Bazine 
American Legion Post 392 or the Veterans Memorial and Part, Ness City.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and was a US Army Veteran. Pete was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Remi, Troy Jr “Bud”, Millard, and Charles McAfee and two sisters, Mary Eakins and Diane “Diny” McAfee. Sue Meyer Beeson.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a 
truck driver for B&amp;H Paving in Scott City, Kansas.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas, and the United Rebel Sprint Car Series.

Survivors include his Mother - Connie Beeson of Hutchinson, Kansas, 
One Sister - Jill &amp; Lance Tucker of Scott City, Kansas, Two Nephews -
 Zachary Tucker of Seffner, Florida, Theron Tucker of Oakley, Kansas, 
One Niece - Gabriella Tucker of Scott City, Kansas, Aunt &amp; Uncle -

Donald H. Burton, 97, of Russell,&nbsp;Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at&nbsp;Main Street Manor of Russell.

Donald was born June 2, 1925, in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;He&nbsp;was the son of Harold N. and Helen M. (Truan) Burton. &nbsp;They lived&nbsp;in Hays&nbsp;and moved to Russell when he started school. &nbsp;He graduated from Russell High School in 1943.

Donald served his country in the U.S. Army Air&nbsp;Corp from 1943 to 1945. He was a&nbsp;Bombardier&nbsp;Navigator and a Flying&nbsp;Warrant&nbsp;Officer.&nbsp;&nbsp;After&nbsp;his tour of&nbsp;duty, he returned to Kansas and attended Kansas University School of Pharmacy&nbsp;from which he graduated in 1952.

Donald was united in marriage to&nbsp;Jaclyn Louise Lewis on August 29, 1949, in Russell. &nbsp;This union was blessed with a son, Hal. &nbsp;They lived in Russell for a few years before moving to Beloit, Kansas in 1955. &nbsp;Then&nbsp;in 1959, they moved to Great Bend,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;In 1967, they purchased a pharmacy in Russell&nbsp;and operated Burton Pharmacy until its closing in 1990.

Donald was a Pharmacist&nbsp;in Russell, Beloit&nbsp;and Great Bend.&nbsp;In his later career&nbsp;he served as a reliefpharmacist in a dozen&nbsp;Central and Western&nbsp;Kansas towns.&nbsp;He received an Award for over 60&nbsp;years in Pharmacy from the Kansas Board of Pharmacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;enjoyed collecting&nbsp;jazz&nbsp;records, tending his flowergarden and working&nbsp;and carving&nbsp;of wood.

Donald’s surviving family include his son, Hal Burton of Russell, Kansas; sisters, Helen Lynn&nbsp;Coyle of Georgetown, Texas and Cynthia Burton&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;of Georgetown, Texas; two&nbsp;nieces&nbsp;and five nephews.

Donald&nbsp;was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jaclyn&nbsp;on&nbsp;January 26, 2021, and&nbsp;sisters, Patricia Hower and Beverly Maupin.

Celebration of Life and Musical Tribute for Donald will be held at&nbsp;11&nbsp;A.M. on Wednesday, September 14, 2022,&nbsp;at the&nbsp;Deines Cultural Center of Russell. &nbsp;Cremation has been selected by the family and burial ofashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. &nbsp;Family will be&nbsp;present to&nbsp;greet friends from&nbsp;10 A.M.&nbsp;to&nbsp;service time. &nbsp;Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Joshua Alan Douglass, 44, died of sudden illness September 6, 2022, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. 
He was born August 8, 1978, at Denver General Hospital in Denver, 
Colorado. He was adopted in 1981, along with his Sister Cyndi Douglass,
 by Darlene Epperson Douglass and Lorenzo L. (Doug) Douglass from Adams’
 County Department of Social Services. 
Joshua graduated from Wichita County High School in May of 1999 and was 
slowly transitioned to services provided by SDSI and eventually Mosaic 
of Garden City, KS, where the family was assisted in seeing Joshua had 
everything he needed to establish a full productive life of his 
choosing. 
In addition to the death of his adoptive Mother Darlene when he was 
five, Joshua was preceded in death by his Grandparents Lloyd L. 
Douglass, Ray and Velda Epperson, and an Uncles, Ron Epperson and Tony 
Epperson. 
Survivors include his Father, Doug Douglass, Cleveland, Oklahoma, his 
Stepmother Charla Douglass, Garden City, and his Grandmother Veda 
Douglass, Firth, Nebraska, along with his Step-Grandparents Harley and 
Mary Ellen Foulks of Garden City. 
Joshua is also survived by his Sister Cyndi Douglass of Emporia, KS, his
 Half-Sister Amanda Douglass of Thornton, Colorado, and his Step-Sister 
Karie Roth and Step-Brother Matthew Koster, both of Holcomb, Kansas, and
 many Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews. 
Of very special mention is his beloved Mosaic Host Home Provider, 
Kathleen Stahlecker, of Garden City, KS, who lovingly took time to get 
to know Joshua at Mosaic and helped Mosaic transition him in to her home
 where she provided full time care and love for him the last three and a
 half years of his life. 
Joshua led a full life and enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, flying, four 
wheeling, motorcycle riding, animals and his ongoing love of learning, 
which included adaptive American Sign Language for communication. 
A Memorial Service celebrating Joshua’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, 
Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, 
KS.

Karie Roth and Step-Brother Matthew Koster, both of Holcomb, Kansas, and
 many Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews. 
Of very special mention is his beloved Mosaic Host Home Provider, 
Kathleen Stahlecker, of Garden City, KS, who lovingly took time to get 
to know Joshua at Mosaic and helped Mosaic transition him in to her home
 where she provided full time care and love for him the last three and a
 half years of his life. 
Joshua led a full life and enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, flying, four 
wheeling, motorcycle riding, animals and his ongoing love of learning, 
which included adaptive American Sign Language for communication. 
A Memorial Service celebrating Joshua’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, 
Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, 
KS.

Annette Schoenthaler, 82, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on Friday, 
September 9, 2022 in Wichita. Annette was born the daughter of Clemens 
and Firmina Bittel on January 27, 1940, in Hays, Kansas. Annette and 
Robert Schoenthaler were united in marriage on April 18, 1959, in Ellis, 
Kansas. Annette was very active in charity work, especially in the 
Assistance League for Operation School Bell in Wichita. She enjoyed 
painting, animals, canning, cooking, attending musical performances and 
especially spending time with grandchildren.

She was preceded in 
death by her parents, husband, grandson, Kyle Leach. Survivors include 
her children; Stephanie (Bruce) Leach, Robbie Jack, Jeff (Kam)

Annette Schoenthaler

Dean I. McMurry was born in Greeley, Colorado, January 29, 1935, to 
Irvin J. McMurry and Helen K. (Walling) McMurry. He passed away 
September 10, 2022, in Norton, KS at the age of 87.

Dean attended 
schools in Greeley, graduating from Greeley High School. He married Ruby
 Scott and to that union four children, Steve, Kevin, Lynn, and Pat were
 born.

He served in the US Army for two years during the Korean 
Conflict and was stationed at Ft. Ord in Monterey, California. After his
 military service, the family returned to Greeley. Dean accepted 
employment with Hested Stores Company, becoming a store manager. This 
job took the family to Denver, Ogallala, NE, McCook, NE, Oakley, KS, and
 Norton. In 1968, they became the owners of Rainbow Lanes for nine 
years. Dean then became the Advertising Manager for the Norton Telegram.

When
 the couple separated, he moved back to Colorado. In time, he married 
Suzanne (Bruning) Parson of Boulder and they continued to live in 
Boulder. One of the joys of his life was having a cabin at Grand Lake, 
Colorado and having family come to visit.

He was an avid trap shooter, winning many shoots, and returned to Kansas often for pheasant hunting and to visit family.

Dean
 was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; parents, and maternal 
grandparents. He is survived by his four children; brother, Jerry 
(Janet) McMurry, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, 
nephews, and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 
held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at the funeral home. 
Visitation will be from 12 noon before the service. Burial will be at 
Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder, Colorado.

Craig Wayne Holmes

Betty Jane Huschka, former Great Bend resident, retired registered 
nurse, and homemaker, passed away September 9, 2022, at the age of 98, 
in Derby, Kan. She was born July 11, 1924, to Carl J. and Elizabeth 
Seitz Orth in Hays, Kan.

Betty attended parochial schools in Hays. A senior in high school, 
she enrolled in the American Red Cross Nursing Assistant program and 
received her certificate to aid in the war effort. She graduated from 
Girls’ Catholic High School in Hays in 1942 and was awarded the Bausch 
and Lomb Honorary Science Award for Excellent Students. After 
graduation, she was employed at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays as a 
nurse’s aid for one year before entering St. Rose Hospital School of 
Nursing in Great Bend, Kan. in 1943. In 1946, she graduated, receiving 
her nursing degree and her registered nurse license.

On February 21, 1946, Betty met the love of her life, Norman J. 
Huschka of Ellinwood, Kan., who had returned home from serving in World 
War II as an American Air Force Flight Engineer on a B-26 Bomber and 
former Prisoner of War in occupied Germany. Norman and Betty were 
engaged on February 21, 1947, and were married on May 27, 1947, at St. 
Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, Kan. Norman preceded her in death on 
February 21, 1997, on the 51st anniversary of their meeting.

Betty nursed for many years at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend and 
for Dr. Marlin W. Carlson of Ellinwood, Kan. Betty was a member of St. 
Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, Altar Society, and the 
Eucharistic prayer hour. She was a life member of the American Prisoners
 of War Organization. After 61 years in Great Bend, Betty moved to 
Derby, Kan., for health reasons in 2015.

Survivors include three sons, Kurt (Janna) of Hutchinson, Kan., Glen 
(Nicki) of Pflugerville, Tex., and Kris (Lisa) of San Antonio, Tex.; a 
daughter, Gail (Max) Ferguson of Derby, Kan.; six grandchildren, Clint 
Huschka, Daniel Ferguson, Bonnie Cole, Ali Rae Ferguson-Rangel, Amanda 
Davis, Kennedy Huschka; six great-grandchildren, Lily Ashlyn Huschka, 
Savannah Grace Huschka, Melita Noel Huschka, Zoey Quinn Cole, Mila Rae 
Rangel, Leo Eugene Ferguson; a sister, Carol (Kenneth) Diehl of 
Roseville, Cali.; and extended family, Mark and Michelle Rondeau, Brad 
and Sarah Shirer, Ron and Tammy Mason, and Ron and Becky Draney. She is 
preceded in eternity by her husband; parents; four brothers, two 
infants, Marvin (Amy), and Kenneth (Virginia) Orth; a sister, Martha 
(Ed) Schulte; and a nephew, Kenneth Diehl, Jr.

Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, 
September 15, 2022, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m., all at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. 
on Friday, September 16, 2022, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, in 
Great Bend, Kan. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Betty Jane Huschka

Lifelong Burlington, Colorado, resident Randy Ray Phillips, 64, passed
 away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 8, 2022, in Wallace County, 
Kansas.

Randy was born on March 8, 1958, in Burlington, Colorado, to Raymond 
and Evelyn (Livengood) Phillips.&nbsp; He was one of 3 children.&nbsp; He attended
 school in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1977.

During Randy’s childhood he grew up doing 4-H and accomplished his 
biggest goal winning the Tri-State Royal showing his steer.&nbsp; He loved 
playing baseball and wrestling.&nbsp; Randy was an onery little boy! He had 
to tease everyone, throwing snowballs at the bus, skipped school and 
playing in the trees all day were just a few of the onery things Randy 
grew up enjoying so much.

On February 24, 1980, Randy married Vicki Lynn Abbey in Las Vegas, 
Nevada.&nbsp; To this union, two children Brad and Brian were born.

Randy had a love for farming.&nbsp; He farmed for most of his life and 
drove combine for harvest for 49 years.&nbsp; In his free time, his most 
favorite things to do was to go hunting and fishing. Taking and watching
 his children during their sporting events was another passion of 
Randy’s. Later in life, Randy loved spending his time with his two 
granddaughters.&nbsp; Teaching Devin how to shoot her gun, getting the 
go-cart and dirt bike ready for the girls to ride when they came to the 
farm, taking them for drives around the country and to the Kanorado 
playground.&nbsp; Being with them was something he looked forward to!&nbsp; Randy 
was also a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church.&nbsp; He liked 
his Sunday’s going to church service and taking Vicki out to lunch, then
 taking his afternoon nap.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his son Brian Phillips and a sister Karon Phillips.

He is survived by his wife Vicki of the home near Burlington, his son
 Brad (Tess) Phillips of Burlington, his two grandchildren Devin and 
Tatum Phillips of Burlington, his sister Sharon (Allan) Pralle of 
Burlington, Colorado and his mother-in-law Pat Abbey of Oberlin, Kansas,
 as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Simon Joseph Schippers, 39, passed away at his home in El Dorado on August 27, 2022. Simon was born on April 15, 1983, in Hays, Kansas, to Charla Shipley and Gerald Schippers. Simon
 has two sons, Shiloh Lucas Schippers and Silas Eli Schippers. Simon 
loved his job at Caravan Carpet and Tile. He was always there to help 
his sisters with advice on any remodeling projects they had. Simon loved
 his sons and spending time with them. He had a love for music and when 
he could, he enjoyed getting his grandpa, Gerald Shipley to play his 
violin. He tried to learn how to play different instruments. Some of his
 favorite things in life were Fourth of July, playing darts, shooting 
pool and bowling, especially when he could enjoy these things with his 
sons. He was proud of his Stargazer Lilies as they grew 7 feet tall and 
loaded with blooms and he helped Shiloh with his gourd garden. Simon was
 always willing to help his family and friends. He is loved and will be 
missed. Simon is survived by his sons, Shiloh and Silas; his mother,
 Charla Shipley; his father, Gerald Schippers (Darlene); sisters, Susan 
Meyer (Brad) and Sarah McKee (Jake); step brother, Scott Stirnkorb;

 an accident. Jean attended and graduated from Granada Hill High School.
 After high school, Jean moved to Colorado Spring, Colorado to attend 
Blair Business College. She graduated with a Paralegal Degree. Jean was 
married and widowed twice. She had two sons. She met David Michael 
Langness in 1989 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They were united in 
marriage December 1, 1999, at the Assembly of God Church, Colorado 
Springs. Jean and Dave worked in Colorado Springs until 2011 when they 
moved to Hoxie, Kansas.

Jean and Dave moved to Hoxie to
 care for their young granddaughter when her father had surgery and 
during his recovery time. Jean and Dave fell in love with Hoxie, Kansas 
and decided to make it their permanent home. They eventually went to 
work for Wes and Casey Bainter. For a time, Jean was the cook at 
Sheridan Estates while Dave was the repair person. Their jobs changed 
and evolved over time.

Jean was a great cook as well as
 a baker who loved to design and bake beautiful cakes. She loved talking
 with and entertaining friends and family. Jean had a deep faith and 
loved her Lord and Savior with all her heart. Jean’s family was 
especially important and love of her life. She was very enthusiastic 
about helping families with missing children and was a member of the 
National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Jean
 is survived by her husband, David M. Langness of Hoxie, Kansas; 
children,&nbsp; Robert Rahier of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Gerald Rahier of
 Hoxie, Kansas, Craig Langness and Colleen Gagliardi; sisters, Toni of 
Moorehead, California, Terry and Carol of Gardnerville, Nevada; 
grandchildren, Molly Rahier, Tyler Truelson (Kathryn), Hayley Langness, 
Chloe Langness, Troy Gagliardi, J.D. Langness, Gerald Rahier and Jett 
Rahier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Cyreitha Barbish, and sisters, twin sister, Joan, Bonnie, and Connie.

A
 service is planned for a later date. The family suggests memorials to

Jean Katherine (Barbish) Langness

David Werth, 82, of Bullhead City, Arizona, peacefully passed away on August 20, 2022.&nbsp;

He was born December 10, 1939, in 
Schoenchen, Kansas, the son of Anastas and Anna (Jacobs) Werth. &nbsp;As a 
teenager, David moved from Schoenchen to La Crosse, Kansas, where he 
worked as an auto body repairman. &nbsp;In September of 1961, he married 
Barbara Vanderbur, and together they had four children: Monica, 
Mitchell, Michael, and Monte. &nbsp;In 1966, the family relocated to Salina, 
Kansas. &nbsp;David was hired at Warta Buick as an auto body repairman, then 
moved into sales, and over time became the general manager of Warta 
Buick. &nbsp;Still in Salina, David changed careers in the mid '70s. &nbsp;He 
began to build custom homes, formed Werth Inc., and developed an 
apartment complex and condominiums.&nbsp;

In May of 1986, he married Rita Hassell
 in Aruba, and together they had a son: Matthew.&nbsp; While living in Aruba,
 David sold timeshare at Playa Linda and they built a home. &nbsp;The 
mornings were spent walking on the beach and enjoying the island 
climate. &nbsp;In 1993, they moved to Florida where he was a self-employed 
entrepreneur.&nbsp; In 1996, they moved to Bullhead City, Arizona where David
 went back to his roots and got his auto auction license and started 
restoring cars for resell.&nbsp; In 2005, they moved to Kingman, Arizona, 
built a custom home essentially by themselves, and would live there for 
the next 13 years. &nbsp;In 2018, they made their final move back to Bullhead
 City and built their retirement home.&nbsp; David was a man of many 
talents.&nbsp; In retirement, David and Rita continued to stay busy turning 
motorcycles into trikes, restoring boats, cars, golf carts and RV’s for 
resell.&nbsp; His hobbies included dancing, playing cards, puzzles, and 
watching sports.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Rita of 
Bullhead City, AZ, a daughter: Monica Stephenson and husband Kevin of 
Broken Arrow, OK, four sons: Mitchell Werth and wife Dawn Yarbrough of 
Broken Arrow, OK, Michael Werth and wife Alice of Philadelphia, PA, 
Monte Werth of Salina, and Matthew Werth and wife Samantha of Loveland, 
CO, two sisters: Annabelle McMillan and Norma Jean Jacobs, both of Fort 
Collins, CO, his mother-in-law, numerous brothers and sisters-in law, 
nieces, and nephews of Aruba, eight grandchildren: Nikki, Jason, Alex, 
Kressley, Katie, Mason, Mikayla, and Kaleb, and eight 
great-grandchildren: Jadon, Bryson, Camdon, Dixon, Sutton, Makai, and 
twins Rylan and Logan.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, siblings: Hedwig “Hattie” Degenhardt, Georgine “Jean” 
Freighberger, Julius Werth, Marvin “Whitey” Werth, Doris Amerin, Elsie 
Werth, and Thelma Rowdan, and his father-in law.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
9:00 AM on Thursday September 15, 2022, at St. Anthony Catholic Church,

David Werth

Amber Marie Sponsel, 38, of Colby, KS and Seward, AK, died Wednesday 
September 7th, 2022, at The Medical Center of Aurora, in Aurora, CO. She
 was born April 5, 1984, in Goodland, KS, to Thomas and Mary Jane 
Sponsel. She graduated from Goodland High School in 2002 and the 
Colorado School of Healing Arts, for Massage Therapy in 2005. Amber went
 on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of
 Alaska, Anchorage, in 2020. She worked as a Registered Nurse Resident 
in the Cardiovascular Step-Down Unit at Alaska Regional Hospital. 
She was preceded in death by her Grandparents, Xavier and Lela Stegeman 
and Christopher and Myrtle Sponsel; father Thomas L Sponsel, and 
brother-in-law Henry L. Elling 
She is survived by her mother Mary Jane Sponsel, of Edson; brothers, 
Todd (Wanda) Sponsel, of McPherson, KS and Bradley (Lisa) Sponsel, of 
Austin, TX; sisters, Natalie Konstadinidis, of Woodstock, GA, Teresa 
Jorns, of Vail, CO and Sonia (Darin) Snyder, of Colby, KS, along with 
numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all of who 
loved her beyond measure. 
Amber was a kind and generous soul, with an amazing heart. She could 
bring a smile to anyone's face, or brighten their day, with her wit, and
 beautiful smile. She was a free spirit that loved the outdoors, 
traveling, exploring, her family, friends, and her dog Charlie Brown. 
She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known and 
loved her.

Virginia “Ginny” Mae Sallee, 94, passed away September 7, 2022, at Hospice House Hutchinson, KS.

She was born April 14, 1928, in rural Pawnee County, the daughter of Eli and Celia Weber Skelton.

She was raised in Larned where she graduated high school. Upon 
graduation she worked for the telephone company as a switchboard 
operator. She spent a period of time working as a dental receptionist in
 Great Bend where she was a resident for over 50 years. In her later 
years she devoted her time to volunteering at the Barton County Museum. 
She greatly enjoyed baking and could expertly design a holiday table.&nbsp; 
The family relied heavily on Ginny when organizing family gatherings.&nbsp; 
She was an excellent hostess who always made sure that her guests had a 
good time. She spent her final years at Pleasant View Home in Inman 
where she was loved by many.

On July 7, 1949, she married Norman Dean Sallee and together they had three children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Pete, Bob, 
Glenn, Russell, and Leo Skelton; four sisters, Erma Skelton, Verna 
Moorehead, Zesper Franz and Maxine Nelms; one nephew Dennis Franz; one 
son-in-law Neil Sternberg.

Survivors include: sons, Kenton Sallee (Donna), Inman; and Jeff 
Sallee (Leah), Valencia, California; one daughter, Deanne Sternberg, 
Fallbrook, California; six grandchildren, Eric Ireland, Amy Sallee, Katy
 Price, Drew Sternberg, Tyler Sternberg, and Lindsay Hoffberg; numerous 
great grandchildren.

There will be no services and a graveside memorial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorial contributions be made 
in Virginia’s name to the Inman Public Library in care of Beckwith

Frank Leroy Frost

Karon Litzenberger, 76, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at St 
Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on February 7, 1946, in
 Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of Clifton &amp; Ova Imogene (Mitchell) 
Jackson. She married Verle Litzenberger on July 28, 1973, in Hooker, 
Oklahoma. 
Karon graduated from Hooker High School with the Class of 1964. She 
then earned her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Panhandle
 State University and a Masters degree in education from Southwestern 
Oklahoma State University. She moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1967 
and began her teaching career, where she taught 3rd grade at Alta Brown 
School and 2nd grade at Florence Wilson School for a total of 41 years. 
 She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Searchers 
Sunday School Class. She enjoyed playing bridge at the Finney County 
Senior Center, walking, gardening and being involved with her 
grandchildren. 
She is survived by her Husband- Verle Litzenberger, 2 daughters- Amy 
(Duane) Friedly of Shawnee and Laura (Seth) Patrick of Garden City, 
brother, George Jackson of Las Cruces, New Mexico, a twin sister- Sharon
 (Gary) Gregory of Goodland and 3 grandchildren- Jaxson Friedly, Madelyn
 Friedly and Abigail Patrick. She was preceded in death by her parents 
and grandson- Ryan Allan Patrick. 
Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM Monday at Garnand Funeral Home with 
Rev Joel Plisek officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in 
Garden City.

 </figure>Karon Litzenberger, 76, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at St 
Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on February 7, 1946, in
 Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of Clifton &amp; Ova Imogene (Mitchell) 
Jackson. She married Verle Litzenberger on July 28, 1973, in Hooker, 
Oklahoma. 
Karon graduated from Hooker High School with the Class of 1964. She 
then earned her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Panhandle
 State University and a Masters degree in education from Southwestern 
Oklahoma State University. She moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1967 
and began her teaching career, where she taught 3rd grade at Alta Brown 
School and 2nd grade at Florence Wilson School for a total of 41 years. 
 She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Searchers 
Sunday School Class. She enjoyed playing bridge at the Finney County 
Senior Center, walking, gardening and being involved with her 
grandchildren.

Karon Litzenberger

Allan Cecil Newkirk, 90, passed away September 7, 2022, at the 
University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was born 
January 26, 1932, at Elk City, Kan., to Archibald &amp; Virginia 
(Conkright) Newkirk. He married Dolores Annette Wyman on July 31, 1955. 
She died on October 29, 2014. He then married Connie (Dodd) Banion on 
June 18, 2015. She died July 19, 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Formerly of Havana, Independence, Elk City and Kinsley, Allan was a 
recent Great Bend resident. He was a heavy equipment operator for the 
Kansas Department of Transportation for over 30 years, retiring in 1992.
 Allan was a lifelong active member of the Assembly of God Church, 
currently attending Encounter Church (formerly First Assembly of God), 
Great Bend. He was also a long time member of the First Assembly of God 
Church, Independence. Allan loved to hunt, fish and camp, especially 
traveling to Estes Park, Colo. He was a veteran of the United States 
Navy having served during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include, two sons, Delane Newkirk and his wife Teressa of 
Lyons and Bruce Newkirk and his wife Sharla of Orange Park, Fla.; a 
daughter, Stephannie Zorn and her husband Gary of Ellinwood; a sister, 
Maryanne Broyles of El Dorado; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-two 
great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives,
 Dolores Wyman Newkirk and Connie Banion Newkirk; a brother, James 
Newkirk; and a sister, Sarah Ross.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Memorial 
services will be Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at First 
Assembly of God, Independence, with Pastor Robert “Bo” Bryant and Pastor
 Dwight Dozier presiding.&nbsp; A private family inurnment will be held at 
Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City.&nbsp;

Allan Cecil Newkirk

Michael Joseph Thayer, 64, died on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Spring Hill Care &amp; Rehabilitation Center in Spring Hill. He was born on October 19, 1957, at Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Jerry E. &amp; Peg (Degan) Thayer.

Michael graduated from Liberal High School with the Class of 1976. He moved to Lakin and worked at Lakin Automotive Supply until 2004 when he became a self employed IT and computer person. In 2015, he became a jailer for the Kearny County Sheriff Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting and his gun collection.

He is survived by his 3 Sons- Jeff Thayer of Dodge City, Andy &amp; Brittney Thayer of Hays and Gilbert &amp; Heather Thayer of Spring Hill, Brother- Sean &amp; Ronell Thayer of Garden City, Sister- Nan &amp; Steve Kartsonis of Tuscson, Arizona, 5 Grandchildren-Jocelyn, Myles, Bowen, Easton &amp; Scottie. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Step-Father- Gilbert Phlieger and 2 Brothers- Jeffrey Thayer and David Thayer.

Michael Joseph Thayer

Gerald C. “Jerry” Kreutzer, 87, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Jerry was born March 21, 1935, in Liebenthal, Kansas, the son of Marcus and Cecilia (Legleiter) Kreutzer.  He was a lifelong Rush County, Kansas, resident.  He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Liebenthal, Kansas, and  Schoenchen High School, Schoenchen, Kansas.

Over the years, Jerry worked for John Weitzel Manufacturing; Phillip Weitzel; Jim’s Champlin Service Station (Jim Herrman); Humburg’s; and the Rush County Nursing Home, all of La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Jerry enjoyed being outdoors.  Gardening, and mowing his yard were his favorite outdoor pastimes.  He also enjoyed reading.

On May 25, 1959, he married Neoma Spicka at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.

Survivors include:  his wife, Neoma Kreutzer, La Crosse, Kansas; his son, Thomas “Tom” Kreutzer, La Crosse, Kansas; his granddaughter, Alisha Kreutzer, La Crosse, Kansas; his sister, Mary Virginia Schaffer, New Mexico; and his  buddy, Sparky, his dog.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Timothy “Tim” Kreutzer; one brother, Francis Kreutzer; three sisters, Rose Zimmer, Melezina Allen, and Bernadette Augustine; and one infant sister, Mary Virginia Kreutzer.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 11, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. 

Visitation will also be Monday, September 12, 2022, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Ruth Mary (Borman) Nation, 100, of Atwood, passed away August 24, 2022, 
in Atwood. She was born December 30, 1921, in Berryton, Kansas, to 
Michael Henry and Martha (Fink) Borman. Ruth attended the Bird City, KS 
grade school until the 8th grade.


When Ruth’s sister Gertrude graduated, in 1942, they left for California
 to work at the McDonnell Douglass airplane factory during the war. 
After the war, Ruth became an instructor at a sewing factory. Later she 
worked at an upholstery business making greyhound and school bus seats. 
She retired at the age of 66 and moved to Isabella Lake, CA. She enjoyed
 gardening and had peach, pear, and apricot trees. 


Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Martha; siblings,
 Esther Ammeman, of New Jersey, Helen Coram, of California, Jake Borman,
 of California, Henry Borman, of Bird City, KS, Freda Osgood, of Los 
Angeles, CA, Gertrude Richardson, of Fallbrook, CA, Leroy Borman, of 
Lima, OH, Edwin Borman, of Indianapolis, IN and Estella Austin, of 
Goodland, KS.


She is survived by her sister Martha Anderson; nephew Larry (Meghan) 
Anderson, and their boys Andrew, Erik and Ian Anderson and niece Linda 
Anderson, all of Atwood, along with many more nephews and nieces.


Private family inurnment took place at the Swedish Baptist Cemetery, 
east of Atwood. A Celebration of life will be held at a later date at
