Susan Shupe, 78, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at her home in Lane 
County. She was born on July 3, 1944, in Barton County the daughter of 
George Adam &amp; Christine Catherine (Stremel) Hejny. She married Boyd
 A. Shupe on June 1, 1963, at Olmitz. 
Susan grew up in rural Barton County and graduated from Hoisington High 
School in 1962. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband moved to
 Lane County. She worked many jobs in the area including a nurse aide, 
Calico Apron Café, Dighton Bowl and Prime Pork. She enjoyed embroidery,
 sewing, baking, growing flowers and house plants. She was a vendor at 
Farmer’s Markets where she sold products from her large garden, bee 
hives and eggs. 
Susan was a member of St Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton where she 
was very active in the Altar Society, serving many funeral dinners and 
was a former Regent in the Daughters Of Isabella and was a Religious 
Education Teacher. She was a 4-H Project Leader and was proud of being a
 blood donor of over 13 gallons. 
She is survived by her Husband- Boyd Shupe, 6 Daughters- Leona 
Kuntzelman of Puerto Morelos, Mexico, Malinda &amp; Shane Greene of 
Tomah, Wisconsin, Michelle Shupe of Dighton, Lisa &amp; Aaron Conine of 
Dighton, Melissa Shupe &amp; Steve Gormley of Grinnell and Janie &amp; 
Chris Howard of Ulysses, Son- Arden Shupe of Scott City, 3 Brothers- 
George &amp; Dixie Hejny of Great Bend, Don &amp; Roberta Hejny of La 
Mesa, California and Leonard Hejny of Gorham, 3 Sisters- Esther 
Tattershall of Fruita, Colorado, Alice &amp; Max Copple of Miltonvale 
and Helen &amp; Richard Ackerman of Concordia, Missouri, 18 
Grandchildren and 17 Great-Grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by her Parents and 2 Brothers- Edward Hejny and Ralph Hejny. 
Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Tuesday and Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM 
Wednesday both at St Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton with Rev Warren 
Stecklein and Rev Don Bedore as Celebrants. Burial will be in Dighton 
Memorial Cemetery.

Billie Margaret (Kathka) Bryan passed away on August 30, 2022, at 
Decatur County Hospital at the age of 97. She was born December 14, 
1924, to Paul and Ethel (Oswalt) Kathka in Oberlin, Kansas.

Billie
 graduated from DCHS in 1943. She was united in marriage to Dale Bryan 
on June 13, 1943, in Atwood, Kansas. They made their home on a farm in 
Rawlins County where they raised their four children. Billie &amp; Dale 
farmed until 1950. During the 1960s, they owned and operated the Vickers
 Station in Oberlin. She also worked at Ootons Drapery shop from 1968 to
 1972. She was an excellent seamstress and made a lot of her family’s 
clothing including her daughters’ wedding dresses and prom formals.

Survivors
 include her daughters: Elaine Leatherman of Hutchinson KS, Donna (Roy) 
Donner of McCook, NE; daughters-in-law: Leanna Bryan of Oberlin, KS and 
Connie (John) Simonsson Oberlin of KS; sister-in-law Betty (Milton) 
Slaybaugh of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, 
and great-great grandchildren.

Billie was preceded by in death by

Harold Allen Tubbs, 63, of Colby, died Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 
Citizens Medical Center, Colby. He was born on August 15, 1959, to 
Robert and Caroline (Prokop) Tubbs at St. Thomas Hospital, in Colby. 

Allen, as he was known to his friends and family, grew up on a farm 
north of Levant and attended Brewster Schools before graduating from 
Colby High School. He moved to Ocala, Florida in the '80s and worked as a
 heavy equipment operator burying telecommunication lines. Allen moved 
back to Colby in the '90s but loved Florida and aways wanted to go back 
to visit. Upon his return to Colby, Allen took up plumbing. This became 
his main profession, but he was really a “jack of all trades," working 
for several different companies and on his own. Allen was a kind man, 
who would have done anything to help anyone. He especially loved his 
dogs. 
On August 24, 2018, Allen married Karen Lynn Adair and gained six stepchildren and ten step-grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Harold and Elma 
Tubbs and Cyprian and Antoniette Prokop; sister Peggy Phillips and niece
 Sara Phillips. 
He is survived by his wife Karen; sister Kathy (Rick) Homan, of Grove, 
OK; brothers, Dennis (Robin) Tubbs, of Colby, KS and Justin (Angela) 
Tubbs, of Plainfield, IL; along with several nephews, nieces, great 
nieces and great nephews. 
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 9,

Harold Allen Tubbs

Dorothy Irene (Burnett) Martin, age 88, passed away on August 30, 
2022, at the Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune, Kansas. She 
was born on August 24, 1934, in Towner, Colorado, to Charlie and Mildred 
(Corr) Burnett.

Dorothy was a member of the Tribune community since 1948, having 
moved from Towner, Colorado. She was a member of the Tribune Assembly of
 God church and a devoted homemaker. She occupied her time with 
quilling, crafting, sewing, working on puzzles and filling in coloring 
books. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On June 15, 1952, Dorothy married Lawrence Martin at the Assembly of 
God church in Tribune. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before he 
passed away on September 1, 2012.

Survivors include their children Peggy &amp; Larry Loop of Park City,
 Kansas, Greg &amp; Ruth Martin of Blue Rapids, Kansas, her grandsons 
Jeff Loop of Haven, Kansas, Daniel Loop of Haven, Kansas, Brent &amp; 
Megan Martin of Waterville, Kansas, Blake &amp; Tif Martin of 
Waterville, Kansas, her sister Lonnie Holmes of Tribune, Kansas, and ten
 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her husband, her parents, her sisters Marie Butler, and Louise Myers.

Hospital in Dighton. She was born on February 3, 1921, in Lane County 
the daughter of Delmar &amp; Lena (Bobb) Durr. She married Max N. 
Stanley on November 4, 1939, at Dighton. He died on August 24, 2010,&nbsp; after 69 years of marriage. 
Ellen May was raised with the other “Durr Girls” on the family farm near
 Alamota and later raised her family in the same home. She graduated 
from Lane County High School and after raising her 6 children went back 
to school and earned her degrees from Garden City Community College and 
Fort Hays State University. She authored a number of books about Lane 
County history and wrote the 100 year news for the Dighton Herald for 
many years. 
She was a very active of the United Methodist Church and also belonged 
to the Lane County Historical Society. She was involved with the Kansas
 Democratic Party and worked tirelessly as a member of Kansans Against 
the Vietnam War. She served as the 1990 Kansas State Historical Society
 President. Her special interest was following her children’s education
 and sports activities and in later years following the Kansas City 
Royals. 
She is survived by 3 Daughters- Ann Epps of Denver, Colorado, Janet 
Horsky of Lansing and Gail &amp; Merv Peck of Freemont, Nebraska, Son- 
Neal &amp; Deanne Stanley of Dighton, Sister- Lee Speer of Wichita, 7 
Grandsons and 14 Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 
Parents, Husband, Son- Ken Stanley, Daughter- Mary Ellen Kettlewell, 
Son-In-Laws- Roger Horsky and John Epps, Sisters- Lorene Stormont, Ila

Jeffrey James “Jeff” Hertel, age 60, of Victoria, Kansas, died Tuesday, &nbsp;August 30, 2022, at his home.

He was born September 17, 1961, at Hays, Kansas, to Clarence and Rosemary (Maurath) Hertel.

He owned and operated Victoria City Motors Company and was the former 
owner of Victoria City Liquor.&nbsp; Jeff grew up in Victoria and was a 1979 
Graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; He was a member of The Basilica of 
St. Fidelis, the Munjor 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 
11492, the Victoria 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus, President 
of the Victoria Housing Authority, and a board member of the Cathedral 
of The Plains Charitable Fund, Inc.

Survivors include his daughter, Brittney Lorson and Chad Lorson, both of Hope, KS; his
 grandchildren, Brighton Paul Lorson; Brixton James Lorson; Bristol Ann 
Lorson; &nbsp;his special friend, Kimberly Smith, Walker, KS; his sisters, 
Cindy Mason, Hays, KS; Maxine Moser and Ray Milojevich, Tigard, OR; his

Sheryl
 Lynne (Allison) Smith, 71, of Buhler, Kansas, passed on August 28, 
2022. Sheryl was born on June 26, 1951, in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp; She was first 
chair clarinet in the Pride of Lyons Marching Band and valedictorian of 
the graduating class of 1969.&nbsp; 

She followed her passions to Fort Hays 
State University where she marched with the Tiger Marching Band and 
majored in art education.&nbsp; Here she met a handsome economics major, Rick
 Smith.&nbsp; They met in art class when Rick claimed he needed help drawing 
some birds. Rick and Sheryl were married August 10, 1973.&nbsp; This union 
was blessed with three children: daughter Tara Goans and husband Lonnie 
of Buhler, KS, daughter Mindy Fry and husband Andrew of Shawnee, KS, and
 son Brett Smith and wife Julie of Buhler, KS.

Sheryl
 began her teaching career at Eureka Jr. Sr. High School where she 
taught art for 7 years.&nbsp; The family moved in 1992 to Buhler, Kansas 
where Sheryl began teaching art for the elementary students at USD #313 
and later moved to Buhler High School where she finished her teaching 
career in 2015.&nbsp; She was called to teach again for 2 more years at 
Prairie Hills and loved teaching middle school, even in retirement.&nbsp; 
Sheryl was also an adjunct professor at Sterling College, helping out 
with their art education program.

In
 addition to the many lives she touched through her teaching career, 
Sheryl continued to bless others with her music.&nbsp; She played the 
organ/piano for the Christian and Congregational Church (Eureka), First 
United Methodist Church (Hutchinson), and Emanuel Lutheran Church 
(Hutchinson). She also accompanied many students with state vocal 
competitions as well as assisting her children and grandchildren with 
music lessons.

Sheryl
 was loved tremendously by her family, her students and friends.&nbsp; She 
was always the first to help those in need. From donating supplies to 
classrooms, offering home cooked meals, or just being a listening ear, 
Sheryl was always quick to uplift her friends and family both in person 
and on Facebook, where she loved catching up with just about everyone.&nbsp; 
She enjoyed creating art and planned and hosted summer art camps for 
children with the Buhler Recreation Department.&nbsp; She loved her soap 
opera, The Young and the Restless, reading, and just having her entire 
family together.&nbsp; She also loved her medical shows while sharing her 
expertise with her family who called often needing medical advice!&nbsp; Most
 importantly, she loved the Lord and was faithful all her years on this 
earth.&nbsp; She was always proud that as a child she won a special perfect 
attendance pin each year in Sunday school.&nbsp;

Sheryl
 is survived by her husband Rick Smith of Buhler, daughter Tara Lynne 
Goans (Lonnie), daughter Mindy Lea Fry (Andrew), son Brett Ryan Smith 
(Julie), grandchildren Colton, Allison and Ty Goans, Mason Fry and 
Bellatrix Smith, brother Craig Allison (Nancy) of Salina, and sister 
Chelle Cox (Rick) of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Bonnie (Crowl) Allison, and granddaughter Tayllor Paige Goans.&nbsp;

Sheryl Lynne (Allison) Smith

Mary Anne Mull passed away on August 26, 2022.

She was born in Great Bend, Kan., to Lloyd and Margaret Merten on April
 2, 1929. She went to a one-room school near their farm by Heizer, Kan.,&nbsp; until moving to a farm west of Great Bend. Mary Anne graduated from 
Great Bend High School in 1947, then attended Lindenwood College and 
Barton County Community College.

In 1948, she married Carles L. Mull at First Congregational United 
Church. They lived on a farm north of Pawnee Rock, Kan., for twenty-one 
years before moving to Great Bend, Kan.

Mary Anne was a member of First Congregational United Church for 
seventy years, where she was a devoted volunteer. She was a farm wife 
and a homemaker. She worked part-time for Gibson Hallmark, and the Best 
Western Hotel. She volunteered at the Central Kansas Medical Center gift
 shop for many years. She moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2015 to be
 near her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mull; parents, Lloyd and Margaret Merten; one brother, and four sisters.

Mary Anne is survived by her daughter, Emily (Joe) Ferri of Colorado 
Springs, Colo.; two sons, Robert W. Mull of Seattle, Wash., and David L.
 (Sandy) Mull of Great Bend, Kan.; one grandson, Marcus Mull; two step 
grandsons, Mark and Justin Ferri; and four step great-grandchildren, 
Colin, Nora, Elizabeth and Ethan.

Leona JoAnn Boggs, 89, Hays, died Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at HaysMed, surrounded by family.

She was born May 12, 1933, in Norton County, Kansas, the daughter of William Henry and Nancy (Spencer) Roe. She was a 1951 graduate of&nbsp;Norcatur&nbsp;High School. On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Lewis Dean Boggs in Norton, and they celebrated over 65 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on September 11, 2016. JoAnn was a member of Hays First United Methodist Church and the church quilting group. Her hobbies included gardening, crafting, and woodworking, and she was a wonderful cook, known for baking delicious bread and homemade rolls. Her family thought of her as a great teacher who passed her wisdom on to them.

Survivors include her three sons: Randolph “Randy” Boggs and wife Karen Dreiling of Hays, Barry Boggs and wife Patti of Kinsley, Steven Boggs and wife Kathy of Schoenchen, a daughter: Deanna&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;and husband David of Hays, a brother:&nbsp;Jarrold&nbsp;Roe of Derby, two sisters: Phyllis LaSalle of Oberlin and Linda Henry of Atwood, five grandchildren: Trevor Boggs and wife&nbsp;LaRee, Derick Boggs and wife Diane, Randee Olive, Sara Branham&nbsp;and husband Carlos, and Lacy Boggs,&nbsp;ten&nbsp;great grandchildren: Austin Boggs and wife&nbsp;Chase, Andrew Boggs, Tristan Olive, Teixeira Olive, Braeden Boggs,&nbsp;Trexynn&nbsp;Olive,&nbsp;Kyndall&nbsp;Branham, Ellie Branham, Kinsley Boggs,&nbsp;and Jaelyn Sweet,&nbsp;and a great-great grandson:&nbsp;Kallen&nbsp;Tate Boggs.

Leona JoAnn Boggs

Janice Reeder was born in WaKeeney, Kansas, in November 1933, to Monte
 and Inez Poague, who would later become the most cherished and loving 
grandparents ever.&nbsp;

The youngest of four, Jan delighted in pranking and teasing her older
 siblings who, no doubt, paved the way in the high-jinks department. 
That sense of humor and fun-loving spirit stayed with her to the end. 
She passed away in her sleep, August 28, 2022, in WaKeeney.

Jan always had a song in her heart and would bust out an A capella 
rendition to even elevator muzak, often to the chagrin of her teenage 
children.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you ever heard someone singing in the produce aisle at 
IGA, there was a good chance it was Jan. I’m pretty sure Mom had us all 
singing before we learned to talk.

She and her husband of more than 65 years, Daryl C. Reeder, provided a
 loving home filled with music and laughter.&nbsp;&nbsp;All of us kids learned an 
instrument, all of us sang.&nbsp;&nbsp;There wasn’t a family get together without 
music. And we can all still hear her shout a correction from the kitchen
 for a sour note hit during piano practice in the living room.&nbsp;

Together, Jan and Daryl raised five kids on a shoestring budget — one
 daughter, four sons (Mom affectionately called them “The Brothers”), 
and instilled in them a deep love of family, music, books, good food, 
and games.&nbsp;&nbsp;Family get togethers always included music, food, and 
DingBat, a family card game.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jan was a cut-throat card player, and 
despite her sweet, little, old lady appearance would take your 
ace-high-trump, trick and gleefully cackle about it.

Mom was a great cook, although you would never hear that from 
her.&nbsp;&nbsp;And ‘The Brothers’ still salivate over her sheet-pan chocolate 
cake, and I would give anything for some of her fried chicken and mashed
 potatoes and gravy. There was always room for one more at the dinner 
table with Mom.&nbsp;

Jan attended Emporia State Teachers College before marrying Daryl in 
April 1953.&nbsp;&nbsp;Like her mother before her, Jan worked as a librarian at 
the WaKeeney City Library, and it became a defacto second home to all of
 us.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a life-long member of The First Presbyterian Church of 
WaKeeney and sang in the choir, a member of Harmony Club, Bridge Club, 
Literary Club, and later also worked at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp;

She will be greatly missed by her children, Mona, Michael, James, and
 Curtis, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was 
predeceased by her husband, Daryl, her son John Reeder, grandson Sean 
Reeder, and granddaughter Hannah Reeder.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, September 2, 2022, 
at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery of WaKeeney.&nbsp;&nbsp;Arrangements pending 
Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp;

And Here Comes Betty! Betty was born April 17, 1931, to Helen and Jerome Younger, who were German immigrants from the Volga River region of Russia. Betty attended Ellis High School and soon married the ridiculously handsome Eugene Adair Herl in 1948 after he returned from service during WWII. With gorgeous black hair and brown eyes, this head-turning war veteran was no match for Betty’s heart. Betty was no slouch either– she was a “real looker.” She was always dressed to the nines and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a pair of sweatpants while shopping at Walmartzzz (how she forever and appropriately pronounced it). Saw the Beauty in Everything It was common to be with Betty and watch her good nature, kindness and infectious laugh rub off on everyone. She would often tell cashiers what beautiful hair they have and continue with questions as to how they fixed it. The hospice nurses who took care of Betty toward the end of her life faced a potential territory change where they could lose Betty and they fought like hell to keep her as their patient. Her pulmonologist had a secret crush on her, and she once told her eye doctor that she had a great rack. It was the easiest thing to love and laugh with Betty. Never Minced Words with Her Family On the other hand, Betty was world renowned for telling her family members like it is. You could be one bad haircut away from getting a full critique. She was a master of telling you your outfit wasn’t up to snuff and yet you were grateful for her candor. “I can and will do better” was the mantra each family member would walk away with. And even though it sounds like she may have been hard on her family, she exercised the same kind of assessment of herself. She held those around her and herself to the highest standard and made us all better for it. Is that Roast or Beef Jerky? Betty was a master chef in the kitchen. Her cucumber salad, cottage cheese salad, tuna burgers, galewskis, dumplings &amp; green beans, canned pickles and homemade pies were to die for.&nbsp; However, she had one weakness, and that was over cooking a roast. If left unattended because of farm wife duties, that piece of meat became hard to distinguish between shoe leather or beef jerky, but we ate it anyways because us kids did not know any different and she never let us down otherwise. Betty Sure Knew Her Wrestling Moves Any spectator of a sporting event with a Herl kid involved was worth the price of admission just to watch Betty. When her son Mitchell was wrestling for the state title, she channeled her extra energy on Mitchell’s opponent. She unknowingly grabbed her nearby daughter Michelle and placed her into a full nelson on the spot while Mitchell simultaneously pinned his opponent. It was epic! It was entertaining! It was full-on Betty! Creative Extraordinaire Betty was a master seamstress. She made all her daughter’s clothes and made much of her own. She had exquisite taste and the juxtaposition of Betty in a Vogue outfit against the backdrop of the Western Kansas plains is unforgettable. Betty was skilled at drawing and painting but abandoned the pursuit of a college degree in Art after the loss of her children Stephen (5 years) and Becky (3 years). She shifted her energy into raising her family and taught herself how to crochet and later quilting, which led to the creation of hundreds of items. Voracious Reader and News Junkie Betty was obsessed with reading everything she could get her hands on. She would read books authored by Ann Coulter who is a right-wing conservative media pundit. On the other extreme, she would read Michael Moore who is an author and left-wing activist. If asked why she would read such a wide spectrum, she would always say, “You need to understand each side to have a healthy, intelligent debate.” Betty loved the invention of the 24-hour cable news cycle. Whaat! Whaat! Whaat! Betty started losing her hearing in her mid-50s. We thought she was purposely ignoring us but unfortunately some bad Younger hearing genes, as well as the exposure to Big Band music and loud farming equipment did those ear drums in. To be around mom, would mean exposing your own ear drums to crushingly loud decibels of sound. None of us cared though, because we all knew that losing your hearing can be one of the most isolating things to happen. She loved good conversation and all genres of music, so this loss was real. However, she always kept the most positive attitude and was optimistic about each and every day. One of Betty’s most famous lines was, “Don’t Always Take Yourself So Seriously.” To say Betty will be sorely missed is an understatement. Betty is pre-deceased by her husband Eugene Adair Herl. She is survived by children Jay Herl and wife Kristy of Shawnee Kansas; Jacqueline Lindstrom and husband John of Maplewood, New Jersey; Mitch Herl and wife Linda of South Jordan, Utah; Michelle Herl of Leawood, Kansas; E.G. Herl and wife Stephanie of Overland Park, Kansas. She has 2 deceased children Stephen and Rebecca Herl. Betty is also survived by 12 grandchildren who were the center of her world: Katy Herl Cassaw, Becky Herl, Nick Herl, Carly Rhodes, Austin Herl, Jena Lindstrom, John Luke Lindstrom, Jake Herl, Ty Herl, Jackson Bunte, Henry Bunte, Maxwell Bunte; and five great grandchildren under the age of 12; Mikhail, Paisley, Bailey, Piper and Reidun born the following day of Betty’s death! Richard A. Cramer, age 83 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, and formerly of Hill City, Kansas, passed away on Friday morning, August 26, 2022, at the University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend Campus.&nbsp; 

Richard was born on February 22, 1939, at Omaha, Nebraska, to Donald T. and Elinor A. (Sprieck) Cramer.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Mary L. Kreuzburg on June 17, 1962, at Hiawatha, Kansas.&nbsp; Richard was a U.S. Army veteran, and worked as City Manager for the city of Hiawatha for two years and then as City Manager for the city of Hill City for 14 years.&nbsp; He was also a self-employed auctioneer, and did many benefit auctions over the years. Richard had served as Chairman of the Little Britches Rodeo and also the Jayhawker Roundup Rodeo in Hill City for many years.&nbsp; He was a 60-year member of Hiawatha Masonic Lodge #35 A.F. &amp; A.M. at Hiawatha and a member of the First Christian Church at Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Cramer of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:&nbsp; Troy (&amp; Dawn) Cramer of Salina, Kansas and Travis L. (&amp; Janae) Cramer of Bennington, Kansas; one daughter, Tiffany (&amp; Taylor) Jones of Manhattan, Kansas; seven grandchildren:&nbsp; Taylor, Jacob, and Trevor Cramer, McKenzie and Malory Cramer, Levi and Hunter Jones.&nbsp; Richard was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Cramer.

Roger Anschutz, age 79, of Hays, 
Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2022, in Hays. He was born 
January 7, 1943, in Russell, Kansas, to Henry Anschutz and Edna (Wittman) 
Anschutz. During the Bolsheviks Revolution, Roger’s dad, Henry, traveled 
with family from Russia through Poland to Germany. They departed for 
America from Frankfurt, Germany, on board the Sierra Ventana. They arrived
 at Ellis Island on August 15, 1924. Henry talked about working and 
living in Chicago for a period and eventually the family mostly settled 
in the Dorrance, Bunker Hill, Wilson area. He married Cynthia Werth on 
August 20, 1971, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

He attended Navy Hospital CORSP School 
and Hospital Medical Service School, stationed on a hospital Navy ship 
in Sigonella Sicily during the Vietnam War.

He attended Fort Hays State University 
and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He worked for many
 years at Hadley Regional Medical Center, now Hays Medical Center in 
various positions including Hospital OR Nursing Scrub Tech, Circulating 
Nurse, OR Supervisor and later Supervisor of Outpatient Surgical 
Services.&nbsp;

Roger enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, golfing, bird watching, but mostly spending time with his children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia, 
daughters; Sarah Nicks (Tim), Melissa Donaldson (Brent), son, Creighton 
Anschutz, Grandchildren; Tanner Nicks (Haley), Cole Nicks, Meyer 
Donaldson, Averine Donaldson; Great Grandchildren; Layden and Reign 
Nicks, and a brother, Ronald Anschutz (Pam). He was preceded in death by

Roger Anschutz

Jeannine Marie Ross (Jean) passed away August 24, 2022, at Hays Medical Center at the age of 86. She was born November 16, 1935, in Hays, Kansas, to Walter C. and Philomene Frances (Fisher) Ross.

Jean entered the convent when she was 15 years old and was with the Sisters of Saint Agnes for 23 years. During this time, she served as an educator and administrator at several private schools located in the states of Wisconsin and Indiana. After 23 years, she returned to Hays to care for her aging parents.

In Hays, she also continued to serve as an educator: teaching in Schoenchen, KS; Principal at Washington Elementary School, and for 18 years she served in the position of Assistant Superintendent of Finance with USD 489.

Jean earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marian College in Fond De Lac, Wisconsin; her Master’s Degree in Education and her Master’s Degree in Speech were earned at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Administration was earned from Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For 10 years, beginning in 2000, Jean served in the role as President of Thomas More Prep (TMP)-Marian.&nbsp; The Jean Ross Society was created to honor spiritual and dedication to the success of Catholic schools in Hays, KS. She often referred to TMP as “God’s school.” Jean also received the Point of Light award, which is the highest recognition given to individuals who have given time, talent, and resources to the school.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jean is survived by sister, Marilyn Wasinger, Wichita, KS; sister-in-law, Debbie Ross, Hays, KS; brothers-in-law, Ken Pfeifer, Hays, KS, Dan Needy, Tucson, AZ,&nbsp;and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Philomene (Fisher) Ross; sisters, Shirley Schartz, Patricia Needy, Betty Pfeifer, and brother Walter (Chuck) Ross, Jr.

&nbsp;Jean’s family will receive guests from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th&nbsp;Street, Hays, KS on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. A rosary is scheduled for 6:30pm, followed by a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00am, Thursday, September 1, 2022, at St Joseph Church, Father Mike Scully will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, KS.

Verla Joanne (Lindsley) Snowbarger, age 85, of Big Bow, Kansas, died 
August 28, 2022, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses, 
Kansas. She was born on May 13, 1937, in Stanton County, Kansas, the 
daughter of Dorel P. and Evelyn M. (Herrick) Lindsley. 
Joanne grew up in Stanton County and graduated from High School there. 
She then attended Bethany Nazarene College, (now Southern Nazarene 
University), and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home 
Economics. After college she taught Home Economics for two years in 
Agra, Kansas. She married Ronald Snowbarger on September 16, 1961. They
 lived in El Paso, Texas, for a year as Ron finished his military 
service before returning to Stanton County. She taught second grade for
 one year at Big Bow Elementary School before she stopped teaching to 
start a family. She had a great love for her children and made it a 
priority to be at most all the activities that they were involved in. 
She also had a great love for all of her grandchildren and cherished 
each one dearly. 
Joanne was passionate about her gardening and especially enjoyed tending
 her flowerbeds that contained over 500 different varieties of Iris. She
 was a member of the Garden City Iris Club. She also loved doing 
crossword puzzles, collecting clowns and carousel horses. She especially
 loved her cats which brought her great joy. 
She was a member of Bethel Church of the Nazarene where she served in 
many different positions including teaching the young married Sunday 
school class and was on the mission’s council. Joanne loved reading 
Christian literature. Often times she would share some of her favorite 
poetry, prose, and other writings as part of the worship services. 
For the last ten years she struggled greatly against the dementia that 
tried to rob her of her spirit. But Joanne fought valiantly all the way 
to the end and was known for her joy, laughter, and care that she 
expressed to everyone as she would say, “I love you – I love you – I 
love you!” 
Survivors include her husband, Ronald of their home; children, Tanya 
Frees of Omro, Wisconsin, Theron Snowbarger and wife Dina, of St. Louis,
 Missouri, Merwyn Snowbarger of Johnson; and Amber Harrell and husband 
Randall of Cedar Park, Texas; brothers, David Lindsley of Tucson, 
Arizona and Dale Lindsley and wife Linda of Hutchinson, Kansas; six 
grandchildren, Christopher Frees, Alyssa Meier and husband Bret, Ashley 
Weaver and husband Brendon, Chance Harrell and wife Staci, Vanessa 
Krause and husband Benjamin, and Phillip Snowbarger, and two 
great-grandchildren, Malakhi and Eliyah Weaver. 
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Dorel and Evelyn Lindsley; son-in-law, Tom Frees; and brother, Charles Lindsley. 
Funeral service will be Friday, September 2, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Bethel 
Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Paul Shellenberger officiating.

Charles Tom “Cactus” Hirst, 88, of Russell, died August 28, 2022, at 
Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson. He was born July 28, 1934, in 
Hutchinson, to Bert and Juanita (Buckhannan) Hirst.

Tom graduated from Partridge High School in 1952. He worked in the 
telephone industry most of his life: 31 years as a technician for 
Western Electric, which later became Southwestern Bell, and 15 years as a
 sub-contractor. Tom loved to head to the woods for shooting rifles, 
fishing, and camping. He enjoyed using his ham and CB radios and 
watching NASCAR races. In 1972, Tom began attending AA and did so 
faithfully for nearly 50 years, allowing him to form many great 
friendships.

On October 22, 1969, he married Joan Ruth Davis. They shared 42 years before her passing on February 15, 2015.

Tom is survived by: sons, Theodore “Ted” Hirst, Hays, William “Bill” 
Hirst, Hutchinson, Ronald “Ron” Hirst (Tracy), Ark City; step-daughter, 
Marsha Harrington, Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren; and four 
great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Bert and Nita Hirst; wife, Joan Hirst; and brothers, Bill, Eugene, and James Hirst.

Memorial service will be 10:30 am Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 
Elliott Mortuary. A private burial will take place in Partridge 
Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Thursday and 
Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Judith Kathlene “Judy” Windholz, 78, of Salina, Kan., passed away 
Monday, August 29, 2022. She was born June 15, 1944, in Topeka, Kan., to
 Raymond and Martina (Boos) Walters. She married Ernest Windholz on June
 16, 1962, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, Kan.

Judy worked at General Battery/Exide, the Salina Journal, and 
Dillons. She enjoyed her weekly bingo games, volunteering at the Food 
Bank, going to Bogey’s and Sonic, visiting the library several times a 
week, and going to the casino. Judy loved camping, boating, and fishing,
 and spending time with her grandkids.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ernest, of the home; 
sons, Steven (Melissa), of Salina, and Mark (Amy), of Baytown, TX; 
sister, Linda Nolan (Tom), of Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren, Rachael, 
Brandon, Josh, Jake, Sheldon, Jerod, and Cindy; and great-grandchildren,
 Colton, Blake, Bryan, Isabella, Jaxon, Bentley, Jazmine, Charlie, Ivy, 
and Violet.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and son, Brian Windholz.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2022, at Ryan 
Mortuary, Salina, with a vigil service at 5:30. Mass of Christian burial
 will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 3, at St. Mary Queen of the

Carol Sue Idol (Peck)

Janice Wiersma, age 72, Hill City, Kansas, loving mother, and the 
world’s best Nani, passed away peacefully Monday, August 22, 2022, at 
the Graham County Hospital, after being surrounded by her loving family 
over the weekend. She was born February 26, 1950, to Roy and Stella 
Poffenberger, in Miles City, Montana.
 Janice enjoyed cooking and baking. Her family always looked forward 
to meals at her house! Everyone always knew there was going to be more 
food than they could ever eat and that it was all going to be delicious.
 She also enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, and was very 
passionate about her flowers. She could hardly wait for spring to roll 
around each year so she could decorate her yard with stunning 
flowerpots. 
 When Janice wasn’t tending her beloved flowers, she filled her home 
with warmth and kindness. Janice opened a daycare in her home. For 
several years she treasured and spoiled umpteen small children. But 
Janice took the most pleasure in being “Nani”. It was one of the most 
important parts of Janice’s life, a role that gave her much pride and 
joy. 
 Janice is survived by three biological children: Michael (Susie) 
Ramey of Las Vegas, Nevada, Troy (Bridgette) Ramey of Grinnell, and 
Angie (Brett) Garrison of Hill City; three stepchildren: Darin Wiersma 
of Arizona, Anita Wiersma of Kansas City and Jeania (Tom) Eckley of 
Wichita; 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph 
Poffenberger; a sister, Jean Schaak; and several nieces and nephews. 
 Family members that paved the way for Janice include her husband, 
Raymond Wiersma, her parents, Roy and Stella Poffenberger and her sister
 Joan Rusliff. 
 Although Janice was tiny and frail, she gave us all hope and 
reminded us of the preciousness of life. She will be greatly missed by 
all.

Janice Wiersma

Jack D. Richardson, 84, passed away on August 29, 2022, at Integris 
Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born on February 2, 
1938, at Arkansas City, Kansas to Fred &amp; Edith (Sanner) Richardson. 
On March 7, 1957, Jack married Sharolyn “Shari” Rowe in Winfield, Kan. 
She passed on April 14, 2004.

Coming to Great Bend in 1969, Jack worked in the oilfield and truck 
driving for over 40 years for Slawson Drilling and Jack B. Kelley, prior
 to his retirement. The rig hands always talked about the strength of 
his hands. Jack got great satisfaction playing practical jokes on 
everyone. “Grandpa Jack” enjoyed spending time with his grandson and 
great-grandchildren, watching them play sports.

Survivors include a daughter: Vicki Richardson of Great Bend, Kan.; a
 daughter-in-law, Carla Richardson, of Woodward, Okla.; a grandson, Josh
 (Lexi) Richardson, of Edmond, Okla.; three sisters: Margaret, Betty and
 Joan.; two step grandsons, Brandon and Kevin Williams; a step 
granddaughter, PeggySue Brown; and several great-grandchildren. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Shari Richardson; a son, David 
Richardson; three brothers; and two sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 2,

 </figure>Jack D. Richardson, 84, passed away on August 29, 2022, at Integris 
Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born on February 2, 
1938, at Arkansas City, Kansas to Fred &amp; Edith (Sanner) Richardson. 
On March 7, 1957, Jack married Sharolyn “Shari” Rowe in Winfield, Kan. 
She passed on April 14, 2004.Coming to Great Bend in 1969, Jack worked in the oilfield and truck 
driving for over 40 years for Slawson Drilling and Jack B. Kelley, prior
 to his retirement. The rig hands always talked about the strength of 
his hands. Jack got great satisfaction playing practical jokes on 
everyone. “Grandpa Jack” enjoyed spending time with his grandson and 
great-grandchildren, watching them play sports.Survivors include a daughter: Vicki Richardson of Great Bend, Kan.; a
 daughter-in-law, Carla Richardson, of Woodward, Okla.; a grandson, Josh
 (Lexi) Richardson, of Edmond, Okla.; three sisters: Margaret, Betty and
 Joan.; two step grandsons, Brandon and Kevin Williams; a step 
granddaughter, PeggySue Brown; and several great-grandchildren. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Shari Richardson; a son, David 
Richardson; three brothers; and two sisters.Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, 
2022, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Pastor Larry Schumacher
