HANSTON—William Earnest Coleman, 93, passed away Dec. 21, 2022, at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

He was born Nov. 30, 1929, in Mineral Springs, Ark., the son of Robert Jonathan and Cular Barrett Coleman.&nbsp; William served in the United States Army from Feb. 4, 1948, to Sept. 1, 1969, where he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.&nbsp; He moved from Hooks, Texas, to Hanston, 35 years ago, where he was a Civil Service agent and a farmer.

He was a member of the Hanston United Methodist Church and Army Historical Foundation National Museum.

On Nov. 15, 1957, he married Mary Etta Korf at Fort Carson, Colo. She survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Gail A. Coleman, Hanston; sister-in-law, Ada Joyce Coleman, Ark.; brother-in-law, Carrol Wilson, La.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray Coleman, Frank Coleman, Lonzo Coleman; and two sisters, Nona May Wilson and Hattie Lee Hawthorn.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022, at Hanston United Methodist Church with Pastor Peter Mtuamwari and Ron Ruff presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Burial will be at the Hanston Cemetery with military graveside rites.

William Earnest Coleman

Wayne Merle Belden, 82, was born on a farm north of Edmond on Oct. 11, 1940, the oldest child of Merle and Erma Belden. Wayne died on Dec. 28, 2022, in Norton.

When Wayne was 7, the family moved to Edmond where he attended grade school. He was a member of the final graduating class of Edmond High School in 1958. Wayne lived most of his adult life in Norton. On Dec. 27, 1959, he married Erma “Tiny” Gipe at the Norton Christian Church. She preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1996.

Wayne owned and operated many businesses over his working career, including Wayne’s Marina, Belden Shooting Supply, Prairie Trap Club, Belden Construction, Belden Manufacturing, and Microline Products. Wayne loved challenges and always had new ideas for businesses. After retirement, he continued working on boats and motors in his garage, only quitting due to health issues a few months ago.

Wayne was a member of the Norton Christian Church, a lifetime member of the NRA, and member of the Norton Eagles Lodge.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Tiny; his parents: Merle and Erma; his in-laws: Lawrence and Agnes Gipe; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Robert and Dolly Phelps. He is survived by his daughter: Karla Reed (Anthony Pfeifer); son: Kelly Belden; grandson: Brandon Reed (Shea Gibson) and great-granddaughter: Kyli Reed; sisters: Karen Pratt (Bill) and Virginia Minge (Mike), and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. 

Wayne will lie in-state with a book signing from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29 at the funeral home.

Billye
 June (Clark) Yowell was born on July 22, 1935, in Penokee and died 
on Dec. 27, 2022, at her home in Delphos. Billye was the seventh 
child of 10 to John and Margaret Clark. She attended school in Hill 
City graduating in 1953.

In
 1955 Billye married Raymond Miles Yowell Jr. To this union there were 
four children: Debra, Charles (Chuck), Clark (Brad) and Rhonda. The 
family lived on a farm 13 miles north of Ellis and Billye worked at the 
Ellis Co-Op Hardware Store. Billye and Raymond were divorced in 1986.

In 1988, Billye married Dr. Donald Wayne Yowell (Doc) from Delphos. She assisted Doc in his Dental Office up to retirement.

Billye
 was preceded in death by her parents John and Margaret Clark, 
mother-in-law, Doris Yowell, sister, Enid Otis; brothers, Douglas Clark 
(Valta), Charles Clark (Ann), Dwight Clark (Marcene), and Maurice 
(JoAnn) Clark; brother-in-laws, Merle Hilburn and Thomas (Pete) Miller. 
She also was preceded in death by her son, Charles (Chuck) Yowell.

Stephen Basgall, 58, of Hays, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Sept. 17, 1964, in Hays to Leon and Altarena (Windholz) Basgall. He graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1983. On May 4, 1985, he was united in marriage to Virginia (Dreiling) in Hays. Stephen worked for Fort Hays State University starting out in construction and currently at Sternberg Museum as a maintenance technician. Stephen enjoyed restoring and tinkering on older muscle cars with a particular fondness for 1970's Chevelles and El Caminos. As his neighbors would tell you he enjoyed rock -'n'-roll music, and he was happy to visit with all who would stop by.&nbsp; He also enjoyed painting and drywalling, which he learned from his father-in-law, Harry.&nbsp; Stephen was an avid animal lover, particularly dogs, and above all he was a very proud husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Hays; his parents, Leon and Altarena Basgall of Yocemento; his son, Kendrick Basgall and wife Shania and their son, Krew all of Olathe; a daughter, MaRyan Hulvey and husband Nathan and their children, Parker and Airalia all of McPherson; a brother, Keith Basgall and wife Jean of Hays; and a sister, Karen Thornton and husband Shon of Garden City. Stephen Basgall

On Dec. 24 2022, the world lost a beloved mother,
 grand, great-grand and great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and 
friend. Nina Wellmaker, 90 of Lakin, spread her wings and is now in 
the presence of God. 
 She was born to the late William Walker Dillon and Nila (Coulter) 
Dillon on May 12, 1932. Nina was the ninth child in a family of 11 
children. 
 On May 28, 1950, she married the late Joe Wellmaker and began a 
family of six children: Calvin Wellmaker of Lakin, Norma Unruh of 
Shepherdstown, W.V., Larrall Wellmaker (deceased), Troy Wellmaker of 
Kindom, Wyo., Becky (Bill) Brouhard of Andover, and Jimmy Wellmaker 
of Lakin. 
 One of Nina's passions was rock hunting. A passion that was shared 
with many members of her family and friends. Nina could spend hours on 
the top of a wind-swept hill hunting for arrowheads. If she wasn't rock 
hunting, she was either playing golf, bowling or playing cards with her
 Bridge club. 
 Over the years Nina hand-stitched many quilts that are treasured by
 her children and grandchildren. She was a very good artist, and in 2016 
she was the first person to win the annual Barn Quilt Exhibit at the Kansas State Fair. Her quilt is on permanent display at the fairgrounds. 
 Nina worked for Tate Ranch Headquarters as a bookkeeper until her 
retirement in 1997. She was an active member in the Lakin community and a
 much-loved member of the Church of Christ. She donated her time by 
helping out at the Budget Shop and she enjoyed socializing at dinners 
and playing Bingo at the Kearny County Senior Center. 
 Living brothers and sisters include Veda Taylor of Hugoton, 
William Walker Dillon Jr. (Billy) of Walsh, Colo., Darlene Symes of Lakin, Retta Blodgett of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gerald Lynn Dillon of
 Grand Junction, Colo. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren Charla 
Peaks, Nick Wellmaker, Chris Hazelton, Stephanie Hazelton, Heather 
Zaldana, Tamara Rodgers, Tyrell Wellmaker, Andrea Keenan, Corrina 
Guerrero and Jericho Wellmaker; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchidlren.

Preceding her in death are her parents: William 
Walker Dillon and Nila Dillon; three sisters: Marie Houser, Zella 
Westerman and Violet Hickey; and two brothers: RL and Eugene Dillon. 
Her husband of 49 years, Joe Wellmaker died in 1999, and a son, 
Larrall Wellmaker, died in 2015. 
 The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 
2022, at the Lakin United Methodist Church in Lakin with Rev. 
Brian Loy officiating.

Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery.

Nina Wellmaker

GARDEN CITY—Carlos Matthew Urias IV, 30, died on Friday, Dec. 23, 
2022, at his home in Garden City. He was born on June 8, 1992, at Fort 
Hood, Texas, the son of Carlos and Lisa (Sandoval) Urias III. 
Carlos graduated with the class of 2010 from Garden City High School 
where he was involved in football and basketball. He was a server at 
several different restaurants in Garden City and currently was serving

Joe C Garcia died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, at his home in Garden City. He was born July 1, 1947, the son of Pete and Jovita (Cardenas)
 Garcia in Taylor, Texas. He married Susie Rojas on Jan. 2, 1969, in 
Garden City. She preceded him in death in 1991. 
Mr. Garcia grew up in Texas and moved to Kansas in the early 1960’s. He 
was a talented woodworker and carpenter for St Catherine Hospital for 
many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed taking care of and spending 
time with Amanda, his daughter. 
Survivors include his children- Michael J. Garcia, Joseph A (Jan) 
Garcia, Kerry B (Kristine) Garcia, Aaron M (Jennifer) Garcia and Amanda Garcia; grandchildren-Brooklyn, Brittany, Michael, Zachary,

Joe C Garcia

Donna Lea (Connelly) Dible, of Rexford, and 
Bonita Springs, Fla., passed away on Dec. 20, 2022, at her 
residence in Bonita Springs. 
Donna was born in Rexford on April 24, 1935, the youngest child 
of Chester and Martha (Claar) Connelly. She spent her childhood in 
Thomas and Sherman counties, and Sunnyside, Wash., returning to 
Thomas County toward the end of the war in 1943. Donna was a 1953 
graduate of Rexford High School. 
Donna married William (Bill) Dible on July 26, 1953. They lived in 
Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Alabama for the first three years of their 
marriage, while Bill served in the U.S. Army.

For the following three years
 they lived in Wichita, where Bill worked at Boeing Aircraft. They moved
 with their three children to Rexford in May 1959 to farm and raise 
their family. They added two more children to their family, and Donna 
would say having children was the happiest time of her life. 
Donna excelled at all things domestic! She was a fantastic cook, 
a talented seamstress, enjoyed interior decorating, landscaping her sunken
 flower garden, and completing crossword puzzles. Donna played the piano
 and taught her daughters to sing in three-part harmony for church, and 
other performances. She was involved with her children’s activities from
 piano and dance lessons, Pioneer Girls, engineering camp, sports and 
numerous other events with her family. 
Donna fervently read and studied the Bible and attended church at the 
Rexford Community Church, the Worldwide Church of God in Hays, and the 
United Methodist Church in Florida. She served as a Stewardess for the 
Rexford Community Church and sang with the Sweet Adelines in Colby. 
Donna worked for a short time for the NWK Educational Service Center. 
She loved to travel. In the beginning, it was family vacations with five 
kids in a station wagon, later in an RV as snowbirds in Texas, Arizona 
and Florida, to eventually purchasing a home in Florida. Bill and Donna 
also traveled to Mexico, China and Italy. 
Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents, Chester and
 Martha Connelly; her brother LaVerne Connelly; sister Frances Black; 
nephew Mark Black and grandson, Dominic Passantino. 
Donna is survived by children, Robert, Lynn (Mike) Zimmerman, Michelle 
(Lenny) Patmon, Susan (Gary) Pfrang and Anita (Rocky) Passantino; 11 
grandchildren, Nathan (Magdalene), Drew (Amy), and Skylar Zimmerman;

Paula Sue Bixenman, 64, of Colby, died 
Monday, Dec. 26, 2022. She was born July 26, 1958, in Colby, the 
fifth of six children to LeRoy and Lucy (Leiker) Bixenman.

Paula 
attended Sacred Heart School and Colby Public Schools, graduating with 
the class of 1976. She worked as a maid at several area motels before 
becoming disabled. Paula was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
 Colby. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Steve; niece Kim French and brother-in-law Wayne Matthews. 
Paula is survived by her brothers, Mike, Don and Dave, all of Colby;

SMITH CENTER—Jack T. Hunnacutt, 79, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at Jewell County Hospital, Mankato. Jack was born on March 2, 1943, in Reno, Nev., the son of William Curtis and Athol Marie (Booz) Hunnacutt. On Sept. 27, 1963, he married JoAnn M. Rhoades in Smith Center to this union they were blessed with three children, Tracy, Terri and Tyler.

Jack was a United States Navy veteran serving from Dec. 29, 1960, to Jan. 17, 1964, when he was honorably discharged. Jack had been an over-the-road truck driver for 40 years, retiring in 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jack is survived by his wife JoAnn Hunnacutt of Smith Center; two sons, Tracy (Wendy) Hunnacutt of Phillipsburg, Tyler (Susan) Hunnacutt of Salina; a daughter, Terri (Scott) Basom of Salina; a sister, Joann Luntsford of Kingman; three grandchildren, Brittany (Robert) Kerns of Auburn, Maine, Johnathan and Emma Hunnacutt both of Phillipsburg and one great-grandson, Gianni Kerns of Auburn, Maine. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, with Pastor Dennis Lambert officiating.

Jack T. Hunnacutt

Gladys Marie Durand (Depiesse), 86, passed away peacefully on the evening of Dec. 26th, 2022. She was born on Aug. 18, 1936, in the area of Dubuque and Beaver, rural northeast Barton County. She remained on the farm until graduating from Claflin High School in 1954.

Gladys was married on Oct. 10, 1959, to her husband JaDean “Jay” Durand at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Dubuque. They were married for over 63 years. Gladys and Jay had two daughters, Joni Kennedy of Great Bend, and Jacqueline Medina of Longmont, Colo.

Gladys will be remembered as a hard worker who managed her family responsibilities with a positive and caring attitude. She lived her life as a go-getter and loved making fun memories with family and friends. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, working in the garden and going on walks.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Theresa Depiesse (Schremmer) of Redwing, three brothers, LaVerne, Larry, and Marlin “Butch” Depiesse, and one grandchild, Austin Medina.

She is survived by her husband Jay Durand and their two daughters, Joni Kennedy and husband Kurt, and Jacqueline Medina. Also, her sister Geraldine Bieberle and brother Ed Depiesse. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Ryan Kennedy, Natalie Van Horn (Denton), Aimee Cazares (Denton), Brett Kennedy, and Anthony Medina, as well as three great-grandchildren, Claire, Conor, and Chani Kennedy. She cared for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

A funeral Mass will be a 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend.

Gladys Marie Durand (Depiesse)

Arlis G. Koerner, 77, Hays, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2022, at HaysMed surrounded by her family.

She was born July 13, 1945, in Norton, the daughter of Joseph and Leona (Allen) Kaspar. She graduated 
from Jennings High School, from NCK School of Nursing, and was an LPN at
 Hadley Hospital, Red Cross, Via Christi, and the Reed Center.

On July 
13, 1968, she was united in marriage to James F. “Jim” Koerner at St. 
Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Her memberships included St. Joseph 
Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the American Legion 
Auxiliary, and S.O.S.&nbsp; Arlis was a house mother at a local fraternity, 
volunteered at the Arc Thrift Shop, sold Avon, and enjoyed shopping and 
finding garage sale bargains.

Traveling to casinos with her husband was
 a favorite pastime and she loved to visit with friends and family, tend
 to her garden and was an excellent cook.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband Jim of 
the home, a son: Lance Koerner and wife Monique of Hays, a daughter: 
Dana Koerner of Hurley, Mo., a brother: Allan Kaspar and wife June of 
Nixa, Mo., three sisters: Carol Cook of Oklahoma City, Okla., Norma Hahn and
 husband Lou of Craig, Colo., and Joleene Younger and husband Frank of 
Victoria, two grandchildren: Gabriel Koerner and Michael Lowell, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister: Lois Hepner.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with
 Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; 

Inurnment will follow in St. Francis 
Cemetery in Munjor.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 
8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

A Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at

from Jennings High School, from NCK School of Nursing, and was an LPN at
 Hadley Hospital, Red Cross, Via Christi, and the Reed Center.On July 
13, 1968, she was united in marriage to James F. “Jim” Koerner at St. 
Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Her memberships included St. Joseph 
Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the American Legion 
Auxiliary, and S.O.S.&nbsp; Arlis was a house mother at a local fraternity, 
volunteered at the Arc Thrift Shop, sold Avon, and enjoyed shopping and 
finding garage sale bargains.Traveling to casinos with her husband was
 a favorite pastime and she loved to visit with friends and family, tend
 to her garden and was an excellent cook.&nbsp;Survivors include her husband Jim of 
the home, a son: Lance Koerner and wife Monique of Hays, a daughter: 
Dana Koerner of Hurley, Mo., a brother: Allan Kaspar and wife June of 
Nixa, Mo., three sisters: Carol Cook of Oklahoma City, Okla., Norma Hahn and
 husband Lou of Craig, Colo., and Joleene Younger and husband Frank of 
Victoria, two grandchildren: Gabriel Koerner and Michael Lowell, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister: Lois Hepner.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with
 Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in St. Francis 
Cemetery in Munjor.The family will receive friends from 5 to 
8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.A Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at

Arlis G. Koerner

Paul J. Cone was born April 13, 1921, in Fort Scott to George and Grace Cone. He was the second of five boys.

In his early life, the family moved often. Coming to Portis in 1932. He graduated from eighth grade and high school from Portis in 1939.

After his parents left Portis in 1940, he lived with Russ and Grace Wolters, helping with farming and cattle until being called into the military in 1942. He served in the Army until Dec. 31, 1945.

On his release from the military, he returned to Portis to live with Russ and Grace until he purchased his farm in 1950.

In 1950 he married Velma Hammond. They moved to the farm near Harlan in August 1950. To this union were born two children, Nancy L. and Paul R. Cone.

He and his family lived in the Harlan and Portis area until his wife’s death in March 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Grace, his four brothers Frank, Vernon, George and Harold Cone, his wife Velma and many friends.

He is survived by his daughter Nancy and son Paul (Denise) Cone.

Wyatt James Lackey was born on March 3, 1977, in Osborne to Hank and Becky Lackey. He passed away on Dec. 24, 2022, at the age of 45.

Wyatt grew up in Portis spending his time with friends and family dreaming up big ideas. Some were constructive, some were not (like the frog electric chair he invented.) He loved seeing how things worked and taking things apart to study them. He made time for his family but also made it a point to have meaningful time with his friends.

Wyatt attended and graduated from Osborne schools then moved to Beloit to attend school at NCK Technical College in the electronics field. He graduated NCK with a degree in electronics and was quickly swayed by his college professor to take a job overseas in Kwajalein which is part of the Marshall Islands. He was never a huge fan of being that far from home and did migrate closer to Kansas shortly thereafter. He was married for several years and lived in Missouri with his wife and stepchildren, but his heart never left the small-town Portis, Kansas, life. He was able to purchase a house in Portis not far from his family and would live there until the end.

Wyatt lived for his family and friends. He would gladly give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He never held a grudge against anyone and worried about the safety and happiness of others far more than he ever worried about himself.

Wyatt knew his music and his movies. He could verbatim speak every word to multiple movies including "Apollo 13," "The Goonies," "Uncle Buck," "Tommy Boy," "Kung Fu Panda" and so many more. He was an excellent musician on the piano, the guitar and even the occasional slide whistle or cowbell solo. He always knew what would make people laugh. He lived for that.

He was a machinist, a welder, a whiz with electronics and all around a jack of all trades. There wasn’t any problem Wyatt couldn’t find a solution to. Often, it would be far more complicated than it needed to be such as the can crusher that vacuumed the can through a tube across the room landing into the crusher, which activated a cylinder to come down and crush the can and drop it into a trash can. Way more complex than it needed to be, but there was a problem and there was a solution.

He is survived by his parents, Hank and Becky Lackey of Portis; his sister Whitney and husband Brad of Portis; his son, Landon Lackey of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; and two stepsons, Lucas O’Dell of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Logan Onwiler of Raymore, Mo;&nbsp; and a niece and nephew Aydan Dill and Deecon Dill of Portis.

He is preceded in death by Clarence and Marian Lackey (paternal grandparents) and William and Bertina Urban (maternal grandparents).

Wyatt has been cremated per his choice. We will not be having a service at this time but a celebration of life at a later date as I know Wyatt would have preferred that over a funeral home and tears.

Wyatt James Lackey

John Orlando Ross of Hays Kansas, passed away on Dec. 23, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital swing bed unit in La Crosse.

He was born July 9, 1955, in Plainville to Emmett Alvin Ross and Julia Sarah (Smith) Ross. He graduated from Stockton High School and Salina Area Vocational Technical School where he studied electronics.

John worked a variety of jobs, including laying fiber optic lines for AT&amp;T, being a ranch hand, working at the power plant in Stockton, and welding, among others. In his younger years, he loved riding his Harley, hanging out with friends, and attending Grateful Dead concerts. More recently he was an avid gamer, often playing video games into the wee hours of the morning. He continued to enjoy hard rock music.

John is survived by his oldest sister, Olive (Ross) McReynolds, and 11 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four siblings: &nbsp;Emmett Ross Jr., Robert Ross, Jack Ross, and Marla Goodman, as well as one nephew, Jack Ross Jr.

John Orlando Ross

Louis Aloysius Wahlmeier, 82, of Colby, died Monday, Dec. 26, 
2022, at his home. Louis was born Nov. 24, 1940, to Aloysius Louis 
and Credilla Ruth (Spohrer) Wahlmeier in Jennings. He graduated from
 Jennings Rural High School in 1958. He attended college and earned a 
degree in education from Saint Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City 
in 1963. 
Louis was united in the Sacrament of Marriage to Janet Juenemann at the 
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville on Feb. 27, 1965. 
He was a junior high school teacher for 12 years in various towns including
 teaching some classes in the French language. He was a farm laborer for
 25 years with Barton Farms of Colby. He worked at J &amp; J Oil Company
 in Colby for five years running the fuel tank wagon. He rounded out his
 working years working for five years at Orscheln Farm &amp; Home in Colby.
 
Louis was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby. He
 was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 62 years 
serving as the financial secretary for the K of C for 13 years and serving a term as the Grand Knight.

Louis was very strong and devoted to 
his Catholic faith and the Sacraments. He was involved in many aspects 
of the church, including teaching classes in religious education and 
Confirmation, being a Confirmation sponsor for several young adults.

He 
served on the Parish Council, school council and the Diocese of Salina 
Pastoral Council. He was an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, 
Lector and Mass Server for daily Mass for several years.

The one 
ministry that was Louis Wahlmeier was the Rite of Christian Initiation 
of Adults (RCIA). He was a mainstay in this program for 30 years. He 
would walk with and teach men and women who would journey through this 
program wanting to join as full members of the Catholic church. He 
studied and spent hours preparing for the classes and took a real 
interest in the people, their lives and their families. He wanted them to 
learn about the Catholic faith, receive the sacraments and become 
faithful and active members of the church that he loved. 
Louis was a kind, gentle, quiet man with a good sense of humor. He loved
 people and being around others at all kinds of gatherings. He could 
relate with and talk to all ages of people. He earned the respect and 
admiration of all who came into contact with him throughout his life. He
 frequently donated blood and enjoyed gardening, being very meticulous 
with not a weed to be found! 
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Norbert, Vincent, 
Robert, Galen and Paul Wahlmeier; sisters, Loretta Byrne, Virginia 
Bruggeman, Rita Pallante and Sister Frances Cabrini Wahlmeier. 
Louis is survived by his wife, Janet of the home; son, Kevin (Janet) 
Wahlmeier of Raleigh, N.C.; brothers, Hugh (Kay) Wahlmeier of Horseheads, 
N.Y., John (Francia) Wahlemier of San Manuel, Ariz., and Carl (Linda) 
Wahlmeier of Jennings; sisters, Elaine Veach of Nashville, Tenn. and 
Jane (John) Cassidy of Stillwell, Kan.; along with many nephews, nieces 
and a host of friends. 
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Vigil at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.
 28, 2022, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. 
Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby, 
with burial in the church cemetery.

Louis Aloysius Wahlmeier

Dorothy Gottschalk, 86, of Hays, Kansas passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. She was born Dec. 3, 1936, in Antonino to Mike and Mary (Stecklein) Befort. On Aug. 18, 1956, she married Cecil Gottschalk at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2016.

Dorothy worked at Travenol and as a seamstress at Stromgren Supports Inc.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, VFW Auxiliary, the Hays Recreation Commission Fitness Center, Ladies Bowling League at Centennial Lanes and the Fort Hays Golf Course Ladies Association.

Dorothy lived a full and simple life. She loved her faith, family and friends above all. She enjoyed attending daily mass, watching her children and grandchildren play sports along with professional and collegiate teams, playing golf, bowling, doing puzzles, playing trivia and most importantly spending time with her family.

Dorothy is survived by four sons, Gregg Gottschalk (Patricia) of Hays, Chris Gottschalk (Krista) of Hays, Galen Gottschalk of Hays and Troy Gottschalk (April) of Westminster, Colo.; two daughters, Jan Meade (Joe) of The Colony, Texas and Becky Serri (Andy) of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Jim Befort (Esther) of Broomfield, Colo. Grandchildren, TJ (Megan) and Luke (Jess) Gottschalk, Katie (Nate) Burkman, Taylor and Ryan (Mia) Meade, Shayla (Aaron) Ward, Sarah (Garrett) Stoecklein, Alyssa, Haley and MaKenna Gottschalk, Gabe Serri, Jack and Alex Gottschalk. Great-grandchildren, Teagan, Adilyn, Jonah and Remington Gottschalk, Lily and Miles Gottschalk, Emerson and Donovan Burkman, Adilyn and Ella Ward and Baker Stoecklein.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Gottschalk; seven sisters, Ida, Olivia, Sr. Fermina, Esther, Mary, Rose Ann and Helen plus eight brothers, Bill, Albinus, Adam, Bob, Mike Jr., Ralph, George and Harry.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A VFW Auxiliary memorial aervice and Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a parish vigil service.

Lois M. Thompson, 91, La Crosse, passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse.

Lois was born July 16, 1931, in rural Rush County, the daughter of John C. “Jack” and Tenie A. (Leatherbury) Mendenhall.  She was a lifelong resident of Rush County.  A 1949 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, she owned and operated the La Crosse Motel, La Crosse, before her retirement.

Lois enjoyed coin collecting and was a member of the local coin club.

On Sept. 7, 1974, she married Richard A. Cunningham.  He preceded her in death July 17, 1986.  On Nov. 22, 2004, she married G. W. Thompson in La Crosse.  He preceded her in death Feb. 6, 2014.

Survivors include  three sisters, Jeanette Rogers (Walter), McCracken, Barbara Owen, Seward, and Linda Schenk (Daniel), Albert, Kan., a niece, Colette Wittman; numerous nephews and nieces; three step sons, David Thompson, Pratt, Daniel Thompson (Julie), Tonganoxie, and Dennis Thompson (Christine), Lathrop, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Deborah K. Brashier (Larry), Norman, Okla.; step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one brother, Jack Mendenhall; two sisters, Reettia Wittman, and Leona Mendenhall; one sister-in-law, Sharon Mendenhall; and one brother-in-law, Billy Owen.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022, at Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, with Pastor Mark Sizemore officiating. The interment will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center.

Marilynn Louise Ladd, 80, La Crosse, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse.

Marilynn was born May 7, 1942, in Walla Walla, Washington, the daughter of Thomas R. and Genevra (Miller) Thompson.  

She was a resident of Rush County since March 2018, moving from Tennessee.  A 1960 graduate of Walla Walla College Academy, Walla Walla, Wash., she then attended and graduated from Walla Walla College, Walla Walla, Wash., in 1964.  During her working years, she was an executive secretary until retirement.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, La Crosse.

On Aug. 19, 1962, she married Robert R. “Bob” Ladd in Walla Walla, Wash.

Survivors include  her husband, Robert R. “Bob” Ladd, La Crosse, one son, Robert C. Ladd, and his wife, Cindy, La Crosse; one daughter, Linda Cornell, and her husband, Earl, Antioch, Calif.; five grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Thompson, Walla Walla, Wash.; and one sister, Evelyn Grosboll, Derby.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, La Crosse, with Pastor Jonn Grosboll officiating.  A private family inurnment will be in the Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery, Bison, Kan., at a later date.

Carl Michael Yost, 80, of Salina, passed away Saturday, December 24th, 2022.

Carl was born in Goodland, Kansas on September 29, 1942, a son of Louise (Davidson) and Frank Yost.

Carl served in the United States Air Force.

On November 29, 1988, Carl married Phyllis Brown, in Minneapolis, Kansas.

He was a career truck driver and drove for Link Scientific. He drove an MRI machine to the hospitals in Kansas.

Carl and Phyllis developed the Prairie Ridge Housing Development.

Survivors
 include his wife, Phyllis Yost of the home; two sons, Lonnie Brown, of 
Salina, Kansas, Mitch Brown (Rick), of Palm Beach, Florida; adoptive 
children, Joe Yost and Susan Black; 5 grandchildren, and 2 great 
grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Rob Haggarty (Mindy);
 and sister, Jean Heap.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Burton, who passed recently; and 11 other siblings.

Cremation has been chosen and no services are planned at this time.

Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in care the funeral home.

Lora Gallegos-Haynes, 63, of Hays passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, in Hays. She was born June 19, 1959, in Denver.

On Aug. 16, 1986, she married Thomas J. Haynes in Denver. Lora has been a Spanish teacher at Hays High for more than 20 years. Her involvement and passion for her students, church family and the community are widespread.

She was responsible for starting the Hays International Travel Club, which allowed her and her students to travel internationally. Fundraising helped with the travel expenses. Up to two years of countless fundraising could include working concessions, wreath sales, bingo, bake sales and pizza sales. 

Lora and her husband, Thomas, started up and operated Lomato’s Pizza in Hays, which is named after the first two letters of Lora, Marie,and Tom’s names.

Traveling was truly a passion for Lora and amazingly she and Tom had traveled to all 50 states, the lower 48 states by motorcycle. She also enjoyed crafting and crocheting. She was a member of the New Life Center Assembly of God Church in Hays and the NEA.

Lora was a caring soul who was a caregiver to so many. She was an adored teacher, friend and adopted “Grandma” to countless students and people in the community.

Lora is survived by her mother and father, Priscilla and Morris Branch of Bennett, Colo.; husband, Tom of Hays; her daughter, Marie Haynes of Overland Park; stepsons, Tim Haynes of Bison, Kan., and Terry Haynes of Hays; siblings, Morris Branch Jr. of Aurora, Colo., Luana Branch of Bennett, Colo., Larry Branch of Denver, Frank Madrid of Visalia, Calif., and Rebecca Hill of Broomfield, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Talia, Elon, Jazmine, Harley, Kiran, Terrence II, and Juliet as well as eight great-grandchildren, Oliver, Ronan, Tyler, Brooklyn, Razariah, Reviahna, Daunte and Aries.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lorenza and Eloy Gallegos and her siblings, Chana, Larry, Lupe and Lydia.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at Celebration Community Church.

William E. “Bill” Thompson, 83, of Schoenchen, Kansas died Monday, December 19, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born March 11, 1939, in Bristow Oklahoma, the son of Ben and Faye (Blackmore) Thompson. Bill graduated from Codell High School in 1957.&nbsp; He then enlisted in the Navy and served from 1959 to 1969.&nbsp; He boarded the ship USS ST. Paul out of Long Beach, California, while stationed aboard, they escorted President Eisenhower. &nbsp; In August 1963, he was united in marriage to Janice Tinkler, they later divorced.&nbsp; In June 1986 he married Kathy (Munsch) Herrman they were married 36 years.&nbsp; Bill started his working career in the oilfield, owned a backhoe business and a donut shop and went back to oilfield as a service rig operator, driller, floor hand and pumper. He pumped wells for many oil companies, the last to be Kaiser-Francis Oil Company.&nbsp; He was a grain hauler for Schreiner Trucking and Golden Plains Trucking. After retiring from trucking, he then went to work for Hays Area Children Center as a custodian for 12 years, then worked at Dollar Tree as a floor stocker for two years.&nbsp; Bill was a joy to be around, he always had a funny remark on what others said, anyone he knew truly enjoyed and loved him. He always made everyone he saw smile and laugh, especially his sister Loretta. working at McCormick feedlot for 10+ years as a cowboy following his 
roots. Then he continued his cowboy way of life at Plains Feeders in 
Burlington, Colorado until his retirement in 2012 after his wife’s 
passing in 2009. He moved to Dodge City, Kansas, to continue spending 
time with his family and to enjoy his retirement.&nbsp;He enjoyed horseback 
riding, roping everything including deer, and won several team penning 
events in Colorado, showing the true meaning of being a hard-working 
cowboy with excellent work ethic that was later passed on to his family.
 He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City, Kansas.He is survived by his daughter, Maribel and husband Jose Cervantes, 
Dodge City; son, Carlos and wife Veronica Rodriguez, Stratton Co; 4 
grandchildren, Dusty and Lacy Rodriguez, Marienthal Ks; Cynthia, Nohely,
 And Casey Cervantes, Dodge City; Cesar Chaparro and wife Dellanira, 
Greeley Co; Miseal Munoz, Greeley Co; and an adopted granddaughter, 
Karely Miranda, Dodge City; 5 sisters, Petra, Juana, Elvira, Rosario, 
Cruz Rodríguez and one brother, Ramón Rodríguez.Librado was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and 3 siblings.Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at the 
Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 
11:00 am on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at the church with Fr. John 
Stang presiding and Fr. Ted Stoecklein concelebrating. Burial will

Manor of the Plains rodeado de familia.Librado Rodríguez nació el 29 de diciembre de 1939 en San Andrés, 
Chihuahua México. Hijo de Cruz Rodríguez y Marcelina Corral. Se casó con
 su esposa Esperanza Baquera en 1967, donde tuvieron a sus dos hijos 
Maribel y Carlos. Emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1972 para que su 
familia tuviera una vida mejor. Terminó en Stratton, Colorado trabajando
 en McCormick feedlot durante más de 10 años como vaquero siguiendo sus 
raíces. Luego continuó su estilo de vida de vaquero en Plains Feeders en
 Burlington, Colorado hasta su jubilación en 2012 después del 
fallecimiento de su esposa en 2009. Se mudó a Dodge City, KS. para
