Michael A. “Mike” Schmidt, 59, Catharine, died Friday, November 25, 2022, at HaysMed.

He was born October 19, 1963, in Hays 
the son of Emery R. and Shirley (Pfeifer) Schmidt.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1982, he 
graduated from Hays High School and was a lifelong wheat farmer and 
cattleman, member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, and was a member of 
the St. Catherine Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #11687.&nbsp;&nbsp;On 
June 1, 1984, he was united in marriage to Ann L. Nichols in 
Catharine.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mike never new a stranger and loved to spend time visiting 
with friends and family, in addition to numerous interests including 
spending time at the lake, watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, 
and episodes of his favorite TV show, Gunsmoke.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a phenomenal 
cook and griller, loved his family including his dogs, Bruiser and 
Miles, enjoyed butchering beef and pork for his family, and driving his 
Ranger around the farm with his twin grandsons aboard, checking on 
cattle and visiting his neighbors.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Ann, of the 
home, his mother Shirley Schmidt of Catharine, his mother-in-law Carolyn
 Nichols of Hays, a son Michael P. Schmidt of Catharine, two 
daughters:&nbsp;&nbsp;Casey Wendel and husband Nathan of Catharine and Carly 
Schmidt and boyfriend Tyler Boling of Salina, a brother Greg Schmidt and
 wife Pam of Catharine, two sisters:&nbsp;&nbsp;Jackie Jones and husband Tim of 
Hays and Lisa Stouffer and husband Allen of Leavenworth, his 
sister-in-law Courtney Schmeidler of Hays, three grandsons:&nbsp;&nbsp;Tyler, 
Clayton, and Bennett Wendel, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his father Emery Schmidt, and his father-in-law William Nichols.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at St. Catherine Catholic 
Church with Fr. Earl Befort officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in the 
church cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday 
at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time
 on Wednesday at the church.&nbsp;&nbsp;A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm 
on Tuesday, followed by a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all 
at the funeral home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thomas Ray Hammersmith, a gregarious and genuine personality who had 
the ability to instantly connect with others and never met a stranger, 
died November 22, 2022, surrounded by the love of his wife and three 
children, his mother, his siblings and their families, and all of his 
friends. He was 50.

Above all, Tom treasured his family and loved his wife of 17 years, 
Megan, and their three children, Owen, Eli and Anna. Tom and Megan built
 a life together, focused on raising their children in the Catholic 
faith.

Tom was also a devoted son, sibling and uncle.

Tom’s faith was important to him.&nbsp; He was a member of Church of the Holy Cross and the Knights of Columbus.

Having had the challenge of health adversities early in his life, Tom
 was always ready to celebrate the joy of life.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending 
time with his family and his friends.&nbsp; He was up for a celebration 
anywhere at any time, but he particularly enjoyed time spent at the golf
 course, camping at the lake, traveling with his family, vacationing to 
Las Vegas with friends and family, watching football in his shop, 
playing cards and laughing with friends. The light in his shop was 
always left on because Tom was never too busy to welcome the company of 
family and friends.

Tom was born August 5, 1972, in Plainville, to Alfred “Al” and Mary 
(Hammerschmidt) Hammersmith. Tom graduated from Ellinwood High School in
 1991 and received his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State 
University. He was a gifted graphic designer and artist, who had a 
vision for anything creative.&nbsp; Through his work, he had the opportunity 
to use his talents to create custom designs for many local businesses. 
He was also devoted to the family business, joining his father and 
brothers at H&amp;B Petroleum. His varied business talents impacted so 
many.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by: His wife, Megan Gottschalk-Hammersmith and their 
three children, Owen, Eli, and Anna, all of Hutchinson; mother, Mary 
Hammersmith of Hays; siblings, Joe Hammersmith (Karen), Mike Hammersmith
 (Angie), all of Hutchinson, and Sarah Balthazor (Steve) of Hays; 
mother-in-law, Midge Gottschalk of Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Peggy 
Gottschalk-Rust of Hutchinson and Jennifer Lepentis (Bill) of Kansas 
City; brother-in-law, Mike Gottschalk of Minnesota; nieces and nephews, 
Mariah, Morgan, Alex, Becca, and Isaac Hammersmith, Philippe Manga, 
Sophia, Evan, and Lydia Balthazor, Morgan, Lauren, and Joshua Rust, and 
Eleni Lepentis; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Al Hammersmith and father-in-law, Don Gottschalk.

Parish Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2022, with Mass
 of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2022, both at
 Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, with 
Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.&nbsp; Graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. 
at Saint Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to
 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; The family will greet friends 
following the Rosary at the church Tuesday evening.

Gilbert E. “Gil” Ferland, 84, Hays, died Thursday, November 24, 2022, at HaysMed.

He was born September 9, 1938, at home 
in Damar, the son of Euclide and Marie (Benoit) Ferland.&nbsp;&nbsp;For 60 years 
Gil worked in the oilfield, starting out driving the water truck for his
 brother when he was 16.&nbsp;&nbsp;He worked on drilling rigs, cable tool for oil
 and gas wells, and was a pumper.&nbsp;&nbsp;He swathed and bailed for local 
farmers and delivered mail to Nebraska at night.&nbsp;&nbsp;On October 18, 1958, he
 was united in marriage to Doris Pfannenstiel in St. Joseph Catholic 
Church in Hays, and they celebrated 64 years of marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, an avid college football and 
basketball fan, and his hobbies included fishing, whittling wood, 
woodworking, and gardening.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was proud of his grandchildren and great
 grandchildren and loved aggravating and playing with them.

Survivors include his wife Doris of the
 home, two sons: Roger Ferland and wife Betty Hanson and Jeff Ferland 
and wife Pheobe, both of Hays, four daughters: Rosilda Harman and 
husband Rick of Hays, Susan Ferland and Richard Byrne of Hernando, FL, 
Alice Meitl of Lebanon, IN, and Karen Crawford of Hays, a brother: Alcid
 Ferland and wife Carolyn of Hays, four sisters: Ruth Rempe of Scott 
City, Jackie Steckline of Ogallah, Loretta Zweifel and husband Keith of 
Lucas, and Betty Ferland of Russell, 12 grandchildren: Garrett Albers, 
Zach Rupp and wife Tesley, Gilbert Rupp and wife Emily, Clint Rocha and 
wife Gina, Marie Holloman and husband Larry, Aaron Crawford and wife 
Taylor, Audrey Dougherty and husband Tyler, Austin Crawford, Jesse

Ferland, 20 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Janiss L. Harlow, 79, of Lucas KS, passed away Thursday, November 24th,&nbsp; in Minneapolis, KS. Janiss was born November 28th, 1942, in Lincoln County,&nbsp; KS to Leo and Helen Bell Schroeder.

In her youth she 
enjoyed breaking and riding horses. In March of 1963, she was united in 
marriage to Billy W. Harlow in Lincoln KS. Over the years she worked in a
 missile silo, was an insurance agent, a babysitter, and a homemaker. In
 her spare time, Janiss was a bit of an amateur geologist. She enjoyed 
hunting for fossils and rocks for Bill to cart home. She enjoyed reading
 and learning about Kansas history and family genealogy. Janiss also 
enjoyed fishing and loved animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Helen, and brother Warren Schroeder.

She
 is survived by her husband Bill of 59 years, her daughter Teresa 
Carroll and husband Raymond of Baldwin City, KS, grandsons Bart Carroll 
of Kansas City MO and Phillip Carroll of Overland Park, KS, her sister 
Kathryn Little of Beverly KS, sister in-law Evelyn Schroeder of Lincoln,
 KS, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are pending at this

Lisa Jo McNeely, age 67, passed away peacefully Friday, November 18, 2022, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

Lisa was born July 28, 1955, to Billy and Janis (Hart) Archer in 
Ellinwood, Kansas. She graduated from Wichita County High School in 
Leoti, Kansas, in 1973. Lisa attended business college in Wichita, and 
she worked many different administrative jobs. On June 16, 1990, she 
married the love of her life, Jeff McNeely in Leoti. They lived in many 
different areas of Kansas and a few years in Florida, but finally 
planted roots in Goodland, KS in 2010.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. &nbsp;Lisa enjoyed fishing and 
traveling, spoiling her grandkids, and most of all spending time with 
her family and friends. &nbsp;

Preceding her in death are her dad, Billy; sister, Shelley Weems; 
grandson, Gannon Warden; father-in-law, Larry McNeely, and nephew, 
Justin Lane.

Lisa is survived by her husband Jeff McNeely of Goodland, KS; mother 
Janis Archer of Goodland, KS; her sons, Jason Roblin of Argonia, KS, 
Cale (Sherri) Warden of Deerfield, KS; Dylan (Courtney) Warden of 
Hesston, KS; Trevor (Kelly) Fisher of Scott City, KS, and Devon 
(Karleigh) Fisher of Scott City, KS; daughters, Chelsea (Cody) Young of

Edna Mae Stithem

Loren Harold Unruh, 79, passed away November 17, 2022, at Harry Hynes
 Memorial Hospice, Wichita, KS. He was born on February 9, 1943, to Ira 
&amp; Ella (Ward) Unruh in Great Bend, KS, where he grew up on the 
family farm. He met the love of his life, Connie Yuebanks, at church 
camp and they were married on January 19, 1964 in Great Bend, KS.

After Loren and Connie married, they had three children: Rick, 
Shawnda and Krista. Connie passed away on January 28, 1987. He married 
Gayle Kirchenman in 1988. She helped him continue managing the 
businesses until her death on May 30, 2022.

Loren bought his first combine at age 21 and started his Custom 
Combine business where he traveled from TX to MN harvesting wheat for 
farmers. In 1970, Loren &amp; Connie opened the Black Angus Steak Ranch 
and in 1977 the Best Western Angus Inn.

Loren was an active member in the community by serving on the board 
for the Chamber of Commerce and in 1978, he founded the Convention and 
Visitors Bureau. Loren was the Chairman of the Board for Best Western 
International, KS Restaurant &amp; Hospitality Association, and KS 
Lodging Association. Loren also loved the Barton County Cougars and was 
very proud to be a Top Cat. He founded the Cougar Booster Club and was 
awarded the 2016 Distinguished Service Award.

Loren was a member of Encounter Church (First Assembly of God) 
throughout his adult life, where he served as a Deacon and was 
passionate about furthering the gospel through world missions.

Loren is survived by his two daughters, Shawnda (Stan) Misina of 
Wilton, NH and Krista (Rich) Osborne of Riverdale, NJ; seven 
grandchildren, Dake (Kristi) Unruh of Benton, KS, Priscilla (Travis) 
Wilson of Wilton, NH, Benjamin Garcia of TX, Darian (Taylor) Unruh of 
Park City, KS, Haley (Hunter) Gullion of Springfield, MO, Rich 
(Yoseline) Osborne of Alexandria, VA and Ryan Osborne of Riverdale, NJ; 
eight great grandchildren, Sadie, Londyn, Tate and Landon Unruh, Liam 
and Savannah Wilson, Emma and Brayden Gullion; and three brothers, Paul 
Unruh of Great Bend, Victor (Marge) Unruh of Tarpon Springs, FL. and 
Phillip (Bobbie) Unruh of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ira and Ella 
Unruh; his beloved first wife, Connie (Yuebanks) Unruh; his second wife,
 Gayle (Royset) Unruh; his son, Rick Unruh; and his grandson, Landon 
Tate Unruh.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday, December
 2, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 6-8 p.m. 
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2022, 
at Encounter Church, with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Interment will

Loren Harold Unruh

John Lee Hickey, 73, died November 21, 2022, at Clara Barton Hospital
 in Hoisington, Kansas. The son of Elmer and Eleanor (Steinert) Hickey, 
he was born December 7, 1948, in Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; In 1967, John 
graduated from Otis High School.&nbsp; He then attended Salina Vo-Tech where 
he received his certification in diesel mechanics.

During the Vietnam War, John proudly served as an Army Specialist 4 in the United States Army.&nbsp;

On July 22, 1988, he married the love of his life, Charlene M. 
Vonfeldt, at the courthouse in Great Bend. They later renewed their vows
 at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, Kansas.

A lifetime resident of Olmitz, John worked as a diesel mechanic, as a
 farmer, and as a backhoe operator.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Ann’s 
Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus Council #2100.&nbsp; Always 
known to strike up a conversation with anyone and to be quick with a 
joke, he made friends wherever he went.&nbsp; John enjoyed playing Tarock, 
golfing with his buddies in Claflin, and spending time with his family.&nbsp;
 Some of his fondest memories involved spending time with his many 
grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Charlene Hickey of the home; 
daughter, Shannon Schreiner and husband Brian of Hays; grandsons, Shawn 
Ballinger and fiancée MacKenzie Gianacopolos of Hays; John Schreiner and
 wife Melanie of Downs, and Jesse Schreiner of Russell; granddaughter 
Laura Schreiner and partner Rob of Blue Hill, Nebraska; brothers-in-law,
 Stanley Vonfeldt and wife Nancy of Parker, Colorado, Tom Vonfeldt and 
wife Nancy of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Tom Zorko and wife Sue of Omaha, 
Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Mary Snider and husband Jim of Jefferson, 
Missouri; many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews; and, 
most importantly, his favorite dog, Emily.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law, Raeann 
Zorko, and two great-grandchildren, Shelby Schreiner and Sawyer Keller.

Per John’s request, cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Friends may sign a book at the funeral home from now until the service.

Services will be Monday, December 5th, 2022, at St. Ann’s 
Catholic Church, Olmitz, Kansas.&nbsp; Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m., led

Kristopher “Kris” Thyfault, age 45, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at HaysMed. Kris was born September 4, 1977, in Russell, Kansas, to Terrance Thyfault and Linda (Wolf) Thyfault. Kris graduated from Russell High School in 1996 where he participated in Football, Track and Band. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, playing cards with family, and attending his niece and nephews sporting events. Kris was a longtime employee with Universal Termite and Pest Control in Hays. Kris was well known with his customers and hard to miss because of his size. Contrary to his size Kris was known as a kind, soft spoken man who enjoyed visiting with his customers and making lasting relationships with them. Kris is survived by his father, Terry Thyfault of Topeka; his mother, Linda Thyfault of Hays; his sister, Katrina Schmidt and husband Eric and their children, Kyla and Kobe all of Hays; a grandmother, Edna Wolf Billinger (Pete) of Hays as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Kris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kenneth and Anita Thyfault and Marcellus Wolf as well as an uncle, Rick Wolf. Kristopher 'Kris' Thyfault

Dale Eugene Hiser, 75, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, 
November 22, 2022, in a Chattanooga hospital. 

Dale was born in Hays, 
Kansas, and he was the son of the late Bessie Smith Hiser and Grady 
Hiser. His sisters, Bonnie Bain, Freda Lambert and his brothers, Marvin 
Hiser and Roy Hiser also preceded him in death. 

For 51 years, he served 
in Management for several large Manufacturing Companies including Cessna
 Aircraft, Copeland-Emerson, Lexington Furniture, Maytag/Whirlpool and 
Lazy Boy. Dale enjoyed the outdoors including fishing, hunting, golf and
 boating. He was a member of the ELKs Lodge, NRA and Pheasants Forever. 
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church here in Cleveland. 
 Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Wilma Pywell Hiser, Cleveland, 
son, Shawn Hiser, Cleveland, daughter, Dayla Hiser Rainwater (Clark) 
Cullman, Alabama, grandchildren, Kelsey Rainwater, Tucker Rainwater, 
sister, Gail Botinelly (Joe), Wichita, Kansas, numerous sisters in law, 
brothers in law, nieces and nephews. The Remembrance of Life 
Service will be conducted on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 4 P. M. E.S.T.
 at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee Chapel with 
Pastor Matt Nail (Friend) and Pastor Curt McKee officiating. The family 
will receive friends from 2 until 4 P. M. E.S.T. on Monday at the Jim 
Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee Chapel.

Graveside 
Services and Interment will be conducted on Saturday, December 3, 2022,&nbsp; at 11:30 A. M. C.S.T. at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Palco, Kansas.

 </figure>Dale Eugene Hiser, 75, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, 
November 22, 2022, in a Chattanooga hospital. Dale was born in Hays, 
Kansas, and he was the son of the late Bessie Smith Hiser and Grady 
Hiser. His sisters, Bonnie Bain, Freda Lambert and his brothers, Marvin 
Hiser and Roy Hiser also preceded him in death. For 51 years, he served 
in Management for several large Manufacturing Companies including Cessna
 Aircraft, Copeland-Emerson, Lexington Furniture, Maytag/Whirlpool and 
Lazy Boy. Dale enjoyed the outdoors including fishing, hunting, golf and
 boating. He was a member of the ELKs Lodge, NRA and Pheasants Forever. 
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church here in Cleveland. 
 Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Wilma Pywell Hiser, Cleveland, 
son, Shawn Hiser, Cleveland, daughter, Dayla Hiser Rainwater (Clark) 
Cullman, Alabama, grandchildren, Kelsey Rainwater, Tucker Rainwater, 
sister, Gail Botinelly (Joe), Wichita, Kansas, numerous sisters in law, 
brothers in law, nieces and nephews. The Remembrance of Life 
Service will be conducted on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 4 P. M. E.S.T.

Dale Eugene Hiser

Patricia L. Sands, 85, of Hutchinson, passed away peacefully November
 22, 2022, at Hospice House of Reno County after a brief battle with 
pancreatic cancer. She was born September 24, 1937, in Burdett, the 
daughter of Everett and Opal (Epley) Ruby.

A longtime resident of Hutchinson, Pattie graduated from Hutchinson 
High School in 1955. She was employed at various Hutchinson stores, 
including Peel’s Beauty Supply. Pattie was a longtime member of Hope 
Church (previously Believers Tabernacle and First Assembly of God) in 
Hutchinson and loved her church family.

Pattie married Douglas Sands on June 25, 1960. He died May 19, 2014.

She is survived by: her children, LaDena Sands Dosdall (Gerald) of 
Wichita, Michael Sands (Sharon) of Lorain, OH; grandchildren, Bethany 
Newell (Cliff), Lindsey Long (Grant), Elizabeth Henry (Matt), Wesley 
Dosdall (Caitlin); great-grandchildren, Gianna, Zevulun, Luke, Logan, 
Clayton; sister, Kay Bergen-Potts; niece, Barbara Bergen Whitmore; and 
nephew, Marc Bergen (Teri).

Pattie was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Steve, Joe, and Greg Ruby.

Mike (Cecil) Peters, 73, passed from this world on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS. Mike
 was born Oct. 11, 1949, in La Crosse, KS to Robert and Munica 
(Reynolds) Peters. In 1967, he graduated from McCracken High School. 
On October 19, 1968, he was united in marriage to Diana Lynn Schaffer in 
Liebenthal, KS. They celebrated 53 years of marriage last month. Mike
 began his career at Carey Salt in Hutchinson, KS where he worked for 
three years. He spent the next 35 years working for United Parcel 
Service (UPS) in Hays, KS. You would never see Mike without a 
smile on his face; he didn’t know a stranger. He had a contagious laugh 
that brought joy to everyone he would meet. Mike was a fun-loving, 
hardworking, and selfless man, with a heart bigger than any other. His 
love for life, perseverance, and strength will live on in all who knew 
him. Mike enjoyed playing golf, going to the casinos, and watching his 
grandkids’ sporting events. Most of all, he loved his family. Survivors
 include his wife Diana of Olathe, KS., three daughters: Mellissa 
Shepherd, Michelle Mussat, and Marla Andregg, all of Overland Park, KS:

Bettie Elaine (Stupka) Hamill, age 84, of Colby, died at her home from pneumonia and lung complications on November 21, 2022. 
Bettie was born in Thomas County, KS on December 2, 1938, to parents 
Anna Margaret (Janousek) and Lou “L.J.” Stupka. Her family lived on a 
farm and a house north of town that Lou built himself. 
She graduated from Levant High School in 1957. Throughout her life, she 
worked as office help in the old Colby hospital and dental offices. She 
became a realtor and then cleaned for the courthouse for many years. 
She enjoyed restoring furniture, redecorating her homes, bird watching, 
garage sales, and riding horses (bareback); when she was a little girl. 
But most of all, she loved to laugh, tell jokes, and pull pranks. 
Keeping everyone on their toes with the commentary that she narrated of 
events. 
Bettie married Jimmie Mentlick, and to this union were born her two 
girls, Lesa Ann and Stacey Danielle. In her later years, around 1997, 
she became the last companion to Joe Ruddell for 19 years. 
When she fell ill due to the effects of her cancer, she moved in with Lesa. Stacy moved home from Wichita to assist in her care. 
Bettie was preceded in death by her companion Joe Ruddell; her siblings,
 Fronie, Sonny, Ed, Chuck, Vivian, Mildred, Bernice, and Hedy; parents 
Anna and Lou Stupka. Bettie is survived by her brother Bud Stupka and 
her daughters, Lesa Ann and Stacey Danielle. 
A Memorial Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 26,

Keith D. Waddington, 93, passed away November 22, 2022, at his home in Larned.

He was born June 24, 1929, in Cairo, Nebraska, the son of Jay and Hazel Manners Waddington.

Moving from Moore, Oklahoma, he was a Larned resident for ten years. 
He served in the United States Navy and later worked as a civilian for 
the Air Force Department of Defense. In his early years he was a 
volunteer firefighter while living in New York and after obtaining his 
pilot’s license, enjoyed flying. He was active in his children’s school 
organizations while they were growing up and an avid golfer.

In 1953, he married Helen Berg in South Dakota; she preceded him in death.

Survivors include: son, Doug Waddington, Larned and daughter Diane (Don) Holdeman, Woodward, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; brother, Clarence
 “Butch” Waddington; four sisters, Ruby Warner, Claire Levine, Bonnie 
Rust, and Arlene Graf; and a grandson, Keith Allen Hoover.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service with military honors will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022, at Beckwith Mortuary 
Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Jarred Smith presiding. Visitation will be

Mariquita S. Fry passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter 
Pauline, surrounded by James, James L. and Jonathan Tapia at her home in
 Romeroville, NM on November 18, 2022.

Mariquita lived most of her life in Kansas, where she enjoyed working
 in her garden. She enjoyed fishing, embroidery, crochet, hunting, and 
tea parties with her church family.

She worked for Department of Health as a translator, in Kinsley, KS, 
and CNA for Parkview Manor in Macksville, KS. She enjoyed traveling. 
Most memorable was her trip to Disneyland, view of the ocean and 
collecting seashells, and enjoying a St. Louis Cardinals game.

She was born in Ojito Frios, NM to the late Adelaido Salas and Marta 
Tenorio on February 25, 1932. She is preceded in death by sons Felipe 
and Joe B. Baca, grandson Michael Baca and great-grandson Brendan 
Graber.

She is survived by her daughter Pauline Tapia (James) of Romeroville,
 NM, Nash Baca (Margie) of Dodge City, KS, daughter Lucy Baca (Faustino)
 of Hernandez, NM, Mary McClurg (Charlie) of Hays, KS, daughter Lisa Jo 
of Boston, MA, son Johnny Baca of Austin, TX, son Greg Baca (Brittany) 
of Salina, KS. 19 grandchildren, granddaughter she raised Tonie Graber 
(Mark) of Pratt, KS, 24 great-grandchildren, 9 
great-great-grandchildren. Step-sons Randy and Jerry Fry of Kansas, 
numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 Romeroville, NM on November 18, 2022.Mariquita lived most of her life in Kansas, where she enjoyed working
 in her garden. She enjoyed fishing, embroidery, crochet, hunting, and 
tea parties with her church family.She worked for Department of Health as a translator, in Kinsley, KS, 
and CNA for Parkview Manor in Macksville, KS. She enjoyed traveling. 
Most memorable was her trip to Disneyland, view of the ocean and 
collecting seashells, and enjoying a St. Louis Cardinals game.She was born in Ojito Frios, NM to the late Adelaido Salas and Marta 
Tenorio on February 25, 1932. She is preceded in death by sons Felipe 
and Joe B. Baca, grandson Michael Baca and great-grandson Brendan 
Graber.She is survived by her daughter Pauline Tapia (James) of Romeroville,
 NM, Nash Baca (Margie) of Dodge City, KS, daughter Lucy Baca (Faustino)
 of Hernandez, NM, Mary McClurg (Charlie) of Hays, KS, daughter Lisa Jo 
of Boston, MA, son Johnny Baca of Austin, TX, son Greg Baca (Brittany) 
of Salina, KS. 19 grandchildren, granddaughter she raised Tonie Graber 
(Mark) of Pratt, KS, 24 great-grandchildren, 9 
great-great-grandchildren. Step-sons Randy and Jerry Fry of Kansas, 
numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.The Family would like to thank the Amber care and their caring staff.
 They also want to thank her friends and the staff at Meadows long term 
facility.Rosary will be recited on Tuesday November 29, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM.Funeral Mass will be conducted on Wednesday November 30, 2022, at 9:00

Frances Mary Stansbury was born on June 8th, 1940, in Clarks, NE to 
parents Elmer and Eva Piper. Fran entered into marriage to Jim Stansbury
 on June 9th, 1962, in Formoso, KS.

To this marriage, 3 children were born James A. Stansbury, Terry Stansbury and Kristie (Stansbury) Clancy.

Fran
 worked as the Bookkeeper for Jim’s S&amp;H Body &amp; Frame and later 
for Jim’s Tire &amp; Alignment. In 1980 Fran went to work in 
Housekeeping at Smith County Memorial Hospital where she worked for 22 
years before retiring.

Fran’s hobbies included Camping at Glen Elder, following, and playing with Grandkids and great grandkids.

Frances Mary 'Fran' Stansbury

Marion Anthony Otter passed from this earth at the age of 87 on November 20, 2022, at home in New Almelo, KS.

Marion was born on the farm in Norton County on March 28, 1935, to Frank G. Otter and Margaret K. [Bates] Otter.

He
 was joined in Holy Matrimony with Marilyn F. [Hickert] on November 28, 
1957.  To this marriage were born Frank, Greg, Steve, Doug and Emily 
[Otter] Kessler.

Marion might have told you that he was a graduate
 of the school of hard knocks or that tuition is high, no matter where 
you go to school.  He was a farmer/rancher, an inventor and had a 
natural understanding of engineering and economics.  In 1958, he founded 
Otter Manufacturing in a small out-building on the farm, later upgrading
 to a building made from the top of a barn and later into the twin 
buildings that is now Otter’s Inc in rural Norton County. From the 
beginning he built tool implement carriers and dozer blades for farm 
tractors, performed equipment repairs for neighbors and assisted in many
 area projects.  Over the years he and sons Frank, Greg and Doug 
continued to farm, ranch and build dozer blades.  Marion and Marilyn 
delivered blades to over 20 states over the years before incorporating 
the business and semi-retiring in 1997.  He continued to work with the 
guys at the farm doing whatever needed to be done.

Over the years,
 Marion was a member of several organizations including St Joseph’s 
Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, National Farmer Organization (NFO),
 Western Kansas Manufacturing Association (WKMA), USD 213 Lenora School 
Board, Goodland Vocational Technical school board, Rural Telephone 
Service board, Norton County Soil Conservation Service and St. Joseph 
Cemetery sexton. During the 70’s he also coached and umpired games for 
Lenora K-18 league baseball.

He was active in his parish of St. 
Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo and the community where he helped 
with numerous projects including mixing &amp; hauling mortar for the 
school gymnasium school addition. Renovating the St. Joseph church in 
the 60’s and addition of accessibility ramp and entrance to the church. 
Some of his welding projects included the belltower for the Jennings 
Methodist Church, the Allison livestock collection point, metal trusses 
for re-roofing the St. Joseph &amp; Lenora Grade School, the Lenora 
Larrick Park concession stand and restroom modernization.

Marion 
is survived by his wife Marilyn; siblings: Alvin Otter, Sr., Donna 
Otter, and JoAnn Long; children: Frank [Levonne], Greg [Tammy], Steve 
and Emily [Gary]; nine grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Marion
 was preceded in death by his parents, Frank G. Otter and Margaret K. 
Otter; siblings: Emory [infant], Rita [infant], Virginia (Sr Francis 
Margaret), Irene (Sr Mary Ester) and son, Douglas E. Otter.

Mass 
of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 
St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Almelo, KS. Visitation will be 5-7:00 pm
 Monday, November 28, with a Rosary of our Lord following at 7:00 pm at 
the New Almelo Gymnasium.

Marion Anthony Otter

Paul Edward Phillips, 79, Hays, died 
Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at his home surrounded by family, after a 
long battle with pancreatic and liver illness.&nbsp;

He was born on January 25, 1943, in 
Peoria, Illinois, to Dale and Frances (Icenogle) Phillips.&nbsp; In 1961, he 
graduated from Woodruff High School in Peoria and then earned his BS and
 MS degrees at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois in 1965 and
 1967.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Patricia Jean Purkey at Christ 
Lutheran Church in Normal, Illinois, on May 29, 1965.&nbsp; Paul earned his 
PhD at the University of Kansas in 1978, and he taught Cultural 
Geography at Fort Hays State University for 50 years, retiring in 2017.

While at FHSU, he taught a multitude of
 geography courses, led numerous geography field trips for students and 
teachers, was chairperson of the Department of Geosciences, initiated 
the teaching of geography for students across the globe courses at FHSU 
via distance learning, was instrumental in developing the Kansas 
Geography Alliance to educate K-12 teachers in effective methods to 
include geography in the state’s social studies curriculum, as well as 
serving on many university committees throughout his tenure.

Paul was also active in his church and 
in the community of Hays.&nbsp; At Messiah Lutheran Church, he served 
multiple times as congregational president and on the Board of Parish 
Life, more recently helping in the kitchen for the Wednesday Midweek 
evening education program and Vacation Bible School.&nbsp; His community 
activities included holding many offices in the Hays Lions Club, on the 
Board of Directors for the Farmer’s Credit Union, and many years of the 
Hays City Planning Commission, continuing to serve as chairperson until 
the time of his latest illness.&nbsp; His longtime interest in radio found an
 outlet as he served on the High Plains Public Radio (HPPR) board for 
many years.

Survivors include Pat, his wife of 
fifty-seven years of the home, his daughter Keri Lynn Applequist and 
husband Patrick, a granddaughter Jennifer Anne Applequist and a grandson
 Phillip James Applequist, all of Larned, Kansas, a sister Carol 
Anderson and husband Charles of Tucson, Arizona, as well as nieces and 
nephews in Illinois and Arizona.

Paul loved traveling and enjoyed 
sharing stories and pictures from his many trips across the US and 
around the world.&nbsp; He strongly feels that first hand knowledge about the
 world is more important today than ever, so when he realized his time 
on earth was nearing its end, he and Pat established the Paul and Pat 
Phillips Abroad Award at FHSU to support students pursuing a BS degree 
and wishing to spend a semester abroad.&nbsp; This would help with student 
expenses not otherwise covered by the Study Abroad Exchange Program.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Hays, with 
Pastor Kenton Rohrberg and Pastor John Morley officiating.&nbsp; Burial will 
follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery with a lunch served in the fellowship hall 
of the church after the graveside service.&nbsp; The family will receive 
friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday at Hays Memorial Chapel 
Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, Hays and from 9:00 am until service time
 on Tuesday at the church.
