Terry LaVerne Nuss, 76, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, November 25, 2022, at his home with his family by his side.

Terry was born&nbsp;April&nbsp;25, 1946, in Great Bend,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;He was one of three children born to Gerhardt&nbsp;and Delora (McCullough) Nuss. &nbsp;He grew up in Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School. &nbsp;He then attended Fort Hays State University and obtained a degree in Business.

Terry was united in marriage to Phyllis A Winn on&nbsp;September&nbsp;12, 1981, in Denver, Colorado. &nbsp;

Terry worked in retail sales and was a general manager for a liquor&nbsp;store. He was a member of the Arvada Elk’s Lodge. &nbsp;He enjoyed golfing, traveling and having a good cigar with friends.

Terry’s surviving&nbsp;family&nbsp;include his wife of&nbsp;41 years, Phyllis of the home; daughter, Sara&nbsp;Thomas of Russell, Kansas; son, Matthew Nuss of&nbsp;Colorado; mother, Delora Nuss of Great Bend,&nbsp;Kansas; brother, Greg Nuss of Great Bend, Kansas;&nbsp;four&nbsp;grandchildren, Scott McAdoo, Andrew Nuss, Channer Nuss and Madyson Thomas; and two great granddaughters, Adley and Amelia McAdoo.

Terry was preceded in death by his father&nbsp;and sister Sandi Simmons.

A Memorial Service will be held at&nbsp;2:00 PM, Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the&nbsp;Dole/Specter Center&nbsp;at the Fossil&nbsp;Creek Hotel in Russell,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;

A Memorial has been&nbsp;established&nbsp;with the Russell Play Park. Contributions and&nbsp;condolences&nbsp;may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

David Zook, 80 passed away peacefully on December 12, 2022, at his home in Zook, KS.

He was born May 13, 1942, in Great Bend, KS the son of Daniel W. and Joyce S.&nbsp; Zook.

A lifetime Zook resident and a 1960 graduate of Zook High School, 
David was a farmer, rancher and horse trader. Alongside his wife, Judy, 
they owned and operated the Double “D” Western Store in Larned, KS for 
33 years. He was an active member of the Larned United Methodist Church.
 For many years, David was leader and supporter of the Zook Zippers 4-H 
Club. In his retirement, he enjoyed providing horse and buggy rides for 
the community, spending time doing leather work and getting together 
with the “In Table” social group from the Methodist Church. His greatest
 joy was his family, especially his granddaughters.&nbsp;

On May 13th, 1972, he married Judith A. Cutler at the Southwestern 
College Chapel, Winfield Kansas. She passed away June 19, 2013.

Survivors include: a son Daniel and husband Michael Zook, Austin, TX,
 a daughter Debbie and husband Eli Makings, Larned KS, 2 granddaughters 
Dava and husband Kolby Keith, Larned, KS and Alea and husband Brayden 
Lothman, Haviland, KS. Brothers Warren Zook, San Bernadino, CA and Owen 
and wife Diane Zook, Larned, KS. Several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Rebecca Clowers.

Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. December 17, 2022, at the Beckwith 
Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Tricia North presiding. Visitation 
will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2022, with the family 
present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley 
Cemetery, Zook, KS.

Anna Elizabeth “Betty” Ostrom, 88, Hays, died Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 14, 1934, in 
Victoria, the daughter of Leroy Richard and Caroline (Paulsen) 
Martin.&nbsp;&nbsp;Betty was a graduate of Hays High School, worked at Travenol, 
and was a waitress at numerous restaurants throughout Hays and for many 
years at the Holiday Inn.&nbsp;&nbsp;On August 7, 1954, she was united in marriage 
to Kenneth Bryan Ostrom in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;He preceded her in death on June 13, 
2010.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, the 
Hays VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer at the Hays Senior 
Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her hobbies included playing Bingo and watching gameshows and 
KU basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed playing cards with friends and was talented 
at drawing and sketching.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son: Mitchell 
Ostrom of Ellis, two daughters: Denise Johnson and husband Dennis of 
Hays and Merilee Lutey and husband Bill of Salina, eight grandchildren 
and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Kenneth, a son: Marshall Ostrom, two daughters: Deborah
 Klaus and infant Dena Marie Ostrom, one brother, and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with 
The Rev. Shay Craig officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in Kansas Veterans’

Douglas Arthur Joy, age 75, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2022, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth, Kansas.

He was born March 23, 1947,&nbsp;in Hays, Kansas, to Arthur C. and Ruth Edna (Angel) Joy.

He worked at Cross&nbsp;Manufacturing&nbsp;in&nbsp;Hays for a number of years, then went to work in the janitorial department at Fort Hays Sate University and retired in 2012. &nbsp;He was a member of St. Andrew’s&nbsp;Episcopal Church, Hays, Kansas and a veteran of the U S Army.

His survivors include his son, Justin Joy and wife, Melissa, Wichita, KS; his daughter, Marlynda Dixon, Olathe, KS; his grandchildren, Grayson and Riley Joy; Carlle and Matthew Dixon;&nbsp;his brother, Charles Joy, Hays, KS;&nbsp;his two sisters, Jan Bunker,&nbsp;Hays, KS; and Marianne Neil, London, England.&nbsp;Douglas was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services will be at 4:00 P.M. Friday, December 16, 2022, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd&nbsp;Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 with Rev. Shay Craig officiating. &nbsp;A family inurnment will be at a later date.

Douglas Arthur Joy

Ruth Mary “Peggy” Jones, 91, departed this life December 9, 2022, in 
Hill City, Kansas. Ruth was born May 25, 1931, to Joseph and Ruth (Hood)
 Malin in Denver, Colorado. At a young age, she was nicknamed Peggy by 
her father who liked that name better than Ruth Mary. And the nickname 
stuck. When she was a teenager the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. 
Little did she know that she would be living next door to the boy who 
became the love of her life, Maurice “Joe” Jones. While attending high 
school in Phoenix, Peggy was in the Women’s Rifle Club and earned very 
high honors in marksmanship. She graduated in 1947.

Peggy
 and Joe were united in marriage February 21, 1948. After marrying they 
soon moved to Kansas where they took over the family farm south of 
Bogue. To this union four children were born: Richard Duane, Michael 
Jay, Deborah Ann, and Sandra Lea.

For 
over 15 years Peggy worked at the Graham County Treasurer’s office in 
Hill City. After Joe’s death in 1985 Peggy moved to California that 
summer to be with her mother and sister. While living there she worked 
for the Southern Automobile Company of California until November of 
1990. Then she decided to return to Kansas to be closer to her children 
and grandchildren.  The summer of 1991 Peggy went to work at the Hill 
City grocery store, which she loved dearly, especially being around 
people, laughing and joking with them as she checked out their 
groceries. She was known to everyone as “Granny”

because people would often ask “how many grandkids?” Peggy worked at the grocery store until her health started failing.

In
 her spare time Peggy enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She loved gardening,
 painting, drawing, and fishing. Her life was full of music. She was an 
accomplished pianist and organist, and an amazing accordion player. 
Sometimes Joe took out his guitar to play a few tunes and Peggy joined 
in, usually with her accordion. Peggy’s most favorite activity of all 
was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When 
they stopped by, she danced with them, teaching them the two-step.  She 
also wanted to teach them how to play the piano. And her favorite 
Saturday night pastime was dancing at the Cowboy Junction.

Peggy
 was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Ruth Malin, her husband
 Joe, two sons Richard and Mike, a brother Joseph “Mac” Malin, and four 
sisters: Margie Woods, Mildred Malin, Helen Hardy and Betty Hardy.

Survivors
 left to remember and cherish her memory include daughters Deborah Budig
 (fiancé Roy Cooper) and Sandra Patton, both of Hill City; 
daughters-in-law Denise Jones and Ethel Jones; 11 grandchildren and 22 
great grandchildren.

Peggy was full of life ~ surrounded by those 
who loved her dearly. She will be missed, but the memories she left us 
will live in our hearts.

Ruth Mary 'Peggy' Jones

Genevieve (Jean) Ann Noel was born on May 8, 1936, on Uncle John Kitzke’s&nbsp; Farm southwest of Densmore to John and Josephine (Glennemeier) Noel. 

Jean was the youngest of ten children. She passed away on December 12, 2022, at the Sidney Regional Medical Center in Sidney, Neb., at the age of 86.

When Jean and her sister Marcella started school, they stayed with Grandma Glennemier in Logan the first year. The next year Jean’s parents bought the Logan House Hotel and that was home for several years. Around the year 1947, Jean started taking tickets at the theater.&nbsp; Jean worked there until her mom sold the hotel and bought the grocery store. Jean worked at the store and went back to work at the theater at night selling popcorn.

On May 25, 1953, Jean married Leo Noel at St. John’s Catholic Church in Logan, and they started their married life on Leo’s Uncle Frank's farm northwest of Logan. All their children were born while living on the farm. Thomas Leo, Karen Sue, Catherine Ann, Anna Marie and David Paul.&nbsp;&nbsp; Catherine only lived a few hours.

When David started kindergarten, Jean started working at the creamery until it closed. In October 1968 Jean went to work for Nola McClellan’s dry goods store. She worked there for 10 years. On January 15, 1979, Jean started a new job at the Hansen Trust and Foundation. Jean worked there until her retirement.&nbsp; In June 1986, Leo and Jean bought the Liquor Store from the Jandera’s and ran it for six years. They closed the store and Leo retired.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Logan Funeral Home in Logan.&nbsp; The Rosary will follow at 6 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church with burial at the Logan Cemetery following Mass.

Betty was a teacher in the Emporia School District at 
Emporia Middle School for 34 years. Betty considered herself an English 
teacher, though she taught several language arts classes. She received 
her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Emporia State 
University. From 1995 through 1999 she was a member of the Board of 
Education for U.S.D. #253, Emporia, and was a member of the First United
 Methodist Church, Emporia.

Teaching was her passion. She loved her students and fellow teachers and spending time with her grandchildren.

A memorial has been established and will be designated later.

Ernest Alvin “Sonny” Stoppel, 75, of Russell, Kansas, died peacefully
 on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in 
Russell, after a long battle with cancer.

Earnest was known as Sonny by his family and was born on March 10, 
1947, in Wilson, Kansas, the son of Carl Alvin and Pearl Mae (Bushell) 
Stoppel.&nbsp; His family lived in several small towns around western Kansas,
 including Wilson, Lucas, Gorham and then moved to Russell.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Russell High School and attended vo-tech studies in the 
electrician field.&nbsp;

He married Alice Kilian in 1971, but later was divorced.&nbsp; He worked 
many different jobs in his lifetime, working in the oilfield industry 
and the Chevrolet garage in Russell.&nbsp; He also worked as a custodian at 
Dorrance High School, Larned State Hospital and Hays Hospital and as a 
senior companion at DSNWK.&nbsp; During his life he enjoyed fishing, camping,
 fixing gadgets and enjoyed tinkering with taking things apart and 
putting them back together.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed spending time with 
his family.

Sonny is survived by his sister Patricia M. Demel and husband Ray of 
Great Bend, Kansas and his brother LeRoy Stoppel of Russell, Kansas and 
his niece Melissa Demel of Gladstone, Missouri.&nbsp; He was preceded in 
death by his parents.

Cremation has been selected by the family.&nbsp; A memorial service to 
celebrate Sonny’s life will be held at a later date.&nbsp; 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the 
memorial service arrangements.

 Wayne Kraft, age 37, left this Earth on December 9, 2022. He was born 
on July 29, 1985 in Ness City, the son of Larry and Donna (Snodgrass) 
Kraft.

Matt
 had a warm, loving heart and an infectious smile that drew many people 
to him. He was a member of The Generations Church, Ness City, where he 
had been baptized on September 11, 2022. He was a lifetime member of the
 Ransom VFW Auxiliary, KSCM, the Wolfpack, and was very involved in 
Ultra4 racing. To say that Matt was a gun enthusiast is an 
understatement. He had a zeal for handling and caring for guns and for 
training others to do the same. Matt enjoyed being in the outdoors, on 
the lake, camping, or hunting. Matt loved dogs and currently had three 
which he lovingly called his fur babies. 

On
 August 14, 2019 he married Melissa Parsons in the Dominican Republic. 
She survives. Other survivors include his parents, Larry and Donna Kraft
 of Ness City; brother, Skyler Kraft and his wife, Katie, of Hutchinson,
 Kansas and their children, Ellie and Dean; two sisters, Tandy Kraft of 
Ness City and her daughter, Mattilyn and Chynelle Kraft of Mission, 
Kansas; grandfather, Kay Snodgrass (Wilma) of Wichita; significant 
other, Erica Carr and her children, Wyatt, Callie, Clara (Matt's 
“Bestie”) and Lylah. He was also survived by many aunts, uncles, 
cousins, and friends. Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, 
Nancy Snodgrass and Hubert and Shirley Kraft.

A
 memorial service will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022, 11:00 a.m.

Genevieve (Jean) Ann Noel

Lawrence “L.J.” James Leiby III went to be in the arms of Jesus Friday December 9, 2022 at the age of 12. L.J. was the son of Larry &amp; Emily Leiby of Quinter, KS and Summer&nbsp;(Byington) Leiby of Oberlin, KS. He was an older brother to Philip, Abigail, Norah and Tucker. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins,&nbsp;grandparents,&nbsp;and friends. He is preceded in death by his Grandpa Larry Leiby I.&nbsp;

L.J. enjoyed all things outdoors — fishing, hunting, driving tractor and caring for his sheep. He had plans to restore his '40s Farmall M to its glory&nbsp;and then driving it around and showing it off.&nbsp;He enjoyed playing baseball and football, watching&nbsp;football,&nbsp;and listening to Johnny Cash.&nbsp;He was a 7th&nbsp;grader at Quinter Jr/Sr High School who looked forward to band each day. He truly enjoyed playing his tuba and practiced any chance he got.&nbsp;He had a sharp mind and could rattle off facts on just about anything and he never forgot them!&nbsp;He also enjoyed reading and playing Monopoly and Minecraft. &nbsp;He was a member of Club 3:16 at the Gove Community Bible Church and would share the love of Jesus with his friends and invite them along. L.J. was gifted with the ability to make a friend with anyone he met.&nbsp;On Saturday mornings he&nbsp;would&nbsp;try to&nbsp;wake up earlier than the rest of his family and make pancakes for breakfast.&nbsp;L.J. cared deeply for those he loved and will be deeply missed.&nbsp;

While his time here on Earth was&nbsp;short,&nbsp;he got to travel to many places including the Black Hills,&nbsp;Michigan and Rocky Mountains which were his favorite to talk about. &nbsp;He would tell anyone who would listen his fishing stories and that he had the chance to fish in the Mississippi River. Many times, he asked to skip school on a good fishing day.&nbsp;

His funeral will be Wednesday, December 14, at 10:30 AM at Gove Community Bible Church in Gove KS; Pastor Chris Thomas will be officiating.&nbsp;Livestreaming will be available in the morning. The link will be on the Gove Community Bible Church’s Facebook page.&nbsp;There will also be a gathering at 5:30 for Club 3:16 members to share a meal and remember L.J.  </figure>Lawrence “L.J.” James Leiby III went to be in the arms of Jesus Friday December 9, 2022 at the age of 12. L.J. was the son of Larry &amp; Emily Leiby of Quinter, KS and Summer&nbsp;(Byington) Leiby of Oberlin, KS. He was an older brother to Philip, Abigail, Norah and Tucker. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins,&nbsp;grandparents,&nbsp;and friends. He is preceded in death by his Grandpa Larry Leiby I.&nbsp;L.J. enjoyed all things outdoors — fishing, hunting, driving tractor and caring for his sheep. He had plans to restore his '40s Farmall M to its glory&nbsp;and then driving it around and showing it off.&nbsp;He enjoyed playing baseball and football, watching&nbsp;football,&nbsp;and listening to Johnny Cash.&nbsp;He was a 7th&nbsp;grader at Quinter Jr/Sr High School who looked forward to band each day. He truly enjoyed playing his tuba and practiced any chance he got.&nbsp;He had a sharp mind and could rattle off facts on just about anything and he never forgot them!&nbsp;He also enjoyed reading and playing Monopoly and Minecraft. &nbsp;He was a member of Club 3:16 at the Gove Community Bible Church and would share the love of Jesus with his friends and invite them along. L.J. was gifted with the ability to make a friend with anyone he met.&nbsp;On Saturday mornings he&nbsp;would&nbsp;try to&nbsp;wake up earlier than the rest of his family and make pancakes for breakfast.&nbsp;L.J. cared deeply for those he loved and will be deeply missed.&nbsp;While his time here on Earth was&nbsp;short,&nbsp;he got to travel to many places including the Black Hills,&nbsp;Michigan and Rocky Mountains which were his favorite to talk about. &nbsp;He would tell anyone who would listen his fishing stories and that he had the chance to fish in the Mississippi River. Many times, he asked to skip school on a good fishing day.&nbsp;His funeral will be Wednesday, December 14, at 10:30 AM at Gove Community Bible Church in Gove KS; Pastor Chris Thomas will be officiating.&nbsp;Livestreaming will be available in the morning. Lawrence 'L.J.' James Leiby III

Carrol Lynn Walker, 89, passed away December 10, 2022, at Country Living Home Plus in Larned, KS.

She was born April 9, 1933, in Larned, the daughter of Raymond Edward
 and Florence Blanche Smith Johnson. Carrol was raised in Larned and 
received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and home 
economics at Fort Hays State College. On February 6, 1955, she married 
Duane Lee Walker in Larned, KS. After Duane joined the Navy, they were 
stationed in New Mexico, Washington State, California and Texas. 
Teaching was her first love and she taught in every place they lived. 
Carrol taught students from grade school to adults while raising her 
four children. They returned to Kansas in 1974 where she taught in the 
Hays school system, and then became the Director of Special Education in
 Stafford County. Carrol and Duane retired and moved back to Larned in 
1995.

She volunteered at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary and 
Santa Fe Trail Center, both in Larned. Carrol loved plants and 
transformed many gardens in her life.

Survivors include: two sons, David B. Walker (Cathy Comstock), Gig 
Harbor, WA, and Mark L. (Dani) Walker, Spotsylvania, VA; daughter, 
Judith Walker, Hays; two sisters, Rhonda Cooley, Fort Collins, CO, and 
Donnis Miller Shipley, Hutchinson; nine grandchildren and eleven great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; a daughter, Susan Michelle Walker; and a sister, Laurel Johnson.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Beckwith 
Mortuary Chapel, Larned.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
Wednesday at the mortuary with family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; 
Burial will be the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.

Carrol Lynn Walker

Karen Otte, 85, passed away December 11, 2022, at Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita, Kansas.

She was born February 3, 1937, in Ellsworth, Kansas, the daughter of Benton Ezra and Margaret I. Remley Rice.

A lifetime Larned resident, she was a farmwife and member of the 
First Presbyterian Church, Larned. She was a member of the Red Hat 
Ladies, Gem Gals, Pawnee County 4-H, Santa Fe Trail Center, Wet Dry 
Routes Chapter and past 4-H cooking leader. She loved taking mystery 
trips with the Heritage Tours, square dancing in her younger days, 
playing cards and dominoes with her friends and family, and was an avid 
reader. In her lifetime she served in many capacities at the church, 
volunteered at the Food Pantry and helped with the monthly birthday 
parties at Diversicare.

On September 16, 1956, she married Dale Otte in Great Bend, Kansas; he passed away on October 17, 2014.

Survivors include: two daughters, Lori (Rick) Blakesley, Hutchinson, 
Kim (Steve) Gevara, Larned; sister-in-law Lois Schimmels, Clinton, 
Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Matt) Fisher, Matthew (Janae) 
Finger, Jacob (Kat) Finger, Audree (Adrian) Senestraro, Emile (Dylan) 
Frantz, Tanner (Claire) Blakesley, and Bryce (Madison) Gevara; Thirteen 
great grandchildren, Jenna Fisher, Sarah Fisher, Grace Fisher, Emmet 
Fisher, Caden Finger, Jayce Finger, Kaysen Finger, Isabel Finger, 
Maddison Senestraro, Maia Senestraro, Maddex Frantz, Brynley Frantz and

Karen Fern Otte

Gordon R.&nbsp;Garrett, 67, of Russell, Kansas, went home to be&nbsp;with the Lord on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas.

Gordon was born March 23, 1955, in&nbsp;Ellsworth,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;He was the son of&nbsp;Duane A. and Joan L. (Kaufman) Garrett. &nbsp;He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1973. &nbsp;Gordon only missed one day of school from K&nbsp;–&nbsp;12.&nbsp;&nbsp;He then attended Colby Junior College where he played baseball&nbsp;and then&nbsp;attended Fort Hays&nbsp;State University&nbsp;where he obtained a&nbsp;Bachelor&nbsp;degree in Athletic Training. &nbsp;He then&nbsp;obtained a Master’s Degree in&nbsp;Sports Administration&nbsp;from Western&nbsp;Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.&nbsp;After school, he moved to San Antonio where he remained to his passing.

Gordon was&nbsp;an Athletic Trainer/Teacher at&nbsp;Alamo Heights&nbsp;High School in San Antonio&nbsp;for over 35 years.

Gordon&nbsp;was united in marriage to Elsa Trevino. &nbsp;They made their home in San Antonio. &nbsp;He enjoyed motorcycle riding, helping friends and being involved with&nbsp;sports.&nbsp;He was an inspiration and touched many lives not only in the school district, but in everyone he met. &nbsp;He was a man of true grit, spirit, love and great determination.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gordon&nbsp;was injured in a motorcycle accident while returning home from school in April 2017. &nbsp;He was left paralyzed and spent many months in rehabilitation centers where he was an inspiration to patients and staff.

Gordon’s surviving family include his wife Elsa Garrett of the home; children, Kristin Schulte of Winfield,&nbsp;Alabama, Justin&nbsp;Garrett&nbsp;(Mandi) of San Diego, California and Jordan Garrett of San Antonio, Texas; step children, Jessica Morales (Jose) and Joshua Coronado (Megan); mother, Joan Weigel (Fred) of Russell, Kansas;&nbsp;brothers, Blaine Garrett (Janet) of&nbsp;Castle&nbsp;Rock,&nbsp;Colorado:&nbsp;sister, Diann&nbsp;Goodyear (Kenneth) of&nbsp;Manhattan, Kansas; step brother, Leon Weigel of Russell, Kansas; six grandchildren, Logan, Porter, Lexen, Sofia, Catalina and&nbsp;Julian.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Duane Garrett; grandparents, George and Eva&nbsp;Kaufman and Adam and Chloie Garrett.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. &nbsp;Burial of Ashes will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery. &nbsp;

Otte, were wheat farmers continuing in the tradition of Alvin’s family. 
Carol’s older siblings Linda and Ken, and younger sister Jan, moved to 
Salina, Kansas, in 1961. If you had asked Carol, this is where she grew 
up. She lived in Salina until she was 29. 
Along with her first husband Carol gave birth to her first daughter, 
Cari Anne, on March 14, 1972. With the help of her Mom, Carol returned 
to work at the investment firm IDS. For recreation Carol and Cari 
enjoyed motorcycle touring with her Mom and Dad, and other family 
members. (Her last bike was a full-dress, shaft-drive Honda CX-500 that 
had been modified by her Dad for one of his bi-annual Arctic Circle 
motorcycle trips.) 
Carol’s younger sister Jan, living in Lawrence, Kansas, set up a 
blind-date for Carol with someone Jan’s husband played with on a 
recreational softball team. That was May 9, 1981. Jeff Sanders was her 
date’s name. They were married just 4 months later on August 14, 1981. 
Several weeks after they were married, Carol moved to Olathe, Kansas 
where Jeff was employed. 
Carol gave birth to her second daughter, Arla June, on August 13, 1982. 
(This was one day short of their 1st Wedding Anniversary.) 
Carol was employed at Grinsted Products while residing in Olathe. In 
1991, Carol and Jeff agreed to a relocation because of Jeff’s work that 
took their family to Mt. Juliet, TN, just outside of Nashville. Cari 
chose to stay in Olathe to begin her own family with David Morgan. 
Carol enjoyed working at Mt. Juliet Chiropractic for the next 11 years. 
From 2002 to 2006 life meandered from Tennessee, to Kentucky, and then 
to New Hampshire in March 2006. They remained there until their 
retirement in July 2016. Retirement led them to again relocate, but this
 time it was not because of work. Instead the purpose of this move was 
to be near kids and grandkids. This brought Carol absolute joy! 
Starting in Tennessee Carol advanced her crafting skills, especially 
making Christmas cards for her daughters and herself using an 
ever-expanding collection of Stampin’ Up stamp sets. Not only was she 
really, really good at this, but enjoyed this as her 2nd favorite 
pastime, next to her grandkids and great-granddaughter! She delivered 
most of this year’s set of cards the day before she passed away. 
Carol is survived by: Her loving husband for 41 ½ years Robert Jeffrey 
(Jeff) Sanders, residing in Fortson, GA daughter Cari Anne Morgan, and 
husband David, residing in Fortson, Georgia, granddaughter Bailee Eileen
 Walsh, her husband Andrew great-granddaughter Elsie James Walsh 
granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Morgan grandson Adam James Morgan 
granddaughter Jillian May Morgan and Daughter Arla June Bell, and 
husband Jeffrey, residing in Seaford, Virginia granddaughter Lily Grace 
Bell and grandson Garrett Edward Bell; her sister Linda Struchen, and 
husband Don, residing in Marion, Iowa and her brother Kendall Otte, and 
wife Dixie, residing in Osage Beach, Missouri and sister Jan Henry, 
residing in Lawrence, Kansas.

ever-expanding collection of Stampin’ Up stamp sets. Not only was she 
really, really good at this, but enjoyed this as her 2nd favorite 
pastime, next to her grandkids and great-granddaughter! She delivered 
most of this year’s set of cards the day before she passed away. 
Carol is survived by: Her loving husband for 41 ½ years Robert Jeffrey 
(Jeff) Sanders, residing in Fortson, GA daughter Cari Anne Morgan, and 
husband David, residing in Fortson, Georgia, granddaughter Bailee Eileen
 Walsh, her husband Andrew great-granddaughter Elsie James Walsh 
granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Morgan grandson Adam James Morgan 
granddaughter Jillian May Morgan and Daughter Arla June Bell, and 
husband Jeffrey, residing in Seaford, Virginia granddaughter Lily Grace 
Bell and grandson Garrett Edward Bell; her sister Linda Struchen, and 
husband Don, residing in Marion, Iowa and her brother Kendall Otte, and 
wife Dixie, residing in Osage Beach, Missouri and sister Jan Henry,

Carol Lee Sanders (Otte)

Leona M. Graham, 92, of Salina, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2022.

Leona was born on April 10, 1930, to Frank and Agnes (Herrman) Klaus in Liebenthal, KS.

She moved to Salina in 1950 to go to Brown Mackie College. She met 
and married Wilbert J. (Bill) Graham on June 26, 1951. Bill precedes her
 in death.

Leona first worked for KSAL radio. She then was self-employed working
 from home rebuilding and refurbishing furniture while her family was 
young. After her daughters were grown, she worked for St. John’s 
Military School and later St. John’s Hospital/Salina Regional Health 
Center where she retired in 2006.

Leona was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and avid golfer and
 taught/coached junior golf at the Elks Country Club for many years. She
 loved the game until her health no longer allowed her to play.

She is survived by two daughters Tari Piskac (John) Manhattan KS, 
Diane Jayne (Ron Dawson) Salina KS., and three grandchildren, Steve 
Wilson (Juli) Salina KS, Taegan Jayne, Salina KS, Tish Schneider (Evan) 
Kdena, Okinawa, Japan. One great grandchild Finley Wilson, Salina KS.

A private family memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Tee or Kenwood View Nursing Center in care of Ryan Mortuary.

Thomas C. “Tom” Gatschet, 96, Hays, died Friday, December 9, 2022, at Via Christi Village.

He was born August 30, 1926, in Hays, 
the son of George W. and Agnes L. (Brull) Gatschet.&nbsp; In 1944, Tom 
graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy and in 1950 from Fort Hays 
State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.&nbsp; In August
 1948, he was united in marriage to Irene Satterlee, and they later 
divorced.&nbsp; In February 1974, he married Neva (Bell) Haerich, and they 
later divorced. &nbsp;Tom was an instructor of band, jazz band, and orchestra
 teaching at St. Joseph’s Military Academy and the Hays and Denver 
Public Schools.&nbsp; While living in Hays and Denver, he played in several 
dance bands.&nbsp; He earned his pilot’s license and was an executive officer
 with the Hays Civil Air Patrol and a private pilot. &nbsp;His memberships 
included St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Third Degree Knights
 of Columbus Council #1325, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree 
Assembly #282.

Survivors include his three sons: Tim 
Gatschet of Andover, Steve Gatschet and wife Lisa of Franktown, CO, and 
Mike Gatschet and wife Dianne of Lakewood, CO, a daughter: Anne Luke of 
Wichita, a son-in-law: Tracy McLaughlin of Seattle, WA, two brothers: 
Paul Gatschet and wife Carolyn and George Gatschet, both of Hays, 11 
grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, a daughter: Sarah McLaughlin, a brother: Francis Gatschet, a 
sister: Jean Winter, and a great granddaughter: Kelli Gatschet.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
with Fr. Fred Gatschet and Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Burial will 
follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 
8:00 on Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Saturday, all at Hays 
Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus 
will stand honor guard from 6:00 pm until 7:00, a vigil service will be 
at 7:00, followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of 
Columbus rosary, all on Friday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Carole Ruby Dunn, 86, longtime resident of Ogallala, NE, passed away Wednesday, December 7th, 2022, in North Platte, NE.

Carole was born June 25th, 1936, in Ogallala to Herb and Mary Davison. She attended Ogallala Public Schools, graduating in 1954.

On
 May 29th, 1954, she married Melvin W. Dunn in Ogallala, where they lived
 for many years before moving to their home in the country. She was 
employed at TRW, in real estate sales, and several local retail 
businesses before retiring.

Carole was a master seamstress, sewing
 clothing, Christmas pajamas, and quilts and rugs for all the family. 
She also enjoyed gardening and taking drives around the lake. She loved 
having all of her grandkids and great grandkids running around the farm.
 Carole will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.&nbsp;

Carole
 is survived by a son Melvin R. Dunn (Barb) of St. Francis, KS. Three 
daughters, Beth Hansmeier (Lonne), Laura Rivas (Luis), and Shiela 
Apolius all of Ogallala. A sister, Karen Green, of Ogallala, a brother 
Herbie Davison (Sunnee) of Lincoln, NE; fourteen grandchildren, Amber 
Faulkender (Tye) of St. Francis KS., Mandy Hovis of Plainville, KS., 
Dustin Dunn (Amber) of Wray, CO., Kelsey Dunn (Robert) of St Francis, 
KS., Zac Fornander (Nicki) of Sidney, NE., Molly Koehn (Kent) of 
Gothenburg, NE., Leon Hansmeier (Amanda) of Lincoln, NE., Martin Rivas

Tate James Martin, 17, died tragically of wounds suffered in a vehicle 
accident on Dec. 7th, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. 

Born on 
June 26th, 2005, in Hutchinson, KS to parents Casey and Michele (Booze) 
Martin, he was a lifetime Ellinwood resident and current Junior at 
Ellinwood High. Additionally, Tate worked&nbsp;alongside his father and 
enjoyed farm work. Tate loved to hunt, fish&nbsp;and spent any free time with
 friends and family. He was greatly loved by all those who knew him. 

Tate was very involved with the Ellinwood Energizers 4H Club and FFA 
Ellinwood HS Chapter and will be missed at these organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
He leaves behind parents Casey and Michele Martin; brother, Levi&nbsp;Martin;
 sisters, Haleigh Martin and Elizabeth Martin; grandparents, Steve and 
Terry Martin and Randy and Vickie Booze; and numerous aunts, uncles 
and&nbsp;cousins. Tate was preceded in death by his great-grandparents and 
uncle Bob Booze.&nbsp;

(Larry) Lillibridge of Manhattan, and Roger (Janice) Mallory of Duncan, 
OK.; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild and many nieces and

Aaron Fletcher Kraft, 71, passed away on December 9, 2022, at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on April 30, 
1951, in Cozad, Nebraska, the son of Harry and Eva (Griffis) Kraft.

Aaron was the manager of an oil reclaiming plant. He was member of 
the United Methodist Church in Utica. He was a member of the NRA.&nbsp; He 
married Candyce Smith on December 22, 1979, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.&nbsp;
