Phillipsburg resident Fostine Kay Gardner passed away on December 
20, 2022, at the Phillipsburg Retirement Center at the age of 83.&nbsp;

She was born on December 21, 1938, in Centralia, Illinois, to her parents Carl "Gene" Britt and Helen "Iris" (Whitten) Britt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fostine was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Iris Britt.&nbsp;

She was survived by her son, Bradford Parker of Phillipsburg, her two
 daughters, Kimberly Shields of Phillipsburg, and Loujena Cardenas of 
Hawthorne, Nevada, as well as 7 grandchildren and 14 great 
grandchildren.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date.&nbsp;

Frank Monroe McKay, son of Jack &amp; Ruth (Trouturine) McKay, was 
born May 17, 1934, in Kansas City.&nbsp; He passed away December 15, 2022, at 
the Andbe Home in Norton, KS at the age of 88.

He graduated high school &amp; then served his country in the 
United States Marine Corp. He was a farmer in Norton County, KS. After
 retiring, Frank moved to Lenora. Due to failing health, Frank entered 
the Andbe Home on November 30, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wives, Bernice &amp; Geraldine.

Frank is survived by his stepdaughter, Michele Ritchie of Lenora.

Cremation was chosen. No services are planned.

Mary Lou Schoenberger, known as "Lou Lou," was born on September
 9, 1955, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Henry and Pauline Geist.

Mary
 Lou is survived by her spouse, Dennis Schoenberger. Lou Lou is also 
survived by her daughter, Sheila Cox-Beam; her son, Curtis (Andie) Cox; 
her eight grandchildren, Kristen Clark, Shawn Beam, Jacob Cox, Alyssa 
Isenhour, Abbie Cox, Kannon Beam, Jessie Beam, and Jake Johnson; and her
 sister, Lucy (Cec) Wilson.

Services were Saturday, December 17, 2022, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis, Kansas.

Gary Austin, age 70, of Hays, Kansas, died Monday, December 12, 2022 at his home in Hays.&nbsp; 

Gary was born in Hays, Kansas, on March 
26, 1952, to Jackie Eugene and Mary Eloise (Hillegiest) Austin.&nbsp; He 
attended and graduated from Ventura High School in Ventura, California.&nbsp;
 He enjoyed spending time with his family, was an avid fisherman, and 
could be found making models, mainly historical replicas of military 
ships, tanks, and airplanes - he loved history.&nbsp; He will be remembered

Carole Joan Pfeifer, 85, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Sunday, December 18th, 2022.

Carole was born in Hays, Kansas, on August 3, 1937, a daughter of the late Ruth Marie (Gfeller) and Everett Garold Schmedemann.

Survivors
 include her husband, Marvin Pfeifer, of the home; son, Todd Pfeifer, 
(Tresa) of Salina, Kansas; 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; and

She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Joannie and Michael Plunkett.

Dennis Muck, 74, passed away December 18, 2022.  He was born November 24, 1948, in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Paul “Jake” and Betty (Chase) Muck.

Dennis and his parents owned and operated Muck’s Hy-Klas Market in Downs for many years.

Survivors include his sister, Cheryl (Lane) King of Farmer’s Branch, Texas; stepson, Chris (Mandy) Burda of Downs, step-daughter, Shannon (Mitch) Hempler of Norton, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and numerous cousins and friends.

Dennis Muck

Linda Lee Lakes, 79, of Salina, Kan., passed away Sunday, December 
18, 2022. She was born on March 24, 1943, in Pontiac, Mich., to Rufus 
and Nadean (Underwood) Jamison, and raised on the family farm near 
Quinter, Kan.

Linda had a long career in education, beginning as an English teacher
 in Atwood, before transitioning to special education in the Colby and 
Salina school districts. She retired as Director of the Salina Special 
Education Cooperative. Linda loved family gatherings, entertaining, and 
traveling. She, and husband, Glen, were fortunate to establish very dear
 and close friendships while in Salina.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Glen Lakes, of the home; children,
 Lee Eisenbise (Charolette), El Dorado, Kan., Melissa Norton (Brian), 
Woodland, Calif., and Rick Lakes, Brainerd, Minn.; grandchildren, 
Brandon Norton, Woodland, Calif., Allison Norton, Spokane, Wash., and 
Ryan Jones (Kelsey), Douglas, Kan.; and great-grandchildren, Collin and 
Landon Jones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and stepfather, John Warren Jacks.

Robert 'Rob' Blackford

Darlene F. Lewis, age 90, lifetime Concordia resident, left this 
earthly life on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at her home in rural 
Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born April 8, 1932, to Norman and Christine 
(Davidson) Lapo.

Darlene was a 1950 graduate of Concordia High School, Concordia, Kansas.

She married Don Lewis on Feb. 1, 1953, at The Baptist Church, Concordia.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on September 2, 2010.&nbsp;

She
 worked as a telephone operator for Ma Bell for several years.&nbsp; Darlene 
was also a wonderful mother, homemaker, where she was always preparing 
many meals for their farm family.

Darlene was a member of The 
Baptist Church, Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She helped in the kitchen for many 
funeral dinners and special church events.

She enjoyed baking, her
 coffee friends, her neighborhood Christmas gatherings, college football
 and basketball, was a KC Royals and Chiefs fan.&nbsp; Darlene was great at 
spreading her cheer by remembering family birthdays and sending cards to
 her family and friends at times of need.&nbsp;&nbsp; She truly loved spending 
time with his beloved family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 
friends.&nbsp; Darlene most importantly loved her Lord and read her Bible 
faithfully daily.

Darlene is survived by her daughters Kayleen 
Lewis, Concordia, KS; Kelly Schulze and husband Steve, Hays, KS; 
Jennifer Odette and husband Joe, Concordia, KS; grandchildren Cody 
Odette (Hattie) Concordia, KS; Cyle Odette (companion Mackenzie 
Mossman), Des Moines, IA; Colton Odette (Madi), Concordia, KS; Spencer 
Schulze (Leah) Coronado, CA; great-grandchildren, Brantley, Wesson, and 
Jackson; special niece Judy Salley (Ron), Rogers, AR; special

Darlene F. Lewis

Mitzi Lee Naylor Schwien was born to Santa Monica, California couple Harold Lee Jr. and Carol Jean Naylor on October 24, 1963, less than a year after her “Irish twin” sister, Tami Lynne (Lloyd) Pruett, who survives her. The following year, her brother, Michael Shawn, who awaits her in heaven, was born sleeping. She is also survived by her sister Sandra Amato. Mitzi’s parents both predecease her. 

As a young child, Mitzi’s family relocated to Arizona, which will forever be home to a piece of Mitzi’s heart. While in Arizona, Mitzi brought her four precious children into this world, all of whom survive her: Douglas Lee Allen, Lynette Marie Allen, James Joseph Hack, Jr., and Sasha Ann Hack. Mitzi’s children were her world, and she never missed an opportunity to boast how proud she was of their many accomplishments. Mother was the most important job for Mitzi. 

In 1994, Mitzi and her young children moved to Kansas where she finally met and married her one true soulmate, Mitchell Lee Schwien, at their favorite spot in Antioch Park. Mitch and his three young sons, Jason (Jennifer), Joshua, and Jacob Schwien, all of whom also survive Mitzi, were welcomed into her world to be doted on, cooked for, and treated like her own. Mitch and Mitzi gave their seven rambunctious kids a home full of love. Mitzi also loved being a grandma and aunt. Mitzi’s grandchildren are Benjamin, David, Nolan, Adrian, Ahnalee, Lydia, and Gabriel. She had four nieces and nephews and a dozen great-nieces and nephews. All survive her and will miss her dearly. Mitch’s sisters, Torri and Michelle, considered Mitzi a sister too and spent hours gabbing with her every chance they got. In her later years in Western Kansas, Mitzi and Mitch became close to Jim Mollenkamp, their mailman by chance and best friend by choice. Mitzi also endeared herself to individuals all over the world via internet, so the ripples of her passing travel thousands of miles. Countless pets in heaven now have their two-legged momma back. If you were lucky enough to be loved by Mitzi, then you got phone calls on your birthday, an abundance of “squishy hugs,” gifts for no reason, healing stones and prayers when you were unwell, and the blessing of a real friend. Mitzi endeavored to know her purpose in life, the good in all people, the wonder of nature, and the miracle of what’s beyond. She never met a stranger. A lifelong learner, Mitzi earned several degrees, had a deep thirst for knowledge, and read dozens of books each year. On December 8, 2022, at home with her husband by her side, Mitzi passed away peacefully. She was taken too young but has been spared the pain of her debilitating condition. Connect with a long-lost relative or friend, learn something new, feed a stranger, make a difference in someone’s day, or just loan your ear and maybe your shoulder to a person who’s hurting. Mitzi Schwien

Joyce Bortz Saelens, 88, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2022 
at Columbine West Health and Rehab. Joyce was born on August 12, 1934 to
 William Lavern and Velma Mae (Boyd) Amerine in Great Bend, KS. She grew
 up on a farm outside of Great Bend where she was involved in 4-H and 
orchestra. Joyce attended and graduated from Great Bend High School in 
1952.

Joyce married her first love, Eugene “Gene” W. Bortz, on August 12, 
1952 at First Methodist Church in Great Bend. After their wedding, they 
moved to a family farm outside of Timken and the following year they 
welcomed twins, Galen and Gail, into their family. Later they lived in 
Great Bend, KS, Lincoln, NE, and Richardson, TX. In 1988, Gene passed 
away suddenly and Joyce moved around to San Antonio, TX, Great Bend, KS,
 Fort Collins, CO, and Loveland, CO. On April 22, 1995, Joyce married 
Frank Saelens in a ceremony at First Presbyterian Church in Fort 
Collins, CO and they made their home in Loveland.

Throughout her life, Joyce worked at Woolworth, several banks, 
LaQuinta Motor Inns as a Manager and Instructional Coordinator. When she
 moved to Fort Collins, she worked for Nadent South. She was a member of
 First Methodist Church in Great Bend and First Presbyterian Church in 
Fort Collins where she served as a Stephen Minister. She was also a 
member of Sesostris Patrol Wives, Daughters of the Nile, and the 
American Institute of Banking.

Joyce loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
 She was such a loving and nurturing person to those people in her life.
 She was happiest spending time with her loved ones, working in her 
flower gardens, bird watching, doing puzzles, and decorating her house 
for the holidays.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Frank of Loveland, CO; her brother,
 Richard (Marlene) Amerine of Hoisington, KS; her son, Galen (Diane) 
Bortz of Moorcroft, WY; and her daughter, Gail (JD) Mullen of Fort 
Collins, CO. She is also survived by her step-children, Keri 
Christensen, Mike (Wendy) Saelens, and Daryl Saelens; grandchildren, 
Jeanette Nelson, William Bortz, Chelsea Mullen, Jamie Mullen, and Kelsey
 Christensen; and numerous great-grandchildren and 
great-great-grandchildren. Joyce will be missed by all those who knew 
and loved her.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 
2022, at Bryant Fuenral Home, in Great Bend, KS, with Reverend Joseo 
Smeragliuolo presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Joyce Bortz Saelens

Barbara “Pauline” Cheney, 88, died peacefully at her home Dec. 7, 
2022, in Hill City, Kansas. She was born on her family farm near 
Blackwell, Kay County, Oklahoma. Pauline was the sixth child of Vernon 
Lee and Myrtle Orene (Curtis) Rowe. She attended grade school in rural 
Kay County, and graduated in 1952 from Blackwell High School. In her 
youth, she was a Blackwell Church of God member and loved to sing gospel
 in harmony with her sisters. She worked as copy editor for the local 
newspaper, and everyone who knew Pauline, knew her spelling and 
handwriting was impeccable. A young man waited outside of her church to 
ask Pauline’s dad for permission to date her, and a love story that 
lasted decades began. She married Kenneth Edwin Cheney October 9, 1952, 
in Blackwell, Oklahoma. To this union, three children were born: Kenneth
 Greg, Kirk Alan, and Kim Rene’.

The Army took Kenneth 
and Pauline to El Paso, Texas, and Boston, Massachusetts. Pauline stayed
 in Oklahoma with their firstborn son, while Kenneth finished his tour 
in Alaska. Afterwards, the couple lived in southeastern Kansas until the
 oilfield transferred them to Hill City in 1961, where Pauline spent the
 majority of her remaining life (with the exception of a few years in 
Great Bend) as a homemaker and much more. She was office manager and 
partner in Cheney Testing Company for 15 years, then supported her 
husband in their farm and cattle business. After Kenneth passed, she 
managed books and shared in the farm operation with her son.

Many
 local kids grew up calling Pauline “Grandma Cheney”; she and Kenneth 
opened up their home, swimming pool, and travels to them. The couple 
loved to host friends and family. Friday nights out with friends, 
followed by cards, was rarely missed. Family summers were spent at local
 lakes. They took trips to Ozark cabins with friends and family, where 
Pauline loved to attend her favorite Branson shows. She enjoyed year 
round trips to the Lake Dillon area. On vacation, Pauline could be found
 relaxing by Rocky Mountain lakes and streams, or holding on for dear 
life as Kenneth “explored” the Rockies in their jeep! Pauline seldom 
missed morning coffee at the cafe with her friends. She was an avid 
reader, who often read one book per day. She embroidered, and discovered
 the love of quilting in her middle years. She was an amazing cook - her
 fried chicken and her Hershey’s chocolate cake were among everyone’s 
favorites. She loved hosting holidays, and even in her later years, 
family gathered at “Grandma’s." Great-Grandma always had a special 
cookie stash by her chair for little ones visiting and she hardly ever 
missed Wheel of Fortune. Pauline loved to decorate her home for the 
holidays which brought much joy to her family. Pauline dearly loved her 
children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren. She enjoyed attending 
grand’s and great’s birthdays and events, and when she couldn’t be with 
family, she cherished viewing their online photos over and over again.

Pauline
 is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, her brother 
George Rowe, and sisters Ollie Crawford, Laverne Wilson, Dorothy 
Fauchier and Francis Wilson. Pauline leaves behind these to grieve her 
passing: sons Greg (Dana) Cheney of Lenexa, Kansas, and Kirk Cheney 
(Brenda Dinkel) of Bogue, and daughter Kim (Wayne) Pfeifer of Hill City;
 grandchildren Jason (Mandy) Cheney, Valley Center; Kendra (Wiley) 
McBride and children McKena, Kaden and Kamden of Hays; Aaron (Julia) 
Cheney and daughters Nichole and Melissa of Olathe; Casey (Jamie) Quint 
and sons Devin and Finley of Weldona, Colo.; Erica (Ian) Kohart and son 
Sam of Tomball, Texas; Zachary Cheney of Kansas City, Mo. and his 
daughter Leia of Broken Arrow, Okla.; Collin Pfeifer and Trista Wysong 
and their son Kenneth of Hill City; sister-in-law Norma Peres, Braman,

Gerald “Gary” Eugene Moore was born on September 15, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to his father, Charles Eugene Moore and his mother, Ida Louise Moore. He passed away on December 17, 2022 in Garden City, Kansas. 

He attended Grades 1-12 in Oakley, Kansas and then completed a BS and MS in Art at Fort Hays State University. During his time there, he married Judith Kay Rasmussen on August 27, 1966 in Oakley. He taught secondary school art for one year in Wakeeney, Kansas, before being drafted into the U.S. Army on June 24, 1969. He was assigned to the Americal Division as a Chaplain’s Assistant, 196th Infantry Brigade, with headquarters in Chu Lai, Vietnam. After his return home in December of 1970, Gary taught high school art in Hays while completing certification for school administration. In 1976, during his first year of working as a school principal, Gary and Judy’s son, Jason Errol Moore, was born. 

He worked as a principal in Centralia, Ransom, and Montezuma, Kansas. In 1979, he entered the finance and insurance business in Montezuma and then Sacramento, California until his retirement in 2006. Gary had a wide range of interests which included hunting, fishing, golfing, painting, sculpting, jewelry-making, photography, ceramics, gardening, and cooking. In 2019, the Garden City Community College hosted a retrospective art show reflecting his work over the previous 50 years. He also wrote a book - "The Journey Back" - which depicts his time in Vietnam during the war as well his trip back in 2005 to discover the beauty and tranquility of the country that had blossomed since the destruction caused by the war. In 2007, Gary and Judy retired to Garden City, Kansas where they enjoyed being involved in the lives of Jason, his wife Angela, and their then two year old Lilly, who had him wrapped around her little finger. 

Friends and family will remember his big personality and his even bigger laugh. His crude language had a unique charm and he always knew how to bring humor to any situation. What stood out the most though, was his unconditional love and kindness for his family.&nbsp;

Charlotta M. “Char” Klaus, 81, Hays, died Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Downs Care and Rehab.

She was born February 17, 1941, in Hays,
 the daughter of Herman and Oma (Schutts) Haddock.&nbsp; In 1959, she 
graduated from Hays High School.&nbsp; On November 18, 1960, she was united 
in marriage to Nicholas J. Klaus, Jr., and they were married nearly 46 
years before he preceded her in death on October 14, 2006. &nbsp;&nbsp;She was a 
longtime member of Hays Church of the Nazarene and a homemaker who loved
 to sew clothes for her daughters, help as an assistant leader with the 
Girl Scouts, and stay active with her children as she took them to their
 many activities.&nbsp; Charlotta was a fan of Elvis Presley and John Wayne, 
enjoyed reading romance novels, and had a love for animals and children.

Survivors include her three sons: 
Sammual Klaus and wife Amy, Craig Klaus, and Kristopher McCormick and 
wife Jordynne, all of Hays, three daughters: Terri (Klaus) Wagstaff and 
husband Russ, Dee (Klaus) Beougher, and Nicole (Klaus) Nansel and 
husband Mark, all of Hays, two brothers: David Haddock and wife Cathy of
 Hays and Jack Haddock and wife JoAnn of Munjor, two sisters: Judy Allen
 of Topeka and Oma Dee Milledge and husband Rick of Kiowa, two 
sisters-in-law: Carolyn Haddock of Attica and Toni Haddock of Casper, 
WY, 21 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

Charlotta M. 'Char' Klaus

Karen Eileen Davis, 76, passed away December 19, 2022, at her home in
 Great Bend. She was born February 12, 1946, at Monta Vista, Colo., to 
Isaac &amp; Helen (Reimer) Rempel. She married Paul Davis September 9, 
1966, in Denver, Colo.

Coming from Denver, Colo., in 2001, Karen was a Great Bend resident. 
She was a cosmetologist by trade and loved what she did. She was a 
member of Faith Community Church. Karen enjoyed painting, crafts and 
decorating, especially interior decorating.

Survivors include, her husband, Paul Davis of the home; two 
daughters, Michelle Jarvis of Livingston, Tex. and Charlonda Wells of 
Ellinwood; a sister, Kathy Dahmer of Castle Rock, Colo.; ten 
grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren with one to arrive in March 
2023. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Abe, 
Vernon and Randall Rempel; and two sisters, Evelyn Ennis and Mary 
Rempel.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, 
December 21, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends
 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.,

Bubba Bryon James Dowling, age 46, passed away Friday, December 16, 
2022, at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS.  He was 
born June 3, 1976, in Mason City, IA to Dan Leroy and Martha Louise 
(King) Dowling.  He was a Sergeant for the Smith County Kansas Sheriff’s
 Department.

Survivors include his wife Heather; children Anna, 
Nathan, Luke, Esther, Miriam and Johanna; brother Darin (Lora) Dowling; 
sister Danielle (Nicole) Dowling; brother-in-law Kevin (Chantel) Guiter;
   three nephews and five nieces;   his Spiritual Dad, Mark (Kristie)

Bubba Bryon James Dowling

Helen LaVonne Van Amburg, 89, died peacefully December 17, 2022, at 
Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.&nbsp; She was born September 23, 
1933, in Atwood, KS, to Clarence and Berniece (McClaury) Young.

Helen graduated from Beloit High School in 1952. She retired as manager for Motel 6 in Hays.

On May 22, 1955, she married Leslie Eugene “Gene" Van Amburg.&nbsp; He 
died January 9, 2021, after they shared over 66 years of marriage.

Helen is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Karen Heller of Hutchinson and 
Carol Sommers (Allon) of Manhattan; grandchildren, Steven Heller of 
Hutchinson, Robyn Bonner (Bo) of Des Moines, IA, Lainen Bayer (Jake) and
 Joseth Sommers, all of Manhattan; seven great-grandchildren; and one 
great-great-grandson (due May 2023).

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Young.

Private graveside service is planned at Round Springs Cemetery, 
Hunter, KS.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. &nbsp;Wednesday,

heaven’s gates by those who passed before her, her mother, Clara Riddle 
in 2006, son, Cory Nickel in 1969, brother Marshall Manning in 1962 and 
sister, Lila Walz in 2011.

Marcia was born on June 14, 1945, in Oberlin, Kansas, to Clarence “Bud”
 and Clara (Counter) Manning.&nbsp; The family moved to Oakley in the early 
1950s.&nbsp; Marcia graduated from Oakley High School in 1963.&nbsp; She 
eventually moved to Salina and married Michael Carter on November 9, 
1979.

Marcia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1987.&nbsp; Although she 
faced many health challenges related to this diagnosis, her unwavering 
faith in Jesus Christ compelled her to maintain a positive attitude and 
outlook on life that is, and always will be, an example to us all.

Left to mourn her passing is her husband Michael; stepfather, Roy 
Riddle; sons, Dion (Mary) Nickel, Troy (Susan) Nickel, all of Salina; 
granddaughters, Miranda (Preston) Murchison, of Lenexa, KS, Sandra 
(Brett) Jensen, of Waxhaw, NC, Savannah (Jack) Mangelsdorf, of Lawrence,

Rita J. Avila, 65, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, November 
30, 2022, at her home in Russell.  Rita was born on December 3, 1956, 
in Plainville, Kansas, the daughter of Stanley L. and Mary Lou (Simons) 
Richmond.  She grew up in Plainville, Kansas, and graduated from 
Plainville High School.  She worked for many years with Developmental

Donald C.&nbsp;“Don”&nbsp;Malin, of Plainville, KS, passed away on December 16, 2022, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, at the age of 84. He was born on May 20, 1938, to Francis P. and Maxine (Colvin) Malin in Codell, KS.&nbsp;Being born on Cyclone Day, Don came into this world&nbsp;early at&nbsp;only 2&nbsp;lbs&nbsp;6 oz and wasn’t expected to live&nbsp;through the night. At 16 years old, Don escaped another demise when a car accident landed him in a body cast for six&nbsp;months resulting in a leg amputee.&nbsp;

Don&nbsp;grew up&nbsp;helping&nbsp;on the farm and&nbsp;attended school&nbsp;in&nbsp;Codell&nbsp;until his accident.&nbsp;He&nbsp;worked asa Roughneck in the oil field&nbsp;during his early years and&nbsp;later worked with his father at Malin Backhoe Trenching&nbsp;for 20 years. He also did auto body work throughout his life. Don was always tinkering and could fix ANYTHING. He loved to restore old cars, especially his Sedan. A scout leader for many years, good storyteller, and historian, many referred to Don as “Big Mo” and “Papa Don."&nbsp;

Don is survived by his children: Shawn Hearld (Carla) of Hays, KS, Justin Hearld (Megan Brown) of Hays, KS, and Angie Armbruster (Lance) of Plainville; siblings: Robert “Bob” Malin (Carol) of Plainville, Virginia Lumpkins of Plainville, Peggy Jore (Jim) of Salina, KS, Betty Davidson (Craig) of Plainville, and Phil Malin of Salina, KS; nine grandchildren: Derek Hearld (Aubrey), Hannah Hearld, Cheyenne Armbruster-Wahrman (Alex), Sage Armbruster, Kyle&nbsp;Nesslinger, Lakota Hearld, Chloe Hearld, Trenton Brown, and Makala Brown; two great-grandchildren: Hudson Hearld and Avery Hearld;&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;nieces and nephews; and many who know him as “Papa Don”. &nbsp;

It has been said, “kindness is like a seed that when cultivated will continue to grow”.&nbsp;<a></a>Don was a kind man with a heart of gold. Never would you hear him complain when others might say he had a lot he could complain about.&nbsp;He was a man of&nbsp;passion and drive who never let anything stand in his way, not even&nbsp;his&nbsp;disability. His love of, and service to, his family, friends, and community knew no bounds. He taught us by his daily example that a dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 10:30 AM, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, 5PM until 8PM&nbsp;with the family receiving friends 5PM until the&nbsp;Vigil Service at 7PM at the funeral home in Plainville.&nbsp;

Patsy Lynn Ostmeyer, 87, Oakley, Kansas, passed away Saturday, December 
17, 2022, at Logan County Hospital. Patsy was born March 13, 1935, in 
Oakley, Kansas, the daughter of Harry C. and Vivian (Turner) Sowers. She
 married Don Ostmeyer on October 29, 1956. She worked at Dean Organ 
Jewelry for several years and worked on the Ostmeyer family farm as a 
homemaker. Once retired to Grinnell, Kansas, she managed the Hometown 
Grocery Store where she worked until 2014. She moved to her most recent 
home in 2017 as a resident of the Logan County Hospital Independent 
Living Apartments in Oakley, Kansas. 
Patsy touched many lives as a hardworking, friendly and kind-hearted 
person. Alongside being a devoted wife, she was dedicated to being 
present in her children’s lives. She never missed a sporting event. 
Christmas was her favorite time of year, especially since she loved to 
see family. Patsy was multifaceted and could tell a story like no other —
 especially the farm stories of her driving the tractor or assisting 
with the cattle. She was an excellent cook (her fried chicken and 
cinnamon bread were remarkable). She loved to dance, play golf, card 
games (bridge, pitch), and to be around her friends. Anyone that knew 
Patsy knew she had a passion for the Kansas City Chiefs and kept that 
spirit alive for over 50 years. 
She was a member of the Angelus and Grinnell Alter Society. 
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, Harry C. and Vivian Sowers; 
husband, Donald Fred Ostmeyer; her siblings, Juanita Beckman, Harry Dean
 Sowers, LoRee Jolly and Jay Sowers. 
She is survived by her children, Grant (Maureen) Ostmeyer, Stacy (Greg) 
Tholen, Toni (Randall) Hubert, and Jill (Jim) Alexander; her 
grandchildren, Chris (Lesley Schmidt) Ostmeyer, Chase (Faren) Ostmeyer,

Patsy Lynn Ostmeyer

Ronald D. Crook, 85, died on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at Founders 
Comfort Care Home in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on July 16, 1937, in 
La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Gerald Dean &amp; Margie A. (Renner) Crook.
 He married Linda Long on December 26, 1960, in Lamar, Colorado. He 
later married Carole A. Stewart on April 7, 1984, in Selkirk, Kansas. 
She died on February 16, 2001. 
Ron graduated from Garden City High School with the Class of 1955 and 
received his Associates Degree from Garden City Community College in 
1957. He worked at a junkyard, ice plant and Anthony’s for three years 
before moving to Lamar, Colorado to be the manager of the J.C. Penny’s 
Store. After one year, he moved back to Garden City, Kansas and worked 
at the Family Booterie for 24 years. In 1978 he bought Renick Drug 
Store and turned it into Crook’s Shoe Store, which he operated until 
retiring. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Garden City
 Downtown Vision, active in the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce and
 his 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM Coffee Clubs. He enjoyed hunting and fishing,
 past member of Southwest Kansas Sports Car Club of America and loved 
watching NASCAR. 
He is survived by his Daughter - Teri Hensen of Castle Rock, Colorado, 
Son – Jim &amp; Dawn Crook of Montrose, Colorado, Son – Monte &amp; 
Allison Stewart of Belle Plaine, Daughter – Cheryl &amp; Steve Kucharik 
of Scott City, Sister – Rhonda &amp; Randy Magnison of Holton, Kansas, 7
 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 
his Parents, Wife, Brother – Jay Crook and 2 Sisters – Mary Lou Jackson 
and Vivian Huelskamp. 
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 
Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View 
Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.

Ronald D. Crook

Phyllis Jean (Eiler) Metcalf was born on May 17, 1932, the youngest 
of eight children, on a farm about 2 miles north of Oberlin. The house 
was blown away by a tornado in 1942, then the family moved to a house 
about half-mile west to Howard and Lena (Reasoner) Eiler farm.

Phyllis finished her work here on earth and entered into heaven on December 17, 2022, at the age of 90.

Phyllis
 attended grade and high school in Oberlin, graduating in 1950.  She 
worked at the Farmers National Bank till her marriage to Dole Metcalf on
 July 8, 1954, and they moved to his parents’ farmstead in Harlan 
township the following year.  It was there that they raised their 2 
children Patricia Ann and Joseph Kent.

Farm activities were the 
major project of her living on the farm along with gardening and cooking
 many meals, in addition to being a member and serving the Prairie 
Chapel United Methodist Church.  She was also a member of the UMW and 
American Legion Auxiliary which she was president for 4 years and helped
 with many projects.

In 1991, she and Dole retired from the farm 
and moved to Oberlin.  It was then Phyllis took up a new profession 
after many years of volunteering she became a CNA and worked at the Good
 Samaritan Center for over 20 years.  A job she really enjoyed and 
served on many committees.

She leaves her two children: Pat Ranz 
of Fertile, MN and Joe (Lolita) Metcalf of Danbury, NE; grandchildren: 
Eric Ranz of Thornton, CO, Julie (Sam) Morales of Thornton, CO, Alex 
(Emily) Ranz of Ada, MN, Brandon (Bryanna) Metcalf of Wilson, KS, Marci 
(Dave) Scott of Chesapeake, VA; great grandchildren: Arielle Ranz, 
Braden Fortin, Elsie Ranz, Tove Ranz, Embersyn Ranz, Axten Ranz, Noah 
Scott, Melody Scott, Lane Metcalf, Kambrie Metcalf, and Brayer Metcalf; 
as well as many nieces and nephews.  Phyllis was preceded in death by 
her husband, Dole, in 2011; siblings: Brian and Estelle in infancy, 
Robert in 1948, Margaret (Lloyd) Hurlbut, Pauline (Vern) Loomis, Floyd 
(Mary) Eiler, and Harry (Beverly) Eiler; son-in-law: Steven Ranz and 
great grandson: David George Scott III.

Funeral services will be 
Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church 
of Oberlin.  Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 
20, 2022, at Pauls Funeral Home.  Family will receive guest from 
5:00-7:00 PM.  Burial will be in Oberlin Cemetery.

Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on February 5, 1921, in Manford, Oklahoma, the 
daughter of Robert James and Belle Zickaffos Lewis.&nbsp; A resident of Scott
 City, Kansas since 1939 moving from Ness City, Kansas, she was a Avon 
Salesman and a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas.

On October 26, 1939, she married Herman Funk in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on February 29, 2000, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Three Sons - Larry &amp; Sharolyn Funk of 
Garden City, Kansas, Robert &amp; Anita Funk of Scott City, Kansas, 
Kelly Funk of Scott City, Kansas, One Daughter - &nbsp;Sheila &amp; Roy Boyd 
of Scott City, Kansas, Eleven Grandchildren, Eighteen Great 
Grandchildren, and Sixteen Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband - Herman, One
