Robert Henry Helfrich, 73, passed away at his home January 19, 2023, surrounded by his wife and children, after suffering complications during his treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Robert was born November 1, 1949, to Henry and Philomene (Bogner) Helfrich, in Spearville, Kansas. Robert graduated from Spearville High School in 1967. He was the quarterback of the football team, center on the basketball team, and pitcher for the baseball team.
He graduated from Fort Hays State University, earning degrees in Physics and Mathematics. He then went on to Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in Computer Science. Robert moved to Hutchinson and spent nearly 30 years with Superior Boilerworks, working his way up from computer programmer to General manager. After it sold, he spent time at Chaparrall Industries, Shield Industries, and AIRGAS. Upon his retirement, he was able to freely enjoy his true passion: cycling. Aside from riding, he became a USA Cycling Official as well as a race promoter.
Later he got the long distance cycling bug. He rode thousands of miles a year, which garnered him the nickname "Bad Bobby". He often rode his bicycle to KSU football games in Manhattan. One of his most exciting trips was when he rode solo to his sister's home near Washington, D.C.
After a cycling career that began in the mid 80's, consisting of racing, promoting, and officiating, he was inducted into the Kansas Cycling Association Hall Of Fame in 2022. He was active in his community as well. He served on the Reno County Vitality Team, working hard to make Hutchinson a safer and more enjoyable place for walking, running and cycling. He volunteered consistently whenever an event was being held.
He loved being a dad. He was actively involved in scouting, helping both sons achieve their Eagle Scout awards. Following 20 years of service to Scouting, he received the Boy Scouts of America District Award of Merit in 2004.
His greatest joy in life was being a grandfather to Ryder and Chase. They created a strong and loving bond. He was always happiest being Papa. He will leave a void in his family and community.
He is survived by; his wife Kathleen (Yadon) Helfrich, sons Andrew (Heather) and Anthony (Katie), and his two grandsons Ryder and Chase, sisters, Jeanette Helfrich (John Rayner), Linda Dermyer (Tom), Irene Barkman (Rick), and brother, Glenn Helfrich (Sandy), along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
