LoAnn Carolyn Sechtem, 81, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

LoAnn was born on March 9, 1941, in rural Hoisington, Kansas, as the first child of Homer and Alvina (Karst) Eurich.&nbsp; When her father died in an explosion, LoAnn was only a year old.&nbsp; Her mother then moved LoAnn and her sister Marjorie to the family farm with Alvina’s parents, William and Lydia Karst.&nbsp; The family’s language of choice was German until Alvina met and married Calvin Templeton, a soldier from West Virginia who had been stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Kansas.&nbsp; Calvin was a model stepfather, graciously raising both girls as his own.&nbsp; The family enjoyed country living until the two girls were of school age, when the family then moved into Russell.&nbsp; The family enjoyed the birth of another sister, Diana, then later, through adoption, the girls’ cousin Alan became their baby brother.&nbsp; LoAnn was active in many school activities, including the school marching band and even a dance band, playing the coronet (trumpet).&nbsp; She participated in gymnastics, and excelled in trampoline.&nbsp; LoAnn favored business classes (shorthand, bookkeeping and typing) and graduated near the top of her class.&nbsp; After high school, she worked at the Russell State Bank and later at the accounting firm now known as Gudenkauf &amp; Malone.&nbsp; She assisted the family in the woodworking businesses and ultimately worked out of the home as a self-employed bookkeeper for local businesses.

Several years after high school, LoAnn married her high school sweetheart, Gale Sechtem, and three children (Philip, John and Julie) were born to that union.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking, hosting large family meals, watching tennis, KU Basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving family include her sons, Phillip Sechtem and wife Josefina “Jo” of Provo, Utah; and John Sechtem of Russell, Kansas; and daughter, Julie Sechtem of Russell, Kansas; sister, Marjorie Reinhardt of Denver, Colorado; and brother Alan Templeton of Russell, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Diana Brown.

A celebration of LoAnn’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Dorrance.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

Carol Joan Reynolds, 93, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, 
February 8, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing 
Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Carol was born December 25, 1929, in Chase, Kansas, the daughter of 
Herman and Sarah (Scott) Bayer.&nbsp; She was a resident of Rush County, 
Kansas, for 70 years, moving from Chase, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a 1946 
graduate of Chase High School, Chase, Kansas, and received her Bachelor 
of Science Degree in Education from Fort Hays Kansas State College, 
Hays, Kansas.

On February 8, 1952, she married Bill Reynolds at the Community 
Presbyterian Church, Chase, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death December 
5, 1997.

Carol was a teacher for 41 years before her retirement on July 1, 
1994.&nbsp; She began her teaching career, and taught kindergarten at USD 403
 Otis-Bison.&nbsp; Along with her 41 years as a teacher, she tutored many 
students outside of her classroom, and was active in her local teachers 
association.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas; 
NEA (National Education Association); Kansas NEA; a former member of the
 State Library of Kansas Board, and she served a three year term on the 
Kansas Reading Circle Committee.

Carol volunteered at the Walnut Valley Senior Center, and the Rush 
Center Library, both of &nbsp;Rush Center, Kansas.&nbsp; She also volunteered for 
many church boards and women’s groups.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her daughter, Debra and Lee Oelkers, Hays, 
Kansas; two granddaughters, Carolyn and Scott Payne, and Michelle and 
Dylan Quigley; five grandchildren, Katie, Anna, and Stella Payne, and 
Aubrey and Kobie Quigley; and two sisters, Esther Delimont, Lebanon, 
Kansas, and Elizabeth Bomba, San Antonio, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, 
Floyd Bayer; three sisters, Elnora Bayer, Louise Carlson, and Shirley 
Schendzielos; and an infant sister.

Memorial service will be Monday, February 20, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at 
the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Scott 
Tempero officiating.&nbsp; A private family interment in the Locust Hill 
Cemetery, Rush Center, Kansas, has taken place.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the

Thomas "Tom" Allen Koerner, 79, Hays, 
died February 6, 2023, at home.&nbsp; He was&nbsp; born July 11, 1943, in Hays, KS to 
Joseph and Bertha (Miller) Koerner and grew up in Hays.

He married Sheila Sheck and later 
married Judy K. Giebler on June 11, 1977, in Hays. He was a&nbsp; 1961 
graduate of St. Joseph’sMilitary Academy, joined the Air Force after 
graduation and was stationed in Korea and Okinowa during the Viet Nam 
era. He was a City Commissioner 1975-79, received his degree in Criminal
 Justice and worked at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility as 
Staff Development Specialist. Tom worked in Pest Control, Farmers State 
Bank Loan Officer and many different jobs.

His memberships included Immaculate 
Heart of Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of 
Columbus Council #6984, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights 
of Columbus Assembly. His careers in law enforcement were: Sergeant with
 Staff Development at Larned Mental Health Correctional Facility, Police
 Officer with the Hays Police Dept., Sheriff’s Deputy with Ellis County 
Sheriff’s Dept.

On January 3, 2009, he was ordained a 
Permanent Deacon with the Salina Diocese and served at Immaculate of 
Heart Mary Church in Hays, KS until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of the home,
 a son, Scott Koerner (Vicki), daughter Christine Torres (Jesse), 
daughter Wanda Sue Keefover (Mike), son Bob Herman, brother Randy 
Koerner (Wanda); Sister-in-law Nancy Leiker, 7 grandchildren; 6 
step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 15 step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents
 and a daughter Terra Davis,&nbsp; brothers Myron (Skip), Joseph Koerner, 
&amp; a brothers-in-law, Fred Weber, Jr., Lee Allan Leiker, a step great
 grandson, Aiden Keefover.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM&nbsp; 
Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

Thomas 'Tom' Allen Koerner

Maurice “Joe” Farrell, 86, resident of Hill City, Kansas, passed away February 6, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital.

Joe
 was born May 25, 1936, in Rural Graham County on the family farm south 
of Hill City to James and Eunice (Herbert) Farrell. Being raised on a 
farm, Joe had a love for animals. He told his grandchildren numerous 
stories about the family’s dog, Gyp, and their Shetland pony Cricket. 
Joe attended IXL School (I Excel), which his grandparents had helped 
establish, located one mile south of the family farm through the eighth 
grade. Joe always told his children and grandchildren that getting to 
and from school was a one mile walk or run for him and his siblings. 
When Joe was in the eighth grade, his school was invited to Hill City to
 participate in a county track meet. He won a second-place ribbon in the
 100-yard dash. This inspired him to go out  for track at the Hill City 
Memorial High School where he held the high school track record in the 
mile for several years after he started teaching. During his time as a 
high school student, he participated in FFA, football, basketball, and 
track. He graduated in 1954.

Joe’s love for the farm 
and his admiration for his Vo-Ag teacher inspired him to become a Vo-Ag 
teacher himself. He started his college education at Fort Hays State 
College and then transferred to Kansas State College of Agriculture and 
Applied Science, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education 
in 1958. Joe also obtained his master’s degree from Kansas State 
University in 1973.

Joe married Ellen Engel in Ellis, 
Kansas, in 1959. Their family was completed with the arrival of their 
three children: MaDonna, Chris and Brian. Along with his work, he found 
time to educate his children on many of life’s enjoyments such as 
attending church and sporting events, going to the farm, boating, taking
 vacations and spending time with extended family.

Joe worked 
very hard as an educator for forty years. He lived and loved his work. 
Blending traditional concepts and new ideas into a firm philosophy 
provided the best education possible for his students. He received 
recognition from national, state, and local organizations too numerous 
to mention. His contribution to education is expanded through the lives 
of many students creating a legend in our community. After retiring from
 teaching in 2008, Joe helped his brother Robert with the farming 
operation. Ten years later they both went into full retirement enjoying 
sibling trips, family vacations, K-State sporting events, and golfing. 
Joe spent his life serving the Catholic Church. He was a 4th degree 
member of the Knights of Columbus.  During his retirement years, he sat 
on the Dawson Place and the Graham County Historical Society boards. 
Serving his church and community provided him much pleasure and 
satisfaction. Joe loved being a grandpa and great grandpa to his 15 
grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

 in death were his parents; brother John Farrell; sister Annie Riemann; 
grandson Grant Farrell; brothers-in law: Maurice Riemann, Ed Steichen,
 Eugene (Melba) Engel and Dwight Lowman; sisters-in-law, Betty (Bud) 
Weigel and Shirley Engel; and two special great aunts, Katherine Farrell
 and Mary Hinkhouse.

Joe is survived by his wife 
Ellen Farrell, Hill City; his children: MaDonna (Craig) Reiter, Beloit, 
Chris Farrell, Highlands Ranch, Colorado and Brian (Dena) Farrell, 
McPherson; Also surviving are MaDonna’s family: step grandchildren 
Loren and Bonnie Reiter and their children Triston and Hudson; Nick and 
Laura Reiter and daughter Rosemary; Adele and Josh Reiter-Nordin and 
children Penny and Silas; grandson Dustin Reiter and Aimee Wentworth and
 great granddaughter Ivy; Chris’s family: granddaughter Larissa and 
Ryan Prather and great grandson Jax; grandchildren: Josey Farrell, 
Olivia Farrell and Tommy Farrell; Brian’s family: granddaughter Kelsee 
and Donny Hildebrand and great granddaughters Emmalynn and Quinnlynn; 
step grandson Brandon and Karley Gaede and children Axel, Otto and 
expected granddaughter; step grandson Steven and Hannah Gaede; step 
grandson Lane Lippelmann; granddaughter Caitlin Farrell; and step 
granddaughter LaKynn Lippelmann, and deceased grandson Grant Farrell.

Joe
 is also survived by his siblings:  Robert (Donna) Farrell, Hill City; 
Agnes Steichen, Waunakee, Wisconsin; Sister Rosemary Farrell, Silver 
City, New Mexico; Marlene (Ron) Dockins, Casper, Wyoming; Larry (Anita) 
Farrell, Olpe, Joan (Mike) Dolan, Topeka; sisters-in-law:  Laureen 
Farrell and Edna Lowman; brothers-in-law LeRoy Engel and Joe (Sherri) 
Engel; and all his very special nieces and nephews.

children Penny and Silas; grandson Dustin Reiter and Aimee Wentworth and
 great granddaughter Ivy; Chris’s family: granddaughter Larissa and 
Ryan Prather and great grandson Jax; grandchildren: Josey Farrell, 
Olivia Farrell and Tommy Farrell; Brian’s family: granddaughter Kelsee 
and Donny Hildebrand and great granddaughters Emmalynn and Quinnlynn;

Maurice 'Joe' Farrell

Eugene “Gene” J. Urban, 92, passed away February 5, 2023, at 
Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born September 23, 1930, in Loretta, 
Kan., to Leo and Veronica (Stremel) Urban. In 1950, Gene’s parents moved
 the family to Norton. Gene enlisted in the United States Army, where he
 served as a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in 
Seoul and Germany, and received two Battle Stars.

After Gene got out of the service, he married Alice Tuzicka February 
16, 1954, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Loretta. Then in 1966, Gene 
and Alice moved to Albert, where Gene worked for Home Appliance, and 
later owned Gene’s Repair. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, 
American Legion, and the NRA. He was a Model A enthusiast, enjoyed 
hunting, and was an avid gun and clock collector. &nbsp;

Survivors include, his wife, Alice Urban of the home; a daughter, 
Kathy J. Jordan and husband Michael of Hutchinson; a son, Douglas L. 
Urban and wife Charlene of Stilwell; a brother, Larry Urban of Norton; a
 sister, Eileen Jaeger of Tyndall, SD; and several nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernon Urban 
(Gerry) and Marvin Urban (Mary); two sisters, Clarice Engle (Clem) and 
Marlene Urban; and a brother in law, George Jaeger.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Memorial 
service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding, with 
Gentiva Hospice veteran honors. Inurnment will be at St. Ann Cemetery in
 Olmitz, with Military Rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Eugene 'Gene' J. Urban

Alan V. Ochs, 68, passed away February 9, 2023, at Hodgeman County 
Health Center, Jetmore, after a long, courageous battle with metastatic 
prostate cancer.

He was born October 18, 1954, in Dodge City, the son of Vernon and 
Nola (Hill) Ochs.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, he was a diligent, 
hard-working farmer, raising wheat, milo, corn and soybeans.

He was a charter member of Grace Community Church, a past COOP Board 
Member and was a past elder board member at the First Baptist Church, 
all of Dodge City. He graduated from DCCC with an associate’s degree in 
1975 and later attended Fort Hays State University, studying diesel 
mechanics. He was a Hodgeman County Commissioner, where he served one 
term and had just been re-elected to a 2nd term. He was a 
member of AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). Alan earned his
 private pilot’s license in 2001 and his instrument rating followed.&nbsp; He
 also took pride in restoring his 1969 Chevelle and loved spending time 
with his children and teaching his grandchildren things about the farm.

On October 30, 1976, Alan married his high school sweetheart, Julie A. (Crabill) in Jetmore.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include: his three children, Alexandra (Bobby) 
Rainbolt and their children, Hope, Bridger and Brooks, Fort Collins, CO,
 Colby Ochs, Dallas, TX, and Jessilyn (Spensor) Askren and baby girl 
coming in March, Laramie, WY; brother, Loren (Kay) Ochs, Jetmore; 
sisters-in-law, Karen Ochs, Wichita, and Joyce Ochs, Jetmore, and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Marion Ochs.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 
Grace Community Church, 500 Ross Blvd, Dodge City, KS 67801 with Rev. 
Kirk Larson presiding. Family suggests casual dress.&nbsp; Visitation will be

Frederick Paul Cure

Linda Lee Lakes, 79, of Salina, Kan., passed away Sunday, December 
18, 2022. She was born on March 24, 1943, in Pontiac, Mich., to Rufus 
and Nadean (Underwood) Jamison, and raised on the family farm near 
Quinter, Kan.

Linda had a long career in education, beginning as an English teacher
 in Atwood, before transitioning to special education in the Colby and 
Salina school districts. She retired as Director of the Salina Special 
Education Cooperative. Linda loved family gatherings, entertaining, and 
traveling. She, and husband, Glen, were fortunate to establish very dear
 and close friendships while in Salina.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Glen Lakes, of the home; children,
 Lee Eisenbise (Charolette), El Dorado, Kan., Melissa Norton (Brian), 
Woodland, Calif., and Rick Lakes, Brainerd, Minn.; grandchildren, 
Brandon Norton, Woodland, Calif., Allison Norton, Spokane, Wash., and 
Ryan Jones (Kelsey), Douglas, Kan.; and great-grandchildren, Collin and 
Landon Jones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and stepfather, John Warren Jacks.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 
2023, at 10:30 a.m., at Unitarian Universalist Church, 901 Beatrice St, 
Salina, KS 67401.

Linda Lee Lakes

Shirley Bodmer was born Shirley Ann Sarver in Salina, Kansas, on May 1, 1930, and passed away peacefully surrounded by
 her three sons and their wives on February 7, 2023 in Boise, Idaho. 
 Upon graduating high school in her hometown of Natoma, Kansas, in 1948,
 Shirley attended Kansas State College and graduated in 1952.&nbsp;During 
college she belonged to the Delta Delta Delta sorority where she served 
as president. She was also a member of Mortar Board, a senior women's 
honorary society. She married Bernard A Bodmer on June 8, 1952, and
 moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where Bernard was attending Kansas 
University Medical School. While Bernard was finishing his medical 
degree, their first son, Craig, was born. When Bernard graduated medical
 school in 1955 the small family moved to Sacramento, California, for 
Bernard's medical internship. Son Ken was born during that year. Upon 
completion of his internship Bernard served in the United States Air 
Force in Sherman, Texas, where son Scott was born in 1958.&nbsp;

Following
 his service, Bernard bought a medical practice in Gooding, Idaho. 
During the next nine years, Shirley created a home for the family, 
raised her three boys, and built friendships in Gooding that lasted the 
rest of her life. Bernard brought the family to Denver, Colorado, 
in 1967 to pursue a residency in radiology, and upon completion in three
 years, the family moved to Boise, Idaho. Shirley's life in Boise 
was filled with family, friends, and service to the community. She 
served as President of the Ada County Medical Auxiliary and served on 
the Idaho Medical Auxiliary Board. She was active in the Cathedral of 
the Rockies serving as president of the United Methodist Women, and on 
the board of trustees for two terms. She also served as president of her
 PEO Chapters along the way. She was a member of PEO for 60 years until 
the end of her life. Bernard and Shirley moved to Twin Falls, 
Idaho, and spent seven years as Bernard finished his career. Shirley 
again formed many friendships and continued her community service on the
 boards of the Library Foundation and the Arts Council. Upon 
retirement the couple moved to Palm Desert, California, and spent their 
first 10 years of retirement building and enjoying many friendships, 
returning to Boise in 2005. Shirley's life in Boise was filled with 
bridge, reading, gardening and entertaining friends. Shirley is 
survived by her sister Mary Brown of Hays, Kansas, her three sons, Craig
 (Kari), Ken (Shellee), Scott and Scott's two sons, Mitch (Hattie) and 
Luke. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, 
February 13, in the Cana Chapel at the Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise

Shirley Bodmer 

Russell Allen Bell passed unexpectedly of sudden cardiac arrest on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022, at his home in Durham, N.C. Russell was born Nov. 29, 1938, in Penrose to George Howard and Pearl (Hollister) Bell. He graduated from high school in Eads before attending Lamar Community College. After
 several years ranching, rodeoing, and playing semi-professional 
baseball, he went on to receive a BS in Agriculture Education at the 
University of Missouri in 1970. While there he met the love of his life, Sharon Shasserre. They married five months later at Sharon's family home in Cuba, Mo. Russell
 then began a 20 year career teaching Vocational Agriculture and 
advising FFA students, first for two years in Anton, then for 18 years 
in Goodland, Kan. During this time, he also received a MS in Agriculture Education from Kansas State University. Two years after moving to Goodland their daughter, Loretta, was born. Later
 Russell worked at Boogaarts Super Market and as a Correctional Officer 
at the Sherman County Sheriff's office before he and Sharon relocated to
 Manhattan, Kan., where Russell enjoyed retired life. After his only 
grandson was born, he and Sharon relocated once more to Durham, N.C. 
where he was a kind, generous, engaged grandfather whose final eight 
years of life was filled with playing baseball, soccer, basketball, 
sharing his love and knowledge of woodworking, and passing wisdom to his
 grandson. Russell was an all-around craftsman but particularly loved woodworking and welding. He had a lifelong love of learning and was an avid reader and Civil War history enthusiast. He continued his involvement in horsemanship and love of baseball until the end of life. Other hobbies included gardening, and membership in Kansas Masonic bodies. Russell
 is survived by his wife Sharon Bell of the home; daughter Loretta 
(Kirk) Pappan of Rougemont, N.C.; grandson Brook Pappan of Rougemont, 
N.C. He is also survived by sister Ida (Donna) Houston (Bill) of 
Columbia, Mo., sisters-in-law Michelle (Matt) Hughes of St. Clair, Mo. 
and Marsha Shasserre of Chamois, Mo., brother-in-law Paul (Debbie) 
Shasserre of Cuba, Mo. and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He 
is preceded in death by infant son Paul from his first marriage, parents
 George Howard and Pearl Bell, parents-in-law Frank and Georgetta 
(Kamler) Shasserre and brother-in-law Thomas Shasserre.

 Russell worked at Boogaarts Super Market and as a Correctional Officer 
at the Sherman County Sheriff's office before he and Sharon relocated to
 Manhattan, Kan., where Russell enjoyed retired life. After his only 
grandson was born, he and Sharon relocated once more to Durham, N.C. 
where he was a kind, generous, engaged grandfather whose final eight 
years of life was filled with playing baseball, soccer, basketball, 
sharing his love and knowledge of woodworking, and passing wisdom to his
 grandson. Russell was an all-around craftsman but particularly loved woodworking and welding. He had a lifelong love of learning and was an avid reader and Civil War history enthusiast. He continued his involvement in horsemanship and love of baseball until the end of life. Other hobbies included gardening, and membership in Kansas Masonic bodies. Russell
 is survived by his wife Sharon Bell of the home; daughter Loretta 
(Kirk) Pappan of Rougemont, N.C.; grandson Brook Pappan of Rougemont, 
N.C. He is also survived by sister Ida (Donna) Houston (Bill) of 
Columbia, Mo., sisters-in-law Michelle (Matt) Hughes of St. Clair, Mo. 
and Marsha Shasserre of Chamois, Mo., brother-in-law Paul (Debbie) 
Shasserre of Cuba, Mo. and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He 
is preceded in death by infant son Paul from his first marriage, parents
 George Howard and Pearl Bell, parents-in-law Frank and Georgetta 
(Kamler) Shasserre and brother-in-law Thomas Shasserre.

Russell Allen Bell

Bonnie (Gosser) Wyatt, of Plainville, KS, passed away at the Rooks 
County Health Center on February 7, 2023. She was 91 years old. She was 
born on Memorial Day, May 30, 1931, in Hays, Kansas, to Theodore and 
Foila (Joy) Gosser.

Bonnie graduated from Hays High 
School in 1949.  She joined the Women’s Army Corps in May 1951. Basic 
training was in Fork Lee, VA.  After basic, she was stationed at West 
Point Military Academy, New York. In 1952, she was transferred to the 
97th General Hospital, Frankfort, Germany. While there she had the 
opportunity to travel to France and Italy; and on the way home in 1954, 
visited Casablanca, North America. She was a charter member of the 
Women’s Army Corps Memorial in Arlington Cemetery Washington, D.C.

Bonnie
 was discharged in 1954, returned to Hays and opened the Bonnie B. Café 
on the northeast corner of Highway 183 and 27th Street. Due to a severe 
ice storm in 1957, she lost the café.  She went to Great Lakes, IL to 
visit a friend, Clyde “Bud” Wyatt and they were married on September 3, 
1958, in Waukegan, IL. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in 
Natoma and enjoyed being a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League 
and held several offices in that organization.

Bonnie was preceded
 in death by her parents; two brothers, Harvey and Arnold; sister, Velma
 Baker; brother-in-law, Don and two nieces Cheryl and Sara.

She
 is survived by two children, Darci Wyatt, Plainville and Dylan (Tricia 
Hemphill), Codell; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, 
Allen (Donna) Gosser, Codell; sister, Alice (James) Stramel, Hays; 
sister-in-law, Eileen Gosser, Wakeeney; and many nieces, nephews and 
cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, 
February 13, 2023, at 10:30 AM at the Peace Lutheran Church, Natoma. 
Interment will follow at the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be on 
Sunday 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 1:00
 PM – 3:00 PM at the funeral home in Plainville, and 9:30 AM until 
service time on Monday at the church.

Bonnie Belle Wyatt

Betty Jean Ziegler, age 76, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Long Term Care, in WaKeeney, KS. Betty was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, KS, on September 20, 1946, to Ignatz and Mary (Weber) Beer. She was the oldest of four daughters. She attended school in WaKeeney, KS, graduating from Trego Community High School in 1964. Upon graduating, she worked keeping books at the local telephone company in WaKeeney. Betty married Lawrence “Max” Ziegler on August 6, 1966, at Christ The King Church in WaKeeney, KS. To this union, they were blessed with three children. Betty and “Max” made their home on the Ziegler family farm. Betty was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm; she was a devoted wife and mother. She loved to cook, and we enjoyed many delicious meals especially during the holidays, no one left hungry. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with the Collyer group, and she was also involved in the St Michael's Catholic Church Altar Society. Betty liked to garden; she was not much into flowers, but enjoyed watching the vegetables grow. There was a lot of salsa made and oh my, the pumpkins. Betty enjoyed playing cards with her family as there were several evenings spent playing Dingbat, Pinochle, or Poker. She also enjoyed her trips gambling with her sisters and brother-in-laws, and she bowled for many years on a league with her family and friends. They went to national tournaments, always having a good time, and had stories to tell about their trips. Fulfilling his term, Betty also served on the school board after her husband, Max passed in 1990. Betty enjoyed being outside and spent many hours mowing with the riding mower while on the farm. Her favorite Holiday was Christmas. Everyone enjoyed all of the outside and inside decorations that were put up. Folks would drive by the farm to see them. Betty also grew up in a family that loved music. She learned to play the piano growing up and sang in choir. Betty taught piano lessons, and for many years, she was the song leader at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She passed her love of music onto her children and grandchildren as all of her children and grandchildren can sing and/or play an instrument.

Betty was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2004. She moved into Long Term Care in July of 2016 as the disease had progressed. Betty put up a good fight, but the last year had taken its toll, and she has now been called to her eternal home. 

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, “Max” Ziegler, and her parents. 

Betty is survived by her children, Charlene (David) Anderson, WaKeeney; Amy (Pete) Befort, Hays; Lance (Libby) Ziegler WaKeeney. Seven grandchildren, Max and Marissa Befort; Emma (Aaron) Satran, and Benjamin Anderson; Avery, Bailey, and Cenley Ziegler; Betty’s sisters, Carol (Vernon) Kinderknecht, Donna (Larry) Keyser, and Sharon (the late Virgil) Uhrich. Betty also has many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 10, 2023, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, Kansas. Theo Arlene Moberly sadly passed away on February 7, 2023, at the age 
of 96, only two days before her 97th birthday.&nbsp; She was loved and will 
be missed by her family.

Our dear mother and grandmother, Myra L. 
Strickert, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023, at age 100 at 
Tallgrass Creek Senior Living Community in Overland Park, KS.&nbsp; She was 
born December 21, 1922, in Gove, KS as the oldest daughter of William F.
 and Iva Mae Litton Roemer, both deceased. &nbsp;

On August 1, 1941, she married the love of her life, Philip E. 
Strickert in Ulysses, KS. They started their married life of 64 years in
 Friend, KS and moved to Garden City, KS in 1959.&nbsp; She obtained her 
cosmetology license and owned her own beauty shop for many years before 
retiring. &nbsp;

She and Phil were both very active members of The Eagles Lodge where 
they spent Saturday nights dancing and enjoying time with their many 
friends.&nbsp; After her husband passed in 2006, she moved to Tallgrass Creek
 where she enjoyed quilting, working in the library, and spending time 
with friends and family.&nbsp; Myra will be remembered for her love and 
devotion to family, her apple pies, and her independent spirit. &nbsp;

Other survivors include:&nbsp; 2 sons - Delbert Strickert of Eufaula, OK 
and William Strickert of Yuma, CO, 3 daughters – Phyllis Sage of 
Kennewick, WA, Linda Orrick of Reeds Spring, MO and Annette Armstrong of
 Centennial, CO, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 
great-great granddaughter. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by 1 granddaughter, Dana Marie Orrick, 2 brothers and 5 sisters. &nbsp;

Private graveside services will be held later this spring at the 
Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas with Steve Payne presiding.

Barbara Ann Phillips, Hutchinson, passed from this world on January 
28, 2023. Barbara was 74 years old. Barbara was born on February 23, 
1948, at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays. She lived her childhood and early
 teens on a farm north of Gorham. Her parents, Wendelin “Nick” and Helen
 Brungardt welcomed Barbara as their fifth and youngest child.&nbsp;

Barbara
 graduated from Gorham High School and Fort Hays State University, where
 she earned her undergraduate degree and multiple post graduate degrees.
 Barbara loved learning and would have loved to have been a full-time 
student the entirety of her adult life. Barbara was a talented artist, 
decorator, and savvy shopper. Although burdened by debilitating pain the
 last two years of her life, she maintained a positive attitude. Barbara
 had a tremendous faith which sustained her through many difficult times
 in her life.&nbsp;

Barbara chose the field of education, where she was
 a teacher and counselor. Before retiring in 2017, Barbara served the 
role as elementary school counselor, a job where she believed she made 
the biggest impact in the lives of students. Barbara advocated for all 
students, especially those students who were the most difficult to 
reach. Somehow, she was able to gain their trust and move them in a 
positive direction. Seldom could she go anywhere in Hutchinson without a
 former student, parent, or colleague recognizing her.&nbsp;

Barbara 
was proceeded in death by her son: Travis; four siblings, Joyce, Donald,
 Gary, and Carolyn; and two nephews, Bryan and Bradley.&nbsp;

She is survived by several nephews and nieces. Barbara also had many friends who loved her too.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.

Barbara Ann Phillips

Leo Harold Baum, 98, passed away July 25, 2022, at Country Place 
Senior Living Memory Care, Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born August 28, 1923, at 
Susank, Kan., to Andrew and Katherine (Schmidt) Baum.&nbsp; Leo married 
Loretta Jean Cronn Dec. 12, 1949, in Russell, Kan.&nbsp; They celebrated 72 
years of marriage last December.

Leo, a resident of Hoisington since 1970 coming from Paradise, Kan., 
was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. 
Philadelphia.&nbsp; Following his honorable discharge on March 29, 1947, he 
worked in the oilfield, the Helium Plant in Otis and later as a tool 
pusher for Mohawk Drilling.&nbsp; In his later years he was employed at Great
 Bend feeding as a night watchman.&nbsp; Leo enjoyed fishing, music, playing 
his guitar and spending time with family.&nbsp; He was a Life member of the 
V.F.W., Russell, and was a devoted member of the Christian faith, 
accepting Christ at the age of 18.&nbsp; Leo shaped his life around his faith
 in Jesus Christ as his Savior, and made it his life's work to embrace 
and spread the Word.

Survivors include his wife Loretta of the home; two sons, Leo Baum, 
Jr. (Vicky) of Rusk, Texas, and Gordon Baum (Karen) of Buchannon, W.V.; 
two daughters, Ginger Cotten (Joe) of Hoisington, and Brenda Roat (Damon
 Phelps) of Hoisington; son-in-law Terry Hekele of Great Bend; 
grandchildren, Leo C. Baum, Bri Foresman, Kim Gould, Angela Gould, Tina 
Harman, Cassie Andrews, Kristin Wilt, Terri Umphres, Tiffany Hekele, 
Tyann Miller, Micah Cotten, Sarah Simic, Rebekah Ohlde, Joey Cotten, 
Kristin Roat, DJ Miller and Trenton Roat; 22 great grandchildren; 5 
great great grandchildren; two brothers, George Baum of Great Bend and 
Jake Baum (Mary) of Kansas City, Kan.; and two sisters, Hilda Jacobs of 
Gorham and Lydia Kaufman (Gary) of Great Bend.&nbsp; He was preceded in 
passing by daughter, Leota Hekele; and siblings, Helen Wolford, Mary 
Mermis, Edward Baum, Josephine Shreve, Rosie Thompson, Margaret Bissett,
 Viola Brown, Kenny Baum and Emil Baum.

oretta Jean Baum, 92, passed away February 8, 2023, at Credo Senior 
Living in Hoisington. She was born February 7, 1931, at Russell, to 
George and Opal (Whitman) Cronn. She married Leo Harold Baum on December
 12, 1949, at Russell.&nbsp; He died July 25, 2022.

Loretta, a Hoisington resident since 1970 coming from Paradise, Kan.,
 worked for Clara Barton Hospital in the dietary speciality and 
housekeeping departments, also working for Fuller Brush Co. for many 
years.&nbsp; She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, cooking, and was known for 
her gift of hospitality, cherishing time spent with family and friends.&nbsp;
 Above all, Loretta was a devoted member of the Christian faith, shaping

Senior Living Memory Care, Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born August 28, 1923, at 
Susank, Kan., to Andrew and Katherine (Schmidt) Baum.&nbsp; Leo married 
Loretta Jean Cronn Dec. 12, 1949, in Russell, Kan.&nbsp; They celebrated 72 
years of marriage last December.Leo, a resident of Hoisington since 1970 coming from Paradise, Kan., 
was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. 
Philadelphia.&nbsp; Following his honorable discharge on March 29, 1947, he 
worked in the oilfield, the Helium Plant in Otis and later as a tool 
pusher for Mohawk Drilling.&nbsp; In his later years he was employed at Great
 Bend feeding as a night watchman.&nbsp; Leo enjoyed fishing, music, playing 
his guitar and spending time with family.&nbsp; He was a Life member of the 
V.F.W., Russell, and was a devoted member of the Christian faith, 
accepting Christ at the age of 18.&nbsp; Leo shaped his life around his faith
 in Jesus Christ as his Savior, and made it his life's work to embrace 
and spread the Word.Survivors include his wife Loretta of the home; two sons, Leo Baum,

Betty Wayman, age 88, of Ellis, Kansas 
passed away Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital 
in WaKeeney, Kansas. She was born on a farm south of Ellis on February 
11, 1934, to Fredrick William &amp; Florence Elma (Carter) Mickelson. She
 married Melvin Grosz May 1951 &amp; later divorced. She moved to 
Wyoming in 1964 where she met her husband, Chuck Wayman. He preceded her
 in death on January 22, 2008.

Betty worked for many years at the City
 Café in Ellis. Betty was a member of the Methodist Church, U.M.W. and 
Noah Circle, Ellis Country Club, Lifetime member of Ellis VFW Auxiliary 
and a Hospice Volunteer. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, and working 
puzzles.

Betty is survived by daughters, Patty 
(Steve) Bone, Gloria (Scott) Callaway, Tonya Appel; sons, Gordon Grosz, 
Charles Jr (Gloria) Wayman, Jeff Wayman, and Ed (Rayetta) Crist; 
sister-in-law, Donna Dreiling; many grandchildren, great grandchildren,

Betty Wayman

Leland Roush was born to Raymond R Roush and Stella Olliff Roush on 
September 12, 1931. He began his new life in Glory on February 7, 2023.

Leland
 was a sickly child at first but through the power of prayer and eating 
lots of dirt, he got much better. His much-loved cousins Wayne and Arden
 had a pony while they were growing up and Leland had a bicycle.  Leland
 always insisted on riding their pony when visiting them and they 
insisted on riding his bike when they visited him.

Sunday mornings
 would always find him in church, having been drugged there by his 
mother. He continued that tradition with his own family. Leland gave his
 life to Christ at an early age and never quit attending church or 
helping in any way possible at church until he couldn’t do it anymore.  
Even away from his church, one of his first questions when visiting him 
in Sun Porch was, “How was the church doing?”

Leland attended the 
country school south of the farm through 8th grade, He attended high 
school in Lebanon where he graduated with the class of 1949. In 1952, he
 was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War.  He was trained 
as a medic. He didn’t say much about his time over there except during a
 ceasefire order, the North Koreans and Chinese were determined to send 
back every captured artillery round through the air plus he lost a very 
good friend who was a fellow medic and Christian brother from Ohio. He 
volunteered to be a medic on the boat rides to and from Korea which 
entitled him to keep his hand in the Dramamine jar a lot.

Leland 
was dismissed from the Army in 1954 and married the love of his life, 
Imogene Grace Diechen on August 22, 1954.  They settled on the family 
farm southeast of Lebanon where Leland farmed all his life. They had 4 
kids, Cindy, Kirk, Kelly, and Connie. Leland had several “hired hands” 
over the years until his own kids became old enough to be proteges 
(slaves). The grandchildren continued in those roles. Grandpa was 
molding character and imparting wisdom but it probably didn’t seem like 
it at the time. Those hired hands (Larry Jennings, Charles Luke, Roger 
Fricker) were like family also.

While his kids were in school, 
Leland and Imogene traveled many miles to high school sporting events.  
Later, they attended many events for their grandkids.  In later years, 
Leland spent many Saturday afternoons watching K-state football and 
basketball.  Sunday afternoon was reserved for the pro football 
predominately the Chiefs.  His one regret was never attending a Kansas 
City Royals game.

He thoroughly enjoyed organizing and hosting 2 
“Roush” cousin reunions of his fellow 1st cousins from the Roush family.
 On the rare times Leland and Imogene left home, the trip always 
included visiting relatives in various places no matter how far away 
they were or how distantly they were related. They also stayed with them
 while on the road and the relatives were always welcome to do the same 
at their house.

Leland was preceded in death by his wife Imogene, 
his parents, his sister Marjean. 

Those left to mourn his passing are his
 daughter Cindy (Arlyn) Steinert of Hoisington, son Kirk of Carrollton, 
Texas, son Kelly (Sue) of Lebanon, Kansas and daughter Connie (Mike) 
Tholstrup of Concordia, Kansas: 10 grandchildren: Jason of Hoisington, 
Phuong (Chris) Euless, Texas, Emily of Houston, Texas, Thomas, Austin, 
Texas, Scott (Brandi) of Centennial, Colorado, Ashley (Keith) of Kansas 
City Kansas, Jesse (Shelby) of Bolckow, Missouri, Kaden (Emily) Lebanon,
 Kansas, Jordan (Teica) McPherson, Kansas, Blaine (Katie) of Concordia, 
Kansas. 13 great grandchildren, Brock, Lilliah, Liam, Isabelle, Oliver, 
Violet, Paxton, Finley, Otto, Cooper, Quincy, Corwin, Everett and 2 more

Leland J. Roush

Marvel June Mitchell Castor, 87, of Russell, Kansas, passed away 
peacefully Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Russell Regional Hospital with
 her children by her side.

Marvel was born March 28, 1935, on the family homestead near Covert, 
Kansas, the only daughter of Albert Lyle and Helen Lorene (Orr) 
Mitchell. She lived her early years on the family farm with her parents 
and older brother, Doyle and younger brother, Gerald. Marvel enjoyed her
 life on the farm. She loved to ride horses and was known for doing 
trick riding on her pony. Marvel also helped with her father’s cattle 
herd and continued this passion later in her life.

Marvel attended Covert schools, Osborne Junior High and graduated in 
1953 from Osborne High School. In high school, Marvel was a dedicated 
student and participated in many clubs and activities. Marvel treasured 
her friendships from her early school years throughout her lifetime. 
After high school, Marvel attended Fort Hays State College and she was a
 member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. In January 1957, she earned her Bachelor 
of Science in Biology and a minor in Psychology. In August of 1962, 
Marvel earned her Master of Science in Counseling. As a continuous 
learner, Marvel earned advanced graduate credit in psychology, 
educational curriculum and building/district administration 
certification. She held teaching certifications in Zoology, Psychology, 
Botany, Biology, and English.

While growing up in Osborne, Marvel met her life partner, Derril Lee 
Castor, when she was in junior high school. Their friendship continued 
throughout high school and college. Marvel and Derril were married on 
November 21, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Osborne, Kansas. This
 union was blessed with two children; L’Mitchell (Mitch) and Lezlee. 
They have made Russell their home since 1963.

Marvel’s 43 year teaching and counseling career began in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas from 1957-1960. She worked at Green Valley High 
School and Osborne High School. In 1963, Marvel started working at 
Russell High School as the guidance counselor until her retirement in 
1999. From 1979-1999, Marvel served as the coordinator for Barton County
 Community College Outreach classes in the Russell area. During her 
years in education, Marvel served as a teacher, mentor, motivator, 
trusted listener, and pep talk giver. She could provide a shoulder to 
lean on or the voice saying, “keep your chin up and get going”. For 
Marvel, the relationships she cultivated throughout her career served as
 her true measures of success and the unique achievements of the lives 
she encouraged.

During retirement, Marvel and Derril didn’t slow down. They arguably 
worked harder and were busier than most of their employed friends and 
family. They traveled abroad several times, made hundreds of trips of 
Kansas City, and devoted thousands of hours refurbishing Marvel’s family
 farmhouse and property. Going to the farm was a daily occurrence for 
many years for Marvel and Derril and one that brought them both so much 
happiness.

Marvel also loved going to auctions, refinishing furniture, planting 
flowers-especially irises and peonies, working and checking cattle, 
reading, and volunteering. She was a member of DKG International Society
 of Women Educators, Chapter HD P.E.O., Russell’s Original Art Review 
(ROAR) Committee, Russell County Area Community Foundation, and Friends 
of Deines Board President for the Deines Cultural Center. Marvel was an 
active member of the Fort Hays State Alumni Association. She was a 
member of the St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church of Russell and later 
attended the St. John Lutheran Church.

Marvel’s love for her family was unmatched. She was a devoted 
daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother. She offered sound
 advice and wanted only the best for those willing to work for it. 
Marvel loved attending the events of her children and grandchildren, as 
she was always their most passionate and dedicated supporter.

Marvel’s surviving family includes her son, Mitch Castor of Prairie 
Village, Kansas; daughter, Lezlee Ivy (Eric) of Parkville, Missouri; and
 four grandsons, Connor Castor, Nick Castor, Brock Ivy and Tate Ivy; 
sister-in-law, Kathy Mitchell (Gary Chubb) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and
 her sons, David (Shabnam) Mitchell and Phil (Lauren) Mitchell; nieces 
Jolene (Rex) Kats, Joyce (Joe) Matal, and Dodie Mitchell. She also 
leaves behind a host of loving and dear friends.

Marvel was preceded in death by her husband Derril, her parents and brothers, Doyle Mitchell and Gerald Mitchell.

A celebration of Marvel’s life will be held at St. John Lutheran 
Church on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 11:00 A.M.&nbsp; Private burial of 
ashes will take place at a later time. 

Memorials may be given to the 
Marvel and Derril Castor Fund at the Russell County Area Community 
Foundation and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler 
Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service.

Botany, Biology, and English.While growing up in Osborne, Marvel met her life partner, Derril Lee 
Castor, when she was in junior high school. Their friendship continued 
throughout high school and college. Marvel and Derril were married on 
November 21, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Osborne, Kansas. This
 union was blessed with two children; L’Mitchell (Mitch) and Lezlee. 
They have made Russell their home since 1963.Marvel’s 43 year teaching and counseling career began in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas from 1957-1960. She worked at Green Valley High 
School and Osborne High School. In 1963, Marvel started working at 
Russell High School as the guidance counselor until her retirement in 
1999. From 1979-1999, Marvel served as the coordinator for Barton County
 Community College Outreach classes in the Russell area. During her 
years in education, Marvel served as a teacher, mentor, motivator, 
trusted listener, and pep talk giver. She could provide a shoulder to 
lean on or the voice saying, “keep your chin up and get going”. For 
Marvel, the relationships she cultivated throughout her career served as
 her true measures of success and the unique achievements of the lives 
she encouraged.During retirement, Marvel and Derril didn’t slow down. They arguably 
worked harder and were busier than most of their employed friends and 
family. They traveled abroad several times, made hundreds of trips of 
Kansas City, and devoted thousands of hours refurbishing Marvel’s family
 farmhouse and property. Going to the farm was a daily occurrence for 
many years for Marvel and Derril and one that brought them both so much 
happiness.Marvel also loved going to auctions, refinishing furniture, planting 
flowers-especially irises and peonies, working and checking cattle, 
reading, and volunteering. She was a member of DKG International Society
 of Women Educators, Chapter HD P.E.O., Russell’s Original Art Review 
(ROAR) Committee, Russell County Area Community Foundation, and Friends 
of Deines Board President for the Deines Cultural Center. Marvel was an 
active member of the Fort Hays State Alumni Association. She was a 
member of the St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church of Russell and later 
attended the St. John Lutheran Church.Marvel’s love for her family was unmatched. She was a devoted 
daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother. She offered sound
 advice and wanted only the best for those willing to work for it. 
Marvel loved attending the events of her children and grandchildren, as 
she was always their most passionate and dedicated supporter.Marvel’s surviving family includes her son, Mitch Castor of Prairie 
Village, Kansas; daughter, Lezlee Ivy (Eric) of Parkville, Missouri; and
 four grandsons, Connor Castor, Nick Castor, Brock Ivy and Tate Ivy; 
sister-in-law, Kathy Mitchell (Gary Chubb) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and
 her sons, David (Shabnam) Mitchell and Phil (Lauren) Mitchell; nieces 
Jolene (Rex) Kats, Joyce (Joe) Matal, and Dodie Mitchell. She also 
leaves behind a host of loving and dear friends.Marvel was preceded in death by her husband Derril, her parents and brothers, Doyle Mitchell and Gerald Mitchell.A celebration of Marvel’s life will be held at St. John Lutheran 
Church on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 11:00 A.M.&nbsp; Private burial of 
ashes will take place at a later time. Memorials may be given to the 
Marvel and Derril Castor Fund at the Russell County Area Community 
Foundation and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler

Elma Alberta Ahrens, 94, of Oakley, Kansas passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Logan County Hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Towanda, KS to Albert Frederick Hueftle and B. Magdalene (Ebel) Hueftle. She graduated from Menlo High School in 1946 and from Fort Hays State University in 1950 with a degree in English and a minor in music. On July 23, 1950, she married James (Jim) Dean Ahrens in Hays. She was active in farming with her husband, substitute taught and was an interior decorator. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Oakley City Council, Summer Recreation Commission, Cameo Club, P.E.O, Federated Women’s Club; served on the Farm &amp; Home Administration Committee, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, Fick Museum Board and Oakley Public Library and was a 4-H community Leader and Brownie Leader. She was an avid historical researcher. Survivors include her children, Kerry Cejka, of Dumfries, VA, and Tom Ahrens and wife Rosa of Oakley; and former daughter-in-law Cheryl Ahrens of Oakley; one sister Katherine Wilgers and husband Larry of Winfield, KS, and sister-in-law Pat Hueftle of Menlo, KS; seven grandchildren: Eric Cejka and wife Melanie of Kearney, MO, Jason Ahrens and wife Kelly, of Hopkins, MN, Joshua Ahrens of Oakley, Jeremy Cejka and wife, Anna of Woodbridge, VA, Amanda Ahrens of Salina, KS, Brandon Ahrens of Oakley, and Patrick Ahrens and wife, Libby of Oakley; nine great grandchildren: Nicholas Ahrens, Maximus and Wyatt Ahrens, Elizabeth, Emma, and Carter Cejka, Chase and Autumn Cejka, and Olivia Ahrens; along with numerous other nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Elma Alberta Ahrens

Gary Francis Bergmeier, 85, Manhattan, died on February 3, 2023, 
after a short illness in Stoneybrook Long Term Care Manhattan, Kansas.

He was born April 1, 1937, the son of Frank and Evelyn (Budden) Bergmeier, in rural Wakefield, Kansas.

Gary
 graduated from Wakefield Rural High School with the Class of 1955. He 
graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State 
University in 1959.

He married Dixie Lee Sherbert on June 1, 1958,
 at the home of Bill and Lela Auld in Wakefield. Gary worked for the 
John Deere Company from 1964-71, mostly based in Colby, Kansas, then was
 a co-owner in a farm equipment dealership in Hoxie from 1971-77 and 
owner of a dealership in Phillipsburg from 1977-84. For more than 30 
years he was a Primerica Inc. financial services representative in Fort 
Collins, Colorado, and Abilene and Manhattan, Kansas.

He stayed 
active in local communities in various roles. While in northwest Kansas 
Gary served on chamber of commerce committees, Region I emergency 
medical services board and, along with Dixie, was in the second class of
 emergency medical technicians in Kansas. He and Dixie served as EMTs in
 Hoxie and Phillipsburg. Gary was also a rural fire chief in Hoxie. He 
was active in Missouri Synod Lutheran churches in various roles.

He
 is survived by his wife, Dixie, of the home; his four sons, Mark 
(Michele), of Wamego; Mike (Angie), of Hutchinson; Dave, of Dodge City; 
and Dan (Monica) of Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren Paige (Ryan), Petey 
(Samantha), Preston (Becca), Brock (Sarah), Elissa, Olivia, Frank, J.J.,
 Eli, Andrew, Isabella; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rex Bergmeier.

Gary’s
 wishes were to be cremated. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7
 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 4801 
Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS 66503.&nbsp; A memorial service will be at 10 
a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at the church. After a light family 
luncheon, burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Wakefield.

In
 lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Lutheran Hour
 Ministries, or the donor’s choice. They may be left in care of the 
Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Gary Francis Bergmeier

Rosie Wenzl Klozenbucher, gentle soul, good neighbor, and an 
endlessly patient mother and grandmother from Greenleaf, died Feb. 3 at 
the Linn Community Care Home. She was 88.&nbsp;

She was born Rosemary 
Frances Fiegener, in Clay Center in 1934, to parents scratching out life
 in the Depression.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were getting divorced, and her mother Rose was
 mortally ill but did not know it; Rose died when Rosemary was two.&nbsp;A 
visitor to the house had found Rose unconscious on the floor and 
Rosemary crawling happily around her.

Her father Pete was a poor, 
shy man who lavished love on Rosemary until he got drafted into the U.S.
 Army. He was killed during the 1944 battle for the German city of 
Aachen.

Rosemary, nine years old, refused to believe he was dead; 
this was a fib, she told herself -- told in a family that nurtured 
grievances and fibs. She didn’t cry until three years later when Pete’s 
coffin came home.

After he was drafted,&nbsp;Rosemary would use either a
 stump or a wooden fence rail to climb barefooted and bareback onto 
Tony, a gentle horse kept at the Fiegener family ranch. She was all of 
five or six years old when she first rode Tony. She had two loves, Dad 
and Tony. And on Tony’s back she would trot through the Flint Hills of 
Pottawatomie County, Kansas, with Tony, wildflowers, birdsong and 
pollinating bees as companions. When she fell off, which was frequently,
 Tony would stand still as a gatepost, then find a stump for her climb.

But
 then Pete died, the family lost the ranch, and Rosemary lost Tony. Her 
three never-married aunts took on her care. They’d grown up in a family 
unfamiliar with affection. They didn’t dislike her; they fed, clothed 
and ignored her.&nbsp;“I might as well have been wallpaper,” she told us 
later. “Or a chair.”

When she reached high school age, the aunts 
sent her to Mount St. Scholastica, the Catholic girls boarding school in
 Atchison, where Rosemary knew no one. She studied mostly alone, never 
went out, kept a little unplanted seed of love close to her heart, 
pollinated by hope but not yet planted. And because it was a girls 
school, no boys noticed that shy little Rosemary Fiegener was drop-dead 
gorgeous -- dark hair, thoughtful dark eyes. And that she radiated 
kindness.

Her seed, her plan for sowing love, was simple in 
design, as she told us: “It was that if I was ever lucky enough to find 
love and kids, that they would get all that I never got: Hugs, 
attention, love, attention, toys, attention.”&nbsp; &nbsp;

And by and by, a 
handsome farmer came along, to help his sister move into the dorm on the
 first day of school. He did a double-take in the hall when he saw 
Rosemary. “Oh, WOW,” he said. &nbsp;

“Be nice,” his sister said. “She’s the nicest.”

Gene Wenzl dropped his sister Joan’s bags and patrolled the halls until he found Rosemary.&nbsp;

aunts, and so for the rest of her life she was Rosie to many and 
Rosemary to a few.Rosie told her aunts she would marry Gene. Her 
aunts told her she would do no such thing because they planned to have 
Rosemary keep house for their family, as they had done, loveless and 
childless.And for the first time ever, Rosie declared out loud that she would do as she darn well pleased.They were upset; she was liberated.Gene’s
 parents showered her with love and attention, which startled her at 
first. And soon after she married him in 1954, she and Gene made one 
baby, and then another, and eventually five boys in only nine years.He
 sang while he plowed fields; he played trumpet. She showered her boys 
with attention, not just love but attention in the finest of details.She
 read to her sons every night for many years, no matter how tired, or 
how annoying the little boys. She brought plastic alphabet letters home 
when Roy, the eldest, was six, so he could read by the time he started 
school. Tom set multiple fires; she put them out. She read and read and 
read stories, while Gene told them stories from history. The little boys
 became entranced by books and so went off to make adventures of their 
own. None of them became lawyers or Hollywood celebrities but they all 
became adrenaline junkies – cops, newspaper reporters, paramedics, EMTs,
 foster parents, mountain climbers, foreign exchange student sponsors, 
nurses.Rosie got this started while also doing laundry and 
cooking and gardening and burping babies and helping with homework and 
running them to church, Catechism classes and school, rubbing their 
backs and putting wet washcloths on little faces when they had fevers. 
She hired a babysitter, Pat Lewis, who became a daughter-friend. And 
when girlfriends Sheryl and Sandy and Judy and Carol and Missy showed 
up, they became daughters before they married her sons, and Rosie gave 
them attention and hugs, affection and attention, kindnesses and 
attention.Rosie led the Red Cross recovery program after a 1973 
tornado destroyed much of Greenleaf. She stayed with her church’s Altar 
Society for decades.Gene died early (1981 at age 50), leaving her
 with one son still at home and a farm on the edge of dissolution. She 
kept the farm in the family, and the sons came to keep it going.&nbsp;Rosie
 took EMT training and spent many years crewing ambulances to scenes of 
accidents, injuries and illnesses. And at the end of her aunts’ lives, 
when they got lost in the house of mirrors of dementia, she showered 
them with attention and love and all the things they had not been able 
to give to her long before. But when in their house she found letters 
her father had written home from the war -- letters her aunts had hidden
 from her -- she cried.She married Kimeo farmer Ed Klozenbucher 
in 1986; they spent 27 years together until his death in 2013. Gene had 
loved her dearly but was an edgy and impatient spouse; Ed treated her as
 a princess, as a gift, and she who lacked love early in life now 
cherished that love.Sixteen grandchildren came, and they and 
their spouses showered love and affection and photos and attention on 
her. That little seed of love, nurtured in her early secret solitude, 
had grown her a garden of happiness. The grands gave her 22 
great-grandchildren (so far), and she put photos of the grands and 
great-grands on her walls where she could look at them every hour of the
 day.In the nursing home she was hands-down the staff’s choice as
 the nicest and sweetest resident.&nbsp;Grandson Gene was with her when she 
passed.Her last words were, (to Larry): “I’m so glad you’re here.”She was preceded in death by her son, Gary.She
 leaves her sons, Rich (wife Judy), Almena, Kan.; Tom (Carol), Canon 
City, Colo.; Larry (Sandy) Greenleaf; Roy (Polly), Wichita; and 
daughter-in-laws forever Sheryl Wenzl, Wichita; Missy McLain, Wichita; 
daughter-friend Pat Lewis, Inman, Ks; 16 grandchildren and 22 
great-grandchildren.Plans for a celebration of life and church service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf are pending.
