Marvel June Mitchell Castor, 87, of Russell, Kansas, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Russell Regional Hospital with her children by her side.

Marvel was born March 28, 1935, on the family homestead near Covert, Kansas, the only daughter of Albert Lyle and Helen Lorene (Orr) Mitchell. She lived her early years on the family farm with her parents and older brother, Doyle and younger brother, Gerald. Marvel enjoyed her life on the farm. She loved to ride horses and was known for doing trick riding on her pony. Marvel also helped with her father’s cattle herd and continued this passion later in her life.

Marvel attended Covert schools, Osborne Junior High and graduated in 1953 from Osborne High School. In high school, Marvel was a dedicated student and participated in many clubs and activities. Marvel treasured her friendships from her early school years throughout her lifetime. After high school, Marvel attended Fort Hays State College and she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. In January 1957, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Psychology. In August of 1962, Marvel earned her Master of Science in Counseling. As a continuous learner, Marvel earned advanced graduate credit in psychology, educational curriculum and building/district administration certification. She held teaching certifications in Zoology, Psychology, Botany, Biology, and English.

While growing up in Osborne, Marvel met her life partner, Derril Lee Castor, when she was in junior high school. Their friendship continued throughout high school and college. Marvel and Derril were married on November 21, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Osborne, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children; L’Mitchell (Mitch) and Lezlee. They have made Russell their home since 1963.

Marvel’s 43 year teaching and counseling career began in Phillipsburg, Kansas from 1957-1960. She worked at Green Valley High School and Osborne High School. In 1963, Marvel started working at Russell High School as the guidance counselor until her retirement in 1999. From 1979-1999, Marvel served as the coordinator for Barton County Community College Outreach classes in the Russell area. During her years in education, Marvel served as a teacher, mentor, motivator, trusted listener, and pep talk giver. She could provide a shoulder to lean on or the voice saying, “keep your chin up and get going”. For Marvel, the relationships she cultivated throughout her career served as her true measures of success and the unique achievements of the lives she encouraged.

During retirement, Marvel and Derril didn’t slow down. They arguably worked harder and were busier than most of their employed friends and family. They traveled abroad several times, made hundreds of trips of Kansas City, and devoted thousands of hours refurbishing Marvel’s family farmhouse and property. Going to the farm was a daily occurrence for many years for Marvel and Derril and one that brought them both so much happiness.

Marvel also loved going to auctions, refinishing furniture, planting flowers-especially irises and peonies, working and checking cattle, reading, and volunteering. She was a member of DKG International Society of Women Educators, Chapter HD P.E.O., Russell’s Original Art Review (ROAR) Committee, Russell County Area Community Foundation, and Friends of Deines Board President for the Deines Cultural Center. Marvel was an active member of the Fort Hays State Alumni Association. She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church of Russell and later attended the St. John Lutheran Church.

Marvel’s love for her family was unmatched. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother. She offered sound advice and wanted only the best for those willing to work for it. Marvel loved attending the events of her children and grandchildren, as she was always their most passionate and dedicated supporter.

Marvel’s surviving family includes her son, Mitch Castor of Prairie Village, Kansas; daughter, Lezlee Ivy (Eric) of Parkville, Missouri; and four grandsons, Connor Castor, Nick Castor, Brock Ivy and Tate Ivy; sister-in-law, Kathy Mitchell (Gary Chubb) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and her sons, David (Shabnam) Mitchell and Phil (Lauren) Mitchell; nieces Jolene (Rex) Kats, Joyce (Joe) Matal, and Dodie Mitchell. She also leaves behind a host of loving and dear friends.

Marvel was preceded in death by her husband Derril, her parents and brothers, Doyle Mitchell and Gerald Mitchell.

A celebration of Marvel’s life will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 11:00 A.M.&nbsp; Private burial of ashes will take place at a later time.&nbsp;

Memorials may be given to the Marvel and Derril Castor Fund at the Russell County Area Community Foundation and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service.

Wanda H. Limper, age 72, died Saturday, February 18, 2023, at her home 
in Ulysses. She was born August 9, 1950, in San Diego, California, the 
daughter of John Werner and WaDean (Miller) McClung. 
Wanda grew up in California and graduated from Grantville High School in
 El Cajon. She moved to Ulysses to marry Ronald Limper on October 20, 
1978. Wanda was always busy and worked as a bartender, accountant, real
 estate agent, recorder at the Grant County Court House Register of 
Deeds office, and was a payroll clerk for WT Contractors. She had her 
abstract license and owned and operated Grant County Land and Title 
until she retired. After retirement, she and Ron traveled all over the 
United States for two years seeing the sights and visiting family. 
Wanda also enjoyed vegetable gardening. 
Wanda is survived by Ron, her husband of 44 years; son, Randall Berry of
 Quinter, Kansas; daughter, Mitziauna Newland and husband Isaac of 
Blane, Washington; sisters, Mary Monk of Cottonwood, Alabama, and Pat 
Texler of Fortuna, California; two grandchildren, Giaus and Elliott 
Newland; sister-in-law, Sharon Wickwar of Ulysses; cousin, Lana and 
Terry Anderson of Ulysses; nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and 
great-nephews. 
Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, John and WaDean McClung; and her brother, John in 1973. 
Cremation has taken place and there will be no service at this time.

Johanna Biel, Age 94, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at 
the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on May 6,
 1928, in Marienthal, Kansas, to George &amp; Frances Berning Kessler. 
She dedicated her life to her family, her community, and her Church. She
 was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church in Marienthal, Kansas.

On October 21, 1952, she married Albert Biel Jr. in Marienthal, Kansas. He passed away on February 8, 2020.

Surviving family include her children- Ron &amp; Verla Biel of 
Callaway, Nebraska, Stan &amp; Sherry Biel of Marienthal, Kansas, Bonnie
 &amp; Perry Owens of Minneapolis, Kansas,&nbsp; and Delores Hembree of 
Amarillo, Texas, one brother Hilary &amp; Connie Kessler of Scott City, 
Kansas, one sister Juanita Dinges of Ness City, Kansas, one 
brother-in-law Eugene &amp; Billie Biel of Leoti, Kansas, one 
sister-in-law Katherine Berning of Leoti, Kansas, thirteen 
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-grandchildren.

Dennis "Joe" Pflaum, age 75 of Hays, Kansas, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023, at HaysMed. Joe was born on November 5, 1947, in Falls City, Nebraska to Albert and Leola (Wissman) Pflaum. On October 5, 1969, he married Vicki (Furnas) in the Falls City Methodist Church. Joe was the owner of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Hays for 41 years. In addition to owning the store he drove an Athletic Bus for Fort Hays State, drove a flagger vehicle for Hess Services moving oilfield tanks, as well as helping with car transports for local car dealerships. Joe was an avid outdoorsman particularly hunting and fishing and enjoyed traveling the country. His greatest joy was being able to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife, Vicki Pflaum of Hays; his son, Aaron Matthew Pflaum and significant other, Stacy Budig and his children, twin girls, Brooke and Brittany and his son, Blake all of Hays; his daughter, Lindsay Hart and husband Jamie and their son, Braxton all of Hays; two sisters, Rosie Wanchisen of Denver, Colorado and Joyce Neilsen and husband Jim of Broomfield, Colorado as well as his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents,; a brother, Kenny Pflaum and his wife Lori; and a brother-in-law, Tom Wanchisen. Maurice Earl Phelps, 81, was born on the family farm June 4, 1941, at Quinter, KS. He died February 17, 2023, in Colby, KS. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Edith Phelps; siblings, Wrex, James, Kay and Don; and wife Janet. 
One sister, Shirley (Julius) Bohl, of Florida, and several nieces and nephews survive him. 
Maurice graduated from Quinter High School in 1959. He served in the 
United States Army at Fort Lee, VA. He returned to Colby, KS and 
developed several businesses. He especially enjoyed operating UPac 
Storage.

Maurice also volunteered with the Colby Fire Department for 
several years. His family’s farming operations was closest to his heart 
as part of the 4th generation of farmer’s in Quinter, KS. During his 
last years, Maurice made his home at Fairview Estates.

Floyd Dennis “Denny” Cornwell, 64, of Luray, Kansas, died on Friday, 
February 17, 2023, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Denny was born on December 06, 1958, in Osborne, Kansas, the son of 
Keith B. and Eleanor R. (Walls) Cornwell.&nbsp; He grew up in rural Luray, 
Kansas on the family farm and graduated from Lucas-Luray High School in 
the class of 1978.&nbsp; He lived in the Luray area all his life and worked 
as a farm laborer on a local farm and also worked for many years at 
Heartland Hay.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the Luray United Methodist 
Church.&nbsp; He was an active member in the Russell Muzzle Loaders and Luray
 Fire Department.&nbsp; He loved to hunt, trap, fish, cut firewood and 
enjoyed cutting and carving limestone stone posts.&nbsp; Most of all he 
enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed hanging out
 with his many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Surviving family include his sister Linda Dolton and husband Joe of 
Luray, Kansas;&nbsp; nieces Amy Leiker and husband Marc and Sara Eckinger and
 husband Brett and nephew Benjamin Dolton and wife Rebecca.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service to celebrate Floyd’s life will be held at 11 A.M.
 on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the Osborne City Cemetery in Osborne,
 Kansas.&nbsp; There will be no public viewing before the service.&nbsp; 
Immediately following the graveside service, the family would like to 
invite family and friends in the community to a luncheon at the Luray

 </figure>Floyd Dennis “Denny” Cornwell, 64, of Luray, Kansas, died on Friday, 
February 17, 2023, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.Denny was born on December 06, 1958, in Osborne, Kansas, the son of 
Keith B. and Eleanor R. (Walls) Cornwell.&nbsp; He grew up in rural Luray, 
Kansas on the family farm and graduated from Lucas-Luray High School in 
the class of 1978.&nbsp; He lived in the Luray area all his life and worked 
as a farm laborer on a local farm and also worked for many years at 
Heartland Hay.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the Luray United Methodist 
Church.&nbsp; He was an active member in the Russell Muzzle Loaders and Luray
 Fire Department.&nbsp; He loved to hunt, trap, fish, cut firewood and 
enjoyed cutting and carving limestone stone posts.&nbsp; Most of all he 
enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed hanging out
 with his many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Surviving family include his sister Linda Dolton and husband Joe of 
Luray, Kansas;&nbsp; nieces Amy Leiker and husband Marc and Sara Eckinger and
 husband Brett and nephew Benjamin Dolton and wife Rebecca.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in death by his parents.A graveside service to celebrate Floyd’s life will be held at 11 A.M.
 on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the Osborne City Cemetery in Osborne,
 Kansas.&nbsp; There will be no public viewing before the service.&nbsp; 
Immediately following the graveside service, the family would like to 
invite family and friends in the community to a luncheon at the Luray

Floyd Dennis 'Denny' Cornwell

Kay Lyn Dumler Dinkel, 67, passed away Wednesday February 15,&nbsp;2023, at her home in rural Russell, Kansas, surrounded by her family.&nbsp;

Kay was born March 12, 1955, in Russell to Carl A Dumler and Florence E (Keil) Dumler. She lived her entire life in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1973. She married her forever best friend and love, Bryan on August 10, 1974. They were very proud parents of Brent and Todd. They were the absolute pride and joy of their lives. Kay and Bryan were involved in all of the activities that the boys took part in, and Kay often said that those boys, now young men, fathers and husbands, were the greatest and proudest accomplishment of her life.&nbsp;

This union also brought them four wonderful grandchildren: Braden, Jordyn, Brooklynn and Preston Dinkel. Kay cherished and loved being a grandmother, because she never really had the opportunity to have grandparents in her life, as they passed when she was very young. So, she tried her best to make the most of being a grandmother and being involved in their lives as well.

In her spare time, Kay served as a Den mother for local Cub Scout groups, was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She also served as a County Board Member for the Russell Regional Hospital, and on the Kansas Center for Assisted Living (KCAL) Board.&nbsp;

Kay was actively involved in the Healthcare industry in and around Russell for over 40 years. She earned her Associates Degree in Health Information Technology in 2001 from Hutchinson Community College, and her Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership in 2004 from Friends University. She loved her healthcare colleagues, and especially the patients and residents who touched her life. She always tried her best to be a good friend, co-worker, family member and citizen.

Kay loved her farm and animals, raising oak trees, and was happiest and complete when she and Bryan built their new home on the farm in 2021. They worked side by side together to make it a loving family home.

Kay is survived by her husband Bryan Dinkel of the home; son Brent Dinkel wife Stacy, and children Braden and Jordyn of Manhattan, KS; and son Todd Dinkel wife Andrea, and children Brooklynn and Preston of Hays, KS. Her surviving family also includes sisters Jean Naegele, Rita Forsyth, Jody Myers and brother Carl Dumler Jr.

Celebration of Kay’s Life will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, 24, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp;

Antone “Tony” Herman, 85, St. Peter, Kansas, passed away Monday, 
February 13, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital, Hill City. He was born
 July 15, 1937, in St. Peter, Kansas to Dale and Cecelia (Riedel) 
Herman. He grew up on the family farm with his two brothers and four 
sisters. When 

Tony went to grade school in St. Peter, he and his sister 
Ann spent their weekdays in town with their Grandma Herman. The weekends
 at home on the farm were this farm boy’s favorite days, and summers 
were the best. The Kansas dirt was in his blood even at a young age. 
Tony attended Morland High School graduating in the Class of 1955. Ten 
years later,  May 29, 1965, Tony married the love of his life Sarah 
Brungardt who he had known since  she was a classmate of his sister 
Alfreda. Tony paid no attention to her then, but she definitely had her 
eyes on him! The wedding was held in St. Anthony Church and in true St. 
Peter Community fashion was celebrated with a daylong gathering of 
family, friends, dancing, eating and maybe a celebratory drink or two. 
Tony and Sarah were blessed with the arrival of four beautiful children:
 Melissa, Anthony, Paul and Christina.

However, following 
graduation, Tony worked for his brother Ed  in the oil business. He 
eventually became a District Superintendent for Hallador Petroleum, but 
Tony’s real passion was farming. He took over the family farm in 1965 
when his father was no longer capable and became a full-time  farmer and
 rancher. Of course, on the tractor and combine were his favorite places
 to be. When help was needed, especially during wheat harvest, he had 
his family members. His two brothers-in-law and later his sons were 
recruited to help with his farming endeavors, and let us not forget who 
did all the meals for those crews!

Through the years 
Tony spent his spare time pursuing many hobbies. Carpentry (making 
wooden crosses for his grandchildren and plant/patio tables for Sarah 
and his children), welding, and building model cars, tractors, and 
trucks. And, of course, trips to casinos! He was an avid collector of 
John Deere items, John Wayne memorabilia, belt buckles, cigarette 
lighters, and replicas and pictures of windmills.

Tony’s faith in 
God was extremely strong. He was an active member of St. Anthony 
Catholic Church in St. Peter, a member of the Knights of Columbus and 
served as Grand Knight. Following the closing of St. Anthony’s, Sarah 
and he became members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City. 
Tony also served his community and surrounding area as a volunteer 
fireman for 25 years.

Tony loved Sarah dearly. They went dancing 
frequently. The couple rarely missed being on the dance floor for a 
lively polka or romantic waltz. His four children were very important to
 him. Tony loved attending all their school events. When he couldn’t 
make it to their games, he called to check on how they were doing. One 
occasion, when Melissa was playing basketball in Jennings, the Jennings 
principal found Sarah to tell her she had an emergency phone call. It 
was Tony calling to see how Melissa’s game went! Their family took 
vacations, which always depended on the timing of harvest.  After the 
children were grown and out of the house, Tony was known to call them on
 Sundays just to play polkas for them. After Tony retired one of his 
favorite things to do (with a beer in hand)  was just sitting on the 
swing with Sarah next to him.

Tony’s  grandchildren and great 
grandchildren were especially adored by him. Tony and Sarah really 
enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren taking them to such 
places as the Sternberg Museum, Colorado Springs  and Rolling Hills 
zoos, and the salt mine in Hutchinson. Be assured they will never forget
 Papa’s favorite sayings to them: “Woohoo!”, ”Good stuff Maynard”, “Put 
your shoes on”, “Bookster who he”, and “Ish Ka Bibel”. That last one is a
 German oldie but goodie, that no one really knows the exact meaning!

Tony
 was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Cecelia Herman; brothers 
Ed and Killian Herman; sisters: Hubertina Rossini, Bernita Rempe-Kayser,
 and Ann Marie Clark. 

Left to carry on Tony’s legacy of faith and the 
love for the land are: his wife Sarah, of the home; sons:  Anthony 
(Tracey) Herman, Wakeeney and Paul Herman, Wichita; daughters: Melissa 
(Cayland) Portenier, Hays and Christina (Mitch) Emery, Sedalia, 
Missouri; sister, Alfreda Myers, Hays; grandchildren:  Garrett 
Portenier, Hays, Justin (Tiffany) Portenier, Palmyra, Nebraska, Jared 
Portenier, Gering, Nebraska, Kendra (Jason) Rohr, Dodge City, Brandi 
(Ross) Bugbee, Manhattan, Whitney (Brad) Heimerman, Conway Springs,

Sheridan Charlene Kraft, 78, of Colby, died Thursday, February 16, 2023,
 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS. She was born August 21, 1944, in Hill
 City, KS, to Gerald and Elnora (Cullum) McDowall. 

Sheridan graduated 
from Oakley High School. On May 1, 1965, at Park, KS, she married Robert
 Kraft. To this union, four children were born. Sheridan’s family was 
her life and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren 
and great grandchildren. In her free time she enjoyed cooking, reading, 
sewing and working on genealogy. 
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Robert Kraft Sr. 
She is survived by her children, Chris (Erma) Kraft, Cheryl Kraft (Ron 
Clark), Robert L. (Kaylie) Kraft Jr. and Joni Showalter (Trevor 
Willemsen); grandchildren, Aaron Kraft, Garrett P. Kraft, Alyssa Kraft, 
Christopher Brittain, Alexyss Kraft, Riley Kraft, Baylei Kraft,

Twila May (Dinkel) Dyer, 85, died Friday, February 17, 2023, at Fowler Residential Care, Fowler.

She was born June 15, 1937, on the family farm in Ness County, Kansas,
 the daughter of Andrew and Euphrosine (Bach) Dinkel.&nbsp; She was a 
graduate of Ness City High School and went on to earn her Associates 
Degree in Nursing.&nbsp; She was a Registered Nurse working at Trinity 
Hospital, Dodge City Regional Hospital, Family Planning Clinic, Hodgeman
 County Health Center and the WIC Program at the Ford County Health 
Department.&nbsp; She was a Dodge City resident since 1959 moving from Great 
Bend.

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Altar 
Society, Girl Scout Leader and Retired Nurses Association of Dodge City.

On November 17, 1956, she married James Herbert Dyer at Sacred Heart 
Church in Ness City.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on March 5, 1969.

Survivors include: her six children, Valarie Dyer, Jetmore, Stephanie
 VanDegrift and husband Todd, Dodge City, Dr. James Dyer Jr. and 
husband Alberto, Oak Ridge, New Jersey, Kevin Dyer and wife Susan, 
Greeley, Colorado, Tony Helfrich, Pratt, Kansas and Ashley Helfrich, 
Wichita, Kansas; a brother, Cletus Dinkel, Las Vegas, Nevada; six 
sisters, Marge Dinkel, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mary Coleman and 
husband Jerry, Pink, Oklahoma, Vivian Dinkel, Las Cruses, New Mexico, 
Betty Bryson, Lawrence, Kansas, Pat Gleeson, Azuza, California and Donna
 Hilmes, Othello, Washington; 11 grandchildren, Bryan Dyer, Nelson

David "Dave" Henry Wessel, 88, of Oakley, Kansas. passed away Thursday 
morning, February 16, 2023, at Logan County Senior Living, Oakley, 
Kansas. 
Dave was born on January 6, 1935, in Thomas County, Kansas, the son of 
Joseph and Mary "Mayme" (Mindrup) Wessel. On August 23, 1969, Dave 
married Catherine "Kay" Glassman in Oakley, Kansas, this union was 
blessed with two children, Lance and Mark. In his youth, Dave worked on 
the family farm and as a hired hand for farmers. He then worked for the 
City of Oakley in the Electric Department, as a mechanic for 40 years, 
most notably at Mel's Motors, and later as custodian and maintenance at 
USD 274. He enjoyed his retirement by having several part times jobs. 
Dave was always working on or fixing something, and most of all, he 
enjoyed his friends, family, and grandson Silas. 
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 42 years, Catherine "Kay"
 (Glassman) Wessel; parents, Joseph and Mary "Mayme" (Mindrup) Wessel; 
siblings, Ambrose, Helen Nuessen, Bob, Mary Ann Seymore, Charles, and 
Tom. 
He is survived by his two sons, Lance Wessel (Amanda) and Mark Wessel of
 Oakley, Kansas; his grandson Silas Wessel; two sisters, Sister

David 'Dave' Henry Wessel

Carl Woofter, retired Physician’s Assistant, passed away at KU 
Medical Center on February 13, 2023, at the age of 61. Carl is survived 
by his wife of 11 years, Lee Woofter, his children: Hannah Woofter of 
Kansas City, Missouri, Dylan Woofter of Overland Park, Kansas, Kaitlyn 
Leighton, husband William of Hays, Kansas, AJ Woofter, wife Kali of 
Merriam, Kansas, Corey Stevens, wife Alysse of Holly, Colorado, and step 
daughter, Karlee Bliss, husband Austin of Holdredge, Nebraska; and his 
seven grandchildren, Tegan Woofter of Lawrence, Kansas, Marshall and 
Mason Leighton of Hays, Kansas,  Xander and Jasper Bliss of Holdredge, 
Nebraska, and Jaqueline and Eva Stevens of Holly, Colorado.  He was 
preceded in death by his father, Dale Carrier Woofter, sister, Sherida 
Linn Shoff, and sister-in-law, Donna Jo Woofter.

Carl 
was born in Atwood Kansas on May 11, 1961, to Dale and Gladys Woofter.  
Dale and Gladys settled in Hoxie, Kansas, where Carl would graduate from 
Hoxie High School in 1980.  During his early years, Carl worked at the 
family business, Woofter Pump and Well. He traveled extensively with his
 dad and brothers, pulling and drilling new water wells all around the 
country.  After some time working with his family, Carl ventured out on 
his own, doing many different occupations, hauling drilling mud to oil 
rigs, construction, and a short stint as a jeweler and as an 
entrepreneur owning a Photo Shop.

As a late bloomer to 
Academia, Carl didn’t pursue his career path in the medical field until 
1994 with an Associate’s Degree from Fort Hays State College as a 
Radiology Technician.  In 1997, Carl received his Bachelor of Science 
Degree in Medical Diagnostic Imaging from Fort Hays State College 
graduating Suma Cum Laude. In 1998, he was accepted into the Wichita 
State University Physician Assistant’s Program.  In 2000, he graduated 
Cum Laude as a Physician Assistant and practiced for 15 years until 
declining health forced his early retirement.

As a 
Physician Assistant, Carl was known as the people’s provider.  His 
passion was taking care of patients and providing the best healthcare 
possible to the rural and remote underserved population of any community
 in which he practiced.  He also was a firm believer in investing in the
 future of healthcare.  He did this in partnership with Wichita State 
University by serving as a mentor for students in the Physician 
Assistant’s Program during their rotation in Family Practice.

Carl
 was an avid fisherman and he loved to travel.  Anytime you could 
combine traveling and fishing you could count on Carl with his bags 
packed and his pole ready to go.  His greatest joy was fishing with 
family and friends and his fondest memories fishing with his Dad, Dale.

Visitation
 will be held on Monday, February 20, 2023, 2:00pm to 7:00pm, Mickey – 
Leoppold Funeral Home with family 5:00pm-7:00pm.  Funeral Services will 
be held for Carl at First Christian Church, Hoxie, Kansas on Tuesday, 
February 21, 2023 at 10:30am with Pastor Carl Dumler officiating.

Marie Elaine Drewel, 71, passed away February 15, 2023, at Wesley 
Medical Center in Wichita. She was born on August 26, 1951, in Great 
Bend to Eugene &amp; Okla (Dixon) Addington. She married Tom G. Drewel, 
September 28, 1968, in Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Marie was an MHDD at Larned State 
Hospital. She was a member of the American Legion Post #180 and the 
Legion Riders of Great Bend, the Patriot Guard and Bikers of Central 
Kansas (BOCK). She and her husband were Mr. and Mrs. Claus for the Men’s
 Motorcycle Club Toy Run, for 40 years and passed out ornaments to 
surrounding hospitals for BOCK.&nbsp; Marie especially loved spending time 
with her family and riding her trike.

Survivors include, her son, Tommy Drewel and wife Kristi of Great 
Bend; a daughter, Anneda Mossberg and husband Shawn of Ellinwood; a 
brother, Jimmy Addington of Ellinwood; a sister, Mary Rose Lauber of 
Great Bend; four grandchildren, Chris Julian and wife Bailie, Melissa 
Sanders, Mackenzie Drewel and Madison Drewel; and a great granddaughter,
 Adleigh Julian. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, 
Tom G. Drewel, Sr. ; her daughter, Tammy Drewel; a brother, Bobby 
Addington; and a sister, Rossie Lauber.

Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, 
February 20, 2023, with the family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to

Sandra Sue Meadows, 72, of Gypsum passed away 
Saturday, February 11, 2023. Sandra was born January 9, 1951, in Sharon 
Springs, Kansas, to Walter and Thelma (Miller) Kowalke.

She was a care giver for Bethel Bower for over a decade while being a
 devoted mother and wife/host to several Meadows adventures. She was a 
veteran of the Vietnam War. She always had time for her family and was 
very active in the Smoky Hill Audubon Society and a donator of too many 
charities to list.&nbsp; She will be greatly missed.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her 
two kids, T.J. Meadows and Kathy Lee, of Gypsum; eleven grandchildren; 
three brothers, Ralf Kowalke, Herman Kowalke, and Ervin Kowalke; two 
sisters, Joyce and Pacilla Butford.

A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2023, at 
Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina. A Celebration of Life will 
follow at the home, 419 E. Second St., Gypsum.

Dennis George Younger, age 73,&nbsp;of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on February 14, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born May 23, 1949, in Hays, Kansas, to Baltzar and Helen (Pfannenstiel) Younger. &nbsp;He married Cherri (Walker) on May 23, 2005, in Hays.

He was an oil field truck driver hauling heavy equipment, and pipe for a number of years. &nbsp;Dennis grew up in Hays, attended Hays High School, and served four years in the US Navy. &nbsp;He enjoyed fishing, fixing up lawn mowers, tinkering in his shed, and watching old cartoons.

Survivors include his wife, Cherri Younger, of the home;&nbsp;his children, Amanda Northcutt and husband, Michael, Ft. Dennis George Younger

Mary M.&nbsp;Tholen, 96, Shawnee, Kansas, and formerly of Hays, died February 14, 2023, at the Cottages of Shawnee.

She was born November 12, 1926, in Loretta, Kansas, to Kasper and Cecelia (Weber)&nbsp;Suppes. &nbsp;Mary grew up during the Great Depression but had fond memories of her childhood as the youngest of six children, and briefly lived on a ranch near Lamar, Colorado before moving to Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;On November 6, 1952, she married Dr. Alfred H.&nbsp;Tholen&nbsp;with whom she raised their five children before returning to work as the office manager for her husband’s optometric practice. &nbsp;She and her husband celebrated their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary with a memorable family trip to Colorado one year before her husband’s death in 2003. &nbsp;Mary subsequently moved to the Kansas City area in 2006 to be nearer to one of her daughters but retained her fiercely independent spirit throughout her lifetime.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays and the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254. &nbsp;She&nbsp;was dearly loved and respected as a force to be reckoned with by all who knew her, and will be deeply missed. &nbsp;

She is survived by her five children: Dr. Richard H.&nbsp;Tholen&nbsp;(Sami) of Plymouth, MN, Dr. David J.&nbsp;Tholen&nbsp;of Honolulu, HI, Dr. Joan M. T. Collison of Shawnee, KS, Dr. Anne M. Hirsch (Dale) of West Linn, OR, and Dr. Susan M.&nbsp;Tholen&nbsp;(John Gary) of Kennebunk, ME, as well as seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings. &nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, February 20, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church&nbsp;with Fr. Richard&nbsp;Daise&nbsp;officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 5:30 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. &nbsp;A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30 pm, both on Sunday at the funeral home. &nbsp;

Kathleen Sue (Rome) Gross, age 70,&nbsp;of Hays, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023,&nbsp;at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born January 18, 1953, in Hays, Kansas to Wilfred and Fidelia (Schmidt) Rome. &nbsp;She married Daniel Andrew&nbsp;“Danny”&nbsp;Gross on May 13, 1978, in Hays, Kansas.

Kathleen was a homemaker,&nbsp;worked at Travenol Labs, Vernie’s Hamburger House; and was a volunteer at the Community Assistance Center in Hays for over 30 years. &nbsp;She grew up in Russell, Kansas and was 1971 graduate of Russell High School, and during high school she worked at the Russell A &amp; W. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Daniel&nbsp;“Danny”&nbsp;Gross, of the home;&nbsp;her children, Cody Gross,&nbsp;Hays, KS; Lacy Gross-Augustine and husband, Bryce, Gardner, KS; her grandchildren, Addisson and Camden Augustine; her brothers, Bill Rome and wife, Marsha, Houston, TX;&nbsp;Delmar Rome and wife Deanna, Russell, KS; Jim Rome and wife, Lynn, Salina, KS; her sisters, Linda Rome, Hays, KS; Charlene Petty, Olathe, KS.

Oliver Daniel Forbes passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Children's Hospital in Omaha, NE just shy of his first birthday.

Oliver was born February 11, 2022, in McCook, NE to parents Tyler and Joslyn Forbes.&nbsp; Even though Oliver’s time on earth was short, he was deeply loved by family, friends, many doctors, nurses, and medical professionals who cared for him.&nbsp; He had a smile that would light up the whole world. His love for life was so big. Like an eternal flame, he left a light in every heart he touched.&nbsp; During his time on earth, he brought so many people closer to their faith.&nbsp; He was able to create love between family and friends.&nbsp; Oliver was always smiling. He loved everyone. His cousins were his favorite people. Food and toys were his favorite things, like his toy corn rattle.&nbsp; Wherever you found Oliver, you found his corn.&nbsp; He knew how to make you laugh — even if it was shaking his head no at you, sticking his tongue out, or acting a little shy. Oliver underwent two open heart surgeries, 6 heart catheter procedures, many echoes, and cardiology appointments. All of this gave us one whole year with his smiley self.&nbsp; Oliver was thought of as a warrior by many.&nbsp;&nbsp; His scar was only shown as a symbol of all the fight he had.&nbsp; Oliver lived a fulfilled life and brought many memories to his family.

Oliver was preceded in death by one great great grandma Twila Steinbrink, four great grandparents, Dean Forbes, Virginia Hanes, and Dan (Shirley) Vogel; as well as his grandfather, Jason Pierce.
