Doris Marie Knight Blanke, 93, of Russell, Kansas, and former 
Kensington, Kansas resident, died on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the 
Russell Regional Hospital.

Doris was born on May 4, 1929, in Phillips County, Kansas, the 
daughter of Howard and Julia (Lala) Smith.&nbsp; She was born and raised on 
the family farm south of Kirwin, Kansas.&nbsp; She attended Jaybird country 
school through grade school.&nbsp; Her father died from tuberculosis when she
 was 12 and her mother remarried when she was 14.&nbsp; The family moved to a
 farm north of Kensington, Kansas, and Doris graduated from Kensington 
High School.&nbsp; 

She was united in marriage to Glen Knight on July 20, 
1947, in Kensington.&nbsp; From this union Doris and Glen were blessed 
raising four children Jerry, Terry, Glenda and Cindy.&nbsp; 

She was an 
accountant supervisor for Kansas Nebraska Energy for 28 years and worked
 as a county clerk, waitress and doctor’s assistant.&nbsp; Doris found love a
 second time and was united in marriage to Kenny Blanke on October 30, 
2000, in Athol, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of Athol 
Congregational Church in Athol, Kansas.&nbsp; She was also a member of the 
American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star.&nbsp; She enjoyed dancing, 
working crossword puzzles, traveling with Kenny to all 50 states, 
camping and getting together with her family.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed 
snowbirding to Arizona with Kenny and spending time with her many 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Kenny of the home, sons Jerry 
Knight and wife Vicki of Loveland, Colorado, and Terry Knight of North 
Platte, Nebraska; daughters Glenda Ratliff and husband Dennis of Smith 
Center, Kansas, and Cindy Beckmann and companion David Stewart of 
Gaylord, Kansas;&nbsp; brother Larry Westerman and wife Tonya of Kensington, 
Kansas; Kenny’s children Gene Blanke and wife Marsha of Lakehills, 
Texas, David Blanke and wife Pat of Florissant, Missouri, Heidi Blanke 
of Ballwin, Missouri, and Star Gates and husband Greg of Wichita, 
Kansas;&nbsp; 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Glen Knight 
on May 7, 1998, infant sister Gwen, step-father Frank Westerman 
grandchildren Sammy and Cory Reeves and son in-law David Beckmann.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, 
March 11, 2023, at the Athol Church of Christ in Athol, Kansas, with 
Pastor Becky Sadler officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Germantown 
Cemetery in North Kensington, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to
 8 P.M. on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary
 in Russell, Kansas, with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. 
Friday evening. &nbsp;A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 PM at the 
mortuary. &nbsp;

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Kensington 
American Legion or Athol Church of Christ and sent in care of 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas who are in charge of

Robert E. “Bob” Fisher, 84, Marysville, died Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday, March 6 at
 Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville, followed by a Rosary service at 7 p.m. 
at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. The funeral service will
 be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 7 at St. Gregory’s Catholic 
Church, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Gregory’s Catholic
 Cemetery. Father Quentin Schmitz will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Michael and Matthew Fisher, Ryan Drinkgern, Darrin and Brant Kieffer, and Noah Kramer.

The honorary pallbearers will be Jaclyn, Brett, Brandon, and Daniel 
Fisher, Morgan (Christian) Kramer, Jacee Christian, Caitlin Gillespie, 
Carolyn McIff, Sydney Fisher, Bryer Wilson, Jared, Blake, and Chad

Bob was born on November 24, 1938, to Clements and Pauline (Stubert) 
Fisher near Antonino, KS.&nbsp; He graduated from Ellis High School in 1956.&nbsp;
 On September 17, 1960, he was united in marriage with Donna Lee Staab 
in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, KS. This union was blessed with 
six children.

Bob worked as a butcher out of high school and then in the Hays area 
as a carpenter. He also held a real estate license before moving to 
Marysville in 1972.&nbsp; He worked for Bower Construction until the late 
80’s. He was a highly skilled carpenter and started his own carpentry 
business.&nbsp; He followed his years of carpentry by becoming the 
maintenance supervisor for Valley Heights High School. After retiring, 
he continued service by working for the Oak Tree Inn and &nbsp;up until his 
passing, kept himself busy cleaning the local theater.

He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and was a 3rd Degree
 member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Family was always his number one 
priority. He enjoyed watching sports (especially when being played by 
his children and grandchildren), K-State, the Kansas City Chiefs and the
 Kansas City Royals. He was, above all, a loving husband, father, and 
grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carrie in 
1995; brothers, Alfred, Billy, Eddie, and Clarence Fisher, and sisters, 
Esther Bieker and Irene Bieker.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Donna; children, Mark (Jodi) 
Fisher, Bennington, KS, Kim (Steve) Christian, Omaha, NE, Jeff 
(Jennifer) Fisher, Robin Fisher (Jordan Ring), and Sandi (Eric) Wilson, 
all of Marysville, KS; a sister, Helen Pfeifer, Hays, KS; and eighteen 
grandchildren: Ryan Drinkgern, Mike, Matt, Jaclyn, Brett, Brandon, and 
Daniel Fisher; Morgan (Christian) Kramer, Jacee Christian, Caitlin 
Gillespie, Carolyn McIff, Sydney Fisher, Darrin and Brant Kieffer, Bryer
 Wilson, Jared, Blake, and Chad Rinderer, and 9 great-grandchildren,

Kenneth W. Stephenson, 68, died Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.

He was born June 24, 1954 at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Loy Asher 
and Esther Lorraine (Weaver) Stephenson.&nbsp; He attended school in Oakley, 
Kansas, where he was part of two State titles in Cross Country and remained
 an avid runner later in life.&nbsp; He worked for Tarbert Construction and 
later for Kan Tex Feeders for 14 years both in Ulysses, Kansas, and moved
 to Dodge City several years ago.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City 
and participated in Special Olympics where he ran the mile.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
putting models together, especially model airplanes.&nbsp; He always wanted 
to stay busy doing something.

Survivors include: his mother, Dodge City; a brother, Larry 
Stephenson and wife Pam, Dodge City; a sister, Sherry Kirby and husband 
Ronald, Hugo, Colorado; 4 nieces and 2 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, uncles, aunts and grandparents.

Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at the
 Riley Memorial Cemetery in Chautauqua County, Kansas.&nbsp; There will be no
 public viewing, cremation has taken place.

Wanda Lee Viola Gano

Alexis Briann Buxton, age 22, kissed this
 world goodbye and danced into heaven on March 4th, 2023, after 
experiencing a perforated ulcer.&nbsp;

Alexis, but called Lexi by all those that loved her, was born on 
August 14th, 2000, in Carson City, Nevada. At just a few weeks old, she 
joined her parents and older sister in Scott City, Kansas, where she 
lived the next 22 years.&nbsp;

Lexi will always be remembered for her infectious smile, love of sushi, and vibrant hair.&nbsp;

Her boundless compassion for animals, particularly strays, kept her 
parents continuously surprised. The Heavenly reunion with her dog, 
Cannon, that recently passed was sure to be joyous.

Lexi also had a unique knack for communicating with children. 
Children were drawn to her, and Lexi was able to find uninhibited joy in
 the smallest things.

She loved drawing, music, and crafts, especially potion making at her grandma’s when she was younger.

Her family finds peace in knowing she was welcomed to heaven by her 
Grandpa Jack Buxton, Grandpa Eugene Eckels, and Grandma Ann Eckels.

Lexi will forever be remembered by her Parents - Jerry and Jynette

James “Jimmy” Earl Addington, 74, passed away March 4, 2023, at his 
home in rural Ellinwood. He was born on March 6, 1948, to Eugene &amp;

A longtime area resident, Jimmy was an electrician for C&amp;P 
Electric and M&amp;M Line Construction. He enjoyed carpentry and 
remodeling trailer houses. Jimmy loved music and collected many albums 
throughout the years. He enjoyed helping his family and friends but 
especially loved family gatherings.

Survivors include, his sister, Mary Rose Lauber of Great Bend; many 
nieces and nephews, including, Anneda Mossberg (Shawn) of Ellinwood, 
Raven Hamit (David) of Great Bend, Tommy Drewel (Kristi) of Great Bend, 
Kenneth Rowe of Ellinwood, Larry Lauber (Jayda) of Great Bend, Charles 
Rowe of Great Bend, William Rowe of Great Bend and Jason Lauber of 
Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bobby 
Addington; and two sisters, Rossie Lauber and Marie Drewel.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, 
2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30

George Richard Brown, 81, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away at 8:21 a.m., 
Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. Richard was born in La Crosse, Kansas, on August 13, 1941, a son of George Brown Jr. and Dora (Schweitzer) Brown. Richard
 attended Danby Valley grade school, rural Brownell, Kansas, and 
graduated from Brownell High School, Brownell, Kansas in 1959. Through
 the years Richard worked as a farmer, a foreman and supervisor for San 
Ore Construction, of McPherson, JH Shears as a superintendent of road 
construction, Hutchinson, Kansas, Farmland and CHS as a mechanic until 
he retired. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting, 
loved feeding his outdoor critters, and spending time with his friends 
and family, especially all his grand kids. Richard Brown was 
united in marriage to Carol Davis on June 1, 1963, in McCracken, Kansas. 
The young couple established their first home together in McCracken. 
This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Shelley and Gary. He
 is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol Brown, of Hesston, 
Kansas; his children Shelley Drassen and her husband Joe of O'Fallen, 
Illinois and Gary Brown of McPherson, Kansas; his sister Ann Chandley 
and her husband John of Hutchinson, Kansas. He is also survived 
by his two grandchildren, Megan Richmond and her husband Matt and 
Allison Drassen and his great-grandchild, Tyson Reeves. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation

Donna Marie Preston, 85, died on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Western Plains
 Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born on April 22, 1937, at 
Thayer, Missouri the daughter of Donald &amp; Opal (Hammond) Edwards. 
She married William P. Preston on May 27, 1955, at Garden City. He died 
on July 1, 1999. 
Donna lived in several different places growing up including Chinook, 
Montana, Hays, Kansas, Great Bend, Kansas, and Blackwell, Oklahoma, before
 coming to Garden City and graduating from Garden City High School. She
 was mainly a homemaker for her family but had also worked as a Medical 
transcriptionist at St Catherine Hospital, substitute cook for Garden 
City schools and receptionist at Garnand Funeral Home. She enjoyed 
going to the Finney County Senior Center to play cards and also her 
other card playing groups but her biggest joy was raising her kids and 
grandkids. 
She is survived by her 2 Sons- Billy &amp; Ann Preston of Elk City, 
Oklahoma and Rob Preston of Garden City, 4 Grandchildren and 2 
Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband 
and Brother- John Edwards. 
Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home 
with Rev Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View 
Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to Service Time

 Elnora Greathouse, was born March 18, 1930 in Nekoma, Kansas, to Onie 
and Nora (Baldwin) Mills. She passed away March 2, 2023, at the age of 
92, in Hutchinson, KS.

She attended Nekoma grade school, La Crosse High School and Fort Hays, and was a graduate from Sterling College.

June
 began her teaching career in 1948 and continued for most of her life. 
She taught in Yoder and Nickerson Elementary as a kindergarten teacher 
for 32 years.

She married the love of her life, Jerry 
Greathouse, on January 29, 1956, in Nekoma KS during a blizzard. They 
were happily married for 45 years before his passing in 2001.

June
 is survived by her son, Rick (Valerie Avery) Greathouse, and daughter, 
Connie (Larry Flores) Johnson, grandson Justin Bright, and great 
grandchildren, Killian and Sawyer Bright.

She was a member of 
several local organizations, including Low Vision Group, Elliots 
Widowers Group and the Horticulture Club. 

She was a volunteer with RSVP 
tax, the rec commission and the horticulture club.

Frank D. Jordan, 62, died on Friday, February 17, 2023, at his home in 
Hutchinson. He was born on February 13, 1961, at Scott City the son of 
Frank A. &amp; Von ( Davidson) Jordan. He married Shelly Stern and they
 later divorced. 
Frank attended Shields Grade School and Dighton High School. After his 
education he lived in Dighton and worked for area farmers and drove 
trucks. He later moved to Garden City and worked as a mechanic at 
American Implement. In 2022 he moved to Hutchinson to be closer to his 
daughter and worked at Home Depot. He enjoyed fishing, going to Scott 
Lake but especially being with his daughter and doing things with her. 
He is survived by his Daughter- Trish Jordan of Hutchinson, Sister- Jody
 &amp; Al Lafferty of Weatherford, Texas, Brother- R.C &amp; Elizabeth 
Jordan of Hays and Sister- Susan &amp; Marion Sisco of Garden City. He 
was preceded in death by his Parents and 3 Brothers- Terry Jordan, Chuck
 Jordan and Craig Jordan.

March 4, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, 
La Crosse, Kansas.

Effie was born July 10, 1925, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of
 Charles Ephram and Ona Candida (Pace) Million.&nbsp; She was a lifelong 
resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; She owned and operated Effie’s Place 
in Rush Center, Kansas, for &nbsp;50+ years before her retirement.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

On June 9, 1942, she married Jefferson “Jeff” Crowell.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 25, 1987.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Gary Crowell (Carol), Rush Center, 
Kansas; one daughter, Linda Woods (Dave), Rush Center, Kansas; five 
grandchildren, Steven Crowell (Patty), Clearwater, Kansas, Trevor 
Crowell (Judy), McCracken, Kansas, Bryan Crowell, Russell, Kansas, Amy 
Gassmann (Eric), Grainfield, Kansas, and Julia Oetting (Blake), Oklahoma
 City, Oklahoma; 13 great grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew, Jacob, Rachel, 
Ryan, Gage, Cody, Nichole, Wyatt, Lauren, Dylan, Grayden, and Kinsley;

John Leo Hayden, 78, died Friday, March 3, 2023, in the presence of 
his loving family and friends.&nbsp; Leo was born on February 3, 1945, in 
Goodland, Kansas, to Leo Bailey Hayden and Mary (Ellison) Hayden.&nbsp; He 
demonstrated both strength and a fighting spirit from the very 
beginning.&nbsp; As a young man of just 100 pounds “soaking wet,” his dad 
taught him how to box.&nbsp; He was so proficient at boxing, that it was also
 his dad who made him quit!&nbsp; Effort was also something Leo didn’t lack.&nbsp;
 At a very early age, he demonstrated outstanding, natural athletic 
ability and strove to “outwork the competition.” He excelled in all 
sports and helped to lead his teams at Goodland High School to 
championships.&nbsp; He was a natural leader and all that played with him 
became lifelong friends.

While setting several records playing football at Fort Hays State 
University, Leo found the love of his life in Judy Marcotte Hayden.&nbsp; He 
pursued his wife with the same determination that he approached all 
areas of his life.&nbsp; Leo would say, “Judy, I’m watching you walk!”&nbsp; Upon 
graduation from college, she finally succumbed to his efforts and they 
got married on August 31,1968 and the rest reads like a fairytale.&nbsp; He 
loved her with all he was and the two of them shared that love with 
their 3 children and 8 grandchildren.&nbsp; His faith grew each year and in 
times of great tragedy, he was their rock.&nbsp; He helped his family weather
 the losses of his nephews, his parents, his brother-in-law, and several
 close friends.&nbsp;

Leo was always coaching.&nbsp; He coached his own kids and everyone else’s
 too.&nbsp; He certainly wasn’t shy, always demanding their best; helping 
them build the character, friendship, and bonds that would last a 
lifetime.&nbsp; Whether it was winning the State Championship in baseball 
with a team that “didn’t even know they were good,” to mentoring young 
men and women in their real estate careers, he was always able to help 
people to be their best and to achieve more than they might have 
dreamed.&nbsp; After all, that was who he was and he wanted others to 
approach life the same way.&nbsp; His life was both simple and complex, but 
always approached with an easiness that made others marvel.&nbsp; He excelled
 at making time for his family, hard work, and having fun!

Leo loved hunting, playing golf at Sugar Hills, and watching sports.&nbsp;
 From sharing the Hayden family recipe for pheasant and quail to playing
 “Pig and Wolf” at the course he loved so much, Leo’s passion for people
 and life was the center of his universe.&nbsp;

Building a real estate company with his family also gave Leo great 
pleasure.&nbsp; Mostly, he liked people and found his work “easy” as he was 
good at his craft and he loved what he did.&nbsp; Still coaching, he helped 
many people and their families understand that “work is work, but family
 is what is most important.”&nbsp; His company, Hayden Outdoors, is a family 
within itself with deep roots and traditions that will surely continue 
to cherish their founder and build upon his legacy.

Leo’s relationship with God grew daily.&nbsp; Alongside his wife, who was 
his best teacher, he lead his family down the “right path.”&nbsp; The prayers
 he lead at hunting camps, work functions, and family occasions will no 
doubt be famous for a long time and will never be duplicated! He was 
proof that faith can and does make life better.

Five years ago, Leo was hit hard with the news that he “had 3 months 
to live.”&nbsp; True to his nature, he attacked the news and the diagnosis 
head on. &nbsp;He leaned on his wife and family and rarely complained.&nbsp; One 
of his favorite sayings was “Never Give Up…Never Give Up.” He certainly 
didn’t and, even while dying, taught his family even more about 
determination, strength, and faith.

Together, we celebrate our husband, dad, grandpa, papa, friend, 
mentor, coach, and just one hell of a good man.&nbsp; His legacy will live on
 in all of us and we will be better for knowing and loving him.&nbsp; John 
Leo Hayden truly made the world a better place.&nbsp; “If you see me getting 
smaller…….”

Leo is survived by his wife, Judy (Marcotte) Hayden; 3 children, Dax 
(Michelle) Hayden, Arin Thomas, and Seth (Renata) Hayden; 8 
grandchildren, Brin and Madeline Hayden, Olivia, Avalyn, and Vivian 
Thomas, and Sophia, Paige, and Kayne Hayden; his sister Patty (Hayden) 
Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his 
parents, Leo Bailey Hayden and Mary (Ellison) Hayden, his nephews Mathew
 and Marsh Thompson, and his brother-in-law, Mac Thompson.&nbsp;

pursued his wife with the same determination that he approached all 
areas of his life.&nbsp; Leo would say, “Judy, I’m watching you walk!”&nbsp; Upon 
graduation from college, she finally succumbed to his efforts and they 
got married on August 31,1968 and the rest reads like a fairytale.&nbsp; He 
loved her with all he was and the two of them shared that love with 
their 3 children and 8 grandchildren.&nbsp; His faith grew each year and in 
times of great tragedy, he was their rock.&nbsp; He helped his family weather
 the losses of his nephews, his parents, his brother-in-law, and several
 close friends.&nbsp;Leo was always coaching.&nbsp; He coached his own kids and everyone else’s
 too.&nbsp; He certainly wasn’t shy, always demanding their best; helping 
them build the character, friendship, and bonds that would last a 
lifetime.&nbsp; Whether it was winning the State Championship in baseball 
with a team that “didn’t even know they were good,” to mentoring young 
men and women in their real estate careers, he was always able to help 
people to be their best and to achieve more than they might have 
dreamed.&nbsp; After all, that was who he was and he wanted others to 
approach life the same way.&nbsp; His life was both simple and complex, but 
always approached with an easiness that made others marvel.&nbsp; He excelled
 at making time for his family, hard work, and having fun!Leo loved hunting, playing golf at Sugar Hills, and watching sports.&nbsp;
 From sharing the Hayden family recipe for pheasant and quail to playing
 “Pig and Wolf” at the course he loved so much, Leo’s passion for people
 and life was the center of his universe.&nbsp;Building a real estate company with his family also gave Leo great 
pleasure.&nbsp; Mostly, he liked people and found his work “easy” as he was 
good at his craft and he loved what he did.&nbsp; Still coaching, he helped 
many people and their families understand that “work is work, but family
 is what is most important.”&nbsp; His company, Hayden Outdoors, is a family 
within itself with deep roots and traditions that will surely continue 
to cherish their founder and build upon his legacy.Leo’s relationship with God grew daily.&nbsp; Alongside his wife, who was 
his best teacher, he lead his family down the “right path.”&nbsp; The prayers
 he lead at hunting camps, work functions, and family occasions will no 
doubt be famous for a long time and will never be duplicated! He was 
proof that faith can and does make life better.Five years ago, Leo was hit hard with the news that he “had 3 months 
to live.”&nbsp; True to his nature, he attacked the news and the diagnosis 
head on. &nbsp;He leaned on his wife and family and rarely complained.&nbsp; One 
of his favorite sayings was “Never Give Up…Never Give Up.” He certainly 
didn’t and, even while dying, taught his family even more about 
determination, strength, and faith.Together, we celebrate our husband, dad, grandpa, papa, friend, 
mentor, coach, and just one hell of a good man.&nbsp; His legacy will live on
 in all of us and we will be better for knowing and loving him.&nbsp; John

Lifelong Phillips County resident Jan R. Schemper passed away Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Logan Manor, 
Logan, KS, at the age of 85.

He was born February 10, 1938, in Prairie View, KS the son of Robert “Bob” and Wauneta (Wolters) Schemper.

Jan was united in marriage to Eileen M. Stutterheim on June 1, 1957, in Prairie View, KS.

Survivors include his wife Eileen of 
Prairie View, son Josh Schemper and wife Elizabeth of Prairie View; 
daughters Joy Prendergast and husband Richard of Salina, Nancy Molzahn 
and husband Doug of Agra, and Jodi Bretz and husband Mark of Prairie 
View; brothers Kenneth and wife Bev of Prairie View and Douglas and wife
 Jeniece of Long Island; sisters Carolyn Tien and husband Arlo of 
Prairie View, Sandra Dole and husband Dick of Almena; a sister-in-law 
Joyce Schemper of Kearney, NE; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great

Jan R. Schemper

Ernest Albert Schlatter, 83 of Lebanon passed away March 3, 2023, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS.

Ernie
 was born February 20, 1940, on the family home south of Lebanon, Smith 
County, Kansas.  He was one of three children of Albert (Curly) and Ruth
 (Pletcher) Schlatter.  He attended the Chalk Mound one room school 
house until 8th grade and then attended Lebanon High School, where he 
graduated in 1958.  Ernie was active in football, basketball, track and 
FFA.  In his high school yearbook, Ernie prophesied that he wanted to be
 the biggest farmer south of Hwy 36.  He received FFA’s highest honor, 
the American Farmer Degree in 1960.  After high school, Ernie joined his
 brother Jim to pursue his dream of farming.  On the farm, they raised 
hogs, cattle, and crops.  He enjoyed hunting, trapping and softball.

Ernie
 married Barbara Allen on May 10, 1964, at the Oak Creek Christian 
Church south of Lebanon.  To this union were born a son, Walter 
Frederick, on March 17, 1965, and a daughter, Sheila Marie on March 24, 
1968.  Ernie joined the National Guard in August of 1961 and received a 
medical discharge in 1966 at the rank of Sergeant E-5.  He told stories 
of summer camp and serving at Fort Knox during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  He talked about how cold it was during the winter and how the Cubans 
being trained there would not leave their barracks.

He was a 
member of the Oak Creek Christian Church and served as a deacon for many
 years.  Ernie served on many boards in the area including Kansas Star 
Base, Kansas Wheat Commission, Midway Coop, Smith County Extension and 
Smith County Soil Conservation for 30 years.  Over the years, Ernie was 
active in K-State Extension activities and hosted many crop plots.  One 
year, he helped his granddaughter, Ashley with a wheat plot as a 4-H 
project.  Ernie and Barbara were awarded the 2006 Kansas Master Farmer 
and Master Homemaker awards.  Ernie won many crop yield contests over 
the years through the extension program.  In 2017, he won the Kansas 
State Soybean Yield contest on a no-till dryland division with 95.95 
bushels per acre.

Ernie was excited that his son received the 
American Farmer Degree in 1985, which was 25 years after he had received
 his degree.  Ernie was proud to see his granddaughter receive her 
American Farmer Degree in 2013 at the Louisville, Kentucky FFA 
convention.  While at the convention he was able to see his cousin Tony 
Small, who worked for the National FFA organization.

Barbara 
played a pivotal role in the family farm operation and fought a long 
battle of lung disease and passed away on October 16, 2012.  Ernie 
married Carla (Badger) Naasz on July 24, 2015, at the American Lutheran 
Church in Smith Center, KS.  Carla assisted with the farm operation and 
as Ernie’s health declined, she kept the farm going by running the 
day-to-day operations.

Ernie was a big fan of WWII history and 
read many books on the subject.  Part of the fascination was due to his 
uncle Walter F. Schlatter serving in WWII and passed on the stories from
 family members of Walter visiting home before being shipped off to 
England and later being killed in battle.  In later years, Ernie took a 
trip to see his uncles grave in France and had a picture taken at his 
graveside marker.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Carla (Naasz) 
Schlatter of the home, son Walter (Kim) Schlatter of Bates City, MO, 
daughter Sheila (Dwayne) Lorence of Lebanon, KS, Brock (Sheri) Naasz, 
Ami Naasz (Marshall Kohman), Brandon (Shelby) Naasz all of Downs, KS;   
grandchildren Dustin  (Deborah) Schlatter of Tucson, AZ, Clinton and 
Dylan Schlatter of Bates City, MO, Ashley (Jarrod) Blackburn of 
Marshfield, WI, Aubrey and Gavin Naasz, Keegan and Korbin Kohl, Avery, 
Ryder, and Ryp Naasz al of Downs, KS;  one great grandson (2 months) 
Tayson Dean Blackburn of Marshfield, WI;   one sister, Sharlyn Long of

Ernest Albert Schlatter

Wesley James Rahjes, son of Louie and Hilda Rahjes, was born October 
15, 1927, north of Smithfield, Nebraska.  Shortly after, his family 
moved to Kansas where they resided on several different farms throughout
 the Agra/Kensington area.

Wesley went to high school 
in Agra from 1941-1945.  He then enlisted with the United States Navy in
 November 1945, and left for the Naval Training Center in San Diego, 
California. He finished his training in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Upon 
completion, Wesley was then sent to Guam with the Naval Air Transport 
Service.  Later, he was transferred to Seattle, Washington, where he 
remained in active duty until his honorable discharge in 1949.

Wesley
 moved back home to begin his civilian life and started working on the 
farm with his father.  On one visit to Frank’s Cafe in downtown 
Kensington, he met a lovely young woman named Martha Isernhagen, who was
 working as a waitress.  One year later they were married at Zion 
Lutheran Church in St. Francis, Kansas.

They both 
resided in Kensington until the Korean War broke out in mid-1950, and 
Wesley was recalled to active duty.  On April 3, 1951, their first child
 (Ronald) was born.  Soon after, Wesley was ordered to leave for Japan 
and Korea.  He returned to the United States in 1952 after his second 
and final discharge.  Wesley and Martha remained in their original home 
until they were able to buy an 80-acre farm just southeast of 
Kensington.  By February 1956, they were blessed with two more children 
(Donald and Douglas).

After building their own new 
house, the family returned to Kensington in 1971.  When their three sons
 graduated college, they each chose to come back home and farm. Wesley 
enjoyed working alongside his sons, eventually developing a family farm 
they expanded together.  In 1989, Wesley began to gradually retire from 
farm work.  After his retirement, Wesley enjoyed a few part time jobs as
 well as taking part in the annual harvests.  Both Wesley and Martha 
enjoyed driving around the countryside making routine checks on various 
facets of the farm and occasionally “sneaking” into harvest suppers.

Wesley
 was preceded in death by his parents, Louie (Hilda) Rahjes; sisters, 
Arvella (Rahjes) Riat and Darlene (Rahjes) Miller; Wife, Martha Rahjes. 
 He was survived by three sons, Ron (Cindy), Don (Carol), Doug (Wanda) 
Rahjes, all of Kensington. He was also survived by 6 grandchildren and 8
 great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by numerous relatives,
 friends, and acquaintances that touched his life over the past 95 
years.

Wesley built and left a legacy many of us can 
only dream of.  He will be missed, but not forgotten.  It warms our 
hearts to know he is now free of pain and reunited with the love of his 
life.  Rest in peace, Dad!

James “Jim”&nbsp; Henry Popp, 85 years 
old, of Quinter, Ks., passed away on March 2, 2023.&nbsp; Jim was born at 
home, on the farm, north of Grainfield, Ks. on June 7, 1937.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Hoxie High School.

Jim was united in marriage to Barbara
 Louise Gaylord on October 20, 1962. They were married for 60 years. He 
worked as a farmer on his and Barbara’s farm until retirement.&nbsp; Jim 
enjoyed woodwork, chainsaw carving, and collecting antiques. He was also
 actively involved in church and Kiwanis.&nbsp;

Jim Popp is survived by spouse, 
Barbara, daughter, Garneita Davis &amp; husband Don of Tulsa OK, Daryl 
Popp and wife Carolyn of Hill City, KS, Yvonne Hackler &amp; husband 
Bill of WaKeeney, KS. They have 12 grandchildren and 6 
great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by a sister, Dorothy 
Cunningham of Granville, OH,&nbsp; Mary Beaver &amp; husband Larry of 
Quinter, KS, Conrad Popp &amp; wife Pam of Quinter, KS, Alberta Bittel 
&amp; husband JD of Overland Park, KS, and many family, loved ones, and

old, of Quinter, Ks., passed away on March 2, 2023.&nbsp; Jim was born at 
home, on the farm, north of Grainfield, Ks. on June 7, 1937.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Hoxie High School.Jim was united in marriage to Barbara
 Louise Gaylord on October 20, 1962. They were married for 60 years. He 
worked as a farmer on his and Barbara’s farm until retirement.&nbsp; Jim 
enjoyed woodwork, chainsaw carving, and collecting antiques. He was also
 actively involved in church and Kiwanis.&nbsp;Jim Popp is survived by spouse, 
Barbara, daughter, Garneita Davis &amp; husband Don of Tulsa OK, Daryl 
Popp and wife Carolyn of Hill City, KS, Yvonne Hackler &amp; husband 
Bill of WaKeeney, KS. They have 12 grandchildren and 6 
great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by a sister, Dorothy 
Cunningham of Granville, OH,&nbsp; Mary Beaver &amp; husband Larry of 
Quinter, KS, Conrad Popp &amp; wife Pam of Quinter, KS, Alberta Bittel 
&amp; husband JD of Overland Park, KS, and many family, loved ones, and 
friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jim was preceded in death by his 
parents Albert Jonathan &amp; Mary Mabel Popp (McWilliams), brother 
Lorrel Popp &amp; wife Ruth, brother David Popp &amp; wife Lynn, 
daughter Joyce Melinda Popp, and grandson, Levi James Hackler.&nbsp;&nbsp;Services will be held on March 7, 
2023, at 10:00 am at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Services will be 
conducted by Pastor Gary Simon. Burial will take place immediately after
 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.&nbsp;Visitation will be on March 6, 2023, between the hours of 5:00-6:30 pm at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, KS.&nbsp;Memorial contributions are suggested

James 'Jim'  Henry Popp

Dennis Dean Korbelik, age 81, of Kanorado passed away February 22, 2023, at his home, after a short illness.&nbsp;

Dennis was born in Goodland to Joe and Genevieve (Fink) Korbelik of 
Kanorado, where he went to school and grew up in a home built by his 
grandfather, Clayton Briggs, one of Kanorado’s founding fathers.&nbsp;

The family story on Dennis catching a train ride, without permission,
 and being little more than a toddler at the time, spoke to his 
adventurous spirit.&nbsp;

Most of his working life was doing farm related jobs. Dennis always 
said he never retired. He planted fruit trees, had a small lawn mowing 
business, was a two-term mayor, and took care of business in timely 
ways. He was also caretaker of his mother who wanted to live in her own 
home until she passed away shortly after her 100th birthday.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his grandparents whose original tree 
claim, officially became Briggs Park in 1976; parents, Joe and 
Genevieve; sister, Linda; and wife, Donna Rhoads-Korbelik.&nbsp;

Dennis is survived by his wife, Dagmar of Kanorado; daughter, Deneyce
 (David) Ackerman of Wamego, Kansas; grandchildren, Emma, Cooper and 
Maegan; several Korbelik relatives in the Goodland and Burlington area; 
and Jack Day a high school classmate, now living in New Mexico.&nbsp;

Dennis Dean Korbelik

Eldon Don Gager was born October 29, 1935, in Woodston, Kansas, to Agnes
 Anne (Nech) and Clyde (Sliv) Merle Gager. Eldon grew up in Woodston and
 graduated from Woodston High School with the class of 1954. He 
continued his education at Ft. Hayes College in Hayes, Kansas. 
 On February 23, 1955, Eldon enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he served
 on the Essex-Class Aircraft Carrier the USS Antietam. While on the 
Antietam, Eldon was engaged in producing fresh water for the ship and 
was an MP during shore leave. Eldon was honorably discharged February 
13, 1959. On January 14, 1992, Eldon married Shirley Harrison 
in Imperial, Nebraska, and the couple settled in Imperial where they 
lived for 31 years. Eldon was employed as a police officer in several 
communities including McCook, Ogallala and Imperial. In addition to his 
service as a police officer, he also worked at the Union 76 Station, 
Cook Ready Mix, Groff Ag and the Chase County Transit. Eldon 
enjoyed playing the guitar and singing, crafts, hunting, playing pitch 
with friends, and fishing (which was his passion). He especially loved 
spending time with his family. Eldon passed away Monday, January 16, 2023, at the Chase County Community Hospital, Imperial, NE. He was 87 years of age. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents: Agnes and Clyde Gager. Survivors Include: Wife: Shirley of Imperial, NE. Son: Glenn (Bronco) Gager and wife, Laurie, of Lemoyne, NE. Richard Lee Unruh died Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Greeley County 
Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He was born July 25, 1936, in Halstead, 
Kansas.

Eighty-six years ago, Richard was born to Jake C. Unruh and Caroline 
(Seiler) Unruh at their home in Halstead, Kansas. He grew up in that 
same house on his parents’ farm. He attended a country grade school west
 of Halstead. His first jobs were doing chores and field work for a 
neighbor and carpentry work at various locations.

He met his beloved wife through his sister’s courtship. &nbsp;On July 24, 
1955, Richard and LaDean Lynn Unruh were married at the Pence Mennonite 
Church. &nbsp;Most of his married life was spent in Wallace County where he 
enjoyed farming and attending the Wesleyan Church.

He loved his family and enjoyed the holidays and summer trips to 
Taylor Park in Colorado with his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and 
Eva. &nbsp;He spent many weekends watching stock car races. He also enjoyed 
skiing and never missed an opportunity to hit the slopes with his wife, 
children and the county ski club.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife LaDean; his parents, Jake
 and Caroline Unruh; and his older brothers Alvin, Edwin and Glen.

He is survived by a sister, Lorene Hiebert of Iroquois, South Dakota;
 sister, Dorothy Unruh of Greensburg, Kansas; brother, Donald Unruh of 
Newton, Kansas; and brother, David Unruh and his wife Nola, of Gentry, 
Arkansas. He is also survived by his children: three sons, Dennis and 
his wife Lois of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania; Gary of Gaithersburg, 
Maryland; Jason and his wife Lori of Sharon Springs, Kansas; and 
daughter Linda and her husband Kent Blakely, of Helena, Montana. His 
treasures were his grandchildren: Dennis’ children, Jonathan, Heidi, 
Katrina, and Jordan; Gary’s son Justin; Jason’s children, Megan, Nathan,
 Isaac and Zachary; and Linda’s daughters, Lauren, Maike and Natalie. He
 is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.

 Marie Tyler, 75 years of age, formerly of&nbsp;Hays, Kansas entered into 
rest on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the Methodist Hospital in San 
Antonio, Texas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born on December 11, 1947, in Phillipsburg, 
Kansas, to Harold and Alma (Loyd) Gray.

She
 was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School in 1965, Phillipsburg, 
Kansas. She went on to attend Wichita Business College, Wichita, Kansas,
 and Fort Hays State University Hays, Kansas where she received her 
Bachelor’s Degree in business.&nbsp; She later returned to earn her 
Master's&nbsp;degree in Special education from Fort Hays State University.

Alice
 was united in marriage to James Tyler on&nbsp;January&nbsp;5, 1973, in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas at the Saint James Saint Phillips Catholic Church.

She
 was a Special Education Elementary Teacher in various communities 
including Montezuma, Kansas, Dodge City, Kansas, in Russell, Kansas at 
the Bickerdyke Elementary School USD #407. She also taught at Lakewood 
middle school in Salina, Kansas

Her
 hobbies included spending time with her family and friends, crafts, 
floral creations, spending time with her pets and reading.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alice
 is survived by her husband James Tyler, San Antonio, TX; daughter, 
Trisa Gonzolas, San Antonio,TX; son, Travis Tyler (Rachel), Poulsbo, WA;
 Kristopher Tyler, San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren, Madeline 
Delling (James), Tyler Gonzolas (Miriam), Nicole Gonzolas, Elijah, Noah,
 A.J. and Shawn Tyler; two great grandchildren, Carter and Amelia 
Delling; several nieces and nephews.

Alice Marie Tyler

Sandra R. “Sandy” Sanders, 68, Hays, died Friday, March 3, 2023, at Rooks County Health Center.

She was born November 11, 1954, in Hays,
 Kansas, the daughter of Roman C. “Roy” and Ruth (Kronewitter) 
Zimmerman.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sandy attended Marian High School, graduating in 1972.&nbsp;&nbsp;On 
November 11, 1972, she was united in marriage to James “Jim” Werth.&nbsp;&nbsp;He 
preceded her in death in 1976.&nbsp;&nbsp;On August 9, 1979, she was united in 
marriage to Paul Sanders, and they later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;For many years, she 
worked as a receptionist for Eagle Communications.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sandy was a member 
of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, prayed the rosary every 
morning, baked delicious cookies for her family, and adored her 
grandchildren.

Survivors include her mother, Ruth 
Zimmerman of Hays, a son, James Werth, Jr. of Hays, four daughters, Amy 
Hudson and husband Caleb of Ellis, Lori Hearne and husband Travis of 
Bucklin, Sara Sanders of Olathe, and Heather Yates and husband John of 
Fort Riley, a brother, Keith Zimmerman and wife Anne of Hays, three 
sisters, Sheila Kelsay and husband Larry of Wichita, Karen Kisner and 
husband Dale of Hays, and Kay Werth and husband Loran of Hays, eleven 
grandchildren, Luke Lohrmeyer and wife Kayli, Eli and Noah Lohrmeyer, 
Hunter and Gunnar Hearne, Laine, Emerson, and Hadleigh Werth, Emily 
Siercks, Tye and Phoebe Yates, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and first husband Jim.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
 Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Private family inurnment 
will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will receive friends from 
5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday,
 all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;A vigil service and rosary 
will be at 6:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

preceded her in death in 1976.&nbsp;&nbsp;On August 9, 1979, she was united in 
marriage to Paul Sanders, and they later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;For many years, she 
worked as a receptionist for Eagle Communications.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sandy was a member 
of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, prayed the rosary every 
morning, baked delicious cookies for her family, and adored her 
grandchildren.Survivors include her mother, Ruth 
Zimmerman of Hays, a son, James Werth, Jr. of Hays, four daughters, Amy 
Hudson and husband Caleb of Ellis, Lori Hearne and husband Travis of 
Bucklin, Sara Sanders of Olathe, and Heather Yates and husband John of 
Fort Riley, a brother, Keith Zimmerman and wife Anne of Hays, three 
sisters, Sheila Kelsay and husband Larry of Wichita, Karen Kisner and 
husband Dale of Hays, and Kay Werth and husband Loran of Hays, eleven 
grandchildren, Luke Lohrmeyer and wife Kayli, Eli and Noah Lohrmeyer, 
Hunter and Gunnar Hearne, Laine, Emerson, and Hadleigh Werth, Emily 
Siercks, Tye and Phoebe Yates, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her father and first husband Jim.&nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
 Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Private family inurnment 
will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will receive friends from 
5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday,
 all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;A vigil service and rosary

She graduated from Grainfield High School. She married Philip Stephen Zerr on September 4, 1961. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Amalia Dinkel; siblings, Joe, Alvin, Benny, Rudy, Wilma, Adolph, Mildred and followed in death by her brother, Donald. Joan is survived by her husband, Philip; son, Terry (Stephanie) Zerr of Gardner, KS; daughters, Michele Beilman of Wichita, KS and Kristy (Martin) Unrein of Southaven, MS; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and sister Betty (Ray) Gagnon. Dustin Dean Poche’, 44, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in the quiet peace of his home.

Dustin was born March 31, 1978, in Russell.&nbsp; He was one of two sons born to David Humphrey and Nancy Marie (Dole) Poche’.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell, Kansas and Gramercy, Louisiana and graduated from Russell High School in 1997.&nbsp; He then attended the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver receiving his BFA. Outside of Russell, Kansas, Dustin lived in Gramercy, Louisiana, New York City, New York, and Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; Dustin and lifelong partner, Matthew Driscoll, lived together until Matt’s passing on October 17, 2020.

Dustin, a globally recognized sculptor, attracted to unconventional beauty, classic glamour and humor specialized&nbsp; in whimsical character-based work, antique doll restoration, and his widely known ornaments of witches continued working until his last moments. Much of his work was built upon his experience as a drag artist, costume designer and his formative years as a window dresser in New York City at a prominent and internationally renowned department store, Jeffrey New York. Above all, he considered his mother, Nancy, his muse and lifelong inspiration.
