Russell William Pennington, 98, a longtime resident of Graham County,
 died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, in Broomfield, Colorado. Russell was born 
on Jan. 6, 1925, in Salina, Kansas, to Russell and Mary (McCain) 
Pennington. The Penningtons operated the Buchanan general store which 
was located 12 miles north of Bogue. Russell’s family lived on the 
second floor of the store and raised wheat and cattle on their nearby 
farm.

Russell graduated from the one-room Buchanan country school 
which was located less than a mile from the store. He then attended and 
graduated from Hill City High School. Russell never claimed to be an 
athlete, but he also never tired of telling folks he played tight end on
 the only undefeated football team in Hill City’s history. In 1943 the 
team was untied and scored on just once.

Shortly after graduating 
from high school, Russell volunteered for the United States Navy and 
served on the USS St. Paul in the South Pacific. He attended the War 
College of the Pacific near Pearl Harbor and was later stationed on the 
island of Saipan.

After returning home from the navy Russell 
attended and graduated from Fort Hays State. He majored in chemistry 
earning his teaching certificate, was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon 
fraternity and was a Prince of the Reveille Ball in 1948. Throughout his
 life Russell loved music and enjoyed dancing. While in college, this 
led to him meeting the love of his life – Mary Lou Fellers of Hays. They
 were married on Aug. 9, 1949, in the First United Methodist Church of 
Hays.

The following year, Russell and Mary Lou moved to Rozel, 
Kansas, where he was principal of the grade school and taught seventh 
and eighth grades as well as high school biology. Mary Lou taught high 
school English and literature.

After teaching three years in 
Rozel, Russell and Mary Lou moved to the Pennington family farm north of
 Bogue so he could share the increasing workload with his brother, 
Walter. Here, Russell and Mary Lou began a family: Russell Mark was born
 in 1954 and William Dane was born in 1956. The young family lived on 
the farm for five years and then moved to Bogue in the spring of 1958. 
In 1960 they built their “forever” home in Bogue in which they lived for
 nearly 60 years.

Russell taught for three years at 
Bogue High School and then became a rural mail carrier serving first out
 of Bogue and later out of Clayton. He carried the mail for more than 20
 years, while, at the same time, helping farm and raise cattle on the 
family land with his brother. Russell worked hard during these years, up
 before dawn to carry the mail and farming in the afternoon and evening 
till dark, like Kansas farmers do. During this time he also served three
 years as a state officer for the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers 
Association.

Russell was a member of the Bogue United Methodist 
Church and served on many church boards. He served on the board of 
directors for both the Graham County Hospital and the Graham County Fair
 &amp; Rodeo. He was scoutmaster for Bogue Boy Scout Troop 183 for many 
years while his sons were scouts. For years he managed a swing dance 
club which provided big band music to his generation and drew dancers 
from nearby communities in NW Kansas.

In 2019, Russell and Mary Lou
 left their beloved home and moved to an assisted living facility in 
Broomfield, Colorado, to be near family as they aged. During this time 
Russell longed for home and never missed a beat in attributing his 
declining health not to his advancing age but to the move from Kansas.

Survivors
 include Russell’s wife, Mary Lou, of Broomfield, Colorado; Mark and his
 wife, Josie, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Dane and his wife, Sandy, of 
Superior, Colorado, and their three sons: Grant; Tyler and wife, 
Brittany; and Connor and wife, Rachael, who are expecting Russell’s and 
Mary Lou’s first great-grandchild in May. All three grandsons live in 
the Denver area.

Preceding Russell in death were his parents, 
Russell and Mary; his baby brother, Donald; his sister, Lucielle, and 
husband, Tom Triplett; and his brother, Walter, and wife, Eleanor 
(Steward).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 
March 4, at the Bogue United Methodist Church with Pastor Julie Truhlar 
officiating. The public is invited for a final viewing at 9:30 a.m. at 
the church prior to the service.

Burial will be at the Wildhorse

Pamela "Pam" Yvette Bracy, 69, passed away 
peacefully February 20, 2023. She was born on August 14, 1953, in 
Woodston, Kansas, to Warren and Janeva Jones, who both preceded her 
death.

Pam was the oldest of four siblings, which undoubtedly led to her 
hard-working, nurturing, and selfless personality. She was rarely still,
 and spent her life making sure that those around her were happy and 
taken care of.

In 2016, Pam retired from the Internal Revenue Service where she spent
 her entire career. Being the first one in her family to attend college 
and earn a degree, she was very proud of the accomplishments that she 
had made, but at the same time humble enough to never broadcast them.

Pam’s passion for life was infectious. She had a quick wit and a 
great sense of humor that always put people at ease and made friends 
everywhere she went. She loved spending time with her family and friends
 and was always up for a game of pool or a shopping trip.

Pam will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kindness and 
generosity touched the lives of many. Pam is survived by her daughter 
Danica Bracy, and siblings Tammy Jones, Jerry Jones and Fred Jones.

Raymond C. Cutler, 83, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 25th, 2023.

Raymond was born in Medford, Massachusetts on July 4, 1939, the son of Phyllis Fannie (Hill) and Walter Chester Cutler.

He retired from Grainbelt Supply where he was a machine operator. He also worked at Tony's, Exide and Napa Auto Parts.

On July 9th, 1961, Raymond married Patricia Mead in Salina.

Survivors
 include his wife, Patricia, of the home; son, Terry Cutler, of Hays, 
Kansas; three daughters, Dawn Cramer (Troy), of Salina, Josie Ramon, of 
Salina, Cassie Ramon, of Salina; grandsons, Traylor Cramer, Trevor 
Cramer, Jacob Cramer, and Javier Ramon.

Raymond is also
 survived by two sisters, Virginia Woods (Richard), of Haines, Florida; 
Marilyn Haverty, of Haynes, Florida; two brothers, Robert Cutler, of Los
 Cruz, New Mexico and Russell Cutler (Shun Thu), of Bradenton, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Cutler; sister-in-law, Mary Cutler.

A
 Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 4th, at 
Carlson - Geisendorf Funeral Home &amp; Crematory in Salina, Kansas.

Ronald Eugene Rohr, 80, died Friday, February 24, 2023, at the 
University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born 
August 23, 1942, in Ness City, Kansas, the son of Fred “Tony” and Helen 
(Stecklein) Rohr. 
 Ronald grew up and lived with his family in Ness City till the age 
of twelve when they moved to Great Bend, Kansas. He served in the 
United States Navy from 1949 to 1953. After the service, Ronald worked 
at CKMC as a boiler room operator. He later worked at the Larned State 
Hospital as a supervisor of the plumbing department until his 
retirement. Ron was a member of the Price of Peace Catholic Church in 
Great Bend and enjoyed his time woodworking and fixing things. 
 In 1974, he married Patricia Ann Rupp Hembree in Ness City, Kansas.
 She survives. Other survivors include two sons Frank &amp; wife 
Shawnda Hembree of Holcomb, Kansas and Bill &amp; wife Jodi Hembree of 
Newalla, Oklahoma; five grandchildren Rachelle, Samantha, Billy, Tommy, 
&amp; Brice; five great-grandchildren; a brother George Rohr of Mountain
 Home, Arkansas; three nieces; and one nephew. Ron is preceded in death
 by his parents and a son Mitchell Rohr. 
 A Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass to follow at

Cynthia L. “Cindy” Thayer, 59, Hays, died Friday, February 24, 2023, at KU Medical Center.

She was born August 30, 1963, in 
Wichita, the daughter of James and Betty (Byrns) Wilder.&nbsp; Cindy 
graduated from Hays High School and studied sociology and psychology in 
college.&nbsp; On January 30, 1982, she was united in marriage to James “Jim” 
Thayer in Hays, and they celebrated 39 years of marriage before he 
preceded her in death on March 22, 2021.&nbsp; 

Cindy was kind-hearted, 
generously helped others, and used her caring nature in her work as a 
disability advocate.&nbsp; She and her husband owned and operated Economy 
Cab.&nbsp; Cindy loved cats, was very involved in her children’s lives and 
activities, and adored her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Phillip 
Thayer and partner Nathan Davis, daughter, Heather Thayer and husband 
Kirk Werth, two grandchildren, Kassii and Chase Werth, all of Hays, and 
two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

To celebrate and remember the lives of 
Cindy and Jim, their family will receive friends on Friday, March 10, 
2023, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Dorothy Martha Balluch passed away on Sunday February 26, 2023, at home in Manhattan, Kansas.  She was 91 years old.

Dorothy was born on March 27, 1931, to John and Barbara (Graf) Spies in Quinter, Kansas.

Dorothy
 graduated from Quinter High School in 1949, and later graduated from 
the Salina Beauty Academy.  Owner/operator of Dorothy’s Beauty Shop in 
Quinter, she was an important part of the community for many years.  In 
1973, she moved to Lincoln, KS and a few years later to Ellsworth, KS to 
follow her job manufacturing telephone wires with Essex Group.  She 
lived over 40 years in Ellsworth, spending her final 3 months living 
with her son, Eddie, in Manhattan, KS.

On August 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Eddie Balluch.

To
 this union they had 2 daughters and 4 sons.  Sue Ellen (Richard) 
Goates, Eugene, Eddie, Donald (Rose), Donna (Chuck) DuFault and Chris 
(Ila).

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband 
Eddie Balluch, her parents John and Barbara Spies, brother John Spies, 
daughter Sue Ellen and son Chris.

Dorothy is survived 
by her brother Harold, children, Gene, Eddie, Donald and Donna and 19 
grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Over the 
years Dorothy was an avid softball player, bowler, and busy mother 
following the many activities of her six children.  Later in life she 
stayed busy stitching away on numerous quilts.  She loved to mow.  Many a
 lawn mower were worn out maintaining her large yard at less than 3 
inches tall, throughout the growing season.

Memorial 
services will be held on Saturday March 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the 
Ashland Community Church, 2901 W 32nd Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.  A 
luncheon will follow the service.  Burial will be at a later date in the
 Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter, KS.

Georgia Fregon, 75, died on Monday, February 27, 2023, at The Ranch House
 in Garden City. She was born on April 22, 1947, at Longmont, Colorado,&nbsp; the daughter of Fred &amp; Pearl (Basta) Sadie. She married Mike Fregon
 on September 15, 2002, at Garden City. 
Georgia grew up in Richmond, California, and attended Compton High 
School. She attended Beauty College at Richmond, California, and 
finished at Faribault, Minnesota. She moved to Garden City in 1980 and 
was a Beautician at various salons and had owned the Classic Cut Salon. 
 She was a member of Bible Christian Church in Garden City. She enjoyed
 country and Christian music but mostly be the role model and protector 
of any children she came in contact with. 
She is survived by her Husband- Mike Fregon, Son- Mike Fisher of Cedar 
Bluff, Daughter- Michelle Martinez of Valley Center, 4 Sisters- Dianne 
Hansard of Altoona, Iowa, Joni Coffield of Beloit, Suzanne Bauernfeind 
of Cottage Grove, Minnesota &amp; Marianne Rupp of Garden City and 5 
Grandchildren- Darrell Fisher, Mason Martinez, Gracie Martinez, Beau 
Martinez &amp; Bella Martinez. She is preceded in death by her Parents.

Phillipsburg resident Lena Davis passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023, peacefully in her home at the age of 94. Lena was born November 19, 1928, in Midland, Arkansas, to her parents Bernardo and Angelina (Zagonel) Bucella. She was married to Dean Davis on March, 9, 1957, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Lena is preceded in death by her husband Dean and parents Bernardo and Angelina. She
 is survived by her daughter Vicky Hewitt and husband Patrick of 
Phillipsburg, granddaughter Desiree Perrel and husband Tim of St. Paul, 
Nebraska, grandsons Cameron Hewitt of Plainville, and Jacee Hewitt of 
Phillipsburg, and three great grandchildren; Ava Hewitt, Austyn Perrel, 
and Ryder Perrel of St. Paul, Nebraska. A funeral service will be 
held at 10:30 on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial 
Chapel. Lena will be laid to rest at the Fairview Cemetery in 
Phillipsburg. Lena will lie in-state on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Services Inc. or the United Methodist Church.

Larry David Newberry, 67, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Sunday November 27, 
2022, at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born March 
28, 1955, in Garden City, Kansas the son of Fred H. Newberry II and Billie
 J. (Cunningham) Newberry. 
Larry grew up in the Garden City area where he attended several schools 
and graduated from Garden City High School. He worked several jobs in 
Garden City. He then went on to Fort Hays State University, after a year
 he met Deanna Jean Libby. Deanna’s roommate at the time invited Larry 
over to fix her tape player. He kept coming over and they convinced her 
to join square dance lessons. That was when Larry found his forever 
square-dancing partner. A year and a half later, they were married on 
June 1, 1985, at the Smith Center Christian Church. 
Larry enjoyed reading, watching movies, shopping, and square-dancing. He
 was stubborn and strong willed and was always up for conversation. 
Coming from a family of seven children, he learned to be heard; you just
 keep talking! 
Survivors include his wife Deanna of the home; siblings Kaylinn (Tommy) 
Stalford of Nicholson, Pennsylvania, Brenda (Alan) Laudick of Lakin, 
Kansas, Fred (Laurie) Newberry III of Hoisington, Kansas, Laura Thomason
 (Luther Smith) of Lakin, Kansas, and Leslie Newberry of Liberal, Kansas,&nbsp; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, one brother Lee Dale 
Newberry and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Randall and Jean Libby. 
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March	11, 2023, at 
the Smith Center Christian Church in Smith Center, Kansas. In lieu of

Margaret Ann Gassmann Bruggeman lived 81 years until her death on the 25th day of February 2023. She was welcomed to life in the family home by her parents Joseph Gassmann and wife Germaine&nbsp;Krutezer&nbsp;Gassmann on the 31st day of July 1941 and they were there to welcome her into eternal life along with her siblings; Conrad Gassmann, Pius Gassmann, Julius Gassmann, Rupert “Bob” Gassmann, Alice (Gassmann) Wagoner, Josephine Gassmann, Agnes (Gassmann)&nbsp;Bollig, Joseph Gassmann, and Henry Gassmann.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A lifelong resident of Kansas, Margaret was a skilled seamstress who enjoyed gardening and cooking. She wore out more than one car as an Avon Lady.&nbsp; She was a dietitian at Decatur County Hospital and spent her&nbsp;latter&nbsp;years working for Wal-Mart in McPherson.&nbsp; Loved by her grandchildren and adored by her great-grandchildren she lived to see the joy on their faces - or rather she lived for the joy they brought to hers.

Margaret is survived by her three children; Dennis and wife Carmen Bruggeman of&nbsp;Assaria, KS, Thomas, and wife Maureen Bruggeman of Selden, KS, and Bernadette and husband Chuck Sanders of Wichita, KS, eight grandchildren; Lacey, Clay,&nbsp;Raeschele, Jarred, Kalinda, Kayla, Chase and Brooke, seven great-grandchildren;&nbsp;Rhieleigh,&nbsp;Braelynne, Charles “Luke," Phoenix, Jaxon, Bonnie, and Vanessa, as well as Margaret’s remaining siblings; Clementine, Delores, and Martin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 6th, 2023, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in&nbsp;Grainfield, with inurnment to follow in&nbsp;Grainfield&nbsp;City Cemetery. Her family will receive friends the evening prior from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the church’s Education Center with a Rosary to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Louis Leroy Roberts

Barbara Martina Howard, age 89, of Oakley, KS passed away Friday, 
February 24, 2023, at Logan County Senior Living, Oakley.&nbsp; She was born 
September 17, 1933, in Quinter, KS to Martin and Matilda (Herman) Rohr.&nbsp;
 She was raised on a farm south of Quinter with her 10 siblings.&nbsp;

Barbara was united in marriage to Kenneth Howard at Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church in a double wedding with her sister, Amelia (Rohr), and 
Delano Schwindt on August 25, 1952. Barbara and Kenneth were married 63 
years before Kenneth’s passing in 2016.

Barbara was known far and wide for her wonderful baked goods. Her 
pies and sticky buns were divine.&nbsp; If she wasn’t baking, she was in her 
garden tending to the most thriving plants.&nbsp; She enjoyed canning her 
garden’s produce and sharing her canned goods with family and friends.

Barbara was the owner and operator of Barb’s Café in Gove, KS for 
many years.&nbsp; During some of these years, she also operated the Café in 
Grainfield, KS. There were many special times spent with her 
Granddaughters helping to run these cafes. In Barbara’s later years, she
 would comment that she wished she could go back to work cooking in a 
café.

When Barbara did have some free time, she loved to go fishing.&nbsp; Her 
ability to catch the biggest fish and then fry it up perfectly was 
amazing.&nbsp; She enjoyed time spent on fishing trips with her Grandson’s 
and their families.&nbsp;

Barbara had amazing talents and work ethic; however, her most 
treasured gift was her family.&nbsp; She loved her husband and her children 
and their accomplishments.&nbsp; She cherished her grandchildren and 
great-grandchildren without measure. There was never a time you couldn’t
 find a drawing or painting from one of her grandkids hung on the wall 
or new school pictures proudly displayed.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her two sons, Ted (Darcy) Howard of 
Oakley and John (Linda) Howard of WaKeeney; a daughter, Colette 
(Richard) Weimer of Englewood, FL; daughter-in-law, Melinda Howard of 
Quinter, KS; fourteen grandchildren, Amy Gibson of Grainfield, Amanda 
(Jerry) Gallentine of Grainfield, JD Draper of Oakley, Ron (Whitney) 
Nieman of Colwich, Denny (Traci) Nieman of Gem, Mindy (Parker) 
Christensen of Rexford, Julie (Warren) Ziegelmeier of Gem, Greg (Ericka)
 Nieman of Edmond, Oklahoma, Johnny (Jessica) Howard of WaKeeney, Jay 
Dee Howard of WaKeeney, Dewey (Amy) Howard of WaKeeney, and Cody Howard 
of WaKeeney, Tracy (Jessica) Buchholz of Ogallah, and Scott Buchholz of 
Englewood, FL; thirty-four great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Rohr; 
sisters, Amelia Schwindt, Elnora Kuehler, Esther Walker, and Martina 
(Paul) Stanton, many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Fred Howard;

Funeral services will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney, 
KS, on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at 10:30 am.&nbsp; Visitation will be held

Barbara Martina Howard

Betty Lou Amos (Stevenson) Payne, 87, went home to be with her Lord and 
Savior Jesus Christ on February 24, 2023. She was born November 5, 1935,
 to Edwin and Louetta Amos in Stilwell, KS. 
On July 30, 1954, Betty married Jack W Stevenson and went on to have 
five children. She remarried on April 1, 1989, to Hanford “Hank” Payne. 
Betty grew up in Independence, MO, and graduated high school with a 
class of 400+ students. She met Jack through his cousin Mae Stevenson. 
They made his parents’ farm south of Oakley their home and raised 
their kids there. Betty enjoyed working in retail clothing. In her 
younger years, she worked at Sears in Kansas City. After her youngest 
child started school, she worked at the Silhouette Shoppe in Oakley for 
10 years. In 1982 she moved back to Independence, MO, and worked 
different jobs until marrying Hank. They moved to Cotter, AR, and 
enjoyed their retirement by fishing in the White river just below their 
house. In 2000 they moved back to Blue Springs, MO, to be closer to 
family and Betty took a part-time job at Walmart, working in the 
clothing section, that she enjoyed. In 2013, Betty and Hank moved to 
Oakley to be closer to her family. She so loved seeing and spending 
time with her children and grandchildren. 
Betty enjoyed her farm animals including chickens, cats and dogs of 
which she raised registered German Shepherds. But her most prized 
possessions were always her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. She 
is cherished and loved by her children and will always be remembered as a
 wonderful and amazing mother. 
Betty was predeceased by parents, Edwin and Louetta; husband, Hank; her 
ex-husband, Jack; twin siblings, Laura Clara Perry and Loren Clarence 
Amos. She is survived by sister, Dorothy Carl of Dadeville, MO; 
children, Paula (Phil) Beesley of Gove, KS, Monte (Rita) Stevenson of 
Golden, CO, Lee (Sandra) Stevenson, Longmont, CO, Susan Stevenson of 
Wichita, KS, and Todd (Karen) Stevenson of Oakley, KS; 20 grandchildren 
and 33 great-grandchildren, and many more nephews and nieces.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

 </figure>Betty Lou Amos (Stevenson) Payne, 87, went home to be with her Lord and 
Savior Jesus Christ on February 24, 2023. She was born November 5, 1935,
 to Edwin and Louetta Amos in Stilwell, KS. 
On July 30, 1954, Betty married Jack W Stevenson and went on to have 
five children. She remarried on April 1, 1989, to Hanford “Hank” Payne. 
Betty grew up in Independence, MO, and graduated high school with a 
class of 400+ students. She met Jack through his cousin Mae Stevenson. 
They made his parents’ farm south of Oakley their home and raised 
their kids there. Betty enjoyed working in retail clothing. In her 
younger years, she worked at Sears in Kansas City. After her youngest 
child started school, she worked at the Silhouette Shoppe in Oakley for 
10 years. In 1982 she moved back to Independence, MO, and worked 
different jobs until marrying Hank. They moved to Cotter, AR, and 
enjoyed their retirement by fishing in the White river just below their 
house. In 2000 they moved back to Blue Springs, MO, to be closer to 
family and Betty took a part-time job at Walmart, working in the 
clothing section, that she enjoyed. In 2013, Betty and Hank moved to 
Oakley to be closer to her family. She so loved seeing and spending 
time with her children and grandchildren.

Kelly Colleen Long, 60, died February 24, 2023, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.&nbsp; She was born on August 8, 1962, in Garden City, the daughter of Bob and Margaret (Hurtt) Routh Sr.

Kelly spent her childhood in Garden City, where she attended school.&nbsp; On May 29, 1982, she married Bruce Long in Garden City.&nbsp; The couple made their home first in Sublette and later in Satanta.&nbsp; Kelly owned several businesses, including the Satanta Drive-In and the Pizza Shack.&nbsp; She also was a massage therapist for many years.&nbsp; Kelly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Ed 
Phillips of Satanta; three children, Lisa Wood and husband Justin of 
Meade, Brandon Long and wife Maggie of Alton, and Megan Day and husband 
Zach of Liberal; two step-children, Sumar Rhea of Dodge City and Andy

Kelly Colleen Long

Violet Lorraine (Spiers) Shaw was born on July 15, 1932, in rural 
Decatur County, Kansas, to Frank and Thelma (Clawson) Spiers. She passed 
February 26, 2023, at Decatur Health Systems in Oberlin, Kansas, at the 
age of 90.

Violet was the first of three children in her family. 
She attended District 47 country school in Center Township for eight 
years, and then started at Oberlin City School. She was delighted to go 
as she could learn to read and write. In 1949 she graduated from Decatur
 Community High School at the age of 16.

On August 12, 1950, 
Violet married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Shaw at the Oberlin 
United Methodist Church. Two boys were born to this union, Richard and 
Joel whom they were very proud of.

From an early age, Violet’s 
passion to read led her to become a teacher and librarian. In 1961 at 
the age of 28, Violet started her college career at Fort Hays State 
University. She graduated in 1964 with an A.B. Major English Graduate 
work in Library Science at Colorado State University, Kansas University,
 and earned Media Specialist at Fort Hays State University. She began 
her teaching career at Norcatur High School, then Decatur Community High
 School, McCook, NE High School, Widefield High School in Colorado, and 
finally back to Decatur Community High School. Her biggest challenge was
 to transfer the DCHS library from card catalog onto the complex 
computer entry system. Violet can be recognized for many other 
achievements as well, including having several articles published, in 
Farm Journal, one in The Good Old Days, and another in School Library 
Journal.

After retiring in 1995, Violet enjoyed growing big 
vegetable gardens, and canning and freezing their bountiful harvest.  
Violet especially enjoyed growing different varieties of roses. Her 
greatest love was to cook and bake for her family and friends, as there 
was always a spread of wonderful food.  You could always count on Violet
 to say, “there is plenty, please go back for more!”

Violet was a 
member of the United Methodist Church, served as President of UWM for 
four years, and coordinated funeral dinners at the church for several 
years. Violet’s greatest legacy was that of her faith in Christ, and the
 Lord helped her to instill this same faith not only in her children, 
but also her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Violet is 
survived by son and wife, Joel and Tami Shaw; daughter-in-law Anna Shaw;
 grandsons, Zach Shaw and Dante Robertson and wife Jasmine; 
granddaughter, Jennifer and husband Casey Harshman; and three great 
grandchildren, Isaac, Henry and Annabella Harshman; one sister, Joan 
Grafel; one brother and wife, Ben and Leone Spiers.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph Shaw; son Richard Shaw; grandson Isaac Shaw.

Funeral
 services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 10:30AM at the 
Oberlin United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oberlin Cemetery.

Bonnie J. Mathes

Alice Jeanette Deines, 83, passed away on February 24, 2023, at 
Brookdale Assisted Living, Brighton, Colo. She was born on December 21, 
1939, in Newark, Ohio, to Carl and Victoria (Grove) Clark. On February 
15, 1969, she married Herman Franklin Deines II in Galatia, Kansas. He 
passed on November 15, 2006.

A longtime area resident, Alice worked as a women’s apparel 
associate at J.C. Penney for over twenty years. She was a member of St. 
Paul Lutheran Church. In her younger years, she participated in roller 
skating competitions – a fact of which she gladly shared with family and
 friends.

Survivors include two sons, Frank (Shannon) Deines, III of Great 
Bend, Kan., and Derek (Rachel) Deines of Firestone, Colo.; three 
daughters, Kym Moore of Zanesville, Ohio, Sheryl Stickler of Great Bend,
 Kan., Tammy (Terry) DiManna of Brighton, Colo.; twelve grandchildren, 
Travis Ryan, Julian and Austin Moore, Jordan and Jakob Stickler, Lexi, 
Kaden and Jace Deines, Harley and Paisley Deines, Nicholas and Dominique
 DiManna; three great grandchildren; four half-brothers, Terry, David, 
Randall and Steve Clark; and a half sister, Becky Martin. She is 
preceded in death by her husband; a son, Scott Edward Deines; her 
parents; stepfather, Julius Barnes; stepmother, Betty Wagner; and 
half-brother, Dave Clark.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 
2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with the family receiving guests from 5:00 
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, 
March 3, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Rhonda Temple, S.A.M, 
presiding. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Galatia, KS.

Peggy Arlene Beckham Strahm was born on March 20th, 1937, to Herman 
Dock Beckham and Hattie Lera Sloan Beckham on their family farm in 
Manor,Texas and died on Friday, February 24th, 2023, at the Osborne County 
Memorial Hospital.

Being the youngest of four children
 she loved the responsibilities she shared with her siblings when it 
came to tending the cotton fields, milking the cows, and caring for 
their huge garden.  Peggy graduated from Pflugerville High School May of
 1955 and went on to attend Nixon Clay Business School.  She worked for 
the controllers office for one year.  Peggy decided that joining the 
Army was a good fit for her and served 18 months at Fort McClellan, 
Alabama, and Fort Hood, Texas, where she met and married her husband Marvin
 Strahm.  After they were both discharged from the Army, they went to 
Marvin’s home in Sabetha, Kansas, and started farming.  Their three 
children Tamera Kay, Kevin Ray, and Curtis James were all born in 
Sabetha, Kansas.&nbsp;

Peggy worked for the Sabetha Hospital
 up until they moved in 1971 to Osborne, Kansas, where her husband Marvin
 became the Farm Bureau Agent for Osborne County.  While living in 
Osborne, she was employed by the Osborne County Memorial Hospital and the
 Coast to Coast Store.  In the Fall of 1980, they made the move back to 
Sabetha, Kansas, and she remained there till May of 2007.  Wanting to be 
closer to her daughter and Family after her husband Marvin passed away 
in 2005 she made the move back to Osborne, Kansas.  Peggy enjoyed being a
 hospice volunteer in Sabetha and Osborne as she was a blessing to many 
she cared for.&nbsp;

Peggy had three special ladies she 
cared for in their homes from Osborne and Downs, Kansas which brought 
her great joy.  Many trips were made to Texas and California to be with 
her sisters and brother and she truly cherished those visits.  Peggy had
 many friends who she enjoyed playing cards with, eating out, attending 
different events in the area and working at the local thrift shop 
“Market Place."&nbsp; Peggy’s faith and belief in Jesus Christ was very 
important to her.  Marvin and her were members of the Apostolic Church 
of Sabetha, Kansas where they were both baptized and gave their 
testimony of faith.&nbsp;

Peggy enjoyed attending the Grace 
Brethren Church in Portis, Kansas where she met many new friends and 
partners of faith.  Grandchildren and great grandchildren were 
definitely a great joy for her and comfort.  Peggy had a gift of 
kindness and compassion in which she showed in her family and friends.  
Peggy often stated she was lucky to have a family she treasured and 
loved, generous friends, and a savior.&nbsp;

Peggy was 
preceded in death by her husband Marvin, her son Kevin, parents Herman 
and Hattie, brother Clyde, sisters Bertie Ruth and Billie, and great 
granddaughter Madison Spears.&nbsp;

Survivors include 
daughter Tammy and husband Doug Spears of Osborne, and her son Curtis 
and wife Claudia of Kansas City, Missouri.  Grandchildren Alisha and 
husband Jeff Schwinn of Topeka, Kansas, Jessica and husband David 
Hindman of Phillipsburg, Kansas, Devin and wife Mercedes Spears, of 
Osborne, Joshua Strahm of Los Angeles, California and Nicole Strahm of 
Kansas City, Missouri.  Great grandchildren Brody, Brixton, Brynlee, 
Ella, Emry, Maclin, Griffin, Abigail, Emma, Harper, and Maverick.

important to her. Marvin and her were members of the Apostolic Church 
of Sabetha, Kansas where they were both baptized and gave their 
testimony of faith.&nbsp;Peggy enjoyed attending the Grace 
Brethren Church in Portis, Kansas where she met many new friends and 
partners of faith. Grandchildren and great grandchildren were 
definitely a great joy for her and comfort. Peggy had a gift of 
kindness and compassion in which she showed in her family and friends. 
Peggy often stated she was lucky to have a family she treasured and 
loved, generous friends, and a savior.&nbsp;Peggy was 
preceded in death by her husband Marvin, her son Kevin, parents Herman 
and Hattie, brother Clyde, sisters Bertie Ruth and Billie, and great 
granddaughter Madison Spears.&nbsp;Survivors include 
daughter Tammy and husband Doug Spears of Osborne, and her son Curtis 
and wife Claudia of Kansas City, Missouri. Grandchildren Alisha and

Verda Louise (Carper) Franklin of Smith Center passed into the loving
 arms of her Savior on February 25, 2023.  She was born March 25, 1931,&nbsp; to God fearing parents, Edward Paul and Esther (Noble) Carper on their 
farm north of Lebanon, Kansas.  She was the seventh of eight children so
 learned early the value of family relationships and hard work.  Verda 
attended Red Country grade school and graduated from Lebanon High School
 in 1949. 

 On September 4, 1949, she married James Franklin.  To this 
union, four children were born: Ken, Dale, Shirley, and Judy.  Verda was
 a farm wife and homemaker.  Her hobbies included Bible study, sewing, 
quilting, embroidery, reading, and more Bible study.

She was 
preceded in death by husband Jim in 2008, siblings and their spouses 
Gerald (Elsie) Carper, Edna (Ernie) Kattenberg, Don (Lorene) Carper, 
Delbert (Lois) Carper, Mary (Wayne) Kiefer, Ivan (Norma) Carper, 
brother-in-law Bill Frankin, and sister-in-laws Shirley Carper and Joan 
McElfresh. 

 She is survived by children Ken (Sondra) Franklin, Dale 
(Kathy) Franklin, Shirley (Randy) Merritt, and Judy (Daniel) Deaver. 
Also surviving are eleven grandchildren: Laci (Ben) Schrant, Erik 
(fiancé, Kathy Vrbas) Franklin, Tiffany (Ryan) Rietzke, John (Jennie) 
Franklin, Clint (Sara) Merritt, Jennifer (Brent) Karnatz, April (Eric) 
Kientz, Kelsey (Jeremy) Myers, Danielle (Jeremy) Casey, Drew Deaver and 
Alex Deaver; 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.

Nola Jean Gross, 89, passed away February 23, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born August 21, 1933, in La Crosse, the daughter of Leslie A. and Clara Elmore Deighton Sr.

A lifetime area resident, she was a bank teller at First State Bank 
in Larned. She was a member of First Christian Church, First Christian 
Women, VFW Auxiliary, Ladies Golf, and Ladies Bowling Association, all 
of Larned.

On June 15, 1952, she married William L. “Bill” Gross at Larned; he preceded her in death on August 23, 2018.

Survivors include: son, Steven (Brenda) Gross, Larned; son-in-law, 
Jerel Hagerman, Yucca Valley, California; seven grandchildren and 
twenty-one great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; daughter, Cindy 
Hagerman; four brothers, Robert Deighton, Jim Deighton, Ned Deighton, 
Leslie Deighton Jr.; and four sisters, Juanita Skelton, Della Skelton, 
Elaine Bantz, and LaDayne Burger.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at 
Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding.

Nathan Carl Emmons, age 44,&nbsp;of Colby, Kansas, passed away&nbsp;on&nbsp;Friday, February 24, 2023,&nbsp;at &nbsp;Hays Medical Center after an extended illness.&nbsp;Nathan was born September 1, 1978, in Colby, Kansas, the son of Joseph W. Emmons and Marsha&nbsp;(Den)&nbsp;Berens.

He grew up in Colby,&nbsp;Lawrence, and Wasilla, Alaska.&nbsp;He graduated in 1997 from Colony High School in Wasilla, Alaska.&nbsp;

Nathan loved to travel, meet people, and explore new foods and taste sensations.&nbsp;He was quick to make friends, family, and even strangers laugh.&nbsp;Nathan enjoyed watching college and professional sports.&nbsp;He also loved movies of all kinds, but especially science-fiction, noir, and horror.&nbsp;Nathan was not afraid of hard work, and worked mainly in maintenance, construction, and landscaping.

Nathan is survived by his mother, Marsha Berens, Colby, KS;&nbsp;his&nbsp;father and stepmother, Joseph and Trish Emmons, Taos, NM;&nbsp;his&nbsp;stepsister,&nbsp;Erin Shaw (Jason), Decorah, IA; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.&nbsp;

Nathan was predeceased by his grandparents;&nbsp;Perry and Esther Emmons; and Ralph and Helen Den;his brother, Justin;&nbsp;and stepfather,&nbsp;Gary Berens.

Brian Lee Garza, 43, of Hutchinson, died February 23, 2023, as a 
result of a traffic accident near Haven. He was born March 31, 1979, in 
Satanta, to Caroline Garza.

Brian graduated from Hugoton High School in 1998 and attended HVAC 
trade school. He was a technician at Cheney Door Company. Brian loved 
being outdoors, going to the lake, and taking photos of sunsets, stars, 
and nature. He also enjoyed fixing things and doing home repairs, 
playing scratch tickets, and making people laugh. Above all, Brian loved
 spending time with his children.

He is survived by: his children, Trey Fink of Lawrence and Chloe 
Robinson of Garden City; mother, Caroline Garza of Hutchinson; 
companion, Cheyenne Gates of Hutchinson; and many extended family 
members.

Brian was preceded in death by: his brother, Marcos Garza; 
grandparents, Jose and Lidia Garza; uncles, Jose L. Garza, Carlos Garza,
 Elias Garza; and aunt, Shirley Hernandez.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Brian’s life will be held
 at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Riverside Baptist Church, 1100

Brian Lee Garza

Glenn Allen Miller, 92, passed away February 24, 2023, at Keepsake 
Kottage in Wichita. He was born July 7, 1930, in Great Bend, to Clarence
 M. &amp; Alverta J. (Gaunt) Miller. Glenn graduated from Great Bend 
High School in 1948. After graduation and turning 18, he enlisted in the
 United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. His military 
service was later celebrated when he participated in an Honors Flight to
 Washington, D.C. After his honorable discharge in 1952, he returned to 
Great Bend and continued his career at Miller Printers as printer until 
his retirement.

He married Patricia Ann Ratliff of Larned, Kansas, on August 23, 
1951, when they eloped to Clayton, New Mexico. They were married for 58 
years until her death on December 31, 2009.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, having recently moved to Wichita, 
Glenn was a member of the Christian faith, American Legion, Kiwanis Club
 and past member of the V.F.W. Post #3111 and the Great Bend Cemetery 
Board. Glenn greatly enjoyed time spent with friends and family and took
 great pride in having a pristine lawn.

Survivors include, his son, Scott Miller of Harrison, Ark.; his 
daughter, Julie Straub and husband Larry of Andover, Kansas; four 
grandchildren, Christopher Hagler and wife Tracy of Kansas City, Mo., 
Vanessa Jeroue of St. George, Utah, Hillary Straub of Durham, North 
Carolina and Brantley Straub of Wichita, Kansas; seven 
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his brother, 
Richard Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, 
Patricia Miller; a daughter, Valerie Miller; two brothers, Carlos Miller
 and Merle Miller; and a sister, Rena Mae Miller.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, 
2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 
to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March
