Connie Christine Wharton, 71, of Clay Center, passed away Monday, April 17, 2023, at her residence.

She was born on November 4, 1951, in La Crosse the daughter of Harold Dean and Mary Jane (Johnson) Dalton.

On June 6, 1971, in Bison, she married Lyle Douglas Wharton.&nbsp; He survives of the home.

Connie worked as a bookkeeper in accounting for department and 
hardware stores.&nbsp; She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Clay 
Center and Job’s Daughters International.&nbsp; She was an avid sewer and 
reader and enjoyed traveling.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her 
grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Staci 
Smith of Houston, Texas and Stephanie Lagerman and husband Todd of 
Riley; two grandchildren, Lily and Logan Lagerman of Riley; two 
brothers, Jerry Dalton and wife Rhonda of Wichita and Robert Dalton and 
wife Mary of Bison, and one sister, Lonnie Call of Arlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Terry Dalton and Jimmy Dalton, and one sister, Norma Giesick.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2023,&nbsp; at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson 
officiating.

Memorials may be made to HIKE (Hearing Improvement Kids Endowment 
Fund) and St. Jude Children's Hospital.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in 
care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Judy Lynn Morgan, 77, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Judy was born November 3, 1945, in Ellsworth, Kansas, the daughter of
 Everett and Alice (Galliart) Steinle.&nbsp; She was a resident of Rush 
County, Kansas, for 50-plus years.&nbsp; She was a 1963 graduate of Dighton High 
School, Dighton, Kansas, and graduated from Cosmetology School in Hays, 
Kansas, as a cosmetologist.

Judy owned and operated House of Beauty Salon, La Crosse, Kansas, for
 more than 50 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and
 a former member of the Lions Club, both of La Crosse, Kansas.

Judy loved attending as many of her grandchildren’s sporting events 
as she could.&nbsp; She had a passion for bowling, and enjoyed participating 
in the church bible study group.

She married Lonnie Morgan. To this union, two sons were born, Steven and Heath.&nbsp; Judy and Lonnie later divorced.

Survivors include:&nbsp; two sons, Steven Morgan (Jolene), La Crosse, 
Kansas, Heath Morgan (Michelle), La Crosse, Kansas; three grandchildren,
 Taylor Morgan (Zach Stejskal), Hunter Morgan, and Madison Morgan; two 
brothers, Jay Steinle (Kathy), Bullhead City, Arizona, Kent Borell 
(Carrie), Dighton, Kansas; and one sister, Kay Conrardy, Dodge City, 
Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her father, Everett Steinle; and her mother and step father, Alice and Gene Borell.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 
P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family 
receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Monday, April 24, 2023, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 P.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Monday, April 24, 2023, at 10:00 A.M. at the

Judy Lynn Morgan

Betty Ann Byers, 89, passed away on April 19, 2023, at Azria Health 
Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kan. She was born on June 1, 1933, in Sayre, 
Okla., to Sanders and Wynona (Jackson) Titsworth. On September 11, 1953,
 she married Ray Lee Byers in Clayton, N.M. He passed on April 29, 1998.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Betty worked as a cook, most 
recently, for American Legion Argonne Post 180, previously working for 
Shaney’s, Ralph Wallace and V.F.W. Post #3111. She was of the Christian 
faith and was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and American Legion 
Auxiliary. Betty enjoyed cooking and cake decorating, crafts, silk 
flower arranging and was a voracious reader.&nbsp; She will also be 
remembered for the love she had for her Boxers.

Survivors include a son, Steven (Karma) Byers of Great Bend, Kan.; 
two daughters, Tresa (Ken) Mayfield of Bennington, Kan. and Lee Ann 
Byers (Bert Esfeld) of Great Bend, Kan.; four grandchildren, Ray Byers, 
Jessica (Spencer) Unruh, Charles (Alexandra) Mayfield, Jamie (Bryant) 
Lovin; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janell Fisher of Branson,
 Mo.; and, Sandra Schneweis of Beaver, Kan. She is preceded in death by 
her husband; a grandson, Ryan Byers; her parents; two brothers, W.C. and
 Vernon Titsworth; two sisters, Clara Titsworth and Virgina Fuqua; and a
 half sister, Laquita Borg.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside 
service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at Great Bend
 Cemetery with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding.

Betty Ann Byers

Kathleen Marjorie (Schnider) Gansel passed away April 17, 2023, in 
Hays, Kansas, at the age of 88. She was born at the family home in 
Cottonwood, Idaho, April 4, 1935, to Louis and Magdalene (Sattler) 
Schnider.  Growing up on a farm, she kept busy, along with her seven 
siblings, taking care of cattle, hogs, chickens and the garden.

Kathy
 attended Catholic schools through high school graduating from St. 
Gertrude’s Academy. She earned her teaching degree from Holy Names 
College in Spokane, Washington. While teaching in Spokane, Washington 
she met her love, Frank Solomon Gansel, who was stationed at Fairchild 
Air Force Base. Frank was actually on a date with Kathy’s sister when 
they met; but true love prevailed. They were married August 2, 1958, in 
Cottonwood, Idaho. In August of 1959, the couple moved to Hill City, 
Kansas where they began their family with Steve (1959), followed by Fran
 (1960), Chris (1961), Mary Lou (1963) and David (1964).

Kathy
 taught in the Hill City schools from 1969-1998. A devout Catholic, she 
was an active member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  
She shared her talents as a musician, CCD teacher and parish council 
member. Kathy lived her faith in every aspect of her life. A rosary was 
never far from her at any time. In the summers, you could find the 
family traveling around to Little Britches Rodeos making friends that 
would last a lifetime. Kathy and Buddy were always staples at the 
Jayhawker Rodeo in Graham County, working many hours to support it. 
Music was also a great love of Kathy’s. She played piano in junior and 
senior high school with a local traveling dance band called “The 
Firehouse Five”. Her grandchildren loved to hear her play the piano and 
she taught several of them to play. Kathy and Buddy also loved to dance.

No
 one was a bigger supporter of her children, grandchildren and later, 
great grandchildren. If she couldn’t be at your school concert, sporting
 event, band gig or activity – you would receive numerous phone calls 
wanting to know all about it. This was still happening up until her 
death. While in the hospital in Hays, Dylan had prom. She was not 
content until she saw pictures from that dance.

Kathy
 and Buddy’s house was the perfect haven for coming home. Everyone has 
memories that will last forever. Kathy was a wonderful cook, and food 
was always plentiful. Two generations of children remember riding around
 the complex on four-wheelers, while Grandma sat in a lawn chair and 
sprayed them with the hose. Easter egg scavenger hunts were a treat 
every year with Kathy delighting in sending you inside, outside, and up 
trees to find the bounty. So many little hands spent time helping in the
 garden and sharing in the spoils. This home was shared by many; you 
didn’t have to be related by blood. Many friends shared in the love and 
generosity.&nbsp;Kathy loved to laugh, and April Fool’s was a favorite day. 
Chris and Buddy were often the ones being pranked. One time they rushed 
to a field where horses were said to be out. She also loved to remember 
birthdays and anniversaries and doubtfully there is a person in this 
church who did not receive a phone call on their special day.

She
 was preceded in death by her children: Fran, Mary Lou, David, and 
Joseph Michael; her parents; and her siblings: Harry, Doris and Larry. 


Kathy will be greatly missed by a family who loved her dearly: her 
husband Frank “Buddy” of the home; Two sons, Steve, wife Mary Rose and 
granddaughter Gabrielle of Franklin, Tennessee, and Chris, wife Marcy 
and grandson Dylan of Hill City; two granddaughters, Emily of Austin, 
Texas, and Megan, husband Colton, great grandchildren Jeremiah and Zella
 Rose Walker of Topeka, and grandson Ethan of Glenwood Springs, 
Colorado; son-in-law Bill McCollum of Houston, Texas; grandson Ben, 
fiancé Suziey, great grandchildren Evan and Maxim McCollum of London, 
England; granddaughter Angie McCollum of Portland, Oregon; grandsons, 
Barry, wife Hannah, great grandchildren Cadence, Hutch and Duke of Hill 
City, and Braden McCollum of Fort Collins, Colorado; and granddaughter 
Amary and R.J Ellis of Hill City; siblings: Betty Lou Gilchrist of 
Roseville, California, Marybelle Neary and husband Jake of LaPorte, 
Indiana, and Ronnie Schnider of Cottonwood, Idaho; along with many other
 family members and friends.

Kathleen 'Kathy' Marjorie Gansel

James Dean Brown, 89, of Beeler, Kansas, passed away on April 17, 
2023 at Shawnee Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center, Overland Park, 
Kansas. 

James, known by most as Jim, was born to George Mason and Carrie
 Etta (Smith) Brown on July 14, 1933, on the family farm in Alamota, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Dighton High School&nbsp; and enlisted in the 
Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; He served as a paratrooper and completed 27
 jumps and had many adventures in Greece including a meeting with some 
suspicious farmers with pitchforks during one landing.&nbsp; He liked to 
travel but returned home to help on the farm.&nbsp; He worked on the railroad
 and retired from the Union Pacific as a foreman in&nbsp;1997.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He&nbsp;continued 
to farm, share jokes with friends and family on email, and explore 
herbal cures and natural remedies.&nbsp; He liked to stay abreast of 
technology and built several televisions.&nbsp; He enjoyed keeping up with 
the news on his computer, using Amazon Alexa and good food, particularly
 ice cream.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was a&nbsp;quiet man, practical yet stubbornly optimist, who
 dared to dream impossible dreams. Jim marched to his own drum and 
loved&nbsp; the only way he knew how.&nbsp; He said 90% of success in life was 
just showing up and he made sure that he showed up for his family and 
friends.

Jim said that he was ready to move on to his other dimension and 
looked forward to being reunited with beloved daughter Jamie Dea who 
proceeded him in death in 1978. Jim was also predeceased by his parents,
 George and Carrie, his sisters Vera Whipple, Velma Stramel, Kitty 
Fisher, his brother William Brown and nephews Terry Brown and Dick 
Stramel.&nbsp;

Jim is survived by his daughter, Misty Brown Polo and Matteo 
Polo (Kansas City), son James G. Brown (Hutchinson), his step-daughter 
Lorrie Little (Salina) and step-son Marlin Portenier (Dodge 
City),&nbsp;granddaughters Annagrace and Giulietta and grandsons&nbsp;Damon, Jamon
 and Gianluca and 25 step grand and great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on April 21, 2023, at 
the Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, Kansas followed by burial in 
the Dighton Cemetery, Dighton, Kansas.

loved&nbsp; the only way he knew how.&nbsp; He said 90% of success in life was 
just showing up and he made sure that he showed up for his family and 
friends.Jim said that he was ready to move on to his other dimension and 
looked forward to being reunited with beloved daughter Jamie Dea who 
proceeded him in death in 1978. Jim was also predeceased by his parents,
 George and Carrie, his sisters Vera Whipple, Velma Stramel, Kitty 
Fisher, his brother William Brown and nephews Terry Brown and Dick 
Stramel.&nbsp;Jim is survived by his daughter, Misty Brown Polo and Matteo 
Polo (Kansas City), son James G. Brown (Hutchinson), his step-daughter 
Lorrie Little (Salina) and step-son Marlin Portenier (Dodge 
City),&nbsp;granddaughters Annagrace and Giulietta and grandsons&nbsp;Damon, Jamon
 and Gianluca and 25 step grand and great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on April 21, 2023, at 
the Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, Kansas followed by burial in 
the Dighton Cemetery, Dighton, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, please

James Dean Brown

Lifelong Sherman County resident and beloved mother and friend, Nancy
 Jane Rudy, passed away due to a brief illness on November 19, 2022, at 
St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, CO.

On October 13, 1937, Nancy was born to the union of Carl Hugh 
Errington and Nellie Ball Errington at Boothroy Memorial Hospital in 
Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; Nancy was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s 
Episcopal Church.&nbsp; Life began for Nancy growing up on the Bar E Ranch in
 Sherman County.&nbsp; She attended Ruleton Elementary and graduated from 
Sherman Community High School in 1955.&nbsp; She furthered her education in 
business and accounting at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; After college, 
Nancy attended Hollywood Beauty College in Denver, Colorado, pursuing a 
career in cosmetology.

During her adolescent years, putting aside her usual farm and school 
activities, Nancy was a member of the Harmony Hustlers 4-H Club for 
eleven years.&nbsp; She held club officer positions and received many 
achievement awards at county and state levels.&nbsp; Nancy had an eye for 
selecting a grand champion steer from her father’s Polled Hereford cow 
herd, the most memorable was her steer named Butch.&nbsp; She continued her 
interest in 4-H later, as a leader for the Ruleton Eager Beavers.&nbsp; Nancy
 was also an all-around athlete and learned to play softball at an early
 age.&nbsp; She played throughout high school and played with the Fort Hays 
State girls traveling team where she was also known for throwing a mean 
curve ball.

On January 19, 1963, Nancy was united in marriage to James Devere 
Rudy at the United Methodist Church in Brewster, Kansas.&nbsp; To this union,
 two daughters were born, Tracy Ann and Trina Jo.&nbsp; As a family, they 
enjoyed camping and fishing together.&nbsp; In the spring of 1981, James had 
passed away, leaving Nancy to rear their girls.&nbsp; She dedicated her life 
making sure they had stability, an education and a good work ethic.&nbsp; She
 demonstrated her work ethic throughout her career as a beautician.&nbsp; 
Nancy owned her own businesses in Atwood, Colby and Goodland, KS.&nbsp; As 
time went on, she worked as a beautician at Golden West Skills Center 
and at Good Samaritan Assisted Living, while she was a CNA.&nbsp; She had 
many other pursuits that included operating The Ole Ice Cream Parlor in 
Goodland and managing her farm until her passing.

Nancy was a member of Zonta International Women’s Club.&nbsp; She was 
listed along with her parents in the National Social Directory from 
1971-1975.&nbsp; Nancy enjoyed living in her home on the family farm.&nbsp; She 
gave to many charities and was always there to help a friend in need.&nbsp; 
She enjoyed traveling with her daughters, spending time with friends, 
keeping up with her granddaughter, and was a sports enthusiast, never 
missing a K-State or KU game.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by her daughters Tracy Rudy of Burlington, CO and 
Trina Rudy of Vancouver, WA, a granddaughter Samantha Jones of 
Burlington, CO and many other family members and friends.

Flora Mae Weigel, 90, passed away on April 17, 2023, at Hays Medical 
Center, Hays, Kan. She was born on July 17, 1932, in Walker, Kan., to 
Anselm “Lefty” Braun and Anna Marie Braun. On July 17, 1954, she married
 Robert Leo Weigel in Walker, Kan. He passed on March 9, 2001.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Flora was a dedicated homemaker.
 She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima, 
Altar Society and helped with the Adoration Chapel. Flora Mae enjoyed 
spending time with her family, especially watching her grandchildren’s 
activities.

Survivors include two sons, Robert “Bob” (Doris) Weigel of Great 
Bend, Kan. and Brian Weigel of Salina, Kan.; two daughters, Pam Hitz and
 Michelle (Eric) Moore, both of Great Bend, Kan.; five grandchildren, 
Tyler (Brooke) Weigel, Jocelyn Weigel (Zac), Jessica Walters, Esten 
Moore and Braylon Moore; and two great-grandchildren, Oren Talukdar and 
Bobby Troughton. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a
 brother, Donald Braun; and two infant sisters, Darlene and Lorine 
Braun.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, 
2023, with Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m., family receiving guests 
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 
a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Church with Father 
Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery in 
Walker, Kan.

Born on November 16, 1929, to Ora E. and Samantha (Bess) McKinley, she 
was the youngest of ten children. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband Marvin Plummer. 
Bonnie is survived by her children, Terry (Mandy) Plummer, Jan Plummer 
Hayek, Susan (David) Plummer Anderson and Marva Plummer-Burns; six 
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and 
nephews. 
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 
College Drive Assembly of God, Colby. The burial will take place in

Russell Duane Crothers, 41, passed away on April 15, 2023, at his 
home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on September 28, 1981, in Canadian,
 Texas, to Duane and Shari (Ferguson) Crothers.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Russell most recently worked in maintenance at Redbarn Pet Products.

Survivors include his father of Great Bend, Kan.; a sister, Natalie 
Espinosa and her husband, Brandon, of St. Charles, Mo.; nephew and 
niece, Ethan and Maya Espinosa; grandmother, Shirley Crothers, of Geary,
 Okla.; and a biological son lovingly placed for adoption. 

He is 
preceded in death by his mother; paternal grandfather; and maternal 
grandparents.

There will be no visitation or services with cremation having taken place.

Carol Marie Beyer passed away April 16, 2023, in Hays, Kansas.

Carol was born May 24, 1941, to Rudolph and Mary (Rohr) Ruder in Hays, Kansas. She married Joseph Beyer on September 4, 1961. Through this union, they had one son and two daughters.

Carol graduated from Girls Catholic High School, was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Carol had a long work history in the grocery business, starting at her parent’s grocery store, Ruder’s Grocery and Meat Lockers, and then at CO Mammels in the meat department. She then worked at St. Anthony Hospital in housekeeping until she retired. After a short illness, Carol moved into Cedarview/Homestead Assisted Living until she passed away.

She loved playing Bingo, board games, and cards with her family and friends, especially when her husband, Joe, was alive. She also enjoyed traveling to the casinos and playing slots. Carol was also a fan of movies, particularly westerns, especially Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. She was also very fond of magazines, particularly ones with food and creative ideas. Carol especially enjoyed dining out with her sister Debbie and visiting her brother Rich and sister-in-law Sharon when they took her to appointments. She also spoke to her brother Kenneth (Jim) by phone often.

Carol was very fond of having her hair and nails done and shopping. Carol loved going to the Volga German weddings and events as she lived in Hays her entire life; she was often joined by her siblings and their spouses, including her brother Gerald and sister-in-law Anita, before they passed away.&nbsp;

Carol spoke to her children very frequently and always looked forward to their visits back to Hays. She was very happy that she was able to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrive before she passed. Carol was happy and loved life.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Cindy) Beyer; daughters Pam (Lance) Jones and Laurie (Dennis) Charbonneau, one brother, Richard (Sharon) Ruder and one sister, Deborah Weber; six grandchildren, Brandon (Alyssa) Charbonneau; Brett (Bri) Charbonneau and great granddaughter Ember; Ryan (Dani) Jones; Kalaya (Bonifacio) Hernandez and great grandson Ezra; Shane Beyer, and Ky Beyer; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Kenneth (Mary Ellen) Ruder, and Gerald (Anita) Ruder.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be determined by family at a later date.

Services will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Keithley Funeral Homes~Brock’s Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, Kansas, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM until time of Service.

Kathleen 'Kathy' Marjory Gansel

Sister Christina Meyer died April 15, 2023, at Nazareth Motherhouse in
 Concordia, KS.&nbsp; She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 
years. &nbsp;

She was born in Quinter, KS on September 8, 1936, to 
Jacob and Theresa Phlieger Meyer, the fifth of ten children, and was 
baptized Christina Marie.&nbsp; 

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph,
 Concordia, KS on February 2, 1952.&nbsp; On August 14, 1952, Christina 
received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name 
Sister Mary Cleopha, later changing back to her baptismal name.&nbsp; She 
pronounced first vows on August 15, 1953 and final vows on September 9, 
1957.

In 1968, S. Christina received her BS from Marymount in 
psychology; followed by a MS in education in 1972 from Kansas State 
University in Manhattan. In 1988 she received a Certificate in Graduate 
Studies in applied theology from Graduate Theological Union and School 
of Applied Theology. &nbsp;She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of 
St. Joseph in Chicago, IL; Silver City, NM; Aurora, IL; Fairbury, NE; 
Gorham, KS; and Gladstone, MI.&nbsp; 

S. Christina served on the 
Executive Council of the Congregation &nbsp;from 1979 to 1987. &nbsp;She served in
 several capacities in parish ministry after leaving the Council. She 
also served in Congregational Ministries as Director of Mission Appeals 
and Co-Coordinator of the CSJ Justice and Peace Center. &nbsp;In May, 2021, 
Sister Christina retired to the Motherhouse.

S. Christina Meyer was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived by five sisters and one brother.

A
 Bible Vigil Service will be held April 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the Nazareth 
Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Marcia Allen as the eulogist.&nbsp; The Mass 
of Christian Burial will be April 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse 
Chapel with Father Barry Brinkman presiding.&nbsp; The burial will be in the 
Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.&nbsp;

Parker Armstrong, 22, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023.&nbsp; He was born in Salina to Jeff and Kim (Montague) Armstrong.

Parker enjoyed robotics starting in high school and continuing with 
classes at Kansas State University, Salina where he was becoming a 
Robotics Engineer. He enjoyed working with his hands and created wood 
working and metal projects, both in and out of class. Dungeons and 
Dragons was a favorite hobby with close friends.&nbsp; He loved all things 
Star Wars, especially "The Mandalorian." He also loved reading, writing 
stories, Greek Mythology, and Magic. Parker was an intellectual and 
loved the challenge of a debate. He was passionate about his thoughts 
and beliefs and had a huge heart. At home Parker liked to cook, creating
 his own recipes, and showing off his grill skills.

He was preceded by his grandparents, James and Paulette Armstrong; 
great-grandmother, Nellie Montague; and uncle, James Bryan&nbsp; (J.B.) 
Armstrong.

Parker is survived by his mother, Kim Armstrong of Salina; father, 
Jeff and Lorelei Armstrong of Hays; brother, Jacob Jones Armstrong of 
Salina; step-siblings, Gavin Gentry of Hays, Cassidy Gentry of Dumas, 
TX, Samuel Leedom of Hays; cousins, Amber and Josh Schindler , Kory and 
Reagan Gomez , Kason Gomez; aunt and uncle, Julie and Mike Gomez of 
Maple Hill; and grandfather, Bob Montague.

Eusebio Levya Hernandez, 56, passed away on April 16, 2023, at Hays 
Medical Center, Hays, Kan. He was born on September 6, 1966, in Los 
Alamos de san Antonio municipio Manuel Benavidez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to 
Rosendo Leyva Hernandez and Antonia Hernandez Lujan. In 1986, he married
 Josefina Madrid Leyva in Mexico.

A Great Bend resident for 26 years coming from Mexico, Eusebio worked
 in the construction industry. He was an extremely loving man and 
enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially with his 
wife.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Christian Leyva of 
Great Bend; two daughters, Melisa (Juan Victor Ramirez) Leyva and 
Julissa Leyva, both of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Yulisa Sanchez, 
Rusbael Sanchez, Jose Manuel Sanchez, and Victor Angel Sanchez; his 
parents; and three brothers, Cosme, Guadalupe, and Bernabe Leyva.

Visitation will take place starting at noon on Tuesday, April 18, 
2023, at Asamblea Apostolica De La Fe En Cristo Jesus, 3920 Forest Ave.,
 Great Bend, Kan. Funeral service will take place at 9:00 a.m. on

Eusebio Levya Hernandez

Gregory Scott Salisbury, age 61 of Bennington, Kan., passed away unexpectedly at his home April 14, 2023.

Greg was born November 8, 1961.He met Melinda when they were 15 
through their church, and they married on July 31, 1982, while attending
 Fort Hays State together. The two made their first home in Hays before moving
 to Salina, Kan.

Greg graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1980 and went
 on to get a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Fort Hays State University.
 In March 1981 while at Fort Hays, he joined the Kansas Army National 
Guard. After graduating Fort Hays in 1985, Greg worked as a game warden 
for the Kansas Wildlife and Parks department in Saline and Ottawa 
counties. In November 2021, Greg retired from the Guard as a Colonel 
after 40 years of service. He then retired from Wildlife and Parks in 
March 2022.

Greg loved teaching Hunter Education and working as the boating 
officer for Wildlife and Parks. He looked forward every year to the 
Smoky Hill River Festival and was a huge Chiefs fan. Throughout Greg’s 
life but especially during his year of retirement, he packed his days 
full of family, friends, and travel. He and Melinda traveled all over 
the world, but he loved being at home, taking morning walks with 
Melinda, working to maintain their property, and sitting outside 
enjoying the view and conversation with Melinda. He loved visiting and 
hosting his grandkids.

Greg is survived by his wife Melinda; his parents Larry and Kay 
Salisbury of Melvern, Kan.; son Brandon (Tamara) Salisbury of Conway 
Springs, Kan.; daughter Meghan (Corey) Redfern of Arma, Kan.; brother 
Randy of Overland Park, Kan.; six grandchildren and a large circle of 
friends.

A visitation will be Sunday, April 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ryan 
Mortuary, Salina, KS. Memorial services will be Monday, April 24, at 10 
a.m. at Bennington Bible Church, Bennington, KS. with a graveside 
service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, Manhattan, KS at 2 p.m. that 
afternoon.

Ray Thomas “Jack” Duncan, 75, of Levant, KS, died Monday, April 17, 
2023, at his home, surrounded by family with much laughter, prayer, and 
love. He was born January 20, 1948, in Hayward, CA, to Floyd and Evelyn 
(Cranston) Duncan. 
Jack was a loving husband married to Marla “Suzi” (Smahlik) Duncan for 
52 years, a proud father for 42 years, and an even prouder grandfather 
for 13 years. He was the finest and most loyal friend anyone could want 
or ask for. 
Jack was a patriot and a fighter and served his country proudly. He was 
the last remaining Special Forces from his group. Like many of his 
generation, he never talked about his service. His job in Vietnam was 
para-rescue, picking up shot-down pilots and crew members. He spent 37 
months in combat, flew over 5,200 hours, lost 9 helicopters, and spent 
28 days as a prisoner of war. 
He received calls and letters from veterans and children of veterans 
over the years of those that he rescued. He didn’t do it for the 
recognition. He did it because it was the right thing to do. 
Jack was a rail-roader and a rancher; a bull rider and a rodeo clown. He
 loved to ride motorcycles and was the best man at his son’s wedding. 
Indeed, he was the Best Man. At the end of the day, his favorite things 
were being close to Suzi, sitting on the porch, watching the cows and 
listening to the birds. 
Jack could relate to all kinds of people. He never met a stranger. He 
could tease and poke fun, but never out of ugliness. The more he teased 
you, the more you knew he loved you. He loved to laugh, especially at 
himself. During one of his last few days, his family was sitting around 
him all teary-eyed, and out of nowhere he said, “Oops.” When asked what 
happened, he said, “I farted.” Even in tough moments, he was always 
joking and knew how to lighten a mood. 
Ray Thomas “Jack” Duncan will be remembered as one of the last real men …
 rugged and stubborn, but also as a gentle giant and loyal friend, with 
his kind words, and a good joke. 
Before he lost the ability to communicate, one of the final things he said was, “Remember, I love you all.” 
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandy King. 
His love will be remembered by his wife Marla “Suzi” Duncan; son Tony 
(Nicole) Duncan; grandsons, Seth and Ethan Duncan and brother Mike 
(Cherie) Duncan. 
Inurnment will take place in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, in WaKeeney, 
KS. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20,
 2023, at the Colby American Legion.

Thomas A. “Tom” Frederking, of Plainville, KS, passed away on April 12, 2023, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. He was born on May 8, 1960, in Ellsworth, KS to Theodore C. and Saundra (McGee) Frederking. He married Lori J. Panzer on October 17, 1981, in Hays, KS. They were blessed with four children: Shawn, Brandon, Katelyn, and Logan.

Tom grew up in&nbsp;Sylvan Grove, KS&nbsp;and graduated from&nbsp;Sylvan&nbsp;Unified&nbsp;High School&nbsp;in 1978. He then went on&nbsp;to Barton County Community&nbsp;College&nbsp;for a year.&nbsp;Tom was an oilfield sales manager for Crawford Supply for&nbsp;the past&nbsp;7&nbsp;years, and before that he worked many years for Harbison-Fischer.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and&nbsp;4th&nbsp;Degree Member of the&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Council 1857.

Tom&nbsp;never met a stranger. To him, everyone was just a friend he hadn’t yet met. He&nbsp;was an avid KU Basketball fan. He enjoyed youth sports through coaching&nbsp;and refereeing, starting when he was 21 years old&nbsp;in&nbsp;1981&nbsp;until 2019. He was head&nbsp;boys’&nbsp;basketball coach for Plainville Cardinals from 2004 through 2008.&nbsp;He also&nbsp;enjoyed playing cards at Ruder Oil&nbsp;and never hesitated to take money from all the guys!&nbsp;He loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.&nbsp;Some of Tom’s favorite&nbsp;times&nbsp;were those&nbsp;spent&nbsp;together&nbsp;at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tom is survived by his wife, Lori of the home in Plainville; children: Shawn Frederking and fiancé Bradi Blanco of Edmond, OK, Brandon Frederking (Kendra) of Bentonville, AR, Katelyn Dunlap (Michael) of Ottawa, KS, and Logan Frederking of Kansas City, MO;&nbsp;siblings: Richard Frederking (Brenda) of Plainville, Dale Frederking of Russellville, AR, Tracy Frederking of Sylvan Grove, KS, and Joanna&nbsp;Donley (Tracy) of Salina, KS; step-mother, Ruby Frederking of Russellville, AR; and three grandchildren: Harper, Henry, and Addison Jo.

He is preceded in death by his parents,&nbsp;Theodore&nbsp;and Saundra Frederking.

Tom was a good-hearted man who worked hard, enjoyed&nbsp;life,&nbsp;and cherished his family and friends. Although he was taken from us far too soon, we know that those we enjoyed and loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. We can smile because he lived and left us with cherished memories that will live forever in our hearts. He will be remembered in love.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.&nbsp;

Thomas A. 'Tom' Frederking

Patrick S. Eastes, 60 years old, of Smith Center Kansas passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on April 16th, 2023.

He was born March 9, 1963, in Pratt, Kansas, to Jack and Dona (Dodson) Eastes.

Patrick dedicated most of his life to the emergency medical care services.

In
 the late '80s, he started as a volunteer fire fighter for Pratt, KS, and
 quickly fell in love with the idea of helping others, he chose to 
expand his education and knowledge by becoming an EMT - RN -and 
PARAMEDIC, he started work for Pratt county EMS, then moved to Halstead 
KS, working for yet another EMS, while branching out working in the ER 
at Saint Francis regional medical center in Wichita. In the early '90s,&nbsp; he became a paramedic.

In other years he worked at Pratt regional Medical Center, Hastings Nebraska hospital and flew with EagleMed.

In
 November of 2000, he made the decision to move to Smith Center, jumping 
on board to become the director of Smith County EMS! Patrick loved the 
community and always said he signed his life to this community, and this
 is where he always wanted to be, helping our county! Smith Center will 
always be our home!

Patrick loved watching his grand 
girls grow up, he will always be on that sideline rooting for Syd no 
matter the sport or event, softball volleyball basketball or gymnastics.

Embree
 is still young, but he loved getting down on the floor and playing with
 her whether it be with a ball, dolls or being served coffee and tea. He
 enjoyed every moment with his grand girls!

Patrick is 
survived by his wife Patricia (Gibson) Eastes; daughter Saisha-spouse 
Jeremy and granddaughter Embree;  Son Ethan-spouse Jess and 
granddaughter Sydney; son Kale (of the home); brothers Zon (Peggy) 
Eastes and Jeff (Lynn) Eastes; Sister Kim-Nephews Wesley nieces Jackie, 
Lindsey, Jack, Brent and Brian.

He will truly be missed by not only his family but by many others.

Evelyn Delores Zimmerman, 88, of Colby, died Saturday, April 15, 2023, 
at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. She was born January 16, 1935, in 
Flagler, CO, to Homer and Marjorie (Clemans) Mundell. Evelyn was raised 
by her grandmother, Frances Adolph, and graduated from Winona High 
School. 

She then married Doyle J. Zimmerman on June 14, 1953, in Colby. 
To this union four children were born. Evelyn was a talented seamstress 
and made the kids clothing. She spent many years as a crossing guard for
 Colby Elementary School. In 1974, Doyle and Evelyn purchased Hi-Plains 
Implement. 

Evelyn went to work as the secretary and enjoyed working 
side-by-side with her husband until their retirement in 1999. In her 
free time, Evelyn enjoyed bowling, gardening, riding motorcycles, 
cooking and cheering on KU Basketball. She also liked fishing and going 
to Trenton Lake. Evelyn had a sharp memory and enjoyed visiting during 
their regular “Saturday Night Friends Night.” 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Doyle; brothers, Cy, 
Don, Jerry, Rich and Walt and grandson Mitchell Zimmerman. 
Evelyn is survived by her children, Deb (Bob) Hedge, of Salina, KS, 
Michael (Lynn) Zimmerman, of Hays, KS, Diana (Tim) Flohrschutz, of 
Union, MO, and Darla (Bruce) Jarmer, of Colby; grandchildren, Miranda 
(Dalton) Marshall, Janessa Hedge, Audrey (Mike) Farmer, Nathan

Mary A. Murray, age 60, passed away on 
Monday, April 17, 2023, in Greeley County, Kansas from a motor vehicle 
accident.&nbsp; She was born on March 26, 1963, in Oberlin, Kansas, the 
daughter of Dale Clinton and Agnes Marie Koerperich Swank.&nbsp; A resident 
of Scott City, Kansas, since 2010 moving from Pence, Kansas, she was a 
Registered Nurse.

She was a member of the Apostolic Church in Garden City, Kansas.

On November 10, 1990, she married Virgil G. Murray in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.
