Kathleen 'Kathy' Marjory Gansel

Sister Christina Meyer died April 15, 2023, at Nazareth Motherhouse in
 Concordia, KS.&nbsp; She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 
years. &nbsp;

She was born in Quinter, KS on September 8, 1936, to 
Jacob and Theresa Phlieger Meyer, the fifth of ten children, and was 
baptized Christina Marie.&nbsp; 

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph,
 Concordia, KS on February 2, 1952.&nbsp; On August 14, 1952, Christina 
received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name 
Sister Mary Cleopha, later changing back to her baptismal name.&nbsp; She 
pronounced first vows on August 15, 1953 and final vows on September 9, 
1957.

In 1968, S. Christina received her BS from Marymount in 
psychology; followed by a MS in education in 1972 from Kansas State 
University in Manhattan. In 1988 she received a Certificate in Graduate 
Studies in applied theology from Graduate Theological Union and School 
of Applied Theology. &nbsp;She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of 
St. Joseph in Chicago, IL; Silver City, NM; Aurora, IL; Fairbury, NE; 
Gorham, KS; and Gladstone, MI.&nbsp; 

S. Christina served on the 
Executive Council of the Congregation &nbsp;from 1979 to 1987. &nbsp;She served in
 several capacities in parish ministry after leaving the Council. She 
also served in Congregational Ministries as Director of Mission Appeals 
and Co-Coordinator of the CSJ Justice and Peace Center. &nbsp;In May, 2021, 
Sister Christina retired to the Motherhouse.

S. Christina Meyer was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived by five sisters and one brother.

A
 Bible Vigil Service will be held April 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the Nazareth 
Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Marcia Allen as the eulogist.&nbsp; The Mass 
of Christian Burial will be April 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse 
Chapel with Father Barry Brinkman presiding.&nbsp; The burial will be in the 
Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.&nbsp;

Parker Armstrong, 22, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023.&nbsp; He was born in Salina to Jeff and Kim (Montague) Armstrong.

Parker enjoyed robotics starting in high school and continuing with 
classes at Kansas State University, Salina where he was becoming a 
Robotics Engineer. He enjoyed working with his hands and created wood 
working and metal projects, both in and out of class. Dungeons and 
Dragons was a favorite hobby with close friends.&nbsp; He loved all things 
Star Wars, especially "The Mandalorian." He also loved reading, writing 
stories, Greek Mythology, and Magic. Parker was an intellectual and 
loved the challenge of a debate. He was passionate about his thoughts 
and beliefs and had a huge heart. At home Parker liked to cook, creating
 his own recipes, and showing off his grill skills.

He was preceded by his grandparents, James and Paulette Armstrong; 
great-grandmother, Nellie Montague; and uncle, James Bryan&nbsp; (J.B.) 
Armstrong.

Parker is survived by his mother, Kim Armstrong of Salina; father, 
Jeff and Lorelei Armstrong of Hays; brother, Jacob Jones Armstrong of 
Salina; step-siblings, Gavin Gentry of Hays, Cassidy Gentry of Dumas, 
TX, Samuel Leedom of Hays; cousins, Amber and Josh Schindler , Kory and 
Reagan Gomez , Kason Gomez; aunt and uncle, Julie and Mike Gomez of 
Maple Hill; and grandfather, Bob Montague.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

Eusebio Levya Hernandez, 56, passed away on April 16, 2023, at Hays 
Medical Center, Hays, Kan. He was born on September 6, 1966, in Los 
Alamos de san Antonio municipio Manuel Benavidez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to 
Rosendo Leyva Hernandez and Antonia Hernandez Lujan. In 1986, he married
 Josefina Madrid Leyva in Mexico.

A Great Bend resident for 26 years coming from Mexico, Eusebio worked
 in the construction industry. He was an extremely loving man and 
enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially with his 
wife.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Christian Leyva of 
Great Bend; two daughters, Melisa (Juan Victor Ramirez) Leyva and 
Julissa Leyva, both of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Yulisa Sanchez, 
Rusbael Sanchez, Jose Manuel Sanchez, and Victor Angel Sanchez; his 
parents; and three brothers, Cosme, Guadalupe, and Bernabe Leyva.

Visitation will take place starting at noon on Tuesday, April 18, 
2023, at Asamblea Apostolica De La Fe En Cristo Jesus, 3920 Forest Ave.,
 Great Bend, Kan. Funeral service will take place at 9:00 a.m. on

Eusebio Levya Hernandez

Gregory Scott Salisbury, age 61 of Bennington, Kan., passed away unexpectedly at his home April 14, 2023.

Greg was born November 8, 1961.He met Melinda when they were 15 
through their church, and they married on July 31, 1982, while attending
 Fort Hays State together. The two made their first home in Hays before moving
 to Salina, Kan.

Greg graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1980 and went
 on to get a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Fort Hays State University.
 In March 1981 while at Fort Hays, he joined the Kansas Army National 
Guard. After graduating Fort Hays in 1985, Greg worked as a game warden 
for the Kansas Wildlife and Parks department in Saline and Ottawa 
counties. In November 2021, Greg retired from the Guard as a Colonel 
after 40 years of service. He then retired from Wildlife and Parks in 
March 2022.

Greg loved teaching Hunter Education and working as the boating 
officer for Wildlife and Parks. He looked forward every year to the 
Smoky Hill River Festival and was a huge Chiefs fan. Throughout Greg’s 
life but especially during his year of retirement, he packed his days 
full of family, friends, and travel. He and Melinda traveled all over 
the world, but he loved being at home, taking morning walks with 
Melinda, working to maintain their property, and sitting outside 
enjoying the view and conversation with Melinda. He loved visiting and 
hosting his grandkids.

Greg is survived by his wife Melinda; his parents Larry and Kay 
Salisbury of Melvern, Kan.; son Brandon (Tamara) Salisbury of Conway 
Springs, Kan.; daughter Meghan (Corey) Redfern of Arma, Kan.; brother 
Randy of Overland Park, Kan.; six grandchildren and a large circle of 
friends.

A visitation will be Sunday, April 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ryan 
Mortuary, Salina, KS. Memorial services will be Monday, April 24, at 10 
a.m. at Bennington Bible Church, Bennington, KS. with a graveside 
service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, Manhattan, KS at 2 p.m. that 
afternoon.

Ray Thomas “Jack” Duncan, 75, of Levant, KS, died Monday, April 17, 
2023, at his home, surrounded by family with much laughter, prayer, and 
love. He was born January 20, 1948, in Hayward, CA, to Floyd and Evelyn 
(Cranston) Duncan. 
Jack was a loving husband married to Marla “Suzi” (Smahlik) Duncan for 
52 years, a proud father for 42 years, and an even prouder grandfather 
for 13 years. He was the finest and most loyal friend anyone could want 
or ask for. 
Jack was a patriot and a fighter and served his country proudly. He was 
the last remaining Special Forces from his group. Like many of his 
generation, he never talked about his service. His job in Vietnam was 
para-rescue, picking up shot-down pilots and crew members. He spent 37 
months in combat, flew over 5,200 hours, lost 9 helicopters, and spent 
28 days as a prisoner of war. 
He received calls and letters from veterans and children of veterans 
over the years of those that he rescued. He didn’t do it for the 
recognition. He did it because it was the right thing to do. 
Jack was a rail-roader and a rancher; a bull rider and a rodeo clown. He
 loved to ride motorcycles and was the best man at his son’s wedding. 
Indeed, he was the Best Man. At the end of the day, his favorite things 
were being close to Suzi, sitting on the porch, watching the cows and 
listening to the birds. 
Jack could relate to all kinds of people. He never met a stranger. He 
could tease and poke fun, but never out of ugliness. The more he teased 
you, the more you knew he loved you. He loved to laugh, especially at 
himself. During one of his last few days, his family was sitting around 
him all teary-eyed, and out of nowhere he said, “Oops.” When asked what 
happened, he said, “I farted.” Even in tough moments, he was always 
joking and knew how to lighten a mood. 
Ray Thomas “Jack” Duncan will be remembered as one of the last real men …
 rugged and stubborn, but also as a gentle giant and loyal friend, with 
his kind words, and a good joke. 
Before he lost the ability to communicate, one of the final things he said was, “Remember, I love you all.” 
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandy King. 
His love will be remembered by his wife Marla “Suzi” Duncan; son Tony 
(Nicole) Duncan; grandsons, Seth and Ethan Duncan and brother Mike 
(Cherie) Duncan. 
Inurnment will take place in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, in WaKeeney, 
KS. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20,
 2023, at the Colby American Legion.

recognition. He did it because it was the right thing to do. 
Jack was a rail-roader and a rancher; a bull rider and a rodeo clown. He
 loved to ride motorcycles and was the best man at his son’s wedding. 
Indeed, he was the Best Man. At the end of the day, his favorite things 
were being close to Suzi, sitting on the porch, watching the cows and 
listening to the birds. 
Jack could relate to all kinds of people. He never met a stranger. He 
could tease and poke fun, but never out of ugliness. The more he teased 
you, the more you knew he loved you. He loved to laugh, especially at 
himself. During one of his last few days, his family was sitting around 
him all teary-eyed, and out of nowhere he said, “Oops.” When asked what 
happened, he said, “I farted.” Even in tough moments, he was always 
joking and knew how to lighten a mood. 
Ray Thomas “Jack” Duncan will be remembered as one of the last real men …
 rugged and stubborn, but also as a gentle giant and loyal friend, with 
his kind words, and a good joke. 
Before he lost the ability to communicate, one of the final things he said was, “Remember, I love you all.” 
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandy King. 
His love will be remembered by his wife Marla “Suzi” Duncan; son Tony 
(Nicole) Duncan; grandsons, Seth and Ethan Duncan and brother Mike 
(Cherie) Duncan. 
Inurnment will take place in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, in WaKeeney, 
KS. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20,

Thomas A. “Tom” Frederking, of Plainville, KS, passed away on April 12, 2023, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. He was born on May 8, 1960, in Ellsworth, KS to Theodore C. and Saundra (McGee) Frederking. He married Lori J. Panzer on October 17, 1981, in Hays, KS. They were blessed with four children: Shawn, Brandon, Katelyn, and Logan.

Tom grew up in&nbsp;Sylvan Grove, KS&nbsp;and graduated from&nbsp;Sylvan&nbsp;Unified&nbsp;High School&nbsp;in 1978. He then went on&nbsp;to Barton County Community&nbsp;College&nbsp;for a year.&nbsp;Tom was an oilfield sales manager for Crawford Supply for&nbsp;the past&nbsp;7&nbsp;years, and before that he worked many years for Harbison-Fischer.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and&nbsp;4th&nbsp;Degree Member of the&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Council 1857.

Tom&nbsp;never met a stranger. To him, everyone was just a friend he hadn’t yet met. He&nbsp;was an avid KU Basketball fan. He enjoyed youth sports through coaching&nbsp;and refereeing, starting when he was 21 years old&nbsp;in&nbsp;1981&nbsp;until 2019. He was head&nbsp;boys’&nbsp;basketball coach for Plainville Cardinals from 2004 through 2008.&nbsp;He also&nbsp;enjoyed playing cards at Ruder Oil&nbsp;and never hesitated to take money from all the guys!&nbsp;He loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.&nbsp;Some of Tom’s favorite&nbsp;times&nbsp;were those&nbsp;spent&nbsp;together&nbsp;at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tom is survived by his wife, Lori of the home in Plainville; children: Shawn Frederking and fiancé Bradi Blanco of Edmond, OK, Brandon Frederking (Kendra) of Bentonville, AR, Katelyn Dunlap (Michael) of Ottawa, KS, and Logan Frederking of Kansas City, MO;&nbsp;siblings: Richard Frederking (Brenda) of Plainville, Dale Frederking of Russellville, AR, Tracy Frederking of Sylvan Grove, KS, and Joanna&nbsp;Donley (Tracy) of Salina, KS; step-mother, Ruby Frederking of Russellville, AR; and three grandchildren: Harper, Henry, and Addison Jo.

He is preceded in death by his parents,&nbsp;Theodore&nbsp;and Saundra Frederking.

Tom was a good-hearted man who worked hard, enjoyed&nbsp;life,&nbsp;and cherished his family and friends. Although he was taken from us far too soon, we know that those we enjoyed and loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. We can smile because he lived and left us with cherished memories that will live forever in our hearts. He will be remembered in love.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.&nbsp;

Thomas A. 'Tom' Frederking

Patrick S. Eastes, 60 years old, of Smith Center Kansas passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on April 16th, 2023.

He was born March 9, 1963, in Pratt, Kansas, to Jack and Dona (Dodson) Eastes.

Patrick dedicated most of his life to the emergency medical care services.

In
 the late '80s, he started as a volunteer fire fighter for Pratt, KS, and
 quickly fell in love with the idea of helping others, he chose to 
expand his education and knowledge by becoming an EMT - RN -and 
PARAMEDIC, he started work for Pratt county EMS, then moved to Halstead 
KS, working for yet another EMS, while branching out working in the ER 
at Saint Francis regional medical center in Wichita. In the early '90s,&nbsp; he became a paramedic.

In other years he worked at Pratt regional Medical Center, Hastings Nebraska hospital and flew with EagleMed.

In
 November of 2000, he made the decision to move to Smith Center, jumping 
on board to become the director of Smith County EMS! Patrick loved the 
community and always said he signed his life to this community, and this
 is where he always wanted to be, helping our county! Smith Center will 
always be our home!

Patrick loved watching his grand 
girls grow up, he will always be on that sideline rooting for Syd no 
matter the sport or event, softball volleyball basketball or gymnastics.

Embree
 is still young, but he loved getting down on the floor and playing with
 her whether it be with a ball, dolls or being served coffee and tea. He
 enjoyed every moment with his grand girls!

Patrick is 
survived by his wife Patricia (Gibson) Eastes; daughter Saisha-spouse 
Jeremy and granddaughter Embree;  Son Ethan-spouse Jess and 
granddaughter Sydney; son Kale (of the home); brothers Zon (Peggy) 
Eastes and Jeff (Lynn) Eastes; Sister Kim-Nephews Wesley nieces Jackie, 
Lindsey, Jack, Brent and Brian.

He will truly be missed by not only his family but by many others.

Evelyn Delores Zimmerman, 88, of Colby, died Saturday, April 15, 2023, 
at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. She was born January 16, 1935, in 
Flagler, CO, to Homer and Marjorie (Clemans) Mundell. Evelyn was raised 
by her grandmother, Frances Adolph, and graduated from Winona High 
School. 

She then married Doyle J. Zimmerman on June 14, 1953, in Colby. 
To this union four children were born. Evelyn was a talented seamstress 
and made the kids clothing. She spent many years as a crossing guard for
 Colby Elementary School. In 1974, Doyle and Evelyn purchased Hi-Plains 
Implement. 

Evelyn went to work as the secretary and enjoyed working 
side-by-side with her husband until their retirement in 1999. In her 
free time, Evelyn enjoyed bowling, gardening, riding motorcycles, 
cooking and cheering on KU Basketball. She also liked fishing and going 
to Trenton Lake. Evelyn had a sharp memory and enjoyed visiting during 
their regular “Saturday Night Friends Night.” 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Doyle; brothers, Cy, 
Don, Jerry, Rich and Walt and grandson Mitchell Zimmerman. 
Evelyn is survived by her children, Deb (Bob) Hedge, of Salina, KS,

Mary A. Murray, age 60, passed away on

accident.&nbsp; She was born on March 26, 1963, in Oberlin, Kansas, the 
daughter of Dale Clinton and Agnes Marie Koerperich Swank.&nbsp; A resident 
of Scott City, Kansas, since 2010 moving from Pence, Kansas, she was a 
Registered Nurse.

She was a member of the Apostolic Church in Garden City, Kansas.

On November 10, 1990, she married Virgil G. Murray in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

 Mary Alice Murray

Robert Milton “Bob” Foster, of Plainville, Kansas, passed away on
 April 16, 2023, at the Ascension Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas, 
at the age of 91. He was born on August 19, 1931, the third oldest of 15
 children, to Clarence Alfred and Lea Elda (Allen) Foster in Hoxie, 
Kansas.

Bob grew up in Hoxie until the age of 14 when 
the family moved to Lenora, KS. He graduated from Lenora High School 
with the Class of 1950. After high school he continued working with his 
dad at Foster Water Well Drilling until 1951 when he enlisted in the US 
Airforce at San Antonio, TX. He served in Korea and ended in Wichita 
Falls, TX. In 1954 he went to Barber College in Amarillo, TX and 
practiced in Wichita Falls for 5 years. He then went to work in the oil 
field for Jones &amp; Laughlin in Wichita Falls until 1968. He then 
moved to Hill City, KS where he worked for Northwestern Pump &amp; 
Supply. In 1975 work took him to Plainville, where he worked until the 
company resolved. He worked for 25 years for Northwestern Pump &amp; 
Supply until retirement.

Bob was a member of the American Legion – Gardner, VFW – Plainville, and Senior Center – Plainville.

Bob
 was a dedicated hard worker, but he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, 
camping, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with all his 
grandchildren. He loved to teach hunter safety to young kids – boys and 
girls. In 1977, he received the Master Hunter Safety Instructor of the 
year. Bob loved hunting with his sons, especially the one adventure that
 took him elk hunting in Colorado where he bagged his first elk. Bob 
loved to go fishing with anyone, but especially his grandchildren. Bob 
never knew a stranger; he could talk to anyone and was always telling 
jokes.

Bob lived his last year at Via Christi in Hays. 
His last wish was to be baptized and it was fulfilled on the morning of 
his passing with his children and family by his side. His faith in God 
was not only a source of strength for himself, but also for all who knew
 him.

 is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lea; son, Robert

 </figure>Robert Milton “Bob” Foster, of Plainville, Kansas, passed away on
 April 16, 2023, at the Ascension Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas, 
at the age of 91. He was born on August 19, 1931, the third oldest of 15
 children, to Clarence Alfred and Lea Elda (Allen) Foster in Hoxie, 
Kansas.Bob grew up in Hoxie until the age of 14 when 
the family moved to Lenora, KS. He graduated from Lenora High School 
with the Class of 1950. After high school he continued working with his 
dad at Foster Water Well Drilling until 1951 when he enlisted in the US 
Airforce at San Antonio, TX. He served in Korea and ended in Wichita 
Falls, TX. In 1954 he went to Barber College in Amarillo, TX and 
practiced in Wichita Falls for 5 years. He then went to work in the oil 
field for Jones &amp; Laughlin in Wichita Falls until 1968. He then 
moved to Hill City, KS where he worked for Northwestern Pump &amp; 
Supply. In 1975 work took him to Plainville, where he worked until the 
company resolved. He worked for 25 years for Northwestern Pump &amp; 
Supply until retirement.Bob was a member of the American Legion – Gardner, VFW – Plainville, and Senior Center – Plainville.Bob
 was a dedicated hard worker, but he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, 
camping, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with all his 
grandchildren. He loved to teach hunter safety to young kids – boys and 
girls. In 1977, he received the Master Hunter Safety Instructor of the 
year. Bob loved hunting with his sons, especially the one adventure that
 took him elk hunting in Colorado where he bagged his first elk. Bob 
loved to go fishing with anyone, but especially his grandchildren. Bob 
never knew a stranger; he could talk to anyone and was always telling 
jokes.Bob lived his last year at Via Christi in Hays. 
His last wish was to be baptized and it was fulfilled on the morning of 
his passing with his children and family by his side. His faith in God 
was not only a source of strength for himself, but also for all who knew
 him.He is survived by his sons, Les (Tina) Foster,

Robert Milton Foster

Mary Sue Long, the oldest child of George O. and Mary Ann (Johnson) 
Votapka, was born on February 9, 1948, in Oberlin, Kansas.  She joined 
her loved ones in heaven after a battle with cancer on April 8, 2023.

Sue
 was raised on the family farm north of Jennings where she loved caring 
for animals and playing in her grandmother’s and mother’s flower beds.  
She attended school in Jennings and graduated from High School in 1966.

Lifelong
 learning was important to Sue.  She returned to college at age 36 and 
completed a bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Fort Hays State
 University in 1987, graduating with honors.  While working full-time, 
she continued to pursue her education and completed her master's degree 
in 1991.

Her career included working at a bank, as a legal 
secretary, harvest help at the local elevator, and devoting 29 years to 
education.  Sue retired in 2004 after serving 17 years as the Adult 
Education (Outreach) Coordinator for Colby Community College.  Following
 retirement, she served six years as the Jennings City Clerk.  She was a
 member of the Jennings Book Club and the Jennings Tuesday Study Club.

In
 1998, Sue returned to the Jennings Community to again live the 
wonderful country life.  She renovated a century old farm home and 
landscaped the yard.  It was her goal to be able to look out of any 
window and see flowers and that goal was accomplished.  Her vegetable 
garden was shared with family and friends each year.  Stray cats and 
dogs often found new homes at Sue’s house.  After relocating to 
Jennings, she learned to run the tractor and grain cart and helped her 
family with corn and wheat harvest for many years.

Christmas was a
 magical time at Sue’s home.  She decorated every room of her house and 
filled the yard with bright Christmas décor.  Sue also made Victorian 
Christmas Stockings to give to family and friends including the angel 
tree children sponsored by Tuesday Study Club.

Her daughter and 
granddaughter were the pride of her life.  She is survived by daughter 
Lori Schiefen and granddaughter Katlyn Schiefen of Overland Park, 
Kansas.  Other survivors include her brother Tom (Terri Hanke) Votapka 
and her sister Jean Lee (Rollie) Halligan and her adored nieces, 
nephews, cousins, and loved rescue dog Lady Jane.

She was preceded
 in death by her parents, George O. and Mary Votapka, her sister and 
brother-in-law, Ann and Rex Rowh, and her grandparents, Frank and Leoba 
Votapka and Otto and Gladys Johnson.

Cremation was chosen.  Sue 
will be buried in the Jennings Cemetery close to other family and with 
one of her beloved dogs, Wally.  Services will be held over Memorial Day
 weekend.

Mary Sue Long

Duane&nbsp;G.&nbsp;Schwab&nbsp;"Schwabie", 90, passed away at Hospice House in 
Hutchinson, KS on Apr. 15th surrounded by loved ones. Born on April 1st, 
1933 in La Crosse, KS, he was the son of Henry &amp; Helen (Black) 
Schwab. 

Duane grew up in La Crosse graduating from High School in 1952 
where he excelled in athletics receiving many offers to further his 
sports career. He decided to serve in the US Navy instead.&nbsp;After his 
time in the service, Duane married Thelma Stanley; he then moved his 
family to Wyoming. During their time there, Duane worked in the oilfield
 around the towns of Casper and Bairoil. 

Thelma passed away in 1967 and 
in 1970 the Schwab family moved to Ellinwood where Duane was blessed to 
operator his oilfield business, Schwab's Tinker Shop, Inc alongside his 
son John. Their operation spanned multiple states and countries. Duane 
was a true craftsman; together he and son John invented and engineered a
 handful of devices to be used throughout the oilfield.&nbsp;Duane married 
Kathleen M. Komarek in 1991 at the home of his son in Liberal, KS.&nbsp;Duane
 also owned Schwabie’s Place, the restaurant that later became John 
Henry's. Schwabie's passion was collecting and working on Model T and A 
cars. He was a member of auto clubs in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and 
Arkansas.&nbsp;Duane also loved to fish and spent lots of time at Kanopolis 
Lake with his betterhalf, Kathy.

Survivors include wife, Kathleen 
M. Schwab, Ellinwood, KS; son, John and wife Amanda, Liberal, KS; 
grandchildren, Nique (Todd) Brown, Whitney (David) Hampton, Dallas 
Schwab (companion Stacie), Johnette (Dustin) Johnson, Kendra Bozarth; 
and 16 beloved great-grandchildren. Duane was preceded in death by his 
first wife, Thelma; brothers, Claude and Glenn; and sisters Georgia and 
Dorothy.&nbsp;

Funeral Service will take place Thursday, April 20th, 10:30 
AM at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood with Pastor Thomas Reazin officiating. 
Military honors will follow the service at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in 
Ellinwood, KS. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 19th, from 11-7 PM with

Edna Marie Thomas, 100, of Salina, passed away Saturday, April 15th, 2023.

Edna was born in Russell County, Kansas, on December 8, 1922, a daughter of Julia (Steinle) and Charles Letsch.

Survivors
 include two daughters, Mary (Frank) Svaty Eichelkraut of Sacramento, 
California, Carolyn Hutchins, of Salina, Kansas; two sons, Gordon Svaty,
 of Grand Island, Nebraska; Kenneth Svaty, (Aileen), of Rowlett, Texas; 9
 Grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and her sister, Betty Nelson, of

She is preceded in death by her parents; 10 siblings; and her granddaughter.

Edna Marie Thomas

Betty Jean Robinson, 94, of Perham, Minn., passed away on April 9, 2023, of natural causes.

The oldest child of Maurice and Goldie (True) Harding, she was born 
on May 28, 1928, in rural Cheney, Kansas, and graduated from Cheney High 
School in 1946. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in home 
economics and art at Kansas State University in 1950, later completing 
postgraduate studies at Fort Hays University and the University of 
Minnesota.

While at K-State, Betty Jean met George H. Robinson, and they were 
married in the chapel there on January 27, 1951. They were blessed to 
have three children: Eugene, George and Audrey.

Betty Jean started her career in K-State Extension Education as the 
first home demonstration agent for Lincoln County. She also served as 
home agent for nearby Ellis County and as associate 4-H agent for 
Sedgwick County. Later, she served as dietitian to the first men's 
dormitory at Fort Hays University.

Upon the death of George's brother and business partner Wallace, 
Betty Jean helped her husband run their truck stop, the Robinson 
Transport Inn, and their creamery, Kings Kwality Ice Cream, in Hays, 
Kan. An adventurous capable woman, she spent two summers as the chef for
 Wagons Ho, a covered wagon tourist experience based on the historic 
Butterfield Trail near Quinter, Kan.

Arriving in rural Perham in 1968, Betty Jean substitute-taught for a 
few years at Perham High School and taught adult education classes. She 
volunteered as a 4-H project leader, judged 4-H fairs for many years and
 was active with the Minnesota Horticulture Society. A University of 
Minnesota Master Gardener, Betty Jean, together with George, grew a 
bounty of fruit and vegetables in their Boedigheimer Lake garden.

True to her Christian faith, Betty Jean served her church as a youth 
leader, choir member, board member (including chairing the board) and 
treasurer of United Methodist Women. She also taught both children's and
 adult Sunday School. While serving 25 years as the Perham United 
Methodist Church historian, she authored history booklets commemorating 
church centennials.

A creative spirit, Betty Jean said she was never happier than when 
she was arranging flowers or painting with watercolors. Welcomed into 
the folds of the Perham art community, she took painting classes and 
advanced her skills. She shared her knowledge and passion for watercolor
 by teaching painting to fellow retirees while wintering in her Texas 
retirement community and summering at home in Perham.

Struggling with the pain of rheumatoid arthritis for decades, Betty 
Jean said she was eternally grateful for the loving care her family 
members provided. Even though her physical capabilities diminished over 
time, her mind remained sharp, and her curiosity about the natural world
 proved to be inexhaustible.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Robinson, and 
sisters Maxine Harding and Joan Kannarr. She is survived by her sister 
Darlene Hansen and brother Richard (Marie) Harding; two sons, Eugene 
(Julie Olson) Robinson and George (Carla) Robinson; and daughter, Audrey
 (Craig) Robinson Favorito.

Betty Jean's pride and joy were her ten grandchildren and three-plus great-grandchildren (one on the way).

A memorial service will be held at Perham United Methodist Church on 
June 10, 2023, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests 
donations be made to the Perham United Methodist Church in her memory.

Betty Jean Robinson

Sylverina "Silver" Depperschmidt, 95, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. 

Silver was born in Liebenthal, KS. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Magdalene Enslinger; husband, Harold Depperschmidt; 2 brothers; 1 sister. 

Silver was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and was active in Harvest House and the Prayer line. She also enjoyed working in her gardens, spending time with family and friends, and going to the Senior Center. Silver retired from Research Partnership as a data collector. 

She is survived by her sister, Viola (Clem) Unrein of Hays, KS; brother, Corny Enslinger of Lenexa, KS; daughters, Carol Allen of Bel Aire, KS, Mary (Darrell) Taylor of Wichita, KS, Donna Chippeaux of Wichita, KS, Nancy (David) Sponsel of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. 

Rosary will be at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Downing &amp; Lahey East Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

 </figure>Sylverina "Silver" Depperschmidt, 95, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Silver was born in Liebenthal, KS. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Magdalene Enslinger; husband, Harold Depperschmidt; 2 brothers; 1 sister. Silver was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and was active in Harvest House and the Prayer line. She also enjoyed working in her gardens, spending time with family and friends, and going to the Senior Center. Silver retired from Research Partnership as a data collector. She is survived by her sister, Viola (Clem) Unrein of Hays, KS; brother, Corny Enslinger of Lenexa, KS; daughters, Carol Allen of Bel Aire, KS, Mary (Darrell) Taylor of Wichita, KS, Donna Chippeaux of Wichita, KS, Nancy (David) Sponsel of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. Rosary will be at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Downing &amp; Lahey East Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Verlin Jay Bell, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, April 12,
 2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex LTC at the age of 93. He 
and his twin brother, Vernon, were born May 13, 1929, near Studley, KS 
to Claude W. and Maude (Hite) Bell. He was one of nine children.

Verlin
 served this country in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as an Army medic. Upon 
returning from the service, he fell in love and married Carolyn White on
 November 11, 1956, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Studley, KS. 
To this marriage three children were born, Robert, Jana, and Karla

Verlin
 was a laborer and excelled in welding, working at many different 
places. For a time, he served Gove County as Sheriff. One of his 
favorite past times was playing cards with friends. Heading to a fishing
 hole with the family was a favorite also. Climbing in the car for a 
vacation trip made many great memories. Verlin especially enjoyed a 
destination that could include a cave. He was a member of VFW, American 
Legion, and served as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts in Wichita and 
Quinter and was a member of the Lions Club.

Verlin is survived by 
the mother of his children, Carolyn Bell; children, Robert Bell (Kathy) 
of Quinter, KS, Jana Brewster (Bob) of Hoxie, KS, and Karla Bell of 
Quinter, KS ; and brother, Gene Bell (Suzy) of College Station, TX.;  
grandchildren, Travis (Lindsey) Brewster, Jeff Bell, Justin Bell, Amanda
 (Jonathon) Richards, Josh Bell, Michaela (Patrick) Watson, and Paige 
Bell;  great grandkids, Trent Richards, Brody Brewster, Holly Richards, 
Brantley Brewster, Taisley Watson, and Brock Brewster.

He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Claude, and Maude Bell; twin brother, 
Vernon; brothers, Robert Bell, Albert Bell; sisters, Dorothy Richards 
and Leona Cummings and two infant siblings, Harold Dee and Marie.

God
 blessed Verlin with many healthy years, and now, we are honoring his 
memory with a memorial service followed by inurnment planned for Friday,
 April 21, 2023, at 10:30 A.M. at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Wakeeney, KS
 with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard and the 
Grainfield American Legion Post 301. A visitation will be held April 20,
 2023, from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from
 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, KS.

Verlin Jay Bell

Goodland, KS resident Robert Paul Scott passed away on Saturday, 
April 15, 2023, at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Paul was born March 11, 1932, on the adobe flats near Boyero, Colorado,&nbsp; to Margaret (Cullen) and Walter Elmore Scott.&nbsp; He was the third of 
eight children born to the couple.&nbsp;

Paul started school in Kit Carson and attended 2nd and 3rd grade in 
Cheyenne Wells until the family moved to Burlington at the beginning of 
4th grade.&nbsp; Paul started work for Yersins at the grocery store when he 
was 10 and worked after school and half a day Saturdays.&nbsp; He grew up 
riding horses around Burlington with his younger brother.

Paul graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 51 and 
following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, who he says 
gave him his first bus ride, first train ride and first boat ride to 
Korea.&nbsp;

He served in Korea from 1953 where he gave a class on rifles which 
earned him a transfer to Japan to learn how to combat load ships.&nbsp; After
 which he was stationed on the front lines until his tour was over in 
1955.

Paul went to work in Liberal, Kansas, and met and married Iva 
Lorraine.&nbsp; While in Liberal, their daughter was born in 1958 and he 
adopted Iva’s 2 children after which they went to work for Conarty 
Brothers south of Kanorado in 1962 where their son was born.

&nbsp;In 1978, Paul became a brand inspector for the State of Colorado 
until his retirement after 22 years.&nbsp; He is survived by his daughter, 
Janice of Fort Morgan, CO, his son, Ron (Margaret) of Castle Rock, CO, 
daughter Linda (Jay) of Goodland and son Danny (Vicki) of Maricopa, AZ ,
 one brother, Bill (Jeanne) of Gold, AZ&nbsp; many grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers Lawrence 
and Jeff, and four sisters Rita Ann, Leta Mae, Patty Jo and Iona.

Goodland, KS resident Phyllis Ann (Roeder) Ailey, 69, passed away on 
Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.

Phyllis was born on May 20, 1953, in Goodland, KS to Ronald and 
Dorothy (Nondorf) Roeder Sr. &nbsp;She was the oldest of five children. &nbsp;Her
 father was in the military so she attended several schools.&nbsp;Following 
graduation from Ferndale high school in Michigan, she attended the 
Vo-Tech College in Goodland and received her Associates Degree in 
Business.

Following her two years at Vo-Tech, she opened the corner cafe with 
her grandma Violet and was known for their famous peanut butter cinnamon
 rolls. After the cafe closed she moved to Oklahoma, where she was the 
Sales Manager for several convenience stores around the state. &nbsp;She 
lived in Tonkawa, Medford, Blackwell and Waynoka, OK.

In 1984, she married Everett Ailey, and they later divorced. &nbsp;

She enjoyed fishing, reading, playing games and coloring. &nbsp;She always
 believed that you should treat people the way you would like to be 
treated. &nbsp;She was also a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 
Goodland.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and one sister Karen Cecil.

Surviving family includes her brother Ron (Tina) Roeder Jr. of 
Colby, KS, a sister Rita Gattshall (Todd) of Thornton, CO and a brother 
Curtis Roeder of Oklahoma. &nbsp;She is also survived by several nieces and 
nephews.

Phyllis Ann (Roeder) Ailey

Darlene A. Leiker, 78, Hays, died Friday, April 14, 2023, at Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

She was born February 16, 1945, on the 
family farm near Victoria, the daughter of Emmanuel J. and Amelia 
(Scheck) Lang.&nbsp; She was a 1964 graduate of Victoria High School, and on 
May 8, 1965, she was united in marriage to Kenneth P. “Ken” Leiker in 
Victoria.&nbsp; They celebrated over 55 years of marriage before he preceded 
her in death on March 15, 2021.&nbsp; She was a homemaker and worked at the 
Hadley Hospital Coffee Shop.&nbsp; Her hobbies included crafts, embroidery, 
crocheting, gardening, and canning. Darlene was a member of St. Joseph 
Catholic Church in Hays, devoutly prayed the Rosary, and she loved her 
family and providing a loving home for them.

Survivors include her son, Troy Leiker 
of House Springs, MO, daughter, Connie Werth and husband Vincent Werth Jr. of Hays, a sister, Jeanette Jacobs of Topeka, three grandchildren, 
RaeLynn Werth, Cheyenna Leiker, and Chance Leiker, two great 
grandchildren, Emma Rose and Aliza Jane Leiker, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Ken, a brother, Francis Lang, and three sisters, 
Lillian Lang, Bernadette Kreutzer, and Doris Kohlrus. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with
 Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Fidelis

Darlene A. Leiker

Pastor Earl Jack Haggard, 69, of Cawker City, Kansas, and formerly of
 Russell, Kansas, entered into his eternal reward on &nbsp;Thursday, April 
13, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System Hospital in Kansas 
City, Kansas.

Earl was born on February 9, 1954, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of 
Cliff Youngblood “Jack” and Delores May (Rager) Haggard.&nbsp; The family 
moved to Texas and Earl lived there until he was in the 6th 
grade then moved back to Abilene.&nbsp; He finished his schooling at Abilene 
High School in the class of 1972.&nbsp; He met, fell in love, and was united 
in marriage to Paula Miles on December 16, 1977, in Huntington, 
Indiana.&nbsp; From this union Earl and Paula were blessed with a daughter 
Hannah.&nbsp; Early in life, he was called into full time Christian Ministry.
 Through his affiliation with the United Brethren Church, and the United
 Methodist Church, he served churches in Colby, Abilene, Gypsum, Kipp, 
Russell Otterbein, Bunker Hill, Independence, Cawker City and Glen Elder
 Kansas. He also served in Junction City, Ohio. He enjoyed researching 
genealogy, reading, watching crime TV, spending time with his friends 
and family and was a fanatical Dallas Cowboys fan.

The surviving family includes his wife Paula, daughter Hannah and dog
 Archibald Oscar all of the home.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents, brother Dean Haggard, special aunt Bertie Boaz, who helped 
raise him, and his beloved dog, Brutus Alexander.

A celebration of Pastor Earl’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on 
Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Later that day, a graveside service will be held at 
3:00 P.M. at the Abilene Memorial Cemetery in Abilene, Kansas. Pastor 
Earl loved bright colors, and since this is a celebration of his life,
