Robert L. “Bob” Pope was born on March 5, 1943, in Colby, Kansas, the son of Lawrence R. and Thersa I. (Wilson) Pope. He passed away on May 3, 2023, at the age of 80, in Mankato, Kansas.

Bob graduated from Seldan (KS) High School. 

He was united in marriage to Sharon Greenberg, and to this union three children were born. They were later divorced.

Bob worked as a semi-truck driver, and for the Baalman family near Menlo, Kansas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Julie Pope, son Russ Pope, and his dog Patches.

He is survived by his daughters Lisa Winter and Kari Morris (Vern) of Mankato, daughter-in-law Linda Pope, grandchildren Shawna, Alec, Chris, Cody, Megan and Mitchell, brother James “Jim” and his wife Glee of Arizona, and his dog Buddy. Bob is also survived by his second family, Brian and Sheri Baalman and their family.

Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Jewell Co. Strong, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Norma Dorothea Anna (Hestermann) Wegener, daughter of Henry and Emma (Niermeier) Hestermann, was born February 1, 1924, in Ludell, KS and passed away at Norton County Hospital on May 3, 2023 at the age of 99.

Norma grew up on a farm outside of Ludell, KS. 

On August 27, 1944, Norma D. Hestermann and Donald E. Wegener were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ludell, Kansas. Upon Donald’s discharge from the Army, they made their home on a farm northwest of Norton where they farmed and raised their family. 

She was a devoted farm wife and mother. She was a 4-H member growing up and a member of the Lutheran Women’s group in her adult years.

Norma was baptized on February 13, 1924 and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church on April 10, 1938. 

She attended the Immanuel Lutheran School at Ludell and graduated from Atwood High School in 1942. 

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years were she played the organ for many of those years. Later in life she became an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Norton, KS.

 She enjoyed cooking, sewing and quilting of which she was very accomplished at.

Survivors include four children, Barbara Stutz and friend Dennis Amstuz, Axtell and Minden, NE; Bruce and wife Cindy Wegener, Norton, KS; Glenda Wegener, Densmore, KS; and Sandra and husband Harvey Pakkebier, Densmore, KS; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and many other relatives and friends.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband Donald Wegener; parents Henry and Emma; daughter Connie and husband Wayne Dobesh; grandson Wyatt Whitney Wegener, stillborn son of Bruce and Cindy; four sisters and seven brothers and numerous in-laws.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Norton. Memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church and sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 West Main St. Norton, KS 67654. A private family burial was held at the Norton Cemetery on May 5, 2023.

Longtime, Kanorado, Kansas resident, Robert Emery Helderman, 72, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 surrounded by his family at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Bob was born on April 3, 1951 in Vona, Colorado to Robert Herman and Maxine White (Brown) Helderman.&nbsp; Around the age of 10, the family moved to Kanorado, where Bob attended school.

On February 25, 1973, Bob married Penny Lynn Sheldon.&nbsp; To this union, two children, Monta and Blake were born.&nbsp; 

He worked for many years as the Grain Elevator Operator at the Kanorado Co-Op.&nbsp; Bob was a member of the Kanorado United Methodist Church and was a member of the Lions Club.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents and grandparents, and one nephew Michael Montgomery.

He is survived by his wife Penny of the home in Kanorado, his daughter Monta (Gail) McCauley of Greeley, CO, his son Blake (Amber) Helderman of Goodland, KS; grandchildren Dezarea and Adam Voorhies of Windsor, CO, Brett Kaza and fiancé Veronica Rogers of Aurora, CO, Preston and Kaprice Helderman of Goodland, KS, and great-grandson Xander Kaza of Windsor, CO.&nbsp; 

He is also survived by his siblings Charlotte and Lynn Morrell of Burlington, CO, Rosali and Jr. Montgomery of Sharon Springs, KS, and many half and stepsiblings along with many nieces and nephews.

Richard Lee “Dick” Reichuber, 76, passed away on May 3, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kan. He was born on September 21, 1946, Great Bend, Kan., to Edwin and Margaret (Birzer) Reichuber. 

On July 20, 1968, he married Mary Jane Luebbers at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin, Kan. She survives.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Dick was an acoustical ceiling installer and co-owner of B&amp;R Acoustical Inc. DBA Sound Control Company. 

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Odin Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the Sons of the American Legion. 

Dick enjoyed hunting, was a hard worker, very giving of his time, and above all, took great care of his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of the home; son Jason Reichuber of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter Sara Reichuber of Hoisington, Kan.; son of the heart, Scott Christians of Hoisington, Kan.;&nbsp;&nbsp;three brothers, Edwin (Aileen) Reichuber of Hutchinson, Kan., Kenneth Reichuber of Burrton, Kan., and Gary (Janie) Reichuber of Wichita, Kan; sister-in-law Margaret Milsap of Great Bend, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; and beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Kent Kendall Schriner, age 76, passed away at his home in Albert, Kansas, on the morning of May 4, 2023. He was born on January 31, 1947, in Great Bend, to Elmer J. and Marjorie L. (Dirks) Schriner. 

He married Ellen Dinkel on May 24, 1969, at Hays, Kansas.

&nbsp;In addition to spending a lifetime in Albert, Kent was a farmer, stockman and professional supervisor. He served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for Albert and Otis, as well as the Albert Fire Department. Kent was a decorated Vietnam veteran who proudly served in the United States Army.

&nbsp;Survivors include, his wife Ellen; two sons, Jesse Schriner and wife Sabra of Seattle, Washington and Joey Schriner and wife Roxanna of West Chester, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Alexa and Rienna; two grandsons, Ethan and Zachary; and his favorite, Roman Schriner. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Randy.

&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Interment will be in the Golden Belt Memorial Park in Great Bend, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Rodney Carl 'Rod' Eisenbise, 80, formerly of Colby, KS, passed away on April 30, 2023, at his home in El Dorado after a battle with cancer. Rodney was born on June 17, 1942, in Stafford, KS; the eldest of seven children; to Eugene and Edith (Nickey) Eisenbise.

Marjorie Ann Rome, age 82, of Victoria, Kansas died Monday, May 1, 2023 at Harry Hines Memorial Hospice Center at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS after a short illness.

She was born on January 2, 1941, to Joseph M. and Albina (Kuhn) Rome. 

She was a 1958 Victoria High School graduate. She graduated from Fort Hays State University with her bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education.

Marge's passion in life was teaching and interacting with young children. She had a tremendous impact on generations of students. 

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, the outdoors, and spending time with her many lifelong friends. In recent years, she especially treasured time with her great-nieces and great-nephews and playing with her great-great-nieces and nephews.

Like her father, Marge was devoted to the interests and well-being of her community. She taught for 38 years at Victoria Elementary School. 

She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella, a Eucharistic minister, a CCD teacher, led the Children's Liturgy of the Word, and the annual children's Christmas pageant. 

She was a founding member and first president of Herzogfest, president of the Victoria Alumni Association, and an active member of the Ellis County Historical Society.

Survivors include her niece Janet Trombley and husband Don, Newtown, PA; her nephew Michael Gross, Lake Quivira, KS; a great-niece Lauren Smith, husband Bryan, children Perry, Owen, Beau, Leawood, KS; great-nephew Bret Gross, wife Kelsey, children Gwen, Madelyn, Lenexa, KS; great-nephew Ryan Trombley, Chicago, IL; great-nephew Sam Gross, New York, NY; and great-nephew Will Gross, Austin, TX.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Marie Gross; a sister, Mary Lou Rome; a nephew, Robert Gross; a niece, Virginia Gross; an infant niece, Anne Marie; her parents; and two infant brothers.

Arlene D. Pfeifer, 91, Victoria, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the Main Street Manor in Russell.

She was born March 27, 1932 in Vincent, Kansas to George and Wilhelmina (Roth) Wellbrock. 

She graduated from Victoria High School in 1950 and briefly attended Marymount College. 

Arlene married Albert R. Pfeifer in 1955 and raised a family of five children. 

When her children were school-aged, Arlene returned to college, earning an education degree from Fort Hays State University in 1974. She taught for 23 years in the Victoria School District, mostly as a kindergarten teacher. 

She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, VFW Post #1751 Ladies Auxiliary, and in 2013, she was inducted into the Victoria High School Alumni Hall of Fame. 

Her love for music and community involvement showed through her singing in the church choir and playing in the community band. 

Arlene was dedicated to youth learning and development even outside the classroom. She supported summer track and field programs, summer programs at FHSU, Christmas pageants at St. John’s Rest Home among others -- not just for her own children but for many, many others too.

Survivors include her husband of the home, five children: David (Karen) Pfeifer of O’Fallon, IL, Tom (Kathy) Pfeifer of Hays, Annette (Russ) Lane of Gardner, Jeff (Amy) Pfeifer of Gardner, Tim (Karen) Pfeifer of Shawnee, three sisters: Gladys (Dale) Pfeifer of Victoria, Mary Mirkovich of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Rosann Welser of Bettendorf, IA, two sisters-in-law: Marlene Wellbrock of Bainbridge Island, WA and Joan Wellbrock of Victoria, 17 grandchildren, Erik Prince, Janelle, Matt, Nick, Shelly, Cody, and Ashlyn Pfeifer, Tyler Lane, Jessica Knutson, Samantha Tiller, Abigail Hughes, Ezra, Blair, Robert, and Dan Pfeifer, Allison Larson, and Lucas Pfeifer, and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Mary Wellbrock, two brothers: Varian and Eugene Wellbrock, two brothers-in-law: Arthur Mirkovich and Hal Welser; and two grandchildren: Eric Pfeifer and Kimber Lane.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m.on Monday, May 8, 2023 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, with Fr. James Moster, O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery in Walker. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Monday, all at the Basilica. A combined Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 6:30, all on Sunday at the Basilica.

Collin Anthony Rous, 31, of Prairie Village, KS passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 1:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5500 Woodson Road, Mission, KS. A private burial will follow at a later date.&nbsp;

Collin was born on January 24, 1992, in Hays, KS. A graduate of Colby High School, class of 2010, he continued his education at Colby Community College and Kansas State University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed as a mechanical engineer in the Kansas City area for eight years. 

Collin was a friend to many, bringing his infectious laugh and joyful demeanor to every interaction. He enjoyed working on home renovation projects, playing board games with friends, spending time with their dog, Ollie, traveling with loved ones and simply enjoying others’ company. A lover of knowledge, he was always ready to learn something new - from the kitchen and the garden to electrical and plumbing. He freely shared that knowledge with family and friends - always interested in any new project.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Winifred and Clarence Rous, half-brother Kevin Rous, maternal grandmother Karen Schumacher and stepgrandfather Norman Staats. 

Collin is survived by his wife of six years Anna (Juenemann) Rous; father Vernon Rous; mother Tanya (Brian) Staats; sisters Charell (Jeremy) Owings; Cierra (Darin) Einsel; stepsister Chanelle Staats; numerous nieces and nephews; loving in-laws; extended family; and friends.&nbsp;

Dan was born April 18, 1956 to Elmer T. and Donna Kay (Anderson) Frick of Kinsley. He married Sherry L. Wassinger in Ness City on October 24, 1981; they separated in 1996. He later moved to Cunningham.

Dan was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. Along with a passion for his work he always dedicated time to his friends, family, and community, and brought joy to all who knew him.

He was a member of the Cunningham Christian Church.

Dan is survived by his mother Donna Kay Frick of Kinsley; brother Steven Frick of McPherson and sister Karen Frick of Manhattan; sons Christopher Frick of Grinnell and Brandon (Carrie) Frick of Hays; and one grandson, Jasper Frick of Hays. He was predeceased by his father Elmer Frick and sister Karol Frick.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Kinsley. The family will have private graveside service afterwards, followed by a reception at the United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

Shirley Kay Gaston, 83, Hays, died Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born August 23, 1939 in Wichita, the daughter of Clifford Wayne and Ruth Oneita (Newton) Bolinger. 

She graduated from Wichita West High School in 1957, where she was a cheerleader, and on April 12, 1963 she was united in marriage to James Douglas “Doug” Gaston in Wichita. They celebrated 25 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on June 22, 1988. 

Doug and Shirley lived in several towns throughout Kansas before moving to Hays in 1985. 

After raising her family, Shirley began her professional career and worked in the personnel department at Fort Hays State University until her retirement in 2002. 

Shirley had a strong faith in God and was an early member of Agape Southern Baptist Church, which is now Crosspoint Church. She enjoyed music, playing piano, watching sports, traveling, sewing, crafts, cooking, and baking. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life.

Survivors include her sons, Troy Gaston and wife Marty of Sanford, NC and Terry Gaston and wife Tami of Gering, NE, five grandchildren, Leanne Kenner and husband Jonathan, Jason Gaston and wife Katie, Brett Gaston, Aaron Gaston and wife Abigail and Christopher Gaston and wife Kylee, and five great-grandchildren, Holt Gaston, Annie Gaston, Parks Gaston, Colby Kenner, and Rhys Gaston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Doug, and a son, Richard Gaston.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Pastor Micah Sanderson officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Old Mission Cemetery in Wichita. 

Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Council of Ellis County or to Hospice of HaysMed.

Malachi Patrick Miller, 12, of Gorham, Kansas entered eternity Monday, May 1, 2023 at his home after battling a year-long illness.

Malachi was born August 23, 2010 at his home, in a hurry to enter this world, as he arrived just minutes after the midwife rolled in. Malachi got to work immediately with his unique personality, sense of humor, and quick wit. He loved putting a smile on anyone’s face. Malachi was the fourth of six children who were affectionately known as the “Miller 6-pack.”

After losing his father to a similar illness at the age of 6, Malachi often spoke of looking forward to the day he was able to play with his daddy in heaven.

While Malachi was only on this earth for 12 years, he lived life to the fullest every single day. He began playing the violin at age 4, the piano at age 6, and was singing from the moment he was born until he no longer had the ability to use his voice in his final days.

Malachi’s favorite sport was baseball. He had such a love for America’s pastime, that he was back on the field only 11 days following surgery for a spinal cord tumor (despite the doctor telling him he could not do so). Surgery initially left him unable to walk, but that did not stop Malachi’s determination to get back on the field. 

Malachi also had a love for the arts, especially the local theater productions. He got his big break in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and went on to star in productions such as “The King and I,” “Rats! The Story of the Pied Piper” and one of his all-time favorites, Hays Community Theatre’s 2022 summer production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Malachi was a member of the Big Creek 4-H Club in Gorham where he served as a Song Leader, Recreation Leader, Reporter, and Parliamentarian throughout his 4-H career. Some of his favorite projects included Poultry, Dog Care &amp; Training, Shooting Sports, and Foods &amp; Nutrition. Malachi especially enjoyed learning how to properly handle and shoot a gun. He was also proud of his Grand Champion duck, Nibbles, who he made sure all the doctors and nurses knew about during his hospital stays. Malachi sang vocal solos at 4-H Days each year, and advanced to Regional Club Days 4 times, often being told his voice was “golden.”

Malachi was an award-winning author, writing and illustrating four books for the PBS Kids Writers Contest. He enjoyed swimming, beginning lessons before he was 1 year old.

Malachi had a great love for animals and animals loved him in return. This past summer, he won Rooks County Grand Champion Overall Dog Agility, despite having lost function in his right arm. He also inherited his late father’s love of fishing.

In November, Malachi suffered a setback that left him paralyzed from the neck down along with a 7 week hospital stay at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. While there, he was given the opportunity to have his one true wish granted through the “Make A Wish” foundation. After serious thought, he asked for a shih tzu puppy and was granted this wish. He named his puppy, Agnes, and she arrived the day after Malachi got home from the hospital. He spent his final days snuggling with his faithful friend.

Malachi did not know a stranger. He had a gift for striking up a conversation with people of all ages. He made so many friends with nurses, doctors, rehab teams, and respiratory therapists while he was continuing his fight. So much so, many continued to keep in touch after Malachi returned home.

Malachi was a member of St. Philomena’s Chapel of Gorham where he was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, and was confirmed. He was an altar server. Learning his Latin responses was an important goal that he had been working towards this past year. He was never afraid to tell others about his Traditional Catholic faith. He lived through so many sufferings this past year, but was cheerful and could often be heard praying out loud from the confines of his hospital bed. He accepted his cross willingly, all for the love of Almighty God.

Malachi is survived by his mother, Jenna of the home, his 5 siblings, Conner (17), Christian (16), Janessa (14), Matthias (9), and Jenson (8), all of the home; aunt, Mari Jo Stout, Plainville and Gorham,&nbsp;grandparents Will and Patti Stout, rural Natoma; aunts and uncles Diana and Derek Schutte, Halstead, Shane and Michelle Stout, Kansas City, and Ryan and Micah Becker, Russell; 13 cousins whom he loved dearly, and his special friend Kevin Eickhoff, Natoma.

He is preceded in death by his daddy, Dru Miller, grandparents Donnie and Duane Miller, uncle David Miller, and cousin Dyron Schutte.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Gorham Senior Center. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A vigil and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

 The family has requested in lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established as the Malachi Miller Memorial Fund.

Mavis L. (Strecker) Kingsley - of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at her home. She was born at her parent's home at 425 East 14th, Street, Russell, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward August Strecker and Alverda (Karst) Strecker-Mortimer; her husband, Dr. Keith Kingsley and her sister, Rae Ellen (Strecker) Smith-Pfeifer.

Mavis' father was killed in an oilfield accident in 1950, so she and her sister, Rae Ellen had to work to help support the family. Mavis, at ten years old was the popcorn girl at the Mecca Theater, later an usher at the Dream Theater. She worked at the swimming pool every summer during high school. All while growing up in Russell.

Mavis graduated from Russell High School in 1958. Thereafter she married Keith Kingsley. They were married for 50 years. From that union came two sons, Scott and Chris and one daughter, Sandy.

Mavis has worked all her life. While Keith was a County Agent in Lexington, Nebraska she worked for H.O. Smith Abstract Co.

During the nine years Keith was earning his college degrees including a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, she had many jobs. She was secretary at KSU Photo Services, babysitter, sold Avon, secretary at County Treasurer, Riley County Courthouse, all while raising their children. She was a realtor for many years in Hays. Before retirement she was interior decorator which was her labor of passion. Her favorite thing was fishing, loved cooking and baking, reading and doing pencil drawings

Mavis is survived by her children, Dr. Scott Kingsley and wife, Lynda, of McKinney, TX; Chris Kingsley and wife, Michele, of Hays, KS; Sandy Kingsley of Laramie, WY; her grandchildren, Ashley Kingsley; Aaron Kingsley; Brandon Kingsley (Kaylee); Alyssa Cunningham (Chris); Tanner Perkins; Cody Perkins; Eathan Perkins; Alex Perkins; Crystal Cain of Raytown, MO her great-grandchildren, Cooper Betts; Callie Betts; Ava Cunningham; Braedon Cunningham, Hays, KS; Brenton Kingsley; Wenston Kingsley and Brynlee Kingsley.

Lori Rae Vasquez, age 38, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023, at her home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on September 28, 1984, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Howard W. and Jan Fuller Green.&nbsp; 

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was the activity director at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.

She was a member of the Pence Community Church in Pence, Kansas, Teens For Christ, 4-H Leader, and a member of the Scott County Fair Board.

On August 26, 2006, she married Eric C. Vasquez in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Survivors include her husband Eric C. Vasquez of Scott City, Kansas, sons Baylor R. Vasquez of Scott City, Kansas, and Barrett O. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Del Ray and Sharon Fuller, Hubert and Jeanette Green, mother-in-law Melissa Vasquez, uncle-in-law Regie Robertson, and grandparents-in-law Reg and Jody Robertson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Don Williams presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be written to the Lori Vasquez Memorial Fund in care of Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, P.O. Box 553, Scott City, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, 410 S. Washington St., Scott City, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
