Clarence Eugene Gumescheimer, 84, passed away on June 4, 2023, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on October 27, 1938, the youngest son of John Gumescheimer, Jr. and Lydia (Heronemus) Gumescheimer, at Ness City, Kansas. 

He grew up on the farm southeast of Ness City and later moved to Bazine, Kansas, with his parents, and attended Bazine Grade and High School, graduating in 1957.

On June 8, 1958, he married Genelda Rein, his high school sweetheart, and to their union there were two children born: Kevin Lynn and Tamara Marie. They lived in Ness City, Kansas, until 1984, when they moved to Hays, Kansas.

Clarence worked in the automobile industry most of his life, selling parts and automobiles, until later he switched to the farm machinery, calling on customers and fulfilling their farm needs. He retired in 2010 due to health problems. He very much enjoyed going fishing, boating, and hunting with his family.

Survivors include a son, Kevin (Andrea McSherry) of Wright, Kansas; daughter, Tammy Hatesohl of Manhattan, Kansas; four grandchildren, Nikki Seybert (Rocky), Eric Hatesohl (fiancée, Erin LeFever), and Jared Gumescheimer (Camrynn); two great-grandchildren, Levi and Emersyn Gumescheimer; one stepgrandson, Richard; a sister, Lillian (Harry) Born of Follett, Texax; and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, “Nellie”, a brother, Vernon Gumescheimer; a stepgranddaughter, Kayla; and stepgreat-granddaughter, Aalilyah.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023, with the family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2023, at Great Bend Cemetery North with Pastor Joshua Leu presiding. Memorials have been designated to the First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Mervin Randall “Merv” Hathaway, 92, formerly of Hudson, died May 25, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village. &nbsp;He was born September 29, 1930, in Stafford, to Elmer William and Dora Louise (Hart) Hathaway.

Merv attended school in Stafford and St. John. &nbsp;He served in the United States Army from 1948-1949, in the Army Reserve from 1949-1953, and in the United States Air Force from 1953-1961. &nbsp;Merv owned and operated a service station in Haysville and Hudson, but found his true passion as a drug and alcohol counselor for the Larned State Hospital. 

He attended Trinity Community Church, Hudson, and First Congregational Church, Hutchinson.

On May 13, 1956, he married Vertabell May Ukens, in Hudson, at Trinity United Church of Christ. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Merv is survived by&nbsp; his wife of 67 years, Vertabell of Hutchinson; daughters Shari Koptik (George) of Great Bend, Sandy Benoit (Don) of Damar, KS, and Stacy Gasper (Tyler) of Hutchinson; sister-in-law Connie Hathaway of Hudson; grandchildren Peggi Axelson (Mark), &nbsp;of Plainville, Kyle Benoit (Justine) of Damar, &nbsp;Elizabeth Phillips (Ryan) of Platte City, MO, Jaci Wise (Colton) of Plainville, Randall Polifka of Hutchinson, Chase Polifka (Carissa) of Hays and Michelle Gasper of Hutchinson; and six great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

He was preceded in death by&nbsp; his parents; brothers Omar “Dean” Hathaway (Clara) and Daryl Hathaway; and two granddaughters Kaitlyn and Kendra Gasper.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at First Congregational Church, 3410 N. Plum, Hutchinson, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. &nbsp;Graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Cemetery, Hudson, with military honors conducted by the McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard. Robert L. "Bob" Schmidt, age 85, of Hays, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Homestead of Hays Assisted Living. Bob was born August 23, 1937, in Hays, to Victor and Katherine (Meis) Schmidt. He married Margaret Ann Brungardt and they later divorced. Together they had six children, Bob, Don, Jon, Lori, Christa, and Melissa.

Bob’s first jobs were working mostly in construction and usually on the end of a shovel or with a hammer in his hand. He quickly learned that if he ever wanted to earn real money that he would not be able to work for someone else. With this understanding he became a lifelong entrepreneur.

His first “real” job was selling insurance and he quickly rose to be in the top 10% in his field and was awarded the infamous Insurance Ring. He was also awarded numerous trips to Las Vegas for his outstanding sales performance.

Bob found the Earl Nightingale Success and Motivation Institute and his life changed dramatically. His goal setting started at this time for Family, Monetary and Religious life. With this passion he would accomplish more before his workday started than most would achieve in a full day of work. This determination worked in his real estate career, being responsible for erecting over 325 buildings. Setting goals was crucial in his life, which often included him helping his children’s friends, neighborhood children or anyone he could help.

Bob and Marge had immense success as a bowling team and Bob bowled several perfect 300 individual games in his lifetime. As a young parent Bob coached his children’s sport teams and attended as many games as possible. He also enjoyed camping and after a miserable weekend at Cedar Bluff in a tent a good friend, Joe Ward, introduced him to enjoying lake life in the comfort of a cabin. That is all it took for Bob to take down an old barn and build his first of several lake cabins. For over a decade at the lake he enjoyed boating, BBQing, skiing, and sailing.

Another passion for Bob was golf. Although he loved to hunt, fish, play and coach football and baseball it was golf that he often remarked was a real curse to him. He even said it cost him 80,000 because of the time he spent playing golf in a year and not at work or when he wasn’t playing he was always thinking about it. Golf was eventually replaced with tennis, which Bob thought was a much cheaper pastime.

When real estate dropped in the early 1980s Bob went into semi-retirement and managed the family's 58 rental units. In his later years he got back into real estate and rentals, finally retiring just after he turned 80. Bob also had an appliance store and a used car lot during his career.

Bob will always be remembered for his catch phrases, “That’s a lot of steaks and booze,” “Stay the course,” and “What the hell is going on here.” Rest in peace Bob, Dad, and Grandpa.

Bob is survived by three sons, Robert Schmidt Jr. of Lawrence, Kansas, Donald Schmidt (Cheryl Baldwin) Eudora, KS and Jon Schmidt and wife Cindy of Leawood, Kansas; three daughters, Lori Schmidt of Dallas, Texas, Christa Walter of Hays and Melissa Schmidt of Paola, Kansas; grandchildren Hannah (Daniel) Brockway, Erin Schmidt (Drew Medermit), Jake (Jessica) Schmidt, Grahmm Huey, Isaac Schmidt, William Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, and Neil Walter as well as two great-grandchildren, May and Elsi Schmidt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernie and Darrell Schmidt and a sister, Jackie Schmidt.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine, Kansas. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial visitation will be Thursday 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. The family is requesting this time to be used for sharing stories and celebrating Bob.&nbsp;

Doris A. Dinkel, 85, Hays, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at Via Christi Village.

She was born October 31, 1937 in Hays, the daughter of Florence and Mary S. (Braun) Walters. 

In 1956, she graduated from Girls Catholic High School, and on June 12, 1956 she was united in marriage to Irvin A. Dinkel in Hays. They celebrated 27 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 16, 1983.

 She worked at St. Anthony Hospital and then HaysMed in central supplies, sterilizing surgical equipment and preparing surgical trays. 

Doris was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed crocheting, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, canning, and cooking. She was a people person who loved her family, friends, and time together filled with joy and laughter.

Survivors include her daughters, Lisa Perry and husband Gerald of Sparta, MO, and Joan Wellbrock and husband Leon of Victoria; three sisters, Rozine Lambertson and husband Harry of Hays, Barbara McCauley of Topeka, and Debbie Bohm of Hays;nine grandchildren, Tara Tate, Joey Dinkel and wife Julianne, Irvin Dinkel, Stephen Dinkel, Jamie Garner and husband Michael, Johnnie Perry, Auna Perry, Madison Perry, and Ashley Schmidtberger and husband Andy; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Irvin, her brother, Gary Walters and wife Alice, a son, Bill Dinkel, brother-in-law, Tom Bohm, and a great-grandson, Duke Schmidtberger.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. David Micheal officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute.

Margo L. Zinszer of Tyler, Texas passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022. She was 80 years old.

Margaret Louise was born November 23, 1941 in Duck River, Tennessee, the daughter of Fred Kenneth and Mary Ruth (Davidson) Matlock. 

In 1959, as a young woman working at a Humpty Dumpty Drive-In located in Evansville, Indiana, she met Zip, an Army paratrooper on his weekend furlough with the 101st Airborne in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Quickly, Margo and her best friend, Phyllis, arranged a double date with Zip and his Army comrade. However, as Margo frequently enjoyed telling, this double date paired Zip with Phyllis, not with her! So, fate had other plans, and Margo and Zip were married on April 16, 1960 in Parkers Settlement, Indiana. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2020. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2020.

Prior to moving to Tyler, Texas in 2018, Zip and Margo lived in Pocatello, Idaho for 31 years. In the first years of their marriage Margo was an Army wife, but was also a loving mother and a homemaker. She also worked outside the home as a saleswoman for various retail stores, then later retiring as a bank teller for US Bank in Pocatello. She enjoyed conversation and seemed to never know a stranger she didn’t like, making good friends in all the places Zip’s career and their retirement would take them. She and Zip made homes in the Kansas communities of Hays, Smith Center, Greensburg, Osborne, and Emporia, as well as Carbondale, Illinois. Upon their retirement, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Arizona camping communities where they made friendships with other retirees.

A talented quilter and seamstress, Margo was also a card player with a special fondness for “hand &amp; foot.” She and Zip also enjoyed motorcycling and camping with their children and friends in Colorado. Then later, after moving to Idaho, they were frequent visitors to Yellowstone National Park and its surrounding area of which they often described the landscape as “good-looking country.” Their love for this area took them along a road where they discovered a building lot for sale, and although Zip was not quite ready to part with his money, Margo was determined to spend her share. So, they built their Zinszer Family Cabin outside of Island Park, Idaho in 1994, a place where they loved spending their retirement summers, and making lasting memories with family and with friends. Margo will be missed by those who loved her, but we are grateful that she is now free of her struggles with pain and diabetes.

Margo is survived by her three children, daughter Kimberly Stapp and husband Gary of Tyler, Texas, son Randy Zinszer and wife Cheryl of Flower Mound, Texas, and son Shawn Zinszer and wife Kori of Jacksonville, Florida; seven grandchildren, Lacey Stapp, Taylor Stapp and wife Jessie, Riley Zinszer, Carly Zinszer, Brennan Zinszer, Dallon Zinszer, and Kelsey Zinszer; and great-grandson Luke Stapp; two sisters, Girleen Winternheimer and Dorothy Swanson, both of Wadesville, Indiana, and a brother, Eugene Matlock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hans “Zip” Zinszer, her parents, and infant brother Billy Brown Matlock.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays, where her ashes with be laid to rest next to her beloved Zip. Services are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Lewis Eugene Semmel passed away on May 22, 2023 at his home in Lamar, Colorado at the age of 85.&nbsp; He was born on January 22, 1938 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Adolf and Mary (May) Semmel.

Lewis had owned and operated Scotty’s Body Shop, was a volunteer firefighter, drove the activity bus and a regular route for Scott Community Schools in Scott City, Kansas later moving to Goddard, Kansas where he drove a regular school bus route and was a camp host at Cheney Lake.&nbsp;

He is survived by five daughters, one adopted daughter, one foster son, three siblings, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Monty and Marsha Turley and their family who provided care for Lewis for the last several years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. CST at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Don Williams officiating.

Inurnment will follow at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Jennie was born September 18, 1941, to Gus and Dorothy (Harrison) Miller.&nbsp; She grew up and attended school in Brewster. 

Jennie worked as a custodian for 23 years at Littleton High School in Littleton, Colorado. After her retirement she moved back to the Goodland area. Jennie enjoyed playing bingo, slots, word search, shopping, watching FOX News and she dearly loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her Sparks Tower Family.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death are her parents; daughter Tina Duffy; brothers Don and Willie. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Rick was a truck driver. He hauled cattle and milk. He worked in the oil field, and also cut meat. &nbsp;

He married Carol Hurt on Saturday, September 10, 1983, in Wilroads Garden, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife Carol Vandegrift of Ellinwood; son William (Jolene) Perkins of Holcomb; daughters Mandy Dusin of Corpus Christi, TX, Tina Tatman of Ellinwood, Amber (Josh) Burt of Peoria, AZ, April (Christopher) Riley of Mesa, AZ; brothers Michael (Nancy) Vandegrift of Hutchinson, Kirk (Shirley) Vandegrift of Ellinwood; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, P.K. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Kirby VanDegrift; and&nbsp; grandson Ryan Turner.

David Lynn Johnson, 62, passed away on May 23rd at the Goodland Regional Medical Center after a valiant battle with cancer. 

He was a man known for his unwavering love for the great outdoors and his fascination with technology. David's legacy as an adventurer and electronics aficionado will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. 

David was preceded in death by his father Larry, who instilled in him a love for the outdoors.

Born on March 22, 1961, in Lindsborg, KS, David's life was defined by his deep connection with nature. He found solace and joy in exploring the wonders of the world around him. Whether it was traversing rugged terrains, kayaking on peaceful waters, or stargazing under the night sky, he embraced the beauty and tranquility of the outdoors. David's passion for the natural world was infectious, and he shared countless unforgettable moments with family and friends during outdoor expeditions.

In addition to his love for the outdoors, David possessed a keen intellect and an insatiable curiosity for technology. He was an early adopter, always on the forefront of the latest advancements in the digital realm. David's expertise and passion for electronics were evident as he delved into programming languages, tinkered with pinball machines, and expertly maneuvered through the ever-changing landscape of technology. His knowledge and guidance were invaluable to those seeking his advice, and he was always willing to share his discoveries with others.

During his battle with cancer, David was supported by an incredible network of friends who rallied around him. Their unwavering support and selflessness provided him with comfort and strength during his most challenging moments. David's friends were pillars of strength, offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, and brightening his days with their presence. Their acts of kindness and camaraderie were a testament to the power of friendship and community and the family is forever grateful for their contributions.

David Johnson leaves behind a lasting legacy of adventure, innovation, and a deep appreciation for the natural world and technology. His memory will be cherished by his son Anthony (Lea), and his granddaughters Evelyn and Nora, of Colorado Springs, who were a constant source of inspiration and joy in his life. 

In remembrance of David, let us be inspired to embrace the beauty of nature, explore the world around us, and examine the ever-evolving wonders of what comes next. May his spirit live on as we carry forward his zest for life and his unwavering curiosity.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. MT on June 9, 2023 at the Goodland Cemetery to celebrate David Johnson's life and honor the legacy he leaves behind.

Lifelong Goodland, Kansas resident Lois Elaine Sieck, 84, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023 at the Goodland Regional Medical Center with her children by her side.

Lois was born on December 12, 1938 in Goodland, Kansas to Oren Milton and Pearl Marie (Gernhart) Parish.&nbsp; She was one of three children.&nbsp; She had an older sister, Lila Mary and a younger brother, Lewis Oren.&nbsp; They lived on a farm south of Ruleton, Kansas.

 Lois attended eight years at Ruleton Consolidated School and then four years at Goodland High School, where she graduated from in 1956.

On June 3, 1956, she married her high school sweetheart, Ray Henry Sieck from Edson, Kansas.&nbsp; To this union of love, four children would be born, Tony Ray, Kristi Kaye, Todd Loy and Karma Jo. 

She spent most of her life helping her folks and Ray on the farm, while raising their children.&nbsp; She enjoyed her nine years as a tourist information counselor for the state of Kansas.

Lois served six years as a Northwest Kansas Regional Medical Center board member and Officer.&nbsp; She was active in the United Methodist Church where she served on the United Methodist Trustees, pastor parish, finance committee and in United Methodist Church Circle Five. Lois had been active in 4-H leadership, Red Hatters and Goodland P.E.O.&nbsp;

After losing her husband in 1995 at the young age of fifty-seven, she organized and led a singles group that gathered twice a week for six years.

Lois loved being a wife, mom, grandmother and a friend.&nbsp; She enjoyed many hobbies including designing floral arrangements, flower gardening, writing poetry, cooking, baking, and playing cards.

Preceding her in death were her parents Oren and Pearl, husband Ray, son Todd, brother Lew and a sister Lila.

Lois is survived by her children Karma (Greg) Keirns of Eloy, Arizona, Kristi (Gary) Clabo of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Tony (Rhonda) Sieck of Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Christopher Clabo of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hunter Clabo of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Derek Keirns of Scottsdale, Arizona and Darby Keirns of Phoenix, Arizona. She is survived by two stepgrandchildren, Patrick Drennan of Wichita, Kansas and Andrew (Amanda) Drennan of Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; She is also survived by five stepgreat-grandchildren, Carson, Jackson, Brooke, Blake and Cameron.

A Celebration of Life Service for Lois will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. MST at the Goodland United Methodist Church with Pastor Younghwan Won officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Wade Ray Dyer, 45, of Dorrance, Kansas, died on Sunday, May 28, 2023, in Dorrance, Kansas, due to an unfortunate auto accident.

Wade was born on April 26, 1978, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Denny Ray and Jan Marie (Ehrlich) Dyer.&nbsp; He moved to Dorrance, Kansas, at age five and made it home for the duration of his life.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Wilson High School with the class of 1996.&nbsp; After high school he completed the John Deere training program at the Garden City Community College where he also received his associate's degree.&nbsp; 

He worked as a diesel and agricultural equipment mechanic in Ellsworth since graduating.&nbsp; 

He enjoyed restoring vehicles, including his 1951 Chevy pickup and his IROC Camaro.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and hanging out with his longtime friends at the Dorrance American Legion.

He is survived by his parents Denny and Jan Dyer of Dorrance, Kansas; three sons, Fallon R. Dyer, Cameron M. Dyer and Owen L. Dyer, all of Lincoln, Kansas, and sister Jessie Rose and husband Cody of Dorrance, Kansas.&nbsp; Wade is also survived by two nieces, a nephew, and two great-nephews.

Cremation has been selected by the family.&nbsp; The family will have a memorial gathering to celebrate Wade’s life at a later date.&nbsp;

Jesse Lee Hockersmith, 52, of Victoria, KS, died Friday, May 26, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS. He was born December 8, 1970, in Colby, KS, to Terry and Betty (Schwarz) Hockersmith. 

Jesse graduated from Oakley High School in 1989. He then attended Northwest Kansas Area Vo-Tech, graduating in 1990, as an auto body technician. Jesse married Primrose Lea Avila on August 10, 1991, in Oakley, KS. They had four children.

He worked at AAA Mobile Glass and Body Shop, G &amp; S Construction, and at Hays Chevrolet (FKA Clay Chevrolet and Paul MacDonald Chevrolet) for 24 years. He was artistic, creative, hardworking, and able to fix anything. He built a model train and RC car racetrack room, mini choppers, patented his own auto body tool, rebuilt cars, especially old Suburbans, and motorcycles. Jesse enjoyed all his children's activities, telling stories and jokes with his family and friends, riding motorcycles, racing go carts and RC cars/planes, shooting guns, rockets, and fireworks. He is survived by wife Primrose Hockersmith; children Wheaton (Aspen) Hockersmith, Sienna Hockersmith, Rylee Hockersmith and Vance Hockersmith; parents; sister Melanie Hockersmith; sister-in-law Alicia (Dalin) Unruh; brother-in-law Frank Avila; nephews Bryce Fortin and Ryan (Robyn) Unruh; nieces Cheyann Fortin, Karen (Cliff) Leonhardt and Jeana Unruh; and great-nephews Gabe, Ryker, and Tristyn Leonhardt. Preceded in death by in-laws Guadalupe and Sylvanna (Wassemiller) Avila; grandparents Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz and Willis and Elta Louise (Brooks) Hockersmith; and nephew Jacob Lane Unruh. Joy Forster Crawford Birdwell, 93, of Natoma, Kansas, went to her heavenly home, May 28, 2023. She grew up the youngest of 11 children born to Ray and Livona Dudley Forster, August 27, 1929 in Cawker City, Kansas. 

When Joy was a young child during the Dirty '30s, she was overcome with dust pneumonia and by God’s grace recovered. 

During this time the family moved to Kirwin and she attended school in Glen Elder until her sophomore year when her father went to work in the Navy Yard during WWII at Port Orchard, Washington. It was here that Joy met her future husband. She came back to Kansas during her junior year of high school.

Joy gave her heart to Jesus at nine years of age at a Christian Church and went forward for salvation to the hymn, “Just As I Am”. That hymn remained a favorite for the rest of her life. 

She graduated from high school in Glen Elder, and went on to get her teaching certificate and taught grades 1-8 in a country school seven miles north of Gorham, for one year. She taught grades 4-6 in Ionia the next year. Then the guy she met in Washington, George Crawford, became her husband.

The couple moved to Natoma in 1957. To this union were born five children. After George died in an oil field accident in 1987, Joy met and married Bob Birdwell, September 9, 1989. They were married 33 years. They loved Colorado and built a cabin in Red Feather Lakes, where they lived for 24 years. Their home was the vacation spot for most of the family.

Grandma Joy always had a spirit of ADVENTURE, loved to travel, and taught the “Grands” how to enJOY life. We played many games of rummy, dominoes, Mexican Train, and Rook. Probably the most important lesson she taught during those games was how to lose!

She had a quick sense for words and was a whiz with crossword puzzles. She was clever and enjoyed a good poem, rhyme, or limerick. She always had a love of books, especially the Bible, and would read it through every year.

Grandma Joy loved cooking for her family and always made her trademark homemade ice cream ready and waiting to be enjoyed. She taught us how to fish and shared her love of hiking, picnics, and nature. On her 70th birthday she became the proud owner of her first ATV. She was so pleased when the family came to ride the trails with her in the Rockies.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband George Crawford; all 10 Forster family siblings: George, Carmen, Gertie, Mildred, Dudley, Irene, Dot, Betty, Jim, and Margie; and a grandson Justin Crawford. 

She is survived by her husband Robert Birdwell of Natoma; children: Steve Crawford of West Virginia, Julie Fulks and husband Steve of Natoma, Greg Crawford of Zurich, Jeff Crawford and wife Linda of Natoma, Karla Crawford of Natoma; Steve Birdwell of San Bruno, California, Shara&nbsp;Birdwell Brinkley of Phoenix, Arizona, Sandy Birdwell Kersting and husband Dave of Papillion, Nebraska, and Bob Birdwell and wife Karen of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Together Bob and Joy have nine children, 22 grandchildren and 32 and counting great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and counting.

Joyce 'Joy' Beth Birdwell

John Joseph Landauer, Jr., age 92, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis.

John was born February 12, 1931, on the family farm to Frank and Zelma (Brown) Landauer. He married Wilma Kleweno and they later divorced. They had two sons, Barry and John “Bo”.

John graduated from Ellis High School in 1949 and joined the United States Navy after graduation. After he was discharged, he returned home to help with the family farm and raise cattle. John then made his way to Independence, Missouri working for Sears where he was a store manager for 25 years. After his retirement from Sears, he returned to Ellis and continued his work on the family farm.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a life member of the Hays VFW. He enjoyed hunting, socializing, and playing cards at the Ellis Golf Club.

John is survived by one brother, Roger Landauer and wife Pat of Salina, KS; two sisters, Adeline Henderson of Ellis and Carol Evans of Garland, TX; two grandchildren, Rachel Landauer of Merriam, KS and Ryan Landauer of Omaha, NE; as well as four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded by his parents, Frank and Zelma; two sons, Barry Landauer and John “Bo” Landauer; two brothers, Gilbert and Milfred; and an infant sister, Linda Landauer.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. with a combined vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Friday visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time at the church as well.

Robert Edward Tamney

Robert P. Ebersole, 92, Leawood, Kansas died May 31, 2023.

Bob was born December 17, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Paul and Mildred Ebersole and grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa, through his elementary school and high school years. He attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a business degree in 1953 and a law degree, Juris Doctor, in 1957. A year later he completed an M.B.A degree at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was admitted to the practice of law in both Kansas and Iowa.

Between the two Iowa degrees, Bob served as a U.S. Air Force Personnel and Administrative Officer. He was a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Judge Advocate Division.

After this time he started his family with then-wife, Marilyn Mermis. They had three children, Amy, Andrew, and Alec.

His career in law, banking, and insurance began as a cashier at the First National Bank in Hays, Kansas, in 1960. He became president and CEO of that bank in 1964. During his career there, the First National became one of the prominent banks in western Kansas by leading the area in data-processing conversion. Bob also developed a six-story bank building with rental offices and a private dining club.

While in Hays, Bob was an active member of the Kansas Bankers Association and chaired various KBA committees. He was a graduate of the American Bankers Association School of Automation and the ABA Commercial Lending School, as well as a graduate of the American Institute of Banking with a Graduate Certificate in Investments. He also was a member of a People to People delegation from Kansas banks to Eastern European countries.

Along the way, Bob taught economics and finance in the evening division at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. He also taught numerous banking courses in both Hays and Great Bend, Kansas, and lectured at the School of Basic Banking in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was a member and past president of the Board of Trustees.

In Hays Bob was a member and past president of the Hays Rotary Club and served as treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of Hadley Memorial Hospital.

Bob left Hays in 1974 to become active in the Life Insurance Company of Kansas, headquartered in Wichita. He had organized the company’s Board of Directors in 1970 and served as board president before moving there to become active on a daily basis. In his 11 years the company became the top bank credit life insurance company in the state.

On December 5, 1975, he married the love of his life, Doris Leiker. Bob and Doris enjoyed 47 years of life together.

In 1978 the Life Insurance Company of Kansas was purchased by a corporation that also owned National Savings Life, and in 1984 that company transferred Bob to its headquarters in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as president and CEO.

Bob and Doris subsequently established homes in Destin, Florida and Leawood, Kansas, following his retirement.

Bob’s hobbies included snow skiing and golf. Bob was an avid tennis player, winning the 65 year and over Tennessee Doubles Championship! He enjoyed going out for a glass or two of wine with Doris and friends.
