Joan Gallion, 92, of Grinnell, died Saturday, April 29, 2023. She was born August 3, 1930, in Quinter, KS, to Charles and Leona (Boston) Johnson. 

She married Wilfred Gallion on November 26, 1953, at her parent’s home in Gove, KS. 

Joan graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1953 and taught school for a few years. She also worked as a school secretary for many years. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilfred and brothers Dean and Dale Johnson. She is survived by her sons Mike Gallion and Stan Gallion; daughters Janet Gallion and Kathy (Roger) Marston; granddaughter Stephanie (Kelby) Bodley; great-grandson Evan Bodley; and sister-in-law Leona Gallion. Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the Grinnell Township Cemetery, followed by refreshments at the Grinnell Senior Center.

Curtis Dean Deutscher, age 69, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at his home in Ellis, Kansas. Curtis was born March 16, 1954, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Carl H. and Amy E. (Moore) Deutscher.

Curtis attended school in Ellis, graduating in 1973. While in high school he worked one summer for his brother, Gary, at his Texaco station. Following graduation, he worked in construction. Curtis worked at Travenol for 15 years for Walmart. He retired August 31, 2022, working 30 years for EnerSys.

Curtis loved fishing, singing Elvis’s songs, and his dog, Rascal. He was an avid reader and enjoyed putting puzzles together. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis.

Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Carl on Nov. 5, 1984, his mother, Amy on December 18, 1985, and brother-in-law, George E. Stewart on December 12, 1986. Surviving are his brother Gary E. Charles Edward Disque, 98, died April 28, 2023, at River Bend Senior Living, Great Bend. He was born June 21, 1924, in Claflin, to Adam and Margaret (Radenberg) Disque.

Charles attended country school district #75 and then graduated from Claflin High School in 1943.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He served during WWII in the U.S. Army Ordinance Alaska Defense.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a farmer and a carpenter, farming and doing construction work in Ellsworth and Barton Counties.&nbsp;

Charles was a member of Claflin United Methodist Church where he had served on the pastor-parish relations committee and was a church historian and delegate. He was also active in the Claflin Methodist Men's Club, the Masonic Lodge #331, the Claflin Housing Board and the Barton County Historical Society, and was a former Cub Scout Leader and secretary for the Claflin Co-op board.

On September 30, 1951, he married Verna Leona Ehly in Claflin. After 68 blessed years together, she died on July 29, 2019.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Sellens and husband David of Olathe, and Corrine Clark and husband Jim of Hays; two grandchildren, Jaclyn and Derek; and great-granddaughter, Kiran; three brothers, Herman Disque of Stafford, Harvey Disque of Salina, and Walter Disque and wife Joyce of Claflin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Martin, Clarence, Marlin, and Edgar Disque, and six sisters, Edna, Grace, and Velma Disque, Mabel Flickinger, Aline Howser, and Leona Welch.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 4th, 2023, at Claflin United Methodist Church, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.

He enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, attending county fairs, and craft fairs, camping, and dancing.&nbsp;&nbsp;He especially loved his rocking chair.

Survivors include&nbsp; three brothers, Melvin G. Jacobs, Great Bend, Kansas, Paul A. Jacobs (Lori), Great Bend, Kansas, and Patrick L. Jacobs (Sally), Rush Center, Kansas; sister Diana Lynn Bakeberg (Randy), Gastonia, North Carolina; eight nephews and nieces, Tyson Jacobs (Tami), Aaron Jacobs (Jennifer), Andrew Jacobs (Amanda), Alex Jacobs, Austin Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Katrina Jacobs, and Megan Jacobs; and seven great-nephews and nieces.

Dale Eugene Appl, age 90, passed away on April 29, 2023, at his home in Leoti, Kansas. He was born on May 3, 1932, to Martinus and Violet (Elder) Appl in Leoti, Kansas. 

He was a farmer and rancher as well as a past member of the Leoti Lions Club and the Antique Car Club. He loved farming as much as he loved flying and showing everyone his farm from the air. Anyone who knew him knew that he was both candid and ornery.&nbsp;

On March 30, 1952, Dale Married Dorothea J. (Van Winkle) Appl in Dodge City. She survives.&nbsp;

Dale is survived by his wife, three daughters, Julie Carpenter of Leoti, Kansas, Trish Brunswig of WaKeeney, Kansas, Kathy Graff of Neodesha, Kansas, seven grandchildren Cole and Bridgette Carpenter, Shala and Kevan Steele, Tyler and Cheyann McClayland, Lacey and Alex Detwiler, Cara and Josh Gunderson, Ty and Courtney Brunswig, Tia and Logan Mattheyer, and 15 great-grandchildren.

&nbsp; Patricia Grimes (Pat), 92, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. Pat was born October 31st, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri to Lucy (Mitchell) Todd and Charles E. Todd.&nbsp; Her family lived in a two-story duplex on Spruce Street.&nbsp; She was born at home. She had a four-year-old sister, Peggy Jane, anxiously waiting her arrival. She began kindergarten at the age of four at the Ashland school.&nbsp; With not having 8th grade, she graduated from high school at the age of 16.&nbsp; She graduated in 1947 and was voted, “The Most Bashful” by her classmates.&nbsp;

Her mom was a homemaker and her dad was a streetcar driver and later a city bus driver on the streets of Kansas City.&nbsp; She remembers getting a dime each week and either going to the movies or enjoying a chocolate malt.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She enrolled in Baker University and earned a bachelor of arts degree in children’s literature.&nbsp; After graduating, she taught for six years in the Kansas City area teaching elementary kids. She spent a year in Germany during this time through the Army’s special services. She and other gals her age would plan and participate in activities for the soldiers stationed there.&nbsp; This trip gave her a wealth of information and experiences that she would treasure throughout her life! In 1957, she met a senior year dental student on the park bench near the apartment building on the Plaza where they both lived with friends.&nbsp; They were married October 21st, 1958 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Looking for a dental practice brought them to Smith Center, their home together for almost 65 years.&nbsp; Bill practiced dentistry for over 50 years, with Pat serving as the secretary many of those years. Pat was a 53-year member of the PEO sisterhood and also enjoyed playing bridge through the years with couples and was also a member of the Entre Nous Club.&nbsp; These ladies began the Old Settler’s Day’s event known as, “The Prairie Dog Saloon.”&nbsp; It provided entertainment for the community that day with singing and skits while raising money for worthwhile causes. She and “Papa Bill” were big supporters of all their kids and later grandkids’ activities.&nbsp; From sports events to dance recitals, they were there!&nbsp; Pat was proceeded in death by her parents Charlie and Lucy Todd, her sister Peggy Short, husband Bill Grimes and grandson Chet William Kuhlmann. Those left to remember and cherish all their many memories are her children Gary Grimes, Smith Center, Annalee Ratliff (Alvie), Athol and Meribeth Lambert (Clark) of Smith Center. Four grandchildren:&nbsp; Zach Lambert of Olathe, Kansas, Sammy Gleason, (Tanner) of Riley, Kansas, Ethan Kuhlmann, (Jill) of Osborne, Kansas and Grant Lambert of Nashville, Tennessee. Seven great-granddaughters have all enjoyed time with “Granny Pat.” They are Cruz Lambert, Tessa, Layla, Luxa and Livi Gleason, and Baylin and Emmie Kuhlmann. A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Smith Center United Methodist Church, 301 E. Kansas Ave., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen.&nbsp; Inurnment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS.&nbsp;

Proud farmer, cattleman, trader, family man and devoted friend of many - “Loved people and conversation. Likes to sell knowledge but hard to find a buyer”. Gary O. Battles, 82, peacefully passed away in his home “up on the hill” in Aurora, CO on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Gary was born on February 10, 1941, in Maquoketa, IA the son of Lynn Frederick and Helen (Gisel) Battles. He attended and graduated from Elwood Consolidated School in 1959 and graduated from Wisconsin State University-Platteville in 1963. His love of farming and cattle started on the family farm that has been in operation since 1848. He started his first cow herd at an early age and began his own feeding operation at 15 years old. Gary was a master showman and his eye for spotting exceptional cattle was evident. He showed grand champions at the Jackson County Fair a total of four times and his prized steer “Toby” won many other regional competitions including winning the Quad County championship where it was rated as one of the best in the history of the show. In college, he boastfully challenged a lone girl in class to sit up front with the boys. That girl who never shied away from his boastful chatter picked up her books and sat right next to him. She later became his wife of 57 years. Gary married Joyce (Cushman) Battles on June 13, 1965.

Gary in his true romantic ways convinced his young bride on their honeymoon to travel west, where he surprisingly took her to a feedlot operation that he wanted to see on the drive. Together they followed his cattlemen dreams first to Ottumwa, IA and then to Garden City, KS where he served as a fat cattle buyer. In 1969, he was hired as the general manager for Fairleigh Feed Yards in Scott City, KS and remained there through 1989. He did independent feed yard consulting for a couple of years while also buying fat cattle for Hy Plains Packing Company of Dodge City, KS. In 1992, he worked his last decade at Ranger Feeders in Dighton, KS and retired to Aurora, CO to be closer to family in 2003. Gary loved western Kansas and the vast “wall to wall blue sky”. He commented that “the wind is the sign of change” and as he drove up to the feedlot, he would remark that’s the “smell of money.” Gary, who never played football before, joined the UW-Platteville Pioneer football team and earned his nickname “Hardrock” for his hard-nosed play. His first sporting love was baseball, where he played and lettered all four years at UW-Platteville. His baseball playing style mirrored the way he operated in life: hard-nosed, fast, meticulous in detail and playing the right way. Gary coached his kids in softball and baseball the exact same way. He served in the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Reserve Corps from 1964 to 1974. He was a proud member of the Kansas Livestock association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. In 2020, he was honored by the Kansas Livestock Association as a member of the 50-Year Club. In retirement, he started his second career as a very involved “Old Grandad” Gary. He loved following and hearing about his grandkids' pursuits. Superfan Gary became known for his unique ability to insert himself in any activity especially while watching or hearing about his grandkids sporting events. While his disease took his ability away to walk, it never took his voice nor his sharp wit. He was a master at finding a way to connect and communicate with people. He enjoyed talking to family and friends on his “idiot machines” (known to us as a computer and cell phone). His trademark was handing out $2 bills, “if you never spend it, then you will never go broke.” Gary created his own business card which he proudly shared. If you met Gary even just once, you would never forget him. Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Calista (Lynn) Wright of Aurora, CO and their son Challis (Haley) and son Maverick and daughter Channing (Tyrell) Hansen with great-grandson arriving early fall; Candice Battles of Aurora, CO and her son Cyler and daughter Candra; two sons, Cort Battles of Lone Tree, CO and his sons Cian and Finn and Cale (Tess) Battles of Verona, WI and their three sons Graeden, Griffin and Granton. He is also survived by his Cushman family of in-laws which includes four brothers and six sisters.

He was preceded in death by Faun Cushman (father-in-law), Phyllis Cushman (mother-in-law) and two brothers-in-law. He was also preceded in death by his father (Lynn), mother (Helen), brother (Lynn Frederick). Several additional special people came into his life as his disease progressed. Our family is indebted to Doctor Stephanie Kraft, who was an exceptional doctor that showed great patience and care for Gary. Connie, Jose, Susan, Shelly and Lisa were not only Gary's caregivers, but people who dad loved to see every day. So many people were willing to help Gary and cared about him. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 27th from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Aurora, CO at the Heritage Eagle Bend Clubhouse (23155 East Heritage Parkway). An additional celebration will take place in Platteville, WI later this summer. A private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Platteville. Gary was very specific that he did not want any flowers at his celebration of life. “Trees, plants and flowers are all weeds.”

Alberta Fay Douglas, 86, passed away April 28, 2023, in Great Bend. She was born March 9, 1937, at Bazine, KS, at the family farm home, to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Koch) Foos. She attended Bazine Grade School and graduated from Bazine High School in 1955.

&nbsp;After graduating she moved to Great Bend, KS, where she met and married Gaylon Clayton on April 7, 1957, at Bazine. Gaylon passed away on October 1, 1960, due to a car accident. They had one daughter, Charlotte (Clayton) Myers. She then married John “Max” Douglas on June 17, 1962. He passed away December 18, 2007.

&nbsp;Alberta worked at Schlumberger Well Services, Marlette Mobile Homes, McDonald Tank Company, Social and Rehabilitation Services, KETCH (Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped), Saint Francis Community Services, Great Bend Municipal Court and was co-owner of the Kitchen Cupboard in Great Bend. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was a Camp Fire Girls group leader and Camp Fire Director for Camp Chu-Wa-Ni for many years and dearly loved it. 

She loved to watch her KU Basketball games and the Kansas City Chiefs play football. Alberta especially enjoyed family dinners and get togethers. The family enjoyed her fried chicken, homemade ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.

Survivors include her daughter Charlotte (Clayton) Myers and husband Randy of Great Bend; son David Douglas and wife Connie of Cozad, Neb.; stepchildren Debbie Gartner and husband Frank of Dublin, Calif. and Scott Douglas and wife Carla of Brentwood, Calif.; grandchildren Nathan Myers and wife Brianna of Hays, Travis Myers of Great Bend, Denton Douglas and wife Sheena of Tecumseh, Kan; stepgrandchildren, Alesha Gartner of Dublin, Calif. and her partner Jorge Barailar and Matthew Gartner of Sacramento, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Bentley Douglas and Xander Myers; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brayden Barailar and Gavin Gartner; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Surviving siblings are Clarence Foos and wife Ethel of Bazine; and sister in law, Enid Foos of Lincoln, Neb. 

She was preceded in death by her parents;  her husbands Gaylon Clayton and Max Douglas; her sister Helen Schaben; and her brothers Floyd Foos and Leonard Foos.

&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Tim Bever presiding. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to the First United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Edith “Edie” May (Miller) Siemers, 89, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023 at Russell Regional Hospital.

Edie was born July 26, 1933 at the Georgetown Hospital in Washington D.C., one of five children born to Thomas L. and Alice L. (Chapman) Miller. 

She grew up in Arlington, Virginia and graduated from Holy Trinity High School before attending the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing-Baltimore to get her nursing degree.

Through a chance introduction from their siblings, Edie and Delvin “Del” Siemers met and were later married on January 18, 1958 at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia. They moved to Del’s hometown of Luray, KS, sight-unseen to Edie, where they raised their three children, Tom, Margo, and Eric. When the kids were grown, Edie and Del moved to Mesa, AZ for a brief time before choosing to make their home in Russell, KS. She lost Del on August 10, 2007, just shy of their 50th&nbsp;anniversary.

Edie was a registered nurse (RN) and was proud of her career, which began at the Arlington Hospital in Virginia and continued for nearly 40 more years in Russell, where she worked in the office of Dr. Earl Merkel, Dr. Jerald Starkey, and others. 

She was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Guild, American Legion Auxiliary of Luray, VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Russell, and Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

Edie was an avid reader who couldn’t wait to share a good book with a friend or the hospital auxiliary, and she never met a jigsaw or crossword puzzle she couldn’t tackle. A skilled seamstress and quilter, she lovingly assembled quilts for her children as wedding gifts and crocheted blankets for her grandchildren upon arrival. The baby blankets, affectionately dubbed “poke-hole-blankies” by Edie’s grandchildren, were found particularly useful to clutch or cuddle (sometimes while sucking an intertwined thumb). 

Some of Edie’s favorite things were lilacs in the springtime, the feel of soft velvet, the chimes of her clock, organized photo albums, shopping and eating at Taco Shop with her daughter, watching Tom Selleck TV shows, and the comfort of her glider rocker and Birkenstock sandals. She collected stamps and the annual, official White House Christmas ornaments, and she was especially interested in the history and politics out of Washington, DC, having grown up in that area. She loved reading her monthly South Dakota Magazine and learning about her son’s adopted home state. Edie was able to appreciate the little things, and always saw the best in others.&nbsp;

Edie’s surviving family includes her daughter Margo Ochs (Kevin) of Russell, Kansas and her sons Tom Siemers (Cindy) of Topeka, Kansas, and Eric Siemers (Jodi) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as well as her sister Ruth Walston of Rock Port, Texas and her eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild (plus another she was eager to greet later this year).

Edie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Del, along with her brother John Miller, and sisters Teresa Siemers and Nancy Broyhill. 

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:15 p.m., Tuesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.

Duane Raymond Gasper, 72, Hays, died Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Ellis Good Samaritan Society after a long battle with diabetes.

He was born on October 4, 1950, in Beloit to Raymond and LaVerna (Henke) Gasper and grew up on the family farm near Tipton. 

He graduated from Tipton High School in 1968 and from Kansas State University in 1972. He got his start in business in college while working at the first Vista Drive In, then a new and popular hamburger restaurant in Manhattan that is still going strong today. 

On Nov. 29, 1975, he married Jaxine Bushyhead in Jay, Okla., and they made their home in Grove, Okla., for most of their married life. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Grove and the Knights of Columbus.

For several years Duane worked as a custom wheat harvester and in retail business before starting a longtime career as an over-the-road truck driver.He delivered merchandise to 48 states over a 20-year span before his retirement. Duane loved watching sports on TV and grew to cheer for Oklahoma athletics while living there, but he always remained an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, the KC Royals, and everything Kansas State.&nbsp; After his wife's death in 2011, he moved to Hays to be nearer to family. He later moved to the Ellis Good Samaritan Society, where he enjoyed playing cards and bingo and visiting with staff and fellow residents.

Survivors include his two sisters, Barb Turner and friend Dave Marshall of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Diane Gasper-O'Brien and husband Rex of Hays; three nephews, Travis Turner and wife Kim, Drew O'Brien, and Brody Pfannenstiel; and his wife's siblings, Jack Bushyhead Jr., Lou Ella Weirich, Charlotte Earnest, Leona Forrester and Sarah Watts.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, parents-in-law, Jack and Freda Bushyhead; a nephew, Reid O'Brien; and brothers-in-law Rick Turner, John Bushyhead and Jesse Bushyhead.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays, with Father Damian Richards and Father Dana Clark officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the church.

Recitation of the Rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in Duffield Cemetery in Jay, Okla.

David S. Mora, 81, of Norton, passed away April 24, 2023, with his wife by his side. He was born December 29, 1941, in Walsenburg, Colo., to Ysmel and Beatriz (Martinez) Mora.

Dave grew up in Adams City, Colo., and was a 1962 graduate of Adams City High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during Vietnam and served for two years. Dave married Sue Ahl in 1991 at the new chapel at Heritage Square in Golden, Colo., it was the first wedding held there.

He did concrete work for 23 years before he began setting ceramic tile, he did this until 2016. In his spare time, he loved hunting, fishing, playing basketball and driving around the south side of the Norton Reservoir. Dave was a member of the American Legion for 44 years and was active in the Norton Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sue of the home and daughter, Tonya (Beau) Beauprez of Watkins, Colo.

The family has chosen cremation with services to be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norton Immanuel Lutheran Church and sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Donnie May Verhoeff, 83, of Collinsville, Okla., (formerly of Grinnell) passed away on April 26, 2023, in Tulsa, Okla., at St. John Medical Center after suffering a massive stroke. She was born on June 12, 1939, in Sallisaw, Okla. Her parents were Paul and Opal Regagnon. She had two brothers: Thomas Henry and Daniel Regagnon and three sisters: Peggy Doris (Peg) Hart, Paulette (Polly) Hettinger and Diana (Pooch) Beckley. While in high school in Hays, she met her soul mate Sherman Verhoeff who was attending Hays Community College. They were married on Nov. 7, 1957, and moved to Grinnell where Sherman’s parents lived. They soon acquired their ranch in Grinnell where they farmed and raised Charolais cattle for over 40 years. Donnie and Sherman had two daughters while living in Grinnell, Debbora and Sharon. Both girls grew up on the farm and attended school in Grinnell. Debbora gave them two grandsons and Sharon gave them three grandsons and two granddaughters. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. After many years of farm life, the couple retired to Grove, Okla., where they lived for about 10 years until 2008 when they moved to Collinsville, Okla., to be with Debbora and her son, Jake Allen. Donnie and Debbora opened a beading store in nearby Owasso and were there daily teaching and making beaded jewelry. She was active and living on her own for four years after Sherman's death. Donnie is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Opal Regagnon, her husband Sherman Verhoeff and her two brothers, Thomas Henry and Daniel Regagnon. He completed high school at Leavenworth high school, then attended and graduated with a BA from Pittsburg State University. He later completed his MPA at the University of Kansas. His life work was with the state of Kansas. He retired as warden of the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his son and daughter-in-law, William and Christa Nye and grandson Samuel, as well as his brother, Herb Nye. 

He was preceded by his sister Ruth Bickley as well as his parents.

Graveside services will be held at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS in early June. He was a 6th generation Mason and was also a previous chairman of the Kansas Lottery Commission.

Harold John Nye

Dennis Eugene DeYoung, age 66, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at his home.

Dennis
 was born July 11, 1956, to Stanley Calvin and Betty Jean (Osborn) 
DeYoung in Plainville, Kansas.  He married Diane Elizabeth Geist on 
August 17, 1984, in Hays, Kansas.  She preceded him in death May 2, 2017.

He
 was a self-employed heavy equipment operator in the land field and 
oilfield industry.  In the late '70s and early '80s, he worked for Pan-Am
 Construction in Africa, Liberia and Kenya operating heavy equipment.  
Dennis was a United States Army Veteran, and a member of the American 
Legion.  He enjoyed fishing, watching the OU Sooners, and especially the
 LA Rams.

He is survived by a son, Calvin DeYoung of 
Damar, Kansas; daughter Renee DeYoung, Great Bend, KS; three sisters, 
Terri (John) Richardson, Clairmont, NC; Janice (Dennis) Craven, Wichita,
 KS; and Janet (Mike) Bruna, Plainville, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant daughter, Elizabeth, and nephew, Adam Bruna.

Steven L. Weber, 66, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday, April 24, 2023.&nbsp; Steven was born September 28, 1956, in Hays, KS to Lawrence J. and Betina (Kinderknect) Weber.&nbsp; He graduated from Great Bend High School and was a property manager in the Hutchinson area.&nbsp; He married Terri L. Ediger in Hutchinson.&nbsp; Steven enjoyed the outdoors and spent is free time hunting, fishing and golfing.&nbsp; &nbsp;He had been the president of the Central Kansas Landlord Association. Steven
 is survived by his mother, Betina; wife, Terri; six children, Scott 
(Megan Weber, Kenton Weber, Kyle (Nicole) Weber, Jessica (Mike) Carroll,
 Sara Daugherty and Sierra (Ben) Beckman; six grandchildren; three 
sisters, Wanda Weber, Connie (Brett Eulert) Weber and Marilyn (Alan) 
Selle. He is preceded by his father; and brother, Alan Weber. Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. &nbsp;

M. Andrew “Andy” Phillips, 56, passed away from cancer on December 13, 2022, at home in Denver, Colorado.

Andy was born February 4, 1966, in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Goodland High School in 1984 and graduated from Northwest
 Kansas Vocational Technical College in 1986.&nbsp;

On July 13, 1985, he and Jennifer McKnight were married.&nbsp; They moved 
to Denver in 1986 where he worked for Carroll &amp; Lange until the 
owners retired. He worked for Manhart for a short time before joining 
and finding a home with the Redland.&nbsp; He was an active member and leader
 of the Denver area Scouting community.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Andy is survived by his daughter Gessica Phillips and grandson Nosyah
 Phillips, his son Mathew (Maria) Phillips, Mother Peggy Phillips, and 
sister Amanda (Chris) Ross.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jennifer (McKnight) Phillips, 
father Martin Phillips, grandparents Paul &amp; Grace Phillips, and 
Grandmother Joan Masden.

Grace Nadine (Tuttle) Schlegel, age 85, passed away April 24, 2023, at the Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, KS.&nbsp; Grace was born September 6, 1937, in Rozel, KS, to Louis and Lucy Jane (Countryman) Tuttle.&nbsp; As a young child, Grace grew up on the family farm across the drive from her grandmother, Ada Tuttle.&nbsp; 

Many happy memories were made spending one on one time with her grandma and playing with cousins when they came to visit.&nbsp; Grace
 attended school in Rozel until her parents bought a small farm in 
Hodgeman County, east of Jetmore, where her brother Harry was born. 
Grace graduated from Jetmore High School and attended Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; She and Wesley “Pete” Schlegel were married on February 12, 1956, in Jetmore, KS.&nbsp; Pete often told the story of how he picked his wife up when she was walking the streets in Jetmore.&nbsp; To this union three daughters were born, Jan, Pat and Jo.&nbsp; The girls were raised on the family farm southwest of Ness City.&nbsp; Pete passed away on Christmas Day, 2014.&nbsp; 

Grace had a strong faith that defined who she was, and she passed that faith on to her family.&nbsp; She was a member of the United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She was involved in United Methodist Women at the local and district levels.&nbsp; She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and attended Bible Study Groups.&nbsp; Grace looked forward to the days when she worked at the United Methodist Thrift Store.&nbsp; She enjoyed working with the other volunteers and meeting the customers that came in the store.&nbsp; Grace’s
 family is very grateful to those who recognized she was failing, but 
continued to have patience with her, helping her to stay involved with 
the Thrift Store for as long as she did.

First a homemaker, but never one to sit idle, Grace kept busy with other organizations as well.&nbsp; As a member of the Tri-Circle Jaynes Extension Unit, she held various offices and was involved with many projects.&nbsp; When the unit chose to disband, the ladies continued to meet monthly to sew lap blankets for residents of Cedar Village.&nbsp; Grace was presented with one of the blankets that she had helped sew, when she moved to Cedar Village.

Grace was an accomplished seamstress.&nbsp; She
 was always up for a challenging project and made countless wedding 
dresses, bridesmaid dresses, cheerleading uniforms, men’s suit coats and
 anything else that might be asked of her.&nbsp; Her daughters were blessed to each have a one of a kind wedding dress, made with love.&nbsp; Grace
 made sure that each of her daughters, grandkids and many nieces and 
nephews learned the basics of sewing. Many times the house on the farm 
would be full of girls and sewing machines.&nbsp; Grace, the 4-H sewing leader, would move from one girl to the next instilling in them her knowledge and love for sewing.&nbsp; She
 enjoyed getting to know each “student” and they would finish off a 
sewing session with her freshly baked chocolate chip cookies or Kingla.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Pete, her younger brother Harry and her son-in-law Jake Rider.&nbsp; Survivors
 include Jan Rider, Jo (Neil) Pfannenstiel, Ness City, Pat Schlegel 
(A.J. Bosco), New York City; seven grandchildren, Tyler (Becky) Rider, 
Tanner (Stephanie) Rider, Trevor (Amber) Pfannenstiel, Brodie (Samantha)
 Pfannenstiel, Kendra Pfannenstiel, Anna Bosco and Chiara Bosco; and 
twelve great grandchildren.

While Grace was small in stature, her presence and personality were not.&nbsp; She was devoted to God, her faith and her family.&nbsp; She always did what she could for her family and friends.&nbsp; She truly was “Amazing Grace."

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 8, 
2023, at the United Methodist Church in Ness City at 11:00 a.m. 
Contributions may be given to the United Methodist Church, Alzheimer's 
Research and Prevention Foundation, or Cedar Village.
