Mary Joan Harvey (Schroeder) passed peacefully in Mt. Dora, Fla., on June 7, 2023, at the age of 93.

She was surrounded by family. Harvey was a native Kansan and was a long-time resident of Hays.

She is survived by sons Fred (Sheri – deceased), Mark (Lise), Steve (Karen), Paul (Susan – deceased), and James (Sarita) Harvey; daughters Marilyn Schumacher (Bob), and Barbara Schnose (Mark); and brothers Fulgence (Rita), Gerald Schroeder (Mary Lou), and Dan (Janet). She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Harvey married Thomas Larkin Harvey on June 7, 1952. They were married 57 years.

She was preceded in death by husband Thomas; parents Margaret (Arendt) and Charles Schroeder; brothers John, Anthony Leon (Antonetta Marie-deceased), Charles Martel (Eileen-deceased), and Nicholas Patrick (Judy); and sisters Delores Orten (Duane-deceased), Barbara Mindrup (Patrick (Joe)-deceased), and Rose Winkler (Donald-deceased); and grandson Jake Harvey.

Harvey was an alumna of Girls Catholic High School in Hays, and Saint Mary’s Nursing School in Manhattan, Kan. She worked as a registered nurse in Kansas until retirement and had a great love for her family, friends and her faith.

The funeral will take place at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mary Joan Harvey (Schroeder) 

Diana Lynn Morris, 72, of Russell, Kansas, died, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, after a long battle with cancer.

Diana was born on October 30, 1950, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Ronald Lester and Dolores Del (Read) Burbridge. 

She grew up in Bellevue, Nebraska and Des Moines, Iowa where she attended local schools and graduated salutatorian from Southeast Polk High School in Des Moines, Iowa. After high school, she attended Drake University and graduated from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. 

She met Terry E. Morris on a blind date on New Year’s Eve, 1970. They fell in love and were united in marriage on July 1, 1972, in Omaha, Nebraska. They moved to Russell, Kansas in 1973. From this union they were blessed with three sons, Matt, Mark, and Jon. 

Diana worked as a registered nurse for Drs. White, Pettijohn, and Schulz. 

She was a longtime and very active member of the Bible Baptist Church in Russell, Kansas where she taught Sunday school, ladies’ Bible study, played piano, and directed the choir. She was a talented pianist and vocalist. She enjoyed painting, quilting, biking, walking, and reading. Most of all, Diana enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Terry of the home, sons Matt Morris and wife Kaysie of Hays, Kansas, Mark Morris and wife Amanda of Bunker Hill, Kansas and Jon Morris and wife Amanda of Trimble, Missouri and eight grandchildren: Camden, Chase, Audrie, Jake, Chailyn, Wyatt, Jack, and Maggie.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ronald and Dolores Burbridge, and brother Ronnie Burbridge.

A celebration of Diana’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. A graveside service and burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Gary Mac Fox, 75, passed away June 13, 2023 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas.

He was born September 21, 1947 in Great Bend, the son of Walter Mac and Dorothy Goldsmith Fox.

Gary graduated from Larned High School in 1966. 

Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country for four years. &nbsp;During that time, he was stationed in (Saigon) Vietnam for one year, where he served as a jet mechanic. &nbsp;He often took R&amp;R trips to Japan, where he would purchase electronic equipment and send it home for safe keeping. &nbsp;His family enjoyed the use of his record player, reel-to-reel tape player and massive speakers until he returned home to reclaim them.

Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force he returned to Kansas and attended and graduated from the North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit, KS, in today’s equivalent of agriculture equipment technology. Having grown up on the family farm, agricultural mechanicing was his way of staying connected to the family farm.

He then worked for several years for the John Deere dealerships in Larned, Great Bend, and Ottawa. &nbsp;After his career with John Deere, he worked at the Walmart Distribution Center for several years until he began his career with the Kansas Department of Transportation. He worked for KDOT until February 2023. 

Gary accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1986 at the New Covenant Church in Larned.

On January 12, 1974 he married Marsha Schultz at Larned; they later divorced.

On December 27, 1993 he married Michaelene Hurd at Larned; she preceded him in death April 18, 2016.

Survivors include two sons, Eric (Jessie) Fox, Larned, Chris Fox, Salt Lake City, Utah; two stepdaughters, Amy (Scott) Borton, Lawrence, Leah Hanson, Wichita; two brothers, Larry (Marilyn) Fox, Manhattan, Maurice Fox, Larned; six grandchildren, Allen Fox, Easton Fox, Eli Fox, Evan Fox, Kimberly Hanson, and Tyler Hanson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Michaelene, and an infant sister, Beth Ann Fox.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor David Spare presiding.

Don and Rose lived in Hays until 1994, when Don had a job opportunity in Denver, CO.&nbsp; Don managed Air Products, which is a gas and welding provider in Denver.&nbsp; 

Don loved cooking and eating and&nbsp;and enjoyed traveling, especially to see friends.&nbsp; He liked to golf, and eating at new restaurants.&nbsp; He was not against trying something new. Survivors include his wife Rose who is a financial planner and their son Dustin Dreiling, two grandsons, Dylan D. Dreiling and Austin J. Dreiling, and his sister JoAnn Sandoval of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter J. and LaVina M. Dreiling, (Urban), and two brothers, Joseph Dreiling and Ronald L. Dreiling.&nbsp;&nbsp; Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m on Friday, June 16 at St. Joseph Church.&nbsp; There will be a rosary and a service by Fr. A U.S. Navy Veteran, Jim served aboard an aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. &nbsp;

A Great Bend resident since 1998, coming from Winwood, Pennsylvania, Jim worked as a security system and fire alarm system installer for over 30 years, mostly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Memphis, Tennessee, and in Mississippi. &nbsp;

Jim was united in marriage to Jan L. Clawson on September 13, 1996 at Frederick, Maryland. 

Since moving to the high-rise in Great Bend, Jim had worked four years as maintenance security officer and night manager at the high-rise. &nbsp;He loved to work with his hands to build furniture and fix things, loved gardening and growing flowers, and was a lover of animals the great outdoors.

Survivors include his wife Jan L. Carnes of Great Bend, Kansas and one sister, Jeanette of Mississippi, along with his faithful chocolate Labrador Tyson (also known affectionately as “Hound Dog”). &nbsp;

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.

According to his wishes, cremation has been chosen and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at the High Rise Meeting Room, 1101 Kansas Avenue, Great Bend, Kansas with Charles Bookout officiating. &nbsp;

SCOTT CITY - Thelma G. Miller, age 91, peacefully passed away on June 12, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on August 27, 1931, in Ransom, Kansas the daughter of William Roy and Nellie Adkinson Barnett.&nbsp; 

A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1937 moving from Ransom, Kansas, she was the retired owner of Miller’s Grain in Scott City, Kansas.

On August 28, 1949, she married Delmer Miller in Scott City Kansas, the day after she turned 18. Thelma liked to tell the story that she could legally be married but Delmer had to have his parents sign a consent because the legal age for a woman to marry was 18 but for a man, it was 21. He passed away on May 28, 1993, in Scott City, Kansas.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, High Plains Study Club, Funds for Fun, Tuesday Bridge Club, and was Past President of Kansas West Conference United Methodist Women.&nbsp;

Thelma enjoyed many other activities. She was a master at making meals for Delmer’s harvest crews during wheat harvest, commander of the dishwasher at the Methodist Church, and an earache specialist. When Delmer semi-retired and bought a boat for fishing, the children and grandchildren decided they would rather water ski so Delmer bought another boat for him to fish and taught Thelma to drive the other to take her family and friends water skiing. Many great days were spent at Trenton, Nebraska (Swanson Reservoir) at their trailer with family and friends.&nbsp; 

In her 40s, Thelma chaperoned many church youth groups on snow skiing trips. She informed Delmer if she was going with them, she might as well ski. This led to numerous years of her and Delmer enjoying the slopes. Thelma last snow skied when she was 75 years old with great-grandsons Austin and Nick.

Survivors include her son Craig Miller of Scott City, Kansas, daughters Cozette and Van Buckner of Scott City, Kansas, Cynthia Lee Miller and Huxley Nixon, Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri, sister Lela Bishop of Leoti, Kansas, granddaughters Jennifer Turpin, Stephanie (Turpin) Brown, Andrea (Miller) Tucker, Ashlee (Miller) Moses and Cameron Turpin,&nbsp; great-grandchildren&nbsp; Austin Rios, Nick Brown, Hannah Tucker, Jake Moses and Bo Moses and great-great-grandchild&nbsp; Lumi Rios.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Neal Barnett and Wade Barnett.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas, with the Rev. Jeff Goetzinger and Rev. Dennis Carter presiding.

SCOTT CITY - Elissa Carol Bahm, age 71, Topeka, KS died peacefully on Monday, June 12,&nbsp;2023&nbsp;in Topeka, KS. &nbsp;She was born May 3, 1952, in Garden City, KS, to Keith A. and Carolyn L. (Shriver) Janzen. &nbsp;She grew up and lived most of her life in Scott City, KS,&nbsp;moving to Topeka in 2021 to be closer to her family.

Elissa worked her high school years at the famous&nbsp;Burgerteria&nbsp;and was involved with The Order of Rainbow Girls, graduating from SCHS in 1970.&nbsp;

Elissa married Dannie G. Bahm on June 6, 1970. &nbsp;He passed&nbsp;away March 12,&nbsp;2022&nbsp;in Topeka, KS. &nbsp;To this union, three children were born, Doug Bahm, Darin Bahm and Carrie (Bahm)&nbsp;Doyal. &nbsp;

Dannie and Elissa moved to the farm in 1973 and soon started farming with her dad, Keith Janzen. &nbsp;Elissa was a church organist, Sunday School teacher, was highly involved with all three children, serving as a 4-H Leader of the Lucky Clover 4-H Club and wrote the Pence Particulars for the local newspaper for years. &nbsp;

She had worked in the office of Royal Beef and later at Bill Wright’s law&nbsp;office. &nbsp;

Elissa had a heart of gold, placing others before herself. &nbsp;She supported her husband in his&nbsp;adventures, and&nbsp;was always looking out for her family and friends. &nbsp;She loved playing games and decorating Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren and her annual Christmas shopping sprees with her best friend,&nbsp;Tonda. She had a huge love for animals, music, singing, Branson theater shows, watching Hallmark movies, and visiting family and friends,&nbsp;and also&nbsp;making them feel special&nbsp;when&nbsp;family and friends moved&nbsp;into the nursing home.

Survivors include her children, Doug Bahm (Topeka), Darin and Vicky Bahm (Kansas City, MO), and Carrie and Scott&nbsp;Doyal&nbsp;(Topeka), her sister,&nbsp;Ann&nbsp;and Jud Price (Eureka, MO), and her grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, Jordan and Kaitlyn&nbsp;Doyal, Cameron, Jenna and Amanda Bahm, and Austin Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Mary Pauline (Carlton) Arehart was born January 21, 1935, to Glen and Irene (Ward) Carlton in Albuquerque, NM. She passed away June 12, 2023, at the age of 88 in the Andbe Home in Norton, KS. Mary was the eldest of six children. 

She attended Norton Community Schools, graduating from Norton Community High School in 1953. 

She married Rodney Arehart on April 22, 1954, in Norton, KS. To this union eight children were born. Mary was a homemaker who cared for her children, grandchildren, and babysat for others.

She is survived by her children Jim of Norton, KS, Greg of Norton, KS, Bill of Salina, KS, Cheryl (Michael) Sauvage of Oberlin, KS, Don (Nancy) of Norton, KS, Lisa Miller of Almena, KS, Todd of Osawatamie, KS; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); 10 great-great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Loretta Ray of Norton, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rodney; son Robert; bonus son Jeremy Courtain; daughter-in-law Lita (Jim’s wife); sisters Gerry Urban and Connie Hendrix and brothers J.B. Carlton and Tom Carlton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-7:00 p.m. Friday, June 16 with the family greeting friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Wallace County, Kansas resident Toohey “Buddy” Riley Allaman, 86, died Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Topside Manor in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp;

Buddy was born April 17, 1937, at Winona, Kansas, the son of George and Thelma (Messler) Allaman.&nbsp; He was one of six children.&nbsp; 

He attended school in Wallace and graduated from Wallace County Community High School in 1954 in Sharon Springs.

He served in the United States Army in Korea from 1956 to 1959.

On December 28, 1958, he and Glenda Norton were married at the First Baptist Church in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp;

Buddy worked for Jaeger Implement in Leoti from 1959 until he retired in 1992.&nbsp; John Deere was his whole life.&nbsp; 

He also loved playing dominoes and 4 point pitch, collecting antiques, and he especially loved spending time with his family and getting to see the new babies as they were added to the family.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death were his wife Glenda and his parents George and Thelma, brother Mickey Allaman, brother-in-law Bill Fricks,&nbsp; great-granddaughter Emma Greeson and two nephews, Greg and TJ Allaman.

Surviving family includes his children Linda (Robert) Petty of Sugar City, CO, Peggy (John) Dautel of Goodland, KS, Adam (Dawn) Allaman of Wallace, KS and Riley (Karla) Allaman of Marienthal, KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and four siblings, Helen Jean Fricks of Muldrow, OK, Jimmy (Pat) Allaman of Goodland, KS, Richard (Connie) Allaman of Goodland, KS and Sharon (Freddy) Nowak of McPherson, KS.

Denise's most cherished role was that of a wife and mother. She married the love of her life, Timothy Miller, and together they built a beautiful family. Their union was blessed with four children: Elly, Logan, Jacob, and Courtney. Tragically, Denise was preceded in death by her father Leon, and her children Jacob and Courtney. The loss of her children was a profound sorrow that she carried with immense strength and grace.

Denise's passion for education led her to become a teacher at Thunder Ridge High School, where she dedicated ten years of her life to shaping the minds of countless students. Her commitment to her students and her love for teaching left a lasting impression on the school and those fortunate enough to have been a part of her classroom.

Denise's love for Kensington was evident in her tireless efforts to beautify the city. As a leader in a city beautification project, she took great pride in making Kensington a more vibrant and welcoming place for all. Her dedication and hard work will continue to be appreciated and admired for years to come.

Denise's memory will forever be cherished by her loving husband Tim Miller, daughter Elly McElroy and her husband Billy, and son Logan Miller who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and perseverance. She also leaves behind her mother Nancy Heineken, her brothers Kyle Heineken and his wife Jenny, Brad Heineken and his wife Tonya, and her sister Dana Heineken.

In addition to her immediate family, Denise will be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews, and the countless lives she touched with her warm and caring nature. She held a special place in the hearts of those who knew her and made a lasting impact on her community.

Albert Lloyd Jenik, 82, of Atwood, died Friday, June 9, 2023. He was born March 27, 1941, in Colby, KS, to Frank and Phyllis (Oelke) Jenik. 

Lloyd graduated from Oakley High School and attended Colby Community College. 

He worked at the Kansas State Highway Department in Oakley, at S&amp;S Body Shop in Colby and Dale’s Body Shop in Colby. Eventually Lloyd started Jenik Auto Body in Atwood, retiring in 2012. Lloyd was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. The only day of the year he got up early, without grumbling, was the first day of pheasant season. He was a member of the Atwood Rotary Club, Atwood Investment Club and the Rawlins County Sportsman’s Association. Lloyd married Delma Boss on January 25, 1969. They were married for 52 years, some of them being happy years, as Lloyd liked to joke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Phyllis Jenik; sister Nancy Jenik and his beloved pets. Lloyd is survived by his wife Delma Jenik; brother Dwayne Jenik; nieces, nephews and their families, Sheila (Bryan) Crouch, James (Misty) Jenik, Sheryl (Kenneth) Carter, Jeff (Kathy) Colvin and Sherri Roberts, along with many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Atwood.

&nbsp; Peter W. Dahl, 62, of Belleville, passed away June 11.

Peter Winston Dahl was born on November 1, 1960, in Hallock, Minnesota and died on June 11, 2023, in his hometown of Belleville, Kansas. 

He was the 4th child of Byron and Betsey Dahl. His three siblings remember standing on the sidewalk outside their mother’s hospital room window as she held newborn Peter in her arms for them to see him for the first time.

Peter’s early life was filled with fun on the farm outside of Kennedy, Minnesota. 

He attended school in Kennedy and graduated in 1978. He then obtained an AS degree from UMC in Crookston, MN.

Peter then turned to farming and helped his father Byron with planting and harvesting of wheat and sugar beets. He ultimately took over the farming when Byron retired.

Peter’s life took a good turn when he moved to Belleville, Kansas about 20 years ago. He worked at a dairy farm for awhile and then on a paving road crew.

He developed his business&nbsp;Peter Dahl Creations,&nbsp;which was an antique furniture refinishing business. He had learned this trade from his father Byron and loved making old furniture beautiful again.

Peter’s health problems started in 2015 when he fell off a ladder and broke several back and rib bones. The last three years were especially difficult and he had six major surgeries. Peter displayed strength of spirit during these last years and surprised his physicians by his fortitude and sense of humor. His physical heart was weak, but his loving heart was strong.

Peter is survived by his two sisters, Cynthia Maloney (Dan Maloney) and Nancy Dahl (Michael Hannon) and sister-in-law Vickie Dahl. He has many loved nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. He has many first and second cousins. And he leaves many friends he made in Belleville who have been so helpful to him these last years. His ornery cat Tess has found a good new home.

He was pre-deceased by his brother Conrad McCulloch Dahl and his parents Betsey and Byron Dahl.

Services will be arranged at a later time. Please remember Peter in your thoughts and prayers.

Michael was born on January 5, 1956, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Francis Clark and Patricia Lew (Brockett) Whisler. 

He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. After high school he attended Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas. 

Michael moved around for several years before settling in Arizona where he worked for the forestry department building trails and fighting fires. 

About 20 years ago, he moved back to Russell, Kansas, where he made his permanent home and was a self-employed painter in Russell and the surrounding area. He enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, collecting rocks, geology, golf, woodworking, fishing, growing sunflowers, and playing and listening to music.

Surviving family include his daughter Jessica Cunningham and husband Brent of Glen Elder, Kansas, sister Susan Albers and husband Fred of Overland Park, Kansas and grandchildren Drew, Tanna and Bailee Cunningham. He leaves a niece, Holly Albers, nephew Jordan Albers and a great-nephew, Maddox, all in the Kansas City area. He also leaves special aunts and many dear cousins and friends.

Nancy Kathryn Baxter, 67, passed away on June 11, 2023, at University of Kansas Health Systems ER – Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on November 30, 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Hiram Joseph Jr. and Patricia Ida Mae (Younkin) Baxter.&nbsp;

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, during her working years, Nancy was the accompanist for Great Bend High School Choir groups. She was also a well-known accompanist outside of the school district in different groups, churches, and even socially. 

Nancy was a member of Encounter Church, graduating from the Women of Valor Discipleship Program, and later became a mentor of ladies in the program, and the Worship Band. She was a former member of First United Methodist Church, Chapter HR-PEO, and Job’s Daughters. 

Nancy was a passionate University of Kansas fan, loved cooking and spending time with her dogs, and above all, cherished spending time with her family, stepping into the matriarch role and being the favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews she referred to as “her kids”.

Survivors include three brothers, Jeffrey Baxter and wife Connie, of Leavenworth, Charles Baxter and wife Karen, of Basehor, Alan Baxter of Great Bend; a sister, Lori Underwood and husband Jeff, of Lawrence; “her kids”, Dustin Baxter and wife Sarah, Tara Talley and husband Trent, Olivia Natelli and husband Kenny, David Baxter, Jonathan Baxter, Lindsay Baxter, Megan Berger and husband Chris, Patrick Underwood and wife Makenna, Kelly Blackburn and husband Logan, Chelsea Fincham and husband Brandon, Robert Underwood, AnnaLeesha Huddleston and husband Cody, and Addison Baxter and wife Kelsie; and great-nieces and nephews, Arthur Baxter, Hunter Talley, Wyatt Talley, Avery Talley, Magdelyn Talley, Aurora Natelli, Nova Natelli, Audrey Underwood, Landon Berger, Matthew Berger, Owen Blackburn, Lucy Blackburn, Charlotte Fincham, Charley Rose Huddleston, Kason Baxter, Kouper Baxter, and one on the way. 

Visitation will take place at noon to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, with family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on June 21, 2023, at Encounter Church, with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to Encounter Church Women of Valor Discipleship Program, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Patrycia Ann (London) Herndon, 84, died Tuesday June 6, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on June 1, 1939 in Bailey, Texas, the daughter of Rodney Baxter and Sedera (Morgan) London. Patrycia's attended primary school in Bailey and went on to attend Foster Junior High, and Longview High School. Patrycia artistic skill began at an early age, she often made paper dolls with her grandmother and regularly made outfits for her little rat terrier dog. Even at a young age she had a passion for nature and especially horses. She could occasionally be convinced to tell the story of being so bored at a basketball game she snuck out with a cup of water and drew horses in the dirt on the side of the school bus. When it was discovered, she was missing it was pretty clear where she was and what she was doing. While Patrycia was still in High School, Patrycia was commissioned to paint a mural for the baptistry in the Marbley Avenue Baptist Church in Longview, Texas. Her reputation grew and she continued to hone her skills and went on to attend Texas Women’s University, majoring in Costume Design, Fashion Illustration and Art Education. While attending TWU, she met her future husband Walter Owen Herndon. Walter Owen was attending LeTourneau Tech, and was running for Student Council President and she was set up on a blind-date to ride with him in the parade. As the story goes, he was so impressed with her, he asked her out the very next year. The relationship soon after became official and they were married following Patrycia’s junior year. It was then they first moved back to Kansas, for a few months they lived in the rent house behind the Winegar Home. Patrycia and Walter Owen did return to Denton where Patrycia finished her degree at TWU and Walter Owen worked as a disc sharpener for farmers in the area. After graduation the couple moved to Kansas permanently, and took up residence in Amy, Kansas. It was in Amy, Patrycia was finally able to have her horses. She favored Arabians, she had several: Tumbleweed, Adarae, Valada, Muskada, Ingaborg, Kioola and El Kazara. Patrycia was a member of the local saddle club. Moving onto the Great Plains was not without its challenges, but Patrycia took inspiration from the majestic thunderheads, the gently rolling plains, from all forms of nature and from the heritage and history that existed throughout the region. As a little girl she had read about the famous “fish within a fish” at the Sternberg Museum, and was awestruck that it was unearthed only a few miles away in Gove County. Patrycia continued her education, receiving a teaching certificate at Fort Hays State University and did her student teaching in Great Bend, Kansas. Patrycia occasionally taught as a substitute teacher, covering for a maternity leave on one occasion. Patrycia soon began offering private art lessons and it was there she found her forte. She was blessed to have become friends with the Heffner Family in Gove County and drew considerable inspiration from the Heffner’s “Wagon’s Ho” destination adventure. Her reputation grew across the region and it wasn’t long before she was being commissioned to paint rustic farm scenes to grace the mantles of many area farms and ranches. In a few years Walter and Patrycia started a family. They had a son, Joel Steven in 1967 and daughter Kendra Alana in 1971. A year later the family moved to the farmstead at 167 N. Cheyenne. During these years she became a founding member of the Lane County Historical Society and of the Lane County Art’s Council. The children’s education began in the small rural Amy School, but in a few years the county consolidated and the children went to Dighton Grade School. Having to make two trips to town every day, Patrycia elected to stay in town and paint until time to pick up the kids. It was then she managed to acquire Fred Hymes Real Estate office and turned it in to her “Bonnet String Studio.” It was here her talent really took off, becoming a founding member of the Women Artist of the American West (serving two terms as president) and of various watercolor societies. In a few years she had outgrown the little studio and was blessed to be offered the old First National Bank building at the corner of Lane and Long Streets. She fell in love with the building the first time she saw it. Using her own capitol, she managed to acquire the building in 1981. There was a year or two of transition but as soon as it was feasible, she moved her studio and gallery into the historic building. Almost immediately she began working on restoring the building to its historic magnificence. She managed to acquire a local teller’s cage and over the next few years restored the tin ceiling, light fixtures and other furnishings. She built stained-glass transoms for every window on both floors of the building. She even managed to return the original safe, from its current home in the Bonnet String Studio back to its former home in the First National Bank Building. She was honored to be allowed to participate in the 100th anniversary of the First National Bank celebration. All the while she continued to teach students and many local students were blessed to be encouraged by Patrycia’s tutelage. Some have gone on to secure degrees in art and several work professionally. Every success her former students achieved was of great pride to her and served to further inspire her own work. Patrycia’s teaching and fine art received another boost when Walter Owen and Patrycia moved into town, purchasing the Kalo and Geneva Hineman home at 145 South Second. The sun porch on the north side became another source of inspiration for her creativity. During this time Patrycia won several prestigious awards in the “Art is Ageless” competition and was the featured artist at Botanica four different times. Patrycia was blessed to have received two separate grants from the Heritage Trust Fund which allowed her to achieve her goal of finishing the work on the Old Bank Gallery and in time acquired the rest of the wrap-around building, which became the workspace for so many projects. One of Patrycia’s crowning achievements was to become a founding member of the “Painted Ladies.” Named for a species of butterfly, this was a group of like-minded women artists from the region who would get together once a month and spend the day emersed in their various art projects. They often would exhibit together at the 2nd Avenue Art Guild and at the Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas. Patrycia’s husband Walter Owen passed in 2010, but it didn’t slow her down any. She took over bookkeeping for the farm and even drove a truck during milo harvest. She was constantly reinventing herself. When the pandemic came it was difficult for Patrycia to postpone her lessons, but it was of great joy she was able to start them up again when the crisis passed. Students Evie, Olive, Harper and Evey brought immense joy to Patrycia. She worked with other students and colleagues, during this time: Shelly Selfridge, Jenny Linden-Tracz and Julia Pate to name three. All loved Patrycia with all their hearts. Patrycia continued to teach until the end of the semester, shortly before her passing. Patrycia’s final scheduled show will be the first week of August at the 2nd Avenue Art Guild in Dodge City, Kansas. Patrycia’s radiance touched everyone she knew. Thousands were influenced and affected by her grace. We should all be so lucky. Survivors include her son Joel S. Herndon of Dighton, Kansas; daughter Kendra Alana Herndon and husband Nic of Greenville, North Carolina; brother Joe London of Henrico, Virginia; sister Jane Mullins of Dallas, Texas; and sister-in-law Corinne Herndon of Dighton, Kansas. Rosalie Ann Urban, 83, passed away June 12, 2023, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River. She was born July 18, 1939, at Quinter, to Balthasar J. and Angela (Von Lintel) Richmeier. She married Arsenius A. Urban on February 20, 1960, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend and Seward area resident, Rosalie was a hairdresser. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Seward, Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend and the Altar Society. She was a very talented quilter and cook, and she always made sure that her family was fed well.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband Arsenius of the home; three sons, Wayne Urban and wife LuAnn of St. Joseph, Mo., Bryan Urban and wife Joyce of Wichita and Daryle Urban and wife Shelley of Ozawkie, Kan.; a daughter, Denise Joslin and husband Dr. Charles Joslin of Ellinwood; four sisters, Sophie, Jean, Patty and Roberta; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, with the seventh to arrive in August. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Nicholas Joslin; three brothers, Valerian, Frank and Jerry Richmeier; and two sisters, Agnes and Margie.&nbsp;
