Glade resident, Larry R. Chestnut, passed away Aug. 24, 2023 at this home in Glade at the age of 76. &nbsp;He was born May 2, 1947 in Phillipsburg, the son of Roy and Norma (Hoover) Chestnut.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of the home; sons, Brad, Ty and Matt of Glade; daughter, Julie Hodnett of Elk City, OK; his brother Dennis of Speed; sisters, Joyce Campbell, Joan Russo and Terri Greer of Speed and nine grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. &nbsp;A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joyce Eileen (Boatright) Hemphill, 80, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Eileen was born February 14, 1943 in Junction City, Kansas, the daughter of Lawrence M. and Beatrice (Deines) Boatright.&nbsp; Lawrence worked in the oil fields in central Kansas so they moved around during her childhood.&nbsp; She graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’61.

Eileen was united in marriage to Earl M. Hemphill on September 2, 1962 in Russell.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children, Larry, James and Audra.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.&nbsp; 

Earl preceded her in death on April 11, 2002.

Eileen was a devoted wife and homemaker for her children.&nbsp; She did odd jobs throughout her life and really enjoyed running auto parts for Dean’s Auto Repair.&nbsp; 

She was an active member of the Bible Baptist Church.&nbsp; She also was a member of the Fire Fighters Ladies Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals.&nbsp; She also loved attending her grandchildren’s events.

Eileen’s surviving family include her two sons, Larry Hemphill (Bethena) of Gypsum, Kansas and James M. Hemphill of Russell, Kansas; her daughter, Audra McCall (Keith) of Florida; two sisters, Diana Boxberger (Ron) of Russell, Kansas and Deloris Wegele (Allen) of Concho, Arizona; sister-in-law, Andy Martin of Clyde, Texas; six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and husband Earl.

Celebration of Eileen’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 28, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m..&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Bible Baptist Church.&nbsp;

Joyce Eileen (Boatright) Hemphill

Husband, father, and grandfather, Harold R. “Harry” Legleiter, entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. He was 80.

Harry was born October 12, 1942, the tenth of fourteen children to Anton and Genevieve Legleiter in Liebenthal, Kansas. He graduated in 1961 from Hays High School. 

A few years later, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Sander on September 27, 1965, and that brought 57 years of a life filled with six children and fourteen grandchildren. 

In 1968, he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army and served two years in Fort Hood, Texas. 

Harry was talented and skilled in home building and changed the real estate landscape with over 100 homes in Hays. His true vocation came when the amber waves of grain and the care of livestock became his passion. 

Not knowing a stranger, Harry often entertained others with his guitar and singing. His love of antiquing, competitive card playing, and making his legendary cookies and noodles became a ministry of love in his later years.

Survivors include his wife Pat of the home in Hays, five daughters, Renee Ford (Richard) of Dallas, TX, Janell Nease (Gary Hobbs) of Hays, Leah Leiker (Carl) of Thompson Station, TN, Trisha Harris (Andrew) of Hays, and Annie Erbert (Myron) of Hays, a son-in-law, Michael Nease of Hays, three brothers, Miles Legleiter (Janie) of Hays, Wally Legleiter of Hays, Dennis Legleiter (Carol Lou) of Gorham, two sisters, Patty Rohr (Gary) and Germaine Degenhardt, both of Hays, two sisters-in-law, Leota Legleiter of Great Bend and Carol Legleiter of Hays, fourteen grandchildren, David and Michael Ford, Ashley Robinson (Micquille), Kristen Nease, Samuel and Gabriel Nease, Noah, Halo, and Vienna Leiker, Viola, Stella, and Ezra Harris, Ava and Isla Erbert, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Lydia Sander, daughter, Wendy Nease, infant son, Ryan Michael, six brothers, Gerald (Betty), Wilfred (Deltha), Donald (Helen), LeeRoy, Tony, and Melvin (Sue), two sisters, Dorothy McCollum (Bill) and Virginia Kinderknecht (Don), and a sister-in-law, Betty Jane Legleiter.

A celebration of life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August, 28, 2023 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 East 8th Street, Hays, with Pastor Brant Rice officiating, followed by lunch at the Rose Garden. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Monday, all at the Rose Garden. Private family inurnment with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will be at a later date in Mt. Allen Cemetery.

Growing up on the family farm in New Mexico, she learned to drive tractors and drove the school bus. Theresa found joy in reading, watching western movies, and crocheting. Playing cards and tuning in to Wheel of Fortune every night were among her favorite pastimes. Theresa is preceded in death by her parents, Enrique and Corina Romero, her brother Hank Romero, and her sister Edna Romero. She is survived by six sisters, Mary A. Katie was a beautiful soul who sought to love and serve others and to trust God in the midst of her daily struggles. She had a quirky sense of humor that often took family, friends, and co-workers by surprise. Katie found fulfillment in caring for the hurt and the broken through her work at Kearny County EMS. Katie's passion for helping others extended beyond her career. She often assisted her father in remodeling work at Victory Baptist Church, whether it was lifting a sheet of sheetrock, painting a new ceiling, or playfully painting the top of her dad's head. Her kind and compassionate nature will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Katie is survived by her parents, Kenton and Cynthia Connor of Lakin, Kansas; her siblings, Caleb, William, and James Connor, also of Lakin; her grandparents, Kenneth and Leta Connor of Plainfield, Illinois, and WH Ford of Clearwater, Kansas; as well as a host of wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jessie Connor, and her grandmother, Laverne Ford. Katie found solace and strength in her personal relationship with Jesus and was an member of Victory Baptist Church in Lakin, Kansas. In her free time, Katie loved capturing the beauty of nature through photography. She had a deep love for animals and often tried to bring more of them home. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Sunday, August 27, 2023, from 3-5 p.m. at Garnand's Funeral Home in Lakin. Katherine Anne Connor

Roberta “Bobbi” Jo Urban, 62, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, at her home in Richardson, Texas. Bobbi was born in Hays to Robert and Julaine “Janie” (Helget) Urban on May 15, 1961.

Bobbi grew up in Hays, graduating from Thomas Marian Prep High School in 1979. She later attended Fort Hays State University to earn her bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees.

Her career was spent working in health care billing and coding administration.

In her spare time, Bobbi had been certified in scuba diving and enjoyed traveling with her son, Darren, on tropical diving vacations. She was a lifelong dog lover, a regular giant inflatable balloon handler in the annual Dallas Holiday Parade, and absolutely adored her only grandchild.

She is survived by her son Darren Bottorf; daughter Julia Bottorf, her partner Jake Lopez and granddaughter Birdie Lopez of San Antonio, Texas; brother Dave Urban and sister-in-law Jackie Urban, nephew Andrew Urban and niece Maria Urban of Lawrence.

Preceding her in death were her parents Robert and Janie Urban.

Dr. Michael T. Hagan, 39, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS.&nbsp;

Mike was born May 16, 1984, in Wichita, KS, the son of Robert and Jane (Wolfe) Hagan. He was a graduate of Kapaun Mount Carmel in Wichita. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2006 where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He attended the University of Kansas Medical school and earned his Medical Degree in 2010 with high honors. Mike then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. In 2016, he moved to Kansas City&nbsp;and joined Consultants in Gastroenterology in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp;

As a freshman at KU, he met the love of his life, Tami Ziegler. They married in 2007 at St. Lawrence Chapel at KU. Tami is the daughter of Glenn and Cindy Ziegler of WaKeeney.

He was a loving father and earned his girl dad degree with high honors. From teaching and coaching and knowing all their favorite songs, his family was his whole world. He loved sharing his passion for KU basketball and golf with his family. While at work he was a brilliant, conscientious, and well-respected gastroenterologist.&nbsp;

If love was his first language, laughter was his second. Mike will be remembered for his ornery personality and sense of humor that lit up every room. That knowing glance, mischievous smile, and big belly laughter made everyone he met forever richer. He was always there for anyone in need with fun, compassion, comfort, and support.&nbsp;

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Tami, his three beautiful and brilliant daughters Ellie (10), Riley (8), and Norah (6) and their family dog, Sparkles Rainbow. He leaves behind his parents, Bob and Jane of Wichita, his brother Mark (Carrie), and sister Sarah (Andrew) and a large extended family.&nbsp;

August. &nbsp;They were married in 1986. &nbsp;In 2002, they retired to Pahrump, Nevada. &nbsp;They spent their retirement years travelling the western United States sight-seeing and visiting many national parks. Karen was preceded in death by her father, mother, and husband. &nbsp;

She passed August 17, 2023 at &nbsp;Hickum Assisted Living Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is survived by her brother Richard “Rick” DeFries of Wichita, Kansas, as well as many cousins. Father Melvin Long was born August 7, 1940, in New Almelo. He died on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

Father Long’s parents were Andrew and Regina (Otter) Long. He attended grade school at St. John’s in Beloit, graduated from St. Francis Seminary High School in Victoria, St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, as well as the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain in Belgium.

He was ordained June 18, 1966, at St. John the Baptist in Beloit by Bishop Cyril Vogel.

One of the most notable accomplishments during Father Long’s ministry was founding St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Salina in 1981. Father Long led the project, building the parish from the ground up. The parish today is served by Father Keith Weber and has 684 families as regular parishioners. As the parish was being built, Father Long celebrated Mass in some very interesting places, including the movie theater!

Father Long’s priestly ministry included teaching positions at Marymount College, Bethany College and Cloud County Community College, but he was also called to minister in Europe. Father Long spent his seminary years in Belgium at the American Theological Seminary at University of Louvain. After his ordination, he was called back to Belgium to serve as a faculty member in 1973 and later served as leadership in the 1990s.

When Father Long retired in 2002, he moved to California due to health complications. However, his priestly ministry did not stop there. He filled in at parishes across the country so that other priests could take extended sabbaticals. He also was a part of the “Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America” and did some cruise ship ministry for several years.

In the May 2016 issue of <a href="https://salinadiocese.org/news-and-updates/father-melvin-long-obituary/">The Register</a>, Father Long stated, “I love ministry, and I love people. That’s why I’ve continued (ministering) beyond retirement on a regular basis.”&nbsp; He also fondly recalled the many friendships he still maintained from his years serving in the Diocese of Salina.

Blystone, age 93, of Goodland passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Topside Manor in Goodland.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mary was born May 3, 1930 on the family farm south of Kanorado, KS, to Emmett L. and Dorothy A. (Freeman) Blystone. She was the second of four daughters born to the couple. She was the granddaughter of Frank L. and Mary (Schlosser) Blystone and Byron E. and Harriet (Alward) Freeman.

Mary was a lifelong Sherman County resident, attending school in Kanorado. 

After graduation she attended business college in Denver, CO. 

She then returned to the farm and helped her parents. Her favorite farm chores were taking care of the small animals and gardening. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kanorado. She always made sure the church had fresh flowers for Sunday service. Mary enjoyed playing the piano or organ as needed, as well as helping with vacation bible school.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Edna Golembski and Joyce Blystone.&nbsp;&nbsp;She is survived by her sister Ruth I. Nichols, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Funeral service will be Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home, 211 East 11th Street, Goodland. Interment will follow the service at the Kanorado Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, August 18, 2023 from 4 to 6 p.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home.

She was born November 17, 1931 in Larned the daughter of Alfred and Alice M. Delp Fagen. &nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, she worked in the Register of Deeds office.

She was a member of the Dodge City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Builders Club at the church, and the VFW Auxiliary. &nbsp;She enjoyed, traveling, sightseeing, camping, skiing, going to garage sales and scrapbooking.

On November 30, 1952 she married Malcolm W. McKibbin in Jetmore. &nbsp;He passed away May 25, 2003.

Survivors include a son, Scot (Susan) McKibbin, Jetmore, a daughter, Shari (Brent) Waggoner, Bonner Springs, Idaho; a brother, Dean (Deanna) Fagen, Spearville and a sister, Kay (Loren) Ochs, Jetmore; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her husband Malcolm and a daughter, Kim Gibbs.

She was born June 12, 1953, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Gilbert Raymond and Claradella (Horton) Widows. Sue has lived most of her life in Garden City, except for 2 years where she lived in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Sue attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School. She later attended Garden City Community College. 

She worked in accounting as a bookkeeper for Brookover and later at Southwest Ag.

Sue was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mostly murder mysteries. She loved KU basketball and watching Patrick Mahomes play for both Texas Tech and the Kansas City Chiefs. On April 29, 1972, she married Michael J. Hahn in Garden City, Kansas. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Launda L. (Ted) Herman of Lathrop, Missouri, and Susan R. (Danny) Rojas of Garden City, Kansas; a sister, Joyce Roberts of Salina, Kansas; a brother, Thomas Widows of Hutchinson, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents Gilbert and Claradella Widows; a brother, Gilbert Leslie Widows; and three sisters, Jackie Widows, Shellie Belben, and an infant sister, Della Raye Widows. A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Jim Akins and Von Hunn officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours.

Jay Alan Todd of Rexford, Kansas passed away on August 17, 2023. He was born on May 7, 1969 in Colby, Kansas to Doug and Joan (Harker) Todd. 

On June 17, 1995, Jay married Brandy Goodman and settled in Rexford where they raised their family.

Jay was raised on the McKee/Todd homestead south of Rexford and was a lifelong resident of northwest Kansas. 

He graduated from Golden Plains High School in 1987 and attended Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma before transferring to Kansas State University where he graduated in 1992 with a bachelor of xcience degree in znimal xcience and industry. Jay was a cowboy, cattleman and banker.

He was the 1986 Kansas High School Team Roping Champion with Kyle Elwood and a national finalist calf roper in 1987. He represented Panhandle State at the college national finals in 1989. After college, Jay followed in the footsteps of his uncle, H.L. Todd, and began steer roping and roped at numerous PRCA rodeos around the country.

Jay formed Todd Land &amp; Cattle with his dad and began growing and running feeder cattle on the farm in eastern Thomas County and western Sheridan County. Together they developed a respected program and enjoyed routinely topping the market when their calves sold on Superior Livestock.

In 2002, Jay followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, John Harker, when he joined Peoples State Bank (now Outdoor Bank) as a loan officer leading to a 21-year banking career, Jay was currently the executive vice president and senior loan officer at the Outdoor Bank. Jay was a visible member of the northwest Kansas agriculture and business community with offices in Colby, Hoxie, and Oakley. 

Jay was currently serving on the USD 316 school board and the Northwest Kansas Educational Service Center board. He has served on numerous boards over the years. Jay loved helping people in his community.

Jay accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age and was active in the Rexford Community Church.

Jay and Brandy were blessed with three children, daughters Taylor (fiancé Kyle Harris) and Tylor, and son, Tannor. They were his passion. He loved helping his children succeed and made sure he was there to mentor, support, and assist them in their various ventures.

In addition to his loving wife and children, Jay is survived by his parents, Doug and Joan Todd, Rexford, Kansas, his brother, Jeff (Nancy) Todd, Wayne, Oklahoma, his sister, Jody (Cade) Leeper, Wilmore, Kansas, nieces, nephews, and a loving extended family. 

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Bernice (McKee) Todd and John and Norrene (Summers) Harker.

Visitation with the family will be at the Rexford Community Church on Monday, August 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Golden Plains High School Gymnasium on Tuesday, August 22 at 10:30 a.m.

Karen Jean (Carr) Morrison , 81, was called to her Heavenly home on August 18, 2023. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and Christian. Born May 2, 1942, to Gordon and Sylvia (Houston) Carr of rural Colby, KS, Karen was the oldest of their four children.

She grew up on the family farm, southeast of Colby, and attended Colby Public Schools, graduating in 1960. 

Lured by sophomore classmate Jim Morrison's repeated offerings of gum and candy, Karen and Jim began dating and eventually married on August 25, 1963, at the Gem Baptist Church. Like the original sticky and sweet enticements, Karen and Jim 'stuck together' for 47 years, strengthening and sweetening each other's lives, creating a loving family, enduring heartaches, and serving their community. 

To their marriage were born three sons: James Michael (1965-1986), Jeffrey Beckner (1967), and Jon Scott (1969). An adopted daughter Lisa joined the family in 1974. Karen, a registered nurse, (1963 graduate of Stormont Vail School of Nursing, Topeka, KS) and Dr. Jim, optometrist, (1964 graduate of KU and 1967 graduate of Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, TN) served professionally in both Memphis and Garden City, KS, before returning to Colby where they gave lifetimes of professional and volunteer service to their beloved 'hometown.'

After their children were grown, Karen and Jim spent 18 years travelling to and from legislative sessions in Topeka where Jim served as State Representative for the 121st District. Beyond nursing, Karen had many creative interests. She loved antique dolls and knew the specific history and qualities of each one. She was an accomplished tole painter and enjoyed sewing, quilling and ceramics. She loved children and 'critters,' and spent years volunteering as Cub and Boy Scout den mother and 4-H Leader, raising and rescuing Sheltie dogs, and being a benefactor to area animal shelters. She was an excellent cook and dessert maker- her chocolate sheet cake was regularly requested for birthdays and family gatherings. Likewise, until health limitations, Karen enjoyed hosting family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Above all, Karen valued and loved her family. Being 'Mom and Grandma' was her greatest joy. Karen annually hosted a 'Family Vacation,' with children and grandchildren uniting year after year, usually to mountain locations, where they vigorously enjoyed each other in the beautiful outdoors. Those family vacations, a 'Forever Gift,' remain a priceless memory and a lasting legacy. As 'Grandma' to eight grandsons and three granddaughters, Karen played endless games of Ghostbuster, G-I Joe, and Wii Bowling. She had a keen sense of humor, quick wit, ready laugh, and loved a good-natured, practical joke. Enjoying humorist Erma Bombeck and 'The Far Side' comic strip served as motivation for Karen to sometimes create her own comics, sending to family members as situations presented themselves! Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Sylvia Carr; her in-laws, Pete and Louise Morrison; her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karen (Hornbaker) Morrison; her beloved husband, Jim Morrison; brother Dr. Lynn Carr and his children, Katie and Adam; and sister-in-law, Laura (Parks) Carr. She is survived by her three children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren: Dr. Jeff and Rachelle Morrison, of Colby, and their children, Jaden, wife Elizabeth and daughter Nora, of Marretta OH, Carter, of Tahlequah, OK, Darius, Kennedy and Campbell, of Colby; Mr. Scott Morrison, Topeka, and children, Jarrett, wife Cassidy and children Hazen, Levin and Callen; Jace and fiancé Allison; and Ardy, all of the Kansas City area; Lisa and children Amanda and Jonathan; grandson Eric Morrison and Nat of California; a sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Dr. Chuck Sourk, Scott City; brother, Dr. Neil Carr, Topeka; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2023, at Celebration Community Church, Colby, KS. Funeral Service is at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Celebration Community Church, with burial in Beulah Cemetery, Colby, KS.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and Christian. Born May 2, 1942, to Gordon and Sylvia (Houston) Carr of rural Colby, KS, Karen was the oldest of their four children. She grew up on the family farm, southeast of Colby, and attended Colby Public Schools, graduating in 1960. Lured by sophomore classmate Jim Morrison's repeated offerings of gum and candy, Karen and Jim began dating and eventually married on August 25, 1963, at the Gem Baptist Church. Like the original sticky and sweet enticements, Karen and Jim 'stuck together' for 47 years, strengthening and sweetening each other's lives, creating a loving family, enduring heartaches, and serving their community. To their marriage were born three sons: James Michael (1965-1986), Jeffrey Beckner (1967), and Jon Scott (1969). An adopted daughter Lisa joined the family in 1974. &nbsp;Melvin F. Wolf, 86, of Grinnell, died Wednesday, August 16, 2023, in Hays, KS. He was born March 6, 1937, in Gove County, KS, to Frederick and Mary (Meerian) Wolf. 

Melvin married Marlene Kaiser on November 8, 1958, in Park, KS. Melvin was a farmer and rancher. In his younger years, he enjoyed showing Charolais cattle with his wife Marlene. Melvin also worked for the City of Grinnell until his retirement and was on the Grinnell Fire Department.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Grinnell and the Knights of Columbus. 

In his free time, he liked playing cards, watching baseball, fishing and woodworking. Melvin never knew a stranger. He loved Sunday steak dinners at Steve’s, nightly chats with his daughter Pat and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marlene; daughter-in-law Brenda Wolf; granddaughter Ashley Wolf; siblings Jim (Elsie) Wolf, Mary Jean (Alan) Overton and Leon Wolf; brother-in-law Jerry Kaiser and sister-in-law Jennie Wolf. Melvin is survived by his five children, Rick (Marcie) Wolf, Pat (Dave) Farris, Steve Wolf, Tony (Judy) Wolf and Melanie (JR) Slayton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings Luetta Kaiser, Richard (Karen) Wolf, Daryl Wolf, Bernice (Mark) Rueschhoff and Dwayne (Linda Wolf) and sister-in-law Lynette Wolf.
