JETMORE– Jared J. Waterhouse, 45, passed away June 19, 2023 at St. Catherine Hospital Dodge City.

He was born March 22, 1978 in Dodge City, the son of Robert and Louise Ohman Waterhouse. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident, he worked in maintenance at Cargill.

Survivors include his father, Robert “Bob” Waterhouse, Jetmore; two sons, Jason Waterhouse, Jetmore and Caleb Waterhouse, Fort Hood, TX; two brothers, Brett Waterhouse, Jetmore and Scott Waterhouse, Guymon, OK.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2023 at Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Mary Joan Harvey (Schroeder) passed peacefully in Mt. Dora, Fla., on June 7, 2023, at the age of 93.

She was surrounded by family. Harvey was a native Kansan and was a long-time resident of Hays.

She is survived by sons Fred (Sheri – deceased), Mark (Lise), Steve (Karen), Paul (Susan – deceased), and James (Sarita) Harvey; daughters Marilyn Schumacher (Bob), and Barbara Schnose (Mark); and brothers Fulgence (Rita), Gerald Schroeder (Mary Lou), and Dan (Janet). She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Harvey married Thomas Larkin Harvey on June 7, 1952. They were married 57 years.

She was preceded in death by husband Thomas; parents Margaret (Arendt) and Charles Schroeder; brothers John, Anthony Leon (Antonetta Marie-deceased), Charles Martel (Eileen-deceased), and Nicholas Patrick (Judy); and sisters Delores Orten (Duane-deceased), Barbara Mindrup (Patrick (Joe)-deceased), and Rose Winkler (Donald-deceased); and grandson Jake Harvey.

Harvey was an alumna of Girls Catholic High School in Hays, and Saint Mary’s Nursing School in Manhattan, Kan. She worked as a registered nurse in Kansas until retirement and had a great love for her family, friends and her faith.

The funeral will take place at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Glen Alexander Doonan, 76, passed away June 18, 2023, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. &nbsp;He was born April 10, 1947, in Parsons, to Willard and Blanche (Schaffer) Doonan. &nbsp;Glen married Dorthy Hart Sept. 6, 1969, in Patuxent River, MD.&nbsp;

Glen, a Hoisington area resident since 1975 coming from Pratt and Great Bend, worked as a machinist for GBI for 26 years, retiring in 2001. &nbsp;During that time, he also owned and operated Glen's Place Bar and Grill. &nbsp;

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Knights of Columbus Council #1521 and was a Vietnam veteran of the United Stated Navy, obtaining the rank of E4 Petty Officer 3rd Class in the SeaWolf class. He was a tractor enthusiast and enjoyed fishing and lending a hand to his community of farmers. &nbsp;Above all, he was a man of faith and family.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Dorthy Doonan, of the home; two sons, Jeff Doonan of Hoisington, Wade Doonan and wife Sandy of Salina; one daughter, Lynn Andres and husband Merlyn of Solomon; one brother, Roy Doonan of Hutchinson; two sisters, Faye Doonan of Hoisington, and Darlene Stoss of Hoisington; six grandchildren, Jacob Andres and wife Jennifer, Shauna Andres, Alexis Miller and husband Conlan, Austin Doonan, Kacee Doonan and Bryce Doonan; one great-grandson, Benjamin Andres; and his beloved mutt, Hank.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by brother, Willard Ray “Butch” Doonan; and a brother-in-law, Ed Stoss.

Nila Mae (Breit) Winder, 82, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

The family will celebrate Nila's life at a later date with a memorial service to be held in Hays, Kansas.

Nila was born on July 24, 1940, in Pfeifer, Kansas, to the late Alois and Pauline Breit. Her story is one of love, family, and the joys of being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. For 43 years, she shared a deep and affectionate bond with her husband, Lawrence Eugene Winder, creating a life filled with cherished memories and a strong partnership.

Nila was a faithful member of St. Egbert Catholic Church. She was a devout Catholic woman who held strong to the beliefs that guided her life.

Nila had great satisfaction when working in the yard which was both fulfilling, and the result was rewarding. Whether she was gardening, landscaping, or simply spending time outdoors, it was certainly an enjoyable activity for her.

Collecting knickknacks was a fun hobby that Nila loved. Expressing her individuality, creativity, and appreciation for the things that caught her eye and sparked her curiosity, her collection was incredible along with the joy each trinket brought her.

Though she may no longer be with them in person, Nila's legacy of love will forever be cherished by her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters Kimberly Rice and husband George of Newport and Amy Barmann and husband Kyle of St. Joseph, MO; sisters Cora McCartney and husband Jerry of Garden City, KS and Judy Strecker and husband Richard of Wichita, KS; brother Ed Breit and wife Maryann of Hays, KS; grandchildren Phillip Recob, Whitney Smith, Collin Jackson, and Devon Jackson; and great-grandchildren Kaiden Jackson and Waylon Smith.

Vernon Robert “Bob” Waugh, Jr. of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Kansas Soldiers’ Home in Ft. Dodge, Kansas.

Bob was born on May 27, 1953, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Vernon Robert, Sr. and Mary H. (Glenn) Waugh. He grew up in Dighton, Kansas, and graduated from Dighton High School in the class of 1973. 

After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. 

He moved to Russell, Kansas, in 1981, and worked at the Russell City Power plant. He worked as a power plant operator for 15 years and worked for the Russell City Police for six years, working over 20 years for the City of Russell. 

He was a longtime member of the Calvary Chapel Assembly of God Church in Russell and a member of the First Congregational Church in Russell. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and American Hunting Club. He was a biology nut researching in his private time and enjoyed working with microscopes. He also enjoyed shooting sports and gardening.

He is survived by one brother, Brian Waugh, Sr. of Garden City, Kansas; and four sisters, Sally Waugh of Dighton, Kansas; Veronica Kennon (Blake Holloway) of Chandler, Texas; Christina Kerls of Topeka, Kansas; and Amanda Darcy (J.R.) of Spearville, Kansas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews: Jerry, Alex, Brian Jr., William, Trisha, Hunter, Brady, Harley, Adler, Evan, Noah, Harry, Emma Lee, Avery, Blake, Paislee, Paxton, and Justin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Robert “Bob” Waugh, Sr. and Mary Waugh, and by his brother Jack Waugh and sister Mary Lou Waugh.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the First Congregational Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 3:00 p.m.. on Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2023, at the Dighton Cemetery in Dighton, Kansas. Military honors will be presented by the Dighton American Legion and United States Marine Corps. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Stacey Schumacher Badger, 56, passed away on Jan. 16, 2023, in Salem, Oregon. She was born June 27, 1966, in Hays, the daughter of Leon Schumacher and Stephanie Jacobs Schumacher.

Stacey was a graduate of the class of 1984 from Hays High School. She then attended Kansas State University from 1984 to 1988, where she earned two bachelor’s degrees: one in Spanish and another in journalism and mass communications.

Her senior year at Kansas State, Stacey was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and went on to graduate cum laude. Not long after graduating with her bachelor’s degrees, she made the decision to study law and attended the University of Kansas where she graduated in 1993 with a Juris Doctor degree.

Stacey soon began her legal career in Carbondale, Ill., where she worked as a legal intern for the Illinois Migrant Legal Assistance Project (IMLAP), performing outreach and providing legal assistance to migrant farmworkers there.

In 1996, she made the move to Chicago; to work as a staff attorney with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago (LAF), an organization that provides legal services to the economically disadvantaged. She eventually returned to work for IMLAP again, but this time in the role of staff attorney. Stacey was very passionate about advocating for the disadvantaged and marginalized in society. Because she was a fluent Spanish speaker, her position as staff attorney at IMLAP advocating for the rights of migrant farm workers was a perfect fit for her.

After a life-changing diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1999, Stacey’s path changed significantly. She left her job at the Migrant Legal Assistance Project and accepted a position as a corporate immigration attorney with the Chicago law firm Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen and Loewy; where she worked until 2003.

In 2003, following her heart, she made a bold decision to leave behind her life as a corporate lawyer in Chicago, and instead, forged a new path for herself in Tucson, Ariz., where she moved in spring 2004. Arizona was a new beginning for Stacey and along with that brave move came many new life adventures, new job opportunities, and most importantly a new love, Don Badger. Stacey and Don, both practicing Buddhists, met at a local Buddhist meeting in Tucson in 2004. Soon after, they started dating, fell in love, and were later married on Feb. 26, 2006. Don was the love of Stacey’s life and the two lived happily together in Scottsdale, Ariz., until Don’s untimely death in January 2009.

Stacey continued to live in the Scottsdale area for several years after Don’s passing. Unfortunately, during that time, her MS progressed significantly, making everyday life more difficult for her to navigate alone. In 2014, she was introduced to Scott Belmont by a mutual friend from the Buddhist community in Scottsdale. The two hit it off instantly and quickly became a couple. In April of 2015, Stacey and Scott moved to Salem, Oregon, to escape the Arizona heat, where they continued to live together until Stacey’s recent hospitalization and subsequent passing.

Stacey was very much a citizen of the world and had many different interests and passions. She loved music of all kinds and had an extensive collection. Not only did she love listening to great music, Stacey also loved to sing. In high school she sang in the Pop Singers, Acapella Choir and performed in several musicals. She also loved to travel and made several trips to Mexico over the years, even attending the university in Jalapa, Veracruz, one summer. She visited Cuba, Guatemala, Brazil and on more than one occasion, Peru.

Stacey loved reading and, even more, writing. She was, in fact, an author. She wrote and released her own memoir, "The Invisible Cause," in 2011, which tells the story of her life and particularly recounts her struggles and perseverance after receiving the MS diagnosis in 1999 and the sudden passing of her husband, Don, in 2009.

Stacey Badger was a very spiritual person. She spent her lifetime working on healing and bettering herself in every way possible. She had a ‘never- give-up mentality,' and she practiced it until the end. We admire and miss her greatly.

An inurnment will take place at 1:00, Saturday, June 24th, at the Saint Francis Cemetery in Munjor, Kansas, to be followed by a celebration of Stacey’s life at 2:00 at the V.F.W. in Hays, Kansas. All family and friends are welcome.

Carole Ann Zerr, age 85, of Quinter, KS, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the Sheridan County Hospital, Hoxie, KS. 

Services will be held on Monday, July 10 at 10 a.m. at the Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, KS. Burial will take place at the Baker Township Cemetery in Quinter immediately following the service. Lunch will be served directly following the service, at the Eagles Lodge in WaKeeney.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Garry Zerr, parents Laurence and Elba Berry, sisters Audine (Dale) Richards, Donna (Jim) Dugan, and brother Larry (Reva) Berry. 

She is survived by her children Denise Billinger, Russell, KS, Julie (Jerry) Tynon, Kansas City, MO, Carla Bujnoch, Van Vleck TX, Paula Buchholz, Quinter KS, and Blaine (Stephanie) Buchholz, WaKeeney KS; grandchildren Brandon Knipp and wife Shelby, Russell, KS, Amanda Bujnoch, Kansas City, MO, Demi Bujnoch, Bay City, TX, Austin (Kyley) Wancura, Colby, KS; and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Mason, Braxton and Skye Knipp, Alexandria, Onykah, and Krysta Bujnoch, and Evan Wancura. A favorite past time of hers was bowling. She bowled in local leagues for many years and traveled to state tournaments with her teams across Kansas and even went on a trip to Reno, NV for the nationals by train. One of the highlights of her bowling career was when she received her Grand Duchess pin at state for still bowling at the age of 70.

From a young age Carole worked at her parent's restaurants in Quinter and Plainville. She also spent many years as a cook and waitress in restaurants around WaKeeney.

Carole was always glad when her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit her. She’d always try and find something to feed them. They all loved it when she cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and, boy, could she make awesome pies!

Donald Dean Ginther, 86, of Luray, Kansas, died surrounded by his family, on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Donald was born on February 9, 1937, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Alex S. and Helen Arlene (Schmidt) Ginther. 

He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1955. He joined the United States National Guard, serving his country for several years. 

He met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Simone Marie Urban on February 04, 1961, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas. From this union Donald and Simone was blessed with six children Tom, Kathy, Marlene, Joyce, Donna and Kenneth. 

He worked as a farmer and rancher and loved tending to his farm and being outdoors. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. He was a member of the Waldo Volunteer Fire Department, the Natoma, Paradise and Waldo School Board and Waldo Township Board. He enjoyed fishing, farm animals, University of Kansas basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and many grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife of 62 years, Simone of the home; son Tom Ginther (Theresa) of Luray, Kansas; daughters Kathy Moravek (John) of Hays, Kansas, Marlene Miller (Mike) of Canton-Galva, Kansas, Joyce Webb (Russell) of Minneapolis, Kansas and Donna Dirks (Eric) of Lorraine, Kansas; brothers Milt Ginther and Glenn Ginther (Daisy) all of Russell, Kansas and Elnora Boatright (Bob) of Lawrence, Kansas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Kenneth Ginther, brothers Dwain and Allen Ginther.

A celebration of Donald’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 23, 2023, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas. Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday June 22, 2023, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

John E. Liggett, 90, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

John was born December 26, 1932, in Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Jerry Simpson and Edna Mae (West) Liggett. &nbsp;He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. &nbsp;

A 1950 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he was employed for 43 years by Farmer’s Co-op, Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;The last 28 years, he was the general manager before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, previously serving as a lector and church greeter, and American Legion Post #0033, both of La Crosse, Kansas. &nbsp;He was also a member of Walnut Valley Senior Center, Walnut Valley Masonic Lodge #215, and a longtime member of the Rush Center Pinochle Club, all of Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;He was a former board member for Center Township, and a former cemetery sexton for Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;John was a proud La Crosse Leopards supporter and a school bus driver for 13 years for the Leopards/USD #395.

John loved gardening, fishing, golfing and playing softball. &nbsp;He was a passionate KU Jayhawks and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Every year the family Christmas tree was lovingly set up and decorated by John.

On May 20, 1957, he married Rita I. Depperschmidt at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include&nbsp; his wife, Rita Liggett, Rush Center, Kansas; two sons, Jeff Liggett (Kathleen), Parker, Colorado, and Allan Liggett (Brooke), Springfield, Missouri; one &nbsp;daughter, Lorna Herrman (Carl), La Crosse, Kansas; six grandchildren, John Gilbert Herrman (Kyle), Megan Hernandez (Ziv), Tyler Liggett, Catherine Liggett, Kennedy Liggett, and Monroe Liggett; six great-grandchildren, Selah Herrman, Carl Herrman, Gavan Middleton, John Eric Herrman, Claire Herrman, and Jax Hernandez; and one sister, Judy McCoy, Overland Park, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vernon Leroy Liggett, Duane A. “Jake” Liggett, and Donald L. “Donnie” Liggett; and three sisters, Doris Witthuhn, Sharon Mendenhall, and Lorna Mae Liggett.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 18, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Liggett, 90, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.John was born December 26, 1932, in Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Jerry Simpson and Edna Mae (West) Liggett. &nbsp;He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. &nbsp;A 1950 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he was employed for 43 years by Farmer’s Co-op, Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;The last 28 years, he was the general manager before his retirement.He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, previously serving as a lector and church greeter, and American Legion Post #0033, both of La Crosse, Kansas. &nbsp;He was also a member of Walnut Valley Senior Center, Walnut Valley Masonic Lodge #215, and a longtime member of the Rush Center Pinochle Club, all of Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;He was a former board member for Center Township, and a former cemetery sexton for Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, Kansas. &nbsp;John was a proud La Crosse Leopards supporter and a school bus driver for 13 years for the Leopards/USD #395.John loved gardening, fishing, golfing and playing softball. &nbsp;He was a passionate KU Jayhawks and St. Louis Cardinals fan.Every year the family Christmas tree was lovingly set up and decorated by John.On May 20, 1957, he married Rita I. Irene Gittinger, age 90, stepped forth from her Earthly home on June 12, 2023. While the void she leaves is vast, she is not part of the past.&nbsp; Irene, no longer bound by body or disease, continues her journey as a conduit of love uniting those of us who mourn with family who has gone before.&nbsp; In death, as in life, she remains the matriarch who gently calls together the family to which she devoted her life.

Irene was a quilter in spirit, not merely skill and craft. While many can quilt with fabric, finding the pattern and symmetry within the pieces of life is a special gift. Irene used threads of love to stitch together the people, places, and events of 90 years. Within the folds of her quilt is a place for all and a connection between all. In Irene’s quilt, there is unconditional love and space; space to dance, laugh, celebrate, struggle, endure, weep, and mourn.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Irene, the daughter of Herman and Elizabeth (Weis) Gebhards, was born in Weskan, Kansas, on April 6, 1933.&nbsp; She spent her childhood working, playing, and pranking her four siblings on the family farm in Weskan. Her expansive heart, deep roots, and ability to yield to the storms of life and recover are reminiscent of the prairie she loved.&nbsp;

Irene married Robert Gittinger, the love of her life, on August 15, 1954.&nbsp; The couple moved to Goodland, where they had four children. In 1973 the family moved to Kismet when Robert took a position at the Liberal Area VoTech.&nbsp;

In addition to quilting, Irene enjoyed baking, birding, gardening, and genealogy. The family always looked forward to her latest cookie and the newest story she had stumbled upon from the family tree.&nbsp; A hummingbird sighting will always bring a smile as we recall how she delighted in them.

&nbsp;Throughout her life, Irene was a wife and mother devoted to her family, the counted-on neighbor, the trusted friend, the cherished mother-in-law, and the adored grandma who was always ready with a project and a soda float.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Irene moved to Goodland, KS, in 2014, where she resided at Wheat Ridge Acres. In 2019, Irene moved to Coffeyville, KS, and resided at Medicalodge until she was called to her eternal home.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Her four children survive Irene; Kendall Gittinger and wife Marilyn of Hays, KS; Bob Gittinger and wife Catina of Goodland, KS;&nbsp; Mona Gittinger of Coffeyville, KS; Kurt Gittinger and wife Susan of Overland Park, KS.; eight grandchildren: Amanda Gittinger, Aaron Gittinger, Tim Gittinger, Rachel Gittinger, Anne Gittinger, Jamie Gittinger, Abbie Gittinger, Jesse Rine; 3 great-grandchildren: Aiden Gittinger, Ivy Gittinger, Betsy Gittinger; one great-grandchild soon make his debut.

Phillipsburg resident, Donna Kaye Gitchel, passed away June 13, 2023 at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, NE at the age of 60.

Donna Kaye (Schumacher) Gitchel was born February 4, 1963 to Bessie Arlene (Kendall) Schumacher and Buddy Duane Vinsonhaler in Phillipsburg, KS. She lived in Phillipsburg her whole life. As a child Donna loved to spend time with her sister, Jeanie, and the cousins who lived nearby. 

She attended school in Phillipsburg from kindergarten through high school.&nbsp;

Donna started dating Terry Lynn Gitchel &nbsp;in 1977 and they were married on Oct. 23, 1982. From this union came three daughters: Tara Rachel, Karma Kaye, and Shelby Maray. Later their niece Kim lived with them for a time and became like another daughter. Throughout the years, many others spent a lot of time at Donna and Terry's house and considered it a second home.&nbsp;

She worked in many areas of the community throughout the years. Donna worked as a secretary at the National Guard Armory, and as a CNA at the nursing home prior to starting a family. Then, when the girls were young, she worked in the school cafeteria to have the same schedule as the girls. She also worked at Dollar General, Loves, and Third Street Bakery for a time. Donna ran a professional cleaning business for a while as well. She also babysat and considered those kids like her own. One of her favorite jobs was running the bowling alley until it closed. Most recently Donna worked as a custodian and in the cafeteria at the school. She loved spending time with kids in many capacities.

Outside of work, Donna spent many years leading Girl Scout troops and coaching softball. She hosted some of the best sleepovers and made amazing birthday cakes. She played mud volleyball for the TAMKO Tornados and took every chance she could find to have fun with friends. She also attended many sporting events and performances for her kids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and others in the community who asked her to come. She loved playing card games, whether it was Uno and Phase Ten with the grandkids or pitch with friends. She also loved to go hunting and fishing with Terry. Many summer days were spent at the lake camping and water skiing, which Donna was proud of considering her bad knee. She also loved riding horses, riding motorcycles, two-stepping around the dance floor, watching Terry race, traveling to numerous rodeos, and spending time with loved ones.&nbsp;

Donna is well known for her decorative cakes be it for a birthday party, baby shower, or other parties. Many have requested her frog-eye salad, taco salad, bierocks, and cheese cakes among many other treats throughout the years. You were never hungry at her house. She also spent much time teaching Sunday school and doing vacation bible school.&nbsp;

Donna died at Kearney Regional Hospital, Kearney, NE on June 13 at the age of 60. 

Donna was preceded in death by her husband Terry Gitchel, her mother Bessie Schumacher, her father Duane Vinsonhaler, her in-laws Melvin and Louise (Johnson) Gitchel, granddaughter Jordyn Doty, niece Shay Gitchel, and many others. 

She is survived by her daughter Tara Burnham and husband Robin of Overbrook, KS; daughter Karma Steelsmith and husband Ron of Phillipsburg, KS; daughter Shelby Thomas and husband Andrew of Leavenworth, KS; niece who is like a daughter Kim Krebs and husband Fritz of Atwood, KS; sister Jeanie Scharper and husband Anthony of Mahaska, KS; sister Mary Reiter and husband Kenny of Mankato, KS; sister Shirley Bradley of Tulsa, OK; her grandchildren Halie, Kennedy, Kihyna, Wyatt, Tehya, Kameron, Garyn, Kymber, Edwyn, Kendryck, and Waelyn; her great-granddaughter Everlee; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law Merry Reeh, Dennis and Sandra Johnson, Ralph, Roy and Rick Gitchel, Sue and Bean Lacey and Don Gitchel; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jay Brandon officiating. &nbsp;The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Thursday and 12:00 to 9:00 Friday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Donna Kaye Gitchel

Martin Junior Bayens, age 84, son of Martin and Nellie (Kats) Bayens was born on December 23, 1938 in Denver, Colorado. &nbsp;

He grew up on the family farm near Long Island, Kansas where he attended Jackson country school until the third grade. &nbsp;He then transferred to Long Island where he graduated from high school in 1957.

In 1960, he joined the National Guard and went through basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. &nbsp;

After high school he continued to farm on the family farmstead with his parents, which was designated a Kansas Farm Bureau century farm and also awarded the Phillips County Farmer’s Conservation award in 1973. &nbsp;He periodically worked at the Norton Sale Barn. &nbsp;He also served on the Phillips County Farm Bureau board for a few years. &nbsp;

Martin’s life was centered around his love of God, family and farming. &nbsp;He was a member of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday school for older elementary students for several years and served as a deacon. &nbsp; He was also very involved with the local chapter of Gideons and strongly believed in the distribution of God’s word with bibles provided by the Gideons. &nbsp;Martin volunteered much of his time to serving the Phillipsburg community through the Phillipsburg Ministerial Alliance community events.&nbsp;

His final months were spent in the Andbe Home in Norton, KS. Martin went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 12, 2023. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Beverly. &nbsp;

Those who are left to cherish his memories are his sister Joyce and her husband Marion Tien of Prairie View, KS; sister Janice and her husband Harold Veltkamp of Holland, MN; sister Sharon and her husband David Stewart of Aurora, CO and many nieces and nephews of who he was very proud.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Darrel Kats officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Wed. and 9:00 to 9:00 Thurs. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thurs.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons or the Long Island American Legion.

Martin went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 12, 2023. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Beverly. &nbsp;Those who are left to cherish his memories are his sister Joyce and her husband Marion Tien of Prairie View, KS; sister Janice and her husband Harold Veltkamp of Holland, MN; sister Sharon and her husband David Stewart of Aurora, CO and many nieces and nephews of who he was very proud.&nbsp;Funeral services will be held Friday, June 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Darrel Kats officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Wed. and 9:00 to 9:00 Thurs. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thurs.Memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons or the Long Island American Legion.

Oren Dale Chrisler, 93, of Russell, KS, passed peacefully to be with our Lord, Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Wheatland Nursing Home in Russell, after a prolonged illness. Dale was born January 29, 1930, at his home in Fairport, KS to George Oren and Hettie Belle&nbsp;(McConnell) Chrisler. Brother Duane Chrisler welcomed Dale home.

He attended Codell schools and graduated in 1947. He enjoyed football, basketball, softball, and woodshop. He attended Fort Hays State University for one year and participated with the rodeo team, bull and bronco riding. 

He then joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Key West, FL on the USS Corporal submarine from 1948 through 1949. 

Dale returned home and met the love of his life Frances Jean Van Eaton, a teacher from Russell, KS. They moved to Monument, KS where he helped build the elevators there, then on to Plainville, KS where he was a carpenter and built many of the homes still there. He became involved in the oilfield while there and transferred to Great Bend, KS and in 1960 to Russell, KS. In 1961 he opened up Dale's Pump &amp; Supply. He loved the oilfield and for 20 years repaired pumps and helped in numerous other aspects of the oilfield. 

He loved to hunt and fish, participating in the dog trials on Dr. Starkey’s ground and training the dogs. He took his family fishing and needless to say probably baited more hooks with worms than you can imagine for six kids. Just always saying keep the cane pole in the water till the bobber goes under. 

He loved his wife and family more than life itself. 

Always helping with recreation ball teams in the summer, playing bridge, fishing, helping Chris and Monte with Boy Scouts and the famous Pinewood Derby Races, and taking the boat to the lake. Mama's Mink was her name and would pull five at a time water skiing. He was the best of the best. 

In the early 1980s he had the chance to fulfill the dream of his life, a horse ranch. Dale, Jean, and Angie moved to Oakley, KS and bought the Hilltop Haven Paint and Quarter Horse Ranch. He held many roping events, raised his horses, and had the time of his life. He also was involved again in the oilfield, sitting on wells, and finishing them. He trained many other men to follow in his footsteps until the age of 90 when he semi-retired. Dale sold the ranch and retired to Oakley, until moving to Russell at Wheatland Nursing home in January of 2022. Some of his kids’ best memories of growing up were Sunday mornings coming home from church and the house smelled of homemade chocolate cake made by Dale, always barbecuing in the backyard, and Sunday nights curling the girls’ hair with sponge curlers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Hettie Belle Chrisler, Codell, KS; brother Duane and sister-in-law Pat Chrisler of Winfield, KS; and daughter-in-law Carma Geibler Chrisler of Hays. He leaves behind wife of 71 years, Jean Chrisler, Russell; seven children, Regina Chrisler, Russell, Glenna (Ronald) Letsch, of Luray, Chris Chrisler, Hays, Janelda Jo Manning (Eddie), of Oakley, Tina Hekele (Joseph), Odin, Ks, Monte Chrisler, Oakley and Angela Chrisler of Oakley; 10 grandchildren, Stacey Dumler (CJ), Mike Chrisler (Katie), Joseph Hekele (Traci), Jennifer Love (Michael), Julie Letsch, Beau Hekele (Char), Jenna Kelman (Matthew), Brady Chrisler (Lucas), Brett Chrisler (Sam), and Bailee Chrisler; great-grandchildren Javon Letsch, Brooklyn, Aiden and Lynden Hekele, Drew, Colin and Daxton Hekele, Brecken and Kash Kelman, Riley, Jethro, Thomas and Zane Chrisler. Cremation has been chosen and services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley, KS. Inurnment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Oakley.

Agnes Fae (Kathka) Urban, 84, of Valley Center, KS passed away on June 13, 2023, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. Agnes was born in Oberlin, KS to Gustave and Pearl Kathka on September 9, 1938. She went to school at Decatur County High School in Oberlin.

She left school to marry John Urban on June 25, 1956, and moved to a farm north of Colby, KS, where she enjoyed being a farmer’s wife, from raising baby calves who had lost their mothers, to baby chickens, and their six children, Daniel, Christine, Rocky, Marvin and Marlene and Linda. 

After the children were grown, she went to work at the Thomas County Hospital in the nursery taking care of newborns, followed by employment with Head Start helping little children prepare for school teaching them to read and write. Agnes concluded her employment by retiring from Walmart. 

One of her greatest achievements was going back to school and getting her high school diploma. Upon her retirement and the passing of her husband, she moved to Valley Center to be closer to her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband John; daughter-in-law Maggie Taylor (Daniel Urban) and their son Vance Pentico; son-in-law Donald Belknap; her parents, and various brothers, sister, and brothers/sisters-in-law. Agnes is survived by her children, Daniel Urban, Colby, KS, Christine Belknap, Valley Center, KS, Rocky (Cheryl Barnett) Urban, Colby, KS, Marvin (Martina) Urban, Colby, KS, Marlene (Len) Ritnour, Roca, NE, and Linda (Doug) Adwell, Valley Center, KS; grandchildren Darren, Logan (fiance Taylor) and Denae Adwell, of Valley Center, KS, Andrew (Rose) Urban, Fort Collins, CO, Christall Ritnour, Lincoln, NE, Spencer and Shelbie Ritnour, Roca, NE, Tresta (Dalton) Arntt, Goodland, KS and Rachel Urban, Denver, CO; great-grandchildren Callie, Carson, Wyatt and Emmett Urban, Fort Collins, CO. Jarrod Lee Harper, 39 was born July 2, 1983 to Randy &amp; Judy (Toll) Harper in Hill City Kansas. He passed away June 12, 2023 as the result of a car accident in rural Graham County. 

He attended Hill City Grade School and Longfellow Middle School. Jarrod graduated from Hill City High School with the class of 2002. 

On January 2, 2010, Jarrod was united in marriage to Michaela Morris at the Hill City Christian Church. Jarrod was blessed with the privilege of being the dad to two sons, Joshua and Shawn, who meant the world to him.

 Jarrod was a member of the Spring Creek Hustlers 4-H club growing up and took a liking to shooting sports. He learned the skills needed and enjoyed hunting with his dad and grandpa. With hunting being a favorite pastime, the formation of the Legacy Lodge brotherhood was born in 2008. Starting with three OGR’s (Old Guys Rule) and adding five sons and now grandsons with Josh starting the 3rd generation to be followed by several more. The comradery of Legacy Lodge has continued to roll on for 15 years. Pit BBQs and cooking adventures have always been entertaining at the lodge, you of course had to cook up the fresh birds that had been bagged from the day. The stories and lies run rampant! There are so many memories from couch surfing to fire pit dancing. As a brother stated, he will always be the roof pull up champion and the best shot of all the young guys, our numbers will definitely go down without him. 

The oilfield grabbed Jarrod’s attention and was a place he found many friendships over the years with employment for various companies. He was never afraid to work or lend a helping hand. He could definitely throw chain and latch pipe with the best of them! 

Jarrod had a passion for coaching the kids, especially his own, whether it was soccer or baseball or anything giving positive encouragement to all. The golf course was often where you would find Jarrod, either playing multiple rounds of golf or just hitting and chipping for practice. He was always up for playing any course within driving distance or even spent hours chipping in the back yard. He enjoyed playing in a tournament or being on a team at Tuesday Night Men’s golf. He gained many new acquaintances and enjoyed playing with anyone. 

He was preceded in death by his uncle Karl “Curly” Toll, maternal grandparents Lee and Marjorie Toll, paternal grandparents Glenn and Velma Harper. 

He is survived by his wife Michaela, his sons Joshua and Shawn all of Hill City; his parents Randy and Judy Harper of Hill City; his sister Tracy (Mike) Paxson and his niece Baylor Paxson of Lincoln NE and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins &amp; friends.
