RUSSELL—Dean Henry Boxberger, 92, of Russell passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at Main Street Manor in Russell. Dean passed peacefully with family by his side, 24 days after the passing of his wife of 69 years, Betty.

Dean was born on Oct. 22, 1930, in Russell, the son of Solomon and Elfreda (Reinhardt, Boxberger) Stenzel. He grew up and attended schools in Russell, graduating from Russell High School in 1948. Dean was baptized in the Lutheran church in Milberger and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church, Russell. He met and fell in love with Betty Ann Balloun. After a seven-week courtship, they were united in marriage on May 16, 1954, in St John Lutheran Church. From this union, they were blessed with five sons: Matthew, Mark, Thomas, Timothy and Scott. Dean and Betty shared 69 years of married life together.

Dean loved the land and was a farmer and rancher all his life. He farmed for many years with his brother Raymond in Russell and Gove counties and then on his own on the family farm south of Russell. He also worked in the oilfield and drove the activity bus for USD 407 for 35 years. Dean served his country in the Kansas National Guard, Russell County as a commissioner for 10 years and Grant Township as treasurer. He was an active member of St John Lutheran Church, serving on the council as treasurer and ushering and greeting at worship services. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine and Russell Elks Lodge.

Dean was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed sports, hunting, bowling, playing cards and chatting over coffee with his friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife Betty Ann (Balloun); his parents; brother Raymond E. Boxberger; sister DorLeen (Boxberger) Hunter; and sister-in-law Celia Boxberger.

Survivors include sons, Matthew Boxberger (Genevieve) of San Jose, Calif., Mark Boxberger (Amy) of Noblesville, Ind., Thomas Boxberger (Sheri) of Lawrence, Timothy Boxberger (Dylan Palma) of Russell, and Scott Boxberger (Desiree) of Overland Park; grandchildren, George, Joe, Betsy (Karim Khalil), Jakob, Elyse, Gretchen, Cassie, Joshua, and Jenna; great-grandson, Rami; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Dean’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church. A private family burial will be at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Eugene Donald “Gene” Karst, 88, of Russell, passed away on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Gene was born on April 4, 1935, in Galatia. He was the son of Theodore and Rebecca (Morgenstern) Karst. At the age of 10, his family moved to Russell where he attended schools. He graduated from Russell High School in 1953. He then attended two years at Fort Hays State University.

Gene was united in marriage to Janice (Langhofer) Jack on March 22, 1953. This union was blessed with three sons Steven, Darrell and Audie. Later, Gene and Janice divorced. He was united in marriage to Vera F. Stewart on Aug. 24, 1971. They made their home in Russell. Vera preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2009. Later, he developed a close relationship with Carol McKenna.

Gene was the owner and operator of the Gene’s Service Station in Russell from 1964 to 2000 when he retired. He also owned the Handy Car Wash and Easy Muffler Shops located mainly in western Kansas. He was a professional Photographer and did many shoots for Race Way Photos. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Russell. He also belonged to the Russell Elks Lodge, the Amateur Trap Shooting Association and the Kansas Trap Shooters. He had many hobbies throughout his life being an owner and pilot of many planes, restoring vintage cars, raising bird dogs, hunting, golfing and collecting guns.

Gene’s surviving family includes his two sons, Steven Karst (Deb) of Russell and Darrell Karst of Russell; step-children, Terry Branick (Joe) of Overland Park, and Clay (Karen) Stewart of Great Bend; companion, Carol McKenna of Russell; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; son, Audie Karst; sister, Lillian (Karst) Shelton; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Gene will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Gene’s name has been established with Russell Youth Trap Shooting Team in care of Pohlman-Varner- Peeler.

GARDEN CITY—Joanne Werner, 91, died on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City.

She was born on July 3, 1932, at Canyon, Texas, the daughter of Lawrence Jacob &amp; Julia (Frary) Fulton Sr.

She married Wesley Werner on Nov. 21, 1951, at Garden City. Joanne attended school at Canyon, Texas, and graduated high school from Wildorado, Texas, High School. She then graduated from West Texas A&amp;M University in Canyon, Texas.

After her marriage, they moved to Garden City where she worked at Dairy Queen and John’s Motors before becoming a farm wife with her husband on the family farm. She later was a cook at the Garden City Police Department, worked at IBP and was a subpara for the Garden City School District.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and past member of the Lions Club, Gray County EHU. She enjoyed cooking and gardening but most of all being involved with her family activities.

She is survived by her husband Wesley Werner, son David and Wendy Werner of Neosho, Mo.; three grandchildren Kira and Austin Mitchell of Joplin, Mo., Aaron Abrigo of Summerville, Tenn., and Amber Towns of Garden City; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two daughters Patricia Werner and Marjorie Abrigo, two sisters and two brothers.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev Jim Akins officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Joann Werner Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Larry Laurence Nutting, 84, passed away Aug. 28, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. He was born Dec. 25, 1938, in Haskell County, Kansas, to Harlie Edwin and Helen Luticia (Sanders) Nutting. He married Dorothy Welsch Feb. 14, 1960, in Kinsley.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend resident, Larry was the director of manufacturing for Cross Manufacturing, Lewis, and Fuller Brush Industries, Great Bend, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kinsley and attended Encounter Church in Great Bend. He taught Sunday School and was passionate about spreading the Good News of Christ’s Salvation through his membership of Gideons International. Larry was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Royal Rangers Leader and enjoyed nature, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of the home; a daughter, Lori Katz and husband Randy of Wichita; two sons of the heart, Mark Welsch and Troy Welsch; a brother, Michael Nutting (Carla) of Crosby, Texas; a sister, Rita Giles of Saskatchewan, Canada; two grandchildren, Tara Katz (Tyson Bean) and Kelsey Aitchison (Samuel); and one great-grandson, Asher Aitchison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Harlie Nutting Jr.; and a sister, Eleanor Smith.&nbsp;

Robert Charley “Basswood Bob” Oliva (62) was born on Sept. 27, 1960, in Plainville, to Ruth Lee (Price) and Charley Robert Oliva. Tragically, Bob lost his life in an automobile accident near his home in Ely, Minn., on Aug. 24, 2023.&nbsp;

Raised in Russell, Bob was no stranger to adventures with his siblings. From a young age, you could find him making any excuse to visit Lake Wilson to fish or water ski. He continued his passion for the outdoors as a member of the local Boy Scout troop, where he made memories each year, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1979.

Bob graduated from Russell High School in 1979 and from Pittsburgh State University in 1983. He gained the skills and knowledge of an experienced carpenter and was known for his attention to detail and love for the craft.&nbsp;

Bob was a cherished member of the Ely community. His passion for the outdoors led him to create lasting memories for others through guided fishing tours, which started in the 1980s when he was employed by Charles L Sommers Canoe Base and dogsledding tours on the Boundary Waters. He was also a handyman and carpenter.&nbsp;

Bob will be remembered for his warm-hearted nature, his sense of adventure, his sly sense of humor, and his commitment to sharing the beauty of the wilderness with others. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, exploration and a deep connection to the natural world, having spent his final days with several of his siblings doing what he loved.

Proceeding in his death are his parents, and adoptive father, Boyd Knackstedt. Bob leaves behind his adoptive mother June Knackstedt, Russell, and eight siblings – Bud Knackstedt, Russell; Nancy (Wayne) Woodyard, Hutchinson; Dennis (Beth) Knackstedt, Golden, Mo.; James (Debra) Oliva, Topeka; Barbara Volle, Axtell; David Goza, Deborah (Don) Johnson, and Alvin Goza, Emporia; and many other family members, friends, and neighbors. Although he had no children, Bob proudly cared for many huskies in his life, most recently Vera and Ima who have been re-homed in the community.

Services for Bob will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.

Almena Resident, Forrest "Jim" Ruth, passed away, peacefully in his home, on Aug. 29, 2023, at the age of 72.&nbsp;

Forrest James Ruth was born on June 21, 1951, in Thornton, Colo., to his parents Forrest and Opal (Brown) Ruth.

He was married to Marla (Miller) Ruth on Oct. 26, 1987, in Norton.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents Forrest and Opal Ruth.

Survivors include his wife Marla Ruth of Almena, sons Jeremy Ruth and wife Joni of Kearney, Neb., and Troy Ruth of Almena, daughter Sammye Clark and husband Andrew of Georgetown, Texas, stepsons Christopher Wentz of Beaumont, Calif., and Erik Wentz of Cheyenne, Wyo., sister Shirley Moore of Orlando Fla., as well as nine grandchildren: Camile, Jamie, Tahpanga, Hunter, Alura, Ella, Charlye, Martin, and Tommy and three great-grandchildren.

Norma J. Schmidtberger, 87, of Overland Park, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9405 Mission Road, Leawood. Christian Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa.

Norma was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Rush County, the daughter of Wendelin and Pauline (Urban) Schmidt. She was a member of Cure of Ars Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin in 2007, a son, Dale, in 2003, and sisters Margola and Melba, and brother Wendelin Jr.

Norma is survived by two daughters, Linda Coffee and husband Bill, Olathe, Sandy Mulvany and husband Tim, Roeland Park; daughter-in-law, Elaine Schmidtberger, Overland Park; and a son, Greg Schmidtberger and wife Lois, Edgerton; brothers, Irvin Schmidt, Wichita; Leon Schmidt and wife, Roseann, Wichita; Gary Schmidt and wife, Karen, Hot Springs, Melvin and wife, Connie, Victoria; and sister-in-law, Catherine Schmidt, Wichita; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Norma grew up in western Kansas in the small German Catholic farming community of Pfeifer, just south of Hays. Raised with a sister and five brothers, they grew up hard working with a strong family bond and faith that they have passed on through the generations. She is proud to be from the home of one of the prettiest churches in Kansas, The Holy Cross Shrine.

Norma married her husband of 53 years, Marvin Schmidtberger, in a double wedding ceremony along with her sister Melba to Marvin’s brother Leroy. One of the families’ favorite stories to tell...Leroy was planning to marry Melba and their mom said to our dad, “If Leroy is getting married, you might as well marry Norma." The double wedding celebration was on, and the two couples were best of friends for life!

Norma spent her young married life raising four children in Mission, Kan., working as a cashier for area grocery stores and participating in parish life at St. Pius X. Guided by their own faith and strong work ethic, she and Marvin saw to it that the children were raised in a Catholic environment sending them to St. Pius X Elementary and Bishop Miege High Schools. As the kids attended high school, Norma used her cashier skills to own and operate the family convenience store “Handi Mart” just down the road from Lake Quivira. She finished her working career with Cardinal Office Supply in Mission, leaving to start many hours of babysitting as the grandchildren began to multiply.

One of the families’ fondest memories of our mom was her cooking. She loved preparing meals!! The recipe traditions she learned as a child in a large household prepared her to mostly memorize everything she cooked…many with interesting names: kaselabba (cheese sacks), the Schmidt family favorite, bierochs, galuskies, knoedel, kald shunka, schwartzberren kucken—all German names we could not pronounce, but all delicious! She was always baking and continued to send her famous cinnamon rolls with Dale’s lake buddies every year after his death in 2003. They always made a special trip to visit her and, of course, pick up the goodies! We always encouraged her to start her own catering company named “This Food Tastes like Schmidt." Her cooking will be missed, and we can only hope to carry on the tradition and figure out the recipes.

She loved the arrival of the casinos in Kansas City and would frequent them whenever given the chance. Family visits from her many brothers often found them all spending the night at one of the casinos. She loved to be in a crowd and cherished all the family reunions, weddings, and many events that brought the entire family together in Kansas City, Pfeifer and Wichita.

Growing up around the Schmidt and Schmidtberger clan, Norma developed a quick wit to deal with the onery men!! She kept us all laughing with her sarcasm and great sense of humor.

Mom was a beloved homemaker that held her family first in her heart. She had a strong faith, and it was rare to see her without a rosary in her hand. Her faith should be a reminder for all to follow and it helped her through life’s hardest moments. All who knew her loved her outgoing personality and knew she was always there to join in the fun, a good conversation or lend a helping hand. She simply loved to be around people.

KENSINGTON – Howard H. Grauerholz, age 91, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at Smith Center Health &amp; Rehab in Smith Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Jeffrey Dean.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Amy (Bob) Bienhoff of Kensington; a son Bruce (Lisa) Grauerholz of Hildreth, Neb.

Glenn Bird, 92, of Quinter, went to his heavenly home for which he longed on Thursday, Aug. 24 in Wichita. Glenn was born on Sept. 6, 1930, in Brandon, Colo., to John and Ruby Walker Bird. As a young boy, he moved to a farm south of Quinter. Glenn had two younger brothers, Gary and Roye, and a sister, Lois, who died at an early age.

He enjoyed sports in school, participating in football, basketball and track. Glenn married his sweetheart, Arlene Coburn, at the bride’s home north of Quinter on Jan. 30, 1952, before shipping out to serve in Korea. They were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage and raised a son, Scott, and three daughters, Glenna Rae, Melony and Stacey.

He was proud to serve his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 as a chief mechanic of the headquarters Battery Motor Pool. He received numerous commendations and medals. Glenn and Arlene wrote love letters back and forth daily during his absence.

Glenn’s faith and acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Savior was the basis for his life. He worked hard and truly lived his faith in all he did. Glenn was very active in and supportive of the Quinter Methodist Church.

Glenn was a quiet man of few words but deep thoughts, great integrity, and absolute honesty. He was selfless in his support and generosity to others and well known as a wonderful neighbor and community leader.

As a farmer and cattleman, he was a great steward of both the land and animals. In addition to the livestock, the Bird farm was well known for its variety of animals, including Bambi (an orphan fawn rescued by Glenn), peacocks, chickens, ducks, geese, llamas, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats. He planted windbreaks and cover crops, winning an award for Kansas Wildlife Habitat. Over the years, he worked closely with his father John Bird, father-in-law Sam Coburn, brother-in-law Sammie Coburn, nephew Lance Coburn, as well as dear friends who were also neighbors. They shared a special bond of love for family and the land.

Glenn and Arlene enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and games, and socializing with friends. They were highly involved in and supportive of their children’s school events and interests, encouraging them to develop their talents. Family was very important to Glenn, and even talking about or praying for his family would often bring tears to his eyes.

Glenn was an avid fisherman and hunter with special memories of times with his brothers, Gary and Roye, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends, and other loved ones.

A relaxing hobby for Glenn was searching for fossils, rocks, and arrowheads in his beloved Horsethief Canyon. A prehistoric mosasaur and sea turtle were discovered there, excavated and donated to area museums.

Glenn, a successful farmer who loved to raise field crops of wheat and fall crops to provide for his family, relaxed by tending a vegetable and fruit garden. Glenn loved to share his bounty and deliver it to neighbors and friends.

In later years, Glenn enjoyed woodworking, refinishing and restoring furniture, rock polishing, and building birdhouses. He whistled as he worked, and in the last several months was known for his singing and happily dancing away.

Glenn spent his life loving and honoring his country and was a member of the American Legion. He wore his uniform proudly and participated in parades, Memorial Day ceremonies at the cemetery and funeral services.

Glenn will be so greatly missed by many. He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Glenna Rae (Norm) Alexander of Leesburg, Fla.; daughter Melony (Gary) McClure of Assaria; son Scott (Sheryl) Bird of Quinter; and daughter Stacey (Scott) Wood of Wichita. He also leaves 16 adored grandchildren and 26 precious great-grandchildren: Avery (Kim), Abigail, Asher, and Theodore Alexander of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Alden (Sarah), Isaac, Lillian, Benjamin, Jonah, and Hannah Alexander of Salina; Emily (Nathan), Caleb, Micah, and Levi Watson of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Kesa, Lois Kael, Toben, Eleanor, and Thatcher Easter of Andale; Kimber (Chris), Madeleine, and Miles Breeden of Wichita; Mark (Lili) McClure of Topeka; Max McClure of Poděbrady, Czech Republic; Marissa (Jacob) and Quentin Jones of Springfield, Mo.; Michaela Bird of Kansas City; Stephen Bird of Austin, Texas; Matthew Bird of Overland Park; Sarah Bird of Overland Park; Valerie (Luis), Isabella, Samuel, and Aurora Alicea of Benton; Angela (Jonathan), Jacey, Jordyn, and Morgan Lee of Wichita; Olivia (Erik) and Blakely Harbutz of Wichita; Aimee (Taylor) and Lawson Carter of Olathe; and honorary son Jorge Rodriguez, Monterrey, Mexico.

After many years of hard work and loving his family, Ralph Amerin went home on Aug. 24, 2023, in Johnson. He was born May 4, 1929, in Plains, the son of John and Anna (Schield) Amerin.

Ralph grew up in Plains and graduated from Plains High School. He met and later married Virginia Gertner on Nov. 28, 1950, in Sterling, Colo. 

They moved to Stanton County in 1954. Ralph was a farmer and father to two boys, Jim and Bill, and three girls, Kathy, Cheryl and Carol. He cherished the time spent with his family and many friends.

He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and the oldest active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ralph is survived by his children, Kathy Lippert and husband Brian of St. George, Kan., Jim Amerin and wife Lori, Cheryl Wilkerson and husband Tony, Carol Garrison, and Bill Amerin and wife Candee all of Johnson; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, E.G. Amerin of Plains; and two sisters, Marge Kramer of Ulysses and Angie Ebeling of Plainview, Texas.

Mary A. Montoya, age 87, of Johnson, Kan., died Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

She was born June 12, 1936, in Trinidad, Colo., the daughter of Pablo and Estefanie (Sanchez) Marquez. Mary grew up in Colorado and attended school in Trinidad. She was married to Eloy Sierra from 1959 until his death in 1963.

She met and married Joe Montoya in Colorado, and they were married in 1965. They lived in Colorado and California for a brief time, before settling in Johnson in 1968.

Mary was a homemaker and babysitter. She enjoyed embroidery and listening to music. Her family was very important to her, and she enjoyed attending their events and activities.

Mary was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Housholder of Liberal, Joe Sierra and wife Alma of Dalhart, Texas, Stephen Sierra and wife Amanda of Johnson, and Carlos Montoya of Mount Vernon, Wash.; honorary daughter, Carrie Tarin of Johnson; siblings, Josie Garcia of Pueblo, Colo., Frank Marquez of Boone, Colo., Johnny Marquez and wife Ortencia of Pueblo, Colo., Sylvia De Herrera of California, and Helen Martinez of Olney Springs, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Estefanie Marquez; husband, Eloy Sierra; husband, Joe Montoya; son, Pete Montoya; and grandson, Jose Sierra.

Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, and Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, both at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. 

Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. Elias M. Gonzalez, 71, passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at his home in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 5, 1952, in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango, Mexico, to Candelario and Concepcion (Martinez) Gonzalez. In 1970, he married Irene Tinoco in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango.&nbsp;

A resident of Great Bend for 33 years coming from Wichita, Elias worked as a manufacturer at McDonald Tank &amp; Equipment. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, attending services at St. Rose of Lima. Elias enjoyed going on walks, gardening, vintage cars and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Gonzalez, of the home; four sons, Armando (Irma) Gonzalez, Rigo (Laura) Gonzalez, Jorge (Rafaela) Gonzalez, Isaias (Daisy) Gonzalez, all of Great Bend; a daughter, Victoria (Vince) Enfield of Goddard; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, with a Vigil at 7 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Prakash Kola Presiding.

Veronica “Fronie” Helena Slothower passed away Aug. 24, 2023, at Parkview Care Center, Osborne.

Fronie was the 14th child born to Peter Anton and Barbara (Boden) Reinert, on Jan. 2, 1924, at their home 3 miles west and 3 miles south of Tipton.

Fronie attended schools in Tipton and one year in Osborne before returning to Tipton to graduate high school.

Fronie met and married Max E. Slothower on April 26, 1945, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. They were married 63 years before Max passed away in 2008. To this union, they were blessed with 11 children Carol, Gary, Marjorie, Mary, Ellen, Karen, Maxine, David, Julie, Bob and Larry.

Fronie was a stay-at-home mom not only to her kids but often to the neighborhood kids as well. When the last of her children entered high school, she took employment at Parkview Manor as a dietician for 15 years before her retirement. She loved to sew clothes for the family, from shirts and shorts to prom and a wedding dress. She also made quilts and loved to crochet in her spare time. She loved to garden flowers and raised a food garden for many years, canning and freezing for her family.

Fronie was an active member of the ladies' Altar society making Altar linens and other items that were needed. She helped fix and serve many meals for social gatherings and funerals in the parish. Fronie was also a member of the lady's VFW auxiliary in Osborne.

At our many family gatherings, Fronie would always bring out the cards for several hands of pitch. She enjoyed going to Solomon Valley Home for social gatherings, exercise and cards as well.

Preceding her in death were her husband Max; her parents; her brothers Frank, Leo, Bernard (Benny), Joe, Anton (Tony) Reinert; sisters Bertha Adam, Loretta Wagner, Agatha Corbett and spouse; two infant brothers and two infant sisters; two son-in-laws Charles Turner, JD Snedden and Myron Albrecht; and one grandson Christopher Jahnke.

Fronie leaves behind all her children; Carol Snedden and son Robyn McKown; Gary (Kathy) Slothower all of Salina; Marjorie (John Jr.) Campbell of Portis; Mary (Dan) Morrison of Chapman; Ellen (Leon) Degas and Karen Albrecht of Salina; Maxine (Jon) Koffman of Abilene; David Slothower of Osborne; Julie Slothower of Schertz, Texas; Bob (Mike) Slothower of Shawnee and Larry (Mona) Slothower of Abilene; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends.

Verlyn S. Farlee, 65, of Republic, passed away August 25.

Verlyn Scott Farlee was born November 10, 1957, in Concordia, Kansas, to Merlyn and Jean (Hallgren) Farlee and passed away on August 25, 2023, at the age of 65.&nbsp;

Verlyn grew up in Republic and attended Republic schools until 1973, when the district consolidated with Belleville. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1975, and went to Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina to play football. He graduated in 1980 with a degree in physical education with a minor in psychology. He was a team captain and played on the defensive line, a time he had fond memories of.&nbsp;

On April 12, 1980, he married Julie Walker, and they had two daughters, Sarah and Amy. They were the light of his life. They made their home in Belleville and then Republic.&nbsp;

Verlyn taught junior high physical education and health for 23 years and touched countless lives as a teacher, mentor, and coach. In 1992, he joined the Belleville Police Department as a part-time officer. After he left teaching, he pursued a lifelong dream of driving a truck. He worked for CA Picard in Belleville, driving a sales route through the Midwest until he decided to be closer to home for his family. He then went to work at Norder Ag Services in Byron and was currently working for Aurora Co-Op in Republic.&nbsp;

Although he held multiple jobs, he was a farmer his entire life. He started farming with his grandfather, then his father, and then with his daughters. Most summers, when the girls were in school, they could be found alongside Dad and Grandpa, learning life lessons and how to be people of good character with a work ethic that would forever make them the women they are today. When his girls left, Julie stepped in, and they were rarely apart.&nbsp;

He did things he enjoyed with people he enjoyed.&nbsp;

Verlyn lived for his family. He did whatever needed to be done to ensure they were cared for and taught them to care for others. He did what needed to be done. No questions asked. He was there for his family, neighbors, coworkers, and friends.&nbsp;

He was a noble of the Isis Shrine for 25 years, and a 25-year member of the Belleville Masonic Lodge No. 129 as a third-degree Mason.

Verlyn was also a member of the Republic Fire Department and served as the president, a role which he took great pride in serving as a mentor to the next generation of first responders.&nbsp;

Verlyn was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his wife, Julie, daughters Sarah Farlee of Lawrence, Kan., and Amy Farlee of Silver Lake, Kan., mother, Jean Farlee, and mother-in-law, Marge Walker. Sister Marilyn (Blake) Nichols, sisters-in-law Carolyn Cornett, Vicky (Lewis) Novak, brothers-in-law Scott Walker, Gary (Linda) Walker, and Curtis (Rhonda) Walker, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 30, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home.

Rosary/vigil services will be Wednesday, August 30, at 6:00 p.m., at St. Edward Catholic Church in Belleville. The family will greet friends following the Rosary services at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 31, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Edward Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery, rural Byron.

Larry Lee Doty, 81, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Medicalodge, Great Bend, Kansas.

Larry was born April 29, 1942, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 40+ years. He was the light plant supervisor for the city of La Crosse before his retirement.

Larry enjoyed electronics, he especially enjoyed repairing and tinkering with CB radios.

On September 11, 1971, he married Linda M. Bitter in Great Bend, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Mike Doty, and Carl Doty.

Vance Allen Poage “Grandpa," of Grainfield, peacefully passed away at his home on Aug. 25, 2023, at the age of 70. 

He was born to Philip and Claire (Cochran) Poage, on March 12, 1953, in Norton. He married Sharon (Tacha) Poage in 1976, and they had two children, Amy and Tony.

Vance was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed going to the NHRA Drag Races in Topeka, riding his Harley and taking trips to Montana. But his greatest joy was his grandkids and especially his great-grandkids.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a former member of Norton Archery Club and Prairie Powder Packers. After retiring from the City of Norton in 2011, he and Sharon moved to Grainfield to be closer to their kids and grandkids. He was currently working at Grainfield Supply.

Vance was everybody’s grandpa, and he was a well-loved man. He liked to give people a hard time and could make anybody smile.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of the home; daughter Amy (Poage) Anderson of Grinnell; son Tony Poage of Salina; grandchildren, Andrew (Ellie) Anderson of Grinnell, Alexis Huber of Hays, Riley (Amanda) Anderson of Oakley and Christapher, Dakota, Tommie and Phillip Poage, all of Grinnell; great-grandchildren, Carlos, Sawyer, and soon to be baby Anderson of Grinnell, Kinsley Huber of Hays and Peyton and Madeline Anderson of Oakley; sisters, Jackie (Poage) Hill of Aurora, Colo., Jeannie Poage and Jodi Poage, both of Norton; brothers Vale (Sandra) Poage of Horton, Von (Teresa) Poage of Norton, and many other close family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Philip and Claire (Cochran) Poage; grandparents, Vance and Elsie (McCrea) Cochran and Orville and Helen (Hager) Poage; parents-in-law, Claude and Barbara (Wetter) Tacha and brothers-in-law Pat Tacha and John Tacha.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall, Norton.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. A Rosary will take place prior to the Mass. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

JETMORE&nbsp; - Loren E. Ochs, 87, passed away August 25, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, ISB, Jetmore.

He was born December 13, 1935 in Dodge City, the son of Vernon and Nola E. Hill Ochs. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident he was a farmer/rancher.

He was of the Christian faith and attended Grace Community Church, Dodge City, served in the United States Army, served on the Victory Electric Board where he was president from 2000-2004 and the Sunflower Electric Board. &nbsp;He loved playing cards, and going out to eat with friends.

On August 6, 1961 he married Beverly Kay Fagen in Jetmore. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Brad, Jetmore; a daughter, Carol (Jeff) Jarnagin, Holcomb, daughter-in-law, Stephanie Ochs, Jetmore; seven grandchildren, Jarvis Jarnagin, Jenna (Troy) Krehbiel, Jesse Jarnagin, Janae (Ryan) Falconer, Garrett (Kelsey) Ochs, Taylor (Caleb) Sheets and Gentry Ochs; 11 great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Ochs, Jetmore, Karen Ochs, Wichita and Julie Ochs, Jetmore.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steve and three brothers, Charles, Marion and Alan Ochs.
