Former resident of Hays, KS, Kendra Grammon, 27, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 10, 2023, in Big Spring, TX. 

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 29, 2023 at the Rose Garden in Hays, Kansas.

Kendra LeAnn Grammon was born on January 12, 1996, in Colby, KS, the oldest child of Wayne and Valorie Grammon. She graduated from Circle High School in Circle, MT in 2014. 

She was a gifted individual with many musical talents and her smile could brighten any room. She was known for going above and beyond to help others and will be greatly missed. Kendra was a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community. She enjoyed collecting Funko POP dolls, watching Wichita Thunder and Wichita Thunder Jr. hockey, Denver Nuggets basketball, and spending time with family and friends.

Mourning her passing are her mother and father Wayne and Valorie Grammon, sister Janelle Grammon and brother Aaron Grammon, all of Hays, KS; grandparents Mike and Susan Elliott of Phillipsburg, KS, aunt and uncles Steven and Drema Shaw of Gladstone, MO, Amy and Christopher Rundell of Wichita, KS, Gregory Grammon of Russell, KS, Ward Grammon of Phillipsburg, KS and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother Shirley Shaw and grandfather Roger Grammon.

Stephen Craig “Steve” Ball, 70, passed away July 16, 2023, at his home in Bison, Kansas. He was born on October 6, 1952, in Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Coralee Ann (Lewis) Ball. 

On October 10, 1987, he married Linda Koci in Bison, Kansas. She survives.

Steve served his country in the United States Marine Corps and after being discharged, spent his working years as an onsite geologist in the oil field. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Walnut City Lodge of Rush Center. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, dog training and farming.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three brothers, Richard Ball of Junction City, Kansas, Michael (Coleen) Ball of Hillsboro, Kansas, and David Ball of Manhattan, Kansas; two sisters, Candace (John) Cobb of Lawrence, Kansas and Crystal (David) Miller of Winfield, Kansas; stepbrother, Iver Tokoi of Abilene, Kansas; and stepsister, Amanda (Tim) Hilfiger of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Patrick Ball; and sister-in-law, Patricia Ball.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 21, 20203, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps, as well as Masonic Funeral Rites presented.

Eula Marie Juenemann, daughter of Guy and Irma (Carswell) Geisenhener was born on June 8, 1927 on the family farm ten miles north of Rexford, Kansas in Decatur County. She passed away on July 15, 2023 at Prairie Senior Living in Colby, Kansas at the age of 96.

After graduating from Decatur County High School in May 1945, Eula started nurse's training in June 1945 at Halstead Hospital, Halstead, Kansas under the government’s Nurse Cadet Program. She graduated, passed her state boards and became a registered nurse in 1948. During her 41-year nursing career she worked as a staff nurse at hospitals in McCook, Nebraska, Hoxie, and Oberlin, Kansas; as Director of Nursing at Lantern Park Manor, Colby, Kansas; as a home health nurse at Decatur Community Health Department; and from 1976-1989 she served as the administrator of the Decatur County Health Department. In 1989 Eula was honored by the Kansas Health Care Association as Employee of the Year. She retired in 1989.

On February 19, 1948, Eula was united in marriage to Bernard (Ben) Juenemann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Selden, Kansas. She admitted to having a crush on “Bennie” in grade school and they began dating after he returned home from serving in the Navy during WWII. They lived on farms in Sheridan and Decatur Counties until moving to Oberlin in 1985.

In retirement Eula was very active with volunteering; church activities including traveling to Costa Rica for two weeks at a time for five consecutive years to help build a church; hobbies--- her favorite being quilting by hand; and traveling the United States and foreign countries. She often said she thought she might be part gypsy. She was a member of the Selden and Oberlin Sacred Heart Churches.

Eula was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Dora Ann, her parents, her husband, Ben, and two sisters, Glenda Blair and Cleta Riepl. 

She is survived by a daughter, Irma Mottley and husband Terry of Suffork, Virgina; two sons, Fred and wife Lesa of Brewster and David and wife Joyce of Selden; her sister, Marjorie Rorie and husband Wayne of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 10:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Family will receive guests from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Hawkeye Cemetery.

Galen E. “Igor” Schmidt, 76, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas. Galen was born July 11, 1947, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Cyril P. and Marie B. (Jira) Schmidt. 

He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. 

A 1965 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, Galen furthered his education graduating from Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, with a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts. 

He was a foreman at KBK Industries, Rush Center, Kansas, for 20 years before managing United Ag, Olmitz, Kansas. He was then employed with Sykes Enterprises, Hays, Kansas, and Manhattan, Kansas, before retiring. After retiring, he enjoyed spending countless hours on the farm.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

Galen loved farming, spending time with his family especially cherishing the time spent with his three grandsons. He was also known to swing a golf club, and enjoyed his time on the golf course.

On July 10, 1971, he married Donna Keener at First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Schmidt, La Crosse, Kansas; one son, Patrick Schmidt (Amy), Basehor, Kansas; one daughter, Megan Morse (Clay), Park City, Kansas; three grandchildren, Collin Schmidt, Jalen Morse, and Liam Schmidt; five brothers, Gary Schmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, Richard Schmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, Joe Schmidt, Wamego, Kansas,&nbsp;John Schmidt, Hoisington, Kansas, and Mark Schmidt, Solomon, Kansas; and one sister, Mary Beth Wagner, Rush Center, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Michael Schmidt; and two sisters, Judy Addams, and Debra Hollis.

Deryl Dean Marsell, 86, of Salina, Kan., passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023. He was born on June 25, 1937, in Green, Kan., to George and Edna (Lowry) Marsell.

Deryl graduated high school in Ada, Kan., and attended Fort Hays State University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1956. He was a career federal employee and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Springfield, Mo. 

In retirement, he volunteered at CoxHealth Medical Center for 22 years. 

He and his wife, Mary, loved to travel, seeing 48 of the 50 states. His idea of fun consisted of playing all types of games, working on crossword puzzles, playing golf, and dancing and singing with Mary. He was a BIG KU basketball fan and loved the St. Louis Cardinals too. His great sense of humor will be missed the most.

Survivors include his sons, Darren Marsell (Kris), of Lorraine, Kan., Doug Marsell (Karen), of Russell, Kan., and Kent Pack, of Kansas City, Kan.; daughters, Rhonda Carryer (Robert), of Ogden, Kan., and Kim Pack, of California; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary (Skala) Marsell; and sisters, Mildred Russell, Wanda Andrews, and her husband, John.

Barbara Brown, age 87, of Grinnell, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2023 in Wichita.

Barbara Anne (Neifert) Brown, 87, of Grinnell, Kansas passed away peacefully on July 9th, 2023 at the Brookdale East Senior Care in Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp;Barbara was born October 6th, 1935 to Herbert and Vera (Barnett) Neifert on the family farm west of Glen Elder, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Barbara attended Granite Creek Country School and graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1953. &nbsp;

On April 10, 1955, Barbara married William (Bill) Brown at the Christian Church in Glen Elder. &nbsp;Bill and Barb shared most of their 61 years of marriage together in Grinnell, Kansas.&nbsp; Together they had five sons, Bill, Dave, Dana, Bradley, and Jerry. Barbara adored all children, especially babies, and was the best mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and loving caregiver to all. &nbsp;

The Grinnell community was extremely important to her and felt like family.&nbsp; She enjoyed talking with her family and friends, keeping up with their growing families and sharing stories, and was known to spark up a conversation with just about anyone.&nbsp; 

Barbara’s hobbies included painting, sewing, embroidery, gardening, cooking, listening to music (especially piano) bird watching, and most importantly, playing bridge! &nbsp;She thoroughly enjoyed school and summer sporting events that her sons participated in.&nbsp; 

Bill and Barb were faithful members of the Grinnell United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She was also a member of Wheatland V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #2864, Grinnell, and the KSU Catbackers. Once Bill retired, the two actively became very loyal Kansas State University Wildcat Football fans, or “Catbackers.” &nbsp;Bill and Barb held season tickets and rarely missed a K-State football game in Manhattan. &nbsp;They also enjoyed traveling to bowl games including the Cotton Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.&nbsp; Their love for Memorial Stadium, Coach Bill Snyder, and “the boys” as Barb referred to them, were unwavering as Proud Wildcat Fans. Barbara adored all children, especially babies, and was the best mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and loving caregiver to all. &nbsp;The Grinnell community was extremely important to her and felt like family.&nbsp; She enjoyed talking with her family and friends, keeping up with their growing families and sharing stories, and was known to spark up a conversation with just about anyone.&nbsp; Barbara’s hobbies included painting, sewing, embroidery, gardening, cooking, listening to music (especially piano) bird watching, and most importantly, playing bridge! &nbsp;She thoroughly enjoyed school and summer sporting events that her sons participated in.&nbsp; Bill and Barb were faithful members of the Grinnell United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She was also a member of Wheatland V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #2864, Grinnell, and the KSU Catbackers. Once Bill retired, the two actively became very loyal Kansas State University Wildcat Football fans, or “Catbackers.” &nbsp;Bill and Barb held season tickets and rarely missed a K-State football game in Manhattan. &nbsp;They also enjoyed traveling to bowl games including the Cotton Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.&nbsp; Their love for Memorial Stadium, Coach Bill Snyder, and “the boys” as Barb referred to them, were unwavering as Proud Wildcat Fans. Patricia (Pat) Ann Davie (Bauman), October 20, 1946 - July 7, 2023, passed away at home after a long battle with health issues. Pat was born in Denver, Colorado, the only child of Robert (Bob) and Cleo Bauman (Whisler). 

Pat grew up in North Denver, attending Holy Family High School, graduating with a secretarial certificate. Pat went to work for a food distribution warehouse, NGC located in Denver working as a secretary alongside her mother. 

In the early 1970s Pat was introduced to Dwight Davie by a co-worker and in 1972 they were married. The co-worker became her sister-in-law, Cora (Corky) Davie. In 1974 Pat and Dwight had a daughter (Denise). Along with being a stay-at-home mom, Pat was the business manager for the family antique business of Hoss’s Antiques.&nbsp; In the early years of the business Pat and Dwight ran an auction house in Colorado where Pat would clerk and maintain office work, they then participated in an in-person co-op antique shop located in an old Colorado bread factory. Pat had many stories and experiences on the weekends at that shop, including meeting and doing business with celebrities. Many of the other dealers became like family. Eventually the antique business went to a booth only co-op antique mall where Pat prepared items to be sold in their booth. This left weekends open, and Pat and Dwight participated in local and out of area antique shows and Flea Markets. For many years Pat, Denise (daughter) and Cleo (Mother) took a girls' working weekend to Cheyenne, WY to do an antique show at the hotel Little America. The entire family did another show in downtown Denver for over 20 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; Pat had a myriad of interests and among them was traveling for fun and antiquing. Many "business" trips were taken including flights to flea markets where the luggage was packed, bulging and overweight with antique and junk goodies on the return trip home. When traveling on the road, several trailers were purchased along the way to bring back the found treasures.

On one of the just-for-fun trips, Pat and Denise took a trip to the eastern United States including a stay in the Lizzie Borden house. Pat tried to make the most of everything including her many doctor visits out of town, if able those visits became mini-shopping trips as well.&nbsp; In 1998 Pat and Dwight moved to Lebanon, KS; while “retired” they continued their antique business. Pat loved the ocean, having visited the coasts many times in life, she always joked about the fact she was retiring “in the middle” of the U.S in Kansas. Waconda Lake was a close second and a great fossil hunting location. Pat was a member and participated in several hobbies and clubs including rock and fossil hunting, collecting antiques for personal collection, bowling leagues, member of the beer items collectors club, and business women's club. Her hobby of eating Mexican food was a great joy both locally and traveling if there was a choice of a Mexican restaurant that was where we ate.&nbsp; In 2007 her grandson Cody was born, and she took on a new role she was fabulous at, grammy.&nbsp; Pat was preceded in death by her mother and father, mother-in-law, father-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Those that remain to cherish her memory husband, Dwight A. Davie, Daughter Denise, son-in-law Kevin Marcum and grandson Cody Marcum and many extended family members and friends. A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; Visitation will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel.&nbsp; Burial will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery, Athol, KS.

Carolyn LaFaughn Bolton, 93, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023, at Smith County Memorial Hospital after an accident at her home. Faun was born on April 13, 1930, the daughter of Lasher and Ethel (Russell) Kelley.&nbsp;

On February 24, 1951, she married James C. “Dede” Bolton in Smith Center, KS. To this union they were blessed with three children, James Lyle, Robert Fletcher, and Vicki Lynn. Faun was much loved by family and friends.&nbsp; She was an avid game player, bingo being one of her favorites along with pinochle, spinner, and various other games of chance.&nbsp; She loved bowling, golf, garage sales, and traveling.&nbsp;

Dede and Faun traveled to all 50 states with a trip to Bermuda thrown in.&nbsp; Las Vegas was always a favorite destination.&nbsp; 

Faun was always busy with some project, be it painting, crafting, cooking, being a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, friend or confident to everyone.&nbsp; A recent highlight was going to Pawnee City, Nebraska with nieces Nancy and Chris and nephew-in-law Ron to bury her sister’s ashes and visit her parent’s gravesite.&nbsp; 

She always wore a smile, always looking to cook a meal, make a bed for friends and family or help in any way she could.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, Lasher and Ethel Kelley, an infant brother Donald Kelley, three sisters, Ila “Pat” Gillian, Shirley Husson and Beverly Martin and her husband Dede Bolton. Faun is survived by her three children, James Lyle Bolton, Robert Fletcher (Lisa) Bolton all of Smith Center, Vicki Conaway of Wichita; seven grandchildren, Heather McKean and husband Kent, Ryan Bolton and wife Sam, Shelby Bolton, Trevor Etie and wife Abbey, Cole Conaway and significant other Maranda Benjamin, Chris Callihan, and Melannie Callihan and 11 great-grandchildren, Kobyn, Brekyn, Cadence, Savannah, A.J., Edisyn, Bankston, Gavin, Brandon, Ethan, and Olivia and lots of cousins too numerous to mention. A celebration of Faun’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2023, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen.&nbsp; Inurnment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS.&nbsp;

Thomas Ernest McCoy, 84, passed away on July 1, 2023, at the Cedar Village Long Term Care in Ness City, Kansas. Tom was born in Ness County on August 2, 1938, at the Ransom Hospital and was the son of Neal and Mary (McVicker) McCoy. He was proud to be the fourth generation of his family to live in Ness County.&nbsp;

Tom survived the same plane crash that killed his father in 1952. It was a pivotal moment in his life, and he described how he and his brother, Larry, with the help and support of their neighbors, had to take on much of the responsibility of the farm at an early age.

&nbsp;After graduating from Ness City High School in 1956, Tom enlisted in the Army and served two years, including being stationed in South Korea from 1957 to 1958. 

After he left the Army, he returned to the farm before attending one semester at Kansas State University in the fall of 1962 and attending Fort Hays State University in the spring and fall of 1963. 

Tom had again returned to the farm when he met Joy Carpenter, and they married on September 26, 1964, in Dodge City.&nbsp;

Tom and Joy’s daughter, Sandra, was born in 1966, and the family moved to Pueblo, Colorado, in the fall of that year so that Tom could return to school, although they returned to Ness City each summer so he could continue to farm with his brother. 

Tom earned an associate's degree in electronic technology from Southern Colorado State College (now Colorado State University at Pueblo) in 1968.&nbsp;

In the fall of 1968, Tom sold his share of the farm to his brother, Larry, and moved with his wife and daughter to Wichita, Kansas, where he worked as an electronic technician with Sears-Roebuck for 1 1/2 years and then as a salesman for a radio supply company. 

In 1971, Tom moved his family back to Ness City, and he began what became a very long career in the oilfield business. His first oilfield job in the area was pumping for the Pickrell Oilfield Company, and in 1976 he bought out the oilfield tank trucks from Hembree Oilfield Service and started CarMac with his brother-in-law, Ben Carpenter. Tom and Joy bought out Ben’s share in 1978 and continued the business until 1989. After selling their business, Tom returned to full-time pumping and continued working, at least part-time, as a pumper until he experienced a stroke in the fall of 2022.&nbsp;

Family and friends were very important to Tom, and he loved visiting and telling stories, especially about family and the history of the area. During any Ness County Old Settlers Reunion, he could probably be found sitting on a corner visiting with old friends or cousins. Tom (call sign WA0THN) also enjoyed visiting with others via ham radio and belonged to the local ham radio club.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by his wife, Joy McCoy, of Ness City; daughter, Sandi (Greg) Kramos of Manhattan; son, Brett (Vanessa) Ault-McCoy of Redmond, WA; grandson, Dathan Ault-McCoy of Redmond, WA; brother-in-law, Bob Schniepp, of Madison, WI; niece, Jill Schniepp (Holly) of Madison, WI; niece, Cindy (Garry) Huk, of Fort St. John, BC; sister-in-law, Anne (John) Weatherill, and nephews, Jeremy and Vincent, all of Chilliwack, BC; sister-in-law, Linda Wickman, and niece, Kim (Scott) Warner, all of Pueblo, CO; nephew B.J. (Tara) Carpenter, of Moody, AL; niece, Kim (David) Snider, of Clinton, OK; nephew, Kirk (Robin) Schwartzkopf, of Ness City; and numerous cousins.&nbsp;

Tom was born in Ness County on August 2, 1938, at the Ransom Hospital and was the son of Neal and Mary (McVicker) McCoy. He was proud to be the fourth generation of his family to live in Ness County.&nbsp;Tom survived the same plane crash that killed his father in 1952. It was a pivotal moment in his life, and he described how he and his brother, Larry, with the help and support of their neighbors, had to take on much of the responsibility of the farm at an early age.&nbsp;After graduating from Ness City High School in 1956, Tom enlisted in the Army and served two years, including being stationed in South Korea from 1957 to 1958. After he left the Army, he returned to the farm before attending one semester at Kansas State University in the fall of 1962 and attending Fort Hays State University in the spring and fall of 1963. Tom had again returned to the farm when he met Joy Carpenter, and they married on September 26, 1964, in Dodge City.&nbsp;Tom and Joy’s daughter, Sandra, was born in 1966, and the family moved to Pueblo, Colorado, in the fall of that year so that Tom could return to school, although they returned to Ness City each summer so he could continue to farm with his brother. Tom earned an associate's degree in electronic technology from Southern Colorado State College (now Colorado State University at Pueblo) in 1968.&nbsp;In the fall of 1968, Tom sold his share of the farm to his brother, Larry, and moved with his wife and daughter to Wichita, Kansas, where he worked as an electronic technician with Sears-Roebuck for 1 1/2 years and then as a salesman for a radio supply company. His son, Brett, was born in 1969.&nbsp;In 1971, Tom moved his family back to Ness City, and he began what became a very long career in the oilfield business. His first oilfield job in the area was pumping for the Pickrell Oilfield Company, and in 1976 he bought out the oilfield tank trucks from Hembree Oilfield Service and started CarMac with his brother-in-law, Ben Carpenter. Tom and Joy bought out Ben’s share in 1978 and continued the business until 1989. After selling their business, Tom returned to full-time pumping and continued working, at least part-time, as a pumper until he experienced a stroke in the fall of 2022.&nbsp;Family and friends were very important to Tom, and he loved visiting and telling stories, especially about family and the history of the area. During any Ness County Old Settlers Reunion, he could probably be found sitting on a corner visiting with old friends or cousins. Tom (call sign WA0THN) also enjoyed visiting with others via ham radio and belonged to the local ham radio club.&nbsp;Tom is survived by his wife, Joy McCoy, of Ness City; daughter, Sandi (Greg) Kramos of Manhattan; son, Brett (Vanessa) Ault-McCoy of Redmond, WA; grandson, Dathan Ault-McCoy of Redmond, WA; brother-in-law, Bob Schniepp, of Madison, WI; niece, Jill Schniepp (Holly) of Madison, WI; niece, Cindy (Garry) Huk, of Fort St. John, BC; sister-in-law, Anne (John) Weatherill, and nephews, Jeremy and Vincent, all of Chilliwack, BC; sister-in-law, Linda Wickman, and niece, Kim (Scott) Warner, all of Pueblo, CO; nephew B.J. Loren Andrew Biltoft, age 57, of Hoxie, Kansas, passed away, after a short battle with lung cancer, June 21, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center. He was born in Valentine, Nebraska, November 22, 1965 to Robert Wayne and Carolyn Beth (Keith) Biltoft. 

He grew up in Thedford, Nebraska and graduated from Thedford High School in 1984. 

After graduating from high school, he entered the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for four years. He received his basic training at the Carswell Air Force Base, Dallas-Fort Worth and was assigned to the Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Loren spent several years working as a ranch hand on a ranch near Elsmere, Nebraska.

In 2005, Loren moved to Hoxie, Kansas to work for his cousins, Sam and Bob Morgan. He also worked as a farm hand and truck driver for Les Sealock and more recently, Broc Kuntz. He loved to tinker with any vehicles and any project he came up with. Loren was very artistic and created some beautiful art projects. He was an excellent welder. He was a lover of fast cars and enjoyed working on them. He did like to go hunting and fishing when he could.

Loren recently married Kathleen (Francis) Biltoft. They had been together for six years and lived in Hoxie. Loren battled lung cancer and wanted more time on earth, but it was not to be. He leaves a hole in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by them.

Loren is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Hoxie, KS; daughters, Amber Biltoft of Valentine, NE; Brandy Biltoft of Litchfield, NE; and Logan Biltoft of Lincoln,NE; stepdaughters, Amber White of Goodland, KS and Kassie (Trent) Gray of Brewster, KS; brothers, Leigh Biltoft of Spokane, Washington and Lynn (Kaylen) Biltoft of Columbus, Nebraska; Aunt Kathryn (Dale) Brown of Gooding, ID; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Carolyn Biltoft.

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for July 15th, 10:30 a.m., at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the service 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Kathleen Margaret (Hamer) Weigel, 81, of Oakley, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023. She was born on January 28, 1942, to John and Catherine Hamer in Evanston, Illinois. 

She grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood in Chicago, attending St. Jerome Church and grade school before graduating from St. Scholastica High School. She was quite proud to share that she never missed a day of school, even though she did walk over a mile, often through snow, while wearing the required school uniform skirt. This foundation of fortitude and faith would serve her well through the rest of her life. When it came time for college, she chose Marymount in Salina, KS. It was going there that would eventually lead her to western Kansas and her cowboy. 

After teaching in Chicago, she returned to Kansas to teach at Sacred Heart Elementary in Salina. 

It was after taking a job at St. Joseph School in Oakley that she met Robert Weigel and they were married on July 26, 1969. A dedicated educator, she continued teaching until the last moment possible before welcoming her first child, Michelle. Four more children were added to the family, Julie, Robert, James and Michael. Kathy quit teaching for many years to dedicate her time to her husband and children, while staying actively involved in the school and church. Whether it was cleaning church, working at the school carnival, teaching English to visiting priests, preparing food for funerals, or being a room mom for parties and field trips, she could be counted on to lend a helping hand, typically with a dose of laughter.

Her home was invariably open to her children’s friends, extended family and friends, and neighbors. There was always a spot at the counter for coffee or an extra plate. If you happened to be there for a holiday, you were welcomed in to celebrate and Christmas cookies were decorated or an Easter basket was filled. You were also likely to hear a song or two or join in wearing a silly hat created just for that occasion. If you happened to stop by in the summer, you never left without a cucumber or tomato from the garden. 

Family stories were often shared about her childhood, including trips to Bailey’s Harbor and ice skating on Lake Michigan. Hearing about the courtship of Bob and Kathy never grew old to their children, and the lifetime of memories they created together are especially treasured now. Her love of learning and life touched the hundreds of students that entered her classroom. Kathy was intuitive and ahead of her time in her relentless pursuit of supporting the students in her classroom. She spent countless hours researching and preparing materials and lessons to actively engage her students and help them be successful. Acting out stories like Stone Soup and Mrs. Wishy Washy, building a milk jug igloo, singing throughout the day, and enjoying learning were facets of her classroom.

Kathy enjoyed a special connection with the teachers at St. Joseph School, who were truly an extension of her family. She continued to teach until retiring in 2009, but never really left St. Joseph School as she continued teaching pre-school part time and subbing for several years. In her last days, Kathy expressed her gratitude for a life well lived, and shared words of wisdom and love with her family and close friends. She repeatedly told us to spread love to others. We hope we can honor her by living our lives as faithfully as she did. She is survived by her husband, Bob of Oakley; her children, Michelle Hellmuth (Chris), Salina, Julie Brown (Lance Bedore), Hays, Jim Weigel (Katherine Swartz), Benkelman NE, and Michael Weigel, of Oakley; grandchildren, Xavier Salas, Brianna Cozzitorto, Cedric and Zachary Salas, Danielle Smith, Kylie and Kaitlyn Brown, Maci, Shelbi and Kelsi Weigel, and Berkley, Bridge and Brighton Weigel; seven great-grandchildren; her brother Mike (Cheryl) and sisters Mary Hamer Burnett (Lowell) and Karen Feldt Dawson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and her extended family. Special additions to her family are her former daughter-in-law, Julie Weigel, and extra granddaughters, Michaela Kaus and Breanna McEwen. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Kate Hamer and Martha Hamer; brothers, Jackie Hamer, Tom Hamer and Bill Feldt and her infant son, Robert. She was looking forward to seeing them again! Visitation has been scheduled for Sunday, July 16 from 5-7 p.m. with the vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held on Monday, July 17 at 10 a.m. All services will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley KS. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with a meal and fellowship will follow at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center.

Patricia Nadyne (O’Toole) Douglas passed away in her home of natural causes on July 13, 2023 at the age of 82. She was born June 4, 1941 in the Norton County Hospital to Paul and Erma O’Toole. 

She graduated from the Norton Schools in 1960 and was wed at the Norton Christian Church to Lonnie Raymond Douglas on her birthday in 1961. They attended Manhattan Christian College and enjoyed ministry, living in several locations. They were blessed with three children: Patrick (Julie) Douglas of Norton, Kevin Douglas of Paola, KS and Christen Skrdlant of Norton and was further blessed with nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Patricia enjoyed studying the bible, sewing, flowers, and visits from family, friends, and grandpups. She always looked forward to visits from church elders and deacons, especially the ornery ones.

Patricia was survived by her brother, Paul Gene O’Toole of Wisconsin, her children, grandchildren, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the Norton Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. The visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m .Monday, July 17 at the funeral home.

Henry E. Schindler, age 76, passed away July 10, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kan. Henry was born April 16, 1947, in Hays, Kan., to Ray and Vera (Arrington) Schindler. 

Henry grew up on the family farm in Greenfield Township in Rooks County, Kan., where he learned the value of hard work. 

He attended the Elm Creek Country School and Stockton High School. 

Henry married Bernadine Schultz; to this union were born two sons, Don and Rick. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Henry was a welder for GBI and a heavy equipment operator for George Baize. After retirement, he worked for The Center for Counseling and Consultation in Great Bend in maintenance for six years. Henry was a member of Kansas Cosmetology Association and was a barber for many years as well. 

Henry enjoyed gardening, lawn work, growing flowers, fruit trees, fishing, and watching Wheel of Fortune. Henry was very talented in fixing about anything.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son Don (Lisa) Schindler of Newton, Kan.; three grandsons, Gage and Gavin Reich of Oceanside, Calif., and Carson Schindler of Newton, Kan.; four brothers, Kermit of Stockton, Kan., Marvin of Goddard, Kan., Louis of Hill City, Kan., and Kenneth of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters, Zoe Hrabe and Marilyn (Dwight) Miller of Stockton, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Vera Schindler; his son, Rick Schindler on June 21, 2018; his significant other of 43 years, Judy Schindler; three brothers, Richard, Charles and Abe; two sisters, Rita Hrabe and Avis Look; three brothers-in-law, Gene Hrabe, Norman Hrabe, and Lester Look; and four sisters-in-law, Julie, Sandy, Shirley and Barbara.&nbsp;

A private family graveside is planned at the Stockton Cemetery.

Estella Louise Harold of Norton passed away July 11, 2023 at the age of 91. She was born August 28, 1931 in Oberlin, KS to Raymond Lawrence and Katheryn Amelia (Coley) Carper.

Estella grew up in Oberlin and was a 1950 graduate of Decatur Community High School. She went on to attend Colby Community College and then received her master’s in education at Fort Hays State University. 

Estella married Marlin B. Harold on October 27, 1949. 

After graduation she began her teaching career in Jennings, then she taught in Marquette before transferring back to Jennings where she continued to teach until retirement. Her teaching career didn’t end there as she was a substitute teacher in Jennings for over 15 years. When she wasn’t teaching, she helped Marlin as a custom cutter, driving trucks for harvest from Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraska. 

Estella enjoyed reading, working on the computer, cooking, knitting, and sewing (she made her daughters' and daughter-in-law’s wedding dresses). She also loved shopping; if she liked an item, she would buy every variation of the product available, and she loved her dogs, especially Gabe. Estella took up making ceramic items; she even had her own kiln.&nbsp;

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Phillipsburg Ward, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Estella is survived by her children Sandy Fox of Belfair, WA, Don (Pat) Harold of Grand Junction, CO, and Patty (Perry) Brooks of Kismet, KS; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with one on the way, and many extended family members and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marlin; brother, JD Carper; two infant brothers, and sister, Doreen Tweedy.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Dresden Cemetery. A visitation will be from 3-5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at the funeral home.

Evelyn Wilson, 87, passed away July 12, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on March 15, 1936, at Versailles, Mo., to John J. “Jack” and Dessie (Hess) Andrew. 

She married Robert Wilson on August 9, 1953, at St. John. He died February 25, 2019.&nbsp;

A longtime area resident, Evelyn was a dietary specialist at CKMC for many years until her retirement in 2000. 

She enjoyed traveling and riding motorcycles, painting t-shirts, sewing, reading, garage sales and working on crossword puzzles.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Wildeman and husband Paul of Hays, and Sandra Stevens of Winfield; a brother, Bill Andrew of Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren, Bob Roller (Joanna), Twila Lasiter and Elizabeth Keller (Earl Lynam); and nine great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; a son-in-law, Tommy Stevens; and many siblings.&nbsp;

William “Bill” Jefferson Keener, 94, passed away July 11, 2023, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland in Westmoreland, Kan. He was born on March 17, 1929, at Hoisington, to Fred and Frances “Fanny” (Schreiber) Keener. 

He married Joan Elliott on May 27, 1951, at Great Bend. She died December 5, 2001.&nbsp;

A former Great Bend resident, Bill was the math and science teacher at Mullinville High School. 

He was a member of King United Methodist Church in Great Bend and the Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include a son, Adam Keener and wife Kay Hawes of Prairie Village; two daughters, Debbie Winn and wife Kelly Hanshew of Drexel Hill, Penn. and Peggie Post and husband Dennis of Manhattan; a sister, Betty Misegadis of Rush Center; two sisters-in-law, Jan Elliott of Great Bend, and Jinny Schneider of Rush Center; five grandchildren, Ben Hanshew, Jill Breuer (Mark), Jenna Nightingale (Cy), Rory Keener and Reagan Keener; and four great grandchildren, Lilly, Luke and Lauren Breuer, and Braden Meyer. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan Keener; two brothers, George Keener and his wife Evelyn, and Pete Keener; his sister and her husband, Lois and Ed Hickel; and two brothers-in-law, Bob Elliott and Dean Misegadis.&nbsp;

 </figure>Terry Lee Acheson, 70 years of age, of Salina, entered in to God's Heavenly Kingdom on Monday, July 10, 2023 at his home in Salina, Ks.Terry was born April 24th, 1953 in Russell, Kansas to Alvin Sr. and Norma (Kuntzch) Acheson.Terry was a 1972 graduate of Russell High School. He married Peggy Pfannenstiel on October 13, 1978 at Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend, Ks.Terry and Peggy were blessed with three children, Heather, Michael, and Saprina.He worked for Shields Oil Producers in Russell for 20+ years.&nbsp; He moved to Salina in 1998 where he went to work for Salina Waste Systems until he retired in 2021. In retirement he started a nuisance trapping and pest removal business which he enjoyed immensely.He was an avid outdoorsmen; he had a love for Lake Wilson where for over 50 years he would hunt, fish and trap. Terry mentored many young people to become good stewards of the land and to hunt responsibly.Some of his favorite times where hunting and fishing with his brothers, children, grandchildren and wife. Frequent camping trips included water gun fights with the grandkids, harvesting deer for the freezer, making new friends and enjoying nature. Watching his children and grandchildren compete in sporting events was very important to him. Most will remember him in the stands cheering or down with the kids coaching, he never missed a game.Known as PaPa in the later years of his life, Terry loved being with his family, watching the Chiefs, KU, cooking chicken fried steak, sitting on the patio watching the birds, and tending to his yard, flowers, and garden.Not only was family important, but be he had a love for life and all people, he enjoyed having coffee with his friends in the early mornings and will be missed by many.Terry is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Heather Acheson of Great Bend, KS, son Michael (Julie) Acheson of Lebannon, IL, daugher Saprina (Leroy) Burks of Smolan, Ks, brother Danny (Peggy) Acheson of Salina, Ks, brother Donny Acheson of Russell, KS, five grandchildren, Brianna Acheson of Lebannon, IL, Jon Burks of Salina, KS, McKenzie Burks of Smolan, KS, Kaitlyn Acheson of Lebannon, IL and Danny Burks of Smolan, KS, as well as seven nephews, four nieces and a host of cousins.Terry was proceeded in death by his parents Alvin Sr. and Norma (Kuntzsch) Acheson, brother Robin Acheson, brother Alvin Acheson Jr.Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday,&nbsp;July 18, 2023 at First Southern Baptist Church, 2401 S.
