Joel Alexis Hernandez, 19, passed away on July 4, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born in Great Bend, to Alberto Hernandez and Veronica Leyva.

Having lived in Great Bend and later Wichita, Joel spent his time watching TV, playing music and video games, and spending time with family.

Survivors include his mother of the home; his father; two brothers, Alberto (significant other, Aylin) Hernandez of Great Bend and Alan Hernandez of Wichita; aunts, Esna (Victor) Banuelos of Odessa, Texas and Anna Maria Leyva of Mexico; uncles, Oscar (Diana) Leyva and Jesus (Maribel) Leyva, all of Great Bend; and numerous cousins. He is preceded in death by a sister, Arely Hernandez; and maternal grandparents, Oscar and Anna Maria Leyva.

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Omero Cadenas presiding.

Walter Raymond Biggs, 84, of McDonald, Kan., died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby. He was born on the family farm in Rawlins County, to Milton and Eva (Eicher) Biggs on March 22, 1939.

Walter served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1961. Upon his return from the service, he lived in Colby. Walter was united in marriage to Bonnie Christiansen on Feb. 23, 1962. They moved to Colorado, then Sharon Springs, Kan., before moving to the farm near McDonald in July of 1962 and eventually building a new house in 1979.

Walter spent his years farming and ranching in Rawlins County. He was a big supporter of 4-H and enjoyed helping the children and attending the county fairs. He donated all the lemonade for the 4-H snack stand at the Thomas County Fair for many years.

Walter loved working on his antique tractors. He would take them to Colby for the fair parade each year and also entered them in tractor shows. He also enjoyed watching and collecting John Wayne movies. Walter is survived by his wife Bonnie and son Monty. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and five sisters. A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Beulah Cemetery, Colby. Deloris Jean Ziegler Wasinger, 86 of Garden Grove, Calif., passed away on Feb. 8, 2023, at home.

Deloris was born to Henry and Edith (Hetzel) Ziegler in Trego County on Nov. 15, 1935. At the age of 3 the family moved from Collyer to Grainfield.&nbsp; Deloris attended Grainfield Grade School and graduated for Grainfield High School in 1954. &nbsp;She then attended St. Anthony’s School of nursing in&nbsp; Hays, where she received her R.N. degree. Deloris practiced nursing for 47 years and retired in 2004.

On Oct. 12, 1957, Deloris married Harry Wasinger at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. They shared 57 years of marriage; they lived in Hays and Manhattan, Kan., until 1960 when they moved to California. Harry passed away on Dec. 8, 2014. They were blessed with three daughters; Brenda, Cindy and Pam. &nbsp;

Deloris’ hobbies included painting pictures, working outside in her yard, taking care of her many orchid plants and attending her grandchildren's events. &nbsp;

Deloris is survived by her three daughters: Brenda and Ken Hammerton of Germantown, Tenn., Cindy and Gary Peck of Seal Beach, Calif., and Pam and Tracy Taylor of Orange, Calif. Eight grandchildren: Jessica (David) Sawyers, Andrea (Jim) Rusiewski, Jackie (Nacho) Balbontin, David (Samantha) Hammerton, Lindsay (Adam) Gage, Melissa (Eric) Dow, Allison (Ryan) Carroll, Justin (Dana) Taylor and eleven great-grandchildren. Sisters: Norma (Alex) Zerr of Grainfield, and Louise (Harvey) Wildeman of Quinter.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, parents Henry and Edith Ziegler, two brothers Douglas and Delbert Ziegler and sister-in-law Olinda Ziegler

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. The burial of both Deloris and Harry’s ashes at Grainfield Cemetery will be immediately following the service.

Christine Carol Kohart Michael passed peacefully Saturday, July 1, 2023, with her daughter Tami and her son Brad by her side. She lived a long, full life of caring, nurturing and loving the people around her with her vibrant energy.

She was born May 14, 1936, in Penokee, to Everett and Nellie Kohart. She married William Douglas Michael on Aug. 3, 1958, and they were married almost 40 years at the time of his passing in 1997. Together they lived in several states, including Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio, and in 1982 they settled in Edmond, Okla.

Chris never knew a stranger and befriended everyone she met. She was an amazing caregiver to her children, grandchildren, and many, many others – being the mom or grandma to anyone who needed extra love. She made her house a warm, loving home where everyone felt welcome and cared for. She made holidays so special that no detail was missed, and created unique and special memories for everyone who entered her life and became “family.”

She was also adventurous – always happy to try new things, whether it be recipes, home décor, clubs, or travel excursions. She was kind, giving, and generous to everyone and with life in general, always making each day special in some way.

Chris is survived by her two children, Tami Steinberger of Cleveland, Ohio, and Brad Michael and wife Vilona of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenny Kohart of Carson City, Nev.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Bill; her son Gary Michael (Paula); four brothers and one sister.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy Ave., Hill City, KS 67642.

Betty Jo (Taylor) Sells passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, in the Lyons Regional Hospital in Lyons at age 94. She was born on Oct. 1, 1928, to George V. and Ora Grace (Engelbert) Taylor in Chase, Kan.

Betty worked for Farmland Industry at the Lyons Cooperative starting as a bookkeeper and finally becoming the manager. She was very proud to be the first women manager for Farmland Industry. After retiring, Denver and Betty enjoyed camping and fishing at Wilson Lake. They also enjoyed taking care of their honeybee hive and selling Watkins products. She was an avid gambler and was always at a casino whenever she could be.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver C. Sells; and daughter, Sylvia Ann Whitis.

She is survived by her sons, Dennis R. Sells (Maryann) of Moore, Okla., and E. David Sells (Becky) of Wilson; sister Maxine Sappenfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

A graveside celebration of Betty’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8 at the Lyons City Cemetery in Lyons.&nbsp;

Janet Sue Dombroski, of Plainville, died on July 3, 2023, at Rooks County Health Center, in Plainville, at the age of 83. She was born on April 3, 1940, to Henry Charles and Lois Rowena (Doty) Cooley in Ottawa. She married Robert Charles Dombroski on Dec. 20, 1958, in Plainville. He passed away on May 31, 2012.

Janet moved to Oklahoma at age 3 and then to Rooks County at age 6. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1958. She and Robert lived in Anchorage, Alaska, while Robert was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. She was a cook for the Plainville school district for 15 years, and then a paraprofessional for a few years working with special-needs children. She also worked at a local drive-in theater and the Moore Indoor Theatre for 20 years and was a telephone operator for a year while working the night shift. She also earned her associate degree from Colby Community College while taking night courses later in life.

Janet was a Girl Scout leader for many years, and she enjoyed scout camping. She also enjoyed music, playing the piano, sewing, word puzzles, drawing (she had an artistic flare), traveling all over the country, garage sales and Thursday night shopping in Hays was a must.

Janet is survived by her children, Darlene (Steve) Norall of Southlake, Texas, Bob (Connie) Dombroski of Hill City, and Dianne (David) VanPatten of Christiana, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Karen Sanderson; and brother-in-law, Bill Sanderson and son, Rick Dombroski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 7 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 6 with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church.

SHAWNEE – Nelda Rae Pakkebier, 80, passed away June 30, 2023, in Shawnee.

She was born May 9, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Malvin and Harriet Grandy Ford.

A lifetime resident of Pawnee and Rush counties. She was a teacher and then later a mail carrier, and she also helped her husband farm near Sanford. She was a member of the Rozel Methodist church and served on church committees at Rozel and La Crosse Methodist Churches; a member of EHU Extension Unit, Rozel, Colorful Calico’s, La Crosse, and was active in 4-H as a project leader. She enjoyed woodworking, painting, stained glass and stitchery.

On Aug. 6, 1966, she married Marvin Edward Pakkebier at Rozel. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 2017.

Survivors include: two daughters, Pam (Ty) Welsh of Shawnee and Lea Pakkebier; seven grandchildren, Tyson, Trenton, Carly, Tanner, Ben, Rylie, Allie (Anthony); two brothers; four sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

JETMORE — Drew Edward Craghead, 17, passed away July 1, 2023, in Larned.

He was born July 24, 2005, in Reno, Nevada; the son of Kent and Erika Sweany Craghead. A lifetime area resident, he was a 2023 graduate from Hodgeman County High School and worked at Arensman Services in Kinsley.&nbsp;

He was of the Christian faith; was a member of the Community Life Group, Jetmore, &nbsp;Hodgeman County 4-H, FFA, Hodgeman County Trap Shooters and various Facebook truck groups.

Survivors include; his parents, Kent and Erika Craghead, Jetmore; two brothers, Tyler Craghead and Jacob Craghead, both of the home, Jetmore; maternal grandmother, Alice Sweany, Jetmore and paternal grandfather, Darrel (Pauline) Craghead, Jetmore.

He was preceded in death by; maternal grandfather, Jim Sweany and paternal grandmother, Lola Craghead.

Sgt. Gregory V. Knoll 22 died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1944, during battle in World War II outside the town of Kommerscheidt, Germany, in The Hurtgen Forest offensive defending the line so other infantry soldiers could pull back.

Sgt. Gregory Knoll was born July 7, 1922, in St. Peter, Kan. He was the son of Adam and Eva Knoll of Garden City. Sgt. Knoll had 12 brothers and sisters. He worked on the family farms until he was drafted to join the U. S. Army in 1942. On leave, he married the love of his life Rose (Brungardt) Knoll on July 10, 1943. Sgt. Knoll was killed in action and was listed as missing in action until recently his remains were identified through DNA and was sent home to his family for a funeral and final burial. Sgt. Knoll and Rose had no children. He has only one surviving family member. His sister Agnella Horning of Garden City. Sgt. Knoll is preceded in death by his parents Adam and Eva Knoll, six brothers Edwin, Edward, Clarence, Eugene, Aruellius, Marcellyn Knoll and five sisters Josephine Meier, Genevieve Meier, Adeline Burgardt, Cyrilla L’Ecuyer and Glorianne Bascue. GARDEN CITY—Anna May (Sonnenberg) Velev, 84, died on Friday, June 30, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City. She was born on Aug. 30, 1938, in Wilsey, the daughter of Clifford C. and May (Vorse) Husband.

She married Eugene Sonnenberg on May 26, 1957. He died on Aug. 6, 1982. She later married Dr. Velitchko “Doc” Velev on March 13, 1983, in Garden City. He died on Feb. 14, 1995. Anna May loved motorcycling and owned her own Harley Davidson Sportster, which she rode alongside her husband, and her children frequently rode along! She was affectionately known by her Girl Scouts as “Harley Mom."

Anna May and her husband Velitchko embraced a love of travel. She visited all 50 United States and many foreign countries, including a 12-country European tour, many Mediterranean countries, Bulgaria, Sweden, Guam and others. Anna May has been employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator, Pulliam Upholstery as a seamstress, YMCA as a receptionist, USD 457 school bus driver, and the city of Garden City administration receptionist. Anna May’s many attributes were her kindness and generosity. She did not know a stranger and helped those in need. She blessed many lives through her time and thoughtfulness: A lifetime member and deaconess of the Church of The Brethren where she also served many funeral dinners.

She was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of America where she was active for over 25 years with her daughters. A member of all her children's PTA, Eagles Lodge, supervising judge of elections and over 10 years as a National Red Cross disaster response volunteer where she was on location for Hurricanes Katrina and Charley and others, tornado events including Greensburg and Lincoln, Neb., forest fires in California, and gave over 100 pints of blood. She also was active with the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, RSVP at the Finney County Senior Center, Friends of Finney County Game Refuge and was a Master Gardner. Physically active her whole life she never sat still, a runner in her younger days, and an avid walker in mid and later life. Her quilts and delicate handwork are a treasure to many and to all of her children and grands, and greats are wrapped in her love and hand-crocheted blankets at birth and at marriage. But most of all she felt her greatest achievement was her family: She is survived by her son- Clifford and Cheryl Sonnenberg of Fritch, Texas, two daughters- Rhonda and Bill Stubbs of Lawrence, Elena and Clay Billings of Garden City, brother- Robert and Brenda Husband of Garden City, grandchildren- Steven and Amber Sonnenberg of Garden City, Scott and Mekayla Sonnenberg of Garden City, Michael and Stephanie Stubbs of Kansas City, Mo., Timothy and Selene Stubbs of Royce City, Texas, David Stubbs of Lawrence, and Sofie Billings of Garden City. Kevin G. Schiltz of Oakley died Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. Born May 31, 1955, he was adopted by John “Jack” and Norlene (Baalman) Schiltz. He was the oldest of four children. Kevin grew up in rural Sheridan County, attending school at Seguin and Menlo, graduating from Hoxie High School in 1973. His work-life consisted of driving a semi and helping on the family farm. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, tending to his yard, and taking a drive in his Polaris Ranger. Kevin never met a stranger. In 1979, Kevin married Barbara Hansen. He gained two step-daughters, Mindy Baalman and Lori Baalman. Together, Kevin and Barbara had one daughter, Linsey. Barbara sadly passed away in an automobile accident in 1984. Linsey also tragically passed away in an automobile accident in 1996. Kevin married Tina Maier in 1985. They have three girls, Jackylee, Katelyn and Merit; and three grandchildren, Caydence, Canon, and a granddaughter due in November. Kevin is survived by his siblings: Kelly (Bonnie) Schiltz - Menlo; Kendra (Joe) Hartman - Denver; Kristen (Steve) Ostmeyer - Colby; step-daughters: Mindy (James) Bieker and Lori (Jeff) Beaman; his three daughters: Jackylee Schiltz and Merit Schiltz - both of Oakley; and Katelyn (Michael) Halbleib - Colby; his grandkids and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Kevin is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara, his daughter Linsey, and wife Kathy Bergin. RUSSELL—Hilda (Bender) Dietz, 96, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 30, 2023, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Hilda was born at the family home on Sept. 20, 1926, in Russell County.&nbsp; She was the daughter of David and Mary (Dietz) Bender. She grew up in the Bender Hill area and attended country schools until high school.&nbsp; She graduated from Russell High School in 1944. She then attended two years at Fort Hays State University before teaching all grades in a country school for three years.

Hilda was united in marriage to Paul George Dietz on June 22, 1947, at the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church. They made their home for a year in Russell before moving out to the family farm.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children: Ronnie, Danny, Barb and Randy. After retirement, Paul and Hilda moved back to Russell in 2001. Paul preceded her death on April 21, 2015.

Hilda assisted Paul at the meat processing plant that they owned with bookkeeping and wrapping meats. She was also very instrumental in the operations of the family farm. She was a member of the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church before joining St. John Lutheran Church when they moved back to Russell. She was a Sunday school superintendent, a 4-H Leader, a member of the Ladies Aid Sorority before it was known as ALCW, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and sang in the church choir for over 53 years. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bowling, embroidery, crocket and quilting, and spending time with family and friends.

Hilda’s surviving family includes two grandchildren; Shaye Harris and husband Matt and Brett Dietz and wife Callen; sister, Linda Coe; great-grandchildren, Kaden Harris, Kamry Harris and Sutton Dietz.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul; sons, Ronnie Dietz, Danny Dietz and Randy Dietz; and daughter, Barb Dietz.

OSBORNE – Virginia Louise Gantz age 78, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, in Salina. She was born the daughter of Walter and Virginia (Schwendener) Cormack on Nov. 20, 1944, in Abilene.

She was a graduate of Osborne High School and was a retired secretary for the United Methodist Church in Osborne.

Dona Lee White, 71, of Colby, died Wednesday, June 28, 2023. She was born Aug. 13, 1951, in Goodland, to Richard and Ila Ardelene (Mucklow) Stegman.

She married John White on June 23, 1984, in Colby. Together they raised six children. Dona ran a day care for over 40 years before retiring in 2017 after having three major surgeries that prevented her from doing what she loved. She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening, baking, making porcelain dolls and going for walks with her dogs. Dona loved going to her grandchildren’s activities and spending time with her family, especially at Christmas, her favorite holiday. Roger Carl Lindberg was born to Clifford Lindberg and Clara Lauritzen on January 27th, 1948, in Concordia, Kansas. 

He attended grade school and high school in Courtland and graduated in 1966.

He was united in marriage to Janis Buster in 1967, and to this union three children were born, Sarah, of Sacramento, CA; Carla (Jeffrey), of Folsom, CA; and Paul (Michelle), of Courtland, KS. He has eight cherished grandchildren, Jaelin, Jaselle, Rocco, Eleanor, Spencer, Alivia, Bennett, and Holden.

He originally went to barber school in Wichita, KS shortly after marrying Janis, but changed careers to work as a trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol from 1970 to 1998, stationed in Holton, KS and Mankato, KS, as well as farming. 

He had many hobbies, including pheasant hunting, motorcycling, basketball, restoring antique gas pumps, cars, tractors, furniture, pool tables, and was always available to give haircuts to friends and family. Probably his favorite activity was socializing with his many friends. Roger passed away on June 29, 2023, at the age of 75.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Clara Lindberg, and brother-in-law Larry Trussell.

He will be greatly missed and is survived by his wife Janis, his children Sarah, Carla, and Paul, grandchildren, brother Curtis Lindberg and wife Julie, sister Sharon Trussell, several nieces, nephews, and a long list of friends

A public graveside memorial will be held on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, rural Courtland. Following the graveside services, the public is invited to the Courtland Arts Center, 421 Main Street, Courtland, for a luncheon and fellowship with the family.

He was a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1980 moving from Oakley, Kansas. He was a truck driver for most of his life, and he was a Marine Lance Corporal

On October 3, 1960, he married Rose I. Yehle at the United Methodist Church in Oakley, Kansas. She passed away on November 4, 2022, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include one brother,- Richard Huff of Laguna Hills, California, and one brother-in-law,&nbsp; Merle Dean Yehle of North Attleborough, Massachusetts.&nbsp;

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother Donald.

Frances was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Atwood, where she was a life-long member. She was also a life-long resident of Rawlins County, KS, except for a period during World War II, where she worked at Gate’s Rubber Company, in Denver, CO. On May 22, 1946, Frances was united in marriage to Albert Louis Kompus, Sr, at Sacred Heart Church, Atwood. They spent their lives farming in Rawlins County. To this union, two children were born, a daughter, Frances “Fran”, and a son, Albert, Jr.

Her husband Albert preceded her in death on October 10, 1982. Over the years, Frances worked at the high school cafeteria, café, Crest Motel and in the laundry department at the Good Samaritan.

In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and bingo. Dave worked for Saline County Road and Bridge for 41 years, retiring as Director in 2015, and was an active member of the KS Society of Land Surveyors. 

He loved God, family, and county, and was a proud supporter of the military and police.

Survivors include his mother, Lillian, of Salina; daughters, Chrissy, of Salina, and Kelle (Rick), of Casper, Wyo.; grandchildren, Jace, Torah, and Tyler Hull; siblings, Thomas Nowak (Mary), Kay Schmitt (Leonard), Vernetta Hammersmith, John Nowak, and Marilyn Labinski; in-laws, Rod Woods (Sue) and Terri Melby (Steve); and 16 nieces and nephews.

Max worked most of his adult life with his father at Ellis Auto Repair. He also worked at Brassfield Farm doing ranch work.&nbsp; 

He enjoyed four-wheeling, hunting, target practice, lake time boating and jet skiing, but mostly cooking and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his mother, Patrica, Ellis, Kansas; wife, Amber and their two daughters, Kaelyn Zahn and Madison Zahn, Ellis, Kansas; one brother Eric Zahn, Garden City, Kansas; sister, Katie (Dylan) &nbsp;Hawkins, McCracken, Kansas; grandfather, Raymond Zahn, WaKeeney; father-in-law, Dwain Ellis, Pennsylvania; mother-in-law, Lori Stimson, Ellis; four brothers-in-law, Jason Ellis, California; Corey (Andrea) Ellis, California; Geddy (Trish) Summey, Great Bend; Rusty (Ashley) Ellis, Ellis; nephews, Joey Miller, Connor Ellis, Edmond Summey, Easton Summey and Gage Robins; nieces, Nancy Hawkins, Autumn, Aspen and Ashland Ellis, and Elizabeth Summey.

He was preceded by his father Tim; grandparents, Preston and Geri Anderson; grandmother, Lucy Zahn and a cousin, Josh Brassfield.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Ellis Baptist Church, 107 W. 9th street in Ellis.

Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Mitchel Dean Barker, age 67, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. He was born to Rex and Janice McLeish Barker on August 1, 1955, in Scott City, Kansas. 

He was a lifelong member of the community.

Mitch was known as a man with many talents. He could fix about anything and enjoyed canning, gardening, entertaining people, hunting, and fishing. He was a hard worker and a good friend to all.

Survivors include his sisters Monica and Kevin Cambell of Lakin, Kansas, Rebecca and Jeff Berning of Garden City, Kansas, and his brothers Todd and Janet Barker, and Rod and Lora Barker of Tipton, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held on July 5, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wichita County Community Building, 502 M Street, Leoti, Kansas with Terry Laws residing. Interment will follow at the Leoti Cemetery.&nbsp;

Visitation will be on July 3 from 12:00 until 8:00 p.m. and July 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Karen S. Brown, age 80, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2023 in Long Beach, CA.

Karen was born on August 14, 1942 in Great Bend, KS, the first born child of Vernon and Delma Stenzel of Ness City, KS. &nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Steve Brown (Susan) of New York, NY, and Stephanie Kenny (Scott) of Brentwood, CA, and her four grandsons (Matthew and Owen Brown and Danny and Michael Kenny). &nbsp;She is also survived by her siblings, Bonnie Legg (Joseph) of Niantic, CT; Rick Stenzel (Deb) of Ness City, KS; and Patti Pfannenstiel (Tim) of Salina, KS, and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;In addition to the foregoing, Karen is survived by a sisterhood of lifelong friends which were her extended family.

Karen’s early childhood was spent in the family’s rented farmhouse near Bazine until the new family home was built in Ness City in 1950. &nbsp;

While at Ness City High School, Karen cultivated her love of music -- playing baritone saxophone in concert and jazz band and singing in choral groups; she was blessed with a beautiful alto voice. &nbsp;Karen left Ness City to pursue her interests in music and education at Kansas University; she graduated with a BS degree in education in 1964. &nbsp;She was active in the regional California leadership of the Girl Scouts of America in the 1970s-1980s. &nbsp;In the 1980s she entered the insurance industry, rising through the ranks to management in training and human resources, ultimately retiring from State Farm Insurance in 2007.

The loves of Karen’s life were her children and her grandsons. &nbsp;She cherished time spent with them, visiting whenever possible, playing games with her grandchildren and catching up on her children’s lives in daily (yes, daily) telephone calls. &nbsp;The Stenzel family reunion every 4th of July weekend was a highlight; Karen so enjoyed the convergence of her family from all parts of the country to Ness City and watching her grandsons play in her childhood yard in Ness. &nbsp;Americana at its best was celebrated with family gathered after dinner in a semicircle of lawn chairs in the breeze of a Kansas summer evening while fireworks rang overhead late into the night.

Karen Brown loved spending meaningful time with friends. &nbsp;She organized annual camping trips with family and friends, which eventually ended with her singing around a campfire, accompanying the group with her guitar. &nbsp;She had a passion for theater, particularly musicals, and attended performances on Broadway or touring companies in Los Angeles. &nbsp;She also loved attending concerts in the park, playing bridge and travelling.

Although Karen left KU in 1964, KU never left Karen. &nbsp;She was a huge Jayhawk fan, with men’s basketball a particular passion. &nbsp;In fact, the night before she passed she watched her beloved Jayhawks beat Texas Tech in a close game (67-63).

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Karen’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ness City Bank Building Foundation.
