Stanley Robert Roy, 76, WaKeeney, Kansas passed away May 11, 2023 at Trego Lemke Memorial Long Term Care, WaKeeney. Stanley was born February 19, 1947, in Damar, Kansas, the tenth child of Nathlie (Asselin) and Dona A. Roy.

Stanley spent his school years in Damar and graduated from high school in 1966. 

Before Stanley started technical college for mechanics and welding in Goodland, he met Diana Bassett. Stan and Diana married August 12, 1967 in Damar. To this union four children were born: Laura, Brad, Nicole and Mark.

After completing his training in Goodland, Stan moved his family to Tribune, Kansas where he worked as a welder, until he moved the family closer to home to help on the family farm. Stan and Diana raised their children on a farm near Damar. He worked many years for KDOT out of Hill City and later retired from Rooks County.

Stan was known by many as a gentle giant with a big smile who never knew a stranger. Stan and Diana loved spending their summers camping at Webster Lake, visiting with friends and family.

Preceding Stan in death are his parents; an infant sister, and his sister Donna; brothers Orville, Eugene, Albert, Clifford, and Lavern; and a son-in-law, Leonard Marcotte. 

He is survived by his wife Diana; sisters Viola Ricks, and Norma Griffin and husband Darrel all of Salina; children Laura Marcotte and special friend, Cody Frye of Hill City, Brad Roy of Hill City, Nicole and husband Gary Kroeger of WaKeeney, and Mark Roy and wife Amber of Palmer, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo (Taylor) Sells passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, in the Lyons Regional Hospital in Lyons, Kansas at the age 94. She was born on October 1, 1928, to George V. and Ora Grace (Engelbert) Taylor in Chase, Kansas.

Betty worked for Farmland Industry at the Lyons Cooperative starting as a bookkeeper and finally becoming the manager. She was very proud to be the first woman manager for Farmland Industry. 

After retiring, Denver and Betty enjoyed camping and fishing at Wilson Lake. They also enjoyed taking care of their honeybee hive and selling Watkins products. She was an avid gambler and was always at a casino whenever she could be.

She was preceded in death by her husband Denver C. Sells; and daughter Sylvia Ann Whitis.

She is survived by her sons Dennis R. Sells (Maryann) of Moore, Oklahoma and E. David Sells (Becky) of Wilson; sister Maxine Sappenfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Steven Dale “Steve” Schindler, 66, of Topeka, KS passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at his home in Topeka. He was born on November 7, 1956, in El Paso, TX, the son of Abe “Junior” and Shirley (Trible) Schindler.

Steve graduated from Stockton High School in 1974. He then attended Beloit Business School. He had resided in Topeka since 2007 and was employed by Acosta Sales and Marketing. 

He married Joyce D. Murphy on March 21, 2012, in Las Vegas, NV.

Steve is survived by his wife Joyce of the home in Topeka; son Shawn Schindler of Hays; daughter Machelle Schindler of Hays; stepdaughter Terri Murphy of Topeka; stepson Travis Marts of Junction City, KS; grandchildren; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Delores “Dori” Wageman; and grandparents Ray and Vera Schindler and James and Jessie Trible.

Services are pending at a later date in Stockton.

Freda Marie Leiker Wiesner was born on May 13, 1929 in Ellis County, Kansas; and grew up in&nbsp;Munjor, Kansas. She peacefully went to heaven on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at age 94.

Freda joined her husband of 61 years, Roman Wiesner, in marriage on April 23, 1952 in Munjor.&nbsp;Together they raised eight children and farmed wheat and cattle northwest of Ellis, Kansas. She was a&nbsp;member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church&nbsp;and the Daughters of Isabella.

Freda holds two world records. The first is the world’s best cook. She set international standards&nbsp;for chicken&nbsp;fried steak, galushkies, apple pies, noodles, and many Volga&nbsp;German dishes. The second&nbsp;record she holds is for the world’s biggest heart. She gave so much of&nbsp;herself and&nbsp;asked so little in&nbsp;return.

Freda is&nbsp;remembered&nbsp;by her children Ted (Colleen), Lubbock, TX; Mona Pratt (Gary), Stillwater, OK;&nbsp;Pat, Overland Park, KS; Mike, Ellis, Kansas; Larry (Lynn), St. Louis, MO; Don (Lori), Wichita, KS; and Elise&nbsp;Carter&nbsp;(Randy), Norman, OK.

Joining us in&nbsp;remembering her are&nbsp;six&nbsp;of her brothers and sisters;&nbsp;Sr. Mary Elise Leiker, Firma Dechant (Ralph), Clifford Leiker (Vera), Tony&nbsp;Leiker (Janet), Carol Wadley&nbsp;(Duane), and Linda Braun (Donny). Also Mom’s fault are nine grandchildren,&nbsp;and eight great-grandchildren.

In heaven, Freda has joined her husband Roman, who passed on July 24, 2013, her daughter, Jane,&nbsp;who passed on January 28, 1977; and her son-in-law Gary (Mona), who passed on June 26, 2015. Also&nbsp;meeting Mom in heaven are her sisters Alma Sanders (Ralph) and Juliana Urbanek (Keith), as well as&nbsp;her brother Maurice Leiker (Lillian).

Visitation will be held&nbsp;Monday, June 12, 2023&nbsp;from 5-7 p.m. at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th,&nbsp;in Ellis.&nbsp;The parish vigil service, starting with the rosary,&nbsp;will begin at 7:00 p.m..

Funeral services will&nbsp;begin 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday,&nbsp;June 13&nbsp;at St Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis.&nbsp;Burial will&nbsp;follow in&nbsp;the&nbsp;church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial&nbsp;contributions are suggested to St. Mary's&nbsp;Catholic Church&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Daughters of Isabella.

Freda Marie Wiesner

Roy F. Thornburg, 86, of Utica, KS passed away June 7, 2023, at his farm north of Utica. &nbsp;Roy was born April 7, 1937, in the old rock house at the family farm north of Utica. &nbsp;He was the son of Francis and Bertha (Daniels) Thornburg. &nbsp;Except for the five years he was off at college, Roy lived on the family homestead all his life. &nbsp;

Roy attended Smoky Vale School, was a 1955 graduate of Utica High School, and a 1960 graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) majoring in agriculture. &nbsp;During college Roy worked at the college farm and delivered fresh milk to the FHSU residence halls in the early morning hours after milking cows. &nbsp;

On June 7th, 1959, Roy married Ailene O’Toole at the Arnold United Methodist Church, making their home on the family homestead in rural Ness County. &nbsp;From this union, three sons were born, Lance, Marlon, and Rodd. &nbsp;Following Ailene’s passing in 1994, Roy married Roxie (McNinch) Fore at the Arnold United Methodist Church on October 26, 2002.

In 1960 Roy started a dirt construction business, Thornburg Construction, building terraces, pits, dams, waterways, and lease roads in addition to operating his dozer in the oil field. &nbsp;He continued to operate the business for more than 60 years in Ness, Gove, Lane and Trego counties.

Roy is survived by his wife, Roxie (McNinch) Thornburg, of the home, his sons Lance (Susan), Great Bend, Marlon (Darla), Coffeyville, and Rodd (Tara), Quinter; grandchildren Payden (Kaitlyn), MacKenzie, Tieraney, Tate, Taya (Broc), and Jesse (Casey); great-grandson Branch; brother Wallie (Coralee); and sister-in-law Janice O’Toole, Utica; nieces Darla (Roger) Windholz, Shelly (Bill) Popplereiter; nephews Allen (Julia), and Darcy (Michelle). &nbsp;He is also survived by Roxie’s children Rachelle, Randall, and Ryan (Crystal); grandchildren Aric, Audrey, Jace, Brittany, Hannah, Ethan, and Jillian; and two great-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ailene; brother-in-law Patrick O’Toole; Roxie’s son Russell Fore, and daughter-in-law Debbie Fore. &nbsp;

Funeral service will be held at the Arnold United Methodist Church in Arnold, KS on Monday, June 12th, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow in the Utica Cemetery, Utica, KS. &nbsp;Viewing will be Sunday, June 11th from noon to 8:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, KS. &nbsp;

Thornburg, 86, of Utica, KS passed away June 7, 2023, at his farm north of Utica. &nbsp;Roy was born April 7, 1937, in the old rock house at the family farm north of Utica. &nbsp;He was the son of Francis and Bertha (Daniels) Thornburg. &nbsp;Except for the five years he was off at college, Roy lived on the family homestead all his life. &nbsp;Roy attended Smoky Vale School, was a 1955 graduate of Utica High School, and a 1960 graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) majoring in agriculture. &nbsp;During college Roy worked at the college farm and delivered fresh milk to the FHSU residence halls in the early morning hours after milking cows. &nbsp;On June 7th, 1959, Roy married Ailene O’Toole at the Arnold United Methodist Church, making their home on the family homestead in rural Ness County. &nbsp;From this union, three sons were born, Lance, Marlon, and Rodd. &nbsp;Following Ailene’s passing in 1994, Roy married Roxie (McNinch) Fore at the Arnold United Methodist Church on October 26, 2002.In 1960 Roy started a dirt construction business, Thornburg Construction, building terraces, pits, dams, waterways, and lease roads in addition to operating his dozer in the oil field. &nbsp;He continued to operate the business for more than 60 years in Ness, Gove, Lane and Trego counties.Roy is survived by his wife, Roxie (McNinch) Thornburg, of the home, his sons Lance (Susan), Great Bend, Marlon (Darla), Coffeyville, and Rodd (Tara), Quinter; grandchildren Payden (Kaitlyn), MacKenzie, Tieraney, Tate, Taya (Broc), and Jesse (Casey); great-grandson Branch; brother Wallie (Coralee); and sister-in-law Janice O’Toole, Utica; nieces Darla (Roger) Windholz, Shelly (Bill) Popplereiter; nephews Allen (Julia), and Darcy (Michelle). &nbsp;He is also survived by Roxie’s children Rachelle, Randall, and Ryan (Crystal); grandchildren Aric, Audrey, Jace, Brittany, Hannah, Ethan, and Jillian; and two great-grandchildren.Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ailene; brother-in-law Patrick O’Toole; Roxie’s son Russell Fore, and daughter-in-law Debbie Fore. &nbsp;Funeral service will be held at the Arnold United Methodist Church in Arnold, KS on Monday, June 12th, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow in the Utica Cemetery, Utica, KS. &nbsp;Viewing will be Sunday, June 11th from noon to 8:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, KS. &nbsp;Memorials are suggested for the Arnold Methodist Church in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home.To plant Memorial Trees in memory of&nbsp;Roy Francis Thornburg, please&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fitzgeraldfuneral.com/obituary/roy-thornburg/gifts?campaign=obituaryThemed-gifts-textLink-obitText">click here to visit our Sympathy Store</a>.

Izabella Phoenix Eckhardt, 19, of Holstein, Nebraska, passed away June 8th.

I, Izabella Phoenix Eckhardt, graced the world with my essence on January 16th, 2004. My first name, Izabella, means God's promise, and my middle name, Phoenix, is a mythical creature that I considered to be my warrior spirit animal. In the hardest moments of my life, I would rise up from the ashes of my challenging circumstances by focusing on faith, hope, and better things to come. Now is no different, after an epic 19ish years, on June 8, 2023, I rose up and danced into the arms of my Savior after ferociously fighting my battle with Pineoblastoma Brain Cancer.

During my life on Earth, I was blessed to serve many roles in the individuals' lives that I loved: I was a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a niece, an aunt, a cousin, a friend, a "mother" figure (on occasion to those who may not have always appreciated my advice), an old soul, a bright light, a warrior, and a believer.

So how do I describe myself or my life in mere words? Well, my life was way more than the hospital I was born in, the school I graduated from, or where I spent my final day. It was also not defined by the numerous experiences that I will miss, such as my wedding, the births of my children, or the careers that I would have dedicated my talents to. Yes, I wanted all of those things, but what I hope I did do with my 19 beautiful years was make an impact. I embraced every relationship with those God placed in my life and did my best to show his love and light to the world through me.

I loved to dance, sing, draw, paint, act, play board games, and make people laugh. I loved the beach, my whales, and all the marine life I had the pleasure of getting to know. But the most important part of who I was directly relates to all of the amazing people I have met along the way, for each of you changed me for the better.&nbsp; When I loved you, I loved deeply and I hope that all of those that have met me know what a gift they have been to me.

I considered myself to be funny and often handled the tough situations life threw at me with humor. I learned that laughter makes life a better place and even death is still better than a rectal balloon.

I also strived to be a warrior. For me, a warrior is a person who fights for what is right, someone who doesn’t stop working towards their goals, someone who is brave, determined, and loyal.

I was not born a warrior; my character was developed as I faced adversities. The more trials I faced, the more honed my skills became. The times in my life where there were no other paths to choose from and my only option was to forge forward and fight the battle head on, I remained grateful, as each of those moments brought me closer to God.

I was an advocate, an advocate for finding more funding, better treatments, and cures for each pediatric cancer, but more importantly an advocate for the children that have and have had to endure this horrendous disease. My wish was to open a safe haven for the cancer kids' siblings to be supported, cared for, and loved, while being able to be present with their families during their siblings' treatment. I believed that providing counseling, schooling, support groups, and activities during and after their siblings' journeys was missing during my treatment and still affects my family to this day. No siblings should ever be left behind. I never got that chance, but hope that this will come to fruition one day soon.

My siblings say I was caring and nice, humorous, passionate, fiery, bright, fearless, fierce, and kind of a pain in their butt. They also said I brought happiness, growth, strength, and perspective to their lives, but they all brought so much more to mine. I want nothing more than for them to be okay and live long, happy majestic lives until we meet again. Our family is fun, even though it can be a roller coaster, but the best part is we won't give up on each other when times get tough. So take care of each other and live your lives in a way we can be together again…I love you all so much!

I will be waiting in heaven for my mother and father, Miki and Craig Eckhardt; my siblings, TJ, Thomas, Jasmine, Sarah, Azryn, Elexzia, Jaxon, and Lily; my grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and many family and friends. I was greeted in Heaven by all those I loved that passed on before me and some of the strongest fighters I know.

A candlelight vigil will be held at Lake Hastings Park in Hastings, Nebraska, on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 7:48 p.m. to honor Izabella's life.

Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Courtland, Kansas. The family will be greeting guests beginning at 1 p.m., prior to Izabella's funeral service which will begin at 2 p.m.. A graveside service at the Courtland Cemetery and reception will immediately follow.

Doris Jean Miller passed away on June 7, 2023, under hospice care, and tended by her children and extended family, at SunPorch of Smith County in Smith Center, Kansas. Jean was born on November 26, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa to C.J. and Elizabeth (Rietz) Hamer.

Jean attended schools in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating highschool, Jean received a teaching contract at Bennett, Iowa on her sister Ruth's reputation. She taught second grade in Bennett, Iowa. Jean then attended two years at McPherson, KS, meeting a handsome young man from Burr Oak, KS. She was united in marriage to Lyle Miller on June 11, 1950, in Waterloo, at the Church of the Brethren. Doris Jean taught two years at Kensington, KS before starting their family. Jean and Lyle served at many churches, the first being Kensington and Beulah. They also served at Pleasant View/Hunter, Scandia/Courtland/Norway, Tisdale/Burden, Stockton/Woodston, Rose Valley, and finally Cedar Christian Church. Jean served God for 70 plus years, living a life worthy of the “call.”

Jean joins her parents C.J. and Elizabeth Hamer; husband Lyle; son Mark; brothers Merwin and Robert Hamer; sister Ruth Riedesel; and great-granddaughter.

Survivors include children David and Crystal of Winfield, KS, Beth (Duncan) and Altan Hazen of Stockton, KS, Kathy (Elam Miller) Burns of Burden, KS, James and Melanie Miller of Newkirk, OK: grandchildren Shelby Miller, Shawn Miller Stover, Addie Duncan Jurgens, Gabe (Emily) Duncan, Jessica (Miller) and Shane Sloan, Jacob Miller, Becka (Miller) and Adam Tebben and John and Josie Miller; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10AM at the funeral home in Stockton. There will be no public visitation.

Janice Marie Mix, 72, passed away June 5, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born on June 9, 1950, Charles “Gene” and Margaret (Gliessner) Mix.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend resident, Janice was a parts manager in the oilfield. 

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend and the Altar Society.&nbsp;

Survivors include four brothers, Larry Mix and wife Carolyn of St. John, Gary Mix and wife Susan of Sterling Colo., Ronald Mix and Robert Mix both of Great Bend; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Beverly Mix; and a nephew, Tim Mix.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend.

She attended Gove Grade School. She graduated from Gove High School in 1952 with high honors and as the class valedictorian. She then attended the Parks School of Business in Denver, CO. 

On October 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to Pius Zerr in Grainfield, KS. To this union were born two children, Pam and Janice. Pius proceeded her in death on September 12, 1983. On September 19, 1986, she married Carl A. Moore of Goodland, KS.

Marcella worked as deputy Register of Deeds in the early 1950s and was later employed by Beougher’s Law office in Grinnell, KS until 1961. &nbsp;From 1961 to 1975 she worked for Charles Stewart, attorney. In 1975, she took the Kansas Abstractor’s exam and went into her own business for many years. &nbsp;She was very active in the Grainfield community as she served on the meal site council, recreation committee, city council, Christian Mothers, St. Agnes Parish Council and as a member of the Grinnell VFW Auxiliary.&nbsp;

She also helped numerous times serving funeral dinners and made many salads and desserts for grieving family members. &nbsp;She was always happy when she could help someone else out and give her time and kindness to others. &nbsp;

When Marcella wasn’t serving on a committee, you could either find her watching a KU basketball game or being one of the grandkids' biggest fans as they participated in basketball, cross country, volleyball, concerts, or any 4-H activity. You could say that anywhere her grandchildren were, you would see Marcella supporting them.

She leaves behind her husband, Carl Moore of Grainfield, daughters Pam Morel (Larry), Oakley, KS, and Janice Braun (Rick), Victoria, KS; six grandchildren, Lindy Morel, Landon Morel, Logan Morel, Lori Martin, Jenna Dempewolf (Andrew) and Lane Braun (Arrica). Her blessings grew as she had three great-grandchildren, Bellami Martin, Gentry and Braxton Dempewolf and baby Braun girl to be born in July! &nbsp;She has one brother, Pat Weigel, Hays, KS, along with his daughters Patty Goolsby and Staci Lucero. It was always a joy for Marcella to hear how Patty and Staci would call to ask if they could come “home” to stay with her as they were a very important part of her family.

The family has chosen cremation with a private service to be held at a later date. Family will welcome visitors on Friday, June 23 from 6-8 p.m. at S. Agnes Parish Hall, Grainfield, KS.&nbsp;

James B. Kirby, 85, of Larned, Kansas passed away May 31, 2023 at Stormont Vail Trauma Center in Topeka, Kansas with injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born in Larned, Kansas on August 31, 1937 to Frank and Nellie Kirby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dean Kirby, sister-in-law Glenda Kirby, wife Judith Kirby.

He married Judith Rice in 1960, having four children, Jeanice Corbitt (Eric), Eudora, Kansas, Jackie Hardesty (Randy), Kinsley, Kansas, Jill Young (Chris), Wichita, Kansas, and Jamie Kirby (Caci), Larned, Kansas.

Later he married Margery Salmans McCubbin in 1994. Children: Sharla Clark (Kent) Hutchinson, Kansas, Keith McCubbin (Denise), Hutchinson, Kansas.

He had twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Jim was a farmer and rancher for over seventy years, loving the land. Retiring from farming and moving to town in 2019, he worked for Hi Pro Inc. for four years delivering mail. He served six years in the Army National Guard and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW, American Legion, and Pawnee County 4-H, all of Larned.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Micheale Yvonne (Johnson) Dewey, surrounded by her loved ones, passed on June 3rd, 2023, at Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, KS. Micheale was born on January 3, 1961, in San Jose, California to James and Ruby Johnson. 

Micheale lived most of her childhood with her parents, loving the seaside life. She told stories of playing near the ocean and skateboarding around town. Her dad unfortunately passed at an early age; Micheale was only twelve. When she was fourteen, she moved to Mankato, KS to live with family where she attended high school at Mankato Jr./Sr. High. While attending she held multiple school records for track and field running events. She held those in her name until the events were transferred over from yards to meters.

She was united to Robert Walker in 1977 until 1988. They had their son John Walker, in 1979. She became a mom and received her GED all in the same year. Micheale enjoyed every minute of being a mom. She and her son Johnnie, as she called him, had a very special relationship, he being her only child.

Micheale and Robert lived in Nevada and Texas before settling back in Mankato in the 1980s. Micheale was a business owner of The R Bar M and later The Video Store, which she sold to local grocery store, Kier’s of Mankato.

She married new husband Troy Dewey on October 6th, 1988. Micheale and Troy enjoyed many times together with family and friends. Together they enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping, classic cars and listening to music outside on cool evenings. Many summers were spent at Lovewell Lake with their close friends.

In 1989, she started as a temporary employee, working in Jewell County at the Farm Service Agency office, entering the COT Program in 1995 to become CED of Sheridan County in February of 1997. She retired from this role at an early age in January of 2021.

Micheale’s life was full of love and laughter, spending time with family, special holidays with her sisters-in-law, son John, and family. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her two grandchildren, Owen and Olivia. Her hobbies included movies, shopping, gardening, and animals of any kind. Micheale especially treasured her toy poodles Pepe, Fifi, and Coco.

Left to cherish Micheale’s life is husband Troy Dewey; son John Walker (Hoxie) and wife Kristal (Kindler); grandchildren Owen and Olivia; mother-in-law Linda Dewey and significant other Rich Reinert (Downs, KS); sisters-in-law Tracy (Dewey) Walker (Mankato, KS) and Toni Dewey-Lippold, husband Jeremy, children Drew and Jordan (Overland Park, KS); nephews Steven Walker, wife Jennifer, sons Jace, West and Rustin (Mankato, KS) and Dakota Walker, wife Emma and children Ruby and Van (Mankato, KS); as well as many other family members and friends.

Micheale was preceded in death by father and mother James and Ruby Johnson, stepfather John Shaughnessy; and her beloved pups Pepe and Fifi.

Micheale showed incredible courage and strength through her life on earth, inspiring the ones around her to always take pride in who you are and what you have accomplished. She will be dearly missed by many!

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Friday, June 9, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at the Christ Community Church in Hoxie, Kansas. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. A private family inurnment will take place at a later time.

Kenneth “Ken” Ray Schumacher, 88, passed away June 7, 2023, at Sunrise Retirement Home, Sioux City, Iowa. He was born on November 10, 1934, in Drayton, North Dakota, to Gordon and Barb (Helm) Schumacher. &nbsp;

He married Barbara (Petersilie) Tomlinson on December 5, 1981, in Great Bend. She passed February 27, 2014. He then married Marilyn (Shaffer) Beach on September 16, 2017 in Ankeny, Iowa. She survives.&nbsp;

A resident of Ankeny, Iowa since 2017, Ken formerly lived in Great Bend and was the owner and operator of Kansas Door from 1988 until his retirement in 1998. He was also the Windsor Door salesman and director of the Mohawk Division at Fuller Brush. Ken was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, AMBUCS, Elks Lodge and Kiwanis. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and held his pilot’s license.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons, Miles Schumacher of Raleigh, North Carolina and Rick Tomlinson and wife Debbie of Great Bend; two daughters, Teresa Wondra and husband Kevin of Great Bend and LeAnn Gill and husband David of Sioux City, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett Schumacher; a half-brother, Duane Merritt; and a half-sister, Mavis Cronk.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 11, 2023, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 12, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas, with Pastor James A. Strasen presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Ron J. Diehl, 74, Hays, died Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born February 15, 1949 in Hays, the son of Rudolph “Rudy” and Anna (Haas) Diehl.&nbsp; 

Ron graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1967, served in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from Fort Hays State University, earning&nbsp; bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication and a second master’s degree in counseling.&nbsp;

 On May 8, 1982, he was united in marriage to Karen Beilman in Hays, and they celebrated 41 years of marriage.&nbsp;

 Ron worked in radio broadcasting, retail management, was a custodian, held supervisory positions, and was a business owner with his wife Karen.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and loved his Shih Tzu dogs, Kailey and Bailey.

Survivors include his wife Karen of the home, two sisters, Eileen Bieker of Haysville and Diana Zimmerman of Great Bend, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Willis and Dan Diehl.

Lawrence MacKenzie "Mac" Reed, 80, Hays, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at his home.

A lifelong Ellis Countian, he was born June 6, 1942, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, to Arthur Lawrence and Anne Elizabeth (Nicholson) Reed.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Ellis High School in 1960 and Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1964, earning a bachelor of arts in business.&nbsp; He went on to earn a master of arts degree in librarianship at the University of Denver in 1965.&nbsp; During his undergraduate years, he was a member of the FHSU Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Impromptus musical group, and served as editor for the Reveille yearbook.&nbsp; In later years, he was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi educational honorary.

His professional university career included 41 years of service at Fort Hays State University’s Forsyth Library, where he worked for ten years as a reference librarian and the remaining 31 years as a government documents librarian.&nbsp; He retired in 2007, and the Government Documents Department was named after him.&nbsp; During his career, he was a member and chairman of the Government Documents Roundtable of Kansas, an active member of the Kansas Library Association, and contributed as a member of the FHSU Alumni Association and FHSU Half Century Club.&nbsp; Active in this community, he was a member of the Hays Arts Council, Ellis County Historical Society, and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Upon retirement, he volunteered to create the natural history library collection at the Sternberg Museum.&nbsp; He then worked part-time as a 10-year employee of the city of Hays, functioning as a Welcome Center representative for the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In his spare time, he enjoyed attending Broadway musicals, completing yard work, reading good books, and completing crossword puzzles.&nbsp; He was also a world traveler, visiting 49 states and 45 countries.&nbsp; As an organ and piano enthusiast, he furnished music for FHSU events for over 50 years, supplied music for the Hadley Regional Medical Center chapel for more than 25 years, and provided music for numerous local funerals and weddings.

Survivors include two nephews, Roy Reed Hinkel and wife Teresa of Round Rock, TX and Lawrence Cooper Hinkel and wife Angela of Milton, GA, a niece, Anne E. Shannon and husband Jay of Corinth, TX, and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ann Elizabeth Hinkel.

A celebration of life will be at 10:00 am on Friday, July 7, 2023 at the former First Congregational Church at 8th and Washington in Ellis.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.&nbsp; Services are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; 

Memorials are suggested to Ellis Nutrition Center.&nbsp;

Verlyn Lee St.Clair passed peacefully in his home at the age of 90 on June 2, 2023 surrounded by his devoted family just as he wished. Verlyn was born July 3, 1932, to Viola and Lee St.Clair of Harlan, KS. 

Verlyn played basketball and baseball. According to resident expert, Kelly Nichols, Verlyn was one of the best natural athletes he knew. Verlyn graduated from Harlan High School in 1950 as a proud Harlan Cardinal. He planned to play baseball and basketball and was pre-vet at Kansas State; however, due to his father’s declining health, he returned to Harlan to farm and continued to farm for the remainder of his life. 

He married Doris Jean Albrecht of Smith Center, KS, on September 7, 1951. Verlyn and Doris were devoted to each other for 65-plus years. To this union, eight children were born, 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Verlyn had a passion for sports. He continued to enjoy sports through his children, grandchildren and later Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. One of his and Doris’s favorite pastimes was horseracing. They made many friends at Fonner Park. They traveled to Church Hill Downs, Santa Anita and various other tracks across the country to view horseracing.

As a couple, Verlyn and Doris were involved in the Harlan and Smith Center communities. They were active members of the Harlan Church. Special memories with family and friends were created in the harvest field, at the river and during hunting seasons. Ma and Pa Kettle were their CB handles. Holidays were standing room only with the “real” Santa visiting on Christmas eve – the family was large, loud and fun. Verlyn was happiest hosting in his family home, designed and built by him and his wife, Doris. They purchased the Harlan Schoolhouse and repurposed the brick and lumber to build their home. Verlyn and Doris’s children remember having to clean a specific number of bricks based on their age after school.

Verlyn never knew a stranger; he had the extraordinary ability to befriend anyone and strike up a conversation, everyone and anyone was welcome in his home.

Verlyn farmed the majority of his life. His wife’s declining health took him off the tractor. Verlyn’s love of family was evident as he faithfully cared for his father, grandmother, mother, aunt, mother-in-law and then his loving wife in their home.

Verlyn is survived by his son Steve St.Clair and Carla of Harlan, KS; daughter Mary Ann and husband Rick Kelleher of Fort Collins, CO; son Ron and wife Tracy St.Clair of Smith Center, KS; daughter Penny and husband Russell Hendrich of Portis, KS; son JR St.Clair and Sandy of Denver, CO; son LeJohn St.Clair and Carrie of Sidney, NE; son Tracy and wife Michelle St.Clair of Lincoln, NE; sister Karen Younger of Hays, KS, as well as 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife Doris Jean St.Clair, his son Tony Allan St.Clair; brother Don St.Clair; mother and father Lee and Viola St.Clair; mother and father-in-law Loyal and Mary Albrecht; sisters-in-law Michelle St.Clair and Marilyn Saunders, and brothers-in-law Bill Younger, Dean Raney, and Leon Saunders.

On the day of his passing, there was three and a half inches of rain. Like the old saying goes, “When a good old farmer dies, the skies will cry.” Moments after his passing, a beautiful, serene photo was taken right outside his home, which displayed a bright streak of light shooting up from his homestead to the heavens, passing through the full moon. His departure has left a void in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
