Myrna Joyce Branstetter-Schartz, 74, passed away on September 3, 2023, at Chisholm Place in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on September 21, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Pauline (Ferrell) Beal. 

On December 12, 1993, she married James “Jake” Branstetter in Las Vegas, Nevada; he passed away on July 20, 2007. Myrna married Joseph “Joe” Jakl in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 22, 2015. He survives.&nbsp;

A long-time resident of Great Bend, having spent some time in Denver, Colorado, and Manhattan, Kansas, Myrna worked as an outside sales representative for OPI. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and former member of the Great Bend Pilot Club.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, of the home; stepson Jeffrey Branstetter of Minneola, Kansas; stepdaughters Jana (Don) Thimesch and Julie Pacino, all of Kingman, Kansas; a niece, Kerry J. Lampe; great-nephew Cameron Lampe of Shawnee, Kansas; great-niece Taylor (Drew) FitzGerald of Lawrence, Kansas; numerous cousins including Virginia Shawver of Wichita, Kansas, Bonnie Springfield, Virginia (Bob) Ricky of Cassville, Missouri, Pete (Brenda) Fuller of Stafford, Kansas, Nila Rouck of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Linda Stone of El Reno, Oklahoma.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by husbands, Robert Choitz, Jake Branstetter, and Thon Schartz; stepson, James Ross Branstetter; stepdaughter Brenda Branstetter; her parents; sister Sue (Beal) Lampe-Huss; nephew John R. Lampe; and cousin Sylvia Springfield.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding. Inurnment will follow at a later date.

Adelia Lavond Cate was born Thursday, August 9, 1928 in Almena, Kansas. She was the second child of Clarence and Helen Cate. She passed away September 2, 2023 at the age of 95 at the Andbe Home in Norton.

Adelia’s brother and only sibling Robert was 4 ½ years older. In April 1943, Dorothy and Dolores Woodard came to live with her family and became her sisters. She entered first grade at Almena Grade School where her teacher was Miss Opal Voight (later became Opal Graham). The principal was Mr. J.E. Rankin. Adelia graduated eighth grade and entered high school the next year. 

After graduation in the Class of 1946, she enrolled in Central Business College of Denver, Co. She completed her training there and worked in Denver for several years. Her jobs in Denver were as secretary and in accounting at the Denver Post and Denver Fire/Clay.

She became friends in high school with Dean Wilnerd. He served in Uncle Sam’s Army in the South Pacific during World War II. After being wounded in Japan he was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. When he was discharged he came back to Almena and started farming. 

They were married on February 4, 1951 at the Almena Congregational Church and lived in the Almena area. Their two daughters were born while living southwest of Calvert on 36 highway. Nancy Ann Hogan was born January 22, 1955 and Gayle Lea Tacha was born February 20, 1958. They purchased their home on Rd I in 1960.

Adelia began her career as a school secretary while still in high school. She enrolled in an office practice class and worked for Mr. Rankin. After she married, she began working for Mr. Rankin in the high school office and worked for the schools for 35 years before retiring in 1990. During those years, there were 10 different superintendents. At one time she worked for ½ day for the high school and ½ for the grade school. When school unification came along, she applied to the Unification Board and worked for them during the interim time. There were many struggles, but Northern Valley Schools was organized and has been a blessing for the two communities. Adelia had many duties; she was the secretary to the superintendent, clerk of the board, bookkeeper for the district and high school office secretary. As duties increased, elementary secretaries were added to the office staff.

Adelia was a member of the Congregational Church of Almena, and they both served in many capacities within the church. 

She was a 60-year member and Past Noble Grand of the Rebeka Lodge, a 75 year member and past president of Paul D. Linnell Legion Auxiliary (she is still a current member) and a member and past president of the Almena Study Club. During the years she worked she was a member of the Kansas Education Secretaries Association and the Kansas Association of School Business Officials. Continuing education was available through these professional organizations, and she learned methods to improve the processes to make the business office run more proficiently.

School has been an important part of our family life and her two daughters have worked within the schools. Nancy was a para in Long Island and is currently driving a school bus route and Gayle was the secretary and treasurer of the Hoxie Schools and retired as the clerk of the board.

More than anything Adelia loved her family. The birth of her grandchildren and great children brought her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dean; brother Robert (Margorie) Cate; sister Dorothy (Keith) Chandler; sister-in-law Wanda Mae (Jack) Mechsner; brother-in-law Harold DeWayne Davis; nephews Michael Davis, Scott Davis, and Ronald Cate, and niece Debra Davis.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Almena, KS. The urn was made by her great-grandson, Hunter Hogan.

Sylvia – Hilda Flores, 66, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023 in Sylvia, Ks, surrounded by her family.

She was born November 21, 1956 in La Pastoria, Zacatecas, Mexico, the daughter of Jose and Soledad “Chole” Rojas Acevedo. &nbsp;Hilda moved from Los Angeles, CA to Kansas in 1987 and was a restaurant owner. &nbsp;

She attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville. &nbsp;

She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and family. &nbsp;She enjoyed cooking, gardening and going to the casino. &nbsp;Her home was always open to others and she loved being around family and friends.

On February 2, 1980, she married Jose Flores in Los Angeles, CA. &nbsp;He survives.

Other survivors include mother, Soledad “Chole” Acevedo, Phelan, CA; five sons, Adrian (Crystal) Flores, Spring, TX, Fabian (Jenny) Flores, Reston, VA, Damian (Diana) Flores, Chicago, IL, Gustavo (Katholeen) Flores, Hanston, KS, Jorge Flores, Derby, KS; daughter, Kristina Flores, (Josh Feinberg), Spring, TX; three brothers, Martin Acevedo, Bloomington, CA, Juan (Marilu) Acevedo, Victorville, CA, Jose Angel (Lia) Acevedo, Whittier, CA; two sisters, Maria (Abdon) Carillo, Bloomington, CA, Rosario (Froilan) DeCasas, Phelan, CA; 11 grandchildren, Audrina, Austin, Auri, Yasmine, Fabian, Xavier, Caitlin, Ava, Emery, Kaden and Mia.

Elinor Ann Wiltfong, 83, of Norton passed away September 5, 2023 at the Andbe Home. She was born June 26, 1940 on the family farm in Decatur County to Henry Matthew and Theresa Marguerita (Robben) Hickert.

Elinor attended grade school in New Almelo and graduated from Jennings High School in 1958. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Marymount College. 

Elinor married Glen Wesley Wiltfong on June 19, 1965 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, KS. 

She worked as a registered nurse for the Norton County Hospital, the state hospital and correctional facility and then retired from the Andbe Home. 

Elinor was a member of the Monday Federated Study Club, St. Francis of Assisi Altar Society, Women’s Bridge Group, Booster Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, and playing bridge and pitch, or any card game in general. Elinor especially loved following her kids and grandkids sports and school activities.

Elinor is survived by her husband, Glen of Norton; children Robert (Michelle) Wiltfong of Edmond, KS, Rodney (Linda) Wiltfong of Nolensville, TN, Robin (Scott) Sproul of Edmond, KS, and Ryan (Missy) Wiltfong of Shawnee, KS; nine grandchildren: William, Hayden, Judson, Gavin, Gentry, Greeley, Gatlin, Madeline, and Dexter; sisters Ida Mae Hoover of Lady Lake, FL and Elizabeth Richards of Rapid City, SD; sister-in-law Lila Hickert of Hutchinson, KS, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Marcellus (Virginia) Hickert, Emory (Mildred) Hickert, Norman (Wava) Hickert, Marie (Charley) Vavroch, and Gordon Hickert and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Hoover and Thaddius Richards.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, September 8 at the funeral home. A wake service and rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m.

Ada Leota Belt, 95, passed away September 3, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born July 15, 1928 in Hooker, Oklahoma, the daughter of Willard Earl and Ada Florence Parker Mead.

A longtime area resident, she worked as an LMHT at Larned State Hospital for 34 years. On July 1, 2009, she moved to Otis to be near her daughter, Linda Hughes.&nbsp;

On March 23, 1946 she married Lloyd Belt at Belpre, Kansas; he preceded her in death on March 1, 1996.

Survivors include daughter Linda Hughes and Keith Davis, Otis; daughter-in-law Joyce Belt, Kansas City, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Ada Parker Mead; husband, Lloyd Belt; six brothers, Lloyd Mead, Roy Mead, Evart Mead, Vernon Mead, Eldon Mead and Carold Mead; and a son, Wesley Belt.

Jeanene Faye Kneedler was born on February 8, 1941 in Goodland Kansas, the second of three children born to Ralph and Mildred (Fairbanks) Kneedler.

She grew up in the Burlington area, graduating with the class of 1959.&nbsp; Shortly after graduation she met and married Dale Mason who was working for Dean Sailer as a barber.

This union was blessed with three children, Cindy Jean, Jo Ann and Jay Dee. Jeanene spent her life spelling her name for everyone, so she wanted her children to have simple names that everyone could spell.

Dale and Jeanene lived in various places in Eastern Colorado, settling in their current home in Seibert, Colorado after Dale retired from C-DOT in 2002.&nbsp; Jeanene loved to be a homemaker.&nbsp; She loved to can, taking various prizes at the Kit Carson County Fair, which she was very proud of.

The greatest joy of her life was when she became a grandma to nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was diagnosed with cancer in June and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Grand Junction on August 21, 2023.

Jeanene was proceeded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mildred Kneedler; in-laws, Cliff and Averil Mason; sister Marlene Hookum, brother Tom Kneedler, and twin great-granddaughters, Kaitlin and Emily Brophy.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years Dale Mason, daughters Cindy (Mike) Taylor, Jo (Ed) Benson, and Jay (Shawna) Mason, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Seibert.

&nbsp; Stephen John (Steve) Irsik, Jr., 76, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 after battling cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones at his daughter and son in law’s home. Steve was born on November 1, 1946 in Dodge City, Kansas.

 He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Allen Irsik, and his father, Stephen J. Irsik, Sr.

Throughout his lifetime, Steve witnessed great changes and events in our world including the tumult of the Vietnam War, the momentous addition of Hawaii as the 50th state of the U.S., the debut sale of Certified Angus Beef in 1978, the esteemed recognition of Norman Borlaug with the Nobel Peace Prize, and the global sweep of a pandemic.

Steve attended high school in Ingalls, KS and later attended Kansas State University to study ag economics. 

During his time in school, Steve met Kay and married her before serving in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant Sergeant Medic during the Vietnam War. Soon after their marriage, Steve and Kay welcomed two beautiful children, Michele and Stephen. 

From his early days in 4-H, Steve was always deeply and actively passionate about crops, soil, water, and cattle. After serving in the Air Force, he returned home to join his father in expanding their farming operation rooted in the very land where his grandmother first set foot in 1880, arriving by stagecoach from Ellis Island. 

He was a visionary entrepreneur who masterfully integrated the cattle and grain segments of a diverse business portfolio that spanned farming, ranching, dairy, feed milling, and more. Steve’s business ventures were often the product of his adept abilities as a collaborator, often bringing many organizations and individuals together to the success of all. 

Beyond his business acumen, Steve was deeply rooted in community service. He followed in his father’s footsteps serving as Gray County Commissioner, was chairman of the Kansas Water Authority, Royal Farms Dairy, and Irsik Farms Inc. Additionally, he served on the Kansas State University Board of Ag, made a notable run as a Kansas Senate candidate, and held influential roles on various other boards and foundations. A fervent advocate for Kansas State University, Steve was honored as a Distinguished Alumni and Alumni Fellow in 2008. 

Throughout his life, he selflessly contributed to many organizations, programs and individuals dedicated to improving the communities of Kansas and beyond. His legacy seamlessly blends professional distinction with unwavering community dedication.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by wife Kay Irsik of Hays, Kansas; his two children Stephen J. Irsik III of Haviland, Kansas and Michele Irsik Flax and husband Tim of Hays, Kansas; brothers Mike Irsik and wife Debbie of Emporia, Kansas, Max Irsik and wife Linda of Flagler Beach, Florida, Robert Irsik and wife Ellen of Ingalls, Kansas, and Ron Irsik and wife Tricia of Columbus, Ohio; his four grandchildren Katelyn (Justin) Hersch of Overland Park, Kansas, Mikaela (Carson) Jennings of Buffalo, New York, TJ Flax of Manhattan, Kansas, and Joseph Flax of Manhattan, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he was very proud.

He was a true inspiration to all with his progressive mindset and love for those around him. He often reminded us with the adage, 'Keep your fork,' signifying that the best moments, like desert, are yet to unfold. Steve’s best moments are upon him, indeed.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with The Most Reverend Ronald Gilmore and Rev. Tim Hickey presiding. Graveside dedication to follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard and Southwest Kanas Veterans Honor Guard. There will be no calling hours.

Beyond his business acumen, Steve was deeply rooted in community service. He followed in his father’s footsteps serving as Gray County Commissioner, was chairman of the Kansas Water Authority, Royal Farms Dairy, and Irsik Farms Inc. Additionally, he served on the Kansas State University Board of Ag, made a notable run as a Kansas Senate candidate, and held influential roles on various other boards and foundations. A fervent advocate for Kansas State University, Steve was honored as a Distinguished Alumni and Alumni Fellow in 2008. Throughout his life, he selflessly contributed to many organizations, programs and individuals dedicated to improving the communities of Kansas and beyond. His legacy seamlessly blends professional distinction with unwavering community dedication.He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by wife Kay Irsik of Hays, Kansas; his two children Stephen J. Irsik III of Haviland, Kansas and Michele Irsik Flax and husband Tim of Hays, Kansas; brothers Mike Irsik and wife Debbie of Emporia, Kansas, Max Irsik and wife Linda of Flagler Beach, Florida, Robert Irsik and wife Ellen of Ingalls, Kansas, and Ron Irsik and wife Tricia of Columbus, Ohio; his four grandchildren Katelyn (Justin) Hersch of Overland Park, Kansas, Mikaela (Carson) Jennings of Buffalo, New York, TJ Flax of Manhattan, Kansas, and Joseph Flax of Manhattan, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he was very proud.He was a true inspiration to all with his progressive mindset and love for those around him. He often reminded us with the adage, 'Keep your fork,' signifying that the best moments, like desert, are yet to unfold. DIGHTON - Delores Dutoit, 88, died on Monday, September 4, 2023 at her home in Dighton. She was born on July 20, 1935 at Bazine the daughter of Jake and Irene (Steiben) Adolph. She married Don “Buck” Dutoit on January 9, 1955 at Beeler. He died on December 23, 2006.

Delores graduated from Beeler High School. 

After her marriage she moved to Dighton. She was a homemaker while raising her children and then worked at Western Auto, Harold Jones, Attorney of Law and finally for Arnold Linden at State Farm Insurance. 

She was a member of United Methodist Church where she was very active and headed the funeral dinner committee. She enjoyed cooking for others and socializing with her many friends and also knitting, jigsaw puzzles and collecting cook books and dishes. The JOY Center, Red Hatters and her church were very important parts of her life.

She is survived by her daughter Ruby and Darrell Martin of Dighton, son&nbsp; Kurt and Diana Dutoit of Pratt, five grandchildren-Michelle and Jonathan Elliott of Wichita, Keeli Starks of Hutchinson, Stephanie Ward of Pratt, Wade and Amber Martin of Buhler and Krae and Kinsey Dutoit of Bennington, Nebraska, 15 great-grandchildren, sister Joyce Johnson of Ness City, and sister-in-law LaVone Hoss of Ness City. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Vickie Ann Riedel, 71, Salina, died December 16, 2022.

Vickie was born on November 13, 1951 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Benedict (Ben) and Dolorine (Dolly) (Sauer) Riedel.&nbsp;

Vickie worked at Tony’s Pizza, Kansas Wesleyan and as a housekeeper. After retiring she cooked and kept the scoreboard for the Rec Dept during the summers.&nbsp; In her spare time, she enjoyed her garden, flower beds, crafting, and spending time with her friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her brother, Lennie Riedel and her nephew Craig Walters.

Survivors include her sister, Pearl Flax (Lawrence) of Salina, nephew Rickie Flax, nieces, Cindy Walters, Cheryl West (Mark), Shelly Roth (Tony), Carrie Towns (Travis), April Baker (Scott) and several great nieces and great nephews. She also had two small dogs, Coco and Meme.

A private family service was held with burial at All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Salina.

Survivors include her sons Jonathan Jensen of Kirwin, Jimmie Lamb of Glade; a daughter Kristin Jensen of Pueblo, CO; and 23 grandchildren.

John Richard Weber, known to many as “Webby” went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 1 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 79.

John was born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 21, 1944, to parents Lester and Leona Weber. John began his education in Shawnee Mission, Kansas where he played basketball and football at Shawnee Mission North High School. After graduation, he attended Kansas University at Lawrence Kansas to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. 

He met his wife Jeanie Rogers while they were both attending KU. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a lifetime proud Jay Hawk.

John and Jeanie Rogers were married in Hays, Kansas to begin a beautiful marriage of 56 years.

He began his petroleum career in Richmond, California with Standard Oil refinery as a refinery engineer. They moved to San Francisco to work for Chevron where he was a lubricant specialist. They moved back to Kansas City where he worked for Interstate Oil as a vice president of production and a minor partner. 

When the company was bought out by a major oil company, John and Jeanie decided to start a new career in Colorado as owners of a pet food and supply store. They moved their family to Evergreen and then to Bailey Colorado where they built a beautiful house on 49 acres on the side of a mountain. John loved living in the mountains where he could be close to skiing and beautiful scenery.

 After several years of hauling hay, running the store, and plowing snow from their roads and parking lots, they sold the business and moved to Tulsa to take care of John’s aging parents. Following the death of John’s parents, they moved to Broken Arrow to retire. 

They started their RV adventures in Colorado but continued after they moved to Oklahoma. They became very active in an RV group and made many longtime friends as they traveled to beautiful places in Oklahoma and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. John loved being out in the RV, walking, and watching all the KU football and basketball games.

He is survived by his wife, Hays native Jeanie Rogers Weber in Broken Arrow and daughter Ellen Jacobs of Topeka, Kansas. 

He was preceded in death by the death of his son Anthony Weber. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Tea Jacobs, Anthony Everett, Jennifer Eye, Alex Cassels, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother David Weber and David’s wife Marsha from Florida, their daughter Angie, and her husband Matt.

A memorial service will be held on September 6 at St. Patrick Episcopal Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Donations can be made in his honor to St. Patrick Episcopal Church or to an animal rescue/humane society of your choice. John and Jeanie have a great love for pets in need.

Robert Charley "Basswood Bob" Oliva, Ely Minn.

Robert Charley "Basswood Bob" Oliva (62) was born on September 27, 1960 in Plainville, Kansas, to Ruth Lee (Price) and Charley Robert Oliva. Tragically, Bob lost his life in an automobile accident near his home in Ely, Minnesota, on August 24, 2023.

Raised in Russell, Kansas, Bob was no stranger to adventures with his siblings. From a young age, you could find him making any excuse to visit Lake Wilson to fish or water ski. He continued his passion for the outdoors as a member of the local boy scout troop, where he made memories each year, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1979.

Bob graduated from Russell High School in 1979, and from Pittsburgh State University in 1983. He gained the skills and knowledge of an experienced carpenter and was known for his attention to detail and love for the craft.

Bob was a cherished member of the Ely community. His passion for the outdoors led him to create lasting memories for others through guided fishing tours, which started in the 1980s when he was employed by Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base, and dogsledding tours on the Boundary Waters. He was also a handyman and carpenter.

Bob will be remembered for his warm-hearted nature, his sense of adventure, his sly sense of humor, and his commitment to sharing the beauty of the wilderness with others. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, exploration, and a deep connection to the natural world - having spent his final days with several of his siblings doing what he loved.

Proceeding in his death are his parents, and adoptive father, Boyd Knackstedt.

Alan Lynn Huntley, 66, passed away on September 1, 2023, in Oberlin, Kansas. Alan was born on November 10, 1956, to Eldon and Opal Marie (Cross) Huntley in Oberlin, Kansas. 

Alan made his home in Traer, Kansas until his marriage to Connie Wagner in McCook, Nebraska where they lived for several years then moved to Minden, Nebraska.

Alan was a master of anything he did. He had numerous jobs. He worked at Cornbelt Chemical in McCook, Nebraska. Upon moving to Minden he worked at Coleman Manufacturing then went to CPI in Funk, Nebraska. He also worked at an ethanol plant near Minden and Funk and the Minden OK Tire Company. Alan also worked for Paul Landers who was a father figure to him and worked for Brad Larson who was his good friend here in Oberlin. 

In his spare time he loved to fish, hunt, watch old movies, and mostly spend time with grandchildren and great grandchild.

Alan is survived by Connie and her children Chris (Lisa) Cohen, Bryan Cohen, Tanya Cohen; grandchildren Emily (Travis Dowling) Cohen and Lily Cohen; great-grandchild Makenzie Dowling; siblings Kristi (Jim) Bond, Gaylen (Vicky) Huntley, Mark (Becky) Huntley, Daniel (Doreen) Huntley and many nieces and nephews. 

Alan is preceded by his parents Eldon and Opal Huntley, sister Suzanne Huntley and grandparents. Alan will be missed by all family and friends who know him.

Alan was born on November 10, 1956, to Eldon and Opal Marie (Cross) Huntley in Oberlin, Kansas. Alan made his home in Traer, Kansas until his marriage to Connie Wagner in McCook, Nebraska where they lived for several years then moved to Minden, Nebraska.Alan was a master of anything he did. He had numerous jobs. He worked at Cornbelt Chemical in McCook, Nebraska. Upon moving to Minden he worked at Coleman Manufacturing then went to CPI in Funk, Nebraska. He also worked at an ethanol plant near Minden and Funk and the Minden OK Tire Company. Alan also worked for Paul Landers who was a father figure to him and worked for Brad Larson who was his good friend here in Oberlin. In his spare time he loved to fish, hunt, watch old movies, and mostly spend time with grandchildren and great grandchild.Alan is survived by Connie and her children Chris (Lisa) Cohen, Bryan Cohen, Tanya Cohen; grandchildren Emily (Travis Dowling) Cohen and Lily Cohen; great-grandchild Makenzie Dowling; siblings Kristi (Jim) Bond, Gaylen (Vicky) Huntley, Mark (Becky) Huntley, Daniel (Doreen) Huntley and many nieces and nephews. Alan is preceded by his parents Eldon and Opal Huntley, sister Suzanne Huntley and grandparents. Alan will be missed by all family and friends who know him.Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Pauls Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m.. Alan Lynn Huntley

Rita Gertrude (Lindeman) Beckman, 101, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 3, 2023. She was born on a farm in Sheridan County, near Seguin on July 23,1922, to Louis and Anne (Moellering) Lindeman. 

Rita attended Pleasant Ridge School which was one mile south of their farmstead. She was the second child in the family and grew up helping her mother take care of her seven siblings.

She met the love of her life, Francis Beckman, at a dance, and they dated before he served in and after he returned from World War II. They were married on April 22, 1947. They created a homestead in western Sheridan County by updating an abandoned house on the property and planting hundreds of trees.

Rita used her many skills to be a wonderful homemaker and mother. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed the greater share of the clothing for herself and the children, including First Communion dresses and formal gowns.

Rita was a hard worker, and it was important to do all things well that needed to be done to keep up the home and yard, and to care for her family. She had the most beautiful, well-kept yard, flowers, and garden. She proudly furnished fresh flowers for summer Sunday Masses. She loved to cook/bake and was well known for her bread/rolls.

Rita and Francis were long term devout members of the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Seguin. Rita served as president of St. Ann’s Sodality in the parish for several years. She was instrumental in planning the remodeling of the church which included the addition of indoor restrooms in the basement and new stained-glass windows upstairs. She also worked with the refurbishing of the center altar and statues in the church cemetery.

She enjoyed participating in bowling leagues at the former Hoxie Bowling Alley. She loved to play cards, learned to play golf, and enjoyed dancing. Her courage and keen business sense allowed her to be quite accomplished in taking care of their investment savings. She loved to travel and enjoyed family vacations.

In the sixties, Rita worked diligently on house plans for their new home which the family moved into in 1966. She designed much of the home, and it is a testament to her hard work, organization, and vision that the home was a model of beautiful woodwork, design, and efficiency.

She worked with Colby Community College Outreach to obtain her GED in the spring of 1969, the same year Lottie earned her AA degree. They were awarded their diplomas the same evening at Colby Community College ceremonies.

Rita lovingly took care of Francis at their home as he struggled with Parkinson’s disease until she was no longer able to do so. When Francis died in 2009 after 62 years of marriage, she kept up the farmhouse, the yard, and her flower garden until she fell in a yard accident, breaking her arm and hip. She then moved to Sheridan County Assisted Living Complex in Hoxie. She loved her view of the courtyard and the flowers from her apartment and established a new cozy home there. After several years, she experienced health issues which precipitated her move to Sheridan County Long Term Care. She spent a total of 10 years in Assisted Living and LTC.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; her siblings, Oliver (Vi), Louis “Dyke,” Mary Ann Andersen (Bud), Adele Thomas, Ray, infant Betty Jane, and son-in-law, Vic Ignacio.

She is survived by her brothers, Dennis Lindeman (Helen), Bob Lindeman; sister-in-law, Alice Lindeman; children, Lottie Ignacio, Clifton, VA, Lynette Andregg (Ted) of Colby, KS, Stuart Beckman (Anita) of Hoxie, KS, and Nancy Beckman (Carrie) of Lewes, DE. Rita was close to her six grandchildren who all survive, Travis Spillman (Malaina) and family, Brandon Beckman (Tisha) and family, Brent Beckman and family, Kristen Cillessen (Chad) and family, Kayla Chaffee (Luke) and family, and Dave Ball (Sara) and Coltlyn.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Thursday, September 7, 2023, 10:30 a.m., at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Sequin, Kansas. The Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.., family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.with a Vigil and Rosary at 7:00 p.m.all at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home.

 In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. Martin Parish or to Hospice of Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Memorials may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, P.O. Box 987, Hoxie, KS 67740.

Merla Jean Rhodes, age 90, a longtime resident of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis, Kansas. She was born on October 21, 1932, in rural Decatur County, Kansas, to Merle E. and Lorna M. (Stimbert) Bishop. 

She married Delbert Rhodes in 1956. Sadly, Delbert preceded her in death on August 22, 1969.

Merla's early years were spent on a farm in rural Decatur County, where she received her education in Oberlin and attended a country school. She dedicated 27 years of her life to working in housekeeping at the Oberlin Good Samaritan Society Care Center. Afterward, she lived at Centennial Towers in Hays for 18 years before relocating to Ellis two years ago.

Merla had a passion for playing cards, listening to country music and was an avid reader. She also held a deep affection for animals, particularly horses, and enjoyed riding.

She is survived by her loving children: Marty Rhodes of Hays, KS; Lori Leiker and her husband, Ron, of Hays, KS; and Dennis Rhodes and his wife, Mary, of Gardner, KS. She is also survived by her six cherished grandchildren: Jeff Leiker, Drew Rhodes, Daniel Rhodes and his wife, Alyssa, Sarah Hilgenkamp and her husband, Tyler, Joshua Rhodes and his wife, Brittney, and Gabrielle Rhodes, along with her 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Delbert, Merla was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Derry Bishop, and her granddaughter-in-law, Katherine Leiker.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Cline's-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, located at 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making memorial contributions payable to the Humane Society of the High Plains, care of Cline's-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.
