James Douglas “Smitty” Smith passed away on August 2, 2023, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, KS, at the age of 68. He leaves behind countless friends, a loving family, and too many laughter-filled stories to count.

Smitty came bursting into the world on July 15, 1955, to Jack and Katie (Henning) Smith in Hutchinson, KS.

Smitty spent most of his years causing trouble and creating fun in WaKeeney, and graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1973. He spent many years working in maintenance for the hospital and then the Best Western Hotel, using his skills to fix things while sharing his humor along the way.

Smitty loved to play golf and pickleball, and some of his favorite moments were spent hunting pheasants in the wide-open plains with his beloved dogs. But his true love was his life partner Barb Farber; she stole his heart from the moment they met and never let go.

Smitty truly embraced life, living large and making the most of every moment. He loved laughing, and making others laugh. When God said, “Love thy neighbor,” Smitty said, “Will do!” and took it to heart. There’s not a single thing he wouldn’t do for his friends, and as many people have said, “The world could use more Smitties.”

Smitty is survived by his sister-in-law, Karen Smith of Centennial, CO; and nieces Stacy Smith of Evergreen, CO and Amy (Tom) Kelly and their children Bria and Caitlyn of Aurora, CO.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Katie Smith; partner, Barbara Farber; brother, Steven Smith; and young sisters, Carol Lynn Smith and Katherine Sue Smith. He also had many dogs that we know he was happy to be reunited with in heaven.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the Western Kansas Saloon in WaKeeney. Smitty would not want us to mourn, so we want to celebrate a life well lived; and encourage you to wear KC Chiefs attire and be prepared to share stories. A graveside service will be held Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Daniel David DeWitt, 59, passed away August 3, 2023, at his home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on July 20, 1964, in Hays, Kansas, to Donald and Marth (Triebel) DeWitt.&nbsp;

Dan grew up in and graduated from Concordia, Kansas, later moving to Coffeyville, Kansas, then to Hoisington, Kansas, where he lived for several years. Dan enjoyed participating in Special Olympics in Concordia and Great Bend.

He also enjoyed spending time with his big family at the many family reunions. Dan liked fishing, playing cards, and horseshoes.

Dan is survived by three brothers, Ed (Judy) DeWitt of Hesston, Kansas, Vern DeWitt of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Gene DeWitt of Pensacola, Florida; three sisters, Deb (Jerry) Davis of Hoisington, Kansas, Ruby (Randy) Barnes of Independence, Kansas, and Susan Sisco of Nowata, Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Cremation has taken place with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

Phoenix, Arizona resident Cindy Jackson passed away on March 23, 2023 at her home. &nbsp;She was 65.

Cindy was born June 21, 1957 in Loveland, CO, the daughter of Ronald and Robin (Larken) Jackson. &nbsp;

She graduated from the Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, KS.

She was united in marriage to Larry Gwennup in 1975. &nbsp;The couple later divorced.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Ronald.

Survivors include her mother Robin Jackson of Glade, KS; sisters Georgia Jackson of Louisville, KY and Lori Jackson Russ and husband Justin of Stockton, KS; and a nephew William Thurman of Archie, MO.

Graveside services celebrating Cindy’s life will be Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade, KS.

Glen Alan Befort passed away peacefully July 26, 2023 with his loved ones by his side.

Glenn was born Feb. 9, 1941 to Philomena and Fidelis Befort in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

After growing up on the farm in Munjor, Kansas and attending Ft. Hays State, Glenn received his bachelor of science in electrical engineering at Kansas State.&nbsp;

Glenn and Emily met at Kansas State, married in 1964, and moved to Rochester, MN where Glenn began his storied career at IBM. After stints in Florida and Georgia, the family settled for awhile in Austin, TX. Glenn continued his career with Rolm and Siemens (division president and CEO) in communications. Glenn and Emily moved to California for awhile before settling back in Texas in Berry Creek, Georgetown. After serving as CEO of ARC Wireless Solutions, Glenn retired to become a full-time golfer.&nbsp;

Glenn developed amazing friendships on and off the course over the years in Berry Creek. He and Emily enjoyed regularly playing bridge, participating in Diner's Club, and socializing with friends. He always treasured those times and the memories made.&nbsp;

Glenn especially cherished his time with family. He is survived by his wife, Emily, of 59 years, and his two daughters Lisa Correll (husband Jeff) and Michelle Teets (husband Darren). Glenn is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah (husband Chris), Haley, Cassidy, Olivia, Jessica (husband Charles), Ian, Jacob, and two great-grandchildren, Harrison and Evelyn. He was thrilled to learn of another great-grandchild-to-be the week before he passed.

Let's celebrate Glenn's life and love for golf - please wear casual attire (yes, that includes golf attire!) to his service. Reception following at Berry Creek Country Club.

James C. “JC” Underwood, moved to heaven Aug. 2, 2023, at age 80. He was born July 5, 1943, to Spencer E. and Harriett C. (Hawk) Underwood in Atchison, KS. 

He understood working for a wage at an early age and bought his first car at age 12. 

He became a United States Navy Reserve during his high school years. After graduating from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, KS, in 1961, he enlisted in the United States Navy. 

He married Doris Jo Rush on October 3, 1966, in Severance, KS. The couple made their first home in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp;

JC completed his United States Navy service in 1966 and worked a short stint at TWA while reenlisting in the military, this time the&nbsp; United States Air Force. Following his military service, he worked for Ford Motor Company in Kansas City and started his own country living in rural Cameron, MO. He bought his uncle’s sale barn in the late 1970s and this is where his passion for leather began. By 1981, he opened his own tack shop, J.J. Western, and began leather making, his newfound love. He repaired boots and saddles and began manufacturing his own tack inventory.&nbsp;

His desire to serve people extended throughout life. He was a volunteer fireman, worked on specials forces for the police department and became an EMT. He kept current on his EMT training with ambulances in Wichita, KS, and volunteered EMT services in Kiowa County, KS. He loved to study law and used his knowledge to help others. He volunteered at the Central Kansas Dream Center to help keep the pantry stocked and organized. He was a member of Faith Community Church in Great Bend.&nbsp;

After 40 years, JC retired as a saddle maker in 2021, and moved from Mullinville, KS to Great Bend, KS, where he was closer to his family. He enjoyed fishing and telling stories.&nbsp;

He was proud of his family and leaves behind, his wife, Doris; one daughter, Heidi Jo (Keith) Burton of Great Bend, KS; one son, Joseph E. “Joe” (Laura) Underwood of Vanleer, TN; seven grandchildren, Valerie Morrell (Matt Seidel) of Pratt, KS, Lucas (Janine) Burton of Ellinwood, KS, Jeffrey C. “JC” (Jonna) Bosch and Corbin J. (Rachel Wiehl) Burton all of Heizer, KS, Kara A. (Brenner) Gentry of Dickson, TN, and Katelyn Jo Underwood and Sara J. Underwood both of Vanleer, TN; five great-grandchildren, Makayla, Lilly and Kaydalyn Burton, Arley Morrell, Colson James Bosch and Blake Bosch; a sister, Ann E. Perkins of Modesto, CA; a brother, Perry H. (Josie) Underwood of Prairie Village, KS; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruby Jane Eppes from Yellville, AR.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family and friends will also gather at the funeral home prior to the graveside service, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday. &nbsp;Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with Pastor Jordan Basye presiding. Military rites will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard American Legion Riders Post 180.

He repaired boots and saddles and began manufacturing his own tack inventory.&nbsp;His desire to serve people extended throughout life. He was a volunteer fireman, worked on specials forces for the police department and became an EMT. He kept current on his EMT training with ambulances in Wichita, KS, and volunteered EMT services in Kiowa County, KS. He loved to study law and used his knowledge to help others. He volunteered at the Central Kansas Dream Center to help keep the pantry stocked and organized. He was a member of Faith Community Church in Great Bend.&nbsp;After 40 years, JC retired as a saddle maker in 2021, and moved from Mullinville, KS to Great Bend, KS, where he was closer to his family. He enjoyed fishing and telling stories.&nbsp;He was proud of his family and leaves behind, his wife, Doris; one daughter, Heidi Jo (Keith) Burton of Great Bend, KS; one son, Joseph E. “Joe” (Laura) Underwood of Vanleer, TN; seven grandchildren, Valerie Morrell (Matt Seidel) of Pratt, KS, Lucas (Janine) Burton of Ellinwood, KS, Jeffrey C. “JC” (Jonna) Bosch and Corbin J. (Rachel Wiehl) Burton all of Heizer, KS, Kara A. (Brenner) Gentry of Dickson, TN, and Katelyn Jo Underwood and Sara J. He was born on April 5, 1939, in Yuba City, California, to Neil and Elizabeth (Creggar) Livengood. Thomas was a remarkable individual whose life was dedicated to education and ecological preservation. He served as a long-time civic leader, served on the Planning Commission for 22 years and ecological leader, leaving a lasting impact on the communities he served. Thomas spent 37 years as the Director of College Auxiliary Services at Long Beach State University before retiring from his esteemed position. One of his proudest achievements was being a founding member of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Orange County, California. This reserve stands as a testament to his passion for preserving and protecting the natural world. Additionally, Thomas served as a dedicated board member of the Shipley Nature Center in Huntington Beach, California, for over 30 years, further demonstrating his commitment to environmental causes. Thomas Livengood's legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory.

He is survived by his two daughters, Debra Weeks and her husband Maurice of Ellis, Kansas, and Jody Ford and her husband Mark Geyer of Ellis. Fred Francis Bixenman, 102, of Grainfield died Wednesday, August 2, 2023. He was born on February 5, 1921, on a farm northwest of Angelus to John and Mary (Ostmeyer) Bixenman. 

Fred attended Pleasant Ridge School, a country school north of Grinnell.

 He was a farmer and rancher and attended cattle sales in the area. He was still driving to the sale barn at 91. He loved farming and checking the cattle. Fred was a good steward of his life, family and the land. He had a strong faith and loved his family, friends and community. Fred watched Wheel of Fortune each evening. He was so proud of his interview that aired on KSN Veterans Day Salute. 

He was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church of Angelus, Knights of Columbus and Grinnell VFW. Fred was drafted into the Army in November 1942 during WWII. He was assigned to the 265th Quartermaster and during some of his service held the rank of S. Sgt. His unit went to England in July of 1944 and the 265th was disbanded shortly after they arrived. He was assigned to a supply unit in Liverpool where he trained and worked until the war ended. From Liverpool his unit was transferred to Norway where they supplied other army units within the Occupation Forces. He returned home in 1946 departing from Bremen, Germany.

Fred served several years as a Sheridan County Commissioner and was Grinnell VFW #2864 commander. For many years Fred helped with the Memorial Day services honoring the veterans in Angelus, Grinnell, Hoxie and Orion. Fred was proud of his country and his military service and always had on his WWII cap. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; siblings, Joe Bixenman and Doris (Robert) Manhart.

He is survived by his children, Linda Bixenman (Jerome Gross, friend) of Hays, Ken (Colleen) Bixenman of Colby, Mary Jane (Greg) Goetz of Grinnell, Ron (Nancy) Bixenman of Grainfield and Daryl (Judy) Bixenman of Grainfield; sister, Stella Krannawitter; brother Bill Bixenman and grandchildren, Erica Moore, Jessica (Aaron) Dempewolf, Jared (Sally) Bixenman, Jaydon (Katie) Bixenman, Julian Bixenman, Nathan (Kacie) Goetz, Darren (Tori) Goetz, Eric (Jacqui) Goetz, Christina (Greg) Peterson, Christopher, Luke and Natalie Bixenman, Andrew (Tristan) Bixenman, Bailey, Brooke, Melissa, and Mason Bixenman. He also had 14 great-grandchildren, Jillian Schmidt, Ryder, Vance, Bella and Blair Dempewolf, Nova and Von Bixenman, Owen, Nora, Zela and Jovi Goetz, Logan, Kipton and Scottie Bixenman with two more to be born soon. His great-granddaughter, Scottie, was born on his 102nd birthday. His generosity to his family and others was boundless. He instilled family values and the love of the land in each of them. He was dearly loved by all of his family. Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a vigil at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 4, 2023, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Angelus. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2023, at St. Paul Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

On August 2nd of this year she left her earthly body and now resides with her Heavenly Father, and our Lord&nbsp; and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on December 22, 1947 at Fort Leavenworth Station Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to John Dee Brisco and Imogene Evelyn Winchell.

At the time of her birth, her father was in the Army Air Corps and was later absorbed into the United States Air Force. As a child growing up her father was stationed in places such as Hawaii, Japan, California, Oklahoma and Texas; it was during these deployments that she received the majority of her education. 

Whenever her father was stationed abroad where the family couldn’t accompany him, they would live with her maternal grandparents in Kansas City, Kansas. Her father later retired from the Air Force in El Paso, Texas. On June 9, 1967 she earned her operator's certificate from the 5th Texas State Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists and worked as a manicurists at a salon in El Paso, Texas. On August 12, 1969 she married Coy Davis, El Paso County, Texas and it was at that time that they moved to Garden City, Kansas. While married to Coy, she was employed as an inhalation therapist at St. Catherine Hospital. They were divorced on March 16, 1979. In 1974, she was hired by Juvenile Judge Donald Farr as a secretary for the Finney County Probation Department. She then worked as the administrative secretary for the state of Kansas 25th Judicial District Court Services Division and the state of Kansas 25th Judicial District Court. She retired on December 31, 2012 after completing 38 years of service. On May 23, 1980, she married Daryl D. Huckins at the First Christian Church, Garden City, Kansas. On May the 23rd of this year they celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending her time attending Bible studies, helping with vacation bible school and volunteering at her church. She was a member of the YMCA Aerobics and nurtured many new friends who met regularly for meals and celebrating birthdays. She also enjoyed her cross and angel collection. For years she and her husband would tour on their motorcycle and even went as far as Florida which included a round trip of 13 states. 

She is survived by her husband of the home; a brother, Anthony Brisco , Bradford, Tennessee, her son Michael (Tracy) Davis, Holcomb, Kansas and two stepsons, Shawn (Junita) and Darren (Lorraine Bruce) Huckins of Hempstead, Texas along with one maternal granddaughter and great-grandson and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren from their blended union. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and another stepson, Richard Huckins of Bellville, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. August 5, 2023 at the First Christian Church of Garden City. Kansas.

James Roger Purdy, age 73, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his home in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;He was born December 29, 1949 in Hays, Kansas, the son of John Edward and Loretta Bonita (Gross) Purdy.

Jim graduated from the St. Joseph Military Academy in 1968.

 He was united in marriage to Judith Kay Dreiling on January 2, 1971 in Hays, Kansas, and to this union two children were born, Jason and Jean.

He served as a police officer for 32 years at the Hays Police Department, retiring as the assistant chief of police in 2004.

Jim was a devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, and dog-dad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stephen and Robert Purdy; his sister, Louise (Richard) Neumann; and his in-laws, Verlin and Janie Dreiling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judith; his children Jason (Rachel) Purdy and Jean (Richard) Appelhanz; his brother Anthony (Chris) Purdy; his sisters-in-law Penny (Robert) Purdy and Carol (Stephen) Purdy; his grandchildren Joshua Purdy and significant other Samantha Assmann, Richard Appelhanz, Morgan Purdy, Allison Appelhanz and significant other Sierra Paden, and Jonathan Appelhanz; his beloved fur babies, Jaguar and Tesla; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Denton Ralph “Rip” Schlegel, 78, passed away on July 31, 2023, at Azria Health, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on June 20, 1945, at Hoisington, Kansas, to Ralph &amp; Carrie (Gustin) Schlegel. 

On October 27, 1973, he married Linda Monroe at Hoisington, Kansas. &nbsp;She died November 28, 2010.

Mr. Schlegel was a lifetime resident of Barton County. 

He was a 1963 graduate of Otis High School. During his time in high school, he earned the nickname “Rip” for how he would rip the nets from basketball goals and make three-point shots before they were a common shot made. 

Denton worked as a machinist at Great Bend Industries for over 30 years. 

When he wasn’t mowing yards or being directed in life by Linda and Glen, he enjoyed polka dances and loved going to Las Vegas.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Jeannette (Ken) Clark of Shawnee; nieces and nephews; and many friends.&nbsp;

Denton is preceded in death by his wife; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Wanda Schlegel; his parents; and his parents-in-law, Glen and Rosemary Monroe.

Friends may sign the book noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Arthur “Art” Francis Wagner was born on October 17, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, to Arthur A. Wagner and Hedwig (Werth) Wagner. He passed from this life on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 74 years. 

Art was reared and educated in Victoria, Kansas, and graduated with the Victoria High School Class of 1966. He furthered his education at Fort Hays Kansas State College in Hays and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree in business. 

Art married Joyce (Rohr) Wagner on August 30, 1969, in Vincent, Kansas. 

He spent most of his working life as a corporate tax specialist with Cities Service, later known as Occidental Petroleum, before his retirement after 40-plus years. 

Art was a longtime faithful member of St. Henry Catholic Church in Owasso, Oklahoma, where he was active with the Men’s Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed a variety of pastimes such as hunting, fishing, bowling, reading, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his loving wife of over 53 years,&nbsp;Joyce Wagner;&nbsp;three sons,&nbsp;Todd Wagner and wife Vicki,&nbsp;Bryan Wagner and wife Belinda,&nbsp;Jason Wagner and wife Christine;&nbsp;seven grandchildren,&nbsp;Ethan Wagner, Camdyn Wagner, Mason Mathis, Maddie Mathis, Maizy Wagner, Sydney Wagner, and Ryan Mathis;&nbsp;three siblings,&nbsp;Ron Wagner, Jeanette Pfannenstiel, and Gary Wagner

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Hedwig, two brothers, Arthur Anthony, Jr., and Gene, and his sister, Nellie.

Morgan D. “Smitty” Smith, 92, passed away on July 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on January 2, 1931, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the son of John P. and Pauline (Swann) Smith.&nbsp;

On June 2, 1956, he married Norma L. Whitsel at First Christian Church in Great Bend, Kansas. &nbsp;She died October 20, 2021.

Mr. Smith was a resident of Hoisington for 60 years, coming from Lawton, Oklahoma, and Great Bend. 

He was the owner and operator of Smith Acid Company. 

Morgan was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend and V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, painting portraits and landscapes, tinkering with watches and guns, and gardening. His family was left with his many examples and lessons of the importance of a strong work ethic and a giving, charitable nature.&nbsp;

Survivors include five children, Michael D. (Debbie) Smith of Hoisington, Randall D. Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, Sabrina (Oscar) Mariño of Lawrence, Sonya (Wayde) Brozek of Wamego, and Kevin (Jennifer) Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma; his parents; and siblings, Gloria Guyselman, Marie Yarmuk, and Paul Smith.

“Wilma” Mumm Ritter, born Helena Wilhelmina Mumm, was born to Anthony (Tony) and Mary (Kemper) Mumm on November 22nd, 1931, on the family Homestead in Selden.

 She graduated from Selden High School as salutatorian in 1949. 

On November 23, 1950, Wilma was united in marriage to Cletus Henry Ritter at the Sacred Heart Church in Selden, Kansas.

In her early years, she enjoyed riding horses and the bicycle she shared with her brother Carl, and eventually sharing the bicycle with her children. She started driving when she was in the 8th grade and drove herself to school where math was her least favorite subject. Wilma enjoyed playing the piano, watching westerns on television and dancing and listening to polka music and, also line dancing. She enjoyed riding in the car to see the county and was so happy to finally purchase a brand-new car. Mom enjoyed playing bingo and to let everyone know she bingo.

Wilma was a homemaker, farmer’s wife and was blessed with nine children. She loved sewing and making her kids clothes like the girl’s dresses and the boy’s shirts. There was never a shortage of good home-cooked meals in the house. Wilma loved cooking and bringing her family together centered around the table. Many hours were spent outside where she fed the chickens, gathered eggs, milked cows, and had a large plentiful vegetable and flower garden.

She had many talents including creating beautiful wedding cakes. Her first wedding cake was for her eldest daughter’s wedding in 1972. She spent many hours baking and frosting her creations and they were used to celebrate many joyous occasions for her family and community. She took pictures of the hundreds of cakes she created over a 45-year span. In addition to her cakes, she made the best homemade ice cream.

After her family had grown up and moved out, she worked at Stop to Shop in Hoxie as a cook, for a dairy farm milking cows and was a cook for the school district in Rexford. Her love of caring for others continued as she took care of those in need with home healthcare visits.

She belonged to the Sacred Heart Church of Selden and Altar Society, and Selden Garden Club and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Citizen Center. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary every day until COVID. Then she started praying the rosary twice a day.

She loved spending time with her family, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids and caring for others and how much she enjoyed them. She lived her life full of love, warmth, and compassion and was rarely upset or unhappy. She radiated sheer goodness, patience, and positivity.

Proceeding her in death was her husband Cletus, her daughter Patricia, her parents, her brothers, Francis and Carl, and many other family members.

She is survived by her sons Bernard (and Barbara) Ritter, Robert (and Laura) Ritter, Michael (and friend Rhonda) Ritter, daughters Juanita (and Ken) Denning, Karen Simon, Mariane Garza, Janet Baalman, Carleen (and Steve) Brewer and 32 grandkids, 48 great-grandkids, five great-great-grandkids, sisters-in-law Bernadine Spresser, Margaret Ritter, and Frieda Goetze.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 10:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Family will receive guests from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Selden Cemetery.

Billy George Akin-Summers, age 59, of Garfield, Kansas passed away on Saturday evening, July 29, 2023 at his home after a long battle with COPD and congestive heart failure. &nbsp;Billy was born on October 31, 1963 to Elvis McFarland and Loretta Yocham in Vian, Oklahoma. &nbsp;His mother later married Elmer Akin, who adopted Billy. &nbsp;

Billy belonged to a large family of 12 sisters and 8 brothers: &nbsp;Marylou, John, and James (and Leslie) of Arkansas; Gladys, Edna (and Jim), Tracy, Doug (and Lori), and Les of Kansas; Betty (and Dan), Bea (and Neev), Ethel, Lisa (and John), Don, and Jesse (and Kim) of Oklahoma. 

Billy made a living by hanging drywall, roofing, and did some truck driving. He was known to be a jokester and often made up names to make you laugh.

Billy married Sandra Hill in 1992. &nbsp;In July of 1992 they welcomed a daughter, Sandeana. As years passed, they later divorced.

In 2008, Billy and Susan started dating and later married on May 12, 2018 at Ottawa, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with four boys: &nbsp;Shawn, David, Jason, and Zackhary; and three brothers-in-law, Rick, Steve (and Dena), and Chris (and Clarissa).

Billy has 18 beautiful grandchildren: &nbsp;Cameron, Jordyn, Jolynn, Astrid, Jazzmine, Gavin, Jayden, Dayton, Dakota, Alexa, Kayleen, Jordan, Zayden, James, Jame-Lynn, Kayson, William and Asuna. Plus, there are many nieces and nephews. Billy was a big family man and loved them all. Billy also had three good friends he could count on in Loren, Jody, and Shelly.

Billy had a passion for writing songs, singing, and playing the guitar. He loved entertaining not only his family with his talent but would also go to the nursing homes and share his love for music with the elderly. &nbsp;Billy also enjoyed fishing and was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan. &nbsp;One of his fondest memories is watching the Chiefs game with Sue, Zack, and Dakota and seeing who would cuss and scream the loudest.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings (Ruby, Billie June, Barbara, Wendy, Edward, William, and Roy); son Zackhary and grandchildren Astrid and Jame-Lynn.

Cremation has been chosen. &nbsp;A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date to be announced. &nbsp;

Gina Ann (Ellis) Gugins, age 49 years, of Kinsley, Kansas and formerly of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at Haven, Kansas on Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2023. &nbsp;Gina was born on June 24, 1974 at Great Bend to Gary Ray and Clara May (Roach) Ellis. &nbsp;

She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and then went on to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and worked for a period of time at Cherry Village Long Term Care in Great Bend. &nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Gary L. Gugins on May 22, 2010 at Great Bend. &nbsp;

Gina loved baking cookies and candy, enjoyed surfing the Internet, and loved watching her purple martin birds outside her home. She also dearly loved her three dogs and her cat.

Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Gugins of Kinsley, Kansas; her father, Gary R. Ellis of Great Bend, Kansas; two brothers,&nbsp;Brian and Brent Ellis, both of Great Bend; nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her mother Clara May Ellis on January 1, 2013.

Cremation has been chosen and inurnment will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery near Great Bend, Kansas at a later date. &nbsp;

He was born on September 10, 1935, in Pawnee County to John and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Murphy.

On June 5, 1955 he married Janice LaVonne Ashworth at Macksville, Kansas; she survives. Other survivors include: his children, Steven (Lynda) Murphy, Linda (Rocky) Fox, Jeff (Fay) Murphy, 12 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren with twin great-grandsons to be born soon. He also had many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Lester Murphy, J.D. Murphy, Melvin Murphy, two sisters, Nora Blackburn, and Verna Lea Kirkwood, a son, Mark Murphy, a granddaughter, Kariane Murphy, and a great-grandson, Jerryd Washington.Bob was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned. He was employed at Doerr Metal Products for thirty-seven years, many of those as a foreman. Bob served six years in the Kansas National Guard. Bob had many interests; he enjoyed country music, but his great love was racing. He drove a stock racecar in the 1950s, followed all the NASCAR races, and attended several of them with his good friend, John Carlson.Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023, at the First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Beckwith Mortuary with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery with military graveside rites.Memorials may be given to First Christian Church or Pawnee County Humane Society in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O.
