Gerald G. “Gary” Arnhold – age 86, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born January 30, 1937, in Hays, Kansas to Edgar J. and Beatrice (Karlin) Arnhold. He married Bernadette “Bernie” (Sander) on June 14, 1958, in Victoria, Kansas.

He was a road grader driver for the Ellis county road and bridge department for 14 years and retired in 1999. He worked in construction for 10 years with Allied Construction Company, and lived in Hutchinson for a few years working for Cessna before moving back to Hays in 1969.

Gary grew up in Hays and attended St. Joseph Academy and Hays High School. He worked at L-K Dairy, Cross Manufacturing, and in the oil fields. He was an outdoors person enjoying fishing, hunting, coaching baseball, vegetable and flower gardening, and an avid Chiefs fan. He was a self-taught in many areas and his family always came first.

He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and St. Nicholas of Myra Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree.

His survivors include his wife, Bernie, of the home; his children, Karla Byfield and husband, Martin, of Hays, KS; Kelly Leiker, of Alpharetta, GA; Kristie Arnhold, of Hays;&nbsp;Kurt Arnhold and wife, Lynda, of Hays, KS; his ten grandchildren, Brandon and Blake Byfield; Kaycie Byfield; Aaron and Cheryl Leiker; Shawn Leiker; Jordyn and Blake Irwin; Jason and Meagan Englert; Jared Englert; Scott Englert; Ashley Lang; Adam and Malory Arnhold; and his 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Beatrice; his son-in-law, Ron Leiker; his granddaughter, Sarah Marie Arnhold; his brothers, Leroy Arnhold; Daniel Arnhold; Edgar Arnhold, Jr.; his sisters, Rita Pfannenstiel; and Lorraine Dinges.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays, Kansas with Father Trinity Savariyar officiating. A family rosary will be said at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, at the Church. A private family inurnment will be held later.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

Connie Victoria (Gassmann) Albers, 35, passed away on September 24, 2023 in Oakley, KS. Connie was born on May 23, 1988 to John George Gassmann and Vickie Beth (Wilson) Gassmann in Hoxie, KS. Connie was raised on the family farm and this is where her love of animals began.

Connie graduated from Norton Community High School in 2006. After high school, Connie earned her associate’s degree in vet tech from Colby Community College. 

On February 7, 2015, Connie married Fredrick “Lee” Albers at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Almelo, KS. 

Connie loved her animals Jazzy, Daisy, and Duke. She loved life and found the good in everyone she met.

She is survived by her husband Lee, her parents George and Vickie, brothers Randy (Beth) Gassmann, Jeremy Gassmann, and sister Alice (Matt) Berens, nephews Johnathan (Harley Kester) Gassmann, William (Taylor) Gassmann, Luke James, nieces Maggie James, Elaina Gassmann, Emily James, Abbie Gassmann, Alexis Gassmann, and Hannah James, great-nephew Brantley, great niece Haisley, childhood buddy Nick Austerman, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Connie was preceded in death by her grandparents Conrad and Magdalen (Weber) Gassmann and Victor and Irene (Still) Wilson, and nephew Jakob James.

David Dennis Dreiling was born on June 9, 1949, in Berthoud, Colorado, to Michael and Pauline (Hepp) Dreiling. &nbsp;After battling illness, he passed away peacefully at his home in Phillipsburg, Kansas on September 22, 2023. &nbsp;

Dave attended school in Brighton, Colorado where he earned his high school diploma in 1967. &nbsp;

On April 18, 1969, Dave was united in marriage to Debra Ann Greenrod and the couple celebrated 50 years of marriage together. &nbsp;To this union, two daughters were born, Tracie Ann and Amy Beth. &nbsp;

Dave worked as a truck driver, farmer, and realtor in Colorado before moving to Smith Center, Kansas to begin a new career as a motel owner. &nbsp;He and Debra purchased the Modern Aire Motel in 1984. &nbsp;In 1992, they increased their ownership when they bought and rebuilt The Cottonwood Inn in Phillipsburg, Kansas. &nbsp;Dave always enjoyed visiting with the guests and listening to their travel stories. &nbsp;Dave retired from the motel business in 2018 when the motel was sold.

For as long as anyone can remember, Dave loved hunting and fishing. &nbsp;On his days off of work, he could often be found in a goose pit, walking a field looking for pheasants, or sitting in a boat with a fishing pole in his hand. &nbsp;Dave was the best bird scout around. &nbsp;He spent many hours and miles driving around the countryside looking for birds, to share a scouting report. &nbsp;He enjoyed parking near the hunting spots and using his “Nebraska Fish Finders” to keep an eye on the hunters. &nbsp; A favorite summer pastime was towing the grandkids behind the boat. &nbsp;He took great pleasure in hearing their laughs and screams as they tried their best to hold onto the tube as it was whipping across the wake. &nbsp;

Another joy of Dave’s was watching his grandchildren in all of their varied activities. &nbsp;He could always be found at a music concert, ball games of various sports, school or community play, or watching a parade for that single float. &nbsp;If any one of them were involved, he was there as a proud fan and grandpa!

Dave was a good-hearted man who worked hard, enjoyed life, and cherished his family and friends. &nbsp;He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but his memory will love on in our hearts and minds. &nbsp;

Dave is preceded in death by his wife Debra Ann Dreiling, parents Michael and Pauline Dreiling, and brothers Jerry and James Dreiling.

Survivors include his daughters Tracie Ford and husband Kelly of Phillipsburg, Kansas, and Amy Dreiling and significant other Adam Huenergarde of Plainville, Kansas, sisters Sandi Medina, Mary Kay (Larry) Eversman, brother Michael Dreiling, &nbsp;five grandchildren: Mickalee McCartney, Abagail McCartney, Jordan Ford, Joel Ford, and Jeremy Ford, and numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating.

David Dennis Dreiling

Larry Russell Chestnut was born on May 2, 1947, in Phillipsburg, KS to Roy Chestnut and Norma (Hoover) Chestnut, the second of seven children. He passed away August 24, 2023, at his home in Glade, KS at the age of 76.&nbsp;

Larry grew up on a farm outside of Glade, KS and attended school in Glade and Kirwin KS. Larry loved farming and it would always be a part of his life, whether doing his own or helping others be they family or friends.&nbsp;

On May 27, 1972, he was united in marriage to Shirley Lans in Stamford, NE. They were blessed with four children: Brad, Julie, Ty, and Matthew. They made their home on a farm outside of Glade and raised their family.&nbsp;

Larry wore several working hats in his lifetime: that of a mechanic at Ulrich’s Chevrolet and Tamko in Phillipsburg; a grader operator for Phillips County; a farmer at his farm outside of Glade; a bartender at the Branding Iron in Speed; and a business owner of the Triple C Café in Glade.&nbsp;

He was a lover of country music who not only enjoyed listening to it, but also loved playing it on his guitars and fiddle, especially with his Grandpa Tommy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, first with his kids and then with his grandkids. He loved his family and spent his time recounting stories or just talking about what was going on with the kids or grandkids at that moment.&nbsp;

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Norma Chestnut, brother, Alan Chestnut, and sister, Connie Reese.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Shirley, of the home in Glade; their children, Brad Chestnut and wife Diana of Glade, KS; Julie Hodnett and husband Jim of Elk City, OK; Ty Chestnut and Julia Ghiardi of Glade, KS; Matthew Chestnut and wife Jennifer of Glade, KS; nine grandchildren, Lane, Shelby, Jake, J’Lynn, Lucas, Lexi, Laramee, Claire, and Clayton; brother, Dennis Chestnut; sisters, Joyce Campbell, Joan Russo, and Terri Greer, all of Speed, KS.&nbsp;

Larry R. Chestnut

Allen Scott Cheney, 53, of Rexford, KS died Tuesday, September 26, 2023. He was born July 21, 1970, to John and Phyllis (Dahl) Cheney, in Colby, KS. 

Allen graduated from Golden Plains High School, in Rexford, KS, in 1988. He attended Goodland Vo-Tech and completed the carpentry program. He also received an associate degree from Colby Community College. 

Allen spent several years working as a carpenter and roofing houses. He then started working for Frontier Ag and became the manager at the Rexford elevator. Allen enjoyed his work, maybe a little too much, and made several friends throughout the years. He also served as the Rexford Fire Chief.

 Allen was loyal, funny, honest, and would tell it like it is. He enjoyed tractors, guns, farming, dogs and spending time with his mom. He also liked spoiling his goddaughter, Amanda Cheney. He tolerated hugs from his relatives and his younger cousins called him “Uncle Alf.” Allen was a good man who was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Allen was preceded in death by his dad John Cheney; grandparents, Bill and Blanche Cheney and Jay and Donna Dahl; uncles and aunts, Jay and Nancy Dahl and Barney and Vickie Barnett; cousins, Tommy Korte and Kyler Petersen, as well as numerous other family members and friends. He is survived by his mother Phyllis Cheney; dogs Dexter and Ardie; aunts and uncles, Katie and Mike Petersen and Sondra Dahl; cousins Michael (Nicole) Petersen, Lisa (Tony) Bice, Shawna Petersen, Tina (John) Anderson, Linda (Bob) Dunn, Tim Dahl, Trever (Deanne) Barnett, Matt (Lynn) Cheney and Eric Korte and many other cousins and friends.

Visitation will take place from 4-6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2023, at the Rexford Community Church, Rexford, with burial in the Rexford Cemetery.

 </figure>July 21, 1970 - September 26, 2023Allen Scott Cheney, 53, of Rexford, KS died Tuesday, September 26, 2023. He was born July 21, 1970, to John and Phyllis (Dahl) Cheney, in Colby, KS. Allen graduated from Golden Plains High School, in Rexford, KS, in 1988. He attended Goodland Vo-Tech and completed the carpentry program. He also received an associate degree from Colby Community College. Allen spent several years working as a carpenter and roofing houses. He then started working for Frontier Ag and became the manager at the Rexford elevator. Allen enjoyed his work, maybe a little too much, and made several friends throughout the years. He also served as the Rexford Fire Chief. Allen was loyal, funny, honest, and would tell it like it is. He enjoyed tractors, guns, farming, dogs and spending time with his mom. He also liked spoiling his goddaughter, Amanda Cheney. He tolerated hugs from his relatives and his younger cousins called him “Uncle Alf.” Allen was a good man who was loved by many and will be greatly missed.Allen was preceded in death by his dad John Cheney; grandparents, Bill and Blanche Cheney and Jay and Donna Dahl; uncles and aunts, Jay and Nancy Dahl and Barney and Vickie Barnett; cousins, Tommy Korte and Kyler Petersen, as well as numerous other family members and friends. Sheryl Jean Neeland, 66, passed away September 29, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend campus. She was born August 12, 1957, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Dale and Ella (Koch) Hartig. 

On July 28, 1990, Sheryl was united in marriage to Craig Neeland in Ellinwood, Kansas.&nbsp;

Sheryl grew up in rural Ellinwood, Kansas, graduating from Ellinwood High School in 1975. She received her associate’s in nursing from Barton Community College and continued her education at Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s in education degree in 1983. From there, Sheryl received her master’s in counseling degree in 1993.&nbsp;

Sheryl loved to spend time with her children, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, as well as her grandchildren. She touched the lives of many children in Great Bend. She was a kindergarten teacher and school nurse at Riley Elementary, a guidance counselor at Jefferson Elementary and Park Elementary and then at the Great Bend Middle School. She worked for the Great Bend USD 428 District for a total of 38 years. She was instrumental in developing Reality U at the middle school. 

Sheryl was active in many local volunteer organizations including United Way of Central Kansas and Memories Matter Camp. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Craig Neeland of the home; two children, Sarah Trujillo and husband Tyler of Hugoton and Adam Neeland and wife Alex of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Madden and Ella Trujillo, with a grandbaby Trujillo to arrive in December; one brother, JR Hartig (Bernie) of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Carol Byrd (Eugene) of Birmingham, Alabama; and many nephews and nieces. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; Dale and Ella Hartig; and father-in-law, Paul Neeland

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 2, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m. and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Lifelong Phillips County resident, Gregory A. Babcock passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS at the age of 67.

He was born March 23, 1956 in Phillipsburg, KS, the son of Donald and Gloria (Bushnell) Babcock.

Greg was united in marriage to Kim Newlin on July 22, 1978 in Phillipsburg, KS. &nbsp;She survives.

Other survivors include his children: son Grant Babcock and wife Megan of Littleton, CO, and daughters Megan Irvine and husband Brian of Littleton, CO and Melissa DeWitt and husband Randy of Manhattan, KS; seven grandchildren; his father Don Babcock of Phillipsburg; and a sister, Donita Pemberton and husband Jim of Russell, KS.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother Gloria and a brother, Gordon.

Cremation was planned. &nbsp;A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Huck Boyd Community Center, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Tony Keesee and Lew VanDerWege officiating. &nbsp;The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Myron Gene Rein, age 60, died at his home September 23, 2023. &nbsp;He was born April 3, 1963 in Ness City, the son of Cletus and JoAnn (Dreasher) Rein.

After graduating from Bazine High School in 1981. Myron worked most of his life in the oil field around Ness County. &nbsp;He loved sports, especially KU basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He is survived by three brothers, Dale of Wichita, Joel (Deneise) of Hutchinson, Alan of Bazine and three sisters, Cindy Rein of Wichita, Patty Legleiter (Neil) of Hays, Julie Roane of WaKeeney and sister-in-law Vonia Rein of Cimarron; also many nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Daryl, Brad and sister Paula.

Valery 'Val' N. Schumacher, Victoria&nbsp;

Valery N. “Val” Schumacher, age 66, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Victoria, Kansas. He was born May 13, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, and was adopted by Norman J. and Yvonne M. (Feltis) Schumacher when he was eight months old. 

Val lived in Elkhart, Kansas and Gretna, Louisiana before the family moved to Victoria in 1973. He was a 1975 graduate of Victoria High School, and a member of Basilica of St. Fidelis. He worked as a certified nursing assistant at St. John's Nursing home in Victoria and St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays prior to returning to Louisiana where he worked in the hospitality field. 

He moved to Arizona in 1985 where he owned and operated a flower shop and also worked in home healthcare. He returned to Victoria in 2006 where he lived with and helped care for his parents before their passing. Most recently Val was a Senior Companion for over eight years. He loved this job because it allowed him to do the things he loved best, caring for and entertaining others. Val enjoyed playing cards, working on large print word search puzzles, and visiting friends and family. 

Val’s survivors include his sister, Vicki Schmidtberger, Santa Clarita, California; his nieces and nephews, Norman Schmidtberger and wife, Heather Kaplan; Kathryn Schmidtberger and fiancé, Keith Roberts; and Beth Fischer, all of California; Glenn Schmidtberger, Jr., of Taiwan; his aunts, Jeanette Younger, Victoria, KS; and Rosetta Feltis, Denver, CO; his cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Yvonne. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. Victoria, Kansas with Father James Moster O.F.M. Cap. Valery 'Val' N. Schumacher

Fr. Gervase Degenhardt,&nbsp;Pittsburgh, PA

Fr. Gervase Degenhardt, OFM Cap., died at St. Augustine Friary in Pittsburgh, PA, on September 27, 2023. He was 91.

One of eight children born to Martin and Pauline (Leiker) Degenhardt, he was born in Antonino, KS, on December 28, 1931. At his baptism he was given the name Francis.

He attended St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Hays, KS, and in 1946 began his secondary education at St. Fidelis Seminary in Herman, PA.

On July 13, 1952, he received the Capuchin habit and was given the name Gervase. One year later he professed his first vows as a Capuchin friar. After graduating from St. Fidelis College Seminary in 1955, he began theological studies at Capuchin College in Washington, DC.

Fr. Gervase was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 1958. After his ordination he pursued further studies at the Catholic University of America, earning an STL in theology in 1960. Subsequently he taught theology at Capuchin College until 1965.

He then returned to St. Fidelis Seminary in Herman, PA, as a professor of theology and vice president of the college. At the same time he attended classes at Carnegie Mellon University, obtaining a master’s degree in English literature in 1968. For the next eleven years he taught courses in theology and English.

In 1979 he received his first assignment in a parish. Fr. Gervase was named parochial vicar of St. Joseph Parish in York, PA.

At the 1986 Provincial Chapter Fr. Gervase was elected Vicar Provincial Minister. He also served as the Secretary of Personnel and Ministries and the Director of Retirement. After his service to the Province, Fr. Gervase was appointed guardian of St. Augustine Friary in Pittsburgh, a post he held for three years.

After a brief sabbatical and taking courses in theology at Duquesne University, Fr. Gervase returned to parish ministry, serving as parochial vicar at St. Augustine Parish. He also was a member of the Clergy Council of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

In 2002 he was appointed chaplain of the Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale at the Mt. Alvernia Convent. Fr. Gervase was loved by the Sisters and served as their chaplain for fifteen years.

At his request Fr. Gervase relinquished daily pastoral responsibilities at Mt. Alvernia in 2017, becoming a confessor for the Sisters until his retirement at age 87.

Fr. Gervase was a faithful and good friar, zealous priest and devoted chaplain.

He loved the fine arts. Until his final months of life he was able to recite from memory lengthy passages from Shakespeare. He was passionate about literature and classical music.

Fr. Gervase was also a cultivator of Heritage roses and served as an officer and judge of the Pittsburgh Rose Society. He was an American Rose Society certified rosarian consultant. A deep red, miniature rose is named for him, The Fr. Gervase Rose.

Fr. Gervase loved his family and stayed in close contact with them, often taking vacations with them.

Among the friars he will be remembered as a fun-loving friar who also spoke his mind without hesitation. He loved being a Capuchin friar.

Fr. Gervase was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Martin and sisters Viola Sack, Dolores Herrman, and Esther Burghardt. He leaves to mourn his passing three sisters: Verna Schumacher and Joyce Pfeifer of Hays, KS, and Veronica Ditto of Everman, TX, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, 02 October 2023, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a wake service in St. Margaret of Cortona Chapel, St. Augustine Friary, 221 36th Street, Pittsburgh, PA. Visitation Tuesday, 03 October, 10 a.m.; Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m..

Interment will immediately follow at St. Augustine Cemetery, Friars’ Plot, Pittsburgh, PA.

Gervase was also a cultivator of Heritage roses and served as an officer and judge of the Pittsburgh Rose Society. He was an American Rose Society certified rosarian consultant. A deep red, miniature rose is named for him, The Fr. Gervase Rose.Fr. Gervase loved his family and stayed in close contact with them, often taking vacations with them.Among the friars he will be remembered as a fun-loving friar who also spoke his mind without hesitation. He loved being a Capuchin friar.Fr. Gervase was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Martin and sisters Viola Sack, Dolores Herrman, and Esther Burghardt. George Howard Fenley, 91, passed away on September 23, 2023 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on January 18, 1932 in Alamota, Kansas the son of George and Clara (Ramseier) Fenley.

Howard was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. He was a United States Army Veteran serving stateside during the Korean War. 

He married Josephine "Peggy" Moore on August 8, 1954, in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Josephine "Peggy" Fenley of Dighton; son, Tracy (Tonya) Fenley of Ness City; granddaughters, Caitlin Smee and Jordyn Fenley; and brother-in-law, Jim Churchwell. 

 He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Fenley; and sisters, Norma Kuhn and Bonnie Churchwell.

Lifelong Goodland, Kansas resident, Emma Ella (Everett) Van Vleet, 88, died Friday, September 22, 2023, in Goodland at Topside Manor.

She was born on January 19, 1935, in the upstairs bedroom of her grandparents’ house at 531 W. 10th, Goodland, Kansas where her parents also lived. She was the daughter of Roy and Julia P (Smalley) Everett.

She attended school and graduated from Sherman Community High in 1953.

On July 8, 1955 she married Harold L. Van Vleet and they made their home in Goodland. She was a stay-at home mom until September 1969 when she went to work for the School District as a lunch room cook. In May 1992, after cooking for 22 years, she retired to spend time with Harold who was also retired by then.

She was a life-long member of the First Christian Church, being active in youth programs during her school years and teaching kindergarten Sunday school for many years. Attending summer camp at Camp Christy near Scott County Lake was one of her special memories. She was a member of Royal Neighbors, Daughters of Rebekah, and the VWF Auxiliary. She was active with the Senior Center from 1995 until her death.

Preceding her in death are her husband and parents, sister Nellie Bowman, son-in-law Mark K. Brunworth, granddaughter Julia Van Vleet; brothers-in-law, Malcolm Van Vleet, Richard Van Vleet, Ronald Van Vleet, Merlyn Blue, Otho Welcher and Kenneth Smith, and sisters-in-law Patsy Van Vleet, Julie Van Vleet, Marjorie Van Vleet and Wilma Blue.

Stanley Billings, son of Guy and Neva (Larson) Billings was born April 1, 1935 at his family home in rural Kensington, KS, and passed away September 25, 2023 at the age of 88.

Stan attended country school through 6th grade. He continued his education at Kensington where he graduated from high school in 1953. He attended one year at Kansas State University and returned home to work on the family farm.

On August 12, 1956, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Gemaehlich at St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, KS. To this union four children were born: Debra, Linda, Greg and Sheila. They made their home 11.5 miles northwest of Kensington where they raised their family and lived for 64 years before moving to Kensington in 2020.

As a young boy he learned about farming from his grandpa Ed and his dad. After college, he worked with his Dad, Guy, faithfully tending to the land and livestock. Stan’s son and grandsons now carry on the family farm legacy of 6 generations. Stan’s work ethic is something that he took pride in and passed on to his children.

Stan had a quiet, humble personality and strong faith. Stan and Carolyn were members of St. John Lutheran Church. He loved spending time with family and enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Kensington; children Debbie (Ed) Murdoch of Hendersonville, NC, Linda (Leonard) Robinson of Smith Center, KS, Greg (Robin) Billings of Kensington ,KS, Sheila (Ron) Jansonius of Oberlin, KS; grandchildren Eric (Alisabeth) Robinson, Tyrel (Randi) Billings, Ian (Natalie) Murdoch, Josh (Jessica) Billings, Ariel Robinson, Morgan Jansonius, Molly Jansonius, Nolan (Katelyn) Billings, Kendra Billilngs; and six great-grandchildren, Oliver and Damien Murdoch, Avila and Ivry Billings, Koy Billings, Landon Robinson; siblings Rod (Judy) Billings, David (Rusty) Billings, Joan (Steve) Heide, Dan (Jeanne) Billings; brother-in-law Ken Ratliff; along with many other family and friends.

Marvel Schaadt, age 97, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at the Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS.

Marvel LeVeta Hurlburt Cameron Schaadt was born to Jerry and Vesta (Roach) Hurlburt March 2, 1926 and went to be with her Lord September 24, 2023. Her first name was established by the first words her mother said at her birth, "Oh what a marvel," as they had hoped for a child for so long. As an only child, she was overwhelmed with joy to get an adopted brother in 1934, Neil Hurlburt. This completed the family she and her parents had so longed for.

On May 14, 1944 Marvel married Donald Cameron and to this union three sons were born, Jerrilyn, Rodney and Kyle.

Marvel was a devoted wife, mother, home maker and farm wife. Later in life they divorced and Marvel remarried a long time friend Carl Schaadt. They divided their time living between two homes, one in Kansas and in Ohio. This union combined two families for her to love and be thankful for. 

Most of all she never lost focus of her strong faith in and devotion to her Lord and savior. She gave many hours to serving her church family in any way she could, as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school sponsor, or in any capacity she could. Marvel never put herself ahead of others.

Marvel was preceded in death by her parents, brother Neil and husband Carl and one stepdaughter.

Survivors include Jerrilyn and BJ Cameron of Hays, Rodney and Sandy Cameron, Kyle Cameron and special friend Kelli, all of Portis, KS; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren and families in Ohio and two stepgrandchildren and families in Hays and Ellis, KS.

Marvel touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all.

Marvel Schaadt

Shirley May Hutton, of Oakley, Kansas, died on September 22, 2023, at Logan County Senior Living. She was born May 23, 1936, in rural Yuma County, Colorado to Harley and Lorena (Bowden) Salvador.

Shirley graduated in 1954 and went to work at Farmers State Bank in Yuma, Colorado. 

In September of 1960, she married the love of her life, Derrell Hutton. In 1961, they moved to Seattle, WA, where Derrell was stationed at Fort Lewis, and their son Don was born. When Derrell was deployed to Korea, the family moved back to Colorado, where Shelly was born in 1962. Upon his return from the service, Derrell took a job in Goodland, KS and then Hoxie, KS, where their youngest son Dan was born in 1965. Finally, in 1972, the family moved to Oakley, KS, where they remained. 

Shirley became the Executive Director of Housing Urban Development, where she worked for 16 years.

She is survived by her three children, Donald Hutton of Colby, KS, Shelly and Chuck Eberle of Hoxie, KS, and Daniel and Terri Hutton of Scott City, KS; grandchildren Tyler Eberle, Stephanie (Ethan) Bretz, Danielle (Nathan) York, Briana (Colin) Williams, Grace Hutton, and Callie Hutton; great-grandchildren Ellie and Kenna Bretz, Charlotte York and Ivy Hutton-Venegas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Derrell Hutton, parents Harley and Lorena, and brother Marvin Salvador.

Visitation will be Wednesday September 27, 2023, 5-7 p.m. at Oakley United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be September 28, 2023, 10:30 a.m. at Oakley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Oakley City Cemetery.

She was born May 23, 1936, in rural Yuma County, Colorado to Harley and Lorena (Bowden) Salvador.Shirley graduated in 1954 and went to work at Farmers State Bank in Yuma, Colorado. In September of 1960, she married the love of her life, Derrell Hutton. In 1961, they moved to Seattle, WA, where Derrell was stationed at Fort Lewis, and their son Don was born. When Derrell was deployed to Korea, the family moved back to Colorado, where Shelly was born in 1962. Upon his return from the service, Derrell took a job in Goodland, KS and then Hoxie, KS, where their youngest son Dan was born in 1965. Finally, in 1972, the family moved to Oakley, KS, where they remained. Shirley became the Executive Director of Housing Urban Development, where she worked for 16 years.She is survived by her three children, Donald Hutton of Colby, KS, Shelly and Chuck Eberle of Hoxie, KS, and Daniel and Terri Hutton of Scott City, KS; grandchildren Tyler Eberle, Stephanie (Ethan) Bretz, Danielle (Nathan) York, Briana (Colin) Williams, Grace Hutton, and Callie Hutton; great-grandchildren Ellie and Kenna Bretz, Charlotte York and Ivy Hutton-Venegas.She was preceded in death by her husband Derrell Hutton, parents Harley and Lorena, and brother Marvin Salvador.Visitation will be Wednesday September 27, 2023, 5-7 p.m. at Oakley United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be September 28, 2023, 10:30 a.m. at Oakley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Oakley City Cemetery. Edgar Leslie “Ed” Sandritter, 89, died September 26, 2023, at his home in Hoisington. He was born July 1, 1934, in Arma, Kansas, the son of Edgar H. and Edna Faye (Scott) Sandritter. &nbsp;

Ed graduated from Crawford County High School and attended college at Labette County Community College in Parsons, Kansas, where he played baseball. In 1956 he enlisted in the military serving as a Spec 3 with the United States Army.

On June 3, 1960, he married Judy L. Sutton, in Miami, Oklahoma. To this union was blessed a son, David and daughter, Jill. 

Always a hard worker, Ed worked for Schneider Construction and later Marlette Mobile Homes. In 1981 he became the director of buildings and grounds for Hoisington USD 431, retiring in 1999. 

They raised their family in Hoisington, where Ed was active in the children’s sports, coaching little league and serving as the Little League president. He loved all sports: basketball, football, track, tennis and would travel to watch and cheer whether it was high school, collegiate teams, K-State, KU, or Pittsburg State. He loved cheering for them all, especially if family was involved. He also loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

Upon retirement Ed and Judy enjoyed traveling and Ed took up golfing, enjoying those times spent with his friends.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Judy Sandritter of the home; son, David Sandritter and wife Sue of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Jill Sinclair and husband Matthew of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter, Mallory Sinclair Ross and husband Daniel of Fort Collins, Colorado; a sister, Sharon Evans and husband Ed of Frontenac, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews: Frank Naccarato (Mary), Kathie Emerson, Karen Pace, Michael Evans (Letha), Matthew Evans (Amy), Brian Sutton (Marilyn), Angela Watson (Rob), Jason Sutton (Celestine), and Diane Zoeller (Eric).
