Aylin Esmeralda Olivas Ortega, a vibrant soul who brought joy to everyone around her, departed this world on July 25, 2023 at HaysMed, at the tender age of 21. She was born on January 22, 2002 in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of loving parents, Angel Olivas and Yadira Olivas Ortega.

In addition to Aylin's many accomplishments and the love she shared, her life was marked by incredible courage and strength. For 13 years of her 21-year journey, she bravely battled glioblastoma brain cancer, demonstrating unwavering resilience in the face of adversity. In her short time on earth, Aylin achieved great achievements and touched the lives of many.

In 2020, she graduated from TMP-Marian High School and then NCK Tech, where she earned a degree as a CNA. Her compassion and dedication to caring for others led her to become a certified nursing assistant at Via Christi in Hays and HaysMed, where her warmth and kindness had a lasting impact on patients and colleagues alike.

Aylin's dedication to her community and faith was commendable. During her time at TMP-Marian, she participated in volleyball, demonstrating her athleticism and team spirit. In addition, she was an active member of the IHMC Church, where she served as an altar girl and lector.

Beyond her professional and academic achievements, Aylin had a passion and found joy in singing and dancing. Her vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm uplifted those around her and created lasting memories for all the lucky ones who shared those moments.

Aylin's capacity for friendship knew no bounds, and she was a true confidant and companion to all who crossed her path. Her genuine kindness and ability to connect with others will be treasured and missed by countless friends and acquaintances.

Aylin is survived by her parents, Angel and Yadira, and her siblings, Julian, Josue, Ruben, Isabella, Angel and Anna Cecilia, all from Hays. She also leaves behind numerous extended family members and friends who will always keep his memory close to their hearts.

While her life may have been cut short by this unrelenting disease, Aylin's legacy of courage will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. Their bravery in the face of such a difficult battle will always serve as an inspiration to us all. Aylin's loss leaves an indescribable void in the lives of those she touched. SCOTT CITY - Connie Leigh MacDonnell, age 67, passed away in her home, her son and his wife, her granddaughter Alexis, her best friend Jayne, and her beloved dog Biscuit by her side on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. &nbsp;She was born September 27, 1955, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Keith and Betty McCarty, a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1976,moving from Colorado Springs, Colorado.&nbsp;

Connie was a personal legal assistant for J.D. Muench Chartered, owned her own secretarial and accounting business, worked in advertising sales for multiple radio stations, was the Chamber of Commerce Assistant Director for the Scott City Chamber of Commerce, and was managing Z Bottling at the time of her death.&nbsp;

On July 23, 1977, she married the love of her life, Todd M. MacDonnell in Scott City, Kansas at the Community Christian Church. He passed away on March 7, 2016, in Wichita, Kansas.

Connie attended Kirkwood Community College studying business management and took a variety of continued education classes over the years to expand her knowledge.

Connie was a thoughtful, loving, and kind-hearted woman who would do anything for anybody. She loved spending time with her close-knit group of girls which over the years included playing cards, bowling, the birthday club, and many holiday occasions with all their families together. Connie enjoyed spoiling her pets over the years and will always be remembered as the best nana ever.

Connie had an unconditional love for her family which includes her son Travis (Liz) MacDonnell of Marienthal, Kansas, daughter Amber MacDonnell of Colorado Springs, Colorado, two sisters Tracy McCarty (Larre Osterkamp) of Anamosa, Iowa, and Kristy McCarty (Gary Parmenter) of Ozark, Missouri, sister-in-law Deb McCarty of Ozark, Missouri, five grandchildren Alexis Long, Zach Kissick, Haylee Kissick, Kade Kingston, and Kiera Whatley, and one great-grandson Tyndale Kaeb.

She was preceded in death by her husband Todd, her brother Greg McCarty, her parents Keith and Betty McCarty, her mother and father-in-law Tom and Jo MacDonnell, her brother-in-law Richard MacDonnell, and numerous pets.

Connie will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those who knew her but her strong faith in the Lord is reassuring of her eternal life.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Scott Wagner presiding.

LARNED - Richard Braun, 72, passed away July 13, 2023 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born December 6, 1950 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Andrew E. and Matilda Dreher Braun. &nbsp;A longtime area resident, he was an oil field pumper.

He enjoyed farming with his father, and model cars. &nbsp;He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1751 in Victoria and a member of the American Legion Post #173 in Hays.

Survivors include a son, Justin Braun; two brothers, James L. (Sharon) Braun, New Albany, Indiana and Andrew M. (Belinda) Braun, Victoria; a sister, Patricia Ann Baalman, Grinnell; and two grandsons Jace Braun and Jakob Braun.

Memorial graveside service with military honors will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas, with Pastor Jarred Smith presiding.&nbsp;

Dennis Vernon Klima, age 71, was welcomed by his Lord and Savior, on July 25, 2023, after a work related accident. He was born September 9, 1951, in Sterling, Kansas. He was the first born to Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima. 

He grew up in Claflin, Kansas and graduated from Claflin High School in 1970.&nbsp;

Dennis married his sweetheart, Rhonda Clinkscales, on August 1, 1976, in Holyrood, Kansas, in the presence of their family at the residence of a friend. To their union, they welcomed a son, David Klima, daughter, Laura Klima-Fehr, and their youngest son, Jordan Klima.

Dennis and his wife, Rhonda, have lived in Great Bend since 1999. 

Dennis was an active member of Grace Community Church, and was a known as a man of godly character amongst his friends, community members, and those who worked with him in the oil patch. His faith meant everything thing to him, and those around him could always expect to hear a Bible verse or word of encouragement from Dennis. He enjoyed attending Adult Bible Fellowship and weekly men’s prayer meetings. His family knew that they could find him up early reading his Bible or on his knees in prayer before going to work for the day.&nbsp;

Dennis worked in the oil industry for over 46 years, owning Klima Well Service for over 42 years. He was known amongst his peers for his knowledge of the business and his hard work ethic. The dedication to his business was a character trait that all of his children also possess and they take pride in carrying on the legacy of hard work their father displayed.

Dennis was a loving husband and proud father and grandfather, who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. They will remember his servant-heart, silly nicknames, and love of Hallmark movies.&nbsp;

Klima was survived by his wife, Rhonda (Clinkscales) Klima, children David (Misty) of Boise, Idaho, Laura (Matt) of Kansas City, Kansas, and Jordan (Natalie) of Hays, Kansas; grandchildren Macey, Micah, Maxson, and Mavery; and siblings, Donna Briggeman, Gary Klima, Vera Blair, Sherry Simpson, Ernest Klima, and Jim Klima. 

Dennis was proceeded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive guests from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Grace Community Church, with Pastor Jay Beuoy presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery North.

Floyd Charles Tuzicka, 85, of Russell, Kansas, and formerly of Hoisington and Olmitz, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, July 24, 2023 at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Floyd was born April 25, 1938 in rural Olmitz.&nbsp; He was the son of Charles George and Barbara Janice (Dome) Tuzicka.&nbsp; 

He grew up in Hoisington and attended Hoisington schools.

Floyd served his country in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; He was stationed in Beirut and Lebanon.&nbsp; After his tour was done, he returned to the Olmitz area.

Floyd was united in marriage to Clara Constance “Connie” Hewitt on November 17, 1963 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.&nbsp; They made their home in Olmitz.&nbsp; They moved to the Russell area the last couple of years.

Floyd worked for Red Tiger in the oilfields.&nbsp; 

He was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell.&nbsp; He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.&nbsp; 

He was past commander of the VFW Post in Hoisington and later joined the VFW Post 6240 in Russell.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting, fishing and gardening.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 59 years, Connie, of the home.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Orville Tuzicka.

Celebration of the funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell.&nbsp; Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, at the St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Olmitz, where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.&nbsp; Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the mortuary.&nbsp;

Helen Irene Zimmerman, age 102, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023, in Lakewood, Colorado,

She was born in Russell, Kansas, May 4, 1921 to Adam Fose and Kathrine Schneider.

 She worked as clerk and bookkeeper for several businesses in Russell and was Worthy Matron of Eastern Star.

Helen married Dean Zimmerman June 6, 1939. They were married for 68 years. Dean and Helen ran the Sky-Vu Drive In theatre in Russell for 32 years.

She was preceded in death by husband, Dean, daughter, Gwen Writer and son, Fred Zimmerman.

Helen is survived by daughter, Mitzi (Leo) Stambaugh of Denver, four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A private family burial will take place at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.

DODGE CITY – Martha Strecker, 82, died Friday, July 21, 2023 at The Willow House in Hays. She was born January 9, 1941 at Spearville, the daughter of Charles Christopher and Elizabeth Mary (Schawe) Ackerman.

 She was a graduate of Windthorst High School and a lifetime area resident. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Altar Society as well as a longtime volunteer at Manor of the Plains all in Dodge City. She enjoyed word find puzzles, playing golf, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

On May 26, 1962 she married Richard Strecker at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Windthorst. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2020.

Survivors include two sons, Dave and wife Roni, Minneola and Steve and wife Janna, Garden City; two daughters, Jan Stauth and husband Shannon, Hays and Karen Moeder and husband Scot, Great Bend; two sisters, Cathy Brungardt and Alice Craig, brothers and sisters-in-law, Sandy Ackerman, Bob Schneweis, Sharon Strecker, Jerry and Judy Strecker, Cathy Strecker, Vern Strecker, Maurice and Kathy Strecker, Norbert Strecker, Joe and Linda Strecker, John and Mert Strecker, and Mark and Jackie Strecker; 11 grandchildren, Michaela (Kaden) Strecker, Brenna Strecker, Andrew (Shannon) Burkhart, Tanner (Katie) Burkhart, Taryn Stauth, Braden Stauth, Cody (Kristie) Strecker, Ryan (Madison) Strecker, Megan (Steven) Crain, Joseph Moeder, and Mathew Moeder, and eight great-grandchildren.

She married Alvin Muth on August 8, 1954 in Kinsley.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend resident, Vera worked in the kitchen at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Great Bend for 29 years and previously had worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she was awarded a gold pen with two blue pearls for not missing a day of work in two years. 

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Eagles Club, and Sunflower Polka Club. Vera enjoyed dancing, painting, playing cards and slot machines.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Muth of the home; a daughter, Denise Appel and husband Rich of Rush Center; a son, Darren Muth and wife Ruth of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. &nbsp;

Vera Darlene Muth

LuJuana C. “Lu” Baker, 83, died Monday, July 24, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born December 16, 1939, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Leland Clarence “Hap” and Leila Louise (Wade) Geist. Lu grew up as a child in Scott City where she attended Scott City schools. She later lived in Glade, Kansas for a short period of time, before moving to Garden City.

On May 18, 1973, she married Robert “Bob” Baker in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Deerfield, Kansas. In 1980, they moved to Garden City before leaving for El Dorado, Kansas in 1983. After a short stay in El Dorado, they moved back to Garden City where they have lived since. 

Lu began her working career at Western State Bank. She then worked for many years at Garden National Bank/Bank of America until her retirement in the late 1980s. 

Lu was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, and she loved spending her time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Robert “Bob” Baker of the home; four children Cindy Shields of Garden City, Kansas, Billie Ann Cassilass of Phoenix, Arizona, Bart Baker of Dodge City, Kansas, and Becky Moulden of Monument, Colorado; two brothers Frank Geist of Wichita, Kansas and Steve Geist of Moore, Oklahoma; three sisters Cheryl Keyes of Scott City, Kansas, Vicky Wheeler of Amarillo, Texas, and Linda Foster of Ness City, Kansas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lu is preceded in death by her parents; two sons Jim Shields and Terry Shields; a daughter Kathy Prentice; seven brothers Bob, Larry, Gene, Randall, Don, Mike, &amp; Jack; and four sisters Juanita, Marie, Sheila, and Jane. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, with Rev. John Harms and Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.  </figure>LuJuana C. “Lu” Baker, 83, died Monday, July 24, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born December 16, 1939, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Leland Clarence “Hap” and Leila Louise (Wade) Geist. Lu grew up as a child in Scott City where she attended Scott City schools. She later lived in Glade, Kansas for a short period of time, before moving to Garden City. On May 18, 1973, she married Robert “Bob” Baker in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Deerfield, Kansas. In 1980, they moved to Garden City before leaving for El Dorado, Kansas in 1983. After a short stay in El Dorado, they moved back to Garden City where they have lived since. Lu began her working career at Western State Bank. She then worked for many years at Garden National Bank/Bank of America until her retirement in the late 1980s. Lu was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, and she loved spending her time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Robert “Bob” Baker of the home; four children Cindy Shields of Garden City, Kansas, Billie Ann Cassilass of Phoenix, Arizona, Bart Baker of Dodge City, Kansas, and Becky Moulden of Monument, Colorado; two brothers Frank Geist of Wichita, Kansas and Steve Geist of Moore, Oklahoma; three sisters Cheryl Keyes of Scott City, Kansas, Vicky Wheeler of Amarillo, Texas, and Linda Foster of Ness City, Kansas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lu is preceded in death by her parents; two sons Jim Shields and Terry Shields; a daughter Kathy Prentice; seven brothers Bob, Larry, Gene, Randall, Don, Mike, &amp; Jack; and four sisters Juanita, Marie, Sheila, and Jane. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, with Rev. John Harms and Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in garden City. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. She was born August 16, 1958 in Hays, the daughter of Bal and Helen (Pfannenstiel) Younger.&nbsp; 

Barbara graduated from Hays High School and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She began her career as a med aide at Locust Grove Village and worked in various assisted living and nursing homes.&nbsp; She enjoyed word searches and watching westerns on TV.&nbsp; Barbara was loving, caring, and especially loved her dogs and her family.

Survivors include three brothers, David Younger and wife Donna of Hays, Donald Younger and wife Kathy of Salina, Tony Younger of La Crosse, a sister-in-law, Cherri Younger of Ellis, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert James and Dennis George Younger.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Grace Mary Nimz and Abigail Jessie Nimz were stillborn on July 21st in Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. They are the daughters of Brandon William and Tella Rebecca Nimz of Hays.

Grace passed away a few days prior surrounded by her family, who was blessed to be able to be with her in the moments that she crossed. Sometime within the following two days, her sister, Abigail Jessie Nimz also passed away.

Survivors include their mother, Tella Rebecca Nimz, their father, Brandon William Nimz, and their brother, Simon William Nimz, all of the home; their grandparents, Mark and Joleen Nimz, of WaKeeney, KS; and Bruce and Joyce Whitaker of Lakeland, FL; and their great-grandmother, Frances Nimz, of WaKeeney, KS.

Elsie June (Keller) Wolf passed away July 13, 2023 at the age of 79 in Plainville, Kansas. She was born February 5, 1944 in Colby, Kansas to Alex and Marion (Donovan) Keller. 

She was raised on the family farm south of Monument, Kansas, and attended school in Monument and Grinnell, Kansas. 

She was united in marriage May 23, 1961 to the love of her life James R. Wolf. To this union three sons were born.

The family moved to Norton County, near New Almelo in 1971. They purchased a farm and ran a dairy until 1991. She loved spending time with family, friends and neighbors. Memories were made in abundance on the farm and shared by many. She never tired of the farm life. and was very proud to have raised her family on the farm.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband James Richard Wolf and and infant daughter Kimberly; her parents, Alex and Marion Keller; sisters Kathryn and Twila Ann; brother-in-law Dale McKellips; her in-laws Fred and Mary Wolf; sisters-in-law Mary Jean Overton (Alan), and Marlene Wolf (Melvin); and brothers-in-law Leon Wolf and Jerry Kaiser (Luetta).

She is survived by her three sons David A. (Casey) of Clayton, James F. (Renae) of Pierre, South Dakota, and Stacey M. Casey D. Richardson, 38, died Tuesday July 18, 2023 at his home in Lakin, Kansas. He was born February 9, 1985 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of Kirk and Linda (Bosak) Richardson. Casey’s family relocated to Lakin when he was a young child and remained here.

Casey attended local schools and graduated from Lakin High School before going on to Fort Hays State University. He obtained his business degree at FHSU and moved to Denver, Colorado where he made his career as a loan officer. 

During the pandemic he relocated back home to Lakin. Casey was easy going and someone people were drawn too. He could talk to anyone.&nbsp;He enjoyed fishing, hiking and camping. He is survived by his parents Kirk and Linda Richardson of Lakin, Kansas; sister Keri (Nick) Hansen of Lakin, Kansas; brother Bo (Courtney) Richardson of Aurora, Colorado; five nieces and nephews, and his grandmother Stephanie Bosak of Cheyenne, Wyoming. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Betty Ann (Balloun) Boxberger, 90, of Russell, Kansas, passed peacefully Sunday, July 23, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, with her family by her side.

Betty was born on March 1, 1933, in Russell.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Rudolph George and Mabelle (Britt) Balloun.&nbsp; She spent the first year of her life in Gorham, Kansas.&nbsp; Thereafter, her family moved to Russell.&nbsp; 

Betty was baptized in Trinity United Methodist Church.&nbsp; 

She grew up and attended schools in Russell; graduating from Russell High School in 1951.&nbsp; Betty then attended and graduated from Central Business College in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; She went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver.&nbsp; Betty returned to Russell in December 1953.&nbsp; 

In March 1954, she met and fell in love with Dean H. Boxberger.&nbsp; After a seven-week courtship, they were united in marriage on May 16, 1954, in St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; From this union, they were blessed with five sons, Matthew, Mark, Thomas, Timothy and Scott.&nbsp; 

Betty joined and was confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp;

 While their sons were growing up, Betty chose to be a stay-at-home Mom.&nbsp; She enjoyed being the room mother, cub scout den mother, 4-H Leader, and volunteering in any activity that her family was involved with.&nbsp; 

Throughout her life she did secretarial work for the Bureau of Reclamation; Sohio Oil company; Harold McCombs, Attorney; Ostrum &amp; Balloun, Attorneys; St. John Lutheran Church; Russell High School; State Farm Insurance; and Russell County Extension Office.&nbsp; She also worked many years for USD 407 as a special education paraprofessional.&nbsp; 

Betty loved music and played the piano during many of her younger years.&nbsp; 

She loved God and was strong in her faith.&nbsp; She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild, in the Sunday School, Prayer Shawl Ministry, member of Martha Circle, and several other volunteer jobs in her church and community.&nbsp; 

She was treasurer for the Russell Roughriders and treasurer and board member of the Russell County Food Pantry.&nbsp; She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and VFW Ladies Auxiliary.&nbsp; 

Her greatest joy was her family.&nbsp; Betty and Dean shared 69 years of marriage.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and traveling with her family.&nbsp; 

She enjoyed cooking, knitting, bowling, playing bridge and crafts.

Betty’s surviving family include her husband Dean of the home; sons, Matthew Boxberger (Genevieve) of San Jose, California, Mark Boxberger (Amy) of Noblesville, Indiana, Thomas Boxberger (Sheri) of Lawrence, Kansas, Timothy Boxberger (Dylan Palma) of Russell, Kansas and Scott Boxberger (Desiree) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, George, Joe, Betsy, Jakob, Elyse, Gretchen, Cassie, Joshua, and Jenna;&nbsp; great-grandson, Rami; brother, Gene Balloun (Sheila Wombles) of Lenexa, Kansas; stepsister, Joanne Grandstaff (Carl) of Hoisington, Kansas; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George R. Balloun, Lloyd L. Balloun and Robert Balloun; sisters-in-law, Violetta Balloun, Nancy Balloun, Pat Balloun and Patty Balloun.
