Dee Von Bauer, age 56, died on August 12, 2023, surrounded by her family at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City, KS. &nbsp;She was born on August 31, 1966, in Ness City, the daughter of Gerald and Phyllis (Riepe) Leikam.

A lifetime resident of Ness County, Dee was very active in the community, especially serving as an EMT for 23 years with the Ness County EMS. &nbsp;She was also a member of the American Legion Riders, Post 392, the American Legion Auxiliary, Frank Stull Post 152, and the Sacred Heart Church. &nbsp;Dee was an active co-owner of Bradee’s Pumping Service. 

Dee loved being with her family and was very proud that all her children and grandchildren lived in Ness City.

Dee is survived by her husband, Brady; three sons, Josh Crombie and his wife, Lauren, Dalton Bauer and his wife, Madison, and William Bauer; her daughter, Britttany Bauer (Ty Renz) all of Ness City; one sister, JoAnn Hashenberger and her husband, Brian, of Natoma; a brother, Mike Sheldon of Utah; and six grandchildren, Breilynn Renz, Conner Salmans, Maverick Bauer, Denny Bauer, Brodee Renz, and Colter Renz.

A memorial service will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Saturday, August 19, 2023, 10:30 a.m.&nbsp;

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

Teresa (Teri) Lee Gould, rural Sheridan County

Teresa “Teri” Lee (King) Gould, 60, passed away at her home in rural Sheridan County on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Teri was born in Greeley, Colorado on September 6, 1962, to Don and Janice Anne (Ryan) King. 

Teri attended school in Greeley, Colorado graduating with the class of 1980. 

After graduating, she moved to Kansas to live with and help her sister with her family. In 1993, Teri met David Gould, and on March 24, 1994, David and Teri were united in marriage in Colby, Kansas.

Teri and David moved to the Gould homeplace and raised their family of four boys. Being from Colorado, Teri never lost her love of the mountains, but she came to love the prairies of Kansas. Besides taking care of her family, Teri had several jobs. Most of her work career was spent as an assistant to veterinarians caring for the animals at several feed lots.

&nbsp;For approximately 12 years, Teri and David raised Corgi dogs. Teri was an animal lover. She really enjoyed working with the cattle and her dogs. She raised chickens and ducks, and they would follow her around as if she were their mother. Teri enjoyed watching birds, especially cardinals. Teri took pride and pleasure in her rock and flower gardens.

 In recent years Teri had the joy of raising her granddaughter, Shayna. She loved attending Shayna’s school activities.

Teri is survived by her husband, David; sons, Mathew Gould of Liberty, Missouri, Jeremy Gould and wife Nicole of Pensacola, Florida, Casey Gould of Oakley, Kansas and Ryan Altman and wife Tika of Oakley, Kansas; one brother, Mark and one sister, Pam Hannon; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Janice King; brother-in-law, Eloi Trujillo; and nephew, Mathew Ryan.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Selden Funeral Chapel, Selden, Kansas from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Rexford Community Church, at 11:00 a.m.

Marcia Lynn “Marcy” Wagner, 71, Palco, Kansas, died Monday, August 14, 2023 at HaysMed.

She was born October 23, 1951 in Anderson, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Gloria (Ikast) Wagner.&nbsp; 

Marcy was a graduate of Palco High School, Fort Hays State University, and Southwestern College of Professional Studies where she earned a master of education Degree.&nbsp; 

Miss Wagner taught elementary school for 42 years, first in Smith Center and then in Palco.&nbsp; Marcy believed, “teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”&nbsp; Inspired by their aunt, two of Marcy’s nieces and a nephew are now teachers and carry on her legacy.&nbsp; After retiring from teaching, Marcy served as the city clerk for the City of Palco.

Marcy was a member of Red Line Church of God, where her father Paul once served as pastor.&nbsp; Marcy was a prolific quilter and loved spending time with her sewing friends.&nbsp; Additionally, she enjoyed reading, watching Hallmark movies, sharing Danish traditions, and playing games; her favorite was Rummikub.

Marcy is survived by her sister, Alesia Prichard of Las Vegas, NV and brother, Kevin (Tama) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; The loves of her life were her nieces and nephews, Jeremy (Keri) Prichard of Cheyenne, WY, Ariane (Jim) McCracken of Las Vegas, NV, Adam (Emily) Prichard of Watertown, MA, Katherine (Corey) Sanders, of Kansas City, MO, and Mitchell (Heather) Wagner of St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; She was also Great Aunt Marcy to a dozen of the brightest and most adorable great nieces and nephews.&nbsp; The family would also like to recognize Jane, Marlys, Johni, and all her dear friends for their ongoing care and support.&nbsp;

A celebration of life for Marcy will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Red Line Church of God, 3308 H Road, Palco, Kansas 67657.&nbsp;

Mike Muench passed away in his home on August 14, 2023. He was born June 5th, 1949, in Scott City, Kansas to John Muench and Monica Norris. 

Mike graduated from Scott Community High School in 1967. 

After high school he enlisted into the Army. He served in the Army from August 1969 to March 1971. He went to Vietnam January 1970 and was in the artillery unit until he came home in March 1971. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1971, as a SP-4. 

When he returned, he was a county appraiser for Scott County. He then later enrolled at Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1991 with a bachelor of arts degree. He went to work for Fort Hays State University as an IT specialist backing up their servers. He retired from FHSU in 2022.

When Mike returned from Vietnam, he met Judy Mitchell. They later married on August 5, 1972. From that marriage they had two children, Christopher, and Jennifer Muench. They later divorced. He then met Carla Harold and they married June 25, 1994. Mike became a stepfather to Michael and Kenneth Mortimore.

Mike loved his grandchildren; they were especially important to him. When he would visit them at their jobs, he would visit with everyone around him. That is how he became known as Grandpa around Hays. When he would see his grandchildren, he always asked if they needed gas in their cars. He enjoyed going to McDonalds every day and visiting with his friends. He loved his dog and always took her for a drive and a cheeseburger. Mike would go to church every day and pray; he had a strong faith in Christ.

Survivors include his son Christopher Muench (Nicole) of Hays, KS His daughter Jennifer Fox (David) of Wichita, KS; his two stepsons Michael Mortimore of Chase, KS, and Kenneth Mortimore (Billie Jo) of Scott City, KS. He also has two sisters, Jennifer Fairleigh (John) of Scott City and Janet Fiegel of Loveland, OH. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carla Muench, his parents John and Monica Muench, two brothers, JD Muench and Pat Muench, and a nephew, Jay Roger Muench.

The family would like those that are coming to the visitation Friday evening to wear their Chiefs or FHSU attire.&nbsp;

Viewing and visitation will be Friday, August 18, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with an Immaculate Heart of Mary parish vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m. all at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine Street, Hays, KS 67601.

Graveside services will be Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 2 p.m. in the Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, KS with viewing and visitation from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. prior to the graveside services at Price and Sons Funeral Home,&nbsp;401 South Washington Street, Scott City, KS 67871.

Michael 'Mike' Muench

In loving memory of Duane Edwin Riedel, 69, Arvada, CO, we are saddened to announce his passing on August 11, 2023, with his family by his side. Duane was born on April 9, 1954 in Ellis, KS to Edward and Bertha (Flax) Riedel. 

Duane attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Ellis High School in 1972. 

Duane married Veronika Lynn Bennett on September 3, 1983. Together they raised two children, April and John. 

After high school graduation, Duane enlisted in the United States Army on March 31, 1977, gained the rank of sergeant, and was honorably discharged on March 28, 1983. Duane was proudly decorated with the National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Expert Badge (Rifle M-16); and Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster. 

He was employed by and retired from Yellow Freight Trucking. 

After retirement Duane and his family settled in Arvada, CO, where he started his own handyman business. Duane was a master jack-of-all-trades and always loved helping others. Duane’s passion and hobby was his Cougar Eliminator automobile as well as other Cougar body styles. 

Duane is survived by his partner and best friend, Veronika, his children, April and John, and grandchildren, Christian, Kaleb, Colton, Ellie, Gray and Gracelyn. He is also survived by his siblings, Judy (Vic) Manz, Arvada, CO, Joyce Richardson, Arvada, CO, Wanda (David) Hill, Peyton, CO, Bernita Augustine, WaKeeney, KS, Melvin (Donna) Riedel, Marvin (Arlene) Riedel, Mary Kay (Curtis) Weber, all from Ellis, KS, Darren Riedel of Talala, OK, and sister-in-Law, Laura Riedel, of Wichita, KS, and many nieces and nephews. 

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bertha, and brother, Troy Riedel. 

Duane made friends easily and will be missed by so many lifelong friends and acquaintances. 

Services and Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.&nbsp;

 </figure>In loving memory of Duane Edwin Riedel, 69, Arvada, CO, we are saddened to announce his passing on August 11, 2023, with his family by his side. Duane was born on April 9, 1954 in Ellis, KS to Edward and Bertha (Flax) Riedel. Duane attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Ellis High School in 1972. Duane married Veronika Lynn Bennett on September 3, 1983. Together they raised two children, April and John. After high school graduation, Duane enlisted in the United States Army on March 31, 1977, gained the rank of sergeant, and was honorably discharged on March 28, 1983. Duane was proudly decorated with the National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Expert Badge (Rifle M-16); and Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster. He was employed by and retired from Yellow Freight Trucking. After retirement Duane and his family settled in Arvada, CO, where he started his own handyman business. Duane was a master jack-of-all-trades and always loved helping others. Duane’s passion and hobby was his Cougar Eliminator automobile as well as other Cougar body styles. Duane is survived by his partner and best friend, Veronika, his children, April and John, and grandchildren, Christian, Kaleb, Colton, Ellie, Gray and Gracelyn. He is also survived by his siblings, Judy (Vic) Manz, Arvada, CO, Joyce Richardson, Arvada, CO, Wanda (David) Hill, Peyton, CO, Bernita Augustine, WaKeeney, KS, Melvin (Donna) Riedel, Marvin (Arlene) Riedel, Mary Kay (Curtis) Weber, all from Ellis, KS, Darren Riedel of Talala, OK, and sister-in-Law, Laura Riedel, of Wichita, KS, and many nieces and nephews. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bertha, and brother, Troy Riedel. Duane made friends easily and will be missed by so many lifelong friends and acquaintances. Services and Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.&nbsp;

Judith Ann Cerny entered into heaven on August 14, 2023. Judy was born to Frank and Mary Cerny on June 10, 1944. 

She grew up on the farm near Narka and graduated from Narka High School. She was an active member of the Narka Presbyterian Church in her youth, teaching both Sunday school and helping with Bible school. Judy was also an active member of her local 4-H club.

After college, she began her career at Ralston Purina in 1972, working both in Kansas City and St. Louis. Although the company changed names and the business focus during her time there, Judy stayed true to the Purina brand until her retirement in 2004, where she retired as an administrative assistant, working for both the regional and national sales managers. Judy held a wealth of knowledge about Purina, and was often the person her co-workers went to with questions, as she always seemed to know the answer! According to her co-workers, she was a true Purina icon.

After her retirement from Purina, Judy and her life partner Robert “Bob” Davidson retired to Sarasota, Florida, to spend their remaining years in the warmth and sunshine. Judy genuinely hated the cold. Judy was an active member of the Tri-Par Estates community, assisting with the library, serving on the board, and helping with numerous fundraisers. Judy and Bob were avid water-walkers at the pool and rarely missed a day unless it was rainy or “just too dang cold!” She spent many hours reading mysteries, working on jigsaw puzzles, and building intricate Lego sets.

Under protest, she finally moved back home in 2022 due to health concerns. Her family was able to spend 11 wonderful months with Judy prior to her passing. They were able to catch her up on all the area news, and shared pictures and stories of the farm and her life. Judy resided at Gardenside in Fairbury; the staff loved her spunk, whit, and intelligence. She often bantered with the staff and was a whiz during their trivia games.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Cerny; aunts Olga and Clara Cerny, and the love of her life, Bob Davidson. Judy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Betty Cerny, her nieces Jennifer and Kim Cerny, numerous friends and Purina colleagues.

Visitation will be Friday, August 18th, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville.

Graveside Memorial Services will be Saturday, August 19, at 9:30 a.m., at National Cemetery, south of Narka.

Ricky James “Rick” Phelps, 62, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2023, at his home in rural Ellinwood, Kansas. He was born on June 30, 1961, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Eunice (Williams) Phelps. 

On June 7, 1997, he married Kathryn “Kathye” Ramsey in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. She survives.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Rick was the owner/operator of Dogwood Tree Service. Rick was a dedicated follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend, NRA, and former member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He was a gun enthusiast, coin collector, enjoyed horses and mules, but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Devin (Kate) Ramsey, Keylin (significant other, Shaelee) Phelps, and Brevan Phelps, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Amanda (Jeremy) King of Pratt, Madilyn Phelps of Salina, and Isabella Phelps of Ellinwood; five grandchildren with two more on the way, Dylan, Ryan, Lauren, Renly and Aryiah; his mother, Eunice Lane of Hoisington; and two brothers, Damon (Brenda Roat) Phelps of Hoisington, and Jimmy (Laurie) Krebs of Newark, Ohio. 

He was preceded in death by his father, James; and a son, Brandon Lee Phelps.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Fisher presiding.

Barbara “Joyce” Barnard, 83, died August 15, 2023, at Smokey Hill Health and Rehabilitation, Salina, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born August 22, 1939, at the family home in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of William “Harold” and Willena Maurine (Molt) Hosselston. &nbsp;

Joyce graduated from Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Illinois in 1957.

On October 13, 1956, she married David Paul “Pete” Barnard in Johnsonville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2014.

Pete and Joyce moved to Hoisington in the early 70s and she went to work for the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. &nbsp;Joyce was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. She enjoyed fishing trips with the family and will always be remembered by her family as a great cook, especially her homemade bread and pies. &nbsp;

Survivors include her four children, Kim Landers and husband Eric of Hoisington; Bryan Barnard and wife Diana of Pratt, Brad Barnard and wife Laura of Hoisington, and Kara Gale and husband Cory of Winfield; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three-year-old son, Ricky Barnard, sister, Virginia Cable, and brother, Gene Hosselton.&nbsp;

Dennis Eugene DeYoung, a devoted family man and accomplished heavy equipment operator, passed away at his home on Monday, April 24, 2023, at the age of 66. Born on July 11, 1956, in Plainville, Kansas, Dennis was the son of Stanley Calvin and Betty Jean (Osborn) DeYoung.

Dennis's life journey was marked by dedication, service, and a love for his family and country. He proudly served in the United States Army, a testament to his patriotism and commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear. His military service was a reflection of his character – steadfast and unwavering.

In his professional life, Dennis carved a path as a self-employed heavy equipment operator in both the land field and oilfield industry. His skills and expertise were evident as he took on various projects, including working for Pan-Am Construction in Africa during the late 70s and early 80s. He operated heavy equipment in places like Liberia and Kenya, showcasing his adaptability and competence in his field.

Dennis's heart was forever touched when he married Diane Elizabeth Geist on August 17, 1984, in Hays, Kansas. Together, they created a life full of shared experiences and cherished memories. However, life presented its challenges, and he experienced the profound loss of Diane on May 2, 2017, leaving a void that could never truly be filled.

Dennis found solace and joy in his passions. An ardent sports enthusiast, he took great pleasure in watching the OU Sooners and was an avid supporter of the LA Rams. Fishing provided him with moments of tranquility and reflection, allowing him to connect with nature and find peace amidst life's busyness.

Family remained at the core of Dennis's life. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his son, Calvin DeYoung of Damar, Kansas, and his daughter, Renee DeYoung of Great Bend, KS. He was a caring brother to three sisters: Terri (John) Richardson of Clairmont, NC; Janice (Dennis) Craven of Wichita, KS; and Janet (Mike) Bruna of Plainville, KS. Dennis cherished these relationships and the bonds they shared.

As he moves on to his final rest, Dennis is reunited with loved ones who have gone before him. He joins his parents, his beloved wife Diane, his infant daughter Elizabeth, and his nephew Adam Bruna in eternal peace.

A celebration of Dennis's life will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 1 p.m.at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center, located at 506 W. 6th in Hays, KS. Inurnment will follow at 3 p.m. at Pleasant View Cemetery in Palco, Kansas, where he will be honored with military honors courtesy of the Plainville VFW Post 8871 Honor Guard.

Bruce Franklin Garnand died at the age of 99. He grew up in Garden City, a small town in southwest Kansas along the Arkansas River. His parents were Bryant and Edith. Bryant was a businessman, and Edith was a woman ahead of her time. Once, Bruce floated down the Arkansas River with a couple of high school friends, Fielding Hands and Chester Kneef, when it was flooded. It almost ended in disaster, because of a diversion dam across the river. They survived but didn’t get back to Garden City until after dark. Bruce worked for a man who farmed a lot of land.

Fortunately because of his agricultural deferment, Bruce entered late into WWII. When he was finally drafted, very unfortunately he was placed in the infantry. The infantry took 80% of the casualties in the Army. Bruce carried a Browning Automatic Rifle and lots of ammunition. He saw about forty-five days of combat in Germany. After Victory-in-Europe Day, he was transferred through the United States, had a thirty-day furlough, and then was scheduled to be deployed for the invasion of Japan. Luckily, when Japan surrendered, Bruce was still in the United States. The Army then shipped him to the Philippines for about one year of occupation. After discharge from the Army, Bruce attended a local junior college for one year. He then attended Kansas State University in Manhattan for two years, followed by two years at Ohio State University earning a bachelor’s of science in business administration. While there, he met his wife Marilyn Magnun. She was one of only two women in a large class in industrial organization, which she was required to take for her master’s degree in commercial dietetics. After Bruce graduated, he and Marilyn moved to Garden City. He worked in the Garnand family businesses including a greenhouse, flower shop, furniture store, and funeral home. Bruce and Marilyn had three children: Nanci, Scott, and Patti. A good friend started a capital stock savings and loan where Bruce served as one of the directors. Because of this experience, in 1962 another firm hired him to start a savings and loan in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was fired thirty days after the savings and loan opened. Marilyn said that he was fired because he was not a yes-man. Bruce and his family were able to stay in Santa Fe because his father gave him money each month and also loaned him money for investing in real estate. He bought junk houses, cleaned them up, sometimes having to add a bathroom, and sold them with a small down payment under a real estate contract. Later, Bruce decided to start his own mutual savings and loan. In order to do so, he had to go to court to get the banking commissioner to approve a non-insured savings and loan. The approval process took three years. After obtaining the approval, Bruce opened Security Mutual Savings &amp; Loan. Bruce initially worked for no salary and later when the company could afford it, a low salary. After several years of operation, the company was bought by an Albuquerque savings and loan. Bruce was a licensed pilot and when he wanted to travel to Garden City, he would rent a 4-passenger Cessna 172 airplane. His family of five would climb into the plane and fly to Garden City, with the three kids in the back seat. Once on a windy landing at Garden City, he was notified that a plane had just flipped over when it turned into a taxiway. Because of this, Bruce decided to land on the tarmac of the airport, and people ran out to hold down the windward wing and push the plane to the safety of the hangar. Bruce and Marilyn were active with their children, taking them downhill skiing, water skiing, camping, sailing, motor boating, and hiking. When Bruce started taking his family camping they used a small canvas 4-person tent that they all could crowd into. Eventually he bought a pickup with dual wheels and a cab-over camper. Over the years they had a small 9-foot sailboat called a Sea Snark, fishing boats, a 16-foot Hobie Cat, and a nice green boat with an inboard motor that he had to make payments on. Bruce and Marilyn enjoyed snorkeling and scuba diving. They made over 100 dives in different parts of the Caribbean with a group of people organized by Bruce Winke, who was a physicist from Los Alamos National Laboratory. Bruce was a voracious reader and he often purchased books in bulk to gift them to family and friends in hopes of both educating and sharing perspectives. Whenever he exhausted his current supply of books, magazines, and newspapers he would read the World Book Encyclopedia.

Bruce was a lifelong active member and supporter of the Methodist Church and one of the founders of the St John’s Methodist Church Foundation in Santa Fe. He was a member of the Rotary Club for about 62 years, first in Garden City, and later in Santa Fe. After he left the club, he was awarded an honorary membership in the Rotary Club. After a long illness, Bruce’s wife Marilyn died under hospice care at home with Bruce by her side. Later, Bruce met Gretchen Kinzie when she was on her daily walk, but taking a different route than usual. Bruce and Gretchen married and had a very happy life. Gretchen has four children: Hon, Kli, Magon, and Dnae. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas with Rev. Jim Akins officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Southwest Kansas Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Mary Edith Anderson, 101, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at High Plains Retirement Village Assisted Living in Lakin, Kansas. She was born September 3, 1921, in Holcomb, Kansas, the daughter of William Robert and Ethel Mary (Norton) Smith. Mary grew up in Holcomb, Kansas where she attended Holcomb schools.

She lived most of her life in Garden City. Mary lived in Garden City, Webb City, Oklahoma, Kit Carson, Colorado, Deerfield, Kansas, Shidler, Oklahoma, Cedarvale, Kansas, and Blackwell, Oklahoma, before moving to Lakin, Kansas in 2018. 

On January 27, 1938, she married Herman Edward Anderson. 

Mary worked for many years at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City as a cook until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, collecting gnomes, and her flowers especially sunflowers. Survivors include three sons, Tommy Ray Anderson of Tornado, West Virginia, George Bret Anderson of Great Bend, Kansas, and Gordon Eugene Anderson of Cimarron, Kansas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Herman who died on January 26, 1974. She is also preceded in death by her parents; eight sons William Edward Anderson, Jimmy Clifford Anderson, Ronald Dean Anderson, Ivan David Anderson, Kenneth Leon Anderson, Richard Warren Anderson, Jerry Lee Anderson, and Bobby Joe Anderson; a daughter, Susan Marie Graves; three brothers William Lee Smith, Theodore Harmon Smith, and Elmer Ray Smith; a sister, Faye Williamson Dale; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakin, Kansas with Rev. Rita Stockton officiating. Antonio Salvatore Mesa, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 with his wife Vicky and son John by his side. Tony was born and raised in Garden City, Kansas to John and Mary Mesa.

 After graduating from Boys Town, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam (1967-1968) and Germany (1968-1969) as a member of the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Upon returning home, he attended Garden City Community College where he obtained an associate’s degree in 1971. He continued his studies at Kansas State University where he obtained a bachelor of science in sociology in 1973. He went on to receive a master of social work from the University of Kansas in 1975. 

He would work as a social worker for the next eighteen years at the Kansas State Department of Social Rehabilitative Services (1975-2003) before moving on to the State Department of Aging (2003-2011) where he worked as a quality assurance supervisor. He also spent twenty six years (1994-2018) as a home care provider at the Center for Developmentally Disabled.

Tony was the Ccommander of the American GI Forum, Kansas City Area Chapter and local board member for the United States Selective Service System, Region 3. He was a board member of El Centro Inc., (1985-1987) and enjoyed coaching his son’s soccer teams at the YMCA. 

Tony was a dedicated Catholic and member of St. Robert Bellarmine in Blue Springs, Missouri. Tony loved helping others and lived to serve. 

Whether someone needed a ride, a babysitter, an extra hand making home improvements, or a loan, Tony was ready to help. He was a passionate man who loved listening to music, antiquing and keeping up on politics.

Tony is preceded in death by his father John G. Mesa; siblings John C. Mesa; Mary Rose Morley and Pasquale Mesa. Survivors include his wife Vicky Mesa; children Lisa Bruno; Antonio Mario Mesa; Melisa Mesa; Antonio Salvatore Mesa; and John Mesa; mother Maria Plescia; sister Clara Martinez; brothers Joe and Carlo Alvarado; 16 grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and friends.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4313 SW 7 HWY, Blue Springs, Missouri 64014.

Ingalls- Dennis E. “Denny” Maxwell, 74, died on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Halsey Hall, Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge. He was born on September 7, 1948 at Dodge City the son of Robert &amp; Dorothy (Rixon) Maxwell. 

He married Donna J. Fickler on May 27, 1972 at Garden City. Denny graduated from Ingalls High School in 1966 where he was on the basketball, football and track teams.

He spent one year at Garden City Community College before enlisting in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea where he was a helicopter crew chief, mainly flying the General between the DMZ and the base. 

After his discharge he returned to the area and worked at Oswalt Manufacturing for a year before becoming a lifelong farmer on the family farm in Gray County. He retired in 2020. He was a member of St James Lutheran Church, Harry H. Renick American Legion Post #9 and John J. Haskell VFW Post # 2279. He enjoyed building, painting and riding in his Volkswagen dune buggies, NASCAR and Kansas State University Football. He is survived by his wife Donna J. Maxwell, son Aaron and Audrey Maxwell of Ingalls, sisters Connie Clendennen of Blair, Oklahoma and Pam Kitch of Great Bend, and grandchildren Shae Maxwell, Gavin Maxwell and Clayton Maxwell. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2023 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev Tim Hickey officiating. Floy Ann Lay was born on October 22, 1943, to Ninuel Blevins and Helen Lola (Newman) Lay in Fallbrook, Calif. On August 4, 2023, Floy went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Her faith in Christ is what helped her make it through life’s ups and downs. 

Floy Ann married Larry J. Holbrook in 1960, and they were blessed with three daughters: Laura, Diane, and Katy. In 1969, Floy Ann and Buster McKnight were blessed with a daughter whom she gave her mother’s middle name, Lola.

In 1972, Floy Ann married Joseph Dale Pettit. Their first home was in Beaumont, Calif. until they purchased property in Yucca Valley, Calif. They built their home themselves, one board at a time, and spent nearly 50 years there until her husband’s passing. Between them, they had nine children.

Floy Ann worked as a nurse aide in Yucca Valley. 

She also worked with her husband, painting and doing home repairs. Her hobbies included watercolor painting, sewing, and creating costumes for her husband to wear when he played guitar and sang at schools and libraries. Floy Ann also enjoyed cooking—she grilled the world’s best BBQ ribs! But her greatest joy came from just being our mom.

There was never a time you would leave her home hungry. If she knew of someone in need of anything—from a shoulder to cry on, to a good laugh—she was always there for them. Mom had a green thumb and could grow anything. She loved living in the high desert and enjoyed the plants and wildlife native to that area.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Stockton, Kansas to be close to the majority of her children who call the state home. Eventually she moved to Dawson Place in Hill City, Kansas.

Floy Ann is survived by her four daughters: Laura (Rick) Murray of La Crosse, Kansas; Kate (Darin) Terry of Woodston, Kansas; Diane Holbrook, also of Woodston; and Lola (William) Reese of Caldwell, Idaho. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Daniel Murray, Kim Blunt, Travis Reese, Chris (Jenny) Murray, Kelly (Dave) Stephen, Christina Hays, David (Tera) Murray, Dusty Terry, Markus McKnight, and Matthew (Chelsea) Terry. Her surviving loved ones also include 24 great-grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Just a few of the loved ones waiting for her on the other side include her husband, parents, one granddaughter, three nephews, one niece, one stepson, one stepdaughter, three brothers and three sisters.

Floy Ann will be laid to rest next to her husband on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the Stockton City Cemetery.

Noveline Mae (Zeller) Haremza, 79, of Colby, died Sunday, August 13, 2023. She was born to Alvin and C. Marie Zeller on April 29, 1945, in Scott City, Kansas. At the age of seven, 

Noveline became a polio survivor. On August 20, 1963, Noveline married, and later divorced, Lester Haremza. From this union were born two children, Velma and Ronald (Ron).

Noveline experienced life as a homemaker while her children were young. 

Once her children were older, she worked until 2005 in the retail industry. In 2005, she began working at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby, Kansas. She enjoyed greeting the museum’s visitors and appreciated all the history comprised with this position. Noveline retired from the museum in April of this year. Noveline was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ron Haremza; grandson, Teryn Haremza; brother, John; brothers-in-law, Lawerence Rall and David Healy; and a nephew, Matthew Healy. Noveline is survived by her daughter, Velma, and son-in-law, Travis; grandsons, Tayber Haremza and Tanner Goodheart; siblings, Jeannine Rall, Violet Healy, Larry (Nadene) Zeller, Sherry (Chris) Mead, and many nieces and nephews. A small family graveside service will be conducted at a later date. Gerald E. “Jerry” Wiechman, age 94, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 9, 1928, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, the son of John and Hilda Koch Wiechman.&nbsp; 

A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 1929, he moved with his family from Sedgwick County, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm for miles north of Scott City.&nbsp; He was a farmer and stockman.&nbsp;

Jerry, as he was best known, attended schools in Scott County, graduating with the class of 1946.&nbsp; 

Following graduation, Jerry became engaged in farming with his father.&nbsp; He became a very aggressive farmer, introducing many new practices both in farming and the cattle business, one of which was the introduction of high-moisture corn as cattle feed to Scott County and Kansas.

Jerry was active in his church serving numerous positions.&nbsp; He also served on the Lutheran Hospital Board, Scott County and Kansas Livestock Association, charter member of the Scott COOP, and served as a board member and president of Western Kansas Groundwater Management, Scott County Soil Conservation, Park Lane Nursing Home board, and alongside his wife Joyce, served as chairman of the All-School Reunion Committees in 1980, 1990 and 1995, and Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3110.

Jerry was an adventurous sort.&nbsp; He sneaked a parental signature from his mother to play football in high school, knowing full well that his dad would say no.&nbsp; He never got over his love for football and got to relive it when his grandson, Erik was on the varsity team.

As a senior in high school, he was a member of the SCHS Flying Club where he achieved a solo license.&nbsp; 

His favorite hobby, however, was probably his work.&nbsp; He took great pride in growing beautiful crops and marketing good cattle.&nbsp; It was rumored that Jerry and his brother Donnie (with whom he partnered for many years) had the straightest rows in Scott County.&nbsp; In 1958 he was the winner of the 100 Bushel Milo Club, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and was the “Outstanding Young Farmer” of Scott County in 1961.&nbsp; His farm became a frequent stop for governors and foreign dignitaries.&nbsp; He served as a mentor for many young men who worked for him as summer jobs.

When his sons grew up they became partners with their dad.&nbsp; The operation has continued to grow despite many tough setbacks.&nbsp; Some hail storms and falling cattle prices tried really hard to put him out of business, but Jerry was a very determined man and always came back fighting.&nbsp; He was very proud of his sons when he opted to turn operations over to them.&nbsp; After Gordon’s death, he again became very proud of his grandsons, Erik and Brian who became partners as well.

Jerry loved having fun too.&nbsp; His hobbies included fishing, hunting, dancing, square dancing, and in later years golfing and traveling especially in the motorhome, and being a super grandpa.&nbsp; Just when he and Joyce were starting to enjoy retirement, their son Gordon’s death made it necessary for him to spend more time at the farm, but Jay gave him a leave of absence to spend winters in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sons Jay W. Wiechman of Kirwin, Kansas, Norman and Laura Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, daughter-in-law Susan Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sister Velda Riddiough of Scott City, Kansas, 10 grandchildren, Erik and Leann Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Brian and Mikayla Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Jaycie Gluck of Savage Minnesota, Jeremy and Annagrey Wiechman of Little Elm, Texas, Kenny and Cyreesa Wiechman of Georgetown, Texas, Jessica and Luke Adkins of Salina, Kansas, Gabrel and Kristen Baca of Austin, Texas, Joseph and Megan Baca of Wichita, Kansas, Jerrad and Stephanie Lewis of Eudora, Kansas, Josh and Cynthia Lewis of Garden City, Kansas, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gordon Wiechman, three brothers, Marvin Wiechman, Martin Wiechman, Donald Wiechman, three sisters, Geneva Faurot, Luella Erskin, and LaVera King.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Matthew Koterba presiding.
