On August 2nd of this year she left her earthly body and now resides with her Heavenly Father, and our Lord&nbsp; and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on December 22, 1947 at Fort Leavenworth Station Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to John Dee Brisco and Imogene Evelyn Winchell.

At the time of her birth, her father was in the Army Air Corps and was later absorbed into the United States Air Force. As a child growing up her father was stationed in places such as Hawaii, Japan, California, Oklahoma and Texas; it was during these deployments that she received the majority of her education. 

Whenever her father was stationed abroad where the family couldn’t accompany him, they would live with her maternal grandparents in Kansas City, Kansas. Her father later retired from the Air Force in El Paso, Texas. On June 9, 1967 she earned her operator's certificate from the 5th Texas State Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists and worked as a manicurists at a salon in El Paso, Texas. On August 12, 1969 she married Coy Davis, El Paso County, Texas and it was at that time that they moved to Garden City, Kansas. While married to Coy, she was employed as an inhalation therapist at St. Catherine Hospital. They were divorced on March 16, 1979. In 1974, she was hired by Juvenile Judge Donald Farr as a secretary for the Finney County Probation Department. She then worked as the administrative secretary for the state of Kansas 25th Judicial District Court Services Division and the state of Kansas 25th Judicial District Court. She retired on December 31, 2012 after completing 38 years of service. On May 23, 1980, she married Daryl D. Huckins at the First Christian Church, Garden City, Kansas. On May the 23rd of this year they celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending her time attending Bible studies, helping with vacation bible school and volunteering at her church. She was a member of the YMCA Aerobics and nurtured many new friends who met regularly for meals and celebrating birthdays. She also enjoyed her cross and angel collection. For years she and her husband would tour on their motorcycle and even went as far as Florida which included a round trip of 13 states. 

She is survived by her husband of the home; a brother, Anthony Brisco , Bradford, Tennessee, her son Michael (Tracy) Davis, Holcomb, Kansas and two stepsons, Shawn (Junita) and Darren (Lorraine Bruce) Huckins of Hempstead, Texas along with one maternal granddaughter and great-grandson and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren from their blended union. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and another stepson, Richard Huckins of Bellville, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. August 5, 2023 at the First Christian Church of Garden City. Kansas.

James Roger Purdy, age 73, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his home in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;He was born December 29, 1949 in Hays, Kansas, the son of John Edward and Loretta Bonita (Gross) Purdy.

Jim graduated from the St. Joseph Military Academy in 1968.

 He was united in marriage to Judith Kay Dreiling on January 2, 1971 in Hays, Kansas, and to this union two children were born, Jason and Jean.

He served as a police officer for 32 years at the Hays Police Department, retiring as the assistant chief of police in 2004.

Jim was a devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, and dog-dad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stephen and Robert Purdy; his sister, Louise (Richard) Neumann; and his in-laws, Verlin and Janie Dreiling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judith; his children Jason (Rachel) Purdy and Jean (Richard) Appelhanz; his brother Anthony (Chris) Purdy; his sisters-in-law Penny (Robert) Purdy and Carol (Stephen) Purdy; his grandchildren Joshua Purdy and significant other Samantha Assmann, Richard Appelhanz, Morgan Purdy, Allison Appelhanz and significant other Sierra Paden, and Jonathan Appelhanz; his beloved fur babies, Jaguar and Tesla; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Denton Ralph “Rip” Schlegel, 78, passed away on July 31, 2023, at Azria Health, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on June 20, 1945, at Hoisington, Kansas, to Ralph &amp; Carrie (Gustin) Schlegel. 

On October 27, 1973, he married Linda Monroe at Hoisington, Kansas. &nbsp;She died November 28, 2010.

Mr. Schlegel was a lifetime resident of Barton County. 

He was a 1963 graduate of Otis High School. During his time in high school, he earned the nickname “Rip” for how he would rip the nets from basketball goals and make three-point shots before they were a common shot made. 

Denton worked as a machinist at Great Bend Industries for over 30 years. 

When he wasn’t mowing yards or being directed in life by Linda and Glen, he enjoyed polka dances and loved going to Las Vegas.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Jeannette (Ken) Clark of Shawnee; nieces and nephews; and many friends.&nbsp;

Denton is preceded in death by his wife; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Wanda Schlegel; his parents; and his parents-in-law, Glen and Rosemary Monroe.

Arthur “Art” Francis Wagner was born on October 17, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, to Arthur A. Wagner and Hedwig (Werth) Wagner. He passed from this life on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 74 years. 

Art was reared and educated in Victoria, Kansas, and graduated with the Victoria High School Class of 1966. He furthered his education at Fort Hays Kansas State College in Hays and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree in business. 

Art married Joyce (Rohr) Wagner on August 30, 1969, in Vincent, Kansas. 

He spent most of his working life as a corporate tax specialist with Cities Service, later known as Occidental Petroleum, before his retirement after 40-plus years. 

Art was a longtime faithful member of St. Henry Catholic Church in Owasso, Oklahoma, where he was active with the Men’s Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed a variety of pastimes such as hunting, fishing, bowling, reading, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his loving wife of over 53 years,&nbsp;Joyce Wagner;&nbsp;three sons,&nbsp;Todd Wagner and wife Vicki,&nbsp;Bryan Wagner and wife Belinda,&nbsp;Jason Wagner and wife Christine;&nbsp;seven grandchildren,&nbsp;Ethan Wagner, Camdyn Wagner, Mason Mathis, Maddie Mathis, Maizy Wagner, Sydney Wagner, and Ryan Mathis;&nbsp;three siblings,&nbsp;Ron Wagner, Jeanette Pfannenstiel, and Gary Wagner

Morgan D. “Smitty” Smith, 92, passed away on July 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on January 2, 1931, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the son of John P. and Pauline (Swann) Smith.&nbsp;

On June 2, 1956, he married Norma L. Whitsel at First Christian Church in Great Bend, Kansas. &nbsp;She died October 20, 2021.

Mr. Smith was a resident of Hoisington for 60 years, coming from Lawton, Oklahoma, and Great Bend. 

He was the owner and operator of Smith Acid Company. 

Morgan was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend and V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, painting portraits and landscapes, tinkering with watches and guns, and gardening. His family was left with his many examples and lessons of the importance of a strong work ethic and a giving, charitable nature.&nbsp;

Survivors include five children, Michael D. (Debbie) Smith of Hoisington, Randall D. Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, Sabrina (Oscar) Mariño of Lawrence, Sonya (Wayde) Brozek of Wamego, and Kevin (Jennifer) Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma; his parents; and siblings, Gloria Guyselman, Marie Yarmuk, and Paul Smith.

“Wilma” Mumm Ritter, born Helena Wilhelmina Mumm, was born to Anthony (Tony) and Mary (Kemper) Mumm on November 22nd, 1931, on the family Homestead in Selden.

 She graduated from Selden High School as salutatorian in 1949. 

On November 23, 1950, Wilma was united in marriage to Cletus Henry Ritter at the Sacred Heart Church in Selden, Kansas.

In her early years, she enjoyed riding horses and the bicycle she shared with her brother Carl, and eventually sharing the bicycle with her children. She started driving when she was in the 8th grade and drove herself to school where math was her least favorite subject. Wilma enjoyed playing the piano, watching westerns on television and dancing and listening to polka music and, also line dancing. She enjoyed riding in the car to see the county and was so happy to finally purchase a brand-new car. Mom enjoyed playing bingo and to let everyone know she bingo.

Wilma was a homemaker, farmer’s wife and was blessed with nine children. She loved sewing and making her kids clothes like the girl’s dresses and the boy’s shirts. There was never a shortage of good home-cooked meals in the house. Wilma loved cooking and bringing her family together centered around the table. Many hours were spent outside where she fed the chickens, gathered eggs, milked cows, and had a large plentiful vegetable and flower garden.

She had many talents including creating beautiful wedding cakes. Her first wedding cake was for her eldest daughter’s wedding in 1972. She spent many hours baking and frosting her creations and they were used to celebrate many joyous occasions for her family and community. She took pictures of the hundreds of cakes she created over a 45-year span. In addition to her cakes, she made the best homemade ice cream.

After her family had grown up and moved out, she worked at Stop to Shop in Hoxie as a cook, for a dairy farm milking cows and was a cook for the school district in Rexford. Her love of caring for others continued as she took care of those in need with home healthcare visits.

She belonged to the Sacred Heart Church of Selden and Altar Society, and Selden Garden Club and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Citizen Center. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary every day until COVID. Then she started praying the rosary twice a day.

She loved spending time with her family, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids and caring for others and how much she enjoyed them. She lived her life full of love, warmth, and compassion and was rarely upset or unhappy. She radiated sheer goodness, patience, and positivity.

Proceeding her in death was her husband Cletus, her daughter Patricia, her parents, her brothers, Francis and Carl, and many other family members.

She is survived by her sons Bernard (and Barbara) Ritter, Robert (and Laura) Ritter, Michael (and friend Rhonda) Ritter, daughters Juanita (and Ken) Denning, Karen Simon, Mariane Garza, Janet Baalman, Carleen (and Steve) Brewer and 32 grandkids, 48 great-grandkids, five great-great-grandkids, sisters-in-law Bernadine Spresser, Margaret Ritter, and Frieda Goetze.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 10:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Family will receive guests from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Selden Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Selden.

Billy George Akin-Summers, age 59, of Garfield, Kansas passed away on Saturday evening, July 29, 2023 at his home after a long battle with COPD and congestive heart failure. &nbsp;Billy was born on October 31, 1963 to Elvis McFarland and Loretta Yocham in Vian, Oklahoma. &nbsp;His mother later married Elmer Akin, who adopted Billy. &nbsp;

Billy belonged to a large family of 12 sisters and 8 brothers: &nbsp;Marylou, John, and James (and Leslie) of Arkansas; Gladys, Edna (and Jim), Tracy, Doug (and Lori), and Les of Kansas; Betty (and Dan), Bea (and Neev), Ethel, Lisa (and John), Don, and Jesse (and Kim) of Oklahoma. 

Billy made a living by hanging drywall, roofing, and did some truck driving. He was known to be a jokester and often made up names to make you laugh.

Billy married Sandra Hill in 1992. &nbsp;In July of 1992 they welcomed a daughter, Sandeana. As years passed, they later divorced.

In 2008, Billy and Susan started dating and later married on May 12, 2018 at Ottawa, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with four boys: &nbsp;Shawn, David, Jason, and Zackhary; and three brothers-in-law, Rick, Steve (and Dena), and Chris (and Clarissa).

Billy has 18 beautiful grandchildren: &nbsp;Cameron, Jordyn, Jolynn, Astrid, Jazzmine, Gavin, Jayden, Dayton, Dakota, Alexa, Kayleen, Jordan, Zayden, James, Jame-Lynn, Kayson, William and Asuna. Plus, there are many nieces and nephews. Billy was a big family man and loved them all. Billy also had three good friends he could count on in Loren, Jody, and Shelly.

Billy had a passion for writing songs, singing, and playing the guitar. He loved entertaining not only his family with his talent but would also go to the nursing homes and share his love for music with the elderly. &nbsp;Billy also enjoyed fishing and was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan. &nbsp;One of his fondest memories is watching the Chiefs game with Sue, Zack, and Dakota and seeing who would cuss and scream the loudest.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings (Ruby, Billie June, Barbara, Wendy, Edward, William, and Roy); son Zackhary and grandchildren Astrid and Jame-Lynn.

Cremation has been chosen. &nbsp;A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date to be announced. &nbsp;

She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and then went on to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and worked for a period of time at Cherry Village Long Term Care in Great Bend. &nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Gary L. Gugins on May 22, 2010 at Great Bend. &nbsp;

Gina loved baking cookies and candy, enjoyed surfing the Internet, and loved watching her purple martin birds outside her home. She also dearly loved her three dogs and her cat.

Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Gugins of Kinsley, Kansas; her father, Gary R. Ellis of Great Bend, Kansas; two brothers,&nbsp;Brian and Brent Ellis, both of Great Bend; nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her mother Clara May Ellis on January 1, 2013.

Robert Murphy passed into heaven on July 30, 2023, at Diversicare in Larned.

He was born on September 10, 1935, in Pawnee County to John and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Murphy. 

On June 5, 1955 he married Janice LaVonne Ashworth at Macksville, Kansas; she survives. 

Other survivors include: his children, Steven (Lynda) Murphy, Linda (Rocky) Fox, Jeff (Fay) Murphy, 12 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren with twin great-grandsons to be born soon. He also had many nephews and nieces. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Lester Murphy, J.D. Murphy, Melvin Murphy, two sisters, Nora Blackburn, and Verna Lea Kirkwood, a son, Mark Murphy, a granddaughter, Kariane Murphy, and a great-grandson, Jerryd Washington.

Bob was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned. He was employed at Doerr Metal Products for thirty-seven years, many of those as a foreman. Bob served six years in the Kansas National Guard. 

Bob had many interests; he enjoyed country music, but his great love was racing. He drove a stock racecar in the 1950s, followed all the NASCAR races, and attended several of them with his good friend, John Carlson.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023, at the First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Beckwith Mortuary with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Katina Marie Wakefield, 48, passed away early Wednesday morning on July 26, 2023.&nbsp;

In her final moments she was surrounded by loving family including her beloved children, daughter Kaja Wakefield, son Kyson Wakefield, husband of 26 years Jody Wakefield, her mother Cindi Moses and stepfather Woody, brother James Geist and his wife Jamie. She is also survived by her grandmothers Wilma Unrein and Marian Geist. 

She is preceded in death by her father Jim Geist. Katina was born to Jim and Cindi (Unrein) Geist on November 4, 1974 in WaKeeney, Kansas. She graduated from Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University.&nbsp; She was a master gardener, taking great pride in photos of her flowers, as well as an accomplished violinist, playing most recently in the Kansas City Kansas Community Orchestra and Metropolitan Strings Academy. She shared this passion and love of music with her children Kaja and Kyson, who followed in her footsteps and excelled on the cello and drums, respectively. She enjoyed any opportunity to listen to live music, whether from her children, her friends, or favorite artists.

She expressed her love for animals by babying her puppy Cooper and displaying many of her favorite peacock decorations in her home. She is also survived by her grandmothers Wilma Unrein and Marian Geist. She is preceded in death by her father Jim Geist. Katina was born to Jim and Cindi (Unrein) Geist on November 4, 1974 in WaKeeney, Kansas. She graduated from Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University.&nbsp; She was a master gardener, taking great pride in photos of her flowers, as well as an accomplished violinist, playing most recently in the Kansas City Kansas Community Orchestra and Metropolitan Strings Academy. She shared this passion and love of music with her children Kaja and Kyson, who followed in her footsteps and excelled on the cello and drums, respectively. She enjoyed any opportunity to listen to live music, whether from her children, her friends, or favorite artists. She expressed her love for animals by babying her puppy Cooper and displaying many of her favorite peacock decorations in her home. Nicholas “Nick” Henry Von Lintel, 72, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Nick was born on April 16, 1951, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Lawrence and Theresa Marie (Rohleder) Von Lintel.&nbsp; He grew up in the Quinter area and graduated from Quinter High School in 1969.&nbsp; 

He met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Mary Gayle Meier, on August 23, 1969, in St. Peter, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union they were blessed with two daughters, Tana and Trina.&nbsp; 

They moved to Russell, Kansas in 2006, where he worked as a maintenance and repairman for the USD 407 School District.&nbsp;

 He was a longtime member with St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell.&nbsp; He enjoyed reading, working with his hands, remodeling his home himself and working on hotrods. He currently was working on his beloved 1948, Dodge Pickup and was trying to finish it before he became ill.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and being involved with his grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife Mary of the home; daughters Tana Sells (Roger) of Russell, Kansas and Trina Yauch of Hays, Kansas; brothers Larry Von Lintel (Debi) of Goodland, Kansas and Bruce Von Lintel (Jamie) of Larned, Kansas; sisters Annette Reitmayer (Jerry) of Derby, Kansas and Kathy Blackwill (Jim) of Quinter, Kansas; four grandchildren Chelsea Eickhoff (Kenneth), Nick Sells, Brandon and Caden Yauch; two great-grandchildren Karsen and Ryker Eickhoff.&nbsp;

 He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of the funeral mass for Nick will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell.&nbsp; A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Park, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the mortuary.&nbsp; A vigil and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Memorials may be given to the Russell Regional Hospital and sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp;

LAKIN -&nbsp; Virginia Viola Salem, 95, died on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. She was born on May 15, 1928 at Holly, Colorado the daughter of Claude Earl &amp; Anna Mae (Schoonover) Tyree. She and George W. Sauer had seven children together. Virginia graduated from Pikes Peak Institute of Technology in Colorado Springs and worked as a medical lab tech and X-ray tech at Kearny County Hospital before becoming a traveling tech for area hospitals.

She raised seven kids on a farm and ranch and also drove the LA Case tractor. She was an excellent seamstress and made her daughters' clothes and boys' shirts and patched all the jeans which there were plenty with five rowdy boys. She loved dancing and her children remember her and George gliding across the dance floor like they were on air. She was a gifted musician who sang, played guitar and yodeled. She is survived by five Children- John Gordon and Beverly Sauer of Emporia, Richard Dwight Sauer of Lakin, Karen Louise and George Burns of Lakin, Joyce Ann and Nelson Rider of Lakin and George William (Captain) and Darla Sauer of Lakin, 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two ons- Michael Ray “Mickey” Sauer and Kenneth Erwin Sauer, three brothers- Bill Tyree, Wayne Tyree and Russell Tyree, sister- Marilyn Lamborn and grandson- Larry Lee Burns. Carl Victor Wahlmeier, 81, of Jennings, KS died Thursday, July 27, 2023. Carl was born February 5, 1942, to Aloysius Louis and Credilla Ruth (Spohrer) Wahlmeier in the family farm house near Jennings, KS. 

He graduated from Jennings High School in 1960. He spent his freshman year of college playing football at McCook Community College in McCook, NE. He transferred to Kansas State University and earned a bachelor of science in agricultural education in 1964.

Carl was united in the sacrament of marriage to Linda Stackhouse at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, KS on January 2, 1963. They celebrated 60 years of marriage this year. Carl and Linda knew each other throughout their school years and their parents were friends. As they grew up, Linda said Carl was always her protector.

After college, Carl served as a high school vocational agriculture instructor and FFA advisor for many years beginning in Scandia, KS, then Norton, KS, with most of his career at Jennings High School. He also coached high school sports including football, women’s basketball, women’s track, and men’s basketball. Carl was passionate about education and enjoyed working with young people.

As much as Carl loved teaching and coaching, his true vocation was farming. He and his wife Linda took over the family farm from his parents in 1975. Carl always explored new farming methods and crop varieties. He was an early adopter of no-till farming and raised certified seed wheat. Carl served on the board of directors for the National Farmers Organization (NFO) for several years. He was a board member and served as chair for the Decatur County Natural Resources Conservation Service. He farmed until his retirement at age 78 in 2020.

Family was important to Carl. He and Linda loved their children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, siblings, nieces, and nephews. There was always a gathering at the farm to either work on a project or celebrate an event. Many young people lived with Carl and Linda at various times for various reasons. They unofficially adopted Eric Strick as their fifth son and are very proud of him and his young family. Carl and Linda also hosted two foreign exchange students, Andrej Radonic of Germany, and Michiko Wada of Japan.

Carl was devoted to his faith and served as a role model to those around him. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, KS. He served in many roles over the years including as a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and Linda told their sons that the greatest gift they gave them was their faith in God.

Everyone enjoyed Carl’s sense of humor. He never missed a chance to use a pun or tell a “dad joke.” What we loved the most is that he couldn't tell a joke without the following happening; he would start the joke, then he would start giggling so hard that he couldn’t speak, next we all would start to laugh because he was laughing, finally he would get the punchline wrong and we would all explode in laughter. To say he will be missed is an understatement. Carl’s legacy is one of hard work, kindness, humor, humble devotion to God, and love of family.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers Norbert, Vincent, Robert, Galen, Paul, and Louis Wahlmeier; sisters Loretta Byrne, Virginia Bruggeman, Rita Pallante, and Sister Francis Cabrini (Mae) Wahlmeier.

Mario M. DeSantis, Jr. – age 88, of Hays, Kansas passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Hays

Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born January 3, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York.

He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, and was a cook for 20 years. He grew up and attended school in&nbsp;New York, lived in California for a number of years, and moved to Hays in 1985. 

Survivors include his son, Mario M. DeSantis III, of Hays.

&nbsp;A private inurnment at sea will be held&nbsp;at a later date.

Richard Henry Fields finished his work on earth July 29, 2023, at the age of 71. He was born December 12, 1951, to John Vernon and Hazel Irene (Anderson) Fields. His youth was spent accompanying his parents to various ranches as his dad worked at the ranch foreman and his mom the ranch cook, always returning home to northwest Kansas.

He graduated from Golden Plains High School in 1969. Following high school, he attended Kansas State University where he majored in agriculture and education while playing football until a knee injury ended his career.

He returned home where he met his future wife, Dixie Marie Black, through his best friend, Phil Wurm. They married December 14, 1973. To this union were born four children. Rick was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved working with the public in auto part sales first at S&amp;W and then at Stan’s Auto Parts. He never met a stranger and was always willing to give anyone a hard time. He was a voracious reader. He preferred books about American history, especially World War I. However, he would read anything with words be it books, magazines, encyclopedias, or parts manuals. Rick was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Irene Fields, infant sister Judith and brother Ray. He is survived by his wife, Dixie; daughters Tina (Tom) Benson and Deanna (Matt) Schmidtberger; sons Erik and David Fields; grandchildren Chance (JB) Benson, Tell (Jeri) Benson, Mo Jallow, Jaeger Thompson, Jake (Genna) Thompson, Mishaela (Harry) Benson, Jonah (Jaymee) Thompson, Job (Molly) Benson, Gabby Miller, Ricky Miller, Jayde Hastings, Ryker Schmidtberger, Ian Kramer, Seth Carlson, Elisa Fields and Thatcher Fields; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, KS. Joan Theresa (Bomberger) Stremel, known to everyone as Terry, was a compassionate and devoted mother. She passed away on May 25, 2023, at the age of 87 at Hopewest Hospice Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. She previously resided in Phoenix, Arizona. Several of her children were at her side. 

Terry was born on April 30, 1936, in Winslow, AZ to Kathryne Buck Bomberger and Elon H. Bomberger. 

Terry is survived by her brother, Richard Bomberger of Silver Spring MD, and her five children, Glen Stremel of Grand Junction, CO, Susan of Sun City, AZ, Theresa Englbrecht and her husband Tony of Grand Junction, CO, Steve Stremel and his wife Trisha of Wamego, KS, and Mic Stremel and his wife Sharon of Arvada, CO. “GT,” her given nickname for Grandma Terry, loved her three grandsons Joe, Gregory, and Jordan, and two granddaughters, Megan Thornton (Tyler) and Hannah Franklin (Eric). She was fortunate to meet her two sweet great-grandsons, Jaxson and Weston this past Christmas. She is also survived by her three nieces Kathryne, Shana and Kristina.

Terry dedicated her life to caring for others as a registered nurse. She worked until she was 67 years old, lastly for 19 years at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Her nurturing spirit and genuine empathy brought comfort to countless patients throughout her career. Joan's commitment to her profession was an inspiration to those around her, and her skillful care left a lasting impact on the lives she touched.

Though she was known for her quiet demeanor, Terry had a big heart that touched the lives of those who knew her. Her kindness and compassion were always evident, and she often went out of her way to help those in need. Terry's selflessness and gentle nature made her a cherished friend and confidante.
