Robert Allen Grizzle, 65, of Eudora, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.

Robert was born November 2, 1957, in Enid, Oklahoma.&nbsp; He was the son of Leon and Ernestine (Butler) Grizzle.&nbsp; The Grizzle family moved to Russell, Kansas when Robert was young.&nbsp; He grew up and attended schools in Russell.

Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Sauders on March 5, 1994, in Clearview City, Kansas. Robert was blessed with five children, Kevin, Carrie, Jamie, Rachel and Alan.

Robert was an independent drywaller.&nbsp; He worked in construction most of his life.&nbsp; While living in Eudora he worked for the Eudora High School as a janitor.&nbsp; He attended the Cornerstone Church and was active in the church’s youth programs.&nbsp; When he was younger, he served in the National Guard.&nbsp; He was a car enthusiast.&nbsp; Anything about cars he was interested in.&nbsp; Family was important and he enjoyed the times with his children and grandchildren.

Robert’s surviving family include his wife of 29 years, Dorothy of the home; daughters, Jamie Jones of Eudora, Kansas and Rachel Grizzle of Eudora, Kansas; sons, Kevin Grizzle (Brittinei) of Galena, Missouri and Alan Rhea of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brothers, Phillip Grizzle (Kim) of Russell, Kansas and Richard Grizzle of Hays, Kansas; sisters, Patricia Dillon of Russell, Kansas and Theresa Ehrlich (Ron) of Ellis, Kansas; four grandchildren, Adisyn Grizzle, Landon Lee, Asher Grizzle and Brynna Rhea.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Carrie Grizzle.

Celebration of Robert’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.&nbsp; Burial of Ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to service time, Thursday morning at the mortuary.&nbsp;

Donna was born May 4, 1956 in Phillipsburg, KS, the daughter of Duane and Darlene (Crawmer) Horn.

She was united in marriage to Mark Studley on October 3, 1980 in Phillipsburg, KS. &nbsp;He survives.

&nbsp; Ethan William Rohr, 18, of Colby, KS, died Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was born March 16, 2005, in Colby, KS. 

Ethan was a 2023 graduate of Colby High School, where he participated in FFA, tennis, powerlifting, played the trumpet in the school band, and later taught himself to play the cornet. Ethan enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and was always working on a project. Some of his more special pieces include a stand for his vinyl record collection and the sign that was displayed at the Colby Event Center when the CHS Pep Band played. Ethan took pride in the meticulous work he did. 

He worked cattle with his Uncle Mike, for Advantage Architectural Woodworking, and later for Orscheln Tractor Supply. 

Ethan was enrolled in Colby Community College where he planned to study sustainable/renewable energy and band; then transfer on to Fort Hays State University to pursue a degree in technical education. After completing his college education Ethan had a dream of pursuing a career in the Marines followed by becoming a high school woodshop teacher. Ethan was a known movie buff. He shared a love of music with his Grandpa Bill and was always assisting his Grandma Lisa with her projects. Ethan enjoyed “treasure hunting” at estate sales, garage sales, and auctions all over Kansas and Colorado with his mother Catherine.

He was a volunteer for Sons of the American Legion with his Uncle Mike and would happily wake up at 5 a.m. to assist with flags. He spent many hours BBQing with his Uncle Nick and was actively remodeling a building on his Uncle Chris’s property to turn it into his own workshop. Often Ethan could be found with his Uncle Geoffrey working on his truck’s stereo system. One of Ethan’s favorite things to do was visit his Uncle Anthony in the KC area where they enjoyed outdoor activities and projects around his house. Ethan also enjoyed shooting trap and going to the range whenever possible. When he was little, Ethan visited his Aunts Kimmie and Abi for trips to the zoo, museums, and just all-around good times. His brothers, Carter and Zakk, will miss his willingness to help them in any way he could. He was teaching Zakk to play the trumpet and to play tennis. Some other activities they enjoyed doing together included building Legos, playing video games, and watching movies. Most importantly, Ethan was a loving, caring, phenomenal soul with a genuine heart who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His family is blessed that he was able to be with them for the last 18 years. Ethan will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, sense of humor, contagious laugh, gracious acts, and kind words for everyone he met. Ethan was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Elmer and Irene Rohr and Thomas Mowry; and cousins Addison, Emori, and Graham Rohr and Peanut Richmeier. Arthur Lee “Art” Wilkens, of Stockton, KS, passed away on July 7, 2023, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, KS, at the age of 87. He was born on April 2, 1936, the third son of Charley and Jessie (Herren) Wilkens at the family farm home in Cheyenne County, KS. 

Art attended Walnut Grove country school through 8th grade, then Regis (a catholic boarding school) in Denver, CO his freshman year of high school. He then went to St. Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, KS for his sophomore year but graduated from McDonald Rural High in 1953. 

He married Mae Erdman on November 28, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Benkelman, NE. They were blessed with seven children: Chuck, Debra, Kent, Steven, Tony, Brenda, and Lisa.

After finishing school Art farmed north of Parks, NE on school land for a short period of time. He then bought and fed cattle at the Gabe Wilkens homestead. They moved to Benkelman, NE and then Goodland, KS in 1970 to haul sugar beets. Within a couple years he bought a hay grinder and did custom work grinding and hauling alfalfa and corn for farmers and feedlots. Within this business Art became determined to find a better way to haul hay. In his search for a solution, Art met Keith Foster, and the two became good friends. They continued a tremendous relationship through life. Soon he started putting Keith Walking Floors in his trailers. After admiring the work of Art and Keith, Jack Deroo told Art he owed it to himself and the rest of the hay grinding world to make these trailers. In 1985 Art bought an old, abandoned plant at Bloomington (Osborne), KS and renovated it to begin manufacturing trailers from scratch with Keith Walking Floors in them. He stayed at that location until his business expanded and he built a new plant south of Stockton in 1995. He established additional locations in Texas in 1996 and Pennsylvania in 2002. He was an innovator of the walking floor with many patents.

Art loved to fly. He was proud to have over 5,000 hours as pilot in command. He also loved to send his brother and best friend, Jim, to auctions to collect Diamond T Trucks and antique tractors. Art would display his collection in Bird City, KS at the annual Tri-State Antique Threshers Show with great joy.

Art was a driven man who was always moving forward, never letting anything stand in his way. As a straight-forward man, you always knew where you stood. His commitment to his faith, and love and service to his family, friends, and community knew no bounds. Art taught us by his daily example that a dream does not become reality through magic—it takes sweat, determination, hard work, and the help of our Good Lord. He will be remembered in love.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton, KS. Burial will be at 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. mountain time) at Goodland City Cemetery in Goodland, Kansas. Visitation will be Wednesday 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church with a Parish Vigil Service and Rosary at 7:00 p.m.

James Ashbaugh, 68, of Park, Kansas, passed away on July 9, 2023. James was born in Quinter, KS, on December 24, 1954. He graduated from Wheatland High School and continued on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University.

Jim worked for Jack’s Repair Shop after retiring. 

He enjoyed his numerous house plants, aviation, being an avid UFO follower, riding his Harley with friends, and spending time with his family. Jim enjoyed going to gun and coin shows with friends. He was known for his big heart and didn’t know a stranger. Jim took pride in his family. Jim was planning a trip to Sturgis as a bucket list item this summer with his best friend Joe Waldman, who was like a brother. Jim enjoyed taking family and friends up for quick flights around just for fun and to check crops.

James is survived by John Ashbaugh (Hoxie), Alex Ashbaugh (Hays), Kathy and husband Ramon Cunningham (Schuyler, NE), Joe Ashbaugh (Park), Ron and wife Judy Ashbaugh (Melrose, NM), Diane Ashbaugh (Oakley), Michaell Ashbaugh (Quinter), Manuel Ashbaugh (Jacksonville, FL), and Elizabeth and husband Edmund McDonald (Park), along with many nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Emald and Teresa Ashbaugh, and sisters Veronica Brown, Darlene Ashbaugh, Patricia Meyers, and Dorothy Schwindt, &nbsp;along with other family members.

A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on July 14, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS. Father James will be officiating. Inurnment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

On Saturday, July 1, 2023, our beloved mother, Vickie Lynn Steinle of Dorrance, KS, age 77, passed away peacefully with her sons by her side after a long hard battle with cancer. She was born on February 23, 1946, to Vernon L. and Edna A. (Schmidt) Dumler in Russell, KS. 

She was united in marriage to Marlyn D. Steinle on May 29, 1965. They made their home in Dorrance, Ks, and were blessed with four sons, Brent, Brian, Todd, and Kendall.

Vickie was a devoted mother/housewife, while her children were young. 

Later in life, she worked for Wilson Rehab Center as a custodian for 20+ years. She retired in housekeeping at the Great Bend Health and Rehab nursing home. After retirement, she went to work for USD 407 as a custodian and continued until her illness no longer allowed her. 

She was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church in Dorrance, Ks, and served on the church council as well as WELCA.

Vickie truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, cooking, chatting with her sisters, working in her yard, and spending time with her family and her beloved dog, Rodney. Vickie always had a smile even on her darkest days; she brought joy to many no matter where she went.

Vickie leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that no one could match.

Neal Scott Panning, 40, passed away July 3, 2023, at his home, rural Great Bend. &nbsp;He was born Oct. 31, 1982, in Great Bend, to Marvin and Debra (Schartz) Panning.

A previous Ellinwood resident currently residing in rural Great Bend, Neal was a graduate of Ellinwood High School. &nbsp;He furthered his education at Wichita State University, majoring in piano. &nbsp;

As a talented musician, Neal was a winner of the Parnassus contest one of the years he competed in annually during high school and later participated in the Wichita State University honor choir. 

Neal was also known to be a skilled cook, being able to make “something” out of “anything.” He was an area restaurant employee for many years, currently working as a waiter at Los Cabos Fajita House, Great Bend. &nbsp;

Neal’s true loves were playing the piano and organ, his dog, Indie, gardening, and time spent with friends.

Neal is survived by his parents, Marvin and Debra Panning and a brother, Ross, all of rural Great Bend. &nbsp;Other survivors include his aunts and uncles Doug and Joan Panning and family, Diane (Schartz) and Dennis Jackson and family, Brian and Sharon Schartz and family, Gary and Kim Schartz and family, and Brenda (Schartz) and Jim Tucker and family. &nbsp;

Neal Scott Panning

Terry Lynn Richmeier lived a life centered around what was most important to him – his family.&nbsp; While always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or stranger, Terry’s pure and genuine soul was undeniable for anyone who got to know him.&nbsp; On July 7, 2023, Terry passed away at his home, after a short but brave journey with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born April 29, 1956, to Elmer and Kathryn (Hacker) Richmeier, Terry was the only brother in a house full of five sisters. He found joy with his dad on the farm by helping out with the cattle or fixing anything that needed attention. When he wasn’t on the farm, you could find him at Holcomb High School (a graduate of ’74) with a ball in his hand playing basketball or football.

Serving others was one of his life purposes and in 1976, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.&nbsp; Serving his country was his duty, but joining the softball team there allowed him to find his lifetime hobby.&nbsp; For work, Terry did it all – working on the farm, being a cowboy, driving a truck and raising cattle. When he wasn’t working, he found the most peaceful time to be on his boat. Terry was a collector and found beauty and life in all things both old and new. He enjoyed time at the bowling alley, and when at home, his energy was spent on making his yard beautiful. Although a man of few words, anyone who knew Terry knew that he would be quick to offer words of advice or encouragement when needed.

Terry welcomed his first child, a son. Those who were lucky enough to know both of them would agree the two of them are similar in looks, personality and interests – specifically a love for cattle.

On July 20, 1982, he married his “pretty woman," Tracey Holloway.&nbsp; Their love of sports deepened their bond as they played on many coed volleyball and softball teams. They traveled and lived in Fort Meyers, Fla., and Garden City before setting roots in Scott City. Together, their love was strengthened after the births of their three daughters. Raising his girls turned Terry into a youth volleyball coach, a strong supporter of Scott City athletics and the best wedding dance partner. With all his daughters involved, it was a balancing act between work and their activities, but he was always, always there.&nbsp;

Of all the jobs Terry had, being a grandpa brought him the greatest life joy. His nine grandkids knew that mom and dad’s rules didn’t exist when grandpa was around.&nbsp; To see a smile on their face, he would do anything. He was intentional with his time with them. Quick to take them to the lake or park, they knew grandpa time would always be memorable. As his grandkids got older, he continued to balance work with sporting events.&nbsp; He was their loudest cheerleader. In his final days, Terry continued to put his grandkids first – reminding his daughters to continue to be good moms to them. He loved them deeply.

When flowers bloom, when you find the empty seat in the bleachers, and when you hear the peacefulness of the lake, you will know that Terry’s spirit is living with us forever.

Terry is survived by his wife, Tracey (Holloway) Richmeier; a son Shannon (Zandrea) Ardery; three daughters Megan (Brian) Gentry, Morgan Welsh, and Mindi (Sean) Dreiling; as well as nine grandchildren: Kendall, Peyton, Mackenzi, Josslyn, Everleigh, Blakely, Jordyn, Chauncey, and Carter.&nbsp; Terry is also survived by his five sisters Deann (David) Crase, Sherry Nichols, Rebecca Greenwood, Debbie Richmeier and Janet (Richard) Knoll.

Terry was preceded in death by his dad Elmer Richmeier, his mom Kathyryn (Hacker) Richmeier and an infant daughter, Brandy.

The family would like to welcome friends and loved ones of Terry to a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14 at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, with the Rev. Jeff Goetzinger and Don Williams presiding.

Immediately following the service, the inurnment will be in the Scott County Cemetery.

Terry Lynn Richmeier lived a life centered around what was most important to him – his family.&nbsp; While always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or stranger, Terry’s pure and genuine soul was undeniable for anyone who got to know him.&nbsp; On July 7, 2023, Terry passed away at his home, after a short but brave journey with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.<figure>

 </figure>A simple man.Born April 29, 1956, to Elmer and Kathryn (Hacker) Richmeier, Terry was the only brother in a house full of five sisters. He found joy with his dad on the farm by helping out with the cattle or fixing anything that needed attention. When he wasn’t on the farm, you could find him at Holcomb High School (a graduate of ’74) with a ball in his hand playing basketball or football.A simple man.Serving others was one of his life purposes and in 1976, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.&nbsp; Serving his country was his duty, but joining the softball team there allowed him to find his lifetime hobby.&nbsp; For work, Terry did it all – working on the farm, being a cowboy, driving a truck and raising cattle. When he wasn’t working, he found the most peaceful time to be on his boat. Terry was a collector and found beauty and life in all things both old and new. He enjoyed time at the bowling alley, and when at home, his energy was spent on making his yard beautiful. Although a man of few words, anyone who knew Terry knew that he would be quick to offer words of advice or encouragement when needed.A simple man.Terry welcomed his first child, a son. Those who were lucky enough to know both of them would agree the two of them are similar in looks, personality and interests – specifically a love for cattle.A simple man.On July 20, 1982, he married his “pretty woman," Tracey Holloway.&nbsp; Their love of sports deepened their bond as they played on many coed volleyball and softball teams. They traveled and lived in Fort Meyers, Fla., and Garden City before setting roots in Scott City. Together, their love was strengthened after the births of their three daughters. Raising his girls turned Terry into a youth volleyball coach, a strong supporter of Scott City athletics and the best wedding dance partner. With all his daughters involved, it was a balancing act between work and their activities, but he was always, always there.&nbsp;A simple man.Of all the jobs Terry had, being a grandpa brought him the greatest life joy. His nine grandkids knew that mom and dad’s rules didn’t exist when grandpa was around.&nbsp; To see a smile on their face, he would do anything. He was intentional with his time with them. Quick to take them to the lake or park, they knew grandpa time would always be memorable. As his grandkids got older, he continued to balance work with sporting events.&nbsp; He was their loudest cheerleader. In his final days, Terry continued to put his grandkids first – reminding his daughters to continue to be good moms to them. He loved them deeply.A simple man.When flowers bloom, when you find the empty seat in the bleachers, and when you hear the peacefulness of the lake, you will know that Terry’s spirit is living with us forever.Terry is survived by his wife, Tracey (Holloway) Richmeier; a son Shannon (Zandrea) Ardery; three daughters Megan (Brian) Gentry, Morgan Welsh, and Mindi (Sean) Dreiling; as well as nine grandchildren: Kendall, Peyton, Mackenzi, Josslyn, Everleigh, Blakely, Jordyn, Chauncey, and Carter.&nbsp; Terry is also survived by his five sisters Deann (David) Crase, Sherry Nichols, Rebecca Greenwood, Debbie Richmeier and Janet (Richard) Knoll.Terry was preceded in death by his dad Elmer Richmeier, his mom Kathyryn (Hacker) Richmeier and an infant daughter, Brandy.The family would like to welcome friends and loved ones of Terry to a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14 at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, with the Rev. Carole Ann Zerr, age 85, of Quinter, KS, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the Sheridan County Hospital, Hoxie&nbsp; Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 10th at the Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Burial will take place at the Baker Township Cemetery in Quinter immediately following the service. Lunch will be served directly following the service at the Eagles Lodge in WaKeeney.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Garry Zerr, parents Laurence and Elba Berry, sisters Audine (Dale) Richards, Donna (Jim) Dugan, and brother Larry (Reva) Berry. A favorite pastime of hers was bowling. She bowled in local leagues for many years and traveled to state tournaments with her teams across Kansas and even went on a trip to Reno, Nev. for the nationals by train. One of the highlights of her bowling career was when she received her Grand Duchess pin at state for still bowling at the age of 70.&nbsp;

From a young age, Carole worked at her parents’ restaurants in Quinter and Plainville. She also spent many years as a cook and waitress in restaurants around WaKeeney.&nbsp;

Carole was always glad when her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit her. She’d always try and find something to feed them. They all loved it when she cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and boy could she make awesome pies!

Kenneth&nbsp;McClure, age 82, of Stockton, died July 5, 2023, at the McPherson Hospital in McPherson.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1940, in Phillipsburg to Woodrow and Beulah Leota (Meracle)&nbsp;McClure.

Kenneth and his sister, Betty, were raised on the family farm west of Phillipsburg where he learned the value of hard work.

He attended country school in Phillips County and furthered his education at Phillipsburg High School, joining the U.S. Army soon after his 18th birthday. His Army and Kansas Army National Guard tenure lasted eight years.

One of the many highlights of his life happened in 1963 when he met and married Brenda Joan (Elliott)&nbsp;McClure, and from this union, they were blessed with two children: Jo Ann and&nbsp;Jeffrey  Lee.

Ken worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation in Rooks and Phillips Counties for 34 years, while also farming and ranching in Phillips County. He retired from K-DOT in 2000 but never retired from farming and ranching – raising wheat and cattle in Rooks and Phillips counties to his dying day.

The family moved to Stockton from Phillipsburg in 1971 while Ken was working for K-DOT.

Kenneth is survived by his wife: Brenda, of the home; daughter: Jo Ann, Salina; son: Jeffrey and wife Julie and granddaughter, Bailey, McPherson; sister: Betty Miller, Shawnee; brother-in-law: William Elliott, Glade; together with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law: Barbara Pfannenstiel, and brother-in-law: Lyman Miller.

Graveside services, inclusive of Military Honors, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 15 in the Stockton Cemetery – Webster Addition, 300 N. Water St., Stockton, KS 67669.

John Calvin Haverfield of Russell Springs passed away on July 4, 2023. Calvin was born in Scott City on July 28, 1958. One of five children born to Larry Luke Haverfield and Elizabeth Dawn Haverfield, Calvin took great pride in carrying on his late father’s legacy through his hard work and dedication on the family ranch, working alongside his lifelong business partner, his little brother, Jay Haverfield. 

He was an example of true stewardship to his land and cattle, working closely with Audobon of Kansas and the Defenders of the Wildlife. Calvin married the love of his life, Lillie Herrera, on May 15, 1992, and together they raised four children: Rene Junior, Krystal Rene, MyKel John, and AmmahRye Jeslie.

Calvin and Lillie were blessed with 12 grandchildren who kept them busy between basketball games, wrestling and various activities. Calvin was a loving and devoted husband and father who put his family first. He was active in his community taking on roles such as volunteer firefighter, young men’s leader and active member of the LDS church.

Calvin was welcoming to all with his authentic and gentle persona, warm smile, contagious laugh and wonderful sense of humor. He always gave the time and attention to make people feel genuinely loved and cared for, forever offering a listening ear and helping hand. You could catch Calvin in his spare time with a book in hand. He loved reading and his collection of books.

Calvin treasured his faith and lived to serve his family and community, he was a Bishop in the Scott City ward and will be dearly missed by his church family. Calvin’s presence will be fondly remembered by his loved ones in the Kansas sunrise as it stretches across the ranch he loved most, in the sounds, the smells, and the colors across the vast and beautiful Kansas prairie. Calvin was preceded in death by his father, Larry Haverfield and other extended family members. Michael Clark Whisler, 67, of Russell, died on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at his home in Russell.

Michael was born on Jan. 5, 1956, in Russell, the son of Francis Clark and Patricia Lew (Brockett) Whisler. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. After high school, he attended Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas. Michael moved around for several years before settling in Arizona where he worked for the forestry department building trails and fighting fires.

About 20 years ago, he moved back to Russell, where he made his permanent home and was a self-employed painter in Russell and the surrounding area. He enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, collecting rocks, geology, golf, woodworking, fishing, growing sunflowers, and playing and listening to music.

His surviving family includes his daughter Jessica Cunningham and husband Brent of Glen Elder; sister Susan Albers and husband Fred of Overland Park; and grandchildren Drew, Tanna and Bailee Cunningham. He leaves a niece, Holly Albers; nephew Jordan Albers; and a great-nephew, Maddox, all in the Kansas City area. He also leaves special aunts and many dear cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering service to celebrate Michael’s life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.

Michael Clark Whisler

Betty L. Ryan, 88, departed this life on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, surrounded by family after struggling with illness. She was born on a farm north of Hoxie on Oct. 21, 1934, in Sheridan County, the daughter of Obie Alton and Florence Bell Long Martin. &nbsp;

Betty was the middle child and praised her mother for making a nice, loving home for her and her older brother and younger sister. Her grandparents, whom she loved deeply, lived close to the family farm. At age 12, her father was injured, which required her to start working with her mother hanging wallpaper. While she was in high school, she continued to work at local cafes.

Through a cousin of hers, she met Carrol “Andy” Anderson of Penokee.&nbsp; They fell in love and were married on July 22, 1950, by a Methodist preacher where she went to Sunday school as a child. They moved to Colby, and four daughters were born to them—Dana, Delinda, Debbie and Denise.&nbsp; She enjoyed nothing more than making a good home for her family.&nbsp; In 1962, the family moved to Scott City, a place she called home.&nbsp; In 1965, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was baptized.&nbsp; She committed her entire life to serving the Lord and became active in the church throughout those years. She loved singing, teaching, serving on the church board and being a hostess to many.

In 1977, she found herself single and in a working world. During that time, she met Eugene Ryan and they were married on Feb. 17, 1984, in Scott City. This year they celebrated 39 years of marriage. She worked at the Security State Bank in Scott City for 23 years and retired in 1999.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a past member of the Church of the Nazarene both of Scott City.

Survivors include her husband - Eugene P. Ryan of Scott City; three daughters - Dana &amp; Steve Edwards of Scott City, Debbie Kirk of Enid, Okla., Denise and Steve Wishon of Lawrence; one son-in-law - Max Edwards of Scott City; one sister - Bea Rasmussen of South Charleston, W.V.; one half sister - Esther and James Armknecht of Dighton; nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-children - Dave and Jeanie Ryan, Debbie and Jon Bratt, Melody and Melvin Rogers, 25 step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren.

Betty L. Ryan, 88, departed this life on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, surrounded by family after struggling with illness. She was born on a farm north of Hoxie on Oct. 21, 1934, in Sheridan County, the daughter of Obie Alton and Florence Bell Long Martin. &nbsp;<figure>

Her grandparents, whom she loved deeply, lived close to the family farm. At age 12, her father was injured, which required her to start working with her mother hanging wallpaper. While she was in high school, she continued to work at local cafes.Through a cousin of hers, she met Carrol “Andy” Anderson of Penokee.&nbsp; They fell in love and were married on July 22, 1950, by a Methodist preacher where she went to Sunday school as a child. They moved to Colby, and four daughters were born to them—Dana, Delinda, Debbie and Denise.&nbsp; She enjoyed nothing more than making a good home for her family.&nbsp; In 1962, the family moved to Scott City, a place she called home.&nbsp; In 1965, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was baptized.&nbsp; She committed her entire life to serving the Lord and became active in the church throughout those years. She loved singing, teaching, serving on the church board and being a hostess to many.In 1977, she found herself single and in a working world. During that time, she met Eugene Ryan and they were married on Feb. 17, 1984, in Scott City. This year they celebrated 39 years of marriage. She worked at the Security State Bank in Scott City for 23 years and retired in 1999.She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a past member of the Church of the Nazarene both of Scott City.Survivors include her husband - Eugene P. Clarence Justin “Bud” Redman, age 84, of Syracuse, died July 3, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on March 17, 1939, in Emporia, the son of Clarence Christopher and Helen Elizabeth (Sutton) Redman. Bud grew up in Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School. He continued his education at Emporia State University, where he earned a master’s degree in business education and an education specialist degree and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.

Bud married Ann Watson on Aug. 21, 1965, in Syracuse. He taught business classes at USD 494 Syracuse High School from 1962 until 1999 when he retired. He owned Specialty Photo, a sign shop, and painting business for many years. He was a member of and served on many boards including the Chamber of Commerce, USD 494 Syracuse Board of Education, Park Board, National Business Teachers Association, and KNEA. He enjoyed running the school concession stand, volunteering at the Veteran’s Memorial at the Syracuse Cemetery, and continually helping others in the community. Survivors include his wife, Ann, of their home; son, Chris Redman and wife Monica of Olathe; daughter, Pam Hubbard and husband Wes of Wichita; sister, Barbara Younger of Emporia; five grandchildren, Michelle Langehennig and husband Dustin, Jace Coleman, Andie Coleman, Jayden Davis and Tara Redman; and two great-grandchildren, Madden and Rory Langehennig. Phil A. Maddux, 88, died on July 5, 2023, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. He was born on Nov. 9, 1934, in Garden City, the son of Anson C. and Christabelle (Downing) Maddux. In his early years, his family lived in Holcomb before moving to the family farm north of Deerfield, where he graduated from high school in 1952. He married Arlene (Chain) Webb on March 22, 1990, and spent the remainder of his life spoiling her.

Phil knew from a young age that farming was his passion. He was able to continue farming after high school with his father and uncle on the family farm and later continued the tradition with his two sons and their families. He joined the Garden City Army Reserve in 1958 and remained a member until 1963, receiving honors as an Outstanding Instructor in 1961. In 1983, he was one of four farmers who purchased Sante Fe Motors in Deerfield, which was renamed Deerfield Ag, to allow local farmers to continue to purchase equipment and parts locally. One would rarely see Phil without his furry four-legged companions. He had many dogs over the years and each one was always his self-proclaimed best dog in the world. He was known by many of his love for dogs and how well his four-legged friends were treated, oftentimes riding in the passenger seat of the pickup, getting fed from the table, and even having fans and air conditioning where they slept so they didn’t get too hot. His dogs often had claimed the passenger seat of his pickup as their own and if you were to ride with him, you may end up with a golden retriever in your lap with their head out the window because you were, after all, sitting in their seat. The one thing that Phil loved more than his dogs and farming was his family and people. He absolutely adored his wife and family and traveled many miles over the years watching his kids and grandkids play sports and participate in other activities. He believed in an honest day’s work, and you would struggle to find someone who could work harder. Although laziness was one of his pet peeves, he was still willing to help anyone that needed it and believed that you should love everybody. He never met a stranger and would sit and visit with anyone anywhere, sometimes for much longer than they had probably expected as he certainly had the gift of gab. He always wanted everyone to be “happy, happy, happy.” Phil is survived by his loving family including his wife, Arlene Maddux; two sons Kirk (Kim) Maddux and Kent (Diane) Maddux; one daughter Jana (Randy) Dietz; stepson Jerrad (Kim) Webb; step-daughter Jessica (Colby) Katz; sister LeRoyce Maddux; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson Garrett Maddux, great-granddaughter Raelyn Maddux and his brother Lyle Maddux. Curtis Watts, 76, died July 5, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital ER, Hoisington. He was born Aug. 22, 1946, in Bennington, the son of Raymond L. and Phyllis J. (Collins) Watts. Curtis graduated from Bennington High School in 1964.&nbsp;

On July 7, 1973, he married Roberta Ott, in Gypsum.&nbsp;

Curtis was the owner and operator of Watts Siding for many years. He later decided to change occupations and took up truck driving, a profession he thoroughly enjoyed. He drove over the road for many years for Kindsvater Trucking out of Dodge City, retiring in 2012. He also loved driving a harvest truck for Hoffman Farms and was looking forward to the upcoming fall harvest. Curtis and Roberta loved traveling in their RV, spending time in Branson, and trips with the Newmar Kountry Klub. They were also lifetime members of the Good Sam Camping Club. When they weren’t traveling they enjoyed attending the Golden Belt Community Concerts and cheering on his favorite Nascar drivers, especially the Earnhardt teams.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roberta Watts of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Phyllis Watts.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 10, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding.

Randall R. “Randy” Schmidt, 67, Hays, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

He was born Jan. 15, 1956, in Hays, the son of Alfred L. and Mary K. (House) Schmidt.&nbsp; While growing up, he attended St. Joseph Grade School, Kennedy Middle School, Thomas More Prep High School, and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Park College, a master’s degree from Webster University, and attended Oklahoma State University.

From 1973 to 1996, Randy served in the U.S. Air Force, where he enlisted five ranks and commissioned five ranks, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.&nbsp; He was a Desert Storm veteran and served as a civilian in Korea, the Republic of Georgia, Bosnia, the Netherlands and Kosovo. Randy was a weapons systems officer, a member of the Mach 2 Club, and a flight instructor at the Air Force Academy. He enjoyed flying, motorcycle riding, RV trips, Florida’s Space Coast, and in April, achieving his goal of seeing the Holy Land.&nbsp; Randy loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his son, Aaron Schmidt (Kara Holland) of Fredericksburg, Va., two daughters, Dr. Katherine Schmidt of Queens, N.Y., and Lauren Daniels (James) of Glen Allen, Va., three brothers, Larry Schmidt (Melea), Dan Schmidt (Connie), and John Schmidt (Dana), all of Hays, a sister, Karla Ruder (John) of Plainville, three grandchildren, Bennett Daniels, Luka Schmidt, and Aubrey Daniels, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Mike and Joe Schmidt.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Military honors by the Hays VFW Post 9076 Honor Guard will follow.

Randall R. 'Randy' Schmidt

Cheryl Long, 77, of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Banner Elk, N.C., passed away at Boca Regional Hospital on June&nbsp;&nbsp; 17, 2023.

Born Nov. 4, 1945, in Hays, to Lester and Beulah (North) Irvin, Cheryl spent her childhood outside of Hays on her parents' farm, where her never-ending love of the land was rooted. She graduated from Hays High School in 1963. It was there and at Hays United Methodist Church that she and her future husband, James, began to share their lifelong passion for music.

She then attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. On July 21 of that year, she married James Allen Long—a marriage that lasted just one month shy of their 55th anniversary.

After graduate studies in Bloomington, Ind., Cheryl and Jim moved to Broward County, Fla., in 1973 where they resided until they relocated to Palm Beach County in 2013. It was then they began to split their time between homes in Boynton Beach and Banner Elk.

During their 40 years in Broward County, Cheryl established a private voice studio, becoming a highly sought out teacher, adjudicator and clinician. Many of her students went on to achieve notable successes as teachers/educators, performers in regional and Broadway musical productions, and at national and international concert venues.

Following retirement as a voice teacher in 2013, Cheryl successfully channeled her artistry into the painting medium, particularly watercolor. Her unique expressions were on display in galleries in Banner Elk.

 </figure>Born Nov. 4, 1945, in Hays, to Lester and Beulah (North) Irvin, Cheryl spent her childhood outside of Hays on her parents' farm, where her never-ending love of the land was rooted. She graduated from Hays High School in 1963. It was there and at Hays United Methodist Church that she and her future husband, James, began to share their lifelong passion for music.She then attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. On July 21 of that year, she married James Allen Long—a marriage that lasted just one month shy of their 55th anniversary.After graduate studies in Bloomington, Ind., Cheryl and Jim moved to Broward County, Fla., in 1973 where they resided until they relocated to Palm Beach County in 2013. It was then they began to split their time between homes in Boynton Beach and Banner Elk.During their 40 years in Broward County, Cheryl established a private voice studio, becoming a highly sought out teacher, adjudicator and clinician. Many of her students went on to achieve notable successes as teachers/educators, performers in regional and Broadway musical productions, and at national and international concert venues.Following retirement as a voice teacher in 2013, Cheryl successfully channeled her artistry into the painting medium, particularly watercolor. Her unique expressions were on display in galleries in Banner Elk.Cheryl had a deep abiding faith, which was daily reflected in her actions with those who came to know and love her. Proceeding in her death were her parents and her brother, Stanley. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James, sons Craig, his wife Carolyn and precious granddaughter Megan of Boynton Beach, and Douglas of New York City, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.A memorial Service will be at Church of the Palms, 1960 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach at 11 a.m. July 15. A subsequent service will be at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church at a later date.
