It is with heavy hearts that we announce Jeff Baczkowski of Hays, a beloved son, father, brother, friend, and enthusiast of life, left this world on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, in Brighton, Colo. Born in Hays on March 24, 1976, to Pierre Charles “Skip” Baczkowski and Karen Ann Jacobs. Jeff was 47 years old. He departed way too soon, but the memories he leaves behind will forever make us smile.

He worked at DSNWK as a social worker for over 10 years. He attended TMP-Marian High School, was a 1994 graduate of Shawnee Mission North-West High School, and was a graduate of Fort Hays State University and made his home in Hays.

Jeff spent much of his youth in Pfeifer, riding through town on go-karts and delivering diesel with his grandfather Alfred. He spent time in Lawrence at KU and made some other stops along the way before returning home to Hays. He was a passionate soul who knew how to savor every moment. Jeff’s love for music, sports and the next great adventure were a testament to his vibrant spirit.

Music was the passion of Jeff's life. He attended hundreds if not thousands of live concerts. His enthusiasm for music was infectious, and he had a knack for making connections through the power of a shared tune.

Jeff cheered passionately for all “his” teams, whether at Allen Fieldhouse, Arrowhead, Kaufman or the comfort of his own home. Yet, for all his love of music and sports, Jeff's heart truly found its greatest joy in the company of his family and friends. He cherished every moment spent with them and his eyes lit up retelling stories of past times together. Jeff was a doting father. He loved his boys and was incredibly proud of their many accomplishments.

Jeff leaves behind a legacy of passion, friendship and zest for life. He taught us to appreciate every note of music, every game, every meal and every minute spent together. His warm smile, hearty laughter and generous spirit brought light into the lives of all who knew him.

Jeff is survived by his sons, Brooks Baczkowski and Brody Baczkowski, both of Hays; his Father, P. C. “Skip” Baczkowski and wife Susan of Stockton, M0.;&nbsp; his brother, Nathan Baczkowski and Erin Wagner, of Hays; his nephew, Cohen Baczkowski, of Hays; his uncles, Fred Jacobs and wife, Jane, Louisville, Ky.; Tim Jacobs and wife, Joyce, Olathe; Jean Baczkowski and wife, Ruth, Valley Center; Theo Baczkowski, Dighton; Richard Baxter, Great Bend, his aunt, Stacy Miller and husband, John, Kansas City, Mo.; his step-grandmother, Virginia “Jeannie” Jacobs; his children’s mother, Kayla Diehl, of Hays; step-brother, Travis Votaw and wife, Penny of Lansing; step-niece, Kirsten Smallwood and husband, Ryan of Manhattan; step-sister, Sara August and husband, Brad of Lansing; step-niece, Lillian August of Lansing; and a host of extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen; his grandparents, Jean and Jeanne Baczkowski; Alfred and Rita Jacobs; aunts Fifi Baxter and Ilo Baczkowski.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 13th and Ash, Hays, with Father Rich Daise officiating. A private family Inurnment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pfeifer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, at. St. Joseph Catholic Church. A vigil service and Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

We will gather to remember and celebrate a well-lived life, that continues to inspire us to savor every moment. Jeff will be dearly missed but fondly remembered as a man who embraced life with open arms and an open heart.

Steve Alan Zeigler, age 69, of Goodland passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023. Steve was born May 5, 1954, to William A. and Ila D. (Smith) Zeigler in El Paso, Texas. He grew up and went to school in Goodland, graduating from Goodland High School in 1973. Steve attended Northwest Kansas Technical College Autobody Program.

Steve worked in auto repair in Colorado Springs for many years before returning to Goodland to be closer to his family. He worked as a custodian for Goodland USD 352 for 18 years and retired in 2016. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Goodland, Colorado Motorcycle Association God’s Road Warriors of Colorado Springs and Goodland Elks Lodge member. Steve enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing Bingo and spending time with his family and friends.

Steve is survived by his Aunt Dorothy Roeder and Uncle and Aunt Donald and Bonnie Smith of Goodland; Aunt Annabelle McDaniel of Scott City; many cousins; best friend Charlotte Hankins and her sons Marvin and Brent; and many more friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, and brother Jerry.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, mountain time, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 222 W. 13th&nbsp;St., Goodland. Charles Edward Rebarchek of Grinnell passed away Aug. 18, 2023, at the Logan Countyenior Living in Oakley. Charles, aka Chuck, was born March 17, 1957, in Scott City, to Milton Rebarchek and Norma (Russell) Rebarchek.

He grew up at Grinnell and attended school at Grinnell and Healy. After graduating from Healy High School, he joined the Marines, serving from 1978 to 1981. After returning home, he lived and worked in western Kansas until 1984. At this time, he moved to Ohio. In May 2017, Chuck moved back to Gove County to spend more time with his father and siblings. He loved to garden, fish and play cards.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Norma (Russell) Rebarchek; grandparents Amil and Carrie (George) Rebarchek and Charlie and Julia (Ragsdale) Russell; brothers Eugene Rebarchek and Kenneth Rebarchek; infant sister Frances Rebarchek; brother-in-laws Robert Bland and Jerry Yates; sister-in-law Pamela (Pearson) Rebarchek; and grandsons Donavan Rebarchek and Devin Wallen.

Roy L. Case, 86, Hays, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

Roy was born June 17, 1937, in Ponca City, Okla., the son of Robert L. and Sylvia (Moon) Case.

He attended rural Kay County, Oklahoma, schools, graduating from Kaw City High School, Kaw City, Okla. He then furthered his education at Northern Oklahoma College, Tonkawa, Okla., and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla., graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology.

He was a resident of Hays for 20 years, moving from Garden City. While attending college, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad switching cars. He worked for Baroid Well Logging Service traveling to many locations in the United States; Cities Service, Medicine Lodge and Rawlins, Wyo. and Champlin Pet Company, Garden City and Hays before his retirement.

On Jan. 19, 1963, he married Judith K. Kober at Medicine Lodge. &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Judith Case, Hays; two children, Tonya Norton (Doug), Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nicholas Case (Roxann), Carlsbad, N. M., three grandchildren, Joshua, Camden, and Shea Case; three nieces, Janie McGuire (Jim), Rosemary Harader (Danny), and Ruthie Hazaleus; and many great nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Roberta Hazaleus, and Betty Case.

Roy had a deep and devoted love for his family. He doted on his children, especially his three grandchildren, Joshua, Camden, and Shea. Roy was an avid outdoorsman and loved raising cattle in Medicine Lodge, gardening, and spending time at the farm. He was passionate about rockhounding, hunting, and fishing. He especially enjoyed exploring new places, antiquing, hunting fossils and spending time in their vacation home in Salida, Colo.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, from 1 to 1:50 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with Pastor Scott Tempero officiating.&nbsp; The interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse.

NORTON—Norton resident, Curtis J. Glenn, passed away on Aug. 29, 2023, at the age of 69.

Curtis Joy Glenn was born in Norton to Joy and Gladys (Albin) Glenn.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joy and Gladys Glenn, brother John Glenn, and nephew Matthew Glenn.

Survivors include his brothers Eric Glenn and wife Brenda of Norton, and Randy Glenn and wife Denise of Manhattan, Kan.; companion Lydia Dunque of Norton; and sister-in-law Karen Glenn of Norton.

Georgia Maxine Matthies Carlson, Scott City&nbsp;

Georgia Maxine Matthies Carlson, age 92, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on January 26, 1931, in Dighton, Kansas, the daughter of George R. and Lota Owen McCoy. 

A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1966, moving from Dighton, Kansas, she worked in sales at JM McDonald, and Whitings throughout her life.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On June 26, 1949, She married Robert D. Matthies in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on September 28, 1984, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughters - Janet and George Tecklenburg of Hutchinson, Kansas, Kim and Mike Musick of Weatherford, Texas, son - Craig and Marcia Matthies of Scott City, Kansas, sister - Charlene Dowell of Dighton, Kansas, seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters, and one grandson - Lucas Matthies.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Scott Wagner presiding.

A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1966, moving from Dighton, Kansas, she worked in sales at JM McDonald, and Whitings throughout her life.She was a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas.On June 26, 1949, She married Robert D. LaCROSSE—Betty J. Misegadis, 90, Rush Center, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse.

Betty was born May 3, 1933, in rural Rush Center, the daughter of Fredrick Samuel “Fred” and Frances Josephine “Fanny” (Schreiber) Keener. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1951 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Betty was a homemaker and farm wife. &nbsp;Along with her husband, Dean, they owned and operated Dean’s TV &amp; Appliance, Rush Center and La Crosse. They also owned and operated the cable TV system in McCracken.&nbsp;

Betty loved being involved in her community. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, WELCA, Hope Lutheran Church Council, Hope Lutheran Church Quilt Club, and the Walnut Valley Saddle Club, all of Rush Center. She was the last charter member of the Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center. She was a member of the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and the La Crosse Booster Club, both of La Crosse. She was a 4-H leader. Her unit could be found for many years manning the horticulture booth at the Rush County Fair. She loved holidays and was very proud of the Pride Park tree that she was instrumental in planting, which is decorated every year with lights for Christmas.

On April 24, 1952, she married Dean Misegadis at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center. He preceded her in death April 21, 2014.

Survivors include her children, Lois Misegadis and her husband, Michael James, Ottawa, Darlene Misegadis, Rush Center, and Steve Misegadis and his wife, Kimberley Brand, Lenexa; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, William “Bill” Keener, Samuel George Keener, and Ray “Pete” Keener.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. &nbsp;

Church visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center.

Sandra Kay (Nuss) Brown, 76, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Sandra was born February 20, 1947, in Hoisington, Kansas. She was the daughter of Milton and Edna (Maier) Nuss. She grew up in the Susank and Hoisington areas.

Sandra was united in marriage to John Brown on October 16, 1964, in Great Bend, Kansas. From this union they were blessed with two daughter, Misty and Melodie. They were divorced later in life.

Sandra cleaned homes and offices in Russell for over 40 years. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, mowing, spending time at the lake, spending time with her grandsons and loved caring for her animals.

Surviving family include her daughters, Misty Brown (Michael Werth) and Melodie Anschutz (Derrick) all of Russell, Kansas; foster daughter, Tammy Pellant of Wilson, Kansas; sister, Pam Aldrich (Troy) of Lacrosse, Kansas; brothers, Warren Nuss (Shelia) of Hoisington, Kansas and Gary Nuss (Janet) of Silver Creek, Washington; and two grandsons, David Brown and Jordan Werth (Sierra) and foster grandson Colton Pellant.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Nuss; and ex-husband, John Brown.

A gathering service to celebrate Sandra’s life will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Cremation has taken place and the family will have a private burial of ashes at a later date.

RUSSELL—Dean Henry Boxberger, 92, of Russell passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at Main Street Manor in Russell. Dean passed peacefully with family by his side, 24 days after the passing of his wife of 69 years, Betty.

Dean was born on Oct. 22, 1930, in Russell, the son of Solomon and Elfreda (Reinhardt, Boxberger) Stenzel. He grew up and attended schools in Russell, graduating from Russell High School in 1948. Dean was baptized in the Lutheran church in Milberger and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church, Russell. He met and fell in love with Betty Ann Balloun. After a seven-week courtship, they were united in marriage on May 16, 1954, in St John Lutheran Church. From this union, they were blessed with five sons: Matthew, Mark, Thomas, Timothy and Scott. Dean and Betty shared 69 years of married life together.

Dean loved the land and was a farmer and rancher all his life. He farmed for many years with his brother Raymond in Russell and Gove counties and then on his own on the family farm south of Russell. He also worked in the oilfield and drove the activity bus for USD 407 for 35 years. Dean served his country in the Kansas National Guard, Russell County as a commissioner for 10 years and Grant Township as treasurer. He was an active member of St John Lutheran Church, serving on the council as treasurer and ushering and greeting at worship services. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine and Russell Elks Lodge.

Dean was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed sports, hunting, bowling, playing cards and chatting over coffee with his friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife Betty Ann (Balloun); his parents; brother Raymond E. Boxberger; sister DorLeen (Boxberger) Hunter; and sister-in-law Celia Boxberger.

Survivors include sons, Matthew Boxberger (Genevieve) of San Jose, Calif., Mark Boxberger (Amy) of Noblesville, Ind., Thomas Boxberger (Sheri) of Lawrence, Timothy Boxberger (Dylan Palma) of Russell, and Scott Boxberger (Desiree) of Overland Park; grandchildren, George, Joe, Betsy (Karim Khalil), Jakob, Elyse, Gretchen, Cassie, Joshua, and Jenna; great-grandson, Rami; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Eugene Donald “Gene” Karst, 88, of Russell, passed away on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Gene was born on April 4, 1935, in Galatia. He was the son of Theodore and Rebecca (Morgenstern) Karst. At the age of 10, his family moved to Russell where he attended schools. He graduated from Russell High School in 1953. He then attended two years at Fort Hays State University.

Gene was united in marriage to Janice (Langhofer) Jack on March 22, 1953. This union was blessed with three sons Steven, Darrell and Audie. Later, Gene and Janice divorced. He was united in marriage to Vera F. Stewart on Aug. 24, 1971. They made their home in Russell. Vera preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2009. Later, he developed a close relationship with Carol McKenna.

Gene was the owner and operator of the Gene’s Service Station in Russell from 1964 to 2000 when he retired. He also owned the Handy Car Wash and Easy Muffler Shops located mainly in western Kansas. He was a professional Photographer and did many shoots for Race Way Photos. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Russell. He also belonged to the Russell Elks Lodge, the Amateur Trap Shooting Association and the Kansas Trap Shooters. He had many hobbies throughout his life being an owner and pilot of many planes, restoring vintage cars, raising bird dogs, hunting, golfing and collecting guns.

Gene’s surviving family includes his two sons, Steven Karst (Deb) of Russell and Darrell Karst of Russell; step-children, Terry Branick (Joe) of Overland Park, and Clay (Karen) Stewart of Great Bend; companion, Carol McKenna of Russell; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; son, Audie Karst; sister, Lillian (Karst) Shelton; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Gene will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

GARDEN CITY—Joanne Werner, 91, died on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City.

She was born on July 3, 1932, at Canyon, Texas, the daughter of Lawrence Jacob &amp; Julia (Frary) Fulton Sr.

She married Wesley Werner on Nov. 21, 1951, at Garden City. Joanne attended school at Canyon, Texas, and graduated high school from Wildorado, Texas, High School. She then graduated from West Texas A&amp;M University in Canyon, Texas.

After her marriage, they moved to Garden City where she worked at Dairy Queen and John’s Motors before becoming a farm wife with her husband on the family farm. She later was a cook at the Garden City Police Department, worked at IBP and was a subpara for the Garden City School District.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and past member of the Lions Club, Gray County EHU. She enjoyed cooking and gardening but most of all being involved with her family activities.

She is survived by her husband Wesley Werner, son David and Wendy Werner of Neosho, Mo.; three grandchildren Kira and Austin Mitchell of Joplin, Mo., Aaron Abrigo of Summerville, Tenn., and Amber Towns of Garden City; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two daughters Patricia Werner and Marjorie Abrigo, two sisters and two brothers.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev Jim Akins officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Joann Werner Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

GARDEN CITY—Joanne Werner, 91, died on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City.She was born on July 3, 1932, at Canyon, Texas, the daughter of Lawrence Jacob &amp; Julia (Frary) Fulton Sr.She married Wesley Werner on Nov. 21, 1951, at Garden City. Joanne attended school at Canyon, Texas, and graduated high school from Wildorado, Texas, High School. She then graduated from West Texas A&amp;M University in Canyon, Texas.<figure>

She later was a cook at the Garden City Police Department, worked at IBP and was a subpara for the Garden City School District.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and past member of the Lions Club, Gray County EHU. She enjoyed cooking and gardening but most of all being involved with her family activities.She is survived by her husband Wesley Werner, son David and Wendy Werner of Neosho, Mo.; three grandchildren Kira and Austin Mitchell of Joplin, Mo., Aaron Abrigo of Summerville, Tenn., and Amber Towns of Garden City; and seven great-grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her parents, two daughters Patricia Werner and Marjorie Abrigo, two sisters and two brothers.The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev Jim Akins officiating.Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Larry Laurence Nutting, 84, passed away Aug. 28, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. He was born Dec. 25, 1938, in Haskell County, Kansas, to Harlie Edwin and Helen Luticia (Sanders) Nutting. He married Dorothy Welsch Feb. 14, 1960, in Kinsley.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend resident, Larry was the director of manufacturing for Cross Manufacturing, Lewis, and Fuller Brush Industries, Great Bend, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kinsley and attended Encounter Church in Great Bend. He taught Sunday School and was passionate about spreading the Good News of Christ’s Salvation through his membership of Gideons International. Larry was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Royal Rangers Leader and enjoyed nature, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of the home; a daughter, Lori Katz and husband Randy of Wichita; two sons of the heart, Mark Welsch and Troy Welsch; a brother, Michael Nutting (Carla) of Crosby, Texas; a sister, Rita Giles of Saskatchewan, Canada; two grandchildren, Tara Katz (Tyson Bean) and Kelsey Aitchison (Samuel); and one great-grandson, Asher Aitchison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Harlie Nutting Jr.; and a sister, Eleanor Smith.&nbsp;

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Services are pending and will be announced at a later date. Memorials have been designated to Gideons International in the care of Bryant Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Robert Charley “Basswood Bob” Oliva (62) was born on Sept. 27, 1960, in Plainville, to Ruth Lee (Price) and Charley Robert Oliva. Tragically, Bob lost his life in an automobile accident near his home in Ely, Minn., on Aug. 24, 2023.&nbsp;

Raised in Russell, Bob was no stranger to adventures with his siblings. From a young age, you could find him making any excuse to visit Lake Wilson to fish or water ski. He continued his passion for the outdoors as a member of the local Boy Scout troop, where he made memories each year, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1979.

Bob graduated from Russell High School in 1979 and from Pittsburgh State University in 1983. He gained the skills and knowledge of an experienced carpenter and was known for his attention to detail and love for the craft.&nbsp;

Bob was a cherished member of the Ely community. His passion for the outdoors led him to create lasting memories for others through guided fishing tours, which started in the 1980s when he was employed by Charles L Sommers Canoe Base and dogsledding tours on the Boundary Waters. He was also a handyman and carpenter.&nbsp;

Bob will be remembered for his warm-hearted nature, his sense of adventure, his sly sense of humor, and his commitment to sharing the beauty of the wilderness with others. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, exploration and a deep connection to the natural world, having spent his final days with several of his siblings doing what he loved.

Proceeding in his death are his parents, and adoptive father, Boyd Knackstedt. Bob leaves behind his adoptive mother June Knackstedt, Russell, and eight siblings – Bud Knackstedt, Russell; Nancy (Wayne) Woodyard, Hutchinson; Dennis (Beth) Knackstedt, Golden, Mo.; James (Debra) Oliva, Topeka; Barbara Volle, Axtell; David Goza, Deborah (Don) Johnson, and Alvin Goza, Emporia; and many other family members, friends, and neighbors. Although he had no children, Bob proudly cared for many huskies in his life, most recently Vera and Ima who have been re-homed in the community.

Services for Bob will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at&nbsp;<a>Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary</a>, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.&nbsp; A Celebration of Life will be held later in Ely, Minn.

Almena Resident, Forrest "Jim" Ruth, passed away, peacefully in his home, on Aug. 29, 2023, at the age of 72.&nbsp;

Forrest James Ruth was born on June 21, 1951, in Thornton, Colo., to his parents Forrest and Opal (Brown) Ruth.

He was married to Marla (Miller) Ruth on Oct. 26, 1987, in Norton.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents Forrest and Opal Ruth.

Survivors include his wife Marla Ruth of Almena, sons Jeremy Ruth and wife Joni of Kearney, Neb., and Troy Ruth of Almena, daughter Sammye Clark and husband Andrew of Georgetown, Texas, stepsons Christopher Wentz of Beaumont, Calif., and Erik Wentz of Cheyenne, Wyo., sister Shirley Moore of Orlando Fla., as well as nine grandchildren: Camile, Jamie, Tahpanga, Hunter, Alura, Ella, Charlye, Martin, and Tommy and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Sept. 9, 2023, at the Almena Community Building in Almea.

Forrest 'Jim' James Ruth

Norma J. Schmidtberger, 87, of Overland Park, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9405 Mission Road, Leawood. Christian Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa.

Norma was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Rush County, the daughter of Wendelin and Pauline (Urban) Schmidt. She was a member of Cure of Ars Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin in 2007, a son, Dale, in 2003, and sisters Margola and Melba, and brother Wendelin Jr.

Norma is survived by two daughters, Linda Coffee and husband Bill, Olathe, Sandy Mulvany and husband Tim, Roeland Park; daughter-in-law, Elaine Schmidtberger, Overland Park; and a son, Greg Schmidtberger and wife Lois, Edgerton; brothers, Irvin Schmidt, Wichita; Leon Schmidt and wife, Roseann, Wichita; Gary Schmidt and wife, Karen, Hot Springs, Melvin and wife, Connie, Victoria; and sister-in-law, Catherine Schmidt, Wichita; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Norma grew up in western Kansas in the small German Catholic farming community of Pfeifer, just south of Hays. Raised with a sister and five brothers, they grew up hard working with a strong family bond and faith that they have passed on through the generations. She is proud to be from the home of one of the prettiest churches in Kansas, The Holy Cross Shrine.

Norma married her husband of 53 years, Marvin Schmidtberger, in a double wedding ceremony along with her sister Melba to Marvin’s brother Leroy. One of the families’ favorite stories to tell...Leroy was planning to marry Melba and their mom said to our dad, “If Leroy is getting married, you might as well marry Norma." The double wedding celebration was on, and the two couples were best of friends for life!

Norma spent her young married life raising four children in Mission, Kan., working as a cashier for area grocery stores and participating in parish life at St. Pius X. Guided by their own faith and strong work ethic, she and Marvin saw to it that the children were raised in a Catholic environment sending them to St. Pius X Elementary and Bishop Miege High Schools. As the kids attended high school, Norma used her cashier skills to own and operate the family convenience store “Handi Mart” just down the road from Lake Quivira. She finished her working career with Cardinal Office Supply in Mission, leaving to start many hours of babysitting as the grandchildren began to multiply.

One of the families’ fondest memories of our mom was her cooking. She loved preparing meals!! The recipe traditions she learned as a child in a large household prepared her to mostly memorize everything she cooked…many with interesting names: kaselabba (cheese sacks), the Schmidt family favorite, bierochs, galuskies, knoedel, kald shunka, schwartzberren kucken—all German names we could not pronounce, but all delicious! She was always baking and continued to send her famous cinnamon rolls with Dale’s lake buddies every year after his death in 2003. They always made a special trip to visit her and, of course, pick up the goodies! We always encouraged her to start her own catering company named “This Food Tastes like Schmidt." Her cooking will be missed, and we can only hope to carry on the tradition and figure out the recipes.

She loved the arrival of the casinos in Kansas City and would frequent them whenever given the chance. Family visits from her many brothers often found them all spending the night at one of the casinos. She loved to be in a crowd and cherished all the family reunions, weddings, and many events that brought the entire family together in Kansas City, Pfeifer and Wichita.

Growing up around the Schmidt and Schmidtberger clan, Norma developed a quick wit to deal with the onery men!! She kept us all laughing with her sarcasm and great sense of humor.

Mom was a beloved homemaker that held her family first in her heart. She had a strong faith, and it was rare to see her without a rosary in her hand. Her faith should be a reminder for all to follow and it helped her through life’s hardest moments. All who knew her loved her outgoing personality and knew she was always there to join in the fun, a good conversation or lend a helping hand. She simply loved to be around people.

KENSINGTON – Howard H. Grauerholz, age 91, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at Smith Center Health &amp; Rehab in Smith Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Jeffrey Dean.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Amy (Bob) Bienhoff of Kensington; a son Bruce (Lisa) Grauerholz of Hildreth, Neb.

Glenn Bird, 92, of Quinter, went to his heavenly home for which he longed on Thursday, Aug. 24 in Wichita. Glenn was born on Sept. 6, 1930, in Brandon, Colo., to John and Ruby Walker Bird. As a young boy, he moved to a farm south of Quinter. Glenn had two younger brothers, Gary and Roye, and a sister, Lois, who died at an early age.

He enjoyed sports in school, participating in football, basketball and track. Glenn married his sweetheart, Arlene Coburn, at the bride’s home north of Quinter on Jan. 30, 1952, before shipping out to serve in Korea. They were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage and raised a son, Scott, and three daughters, Glenna Rae, Melony and Stacey.

He was proud to serve his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 as a chief mechanic of the headquarters Battery Motor Pool. He received numerous commendations and medals. Glenn and Arlene wrote love letters back and forth daily during his absence.

Glenn’s faith and acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Savior was the basis for his life. He worked hard and truly lived his faith in all he did. Glenn was very active in and supportive of the Quinter Methodist Church.

Glenn was a quiet man of few words but deep thoughts, great integrity, and absolute honesty. He was selfless in his support and generosity to others and well known as a wonderful neighbor and community leader.

As a farmer and cattleman, he was a great steward of both the land and animals. In addition to the livestock, the Bird farm was well known for its variety of animals, including Bambi (an orphan fawn rescued by Glenn), peacocks, chickens, ducks, geese, llamas, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats. He planted windbreaks and cover crops, winning an award for Kansas Wildlife Habitat. Over the years, he worked closely with his father John Bird, father-in-law Sam Coburn, brother-in-law Sammie Coburn, nephew Lance Coburn, as well as dear friends who were also neighbors. They shared a special bond of love for family and the land.

Glenn and Arlene enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and games, and socializing with friends. They were highly involved in and supportive of their children’s school events and interests, encouraging them to develop their talents. Family was very important to Glenn, and even talking about or praying for his family would often bring tears to his eyes.

Glenn was an avid fisherman and hunter with special memories of times with his brothers, Gary and Roye, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends, and other loved ones.

A relaxing hobby for Glenn was searching for fossils, rocks, and arrowheads in his beloved Horsethief Canyon. A prehistoric mosasaur and sea turtle were discovered there, excavated and donated to area museums.

Glenn, a successful farmer who loved to raise field crops of wheat and fall crops to provide for his family, relaxed by tending a vegetable and fruit garden. Glenn loved to share his bounty and deliver it to neighbors and friends.

In later years, Glenn enjoyed woodworking, refinishing and restoring furniture, rock polishing, and building birdhouses. He whistled as he worked, and in the last several months was known for his singing and happily dancing away.

Glenn spent his life loving and honoring his country and was a member of the American Legion. He wore his uniform proudly and participated in parades, Memorial Day ceremonies at the cemetery and funeral services.

Glenn will be so greatly missed by many. He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Glenna Rae (Norm) Alexander of Leesburg, Fla.; daughter Melony (Gary) McClure of Assaria; son Scott (Sheryl) Bird of Quinter; and daughter Stacey (Scott) Wood of Wichita. He also leaves 16 adored grandchildren and 26 precious great-grandchildren: Avery (Kim), Abigail, Asher, and Theodore Alexander of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Alden (Sarah), Isaac, Lillian, Benjamin, Jonah, and Hannah Alexander of Salina; Emily (Nathan), Caleb, Micah, and Levi Watson of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Kesa, Lois Kael, Toben, Eleanor, and Thatcher Easter of Andale; Kimber (Chris), Madeleine, and Miles Breeden of Wichita; Mark (Lili) McClure of Topeka; Max McClure of Poděbrady, Czech Republic; Marissa (Jacob) and Quentin Jones of Springfield, Mo.; Michaela Bird of Kansas City; Stephen Bird of Austin, Texas; Matthew Bird of Overland Park; Sarah Bird of Overland Park; Valerie (Luis), Isabella, Samuel, and Aurora Alicea of Benton; Angela (Jonathan), Jacey, Jordyn, and Morgan Lee of Wichita; Olivia (Erik) and Blakely Harbutz of Wichita; Aimee (Taylor) and Lawson Carter of Olathe; and honorary son Jorge Rodriguez, Monterrey, Mexico.

Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend, Arlene Coburn Bird, on April 15, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby Bird and sister, Lois Bird, as well as parents-in-law, Sam and Gladys Coburn, brother and sister-in-law, Sammie and Glenva Coburn, brother-in-law, David Coburn, and niece Maylene Dees.

The celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Quinter Methodist Church, 218 W. Fourth St. The recorded service will be available at <a href="http://www.schmittfuneral.com">www.schmittfuneral.com</a>.&nbsp;Burial will follow at Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

 </figure>September 6, 1930 - August 24, 2023Glenn Bird, 92, of Quinter, went to his heavenly home for which he longed on Thursday, Aug. 24 in Wichita. Glenn was born on Sept. 6, 1930, in Brandon, Colo., to John and Ruby Walker Bird. As a young boy, he moved to a farm south of Quinter. Glenn had two younger brothers, Gary and Roye, and a sister, Lois, who died at an early age.He enjoyed sports in school, participating in football, basketball and track. Glenn married his sweetheart, Arlene Coburn, at the bride’s home north of Quinter on Jan. 30, 1952, before shipping out to serve in Korea. They were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage and raised a son, Scott, and three daughters, Glenna Rae, Melony and Stacey.He was proud to serve his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 as a chief mechanic of the headquarters Battery Motor Pool. He received numerous commendations and medals. Glenn and Arlene wrote love letters back and forth daily during his absence.Glenn’s faith and acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Savior was the basis for his life. He worked hard and truly lived his faith in all he did. Glenn was very active in and supportive of the Quinter Methodist Church.Glenn was a quiet man of few words but deep thoughts, great integrity, and absolute honesty. He was selfless in his support and generosity to others and well known as a wonderful neighbor and community leader.As a farmer and cattleman, he was a great steward of both the land and animals. In addition to the livestock, the Bird farm was well known for its variety of animals, including Bambi (an orphan fawn rescued by Glenn), peacocks, chickens, ducks, geese, llamas, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats. He planted windbreaks and cover crops, winning an award for Kansas Wildlife Habitat. Over the years, he worked closely with his father John Bird, father-in-law Sam Coburn, brother-in-law Sammie Coburn, nephew Lance Coburn, as well as dear friends who were also neighbors. They shared a special bond of love for family and the land.Glenn and Arlene enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and games, and socializing with friends. They were highly involved in and supportive of their children’s school events and interests, encouraging them to develop their talents. Family was very important to Glenn, and even talking about or praying for his family would often bring tears to his eyes.Glenn was an avid fisherman and hunter with special memories of times with his brothers, Gary and Roye, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends, and other loved ones.A relaxing hobby for Glenn was searching for fossils, rocks, and arrowheads in his beloved Horsethief Canyon. A prehistoric mosasaur and sea turtle were discovered there, excavated and donated to area museums.Glenn, a successful farmer who loved to raise field crops of wheat and fall crops to provide for his family, relaxed by tending a vegetable and fruit garden. Glenn R. Bird

After many years of hard work and loving his family, Ralph Amerin went home on Aug. 24, 2023, in Johnson. He was born May 4, 1929, in Plains, the son of John and Anna (Schield) Amerin.

Ralph grew up in Plains and graduated from Plains High School. He met and later married Virginia Gertner on Nov. 28, 1950, in Sterling, Colo. 

They moved to Stanton County in 1954. Ralph was a farmer and father to two boys, Jim and Bill, and three girls, Kathy, Cheryl and Carol. He cherished the time spent with his family and many friends.

He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and the oldest active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ralph is survived by his children, Kathy Lippert and husband Brian of St. George, Kan., Jim Amerin and wife Lori, Cheryl Wilkerson and husband Tony, Carol Garrison, and Bill Amerin and wife Candee all of Johnson; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, E.G. Amerin of Plains; and two sisters, Marge Kramer of Ulysses and Angie Ebeling of Plainview, Texas.

Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Amerin; wife, Virginia Amerin; brother, John R. Amerin Jr.; and sisters, Anna Marie Banker and Betty Mansell.

Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, and funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, both at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.
