Kelly T. Jeroue, walked into heaven on October 21, 2023. He was born September 4, 1959, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Charles and Mary Ann (Mahaffy) Jeroue. &nbsp;

Kelly graduated from St. John High School in 1978, where he was active in all sports, football, track, and baseball. &nbsp;He went on to play baseball for Barton County Community College.

On October 3, 1988, he married Katherine M. Schremmer in Liberal, Kansas. Together they moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where they spent 22 years before moving back to their roots in Kansas in January of 2019. 

Kelly worked as an insurance and car salesman, a chimney sweep, and at the Amalgameted Sugar factory. &nbsp; He also enjoyed coaching his children and other children in baseball and softball and following their careers. &nbsp;Always considered quite the monkey, he excelled at his own tree trimming business, K&amp;K Tree Trimming &amp; Removal. Unfortunately, an accident placed Kelly in a wheelchair. He spent a long time in rehabilitation at the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, where his zest for life and talk were appreciated on his rounds to other patients in more traumatic care. Kelly was strong in his faith and loved to share it with others. He was a current member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Katherine Jeroue of the home, and three children, Kasey (Kayla) Jeroue of Twin Falls, Idaho, Kaleb Jeroue of Orofino, Idaho, and Kynzi Jeroue of Burley, Idaho; and his four beloved grandchildren, Carter, Parker, Peighton and Braylynn; a brother, Ken (Barbara) Jeroue of Russell; and five sisters, Barbara Gordon of Priest River, Idaho, Jody (Steve) Klepper of Great Bend, Cindy Maser of Clovis, New Mexico, Jacqueline Jeroue of Fresno, California, Tammy (Todd) Alsup of Olathe, Kansas; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Tracy Jeroue, and his parents-in-law, Jim and Kitty Schremmer.&nbsp;

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with vigil and rosary service to begin at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Warren Stecklein. Interment will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington, Kansas.

Kenneth Marvin “Ken” Collins, 72, Hays, died Sunday, October 22, 2023 at HaysMed.

He was born June 23, 1951 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the son of Franklin L. and Virginia Sue (Pleasant) Collins. 

In 1970 he graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville, North Carolina and attended Rockingham Community College studying business law. 

From 1971-1974, Ken served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist with the 207th MP Company serving at Fort Riley, Kansas. 

On May 18, 1973, he was united in marriage to Janice Robben in Hays and celebrated their 50th anniversary this past May. 

Ken worked in law enforcement for 28 years with the Hays Police Department and nine years with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. 

Other memberships include Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays American Legion #173, Third Degree Knights of Columbus St. Mary’s Council #6984, Fourth Degree Bishop Cunningham Assembly, serving as a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator, Former District Deputy, State Council Program Chairman, Financial Secretary, and as a volunteer with Kansas Special Olympics. He was a Boy Scout Unit Commissioner, a little league baseball coach, an avid Royals and Chiefs fan, NASCAR enthusiast, and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife Janice of the home, three sons, Kirk Collins of Johnston, IA, Kale Collins and wife Jessica of Wichita, and Kylan Collins and wife Angela of Park City, a sister, Gwen Ford and husband Jerry of Lenoir, NC, a half-sister, Fleeta Griffith of La Grange, NC, two step-brothers, Fr. Francis Andrew Perry III and Thomas Perry, both of La Grange, NC, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wayne Robben and Lester Robben and wife Donetta, both of Hays, Jerry Robben and wife Linda, Joyce Bieker and husband Dale, and Lee Robben and wife Lisa, all of Arizona, and Lois Werth and husband Harold, Jr. of Quinter, 12 grandchildren, Kory, Grace, and Allie Collins, Kailee Robinson, Brett, Ella, Mason, Kooper, Abby, Hannah, Layton, and Kason Collins, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, Walter Griffith, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Alexia Robben.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Don Zimmerman and Fr. Nick Parker officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 p.m., the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m, and a vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Marilyn Edwards, 93, passed away October 19, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born February 14, 1930, in Great Bend to Lloyd and Elizabeth (Bell) Spruill. 

She married Virgil Standish then later married Richard M. Edwards February 14, 1975, in Reno, Nev. Richard passed away December 8, 2010.&nbsp;

Marilyn, a long time Great Bend resident, was a member of Pi Phi at the University of Kansas, P.E.O, Great Bend Petroleum Club and several bridge clubs. Marilyn was a true friend who valued time spent with those who were dear to her.

Survivors include, two sons, Scott Standish (Tonie) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and Barton Standish (Marjorie Rosenman) of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Coleman Standish (Staci Wendt) of Long Beach, Calif., Dylan Standish (Amy Walser) of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Caitlin Standish of Portland, Ore.; and two great-grandchildren, Vincent Standish and Zadie Standish. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Edwards; and a sister, Betty Theisen.&nbsp;

A private family service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery Mausoleum.

Melvin J. Dinkel, 81, Hays, died Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Via Christi Village.

He was born September 1, 1942 in Hays, the son of Joe S. and Pauline (Karlin) Dinkel. 

In 1960, Melvin graduated from Victoria High School, and on August 20, 1962, he was united in marriage to Clarita M. Pelzel at St. Severin Church. They celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 23, 2021. 

Melvin delivered milk for LK Dairy and Hiland Dairy, and worked construction, doing trim carpentry many afternoons and evenings. 

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed playing Skip-Bo, watching sports, including women’s college softball, and was an avid Royals, Chiefs, and Braves fan. 

Most of all, he loved his family, granddaughters, and his extended daycare family.

Survivors include his two sons: William “Bill” Dinkel and Chris Dinkel and wife Kim, both of Hays, two brothers, Delmar Dinkel of Hays and Kenny Dinkel and wife Marjorie of Plainville, three sisters, Dorothy Jacobs of Hays, Lucy Brown of Victoria, and Donna Deckman and husband Joe of Hays, two granddaughters, Katie Clay and husband Brandon of Topeka and Joslyn Dinkel of Salina, a great-granddaughter, Elliott Clay, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank and James “Jim” Dinkel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6:00 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., all on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Melvin J. Dinkel

Janet Joan Funk, 77, of Russell, Kansas died on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Main Street Manor of Russell, Kansas.

Janet was born on June 30, 1946, in Russell. She was the daughter of LaVern H. and Elaine L. (Karst) Becker. She grew up on the family farm near Milberger, Kansas. 

She graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1964. She then attended and graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a degree in elementary education.

Janet was united in marriage to Wayne E. Funk on August 7, 1966 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas. From this union, Janet and Wayne were blessed with three sons Doug, Warren, and Deric.

Janet was a dedicated teacher for 40 years. She started teaching in 1967. She worked for a few local school districts before spending most of her teaching years in Russell. She also was the librarian at the school.

Janet was an active member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. She was on the church council, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Prairie Mates FCE for 52 years, Milberger Activities Association, the K- State Extension Council, Sunflower 4-H member and Leader, and was the Russell County Republican Committeewoman. 

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, singing, a little gambling, and taking advantage of her gift for gab. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Janet lived by the motto “Take Care of Everyone” and this was a strong influence on her and her family.

Surviving family include her sons Doug Funk (Teema) of Russell, Kansas, Warren Funk (Erica) of Rexford, Kansas and Deric Funk (Mandy) of Galatia, Kansas; brother Martin Becker and wife Susan of Russell, Kansas; four grandchildren Lakin, Kaitlyn, Camille and Callen Funk; three step grandchildren Molly, Macy and Chloe and three stepgreat- grandchildren Delilah, Amari and Lovelyn. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Wayne on September 05, 2022.

Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 23, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner- Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Prairie Mates FCE for 52 years, Milberger Activities Association, the K- State Extension Council, Sunflower 4-H member and Leader, and was the Russell County Republican Committeewoman. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, singing, a little gambling, and taking advantage of her gift for gab. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Janet lived by the motto “Take Care of Everyone” and this was a strong influence on her and her family.Surviving family include her sons Doug Funk (Teema) of Russell, Kansas, Warren Funk (Erica) of Rexford, Kansas and Deric Funk (Mandy) of Galatia, Kansas; brother Martin Becker and wife Susan of Russell, Kansas; four grandchildren Lakin, Kaitlyn, Camille and Callen Funk; three step grandchildren Molly, Macy and Chloe and three stepgreat- grandchildren Delilah, Amari and Lovelyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Wayne on September 05, 2022.Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery. Alma Louise Campas passed away peacefully on October 19th, 2023 at Wichita County Long Term Care in Leoti, KS. Alma was born on November 2nd, 1928 at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City, Kansas to Herman and Olga Kuhlman. 

She lived all of her years in western Kansas, growing up just south of the Wichita-Kearny County line, spending her younger years in the Lydia area and her high school years, and the rest of her days in Leoti, KS.

She was the wife of Charles Campas, whom she wed on March 22, 1947, and who passed away in 1994. She and Charlie had three children, Priscilla, Roxy, and Gary. 

Together, they continued the farm passed down from her father and started Charlie’s Mexican Restaurant in April of 1962. Throughout her years, Alma was an active member of the Leoti community, the Wichita County Genealogy Society, and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish, where she taught RCIA.

She spent her days raising her family, helping to run the family farm, running and working at Charlie’s restaurant, attending the games and activities of her children and grandchildren, staying in touch with relatives near and far, and giving special attention to researching and maintaining family history. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and smart businesswoman.

Alma is preceded in death by her mother and father, Herman J.W. Kuhlman and Olga Kettler Kuhlman, her sisters and only siblings, Verna Foos and Norma Kulhman, her husband, Charlie Campas, and great-great-grandson, Andrew Williams. She is also preceded by her sisters-in-law, Magdalena Cordova, Louise Korbe, Inez Blau, and Beverly Campos, and brother-in-law Ray Campos, who remained close family after Charlie’s passing and until their deaths.

She is survived by her children Roxy (Jan) Campas and Gary (Sheila) Campas, both of Leoti, KS and Priscilla (Robert) Tell of Montrose, CO; sister, Joyce Miller of Golden, Colorado, her grandchildren Traci (Mike) McGuire of Pratt, KS, Shandell (Joe) Schieferecke of McPherson, KS, Nicholas Campas of Lakin, KS, Morgan (Scott) O’Hara of Parker, CO, and Keegan Campas of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren Ashtyn Schieferecke, Lakyn Schieferecke, Abby Schieferecke, Parker Campas, Sasha O’Hara, Xavier O’Hara, Thaddeus O’Hara, Danielle (Gary) Roberts, Corey (Brittany) McGuire, and Megan (Brady) Hutchinson; great-great-grandchildren Charlotte Hutchinson, Kallen, Krew and Kilyn McGuire, and Taylor and Alexis Williams.

Alma’s family extends sincere thanks and gratitude to the community and extended family members who have shown Alma love and support over the years and to the Wichita County Long Term Care unit for providing her care and comfort in her final years.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua in Leoti, KS with Frs. Bernard Felix and Benjamin Martin presiding. Burial to follow at Leoti Cemetery.

Kenneth Eldon “Kenny” Wells, 86, passed away October 17, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on June 21, 1937, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Emery Doyle and Bertha (Staerkel) Wells. 

Kenny was married to Ruby Popp; they were later divorced. He was then married to Lois Bath.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Kenny worked as an electrician before becoming owner and operator of Wells Seamless Guttering for more than 40 years. 

He was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Kenny was also a member of many country bands, playing the bass. He liked fishing, bowling, and was a pet lover, especially his dogs.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra (Steve) McAnulla, Carol (Bill) Herrman, and Cheryl Davis, all of Great Bend, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Douglas Wells; his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Larry Wells; and his beloved dog, Missy.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date. 

Memorials have been designated to the Golden Belt Humane Society or Fraternal Order of Eagles, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Cynthia Gail Judd, 69, passed away on October 21, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on August 25, 1954, in Wichita, Kansas, to William and Phyllis (Corley) Votapka. On November 28, 1981, she married Mark A. Judd in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

A long time Great Bend resident coming from Stockton, Cindy worked as an accountant for CPI and financial manager for 20/20 Optix. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Cindy was an avid reader, enjoyed KU basketball games, and participating in the Relay For Life Survivor Walk.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Amanda (E.J.) Shepherd of Louisburg, Kansas, and Andrea (Chris) Jeska of Great Bend, Kansas; seven grandchildren; Ward, Winston, Whittaker, Benton, Jude, Adalynn, and Silas; a brother, Timothy (Laurie) Votapka of Kildeer, Illinois; and a sister, Nancy (Howard) Diacon of Lawrence, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Herbert A. Steinike, Jr., 97, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Gove County Hospital, Quinter, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on October 15, 1926, to Herbert A. Steinike, Sr. and Alma (Dieckmann) Steinike at Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.

Herb graduated in May of 1944 from Cheyenne Wells High School and was drafted into the Army in March of 1945. &nbsp;He was honorably discharged in September of 1946. &nbsp;Decorations and citations during his enlistment included the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

On July 24, 1949, he married Jewell Embree at Cheyenne Wells, and they lived for many years in Sharon Springs, Kansas. &nbsp;She preceded him in death on October 26, 1998. &nbsp;

Herb was also preceded in death by his parents, son Paul Steinike, sisters Pauline Teague, Katherine Koeller, Leona Leonard, Bernice Dorzweiler, and brother Elmer Steinike.

Herb and Deloris (Packard) were married on March 18, 2000, in Gove, Kansas where they made their home and Deloris continues to reside.

Herb retired from the Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer after 46 years of service. &nbsp;

Herb loved to garden, tell jokes, bowl, woodwork (he made many rocking horses), and do construction projects. &nbsp;A particular joy for Herb was making and sharing his special sugar popcorn with family and friends and working on the Wallace County fairgrounds railroad.

Herb is survived by Deloris of the home; his children David (Jan) Steinike, Panama City, Florida and Susan (John) Wempe, Little River, Kansas; grandchildren Jennifer Deines, Elizabeth (Joseph) Hibbard, Jesse (Danyelle) Deines, and Samuel (Senzen) Steinike; eight great-grandchildren; stepchildren Charles (Rose) Packard, Grainfield, Kansas, Debra (Randall) Metzger, Burlingame, Kansas, and Brian (Annette) Packard, Gove, Kansas; 15 step-grandchildren, and 24 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be on Monday, October 23, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. CST (9:30 a.m. MST) at the Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, Kansas.

Interment will follow the service at the Sharon Springs Cemetery in Sharon Springs, Kansas at 12:30 p.m. CST (11:30 a.m. MST)

Helen Roberta Holbrook, daughter of Robert and Ella (Brennan) Mechsner, passed away on October 20, 2023 at the age of 91 at the Andbe Home.

Helen was born on February 25, 1932 at the Norton County Hospital. 

She went to Mt. Zion Country School. When she started there were 13 students in school. When she finished eighth grade, she was the last student to attend and then school closed. Helen went to Norton Community High School and graduated in 1949. Later she took two years of accounting from Colby Community College. 

Helen and Earl Holbrook were married in 1950. He was a baker at Molene’s Bakery. They purchased the business in the 1970s and operated the business until they retired in 1995. 

Helen was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She liked to grow flowers and gardening. She canned and froze vegetables and shared the extras with neighbors and friends. Helen liked to sew and make quilts. She was quilt chairman for the St. Francis Altar Society for 15 years, making quilts for the fall bazaar, many of which she made herself. Helen also liked to crochet doilies, edging and other items. In her later years she crocheted afghans for gifts and the church bazaar.

Helen is survived by her son, David Holbrook of Scott City, KS; nephews, Bob Mechsner and Bill Donovan; nieces, Donna Avant and Susan Mechsner and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; sons: Dennis and Jimmy Holbrook; sister, Alice Donovan and her husband George; brothers, Ed Mechsner and wife Ida, Don Mechsner and wife Helen, Ken Mechsner, Jack Mechsner and wife Wanda; nephews, Roger Mechsner, Martin Mechsner, Mike Mechsner, and Steven Mechsner; six sisters-in-law and husbands; five brothers-in-law and wives, and a baby brother-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October, 24 at the funeral home. A wake service and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation.

<h2>Helen Roberta Holbrook</h2>February 25, 1932 - October 20, 2023Helen Roberta Holbrook, daughter of Robert and Ella (Brennan) Mechsner, passed away on October 20, 2023 at the age of 91 at the Andbe Home.Helen was born on February 25, 1932 at the Norton County Hospital. She went to Mt. Zion Country School. When she started there were 13 students in school. When she finished eighth grade, she was the last student to attend and then school closed. Helen went to Norton Community High School and graduated in 1949. Later she took two years of accounting from Colby Community College. Helen and Earl Holbrook were married in 1950. He was a baker at Molene’s Bakery. They purchased the business in the 1970s and operated the business until they retired in 1995. Helen was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society.She liked to grow flowers and gardening. She canned and froze vegetables and shared the extras with neighbors and friends. Helen liked to sew and make quilts. She was quilt chairman for the St. Francis Altar Society for 15 years, making quilts for the fall bazaar, many of which she made herself. Helen also liked to crochet doilies, edging and other items. In her later years she crocheted afghans for gifts and the church bazaar.Helen is survived by her son, David Holbrook of Scott City, KS; nephews, Bob Mechsner and Bill Donovan; nieces, Donna Avant and Susan Mechsner and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; sons: Dennis and Jimmy Holbrook; sister, Alice Donovan and her husband George; brothers, Ed Mechsner and wife Ida, Don Mechsner and wife Helen, Ken Mechsner, Jack Mechsner and wife Wanda; nephews, Roger Mechsner, Martin Mechsner, Mike Mechsner, and Steven Mechsner; six sisters-in-law and husbands; five brothers-in-law and wives, and a baby brother-in-law.Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. Cody Xavier Pfeifer, 29, passed away October 19, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on January 11, 1994, in Hays, Kansas, to Todd and Tambra (Herdman) Pfeifer.

A resident of Hutchinson, Cody was an assistant store manager at Dillons. 

He was an avid board and card game player, along with his love on Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Cosplay Conventions, and anime. Cody could also be found either at the lake, camping in Colorado, or just being outside. Above all, Cody cherished his time spent with family and friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include his parents; sisters, Sierra, Marissa (fiancé, Landon Winkler), Johanna (fiancé, Tyler Grieb), and Erin Pfeifer, all of Great Bend; grandparents, Ray and Sheila Pfeifer and Harold Herdman; three uncles, Dr. Cory Pfeifer, Chad (Stephanie) Herdman, and Trenton (Jana) Herdman; six cousins, Athena Grotheer, Justin Herdman, Joey Herdman, Jeremy Herdman, Clayton Garrison, and Kendrick Herdman; close friends, Tiffany Ireland, Isaiah Pesina, Aaron Hostetler and Bryan Hostetler; and beloved dog, Yuki.

Cody was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Phyllis Stuart and Janet Herdman.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2023, with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Lisa Marie Hansen, 29, of Leoti, Kansas, passed away on October 15, 2023. She was born on July 27, 1994, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Christina Alpert and Garry Hansen.

Lisa was the kindest and most compassionate person. She had the best smile and the most beautiful green eyes that could light up your heart.

Lisa was a member of Church in the City - Temple Beth Abraham in Denver, Colorado. She enjoyed being a part of their Messianic Community.

Lisa loved to sing. She sang all the time. She was full of joy.

Lisa was a deeply loved daughter, sister and her favorite role was that of Auntie. She loved her little Fletchers and Hansen boys fiercely. She faithfully taught them about God and grace. She loved to work a little lesson into anything she did with them from working in the garden to baking cupcakes. The love and joy she had for them was evident in everything she did.

She was a defender of those that have no voice. Lisa spent most of her life battling incurable, debilitating disease. She would never quit and never let anyone define her by sickness.

She is survived by her mother Christina Alpert, her sister Kirsten (Breck) Fletcher, brother Eric Hansen, nephews and nieces Braden and Davis Hansen, Bodie, Remi, Brynlie and Jury Fletcher; many aunts, uncle and cousins; and many, many friends.

Lisa is predeceased by her father Garry Aksel Hansen.

She was a woman of great love and faith who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The celebration of Lisa’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 2:00 central time, at Abundant Life Fellowship, 211 W. L Street, Leoti, KS. Service will be live streamed by Price and Sons.

Reginald "Reggie" Reed, 93, of Courtland, passed away October 17, 2023.

Reginald “Reggie” Oren Reed was born February 28, 1930, in rural Scandia to Ruby (Freed) Reed and Oren Reed, and peacefully passed at home surrounded by his family.&nbsp; 

Reggie was the oldest child of five born to Ruby and Oren.&nbsp; 

Reggie attended primary school at Union Valley, rural Scandia and graduated Belleville High School.&nbsp; He attended Kansas State University for one semester before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.&nbsp; He trained at Camp Pendleton in California before being shipped overseas to serve in the Korean War as a machine gunner and corporal.&nbsp; 

Upon his return to California, he and Jacqueline J. Lilly wed on November 7, 1953, in Courtside, Arizona, and resided in Hawthorne, California, for a short time before returning to Kansas.

In 1954, they welcomed their oldest son, Michael, followed by Melinda and Mark in the years to come.&nbsp; In the late 50s, they purchased the Olson homestead south of Courtland and lived in the rock house and continued to farm and raise their growing family.&nbsp; In the mid-60s, Reggie and Jackie purchased the Ullom place just two miles north which is what we call our Reed homeplace and was our family farm headquarters for many years. Reggie and Jackie lived their entire married lives in the Courtland, Scandia area where they worked hard to build their farming operation and create a life focused on farming and family for over 60 years.

Reggie took pride in his family (especially his grandkids and great-grandkids), crops and livestock. Grandad and Grandma always had time for grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was well-read and informed on agriculture and the world, he liked public radio and classical music, was skilled in the shop, understood the value of time and people, appreciated the arts and loved animals, babies and children.&nbsp; Reggie instilled values in his family like work ethic, integrity, honesty, grit, humor and love.&nbsp; A hard-working farmer and stockman, along with the titles of Dad and Grandad were Reggie’s identity.&nbsp;

He and Jackie leave a legacy of these values and countless memories in their survivors:&nbsp; children Michael Reed (Susan Illig), Las Vegas, NV, Melinda Reed-Hettick (Bob), Stevensville, MT, Mark Reed (Saundra), Courtland, KS; grandchildren Dane Reed, Janine Heincker (Carl), Matthew Hettick (Rebecka), Katie Reed-Carlgren (Bret), Michael Hettick (Anne), Davin Reed, Neely Reed-Kohmetscher (Roger), Andrew Hettick (Teddy) and Marisa Reed; 15 great-grandchildren: Brandt, Blakely and Bristol Carlgren; Reed and Ansley Kohmetscher; Bailee, Blair, Isabella, Blaise, Eden, Brene and Basil Heincker; Ruca Dierks, Grace and Carson Hettick and Brexton Hettick; loving sister, Patricia Dinning, Courtland, KS; family friend and caregiver Theresa Campbell; loyal buddies and pets Jet-Jack, Gus and Caroline Cookie Kohmetscher.

Larned – Tess Viola Couch, 40, passed away October 18, 2023.

She was born August 19, 1983 in Larned, the daughter of Gerald Raymond and Lee Anne Stueckemann Williams. &nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, she was a longtime employee for Larned State Hospital.

She was of the Christian faith. &nbsp;Tess enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, cruising around, doing her make-up, and loved spending time and shopping with her girls.

She was married to Shawn Couch. &nbsp;They later divorced.

Survivors include: mother, Lee Anne Williams, Larned; two daughters, Alexandria Couch, Larned, and Samantha Couch, Ellsworth; sister, Luci Williams, Larned; nephew, Deacon Martin, Larned; significant other, Gina Perez, Larned; two dogs, Elway and Toshi.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Williams.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

 </figure>August 19, 1983 - October 18, 2023Larned – Tess Viola Couch, 40, passed away October 18, 2023.She was born August 19, 1983 in Larned, the daughter of Gerald Raymond and Lee Anne Stueckemann Williams. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident, she was a longtime employee for Larned State Hospital.She was of the Christian faith. &nbsp;Tess enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, cruising around, doing her make-up, and loved spending time and shopping with her girls.She was married to Shawn Couch. &nbsp;They later divorced.Survivors include: mother, Lee Anne Williams, Larned; two daughters, Alexandria Couch, Larned, and Samantha Couch, Ellsworth; sister, Luci Williams, Larned; nephew, Deacon Martin, Larned; significant other, Gina Perez, Larned; two dogs, Elway and Toshi.She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Williams.Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.Memorials may be given to Samantha Couch Cancer Fund in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O. Francis Richard Everett passed away on October 9, 2023, in Woodston, KS, at the age of 66. He was born on February 15, 1957, to Albert and Dorothy (Abernathy) Everett in Kansas City, KS.

Francis grew up in Kansas City and attended Turner High School. His parents were both from the Gaylord area, so as a young adult he moved to his grandparents’ farm in rural Gaylord, KS. 

He spent many of his years working in agriculture as a farmhand, truck driver, and equipment operator. Francis was handy with tools and often worked on family and friends’ vehicles and such. 

He enjoyed following the Kansas City Chiefs and watching movies, especially old westerns. Francis lived life to the fullest and tended to lean towards the wild side of life, which eventually caught up with him in his later years.

Francis is survived by his sons, Steven Everett of Terra Haute, IN, Gregory Everett of Norfolk, NE, Jeffry Everett of Hutchison, KS, Matthew Everett of Appleton City, MO, and Frankie of Smith Center, KS; nine grandchildren; wife Heidi (Dunning) Everett; sister, Margaret Holland of Kansas City, KS; nephew, Joe Lawhead; sister-in-law Shirley Everett; and numerous nephews, nieces, family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Dorothy Everett; brother, Michael Everett; and brother-in-law Mike Holland.

A family-directed graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at Gaylord Cemetery in Gaylord, KS.

Francis Richard Everett

Elward James “Eldy” Hiss, Jr., 96, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend died October 17, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kan. He was born July 10, 1927, in Great Bend, the second son of Elward J. Hiss, Sr. and Carrie (Williams) Hiss. 

He married JoAnn Gallon on October 26, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, and they were married for 73 years until her passing on May 7, 2020. &nbsp;

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Eldy was born and raised on the family farm in Buffalo Township. &nbsp;Eldy was a partner in Hiss Dairy and Hiss, Inc. Farm. 

He attended District 33 rural school and graduated from Great Bend High School Class of 1945, in which he was senior class president. 

He was a member and on the governing boards for First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend, Presbyterian Men’s Club, treasurer of Buffalo Township for 25 years, a charter member of Great Bend Evening Lions Club, a lifetime member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #1127, past board member and president of Great Bend Co-op Association and a member of the Barton County Historical Society. He enjoyed traveling, photography, friends and his family but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include his children, Richard L. "Rick" Hiss and wife Tina, Sandra K. “Sandy” Hiss, and Elward James Hiss, III "Jim" and wife Melinda, all of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Michelle (Aaron) Peck of Salina, Bradley (Nikki) Hiss of Great Bend, E.J. Hiss (finacé Kayla Cooley) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Veronica (Tim) Bush of Great Bend; three great-grandchildren, Adia Grace Peck, Noah Preston Peck and Anthony Richard Hiss; and a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Hiss Brower (Al) of Colorado. 

&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, JoAnn Hiss; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Mabel Hiss; and a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia (Hiss) and Phil Friedeman.

Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, Great Bend, with Rev. Kathleen Luke presiding. &nbsp;A private family inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Great Bend Evening Lions Club or Barton County Historical Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home. &nbsp;

Elward James 'Eldy' Hiss, Jr.

Marion Lee Squier was born in Hays, KS on February 7, 1951, the second child of William Russell Squier, Sr. and Veta Walker Squier. &nbsp;He passed from this life at his home in Austin, TX on September 24, 2023. &nbsp;

 </figure>February 7, 1951 - September 24, 2023Marion Lee Squier was born in Hays, KS on February 7, 1951, the second child of William Russell Squier, Sr. and Veta Walker Squier. &nbsp;He passed from this life at his home in Austin, TX on September 24, 2023. &nbsp;He leaves to mourn his passing, wife Colette Pearce of the home, daughters Stefanie Squier of the home and Cecily Squier and husband Dave Kehr of Austin, grandsons Nels Visser and Karsten Visser of Austin, cousins Jim and Patti Sellers Scott of Hays, and Dorris Ummel Scott of Hays.Lee grew up on the family farm outside of Brownell, KS. &nbsp;He attended Brownell Grade School and Ransom High School. &nbsp;He participated in several sports and was a member of the Brownell Little League team that won State in 1963. &nbsp;In high school he was a star track athlete and set a record for half mile that still stands. &nbsp;The Yankees were his favorite professional team and remained so until the day he died. &nbsp;In 1969 Lee enrolled at Pratt Jr. College on a football scholarship. &nbsp;Unfortunately, the passing of his brother Bill in Viet Nam made it impossible for him to compete. &nbsp;Later Lee enrolled in Emporia State College.Lee moved to Austin in 1975 with his wife-to-be Colette Pearce of Beeler. &nbsp;They made their lives there and raised two daughters. &nbsp;He worked in residential construction from the beginning and continued until shortly before his death. His proudest accomplishment was building his family a new home in 2003.The greatest joy in Lee’s life was becoming a grandfather. &nbsp;Nels and Karsten were the apples of his eye. &nbsp;He spent as much time as possible with them, taking them fishing, hiking, kayaking, and every other thing they could think of. &nbsp;The boys will remember their Papi with fondness forever.Lee was preceded in death by his grandparents, Morrison and Maude Hearting Squier and Marion and Dove Stull Walker; parents William Russell Squier, Sr. and Veta Walker Squier; siblings Sgt. William Russell (Bill) Squier, Jr., Doveta Ann Squier, Ph.D. and life partner Tim Vannatta, John C. Squier; cousins David Scott, Richard McMillen, and Wayne McMillen.A graveside service will be held at the Vansburgh Cemetery (one mile west and two miles south of Brownell, KS) on November 4, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. &nbsp;Immediately after the service there will be a luncheon at the Sunley-Squier American Legion in Brownell.Memorials to the Ness County Historical Society can be made in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp; Thanks go to Joel Fitzgerald and his staff and Terry Weeks for their kind assistance.Lee had a strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. &nbsp;He requested that the following notice be provided:Lee will be laid to rest at the Vansburgh Cemetery where he will await the Resurrection.Words of comfort and support may be left for the family by signing the guestbook.
