Irene Emma Satchell, 98, of Russell, Kansas, and former Bunker Hill, Kansas, resident died on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Irene was born on July 15, 1925, in Bunker Hill, Kansas, the daughter of David J. and Anna (Steinle) Waymaster.&nbsp; She grew up in Bunker Hill and attended Bunker Hill Schools and lived there and Russell, Kansas, most all her life.&nbsp; 

She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to E. Paul Satchell on April 28, 1950, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Irene and Paul were blessed with five children-Lester, Becky, Roy, Eddie and Paul.&nbsp; 

She worked for many years at the Russell County Hospital as a cook.&nbsp; She also work hard as a homemaker taking care of her family.&nbsp; 

She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking, baking, and watching NFL Football and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed spending time and taking care of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Speicher of Russell, Kansas; daughter in-law Judy Satchell of Bunker Hill, Kansas, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul on January 29, 1969, sons Lester G. Satchell, Roy Satchell, Eddie Satchell, and Paul Satchell; brothers Fritz and Leroy Waymaster; sisters Pauline Ehrlich, Esther Propp, Lydia Steinle, Alma Michaelis and Elsie Cain. 

A celebration of Irene’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the mortuary.&nbsp;

Irene E. Satchell

Leonard Brown was born June 23, 1943 to Donald and Evelyn Brown on the family farm southwest of Lucas.

Leonard attended District 44 Elementary School – a one-room school southwest of Lucas, he graduated from Lucas High School, then attended Fort Hays State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in ag-business.

He married Doris Branda on November 9th, 1962 and enjoyed over 60 years of marriage. 

They farmed southwest of Lucas until his retirement. 

During his younger years Leonard served as a Wolf Creek Valley 4-H Club leader, was on the Russell County Fair Board, and the board of the Farmers Co-op in Lucas. Leonard was a bank director at Peoples State Bank in Luray and on the advisory board at UMB Bank in Russell. 

In his retirement, Leonard enjoyed traveling, boating, antique tractor drives, spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren, and spending the winters in Port Isabel, Texas. He and Doris traveled to over 50 countries, including the Seven Wonders of the World.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris of the home; two sisters, Judy Kleeman of Lakin, Kansas, and Virginia Boepple (Dennis) of Oviedo, Florida, two sons, Greg Brown (Gina) of Bayview, Texas and Kirk Brown (Cathy) of Russell, one daughter, Michelle Gatlin (Terry) of Pratt; grandchildren Matthew Brown (Christine), Nicholas Brown (Sarah), Derreck Brown (Afton), Britni Pope (Cody), Elijah, Samuel, Gabby, and Luke Gatlin; and nine great-grandchildren: Colt and Mack Brown, Damien, Ellie and Esther Brown, Hadlee, Rush and Kennedy Brown, Piper and Holden Pope.

Leonard passed away on September 6, 2023 at home in Russell surrounded by his loving family. Leonard fought a brave battle after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Evelyn Brown, and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Brown.

A memorial service for Leonard will be held Saturday, September 16th&nbsp;at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. A private burial with family will be held at Lucas Cemetery.

D. Leonard Brown

Thomas William Wasinger, 84, a lifelong resident of Hays and a current resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center.&nbsp;Born on October 29, 1938, in Hays, Tom was a son of Alfred F. and Catherine (Nussbaum) Wasinger.&nbsp;

After completing his education at Hays High School, Tom answered the call of duty and enlisted with the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in October 1962.

 Shortly thereafter, on December 29, 1962, he embarked on a lifelong journey of love and partnership, marrying Rita M. Lauber in Victoria, Kansas.

Tom was a dedicated and hardworking individual, dedicating 38 years of his life to Midwest Energy in Hays, where he worked in the gas department until his well-deserved retirement in 1998. 

When he wasn't busy with work, Tom cherished his spare time. He was a passionate league bowler and an avid fisherman, finding solace and enjoyment in these pursuits.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Rita, who resides at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis. He is also survived by his son, Thomas W. Wasinger Jr., and two daughters, Charlotte and Julie, all of Hays.

Tom leaves behind a brother, Alfred F. Wasinger, and two sisters, Louise Walters and Sharon Lang. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred F. and Catherine, as well as two brothers, Roger and Gene.

Funeral services to celebrate Tom's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Prior to the service, friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation, which will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until service time. Following the service, Tom will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

Joyce Lorraine Dean, 89, of Norton, passed away September 6, 2023 surrounded by her daughters at the Norton County Hospital. She was born September 23, 1933 in Kanorado, KS to Harvey John and Blanche Marie Harper.

Joyce grew up in Goodland and was a 1951 graduate of Goodland High School. 

After high school, she worked at the Goodland telephone office. 

Joyce married W. Edward Dean on May 4, 1952 in Colby, KS. 

She worked side by side with Ed managing and owning grocery stores. Later she worked in Oberlin as the high school clerk and Deputy Register of Deeds and then sold real estate. 

In her spare time, she loved going fishing; like clockwork, you could find her at Sappa Park drinking her coffee and catching catfish. When the girls were growing up she often made their clothing and she crocheted beautiful doilies. In her younger years, she loved reading and writing poetry and later her favorite hobby was playing on the computer. She spent a lot of time playing games with her sister Lucy and also enjoyed scrolling through Facebook. 

One thing she was most proud of was cooking, she made a full home-cooked meal every day until she went to the Andbe Home and loved sharing her talent with family and friends. Joyce held different church memberships throughout the years but always practiced the Methodist faith.

Joyce is survived by her husband W. Joyce Lorraine Dean

John Heman Owen Jr., loving husband, son and eldest of eight children, passed away Aug. 2, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

John “Butch” Owen was born Sept. 9, 1952, to John and Bessie Owen in Charleston, S.C. Spending much of his youth in South Carolina, he participated in the Sea Cadets. At age 13, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., and then on to Aurora, Colo., where he attended Hinkley High School.

Ever the adventurer and a bit of a rebel, Butch moved around a lot during his young adulthood. Butch and a friend spent time traveling to New York, in none other than an ice cream truck, to attend Woodstock 1969. However, the truck broke down and they never made it there. He also ventured on a hitchhiking trip to Seattle, Wash.

Butch was talented and resourceful and was involved in various professions during his adult life. He spent time working in construction and for the last 10 years working as a contract pumper in the local oil patch.

Butch’s true passion was making music! Introduced to the guitar by his younger brother Fred, Butch seemed to have a natural ability to learn and play the instrument by ear. He was a multi-talented musician: playing guitar, bass guitar and harmonica.

He spent much of his life involved with several musical groups including Night Machine, Country Highway, Hammerhead, Crimzon Rose, Faith Wide Open, Ronnie and the Rockets, the Rockits and always The Owen Family Band. In addition, just like his dad and brothers, Butch was very good at throwing horseshoes.

Butch was preceded in death by his father, John H. Owen Sr. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Lisa (VanDruff) Owen of Zurich; his mother Bessie Owen of Hill City; seven siblings: Fred of Hill City, Judy Bossard and husband Alan of Fredrick, Colo., Belinda Griffin of Hill City, Jessica Schlingloff and husband Steve of Hill City, James and wife Shari of Pensacola, Fla., Jeff and fiancée Mary of Garden Grove, Calif., and Jeramy of Hill City; former wives: Marilyn and Vicky; and Vicky’s children: Joey Friars, Rick Friars and Wendy (Friars) Burkholder; and many, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dean Henry Boxberger, 92, of Russell, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, August 16 2023 at Main Street Manor in Russell.&nbsp; Dean passed peacefully with family by his side, 24 days after the passing of his wife of 69 years, Betty.

Dean was born on October 22, 1930, in Russell, the son of Solomon and Elfreda (Reinhardt, Boxberger) Stenzel.

He grew up and attended schools in Russell, graduating from Russell High School in 1948.&nbsp; Dean was baptized in the Lutheran church in Milberger and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church, Russell.&nbsp; 

He met and fell in love with Betty Ann Balloun.&nbsp; After a seven-week courtship, they were united in marriage on May 16, 1954, in St John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; From this union, they were blessed with five sons: Matthew, Mark, Thomas, Timothy, and Scott. Dean and Betty shared 69 years of married life together.

Dean loved the land and was a farmer and rancher all his life.&nbsp; He farmed for many years with his brother Raymond in Russell and Gove counties and then on his own on the family farm south of Russell. &nbsp; He also worked in the oilfield and drove the activity bus for USD 407 for 35 years.&nbsp; 

Dean served his country in the Kansas National Guard, Russell County as a commissioner for 10 years and Grant Township as treasurer.&nbsp; He was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, serving on the council as treasurer and ushering and greeting at worship services.&nbsp; He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine, and Russell Elks Lodge.&nbsp;

Dean was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.&nbsp; He enjoyed sports, hunting, bowling, playing cards, and chatting over coffee with his friends.&nbsp; 

Preceding him in death were his wife Betty Ann (Balloun), his parents, brother Raymond E. Boxberger, sister DorLeen (Boxberger) Hunter and sister-in-law Celia Boxberger.&nbsp; 

Survivors include sons Matthew Boxberger (Genevieve) of San Jose, California, Mark Boxberger (Amy) of Noblesville, Indiana, Thomas Boxberger (Sheri) of Lawrence, Kansas, Timothy Boxberger (Dylan Palma) of Russell, Kansas and Scott Boxberger (Desiree) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren George, Joe, Betsy (Karim Khalil), Jakob, Elyse, Gretchen, Cassie, Joshua, and Jenna;&nbsp; great-grandson Rami; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Dean’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; A private family burial will be held at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Douglas Dean “Doug” Karst, 60, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell surrounded by family.

He was born December 21, 1962 in Hays, the son of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. 

He graduated from Hays High School in 1982 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doug worked as a contract pumper, bus driver, and was a route driver for Hays Daily News.

 He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafts, playing poker, especially Texas Hold’em, and was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan. 

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Karst and wife Mary of Hays and Mark Karst and wife Shannon of Victoria, two sisters, Dianne Schmidt and husband Gene of Great Bend and Maryln Schumacher and husband Larry of Lyons, two brothers-in-law, Pat Herrman of Sturgis, SD and Lance Smith and wife Courtney of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steven Karst, three sisters, Lois Herrman, Patty Karst, and Lanita Smith, and a nephew, Dustin Karst.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church.

Vernon Delano Radke, 90, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Vernon was born July 9, 1933 on the family farm near Milberger, Kansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Tobias and Amelia (Bitter) Radke.&nbsp; 

He grew up in the Milberger area and attended schools in Milberger and Russell.&nbsp; He graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1951.

Vernon was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Lynch on February 22, 1959 in Russell.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children, Mark and Robyn.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.&nbsp; Pat preceded him in death on June 24, 2020.

Vernon worked in the office of the federal government agriculture – A.S.C.S.&nbsp; He also drove the school bus for USD 407 for many years.&nbsp; He was a very active member of St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed ironing sheets for the church ladies making quilts.&nbsp; He enjoyed making miniature postrock fence posts, working and tinkering in his shop and when he was younger, enjoyed fishing.

Vernon’s surviving family include his daughter Robyn Williams of Russell, Kansas; son Mark Radke (Reba) of Sterling, Kansas; sisters Rosalinda Addington (Dale) of Topeka, Kansas and Norma Koehler of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren, Kelsey Shattuck (Jason), Cherish Richards and Christopher Radke; and four great-grandchildren.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; wife Patricia; sister Doris Steinert; and brother Carl Radke.

A graveside memorial service celebrating Vernon’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 14, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.&nbsp; No visitation being held.&nbsp;

Garland “Garb” LeRoy Ensley, 100, passed away September 6, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born November 11, 1922, in Jefferson, Kan., to Heber T. and Lettie L. (Skinner) Ensley. 

As a young boy, Garb learned to weld having worked alongside his father in their “Ensley and Son” welding shop in Woodston, Kan.&nbsp;

Garb met the love of his life, Evalee M. Cooper, at a skating rink in his early twenties. They were married on June 25, 1947, in Stockton. In 1965, he and Evalee moved the family from Plainville to Great Bend. 

Then in 1974 Garb founded his own welding company “Garb’s Welding, Inc.” &nbsp;To this day, his sons continue to run the business and he would watch the cars go by on the highway from his front porch swing, often seeing one of the company trucks going by the house.&nbsp;

Garb was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, a man of God and was involved in his faith. Though this was tested after the untimely passing of Evalee in September of 1995, he remained strong for his children and embraced the moments that he considered unforgettable. Spending time with his family was very important and they had many family fun outtings over the years including fishing, hunting, ball games, picnics, county fairs and roller skating.&nbsp;

When visiting with Garb, you were sure to have a learning experience. His recollection to capture special memories would make you smile when you least expected it. In the passing of Garb, may you remember one of his many sayings, “Accept the way life is now and be happy!”, “Enjoy your day!”, “Thank you much!” or “Take care!”&nbsp;

Survivors include four sons, Ronald Ensley, Kevin Ensley and wife Tammy, Dr. Dennis Ensley and Gregory Ensley and wife Jan, all of Great Bend; two daughters, Connie Ensley of Great Bend, and Bonnie Achatz and husband John of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Evalee; a daughter-in-law, Diane Ensley; one brother, Edwin; six sisters, Lucille, Neva, Virginia, Donna Lou, and twin sisters Retta and Gretta. &nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Rick Griffin presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Garland 'Garb' LeRoy Ensley

Alta Irene (Romjue) Mulder, daughter of Roy Lamont and Nina May (Norton) Romjue was born November 16, 1929 in Phillips County, KS and passed away September 7, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society in Alma, NE at the age of 93.

She attended grade school in District 26 Springbrook in Harlan County, NE. &nbsp;Then she attended two years of High School in Long Island, KS.

On April 20, 1946 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Mulder in Phillipsburg, KS. &nbsp;She lived on a farm in Glenwood Township. &nbsp;She was a housewife. &nbsp;To this union four sons were born: &nbsp;Daniel, Ronald, Donald, and Richard.

She attended Englewood Church in Phillips County until it closed. &nbsp;Later she attended Crystal Creek Country Church in Phillips County.

Alta was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth on December 22, 2013, daughter-in-law Sandy Mulder, sisters Norma Hanes and Della Sell, and a brother Dale Romjue.

Alta leaves to mourn her passing her sons Dan and wife Terry of Phillipsburg, Ron of Republican City, NE, Don and wife Von of Yutan, NE, and Richard of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; also nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was a resident of Solomon, Kansas, for 19 years, moving from Colby, Kansas. 

A 1974 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he graduated from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He then began a career in conservation science which spanned 39+ years and ended with him as a district conservationist in Abilene, Kansas, retiring in 2014.

On July 14, 1984, he married Eilene Casey at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Throughout Mark’s life, he enjoyed playing and watching sports, fishing, hunting, and golfing. He enjoyed playing with all of his nephews and nieces.

Survivors include his wife, Eilene Schmidt, Solomon, Kansas; four brothers, Gary Schmidt (Phyllis), La Crosse, Kansas, Joe Schmidt (Bernadette), Wamego, Kansas, John Schmidt (Suzanne), Hoisington, Kansas, and Richard Schmidt, La Crosse, Kansas; one sister, Mary Beth Wagner, Rush Center, Kansas; many nephews and nieces; and many close and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Michael Schmidt, and Galen Schmidt; and two sisters, Judy Addams, and Debra Hollis.

Twyla Mae Elliott, 87, died Monday, September 4, 2023, at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born August 8, 1935, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of John and Louise (Meier) Brach. 

Twyla grew up in the Otis, Kansas area where she attended school. 

On November 16, 1961, she married D.N. “Neil” Elliott in Wichita, Kansas. They lived in Deerfield, Kansas until 1984 when they moved to Garden City. 

A homemaker, Twyla enjoyed cooking, sewing, and drawing. She was a member of the English Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. 

Survivors include three sons Marlon and wife Benedicta Elliott of Garden City, Kansas, Vance and wife Cindy Elliott of Hesston, Kansas, and Lonnie Elliott of Fabens, Texas; two brothers Ronald Brach of Haysville, Kansas and Dennis Brach of Udall, Kansas; a sister, Janice Alexander of Climax, Kansas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

Twyla is preceded in death by her husband Neil who died on May 31, 2017. She is also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Duane Brach, Richard Brach, and Donald Brach.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

She was born on June 27, 1938, in Ellis, Kansas to Edward and Agnes (Stecklein) Honas. She married Leo F. Schmeidler on October 3, 1959, in Ellis, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1997.

Delores was an ARNP for over fifty years in the nursing and teaching health care industry. She was employed at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Stormont Vail Hospital, the Eddy Clinic, North Central Kansas Technical College, the Victoria Clinic, Good Samaritan Society of Hays, and Beverly Enterprise Nursing Homes.

She grew up in Ellis and was a 1956 graduate of Ellis High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University and two master’s degrees from Wichita State University. In Delores’s early years she worked for Delmas Haney as a legal stenographer, and then for Norbert Dreiling, attorney, as a legal secretary.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, oil painting, gardening, fishing, and going to the casinos. Her pride and joy was spoiling her grandchildren and her great-grandson.

Her survivors include her son, Brian Schmeidler, Victoria, KS; her daughter, Tamra “Tammy” Peters and husband, Daniel, Olathe, KS; eight grandchildren, Lindsey Schmeidler and husband, Ethan Peck, Fayetteville, AR; Sidney Schmeidler and fiancée, Dalton Kraus, Victoria, KS; Audra Schmeidler, Hays, KS; Leo N. Myrna Joyce Branstetter-Schartz, 74, passed away on September 3, 2023, at Chisholm Place in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on September 21, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Pauline (Ferrell) Beal. 

On December 12, 1993, she married James “Jake” Branstetter in Las Vegas, Nevada; he passed away on July 20, 2007. Myrna married Joseph “Joe” Jakl in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 22, 2015. He survives.&nbsp;

A long-time resident of Great Bend, having spent some time in Denver, Colorado, and Manhattan, Kansas, Myrna worked as an outside sales representative for OPI. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and former member of the Great Bend Pilot Club.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, of the home; stepson Jeffrey Branstetter of Minneola, Kansas; stepdaughters Jana (Don) Thimesch and Julie Pacino, all of Kingman, Kansas; a niece, Kerry J. Lampe; great-nephew Cameron Lampe of Shawnee, Kansas; great-niece Taylor (Drew) FitzGerald of Lawrence, Kansas; numerous cousins including Virginia Shawver of Wichita, Kansas, Bonnie Springfield, Virginia (Bob) Ricky of Cassville, Missouri, Pete (Brenda) Fuller of Stafford, Kansas, Nila Rouck of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Linda Stone of El Reno, Oklahoma.&nbsp;

Adelia Lavond Cate was born Thursday, August 9, 1928 in Almena, Kansas. She was the second child of Clarence and Helen Cate. She passed away September 2, 2023 at the age of 95 at the Andbe Home in Norton.

Adelia’s brother and only sibling Robert was 4 ½ years older. In April 1943, Dorothy and Dolores Woodard came to live with her family and became her sisters. She entered first grade at Almena Grade School where her teacher was Miss Opal Voight (later became Opal Graham). The principal was Mr. J.E. Rankin. Adelia graduated eighth grade and entered high school the next year. 

After graduation in the Class of 1946, she enrolled in Central Business College of Denver, Co. She completed her training there and worked in Denver for several years. Her jobs in Denver were as secretary and in accounting at the Denver Post and Denver Fire/Clay.

She became friends in high school with Dean Wilnerd. He served in Uncle Sam’s Army in the South Pacific during World War II. After being wounded in Japan he was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. When he was discharged he came back to Almena and started farming. 

They were married on February 4, 1951 at the Almena Congregational Church and lived in the Almena area. Their two daughters were born while living southwest of Calvert on 36 highway. Nancy Ann Hogan was born January 22, 1955 and Gayle Lea Tacha was born February 20, 1958. They purchased their home on Rd I in 1960.

Adelia began her career as a school secretary while still in high school. She enrolled in an office practice class and worked for Mr. Rankin. After she married, she began working for Mr. Rankin in the high school office and worked for the schools for 35 years before retiring in 1990. During those years, there were 10 different superintendents. At one time she worked for ½ day for the high school and ½ for the grade school. When school unification came along, she applied to the Unification Board and worked for them during the interim time. There were many struggles, but Northern Valley Schools was organized and has been a blessing for the two communities. Adelia had many duties; she was the secretary to the superintendent, clerk of the board, bookkeeper for the district and high school office secretary. As duties increased, elementary secretaries were added to the office staff.

Adelia was a member of the Congregational Church of Almena, and they both served in many capacities within the church. 

She was a 60-year member and Past Noble Grand of the Rebeka Lodge, a 75 year member and past president of Paul D. Linnell Legion Auxiliary (she is still a current member) and a member and past president of the Almena Study Club. During the years she worked she was a member of the Kansas Education Secretaries Association and the Kansas Association of School Business Officials. Continuing education was available through these professional organizations, and she learned methods to improve the processes to make the business office run more proficiently.

School has been an important part of our family life and her two daughters have worked within the schools. Nancy was a para in Long Island and is currently driving a school bus route and Gayle was the secretary and treasurer of the Hoxie Schools and retired as the clerk of the board.

More than anything Adelia loved her family. The birth of her grandchildren and great children brought her great joy.

Adelia is survived by her children Nancy Ann (Wilnerd) Hogan and husband David of Long Island, KS and Gayle Lea (Wilnerd) Tacha and husband Royal of Hoxie, KS; grandchildren Justin Hogan and wife Debbie, Travis Hogan and wife Mandy, Dillon Hogan and wife Cheyenne, Ashley (Tacha) Brooks and husband Austin, and Garrett Tacha and wife Sarah Jo; great-grandchildren Hunter, Kylor, and Jensen Hogan, Mason, Delila, Karlene and Boone Hogan, Brynna and Ayden Brown, and Josephine, Tucker and Boston Tacha; sister Dolores (Woodard) Lessor; sister and brother-in-law Betty Joyce (Wilnerd-Davis) and David Carter; nieces and nephews Philip and Megan Cate, Richard and Barbara Cate, Deborah (Cate) and Richard Rawlings, Wendi (Davis) and Roger Stamback; Fred and Lori Chandler, Kristi (Chandler) and Sam Schnuerle, Karla (Chandler) and Bart Kenton, Karen (Chandler) and Loren Kats, Kelly Lessor, Kim (Lessor) and Karl Baker; many great-nieces and nephews, and cousin Billy Jean Westerman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dean; brother Robert (Margorie) Cate; sister Dorothy (Keith) Chandler; sister-in-law Wanda Mae (Jack) Mechsner; brother-in-law Harold DeWayne Davis; nephews Michael Davis, Scott Davis, and Ronald Cate, and niece Debra Davis.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Almena, KS. The urn was made by her great-grandson, Hunter Hogan.

She was the second child of Clarence and Helen Cate. She passed away September 2, 2023 at the age of 95 at the Andbe Home in Norton.Adelia’s brother and only sibling Robert was 4 ½ years older. In April 1943, Dorothy and Dolores Woodard came to live with her family and became her sisters. She entered first grade at Almena Grade School where her teacher was Miss Opal Voight (later became Opal Graham). The principal was Mr. J.E. Rankin. Adelia graduated eighth grade and entered high school the next year. After graduation in the Class of 1946, she enrolled in Central Business College of Denver, Co. She completed her training there and worked in Denver for several years. Her jobs in Denver were as secretary and in accounting at the Denver Post and Denver Fire/Clay.She became friends in high school with Dean Wilnerd. He served in Uncle Sam’s Army in the South Pacific during World War II. After being wounded in Japan he was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. When he was discharged he came back to Almena and started farming. They were married on February 4, 1951 at the Almena Congregational Church and lived in the Almena area. Their two daughters were born while living southwest of Calvert on 36 highway. Nancy Ann Hogan was born January 22, 1955 and Gayle Lea Tacha was born February 20, 1958. They purchased their home on Rd I in 1960.Adelia began her career as a school secretary while still in high school. She enrolled in an office practice class and worked for Mr. Rankin. After she married, she began working for Mr. Rankin in the high school office and worked for the schools for 35 years before retiring in 1990. During those years, there were 10 different superintendents. At one time she worked for ½ day for the high school and ½ for the grade school. When school unification came along, she applied to the Unification Board and worked for them during the interim time. There were many struggles, but Northern Valley Schools was organized and has been a blessing for the two communities. Adelia had many duties; she was the secretary to the superintendent, clerk of the board, bookkeeper for the district and high school office secretary. As duties increased, elementary secretaries were added to the office staff.Adelia was a member of the Congregational Church of Almena, and they both served in many capacities within the church. She was a 60-year member and Past Noble Grand of the Rebeka Lodge, a 75 year member and past president of Paul D. Linnell Legion Auxiliary (she is still a current member) and a member and past president of the Almena Study Club. During the years she worked she was a member of the Kansas Education Secretaries Association and the Kansas Association of School Business Officials. Continuing education was available through these professional organizations, and she learned methods to improve the processes to make the business office run more proficiently.School has been an important part of our family life and her two daughters have worked within the schools. Nancy was a para in Long Island and is currently driving a school bus route and Gayle was the secretary and treasurer of the Hoxie Schools and retired as the clerk of the board.More than anything Adelia loved her family. The birth of her grandchildren and great children brought her great joy.“Superintendent Bill Lowry brightened my day when he called to tell me I had been nominated for the Wall of Fame. It was a surprise and an honor that means more to me than I can say. The moments I shared, the friends I made, all the board members, administrators, the teachers and staff, parents and students through the years are engraved in my memory. Sylvia – Hilda Flores, 66, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023 in Sylvia, Ks, surrounded by her family.

She was born November 21, 1956 in La Pastoria, Zacatecas, Mexico, the daughter of Jose and Soledad “Chole” Rojas Acevedo. &nbsp;Hilda moved from Los Angeles, CA to Kansas in 1987 and was a restaurant owner. &nbsp;

She attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville. &nbsp;

She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and family. &nbsp;She enjoyed cooking, gardening and going to the casino. &nbsp;Her home was always open to others and she loved being around family and friends.

On February 2, 1980, she married Jose Flores in Los Angeles, CA. &nbsp;He survives.
