Joyce Joylea Fischer, age 66, passed away at her home on September 10, 2023. She was born to Alfred (Dale) and Donna (Gilliland) Hazen on March 20, 1957 in McCook, NE.

Joyce grew up in Maywood, NE and graduated from Medicine Valley High School in 1975. 

She married Duane James Fischer on March 12, 1978. They celebrated their 45th anniversary this year. They had three children from this union, Rikki, Crystal, and Shine.

Joyce stayed at home with the kids after they were born. She worked as a lifeguard during the summers, and taught preschool and Sunday school. She took floral and woodworking classes, and earned her first responder while in Curtis.

 After moving to Kansas, Joyce worked as a bank teller, librarian, postal worker, EMT for the Lenora ambulance service, firefighter, and director of the Norton County EMS. The family enjoyed raising dogs, especially Boston Terriers and English Bulldogs. 

Joyce later earned an associate degree from Colby Community College in nursing. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at a traveling agency, the Andbe Home in Norton, KS and Norton County Hospital in Norton, KS. She worked as a registered nurse in several places including Abilene, KS in the emergency room and Whispering Pines in Norton, KS. She later worked as the administrator at Whispering Pines before retiring. 

After retirement, Joyce worked for the postal service and had the most amazing garden. Joyce loved crafting, thrifting, spending time with her grandkids and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Donna Hazen; husband, Duane Fischer and brother, Arlas Shawn Hazen. 

She is survived by her daughters Rikki Renee Wait and her husband RD of Norton, KS and Crystal Marie Fischer and her fiancé Nolan Younce of Conway Springs, KS; son Shine RichardDale Fischer and wife Erinn of Hyderabad, India; brothers Allen Dean Hazen and Dennis Dale Hazen and wife Deb all of Curtis, NE; grandchildren Rayanne Emily Wait, Kira Marie Forrest, Alise Joylea Wait, Cody Duane Wait, Jessi Jean Wait, Hunter Lee Fyler, Oakley Elizabeth Fischer, and Finley Kay Fischer; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Joyce will be cremated, and a family service will be held at a later date.

Joyce Joylea Fischer

John Clifford Loflin, age 95, of Ogallah, Kansas, passed away peacefully with his wife and family by his side at the family farm on Monday, September 11, 2023.&nbsp; He was born on June 15, 1928, in Ogallah to loving parents, Clifford John and Katherine Barbara (Breit) Loflin. 

On February 4, 1950, he married the love of his life, Irene Mae Zerfas, in Hays, Kansas, and they shared an incredible journey together spanning 73 beautiful years.

John proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran. 

Following his military service, John established himself as a dedicated entrepreneur in 1965 with Loflin Earth Moving and soil conservation business. It was very important for John to be a part of the (KLICA) Kansas Land Improvement Contractors Association for 55 years in conjunction with his business.&nbsp; 

He was also a part-time farmer, always with a passion for nurturing the land. In his younger years, John embarked on a career in construction, traveling from one job to another, often accompanied by his beloved Irene. Their adventures forged enduring friendships with coworkers and their spouses, bonds that remain strong to this day. Work was not just a necessity for John; it was his passion, and he relished the challenges of maintaining and operating heavy equipment. He was a true craftsman and a "shade tree engineer."

After retiring, John and Irene seized the opportunity to explore the United States during the winter months, including remarkable journeys to Alaska in their "souped-up" Fortravel. These travels brought them immense joy and allowed them to cultivate lifelong friendships along the way. 

In the rare moments he allowed himself a hobby, John dedicated his time to restoring classic vehicles, including Clifford's Jeep Pickup, IH Truck, assorted Jeeps, and a Model T. In his daily routine, John could be found at the shop, tending to equipment, and caring for the animals around the farm and shop. His dedication to his craft and his love for the land were evident to all who knew him.

John is survived by his loving wife Irene, with whom he shared 73 years of cherished memories. He is also survived by his children: John Michael "Mike" Loflin (Brenda) of Hays, Richard Loflin of Pryor, Oklahoma, Susan Anderson (Bill) of Topeka, Kansas, and Sandy Loflin Reetz of WaKeeney, Kansas; and a sister,&nbsp;Marjorie Miller. His legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren Tammy Gros, Corey Anderson, Isaac Anderson, Dylan Loflin, Dion Reetz, Ceri Coffield, and Reine Meyer. Additionally, he leaves behind great-grandchildren Sage Murphy, Henry Anderson, Elise Anderson, Owen Anderson, Marin Coffield, Emilia Coffield, Braden Gros, John Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Rinzlee Loflin, and soon to join, Oaklee Reetz.

John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Judy Ann, and a sister, Barbara Rathbun.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial to follow in the Mt. Mary Ruth White, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on October 22, 1927, in Scott County, Kansas the daughter of Paul and Pauline Gaschler. 

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was a beautician and a homemaker.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Altar Society and the VFW Auxiliary.

On April 20, 1949, she married Harold W. White in Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on June 5, 2019, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her one daughter Susan and Brad Boulware of Scott City, Kansas, two granddaughters - Brooke and Noah Johnson of Sharon Springs, Kansas, &nbsp;Kadra Boulware of Wichita, Kansas, and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings.

Vigil services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2023, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.

Raquel Gomez, 72, died Friday, September 8, 2023 at Hays Med Center in Hays, Kansas. She was born February 16, 1951 in Carrizo Springs, Texas, the daughter of Bernardino Gomez and Isabella Chavez.

Raquel was born and raised in Carrizo Springs.

She worked at Del Monte Factory before moving to Charlotte, TX then later moved to Garden City where she became a homemaker. 

Raquel loved playing bingo. Other hobbies include gardening and crocheting blankets for her children who she loved very much.

She is survived by her children, Anna Luisa Gomez of Marysville, WA, Estela Felan of Garden City, KS, Josephina Gomez of Garden City, KS, Maribel Gomez of Moriarty, NM, Agapito Gomez of Lyons, KS and Norma Jean Gomez of Garden City, KS, two sisters, Maria Rosario Uyemura of Las Animas, CO and Ramona Torres of Lamar, CO, 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, son John Lee Gomez, step-Brother Joe Villa and one great-great-grandchild.

Margaret Rose Unruh, age 85, went to her heavenly home on July 21, 2023 with her family by her side. &nbsp;She was born in Bronx, New York on September 23, 1937 to Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft in Stanford, CT. 

She married her college sweetheart, Rev. Victor C. Unruh on September 9, 1961. &nbsp;They met at Central Bible Institute and had 62 years of marriage.

Margaret was a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. She and her husband, Victor pastored in many churches in Kansas and Iowa throughout their 50 years of ministry. She led children’s church, vacation Bible schools, kids crusades, Bible studies, and women’s ministries. &nbsp;She was on the district leadership team for the Kansas Women’s Ministries department for many years. 

After moving to Tarpon Springs her heart of service continued by working at her church and volunteering at the Advent Health Hospital gift shop.

Her cherished pastime besides reading was to her children and grandchildren. She embraced any moments of time to spend communicating with them through texting, phone calls, and emails. Prayers were sent up every morning during her devotion time with Victor. Her love for the Lord could always be seen through her kind, gentle sweet spirit in all her relationships with others. She truly wanted others to know and love the Lord as she did.

In addition to her husband, Victor, she is survived by her children, Laurie Madsen (Kent) of Montgomery, IL and Cheri Stancer (Robb) of Livonia, MI; her brother, George Ashcroft of Trinity, FL; five grandchildren, Kailea Leal (Isai), Brianna Stancer, Kameron Stancer, Kirsten Madsen and Trey Madsen; and two great-granddaughters Adelina and Raya Leal. 

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft; and her two sisters, Barbara Tollefson and Irene Gunderson.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Dundee Valley Cemetery, Dundee, KS, with Reverend Robb Stancer presiding. &nbsp;A luncheon will follow at the Encounter Church in Great Bend, KS. &nbsp;

 </figure><h2>Margaret Rose Unruh</h2>September 23, 1937 - July 21, 2023<a href="https://www.bryantfh.net/obituary/margaret-unruh?fh_id=10931">https://www.bryantfh.net/obituary/margaret-unruh?fh_id=10931</a>Margaret Rose Unruh, age 85, went to her heavenly home on July 21, 2023 with her family by her side. &nbsp;She was born in Bronx, New York on September 23, 1937 to Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft in Stanford, CT. She married her college sweetheart, Rev. Victor C. Unruh on September 9, 1961. &nbsp;They met at Central Bible Institute and had 62 years of marriage.Margaret was a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. She and her husband, Victor pastored in many churches in Kansas and Iowa throughout their 50 years of ministry. She led children’s church, vacation Bible schools, kids crusades, Bible studies, and women’s ministries. &nbsp;She was on the district leadership team for the Kansas Women’s Ministries department for many years. After moving to Tarpon Springs her heart of service continued by working at her church and volunteering at the Advent Health Hospital gift shop.Her cherished pastime besides reading was to her children and grandchildren. She embraced any moments of time to spend communicating with them through texting, phone calls, and emails. Prayers were sent up every morning during her devotion time with Victor. Her love for the Lord could always be seen through her kind, gentle sweet spirit in all her relationships with others. She truly wanted others to know and love the Lord as she did.In addition to her husband, Victor, she is survived by her children, Laurie Madsen (Kent) of Montgomery, IL and Cheri Stancer (Robb) of Livonia, MI; her brother, George Ashcroft of Trinity, FL; five grandchildren, Kailea Leal (Isai), Brianna Stancer, Kameron Stancer, Kirsten Madsen and Trey Madsen; and two great-granddaughters Adelina and Raya Leal. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft; and her two sisters, Barbara Tollefson and Irene Gunderson.There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Frank James Hayes, Jr., 53, chief of police of Goodland, KS passed away at his home in Goodland, Kansas on August 30, 2023.&nbsp;He was born on March 27, 1970 to Frank Sr. and Hilda (Snody) Hayes in Lake Charles, Louisiana.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Frankie was united in marriage to Tamara Nichols on January 24, 2003 in Goodland, KS.&nbsp;To this union they brought four children, Kallie, Michael, Victoria, and Cameron.

Frankie’s family meant the world to him, both his work family and his wife, children, and grandchildren.&nbsp; They were his priority, and he was their Superman. He was extremely proud of his police department and the officers that made up his work family.&nbsp; He always expected more out of himself than he did of others, and strived to be a leader he could be proud of. &nbsp;

He lived his life with integrity and respect for God and his fellow man. Frankie was a deacon at the First Baptist Church. &nbsp;He loved cooking, grilling, and smoking meats and feeding people, especially food from his Louisiana roots.&nbsp; He loved riding his Harley; helping those in need; and wearing his crocs when he wasn’t on duty.&nbsp; He was a die-hard New Orleans Saints and LSU football fan all of his life. 

Frankie received his associate in applied science degree for Business Management and Leadership with all honors in the fall of 2021 from Barton Community College online.&nbsp; He then transferred to Fort Hays State University online in 2022 and was 10 classes away from earning his bachelor's of criminal justice degree.

Frankie had always wanted to be a police officer and in 2003 he was hired by the Goodland Police Department until he moved to Louisiana in 2007.&nbsp; Greg Kroskey persistently called him year after year to see if he was ready to come back, and in February 2017, Frankie finally said yes.&nbsp; Frankie was appointed as Goodland’s police chief on September 7, 2020, and was still serving the city of Goodland in this capacity.&nbsp; Frankie always told his wife that the people and community of Goodland felt more like home than anywhere else he had ever lived, which was why he wanted to come back to Goodland.

Frankie is survived by his wife Tamara Hayes of Goodland, KS, his four children Kallie (Larry) Hollie, Michael Hayes, Victoria (Aaron) Ratcliff, and Cameron Hayes, his brothers and sisters Rebecca (Kevin) Stockman, Tammi Worrell, James (Suzi) Hayes and George “Buddy” Hayes. He is also survived by his grandchildren Chandler, Kaigen, Gracen Hollie, Leonidas Hayes, and Torin Ratcliff.

Vivian D. McClung, 81 years young, longtime resident of Goodland, Kansas passed away at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas on September 6, 2023. She was born on August 29, 1942 on the family farm in Cheyenne County Kansas to Rudolf and Christina (Lippert) Schritter. 

Vivian attended rural county schools and completed her education at the Sherman Community High School class of 1960.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She married Larry McClung on September 4, 1960;&nbsp; they celebrated their 63rd&nbsp;wedding anniversary this past Monday. To this union three children were born, Gary, Denise and Sherry.&nbsp; 

She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker for many years and then joined her husband and son as the secretary of McClung’s Appliance until her retirement in 2009.

Vivian enjoyed weekly bowling leagues, traveling to bowling tournaments, visits to casinos – especially Cripple Creek, CO where she loved playing the dollar slots. She enjoyed watching and cheering on the Denver Broncos.&nbsp; 

Vivian really enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in all of their activities.&nbsp; She was a 4-H leader for the Warren Star Busy Bees.&nbsp; Vivian was an avid gardener, she learned the art of gardening, canning, butchering chickens and milking cows from her mother at an early age. She also enjoyed playing pitch and pinochle, fishing, boating and riding the motorcycle with Larry.&nbsp; Her favorite TV shows were Wheel of Fortune, NCIS and all cooking shows.

Vivian is survived by her husband Larry McClung of the home, her three children Gary (Laura) McClung, Denise (Patrick) Fitzgibbons, both of Goodland and Sherry McClung of La Crosse;&nbsp; her grandchildren Shandi Shaw, Zane (Rachel) Gilmer, Jason (Vanessa) McClung, Theresa (Nathan) Sears, Ana (Mark) Musial, Jonathan McClung, Tiffany Skinner, Jonah McClung, Leaona (Jacob) Anderson, Ashtin McClung and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister Gertrude Swayne of Goodland and brother Herbert Schritter of Colby.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kenneth Dean Yoke, 89, of Goodland, KS passed away in Lee’s Summit, Missouri on September 1, 2023.&nbsp;He was born on September 13, 1933 to Dewey and Gladys (Abbott) Yoke in Newton, Kansas.

Kenneth was united in marriage to Wilma Spillman on July 30, 1955 in El Paso, TX at the Dudley baseball field. To this union they had four children Nancy, Pam, Les, and Mike.

Ken loved baseball his entire life and was a pitcher with several Double A teams in the '50s. He had a brief stint with a Triple A team and pitched to several major league stars in spring training, including Yogi Berra. He loved telling stories about his baseball experiences. &nbsp;After baseball he became interested in golf and built several golf courses in the area, including Sugar Hills Golf Club in Goodland. He retired from driving truck for Yellow Freight and then began puttering with woodworking and made an elaborate replica of Goodland’s Handy House, along with many other items.

Kenneth is survived by his children Nancy Yoke of Lee’s Summit, MO, Pam (Arlen) Riesen of Hillsboro, KS, Les (Debbie) Yoke of Pagosa Springs, CO, and Mike Yoke of Atlanta, KS, siblings David Yoke of Phoenix, AZ, and Cheryl Brown of Goodland, KS, and a sister-in-law Janice Yoke of Phoenix, AZ.&nbsp; He is also survived by six grandchildren Rick (Jenni) Roeder; Kasi (William) Shephard; Thomas (Angie) Riesen; Travis (Cayla) Riesen; Sydney Yoke; Aubrey (Garth) Griffith; and seven great-grandchildren.

Donna Rene (Courtright) Hake passed away on Sept. 5, 2023 after a courageous battle against cancer.&nbsp; Donna was born in Hugo, CO on Nov. 13, 1959 to William Dale and Irene (Burian) Courtright. She was welcomed home by her sisters Cheryl, Debby, Becky and brother Bill. 

Donna had lots of help growing up, with help from her four siblings and she enjoyed playing with her cousins in Vona. &nbsp;&nbsp;She was taught a good work ethic from her parents and also her talent and love of gardening came from them. Around junior high time she started mowing yards and worked after school and summers at Stratton schools with her dad who was the custodian. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Donna attended all 12 years of school in Stratton, graduating in 1978.&nbsp; 

While working at Dischners Grocery she met her future husband, Jim, the summer after graduation.&nbsp; After a few years of courtship they were married in February 1981.&nbsp; In 1983 they welcomed their first daughter Dalene and two years later daughter Carrie was born.&nbsp; Their love lasted 42 years and endured all the hardships of life but also made many wonderful memories.

Before having kids, Donna was a partner with her mom and sister Debby in the Stratton Donut Shop. It was a well-liked and successful business, but Donna sold her share to devote her time to raising her family full time. &nbsp;Donna also owned and operated the Leisure Garden where she painted and sold ornamental concrete and other garden items. She was incredibly talented as an artist and many of those pieces are still around. She also painted both interior and exteriors of many houses in Stratton and the surrounding areas.

After both girls were in school, Donna began working as a cook at the Stratton Elementary School. She stayed employed there for 20 years and retired in 2021 before the COVID pandemic. Retirement gave her extra time to work on her lawn, landscaping, and gardens, something she truly enjoyed.&nbsp; She also liked hosting family barbecues and watching the Broncos (without her husband’s commentary) and was thrilled to be a grandma.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Irene Courtright, her father-in-law Howard Hake, her mother-in-law Edna Hake, her sister Cheryl Richards, her brother-in-law Steve Conrads, her great-niece Alaina Richards, her great-nephew Trevor Richards, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Left to carry on her legacy and memory are her husband Jim, daughter Dalene and husband Dusty Parsons, daughter Carrie and husband Richard Weimer, grandkids Brooklyn Parsons, Blake Parsons, and Ava Weimer. She also leaves her sister Debby Conrads, her sister Becky and husband Don Gurley, brother Bill Courtright and wife Susan, sisters-in-law Carolyn Woodman, Jan Britton, and brother-in-law David Hake and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was welcomed home by her sisters Cheryl, Debby, Becky and brother Bill. Donna had lots of help growing up, with help from her four siblings and she enjoyed playing with her cousins in Vona. &nbsp;&nbsp;She was taught a good work ethic from her parents and also her talent and love of gardening came from them. Around junior high time she started mowing yards and worked after school and summers at Stratton schools with her dad who was the custodian. &nbsp;&nbsp;Donna attended all 12 years of school in Stratton, graduating in 1978.&nbsp; While working at Dischners Grocery she met her future husband, Jim, the summer after graduation.&nbsp; After a few years of courtship they were married in February 1981.&nbsp; In 1983 they welcomed their first daughter Dalene and two years later daughter Carrie was born.&nbsp; Their love lasted 42 years and endured all the hardships of life but also made many wonderful memories.Before having kids, Donna was a partner with her mom and sister Debby in the Stratton Donut Shop. It was a well-liked and successful business, but Donna sold her share to devote her time to raising her family full time. &nbsp;Donna also owned and operated the Leisure Garden where she painted and sold ornamental concrete and other garden items. She was incredibly talented as an artist and many of those pieces are still around. She also painted both interior and exteriors of many houses in Stratton and the surrounding areas.After both girls were in school, Donna began working as a cook at the Stratton Elementary School. She stayed employed there for 20 years and retired in 2021 before the COVID pandemic. Retirement gave her extra time to work on her lawn, landscaping, and gardens, something she truly enjoyed.&nbsp; She also liked hosting family barbecues and watching the Broncos (without her husband’s commentary) and was thrilled to be a grandma.Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Irene Courtright, her father-in-law Howard Hake, her mother-in-law Edna Hake, her sister Cheryl Richards, her brother-in-law Steve Conrads, her great-niece Alaina Richards, her great-nephew Trevor Richards, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.Left to carry on her legacy and memory are her husband Jim, daughter Dalene and husband Dusty Parsons, daughter Carrie and husband Richard Weimer, grandkids Brooklyn Parsons, Blake Parsons, and Ava Weimer. Marjorie Jean (Niblock) Dechant, formerly of Hoxie

Marjorie “Marge” Jean (Niblock) Dechant, 88, formerly of Hoxie, Kansas passed away in DeSoto, Kansas at the home of her son, Joe Dechant. Marge was born to Henry and Rachel (Stithem) Niblock on June 15, 1935, at the family home north of Studley, Kansas. She grew up on the farm with her three siblings. 

Marge attended Bow Creek Elementary School and graduated from Sheridan County High School with the class of 1953. After graduation, she worked a short time in Hoxie and then moved to Hays to work. 

She met Duane Dechant at a wedding dance. They both liked to dance the polka. On May 9, 1964, Marge and Duane were married in the St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas.

Marge and Duane lived in Hays and Morland after they were married. From Morland, they moved to Hoxie where they lived most of their life until 2010 when they moved to live with their son in the Olathe, KS area. They were blessed with a family of three children, Lisa, Karen, and Joe. 

Marge enjoyed working at the Hungry Farmer, the Hoxie hospital as certified nursing assistant (CNA), the Hoxie Elks, and at the Mahanna Pharmacy for several years. She developed life-long friends at these jobs; she really enjoyed working with her co-workers as they always did practical jokes and really had fun. Marge also enjoyed babysitting for some very special kids that were always important to her and she loved. Marge and Duane loved to dance the polka and did so as often as possible. 

Marge supported her children, enjoyed her grandchildren and was very involved in their lives. Some of the best memories were Karen’s kids coming and going many times a day across the street for treats or to spend time with her. After moving to Olathe she volunteered at Meadowlane Elementary and was able to do that for each grandkid that went there. Marge loved sports, she loved watching her grandkids activities and following professional teams. She always had a football or baseball game on TV. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

Marge is survived by her husband, Duane of DeSoto, Kansas; children, Joe Dechant and wife Crystal of DeSoto, Kansas, and Karen Karnes of Hoxie, Kansas; brother, Don Niblock; grandchildren, Isaiah Washington, Holden Karnes, Isabella Karnes, Brett Dechant, Jaxon Dechant, Polina Dechant, and Julianna Dechant.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rachel Niblock; daughter, Lisa Ann Dechant; and sisters, Mary Harris, Alice Lewis and Elsie Wallsmith; brother, Henry Niblock Jr.; and brother-in-law, John Lewis; sister-in-law, Mary Niblock.

A funeral service is planned for Thursday, September 14, 2023, 10:30 a.m., at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Interment will take place following the service in the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Cemetery, Hoxie, Kansas. Visitation will be held September 13, 2023, at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5:30 p.m. -7:00 p.m.

Phyllis Gail Gifford, 94, passed away September 8, 2023, at Credo Senior Living, Basehor, Kansas. She was born on July 12, 1929, at Kansas City, Missouri, to Rodney and&nbsp; Zella (LaClare) Wilcox. On November 2, 1952, 

Phyllis married Lawrence Mische in Trousdale, Kansas. He passed away on July 28, 1958. She then married Merle E. Gifford on June 1, 1969, in Larned, Kansas. He passed away on July 12, 2012.

Mrs. Gifford was a Basehor, Kansas resident coming from Bushton and Larned. 

She graduated from Wesley University and spent her working years as a registered nurse. 

Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a long-time member of a bridge club with her best friends. Phyllis enjoyed crafts of all kinds: sewing, knitting, ceramics, wheat weaving and tatting. She also loved planting a garden, tending it and canning the rewards or enjoying her beautiful roses. Phyllis loved Precious Moments and was an avid collector of the figurines.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley (Drucilla) Mische of Richmond, Virgina, and Kirk (Annika) Mische of Basehor, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Lawrence Mische; Merle Gifford; son, Gary Gifford; two daughters, Kathy (James) Ray and Mary Nolan; grandson, David Ray; and great-great-granddaughter, Maribelle Sims.

Jule Winters was born May 30, 1932, in Webster to George and Rose (Folsom) Winters. He passed away Sept. 2, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City.

Jule attended school in Webster and graduated from Stockton High School in 1950. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Lala on Dec. 13, 1952, in Phillipsburg. They had two children: Linda Eileen and Steven Jule. Jule and Betty were married almost 65 years when Betty passed away in 2017.

Always a working man, Jule was young when he took his first job setting pins at the bowling alley. He continued working throughout school and took a job in the oil field after high school. His job required the family to move frequently, and they lived in Stockton, Lyons, Hays, Great Bend, Logan, Madison and Russell before settling in Hill City to open Winters Conoco at the corner of Sixth and Main.

They later moved to the corner of Fourth and Main to become Winters Fina and then Winters Texaco. Jule, Betty and Steve were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. When not pumping gas, changing oil, jumpstarting batteries, fixing tires, or any of the other services they provided, Jule could be found sitting in his chair watching the comings and goings of Main Street and visiting with their many customers.

On their Sundays off, Jule and Betty spent the day visiting family in Woodston, fishing, hunting or gathering with family at Webster Lake. To fill his time in his later years, Jule returned to work as the night cashier at Wings Spirits.

The construction of Webster Reservoir and the resulting movement of the town had a big impact on Jule and was perhaps the reason he was enthusiastic about innovation and progress. As such, he loved television. Before television was a fixture in every household, Jule and his good friend Keith Dillon would go downtown to watch boxing matches on the TVs in the store windows. It was therefore a big occasion when the family got their own television and Jule could watch boxing while sitting at home in his easy chair. He also enjoyed watching the news, the weather, and pretty much anything else that was on. Jule had an assortment of weather instruments so he could compare the weatherman’s predictions against his own collection of barometers, thermometers and rain gauges.

Jule was known for his patient and easy-going nature. A former co-worker once told Crystal, “If you can’t get along with Jule Winters, you can’t get along with anyone.” Jule also had an ornery streak and an observant sense of humor. In one famous instance, Jule couldn’t shake the skier he pulled behind the boat. Undeterred, Jule simply stopped the boat and watched his nephew sink in the middle of Webster Lake.

Jule was part of a close-knit family, of which he was a pillar. The Winters family is blessed with long lifespans, and Jule was fortunate to have close relationships with all his siblings that lasted up to nine decades. He was a constant fixture in BJ and Crystal’s lives and was delighted to gain two more granddaughters with the additions of Bailey and then Stevie. Jule served as a large part of his great-grandchildren’s lives and was the first of his siblings to be promoted to the rank of great-great-grandparent.

Jule was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents, George and Rose; stepfather Victor Brown; and siblings Viola Paulson, Billy Winters, Ivan Winters, and an infant sister.

He is survived by daughter Linda Winters (Jim Delaney) of Hill City; son Steven (Lana) Winters of Bogue; grandchildren BJ (Jean Ann) Hoeting, Webster, Crystal (Tim) Plante, Hill City, Bailey Loughrey, Norton, and Stevie Winters, Bogue; great-grandchildren Sabre (Alex) Riggins, Hill City, Braidyn Plante (Ray Simite), Lexington, Nebraska, Gavin Plante and Easton Plante, Hill City, Cappi and Cheyenne Hoeting, Webster, Bryten Loughrey, Bogue, and Acelynn and Brexton Loughrey, Norton; and great-great-grandchildren Zach Simite, Lexington, Neb., and Axen and Atlee Riggins, Hill City. Also surviving are sister Georgia Buttermore, Denver, Alva Winters, Hill City, and Lennie (Diane) Winters, Imperial, Neb., along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private memorial service will be at a later date with burial at Ash Rock Cemetery in rural Rooks County. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Webster State Park.

James Lloyd Bradford, 79, died Sept. 1, 2023, in Hill City. He was the only child born to Charles and Isabel (Krug) Bradford, Sept. 26, 1943, in Russell.

“Jim” as he was known to all, or James, as he was called by Sharon, grew up in the Russell area until sixth grade when the family moved to Great Bend. He graduated from high school there in 1962. Following graduation, he worked nights for the Great Bend Tribune running the address-o-graph and delivering paper bundles to surrounding towns.

Sharon had her eyes on this handsome fella long before they met. She was finally introduced to him by a friend who had previously dated Jim. One date started it all. As Sharon Long began her senior year, she was sporting his class ring and by Christmas, it was exchanged for an engagement ring. The couple was married on June 27, 1964.

The previous April, Jim had joined the National Guard and served for six years; however, was never called to active duty. After his training was completed, they finally began married life in September. The two newlyweds rented their “Love Shack” in Great Bend until 1967. After the couple moved to Hill City, Jim went to work for Baker Service Tools. The couple had their first daughter, Jaime in 1970 and their second daughter, Shari in 1973. Jim worked for 30 years at Baker Tools as a warehouseman, cleaning and repairing tools until the Hill City location was closed. Not wanting to relocate his family, he resigned and began working for Money Chevrolet, cleaning and detailing semis.

Open heart surgery ended that career in 2004. After a “second” retirement, he went to work for X-Pert Tools back to doing the work he truly loved once again.

In 2008, when Sharon retired from the courthouse, life of pure fun actually began. A motorcycle had always been in their garage off and on from the beginning. A 2003 Fatboy was converted to a three-wheeler, in 2008 covered in chrome, which was never enough. James and Sharon hit the road. It didn’t matter if it was a short hour ride or a long road trip, it was pure enjoyment. With friends, they traveled to Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, South Dakota, Montana, and a short jaunt into Canada. They never could decide which was their favorite.

Jim’s enemy was always with him. Retinitis Pigmentosa slowly robbed his eyesight and prevented driving his cherished pick-up and trike. These were both sold to people that he knew would take care of them. He was sad but knew they would always be in good hands.

But even stronger was Jim’s love for his family. His pride for his daughters, Jaime and Shari and his granddaughters Faith, Allyssa and Abby, was almost beyond reason! He would have given his life to save any of them, probably having an award somewhere for being a Super Grandpa.

James was an easy man to please. Give him good food, a nice car and his Harley and he was a happy man. Of course, his three women were his favorites, well possibly second to the Harley.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents. Leaving to mourn his passing are his wife Sharon, of the home; two daughters, Jaime (Phil) Weller of Smithville, Mo., and Shari (Scott) Roberts of Hill City; three granddaughters: Faith Weller of Smithville, Mo., Allyssa (Lincoln) Brungardt of St. Peter, and Abby (Slater) Oden of Bozeman, Mont.

 </figure>James Lloyd Bradford, 79, died Sept. 1, 2023, in Hill City. He was the only child born to Charles and Isabel (Krug) Bradford, Sept. 26, 1943, in Russell.“Jim” as he was known to all, or James, as he was called by Sharon, grew up in the Russell area until sixth grade when the family moved to Great Bend. He graduated from high school there in 1962. Following graduation, he worked nights for the Great Bend Tribune running the address-o-graph and delivering paper bundles to surrounding towns.Sharon had her eyes on this handsome fella long before they met. She was finally introduced to him by a friend who had previously dated Jim. One date started it all. As Sharon Long began her senior year, she was sporting his class ring and by Christmas, it was exchanged for an engagement ring. The couple was married on June 27, 1964.The previous April, Jim had joined the National Guard and served for six years; however, was never called to active duty. After his training was completed, they finally began married life in September. The two newlyweds rented their “Love Shack” in Great Bend until 1967. After the couple moved to Hill City, Jim went to work for Baker Service Tools. The couple had their first daughter, Jaime in 1970 and their second daughter, Shari in 1973. Jim worked for 30 years at Baker Tools as a warehouseman, cleaning and repairing tools until the Hill City location was closed. Not wanting to relocate his family, he resigned and began working for Money Chevrolet, cleaning and detailing semis.Open heart surgery ended that career in 2004. After a “second” retirement, he went to work for X-Pert Tools back to doing the work he truly loved once again.In 2008, when Sharon retired from the courthouse, life of pure fun actually began. A motorcycle had always been in their garage off and on from the beginning. A 2003 Fatboy was converted to a three-wheeler, in 2008 covered in chrome, which was never enough. James and Sharon hit the road. It didn’t matter if it was a short hour ride or a long road trip, it was pure enjoyment. With friends, they traveled to Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, South Dakota, Montana, and a short jaunt into Canada. They never could decide which was their favorite.Jim’s enemy was always with him. Retinitis Pigmentosa slowly robbed his eyesight and prevented driving his cherished pick-up and trike. These were both sold to people that he knew would take care of them. He was sad but knew they would always be in good hands.But even stronger was Jim’s love for his family. His pride for his daughters, Jaime and Shari and his granddaughters Faith, Allyssa and Abby, was almost beyond reason! He would have given his life to save any of them, probably having an award somewhere for being a Super Grandpa.James was an easy man to please. Give him good food, a nice car and his Harley and he was a happy man. Of course, his three women were his favorites, well possibly second to the Harley.Jim was preceded in death by his parents. Ronald Hugh Combs, 85, departed this life quietly at his home in Georgetown, Texas on August 29, 2023.

Ron was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on December 11, 1937. He was the son of Cleo and Tessie Combs. 

Ron’s childhood included frequent relocations, as his dad’s job took his family to many different oil fields. He often lived in company camps. His family eventually settled in Russell Kansas, where he attended all four years of high school. 

There, he met the love of his life, Mary Jane Boxberger. The two were married in 1956, just before their sophomore year at Fort Hays State University. All-in-all, he eventually ended up with a total of three college degrees, including two master's degrees in educational psychology and special education. 

His career took many turns through the years and ranged from working to create a training program for the original seven astronauts to becoming an advocate for changing how this country educated it’s handicapped citizens. In that role, he created one of the model programs for the mainstreaming special needs student’s education to within their local schools. He also worked with other psychologist as part of President Johnson’s advisory group to help craft the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Ron and Mary and two children, Michael Scott and Patrick Lantz, and two grandchildren, John Patrick and Diana Frances. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, his son Michael, and his two sister’s Argie and June.

A private family graveside will be held at a later date. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the graveside funeral service.

David Miles Kearney, 72, of Larned, formerly of Belpre, Kansas, died September 1, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned, Kansas. He was born May 9, 1951 at Larned, Kansas, son of John Thomas and Regina Mary (Gonnering) Kearney of Belpre, Kansas.

He attended St. Bernard’s School and Belpre-Trousdale High School, both of Belpre, Kansas. He graduated from Macksville High School in Macksville, Kansas, in 1969. He was a 1971 graduate of Hutchinson Community Junior College with an associate of arts degree and a 1973 graduate of Fort Hays Kansas State College with a bachelor of arts degree in English and journalism.

David was an author, newspaper columnist, and unofficial Belpre, Kansas, historian throughout his life. He served as editor of the Kiowa County Signal in Greensboro for three and a half years, beginning in 1973. He authored several historical articles for Kansas publications and spent many years researching the history of Belpre and eastern Edwards County. In 1978, his book, Belpre, Kansas: The Story of a Small Town, was published. David’s goal in writing about Belpre was to preserve the history of the community. He was especially interested in the early years of Belpre’s history.

David’s interest in sharing the history of Belpre continued through his life. He was the author of the text for St. Bernard’s 75th anniversary book in 1976, the historical text included in St. Bernard’s Recipes and Remembrances cookbook in 1999, and St. Bernard’s Centennial Celebration book in 2001.

David was also the author of “The Belpre Observer” column in the Edwards County Sentinel, with his first column appearing in the April 9, 1998, edition. His column, “Belpre News and Views,” was published in the Larned Tiller and Toiler for over twenty years. Both columns were published through the first half of 2023.

David was a lifetime member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He was a member of Belpre’s Keenagers group, served on the board of the Henry Laird Library, and served as secretary of the Belpre-Trousdale Alumni Association. He was an avid reader, collecting books related to the history of Kansas towns and Catholic Churches.

David was preceded in death by his parents; &nbsp;brothers, John Patrick Kearney and Thomas Michael Kearney; and sister, Mary Kathleen Sculley. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Louise (Goudy) Kearney, McPherson, Kansas; nieces Erin Kearney, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Kristen Nolan and husband, Spencer, of Spring Hill, Kansas; nephew Troy Sculley and wife, Angela, of Leavenworth, Kansas; several great-nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, September 15, 2023 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, Kansas. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 16, 2023, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belpre, Kansas. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. and funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow the service in the Belpre Cemetery.

David Miles Kearney

Albert Allen Whipkey, 77, passed away September 10, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, LaCrosse, Kansas. He was born on October 2, 1945, in Fairfax, Oklahoma. He was adopted a few days later by Albert A. and Beatrice S. Whipkey of Fairfax, Oklahoma and later Hoisington, Kansas. 

Allen graduated from Hoisington High School in 1963 and graduated with a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Central State in Oklahoma in 1967 and a master's of science in 1972.&nbsp;

Allen married Diedre Scott in June of 1966 in Oklahoma; they later divorced. He later married Connie Hoss in Great Bend, Kansas, in October of 1998. She survives.&nbsp;

Allen served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970. Allen then taught high school science classes, but mostly biology, chemistry and A&amp;P in different schools in Oklahoma, including Shawnee, Oklahoma and later at Great Bend High School for 18 years. Allen also taught outreach classes at Barton County Community College for a number of years. He was known as “Whip” to the students and loved the camaraderie he had with them. It was said that he made biology fun and easier to understand and the students always looked forward to hearing his hilarious childhood stories.&nbsp;

During his years in Oklahoma and later Kansas, he raised and showed Appaloosa horses. Next to his love of horses was his love of a brand new red Corvette convertible purchased in the year 2000. This car was once used to drive the grand marshal in a Hoisington Labor Day Parade, as well as driven to several proms.&nbsp;

Allen was the owner of Cheyenne Trailer Sales for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Steven Whipkey.&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Reverend Adam Wutka presiding. Interment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington, Kansas.
