Bonnie B. Elliott, born November 24, 1927 in Longford, Kansas, to Carrie and W.O. “Oscar” Botz,&nbsp; passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023 in Kingwood, Texas.&nbsp; Bonnie, the fourth of six children, was raised on the family farm near Longford.&nbsp;Times were tough, but love was plenty.  

Bonnie attended Longford public schools, graduating salutatorian of the class of 1945.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After high school, Bonnie attended The Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing in Concordia, KS, graduating as a registered nurse in 1948.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;For the next forty-four years, she worked as a nurse along with taking on the role as the first hospital administrator for the yet to be opened Republic County Hospital in 1960, a position she held until her retirement in 1990. 

Nursing for Bonnie was not just a job, but her passion. &nbsp;Even at the end of her life, she quizzed her caregivers about their training and nursing techniques. Over her career she received many professional accolades, but her favorite moments were when she could step away from her administrative duties and provide care to patients and their families.&nbsp; &nbsp;After her retirement she loved to gather with her former hospital staff to reminisce about their hospital days.&nbsp; Bonnie encouraged and assisted many of her nursing staff to further their education. &nbsp;Her impact on healthcare in Republic County is still felt today as she oversaw two major expansions to the hospital in her thirty-year career as its chief officer.

On April 17, 1949, Bonnie married LeeRoy Elliott, a union that lasted 68 years until Roy’s death, also on November 7, 2017.&nbsp; To this union three children were born: Keenan, Craig, and Lecia.&nbsp; 

Bonnie and LeeRoy made their first home on the Elliott family farm northwest of Republic, Kansas where they raised their family with strong Christian values, an appreciation for hard work, integrity, and education. &nbsp;In 1984, LeeRoy and Bonnie moved west of Belleville into their dream home that Roy lovingly designed and built for her. In 2021, Bonnie moved to Kingwood, Texas to be closer to her daughter.

Bonnie was known for her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens where she spent hours planting, weeding, harvesting, canning, and freezing the fruits of her labor. From 1994 – 2010, Bonnie and LeeRoy spent their winters in south Texas where they made wonderful memories.&nbsp; Bonnie learned to play Mahjong, bringing her love of the game back to her friends in Belleville, many who are still playing and teaching others the game today. Bonnie was an avid reader and hardly a week passed without a trip to her beloved Belleville Public Library. During the winter months she always had a sewing project going, creating wonderful handicrafts for her friends and family.&nbsp; 

Bonnie was a proud member of PEO Chapter JA, Republic United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women’s group in Republic, Kansas.

Bonnie was predeceased by her husband, LeeRoy, her beloved son-in-in law, Stuart Chaney, her parents, siblings, and their spouses: Frances (Don) Hoffman, Evelyn (Cliff) Asher, Dorothy (Calvin) Bergmeier, Wayne (Delores) Botz, and James (Shirley) Botz as well as numerous brothers and sisters in-law on the Elliott side of the family.

Bonnie is survived by her children Keenan (Linda) Elliott of Belleville, Kansas, Craig (Jeanette) Elliott of Courtland, Kansas, and Lecia Chaney of Kingwood, Texas.&nbsp; She is survived by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren: &nbsp;Matthew (Kelsey) Elliott, Jonathan, Spencer, and Leah of Kingwood, Texas; &nbsp;Jennifer Elliott and Sophia, Solveigh, and Acacia Lang of Lawrence, Kansas;&nbsp; Michael (Bonnie) Elliott, Jack and Roman of Ft. Worth, Texas; Nathan Elliott of Salina, Kansas; Nicole (Ryan) Bays, Elliott and Penelope of Lenexa, Kansas; &nbsp;Elizabeth Chaney of Denver, Colorado, and Elliott McLain “Mac” Chaney of San Francisco, California.&nbsp; She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Verlene Veteto of Courtland, Kansas, Eleanor Elliott of Anderson, California and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Monday, November 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at the Republic Community Church, burial will follow at Lake Cemetery, rural Republic.

Pat Leroy Hawkins, age 75, of Goodland passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Topside Manor.&nbsp;

Pat was born August 18, 1948 to George and Mabel (Hicks) Hawkins in Syracuse, Kansas. 

He grew up in Towner, Colorado and graduated from Plainview High School in 1966.&nbsp; 

He worked as a farmhand in Towner until 1969 when he enlisted in the United States Army. He returned to Towner area in 1971 and worked as a heavy equipment/truck driver. 

On July 25, 1981 he married Twila Ann Appelhans in Garden City. They lived in Oakley.&nbsp;

He is survived by his brother Wayne of Texas; and numerous cousins. Preceding Pat in death are his parents and wife Twila.&nbsp;

Logan, KS resident, Alvin Duane Leach passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at the Logan Manor in Logan, KS at the age of 86.

He was born January 5, 1937 in Culbertson, NE the son of Theodore Emery and Beela Gertrude (Benjamin) Leach. &nbsp;

Alvin kept busy. &nbsp;He worked for many packing houses in McCook, NE, Fort Morgan, CO, and Denver, CO.

In 1969, while in Denver, he joined the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He moved to Fort Collins, CO and owned a motel, gas station, and a trailer court. &nbsp;While there he became an Elder in the Church. &nbsp;He eventually sold the motel and purchased an equestrian center and did a little farming.

For health reasons he moved to Logan, KS to be near family.

He is survived by his four children: &nbsp;daughters Penny Dottavio of Denver, CO; Honey Kibbee of Phillipsburg, KS, and Pat Leach of Greeley, CO; a son Dennis Leach of Denver, CO; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ron Leach of Burlington, CO; and a sister, Trudy Brown of Limon, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Malcolm and Gordon; and a granddaughter Randi.

Alvin Duane Leach

Judith Ann Berry, 71, long-time resident of McCook, Nebraska, passed away in her home on November 5, 2023 in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; Judith Ann was born to Joseph and Martha (Otte) Vinton on August 23, 1952 in Rushville, Nebraska.&nbsp; Judy was the oldest of 13 children, five sisters and seven brothers who were raised on the family ranch near Eli, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Judy attended grade school in a one-room school house in Eli, Nebraska where she walked or rode a horse along with her siblings about three miles every day, one way.&nbsp; She attended St. Martin’s Academy in Rapid City, South Dakota with her sister Mary and they graduated in 1971.&nbsp; Judy then attended Alliance School of Practical Nursing and graduated March 27, 1973.&nbsp; 

After graduating from nursing school, Judy returned to Gordon and worked in the nursing home for a short time. Judy then worked in Madonna Rehabilitation in Lincoln, Nebraska and Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska before moving to Oberlin, Kansas.

Judy loved to tell stories about growing up in the sand hills of Nebraska on a ranch.&nbsp; She even loved to do demo derby and racing cars with some of her brothers. She learned to fly with a couple of her uncles and grandfather as early as 12 years of age.&nbsp; Judy eventually got her pilot’s license and held it until she had her daughter in 1979.&nbsp; She got the nickname of “Mintlady” because she picked up a hobby of making cream cheese mints after doing them for her daughter’s graduation in 1997.&nbsp; She had about every flavor or shape you could think of.&nbsp; Judy loved nursing, but she loved her family and friends even more.

Judy worked at the Decatur County Hospital and Nursing home in Oberlin, Kansas; where she met her future husband, Gary Kay Berry.&nbsp; They moved to McCook, Nebraska and were married on August 4, 1984.&nbsp; She started her job at Community Hospital in August 1984 and continued to work there until her retirement on October 18th, 2019.&nbsp; Judy worked in various departments while at Community Hospital, but her absolute favorite thing was working with babies and first-time parents.&nbsp; Many of her co-workers would say that she could make bad situations tolerable and made work fun.&nbsp; She gave the best bear hugs and had a great laugh.&nbsp; She was a dedicated and loving nurse.&nbsp; Judy received the Caring Kind award in 2010.&nbsp; Her nomination for that award read as follows:&nbsp; Judy Berry, LPN, has been in nursing care at Community Hospital since 1984.&nbsp; She is always willing to go the “extra mile” for each individual – patients, fellow employees, and visitors.&nbsp; Judy has helped many mommies and daddies with their newborns and embraced each baby as though they were her own.&nbsp; She has also been with many families at the end of life and has compassion for not only the patient, but each family member as well.&nbsp; Judy was with us when both my parents lost the battle to cancer.&nbsp; She was quick to share a tear, offer a hug, or just hold our hand.&nbsp; Judy has a smile and a cheery word for everyone.&nbsp; She is quick to offer her help for each employee who might need an extra hand.&nbsp; Judy is truly a “Caring Person”

Upon retiring, she stayed in McCook, Nebraska until May of 2020 when she decided to be closer to Sara and her grandchildren.&nbsp; She bought her dream car and found a nice house in Goodland, KS.&nbsp; She enjoyed her grandchildren almost every day and sat on her porch watching neighbors.&nbsp; As God would have it, a nurse, Stephanie, moved in next door with her fiancée and they became good friends.&nbsp; When her health declined, her neighbors came over regularly and brought their boxer dogs with them.&nbsp; Probably once a month or so they would have supper with her and let Judy give the dogs table food treats.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Martha; brother, Edward; infant sister, Martha Elizabeth; husband, Gary Berry; brother-in-law, Steve Dykes; sister-in-law, Linda Vinton; brother-in-law, Harold Berry; brother-in-law, Robert Keen, Jr; sister-in-law, Diane Slagle, nieces, Annie Blauvelt and Rachel Vinton.&nbsp; 

Judy is survived by her daughter, Sara Berry (Rob Johnson); three “special” daughters – Kandy, Brandy, and Teresea; grandson, Gavin Herren; granddaughters, Aspen Johnson, Jessica (Quentin) Mirabal, and Sarah Johnson; great-granddaughters Charity Mirabal and Baby Mirabal; great-grandson, Jaxon Mirabal; her sisters and brothers, Mary (Brad) Blauvelt; Joe (Marcia) Vinton; Fred (Linda) Vinton; Theresa Dykes; Mike Vinton; Kathy (Verlin) Dohse; Arty (Dee) Vinton; Helen (Brunza) LaBore; Chris (Darla) Vinton; Paul (Shelia) Vinton, her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: DeAlva Vinton, Gail Keen, Carroll (Jan) Berry, Bill Slagle, Deanna Sekyra, Terri Bredvick, and Debra (Earl) McNutt.&nbsp; There are a myriad of other special grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins that she loved so very much.&nbsp;

She learned to fly with a couple of her uncles and grandfather as early as 12 years of age.&nbsp; Judy eventually got her pilot’s license and held it until she had her daughter in 1979.&nbsp; She got the nickname of “Mintlady” because she picked up a hobby of making cream cheese mints after doing them for her daughter’s graduation in 1997.&nbsp; She had about every flavor or shape you could think of.&nbsp; Judy loved nursing, but she loved her family and friends even more.Judy worked at the Decatur County Hospital and Nursing home in Oberlin, Kansas; where she met her future husband, Gary Kay Berry.&nbsp; They moved to McCook, Nebraska and were married on August 4, 1984.&nbsp; She started her job at Community Hospital in August 1984 and continued to work there until her retirement on October 18th, 2019.&nbsp; Judy worked in various departments while at Community Hospital, but her absolute favorite thing was working with babies and first-time parents.&nbsp; Many of her co-workers would say that she could make bad situations tolerable and made work fun.&nbsp; She gave the best bear hugs and had a great laugh.&nbsp; She was a dedicated and loving nurse.&nbsp; Judy received the Caring Kind award in 2010.&nbsp; Her nomination for that award read as follows:&nbsp; Judy Berry, LPN, has been in nursing care at Community Hospital since 1984.&nbsp; She is always willing to go the “extra mile” for each individual – patients, fellow employees, and visitors.&nbsp; Judy has helped many mommies and daddies with their newborns and embraced each baby as though they were her own.&nbsp; She has also been with many families at the end of life and has compassion for not only the patient, but each family member as well.&nbsp; Judy was with us when both my parents lost the battle to cancer.&nbsp; She was quick to share a tear, offer a hug, or just hold our hand.&nbsp; Judy has a smile and a cheery word for everyone.&nbsp; She is quick to offer her help for each employee who might need an extra hand.&nbsp; Judy is truly a “Caring Person”Upon retiring, she stayed in McCook, Nebraska until May of 2020 when she decided to be closer to Sara and her grandchildren.&nbsp; She bought her dream car and found a nice house in Goodland, KS.&nbsp; She enjoyed her grandchildren almost every day and sat on her porch watching neighbors.&nbsp; As God would have it, a nurse, Stephanie, moved in next door with her fiancée and they became good friends.&nbsp; When her health declined, her neighbors came over regularly and brought their boxer dogs with them.&nbsp; Probably once a month or so they would have supper with her and let Judy give the dogs table food treats.Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Martha; brother, Edward; infant sister, Martha Elizabeth; husband, Gary Berry; brother-in-law, Steve Dykes; sister-in-law, Linda Vinton; brother-in-law, Harold Berry; brother-in-law, Robert Keen, Jr; sister-in-law, Diane Slagle, nieces, Annie Blauvelt and Rachel Vinton.&nbsp; Judy is survived by her daughter, Sara Berry (Rob Johnson); three “special” daughters – Kandy, Brandy, and Teresea; grandson, Gavin Herren; granddaughters, Aspen Johnson, Jessica (Quentin) Mirabal, and Sarah Johnson; great-granddaughters Charity Mirabal and Baby Mirabal; great-grandson, Jaxon Mirabal; her sisters and brothers, Mary (Brad) Blauvelt; Joe (Marcia) Vinton; Fred (Linda) Vinton; Theresa Dykes; Mike Vinton; Kathy (Verlin) Dohse; Arty (Dee) Vinton; Helen (Brunza) LaBore; Chris (Darla) Vinton; Paul (Shelia) Vinton, her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: DeAlva Vinton, Gail Keen, Carroll (Jan) Berry, Bill Slagle, Deanna Sekyra, Terri Bredvick, and Debra (Earl) McNutt.&nbsp; There are a myriad of other special grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins that she loved so very much.&nbsp;Celebration of life services in McCook, Nebraska will be held at a later date.Memorial contributions may be designated to the Community Hospital Health Foundation in McCook and may be sent to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Evelyn T. Youngers, 93, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2023 at home. &nbsp;She was born June 9, 1930 in Ost, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Helen (Schauf) Marx. &nbsp;

She was a supportive farmer’s wife and a loving mother of twelve children.

On May 18, 1949 she married George E. Youngers in Ost, Kansas. He passed away December 15, 2014.

Wayne Leroy Stewart, 92, went home to his Heavenly Father on November 3, 2023 from Ascension Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas. He had been a resident since mid-August when the progression of his Parkinson’s Disease necessitated his need to move from Homestead Assisted Living in Hays to long-term care. He had lived at Homestead with his wife for two years, where she still resides.

Wayne was born March 18, 1931 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Leroy James and Amy Book (Moyer) Stewart. 

He graduated from Longford High School in 1949, where he met and dated his future wife, Marguerite Steenbock. They married on September 2, 1951 and shared over seventy-two years together. Four children were born from their union: Brenda, Susan, Brian, and Sharon.

Wayne worked many jobs as a young man, but his career of close to forty years was with the Boogaarts Super Market chain. He started as an employee of the Clay Center store, and then became manager of stores in Minneapolis, Phillipsburg, and finally, Hays. He loved being a manager and developed friendships with many employees and customers over the years.

In his younger years he enjoyed boating and fishing, and completed many home improvement projects for his family and others. Family was always a priority to him, and he loved all the family dogs as well. He has been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1964 when the family moved to Hays, serving in many ways over the years.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, both older brothers, and their wives, George and Christina Stewart, and Orland and Dorothy Stewart.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite, daughter Brenda Hinton, Hays; daughter Sue Riley, Wichita; son Brian Stewart and wife Alicia, Leawood; and daughter Sharon Bunting and husband Rob, Wichita.

His nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren include: Blythe Brown, husband Mike, and children Emersyn and Ellis, Victoria; Breanne Nelson, daughter Shiloh, Merriam, and partner Mike Hutton, Overland Park; Jennifer Hartman and husband Jeremy Hutchinson, Tahlequah, OK; Courtney Waller, husband Andy, and children Cash and Ava, Wichita; Hannah Marchand, husband Curtis IV, and sons Curtis V and Vincent, Overland Park; Sydney Stewart, Leawood; Katelyn Miller, husband Jordan, and daughter Mia, KC, MO; Andrew Bunting, wife Jessica, and son Camden, KC, MO; and Alex Bunting, Wichita.

Wayne’s celebration of life service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date.

Richard Gary Hatfield, 69, passed away November 4, 2023 in Wichita.

He was born January 14, 1954, in Laxeu, France, the son of Richard Terry and Ruby Lorraine Fleming Hatfield. He grew up in Herington, Kansas. 

He lived and taught in White City, Bazine, Larned for thirteen years and Miltonvale for fifteen years.

He graduated from Emporia State University with his teaching degree and received his master’s degree from Friends University, Wichita. 

He was a church board member at the Miltonvale Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, Kansas National Education Association, Larned County Club and Miltonvale Golf Course. &nbsp;

Rick enjoyed anything sports, coaching, playing golf, watching westerns, and loved spending time with his grandkids.

On December 21, 1974, he married Darylene Sue France in Hope, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Darylene Sue Hatfield, Miltonvale; two daughters, Carrie (Tyler) Olson, Liberty, Missouri and Christina (Todd) Kieffer, Kansas City, Missouri, son, Casey (Kaitlyn) Hatfield, Larned; six grandchildren, Grady and Gavin Olson, Wyatt and Weston Kieffer, Colby and Collins Hatfield; brother-in-law, Rodney (Betty) France, Edmond, Oklahoma; three nieces and nephews, Ash (Dawna) Noble, Brooke (Blake) Watkins, and Jacob (Kasei) France, and four great-nieces, Natalie, Hayzlie, Fallan and Nora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Hatfield and his father and mother-in-law Lloyd and Miriam France.

Linda Jean Mowery-Denning, 74, of Salina, KS, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

Linda was born April 8, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. She was raised by her parents, Ralph S. Mowery and Veora Mowery in Bluffton, Indiana. She married Peter Alan Denning of Salina on September 4, 1982.

Linda graduated from Ball State University and eventually made her way to Salina in the 1970s where she began her journalism career with the Salina Journal. She was with the Salina Journal for 26 years before she left to begin the Ellsworth County Independent, now the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. She semi-retired in 2022, but she continued to write and report for the newspaper as well as her start-up magazine, The Magazine, a publication focused on Saline County and Northcentral Kansas.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her loving parents and in-laws, Art and Winnie Denning; and her brother-in-law, Jim Carrigan. She is survived by her two children, Matthew Denning of Salina and Allyn ‘Allie’ Denning of Lawrence. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in law, Diane Carrigan of Salina, Russ and Renee Denning of Overland Park, David and Ginger Denning of Manhattan, and her many nieces and nephews.

Linda Denning

Nicolette Lynn Unruh-Uhl, 36, passed away on November 3, 2023, near Manhattan, Kansas. She was born on October 25, 1987, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Dale and Bernadette “Berny” (Pachta) Unruh. 

On October 15, 2022, she married Nathan “Nate” Uhl at the Unruh Family Farm. They had been working on remodeling a big, beautiful home near Manhattan, along with the son she gained, Tristen.

Keith Walter Parkerson, age 84, died on November 4, 2023, at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on February 10, 1939, in Horton, Kansas, the son of Charles and Alice (Davis) Parkerson.

Keith owned and operated the Parkerson Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile dealership in Ness City, Kansas for fourteen &nbsp;years. &nbsp;When he opened the dealership at the age of 28, he was the youngest dealer in the state of Kansas. &nbsp;Keith was also a farmer, rancher and enjoyed selling real estate. &nbsp;

He was well known for his sense of humor, dedication to Kansas State University, and Dodgers baseball. He enjoyed many years of bowling, attending sporting events, and playing cards but his greatest love was for his family. &nbsp;

Keith had many dear friends but there were two that had the strongest influence on his path in life, Artie Strecker and Basil Marhofer. &nbsp;They both helped him achieve his dreams and aspirations.

On August 14, 1960, he married Jo McCreight in Ness City. &nbsp;Together they operated the car dealership, farm, ran cattle, and raised three children.

Keith is survived by his wife, Jo; two daughters, Becky Seib and her husband, Larry, of Ness City and Kim Parkerson Shoemaker and her husband, Donald, of Lake Bluff, Illinois; one son, Ron Parkerson and his wife, Mimi, of Las Vegas, Nevada; seven grandchildren, Kristin (Caleb) Sekavec, Kayla (Craig) Kennedy, Ryan (Allison) Seib, Brett (Kylie) Seib, Charles Parkerson, Austin Parkerson, and Payton Parkerson; 11 great-grandchildren, Riley, Ellie, Brynlie and Jace Sekavec, Tehgan, Parker, and Brogan Kennedy, Ashlyn and Raelyn Seib, Lakin and Avery Seib; and a sister Maxine Bronson of Denver, Colorado. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles, Jr. and Harvey Parkerson and four sisters, Lois Reid, Arlone Husted, Flora Parkerson, and Effie Sutton.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Ness City followed by burial in the Ness City Cemetery. &nbsp;Viewing will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Keith Walter Parkerson

Warren B. Sherwin, 89, died at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City, Kansas on November 4, 2023. He was born on October 9, 1934, on the farm, southwest of Beeler, the youngest son of Mark and Alice (Prose) Sherwin. 

His older siblings were Douglas, Dennis and Reva, who all preceded him in death. 

His parents, Mark and Alice Sherwin, lived west of Buda School, a one-room schoolhouse, where he attended until going to Beeler High School. 

He met Alberta Anderson of Utica, at a dance in Dighton. They started corresponding after Warren was enlisted in the United States Army in 1954. 

He completed his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, and was trained as a helicopter mechanic at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His home base was Fort Hood, Texas where he loved working on helicopters. One of his most memorable experiences while in the military was being part of 800 soldiers participating in an army exercise to witness an atomic explosion, at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada in 1955. During that exercise he received $55/month extra in hazardous duty pay. He also flew support for tanks, transported officers and helped injured soldiers get medical care. After he was discharged in 1956 with a rank of E-3, he went to Wichita to work for Boeing, before moving back to the farm.&nbsp;

On December 23, 1957, Warren married Alberta Anderson at the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Utica. They had five children: &nbsp;Rhonda, Brenda, Shelly, Karen and Scott. 

Warren was dedicated to hard work, raising crops, beef cattle and putting in long hours in all kinds of weather to provide for his wife and children. The farm had a large orchard and garden. 

He and Alberta enjoyed going to “cousin” card parties and square dances.&nbsp;Alberta passed away on June 3, 1996, after 38 years of marriage. 

Later Warren met Dorothy Schwartzkopf Weeks of Brownell. They married on January 2, 1998. They lived and worked on the farm and were active in the Sunflower Polka Club. &nbsp;Dorothy passed away on October 27, 2000.&nbsp;

Warren met and later married Norma Dvorak Binns of Scott City on September 22, 2001, his wife for the last 22 years. They lived first on the farm for a few years and then moved to Scott City. They enjoyed traveling with their RV to a camp near Salinas, Colorado and to Fredericksburg, TX, where they had many retired friends.

The Sherwin children have many fond memories of their dad, including fishing on Sunday afternoons, working together in the fields and on the farm. Warren had a calm, steady, compassionate character. He was very mechanical and always had something to fix. Having four daughters and a son had its challenges, but he patiently taught them to drive farm machinery.

Besides his family, one of Warren’s legacies was the Indian Hill land northwest of Beeler in 1988. This property was reported to have been a lookout for Native Americans to see any enemy coming into the area. Five years later in 2003, he decided to have a life-sized figure of an Indian sitting on a horse at the top of Indian Hill. He asked local metal smith Brad Dinges to sculpt the figure, who recruited his daughter to be the model. This work soon became a local attraction and is currently listed under the Wonders of Ness County. Warren really enjoyed seeing newspaper articles and comments from drivers who saw the artwork.&nbsp;

Warren was a member of Buda Sunday School and assisted when needed, was baptized at the Beeler UMC where he became a member and later attended the Scott City UMC. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Beeler Cooperative. In 2019, he was a recipient of a Kansas Honor flight, because of his service during the Korean War. He enjoyed a quick trip to Washington D.C., visiting historic sites.

Warren was proceeded in death by his first two wives, both parents, and his three siblings. 

Survivors include Norma Binns Sherwin of Scott City, KS; Rhonda (Steve) Ashworth of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Brenda Sherwin of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Shelly Sherwin of Douglas, Arizona; Karen Sherwin of Garden City; and Scott Sherwin who lives and manages the family farm near Beeler. Warren also has three grandsons: John Ashworth, Richard (Alena) Wheeler and Nathan Wheeler; and two granddaughters, Sarah (James) Heatley and Marie Ashworth. He recently welcomed his first great-grandchild, Luna Wheeler. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joyce Sherwin of Wichita, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Funeral service will be on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 10:30 a.m., at the Ness City Methodist Church, Ness City, Kansas. Burial will be in the Buda Cemetery, Beeler, Kansas. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Warren Bert Sherwin

Fulgence Jude Schroeder, 90, died on All Saints Day, November 1, 2023. He was born at home on the farm in Rawlins County on November 5, 1933. He was the 9th of 11 children born to Margaret (Arendt) and Charles Schroeder.

FJ grew up as a farmer and rancher milking cows, breaking horses, herding cattle, farming dry land wheat, oats, and milo. 

Fulgence attended grade school at Shawnee, a rural one-room schoolhouse as a child and later attended Atwood and Colby high schools. His love of wrestling gained him a state title his junior year.

Besides being a devoted husband and father, FJ served in the Navy, was a Knight of Columbus, taught religious education, financed overseas education for the poor, lead the rosary before mass for years, was a member of the John Birch Society, and was a friend to many in need.

FJ’s convictions in his faith and country ran deep. His many ‘letters to the editor’, congressmen, and even presidents attest to that. People of all walks of life were drawn to him for his ease of conversation. He took genuine interest in the people around him and had an easy laugh and smile that will be greatly missed. FJ loved to tell stories, true and otherwise. The wild boar and little green men stories held the attention of many ears. His stories of the hard years and lessons learned captured many hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John, Anthony Leon, Charles Martel, Nicholas Patrick, Rose, Delores, Barbara, and Mary Joan; son: Carl Frederick; and a few nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years of marriage Emma Rita (Pflum); children, Cindy and Larry Hutfles, of Park City, KS, Tonya and Andrew Wong, of North Carolina, Bonny and Marc Schlomer, of Colorado, Luke and Laura Schroeder, of Colby, KS, and Rosalie and Mark Greene, of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Luke, Eli, Liam, Faith, Eva, Arianna, and Cecilia Hutfles; Helen, Henri, Heather, Emma and Jude Wong; Natalie and Titus Schlomer; Isaac, Ella, Fiona, Levi, Vivian, Ruby, Jack and Will Schroeder; Philomena, John, and Charles Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

Fulgence’s burial was blessed by Fr. Lager and a funeral mass was said in St Patrick’s Cemetery, rural Rawlins County, on All Soul’s Day, November 2, 2023. Thank you to the many local family members and friends who were able to attend and pray for the repose of his soul.

Fulgence Jude 'F.J.' Schroeder

Valerian “Larry” Ochs, 80, passed away Monday, October 30, 2023, at the Logan County Senior Living in Oakley, KS. Larry was born in Quinter, KS on January 1, 1943, to Clem and Emma Helen (Gallagher) Ochs. 

He grew up on a farm south of Hoxie, KS and attended Hoxie Schools. Larry graduated from Sheridan County High School with the class of 1960.

He entered the Armed Forces in 1961 and was stationed at Fort Carson for six months then served in Germany for 18 months. Larry served his country for two years before returning to the family farm. In 2001, Larry returned to Germany when he and his wife took a trip there.

Larry married Virginia Ziegler on May 22, 1965, at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield, KS. 

They lived on the farm and continued to farm with his dad, and later with his brother, raising cattle and crops. Larry and Virginia eventually moved to Grainfield, KS. Once he quit farming, he worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for a number of years. Larry and Virginia sold their home in Grainfield in 2021 and moved to Logan County Senior Living in Oakley.

The loves of Larry’s life were his wife Virginia, daughter Melissa, grandsons and great-grandkids. He also enjoyed spending time with his aunts and uncles, numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.

Larry is survived by his wife Virginia, of Oakley, KS; two grandsons, Dexter Herl (Tiffany Thomas) and Derek Herl, all of Grainfield; great-grandchildren, Deagon, Deighton and Kaelynn Herl, Kaitlyn Herskowitz Brooklyn Herl, Brooklyn Thomas, Leighton Bliss and Robin Bliss; sisters, Carol Geerdes and Deanna Kennedy, both of Hoxie, and brother Dan Ochs, who resides on the family farm, Grainfield, KS.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Herl, who died July 12, 1991, and his parents Clem and Emma Helen Ochs.

Larry was born in Quinter, KS on January 1, 1943, to Clem and Emma Helen (Gallagher) Ochs. He grew up on a farm south of Hoxie, KS and attended Hoxie Schools. Larry graduated from Sheridan County High School with the class of 1960.He entered the Armed Forces in 1961 and was stationed at Fort Carson for six months then served in Germany for 18 months. Larry served his country for two years before returning to the family farm. In 2001, Larry returned to Germany when he and his wife took a trip there.Larry married Virginia Ziegler on May 22, 1965, at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield, KS. Valerian Ochs

Our mother, Shirley Brethower, of Colby, Kansas, and formerly of Bird City, Kansas died October 31, 2023;&nbsp; she was 90. She was born December 11, 1932, in Bird City, Kansas to Roy and Leone Kite. 

She graduated from Bird City High School in 1951, where she met Leon Brethower. 

On September 2, 1951, she married Leon Brethower. They lived on a farm near Bird City and had three children, Janice, Marlin and Phil, all who went to school in Bird City/McDonald school system. 

She and Leon traveled to AZ as winter visitors for a few seasons before they sold the farmstead and moved to Colby, KS. 

Shirley lost Leon five years ago, after having been married for 67 years.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, (Beverley Kite). 

Shirley is survived by her children, Janice (Frank), Marlin, Phil (Michele), and grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan, and Cristin.

Shirley was a loving, caring mom who grew to love the farm lifestyle. She participated in community social clubs and church committees. Her hobbies included genealogy, reading, cooking, and sewing projects, and even until just a short time ago, loved technology and could navigate her computer really well.

Shirley enjoyed a long life with family and friends, and she will truly be missed.

Shirley L. Brethower

Delores (Jacobs) Ice, of Stockton, KS, passed away on November 5, 2023, at the Wilson Care and Rehab in Wilson, KS, at the age of 84. She was born on October 7, 1939, to Joseph and Anna (Wasinger) Jacobs in La Crosse, KS.

She spent part of her life in La Crosse, Victoria, and on a farm south of Plainville before moving into Plainville. 

While working in Plainville, she met and married Mike Hassett from Stockton. To this union on February 1, 1958, one daughter was born before moving to California where another daughter was born. They later divorced. In 1973, she married David Ice and moved to Stockton in 1978. 

She spent thirty-some years working at the Stockton Pharmacy before retiring in 2009.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Jim and Tom; five sisters, Gerry, Mary Ann, Caroline, Betty and Jeanie; and many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Randy) Riffel of Stockton, KS and Vicki (Mark) Burgett of Arbuckle, CA; two grandsons, Daniel and Donnie Riffel; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Fetterolf of Hays, KS and Shirley Terry of Oklahoma City; three brothers, Joe Jacobs of Dodge City, KS, and Bert and John Jacobs of Hays; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. Burial will follow in the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday 10&nbsp; a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Delores Ice

Marion Kenneth Bahr, 94, passed away November 5, 2023, at Catholic Care Center, Bel Aire, Kan. He was born September 4, 1929, in Olmitz, to William F. and Anna M. (Hickey) Bahr. 

He married Marian Helen “Ann” Hipp on May 18, 1953, in Odin. She died July 16, 2014.&nbsp;

A lifetime Claflin resident, Marion worked for the Claflin Mill and later Miller’s of Claflin in the appliance and flooring installation departments. 

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1500 and the V.F.W. Post 8668 in Claflin. Marion was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed fishing but especially loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include four sons, Bill Bahr and wife Vicki of Rogers, Ark., Joe Bahr and wife Carolyn of Denver, Colo.; Tim Bahr and wife Tammi of Tallahassee, Fla., and Paul Bahr and wife Jeni of Ellsworth; two daughters, Rosemary Bachman and husband Tom of Lakin and Joan Klug and husband Bill of Odin; a brother, Robert Bahr of Houston, Texas; a sister, Rose Ann Wondra of Hoisington; 17 grandchildren, Heather Clark, Molly Shelden, Jenni Klienow, Amy Metro, Billy Klug, Jami Merlau, Kim Fisher, Kayla Johnson, Kevin Klug, Jeremy Bahr, Kenny Bahr, Ali Darhumb, Brit Harris, Michael Bahr, Mickey Bahr, Josh Bahr and Whitney Lee; 49 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Bahr; five brothers, Cecil Bahr, Donald L. Bahr, Charles Bahr, Frederick Bahr and Francis Bahr; and a sister, Catherine Oborny.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Vigil service and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Church, with Father Terrance Klein presiding. Interment will be in the Claflin Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.&nbsp;
