After nearly six decades of service to local youth, the Hays Optimist Club is disbanding — but their commitment to the community will live on through a newly established fund at the Heartland Community Foundation.

The Hays Optimist Friends of Youth Fund, a field-of-interest endowed fund, will carry forward the club’s mission to support the well-being, growth, and development of all youth in Ellis County.

“As hard as it is to close this chapter, we are incredibly proud of what this club has accomplished,” said Nathan Legleiter, club treasurer. “This fund is our way of saying thank you to the community that supported us all these years — and making sure our impact continues, long after the tree lot closes for the last time.”

The fund will make annual designated grants to three longtime Optimist-supported organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County, the Hays Arts Council, and Ellis County 4-H. 

Remaining funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process each year for projects that benefit youth or are led by kids and teens. The grant committee will be led by the Ellis County Youth Action Council, with guidance from Heartland staff.

 Local organizations will be able to apply for a grant from the fund in 2026. The amount available to grant will grow over time as the balance of the fund grows with continued donations and investment.

Throughout its long history, the Hays Optimist Club raised thousands of dollars through its annual Christmas tree lot and other fundraisers, supporting hundreds of youth-focused initiatives — from sponsoring the Ellis County Creative Writing Awards each year to helping fund the Optimist playground at Seven Hills Park, and contributing $10,000 to the ARC Park addition.

“This fund is a beautiful example of turning the end of one era into the beginning of something lasting,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director of Heartland Community Foundation. “It captures&nbsp;the essence of the Optimist mission — believing in youth, investing in them, and creating opportunities for them to grow.”

The endowed fund will be held and managed by the Heartland Community Foundation, ensuring that gifts made today — or as part of future estate plans — will continue to support Ellis County youth for generations to come.

Hays Optimist Club disbands after 60 years, creates endowed fund to continue mission

The Riley County Police Department Life Saving Award was presented to Officer Brandon Gadia for his exceptional performance and life-saving actions on Jan. 16. 

Officer Gadia responded to a welfare check concerning an individual who had not returned home and was not answering telephone calls. He collected a variety of information and issued a local alert for a welfare contact. When the reporting party later provided additional concerning details, to include missing medication and luggage, Officer Gadia pursued further leads and contacted the individual’s employer and ex-spouse. 

Through his diligent follow-up, Officer Gadia learned the individual had recently voiced intent to end their life. Officer Gadia coordinated with the agency resources that lead to a potential location near Hays. 

Working with RCPD dispatch, he used this information to identify a motel where the individual was confirmed as a guest. Officer Gadia then coordinated with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, who located the individual in medical distress. Thanks to Officer Gadia’s persistence, coordination, and investigative skills, the individual received life-saving medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officer recognized: Life-saving actions saved victim in Ellis County

A Hays native is coming home with his own Western feature film, "Was Once a Hero," at the same theatre where he grew up watching classic movies.

The film will screen at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets cost $13.99 and are available <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/o/the-fox-theatre-32076173407">online</a> in advance and at the door on both days.

Paige Smith took on multiple roles in the film, as co-writer, co-producer, costume designer and assistant director, after Dan Searles, whom he met at a film festival, approached him with a short script.

"I wrote the first draft based on his outline and then the two of us sort of molded it to our preference," Smith said.

The story centers on a veteran battling PTSD and dementia who sets out on a final journey and forms an unexpected bond along the way. It was primarily shot in Maryland with a small crew and a budget of less than $200,000.

The film stars Darby Hinton as Malcom Hunter and includes performances by Rebecca Holden, Robert Carradine and John Carter Cash. Smith also appears in the film as an actor.

"We really want to push the idea that family comes from anywhere. You can be yourself and still be loved by others who maybe come from somewhere different. ... We come together through diversity and through the tragedies in our lives," he said.

Smith will attend the screening to introduce the film and be available to answer questions.

Smith graduated from Hays High School in 1994 and later attended Kansas State University, where he initially studied biology before transitioning to theater, drawing inspiration from his family.

"As a kid, I watched my dad work on books and bounce ideas off people around him. It's very inspiring to watch somebody go for it," Smith said. "My brother was an actor as well. I watched him go for it and give it a shot."

Smith moved to Chicago after college, where he worked in local theater and began gaining television experience. He later moved to Los Angeles to continue building his career in acting and writing.

Smith has created several short films, including one that won Best Action/Adventure at Comic-Con in San Diego. He has also acted in and been involved in television series such as "Chicago Fire," "Chicago Med," "Shameless," "Goliath" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

He said most of those roles were “day jobs” and that breaking into the industry was difficult. This led him to create his own projects, which are now set to screen at the same theater he visited as a kid.

"Being able to go full circle and see a movie that I made in the theatre where I grew up watching movies is incredible and quite possibly once in a lifetime for me. It means the world to me," Smith said.

Filming took just a few weeks, but the whole process, from development through post-production and editing, took three years to complete.

NWester: Hays native to screen western film 'Was Once a Hero' at Fox Theatre

Westlake Ace Hardware in Hays, in partnership with its customers, donated 25 fans to the Salvation Army's annual fan drive on Thursday.

The fans are available through the Salvation Army by calling&nbsp;785-621-2794.

There are no income requirements to receive a fan. The Salvation Army requests that you limit yourself to one fan per household, and households that received a fan last year not request another fan this year.

Laura Allen of the Salvation Army said her agency and other nonprofits in the community receive requests throughout the summer for fans.

Anyone who would still like to donate a fan can reach out to the Salvation Army or other community agencies.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly and&nbsp;Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced $5.3&nbsp;million&nbsp;in awards for&nbsp;11&nbsp;vital&nbsp;transportation construction projects&nbsp;across Kansas&nbsp;through the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation’s&nbsp;(KDOT)&nbsp;Cost Share Program for&nbsp;Spring 2025.&nbsp;

This state&nbsp;investment will&nbsp;leverage&nbsp;nearly $3&nbsp;million&nbsp;in community matching&nbsp;funds, totaling more than&nbsp;$8&nbsp;million&nbsp;for&nbsp;infrastructure improvements that will enhance safety, support local economies, and improve connectivity.

"These Cost Share-funded projects are a prime example of smart government investments," Kelly said. "Through infrastructure and transportation improvements, we are making&nbsp;Kansas an even better place to live,&nbsp;to&nbsp;work, and&nbsp;to&nbsp;raise a family."

The KDOT Cost Share Program plays a critical role in&nbsp;helping&nbsp;both rural and urban areas advance transportation projects. Its focus areas include improving safety, supporting job retention and growth, alleviating congestion, and enhancing access and mobility for Kansans. The program is a cornerstone of the Kelly administration’s 10-year, bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since its&nbsp;inception&nbsp;in Fall 2019, the Cost Share Program has awarded state funding exceeding&nbsp;$157 million&nbsp;to Kansas communities. Ness City, Sherman County receive project awards from KDOT

Recent studies continue to confirm what physiologists and geriatricians have been saying for years: your handshake could be a window into your well-being.

Grip strength is measured using a dynamometer, a simple device that calculates the force exerted by your hand. While traditionally associated with athletes or manual laborers, researchers now recognize its broader implications. A 2024 review in The Lancet Healthy Longevity reaffirmed that lower grip strength is correlated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and even premature death.

Why does this matter? Because strength tends to decline with age, and grip strength often drops first. But if your hands are strong, you can do more, lift more and stay independent!

Unlike more complex diagnostics, grip strength is easy to test anywhere. For older adults, weak grip strength has been linked to decreased mobility, greater risk of falls, and longer hospital stays.

But this isn’t just about the elderly. In younger populations, poor grip strength can point to sedentary lifestyles, poor nutrition, or early signs of chronic conditions. One 2023 study from McMaster University found that teenagers with below average grip strength were more likely to develop metabolic disorders in early adulthood.

We can also look at grip strength in children. Children with lower grip strength are more likely to have higher body fat percentages, lower levels of physical activity, and an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular problems later in life. In 2023, a large-scale study published in Pediatrics examined over 4,000 children age 6 to 17 and found a strong correlation between grip strength and markers of cardiometabolic health such as blood pressure and insulin sensitivity.

Several studies have documented a decline in grip strength among children over the past few decades, likely due to more sedentary lifestyles and increased screen time. One British study comparing grip strength in 10-year-olds in 1998 and 2014 found a 20% decline over that period. Poor grip strength in children can also affect fine motor skills like writing, using scissors, tying shoelaces—skills critical to academic success and independence.

The good news? Grip strength is highly trainable. Simple resistance exercises such as squeezing a stress ball, carrying groceries without assistance, or doing deadlifts and pull-ups can all help improve hand strength. What does this look like in children? Activities like climbing, monkey bars, tug of war, and even modeling clay can boost hand strength.

Building strength is valuable at every age, and even basic routines lay the foundation for lifelong health. Grip strength may not make headlines often, but paying attention to it now could be the key to preventing larger health challenges later.

But if your hands are strong, you can do more, lift more and stay independent!Unlike more complex diagnostics, grip strength is easy to test anywhere. For older adults, weak grip strength has been linked to decreased mobility, greater risk of falls, and longer hospital stays.But this isn’t just about the elderly. In younger populations, poor grip strength can point to sedentary lifestyles, poor nutrition, or early signs of chronic conditions. One 2023 study from McMaster University found that teenagers with below average grip strength were more likely to develop metabolic disorders in early adulthood.We can also look at grip strength in children. Children with lower grip strength are more likely to have higher body fat percentages, lower levels of physical activity, and an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular problems later in life. In 2023, a large-scale study published in Pediatrics examined over 4,000 children age 6 to 17 and found a strong correlation between grip strength and markers of cardiometabolic health such as blood pressure and insulin sensitivity.Several studies have documented a decline in grip strength among children over the past few decades, likely due to more sedentary lifestyles and increased screen time. One British study comparing grip strength in 10-year-olds in 1998 and 2014 found a 20% decline over that period. Poor grip strength in children can also affect fine motor skills like writing, using scissors, tying shoelaces—skills critical to academic success and independence.The good news? Grip strength is highly trainable. Simple resistance exercises such as squeezing a stress ball, carrying groceries without assistance, or doing deadlifts and pull-ups can all help improve hand strength. What does this look like in children? Activities like climbing, monkey bars, tug of war, and even modeling clay can boost hand strength.Building strength is valuable at every age, and even basic routines lay the foundation for lifelong health. PLAINVILLE — Corbyn Marquess will be hosting the first annual Fore the Kids Classic, Saturday, July 26. The tournament will be a 4-person scramble held at Rooks County Golf Course, Plainville. All tournament proceeds will be donated to Children's Mercy Hospital. 

Because of generous business and individual donations the tournament will have a guaranteed payout for first&nbsp;place in all flights of $600.

 Corbyn is very passionate&nbsp;about this project as she was diagnosed&nbsp;with thyroid cancer when she was 16 years old. Children's Mercy gave her excellent care and she would like to give back to an important cause.

Free health and cancer screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 26 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. Seventh Street in Hays.

The free screenings are hosted by the Kansas Masons, Hays Masonic Lodge #195, the Masonic Cancer Alliance (MCA), and The University of Kansas Cancer Center. 

This community outreach event is free and open to the public. Insurance is not required. All ages are welcome. No appointments are necessary.

Lodge members and staff from the MCA, the outreach network of KU Cancer Center, are teaming up with health professionals from the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) to provide the following:

· prostate cancer screenings · skin cancer screenings · colorectal cancer take-home screening kits · tobacco cessation information

Area Masons work with staff from the MCA and the Kansas Masonic Foundation to coordinate many of the free screening events that often draw several hundred attendees of all ages. According to Brooke Groneman, MCA outreach director, more than 20,000 Kansas residents have attended the screenings since 2003.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer every day, and nearly 250 of those are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control reports that cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in Kansas, and the region has higher than average rates of skin cancer compared to other parts of the country. 

When it comes to the possibility of cancer, it is always better to catch a potential problem in the earliest stage possible. Anyone identified with a possible health concern at one of the free screenings is advised by the screening team to follow up with his/her local physician or provided with information on how to find a healthcare provider.

Free health, cancer screenings in Hays on July 26

Hays resident Toni Whitmer is organizing a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-marcos-on-his-heart-surgery-journey">GoFundMe fundraiser</a> on behalf of Marcos Villasenor-Diaz, a Hays youngster who faces another open heart surgery this summer.

Whitmer submitted the following information with help from Marcos' mother Maria Villasenor-Diaz.

Marcos Villasenor-Diaz is an awesome, tough and faith-filled 11-year-old kiddo who just wrapped up fifth grade in Hays.

Marcos went through an intense and scary open heart surgery mid-April, which was supposed to be a four-hour procedure that turned into 12. It was the toughest heart surgery his surgeon had ever performed, and because of the toll it took on Marcos’ body, they weren’t able to finish everything they needed to in one day.

Concerned about his other organs due to the duration and seriousness of the surgery, the doctor decided to schedule a follow-up surgery on July 17. Marcos heads back to Kansas City then so the doctors can balloon the valve behind his heart. This will open up the remaining blockage in his heart, allowing him to finally receive better oxygen. He has also been seeing a hematologist and has weekly appointments in Wichita or Kansas City all throughout the summer.

With the weekly out-of-town appointments comes more financial need for fuel, hotel stays for their family of four, and meals, on top of the medical bills they’re trying to keep up with. Marcos’ doctor also strongly encourages them to purchase a new medical bed for his condition. This all adds up quickly and is overwhelming for this wonderful family, who is so full of hope and great strength.

Sergio and Maria Villasenor simply want to see their son strong and happy again after all of these procedures are behind him! They look forward to the day that he can run around and be an energetic kid again. He is still very weak and tires quickly due to the enlargement of his heart, which should eventually shrink back down to normal size over the next year.

I have never met a family so full of hope, leaning on their faith and the Lord to help see them through this journey. After all, Marcos has been a fighter since he was 2-years-old!

So far in 2025, Hays has received a total 10.94 inches of moisture. The cumulative total through the end of June is 11.31 inches.&nbsp;

The month of June is behind average. So far this month, 2.06 inches of rain has fallen with the average monthly total for all of June at 3.38 inches.&nbsp;

Half inch of rain falls overnight in Hays

FHSU crime log: June 20-26, 2025

Construction is scheduled to begin&nbsp; before the end of the year on homes in the Grove addition.

The addition will include 50 single-family homes, 50 villas and four duplexes.

Construction crews, which are ahead of schedule, are very close to completing the streets, sewer, water curbs and gutters. That work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks, followed by the electrical installation.&nbsp;

Construction on houses should start in September or October.

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/52b97519-b934-46eb-bdf3-8bd246bf2675">Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center</a>&nbsp;is expected to be completed by late July. The center will be the new home for the Hays Senior Center, a new child care center operated by Bright Minds Academy and multi-use community rooms.

A ribbon cutting for that facility is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 29.

Grow Hays is still a little short of budget for the community center. Anyone interesting in donating to that project can contact Grow Hays at&nbsp;785-628-3102.

Mayor Sandy Jacobs said the community center will be an amazing facility. She said she expects many more seniors to participate in the senior center when it moves into its new facility.

"Besides that, when you walk into that big open space with the glass in the back, it is really a special place," she said, "and I can't imagine if I lived in the Grove that I wouldn't want to rent those units for family gatherings."

The other housing addition Grow Hays has been heavily involved with, the Tallgrass Addition, has been highly successful, Doug Williams, Grow Hays executive director, said.

Since developers began building there in 2022, all the homes have sold before they were completed, with a waiting list still in place.

That demand, combined with a 2019 study showing seniors were a significant economic driver and recruitment opportunity for the community, prompted Grow Hays to embark on the Grove project.

Although the addition is geared toward seniors, it will have no age restrictions, Williams said.

The addition is conveniently located next to HaysMed as well as the Center for Health Improvement.

In addition, the Grove will feature a multi-use path that will eventually connect existing paths running from the Hays Recreation Center, behind HaysMed, to the Sternberg Museum and on to Hall Street, and ultimately 41st Street in northwest Hays.

When both the Grove trail and a section being built by the city connect, there will be six miles of continuous trail.

&nbsp;Some of the features of the homes will include • Slab on grade construction • 3-foot doorways • Open floor plans • 9-foot ceilings • Granite, quartz or onyx counter tops • Solid core doors • High efficiency HVAC • Optional storm shelters

A homeowners association will be responsible for all exterior maintenance.

This includes • Insurance for exteriors and exterior repairs on all of the homes, including roofs and siding • Lawn maintenance • Snow removal&nbsp;

Homeowners association fees have yet to be calculated. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/43bd3666-a30c-449a-acde-9e1bec020952">The Grove is being built within a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District, so homeowners will not be required to pay special assessments.</a>

Homeowners will be responsible for insuring the interior and their contents.

"You do subject yourself to certain rules and regulations," Williams said. "You're not going to park your boat in front of your unit. You're not going to park your camper in front of your unit. There are some limitations. That is just the way it is.

"Unfortunately, if you can't live with that, it's probably not a good place for you to be."

Pets will be allowed, although the homeowners association may have restrictions on the types and sizes of pets.

The homeowners association will likely restrict short-term rentals and Airbnbs. Although there may be some allowances for long-term rentals, Williams said he doubted investors would purchase these homes at these prices as rental properties.

The original plan was to build multi-family units on the corner of 27th and Canterbury streets, but developers seemed less interested in this concept, Williams said.

Grow Hays pivoted and decided to build the Villas.

These will be two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-car-garage patio homes.

The homes' entrances will face each other in a courtyard configuration, with the garages in the rear of the homes off of a paved alley.

Williams said the housing addition will be dense, but private. The patios will be on opposite sides of each other. There will also be provisions for privacy or pet fencing if desired.

The Villas will be offered at a lower price point, with smaller square footage — specifically 1,000 square feet — compared to the 1,500 square feet in the homes in the Grove proper.

The villas will feature similar interior amenities to those of the other homes in the Grove. The garages will be slightly oversized to accommodate more storage. The patio homes can also be equipped with storm shelters.

Work on the Villas is further behind the Grove proper because Grow Hays was waiting to take control of the last existing home on the parcel. It will be either sold and moved or demolished, Williams said.

The larger homes in the Grove will cost about $390,000 or more, depending on floor plan and interior finishes. The Villas will cost about $295,000 or more.

Williams said although the cost of buying a new home is greater than that of an older home, it may result in your homeowner's insurance, property taxes and utility expenses decreasing.

Williams said Grow Hays has received interest from about 50 potential homeowners, but he does not think all of those individuals will ultimately purchase homes.

The build is going to start with at least five homes, he said.

 </figure>Since developers began building there in 2022, all the homes have sold before they were completed, with a waiting list still in place.That demand, combined with a 2019 study showing seniors were a significant economic driver and recruitment opportunity for the community, prompted Grow Hays to embark on the Grove project.Although the addition is geared toward seniors, it will have no age restrictions, Williams said.The addition is conveniently located next to HaysMed as well as the Center for Health Improvement.In addition, the Grove will feature a multi-use path that will eventually connect existing paths running from the Hays Recreation Center, behind HaysMed, to the Sternberg Museum and on to Hall Street, and ultimately 41st Street in northwest Hays.<figure>

 </figure>When both the Grove trail and a section being built by the city connect, there will be six miles of continuous trail.&nbsp;Some of the features of the homes will include • Slab on grade construction • 3-foot doorways • Open floor plans • 9-foot ceilings • Granite, quartz or onyx counter tops • Solid core doors • High efficiency HVAC • Optional storm sheltersA homeowners association will be responsible for all exterior maintenance.This includes • Insurance for exteriors and exterior repairs on all of the homes, including roofs and siding • Lawn maintenance • Snow removal&nbsp;Homeowners association fees have yet to be calculated. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/43bd3666-a30c-449a-acde-9e1bec020952">The Grove is being built within a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District, so homeowners will not be required to pay special assessments.</a>Homeowners will be responsible for insuring the interior and their contents."You do subject yourself to certain rules and regulations," Williams said. "You're not going to park your boat in front of your unit. You're not going to park your camper in front of your unit. There are some limitations. That is just the way it is."Unfortunately, if you can't live with that, it's probably not a good place for you to be."Pets will be allowed, although the homeowners association may have restrictions on the types and sizes of pets.The homeowners association will likely restrict short-term rentals and Airbnbs. Although there may be some allowances for long-term rentals, Williams said he doubted investors would purchase these homes at these prices as rental properties.<figure>

 </figure>The original plan was to build multi-family units on the corner of 27th and Canterbury streets, but developers seemed less interested in this concept, Williams said.Grow Hays pivoted and decided to build the Villas.These will be two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-car-garage patio homes.The homes' entrances will face each other in a courtyard configuration, with the garages in the rear of the homes off of a paved alley.Williams said the housing addition will be dense, but private. The patios will be on opposite sides of each other. There will also be provisions for privacy or pet fencing if desired.The Villas will be offered at a lower price point, with smaller square footage — specifically 1,000 square feet — compared to the 1,500 square feet in the homes in the Grove proper.The villas will feature similar interior amenities to those of the other homes in the Grove. The garages will be slightly oversized to accommodate more storage. The patio homes can also be equipped with storm shelters.Work on the Villas is further behind the Grove proper because Grow Hays was waiting to take control of the last existing home on the parcel. It will be either sold and moved or demolished, Williams said.The larger homes in the Grove will cost about $390,000 or more, depending on floor plan and interior finishes. The Villas will cost about $295,000 or more.Williams said although the cost of buying a new home is greater than that of an older home, it may result in your homeowner's insurance, property taxes and utility expenses decreasing.Williams said Grow Hays has received interest from about 50 potential homeowners, but he does not think all of those individuals will ultimately purchase homes.The build is going to start with at least five homes, he said.If you are interested in learning more about buying a home in the Grove, you can contact Grow Hays at&nbsp;785-628-3102.

Mature was 75%, behind 91% last year, but near 71% average. Harvested was 20%, well behind 49% last year, and behind 31% average. 

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 29% fair, 53% good, and 12% excellent. Corn emerged was 95%, near 97% last year and 96% average. Silking was 5%, behind 10% last year, and equal to average. Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 30% fair, 55% good, and 9% excellent. 

Soybeans planted was 86%, behind 91% both last year and average. Emerged was 76%, behind 81% both last year and average. Blooming was 1%, equal to last year, and near 2% average.

TOPEKA — Kansas Tourism announced that more than 230 tourism attractions across the state, including the Hays region, are participating in the 2025 Sunflower Summer program. The lineup includes something for every interest and region of the state —&nbsp; museums and historic sites, zoos, arboretums, art centers and more.

Local participating tourism attractions include the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Ellis County Historical Society Museum and historic Fort Hays in Hays, Walter P. Chrysler Boyhood Home and Museum in Ellis, the Trego County Historical Society Museum and Cedar Bluff Lake and State Park, WaKeeney, and the four museums in La Crosse operated by the Rush County Historical Society.&nbsp;

“With such a wide variety of exceptional attractions participating this year, Sunflower Summer continues to open doors for Kansas families to explore and connect with every corner of our state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This program not only creates unforgettable memories for students and parents — it also fuels local economies by drawing visitors to main streets, museums and hidden gems across Kansas.”&nbsp;

The 2025 Sunflower Summer program will run from July 12 to August 3. 

During this period, eligible students and one accompanying adult are granted free one-time access to each participating attraction, once per season. Passes can be claimed through the free Sunflower Summer app and redeemed at the attraction upon arrival. Kansas students from pre-K through 12th grade — including those in public, private and homeschool settings — are eligible to participate. 

The program is exclusively available to Kansas residents.

Hays area attractions among free tourism sites to enjoy during Sunflower Summer

Frequently, I watch ornate box turtles crossing country roads or highways. Because I like this pack-its-own-home reptile, I dodge such speed bumps. While their slow lumber across the road triggers a smile, I hadn’t thought much about these Kansas state reptiles until recently when a fond memory knocked on my mental door.

That particular summer, I awakened early every day to enjoy cool mornings as I watered, weeded, and picked veggies. A bonus of rising with the sun included meeting yard neighbors that hide during the heat of the day.

One such friend was a good-sized box turtle that hung out under my rose bushes in the mornings. I’d seen her a couple of times, and that day we met officially. This particular terrapene ornata - according to scientists - was at the larger end of expected sizes for its species. I’d guess its shell was three to four inches across and five or six inches long. I didn’t have a measuring tape on hand at 6:30 a.m. for an official accounting, but she was bigger than most turtles I’d seen navigating Kansas roadways.

This reptile’s shell was dark with distinct yellow markings on the scutes or plates. Before she tucked her head inside her shell, I noted yellowish rather than reddish-orange eyes, which verified she met “she” criteria.

Like all box turtles, she had a hinged plastron that let her tuck her head and limbs safely inside her shell. This ability frustrated hungry coyotes and other predators, but it doesn’t stop a vehicle cruising down the highway, this creature’s worst enemy. The minute she sensed me heading her way, she retracted everything tuckable until she resembled nothing more than a pet rock.

Ignoring her desperate attempt to achieve introverted solitude, I placed my hands carefully along each lower side of her shell and examined her beauty close-up. Like any unhappy female, she promptly got even. With head and legs still safely hidden inside her shell, she peed, which made me jump backward to avoid a splattering.

Once I finished inspecting her masterpiece of black and yellow shell, I rewarded this pretty girl. I set a couple of pieces of melon in front of her so there would be a little something to make her day when she finally popped her head out. Apparently, she can smell and likes cantaloupe because it vanished in the short time I took to climb upstairs where I could spy on her out the kitchen window.

After researching box turtle factoids, I saw why she preferred her flowerbed home. It was damp with lots of available sow bugs or roly-polies and other insects to meet her carnivorous dietary needs. That summer the temperature was more agreeable in that shady corner than most places in the yard. Containing the softest soil on old hilltop, it also offered a perfect site to dig in for winter hibernation, which might explain my new friend’s greater than average size.

Once we’d met, I offered a daily serving of melon or fruit to enhance her diet. With room service like that, this lady was glad to call that eastern corner of Trego County home and continued to show up every summer. I wonder if my walking work of art still shows up for the family that followed us and how big she grew.
