The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work on a series of improvement projects along portions of highways K-18 and U.S. 183 in Rooks and Ellis counties the week of Aug. 11.

The first project will involve milling and overlay on 12 miles of U.S. 183 starting at S Road north of Plainville and ending at the Ellis County line. 

Crews will then resurface approximately 13 miles of K-18 between Palco and Plainville. 

The final project will continue milling and overlay on 15 miles U.S. 183 in Ellis County beginning at the Rooks County line and ending near 55th&nbsp;Street in Hays.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and directed by flaggers and a pilot car through the areas where crews are actively working. Motorists should plan for delays not exceeding 15 minutes during daylight hours.

KDOT expects the projects to be completed in late October, conditions permitting.

Bettis Construction and Asphalt, of Topeka, is the primary contractor for the projects with a combined contract cost of $7.2 million.

Highway construction projects set in Rooks, Ellis counties

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/mchilson/"></a>TOPEKA — The U.S. Department of Energy yanked a $5 billion loan from the company building the Grain Belt Express, saying the project is “unlikely” to meet conditions required for the loan guarantee.&nbsp;

A Kansas activist said the setback is a direct shot at green energy.&nbsp;

“The Grain Belt Express was originally designed for wind and solar,” said Dorothy Barnett, executive director of Climate + Energy Project. “I don’t know how pulling the loan guarantee can be seen as anything but an attempt to stop wind and solar. I’m hopeful Invenergy will be able to move ahead despite this setback.”

The Grain Belt Express, an 800-mile, 5,000-megawatt transmission line that would start in southwest Kansas, and cross the state into Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, has received approval for construction from each state’s energy regulators. In Kansas, that process began 14 years ago in front of the Kansas Corporation Commission.

Chicago-based Invenergy, the&nbsp;<a href="https://bcigem.com/invenergy-a-deep-dive-into-americas-fast-growing-renewable-energy-developer/" target="_blank">country’s largest privately owned</a>&nbsp;green energy company, is building the project. A company spokesperson said the project is open to private financing after losing the federal loan.&nbsp;

The company was disappointed in the Department of Energy decision but the representative said that a “privately financed Grain Belt Express transmission superhighway will advance President Trump’s agenda of American energy and technology dominance.”

The company did not respond to a question about whether private financing has already been secured or is in the process of being raised.&nbsp;

The Grain Belt Express has been billed as a way to move wind energy, specifically from Kansas wind farms, to Indiana and Illinois. Although the line can carry energy from all sources, it was designed to reach areas where transmission infrastructure is sparse so that power generating stations could easily connect and transport energy. In Kansas, that would facilitate moving energy from wind farms, KCC testimony indicated.&nbsp;

The Grain Belt Express has faced multiple challenges since it first went before Kansas regulators for approval, including&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/12/17/grain-belt-route-removed-from-federal-transmission-program-but-project-will-go-forward/">removal from a federal program</a>&nbsp;in December 2024 billed as supporting power transmission in areas with little infrastructure. It also faces criticism&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/09/13/three-kansas-gop-members-working-to-blunt-federal-power-on-transmission-line-corridor">over landowner’s rights</a>, as Invenergy has worked for the past decade to purchase property for the lines.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley was pivotal in ending the loan guarantee, pressuring President Donald Trump and the Department of Energy.&nbsp;

Hawley&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Hawley-Follow-Up-Letter-to-DOE-re-Grain-Belt-Express.pdf" target="_blank">accused the Biden administration</a>&nbsp;of rushing through loan approvals without proper vetting of projects and castigated Energy Secretary Chris Wright in a letter June 25 for not cancelling the Grain Belt Express loan.&nbsp;

Grain Belt Express said Hawley’s attempts to cancel the loan were “bizarre” in a post on X. Hawley had posted on the social media site that he spoke with Trump about stopping the “Green Belt Express scam.”&nbsp;

“This is bizarre,” the company wrote July 10. “Senator Hawley is attempting to kill the largest transmission infrastructure project in U.S. history, which is already approved by all four states and is aligned with the President’s energy dominance agenda. Senator Hawley is trying to deprive Americans of billions of dollars in energy cost savings, thousands of jobs, and grid reliability and national security, all in an era of exponentially growing electricity demand.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trump administration yanks loan from transmission line project meant to carry Kansas wind energy

Two minor changes were made to the draft 2026 budget during the Hays City Commission work session Thursday.

The Rural Opportunity Zone expenditure was adjusted down due to a smaller-than-anticipated number of program applications, said Toby Dougherty, city manager.

City staff also upped the estimate on transient guest taxes by $42,000 for 2026.&nbsp;

"This is something we receive quarterly so it may be hard to get a good grasp on trends," Dougherty said. "But (staff) feels confident enough based off our last couple of disbursements."&nbsp;

The current transient guest tax in Hays, paid by those staying at motels and Airbnbs, is 8.25%.

There was no discussion of the outside agency requests, which included a new additional request from ACCESS public transportation operated by Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas. ACCESS is<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/607b329e-6b85-472d-b51e-171347751383"> asking the city for another $82,500</a>, as well as <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1c896b49-4c58-4425-a998-474c7c4b6da4">county monies</a>, to help replace reduced state funding.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Mason Ruder, vice-mayor, noted there were no new large projects slated for 2026.

"I appreciate this budget," Ruder said. "We want to make sure we're not overextending ourselves, while still taking care of our employees and our the projects we do have."

The top project priorities next year are improvements to Oak Street between 27th and 29th Streets, and 22nd Street from Vine to Canterbury.

A revenue-neutral public hearing, followed by the budget public hearing, will be held during the Sept. 11 city commission meeting.&nbsp;

The mill levy for Hays remains at 25 mills for the 17th consecutive year. Total assessed valuation is up 2.5%.

Jarrod Kuckelman, assistant city manager, presented a resolution and an engineering services agreement to establish a benefit district for&nbsp;32 lots in the Covenant Estates First Addition in west Hays. The developer,&nbsp;Covenant&nbsp;Land &amp; Developing Inc., has petitioned the city for street, stormwater, water, and&nbsp;sanitary sewer improvements through the use of a benefit district.

The engineer’s estimate for total construction costs of the improvements is $2.9 million. Seventy percent&nbsp;of the costs will be special assessed, with&nbsp;the remaining 30% being paid by the developer.&nbsp;No city capital would be expended.

A $221,000 engineering agreement with&nbsp;Sloan Engineering and Consulting, Hays, has been prepared for the infrastructure improvements in Phase 1.

Both items will move on to the Aug. 14 meeting.

High Plains Mental Health Center made a $49,964 request to the city for a portion of opioid settlement funds. The state distributes the opioid funds to municipalities and must be allocated for opioid and substance use disorder abatement. 

City staff recommended the mental health center be granted $45,481 to purchase social detoxification treatment chairs and infusion pumps for its new <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c63c3c89-fd3c-4923-8d01-509e92168ce0">Crisis Intervention Center</a>&nbsp;under construction in Hays. It will serve 28 western Kansas counties.&nbsp;

"This (center) will take a lot of pressure off hospital emergency rooms and jails," said Craig Poe, executive director of High Plains Mental Health Center.

The grant request will be considered at the next commission meeting.&nbsp;

Mayor Sandy Jacobs was absent from the work session.

TOPEKA — A cheese manufacturing plant in western Kansas created hundreds of new jobs, but developers needed help building enough housing for the plant’s workers.

The state program that helped fund 40 homes in a 227-home workforce housing development project in Dodge City did not receive any funding from the Kansas Legislature in its most recent session.

“We’re concerned,” said Ryan Vincent, executive director of the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, a public nonprofit charged with administering state and federal housing assistance.

“Historically, we’ve received some funding for moderate-income housing for a decade plus,” he said during a Tuesday webinar focused on updates about the state of housing in Kansas.

The housing industry in Kansas faces a rollback of funding on the state and federal levels, rising building costs, inflation and tariffs, which could affect the progress made to address a dire need for housing in communities across the state.

“I think a little bit of the challenge is that there’s this perception from the Statehouse, from lawmakers, policymakers that, ‘Well, we’ve given you money. We’ve given you enough to fix the problem,’” Vincent said.

But they’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg, he said.

Typically, the Legislature allocates $2 million on average in the state budget to the housing corporation’s moderate-income program. The program helps fund homeownership and rental opportunities for Kansans who earn too much to qualify for federally subsidized housing but still struggle to afford market-rate housing.

In Dodge City, the Hilmar Cheese Company, one of the world’s largest cheese manufacturers and whey suppliers, is driving economic growth and employment opportunities, said Emily Sharp, communications director for the state housing corporation.

Upon opening in March, the plant employed nearly 250 people, according to Gov. Laura Kelly’s Office.

“Which is really exciting,” Sharp said, “but it also means that there is a huge need for housing to support all those workers, and all of those industries and the development and growth that’s happening there.”

The project will eventually bring hundreds of homes for the plant’s workers, ranging in price from $197,000 to $232,000. More than 90 homes are complete so far. The development will consist of 127 single-family homes, 25 townhomes, 10 tiny homes and eight “barndominiums,” which are metal homes known for their cheap price point and durability.

In Cottonwood Falls, developers converted an old school into 10 moderate-income units. Some of the first tenants in the development were Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Sharp said.

The way the housing corporation sees it, without state funding for the moderate-income program, projects like those in Dodge City and Cottonwood Falls will be more difficult to build.

Regions outside Kansas’ metro areas need about 4,000 houses built annually, according to the housing corporation’s 2021 state needs analysis.

“If we want our employers to be able to expand, if we want our downtowns to be revitalized, if we want our communities to ultimately be successful, we need the economic impact of housing,” Vincent said.

Legislators began discussing housing at the Statehouse before the 2025 session began in January, said Erin Beckerman, general counsel for the housing corporation.

Those talks led to a proposal from Rep. Sean Tarwater, a Stilwell Republican and chair of the House Commerce Committee, to eliminate the affordable housing tax credit entirely, which the House passed. The Senate modified the bill, eliminating one of the two credit options and capping the amount the corporation can dole out to $25 million in 2025 and $8.8 million in the subsequent years until the credit sunsets in 2028.

It was the most significant legislation this year, in the corporation’s eyes, Beckerman said.

The scrutiny of the affordable housing tax credit will continue with an audit report, which is expected to examine the amount of tax credits used since 2022 and revisit the elimination during the 2026 legislative session.

“We are still seeing questions about that program, like the ones raised by the Legislative Post audit committee, just about how the program works and what value it brings to the state in comparison to the fiscal impact of providing those tax credits,” Beckerman said.

The audit is expected to be finished and presented to the Legislative Post Audit Committee this fall.

Beckerman said she also anticipates legislative discussions on whether to restore funding to the moderate-income housing program.

On the federal level, the Trump administration’s budget request proposed consolidating several housing-related programs into a single block grant and cutting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s budget in half. Those proposals would eliminate a grant program the Kansas housing corporation uses for developments and its first-time homebuyer program.

“There’s a lot of difference between what the administration, the Senate and the House have proposed,” Beckerman said, “so it’s hard to say where the funding may end up.”

 </figure>By&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/akaminski/">ANNA KAMINSKI</a> <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/08/06/housing-progress-in-kansas-may-slow-with-state-federal-cuts-to-programs/?emci=885c385e-2d73-f011-8dc9-6045bda9d96b&amp;emdi=142a19e4-6c73-f011-8dc9-6045bda9d96b&amp;ceid=115039">Kansas Reflector</a>TOPEKA — A cheese manufacturing plant in western Kansas created hundreds of new jobs, but developers needed help building enough housing for the plant’s workers.The state program that helped fund 40 homes in a 227-home workforce housing development project in Dodge City did not receive any funding from the Kansas Legislature in its most recent session.“We’re concerned,” said Ryan Vincent, executive director of the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, a public nonprofit charged with administering state and federal housing assistance.“Historically, we’ve received some funding for moderate-income housing for a decade plus,” he said during a Tuesday webinar focused on updates about the state of housing in Kansas.The housing industry in Kansas faces a rollback of funding on the state and federal levels, rising building costs, inflation and tariffs, which could affect the progress made to address a dire need for housing in communities across the state.“I think a little bit of the challenge is that there’s this perception from the Statehouse, from lawmakers, policymakers that, ‘Well, we’ve given you money. We’ve given you enough to fix the problem,’” Vincent said.But they’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg, he said.Typically, the Legislature allocates $2 million on average in the state budget to the housing corporation’s moderate-income program. The program helps fund homeownership and rental opportunities for Kansans who earn too much to qualify for federally subsidized housing but still struggle to afford market-rate housing.In Dodge City, the Hilmar Cheese Company, one of the world’s largest cheese manufacturers and whey suppliers, is driving economic growth and employment opportunities, said Emily Sharp, communications director for the state housing corporation.Upon opening in March, the plant employed nearly 250 people, according to Gov. Laura Kelly’s Office.“Which is really exciting,” Sharp said, “but it also means that there is a huge need for housing to support all those workers, and all of those industries and the development and growth that’s happening there.”The project will eventually bring hundreds of homes for the plant’s workers, ranging in price from $197,000 to $232,000. More than 90 homes are complete so far. The development will consist of 127 single-family homes, 25 townhomes, 10 tiny homes and eight “barndominiums,” which are metal homes known for their cheap price point and durability.In Cottonwood Falls, developers converted an old school into 10 moderate-income units. Some of the first tenants in the development were Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Sharp said.The way the housing corporation sees it, without state funding for the moderate-income program, projects like those in Dodge City and Cottonwood Falls will be more difficult to build.Regions outside Kansas’ metro areas need about 4,000 houses built annually, according to the housing corporation’s 2021 state needs analysis.“If we want our employers to be able to expand, if we want our downtowns to be revitalized, if we want our communities to ultimately be successful, we need the economic impact of housing,” Vincent said.Legislators began discussing housing at the Statehouse before the 2025 session began in January, said Erin Beckerman, general counsel for the housing corporation.Those talks led to a proposal from Rep. Sean Tarwater, a Stilwell Republican and chair of the House Commerce Committee, to eliminate the affordable housing tax credit entirely, which the House passed. The Senate modified the bill, eliminating one of the two credit options and capping the amount the corporation can dole out to $25 million in 2025 and $8.8 million in the subsequent years until the credit sunsets in 2028.It was the most significant legislation this year, in the corporation’s eyes, Beckerman said.The scrutiny of the affordable housing tax credit will continue with an audit report, which is expected to examine the amount of tax credits used since 2022 and revisit the elimination during the 2026 legislative session.“We are still seeing questions about that program, like the ones raised by the Legislative Post audit committee, just about how the program works and what value it brings to the state in comparison to the fiscal impact of providing those tax credits,” Beckerman said.The audit is expected to be finished and presented to the Legislative Post Audit Committee this fall.Beckerman said she also anticipates legislative discussions on whether to restore funding to the moderate-income housing program.On the federal level, the Trump administration’s budget request proposed consolidating several housing-related programs into a single block grant and cutting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s budget in half. Those proposals would eliminate a grant program the Kansas housing corporation uses for developments and its first-time homebuyer program.“There’s a lot of difference between what the administration, the Senate and the House have proposed,” Beckerman said, “so it’s hard to say where the funding may end up.”Correction: A previous version of this story did not include the full costs of new homeownership options in Dodge City.&nbsp;

“This tour is about showing up and fighting back against the extremism we're seeing at all levels of government, but especially in Topeka,” said House Democratic Leader Brandon Woodard. “The Kansas House Democrats are committed to listening to Kansans who are not feeling heard right now and taking action. 2 adults, 3 children hospitalized after I-70 rollover crash

WICHITA, KAN, – A Northwest Kansas businessman pleaded guilty to various charges related to defrauding clients of his accounting firm by falsely claiming money he had stolen was being used to pay business expenses.

According to court documents, Quintin Flanagin, 45, of Colby pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, one count of false statements, and one count of money laundering.

Flanagin, a certified public accountant (CPA), used his status as a signatory on the accounts of his clients’ business, Diamond M. Farms, to make unauthorized transactions between December 2021 and August 2022. 

He wrote multiple checks and initiated wire transfers totaling approximately $409,710 to Middle Finger Ranch under the guise of being payments for farm operations. Middle&nbsp;Finger Ranch is a fictitious business name that Flanagin connected to his personal bank account. Flanagin actually used the illegally obtained funds to pay for the construction on his new home.

Flanagin is scheduled to be sentenced on October 30, 2025. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.

Whether it was football, wrestling, fishing, debating with family, or serving as a deputy, Gaede committed wholeheartedly to every endeavor. He was known for his honesty and integrity, and his dedication to work extended beyond duty. He volunteered his time to enrich the community, actively connecting with schools, sharing laughter, and making law enforcement relatable to the younger generation.

Gaede’s passion for law enforcement began at the age of 7, and it was the only career he had ever wanted. His service was more than a job; it was an honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;Striving to make a meaningful impact in every community he served, he looked after family, friends, and neighbors.

Known for his favorite phrase, “You’re killing me, Smalls!” (a nod to his love of the film The Sandlot), Gaede was a devoted father who never missed his children’s events. One of their favorite evening traditions was a spirited game of “Dog Pile” in the living room, usually right before bedtime. He shared his love for old cars and fishing with his children, especially his eldest son, Axel. Whether fixing a vehicle or working on a house project, his kids were often right by his side.

Always willing to lend a listening ear, he is remembered as a genuine, one-of-a-kind individual. His legacy as a true hero lives on in the hearts of his family and community.

Brandon Gaede Memorial Scholarship established at Colby Community College

Researchers and grocery stores say the Republican-backed law only makes it harder for grocery stores to survive, and the profit margins are already low.

The Merc Co+op started in Lawrence in 1974. It originally was a group of neighbors who pooled money together to buy foods like eggs, milk and fresh produce in bulk.&nbsp;

The group’s original goal was to ensure neighbors had access to healthy foods that weren’t always available for a good price. Eventually, the Merc opened a grocery store with that same mission. But grocery stores like the Merc face a cloudy future because of federal cuts by congressional Republicans signed into law by President Donald Trump.&nbsp;

The One Big Beautiful Bill will cut food assistance to Kansas, with one recent estimate saying 27,000 Kansans would be kicked off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.&nbsp;

Laura Marsh, marketing director at the Merc Co+op, said 5% of total sales at its Lawrence and Kansas City, Kansas, locations were paid through SNAP.&nbsp;

“In grocery, where margins are tight, small dips can have a big impact,” Marsh said over email. “Cuts to SNAP — particularly at this scale — will be deeply felt.”

Families losing benefits will face hard choices while budgeting and have less purchasing power in neighborhood grocery stores, Marsh said.

A recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey found that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/08/04/grocery-prices-tariffs-buy-now-pay-later-poll?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiospm&amp;stream=top">53% of adults say grocery prices are a major source of stress.</a>

The nonprofit Food Systems for the Future held a virtual panel in July where grocery stores across the country sounded similar alarms.&nbsp;

A South Dakota-based grocery store said 60% of sales at some stores come from SNAP. Another Milwaukee-based store said 68%-71% of its customers use the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

SNAP cuts will increase the number of food deserts, limit food access and reduce the numbers of grocery stores, research papers and experts told The Beacon. What isn’t known is to what extent that will happen.&nbsp;

A full grocery store parking lot and long lines at checkout may seem to suggest that grocery stores are making money. Some do, but stores usually have a 1%-2% net profit margin, said Stephanie Johnson, group vice president at the National Grocers Association.&nbsp;

Johnson said labor is a major cost. So too are refrigeration costs and credit card fees.&nbsp;

She said stores average about 12% of sales from food assistance, while some depend on food assistance for as much as 70% of sales. Some percentages are so high because stores use SNAP data to determine if a grocery store in that location will stay open.&nbsp;

“Those grocers in those low-income communities will really be fighting for their lives,” she said.&nbsp;

The recently approved budget bill cut food assistance in a handful of ways. It shifted millions in costs to states,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/politics-elections-and-government/2025-07-29/kansas-snap-funding-harvesters-food-banks">which could be about $56 million more per year for Kansas</a>. Kansas would lose all SNAP funding if it doesn’t pick up that additional cost.&nbsp;

The bill also<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2025/07/25/missouri-work-requirements-medicaid-mo-healthnet/">&nbsp;imposed work requirements</a>&nbsp;and kicked undocumented immigrants off the program.&nbsp;

Bekah Selby-Leach, director of the Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Wichita State University, said these reductions would mean more grocery stores close. But there isn’t a good estimate for exactly how many will shut down, or where. Rural areas will be hit hard, but that doesn’t mean urban areas will remain untouched.&nbsp;

“The answer to that is a little bit nuanced,” she said.&nbsp;

Researchers from the University of California, Davis Center for Poverty Research said SNAP’s original implementation decades ago increased sales at grocery stores by 1%-2%. SNAP increased grocery store employment by 3%-5%.&nbsp;

SNAP was created in the 1960s. Its creation meant “more people working in food and grocery stores, more employment, higher real payroll and higher real sales,”&nbsp;<a href="https://poverty.ucdavis.edu/sites/main/files/file-attachments/bitler_snap_retailers_brief.pdf?1582578917">the 2020 research paper said</a>.&nbsp;

The program had benefits both for people on the program and off the program, they concluded.&nbsp;

Maurice Wince, a grocery store owner in Milwaukee who spoke on the July panel, is hopeful his store will stay open.&nbsp;

He has the only grocery store within a two-mile radius, and five grocery stores nearby have announced they are closing.&nbsp;

Even if he stays open, there is constant risk that he must raise prices and reduce hours to stay afloat. But losing a large chunk of his business is just not sustainable.&nbsp;

“We combat childhood obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and other heart ailments by bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to our customers,” he said.

One Big Beautiful Bill will close grocery stores and create new food deserts in Kansas

The Wichita State University Board of Trustees has approved up to $750,000 to fund a comprehensive feasibility study exploring the creation of Kansas’ first dental school. This is inclusive of support from Fort Hays State University, a partner in the project, which aims to address the state’s shortage of dentists, particularly in rural communities.

The study, to be completed by fall 2026, will evaluate the scope, scale and structure of a potential dental school based in Wichita, with a presence in rural Kansas through Fort Hays State. 

Key areas of focus include cohort size, faculty and staff needs, accreditation requirements, facility planning and potential partnerships with Federally Qualified Health Centers to expand clinical access.

If found feasible, the proposed dental school would be part of Phase II of the Wichita Biomedical Campus, a joint initiative between Wichita State and the University of Kansas to strengthen the state’s health care education pipeline. Phase I of the campus — currently under construction in downtown Wichita — is expected to be completed in 2026 and will house health sciences programs from both institutions.

Kansas faces significant gaps in oral health care, with many rural counties lacking practicing dentists. Today, close to 600,000 Kansans have little to no access to professional dental care. Additionally, 20 Kansas counties currently have no practicing dentists, and more than 80% of the state’s 105 counties are experiencing a serious shortage of dentists.

This challenge impacts Kansas’ children, the elderly, and low-income families the hardest, as only one in four dentists in our state serve Medicaid patients. The lack of a doctoral dental education program in Kansas means that the state does not benefit from an annual influx of dental program graduates, who are more likely to establish a practice in the state.

Wichita State President Rick Muma said the study is a bold step toward solving one of the state’s most pressing health care challenges.

“Access to dental care should not depend on your ZIP code,” Muma said. “By partnering with Fort Hays State and the dental community, we can design a program that educates future dentists in Kansas, keeps them in Kansas and ensures every Kansan can get the care they need.”

The study will provide the foundation for building a program that serves Kansas residents statewide, and the process will be guided by data, collaboration and a statewide focus.

“This study will allow us to map out the facilities, faculty, partnerships and accreditation pathways needed to launch a high-quality dental school that meets the realities of our state,” said Monica Lounsbery, Wichita State’s senior executive vice president and provost. “It’s about creating a sustainable model that strengthens our health care workforce and improves lives for generations to come.”

“Nowhere is the critical shortage of access to professional dental care more pressing than in the rural Kansas counties served by Fort Hays State University,” said FHSU President Tisa Mason. “We are honored to join Wichita State University in this important initiative.”

The feasibility study will engage stakeholders from across the state, including dental professionals, policymakers and health care providers, to ensure the proposed program is responsive to Kansas’ unique needs.

Federal Trade Commission: Spot scams while getting out of debt

Blue-green algae blooms are an issue that usually occurs during the spring and summer. Calm, sunny, dry, and hot days of summer create ideal conditions for blue-green algae to thrive in our livestock ponds. Blue-green algae occurrence is sporadic, making its threat unpredictable. 

Despite its name, these blooms are not algae, but a cyanobacteria. Some of these cyanobacteria can produce and release dangerous toxins that are of major concern for our livestock.

These “cyanotoxins” typically show up as either neurotoxins, or hepatotoxins which means they can damage the nervous system or the liver function of animals. 

Typically, the first clinical sign noticed in pasture cattle that have consumed neurotoxins are dead cattle. If found early enough, cattle may have muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, seizures, slobbering, and diarrhea. Hepatotoxins can cause an acute death similar to neurotoxins or lead to delayed issues with liver failure. An example of this would be weight loss and photosensitization, which can be recognized by severe sun burns on areas of the body not covered with hair. 

Since there are several causes of acute death in pasture cattle, contact your local veterinarian for diagnosis. Unfortunately, there are no known antidotes to these cyanotoxins. So, understanding what to look for, and avoiding livestock exposure is important.

Toxin concentrations in affected water can vary drastically. The wind can move these blooms and concentrate them in certain areas along the shorelines of ponds. These concentrations increase the lethality of the toxic blooms.

There are some options for livestock producers if blue-green algae is suspected or has been identified. Of course, fencing off natural water sources and providing alternative water sources is the best option (well water, hauled water), but is typically financially limiting. Fencing off certain areas of the ponds (downwind portion of ponds) may help limit exposure. Improved&nbsp;watering areas, such as pipe-fed waterers, may also limit exposure as long as the water inlet is located in a low-risk area of the pond. A submerged inlet in the center of the pond is an area where the cyanobacteria are unlikely to concentrate. Improved water sources like this will also help increase other water quality attributes. Controlled access and tank waterers decrease sediment, nutrients and fecal coliform bacteria from building up in the water source. Treatment of the water source with copper sulfate has historically been recommended. However, the copper accumulates in the pond, leading to other potential problems with plants and animals alike and is not recommended. Barley straw is also often discussed as a control measure. While the mechanism is unknown, barley straw may help reduce new blooms from forming but do not directly kill active blooms.Monitoring of stock ponds during the summer months and having a plan in place to combat blue-green algae will help ensure the health and wellbeing of our herds.
