Ellis County was listed as being in severe drought as of Thursday when the Kansas Drought Monitor map was released.
The map includes precipitation through Tuesday, May 12.
Hays has received about a half inch of rain in May, a fraction of the 3.33 inches the city receives in an average year.
This year, Hays has received 3.42 inches of rain, but the average precipitation through the end of May for Hays is 7.92 inches.
Rain is in the forecast for this weekend.
Hays has a 20% chance of rain Sunday night and Monday, a 30% chance of rain on Monday night and chances of rain again on Wednesday night and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
