Cathy Boos has been promoted to the position of marketing and sales director for Salina Presbyterian Manor.

Boos
 first joined the senior living community as its life enrichment 
director in March 2016. She left for a position with the Catholic 
Diocese of Salina, but it wasn’t long before she returned to 
Presbyterian Manor.

“After leaving for a short time, I knew my 
passion and purpose was with the Manor and its residents,” Boos said. 
“They are my family, and I love them all.”

She served as the administrative assistant from February 2020 until her promotion in November.

Her
 work history and approach to her job mean Boos will be a good fit in 
her new position, said Jenni Jones, regional director of marketing for 
PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America).

“Cathy will be a true 
asset with her prior experience in Life Enrichment and the 
Administrative Assistant role,” said Jenni, who once held the marketing 
and sales position at Salina Presbyterian Manor. “Cathy has a 
professional customer service approach and a compassionate heart to 
provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.”

Christian Gilbert, Presbyterian Manor’s executive director, agrees.

“Cathy’s
 focus every day has been to make the residents’ lives better,” he said.
 “I have no doubt that incoming residents will feel just as loved and 
cared for by her as our current residents. She is all about 
relationships.”

A native of Victoria, Boos earned a bachelor of 
business administration with an emphasis in marketing from Fort Hays 
State University. Her career includes stints as a donor recruitment 
representative for the American Red Cross and sales and marketing 
director for Smoky Hill Rehabilitation.

Outside work, Boos stays 
active in the community by serving on the board of directors for both 
Sunflower Adult Day Services and Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. 
She is also a member of the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi.

GOVE COUNTY —Gove County Sheriff Allan Weber who was flown to a Denver hospital in respiratory distress on October 18, due to Covid-19 complications has died.

&nbsp;The sheriff's office reported via social media Friday, "It is with profound sadness that we are reporting that our Sheriff, Public Information Officer and EOC Community Liaison, Allan Weber <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/family-travel-expenses-to-denver?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=p_cf%20share-flow-1&amp;fbclid=IwAR0llTgYYnxJt1iEk6eZczrjb2u-xRGVBrbusJb8w7pm17htmgNfeW2uCMk">has passed away. </a>

   His smile and sense of humor was second to none, and shadowed only by his loving, tender heart.     His family was the source of his being;   affectionately called “Bacha” by his grandchildren, he told endless stories about them - and his tough exterior would melt at the mention of their names.    

He was also an extraordinary public servant both locally and at the state level, and honored his brotherhood ceaselessly.   He loved his blue family as his true family, he held them all in the highest regard.

He represented everything that is good about us here in Gove County.   He embodied faith, family, friendship, and forgiveness, living these principles out loud every day.    

In a time of terrible sadness, let us find peace knowing he was met on the other side by his beloved parents, extended family and many friends.  

In an extension of the ties that bind us as a community, let us also settle into a mindset of peace and wellbeing for one another to honor his memory.

May you Rest in Peace Sheriff Weber.   You will be missed."

In conjunction with the Ellis County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office has implemented its pandemic protocol and is working to safely mitigate the situation.&nbsp;

The inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19 are showing minor symptoms and are currently quarantined in isolation pods.

All inmates are being monitored by medical staff and the sheriff's office would like to ensure the public that there is no risk to the resident of Ellis County.

The Ellis County Health Department on Friday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days fell from 17 on Wednesday to 12 on Friday.

The department also announced an additional coronavirus-related death, bringing the total to 31.

There were 132 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Wednesday. There are currently 295 active cases, including 11 active hospitalizations of Ellis County residents, and 2,740 recovered cases.

As of Friday, there were 25 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, down from 27 on Thursday, with 21 of those active patients and four in the recovery phase.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests fell to 13.5 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,066 total cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 31 coronavirus-related deaths.

Of the total 15,962 tests administered, 18 percent have returned positive for COVID-19.

NOTE:&nbsp;"New cases" reflects cases reported by the Ellis County Health Department between regular reporting periods of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. "Total cases" reflects all cases reported by the department. "My heart kind of hurts for her for what she's going through."

Hays Mayor Shaun Musil at Thursday's city commission work session talked about Tuesday's abrupt <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/bd3737db-5d6a-462b-bf6a-8ee7e8ea4ec3">resignation of Dodge City Mayor Joyce Warshaw</a> after she received threats for supporting a face mask mandate.

"We all personally dealt with that here," Musil noted, "and I'm just very thankful&nbsp;for the team we have and the community support we've had here."

"Even though there were some very loud people, we had good community support and we continue to have that," he said.

On Thursday, it was reported an investigation by Dodge City police concluded&nbsp;the messages received by Warshaw <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/94cfaa78-cbcf-43ae-b24c-0f478d71f732">did not meet the elements required by Kansas Criminal Statutes regarding threats</a>.

Musil acknowledged there will always be people who refuse to wear a face mask despite the coronavirus pandemic.

"Our numbers [of COVID-19 positive tests in Ellis County] are going down so I think we're doing something right and we just have to continue doing the right thing. 

"Thank you to the community of Hays," Musil said at the end of the work session.&nbsp;

The city of Hays enacted a mandatory face covering ordinance on July 27. The ordinance was extended on Oct. 2 and will <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b927d4eb-e1b4-4c57-bc57-56ad4e14516e">remain in place until certain metrics are met</a>.&nbsp;

The mandate will be lifted if the seven-day average of new cases is at five or fewer for 14 consecutive days — or if Gov. Laura Kelly's statewide emergency declaration is lifted.

Ellis County commissioners took no action Nov. 23 on a resolution regarding Kelly's latest statewide mask mandate, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/3d53f6e9-36be-48b9-851d-d86c38d7ffd5">allowing it to go into effect countywide</a> with no local vote.

* Improvements to the water plant laboratory and break room located at 1000 Vine and used 24 hours a day. Water analyses are done twice an hour and lab counter tops have not been replaced in 26 years. The single bid is $38,000 from Paul Wertenberger Construction, Hays.

* Water line improvements for 2020 along 19th Street from Hall to Walnut, and along Elm from 17th Street to the intersection of 23rd and Canal Street. The low bid is from J Corp, Hays, for $443,488.

* Airport south apron rehabilitation and beacon replacement design agreement with the city's airport engineering consultant, Burns and McDonnell for&nbsp;$122,130. The fee is eligible for 90 percent funding from the Federal Aviation Administration.&nbsp;

* Rezoning of the former Washington School at 305 Main from Public Institutional to Residential Multi-Family.&nbsp;&nbsp;USD 489 has sold the property to OPG Stonepost Lofts Partners. The new&nbsp;owners plan to renovate the building and use the property for multi-family housing.

* 2020 city boundary resolution following the annexation of property&nbsp;north of East 33rd and Sherman Avenue.

Commissioners will vote on the items Dec. 22. They'll meet Tuesday rather than Thu., Dec. 24, which is Christmas Eve.&nbsp;

The Pay it Forward Store, which offers Christmas gifts to needy families, will be in La Crosse this year instead of Hays.

The store will be open for one day only 9 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the basement of the First Christian Church, 619 Oak St., La Crosse.

The store offers new and gently used toys, gifts for teens, household items and decorations. It is a little bit of everything,&nbsp;expect clothes, said founder Heather Gray.

Although the store has offered bicycles in the past, it will not have any this year.

All items are free. You do not have to fill out any paperwork or meet income guidelines.

Organizers will be limiting the number of people in the store at one time this year to promote social distancing. Masks are not mandated in Rush County; however, Gray said they are highly encouraged.

This is the sixth year for the Pay It Forward Store. Last year, the store was at Big Creek Crossing. However, the space that Pay it Forward has used in the past was rented this year, and the mall said it did not have a space open for the store this year.

Gray said she thought she had another location secured in Hays, but that location fell through at the last minute.

Gray said she has contacted all potential donors that have made comments on the Pay It Forward's events page and made arrangements to pick up and transport donations from Hays to La Crosse.

Several people from Hays have commented on the store's Facebook page they do not have transportation to LaCrosse but still need Christmas presents.&nbsp;

A couple of people have offered to shop for those families and deliver the presents in Hays. Families can comment in the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/940114906129036">store's discussion group </a>or call or text Gray at 785-432-3377. You can also reach Gray through the store's page or a personal Facebook message.

Gray received about a dozen hateful personal messages when she announced the store would be in LaCrosse this year.&nbsp;

"We have done everything in our power to even find a place," she said.

She said she would have had to cancel the store completely had the church in La Crosse not offered a space at the last minute.&nbsp;

Pay it Forward Store opens Saturday in La Crosse

Ellis County selected to receive Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program grant

TOPEKA&nbsp;– This week, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Ellis County was selected to receive funding as part of the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program.&nbsp;

Kelly and Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz announced the selection as part of the state-local partnership program that is part of the IKE transportation program. This year’s selections include 27 counties and three cities who will receive a combined total of $5.1 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Congratulations to Ellis County for submitting a successful application and securing local matching funds for a bridge project that is critical to the community’s success,”&nbsp;Kelly said.&nbsp;“Improving the overall transportation system across our state is integral to our economic recovery, and an important step forward as we work to invest in and rebuild our state’s foundation.”&nbsp;

“We are very thankful&nbsp;KDOT saw the need to assist us with repairing&nbsp;this&nbsp;bridge,”&nbsp;said Ellis County Public Works Director Bill Ring. “This bridge is used for agriculture traffic to go into the county to our&nbsp;north&nbsp;and will&nbsp;keep us from creating detour routes that would add miles of travel to the farmers.”&nbsp;

Funds will be used for the replacement of the bridge located approximately 14 miles north and half a mile east of Catharine on 310th&nbsp;Avenue. The county also received funding to permanently close and remove an additional bridge located 2 miles east of Ellis on 140th&nbsp;Avenue.&nbsp;

KDOT reinstated this bridge program in 2019 to assist cities and counties by providing up to $150,000 toward the replacement or rehabilitation of a bridge on the local roadway system.&nbsp; For this recent round of KLBIP selections, a total of 68 applications from 61 local public agencies were received with requests for $11.4 million in funds. The total value of the individual bridge replacement costs ranged from $150,000 to $2.4 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We welcome opportunities to partner with Kansas cities and counties to replace or rehabilitate deteriorating bridges,”&nbsp;Lorenz said. “This program allows KDOT to help communities move forward with projects that keep critical local roadways open and viable.”&nbsp;

The KLBIP&nbsp;targets bridges 20-50 feet in length and&nbsp;with&nbsp;a daily vehicle count of less than 100. <h2>Ellis County selected to receive Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program grant</h2>Office of the GovernorTOPEKA&nbsp;– This week, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Ellis County was selected to receive funding as part of the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program.&nbsp;Kelly and Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz announced the selection as part of the state-local partnership program that is part of the IKE transportation program. This year’s selections include 27 counties and three cities who will receive a combined total of $5.1 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Congratulations to Ellis County for submitting a successful application and securing local matching funds for a bridge project that is critical to the community’s success,”&nbsp;Kelly said.&nbsp;“Improving the overall transportation system across our state is integral to our economic recovery, and an important step forward as we work to invest in and rebuild our state’s foundation.”&nbsp;“We are very thankful&nbsp;KDOT saw the need to assist us with repairing&nbsp;this&nbsp;bridge,”&nbsp;said Ellis County Public Works Director Bill Ring. “This bridge is used for agriculture traffic to go into the county to our&nbsp;north&nbsp;and will&nbsp;keep us from creating detour routes that would add miles of travel to the farmers.”&nbsp;Funds will be used for the replacement of the bridge located approximately 14 miles north and half a mile east of Catharine on 310th&nbsp;Avenue. The county also received funding to permanently close and remove an additional bridge located 2 miles east of Ellis on 140th&nbsp;Avenue.&nbsp;KDOT reinstated this bridge program in 2019 to assist cities and counties by providing up to $150,000 toward the replacement or rehabilitation of a bridge on the local roadway system.&nbsp; For this recent round of KLBIP selections, a total of 68 applications from 61 local public agencies were received with requests for $11.4 million in funds. The total value of the individual bridge replacement costs ranged from $150,000 to $2.4 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We welcome opportunities to partner with Kansas cities and counties to replace or rehabilitate deteriorating bridges,”&nbsp;Lorenz said. “This program allows KDOT to help communities move forward with projects that keep critical local roadways open and viable.”&nbsp;The KLBIP&nbsp;targets bridges 20-50 feet in length and&nbsp;with&nbsp;a daily vehicle count of less than 100. To make the many supplies and materials available to classroom teachers, the school is creating mobile STEAM carts stocked with a variety of educational tools and supplies (marbles, coding robots, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, etc.).

Several months ago, Bank of Hays applied for a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka under its $500 for Good program for Holy Family's project.

The grant award for the school was announced Wednesday.

The $500 will be used to help purchase and stock the STEAM carts, so students can more easily engage in hands-on learning opportunities.

Holy Family receives $500 grant for STEAM materials

Hostesses often worry about what to feed guests with special dietary needs at holiday time. This is especially true for a guest with a strong allergy to wheat, for example, or someone with insulin-dependent diabetes. Providing several simple whole food choices and staying away from so many highly processed foods is the best plan I can offer.&nbsp;

Most health problems accumulate from what we do day in and day out. Take for example, someone on a restricted fat and cholesterol diet for coronary heart disease. The newest dietary guidelines from the American Heart Association emphasize this point. They recommend that it is the total diet over several days or a week rather than what one eats in any given meal or even on a given day. This allows for some flexibility in choosing a variety of foods that are both nutritious and delicious.

While a calorie-laden Christmas dinner certainly does not help someone maintain or lose weight, it is a good time to exercise a little control. If you find yourself in the midst of holiday binge, just slow down your eating, refuse the seconds and talk more. If it is a buffet, move away from the food and sip on a low-calorie beverage.

As a hostess, you can be considerate of your guests’ dietary needs by providing some alternatives. For a person allergic to the gluten protein in wheat, provide a rice or corn dish. Make a rice crust for the pumpkin pie or consider making a crustless pumpkin pie as a healthier alternative.

If guests with special dietary needs will be spending several days with you, invite them to help with the meal planning and perhaps even prepare one of their favorite dishes. The best advice is to not make a big deal out of the differences but focus on simple whole food choices.

KRUG: Accommodating special diets during the holidays

SHERMAN COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Thursday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Ford SUV driven by William Deane Foote, 66, Castle Valley, UT., was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Edson exit.

The SUV left the roadway veering into the median. The driver attempted to get back onto the roadway,&nbsp; struck&nbsp; an eastbound 2020 Freightline semi. The collision&nbsp; caused the SUV to roll back into the median and roll onto the passenger side.

EMS transported Foote and a passenger&nbsp;Janice Elizabeth Foote, 67, Castle Valley, UT., to the hospital in Goodland.&nbsp; The semi driver&nbsp;Benson, Freddie Lee Benson, 57, Horn Lake, Mississippi, was not injured. The occupants of the SUV were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after SUV, semi crash on I-70

Although the doors to the Hays Community Theatre have been shuttered for almost nine months, the HCT team was able to come together for a special performance that will be broadcast on YouTube this week.

Hays resident and community theater founder Cheryl Glassman's daughter Sarah's theater company, HiGlass Productions, is compiling a holiday variety show that will be broadcast virtually at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Thursday, Dec. 17. You can find a link on HiGlass' website <a href="https://www.higlassproductions.com/">www.higlassproductions.com</a> or on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/higlassproductions">Facebook page</a>.

HiGlass' Christmas show is usually performed live in New York, but that was not possible this year because of COVID.

Sarah, 38, is a Thomas More Prep-Marian graduate and has lived in New York for 15 years, working in theater.

All 20 acts were prerecorded for the show titled "We Need a Little Christmas," including HCT's piece, which was shot last week.

The HCT's 10-member cast sang "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," which was on the soundtrack for the movie "Scrooged" starring Bill Murray.

In addition to the HCT piece, Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council director, will be reading a Christmas story for the production.

HCT members helped with costumes and props.

"Everybody kind of chipped in and helped out as they could," Glassman said. ... "Everybody pulled together to do something."

The cast ranged in age from 13 to 75 with singers from all walks of life, including a nurse, chaplain, students, business people and a construction worker.

"What is important to me is that people from all walks of life can come together to do something like that. We're all just sitting there putting it together," Glassman said. "It was fun to work with them. It doesn't matter where you come from when it comes to something like this."

HCT was able to present its annual Halloween walk, which was outside, but has not been able to mount any other performances because of concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

"I think the most important thing is not just the actors, but the people in the community need something to uplift them during this time," Glassman said, "because it is just a difficult situation for everyone"

She said the show also gave participants a little lift during the Christmas season.&nbsp;

"As we continued to rehearse, everyone just became more positive," Glassman said. "I could just sense it."&nbsp;

The show was featured in <a href="https://www.broadwayworld.com/cabaret/article/BWW-Previews-HiGlass-Productions-Presents-WE-NEED-A-LITTLE-CHRISTMAS-December-17th-on-YouTube-20201207">Broadway World</a>, a trade publication published in New York. When the cast heard that news, they cheered, Glassman said.

"I think people will really enjoy the things they put into it and all of the different characters and all of the different people that are going to be part of it," Glassman said of the show. "This will give people a few minutes to sit back and watch something that is there to help us to feel better about things right now."

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The six state universities in Kansas will not raise on-campus housing and dining fees next year. The Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday voted to keep those fees flat, despite higher costs and fewer students because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

University officials told the regents the schools need to keep costs affordable for students. The regents also appointed a committee to begin the search for a new Wichita State president. 

Former president Jay Golden resigned abruptly in September, after he was criticized for retracting an invitation to Ivanka Trump to speak at the university.

Universities' housing, dining fees won't rise next year

The ladies in the Prayers and Squares Quilt Ministry are not just making quilts, they are blanketing people with prayers.

The group, which is a ministry of Celebration Community Church in Hays, is comprised of women — some of whom drive hours to come to the monthly meetings to sew, fellowship and pray for people they often don't know and will never meet.

When the group started in 2010, it did not have access to a long-arm quilting machine, so the quilts were all hand tied. As the women tied each knot in the quilts, they said prayers for the recipients.

Many of these quilts went to the sick, and visitors and health care workers were also encouraged to tie knots in the quilts and say prayers for the owners.&nbsp;

"When this quilt is around you, you know that God is also wrapping His arms around you to give you courage, strength and His everlasting love," says the note that goes out with each prayer quilt.

Although now the group's quilts are machine-quilted for more durability, they still come with many prayers.

"We are passionate about a couple of things. We are passionate about the quilting, but also about the prayers," one of the group members said. "No quilt leaves without us praying for the people. There is nothing magical about the quilt. It is about the prayers."

The group's latest effort, which they call being the hands and feet of Jesus, was delivery of prayer quilts to all of the nursing home residents in Ellis County on Monday.

All 140 quilts were finished in a month and a half, some with bright Christmas colors to warm local elders this holiday season.

"We just want them to know they are cared for and loved and they've not been forgotten during this pandemic time," Amanda Gittinger, group leader, said.

Another recent project was Bless Our Heroes Prayer Patches, which were square hand-size quilt pieces that were given to area first responders. Each square was blessed with a prayer for the recipient.

The ministry, which is 13-members strong, has been very prolific. In its decade of service, the group has made and given away 563 prayer quilts.

The group has also created quilts for the Pregnancy Lifeline of Fort Worth, Texas, which gives quilts to mothers who choose to not abort their babies; Teresa Boos, a clinical social worker who gives quilts to veterans who struggle with PTSD; Quilts of Compassion, of Toledo, Ohio, which distributes quilts to hospitalized patients, as well as families recovering from natural disasters; and foster families within Celebration Community Church or families who adopt.

The group has also sewn items for RedeemUnited of Haiti, Celebration's food ministry, the local special needs community, Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, pillowcase dresses for children in Africa and cloth face masks during the pandemic.

The group has created 1,000 items just this year.

The group has also taught sewing classes to girls. That has been put on hold since the pandemic, but the group hopes to resurrect the classes as pandemic restrictions ease.

"He gives us all talents and He expects us to use them," a group member said. "This is our talent."

Marilyn Gittinger, quilter, said the work is fulfilling.

&nbsp;The group receives thank you notes, especially from recipients of the patriotic quilts.

"You get the stories back about how grateful they are they were even considered worthy of receiving a quilt," a group member said. "That is just so heart-touching. It just makes you want to make more and help other people."

A note just came in from a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, who is now serving as a federal law enforcement officer.&nbsp;

Amanda&nbsp;Gittiner shared with the other group members the message on the card.

"I recently received a beautiful red, white and blue quit from Teresa [Boos]. It meant more to me than you may ever realize. Not only was it a true act of service, it was also beautifully made by caring and loving hands. I will proudly display and use this quilt daily.&nbsp;

Just like many other veterans and law enforcement officers, I often struggle with things I have experienced in the performance of my duties.

Receiving a gift such as this reminds me why I stepped up to serve my country and my community. It reminds me that we are not forgotten and the sacrifices that my brothers and sisters and I made are appreciated. May God bless the hands that made this quilt and all the ladies who have taken time to make a veteran feel the way I felt when I received this gift.&nbsp;

What you are doing matters. I pray that God will bless you and others who are impacted by your ministry.&nbsp;

There are two mother-daughter duos in the group, both of whom had few sewing skills when they joined the ministry.

Amanda Gittiner said she was terrified at first, starting in the group just tying quilts. Her mom, who is also in the group and drives in from Goodland for the group's monthly meetings, left her a sewing machine for Amanda when she got married.

Some of the fabric is donated. The ministry also received monetary donations and a budget from Celebration Community Church.

The women sew both together at month meetings and semi-annual retreats with what some call their "quilting family" as well as at home between meetings.

Since the group usually meets on weekends, they are sometimes called upon to sew on a button for a wedding parties or fix a hem. The ladies laughed as the recounted some of their needle-and-thread adventures.

"It is so rewarding to come when everything in the nation tends to be so negative," a group member said. "You can come here and it's like a therapy. You can come here and get renewed. Everything is positive. It is a great way to fellowship with other ladies and know you are making a difference."

 </figure>Although now the group's quilts are machine-quilted for more durability, they still come with many prayers."We are passionate about a couple of things. We are passionate about the quilting, but also about the prayers," one of the group members said. "No quilt leaves without us praying for the people. There is nothing magical about the quilt. It is about the prayers."The group's latest effort, which they call being the hands and feet of Jesus, was delivery of prayer quilts to all of the nursing home residents in Ellis County on Monday.All 140 quilts were finished in a month and a half, some with bright Christmas colors to warm local elders this holiday season."We just want them to know they are cared for and loved and they've not been forgotten during this pandemic time," Amanda Gittinger, group leader, said.Another recent project was Bless Our Heroes Prayer Patches, which were square hand-size quilt pieces that were given to area first responders. Each square was blessed with a prayer for the recipient.<figure>

 </figure>The ministry, which is 13-members strong, has been very prolific. In its decade of service, the group has made and given away 563 prayer quilts.The group has also created quilts for the Pregnancy Lifeline of Fort Worth, Texas, which gives quilts to mothers who choose to not abort their babies; Teresa Boos, a clinical social worker who gives quilts to veterans who struggle with PTSD; Quilts of Compassion, of Toledo, Ohio, which distributes quilts to hospitalized patients, as well as families recovering from natural disasters; and foster families within Celebration Community Church or families who adopt.The group has also sewn items for RedeemUnited of Haiti, Celebration's food ministry, the local special needs community, Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, pillowcase dresses for children in Africa and cloth face masks during the pandemic.The group has created 1,000 items just this year.The group has also taught sewing classes to girls. That has been put on hold since the pandemic, but the group hopes to resurrect the classes as pandemic restrictions ease."He gives us all talents and He expects us to use them," a group member said. "This is our talent."<figure>

 </figure>Marilyn Gittinger, quilter, said the work is fulfilling.&nbsp;The group receives thank you notes, especially from recipients of the patriotic quilts."You get the stories back about how grateful they are they were even considered worthy of receiving a quilt," a group member said. "That is just so heart-touching. It just makes you want to make more and help other people."A note just came in from a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, who is now serving as a federal law enforcement officer.&nbsp;Amanda&nbsp;Gittiner shared with the other group members the message on the card."I recently received a beautiful red, white and blue quit from Teresa [Boos]. It meant more to me than you may ever realize. Not only was it a true act of service, it was also beautifully made by caring and loving hands. I will proudly display and use this quilt daily.&nbsp;Just like many other veterans and law enforcement officers, I often struggle with things I have experienced in the performance of my duties. Receiving a gift such as this reminds me why I stepped up to serve my country and my community. It reminds me that we are not forgotten and the sacrifices that my brothers and sisters and I made are appreciated. May God bless the hands that made this quilt and all the ladies who have taken time to make a veteran feel the way I felt when I received this gift.&nbsp;What you are doing matters. I pray that God will bless you and others who are impacted by your ministry.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>There are two mother-daughter duos in the group, both of whom had few sewing skills when they joined the ministry.Amanda Gittiner said she was terrified at first, starting in the group just tying quilts. Her mom, who is also in the group and drives in from Goodland for the group's monthly meetings, left her a sewing machine for Amanda when she got married."I got the bug," Amanda said.Some of the fabric is donated. The ministry also received monetary donations and a budget from Celebration Community Church.The women sew both together at month meetings and semi-annual retreats with what some call their "quilting family" as well as at home between meetings.Since the group usually meets on weekends, they are sometimes called upon to sew on a button for a wedding parties or fix a hem. The ladies laughed as the recounted some of their needle-and-thread adventures."It is so rewarding to come when everything in the nation tends to be so negative," a group member said. "You can come here and it's like a therapy. You can come here and get renewed. Everything is positive. It is a great way to fellowship with other ladies and know you are making a difference."

NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation raised nearly&nbsp;$167,000 during the fifth&nbsp;annual MyFoundation Campaign. This monthlong matching gift campaign is primarily designed to encourage giving to NCCF’s Grant Endowment fund.

To incentivize giving, the Dane G. Hansen Foundation committed matching dollars for the following:

After raising nearly $92,000 from donors, NCCF received the full $75,000 matching gift from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, raising a total of $167,000. Dollars raised will be invested into the foundation’s endowment funds, making funds available to award grants to support Norton County nonprofits, projects, and programs, and to provide capacity for the organization.

This year’s campaign brings the five-year total to over $725,000.

Norton Co. foundation raises nearly $167,000 in monthlong campaign

MCPHERSON — McPherson College, a four-year private college, recently recognized its highest academic achievers in its fall 2020 Honor Roll and Honorable Mention.

To qualify for the honor roll, students must be a full-time student and earn a grade point average of 3.55 or higher during the previous term. Students earning a grade point average of 3.25 to 3.54 are named to the honorable mention.

McPherson College offers more than 20 bachelor's and pre-professional programs with curriculum that emphasizes entrepreneurship and career-focused education. It was ranked this year by U.S. News &amp; World Report on its "Best Colleges" list and recognized for the sixth year in a row as a "Great College to Work For" in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

NW Kan. students earn spots on McPherson College honor roll

John Dewey once said that “democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife.” Fort Hays State University embraces this sentiment through its long-standing commitment to civic engagement in our local community, region, state – and even across the globe.&nbsp;

In fact, I will be bold and claim bragging rights on this – thanks to the fortitude of many too numerous to mention. This commitment shows up in an abundance of ways.

Accounting students offer free income tax preparation. Students studying communication sciences and disorders offer free hearing screening clinics. Leadership 310 students design local community projects of their choice in conjunction with an existing organization. Course activities include recognizing a community problem, working with other concerned citizens to develop a plan of action and implementing that plan. One such project is our beautiful downtown pavilion.

Our Senior Companion Program connects volunteers of the same age with adults needing support to remain independent. These few examples do not even scratch the surface of our commitment to doing good and serving others.As I reflect upon how proud I am of the deep impact made by our students, faculty, staff and alumni, I think of one service project in particular that warms my heart every December. Teaming Up for Tots (TUFT) is the yearly construction and assembly project of wooden toys that are given to local children who otherwise might not receive a Christmas gift.<figure>

 </figure>Dr. Duane Renfrow, associate professor of applied technology, explained to me how this all got started.“Making Christmas toys for the TUFT organization was the brainchild of former Applied Technology chair, Dr. Fred Ruda, in 1990. For the past 31 years, in partnership with the Ellis County community, the Department of Applied Technology has designed and built up to 250 wooden toys each year. These toys are given to local children – through TUFT,” Renfrow said. “A variety of toys have been built through the years, including: jeeps, bug boxes, helicopters, cameras, excavators, pickups, fire trucks, piggy banks, race cars and dump trucks, to name a few. With the untimely passing of Dr. Ruda in 2012, the department decided to name the activity in his honor and call it the Dr. Fred P. Ruda TUFT Day.”From 1990 through 1997, Ruda was in charge of organizing this event with the help of the department’s Technology Education Collegiate Association (TECA) members. In 1998, Renfrow was tasked with this activity and has been responsible for the development of 18 of the 31 toys.After taking over the event, Renfrow procured the opportunity to engage students in the fundamentals of TUFT. Weeks – and even months – before the public assembly day, Renfrow formulates the parameters of the toy to be built. Students from Renfrow’s Materials, Processes and Production class research toy designs and bring their ideas to class for a brainstorming session. Several designs are chosen, and prototypes are made. Once the toy design is decided upon, the manufacturing process is developed, jigs and fixtures are built, and materials are pre-processed.&nbsp;On assembly day, the university and community are invited to come help. In the early years in Davis Hall, there were typically about 30 people involved on assembly day. Since the department moved to the Center for Applied Technology, 125 to 130 people have attended. The variety of people who show up to help include alumni of the department, university staff and faculty and community folks ranging in age from 5-year-old youngsters to men in their 80s – and all age groups in between. Eighty-three-year-old Don Barton, a retired FHSU employee, has only missed one year of toy building. That’s 30 years of dedication to Teaming Up For Tots!Jobs on the assembly day include sanding, gluing, running parts from station to station, attaching wheels, assembling parts and finishing. Some who have experience even get to operate some of the machines.This activity is much bigger than just making toys. In addition to demonstrating support for local children, this activity unites the community, as businesses and individuals make donations and volunteer time to make a difference in the lives of others.Unfortunately, with our current health concerns looming because of the pandemic, this year prevented the “open-to-the-public event.” But have no fear, like many other FHSU activities, the event, though reimagined, still resulted in 150 little pickup trucks for the TUFT organization!Thank you, Applied Technology faculty and students for bringing joy to little children on Christmas morning – and for setting another example of how Fort Hays State University consistently demonstrates the inspiring ways we enrich our communities.
