After 13 years at its location at Vine and Eighth streets in Hays, Sore Loser Tattoo &amp; Body Piercing will be moving to the Bricks.

"I have been looking for properties — at properties — for a few years in different areas of Hays,"&nbsp;owner Chris Norris said, "but I always thought that downtown would be really nice to go to. I just really like the feel of downtown and just everything about it."&nbsp;

&nbsp;Norris, 46, has purchased the former Bluetique building at 1008 Main.

He said one of the advantages of a downtown location is foot traffic.

"I think what we will lose in a high-traffic area, we will gain in foot traffic," he said.&nbsp;

Norris said the building is requiring extensive remodeling, including work on the plumbing and ripping out the carpet. Regulations require non-porous flooring in tattoo establishments.

Norris said he plans to have piercing on the ground level and the tattoo parlor on the second level.

The new building will give the business more square footage. The business's current building is about 1,800 square feet. The Main Street building has about 1,500 square feet per floor over two floors.

"We are just going to divide up the space and make it a little more habitable," he said.

On the ground floor, the piercing stations will be set up in individual rooms. On the second floor, the tattoo artists have opted for a more open layout pit style.

However, if someone requests more privacy, there will be moveable screens available.

Norris hopes to use the space to expand his jewelry offerings as well as add another tattoo artist.

Two of his current artists are Fort Hays State University graduates from the art program.

The business handles jewelry for ears, lips and noses as well as navel curves.&nbsp;

Norris does piercings, and business has one other piercer on staff.

"We are very light hearted," he said. "It is not a serious work environment. That is what I have always strived for — be clean, be friendly, be yourself."

The business also has permanent makeup artists who travels to the Hays every eight weeks.

Norris said he had some concern about making a business move during the economic uncertainty of the pandemic. The business had to close for seven weeks this spring because of the COVID shutdown.

However, he said business rebounded well after the reopening and has been steady the rest of the year. Although tattooing is not recession-proof, he said it tends to be more stable than other services or retail.

Because of the remodeling that is being required in the building on Main, the business will likely not open in its new location until after the first of the year.&nbsp; Norris said he was planning on a soft opening by March or April.

He said the business will be launching some other changes, but he is not ready to announce those at this time.

Sore Loser Tattoo moving to downtown Hays location

Students at Roosevelt Elementary School held homemade signs and waved flags as local veterans rolled by slowly honking car honors and waving back Friday during a veterans parade.

The school usually has a dinner to honor veterans on Veterans Day. Veterans who are relatives of the children eat with the kids, and the students perform a patriotic program to entertain the vets.

However, because of concerns about COVID-19, organizer Gay Flax, Roosevelt gym teacher, decided to stage an outdoor parade instead.

Ray Palmer, director of the Hays American Legion Riders, was on hand with five other Riders to lead the parade.

Palmer served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 2012. He served in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. During his military carer, he worked as a bridge crewman, truck driver and mechanic.

"The way I look at it is us veterans went and served our country so children and the people nowadays can have that right to get out here and honor us," he said. ...

"I am proud they can still do that and be a free country because of the sacrifice of the veterans and the people who did not come back from war have given."

The event was scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved to Friday because of rain in the forecast for next week.

🎥 Roosevelt students honor veterans with parade

TOPEKA –&nbsp; The Tower Mental Health Foundation has awarded a total of $39,000 in grants to 26 community mental health centers to assist with providing services across Kansas.

In lieu of the Foundation’s usual grant application process, the board approved $1,500&nbsp;cash awards to help offset some of the extra expenses incurred by the community mental health centers because of the pandemic.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Tower Mental Health Foundation of Kansas was created as a result of an agreement between the attorney general’s office and the Menninger Foundation in 2007. It offers support to organizations that provide mental health services in Kansas.

 The attorney general is the sole member of the Foundation, which is staffed by the office of the attorney general. The Foundation’s board of directors is composed of nine Kansans with a keen interest in mental health issues. Dr. Walter Menninger serves as an emeritus member of the board.

TOPEKA— The Kansas Historical Foundation and the Kansas Historical Society announced Friday at the 145th annual meeting that several major gifts have been received during the last few months toward the ongoing capital campaign. With these new gifts, the Kansas Historical Foundation’s Honor&nbsp;·&nbsp;Educate&nbsp;·&nbsp;Inspire Capital Campaign to raise $7 million reaches 85 percent completion.

The Sunderland Foundation is providing an additional $450,000 for renovations.&nbsp;The Sunderland family’s roots extend far into Kansas history. Lester T. Sunderland joined Ash Grove White Lime Association in in 1909 shortly after the company completed construction of its first cement plant in Chanute, Kansas. The Ash Grove Cement Company materials were used to construct highways, bridges, commercial and industrial complexes, and single- and multi-family homes. Through four generations of the Sunderland family, between 1909 and 2018, the company grew to become the fifth largest manufacturer of Portland cement in the United States, the sixth largest in North America. Lester T Sunderland created the family foundation in 1945. The Sunderland Foundation is based in Overland Park.

The&nbsp;<a>Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BSNF) Railway Foundation has pledged $250,000</a>. The foundation supports and improves the general welfare and quality of life in the communities served by BNSF Railway,&nbsp;<a>which operates in 28 states and three Canadian provinces</a>.

This generous gift underscores Kansas’ important role in the company’s history. Santa Fe Railway, under the leadership of Cyrus K. Holliday, was chartered by the territorial legislature in 1859. The Kansas Museum of History proudly displays the Cyrus K. Holliday 1880s steam locomotive in its gallery, the oldest surviving locomotive from the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.

The campaign received an&nbsp;<a>anonymous donation of $150,000. </a>

<a>Mary Vanier and Dr. Marty Vanier, both of Manhattan, have each pledged $125,000 over two years&nbsp;</a>for a total of $250,000. For generations, the Vanier family has been committed to supporting the broader Kansas community.

&nbsp;<a>Former Governor Bill Graves and Linda Graves have donated an additional $25,000</a>.

&nbsp;<a>Dr. Mary Davidson Cohen, of Johnson County,&nbsp;</a>finished her pledge of $150,000 and gave an additional $50,000&nbsp;to bring&nbsp;<a>the Bart and Mary Cohen Charitable Trust&nbsp;</a>gift to $200,000.&nbsp;The Trust’s generous philanthropy has long supported arts and education in the region.

These generous donations move the campaign’s completion from 67 percent, as of last year’s annual meeting, to 85 percent. They are also accompanied by several smaller gifts in recent months. Previous&nbsp;major gifts include $1 million from the Sunderland Foundation; $250,000 from the Lewis H. Humphreys Charitable Trust; and $1 million from the Hansen Foundation of Logan.

The Kansas Museum of History’s new exhibits will honor those who have come before us. They will tell the stories of Kansas in a way that resonates in the 21st century. 

The new exhibits are projected to open in 2023. 

Since the Museum’s opening in 1984 nearly 2 million people have visited. During most years, the Historical Society serves more than 20 million people onsite and online through its award-winning programs that also include historic preservation, tax credits, archeology, state historic sites, and archives.

As part of the virtual annual meeting, Historical Foundation officers and board members were elected. 

Officers of the Foundation for 2020-2021 are&nbsp;Lidia Hook Gray, Liberal, president; W. Walt Menninger, Topeka, president elect; Richard Walker, Newton, vice president; Rita L. Noll, Council Grove, secretary; and Carol Bales, Logan, past president. Jon Boursaw, Topeka, continues to serve a two-year term as treasurer.

Elected to executive committee vacancies for a one-year term are Crystal Ecton, Gridley; and Paul Stuewe, Lawrence. Elected to three-year terms are Ted Ayres, Wichita; Linda Jeffrey, Topeka; and Herschel Stroud, Topeka. 

Retiring from the executive committee are Don Chubb, Topeka; and Jack Alexander, Topeka.

Hays, Goodland residents elected to Kansas Historical Foundation board

ELLIS — Residents in Ellis may influence how food is grown in space thanks to a cooperative research project between NASA and the Ellis Public Library.

Steve Arthur, Ellis Public Library director, is coordinating local citizen scientists who will be growing New Mexican chimayo chili peppers.

NASA space crops systems scientist Jacob Torres is looking at the most efficient way to grow the peppers. The peppers that are being grown in the lab are not hot and don't have a lot of flavor, Arthur said.

The scientists are looking for citizen scientists who grow better tasting peppers with good capsaicin levels, which is the hotness of the pepper.

The growing techniques with the best results will be replicated on a mission to the International Space Station, which is set for launch in March.

Arthur, who has been a longtime promoter of STEM education as well as a space enthusiast, said as humans look toward longer missions in space, including bases on the moon and missions to Mars, scientist are trying to solve nutrition problems.

Although current astronauts take all the food and water they need with them, the cost of packing all your food for long-term missions may be prohibitive, Arthur said.

"Shipping that stuff to a location costs anywhere between $15,000 and $50,000 per kilogram," Arthur said. "If you are on a flight to Mars, which is a six-month flight, you are going to be eating dehydrated food for six months. Wouldn't it be better if you could have fresh produce that they could eat?"

Astronauts on prolonged missions to the ISS have struggled to maintain weight despite ample food being available. Scientists credit this to "menu boredom," as the astronauts eat the same meals over and over, Arthur explained.

NASA scientists hope the solution will be growing fresh produce in space. They are working with all sorts of plants, not just peppers, Arthur said.

Scientists have experimented with hydroponics as well as a pods system, which entails capturing and recycling nutrients in the irrigation process, Arthur said.

Individuals who have signed up for the program through the library will each receive six pepper seeds, soil, fertilizer, sulphur and tip sheet on growing peppers. Peppers like sulphur and also magnesium, which is readily available in epsom salt.

How the plants are grown is entirely up to the participants. The growing method is the variable in the experiment.

"I want people to use their imaginations," Arthur said. ...

"I encouraged them to do more research — to go out there on their own, see and come up with different ways. They don't have to replicate what I gave them, they can let their minds run and come up with ways to irrigate it, come up with ways to feed it."

Arthur is using an LED grow light for his plants plus a seedling heater. He is also considering using an&nbsp;arduino irrigation system, which is similar to what the lab at NASA is using.

The peppers do not like a lot of water, they need eight to 12 hours of grow light and the soil temperature needs to stay between 70 and 90 degrees.

Participants are required to document everything they do to the peppers, watering fertilizing, etc. They also must document growth patterns of the plant and the peppers, once they set on.

Fifteen individuals and five families have signed on to participate through the library. St. Mary's Catholic School and Ellis Girl Scout Troop 11261 are participating in the experiment as group projects. Arthur will also be growing his own seeds.&nbsp;

Arthur said he hopes families can have together time through this project.

"Anymore it seems like everyone is doing their own thing," he said. "I want this to be something that the whole family can do together and spend some time with each other, not constantly go, go go. They have this common project."

Arthur said he has some seeds left if people are still interested in participating, but you will need to let him know right away.

The pepper plants take 90 days to germinate, grow and bear fruit. Then the results still have to be sent to NASA&nbsp; by Feb. 16 for review before the March launch.

As far as he is aware, Arthur said Ellis is the only public library involved in the project.

Arthur said he hopes for the pepper experiment to be a community project.

"I want this so everyone can do at home, and they don't have to worry about COVID," Arthur said. "This can be their own thing."&nbsp;

He is asking participants to take pictures and share notes on their progress. That information will be shared with NASA as well as other participants and the community through the&nbsp; <a href="https://www.facebook.com/eplmaker">Ellis Library Makerspace</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ellispubliclibrary">Ellis Public Library Facebook </a>pages.

Arthur made his connections with the NASA scientists during the annual Space Exploration Educator's Conference in February at NASA in Houston.&nbsp;

"It was like heaven for me," Arthur said.

He said he was able to meet and network with other educators, as well as astronauts, astronomers, and NASA engineers and scientists.

He attended a program during which participants were able to meet an engineer behind the space suits' environmental functions. The participants were able to view a destructed suit and ask questions about how the suit works and is constructed.

"The best thing was there were no stupid question with him, and he would not give you this, 'Are you kidding me?' " Arthur said. "He would nicely explain how all this works, and he would prompt you to ask more questions. This guy was as happy as a clam that we were actually interested in the work he did."

During the conference, Arthur also was able to watch astronaut Christina Koch's return from the ISS in almost real time.

"They were showing us things they have planned for the next 20 or 30 years," he said.

Arthur plans to use ideas he gleaned in Houston to create programs for youth in Ellis as part of his Makey Makey Monday series.

The series had to be temporarily suspended&nbsp; in the spring because of the pandemic, but the library is offering programs again.

Arthur already had two classes dubbed "Edible Astronomy." Kids learned about the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, sun spots using sugar cookies and chocolate chips and volcanism and&nbsp;Mares, the ancient lunar “seas” on the moon, using Rice Krispies and chocolate syrup.

"Now these kids understand the solar winds are responsible for creating the auroras and they understand the Mares. They understand all of that stuff, and they got to eat," Arthur said.

The kids can sign up for a program on Nov. 30 titled "Edible Destruction." 

Kids will build edible structures and measure what level of earthquake their structures will withstand. Arthur has a shake table and app that will convert the forces into equivalent of a real earthquake.

"If their structure doesn't survive, they get to eat the wreckage," he said.

Arthur said STEM and STEAM education is about preparing kids for a future filled with technology-centered professions.&nbsp;

"The things that I am doing with kindergarteners now are going to be the standard when they graduate and look for careers," Arthur said.&nbsp;

The demand for workers in science-based professions is already outpacing the supply, he said.

"If I reach one kids or two kids in this town, then I have accomplished what I set out to do," he said.

Arthur will also be offering a rocket program starting in February. Youth will be building rockets designed to carry payloads. The goal will be able to successfully launch the rockets and retrieve the payloads. More details will announced at a later date.

 </figure><h2>Educating for the future</h2>Arthur said STEM and STEAM education is about preparing kids for a future filled with technology-centered professions.&nbsp;"The things that I am doing with kindergarteners now are going to be the standard when they graduate and look for careers," Arthur said.&nbsp;The demand for workers in science-based professions is already outpacing the supply, he said."If I reach one kids or two kids in this town, then I have accomplished what I set out to do," he said.Arthur will also be offering a rocket program starting in February. Youth will be building rockets designed to carry payloads. The goal will be able to successfully launch the rockets and retrieve the payloads. The Hays school board will hear updates on state accreditation requirements and the school redesign project at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Rockwell Administration Center.

USD 489 has chosen to focus on strengthening relationships with students and families and increasing student engagement academically and personally in its accreditation process.

Lincoln Elementary School in Hays is to be one of the schools that will be part of the&nbsp;Apollo II state school redesign project.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4e3a921f-1789-4853-8415-8ac8388e61ea">Hays USD 489 Superintendent Ron Wilson said when the project was announced the 2020-21 school year will be used for planning changes that will be most beneficial to serving students.</a>

The board will also will hear reports from O'Loughlin Elementary School and the USD 489 Health and Wellness Committee.

Hays CVB, DHDC recognized with tourism awards

Beginning Monday, Utility Solutions, a contractor hired by the city of Hays, will begin sanitary sewer repairs that will require Main Street to be shut down between 10th and 11th Street. 

A short section of the sanitary sewer main that runs down the center of Main Street at a depth of approximately 11 feet will need to be dug up and replaced.
