Three-day weather outlook

In the midst of the holiday season and the increased access to sweets, many people may be observing a less than ideal change in their personal body conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While people may strive for a skinnier physique, holding a thin body condition over the winter may create deficits for&nbsp;cattle&nbsp;heading into calving season.&nbsp;

“Thin cows have a higher maintenance requirement in the winter than cows in adequate condition because they have to work harder to stay warm,”&nbsp;

To assess the herd, veterinarian Bob Larson suggests ranchers periodically check them and even take pictures of the herd to help monitor changes over time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In any group, I expect some variation in the condition, but ideally I want almost all the cows to be in a moderate body condition,” Larson said. “And if they are, then I know that I am managing the group pretty well.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

If&nbsp;cattle&nbsp;ranchers notice that there are thin cows in the herd, they may need to evaluate the situation further to see if there is a pattern tied to their age or access to feed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The number of cows in the herd will creep up if, for example, they are getting pushed out of the feed bunk and not getting the protein supplementation they need,”. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Experts agree that two feet of bunk space per head is a minimum amount of space needed. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“If you only allocate a foot and a half on a single-sided feed bunk, the big cows will push out the thinner, smaller cows that really need the feed,” Weaber said. He prefers to place the feed bunk in the middle of the pasture so&nbsp;cattle&nbsp;can access the feed from both sides. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Big cubes fed on the ground will allow the&nbsp;cattle&nbsp;to have easy access because you can spread it out, but there is more feed waste and sanitation issues that come with that strategy,” veterinarian Brad White said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

White suggested producers look at ways to segregate the thin cows.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Grouping the thin cows together can be a powerful tool in giving them the extra feed they need ahead of calving season,”. The challenge, he added, may lie in where they are located and the ease of separating them for feeding. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He added: “The cow’s maintenance cost is the lowest it is going to be right now and that makes it a good time to put some weight on her rather than waiting to do it later.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

White gave an example: “If I have 100 days, I could target the cows to gain two pounds per day. That will give them about 200 pounds of gain.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

The bottom line, White said, is to “do the math for your herd and then figure out if it is just a couple individuals that need to gain weight or the entire group, because that answer will drastically change the decision you make and what options are available.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Winter conditions pose challenges for livestock

Due to the observance of the Christmas holiday on Thursday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 25, the city of Hays refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as follows.

Tuesday, Dec. 22, and Wednesday, Dec. 23, refuse/recycling collections will be on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Thursday, December 24 and Friday, Dec. 25 refuse/recycling collections will be on Wednesday, Dec. 23. 

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed by end of day on Wednesday. 

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclables will be encountered around the holidays. Please be sure to have your refuse/recycling out by 7 a.m. on the specified collection day and keep in mind the trucks have no set time schedule. 

City of Hays customers who have questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of Public Works at 785-628-7350.

Refuse and recycling changes during Christmas holiday

The Ellis County Health Department on Monday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days rose slightly from 12 on Friday to 13 in Monday.

There were 25 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Friday. There are currently 280 active cases, including 10 active hospitalizations of Ellis County residents, and 2,780 recovered cases.

As of Monday, there were 27 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, up from 25 on Friday, with 16 of those active patients and 11 in the recovery phase.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests rose slightly to 14.2 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,091 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 31 coronavirus-related deaths.

NOTE:&nbsp;"New cases" reflects cases reported by the Ellis County Health Department between regular reporting periods of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. "Total cases" reflects all cases reported by the department. Because of delayed test results, total cases might include cases prior to the previous reporting period, so the figures might not necessarily correspond.

Per-day virus rate in Ellis Co. rises; 25 new cases identified

Needy families can still get toys from United Way during distribution on Tuesday

Several charitable groups as well as the&nbsp; &nbsp;HaysWalmart are cooperating to make Ellis County families's Christmas a little brighter.

The local organization Can You See Me?, the Schmidt Foundation and the United Way of Ellis County cooperated for a Shop with a Cop event for needy families on Sunday and Monday. Walmart was also a partner in the program and gave a gift bag to all of the families.

Mylissa Molnar, 15, was one of the family members who participated in the Shop with the Cop program on Sunday.

She helped her mom and brother pick up hygiene products, food and clothes with a gift card provided by the program.

Demetrius Chance, one of the organizers of Shop with a Cop, said this frees up money in the families's budgets to buy gifts for their children.

"It's helping our family a lot,"&nbsp;Myliss said. "We don't have to worry as much about all of this other stuff we need to run the house so we can focus a little bit more on gift giving."

Both&nbsp;Mylissa and her brother were also able to pick out some clothes to take home, but Mylissa said her Christmas wish was not about presents.

"My overall wish every year is to have just a good Christmas in general," she said. "I don't look for a certain present. I am just thankful for what I get."

Andrew Sheely, FHSU police officer, was participating for the first time in the Shop with the Cop program.

"It just kind of gives a face behind the badge," Sheely said, who is in his second year as an FHSU officer. 

"It gives people an idea that we are not just here to do the things we do on a day-to-day basis, but we are here in the community, trying to have a good time and help people out as much as possible."

The United of Way of Ellis County also received 350 toys&nbsp;this Christmas from the Good360 and Toys for Tots with assistance from the United Way of the Plains, some of which went to the Shop with a Cop families.

<a href="https://good360.org/">Good360</a> accepts donations of products from retailers, including Walmart, and name brands, such as Nike, Mattel and Disney to be given to people who are victims of natural disasters or&nbsp; have challenging life circumstances.&nbsp;

14,448 toys were distributed this year in the state of Kansas through the Good360 and Toys for Tots partnership.

The gifts in Ellis County were distributed to United Way partner agencies to be given to families in need. Toys were destined for KVC Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Salvation Army's Angel Tree project.

Erica Berges, United Way director, was still trying to place other toys within the United Way partner agencies on Thursday. The remainder of Good360 toys will distributed to those in need from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22 in the first floor conference room in the Hadley Center. People can contact the United Way at&nbsp;785-628-8281 for more information. 

"One nice thing about the community is there are so many places like Angel Tree," Berges said, "but there are still those families who either miss out on the deadline or I know I had someone call who just had something come up in the last week and 'All of the sudden I can't afford toys for my kids.'"

The last several years some families have been able to find toys for their children through the Pay It Forward Store, which has accepted new or gently used toys to be given away at Christmas.

Heather Gray, store founder, was unable to find a location for the store in Hays this year. The store was open one day only on Dec. 19 in LaCrosse. Some families expressed on the store's Facebook page that they needed gifts, but were unable to travel to LaCrosse.

Berges said the pandemic has caused difficult economic times for many local residents, making Christmas a greater financial burden.

"We are just glad we can bring [the gifts] to Ellis County," Berges said. "We want to help as many families and kids as we can with it."

Charities come together to give families Merry Christmas

SALINA — Six volunteers from the Central and Western Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross, including a Hays resident, have been honored for their service this year to the world’s best-known humanitarian organization and the communities it serves.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. 

More than 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce is volunteers, numbering nearly 372,000 in FY 2019.&nbsp; There are 1,599 volunteers serving the Kansas – Oklahoma Region of the Red Cross. The Central and Western Kansas chapter is one of seven chapters that comprise the two-state area and has 67 active volunteers.

“In times of need, the public often relies upon the Red Cross,” said Hays resident Sherry Dryden, regional Red Cross CEO. “In turn, the Red Cross relies upon its volunteers. I am deeply grateful and heartened by their commitment to this organization and their communities.”

Two volunteers are recognized with the Exceptional Volunteer Service Award for demonstrating their passion for service to fulfill the Red Cross’s humanitarian mission. 

The recipients for the Central and Western Kansas chapter are:&nbsp;

Pete Peterson&nbsp;resides in Hays and is the Disaster Action Team Leader for the chapter. His colleagues say he always makes sure everything is ready to go and where it needs to be. They say he is one of the jolliest people and it rubs off on those around him in such a positive way.

From Great Bend, Paula Hertel is described as extraordinary, compassionate and dedicated by fellow volunteers. To say Hertel is helpful is an extreme understatement. For demonstrating exceptional service in several leadership positions over a period of years, Corey Becker is the recipient of the Chairman’s Volunteer Service Award. Becker, a resident of Garden City, has a passionate focus on the Red Cross mission. His dedication and determination make the foundation for sustainability of the chapter. He is being honored for the mentoring and support that he gives to all, as well as for his passion, dedication and determination.

Eric Kohn has been awarded the Rookie of the Year Award, which goes to an individual who has showed an extraordinary commitment to the Red Cross during their first year of service. Kohn resides in Salina. His fellow volunteers recognize him as dependable, eager and optimistic. They say Kohn is levelheaded, cool and calm, and yet with an optimistic spirit and “go-getter” attitude.

Rosie Meier also has been awarded the Rookie of the Year Award. A resident of Great Bend, she is being recognized as always being efficient and professional in her Red Cross volunteer work. Many describe her as kind, efficient, and thorough. She has a special grace about her that gives an aura of comfort in all she does.

The Most Volunteer Hours Award for the Central and Western Kansas chapter has been awarded to Dwight Jantz of Newton. He logged 1,145 hours during the past fiscal year. Jantz has supported the Red Cross Blood Services mission for many decades. He is also a blood donor who has given more than 550 units of blood and platelets. Jantz said he respects the blood collections team and enjoys supporting the overall Red Cross Blood Services mission. He added that, as a retiree, he can’t think of anything better he can do with his time. It has been said of Jantz that there isn’t a place in the state he won’t go to ensure the lifesaving blood is transported where it is needed, when it is needed.

“I am very proud of these volunteers and appreciate the time and effort they have given to the Red Cross,” said Alice Townsend, regional chief executive officer.&nbsp;"Because of their commitment, the Red Cross has been able to fulfill its mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.”

ARCSALINA — Six volunteers from the Central and Western Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross, including a Hays resident, have been honored for their service this year to the world’s best-known humanitarian organization and the communities it serves.The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. More than 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce is volunteers, numbering nearly 372,000 in FY 2019.&nbsp; There are 1,599 volunteers serving the Kansas – Oklahoma Region of the Red Cross. The Central and Western Kansas chapter is one of seven chapters that comprise the two-state area and has 67 active volunteers.<figure>

Allan J. Weber was born July 22, 1957 to Aloysius Phillip and Annuniciata Marie (Wildeman) Weber and was raised on the family farm 2 miles north of Park, KS. Allan attended grade school in Park and high school at Wheatland High School graduating in 1976, even though many never thought he would. After high school, Allan worked several local jobs including owning and managing the grocery store in Park.&nbsp;

August 19, 1978, Allan married his high school sweetheart Connie Jean (Gillespie) Weber, to this union 3 children were born, Andrea, Brandon and Cory. In May of 1984 Allan moved his family to Dalhart, TX where he worked for a fertilizer and fuel company. Later he worked for and was then promoted to manager at Dalhart Coca Cola. Allan joined Dalhart E.M.S. as an E.M.T., and later went on to become a paramedic. In 1994 he moved his family to Hays, where he worked in sales and in 1995, they moved to Quinter. In 1996 Allan ran and was elected as Gove County Sheriff. Throughout his career he served on the KSA (Kansas Sheriff’s Association) Board, in 2018 he was elected president and served for 2 consecutive years. Allan was also on the KSA scholarship board where he found great pleasure in meeting and interviewing students seeking scholarships to further their education. In the fall of 2006, after the fatal shooting of neighboring sheriff and friend James "Jimmy" Johnson, Allan served as Sheridan County Sheriff until a new sheriff could be appointed by the Governor.&nbsp; He was proud that he was considered to provide service and protection to the Sheridan county residents. In the history of Kansas, a person has never been allowed to serve as Sheriff in 2 counties at the same time. Allan had a real desire to provide service and protection to the communities that he was part of. Allan and Connie also had a small farm, they enjoyed farming and working the calves together. He always said that farming was a struggle, but the tax deductions were great. Allan was the Sheriff of Gove County for 24 years when died in the line of duty on December 18, 2020, at Denver Health Medical Center. &nbsp;

Allan loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.&nbsp; He also enjoyed watching his favorite football team, the Kansas City Chiefs (GO CHIEFS!), except when he boycotted NFL football during the National Anthem controversy.&nbsp;

Allan is survived by wife Connie of the home; daughter Andrea Dinkel and husband Todd of Hays; sons Brandon Weber and wife Abby of Quinter, Cory Weber and wife Bre of Hays, and son by proxy Bruce McGee of Denver, CO; 8 grandchildren Brooklynn and Preston Dinkel of Hays, Rylan, Paxton and Rowan Weber of Hays, and Areya, Amery and Brogan Weber of Quinter; siblings Qwen Offut and husband Kevin (Moe) of Healy, Dan Weber and wife Vickie of Park, Marita (Marty) Cressler and husband Herb of Hoxie, Stacey Wagoner and husband Jerry of Haxton, CO, Fr. Kevin Weber of Salina, Alanna Weber and wife Laura of Topeka; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 23, 2020, from 5:00 –7:00 PM at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, KS. Because of COVID restrictions a set number of people will be allowed in the funeral home at a time, and masks will be required.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, December 24, 2020, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.&nbsp; The family is requiring that masks be worn to attend the funeral.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Grainfield Township Cemetery in Grainfield, KS.

Sulfur (S) deficiency in wheat has become more common in Kansas, particularly in no-till wheat. The reasons for this is a reduction in sulfur being emitted to the atmosphere and cooler soil temperatures because of no-till, which slows S mineralization in the soil. Some crops in the rotation, such as soybean, can take up significant amounts of S.&nbsp;

In wheat plants S-deficiency is yellow and stunted and is observed in patches in the field, especially in areas where there has been previous soil erosion or soil movement. The patchy S-deficient areas of the field are often found on hilltops or side slopes where erosion has occurred and soil organic matter is reduced, or where leaching is more pronounced. Wheat in areas where topsoil was removed or significant cuts were made (i.e. terraced or leveled fields).&nbsp;

Sulfur deficiency in growing crops is often mistaken for nitrogen (N) deficiency. However, unlike N deficiency, older leaves show firing and yellowing, with S deficiency, the pale yellow symptoms appear first on the younger/uppermost leaves. Plants with S deficiency eventually become uniformly chlorotic (yellow leaves).

Sulfur deficiencies have been showing up early in the spring, shortly after green-up, before organic S is mineralized from soil organic matter, and before wheat roots can grow into the subsoil to utilize any available S (sulfate) accumulations. Deficiencies of S are often difficult to identify because the chlorosis is not always obvious. Crops lacking S also may be stunted, thin-stemmed, and spindly. In the case of wheat, maturity is delayed. Winter annual weed competition is also enhanced due to the slower growth and lack of tillering.

Sulfate is relatively soluble, it tends to leach down into the subsoil. In many Kansas soils, it will accumulate in the B horizon (subsoil) in two forms. Clay surfaces and coatings will retain some sulfate, and sulfate will also be present in the subsoil as gypsum (calcium sulfate).

A soil test for available sulfate-S in the soil profile is available. For proper interpretation of this test, soil organic matter, soil texture, the crop to be grown, and the expected yield level all need to be considered. Accurate estimates of S needs cannot be made from a surface sample alone. Since sulfate is mobile, a 24-inch sampling depth is needed. However, due to the relatively high demand for S during the rapid vegetative growth phase of wheat, and relatively shallow rooting by the wheat crop at this time, the S measured in the deeper, subsoil levels by the test may not be available to wheat in the early spring, especially where soils are cold.

There are many S-containing fertilizer materials. Several dry materials are available that can be blended with other fertilizers for winter/spring topdressing. However, some of these products are best used in pre-plant applications because they are slow in becoming plant available in the spring for topdressing. Clay surfaces and coatings will retain some sulfate, and sulfate will also be present in the subsoil as gypsum (calcium sulfate).A soil test for available sulfate-S in the soil profile is available. For proper interpretation of this test, soil organic matter, soil texture, the crop to be grown, and the expected yield level all need to be considered. Accurate estimates of S needs cannot be made from a surface sample alone. Since sulfate is mobile, a 24-inch sampling depth is needed. However, due to the relatively high demand for S during the rapid vegetative growth phase of wheat, and relatively shallow rooting by the wheat crop at this time, the S measured in the deeper, subsoil levels by the test may not be available to wheat in the early spring, especially where soils are cold.There are many S-containing fertilizer materials. Several dry materials are available that can be blended with other fertilizers for winter/spring topdressing. However, some of these products are best used in pre-plant applications because they are slow in becoming plant available in the spring for topdressing. OSBORNE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Sunday in Osborne County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by&nbsp; Christopher Hollis Ayers, 29, Osborne, was northbound on U.S. 281 nine miles south of U.S. 24. 

The SUV left the roadway into the east ditch. The driver overcorrected and the SUV returned to the road, crossed the center line and left the roadway into the west ditch.

The driver overcorrected, entered the roadway again and the SUV rolled multiple times into the east ditch where the driver was ejected.

&nbsp;Ayers was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Clark-Gashaw Mortuary. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Competition cheer is not about pom-poms and spirit chants.

The girls and boys in Intensity Elite Cheer in Hays are honing their skills to become elite athletes who compete five times a year across the Midwest in ESPN-style competitions with hundreds of other participants.

Intensity Elite Cheer recently remodeled and rented the former Rue21 space at Big Creek Crossing.

Most of the 18 team members have been together for three years. Intensity Elite has both junior and senior teams this year. Youth on the team are ages 5 to 19. The gym also offers tumbling classes.

Amanda McCall and Keeli Starks have coached together for three years, but branched out on their own to form Intensity Elite this year.

For those who have not seen competitive cheer, it's not like what many have seen at their local football games. Teams train for 2-minute-30-second routines with tumbling, dance and stunts set to music.

Hours of practice go into the brief competition time on the mat in front of judges.

This is 15-year-old Kenzie Wilhelm's first year on a competitive cheer team. She is also a cheerleader at Russell High School, but was encouraged by friends to join Intensity Elite.

"I like that it is more of performance," she said. "It is a lot of hard work to do. You really grow with teammates on a different level than other sports do."

One of the the reason for the tight bonds is the need for trust.&nbsp;Wilhelm is a flyer, which means she is the team member in the stunt group who is thrown in the air.&nbsp;

"Obviously, in stunting, you are bound together whether you are a base or flyer to do what you are supposed to do," she said. "You have to put your trust in them. It is important to have a bond with them to do so."

Wilhelm said the stunts were scary at first.

"You have to tie that back and push that away so the stunt can hit," she said.

Despite being a competitive sport, Wilhelm said other teams watch their peers compete and are supportive during performances.

Abby Filak, 12, is on both the junior and senior teams. This is her third year in competitive cheer and she said she enjoys meeting people at competitions.

"I just like spending time with my teammates and learning all the new routines," she said.

Both levels competed at the Rockstar Championships in November in Kansas City with the juniors winning a Regional Championship and the senior team winning Regional and Level championships.

McCall said in addition to developing physically, the athletes learn teamwork, confidence and how to work with a coach.

"[It teaches them] how to win wonderfully and lose gracefully," McCall said.

COVID has made practice and competition more difficult. The youth space out during warm ups, but when the teams practice stunts, the kids have to be in close proximity to each other.

During their competition in November, the senior squad had to wear masks during their routine.

"As you can imagine, that is a lot of running and jumping and tumbling, so there is a lot of safety factors involved if you have to wear a mask," McCall said. "One of our kids, her mask came down while she was tumbling. That could have got caught on an arm."

The kids are also used to competing in front of thousands of people in event centers, but attendance has been restricted because of the pandemic.

The team was formally training at Premier Indoor Training. McCall said she hopes the foot traffic at the mall will help make the gym more visible and promote the team.

"People will stop and look and watch the kids and we've put up flyers," McCall said. "I think it will be good for us and the mall too because most of these kids are from out of town. That will bring in Hays dollars too."

The gym will have open gyms from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 23 and 30. You must reserve a spot at intensityelitehays@gmail.com.

The gym also will be offering Fundamentals of Cheer for youth 5 to 10 who do not want to compete in a full cheer season. The sessions will be once a week from Jan. 17 thought April 22. U.S. Drought Monitor: Ellis County remains in moderate drought

Fort Hays State University’s Dr. Hendratta Ali continues to make her mark in the professional geosciences community. This semester, she received some of the highest honors from not just one, but two, professional organizations for creating and leading the “Call for a Robust Anti-Racism Plan for the Geosciences” petition drive.

Earlier this month, Ali – an associate professor of geosciences, was awarded the Presidential Citation for Science and Society from the American Geophysical Union (AGU). In October, she received the 2020 President’s Award for Professional Excellence from the Association for Women Geoscientists.

This past summer, Ali organized and led a team of 19 scientists to create a plan that calls for a more diverse and inclusive geoscience community. Geoscience is one of the least diverse STEM disciplines in the United States and other industrialized counties.

Ali’s action plan centers on engaging in meaningful anti-racism, demanding all geoscience societies and organizations take concrete action against racism and all forms of discrimination. The plan secured more than 26,000 signatures, and it is being used to create long-overdue change in field of geosciences around the world. Rush Holt from New Jersey and five senators: Gary Peters, Michigan; Cory Gardner, Colorado; Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island; Barbara Mikulski, Maryland; and Olympia Snowe, Maine.

The Association for Women Geoscientists promotes the three E’s – encourage, enhance and exchange – and Ali was recognized as an inspiring mentor and educator, and an excellent leader and role model members of the professional geosciences community.

A native of Cameroon, Ali is in her 10th year at Fort Hays State after earning her Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. She was surprised, and honored to learn she had been honored these two awards.

“It is a great honor to be acknowledged and recognized by our peers for working for the betterment of our society,” Ali said. “It’s a validation that the work that I do is making a difference.”

FHSU’s Ali recognized for global leadership in geosciences

There are two legendary football coaches who are retired and living in Manhattan, Kansas. One is Bill Snyder, a multiple-time national coach of the year and a member of the National College Football Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

The other is a legendary high school football coach who led his team to the longest winning streak in the nation while coaching in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Roger Barta is the retired high school football coach who set these records in Smith Center, Kansas. His accomplishments were so noteworthy that an East Coast writer spent a year in Kansas to write about them. In 2010, the book chronicling these achievements was published.&nbsp;

Roger Barta and his wife Pam grew up in the rural community of Plainville, population 1,903 people. Now, that’s rural. In high school, Roger played quarterback but couldn’t continue football due to injury. After graduating from Fort Hays State and earning a master’s in Georgia, he embarked on a high school teaching and coaching career. In 1978, he took his first and only head coaching job in Smith Center.&nbsp;

That was the beginning of a phenomenal career. Roger Barta built a coaching staff and a power football system which would develop into a juggernaut, with tremendous community support.&nbsp;

His won-loss record was excellent, and then came the streak of consecutive winning games. One win turned into two, and then five and 10 and more. A state championship was achieved, and then another and another.&nbsp;

One day in 2007, the Smith Center Redmen played Plainville and got on a roll. A series of Plainville turnovers and Smith Center offensive strikes snowballed into a rout. In a set of circumstances that Coach Barta regrets today, the Redmen scored 72 points – in the first quarter. This broke a national record set back in 1925 and propelled Smith Center into the national spotlight.&nbsp;

One of the national sportswriters who followed this story was a New York Times reporter named Joe Drape. He visited Smith Center to report on it and found himself intrigued with this remarkable coach and community.&nbsp;

Joe returned to New York, but something about the community stayed with him. He thought about Coach Barta and the lives the coach had touched. He thought about the winning streak and the challenges of the upcoming season, after a highly touted senior class graduated.&nbsp;

Joe had the unlikely idea to move his wife and young son from New York to Kansas for a year to follow the football season. He did so and chronicled the remarkable season that followed.&nbsp;

Coach Barta shaped this group of unheralded underclassmen into a powerful team once again. After some early-season close calls, the team came together and finished undefeated with Smith Center’s fifth consecutive state championship. Eventually, the winning streak would extend to 79 games – the longest high school victory streak in the nation.&nbsp;

The best-selling book is titled “Our Boys - A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen.”&nbsp;

“Our Boys” is about rural life as well as football. In the end, the book is about Coach Barta and the values he instills. Coach Barta teaches the simple values of hard work, dedication and love. “We talk about getting a little better each day,” he said, “about being the best we can be, about being a team.” He tells his players, “We need to respect each other, and then like each other, and then love each other. And when we have chemistry, that’s when together we are champions.”&nbsp;

Coach Barta said, “None of this is about football. What I hope we’re doing is sending kids into life who know that every day means something.” After retiring, Coach Barta and Pam retired to Manhattan.&nbsp;

Hard work, high values, and getting better every day. That sounds like another legendary coach who is retired and living in Manhattan. We commend Bill Snyder and Roger Barta for making a difference in their community and in the lives of so many young people.&nbsp;

One is Bill Snyder, a multiple-time national coach of the year and a member of the National College Football Hall of Fame.&nbsp;The other is a legendary high school football coach who led his team to the longest winning streak in the nation while coaching in rural Kansas.&nbsp;Roger Barta is the retired high school football coach who set these records in Smith Center, Kansas. His accomplishments were so noteworthy that an East Coast writer spent a year in Kansas to write about them. In 2010, the book chronicling these achievements was published.&nbsp;Roger Barta and his wife Pam grew up in the rural community of Plainville, population 1,903 people. Now, that’s rural. In high school, Roger played quarterback but couldn’t continue football due to injury. After graduating from Fort Hays State and earning a master’s in Georgia, he embarked on a high school teaching and coaching career. In 1978, he took his first and only head coaching job in Smith Center.&nbsp;That was the beginning of a phenomenal career. Roger Barta built a coaching staff and a power football system which would develop into a juggernaut, with tremendous community support.&nbsp;His won-loss record was excellent, and then came the streak of consecutive winning games.
