On Wednesdays at Wilson Elementary School, students don't dread being called to the office.

They know they may be a part of WOW Wednesdays, a positive office referral program at the school.

WOW stands for Way of the Warrior, a reference to the Wilson mascot. The students learn the Way of the Warrior is to be kind, in control respectful and responsible.

The students are recommended for a positive calls home by their teachers, and on Wednesdays lucky students' names are pulled out of a fish bowl.

The principal makes positive calls home, and the students get to take home T-shirts donated by Fort Hays State University.

Janelle&nbsp;VanKooten's son, Paxon, was part of the WOW Wednesday program last year when he was a fifth grader at Wilson.&nbsp;

"It is always a little unnerving to get a phone call from the principal if you are not sure why they are calling," Janelle said.&nbsp;

"I think it is a great opportunity to open up the conversation with your kids and talk about positive things that happen during their day at school when you wouldn't otherwise know some of those things that happen," she said.

Paxon's mother said Paxon didn't say much about his call to the office, but Janelle said his smile said it all.&nbsp;

"Anytime a kid can be recognized for positive behavior, it benefits the kid recognized and the other students seeing you can be recognized for positive behavior..." Janelle said.

The WOW Wednesday, combined with multiple other strategies, have helped Wilson to dramatically reduce the number of disciplinary office referrals.

In 2018-19, Wilson had 265 disciplinary office referrals. In 2019-20, up to the COVID shutdown, the school had 88 disciplinary office referrals — a 66-percent reduction. To date this school year, the school has had only 50 disciplinary office referrals, which is an additional 34-percent reduction.

"That is the direct result of a whole lot of hard work on our teachers' part and a willingness to build relationships with students and preserve relationships with students," Principal Anita Scheve recently told the USD 489 school board. "[We want] to help them figure out what is going on and make it better and to treat behavior as something we can teach just like academics."

Positivity and social and emotional growth is not just a focus of WOW Wednesdays. It has been a core focus of the school. The school, as do all the schools in the district use the CHAMPS model, which seeks to create clear behavior expectations.

The school has tried to incorporate trauma-informed practices for the students. Scheve said this has included a Mindful Monday, which helps students learn to positively deal with stress.

Scheve said she thought the school is reaping the benefits of social/emotional practices that were implemented several years ago.

The school now has students who have been exposed to positive behavior reinforcement and trauma-informed practices their entire elementary school experience, she said.

Wilson Elementary sees dramatic drop in discipline referrals

NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation awarded&nbsp;$2,500 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the March grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following project:

Norton was one of six communities selected to host this traveling Smithsonian exhibit, which is designed to spark fresh thinking and new conversations about the future and sustainability of Kansas communities. The exhibit will run for six weeks from May 1st&nbsp;– June 12th. The Norton County Arts Council (NCAC) has been planning and organizing programming for the exhibit along with a complimentary local exhibit, which will run during the same timeframe.&nbsp;

“The Crossroads exhibit will create space for our community to explore and exercise telling our history while planning for our future,” said Caryl Hale with NCAC. “Our hope is that this will help foster our community’s sense of shared identity and cultivate new ideas on how to adapt to the changes in the economy that no doubt have a large effect on our small community.”

The grants funds will help with the coordination and presentation of this exhibit and future events. “We’re so excited that Norton was selected to host the Crossroads exhibit,” said Tara Vance,&nbsp;NCCF Executive Director. “The grant committee was eager to award this request and help support the Arts Council in bringing cultural events to Norton County.”

Norton Co. foundation announces March grant cycle recipients

Troy L. Waymaster, R-Bunker Hill, is the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li_2020/s/pdf/district_maps/district_map_h_109.pdf">109th Kansas House District</a>&nbsp;state representative and chairman of the Appropriations Committee.&nbsp;

The 109th District includes&nbsp;Osborne, Russell, and Smith counties, and portions of Barton, Jewell, Lincoln and Rush counties.&nbsp;

WAYMASTER: From the Dome to Home, March 19

Fort Hays State University’s Leslie Paige has won the Presidential Award from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for the fourth time.

Paige, director of the Office of Scholarships and Sponsored Projects at FHSU, was honored at last month’s NASP annual convention for her exceptional service in the field of school psychology. The immediate past president of the professional organization, Paige has been an active member since 1979. She also won Presidential Awards in 2001, 2007, and 2017.

This year’s convention was held online, and more than 9,000 were able to participate – the most ever in the 52-year history of the organization.

It’s a common practice for the reigning president to honor several members with the presidential award for their work during the previous year.&nbsp; While Paige’s year as president ended in June 2020, she has been busy with responsibilities as the immediate past president.&nbsp;

“The first half of my year as president was very typical,” she said, “and the second half was like building a plane while we were flying it, with the online pivot because of the pandemic.”

Paige was surprised and honored when the president of NASP contacted her before the official announcement during the convention and told her about her award.

NASP represents more than 25,000 school psychologists, graduate students, and related professionals throughout the United States and 25 other countries. It is the world’s largest organization of school psychologists and works to advance effective practices to improve students’ learning, behavior, and mental health.

Paige said one of the most rewarding aspects of her time as president was how everyone pulled together during the pandemic.

“In a crisis, we can’t be expected to do work as usual. We have to be able to provide support for people,” she said. “For years, a lot of graduate educator faculty and school psychology programs believed you can’t teach psychology online. I have always thought, ‘Yes you can.’ This spring, in an incredibly short amount of time, we were able to continue our advocacy work through webinars. It was the worst of times and the best of times.”

Paige has held other leadership positions on the NASP board of directors, including treasurer and secretary. She has chaired and co-chaired numerous committees, including awards, leadership development, ethics, professional development, and publications. She has also been a member of the PREPaRE School Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training Curriculum workgroup and the Strategic Planning committees.

During Paige’s year serving as president, the NASP launched several initiatives in the areas of social justice, equity, and diversity.

During her final few months as immediate past president, Paige will help complete ongoing initiatives. Beginning with the organization’s new year in June, Paige will begin serving as chair of NASP’s Professional Growth Committee. She will also help plan the 2022 convention.

FHSU’s Paige honored by National Association of School Psychologists

COLBY — Colby Community College will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, to celebrate the beginning of construction on the Colby Tennis Center. The public event is at the site of the old tennis courts northeast of the Cultural Arts Center.

The 21,328 square-foot building features two full-size collegiate tennis courts, two full-size pickleball courts, and a walking area.&nbsp;<a>It will</a>&nbsp;be open 24 hours a day and accessible to the community.

College President Dr. Seth Carter believes the building aligns with the mission of CCC.

"This facility will benefit northwest Kansas and the surrounding communities for decades to come," he said. "I am so humbled by the generosity and tenacity that went into creating this facility. I want to thank everyone who made it possible."

Grants and donations are funding the $1 million-plus project. Once the total amount was secured, the CCC Board of Trustees selected Stephens Construction of Colby.

All individuals contributing will be named on the Colby Tennis Center donor wall. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made to the Colby Community College Endowment Foundation.

The facility is expected to open in September.

SHERMAN COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Sunday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Chevy pickup driven by Brandon N. Cowan, 33, Goodland, was northbound on County Road 23 two miles north of Old Highway 24.

The pickup left roadway to the right, struck a pole and rolled into the east ditch.

EMS transported&nbsp;Cowan and passengers Cade M.&nbsp;Migchelbrink, 17, Atwood and Cooper Cowan, 2, Goodland, to the hospital in Goodland. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The theme for this year’s National Poison Prevention Week is: Prepare. Prevent. Protect.

Prepare&nbsp;– Save the Poison Control number 1-800-222-1222 in your phone in case of an emergency.

Prevent&nbsp;– More than 90% of poisonings happen in the home. To make your home safer, always read and follow directions on labels and keep potential poisons locked up and away in their original containers.

Protect&nbsp;– Seconds count! If you suspect a poisoning, don’t take a chance. Call right away.

Not everyone realizes that Poison Centers are for everyone. While poison centers get more calls about children, the calls about teens, adults, and older adults tend to be more serious. Nearly 60% of calls to the Kansas Poison Control in 2020 involved medicines or pharmaceuticals. However, other common poisons include household products, plants, mushrooms, pesticides, animal bites and stings, carbon monoxide, and many other types of nonpharmaceutical substances.

“The best piece of advice we can give is to program the Poison Help number, 800-222-1222, in your phone and post it visibly in your home. This way you are prepared in the event of a poisoning emergency or simply have questions,” said Stefanie Baines, Education Coordinator for the Kansas Poison Control Center.

60% of calls to Kan. Poison Control in 2020 involved medicines, pharmaceuticals

Tucked along Wichita Street in Russell is a quirky, brightly painted little building.&nbsp;

The building is split into two sections. On one side is David Friday's art studio — the Friday Art Factory. On the other side sits a bright red barber chair, where the barber of more than 20 years cuts hair.

Friday's art is currently being exhibited at Professor's Sandwich Shop in Hays, which will be on view through March. He will be part of an exhibit with 11 other Kansas artists on the theme "story weather" at the Denies Cultural Center from April 16 to May 22.

He also has an upcoming exhibit in November 2022 at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery in Lindsborg.

Friday lived in Russell and attended Russell High School as a teen. He moved back to the community five years ago to be near family.

Friday studied for a time at Wichita State University, but, for the most part, he is a self-taught artist.

He became a sign painter in the early '70s and eventually went into commercial graphic design. He worked in McPherson and later moved to Denver and San Diego.

He made the move to focus on fine art in 1981 and went to barber school in 1997.

"That was the best thing I ever did for my art career, because it keeps the rent paid," he said.

Friday said being a barber is also being an artist.

"Every haircut is a little sculpture," he said, "so there is a lot of satisfaction from just doing good work in doing someone's hair.&nbsp;

"What is probably most valuable to me is my people contact, because painting is an activity I do in a room by myself. It can be quite solitary and quite lonesome.&nbsp;

"Cutting hair is very social. You're talking to someone different every 15 minutes. Those two things really balance each other out well."

Being an artist and a barber also balance each other economically. Selling a painting is feast or famine, Friday explained, but his barber income is steady.

Friday's regulars at the barber shop know he's an artist, but newbees are often surprised when they walk in the shop/studio.

"They usually go, 'Wow! Who did all of these paintings?' " he said. "But now most of my customers know me, and they can see on the front of my building that I am both a barber and an artist."

Friday worked with his landlord to remodel the former lawnmower repair shop. The front door sports a painting of a chubby little man in a barber's chair. The inside also features many of Friday's paintings in both his studio and the barber shop.

Friday primarily works in acrylics and has an affinity for bright colors. He uses an acrylic compound made of crushed marble to add texture to many of his paintings.

He said his art is influenced by a little bit of everything.

"I'm influenced by nature. I'm influenced by other artists' work that I see," he said.&nbsp;

He honed his craft by copying other famous artists, including Picasso, Thomas Hart Benton, Birger Sandzén and Lester Raymer. Friday was an artists in residence at Raymer's Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg.

"I'm an untrained artist," he said. "Most of my learning has been learning by doing."

Friday said paintings of sunflowers, windmills and barns are in demand in Kansas, but he also likes to paint people.&nbsp;

"They are just characters that I make up, and they become friends when I'm painting them," he said.

Friday, 67, says he has no plans for retirement either from being a barber or his painting.

"I will do it as long as my body will let me," he said. ... "Picasso lived to 92 and painted until up to the day he died, so that is sort of my goal too — I make it to 92, and I'm still painting.&nbsp;

Russell artist also a Picasso with clippers

The annual HaysMed Service Awards celebration was held last week in Hays. Due to COVID-19 a drive thru event was held at the hospital honoring the Associates who have reached milestones in their service at HaysMed.

The highlight of the celebration is the presentation of the Norman W. Jeter Humanitarian Award, the Sister Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year Award and the Vic Eddy, MD, Physician of the Year Award.  These awards are the highest level of recognition that an associate of HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, can receive.

The Norman W. Jeter Humanitarian Award recognizes an individual’s human kindness and dedication to medical excellence.&nbsp; The award was presented to Theresa Roe, Physical Therapist.&nbsp; Roe is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at the hospital.

Recipient of the Sr. Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year Award was Diane Scott, RN.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This award honors a nurse who displays excellence in the areas of job knowledge and performance, quality improvements, self-development and participation in hospital and community affairs.&nbsp; Scott is a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.

— Award winners have been announced for the annual Art on the Oasis show held
March 5 to 7 at Colby Community College. Organizers extend appreciation to the
donors and communities involved with another successful event.&nbsp;

The
judge was Fort Hays State University sculpture professor Tobias Flores.

The
top three artists in professional, amateur, and high school divisions were
presented with cash prizes. High schools at the show included Colby, Decatur
Community, Hoxie, Oakley, Phillipsburg, Wheatland-Grinnell, and
Wauneta-Palisade in Nebraska.&nbsp;

Julie

The project will consist of a 1-inch mill and 2-inch overlay beginning at S Road and ending at 12th&nbsp;Street in Stockton. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours, and minor delays should be expected.

KDOT anticipates work to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting.

Resurfacing project starting on U.S. 183 in Rooks County

All-American. That designation is for the highest level of collegiate sports performance.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today we’ll learn about a rural Kansas woman who founded a business that is helping create All-Americans in the sport of equestrian riding.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ann White is the founder and owner of Vermillion Valley Equine Center near Belvue. Ann grew up in Manhattan and loved horses as a girl. “My parents were not into horses, but they allowed me to have riding lessons,” Ann said. Horses became her passion. She started traveling and training horses and riders, particularly in the English style of riding.&nbsp;

Ann went to Kansas State University and met Mike White. They married, and she moved onto his family farm, named Vermillion Valley Farms. “I had been traveling around to train horses, but when I started having children, I did the training here (at the farm),” she said. “I didn’t really think people would come clear out here but they did, and now I think our rural setting is one of the biggest draws.”&nbsp;

In order to have a space to train, Ann mowed a patch out of the wheatfield. “The next year, I mowed a little bigger patch,” she said. “We just kept adding on.”&nbsp;

That was the beginning of Vermillion Valley Equine Center. Today,&nbsp;Vermillion Valley Equine Center is a full-service horse boarding facility specializing in the English riding disciplines of hunters, jumpers, equitation and eventing. Horse training and riding lessons are offered for all ages and skill levels. “We cover the whole gamut, from rank amateurs to those competing at the national level,” Ann said.&nbsp;

The facility has capacity for 60 horses, including 23 “school horses” used for the riding academy. The facility includes large arenas with sand footing on a limestone base, a round pen and a 10-acre, cross-country schooling field. The newest arena is 150 feet x 300 feet in size and features a water jump, hill and bank complex. Ann has a mobile trailer for sales of tack. She opened a brick-and-mortar tack shop in Wamego six years ago. Altogether,&nbsp;the facility&nbsp;includes all the elements one would need for equestrian training.&nbsp;

Such training has produced excellent results, beginning close to home. “Horses put my daughters through college,” Ann said. All three daughters – Alice, Jessica and Amy – worked and rode on the farm. Two earned college scholarships for joining the equestrian team at Oklahoma State University. The third went for a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh and lives in Europe. The other two daughters have come back to the farm as professional trainers.&nbsp;

“As a farm wife, it is very special that our daughters would come home and work with us,” Ann said. Now there are six professional trainers working at&nbsp;Vermillion Valley Equine Center. Ann and her daughters and clients have literally traveled coast to coast, and even overseas, for equine events.&nbsp;

Among her clients are those seeking to compete nationally. “I’m proud of the professionals who got their start here,” Ann said. She has trained riders who achieved All-American status on equestrian teams at Texas A&amp;M and Baylor Universities, and became team captains at K-State, Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, Oklahoma State and others. “It was a terrible shame that K-State discontinued its equestrian team,” Ann said. Her facility is now home to the&nbsp;K-State Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Hunt Seat Team and the Flint Hills Pony Club for younger kids.&nbsp;

“It’s great to see the national awards, but it’s also as important to see the kids who will never enter a horse show grow and learn in their self-confidence,” Ann said. “The awards and ribbons are fine, but it’s wonderful to see the people who return here with their kids and grandkids.”&nbsp;

How great to find this facility on a family farm outside of the rural community of Belvue, population 205 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Ann White, Vermillion Valley Equine Center 

Thomas More Prep-Marian this week announced the following
staff additions at the junior high.


Jason Capser will join the Junior High as the science instructor after
having most recently taught at St. Christopher Catholic School, Las Vegas,
Nev. As a retired Army veteran and with experience in educating students in
the areas of math and science, Mr. Casper will be a valued member of the
TMP-Marian Junior High. Mr. Casper has earned his Master of Science in
Forensic Science from National University, Bachelor of Arts in
Anthropology/Religious Studies from Arizona State University and


Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from American InterContinental University.


Beginning with the 2021-22 academic year, Mr. Casper will be replacing Mr. Randy Brull who
stepped in after the unexpected death of Mr. Jim Balthazor in 2020.


“What I hope that I am bringing to the Junior High is a sense of worth, excellence, and
dedication not just in everything that we do academically and in life but spiritually as well,” said
Casper.


Becky Fox will assume the role of Junior High Guidance Counselor in
preparation for the 2021-22 academic year. Mrs Fox joins TMP-Marian after
having served as the Guidance Counselor at Lincoln Elementary for the past
two years and has earned her Master of Science in School Counseling and
Bachelor of Science in Psychology/Sociology from Fort Hays State
University.


“I hope to bring a positive attitude and the tools and skills necessary to help the junior high
students at TMP-Marian Junior High be successful. I am passionate about student well-being
and hope to be able to help the students navigate the challenges of the junior high years in a
positive way and help them to excel academically as they prepare for high school and their
careers later on,” said Fox.


“I believe everyone deserves to be able to speak and be heard. Life has ups and downs, and as
students get older, they face academic, social, and emotional challenges. It is the school
counselor’s job to be there for them and help them learn skills and strategies to overcome these
obstacles. I also think that a big part of school counseling is helping students realize their full
potential and begin discovering who they are called to be,” concluded Fox.


"I feel like we are adding two tremendous educators, and more importantly, student-focused role
models to our junior high staff," said Principal Chad Meitner. "The teaching and life experiences
these two bring to our already impressive JH faculty is exciting and replete with possibilities!"

 </figure>Becky Fox will assume the role of Junior High Guidance Counselor in
preparation for the 2021-22 academic year. Mrs Fox joins TMP-Marian after
having served as the Guidance Counselor at Lincoln Elementary for the past
two years and has earned her Master of Science in School Counseling and
Bachelor of Science in Psychology/Sociology from Fort Hays State
University.
“I hope to bring a positive attitude and the tools and skills necessary to help the junior high
students at TMP-Marian Junior High be successful. I am passionate about student well-being
and hope to be able to help the students navigate the challenges of the junior high years in a
positive way and help them to excel academically as they prepare for high school and their
careers later on,” said Fox.
“I believe everyone deserves to be able to speak and be heard. Life has ups and downs, and as
students get older, they face academic, social, and emotional challenges. It is the school
counselor’s job to be there for them and help them learn skills and strategies to overcome these
obstacles. I also think that a big part of school counseling is helping students realize their full
potential and begin discovering who they are called to be,” concluded Fox.
"I feel like we are adding two tremendous educators, and more importantly, student-focused role
models to our junior high staff," said Principal Chad Meitner. "The teaching and life experiences
these two bring to our already impressive JH faculty is exciting and replete with possibilities!"
Located in Hays, Kan., the Heartland Parishes Catholic Schools, Thomas More Prep-Marian and
Holy Family Elementary, is a Catholic school system serving grades PK-12. Students come from
Hays, the surrounding region, and from countries around the world. Under the direction of the
Diocese of Salina, the Heartland Parishes Catholic Schools are supported by the Catholic

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday announced more than $2 million in grants have been awarded to continue improving the response to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and stalking.&nbsp;

The Federal Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program (S.T.O.P. VAWA) supports communities in their efforts to develop and strengthen effective responses to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

“We have a responsibility to do all we can to protect victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants will strengthen our services and provide support to those who need it most.”

Two Ellis County organizations — Options: Domestic and Sexual Violence Services and Northwest Kansas Community Corrections — were among the grant recipients.

Specifically, the funds enable local communities to enhance law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women; increase and improve services provided to victims of intimate partner related violent crimes; and promote a coordinated community response to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, rape, and stalking.

The Federal Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) funding is dedicated to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault and their families.&nbsp;These funds support sexual assault and rape crisis centers providing services to victims and survivors.

Funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.&nbsp;

NW Kan. organizations earn grants to support domestic violence, assault survivors

The 2021 Kansas Legislature is Upside-Down-land, filled with lawmakers who focus their attention on non-problems, while purposefully ignoring the state’s real issues.

Reflecting the nutty fixation of Senator Roger Marshall, statehouse Republicans have focused immense attention on the burning question of whether Kansas transgender female athletes, perhaps five in total, should be able to compete in women’s sports.&nbsp; As with many other states’ partisans, Kansas Republicans studiously avoid important issues &nbsp;by obsessing on the bright shiny object of transgendered students, who are among the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

In passing an anti-trans athletes measure through an “emergency” (sic) process, Kansas risks the fate of states experiencing boycotts after passing such bills, including North Carolina’s misguided “bathroom bill” that lost that state more than $400 million in events revenues.

Contrast this with the legislators’ intransigent unwillingness to address Medicaid expansion, which would directly address the needs of more than 100,000 Kansans.&nbsp; This gross neglect over the past decade, which has cost Kansas more over $3 billion in funding, is even more shameful and stupid in 2021, given provisions of the American Recovery Plan (ARP).&nbsp;

Aside from many other positive health care provisions, the ARP offers new, enhanced incentives for Kansas to expand Medicaid, most notably an extra $450 million in benefits over the next two years, compared to increased expenditures of $210 million.&nbsp; The state would come out a big fiscal winner in tough times and up to 150,000 thousand Kansans would receive health coverage.

At the same time, real issues of health care, a Covid-weakened economy, higher education, and yes, actual discrimination against trans students, go unaddressed.&nbsp;&nbsp;Upside-Down, indeed.Burdett Loomis is an emeritus professor of political science at the University of Kansas.
