Even though I am a grandpa, I try hard not to look or act like the stereotypical, frumpy, old grandpa who thinks the world should function like it did when I was a kid, but allow me to digress a little in starting this week’s column.

I’m the oldest of five kids, and my nearest sibling in age is six years younger than me, so growing up, I had to learn to amuse myself, a skill sadly missing in many kids today. I’ll come clean here that I love my smart phone. I’m a FOX News junky, and enjoy surfing through FOX news or Facebook on my phone when sitting in front of TV in the evening or when waiting on my wife in a store parking lot, so I understand the draw. But When I was a kid and on-my-own, I learned to build hay forts in the haymow, shoot blackbirds along the creek with mom’s old .410 shotgun, and to catch crawdads under the bridge that crossed the creek in our pasture.&nbsp;

That bridge had metal sides that were three or four feet high and was built like a tank, but the huge, thick wooden planks that were the floor, were not fastened down and just laid in place, so there were big gaps between them. I learned I could lay on the planks looking through at the creek below, and catch crawdads with a long, forked willow stick. The water below was shallow and clear, and the crawdads would lay in the mud there. I’d cut the forked ends of the stick three or four inches long, and when I jabbed the forked end across an unsuspecting crawdad, they would flex enough to trap it between them like a clamp, and I could often raise the captured crawdad up through the planks, where I’d pull it out, toss it back and try again.

In the first chapter of Ecclesiastes 1 in the Bible, verse 9 says “What has been, will be again, what has been done, will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun.” Well guess what, speaking of crawdads, the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has discovered a new crawdad species in Kansas. The Aquatic Nuisance Species Program and Ecological Services section of the KDWPT recently funded a university project focused on sampling Kansas lakes for invasive “crayfish,” (which is the politically correct name for the little buggers.) This study establishes processes that can be used to monitor both native and invasive crayfish in KS, something that has never been done before, and a process that some questioned the need for. During capturing efforts at McPherson State Fishing Lake, the need for this process was validated early-on, as sampling found multiple Rusty Crayfish, an invasive species never before found in KS. Both males and females of various ages were found, indicating a reproducing population is established in McPherson State Fishing Lake. Rusty Crayfish are large aggressive crayfish known to attack the feet of unsuspecting swimmers, and outcompetes native fish and crayfish for forage that acts as important cover for select prey species.&nbsp;

Since Rusty Crayfish most likely arrived in Kansas as fishing bait, this a perfect place to remind everyone of the KS regulation regarding the use of live fishing bait here in our state. Quoting from the regulations, “Live baitfish, crayfish, leeches, amphibians and mussels, except for bluegill and green sunfish from non-designated aquatic nuisance waters, and baitfish, crayfish, leeches, amphibians and mussels from designated nuisance waters, may be caught and used as live bait only within the common drainage where caught.” In summary and in layman’s terms, this means, use wild bait ONLY where you catch it, DO NOT take it anywhere it couldn’t have gotten to on its own. This will help keep aquatic nuisance species like our “new” friend the Rusty Crayfish, from spreading to other KS waters… Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors.

Energy matters – a lot.&nbsp; In the last 200 years, global life expectancy has doubled.&nbsp; Extreme poverty has dropped from 90% of humanity to 10% and falling.&nbsp; The growth in human liberty and the dramatic increase in available energy are likely the two main catalysts for this tremendous progress. &nbsp;

Few doubt that energy has improved lives and enabled human progress.&nbsp; Yet one of the biggest challenges facing the world is the polarized debate over the future of energy.&nbsp; Facts and economics are too often replaced with assertions and emotions.&nbsp; Discussions about fossil fuels and alternative energy sources often degenerate into a battle to delegitimize the other side.&nbsp; This is a recipe for inaction.&nbsp; And it keeps billions of people trapped in energy poverty. &nbsp;

We should avoid energy policies driven by a zero-sum philosophy for energy that says we must have less fossil fuel so we can have more of something else.&nbsp; History has shown that short-sighted energy plans often fail because they start with a preferred resource and work backwards.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s energy plan promises to repeat the Obama/Biden legacy of failed energy policy, but this time he intends to spend more taxpayer money on what will likely be another failed enterprise.

&nbsp;According to the U.S. EPA and U.S. EIA, the U.S. decreased energy related CO2 emissions in 2019 more than any other country.&nbsp; Since 2005, U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have fallen by 12%, total CO2 emissions have fallen by 14%, methane emissions have fallen by 4%, and power sector CO2 emissions have fallen by 33%.&nbsp; The EPA’s GHG reporting data show the aggregate share of GHG inventory from oil and natural gas production is just 1.22% of total U.S. GHG emissions.&nbsp; America leads the world in environmental quality. &nbsp;

Reality has a way of biting back if you’re not paying attention to it.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s desire for extensive and unnecessary climate regulations will drive up the cost of energy.&nbsp; Higher energy costs disproportionately harm low-income groups.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s energy policy is out-of-touch with working people and the economy. &nbsp;

It doesn’t make sense to place unnecessary political and legal obstacles in the way of responsible American oil and natural gas production, cancel oil pipelines, discourage investment in fossil fuels, stimulate demand through outlandish spending, and then beg OPEC+ (where oil is produced under much less-strict environmental standards) for more oil to contain inflation.

The oil and gas industry has done such a good job of creating abundant, affordable, always-available energy that the world takes it for granted.&nbsp; Energy is so woven into our daily lives that few question whether it will be there, or where it comes from.&nbsp; Because energy is so reliable and available, the public believes they no longer require it.

We often encounter this paradox anytime we engage in a conversation about energy and the environment.&nbsp; Some folks assume that we don’t need fossil fuels anymore.&nbsp; A stark example is anyone who wants to end oil and gas production while still benefitting from oil and gas based materials and fuels.

The U.S. has a unique opportunity to show the world how energy can be used as a positive force to lift people up – which is different than a zero-emissions philosophy.&nbsp; To rise out of poverty and enjoy health and safety, people need more energy, not less.&nbsp; We should all work together to ensure more people have access to safe, affordable, and reliable energy, no matter which state, nation, or continent they reside.

 </figure>We should avoid energy policies driven by a zero-sum philosophy for energy that says we must have less fossil fuel so we can have more of something else.&nbsp; History has shown that short-sighted energy plans often fail because they start with a preferred resource and work backwards.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s energy plan promises to repeat the Obama/Biden legacy of failed energy policy, but this time he intends to spend more taxpayer money on what will likely be another failed enterprise.&nbsp;According to the U.S. EPA and U.S. EIA, the U.S. decreased energy related CO2 emissions in 2019 more than any other country.&nbsp; Since 2005, U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have fallen by 12%, total CO2 emissions have fallen by 14%, methane emissions have fallen by 4%, and power sector CO2 emissions have fallen by 33%.&nbsp; The EPA’s GHG reporting data show the aggregate share of GHG inventory from oil and natural gas production is just 1.22% of total U.S. GHG emissions.&nbsp; America leads the world in environmental quality. &nbsp;Reality has a way of biting back if you’re not paying attention to it.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s desire for extensive and unnecessary climate regulations will drive up the cost of energy.&nbsp; Higher energy costs disproportionately harm low-income groups.&nbsp; The Biden Administration’s energy policy is out-of-touch with working people and the economy. &nbsp;It doesn’t make sense to place unnecessary political and legal obstacles in the way of responsible American oil and natural gas production, cancel oil pipelines, discourage investment in fossil fuels, stimulate demand through outlandish spending, and then beg OPEC+ (where oil is produced under much less-strict environmental standards) for more oil to contain inflation.The oil and gas industry has done such a good job of creating abundant, affordable, always-available energy that the world takes it for granted.&nbsp; Energy is so woven into our daily lives that few question whether it will be there, or where it comes from.&nbsp; Because energy is so reliable and available, the public believes they no longer require it.We often encounter this paradox anytime we engage in a conversation about energy and the environment.&nbsp; Some folks assume that we don’t need fossil fuels anymore.&nbsp; A stark example is anyone who wants to end oil and gas production while still benefitting from oil and gas based materials and fuels.The U.S. has a unique opportunity to show the world how energy can be used as a positive force to lift people up – which is different than a zero-emissions philosophy.&nbsp; To rise out of poverty and enjoy health and safety, people need more energy, not less.&nbsp; We should all work together to ensure more people have access to safe, affordable, and reliable energy, no matter which state, nation, or continent they reside.Edward Cross is president of the&nbsp;Kansas Independent Oil &amp; Gas Association.

Laney was elevated from her previous employment as a Foster Care 
Supervisor for TFI. She has served as a social worker for 17 years and 
has experience in child welfare, mental health, managed health care, 
family services, medical social work, disability, advocacy, program 
development and management. Throughout Laney’s years of experience and 
schooling, she has studied the complex effects of individual, families, 
supervision, groups, systems and how they affect each other.

As the Director of Foster Care, Uphoff will provide direction, 
support, and oversight for the foster care program to ensure the safety 
and welfare of the children in foster care as well as the families being
 preserved.

“TFI is pleased to announce Laney Uphoff’s promotion to Director of 
Foster Care Services for Kansas and Nebraska,” said Vice President of 
Foster Care, Pamela Richardson. “Laney has been an integral part of our 
foster care team, providing critical input to the development and 
implementation of foster care programs and initiatives. We’re excited to
 see Laney apply her experience and education to help TFI grow our 
foster care program, serving children and families.”

In 2004, Uphoff received her Bachelor of Social Work from Fort Hays 
State University and in 2010, she received her Master of Social Work at 
Wichita State University.

FHSU grad named director of foster care for multi-state nonprofit

ELLIS COUNTY —Two children were injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Friday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 GMC SUV driven by&nbsp; Audra D.&nbsp;Berquist, 24, WaKeeney, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of the Yocemento Exit.

The SUV rear-ended a 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by Renee L. Rhodes, 40,&nbsp; Junction City, who was traveling at a slow rate of speed with its flashers on due to a flat tire earlier in the day and driving on a donut.

EMS transported an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy to Hays Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The KHP did not report where the children were from.

Berquist, Rhodes and an adult passenger in the Nissan were not injured. All Five were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

Curious George and Smoky Hills PBS are coming to Hays

The Rotary Club of Hays Noon Club recently received ShelterBox’s HERO recognition for their fiscal year 2020-2021.

The Rotary Club of Hays is being recognized because of its continued support of the ShelterBox program. 

Each year, Hays Rotary makes a donation to purchase one Shelter Box, which contains a 10-person tent, bedding, cooking items and a multi-fuel stove, mosquito netting, lighting, gloves and hats, and even children’s activity packs. 

“It is an honor to receive this recognition," said Josh Dreher, Rotary Club president. "Thanks to our club members and the generosity of our community we are able to support a wonderful cause like ShelterBox."

ShelterBox is a global nonprofit that provides emergency shelter and tools to displaced families around the world. 

Often delivered to areas after natural disasters, or in areas like refugee camps with large numbers of displaced persons, ShelterBox has provided aid to over 2 million people since 2000, including 33,000 families in 2020, and over 13,000 households in the first half of 2021. 

Shelter Boxes are delivered wherever needed by any means possible, including by helicopter.

ShelterBox is one of many non-profit organizations that the Rotary Club supports. 

Some of the local groups supported by the Rotary Club are Big Brothers &amp; Big Sisters, United Way of Ellis County, First Call for Help, Options, The Hays Larks, and Hays Arts Council’s Famous Figures contest.

Celebrating All Things Kansas is the theme of the 2021 Kansas State Fair. As a 4-H’er growing up, I lived too far away to attend and see my exhibits on display at the Kansas State Fair which is why I love to make time each year to check out many areas of the fair!

The carnival midway and concerts don’t draw me in, however. You can find me at a livestock show, viewing the commercial displays, catching up with friends, and my very favorite activity – checking out all of the 4-H exhibits!

Youth from all 105 counties will have woodworking, rockets, foods, photography, and much, much more on display! The 4-H project for each of these youth qualified at their local county fair and I appreciate all of the creativity and project learning on display!&nbsp;

As I look at an entomology box, I see the hours of collecting insect specimens, researching to identify each one, and carefully completing the display.&nbsp;

Each clothing project involves hours of selecting just the right pattern and appropriate fabric then creating that clothing item. I also understand the hours of removing a seam that wasn’t quite right which I can tell you from experience is an exercise in patience!&nbsp;

One of my favorite areas is the Public Presentations where 4-H youth share a demonstration, illustrated talk, or a poetry/prose reading. Standing before an unknown group of people and a judge with the distractions of fair goers walking through the building takes practice and focus.&nbsp;

So while you are at the Kansas State Fair “Celebrating All Things Kansas” seeing the butter sculpture, having a corn dog, and checking out the rides on the midway, be sure to include a walk through the 4-H exhibits.

BERAN: Explore the Kansas State Fair

“Music helps to keep you happy.”&nbsp;&nbsp;If that’s the case, the person who said it has been happy for a long time.&nbsp;

Today we’ll meet a rural Kansas man who has turned 99 years old and is still playing music. Thanks to Marilyn Jones for this story idea and to writer Julie Govert Walter and the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging for their related article.&nbsp;

Bob Delk turned 99 years old in August 2021. He grew up north of Peabody where he attended country school at the unincorporated community of Aulne, which today has a population of perhaps 50 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

After graduating from Peabody High School and getting married, he moved two miles north and two miles west of the place where he grew up and started farming with his wife’s family. “I did mechanic work, all the things a farmer has to do,” he said. He lived on that farm until 2016 when he moved to a house in Hillsboro.&nbsp;

Bob grew up in a musical family. “I idolized my dad,” Bob said. “He played violin and guitar. When I was 12, I decided I would like to play too. My dad showed me a few chords on a ukulele.”&nbsp;

The year was 1934. Eighty-seven years later, Bob is still playing.&nbsp;

In the early years, the Delk family had their own music group. Bob learned to play four string banjo and guitar. Father John played guitar and violin.&nbsp;

“My sister Betty played the piano and my mother Lydia played the flat guitar which is now called the dobro,” Bob said. They played at churches, schoolhouses, and community events in the region. Bob’s favorite musical group growing up was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.&nbsp;

In 1943, Bob was invited to play with a group called the Peabody Plainsmen. That group, with various members, played together for some 60 years. Bob’s sister Betty would later marry one of the founders of the Peabody Plainsmen.&nbsp;

The group’s first gig was at the Marion County Fair in 1943. They performed at many communities across Kansas, including the Kansas State Fair. The group became widely known in central Kansas – so well known, in fact, that they attracted the attention of a namesake group in Texas.&nbsp;

“There was another group called the Plainsmen Quartet,” Bob said. “They wanted to sue us for taking their name but then they found out we had the name before they did, so we never heard any more about it.”&nbsp;

Later, Bob formed his own group called Bob and the Boys which lasted for some 25 years.&nbsp;

In 1976, Bob bought a Gibson Les Paul guitar that he still plays. Now he joins in jam sessions at the Hillsboro Senior Center and has played at the farmer’s market in Peabody.&nbsp;

Guitar is his instrument of choice. He plays songs from various genres such as gospel, big band, and country-western. He is not a singer but an instrumentalist. “I’ve always been part of a group,” he said. He has traveled with various groups throughout the central U.S, among them the Singspirationals and the Menno Brass Ensemble.&nbsp;

Bob and Aldene farmed and raised four children. In 1999, after 54 years of marriage, Aldene was killed in a tragic auto accident near Herington.&nbsp;

Bob later married Dorothy. They would travel to various festivals and events all over the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;and beyond. Before she succumbed to cancer in 2017, Dorothy would travel with Bob to south Texas in the winter where he would jam several times a day with musicians there. Bob now lives in his own home at Hillsboro and continues to drive.&nbsp;

The family musical tradition continues. “Some of my grandsons and great-grandsons play guitar and other instruments and sing, and my nephew plays keyboard and trumpet,” Bob said. “I love music, I love people and I love to visit.”&nbsp;

“Music helps to keep you happy,” Bob said. We commend Bob Delk and his family for making a difference with his musical talents.&nbsp;&nbsp;He’s been playing music and making people happy for a lifetime.&nbsp;

He lived on that farm until 2016 when he moved to a house in Hillsboro.&nbsp;Bob grew up in a musical family. “I idolized my dad,” Bob said. “He played violin and guitar. When I was 12, I decided I would like to play too. My dad showed me a few chords on a ukulele.”&nbsp;The year was 1934. Eighty-seven years later, Bob is still playing.&nbsp;In the early years, the Delk family had their own music group. Bob learned to play four string banjo and guitar. Father John played guitar and violin.&nbsp;“My sister Betty played the piano and my mother Lydia played the flat guitar which is now called the dobro,” Bob said. They played at churches, schoolhouses, and community events in the region. Bob’s favorite musical group growing up was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.&nbsp;In 1943, Bob was invited to play with a group called the Peabody Plainsmen. That group, with various members, played together for some 60 years. Bob’s sister Betty would later marry one of the founders of the Peabody Plainsmen.&nbsp;The group’s first gig was at the Marion County Fair in 1943. They performed at many communities across Kansas, including the Kansas State Fair. The group became widely known in central Kansas – so well known, in fact, that they attracted the attention of a namesake group in Texas.&nbsp;“There was another group called the Plainsmen Quartet,” Bob said. “They wanted to sue us for taking their name but then they found out we had the name before they did, so we never heard any more about it.”&nbsp;Later, Bob formed his own group called Bob and the Boys which lasted for some 25 years.&nbsp;In 1976, Bob bought a Gibson Les Paul guitar that he still plays. Now he joins in jam sessions at the Hillsboro Senior Center and has played at the farmer’s market in Peabody.&nbsp;Guitar is his instrument of choice. He plays songs from various genres such as gospel, big band, and country-western. He is not a singer but an instrumentalist. “I’ve always been part of a group,” he said. He has traveled with various groups throughout the central U.S, among them the Singspirationals and the Menno Brass Ensemble.&nbsp;Bob and Aldene farmed and raised four children. In 1999, after 54 years of marriage, Aldene was killed in a tragic auto accident near Herington.&nbsp;Bob later married Dorothy. They would travel to various festivals and events all over the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;and beyond. Before she succumbed to cancer in 2017, Dorothy would travel with Bob to south Texas in the winter where he would jam several times a day with musicians there. Bob now lives in his own home at Hillsboro and continues to drive.&nbsp;The family musical tradition continues. “Some of my grandsons and great-grandsons play guitar and other instruments and sing, and my nephew plays keyboard and trumpet,” Bob said. “I love music, I love people and I love to visit.”&nbsp;“Music helps to keep you happy,” Bob said. We commend Bob Delk and his family for making a difference with his musical talents.&nbsp;&nbsp;He’s been playing music and making people happy for a lifetime.&nbsp;

The Fort Hays State University Foundation recently appointed three new members to its Board of Trustees: John Francis, Rod Lake and Heidi Weis.&nbsp;

John Francis&nbsp;is a 1981 graduate of FHSU with a degree in Business Administration Economics. He and his wife, Nancy, currently reside in Great Bend, where John owns and operates Francis Financial Services, Inc. Carrying that leadership into the Fort Hays State Foundation, Francis is a past Board of Trustee member, having served on the Executive Committee and the Investment Committee. His involvement with the Foundation also includes being a Leadership Circle member, an “I Fed the Tiger” sponsor, and a Wooster Society member.

Rod Lake&nbsp;received his degree in Communication from Fort Hays State in 1980. Longtime supporters of FHSU, he and his wife, Charlene, live in Dallas, where he is retired from a career in communications. He was also a stay-at-home parent for 20 years and is a competitive cyclist. Lake has been involved with the FHSU Foundation as a Leadership Circle member and University Ambassador.

Heidi Weis&nbsp;graduated from FHSU in 1995 with a degree in Foreign Language and History. Weis also holds an MBA and Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas. She currently serves as managing director for Deloitte Consulting and lives with her husband, Jeremy, and their family in Mission. She has had a variety of career experiences with Deloitte, including supporting diversity and inclusion through leadership and consulting of various women’s initiatives.

The current Foundation board is comprised of 54 alumni and friends of the university, with each trustee serving a four-year term. Each trustee actively participates in a variety of activities contributing to the educational and financial success of the university and the FHSU Foundation.&nbsp;

“I can’t thank this dedicated group of Tiger supporters enough for their generosity and for their gifts of time, talent, and treasure,” said Jason Williby, FHSU Foundation president and CEO. “This group has made an incredible impact on Fort Hays State University, on our Foundation’s fundraising efforts, and the overall success of our Journey campaign. These trustees come from a variety of education and industry backgrounds representing all five colleges at Fort Hays State University. Trustees were recently back on campus for their annual business meeting and trustee weekend activities. With a full schedule of events on Friday, members started their visit with a public dedication and celebration of FHSU’s Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design. Trustees heard from Schmidt Foundation trustees, current students, and Fort Hays State President Dr. Tisa Mason. In addition to tours of the Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design, trustees got a first peek at the university’s stunning new Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success, which was completed just weeks ago. Trustees heard updates from various areas of the university, visited with FHSU leadership, enjoyed lunch in the newly renovated Peter Werth Black &amp; Gold Room within the Memorial Union, and cheered along to “In Heaven There Is No Beer” during a private performance from the FHSU Tiger marching band, Tiger Debs, and cheer squad. They ended their Friday celebrating a successful Journey campaign and hearing from outgoing trustee chair, Curtis Longpine, and incoming chair, Kevin Faulkner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Saturday, trustees attended their annual business meeting, then came back together for a fun evening attending FHSU’s 12th Annual Tiger Auction and Dinner.&nbsp;

“I look forward to welcoming our Board of Trustees back to campus each year,” Williby added. “They definitely get an insider view of what’s taking place on our campus, and this year was no exception.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Foundation serves as the fundraising arm of Fort Hays State University. It raises and manages all funds that are entrusted to it for the benefit of various needs in support of the university and it works closely with FHSU to support the university's initiatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

FHSU Foundation welcomes new members to board of trustees

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported 45 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Wednesday.

It was the highest number of new cases identified between reporting period since December. The KDHE reports on case numbers each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

There have been 293 new COVID-19 cases identified in Ellis County after a lull in cases dwindled to near zero in June.

As of Tuesday, the University of Kansas Health System reported 12 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed. No further updates have been posted as of noon Friday.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,097 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 74 coronavirus-related deaths.

Hays received 1.24 inches of rain from Thursday through 8 a.m. Friday, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

More rain is in the forecast for this weekend.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Friday with a&nbsp; high near 83 in Hays.

Showers and thunderstorms will be likely, mainly after 11 Friday night.&nbsp; The chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts are predicted between a quarter and half of an inch.

Saturday there's a&nbsp;30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon. The forecast then calls for cloudy skies, gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 78.

The NWS predicts the weather to clear for the rest of the Labor Day weekend with a high of 82 Sunday and 88 on Monday.

Hays' average rainfall for September is 2.22 inches. The city has received 23.89 inches of precipitation year to date compared to an average of 19.95 inches by the end of September.

McCarrick, who now lives in Dittmer, Missouri, faces three counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, according to court documents. He can still face charges because he wasn’t a Massachusetts resident and had left the state, stopping the clock on the statute of limitations.

McCarrick’s fall began in 2017 when a former altar boy came forward to report the priest had groped him when he was a teenager in New York. The next year, the Archdiocese of New York announced that McCarrick had been removed from ministry after finding the allegation to be “credible and substantiated,” and two New Jersey dioceses revealed they had settled claims of sexual misconduct against him in the past involving adults.

Pope Francis&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pope-francis-ap-top-news-international-news-ks-state-wire-nj-state-wire-33645dd626674bec9ef6198528267dc6">defrocked McCarrick in 2019</a>&nbsp;after a Vatican investigation determined he sexually abused minors, as well as adults.

A two-year internal investigation into McCarrick&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/theodore-mccarrick-vatican-investigation-0204b0d67e0685d658bae71cf558383a">found that three decades of bishops, cardinals and popes downplayed or dismissed multiple reports of sexual misconduct</a>. The investigative findings released last year pinned much of the blame on Pope John Paul II, who appointed McCarrick archbishop of Washington, D.C., despite having commissioned an inquiry that confirmed McCarrick slept with seminarians.

In the Massachusetts case, the man told authorities during an interview in January that McCarrick was close to his family when he was growing up and that the abuse started when he was a young boy.

The man said that during his brother’s wedding reception at Wellesley College in June 1974 — when he was 16 — McCarrick told him that his father wanted him to have a talk with McCarrick because the boy was “being mischievous at home and not attending church.”

The man said that the two of them went for a walk around campus and McCarrick groped him before they went back to the party. The man said McCarrick also sexually assaulted him in a “coat room type closet” after they returned to the reception, authorities wrote in the documents.

The man told investigators that before leaving the room, McCarrick told him to “say three Our Fathers and a Hail Mary or it was one Our Father and three Hail Marys, so God can redeem you of your sins,” according to the report.

Ex-Cardinal who lived in Ellis Co. enters plea in sex assault

Update: The Hays arrival time has been updated to 2:15 p.m. Friday.

After snaking across the U.S. this summer, Union Pacific No. 4014, affectionately known as the Big Boy, will return to Ellis County on Friday, with an overnight stay again planned in Hays.

During this year's tour, the locomotive, a favorite of the Union Pacific heritage fleet, is scheduled to leave Salina at 9 a.m. Friday, with stops planned through the day in Ellsworth, Wilson and Russell, before stopping for the night in Hays at 2:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the train is scheduled to depart Hays at 8 a.m., first stopping in Ellis, then Quinter before stopping in Sharon Springs for the night Saturday and completing the Kansas leg of the trip.

In Ellis, itself is known for its ties to the railroad, a watch party is planned in the newly remodeled Railroad Park.

"With the train stopping on a Saturday, this really makes for a really fun event if you have kids or grandchildren, or just want to come out and see the railroad museum if you haven't," said Ellis Alliance Executive Director Sophia Henrickson.

Along with seeing the Big Boy, the event is a Community Foundation of Ellis fundraiser that will help continue park improvements, with track repairs still needed&nbsp;for the Railroad Museum's&nbsp;one-third scale replica of GM’s 1950s Aerotrain.

"So we are fundraising to finish out that project with these donut sales," Henrickson said. "With Big Boy stopping at 9 a.m. Saturday, we are starting at 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts."

While stopping in Ellis to visit the train, she said visitors can stop in the museum, ride the miniature train and enjoy downtown.&nbsp;

"Come over to Ellis, you will get donuts, and coffee while you wait for the Big Boy to come and stop," Henrickson said. "The railroad museum is going to be open. If you have been there come back if you haven't been before ... this is a good opportunity because you are getting the joy of (seeing) the Big Boy, the joy of the Ellis Railroad Museum and then the miniature train rides will also be going."

After the train's departure, the event will continue with a hot dog barbecue.

The Railroad Museum will also be selling T-shirts to commemorate the day.

"It just makes for a fun day full of trains," Henrickson said. "I encourage people to consider coming to Ellis to see it stop."
