Gella’s Diner &amp; Lb. Brewing Co. was awarded a silver medal at
the 2021 Great American Beer Festival competition, presented by the Brewers Association. The
best beers in 97 beer categories covering 175 different beer styles (including all subcategories) were
awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals at a ceremony at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Friday
evening during the Craft Brewers Conference and livestreamed on The Brewing Network.

Judging took place in 34 sessions over 17 days with strict health and safety measures in place. 170
judges evaluated 9,680 entries from 2,192 breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and
Puerto Rico.


“Despite being forced to cancel the festival portion of GABF, our brewing community rallied together to
make this year’s GABF competition one for the books — our largest competition judged to date,” said
Chris Swersey, competition director, Great American Beer Festival. “Judges continue to be impressed
with the quality and innovation of all entries they evaluated. The Brewers Association is proud to honor
this year’s deserving winners.”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported 20 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Wednesday.

There have been 442 new COVID-19 cases identified in Ellis County after a lull in cases dwindled to near zero in June.

As of Friday morning, there were 13 COVID inpatients at HaysMed.&nbsp;

The KDHE reported Wednesday 48 percent of eligible Ellis County residents are fully vaccinated, noting the vaccination rate for the entire Kansas population (12 and older) is approximately 59 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,246 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 74 coronavirus-related deaths.

The Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Friday Hays has been selected as the site for the 50th&nbsp;Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl on July 15, 2023.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl is a nonprofit charity that works to raise funds and awareness for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Since 1974 these prestigious high school football all-star games have raised over $3 million.

The event routinely brings 6,000 to 8,000 visitors to the host community. It is expected the 50th&nbsp;could draw even more of a crowd.

“We are excited our event will be returning to the Hays community for this very special game,” said Kansas Shrine Bowl Executive Director B.J. Harris in a news release. “Hays has proven to be a great host for us in the past, and we’re confident it will be the perfect backdrop for our 50th&nbsp;game.”

Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau staff prepared a bid for the 50th event, which included a lengthy application, pledges for partnerships, and, in the final selection round, an in-person pitch, which was presented by Janet Kuhn, Hays CVB convention and sales manager. Kuhn helped bring the Kansas Shrine Bowl to Hays in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

“Our community partners — from Fort Hays State University, local law enforcement, and our lodging properties, to the Ellis County Fair Board and local Shriners — all work together to make Hays a welcoming destination time and time again,” Kuhn said in a news release.

As the host community, Hays will partner to coordinate other events that accompany the Kansas Shrine Bowl, including a parade, band camp, cheerleading clinic, cross country event, golf tournament and banquet for 1,200 Shriners, participants and fans.

"I am just very, very thrilled to have the Shriners choose Hays," Hays Mayor Sandy Jacobs said during a press conference Friday morning. "We work every day to ensure we have a very good environment for activities such as this.&nbsp; 

"We have over 1,000 hotel rooms. We have over 65 restaurants. Our facilities are second to none. We are just thrilled to have you back.

Hosting the Shrine Bowl is about the commerce it brings to Hays, but Jacobs said it is also about the money the event raises for children's hospitals.&nbsp;

Curtis Hammeke, FHSU athletics director, said the Shrine Bowl is a great showcase of student athletes from across the state.

"More importantly, it's a great, great contributor to the Shriner hospitals and the mission of this program is something we all think very highly of and that's taking care of the kids."

🎙Post Podcast: After successful events, DHDC celebrating downtown businesses

"The RHID process is a marathon of meetings," Kim Rupp, Hays finance director, said during Thursday night's city commission work session, and it's again underway.

Commissioners discussed the financial incentives, including a Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID), that an Atchison developer is requesting of the city for the planned renovation of the vacant St. Joseph Catholic School, 210 W. 13th Street.

Justin Pregont, who is also the interim Atchison city manager, wants to redevelop the property into a 12-unit multi-family complex that would target moderate income housing. The project is estimated to cost $2.2 million.&nbsp;

Pregont told commissioners that in his spare time he has "fallen in love in doing real estate projects on historic buildings." The project is similar to one he completed in Atchison called 1913 Apartments that opened last July.

St. Joseph School, built in 1907-1908, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Because of the RHID request and historic registry status, additional requirements must be met for renovation.

 Pregont is also asking for&nbsp;federal and state tax credits, as well as a&nbsp;$360,000 Moderate Income Housing Grant (MIHG) from the Kansas Housing Resource  Corporation (KHRC).&nbsp;Only cities or counties can serve as the applicant for the MIHG.

An RHID is based on a housing needs analysis. The 2017 Hays housing study by the Fort Hays State University Docking Institute shows a deficit in multi-family housing, according to Toby Dougherty, city manager. "We have a negative balance of 87 units right now," he told commissioners.

Pregont estimates the RHID would generate
approximately $450,000 in revenues over the 20 years.&nbsp;

Pregont toured the multi-story limestone building earlier Thursday as the sale becomes finalized with the Salina Catholic diocese.&nbsp;

Although architectural engineering is not complete, Pregont is planning for&nbsp;eight one-bedroom 770 sq. ft.&nbsp; units with an average monthly rent of $925 and four two-bedroom 1,000 sq. ft. units for $1,150 a month. Each apartment will have laundry facilities.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Renters would be required to have a minimum income, between 60% and 150% of median household income. That would be approximately $30,000 to $96,000 annually for a single person.

"Our primary target would be retirees," he said. Pregont expects other residents would be teachers and medical employees.

Commissioner Ron Mellick noted the income requirements would preclude most Fort Hays State University students.&nbsp;

The RHID would capture all eligible incremental property tax revenues within the RHID. Those revenues would be used to reimburse the developer for RHID-eligible expenses, an estimated $1.78 million, on a pay-as-you-go basis for a maximum term of 20 years.

Since the property has been owned by a religious organization it has been exempt from property taxes, Rupp pointed out.

All materials have been reviewed by the city’s special legal counsel, Gilmore &amp; Bell, P.C.

Sandy Jacobs, mayor, said she is "extremely excited about the project."

"My two children went through grade school in that building, but more than that, my mother went to high school in that building.

"Not much has changed and nothing has changed in the exterior. We can pull out the old pictures of when Mother was in school," Jacobs said.

"The biggest thing me is how it's going to enhance downtown, having more people live in what we consider that district."

Having workforce professionals living there "is going to be a great asset to us," she added.

Jacobs thanked&nbsp;Pregont for making an investment in Hays. He, in turn, thanked the city.

"I work for a city so I understand the other side of this. I understand how important revenue is for cities," Pregont replied.

"To me, it's truly a gap-filler here.&nbsp;

"Without the incentives, I don't have a project, so I appreciate your openness to considering the request."

Commissioner Shaun Musil was absent from the work session.

Approval of the local RHID request and support of the state MIHG application will be voted upon at the Sept. 23 city commission meeting.&nbsp;

Prior to the work session, Mayor Jacobs proclaimed Sept. 17-23 as U.S. Constitution Week in Hays and posed for pictures with members of the local&nbsp;Courtney-Spalding DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Chapter.

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays Post"The RHID process is a marathon of meetings," Kim Rupp, Hays finance director, said during Thursday night's city commission work session, and it's again underway.Commissioners discussed the financial incentives, including a Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID), that an Atchison developer is requesting of the city for the planned renovation of the vacant St. Joseph Catholic School, 210 W. 13th Street.Justin Pregont, who is also the interim Atchison city manager, wants to redevelop the property into a 12-unit multi-family complex that would target moderate income housing. The project is estimated to cost $2.2 million.&nbsp;Pregont told commissioners that in his spare time he has "fallen in love in doing real estate projects on historic buildings." The project is similar to one he completed in Atchison called 1913 Apartments that opened last July.<figure>

 </figure>St. Joseph School, built in 1907-1908, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.Because of the RHID request and historic registry status, additional requirements must be met for renovation. Pregont is also asking for&nbsp;federal and state tax credits, as well as a&nbsp;$360,000 Moderate Income Housing Grant (MIHG) from the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation (KHRC).&nbsp;Only cities or counties can serve as the applicant for the MIHG.<figure>

approximately $450,000 in revenues over the 20 years.&nbsp;Pregont toured the multi-story limestone building earlier Thursday as the sale becomes finalized with the Salina Catholic diocese.&nbsp;Although architectural engineering is not complete, Pregont is planning for&nbsp;eight one-bedroom 770 sq. ft.&nbsp; units with an average monthly rent of $925 and four two-bedroom 1,000 sq. ft. units for $1,150 a month. Each apartment will have laundry facilities.&nbsp; &nbsp;Renters would be required to have a minimum income, between 60% and 150% of median household income. That would be approximately $30,000 to $96,000 annually for a single person."Our primary target would be retirees," he said. Pregont expects other residents would be teachers and medical employees.Commissioner Ron Mellick noted the income requirements would preclude most Fort Hays State University students.&nbsp;<figure>

Those revenues would be used to reimburse the developer for RHID-eligible expenses, an estimated $1.78 million, on a pay-as-you-go basis for a maximum term of 20 years.Since the property has been owned by a religious organization it has been exempt from property taxes, Rupp pointed out.All materials have been reviewed by the city’s special legal counsel, Gilmore &amp; Bell, P.C.<figure>

🎥 RHID process for St. Joseph School redevelopment will be 'a marathon of meetings'

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in August. This was unchanged from 3.8 percent in July and a decrease from 6.2 percent in August 2020.

“August estimates indicate little change in the labor force since July, resulting in no change to the unemployment rate at 3.8 percent,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “The private sector added jobs for the third consecutive month. Most of the gains in August were due to continued economic recovery in manufacturing and leisure and hospitality." 

The jobless rate in Ellis County fell a half a percentage point to 2.6 percent. Every county in northwest Kansas post an unemployment rate below 4 percent in August. Barton and Graham counties were the highest in the region at 3.7 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs decreased by 1,300 from July. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 2,900 from the previous month, while government decreased by 4,200.

“Private sector employers in Kansas added 2,900 jobs in August,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “With this additional growth, current estimates are only 3.1 percent below pre-pandemic levels. For comparison, U.S. job estimates for August are 3.5 percent lower than February 2020 estimates."

Since August 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 22,500. This change is due to an increase of 27,600 private sector jobs and a decrease of 5,100 government jobs.

Vernon "Vern" Gross for his years of dedicated and faithful service to Thomas More Prep-Marian in the maintenance and grounds department.&nbsp; He is a graduate of Schoenchen High School and served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952-1954.&nbsp; Vern married Jeannie Riedel on June 11, 1955, and they have three children, Steve, Scott, and Stephanie (Garlow) Gross.&nbsp; Additionally, they have five grandchildren, John, Shandi, Cj (Hathaway) Lehr, Sophia, and Juliet, and three great-grandchildren Holden and Avery Gross, and Louisa Hathaway.&nbsp; Vern worked in the oil field trucking business for 40 years and has been employed by Thomas More Prep-Marian since 2006.&nbsp; He spends a good part of each day during the school year taking care of the kitchen and dining room and fills in the rest of his time cleaning floors, painting, and general maintenance.&nbsp; Many times, Vern would work on weekends during the school year to clean and polish the floors in the hallways when the students weren’t around.&nbsp; He served as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church for 29 years and is a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Vern’s work ethic is admired by school faculty, staff, and students and he is a very positive role model.&nbsp; Vern has been a real blessing to Thomas More Prep-Marian and we thank him for his dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm.

Mark and Cindy Washburn for their deep commitment to TMP-Marian and the Hays Community.&nbsp; Mark graduated from Hoxie High School in 1975 and has a BS in Business Administration from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; He is a business owner and entrepreneur specializing in sales.&nbsp; Cindy graduated from Marian High School in 1973.&nbsp; She completed a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1977 from FHSU.&nbsp; Cindy retired after 39 years as an educator for St. Joseph School/Holy Family Elementary.&nbsp; They are members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, with Cindy serving as a Perpetual Adorer and Eucharistic Minister for the Homebound Ministry and Mark on the fundraising committee for the IHM building fund, counting the collection on Sundays and a member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Mark and Cindy helped establish the baseball/softball complex at TMP-M, served on the Sports Booster Club and Mark served on the budget committee for Catholic schools and Cindy on the TMP-M Alumni Board.&nbsp; Cindy is part of a five-generation family attending Hays Catholic Schools starting with her grandmother Mathilda (Dinges) Karlin, in the first graduating class of 1921 of GCHS.S&nbsp; Her father, Irvin Karlin was a 1942 graduate of SJMA and received the Point of Light Award in 1997.&nbsp; Mark and Cindy have one son, Dustin 2004 and his wife Emily and two grandchildren, Tessa and Rudy, who attend HFE.&nbsp; They have been co-chairs of ACE Auction and served on the ACE procurement committee and their service is beyond compare from working concessions, taking tickets, serving lunch, being a host family for border students at TMP-M to serving their parish as Eucharistic Ministers and Sacristans at IHM.&nbsp; We extend a huge thank you to Mark and Cindy for their many years of service and extreme generosity to the Catholic parishes, schools, and Hays community

 </figure>Vernon "Vern" Gross for his years of dedicated and faithful service to Thomas More Prep-Marian in the maintenance and grounds department.&nbsp; He is a graduate of Schoenchen High School and served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952-1954.&nbsp; Vern married Jeannie Riedel on June 11, 1955, and they have three children, Steve, Scott, and Stephanie (Garlow) Gross.&nbsp; Additionally, they have five grandchildren, John, Shandi, Cj (Hathaway) Lehr, Sophia, and Juliet, and three great-grandchildren Holden and Avery Gross, and Louisa Hathaway.&nbsp; Vern worked in the oil field trucking business for 40 years and has been employed by Thomas More Prep-Marian since 2006.&nbsp; He spends a good part of each day during the school year taking care of the kitchen and dining room and fills in the rest of his time cleaning floors, painting, and general maintenance.&nbsp; Many times, Vern would work on weekends during the school year to clean and polish the floors in the hallways when the students weren’t around.&nbsp; He served as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church for 29 years and is a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Vern’s work ethic is admired by school faculty, staff, and students and he is a very positive role model.&nbsp; Vern has been a real blessing to Thomas More Prep-Marian and we thank him for his dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm.<figure>

 </figure>Mark and Cindy Washburn for their deep commitment to TMP-Marian and the Hays Community.&nbsp; Mark graduated from Hoxie High School in 1975 and has a BS in Business Administration from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; He is a business owner and entrepreneur specializing in sales.&nbsp; Cindy graduated from Marian High School in 1973.&nbsp; She completed a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1977 from FHSU.&nbsp; Cindy retired after 39 years as an educator for St. Joseph School/Holy Family Elementary.&nbsp; They are members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, with Cindy serving as a Perpetual Adorer and Eucharistic Minister for the Homebound Ministry and Mark on the fundraising committee for the IHM building fund, counting the collection on Sundays and a member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Mark and Cindy helped establish the baseball/softball complex at TMP-M, served on the Sports Booster Club and Mark served on the budget committee for Catholic schools and Cindy on the TMP-M Alumni Board.&nbsp; Cindy is part of a five-generation family attending Hays Catholic Schools starting with her grandmother Mathilda (Dinges) Karlin, in the first graduating class of 1921 of GCHS.S&nbsp; Her father, Irvin Karlin was a 1942 graduate of SJMA and received the Point of Light Award in 1997.&nbsp; Mark and Cindy have one son, Dustin 2004 and his wife Emily and two grandchildren, Tessa and Rudy, who attend HFE.&nbsp; They have been co-chairs of ACE Auction and served on the ACE procurement committee and their service is beyond compare from working concessions, taking tickets, serving lunch, being a host family for border students at TMP-M to serving their parish as Eucharistic Ministers and Sacristans at IHM.&nbsp; We extend a huge thank you to Mark and Cindy for their many years of service and extreme generosity to the Catholic parishes, schools, and Hays communityA full list of Point of Light Inductees is available at <a href="https://www.hayscatholicschools.org/page/pointoflight">https://www.hayscatholicschools.org/page/pointoflight</a>. TMP-Marian announces 2021 Point of Light recipients

The Hays Symphony will present "Western Hemisphere," its opening gala concert featuring works from American composers of the 20th century at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in the Fort Hays State University Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The ensemble is under the direction Brian Buckstead, assistant professor of violin and viola at FHSU.

The program features "The Canyon" by Phillip Glass, "Mysterious Mountain (Symphony No. 2)" by Alan Hovhaness, and "The Western Hemisphere (Symphony No. 5)" by William Grant Still.&nbsp;

Conductor Buckstead has programmed an evening of music that will lead the audience on a wonderful journey inspired by the beautiful landscapes in our natural world.

"The Canyon" opens with a single pitch echoed throughout the instruments of the orchestra inviting the listener to imagine plateaus hanging above a canyon below. The opening theme of "Mysterious Mountain" leads the listener up the side of a mountain through magnificent ascending musical lines. "The Western Hemisphere Symphony" invites the audience to imagine through music the vigorous natural beauty, nervous energy and overshadowing spirit of kindness we all experience living in the Western Hemisphere.&nbsp;

A reception sponsored by the Downtown Hays Development Corporation will follow the concert.

All Hays Symphony concerts are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance on the symphony’s website. Tickets may also be picked up in advance at the Hays Convention Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Hays Development Corporation, or at the symphony table in the lobby 30 minutes before the performance.

A Kansas man was sentenced to 480 months in prison for child pornography.

In May 2021, Clinton Wade McElroy, 49, of Ellis pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography after a prior conviction.

 According to court documents, McElroy admitted that between May 2020 and June 2020, he persuaded an 8-year-old child to produce sexually explicit images and send them to him through an online game and various messaging applications.

The FBI and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case. 
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart prosecuted the case. 


This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.

Ellis man sentenced to 480 months for production of child porn

NORTON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Thursday in Norton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Dodge Ram driven by Nicholas D. Esslinger, 20, Norton,was northbound on East 2 Road three and one half miles South of U.S. 283.

The pickup left the road into the east ditch. The driver overcorrected and the pickup entered the west ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Esslinger and a passenger Abby K.&nbsp;Armstrong, 17, Norton, to the Norton County Hospital. They were not wearing a seat belts, according to the KHP.

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie&nbsp;County farmer and rancher Last Sunday I was in church minding my own business when my occupation came under fire. Our church is without a pastor right now, and we rely on pulpit supply, so the preacher was a guest fill-in. The prayer he had prepared was one promoting environmental justice and in it we prayed to save our world from the overuse of harsh chemicals and the erosion of the soils brought on by agriculture. As you can imagine, that caught my attention. The pastor called on our church to take up the mantle of environmental justice. That carried with it a list of other issues I will not get into, but it also put a spotlight on global climate change and the effect agriculture has on it. I am Presbyterian, but the environmental justice movement was one promoted by the liturgy shared by many denominations. In our bulletin a small blurb promoted the environmental justice issue and indicated it was supported by several other churches including Catholic and Lutheran organizations. I would guess no matter what your religious affiliation you can find a link to this movement. Upon further research, and it did not take much, I learned one way your church could help save the environment was to limit the amount of red meat consumed because the production of red meat and the correlating grain production produced greenhouse gases. This is a tactic used by environmental activists that we know not to be true. Yes, the environmental movement has infiltrated even the most sacred space of the church. I am not trying to turn anyone against the church but rather I am saying as Farm Bureau members and as farmers and ranchers we must get involved to tell our story and let our fellow church members know what we are doing. We know we do not overuse “harsh” chemicals, and we do our best to retain and improve the soil. We all know we do our best to protect God’s creation, and now it is time to help educate our fellow church members. It is also time for us to get involved in the leadership of our churches at the regional and national levels so factual and correct information can be shared. If we do not tell our story others will tell it for us and we cannot let that happen. If it can happen in our churches it will happen in all other areas too. For that matter this charge should go for every other organization in our lives whether it be the Lions or Rotary and even the Chamber in our local towns and cities. We know as farmers and ranchers we are the best caretakers of all God has entrusted us with. We work hard to care for the water, soil and air we all rely on, we know that, but the challenge is to make sure our urban neighbors know the truth. I know I am preaching to the choir so maybe we all need to start preaching to the congregation.
