When the calendar turns to August, I&nbsp;find myself saying the same four words, “Where did summer go?” Families with kids adapted to a summer schedule filled with&nbsp;ball games, camp, swimming lessons, and&nbsp;4-H activities and now the schedule is about to change again! With the start of school just a few short weeks away it is the perfect time to call a family meeting and get everyone on board with the new routine.

​Research shows that kids ages 3 to 6 need ten to twelve hours of sleep each day.&nbsp;As youngsters begin pre-school or the early grades it is important to have a set bedtime with a routine that encourages success. Perhaps you want to target 8 p.m. as bedtime. If so you will want to begin the wind down process around 7. Perhaps a warm bath and bed time story help your child to relax. Planning what will be worn the next day or eaten for breakfast also encourages a less hectic morning when the alarm goes off. Whatever you want to adopt as a routine, now is a good time to start working toward your final goal.&nbsp;If the summer schedule has been lax, start moving the bedtime up a few minutes each day until your target is reached. That should help make the first day of school a success.

​One of the most important messages I like to share at this time of year is to “Eat breakfast every day.” &nbsp;As kids start back to school they need to start each day with some nutritious food in their stomachs. &nbsp;It’s really brain food. &nbsp;Countless studies have shown that kids perform better in school, and are less irritable, when their day starts with breakfast.

​There is no doubt about it: our bodies need to refuel after not eating for 10-12 hours. &nbsp;So why is it that breakfast is the meal most often skipped? &nbsp;The most common answers I hear are that “there isn’t time” or “my kids aren’t hungry in the morning.”&nbsp;

As you plan to start each day with breakfast, keep in mind the following tips. &nbsp;Breakfast does not have to be a big meal. &nbsp;Try to include something from the grain group as well as a fruit. &nbsp;Breakfast does not have to be traditional. &nbsp;Be creative; nutritious foods are healthy any time of the day. Last night’s leftovers can be reheated in a hurry. &nbsp;Peanut butter can be spread on a piece of whole grain toast and served with a glass of 100% fruit juice. &nbsp;Equal amounts of juice, milk and yogurt can be combined for a smoothie like treat. Get your day off to a great start and be a breakfast eater!

​And finally, if you live close enough to school can your children safely walk or bike to school? Research shows that starting your day with some physical activity (i.e. walking to school) encourages better concentration and behavior in the classroom.&nbsp;If your schedule allows it, do a trial run with your child; either walking or biking on a safe route to the front door of the school.​

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 63 new COVID-19 cases had been identified in Ellis County from July&nbsp;23 to 29.

KDHE reports updated case numbers weekly on Wednesdays.

Nearly the entire state is now in the high-incidence classification (see map below). Cheyenne, Decatur, Gove&nbsp; and Wichita counties are in the moderate classification, while Wallace, Ness and Graham counties are in the substantial-incidence classification.

KDHE: 63 new COVID cases in Ellis Co. this reporting period

PHILLIPS COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Friday in Phillips County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Kenworth trash truck driven by Dennis W. Brown, 64, Phillipsburg, was westbound on Mohawk Road just west of 100 Road.

The truck veered into the north ditch, overturned and came to rest on the passenger side.

EMS transported Brown and a passenger Douglas E. Koester, 64, Phillipsburg, to the Phillips County Hospital. They were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after NW Kansas trash truck crash

A minor earthquake was reported earlier this week in Rooks County.

The 2.0-magnitude temblor was reported at 4:09 p.m Monday. The epicenter was just east of Plainville in southern Rooks County.

Ellis County will have two new commissioners in January, but who those two individuals will be is still to be determined following Tuesday’s
Republican primary.

The race for District 1 Ellis County commissioner between Michael
Berges and Jim Pfeifer was separated by just nine votes (838-829) following Tuesday’s
election.

In the race for District 3, Nathan Leiker leads Chris McGowne
by 126 votes (758 to 632).

Ellis County Election Officer and Clerk Bobbi
Dreiling said there were 136 provisional ballots that must be verified by staff
before they can be accepted at the Aug. 15 election canvass.

Dreiling’s office has also received a handful of mail-in
ballots that will be added to the totals.

With those ballots still yet to be counted, both races are extremely
close with the race between Berges and Pfeifer still to close to call.

Berges said this week he really has not put a whole lot of
thought into the final outcome with the canvass still days away.

“I always figured Jim was probably the favorite going into
it, everybody seemed to know him,” Berges said. “Looking at past primaries, I
figured I was going to need about 700 votes, probably more than that. So
getting 800, I guess I’m thankful that that many people think I’m a quality
candidate.”

Berges said he was happy about the large voter turnout as
well.

“Either of us are fine candidates. I don’t think the county
is necessarily better or worse with either one of us,” Berges said. “We had two
quality candidates, and it was very close, and we both got over 800 votes.”

Pfeifer said it was an exciting race, and she’s looking forward
to the final results.

“Either way it goes, it was exciting how many people came
out and voted,” Pfeifer said. “There was lots of support on both sides, and
whoever wins, wins. Ellis County will move forward.”

He added, “I think Ellis County will be in good hands either
way.”

The First District represents the northwest part of Ellis
County, including the City of Ellis and a portion of Hays. Current District 1
Commissioner Butch Schlyer chose not to seek re-election.

The race for the Third District is not as tight but still undecided.


The Third District includes the entire eastern edge of
Ellis County and an area north of Hays.

Leiker said he was excited to see the great voter
turnout and was surprised by the results.

“I appreciate all the support and the trust that the people
have put in me so far, and I look forward to the results after the canvassing,”
Leiker said. 

Leiker praised McGowne and said it was a good race between
the two.

“It was exciting and nerve racking at the same time. I didn’t
know where things were going to fall out at,” Leiker said. “I’m happy to be on
top at the end of the day, and I look forward to working for the county.”

Incumbent Joe Leroux, who was appointed to the position in January,
finished fourth in the voting.

No Democrats filed for either commission seat, so the winners
of both Republican primaries are considered the presumed nominees. Barring a
successful challenge by an independent candidate in the November general
election, the new commissioners will take their seats on the commission in January.

The election canvass will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 15 at
the Ellis County Administrative Center, 718 Main.

The Center Stage Theatre camp allows individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to be recognized for just being themselves.

Annie Wasinger, 19, a sophomore at Wichita State University and Hays native, is in her fourth year of running the camp.

"For me camp is the one place where you can show up and people perceive you in the exact way you want them to," Wasinger said. "That is so rare for me. ...

"Especially for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they're never on that page where other people's perceptions of them is on their terms. People are always going into situations with them with preconceived notions or stereotypes or they want to interact with them so they can feel better about themselves."

Wasinger said there is an energy in the room during camp.

"It is as if you walk in and a weight is lifted off of you and you can be anyone you want to be, you can say anything, you can do anything. You are going to be fully accepted," she said.

&nbsp;"We all ride this wave of mutual care and attention to each other. I think being a part of that as a community member and coming to see [the performance] is important."

The camp, which has been ongoing since Monday, will culminate with a free public performance at 6:30 tonight at Celebration Community Church.

The camp participants will perform a one-act play, written by Wasinger, titled "Sunburst Talent Search."

Several campers will impersonate their favorite musical artists as part of the performance.

The performance will also include shorter skits, including one loosely based on "The Three Little Pigs."

This year the program has 35 campers, more than in any previous year. Since Wasinger founded the camp, the program participation has more than doubled.

"Everyone who is participating in camp — they really are my best friends," Wasinger said. 

This year instead of creating characters for the script, Wasinger tailor wrote many of the roles for campers she knew would be returning this year.

"It's been really nice to just build on knowing so and so really likes to talk about this. They would be a great newscaster or finding those places where people are at their most natural and they're happiest," Wasinger said. 

Camp sponsors include Gone Logo, Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, Kiwanis of Hays, Celebration Community Church and Wendy Stein.

Center Stage Theatre camp culminates in performance tonight

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly has announced that applications are open for the next Poet Laureate of Kansas. The Poet Laureate of Kansas is an honorary position designed to promote the reading and writing of poetry throughout the state and is sponsored through the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC). The current Kansas Poet Laureate is Huascar Medina, a poet, writer, and performer based in Topeka.&nbsp;

“By preserving the legacy of the generations that came before us, inspiring artists of the future, and driving community and economic development, the Kansas Poet Laureate program is a shining example of the value of supporting local and statewide arts,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly. “I encourage poets across the state to apply to be the eighth Poet Laureate of Kansas.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Poet Laureate will serve a term of four years beginning January 1, 2023, and will contribute to the growth and awareness of poetry by presenting their own work and the work of others at public events, readings, workshops, and lectures throughout the state.&nbsp;

Three-day weather outlook

WICHITA - Brady Rose pitched a gem and the Hays Larks got some timely hitting and beat the Lonestar Baseball Club out of Austin, Texas 5-2 Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the 88th National Baseball Congress World Series at Eck Stadium.

Rose (3-0) pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. The Dallas Baptist product gave up two singles which resulted in a run in the bottom of the second. He retired the next 11 and 17 of the final 18 batters he faced.

Preston Tabor allowed a run on three hits over 1 1/3 innings relief. Wyatt Divis got the final two outs, stranding two runners on base to end the game and pick up his second save of the season.

After Lonestar (25-3) scored a run in the bottom of the second, the Larks answered in the top of the third when Hunter Rosson homered to left with one out.&nbsp;

The game would remain tied until the seventh when the Larks struck for two. Wyatt Divis and Dylan Dreiling both singled to open the inning. Brady Evans was intentionally walked after gaining a 3-0 count. Austen Jaslove then followed with a two-run single to right.

The Larks (37-9) tacked on two more in the eighth. After a leadoff walk to Jack Torosian, Wyatt Divis singled to left. He was forced out an second on fielders choice&nbsp; but Leo Jiminian and Cade Brown came through with RBI singles with two outs to push the lead to 5-1.

Lonestar scored a run in the eighth and had two on with one out in the ninth but couldn't get any closer.

Divis, who was the designated hitter after Ben McLoughlin missed the game because of food poisoning, went 2-for-3 at the plate. Rosson also had two hits with a homer and a double.

The Larks will play RMBL rival Liberal in the semifinals at 6:00 p.m. Friday. The Bee Jays advanced after a 6-1 win over the Haysville Aviators in Thursday's first quarterfinal.&nbsp;

The Bee Jays won the Rocky Mountain Baseball League title by two-games over the Larks this summer. The two split their four games with all four decided by two runs or less.

⚾ Larks defeat Lonestar to advance to NBC World Series semifinals

A former Ellis County District Court Administrator was charged with nine counts of felony identity fraud after allegedly using electronic signatures to sign performance evaluations for court staff, according to the charging affidavit, which was released Wednesday.

According to the affidavit, Amanda Marie Truan's alleged use of the electronic signatures was discovered during an Office of Judicial Administration audit in October. 

Truan is no longer an employee of the judicial district.

The employees were not aware nor did they authorize the submission of the evaluations or the use of their electronic signatures on the evaluation, according to the affidavit.

Kayla Acosta, who became the Ellis County District Court Clerk in May 2021, told investigators she did not recall having an evaluation since 2018.

The employee evaluations are used as performance indicators for each employee by the Office of Judicial Administration. The employee's evaluation has a direct effect on the employee's job and whether the employee will receive any type of wage enhancements or promotions. 

Each count of identity fraud is punishable by up to 23 months in prison and/or up to a $100,000 fine.

The case is being prosecuted by the Kansas Attorney General's Office.

Truan
 has bonded out of jail and is scheduled to appear in court for a status
 conference at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in Ellis County District Court.

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Russell County Area Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS a grant for $1,000.&nbsp;

The grant awarded will support the Smoky Hills PBS’ literacy leadership initiative in Russell County and will support the following:&nbsp;

The Smoky Hills PBS Book Distribution program provides books each year to Head Start and&nbsp;other early education programs across central and western Kansas through the funding of many foundation partners throughout Kansas. Encouraging a love of reading at a young age is an important aspect of educational development and that serves as the basis of why Smoky Hills PBS provides its book distribution program each year.

The second component of the SHPBS Literacy Leadership Program is children’s programming on Smoky Hills PBS (PBS KIDS).&nbsp; The funds received from the Russell County Area Community Foundation will also go to support 10 hours of safe, non-violent, educational children’s programming every weekday on SHPBS.&nbsp; Parents can be assured that when their kids are watching PBS KIDS, they are learning.

Since 2001, Russell County Area Community Foundation has built stronger communities and helped donors make a difference through charitable giving in Russell County.&nbsp; Each year, the foundation distributes thousands of dollars back to our region through community grants.

Smoky Hills PBS serves 71 counties in central and western Kansas.

Cathy Hopkins issued the following statement after defeating incumbent Jean Clifford of Garden City in the District 5 Republican primary for the Kansas Board of Education on Tuesday.

Hopkins does not face a challenger in the general election.

As the books close on the 2022 Kansas Primary for the State Board of Education District 5 Seat, I would like to take this opportunity to thank every person who helped make my campaign a winning one for Kansas kids, parents and teachers.

I want to thank those that invited me to their towns, their parades, planted signs, did endless calling on my behalf, and most importantly, prayed. I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by so many good people.

The results of this election were a referendum on the need for transparency and the need to focus on academic achievement that will give our kids the tools to succeed in life.

Achievement scores tell the story and parents, as well as teachers, know we are veering off the path of Kansas Values. I see this job as a partnership with the families of northcentral and western Kansas and our teachers who want our children to have those opportunities to achieve their biggest dreams.

Those opportunities will not happen if Kansas education does not refocus on the importance of academics. Preparing our children for whatever path they choose after high school, be it technical training or college, will always be my number one focus. It is time to stop asking teachers to do the job of a parent and return their classrooms to an environment where the basic building blocks of learning are taught.

Parents, in the eyes of God and the Constitution of this nation, are solely responsible for nurturing, providing, and educating their children.

📷 Duck Derby raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County

HOXIE- The City of Hoxie is asking that all residents please keep your property mowed and trimmed and weeds sprayed.  

Pursuant to Ordinance 659 it shall be unlawful for any owner, agent, lessee, tenant, or other person occupying or having charge or control of any premises to permit weeds to remain upon said premises or any area between the property lines of said premises and the center line of any adjacent street or alley, including but not specifically limited to sidewalks, streets, alleys, easements, right-of-ways and all other areas, public or private.  

The City will be sending out letters advising that the owner. occupant or agent in charge of the property will be assessed a fine of $25.00 per day for a maximum of $250.00 if the owner does not comply with the notice.

Pursuant to Ordinance 659 it shall be unlawful for any owner, agent, lessee, tenant, or other person occupying or having charge or control of any premises to permit weeds to remain upon said premises or any area between the property lines of said premises and the center line of any adjacent street or alley, including but not specifically limited to sidewalks, streets, alleys, easements, right-of-ways and all other areas, public or private. The City will be sending out letters advising that the owner. occupant or agent in charge of the property will be assessed a fine of $25.00 per day for a maximum of $250.00 if the owner does not comply with the notice.Thank you.

Highway 183, bypass in Hays among reconstruction bids approved by KDOT

Divine Mercy Radio is gearing up for their&nbsp;12th&nbsp;annual Appreciation Banquet to be held in Hays on Sept. 10 and in Salina on Sept. 11. The guest speaker is Father Wade L. J. Menezes, CPM,&nbsp;of the Fathers of Mercy, based out of Auburn, Ken.​

​The banquet in Hays will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a meal and program. It will be held at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth.

​In Salina, the banquet will also begin with a social hour, but at 5 p.m., followed by a meal and program. It will be held in the Hall of Bishops at Sacred Heart Cathedral,&nbsp;118 N. Ninth.

​“We’re thrilled that Father Wade Menezes will be able to help us celebrate 12 years on the air,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Donetta Robben, executive director of Divine Mercy Radio. "Father Menezes is an excellent speaker, and he often gives the spiritual talks to us at the annual Catholic Radio Conference. He&nbsp;can be heard on Divine Mercy Radio&nbsp;at 2 p.m. each Tuesday,&nbsp;during the Open Line segment,&nbsp;where he&nbsp;answers&nbsp;any questions about the Catholic faith.”&nbsp;

​The title of his&nbsp;banquet&nbsp;talks&nbsp;will be, “In Defense of Truth and Faith: Our Catholic Calling.”&nbsp;

​Tickets are $55 if ordered before Aug. 20. After that, the price goes up to $60. No tickets can be sold after Sept. 1.&nbsp;Tickets can be purchased by sending a check to: Appreciation Banquet,&nbsp;Divine Mercy Radio, 108 E. 12th&nbsp;St., Hays, KS &nbsp;67601. Currently, they are raising funds to build KGOH, 89.1 in Colby.&nbsp;Divine Mercy Radio is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization relying on the generosity of its listeners.
