Society also schedules trivia night fundraiser

The Ellis County Historical Society is moving forward with two major capital improvement projects.

The society had mold treated in the basement of the brick church. The basement is undergoing remodeling, and Amanda Rupp, executive director, said she hopes to have the archives and offices moved back into the basement by Nov. 1.

An anonymous $25,000 donation was made at the begining of the summer to help make repairs to the brick church basement.

Once the main office moves back to the brick church, the stone church gallery, which is housing the Sternberg firearms collection, will be open the same hours as the office. The collection had been available only by appointment or during special events.

An accessibility ramp, which is being paid for in part with a Heartland Community Foundation grant, is also being added to the limestone church next door.

The society is applying for a Heritage Foundation grant to help pay for a $100,000 project that would repair the mortar and structural cracks in both churches. 

This should make the building watertight and allow the society to finish restoration to the basement rooms that have outside walls. Both churches would also receive new gutters.

Part of the money for the mortar repairs will come from what is left of a donation from the Blender sisters that was designated for capital improvements.

The society will also sign a lease soon with the Victoria Community Coalition to rent space in Victoria's former nursing home.

The society will be using the front portion of the building. The roof over the society's portion of the building will be replaced soon. The society hopes to use the second floor for storage. 

The bottom floor will be a gallery space, featuring the Volga German heritage of Ellis County, including the county's historical Catholic churches and small farm communities.

Rupp said she hopes the society could start moving items into storage in Victoria by the end of the year. It may be a year before the gallery space is ready for guests.

Rupp said the society continues to fundraise for the Victoria project but has already had significant donations dedicated to the project.

The Hays campus will feature the Wild West history of the area.

"I think we have enough interest and support for both of them that those who are interested in the Volga German heritage can help us in that realm and those who want to be more involved in the Wild West history of the Hays can help there," Rupp said.

In the past, what was featured in the museum largely depended on whom was leading the board and their interests, she said.

The society has enough artifacts to support the telling of both stories, Rupp said.

"We have a really energetic board that is doing some great fundraising, and I think they can put in all the extra hours that are going to be needed to basically build this thing back up," she said.

Rupp said it is an exciting time to be part of the historical society.

"I tell people it's not starting from scratch, it's starting from scrap," she said. "We have the collection. We just now have to have a place to put it."

The society will have a Twist and Shout Trivia Night from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Hays Community Theatre. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Teams will be made up of eight people with an $80 entry fee per team. Fifteen teams will be accepted. 

There will be nine categories. Each team will have 30 seconds to answer. Team members will write answers on a dry-erase board. 

If you don't know an answer, you can buy your answer. If your team doesn't think it will do well in a category, it can choose to buy an opportunity to double its points in that category.

Between rounds, there will be physical challenges as well.

Prizes will be given to team members winning each category. Every member of a team will receive a prize if they win a category.

Prizes will be given to the team with top points using the least amount of&nbsp; purchased "cheats." Prizes also will be given to the team with the highest overall score that purchased the least amount of "cheats." The overall team winner will have their name engraved on a traveling trophy, and each member of the team will receive a T-shirt.

Prizes also will be given for the best team name and team spirit.

Door prizes will be offered and chili supper. The cost for the meal is $8 per person. Spectators are welcome. A cash bar will be run by members of Hays Community Theatre.

Early registration is due by Oct. 31. The registration fee will go up to $120 on Nov. 1.

Funds raised during the trivia night will be designated for operating expenses.

The society will accept monetary donations at any time. General donations also can be accepted through the society's website.

If you would like to make a donation to a specific project, Rupp said she is happy to accommodate those designations.

The society recently created an endowment fund with the Heartland Community Foundation. This will allow the society to grow its funds more quickly. It also allows the society to take advantage of non-cash donations. Rupp gave examples of a load of grain or an IRA.

Heartland is also part of the Dane G. Foundation network, which allows people to access free estate planning help if they agree to donate a certain amount of their estates to local charities, Rupp said.

"We have two large building projects, but I think people are ready for it because we have been sitting idle for a while. The county upped our allowance, and the city upped our allowance, and I think we are really ready to get up and rolling," Rupp said.

HaysMed associates honored for years of service

When Eric Deneault, associate professor of applied technology, and former informatics assistant professor Dmitry Gimon began brainstorming five years ago about a collaborative project for FHSU, they were looking for a way to create cross-discipline synergies as well as a fun gathering place on campus.

“We wanted the project to be something that would motivate and encourage students to get involved with undergraduate research,” Deneault said. “Also, to showcase FHSU students’ content knowledge and skills through application and illustration of a physical model on campus for the community to enjoy and aid in student recruitment.”

Through many discussions with FHSU applied technology and informatics students, the pair settled on creating a unique charging station design. Informatics students developed schematics for the project and applied technology students did the design and construction work.

Deneault described the project as a recreational charging station utilized for outdoor entertainment while charging portable electronic devices. It boasts a dual-sided porch swing made of steel. The one-of-a-kind swing accommodates four people who can sit back-to-back. The energy created by swinging motion is transferred through a shaft to a sprocket which is then fed through a ¾ HP DC motor, creating energy that is distributed to the battery bank. So, as individuals swing, they are creating energy.&nbsp;

Solar panel technology is mounted to the roof of the station, with batteries charging to full capacity within an 8-hour timeframe. The goal, Deneault said, is to carry that energy through the night. Dusk-to-dawn lights will come on in the evening to illuminate the entire area for after-dark activities that might take place. The solar power technology will likely create 18-24 hours of stored usable power once the inverter converts the DC power to AC power.&nbsp;

Every semester for the past five years, Deneault has worked with an undergraduate research class finetuning the charging station, researching, writing proposals, presenting with students, and seeking publication through manuscript writing. In addition, he and the students have worked with a structural engineer to test the station’s live loads, dead loads, and wind loads, as well as a certified welding manufacturer to warrant safe operation so that the structure can be placed on the FHSU campus.

“It’s been a nice balance of research and application,” Deneault said. “Actually physically building this. We now have a one-off design that has been stamped and approved by a licensed engineer, which is pretty cool for our students to get the opportunity to go through the design/build process to see how that works in the real world.”

As far as a timeline for the project, it is anticipated that concrete will be poured this fall at a location south of the applied technology building. In the spring, Deneault hopes to mount and set the charging station so that campus visitors can enjoy the product.

Three-day weather outlook

Happy Fall! The past few mornings my bike commute has been so enjoyable. The cool crisp air reminds us that fall is here. In our world of Extension, October signals the beginning of a new program year. It is the perfect time to enroll kids in 4-H for the first time or re-enroll members through the online process.&nbsp;

Speaking of 4-H I want to remind you that we are looking for someone to join our team as the 4-H and Youth Development Agent in the Hays office. You can find more information about the application process on our Cottonwood Extension website. I hope you will share this information with someone who is passionate about working with youth in our area and encourage them to apply.&nbsp;

Since my retirement date is just four short months away, our Cottonwood District Board will be conducting a search for a District Director with community vitality programming responsibilities. That position description and application process will be advertised&nbsp;beginning October&nbsp;18th&nbsp;with interviews set for early December. The District Director serves as the administrative leader of the Cottonwood District’s budget and fiscal operations; personnel management of local staff; and overall program development and delivery.&nbsp;If you know someone with these skills encourage them to apply.&nbsp;

A couple of weeks ago I highlighted the upcoming open enrollment period for individuals with Medicare coverage. Appointments will be available in both our Great Bend and Hays offices, so just give me a call to set up a time. There is no charge for this service, and it really is a good idea to review your prescription drug plan each year. That way there are fewer surprises after the first of the year.&nbsp;

Another upcoming workshop that I will be leading&nbsp;is a&nbsp;ServSafe&nbsp;class&nbsp;for Food Handlers.&nbsp;This workshop is set for Wednesday, November 2nd, from 1:00 – 4:30 at the Great Bend office meeting room, 3007 10th&nbsp;Street. A $15 registration fee holds your spot and participants will receive an up-to-date manual and refreshments. Whether you are an occasional food handler at your churches’ soup supper, or you work in a food service-related job, this class is excellent. Participants will receive a certificate of completion to share with their employer.&nbsp;Class size is limited so call our office at (620)793-1910 to sign up.&nbsp;

KRUG: Fall Extension programming in full swing​

“I cannot live without books,” said Thomas Jefferson.&nbsp;

Stephen King described books as “uniquely portable magic” and “the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent.”&nbsp;

And author Jhumpa Lahiri wrote: “That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”&nbsp;

The benefits of books are now being discovered and shared in a new, independent bookstore in a rural community of Kansas. Jennifer Kassebaum is the owner of Flint Hills Books in Council Grove.&nbsp;

Kassebaum went to the University of Kansas and earned a law degree at the KU law school, where she met and married Bill Kassebaum. They now have a cow-calf operation on a ranch near the rural community of Burdick, population 62 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Kassebaum practiced law, worked as assistant general counsel at K-State and later at Wichita State before taking early retirement. As she thought about what she would like to be involved with next, one topic kept surfacing: Books.&nbsp;

“I always enjoyed books,” Kassebaum said. She thought about opening an independent bookstore. After researching the idea, including talking to several independent booksellers, Kassebaum leased a space in a beautiful former bank building in the nearby town of Council Grove.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The bookstore’s website states: “Flint Hills Books&nbsp;is a general interest bookstore nestled in the breathtaking grandeur of the Flint Hills.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The store is “where a deep love for the majestic Flint Hills and a passion for books collide.”&nbsp;

Flint Hills Books offers a curated collection of books, puzzles, and other activities and gifts. Kassebaum has simple but high standards for selecting books:&nbsp;&nbsp;“I include books I’ve read, books I want to read, and books that I think a good bookstore should have.”&nbsp;

There are bestsellers, new books, fiction, non-fiction, young adult books and more. Her store offers book-signings and a children’s section as well as cards, puzzles and gifts. The bookstore website has a section for audio books and online shopping.&nbsp;

Julie Hower, president of the Farmers &amp; Drovers Bank in Council Grove, pointed out that there has been a resurgence of woman-owned businesses in that community’s downtown.&nbsp;

For example, an independent coffee house named Watts Coffee is right down the street from Kassebaum’s bookstore, and a new brewery named Riverbank Brewing Company is on the other side of the street. There are several more.&nbsp;

These independent businesses have found ways to work together. Kassebaum partnered with Watts Coffee to produce a co-branded espresso-flavored gourmet chocolate bar. The label of the chocolate bar, produced by Sweet Granada Chocolate Company in Emporia, bears both the Watts Coffee and Flint Hills Books logos with the saying, “Because nothing is better than a good book and a great cup of coffee.”&nbsp;

Kassebaum is also partnering with Riverbank Brewing for a monthly event called Books &amp; Brews. That includes an evening social hour at the brewery where Kassebaum speaks about upcoming book releases. “I do as much locally as I can,” she said.&nbsp;

“Cami San Romani, owner of Cami’s Cakes and The Wooden Spoon, is an amazing baker whose artful cookies make bookstore events so special,” Kassebaum said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Lindsey Patnode, owner of Flowers by Lindsey, has helped me with elegant flower arrangements for special events.”&nbsp;

They let you travel without moving your feet.”&nbsp;The benefits of books are now being discovered and shared in a new, independent bookstore in a rural community of Kansas. Jennifer Kassebaum is the owner of Flint Hills Books in Council Grove.&nbsp;Kassebaum went to the University of Kansas and earned a law degree at the KU law school, where she met and married Bill Kassebaum. They now have a cow-calf operation on a ranch near the rural community of Burdick, population 62 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;Kassebaum practiced law, worked as assistant general counsel at K-State and later at Wichita State before taking early retirement. As she thought about what she would like to be involved with next, one topic kept surfacing: Books.&nbsp;“I always enjoyed books,” Kassebaum said. She thought about opening an independent bookstore. GREAT BEND – A Great Bend man has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his child in 2019, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Cody Lane Reed, 24, of Great Bend, was sentenced Wednesday in Barton County District Court by Judge Carey Hipp to 165 months on one count of second degree murder and 64 months for two counts of aggravated battery. The sentences are to be served consecutively in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility. Reed pleaded no contest to the charges in July 2022.

The case stems from the death of Reed’s 5-month-old child in January 2019. The case was investigated by the Great Bend Police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Nicole Southall of Schmidt’s office.

The 111th&nbsp;District forum will be at 6 p.m. at Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth. Doors will open for the event at 5:30 p.m.

The forum will feature incumbent Barbara Wasinger, a Republican, and challenger Edward Hammond, a Democrat.<a></a>

The forum is sponsored by The Chamber in Hays, The American Democracy Project at Fort Hays State University, FHSU’s Political Science Department, the Docking Institute of Public Affairs and Tiger Media Network.

“There is no greater liberty as an American than exercising one’s right to vote,” said Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of The Chamber. “The Chamber in Hays, Kan., encourages all 111th&nbsp;District constituents to attend this forum to be informed on both candidates and issues.”

Moderators for the forum will be Tim Carpenter of the Kansas Reflector and Pilar Pedraza of KAKE News. Both have spent numerous years covering the statehouse in Topeka.

The event is scheduled to last approximately one hour.

“The Grow Hays MicroFactory will be an incubator for small and startup manufacturing companies" said Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays Inc. 🎙 Groundbreaking for Hays microfactory set for next week

OPEC+ nations, where Saudi Arabia is the prime mover,&nbsp;recently&nbsp;announced they would cut oil production by 2 million barrels per day starting in November.&nbsp;Saudi officials said the cut is motivated by the concern over the global economy.&nbsp;OPEC countries are seeking to boost their budgets to cope with rising food prices and the strong dollar.&nbsp;

The Saudis are underscoring the folly of President Biden’s limits on oil production, and his non-emergency release of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve.&nbsp;Last July, Biden traveled to Saudi Arabia to beg the Crown Prince for help containing surging U.S. gasoline prices.&nbsp;Biden administration officials spent days in a frantic lobbying effort to persuade Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members to change course. &nbsp;

For Biden, OPEC’s decision to cut production is a blow.&nbsp;It is a personal rebuff to a president who had vowed during his election campaign to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah," only to seek to patch up relations this year in the hope of securing higher oil supplies.&nbsp;

High&nbsp;gasoline prices were a Biden administration policy choice, not an unavoidable accident.&nbsp;First a pipeline bringing oil from Canada to the U.S. was quickly canceled.&nbsp;Then, new leasing for energy development on federal acreage was stopped.&nbsp;Added to that was a batch of proposed punitive, unnecessary, and burdensome regulations on oil and gas operations.&nbsp;These actions have severely hampered American oil and gas companies’ ability to adequately supply the market.&nbsp;These short-sighted energy policies result in higher energy costs that disproportionately harm low-income groups.&nbsp;

U.S. energy policies that restrict domestic production force our country to seek relief from foreign suppliers of energy.&nbsp;The problem is that when certain foreign governments control your energy, they have the power to use it for their own purposes, not yours.&nbsp;America should not be in the position of asking for foreign energy supplies, especially when we have abundant resources produced to standards that are among the highest in the world, right here at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

While claiming to fight to bring energy prices down, President Biden has made the wrong move at every turn.&nbsp;Nothing less than a total reversal of his approach is necessary.&nbsp;President Biden should embrace American oil and gas exploration and production.&nbsp;Then we would not have to beg people in the Middle East or Russia to help us and Putin would not have the financial reserves to subsidize an invasion.&nbsp;

It is surprising that President Biden thought Saudi Arabia would increase oil supplies.&nbsp;The Biden administration came into office deriding Saudi Arabia and what it called “the Saudi war in&nbsp;Yemen.”&nbsp;More correctly, that war is the Iranian-fostered Houthi war in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, in which Saudi cities and oil production facilities have been attacked.&nbsp;The Biden administration subsequently pulled American Patriot Missile batteries out of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and some from Jordan, leaving those countries exposed to increasingly long range and accurate missiles supplied to the Houthis by Tehran.&nbsp;In what universe would Saudi Arabia pump more oil, lower the price, and help the U.S.?&nbsp;

The most pressing risks facing the U.S. economy in the foreseeable future are unlikely to be those arising from climate change or an energy transition.&nbsp;Rather the factors to watch are more apt to be inflation, rising energy costs, and national security threats.&nbsp;The Biden administration is too focused on climate change to anticipate or deter these significant real threats.&nbsp;

President Biden and all federal and state policymakers should prioritize advancing American energy leadership with policies that encourage development of responsibly produced energy here at home.&nbsp;These policies should recognize the volatile world we live in and the long-term impacts of returning to the days of foreign energy dependency.

 </figure>For Biden, OPEC’s decision to cut production is a blow.&nbsp;It is a personal rebuff to a president who had vowed during his election campaign to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah," only to seek to patch up relations this year in the hope of securing higher oil supplies.&nbsp;High&nbsp;gasoline prices were a Biden administration policy choice, not an unavoidable accident.&nbsp;First a pipeline bringing oil from Canada to the U.S. was quickly canceled.&nbsp;Then, new leasing for energy development on federal acreage was stopped.&nbsp;Added to that was a batch of proposed punitive, unnecessary, and burdensome regulations on oil and gas operations.&nbsp;These actions have severely hampered American oil and gas companies’ ability to adequately supply the market.&nbsp;These short-sighted energy policies result in higher energy costs that disproportionately harm low-income groups.&nbsp;U.S. energy policies that restrict domestic production force our country to seek relief from foreign suppliers of energy.&nbsp;The problem is that when certain foreign governments control your energy, they have the power to use it for their own purposes, not yours.&nbsp;America should not be in the position of asking for foreign energy supplies, especially when we have abundant resources produced to standards that are among the highest in the world, right here at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While claiming to fight to bring energy prices down, President Biden has made the wrong move at every turn.&nbsp;Nothing less than a total reversal of his approach is necessary.&nbsp;President Biden should embrace American oil and gas exploration and production.&nbsp;Then we would not have to beg people in the Middle East or Russia to help us and Putin would not have the financial reserves to subsidize an invasion.&nbsp;It is surprising that President Biden thought Saudi Arabia would increase oil supplies.&nbsp;The Biden administration came into office deriding Saudi Arabia and what it called “the Saudi war in&nbsp;Yemen.”&nbsp;More correctly, that war is the Iranian-fostered Houthi war in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, in which Saudi cities and oil production facilities have been attacked.&nbsp;The Biden administration subsequently pulled American Patriot Missile batteries out of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and some from Jordan, leaving those countries exposed to increasingly long range and accurate missiles supplied to the Houthis by Tehran.&nbsp;In what universe would Saudi Arabia pump more oil, lower the price, and help the U.S.?&nbsp;The most pressing risks facing the U.S. economy in the foreseeable future are unlikely to be those arising from climate change or an energy transition.&nbsp;Rather the factors to watch are more apt to be inflation, rising energy costs, and national security threats.&nbsp;The Biden administration is too focused on climate change to anticipate or deter these significant real threats.&nbsp;President Biden and all federal and state policymakers should prioritize advancing American energy leadership with policies that encourage development of responsibly produced energy here at home.&nbsp;These policies should recognize the volatile world we live in and the long-term impacts of returning to the days of foreign energy dependency.Edward Cross is president of the Kansas Independent Oil &amp; Gas Association.

A generous $60,000 lead gift from Lorena Kellogg and her late husband, Wilmer, will initiate the construction of a new training center to accommodate the expanding Shotgun Team at Fort Hays State University. The training center will be built at the Hays City Sportsmen’s Club just north of Hays on the 183 bypass and I-70 and will offer a large meeting room, reloading room, and office.&nbsp;

Upon the Shotgun Team’s establishment in 2005, the group had only five members. Seventeen years later, the award-winning team’s roster boasts more than 30 members. While the co-ed team works hard, practicing a variety of shotgun events weekly and traveling across the country to competitions, the group prioritizes bolstering the sense of unity needed to be successful.&nbsp;

With members from more than seven states and representing sixteen different academic majors, the Shotgun Team members dedicate themselves to maintaining good academic standing despite a demanding practice schedule.&nbsp;

“One thing I enjoy most about the shooting team is the comradery and friendship that we all share and the want and will to succeed,” said Shotgun Team member Lane Sorenson.&nbsp;

“My teammates and coaches have pushed me to become an extraordinary shooter, and I am forever thankful for the memories and friendships that have been created in my five years,” said Sorenson’s team member, Hailey Zulkoski.&nbsp;

“The FHSU Shotgun Team represents and demonstrates many of the qualities this university is built upon; hard work, leadership, dedication, discipline, and the desire and willingness to succeed,” Assistant Coach and FHSU admissions counselor Jerrod Lies said.&nbsp;

No matter rain or snow, the Shotgun Team commits as much time as possible to improve their skills for the team’s good, even if it means shoveling the sidewalks clear of three feet of snow to practice at the Hays City Sportsmen’s Club three miles north of Hays.

This dedication has earned the team eight national championships and produces members who rank All-American status at ACUI national competitions.&nbsp;

“This group of young FHSU students who represent the Shotgun Team and Fort Hays State has amassed an incredible array of accomplishments,” head coach, Duane Shepherd, said.&nbsp;

“Their commitment toward professional development and the shotgun program has furthered the mission of Fort Hays State and the Shotgun Team to a national level of recognition,” he adds. “Fort Hays State’s Shotgun Team has been a national powerhouse for years, and it’s time they have a facility that reflects their success.”

The team continues to welcome new members thanks to their growing national recognition and the low tuition offered at Fort Hays State. Each summer, team members travel across the Midwest to talk about the group and its importance in their lives.&nbsp;

Last summer’s journey resulted in contacts across nine states, including young shooters, parents, coaches, and event coordinators. As the team continues to grow, so does the need for additional space. Thanks to the support from Lorena and her late husband Wilmer’s lead gift, the new home of the FHSU Shotgun Team will be constructed at the Hays City Sportsmen’s Club. &nbsp;

The center will provide office and meeting space for team members and coaches, as well as storage for supplies and equipment. Additionally, the new training center will offer shooting simulation and allow for on-site reloading equipment.

“I am excited to see the program excel with the construction of the new building. It will help enhance the program and hopefully help with future recruitment,” Zulkoski said.

Wilmer and Lorena’s contributions to FHSU include their membership in the Wooster Society, a group of individuals who have arranged gifts to the FHSU Foundation through planned giving, and as Difference Makers, those who have strengthened Tiger Athletics by giving a minimum of $5,000 annually to athletic programs.

While the Kellogg’s lead gift provides the funding necessary to begin the project, community support and amplification will ensure the team receives the funding needed to make the center a reality.&nbsp;

Kelloggs invest in FHSU Shotgun Team success

Beginning Friday, three of Hays’ most beloved annual traditions will combine into one busy Hays weekend.

<a target="_blank" href="https://hayspost.com/posts/421edd4a-0395-4d03-aa71-0931e910e2dc">FHSU homecoming activities are set to begin Thursday and will wrap up as FHSU football faces Washburn, with pregame ceremonies kicking off at 6:30 p.m.</a>

“There are lots of events on campus for the students and the campus community,” said Carolyn Tatro, FHSU Alumni Association alumni engagement strategist. “But I would definitely say a lot of Homecoming, really, it gets started on Thursday.”

The Homecoming Golf Tournament will begin the day at 8:30 a.m. at Smoky Hill County Club, 3303 Hall. Lunch with FHSU Football Head Coach Chris Brown follows at noon.

The Tiger Bonfire is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the east lawn of the Robbins Center. Food trucks are planned to be available during the event.

On Friday, the Half-Century Luncheon, class reunions and the Alumni and Friends Banquet will bring FHSU alumni together.

“I think one of my favorite things about the Alumni Awards is that we're picking people that have done some really amazing things, some of them we've never heard about, but we're really impressed by them,” Tatro said. “We just don't talk about them a lot, and we're so impressed by their stories.”

As both academic institutions continue celebrating students and alumni, Hays’ annual celebration of history, heritage and homecoming — Oktoberfest — will present two full days of events.

This year’s Oktoberfest carries the special distinction of being the 50th anniversary.

“Not everybody is lucky enough to say that they've got any successful event that's been going 50 years,” Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Melissa Dixon said.

The festivities begin with the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in Municipal Park at First and Main and the ceremonial tapping of the keg.

Until 7 p.m., attendees will have various activities and food options available that reflect the Volga German heritage, including a Stein Hoist, Deutsch Hops Contest and the OktoberFEAST Contest.&nbsp;

Music will also be featured throughout the day.

“Of course, we're gonna have the Joe Dolezal band doing polka,” Dixon said. “But we're also going to have some country bands so people can hang around and dance. Rice County Line will be there. And then also Jimmy D and the Fabulous Destinations.”

Area vendors and groups will also be a large part of the festivities.

“We do have a lot of student organizations that are gonna be down there doing fundraisers,” Dixon said. “And I like the fact that when Oktoberfest started, years and years and years ago, it was a big harvest celebration. All the villages came around all the church ladies made their goodies to raise money for their churches. And a lot of that is still in place.”

“Friday's vendors are reserved, their spots are reserved for nonprofits,” she continued. “So everything's really going to a good cause. You'll see some of your favorite civic organizations down there, and churches and student organizations raising funds. And then on the big picture, the Oktoberfest committee uses the funds raised Oktoberfest for scholarships for students who have Volga German backgrounds.”

Saturday’s family-friendly downtown events begin with the FHSU Homecoming Parade at 11 a.m., with an Oktoberfest Day 2 Welcome set for 11:45 a.m.

“Saturday, they really want to make it family-friendly,” Dixon said. “There are lots of games for kids that day. ... It really is for all ages.”

"We kicked around different items that may create some interest or fun, like a brat eating contest," Tom Bird, Oktoberfest vendor committee chair, said in June. "But when I started researching bierocks and found that it was more specific to the Volga Germans, in particular, western Kansas ... I thought, well, that would be unique."

He said the unique Volga German food is closely tied to the region and will be a draw to area residents.

“I'm excited to see how it goes,” Dixon said. “It has its own tent. The tent is already ready and it's really big.”

A cornhole tournament is planned at noon, along with children’s events, including Jammin Randy, a German Freeze Game, Pumpkin Pass and a Pumpkin Rolling Contest.

Oktoberfest will close at 6 p.m., just as FHSU Tailgating ramps up in the East Lawn of Lewis field after starting at 5 p.m.

“Then at halftime is when we will find out who our new homecoming king and queen will be,” Tatro said. “So, definitely stick around for that.”

While TMP-Marian senior Braydon Binder didn’t initially love
lifting weights, once he got started, it didn’t take him long to become one of
the best young powerlifters in the country.

Binder won a state title as a junior and, earlier this year, set a national bench press record.

Powerlifting is made up of three lifts — bench, squad and
deadlift (or clean in Kansas) and the athletes attempt to lift as much weight
as they can for one rep. Each powerlifter has three attempts to complete the
rep until they reach their maximum weight.

at state, and said before his freshman year of high school weightlifting
wasn’t something he was too interested in. “I was never really like, a big guy,” Binder said. &nbsp;“I was trying to put muscle on. So, I
originally just started getting into the gym just trying to do what I could do
and then I discovered powerlifting was a thing, and it was kind of something I
got interested in.”<figure>

 </figure>As a junior, Binder claimed the 2A state title at 132 pounds.
Nationally, he completes in the 60-kilogram&nbsp; weight class and 132 pounds in
Kansas. At last year’s state championship meet, he recorded the top
weight in the bench press (215lbs), the second best mark for the squat (305lbs)
and was third in the clean (180lbs) for the top overall score.He holds several school records at TMP-Marian and state
records in the junior division of the United States Powerlifting Association.Binder set the national record in bench in the 16-17 age
division last month at the Battle of the North in Mason City, Iowa, with a
successful lift of 105 KG (231lbs). He said when he started competing in powerlifting, he did
not think setting a national record was something he could achieve. “Showing everyone that if you have the dedication and you're
willing to put in the work, anything's possible,” Binder said.<figure>

 </figure>He also had a squat of 147 KG (320lbs) and deadlifted 170 KG
(374lbs) at the meet in Mason City.Binder said he also has his eyes set on trying to break the
national squat record.TMP wrestling and powerlifting coach Austin Tatro said that
while Braydon might not fit the prototypical powerlifter body type, he makes up
for it with his mentality.“Brayden very much does not fit into what you would
typically of a powerlifter but what he does fit into is that mentality, that
mindset of I’m going to move this weight from point A to point B and I’m not
going to let something stop me,” Tatro said.&nbsp;Tatro also said that
they have seen his powerlifting training improve Brayden’s ability on the
wrestling mat.“Most people don't really get to shove me around on the mat
anymore because I'm stronger,” Binder said. “Part of it is getting him to understand how he can use the
tools that he’s built for himself,” Tatro said. “Toward the end of last year,
we really started to put that together.”Binder said he has continued to see the interest in powerlifting
increase at the state high school level and even at TMP.The high school season in Kansas runs from December to March
while the nation season is all year round.Tatro said he has seen Binder continue to grow both physically
and mentally.&nbsp;“Realizing that just
because he may miss that mark this week , doesn’t mean that he is going to miss
the mark next week or next month,” Tatro said. “Getting that mentality right,
getting that headspace right has just absolutely catapulted his physical ability.”Binder said winning a state title as a junior and setting a
national record this year has only motivated him more.“Powerlifting, honestly, isn't a sport against each other. It
is a sport against yourself. It is going against your old version and trying to
break personal records,” Binder said. “I think I think powerlifting can
translate into life also how you always go against your old self and trying to
be the better version.”<figure>
