A 39-year-old Kansas man was sentenced this month to
more than 25 years in prison for raping a child in Ellis County.

According to court documents, Kenneth Geyer was arrested in January
and charged with five counts of rape for assaulting a child under the age of 14
between May 2018 and December of 2020.

In September, Geyer pleaded no contest to two counts of rape
and one count of aggravated criminal sodomy. 

As a result of the plea agreement, Geyer was sentenced this
month to 310-months in prison, according to Ellis County Attorney Robert
Anderson.

Geyer will be subject to lifetime post-release and lifetime
registration as a sex offender.

Man sentenced to 25+ years by Ellis Co. court for child sex crimes

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29,&nbsp; the Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit (El Co DEU) will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. 

This bi-annual event allows for the public to anonymously dispose of old, unused, unwanted, or no longer needed medications. 

The event will be held in the north parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th.

In April, 7,196 pounds of medications were collected in the state of Kansas, and since the beginning of this event, a total of 233,374 pounds of medications have been collected across the state and disposed of. 

The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit is encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.

Items that will be accepted are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Prescription medications can be disposed of in the original container or placed in a Ziploc bag.

Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

Drug Takeback Day scheduled this month in Ellis County

A Phillipsburg native and former teacher in Ellis, Agra and Great Bend has been named Young Alumna of the Year by York University in York, Neb. Adrianne
 “Annie” (Keesee) Johnson came to York University in the fall of 1997 
out of Phillipsburg. Annie majored in K-12 music education and 
was a member of the Concert Choir all four years at York and served as 
the alto section leader. Annie was an active member of Omega Phi social 
club which routinely won the Service Award for outstanding service to 
the campus and the community. Annie was broadly respected by her peers, 
evidenced by her selection as junior class secretary as part of Student 
Government in 1999-2000. Annie also fondly remembers being a part of 
Cocoa and Carols and Chamber Singers. After
 leaving York, Annie taught music in the small Kansas towns of Ellis and
 Agra. Annie went on to earn a master's degree from Wichita State 
University in special education music and also taught in Great Bend.&nbsp; Annie
 has been a consistent donor to the York scholarship fund for many 
years, giving back each month so other students can have the same 
life-changing experience she had while at York. In addition to that 
commitment, it was while teaching in Ellis, and a faithful member 
of the Hays Church of Christ, her humble life of service, love and joy 
caught the eye of Donald Kraus, an elderly farmer and longtime member of
 the congregation. Kraus would often hear Annie tell of her York 
experience, and it was that testimony and her faithfulness that led him 
to include York University in his will. That decision resulted in an 
estate gift of nearly $5 million dollars, providing restoration funds 
for the University’s Prayer Chapel as well as countless student 
scholarships over the years. Annie,
 who lives in Wichita, Kan., with her husband, Dr. Jared Johnson, and 
their children Lilly (11), Will (9), and Jemma (7), is being honored for
 her consistent dedication and outstanding support for her alma mater.

Former NW Kan. teacher named Young Alumna of the Year at Neb. college

TOPEKA — Governor Laura&nbsp;Kelly&nbsp;announced her administration is awarding&nbsp;nearly&nbsp;$2.4&nbsp;million to&nbsp;27&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;agencies, including in Ellis, Graham and Rush counties, to strengthen law enforcement, prevent crime, and support crime victims.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I&nbsp;commend the men and women of Kansas who uphold our laws&nbsp;and keep our communities&nbsp;safe,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants will provide our law enforcement&nbsp;officers and criminal justice agencies with the resources they need to fight crime&nbsp;and support victims.”&nbsp;

This funding comes from&nbsp;the Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council oversees&nbsp;the&nbsp;federal criminal justice&nbsp;funding made available to Kansas through the U.S. Department of Justice.&nbsp;The KCJCC membership is representative of the Governor,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Corrections, the Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A total of $2,379,652 was awarded to 27 agencies.&nbsp;

The most recent letter from the incumbent representative for the 111th&nbsp;District of the Kansas House purports once again to separate fact from fiction. Once again, however, she uses&nbsp;misleading language&nbsp;and&nbsp;obfuscation&nbsp;to hide this&nbsp;fact:&nbsp;whatever interests she represents, they are not the interests of her district.

In the case of&nbsp;Medicaid&nbsp;expansion,&nbsp;almost her entire case&nbsp;is misleading.&nbsp;She begins by&nbsp;saying&nbsp;“I am not against the idea of Obamacare expansion,” which is&nbsp;a masterful exercise in misdirection but&nbsp;meaningless&nbsp;to the subject at hand.&nbsp;It confuses the issue and allows her to continue to hide her stance&nbsp;on it.

We are not talking about expanding Obamacare. We are talking about&nbsp;Medicaid expansion.&nbsp;We are also talking about a potential annual boost of $17.5 million to the district’s economy. My opponent has never – not once – talked about the economic&nbsp;aspect.&nbsp;She only talks about it costing too much.

Expansion&nbsp;would&nbsp;broaden&nbsp;Medicaid so that in Kansas, as in&nbsp;38&nbsp;other states, it is&nbsp;available to people above&nbsp;an&nbsp;extreme&nbsp;level of poverty.&nbsp;Under the current standard, an uninsured parent with two children who makes $4 an hour, or more than $8,500 a year, makes too much money to qualify.

She pretends that the only reason she has&nbsp;twice&nbsp;voted against it –&nbsp;she missed&nbsp;another vote&nbsp;– is because the measures did not meet&nbsp;her&nbsp;three conditions: a work requirement; adverse effects on the disabled; and a trigger if federal support falls below 90 percent of the cost of Medicaid&nbsp;expansion&nbsp;in the state.

Yet all&nbsp;of the proposals to expand Medicaid, which she voted against,&nbsp;met two of her three conditions. The one condition that wasn’t met? The work requirement.

The reason the work requirement was not included and has been ignored by other states that&nbsp;once&nbsp;included it, is because recent actions by U.S. Circuit Courts and the U.S. Supreme Court made work requirements useless. States that did establish&nbsp;such&nbsp;requirements have reversed course.

So the work requirement is essentially moot.&nbsp;She doesn’t know this, or doesn’t want you to know this.

Or, perhaps, it could also be the case that&nbsp;she&nbsp;just doesn’t care.&nbsp;Her&nbsp;special interest backers, such as the Kansas Chamber of Commerce,&nbsp;don’t want Medicaid expanded, so she&nbsp;won’t&nbsp;vote to expand.

The next&nbsp;issue&nbsp;is Fort Hays State University&nbsp;funding, and her supposed support for another of the largest economic engines&nbsp;in&nbsp;our district. Once again, her argument is misdirection. She cites&nbsp;a&nbsp;one-time&nbsp;expenditure of $5 million in Covid money – not state funding at all – to renovate Gross Memorial Coliseum.

What I have been talking about is basic state support for Fort Hays State University in the&nbsp;annual block grant, which&nbsp;is&nbsp;a major&nbsp;piece of the university’s budget. It is&nbsp;determined&nbsp;through a complicated formula.

My opponent misrepresents my position here just as she misrepresents&nbsp;her own.

According to the Kansas Board of Regents’ January 2022 State University Data Book,&nbsp;Fort Hays State’s FY 2020 grant was $39.43 million, after a&nbsp;calendar&nbsp;year in which&nbsp;FHSU served&nbsp;18,827 students. By contrast, Wichita State served 19,010, and its block grant was $85 million.

My position is that FHSU’s&nbsp;annual&nbsp;block grant – based on&nbsp;students served&nbsp;– should be somewhere between $20 million and $30 million more.

That would be fair and equitable,&nbsp;and that&nbsp;is what I will advocate in the&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;Legislature.

I am not, as my opponent likes to pretend, seeking the same block grant as Wichita State, which has costs that FHSU does not, including a highly regarded aviation program and&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;doctoral programs. I&nbsp;am not&nbsp;– NOT –&nbsp;seeking to cut WSU’s grant.

Fort Hays State’s&nbsp;block grant&nbsp;should&nbsp;be funded in an amount&nbsp;commensurate with our university’s value to the state&nbsp;and its citizens. That number is somewhere in the range of $20 million to $30 million more each year.

Here’s another fact: The only advocate on the ballot&nbsp;this year&nbsp;for the 111th&nbsp;District is me.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Transportation project involves crack repair on K-4 from the Ness/Rush county line to the junction with U.S. 183. The length is 19 miles.

During the work, expected to start around Oct. 26 and end around Nov. 18, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Scodeller Construction Inc., of Wixom, Michigan, is the prime contractor for the $244,807 project.

Crack repair on K-4 in Rush County starting soon

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 13 new COVID-19 cases had been identified in Ellis County from Oct. 8 to 14. KDHE reports updated case numbers weekly on Wednesdays.

Ellis County remained in the moderate-incidence category, KDHE reported. (See map below).&nbsp;

The latest government reports show demand for regular gasoline is dropping and supplies are rising. Thus the national average price for a gallon of regular dropped three cents last week, to $3.88 per gallon. Diesel prices continue to rise. The Energy Information Administration reports diesel inventories were down nearly five million barrels last week, and are about 23% below the five-year seasonal average. Diesel fuel deliveries are down nearly four percent. The average price for diesel at the pump nationwide was just over $5.27 per gallon last week, up 30 cents from a month ago, and a $1.74 higher than a year ago. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson dropped more than three dollars on Friday to start the week at $75.75 per barrel. That's up six dollars a barrel from the first of the month, but down more than seven dollars from a week ago. The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was up eight oil rigs. The count in Texas was up five; New Mexico was down four. The Rig Count in Kansas was up one west of Wichita at 32 active rigs. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported operators were preparing to spud new wells in Barton and Stafford counties on Friday. State regulators report slight increases in Kansas crude output, both statewide and in our area. Operators across Kansas pumped more than 11.5 million barrels through May, the latest numbers available from the Kansas Geological Survey. That's over 76,000 barrels per day. Barton County output is just under 4,000 barrels per day with production of 596,000 barrels through May. Ellis County pumped 905,000 barrels, or nearly 6,000 barrels per day. Russell County output through May stands at 545,000 barrels, or 3,600 barrels per day.&nbsp; The tally in Stafford County is 383,000 barrels or 2,500 barrels per day. Kansas regulators okay 21 new drilling permits. There are five new permits east of Wichita and 16 in Western Kansas, including one in Barton County and three in Ellis County. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 19 new well-completions last week, with ten in eastern Kansas and nine west of Wichita including three in Barton County and one in Ellis County. Operators have completed 1,256 wells so far this year, compared to 680 at this time last year. The government says U.S. crude stockpiles last week rose by nearly ten million barrels to just over 439 million, or about one percent below the five-year seasonal average. Gasoline stockpiles were also higher. But diesel inventories, and production, were lower. EIA reports average crude imports of 6.1 million barrels per day last week, up 100,000 barrels from the week before.&nbsp; U.S. crude production dropped below 12 million barrels per day last week for the first time in 12 weeks. But the oil patch posted the highest level of employment gains in the history of the quarterly survey. 'Hell's Aquarium': Science Café scheduled for Monday

PAWNEE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Tuesday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Toyota passenger car driven by Barbara N.&nbsp;Westeman, 60, Syracuse, was northbound on U.S. 183 eleven miles south of Rush Center.

The Toyota was passing a 2000 International semi driven by Nathaniel J. Dunlay, 40, Torrington, Wyoming, in a No Passing Zone. 

A southbound, non-contact vehicle, traveled into the west ditch to avoid a head-on collision with Toyota. 

Dunlay lost control of the semi as the vehicle traveled partially onto the east shoulder. He overcorrected, the semi crossed the roadway, entered the west ditch and came to rest on its top, facing southwest.

Dunlay was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Beckwith Mortuary. Westeman was not injured. Dunlay was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

I have learned over the years leading up to an election not to believe everything I hear. There is so much “fake news” floating around that people start to believe it as the truth.

While getting involved in the race for the 111th District House seat, I started listening to the stance of each candidate and started to realize the “smoke” Barb Wasinger’s opponent was putting out.

One of my pet peeves in an election has been a candidate never having a job where they had to generate a dime of their own money. Taking taxpayer money and spending it is not the same as having to generate business and live within their own means.&nbsp;

I feel candidate Wasinger has tried to stay within the budgets of education and Medicare. What I am hearing from Mr. Hammond is Wasinger has been “anti-” this and that, but all I have heard from his stance is spend more taxpayer money.&nbsp;

With inflation at an all-time high and fuel prices going up, I feel the last thing Kansas’s need are more taxes and, with spending, comes higher taxes because all this has to be paid for somehow.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the city of La Crosse&nbsp;public water supply system located in Rush&nbsp;County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on&nbsp;Oct. 18&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;KDHE&nbsp;officials issued&nbsp;the advisory because&nbsp;of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the&nbsp;distribution&nbsp;system.  Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;
