Hays USD 489 elementary school children were treated Tuesday to the story of a very friendly grizzly bear who lost his way — but managed to find new friends and gratitude.

Oklahoma City's children's author <a href="https://booksbydennis.com/">Dennis Mathew&nbsp;</a> sang to the children and read to them his book "How Grizzly Found Gratitude."

Mathew, 40, works full-time as a speech pathologist but spends his free time writing children's books and songs.

Mathew has written three children's books also including "Bello the Cello" and&nbsp; "My Wild First Day of School."

All of the students in grades kindergarten through second grade received free copies of "How Grizzly Found Gratitude" thanks to the USD 489 Foundation for Education Excellence.

"To me, it all comes down to helpings students find their voice," Mathew said. "Writing children's books is an extension of what I do as a speech pathologist. As a speech pathologist, I feel I'm helping students be seen."

This was Mathew's first school visit to Kansas, but he calculates that he has presented to at least 100,000 children across the nation either in person or virtually. 

He said he finds inspiration for his books through the struggles he had as a child and into his adulthood.

Mathew said students have gone through a lot during the last three years dealing with the pandemic.

"All the transitions that our students and staff had to go through that was trauma in big and small ways," he said. 

He said he uses some of the lessons he has learned to help children navigate those same challenges.

"I ask myself during these transitions that I've had to deal with if it's COVID-19 or whatever else, what are some things that have helped me get through those challenges? " he said.

"Gratitude is a big piece of that. I asked myself as a 40-year-old man were those challenging for me? How much more challenging are they for our littles who are 4 and 5 and 6?" 

In "Bello the Cello," Mathew writes about a cello who is finding his purpose on the first day of school. 

Mathew drew from his own experience on his first day of school.

"To this day, very vividly I remember bawling my eyes out as my dad dropped me off at school and he went to work," he said. "In my little mind, Dad was not coming back."

When he presents Bello to the children, Mathew, a self-proclaimed late bloomer, talks to students about finding their strengths.

"I talk to them and say, 'If you don't know what you are good at during this season of life, that's me also. Don't panic. Don't worry. Everything is going to turn out. Give yourself some time. Let life play its course out. Eventually, you will stumble upon what you are good at.' "

"My Wild First Day of School" encourages students to seize the day and pursue goals and dreams.

Mathew's books lean heavily toward addressing emotional issues with kids. The Kansas Department of Education has made social and emotional growth a part of the accreditation process for all Kansas schools.

"I think our young ones are living in an age where they have to grow up too fast," Mathew said. "I grew up in the '80s, and during the time I grew up in this world, I remember a very simple time where all I had to do was wake up and go to school. My needs were taken care of."

Mathew said he worries about his 3-year-old daughter and his son that is due in two weeks. 

"[Our kiddos] need to have a toolbox of strategies and techniques and tips that can help them navigate the challenges that wait for them even at a very young age," he said.

Reading skills also are important to enhance the trajectory of children's lives, Mathew said. Being able to successfully read a book is a high indicator of success in employment regardless of field, finances and relationships.

"It also sparks the imagination and helps children to envision a brighter future and see beautiful things through the eyes of their imagination," he said. "I think reading sets the onramp for all of that."

Mathew said he feels the greatest reward of his work is seeing children connecting with the characters in his books.

As a class of students in upstate New York was filing into a room in which he was presenting, he saw a girl out of the corner of his eye hugging a copy of his book, "Bello the Cello." 

"To her the character on the front cover of the book, Bello, she had built a very personal connection with this little character, so she was tightly squeezing this book like a stuffed animal," he said. ... 

"That moment meant a lot to me that this character that I created made a personal connection with a student who I had never met before."

Mathew is working on a chapter book, but a release date has not been set. He said he is a husband and father first so he often struggles to find time to write, but hopes to finish the text within the next six months

Author visiting Hays tells story of grizzly gratitude

Global Affairs and Civic Learning &amp; Engagement, two units in the Academic Affairs division at Fort Hays State University, will host a panel discussion on Jan. 24 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

The discussion will cover a range of topics related to campus-wide initiatives that are shaping teaching, research, and service at FHSU.&nbsp;

Panelists will include university faculty, staff, and students involved in key efforts associated with Goal 5 of the university’s strategic plan. This goal focuses on building impactful partnerships at all levels, including infusing a “think globally-act locally” element to the student experience, cultivating new local, regional, national, and global partnerships, and reimagining civic learning and engagement at the university.

The event will be held in the Black and Gold Ballroom in the Memorial Union Building and is open to the public.

Fort Larned announces holiday closure schedule

Living Well Wednesday is a virtual learning series hosted by K-State Research and Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences professionals from across the state of Kansas. The 2022 Series focused on a variety of essential skills that empower you and your family to live, work and thrive.

Recently, three KSRE&nbsp;specialists and&nbsp;Extension agents&nbsp;presented the program “Healthy and Prepared for the Holidays.”&nbsp;&nbsp;They&nbsp;came together to share tips on how to keep your menu simple and fun during this busy holiday season. The presenters shared how to prepare meals ahead of time, how to make healthy modifications to recipes, and how to repurpose leftovers. &nbsp;The presenters included:&nbsp; Christina Holmes, Extension Specialist; Ashley Svaty, Extension Specialist; and Melinda Daily, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Sunflower District.

In November, Living Well Wednesday focused on Coping with Loss and Loneliness During the Holidays. &nbsp;&nbsp;Melissa Atchison, Pastor, Manhattan Mennonite Church, presented on how sometimes the holiday season is a joyous time, but not for everyone. The presenter shares “you have permission to feel how you feel” and more in this helpful webinar. &nbsp;There are many resources listed for further exploration.

Finally,&nbsp;Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, Professor and Extension Specialist&nbsp;and&nbsp;Joy Miller, Johnson County Extension Agent presented on&nbsp;“Simplify Your Holiday-Focusing on What Matters.”&nbsp;&nbsp;As the holiday season nears, are you looking forward to it or do you dread the time, money and energy involved? THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Thursday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Chevy Silverado driven by Garret&nbsp; Cottingham, 30, Littleton, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 three miles east of Brewster. The pickup struck a 2013 Peterbilt semi that was abandoned and legally parked on the shoulder.

&nbsp;EMS transported Cottingham to Citizens Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents of the special care their outdoor pet needs during the cold weather.&nbsp;

State law requires that all pets who spend time outside have access to adequate shelter and fresh water.

"The best place for our pets is in our home but we know that is not always possible," said Sheriff Scott Braun.&nbsp;

"We encourage all pet owners to take appropriate steps to protect those animals that may be left outside for long periods of time. Our office is prepared to investigate reports of animal neglect throughout this cold spell.&nbsp;

A few tips to meet the cold weather requirements include maintaining adequate shelter - like a doghouse with dry bedding such as straw, or a structure such as a garage or barn, and food and fresh water.

SHERIFF: Law requires protection of outdoor pets during cold weather

At approximately 3:30 a.m. Thursday, the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire located at 309 W. 21st in Hays.

One of the occupants of the home noticed smoke in the living room and smoke around the fireplace. 

Upon arrival, fire crews found the fireplace hearth and the flooring underneath on fire. Crews quickly deployed a 1 ¾” handline to attack the fire. 

Crews were on scene for several hours, checking for hot spots and clearing smoke out of the structure.

An investigation was conducted after the fire to try and determine the cause and origin of the fire and is ruled accidental. 

The occupants of the home were able to return safely, as the home only received minor damage from the fire.

The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department all responded to the incident.

Hays Fire Department encourages everyone during this winter to be cautious when using supplemental heat such as fireplaces and space heaters. Always follow best practices and manufacturers' recommendations for use.

The Hays Fire Department would like to remind everyone to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are functioning correctly.

Winter arrived in wicked fashion Wednesday evening as Winter Storm Elliott blew into western Kansas, causing the temperature to plunge drastically in a matter of minutes.

But the National Weather Service in Dodge City is predicting the cold snap will be relatively short-lived. A high of 13 is forecast Friday, rising to 24 Saturday and 39 Sunday.

By Tuesday, though, the high temperature is now predicted to be in the low- to mid-50s.&nbsp;

Conditions will be partly to mostly sunny well into next week, the NWS said. No precipitation is expected for at least the next week.

ELLIS COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Peterbilt semi driven by Shane Slenning, 24, Post Falls, Idaho, was westbound on Interstate 70 five miles west of the U.S. 183 exit.

The semi began to slide off the icy surface then slid sideways and overturned.

EMS transported Slenning and a passenger — Bradley C. Sprague, 24, Clinton, Utah — to Hays Medical Center. Sprague was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The driver lost traction on the icy roads. The pickup crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2006 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Tyler J. Morrish, 23, Kensington. 

A westbound 2010 Kia Soul driven by Austin D. Doxey, 26, Kensington, struck took boxes that were thrown onto the highway from the pickup.

2 hospitalized after 2-vehicle north-central Kansas crash

A new mental health court program in Ellis County has grown to the largest in the state since it launched in March.

Some of the 14 clients may be able to graduate soon, said Gina Anderson, NAMI peer representative on the Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program team.

"We're seeing an increased number of participants who are following through and having success in maintaining recovery," Anderson said.

All of the clients in the program have chronic mental illnesses — usually bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. They have had difficulties maintaining stability in their recoveries. This could mean repeated hospitalizations, trips to the emergency room, run-ins with law enforcement, missing treatment appointments or inconsistently taking medication.

All of the participants in the program have a court order for mental health treatment. The participants meet with the treatment program team once a month during court hearings.

The team is made up of a judge, representatives of High Plains Mental Health Center, a National Alliance on Mental Illness peer support representative, an assistant county attorney and a defense attorney.

"I think it's really awesome how all of the different stakeholders have come together — the police department, the sheriff's department, corrections, the judge, the county attorney, the defense attorney — and are making things happen for these people," Anderson said.

Benito Riveria Madrid, assisted outpatient treatment liaison from High Plains Mental Health, gave the example of a person who he said he thought had been helped by the program.

The client was not taking medication consistently, had repeated psychiatric hospitalizations and interactions with law enforcement.

The client started with the court program in April. By the summer, the client began working with a treatment team at High Plains, started taking medication as prescribed and stayed sober.

"They have been engaging more in services," he said. "They went from not having anything to having a full treatment team and following through with everything.&nbsp; 

"They are in corrections and have not failed a [uninary analysis] since mid-summer. That speaks volumes to that person's success."

Most of the clients in the Assisted Outpatient Treatment program are also part of the Assertive Community Treatment program at High Plains.

The aim of Assertive Community Treatment is to help individuals with chronic mental illness reduce psychiatric hospitalizations and contacts with law enforcement and increase access to outpatient services.

Members of the ACT meet with the clients usually four times a week. These members include a nurse, therapist, peer specialist and case worker.

The program also seeks to help clients to achieve their personal goals, such as gaining employment, finding better housing and using community resources.

"We're providing an evidence-based practice that is proven to help those folks who have disengaged from services to receive the treatment that they are needing," Jessica Sherfick, assistant clinical director for community support services for High Plains Mental Health.

"Through ACT, they are receiving very intensive psychotherapy and rehabilitative case management. It is really focused on alleviating symptoms, working toward treatment plan objectives and goals that are set by our clients."

Anderson said she is seeing more understanding coming from law enforcement. 

Sgt. Brandon Hauptman of the Hays Police Department patrol division said law enforcement often has contact with people who are in crisis, but there has been a disconnect in getting that information to the court.

"We're interested in reducing the law enforcement contacts because we want to get them to the better services rather than a distribution in their lives or the public," he said.

He added, "This is about guiding them to treatment and improving their lives."

The police department has a list of everyone who is in the AOT program. If an officer has contact with a person in the program, the department tries to keep track of the outcome of that interaction.

In this way, the department can let the next officer know what tactics were successful in helping de-escalate incidents.

Hauptman gave examples. Some individuals like to have family members involved if they are struggling. Others don't. Some people connect well with a certain therapist or friend.

&nbsp;"If we have 30 officers and we are not communicating, we are not doing as well as we can."

Hauptman sees AOT as being a preventive program.

"I am so excited to have this information and have a better guide," he said. "Instead of it having to be a full-blown crisis before we can do something. We can hopefully get there before that crisis.

"That's fantastic. Let's prevent the fight or the crisis or the suicide attempt. Let's get some intervention."

Before AOT, Hauptman said law enforcement officers didn't have a lot of options to help individuals with chronic mental illnesses, especially in western Kansas. A person suffering from a mental health crisis might end up in jail for a criminal violation connected to their crisis.

"This is just a great opportunity for us to talk about this together to better help these individuals rather them ending up in jail," he said. "We don't want criminalize mental health issues."

Anderson said the team also works with screeners for the state mental hospitals and can provide background on the clients in the AOT program.

"They'll know if it's a hiccup or whether the bridge collapsed," she said.

Riveria Madrid said the program helps maintain these community members in a safe environment in the least restrictive setting.

"We want to give them a fruitful way of life," he said. "If they are interested in working, that's our goal. ... We wrap around them, truly, to improve quality of life."

Many of the clients had trepidation about the process but are starting to engage more with the AOT team and understand how their participation can give them a voice in their own treatment, Anderson said.

As a peer, Anderson said she feels a great reward from participating in the program.

"Those court days can be hours long, but I come away from them so exhilarated," she said. "We are not putting people in cuffs. We're not sending them to Larned. We're giving them hope, and they're grasping what recovery is all about.

"I think the most positive thing is that we are talking about recovery. We're not talking about their illness. What are you doing in recovery—positive. This is where you're headed."

Anderson said she thinks having a peer in the room helps clients. 

"I can say I have a mental illness, and this is what I have to do every day in my recovery," she said.

The program also encourages family members to be involved, Anderson said. Support for family members is provided by NAMI.

"I have gone out and sat with parents who were distraught because they didn't know what was going to happen to their child," she said. ...

"Parents who have gone through this with their [adult] children, they are tired. They're worn out. Some of them lack hope. That's where NAMI comes in and lets them know if they can let go a little bit and let the judge and the mental health center do their part and NAMI help you on the family side, we can build this structure that needs to be built."

In February, NAMI also will offer an educational program to the AOT clients as well as their friends and family members.

Anderson said the AOT and ACT programs are serving clients with the most critical needs. She said she could see the services growing, but more mental health workers would be needed to expand it further.

The Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program is being funded through grants from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services. The program only is being piloted in a handful of counties in Kansas.

Ellis County mental health court pilot sees success in first year

Dec. 18, 2017, was my first day as president of Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;Five years. Wow.&nbsp;As the fifth-year anniversary&nbsp;date approached, I&nbsp;took&nbsp;time&nbsp;to reflect on this wonderful journey of mission, community, setbacks and incredible success.&nbsp;I’ve built this reflection around five key themes that I think best describe my first five years as president.&nbsp;

Theme one: first&nbsp;steps.&nbsp;My first days were filled with awe. A&nbsp;homecoming, reuniting&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;faculty and staff&nbsp;I cared&nbsp;deeply&nbsp;about and&nbsp;for whom I&nbsp;believed with unwavering faith in their talents and dedication to serve our mission and students.&nbsp;

The inauguration was both a wonderful and humbling experience. I remember the difficulty&nbsp;I&nbsp;felt in adequately expressing my deep gratitude. I continue to feel extremely blessed&nbsp;to serve this&nbsp;university and community.&nbsp;

One thing that was very important to me was to do my very best to ensure that&nbsp;the&nbsp;inaugurationwas a celebration&nbsp;for&nbsp;all of&nbsp;us.&nbsp;We needed an inauguration&nbsp;that celebrated&nbsp;not&nbsp;one&nbsp;person but&nbsp;one that celebrated&nbsp;our&nbsp;institution. It was our opportunity to pause and reflect on the things that make Fort Hays State University so special: Our spirit of hard work. Our remarkable community.&nbsp;Our enduring legacy of innovation.&nbsp;And in the center of it all, our magnetic north: our students.&nbsp;That sentiment continues to motivate me to&nbsp;show up, work hard,&nbsp;and&nbsp;do&nbsp;my&nbsp;best every day.

The theme of&nbsp;the&nbsp;inauguration,&nbsp;Unlocking Untapped Potential, served as the focal point for launching our strategic plan. During the past five&nbsp;years,&nbsp;we have invested more than $2.5 million in driving our goals of academic excellence, student success, strategic growth, resources and infrastructure, and community and global engagement.&nbsp;My heart is abundantly grateful for the impactful work our campus is leading.

Theme two: &nbsp;a remarkable record of “firsts&nbsp;and&nbsp;greatests.” &nbsp;Throughout its 120-year history,&nbsp;Fort Hays State University has been blessed with a community that consistently rallied its support around her, a committed faculty and staff, engaged students, and a strong legacy of leadership.&nbsp;

All of these elements come together to create extraordinary results,&nbsp;which I have the fortune of sharing.&nbsp;Here are&nbsp;just&nbsp;a few: 19 consecutive years of enrollment growth;&nbsp;our first Barry Goldwater Scholar Brynn Wooten;&nbsp;the&nbsp;first NCAA school in Kansas&nbsp;and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA)&nbsp;to offer women’s wrestling as a varsity program in intercollegiate athletics;&nbsp;the first campus digital master plan;&nbsp;one of only six in the world and&nbsp;the&nbsp;only Kansas university to earn the United States Distance Learning Associations certification;the successful completion the Journey Campaign – the largest capital campaign in school historyand the largest single gift in university history. Truly amazing.

Theme three: &nbsp;a unique national championship legacy. From financial planning competitions to athletics to technology and engineering education,&nbsp;our students reinforce the power of our brand when they compete. I love talking about our current student body president, Ryan Stanley, who not only continues to&nbsp;lead our students with integrity,&nbsp;he also excels&nbsp;in the classroom, earning&nbsp;two bachelor’s&nbsp;degrees this past year. A remarkable student-athlete, Ryan&nbsp;also&nbsp;won the national title in the pole vault after clearing a school-record 17-2.75 not once, but twice!&nbsp;

This year our Technology and Engineering Education students won three of the five nationally recognized individual events to claim co-championship all-around honors with Purdue University. With that performance, Fort Hays State became the ITEEA’s first three-peat national champion.&nbsp;Meanwhile,&nbsp;our shotgun team claimed its 8th&nbsp;national championship.

Football claimed the MIAA championships in 2017 and 2018; men’s soccer the&nbsp;MIAA Champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2017 and 2018, GAC/MIAA regular season champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2019, GAC/MIAA Tournament champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2021, and NCAA Tournament Super Region champions in 2018; while Lady Tiger basketball secured the MIAA regular season champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2019, 2021, and 2022.&nbsp;Incredible!

Theme Four:&nbsp;Investing in the quality of the FHSU experience. If there are two constants in my five years – it would be commencement and ribbon cuttings. Both bring&nbsp;me&nbsp;immense joy and gratitude.&nbsp;

I have had the distinct privilege, thanks to the heart of philanthropy that flows to&nbsp;this university, to preside at the ceremonial openings of the Schmidt Foundation Art and Design&nbsp;Hall,&nbsp;the Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Fleharty&nbsp;Family Field (softball),&nbsp;the FHSU Transfer Center at Garden City Community College, the National Guard Office located in the Memorial Union, the Nursing Simulation Lab, the Sternberg Paleo Lab, and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Tailored for Tigers closet. It is with great anticipation that I eagerly await the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the&nbsp;Wilmer and Lorena Kellogg Training Center&nbsp;(shotgun team facility),&nbsp;Schmidt-Bickle Athletic Complex, the Forsyth Library&nbsp;renovation,&nbsp;and of course,&nbsp;celebrating the addition of air conditioning to the Gross Memorial Coliseum!

Theme five: &nbsp;fulfilling our roles as stewards of place. Core to who we are as&nbsp;a&nbsp;regional comprehensive&nbsp;university&nbsp;is our investment in our community.&nbsp;We are called to serve as a steward of place by forging deep connections with the communities we serve, being responsive, and seeking relationships with community leaders that enhance mutual beneficence that results in community well-being.

Our focus on serving our community&nbsp;is often delivered through a combination of applied learning (students helping to build the downtown pavilion, leadership service projects, accounting students helping with tax preparations,&nbsp;community&nbsp;hearing screenings by our communication science disorder students)&nbsp;and outreach&nbsp;focused on helping businesses and communities thrive through several initiatives such as the Docking Institute of Public Affairs, Center for Civic Leadership, Management Development Center, the Kansas Small Business Development Center, and&nbsp;a&nbsp;multitude of other centers and initiatives.

I am very excited about our new Cybersecurity Institute and Technology Incubator. Funded by the 2022&nbsp;Kansas Legislature, the cybersecurity institute will leverage student and faculty expertise to improve the cybersecurity posture for small and medium-sized businesses through student micro internships, capstone projects, and faculty consulting. Our students will gain&nbsp;excellent hands-on learning while businesses&nbsp;will be&nbsp;helped&nbsp;in areas such as website security evaluation, security vulnerability assessment, assistance with deploying data privacy and security controls, software testing, data&nbsp;cleanup,&nbsp;and more.

Our technology incubator will focus on tech and/or cybersecurity venture creation through an in-residence business incubator. These initiatives will leverage the strengths of FHSU to advance the Kansas economy through asset preservation and venture.

These past five years have been incredible.&nbsp;I end this column as I ended my inauguration remarks: &nbsp;Today&nbsp;is our opportunity to pause and reflect on the things that make Fort Hays State University so special&nbsp;–&nbsp;Our spirit of hard work. Our remarkable community. And our enduring legacy of innovation. Together we thrive.&nbsp;

My deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of our legacy story, our journey this past five years, and especially for those of you joining me as we head into our bright future&nbsp;to&nbsp;continue to write this transformative story together.

 </figure>Dec. 18, 2017, was my first day as president of Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;Five years. Wow.&nbsp;As the fifth-year anniversary&nbsp;date approached, I&nbsp;took&nbsp;time&nbsp;to reflect on this wonderful journey of mission, community, setbacks and incredible success.&nbsp;I’ve built this reflection around five key themes that I think best describe my first five years as president.&nbsp;Theme one: first&nbsp;steps.&nbsp;My first days were filled with awe. A&nbsp;homecoming, reuniting&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;faculty and staff&nbsp;I cared&nbsp;deeply&nbsp;about and&nbsp;for whom I&nbsp;believed with unwavering faith in their talents and dedication to serve our mission and students.&nbsp;The inauguration was both a wonderful and humbling experience. I remember the difficulty&nbsp;I&nbsp;felt in adequately expressing my deep gratitude. I continue to feel extremely blessed&nbsp;to serve this&nbsp;university and community.&nbsp;One thing that was very important to me was to do my very best to ensure that&nbsp;the&nbsp;inaugurationwas a celebration&nbsp;for&nbsp;all of&nbsp;us.&nbsp;We needed an inauguration&nbsp;that celebrated&nbsp;not&nbsp;one&nbsp;person but&nbsp;one that celebrated&nbsp;our&nbsp;institution. It was our opportunity to pause and reflect on the things that make Fort Hays State University so special: Our spirit of hard work. Our remarkable community.&nbsp;Our enduring legacy of innovation.&nbsp;And in the center of it all, our magnetic north: our students.&nbsp;That sentiment continues to motivate me to&nbsp;show up, work hard,&nbsp;and&nbsp;do&nbsp;my&nbsp;best every day.The theme of&nbsp;the&nbsp;inauguration,&nbsp;Unlocking Untapped Potential, served as the focal point for launching our strategic plan. During the past five&nbsp;years,&nbsp;we have invested more than $2.5 million in driving our goals of academic excellence, student success, strategic growth, resources and infrastructure, and community and global engagement.&nbsp;My heart is abundantly grateful for the impactful work our campus is leading.Theme two: &nbsp;a remarkable record of “firsts&nbsp;and&nbsp;greatests.” &nbsp;Throughout its 120-year history,&nbsp;Fort Hays State University has been blessed with a community that consistently rallied its support around her, a committed faculty and staff, engaged students, and a strong legacy of leadership.&nbsp;All of these elements come together to create extraordinary results,&nbsp;which I have the fortune of sharing.&nbsp;Here are&nbsp;just&nbsp;a few: 19 consecutive years of enrollment growth;&nbsp;our first Barry Goldwater Scholar Brynn Wooten;&nbsp;the&nbsp;first NCAA school in Kansas&nbsp;and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA)&nbsp;to offer women’s wrestling as a varsity program in intercollegiate athletics;&nbsp;the first campus digital master plan;&nbsp;one of only six in the world and&nbsp;the&nbsp;only Kansas university to earn the United States Distance Learning Associations certification;the successful completion the Journey Campaign – the largest capital campaign in school historyand the largest single gift in university history. Truly amazing.Theme three: &nbsp;a unique national championship legacy. From financial planning competitions to athletics to technology and engineering education,&nbsp;our students reinforce the power of our brand when they compete. I love talking about our current student body president, Ryan Stanley, who not only continues to&nbsp;lead our students with integrity,&nbsp;he also excels&nbsp;in the classroom, earning&nbsp;two bachelor’s&nbsp;degrees this past year. A remarkable student-athlete, Ryan&nbsp;also&nbsp;won the national title in the pole vault after clearing a school-record 17-2.75 not once, but twice!&nbsp;This year our Technology and Engineering Education students won three of the five nationally recognized individual events to claim co-championship all-around honors with Purdue University. With that performance, Fort Hays State became the ITEEA’s first three-peat national champion.&nbsp;Meanwhile,&nbsp;our shotgun team claimed its 8th&nbsp;national championship.Football claimed the MIAA championships in 2017 and 2018; men’s soccer the&nbsp;MIAA Champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2017 and 2018, GAC/MIAA regular season champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2019, GAC/MIAA Tournament champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2021, and NCAA Tournament Super Region champions in 2018; while Lady Tiger basketball secured the MIAA regular season champions&nbsp;in&nbsp;2019, 2021, and 2022.&nbsp;Incredible!Theme Four:&nbsp;Investing in the quality of the FHSU experience. If there are two constants in my five years – it would be commencement and ribbon cuttings. Heart of a Tiger: My first five years as president

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly recently announced that $23.1 million will be awarded to six service providers that will bring high-speed broadband service to nearly 4,200 homes, businesses, schools, health care facilities, and other institutions in unserved and rural areas of the state. This is the second of three rounds of awards from the Kansas Capital Project Funds Grant Program.&nbsp;

The goal of this funding is to solve the “last mile” of broadband need in critical areas. The targeted counties have as few as five locations per square mile, which until now has prevented companies from investing the resources to deliver a quality broadband option. The CPF Grant Program provides the funding needed to implement high-speed broadband in these areas of the state. &nbsp;

“By connecting nearly 4,200 more Kansas homes, businesses, and schools to high-speed internet, we’re continuing to deliver on our goal of giving every Kansan a connection to the world,” Kelly said. “This funding knocks down a barrier for Kansans looking to participate in the digital economy, access telemedicine, and take advantage of online education.”&nbsp;

The&nbsp;grant program results from the U.S. Department of Treasury’s approval of Kansas’ Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund broadband infrastructure plan.&nbsp;The federal CPF program is a $10 billion initiative available to states, territories, and tribal governments under the American Rescue Plan Act to fund capital projects. Kansas was one of the first eight states in the country approved for funding under this program and was allocated $83.5 million. The CPF program opportunity resulted in 141 applications from providers requesting $693 million in funding support to build out broadband infrastructure across Kansas.   &nbsp;

“The Capital Projects Fund program provides the funding necessary for providers to connect Kansans located in some of the most underserved areas of our state,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “We will continue to work with partners across Kansas to ensure all communities have the high-speed broadband they need to compete and succeed.”&nbsp;

Once matching funds from the service providers are included, the total broadband investment in Phase 2 surpasses $30 million.&nbsp;

“The Capital Projects Fund represents the largest grant opportunity to date from the Office of Broadband Development,” said Jade Piros de Carvalho, Director of the Office of Broadband Development. “We are excited about partnering with providers to make a positive impact in communities that have fallen in the digital divide.”&nbsp;

NW Kansas provider among broadband grant recipients

By JOE NEWLAND Kansas Farm Bureau president When I was elected president of Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) earlier this month, it was an incredible honor and a very humbling experience. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to adequately express my gratitude for those who supported my candidacy, but I’m excited to work with our members to advance KFB’s mission to strengthen agriculture through advocacy, education and service. I have considered myself a farmer ever since my first ride on the combine, which was long before I was able to operate one by myself. From that formative experience, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life caring for the land, tending crops and livestock and raising my family. About the time I was able to safely operate equipment on my own, I discovered FFA. It helped me better understand the world of agriculture extends far beyond the farm gate. My FFA adviser helped me discover my lifelong passion of promoting agriculture, both as a business and as a way of life. After marrying my wife, Dana, I became a Farm Bureau member for the first time because I had to have insurance. I quickly learned the value of a membership went well beyond protecting our home, cars and farm. We thought we were buying protection from financial loss, but we had actually purchased comprehensive coverage securing our way of life. As I began seeking out ways to advocate for agriculture, the Wilson County Farm Bureau stood out as a place where I could really make an impact for the industry and my community. My work there gave me the confidence to expand my leadership through civic groups, the local school board, a bank board, Kansas Farm Bureau committees and eventually representing southeast Kansas on KFB’s board of directors before serving in the Kansas House. The support of my wife and our four children has been instrumental in allowing me to spend time away from the farm pursuing these opportunities. I have no doubt they will continue to support and counsel me as I take on this new endeavor. I use “we” to acknowledge all the help I’ve received from friends and family that’s helped me succeed over the years. A big difference now is “we” extends to every border of Kansas. I am no longer a member of a local board, a district board or the Kansas House, all of which represented a part of the whole. I’m now tasked with helping ensure farms and ranches across the state – from Lenexa to Liberal and Bird City to Baxter Springs – prosper. The challenges you face on the farm, the issues you see in your schools and the obstacles you notice in your community aren’t just yours, they’re mine too. We must view these as opportunities rather than barriers. I have no doubt Kansas Farm Bureau can solve the most vexing matters facing agriculture today because I’ve experienced firsthand how the organization’s grassroots structure keeps us at the forefront of what matters. Of all the titles I’ve held, farmer is still the one I’m most proud of. I’ve come a long way from that first combine ride, but I’ve had plenty of help along the way. I’ll continue to rely on farmers and ranchers across the state to make sure KFB is successful as we tackle issues like water, taxes, regulation and more. Together we will represent all of agriculture.
