GOVE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Friday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 GMC passenger vehicle driven by Oscar H. Chavez Adame, 38, Dodge City, was southbound on County Road 22 one mile south of Gove County I Road.

The driver missed the curve and rolled into the field.

EMS transported passengers 40-year-old&nbsp; Pedro I.&nbsp;Delgado Contreras and 26-year-old Andres&nbsp;Delgado both of Ness City to the Lane County Hospital. Chavez Adame was not injured. Delgado was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

2 Kansas men injured after vehicle rolls into field

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 10:30a.m. Friday in Sheridan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by 18-year-old Devin C. Powell of Dodge City was northbound on Kansas 23 approximately 14 miles south of U.S. 24.

The vehicle left the roadway to the right, vaulted over a field entrance, continued northeast, entered a field, made a sharp right turn and rolled.

EMS transported Powell to Swedish Medical Center in Denver and a passenger Eldon M.&nbsp; Leighty, 18, Lakin, to the Sheridan County Hospital. Powell was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Jaime L. Budde, 40, Scott City, was northbound on U.S. 83 eight and one half miles south of Oakley.

The semi rear-ended a 2023 Freightliner semi driven by Douglas L. Gibson, 55, Greensboro, North Carolina, who slowed when a camper&nbsp; hauling a passenger car moved out in front of the vehicle.

EMS transported Budde to the Logan County Hospital. Gibson was not injured.

Severe thunderstorms rolled across west-central Kansas,&nbsp; including Lane and Ness counties, shortly after 7:30 p.m Thursday.&nbsp;

A tornado was also reported just before 9 p.m. approximately 9.5 miles east-northeast of Dighton, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City. 

The storms dropped hail and heavy rain in that area, with 3.16 inches of rain falling six miles southwest of Utica. Flood warnings were also issued for the area.

The major activity stayed west and south of Hays.&nbsp;

According to the K-State Agricultural Research Center, Hays received 0.25 inch of rain.

Although human trafficking is illegal in every country in the world, it is the fastest-growing&nbsp;criminal industry, worth more than $152 billion a year.

Margaret Nacke, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, spoke about human trafficking Wednesday night to a group in Victoria.&nbsp;

Nacke founded <a href="https://sistersagainsttrafficking.org/">U S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking</a> 10 years ago. The faith-based national network offers education, supports access to survivor services and engages in advocacy to end modern-day slavery.&nbsp;

Nacke said Americans like to think of slavery as a problem that happens over there in other countries, but human trafficking is happening in the United States and even in our small, rural communities.

"They are real slaves by definition," she said. "People forced to work without pay and unable to escape. They are trafficked in brothels, factories, rest stops, hotels and they are women and children.

"Despite real progress, slavery often remains hidden."

In American history, slaves were advertised on posters in taverns. Today traffickers use the internet and social media to sell people.

An estimated 100,000 children are commercially sexually exploited annually in the U.S. That number could be as high as 300,000.

Children as young as 8 and 9 are being forced into pornography and the sex trade.

In the United States, 82 percent of the human trafficking is sex trafficking. Ninety-eight percent of those who are trafficked are women and girls, although Nacke said there's been a steady increase in the number of men and boys who are being sex trafficked.

Trafficked victims can be anyone. They can come from "good homes" and wealthy families, she said.

A judge from Colorado told her the story of how his father, who was a doctor, abused him from the time he was a boy and then sold him to others for sex.

Grooming is a significant factor in luring girls and boys into the sex trade. Social media is often used to do that. Runaways, foster children, children who have been abused, individuals who suffer from drug addiction, LGBTQ youth and individuals in poverty are more vulnerable, she said.

Interstates, including I-70 and I-80, are shipping lanes for traffickers.

The group Wednesday talked about the need for parents, grandparents, teachers, doctors, emergency room personnel, hairdressers and even dentists to be aware of how to spot signs of trafficking.

Via Christi Health offered some of those red flags in handouts provided at the lecture. • Has few or no personal possessions. • Suddenly has expensive items with no means to pay for them • Has a much older girlfriend or boyfriend • Carrying large amounts of cash • Calls significant other daddy • School-age but not in school • Shows signs of physical or sexual abuse • Has tattoos that say "daddy" or "property of ..." • Sexually transmitted diseases • Malnutrition • Lack of health care • Clothing inconsistent with the weather • Is accompanied by a controlling person • Exhibits fear and nervousness and avoids eye contact • Does not control passport, ID or other personal documents • Hyper-vigilance • Is not in control of their own money

Once a person is in the sex trade, life can be brutal and short. Nacke said her organization is helping a woman whose pimp pulled out all her top teeth as a punishment for trying to run away.

Mail-order brides or forced marriages are other forms of slavery.&nbsp;Nacke said her organization was contacted about a citizen from another country bringing a child bride onto a U.S. university campus. The organization wasn't able to help the girl because the man had legally married her in his home country.

Nacke said minors who have been forced into the sex trade are not criminals, although they were traditionally treated as such by the U.S. justice system.

The pimps and the customers are the criminals, she said.

"Just like with any product, if you don't have buyers, the product closes out. That is not happening as far as buying people," she said.

Nacke said she hopes more families will talk about this issue with the men in boys. She also said she would like to see more research on why men, typically 40 to 60, married with children and college educated, chose to buy women and girls for sex.

Labor trafficking is even more common than sex trafficking, and it is occurring in the United States. Minor immigrants desperate to earn money to help support their parents come to America and are put to work in dangerous jobs.

Every day, Americans use products and consume foods that are produced by child laborers in other countries. These products can include coffee, chocolate, rice, fish, fresh produce, gold jewelry and athletic shoes.&nbsp;

Nacke encouraged people to research where and by whom the products they buy are made. They also can choose fair-trade products.

Hays student wins 1st place in Kansas Masonic Foundation Essay Contest

Jacie Roth has always had a sweet tooth and a passion for baking, so when she and her mother decided to launch a homemade treats business,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087339709185&amp;mibextid=LQQJ4d" target="_blank">161 Candy</a>, she had no idea it would lead to future learning opportunities.

Roth graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 2021 and joined the Barton Community College family as a freshman the following fall, and she has enrolled in several business-related courses. However, there are two that she attributes much of her success to, Introduction to Business and Marketing, both taught by Business Computer Management Instructor Deanna Heier. She was invited to participate in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge (KEC) hosted by Kansas State University (KSU) through these classes.

Heier said she immediately thought of Jacie when she heard about the KEC. “Jacie is a real leader in class and has so much initiative to really reach for her dreams and work really hard to achieve them,” she said.

Throughout the business and marketing courses, Roth was tasked with developing a business and marketing plan for a real or fake business.

“I chose to refine 161 Candy within these projects, and the KEC seemed to fit right in with the work I was currently doing in my classes,” she said. “I felt that this competition was a great opportunity for me to showcase the business we have created and gain more publicity for our business as well.”

Roth submitted an executive summary and an ‘elevator’ pitch video. This submission secured her a spot as a finalist in the KEC. On April 20,&nbsp;Roth traveled to Manhattan to compete in the live competition on the KSU campus. The live competition consisted of a tradeshow competition where she would explain her business proposal to the attendees, mostly made up of KSU students, staff, faculty, and community members, who would then vote for their favorite businesses. She also presented her business and marketing plan for 161 Candy to a panel of KEC judges.

“I put countless hours into preparation for the competition by creating several professional presentation boards, purchasing packaging supplies that fit the event theme, printing hundreds of pictures, designing a product scrapbook, preparing a speech, figuring out possible table layouts, and making delicious treats to be displayed and given to judges,” she said.

Out of the six finalists in the college division, 161 Candy took home first place in both the tradeshow and the KEC-judged competitions. Roth won a total of $4,000 that she will use toward funding new kitchen equipment for her business expansion.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity that was presented to me,” she said. “I am very proud of all the hard work that I put in to make this all possible.”

Heier said it was exciting to see Roth implement what she learned in the classroom to take her business to the next level. “Jacie’s dedication and passion for her business is apparent and paid off during her competition this spring,” she said. “I am very proud of her for all her accomplishments and very excited to see how her business will grow.”

 </figure>By MAGGIE HARRIS BCC Jacie Roth has always had a sweet tooth and a passion for baking, so when she and her mother decided to launch a homemade treats business,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087339709185&amp;mibextid=LQQJ4d" target="_blank">161 Candy</a>, she had no idea it would lead to future learning opportunities.Roth graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 2021 and joined the Barton Community College family as a freshman the following fall, and she has enrolled in several business-related courses. However, there are two that she attributes much of her success to, Introduction to Business and Marketing, both taught by Business Computer Management Instructor Deanna Heier. She was invited to participate in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge (KEC) hosted by Kansas State University (KSU) through these classes.Heier said she immediately thought of Jacie when she heard about the KEC. “Jacie is a real leader in class and has so much initiative to really reach for her dreams and work really hard to achieve them,” she said.Throughout the business and marketing courses, Roth was tasked with developing a business and marketing plan for a real or fake business.“I chose to refine 161 Candy within these projects, and the KEC seemed to fit right in with the work I was currently doing in my classes,” she said. “I felt that this competition was a great opportunity for me to showcase the business we have created and gain more publicity for our business as well.”Roth submitted an executive summary and an ‘elevator’ pitch video. This submission secured her a spot as a finalist in the KEC. On April 20,&nbsp;Roth traveled to Manhattan to compete in the live competition on the KSU campus. The live competition consisted of a tradeshow competition where she would explain her business proposal to the attendees, mostly made up of KSU students, staff, faculty, and community members, who would then vote for their favorite businesses. She also presented her business and marketing plan for 161 Candy to a panel of KEC judges.“I put countless hours into preparation for the competition by creating several professional presentation boards, purchasing packaging supplies that fit the event theme, printing hundreds of pictures, designing a product scrapbook, preparing a speech, figuring out possible table layouts, and making delicious treats to be displayed and given to judges,” she said.Out of the six finalists in the college division, 161 Candy took home first place in both the tradeshow and the KEC-judged competitions. Roth won a total of $4,000 that she will use toward funding new kitchen equipment for her business expansion.“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity that was presented to me,” she said. “I am very proud of all the hard work that I put in to make this all possible.”Heier said it was exciting to see Roth implement what she learned in the classroom to take her business to the next level. “Jacie’s dedication and passion for her business is apparent and paid off during her competition this spring,” she said. “I am very proud of her for all her accomplishments and very excited to see how her business will grow.”

Phillipsburg grad and BCC student wins $4,000 in entrepreneurship competition   

There were smiles all around at the inaugural STEM Harvest event in downtown Hays Saturday.

STEM Harvest is a local non-profit organization and is the brainchild of Dallas and Dacia Haselhorst. This was the first of many activities planned for the organization and it allowed them to showcase the repurposed, beautifully renovated space at 507 Main aimed at STEM&nbsp;(science, technology, engineering and math) education.

Made possible by the “To Infinity and Beyond” grant from NetWorked for Change, the event offered a range of station-based activities, including 3D printing, electronics and soldering, technology deconstruction, and coding.

Each station provided a unique learning experience, allowing participants to engage in problem-solving and critical thinking while having fun.

The 3D printing station was a hit as participants were able to see the technology in action as well as some of the amazing items they could produce.

At the electronics and soldering station, participants learned how to build simple circuits and safely solder components.

The technology deconstruction station allowed participants to take apart old laptops and explore the inner workings of various devices.

Finally, the coding station provided an opportunity for participants to learn programming basics and see how that code translated to the real world by flying a drone.

Volunteers ran the stations, providing valuable knowledge and experience to the participants.

Several volunteers traveled in from out of town to lend a hand while many others came from local businesses and Fort Hays State University student organizations, such as FHSU STEM Education and FHSU Cybersecurity Club.

STEM Harvest sponsors for the event were Networked for Change, TreeTop Security, SANS Technology Institute, Grow Hays, Heartland Community Foundation and the Beach Family Foundation. Refreshments, snacks, and lunch were provided by local businesses, including Breathe Coffee House, Daylight Donuts, and Little Dinero Pizzeria. “This was a small sliver of the possibilities and what we have in mind," Dallas Haselhorst said. "The space and idea have been years in the making so while it has been exhausting to get to this point, the success of this single event fuels us to continue forward with our vision.”

Grants have been hard to come by for the organization with more than 80 percent of the efforts thus far being self-funded.

The husband and wife team said those statistics do not include time volunteered by family and friends who also believed in the STEM Harvest vision.

“It’s been frustrating, although we are hopeful this helps others better understand the concept and need for these valuable learning opportunities," Dallas&nbsp;Haselhorst said.

"I’m not overselling it when I say this has the potential to be transformative for the community and region for many years to come. We will continue on our current path and keep fighting the good fight.”

Stockton resident reappointed to KS State Fair Board

TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before noon Thursday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1998 Dodge Caravan driven by Donald L. Lopez, 38, Denver, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of U.S. 283.&nbsp;

The van traveled off the road, struck a guardrail, rolled and the driver was ejected.

EMS transported Lopez to a Wichita hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Ellis High honors track seniors

Tyler Dallis explores Native American imagery as well as connections with family and the loss of those connections in their MFA exhibit "Bloodlines."

The exhibit is on display now through May 11 at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art on the Fort Hays State University campus.

Dallis' focus is ceramics and photography, although they have created mixed-media sculptures as well.

"Basically, my show is about my family," they said, "about my adoptive family, my biological family and my found family.&nbsp; I decided to call it 'Bloodlines' because of all of these types of experiences I have had with these people in my life. It's almost like a big family tree."

Dallis grew up on a Cherokee Nation reservation in Oklahoma.&nbsp; Indigenous artwork is a big part of their work.&nbsp;

"[I am] trying to take these traditional techniques and trying to build them into contemporary artwork," they said.&nbsp;

"I would like to think when I'm building the pieces, I am actively thinking about the person I'm making it about and braiding these memories into the clay—pushing and pulling—and then when I fire them, it solidifies them into actual reality. It will be less likely to be forgotten."

Dallis has multiple pieces in the exhibit that are ceramic mixed-media bridges, which are symbolic of the connections between people.

"Osiyo," which means hello in Cherokee, is a life-size human figure in native dress. Dallis modeled the figure after himself.

"It is a representation of my spirit," they said, "almost as a spirit guide, guiding me through my life."

The figure is holding a bridge. Dallis made the rungs of that bridge by pressing clay in their hands. The gold rungs symbolize positive events in their life, and the blue rings are negative trauma. There is a continuation of the bridge, which is symbolic of Dallis' future.

"In Bloom" is a wall of photos of Dallis' friends, who Dallis calls their found family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Psychology research indicates when you receive flowers, your brain releases oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine—all feel-good chemicals.

"I was comparing these people to flowers because, to me, picking a friend is just as hard as finding the perfect flower in the field and calling it your own," they said.

Dallis also created a series of self-portrait photographs called "5,000 Cuts." The series is about an unhealthy relationship. The words of the song by the same name, "Death by a Thousand Cuts," is written on the photographs.

"Broken Memories" is a collection of ceramic plates. The plates are brightly decorated in red paint with the faceless outlines of people depicted on them. All of the plates are broken.

When Dallis was an undergraduate, their father committed suicide. When this happened, they said they felt they lost their adopted family. Their expression of their identity and sexuality widened that fissure with their adoptive family, they said.

"I haven't talked to my family in seven years," they said. "They are all aging and growing, and I'm forgetting what they look like. This is me trying to connect with these people again."

&nbsp;"Escape" is a simple piece. It is a hangman's noose and a toppled stool that Dallis has used to represent their father's suicide. Both items are painted bright red.

"I wanted to talk about the absent other," they said, "and that there are implied things that happen in life. You can see an act happened here even though there is no hint of a figure."

They said red is the most powerful color. It can represent many things, including hunger, love and anger.

"It gives me a feeling of red flags of what to look for in someone who might have suicidal tendencies," they said.

Dallis will graduate with their master's of fine arts in May and hopes to teach art at the college level.

Hays High students win Kansas Association of Broadcasters award

Hays Post, a leading news source in western Kansas, has announced Cristina Janney as its new editor.&nbsp;

Janney, a veteran journalist with&nbsp;almost&nbsp;30 years of experience, will assume the role&nbsp;immediately.&nbsp;

In her new role, Janney will&nbsp;oversee the newsroom and ensure&nbsp;that Hays Post continues to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;high-quality, local journalism to the community.&nbsp;

"I am honored to have the opportunity to lead such a talented group of journalists at Hays Post," Janney said. "I look forward to working with the team to continue to provide the residents&nbsp;of&nbsp;our region&nbsp;with the news and information they need to stay informed and engaged."&nbsp;

Janney&nbsp;has&nbsp;bachelor's&nbsp;and master’s degrees&nbsp;in journalism from&nbsp;Kansas State University.&nbsp;She is a&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;native and&nbsp;resides&nbsp;in Hays. She has been with Eagle, the parent company of Hays Post,&nbsp;since 2017&nbsp;and has contributed countless articles to the publication, helping to grow the post's&nbsp;audience year&nbsp;after year.&nbsp;

General manager Todd Lynd is excited to see Janney assume the role.&nbsp;

“She has&nbsp;repeatedly proven to have the pulse of&nbsp;central&nbsp;and western Kansas,” Lynd said. “As a veteran newspaper reporter, editor and publisher,&nbsp;we have no doubt Hays Post will continue to be the first choice for news in&nbsp;our region&nbsp;and beyond.”&nbsp;

While at Hays Post,&nbsp;Janney has won&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;writing and photography&nbsp;awards, including&nbsp;second&nbsp;in the Journalist of the Year category in the 2022 Kansas Press Association awards.&nbsp;

Along with writing duties, Janney has also been a featured&nbsp;voice on Eagle radio stations,&nbsp;including 94,3 KAYS, 99.5 KHAZ, 103.3 KJLS,&nbsp;96.9 KFIX&nbsp;and 101.9 KKQY, delivering news reports and in-depth interviews with government and business leaders.&nbsp;

“In all aspects,&nbsp;Cristina&nbsp;has adapted and embraced a multi-media news mindset,” Lynd said. “Her writing and broadcasting skills made her the perfect choice to lead our converged media newsroom,&nbsp;and we are excited to see&nbsp;the development and implementation of news for our loyal readers and listeners.”&nbsp;

STAFFORD COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 9p.m. Wednesday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Ashley N. Jackson, 38, Larned, was eastbound in 900 Block of NE 140th Street.

&nbsp;The SUV struck a deer crossing the roadway from the south ditch.

EMS transported Jackson and a passenger 37-year-old Chaylayne S. Jackson of Larned to the hospital in Larned. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
