If you had one thing you could change about the USD 489 school district, what would it be?

USD 489 has a great history and legacy. Our teachers and do a solid job and represent Hays well. However, our test scores and proficiency in English and Math are not at the level that they should be. We need new strategies to solve this. A way to return to core education, and perhaps focus less on social, emotional learning. This won’t happen unless the board challenges the administration to perform to a higher standard. Our future is now, and we can’t afford to wait around and see what happens.

What is your opinion of the current school board? Do you think you could compromise with the incumbents who will remain on the board?

The current board has great intentions and genuinely wants to serve this community. Unfortunately, great intentions are not a strategy. Compromise is the key to democracy and is essential to a successful board. In the last board work session, board members had the opportunity to change their procedures and rules to create a more transparent and functional system. Sadly, the status quo won out again.

What is your opinion of the Hays USD 489 administration?

I have not interacted much with the current administration. I was disappointed with the process for the new high school plans and contract. As well as their stance on the gender-neutral restroom. I hope that they will be open to change and new idea’s. If we keep doing the same and expecting different results, we all know what happens, nothing.

What do you think the board’s role should be in the day-to-day operations of the district?

The administration should run the day-to -day of the district. The board should serve as a check, and not as a rubber stamp. It is up to the board to set a standard for education, then follow through with accountability if that standard is not met. It should also represent the taxpayer and ensure fiscal responsibility.

What role do you think the board should have in moving forward with the bond issue projects?

It is imperative for the board to have oversite on the bond projects. The community approved this measure in good faith, and it is now up to the board to live up to that faith. From determining any potential reduction to the mill levy, to monitoring construction and overages, the board should be extremely involved. This is not a blank check from the community. The board is spending hard working family’s money and should treat it as so.

Hays USD 489 BOE candidate: Dennis Wilkie

Most of us know that physical activity is key to a healthy lifestyle. But did you know that exercise in the fall and winter is particularly important? Studies show that exercise can ward off seasonal depression, keep illness at bay, and keep holiday calories in check.

As the days get shorter and the chance to soak up vitamin D from the sun dwindles, seasonal depression is a major issue for Americans. It’s harder to find time to get outside, schedules get busier, and stress increases. Motivation to exercise may be a challenge due to these reasons, but exercise can make a complete difference in how you feel! Regular workouts release endorphins that boost mood, increase energy levels, and reduce stress which can combat the seasonal depression of winter.

Regular moderate-intensity exercise also plays an important role in immune health. This can decrease your chances of getting sick during the cold and flu season. However, it is important to note that regular activity is key because exercise improves overall health which boosts immune function. This is because it increases the circulation of immune cells, acts as a natural sleep aid, and reduces inflammation. So, continue hitting the gym a few times a week and you might see your overall health and immune health improve!

Finally, we all know that holiday treats are the culprit of excess weight gain most of us struggle with every year. Although it is important to enjoy family gatherings and indulge occasionally, it is just as important to get back on track. When working out is a habit, this is a lot easier. In fact, regular exercise helps to manage the hunger hormones that often lead to overeating. Regular exercisers also feel more encouraged to eat mindfully and drink more water which can help control weight fluctuation.

The change in seasons may have shifted your routine. This can make it hard to find time to exercise, so here are a few tips to stay active as the weather cools down:

· Make time for an outdoor workout during the day's warmer parts. You might find it more appealing to go for a walk over your lunch hour as opposed to chilly mornings. Prepping your lunch ahead of time can help you squeeze in a quick brain break.

· Join a fitness class or sports league. Having accountability from others may be the motivation you need. Plus, socialization always makes exercise more fun! There are multiple options for group fitness options. Most local recreation commissions offer basketball, volleyball, and other various sports.&nbsp;Classes offered by K-State Research and Extension will also gear up in January. These include Walk with Ease in Hoisington and Stay Strong, Stay Healthy in Hays. Contact your local extension office to learn more!

· Keep moving throughout your day. Maybe you don’t have the time to make it to the gym, but setting daily activity goals can still improve your health. A daily step goal is a common one that many people reap benefits from. I have twin boys who will attend Victoria in a few years. My sister and four nieces and nephews currently attend Victoria Elementary School.&nbsp;

Why are you running for school board?&nbsp;

USD 432 has always held a special place in my heart because my husband and I both graduated from Victoria. Now, as a mother of twin boys, it is even more important to me that my children attend the same school that their parents did. If elected, my goal would be to preserve and improve USD 432 so my children, and the other children in the community, &nbsp;have the opportunity for local education and support as they grow up. I’m extremely passionate about our school, our children, and their continued success

If you had one thing you could change about the USD&nbsp;432&nbsp;school district, what would it be?&nbsp;

&nbsp;I would change the perception of the district as a whole. USD 432 is thriving in so many positive ways. However, oftentimes it seems that only the negative things get attention. I would like to see the amazing parts of the district shine brighter than the criticism it faces. My goal is to bring attention to all of the great things happening in our district — big and small!&nbsp;

&nbsp;What is your opinion of the Victoria USD 432 administration? Do you think you could work with the current administration moving forward?

It can be hard to accept change, especially in a smaller community where many current students’ parents also attended school here. It’s easy to stay in the mindset of “We did it this way when I was here.” However, like everything else, as time passes things have to change to set students and staff up for success. I believe our administration works hard to facilitate the necessary changes to set our children up for success. Having an open mind and open communication between administrators and the school board will ensure continued success for USD 432 and its students.

What is your opinion of the current school board? Do you think you could compromise with the incumbents who will remain on the board?

I commend the current school board for handling the past year with grace. Taking on this role requires a lot dedication to our school district because the school board members face a lot of criticism and controversy. I believe the current board has taken their roles seriously with the goal of supporting our school. I am ready to hit the ground running and get in stride with the current board members as well as bring new and fresh ideas to the table. I am confident that I will be able to work with the incumbents because we all have a common goal of USD 432’s continued success.&nbsp;

The board’s role in day-to-day operations is simple: to effectively support the administration, staff and, most importantly, the students. They should be available to the community and to the school as needed to listen and solve issues that arise.

What are your opinions of the school district’s discipline policies and how they have been applied?

The district’s teachers and administrators are faced with a difficult task in disciplinary actions because they are not only dealing with students, but also parents, in these situations. There will always be disagreements between parents and administrators on how discipline should be handled. However, the school board’s job is to support — not second guess — the administrators and teachers in their disciplinary decisions. In my opinion, the focus should first and foremost be to educate the students and set them up for success. Education of students includes conflict resolution and learning the consequences of their actions. &nbsp;

What do you think the school district should do to improve student test scores and academic performance?

This is such a difficult concept because every student learns and performs differently. The absolute best thing the district can do is encourage the students in their education! The board should also support the teachers and administrators who are on the front lines of these issues. The board should take heed of the teacher’s suggestions and concerns when it comes to these issues because they are the ones with the education and experience to lead our students to academic success.

Imagine Ellis County 'Fall in Ellis Co.' contest underway

After jumping two dollars a barrel on Friday, the benchmark Nymex crude futures contract dropped three dollars Monday. By lunchtime, U.S. crude dipped below $83 a barrel and London Brent dropped under $88. &nbsp;

Kansas diesel prices spiked last week, vaulting 42 cents a gallon in just seven days. Nationwide, diesel prices were four cents a gallon higher than a week earlier, but seven cents lower than a month ago, according to the auto club AAA. 

In Kansas, the average pump price for diesel reached $4.70 a gallon last Thursday, an increase of 42 cents from a week earlier, the biggest one-week bump in recent memory, and twenty cents higher than the national average. Prices have since dropped to $4.62 as of Monday. 

Weekly government reporting shows national diesel fuel inventories down 1.7 million barrels from a week ago. The Energy Information Administration says diesel stockpiles are about 12% below the five-year average for this time of year.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was down two rigs in eastern Kansas, and down one in the western half of the state. That's a nearly eight percent drop from last week, down more than five percent from a month ago, and down over 39% from a year ago. Drilling was underway Monday on two leases in Ellis County and one in Barton County. Year to date, 207 operators have spudded 1,069 wells in Kansas, and drilled 2.9 million feet of well bore.

Operators across the state completed 21 wells in the week through October 26th. Out of 13 in western Kansas, six were dry holes.&nbsp; Kansas regulators okayed 37 permits for drilling at new locations, including one in Ellis County.

The government reported another all-time record for U.S. crude production. The Energy Information Administration says domestic operators pumped a best-ever 13,230,000 barrels per day last week. Before this year, output has exceeded 13 million barrels per day only twice. The U.S. has now topped 13 million barrels per day in each of the last three weekly reports.

The government says U.S. crude inventories are up 1.4 million barrels to just over 421 million as of October 20. Stockpiles are about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year. Energy Information Administration said average daily domestic crude imports rose by 71-thousand barrels to six million barrels per day. The four week average is up nearly two percent over the same four weeks last year. 

Oil-by-rail traffic was down for the week but rose compared to last year. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,945 tanker carloads of petroleum or petroleum products rolling the rails in the week through October 21st. That's down more than six hundred tankers from a week earlier, but marks an 8.3 percent increase over the same week a year ago. Association of American Railroads reports the weekly totals have surpassed the year-ago tallies each week since July.

China is turning oil sanctions into a profit center. Just this year, China has reaped savings of nearly $10 billion through record purchases of oil from countries under western sanctions. That's according to Reuters reporting on trade and shipments from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Cheaper crude bolsters the world's second-largest consumer and refiner, especially China's small independent operators. It also bolsters an already-lucrative export trade in diesel and gasoline.

In a sign of the times, the Chinese oil and gas firm PetroChina has reportedly settled a crude-oil transaction using the country's official digital currency. That's a first, according to the government newspaper China Daily, which reported a deal for a million barrels of crude sold at the Shanghai exchange was settled with China's Central Bank Digital Currency. Prices were not disclosed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Just this year, China has reaped savings of nearly $10 billion through record purchases of oil from countries under western sanctions. That's according to Reuters reporting on trade and shipments from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Cheaper crude bolsters the world's second-largest consumer and refiner, especially China's small independent operators. It also bolsters an already-lucrative export trade in diesel and gasoline.In a sign of the times, the Chinese oil and gas firm PetroChina has reportedly settled a crude-oil transaction using the country's official digital currency. That's a first, according to the government newspaper China Daily, which reported a deal for a million barrels of crude sold at the Shanghai exchange was settled with China's Central Bank Digital Currency. Prices were not disclosed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp; – The Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner, a division of the Kansas Insurance Department, warns investors to be aware of a new type of scam involving the purchase of artificial intelligence&nbsp; algorithms by investors for the purpose of trading cryptocurrencies promising abnormally high returns.

“New technology can often bring with it new scams,” Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt said. “While the potential exists for AI algorithms to create positive returns on an investment, Kansans should do their own research before investing in any AI or cryptocurrency related offering.”

These scams work by offering investors the opportunity to invest in an AI platform that uses automation to trade cryptocurrency. They often contain a multi-level marketing element that promises additional returns for every additional investor brought to the offering. 

In some cases, these schemes will also offer a secondary investment called an initial coin offering (ICO), which comes with a narrow window of investment opportunity. These ICOs will offer the same cryptocurrency token listed in the ICO as the interest payment source to investors or higher returns if the investor purchases both the AI trading algorithm with the ICO. All these elements combine into a fraud that promises incredibly high returns with little effort—both hallmarks of fraud.

Work has started on Hays High School, the largest of the Hays USD 489 bond projects.

With the signing of the contract with Nabholz Construction, the construction manager at-risk, some residents are asking where is my money going and how did a&nbsp;$95 million new high school construction project end up as an almost $105 million project.

The bond includes the construction of a new high school. The current high school will be remodeled into a middle school. The current middle school will be remodeled into an elementary school. Roosevelt Elementary School is being expanded and remodeled. O'Loughlin Elementary School will receive renovations.

Rockwell Administration Center and Lincoln Elementary School will be closed. The administration plans to move into Wilson Elementary School upon the closure of Rockwell.

Chris Hipp, assistant superintendent of business services, gave a presentation to the school board during a work session on Monday to explain bond financing.

Voters in the Hays school district approved a $143.5 million bond in May 2022.

Hipp said the school district has two obligations: to pay off the bond loan and to complete the projects the district promised voters.

The bonds were sold at an average interest rate of 4.12 percent for a 30-year term.

Just like a car loan or mortgage, the full cost of the loan will include both the $143.5 million principal plus interest.

"The community does not need to be afraid that we are going to spend more money and charge [people] more bills," Hipp said.

The 4.12 interest rate is locked in. The district could refinance the loan at a later date if an opportunity arose to take advantage of a lower interest rate.

The bond mill levy and a .5 percent sales tax will be used to repay the bond loan. The mill levy and sale tax can only be used to pay back the loan. They can't be used for any other district expenses, Hipp said.

The district can't raise the bond mill levy above what is needed to make the payments on the original $143.5 million bond loan, Hipp said.

When the district calculated the anticipated mill levy for the loan payments, it conservatively estimated revenue from the sales tax.

Instead of the $290,000 to $300,000 per month in sales tax income the district estimated, the sales tax is bringing in $315,000 to $320,000 per month.

The district can use this extra revenue to lower the mill levy or it can use it to further pay down the bond.&nbsp;The mill levy is set when the district sets the rest of its annual budget.

"The sales tax helps manage the mill levy," Hipp said.

The district was able to lower the mill levy this year based on the higher-than-estimated revenue from the sales tax, Hipp said.

The sales tax was only approved for 10 years. If it is not reauthorized, the. mill levy would have to be increased to pay the full cost of the bond payments.

Residents have raised concerns about inflation. Inflation will not affect the mill levy or sales tax, Hipp said. The sales tax can't go beyond .5 percent. The mill levy can't be raised above what the district needs to pay back the principal and interest on the original $143.5 million loan.

 Inflation can affect the scope of the project. However, Hipp said there are other factors built into the project funding that can help account for inflation.

The district received premiums during the bond sale. These funds in addition to the $143.5 million from the loan were invested in treasury securities to align with when the district would have to pay for the construction work.

However, the IRS restricts how much interest the school can earn on the bond funds. This is called an arbitrage rate, which is about. 3.66 percent.

Anything above the arbitrage rate has to be paid to the IRS.

The district can spend money on bond projects that include the initial loan amount, the premiums from the bond sale and the investment interest minus the arbitrage rate

In addition, funds from the sale of any property associated with the bond can be used to pay for bond projects. This could include Lincoln Elementary School and Rockwell Administration Center, which are set to close once the bond projects are completed. The district has also applied for $2 million in grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to pay for storm shelters that are part of the bond projects.

When you take all of these funds into consideration, the district could have up to $161.9 million to invest in the bond projects, Hipp said.

Hipp said the extra funds could be used to help deal with inflation or any other unforeseen cost overruns.

The original estimate for the high school was about $95 million. The bid that was approved by the school board on Oct. 4 was almost $1o5 million.&nbsp;

The additional money in the project fund, including bond premiums, interest, sale of property and the FEMA grant funds can be used to cover that gap, Hipp said.

The district also can use capital outlay funds toward building or renovation projects. This could also include new furniture or equipment that would need to be purchased in relation to the bond projects.

A previous board set the capital outlay levy permanently at 8 mills. These funds are also used to pay off lease agreements for previous facility work, buses and vehicles, and technology.

Our school district has a lot of great programs in place that are good for our students, educators, staff, and facilities. I would support these programs, not take them for granted, and help them progress.

We have a wonderful community and school district and have current resources that are meant to keep the community involved. A more informed community builds trust and helps everyone to have a more educated opinion. I want to ensure we do not take the value of this communication lightly. We have to keep working on ways to grow the community’s trust by helping everyone understand the processes and staying ahead of possible confusion. At the same time, building trust means listening to the wins and opportunities that are voiced. This doesn’t mean everyone’s opinions should be followed, but they should be heard and respected.

Over the last several years, I have seen positive growth in the decision-making and vision of our school board. Their combined efforts and support led to a unanimous approval of our school bond in 2022. This year, the school board worked with administration, educators, and staff to increase pay levels to retain these valuable people and help recruit talent to this district.

As a prospective school board member, I would approach working with school board members with a spirit of collaboration, communication, and respect. The goal of a school board is to make decisions that serve the best interests of the students and the community. Finding common ground and working together to achieve these shared objectives is essential. While disagreements may arise, the focus should remain on what is best for our students, educators, and the district’s vision and mission. Effective governance often involves productive dialogue and consensus-building, leading to policies and decisions that benefit the entire school community.

Like other school districts, our USD 489 Administration has had many challenges, including COVID-19, staffing, and the passing of the school bond. We have a strong administration team that has worked hard to support the best interests of our school district. They realize that not all of their ideas will be popular, and in many situations, there are many choices, but one must be made to keep our programs moving forward. Demonstrating the courage to take on this responsibility through the good and bad times is much appreciated. Having the full support and guidance of the school board reflects that appreciation.

The school board's role in the day-to-day operations of a school district is not to directly manage the daily activities but to provide guidance, set policies, and ensure that the district runs smoothly. The board's primary job is to create and implement policies and rules that set the direction for the district, such as curriculum standards, budget allocation, and personnel practices. This includes ensuring that the district's actions align with its long-term goals and that resources are used wisely. Additionally, they hire and supervise the district superintendent, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the schools, ensuring that they follow the board's policies and achieve the district's goals.

Furthermore, the school board acts as a bridge between the community and the district, gathering input from parents, teachers, and constituents to make informed decisions.

They also oversee the budget to ensure that funds are used effectively and that legal and ethical standards are met. While the board doesn't run the schools day-to-day, their role is vital in setting the overall vision, policies, and direction of the district, while the&nbsp;superintendent and school administrators manage the daily operations.

What role do you think the board should have moving forward with the bond issue projects?

The school board's core responsibility is to oversee and govern school bond issue&nbsp;projects, ensuring alignment with the district's strategic objectives. This oversight encompasses financial accountability and transparency in project execution. The board stays updated on project budgets to keep them on course and within approved limits.

Additionally, they're entrusted with guaranteeing that bond funds are utilized as intended and managed accordingly. The board requires accountability and transparency from the project management team, with regular updates on project advancement, expenditures,&nbsp; and outcomes. The school board is the custodian of financial and strategic integrity, safeguarding the district's long-term goals and the responsible use of bond proceeds.

Hays USD 489 BOE candidate: David Clingan

The Docking Institute of Public Affairs recently released the annual Kansas Speaks Survey of public opinion. A panel of 485 adult residents of Kansas ages 18 and older were surveyed online to assess their attitudes and opinions regarding various issues of interest to Kansas citizens. 

This year’s survey covered topics including quality of life, the economy, government, politicians, and election integrity, a range of public policy issues, and the state of education in Kansas.

“Kansans’ rating of Kansas economy became slightly better than 2022, with slightly more people feeling Kansas economy was very good or excellent, and slightly fewer feeling Kansas economy was getting worse,” said survey co-author Jian Sun. “However, the ratings were still lower as compared with 2021. With continuing high inflation, more Kansans felt concerned that Kansas’ economy would seriously threaten their welfare or their family’s, and the rating of Kansas as a place to live were the least positive in three years.”

Select findings from the 2023 Kansas Speaks Survey include:

• Of those surveyed, 46.3% of the respondents believed Kansas was on the “right track,” while fewer (30%) felt Kansas was on the “wrong track” this year; this is less positive than the previous two years&nbsp; • Support for Medicaid expansion in Kansas in 2023 continues to be at about 70%&nbsp; • On the issue of Medicaid expansion in Kansas, 49% of the respondents felt the issue was highly or extremely important as they decide who gets their vote to represent them in the Kansas Legislature, compared to 8% who felt the issue was not important at all&nbsp; • Most (80%) respondents felt all education levels (high school, technical/vocational, community colleges, and universities) are important or very important to the overall economic development of Kansas&nbsp; • Housing was also a concern for Kansans, with 71.6% of the respondents saying that they were concerned about the cost of housing

“Housing is an issue not just important to a family’s quality of life but also to a community’s ability to attract and retain a workforce,” said Brett Zollinger, Docking Institute director and survey co-author. “Very similar to 2022, more than 70% of Kansans are concerned about the cost of housing in their communities again this year.”

In a question about affordable housing that was in the survey for the first time this year, strong majorities feel that a lack of affordable housing -- both for purchase and for rent -- is having a negative impact on their community.&nbsp; Almost 70% shared that they would have difficulty finding a home to buy in their price range right now in their community.&nbsp;

Two political scientists from other Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) universities collaborated with Docking Institute staff on this year’s survey, Alexandra Middlewood from Wichita State University and Michael Smith of Emporia State University.

The two policy fellows worked closely with Docking Institute researchers in establishing survey content and on methodological decisions. Smith led on survey content related to election security, diversity in representation of elected officials, perceived effects of climate change, and abortion attitudes/policy questions. Middlewood led in developing content that focused on reasons for gun ownership and political ideology questions.

A panel of 485 adult residents of Kansas ages 18 and older were surveyed online to assess their attitudes and opinions regarding various issues of interest to Kansas citizens. Majority concern about affordable housing noted in FHSU Docking Kansas Speaks survey

A musician and educator who inspired and delighted generations in Hays with his folk music died on Wednesday.

Joe F. Dolezal, 80, of Hays, and his polka band were the featured entertainment at the Hays Oktoberfest for 35 years, including several weeks ago at the 2023 event. He also was a music educator for more than 30 years, 28 of those years in Hays.

Born to Elmer and Marcella (Kalivoda) Dolezal, Joe F. Dolezal was born on Sept. 16, 1943, in Belleville.

After three years at Belleville High School, culminating in his graduation in 1961, Joe went to Fort Hays State University. In 1965, he pursued a major in music education, and in 1970, he attained his master's degree in music education.

According to Hays Memorial Chapel, Joe took on the role of Charley Dalrymple in "Brigadoon." It was during this time that Sue Nelson, his future wife, first encountered Joe's remarkable talent and striking appearance. On Nov. 1, 1963, in Hays, they tied the knot, both having successfully completed their degrees in music education.

Joe dedicated two years to teaching in Plainville, followed by three years in Belleville and 28 years in Hays.

In his later years, Joe's focus centered on the Joe Dolezal Polka Band. He held a deep passion for Czechoslovakian folk music and culture, and he was devoted to playing his German-bought button accordion.

Craig Manteuffel, assistant executive director from KSHAA, was a choral music student who was in three Hays High musicals that Dolezal directed between 1978 and 1980.&nbsp;

“Joe was an extremely gifted musician and educator,” Manteuffel said. “His attention to music detail was second to none, and his rehearsals were led by a true professional.”

Manteuffel worked alongside Dolezal for two years in teaching choir classes at Hays High.

“I was truly blessed to have this amazing man in my life as a teacher, mentor and colleague," he said.&nbsp;

Phil Kuhn, president of Hays Oktoberfest, worked with Dolezal for several years while Dolezal led the entertainment committee. Dolezal was responsible for organizing musical performances, including those featuring his own group, The Joe Dolezal Polka Band

“I know that he inspired a lot of people through his music, not only to listen but also to play different instruments too,” Kuhn said.

Nick Werth, former president of The Volga German Centennial Society, emphasized Dolezal's involvement with the organization, where he served as Oktoberfest's primary musical attraction for 35 years.

“Joe's music was probably some of the best polka that I've heard. Over the years, we've lost many good bands, and [they] have all gotten old on us and passed away, moved on. Joe was one of the last greats, and boy, we're surely going to miss him. We're going to miss him greatly,” Werth said.&nbsp;

Both Werth and Kuhn remember Dolezal's comedic and bright attitude.

“His sense of humor was something else,” Kuhn said. “He knew how to command a room, he really did.”&nbsp;

“Joe was probably one of the happiest guys. [He] always liked to joke around whether he was feeling good or not. He always had a joke, always had a smile and no matter where you’re at, Joe always said hi. He knew everybody,” Werth said.

Cheryl Maxwell Glassman, a former student of Dolezals in his choir class in 1970, recalls him as vigorous and full of spirit.

“I remember the first time I saw him in choir because he was extremely dynamic and vibrant. You could not ever think of sleeping or not paying attention when you were in his class because he was so energetic. You could tell his passion for music was just exuding from him,” Glassman said.

Glassman recently portrayed Catherine the Great as Dolezal took the stage at this year's Oktoberfest.&nbsp;

“It was almost like your kindred music spirits, so to speak, because it was so invigorating to hear him play. To just be on the stage with him at Oktoberfest was always really a cool thing,” she said.

Kathy Dreiling, a former Dolezal student, expressed he had a remarkable impact on her life, guiding her to discover herself and setting her on the right path.

“I went on to do music for a living for a long time, played in different groups and bands, and worked as a writer and a stable singer for studios,” Dreiling said. “It all goes back to Joe. He was an incredible influence, not only for me but for a lot of my classmates."

The Oktoberfest Hays Facebook Page paid tribute to Dolezal in a post.

“First the light went out, and now the music has faded. Our Oktoberfest Family has lost another wonderful soul this week. Yesterday, our dear friend, board member, and Oktoberfest polka-meister, Joe Dolezal, passed away. 

"While we are all in shock and mourning at the loss of our friend, we ask that you join us in praying for his family and friends during their time of grief. Say hello to Janel for us Joe. ... Nothing will ever be the same..”

Janal A. Moore passed away in April, she was vice president of the Volga German Society and historian for the Oktoberfest Committee. She was honored at Oktoberfest in September.

The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Hays First United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials in Joe’s memory may be made to the Hays High Music Department.

Hays community reflects on musician Joe Dolezal's legacy

I am running for school board because as a parent and a community member I wanted to get more involved and help make sure the district continues to grow and head in the right direction.&nbsp;

If I had one thing I could change about the school district it would be to make sure that all people (students and staff) are held accountable for their actions.

I believe the administration is doing the best they can with the situations that are presented to them. &nbsp;

Yes, I believe I can work with the current administration. &nbsp;There will always be disagreements, it is how you handle it and work together that matters.

We need to trust their judgment and support them.
