Smith Center resident celebrates KDOT work anniversary 

LOGAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Friday in Logan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Clayton A.&nbsp;Brommer, 57, Wichita, pulled out onto U.S. 83 at West 8th Street and struck a northbound 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by&nbsp; James W. Woodall, 71, Oakley, in the right rear quarter panel. 

After impact the SUV struck an REA pole, backed up and left the scene.&nbsp;

EMS transported Woodall to the Logan County Hospital.&nbsp;Brommer was not injured. His SUV did not have valid registration and he was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

With the Kansas Shrine Bowl less than a month away, the
final touches of the events surrounding the all-star football game in Hays are
starting to fall into place and that includes the appearance of a Pro Football
Hall of Famer.

The 2023 President of the <a href="https://www.kansasshrinebowl.com/2023-shrine-bowl.html">Kansas Shrine Bowl</a>, Donnie Bohannon
recently spoke with the Hays City Commission about plans for the 50th
annual All-Star Football game July 15 in Hays.

Bohannon said he has been working to build up the Kansas
Shrine Bowl Alumni Association. NFL Hall of Fame running back and Kansas native Barry Sanders will be in Hays, at this year’s game, to be inducted into
the Kansas Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame.

“That's been a goal,” Bohannon said, “and I'm so excited for
the city and the Shrine Bowl.”

Bohannon said a documentary crew has contacted the Shrine
Bowl about coming to Hays as part of the festivities as they film a documentary
on Sanders. 

“They'll be filming the parade. They'll be filming some of
the game (and) they'll be filming his induction ceremony,” Bohannon said. “I
can't say enough how excited I am for the event coming up.”

Sanders, a Wichita North graduate, played for the West team
in the 1986 game. Sanders went on to Oklahoma State where he won the Heisman
Trophy and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1989. After a 10-year NFL career, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Bohannon said they are looking for places around the
community to host Sanders and the film crew.

The events for this year’s Shrine Bowl start Friday, July 14
with the golf tournament. They also will have a community kickoff at 9 a.m. on that
Friday morning and then a 50th Birthday Banquet later in the
afternoon.

Gameday, on Saturday, July 15, kicks off with the parade on
Main Street at 10 a.m. followed by a pep rally at 11 a.m. 

There also will be an alumni reunion Saturday afternoon
followed by a fan fest and then the game at 7 p.m. at Lewis Field Stadium on
the Fort Hays State campus.

The annual all-star game and events surrounding the game
raise money for the Kansas Shriners in support of the Shriners Hospitals for
Children. The charity has given more than $3.7 million to Shriners Hospitals
for Children.

The warm weather is a perfect time for street improvement projects in Hays.

Crews from the public works department have been busy resurfacing some pavement markings.

"Service Division employees used 84 gallons of paint and 750 pounds of glass beads to freshen up pavement markings in various locations across the city," said Collin Bielser, deputy city manager, to the city commission.

Employees also made repairs to the pavement on East 12th Street and at 26th and Schwaller.

The sewer lining project continues. The work is being done by contractor Mayer Specialty Services, Goddard, and is 83 percent complete, according to Bielser. The Department of Water Resources has upgraded a portion of the sewer lines  on Fort Street between 11th and 12th streets.

Holy Family Elementary is pleased to announce Mandy Meagher as their new principal. 

Geoff Andrews, superintendent of Schools for the Salina Diocese, said, “I have enjoyed working with Mandy the last three years at Sacred Heart in Colby, and I am excited to welcome her to the Hays Catholic Schools. She is a servant leader who loves Catholic education and will continue to help Holy Family Elementary thrive.”

 “Mandy not only has many gifts and abilities to serve as principal, but she also seems to have a great love and enthusiasm for our schools,” said Fr. Nick Parker, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and Holy Family Elementary, Hays. “We are happy and excited to have her at Holy Family Elementary.” 

Meagher received both her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her master's degree in education administration from Fort Hays State University.

 She began her career in the classroom in 2005, teaching kindergarten for fifteen years before being named the principal at Sacred Heart Elementary in Colby, Kansas, where she was currently serving before being hired by Holy Family. 

For the last seven years, she has also served St. Nicholas of Myra Parish as the Director of Religious Education. Meagher and her family are parishioners of St. Nicholas of Myra Parish. They have been a part of the HFE Family for the last ten years as their three children attended Holy Family. 

“I am excited to serve the HFE family in this new role. HFE has been a special part of our family, as it has been for so many others in our community," said Meagher.

 "I am excited to work with the extraordinary faculty and staff as together we continue to build on the strong tradition of Catholic Education in our community. I can’t wait to see all our students in August and work with their families as we prepare for the upcoming school year,” she said.

A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.  Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. KDHE: Webster Lake in Rooks County still in algae warning

A Hays nurse practitioner is opening a clinic to help people with foot care.

A year ago, Kansas passed legislation that now allows nurse practitioners to provide health care without having a cooperative agreement with a doctor.

This has opened opportunities for nurse practitioners such as Babe Breit to offer additional services in their communities.

Breit, APRN-BC, MSN-FNP, has extensive experience in health care and wound care. She has been a nurse practitioner since 2001. She is certified by the American Nurses Certification Center.

Her experience includes family practice, radiation oncology, chronic wound care and rheumatology. She currently works with Centurion providing correctional care for the Kansas Department of Corrections for urgent, chronic and acute care for various conditions. This work is separate from her clinic.

Her new clinic&nbsp;<a href="http://breitclinic.com/">Breit Advanced Practice&nbsp;Clinic</a>, will offer a variety of foot care services.

These include nail trimming and removal, thinning of calluses, treatment for fungal nails and treatment of ingrown or infected nails.&nbsp;

In her medical experience, Breit said she has found some people can't properly care for their feet. This can become an issue for the elderly or clients who have mobility issues.

Other clients may not have the dexterity in their hands to deal with nails that are thick or become ingrown or curled.

People who have diabetes or vascular disease can have serious complications from foot issues.

A simple callous, corn, ingrown nail or blister from improperly fitted footwear can lead to wounds, which left untreated, can ultimately lead to a bone infection or an amputation, Breit said in her clinic brochure.

Diabetics can develop peripheral neuropathy and lose feeling in their feet. They may not realize they have an injury to their foot until they have developed a serious infection, she said.

"If you are unable to feel your feet and if you are not capable or able to look at your feet every day once or twice a day, you can wind up with an injury that leads to an infection," she said.&nbsp;

"What I would like to do is try to prevent that from occurring," she said.

Prevention of foot infections through regular foot care is much less expensive and time-consuming, she said.

People whose work requires them to stand all day, especially on hard surfaces, can develop very thick callouses on their feet. She said it can be like having a rock in your shoe all of the time.&nbsp;

Over time people can have tissue damage that can lead to ulceration and an infection.&nbsp;

Thick callouses also can result in fissures and cracks that can be painful.

Breit can thin those callouses with instruments that have been cleaned and chemically sanitized in an autoclave to Centers for Disease Control standards.

"They are quite painful," Breit said of foot callouses. "I just want to make people feel better."&nbsp;

Breit is also licensed to offer other types of general medical care.

Although Hays is served by a podiatrist, Breit said she is offering in-home care.

Breit will not have a brick-and-mortar office. She will provide all of her care at the homes of her clients. She said she also is willing to provide services to clients in nursing care or assisted living.&nbsp; There will be no additional cost for the home visits within Hays. Outside of Hays, standard mileage will apply.

The clinic only accepts private pay for services. Some services may be reimbursed by insurance depending on the carrier, service and condition being treated. Clients must submit the bills to insurance themselves.

The cost is $150 per visit for new patients and $100 per visit for established patients. Ingrown nail treatments cost $225. Nail removals cost $250.

Breit's hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays. You can make an appointment by calling or texting 785-656-6363.

They may not realize they have an injury to their foot until they have developed a serious infection, she said."If you are unable to feel your feet and if you are not capable or able to look at your feet every day once or twice a day, you can wind up with an injury that leads to an infection," she said.&nbsp;"What I would like to do is try to prevent that from occurring," she said.Prevention of foot infections through regular foot care is much less expensive and time-consuming, she said.People whose work requires them to stand all day, especially on hard surfaces, can develop very thick callouses on their feet. She said it can be like having a rock in your shoe all of the time.&nbsp;Over time people can have tissue damage that can lead to ulceration and an infection.&nbsp;Thick callouses also can result in fissures and cracks that can be painful.Breit can thin those callouses with instruments that have been cleaned and chemically sanitized in an autoclave to Centers for Disease Control standards."They are quite painful," Breit said of foot callouses. "I just want to make people feel better."&nbsp;Breit is also licensed to offer other types of general medical care.Although Hays is served by a podiatrist, Breit said she is offering in-home care.Breit will not have a brick-and-mortar office. She will provide all of her care at the homes of her clients. She said she also is willing to provide services to clients in nursing care or assisted living.&nbsp; There will be no additional cost for the home visits within Hays. Outside of Hays, standard mileage will apply.The clinic only accepts private pay for services. Some services may be reimbursed by insurance depending on the carrier, service and condition being treated. Clients must submit the bills to insurance themselves.The cost is $150 per visit for new patients and $100 per visit for established patients. Ingrown nail treatments cost $225. Three people from Hays were honored with mental health awards during the 2023 Kansas Recovery Conference on June 6 in Wichita.

Gina Anderson, the director of High Plains Independence in Hays, was honored with the Su and Dennis Budd Exemplary Life Award.

This award was initiated to honor two special mental health consumers whose leadership and advocacy efforts have shaped the consumer experience in Kansas. The annual award is given to consumers whose energy and spirit stand out and who encourage and inspire others on their recovery journeys.

Anderson also was honored for her six years of service with the Kansas Consumer Advisory Council.&nbsp;

Debra Michels of Hays was honored with the Unity Award. This award recognizes those who have successfully united consumers and non-consumers for the enhancement of their recovery in a cooperative manner. Nominations for this award were accepted from consumer-run organizations, mental health centers, clubhouse programs, individual consumers and mental health treatment providers.

Dr. Mark Romereim, Hays psychiatrist, was awarded the Chamberlain -Rapp Recovery Champion Award. This award is given annually to a mental health provider who has exhibited outstanding leadership skills on behalf of Kansas consumers and the recovery movement in the state.&nbsp;

Hays residents honored with mental health awards

The Hays High Trap Team traveled to Wichita during the weekend to participate in the Kansas State High School Clay Target League Trap Tournament.

Chase Wittman of Hays High was the&nbsp;top varsity female shooter in class 2A​​ and took third place for her season average.

It was an eventful weekend to say the least! The team had a nice afternoon trip down to Wichita followed by some shopping, a big supper, and some fun and games. And just like that, after the team called it a day, the tornado sirens go off at 11:30 Saturday night. The team gathered in the lobby and waited out the storm before trying to get some sleep before their big day.

Sunday morning was all business for the team. They shot some practice rounds and were ready to get things going. HHS' six squads started shooting for scores at 9:30 a.m. It was cool and breezy at first, something the HHS squads are used to dealing with. The squads might have been a little sluggish out of the starting blocks but for the most part, the team seemed to improve as the day went on.

The great news came at the end of the day during the awards ceremony. That’s when the squads found out they had a state champion amongst them. 

Below is a list of students who ended the day on the leaderboards. The number in parentheses is where they placed. The number behind the name is their score followed by the reverse run, which is used to break a tie.

Hays High trap shooter brings home state championship

Battle of the Businesses 2023 went from June 5th to June 16th to fill the food pantry at First Call for Help,607 E. 13th, Hays.

Each business oversaw promoting themselves any way they chose. They could post on social medias, do radio advertisements, and some even did promotional deals.

The top overall contributor was Simply Charmed of downtown Hays, owned by Sarah Cearley-Windholz.&nbsp; Simply Charmed received and donated 444 non-expired/non-perishable goods. Goods were anything from canned veggies and meats to cereal or condiments. The items differed vastly which is great for our food pantry. Our pantry was VERY empty and now it’s full for the first time in years!

St. Joseph’s Church has a food pantry, in the building that was previously Kennedy Middle School,  that supplies us with food boxes each month. When a family or individual comes in and needs a food box, we grab one and then we add many items from our pantry to help and fill the box in its entirety. It is a great system that we use, and we are thankful to be able to help so many out with food each month.

 Second place contributor was Hays Recreation Commission. The employee that headed it there was Haley Nixon. The Hays Rec donated 390 items. 

Third place contributor was Early Childhood Connections. The employee that was in charge of their participation there was Michelle Dannels. Early Childhood Connections donated 236 items. 

Other businesses that participated were: Cottonwood Extension District office of K-State Research and Extension, Eagle Communications, Gone Logo Screen Printing &amp; Embroidery, Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau, Hess Services, Nex-Tech Wireless, Styles Dance Centre, and The ARC of Central Plains. 

We are SO grateful for all the businesses that participated, and we hope to have even more involvement next year!

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Ford F150 driven by Kasey J, Danaher, 16, Jetmore, was eastbound on an unnamed county road five and one half miles south of Jetmore.

The pickup left the roadway, entered the north ditch, slid sideways and rolled and came to rest in a field on its top.

EMS transported Danaher to the Hodgeman County Health Center where she was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The driver lost consciousness. The car struck the guard rail and came to rest in the south ditch. EMS transported Oneal to Citizen's Medical Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

HAYS – The Ellis County Commission began the process of trimming
the number of townships within the county at its meeting this week.

On Tuesday, in a 2-0 vote, Commissioner Michael Berges was absent,
the commission approved five resolutions that disorganize five townships and
attach them to four other townships. The resolutions move to cut the number of
townships from nine to four.

Ellis County Clerk and Election Officer Bobbi Dreiling said
she has been working on this process since she took office in 2021. She said there
had been townships that had asked for disorganization in the last couple of years.

“People did not want to run for the offices when they were
on the ballot,” Dreiling said. “When people would have write-in names, we would
call them and they usually turned the position down.”

Dreiling said all of the township boards approved the moves
presented and approved by the commission.

The resolutions disorganize Catherine and Ellis townships
and attach them to Buckeye Township. The resolutions also disorganized Lookout Township and attached it
to Big Creek Township. Victoria Township was disorganized and attached to Herzog
Township and they disorganized Wheat Township and attached it to Freedom Township.

Dreiling said because the townships no longer take care of
the roads, the Public Works Department does, most of the townships were
collecting taxes to go through the processes required by state statute to
produce a budget even though they did not have any governmental functions.

“A lot of the township were just levying for money, to pay
their board members, to do their publication of their budget and the preparation
of their budget and to pay for the treasurer bond,” Dreiling said. “For quite a
few years a lot of them haven’t even been levying anything because they have
money in their coffers that they are trying to spend down.”

Dreiling said any money left over for the townships that are
being disorganized would go to the township there are being attached to.

Now that the resolutions have been approved, the clerk will
have a public hearing at 8:30 a.m. on July 18. Any resident of the
township can ask questions at that time.

If there are residents who want to challenge the resolutions,
they can file a petition. However, the petition must have a majority of township residents' signatures and be filed with the county clerk’s office within 30 days of the
final publication of the notice to disorganize in the local newspaper.

If the petition is certified by the clerk's office then the measure would to a ballot question for townships residents.

Ellis County Commission votes to cut number of townships

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Phillips County Rural Water District 1 public water supply system in Phillips County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on June 22 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

KDHETOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Phillips County Rural Water District 1 public water supply system in Phillips County.Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:<ul>
 <li>Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.</li><li>Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.</li><li>If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.</li><li>Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.</li><li>Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.</li>
 </ul>The advisory took effect on June 22 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure. Boil water advisory issued for Phillips County Rural Water District 1

This year's annual <a href="https://wildwestfestival.com/">Wild West Festival</a>, which will be June 29 through July 4, is again filled with star-studded performances.

Headliners include country acts Chris Janson on Thursday and Jackson Dean on Friday. Ashley Cooke will open for Janson and Shane Profitt will open for Dean. Saturday is the festival's traditional rock night with AC/DC tribute band Hells Bells opening for Arch Allies.

Ticket prices have increased this year. VIP tickets will be $200. Advance general admission tickets for all three nights are $30 and single-night general admission tickets at the gate are $35. Fireworks will be on Tuesday night, July 4.

Thursday, June 29 7:30 to 9 p.m. Big Loud / Back Blocks Music artist Ashley Cooke is an emerging country artist with&nbsp;chart-climbing hits like “Never Til Now."&nbsp;

The festival website described her lyrics as skillfully crafted and her&nbsp;performances as unforgettable, adding she has an effortless vocal beauty and a bold sense of internal grit, freely mixing it up with the boys while she rallies the girls. 

"Hailing from Parkland, Fla., and moved by emotional hit makers like Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts and Kelly Clarkson, Cooke embraces the energy of pop and depth of country, writing her first song by age 11," the festival website said.

Cooke moved to Nashville at 18 and attended Belmont University, but she did not study music. After entering the school's Country Showcase on a whim and winning, Cooke decided to pursue music for a year.

When the pandemic had other plans, Cooke went to TikTok where she built a fanbase.

Chris Janson has had five singles on the Billboard Hot 100.&nbsp;His big hits include “Buy Me A Boat," “Fix A Drink," "Drunk Girl," which was an ACM Award-winner, “Good Vibes” and “Done." At the end of 2021, Shane Profitt of Columbia, Tenn., was still pulling overtime at his job with the city, busting his back about an hour south of Nashville and living for the weekend, according to the festival website.

But now the 22-year-old is rocking sold-out crowds, touring with his chart-topping hero and writing modern country tunes so genuine, they slip on like a pair of broken-in work boots, the festival website said.

“Back in November I was still working for the city of Columbia, getting up at 6 o’clock every morning and working eight hours a day – and I hated every minute of it,” the festival website quoted Profitt. “When people hear the name Shane Profitt, I want them to automatically know I’m no different than them, because I actually lived that 40-hour-week life. And it wasn’t that long ago.”

Profitt has signed with BMLG Records/Harpeth 60 Records. He has a three-song collection, Maury County Line, which&nbsp; includes “Better Off Fishin',” “Guys Like Me” and&nbsp;“How It Oughta Be."&nbsp;

The Maryland native’s single, “Don’t Come Lookin’” was the fastest debut to reach No. 1 in 2022 and cemented Jackson as the youngest solo male country artist to reach the top of the charts with a debut, the festival website said.

Jackson has joined bills with acts including Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Brantley Gilbert, Kane Brown, Jake Owen, Brooks &amp; Dunn, Lee Brice and Brothers Osborne.

He has landed spots on the&nbsp;Billboard Hot 100,&nbsp;the soundtrack for Netflix’s "The Ice Road" and&nbsp;a John Dutton scene in "Yellowstone," a song that had 80 million streams. He has been nominated for the ACM New Male Artist of the Year.

Mature beyond his years, Jackson opted to move out to a cinderblock, concrete floor, one-room shack on the back of his grandfather’s property with no heat and no plumbing at just 18 years old, the festival website said.
